Orihuela’s tallest building evacuated A TOTAL of eight people, including a three-year-old girl, needed to be evacuated from a 10storey building in Orihuela after a fire broke out in an electric box.

The blaze in one of the tallest buildings in Orihuela caused a number of minor explosions which caused alarm throughout the block and resulted in smoke spreading through the stairwell.

Nobody was injured during the incident, but a number of residents were treated by paramedics for the effects of smoke and suffering from shock.

Blood pressure drug recall I

T’S estimated that there are around 19,000 patients across the Alicante Province currently taking one of the 100 blood-pressure related drugs that are being withdrawn from the market.

The announcement of the rogue batch of medication was made last week after it was discovered that they contain an impurity that may be cancer causing.

It essentially affects those tablets that contain Valsartan, and since the warning, health centres and doctors have seen a steady trickle of patients going to double check on the medication they take. The official advice is for patients not to stop taking their prescription, but to consult their GP who will change the brand.

A week is a long time in politics by John Smith

IT has not been a great week for Britain, or England for that matter.

Just when it seemed that the Brexit deal was going to go through with a whimper rather than a bang, it all went wrong for Mrs May. She must have been breathing a sigh of relief after last Friday’s cabinet meeting where she presented her vision for a ‘third way.’ It seemed that her proposals had been accepted and there was unlikely to be a vote of no confidence in her.

Then the house of cards started to collapse as Brexit Minister David Davis resigned followed by one of his juniors and then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called it quits with both explaining that they had no faith in the proposals.

A couple more junior ministers left and the former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt took over foreign affairs from Boris who is now free to snipe from outside the tent rather than have to uncharacteristically

WARM WELCOME?: Hoping for another friendly meeting. bite his tongue.

With the top four politicians in the Cabinet having voted to Bremain, and with Michael Gove currently professing his support for the proposal (which had not been published at the time of writing), it looks as if the opportunity for a soft Brexit is attainable but one still has to accept the agreement could be hard or even non-ex-

istent. As usual, the politicians are being politicians with the government suggesting that it’s time for the European Union to be serious and get moving on the ‘divorce,’ whilst unsurprisingly the EU representatives are saying the same about Britain.

Just over eight months to go and there is very little agreed but at least the government was able to let the euphoria of

England’s triumphs in the World Cup divert some of the attention from the real situation of lack of progress.

With even many hardened Scots deciding that England was representing the United Kingdom, it was somewhat unfortunate that the entire caravan came off the rails when they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Croatia.

A third place match with Belgium on Saturday is hardly likely to create too much excitement but there was one more event likely to add to the prime minister’s week.

Any visit by a president of the USA has in the past seen some negative reaction, going back to the days of the Vietnam War, but it does seem likely that President Trump is going to receive a far from warm welcome from the general public.

At the end of the day, love him or loathe him, he was elected in accordance with the US Constitution and although he does have an important role to play in world politics, it is arguably not for the British to try to dictate what his policies should be.

Hopefully, the visit will pass with little violence, although there will be a lot of noise, and it rather seems that President Trump won’t respond negatively to the criticism until he leaves the UK and then will resort to tweeting his opinion about Britain and his visit.

ABANDONED: Summer visitors often leave their pets behind.

Animal welfare campaign launched

T

HE Murcia regional government and the College of Veterinarians has launched the latest campaign to raise awareness of the genera l h e a l th o f d o mestic animals.

They are particularly emphasising the importance of having rabies vaccinations and also to prevent people abandoning their pets. The latter is an annual consequence of people making

their summer trips to coastal areas from their permanent homes inland, and then deliberately leaving their animals behind.

The campaign also seeks to inform people of the importance of diagnosing and knowing about pet illnesses and diseases which can be transmitted to humans.

T h i s y e a r ’s i n i t i a t i v e was launched by the Director General of Public Health, Jose Carlos Vi-

cente, and the Director of Agriculture, Francisco Gonzalez, who also seek to advise on the overall care of pets and the recommended safe levels of food they should consume during the summer.

The Murcia Region has its own pet ID system (SIAMU) and the database, connected with the rest of Spain, has around 200,000 animals registered, of which around 90 per cent are dogs.

Boat access to be delayed ACCESS ramps for boats that were planned to be installed for this summer in the Mar Menor will be delayed until the end of the season.

Contracts are already in place to commence the work on four beaches in San Javier and Cartagena, but will now not get underway so as not to disturb bathers in the areas.

The budget for the works is around €124,000 and has been financed jointly between the Murcia Region and the European Union. The aim is to reduce and control the entry and entry points of small boats to the Mar Menor with the creation of extra access areas.

These are on the beaches located in Los Urrutias, Islas Minores, Playa Honda and Atalayon, and will make it easier for boat owners to get in and out of the lagoon as well as store their boats nearby if needed.

Coalition deal under discussion THE ongoing political shenanigans that have seemed to dominate Orihuela continue in abundance with the announcement of new plans to oust the current mayor, Emilio Bascuñana.

The socialists (PSOE) have presented a motion of censure in the hope of removing Bascuñana due to ongoing allegations that he was paid for a job he had with the Valencian Health Service which he didn’t attend for four years.

To achieve their aim, the PSOE need the support of the three Ciudadanos (C’s) who currently give Bascuñana’s Partido Popular (PP) their majority.

However, the spokesperson for the C’s, Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas, said that his party wouldn’t simply give their votes to the PSOE and thus automatically give them the mayoralty. Instead, he offered a coalition led by the C’s until the next elections due in May 2019,

stating that ‘they are a party of the centre of politics and so closer to the beliefs of most of the voters.’

IT almost never happened, but the beach especially designated by Torrevieja City Council for the sole use of dogs has now ‘opened for business.’

The original idea was to have the beach open and ready by last weekend, but the official decree authorising it hadn’t been officially published.

Even so, preparations were made by members of the council that included special ‘doggy-doo’ bins and signposts being erected to indicate the stretches of beach along Punta Margalla, and Cala de Moro o Mal Paso.

However, as Councillor Javier Manzanares explained in the Spanish media, the notice boards had been vandalised and were seen floating in the sea. The culprits of such actions were labelled as “shameful” by him. They have since been replaced.

Naturally, dog owners have welcomed the decision to have a beach for their faithful friends. However, a

group of residents in Punta Margalla has organised a petition to protest against the concession.

They’ve reached 50 so far and they allege they weren’t consulted about the plans and only learned of the decision once they arrived at the holiday homes.

On El Moro o Mal Paso, the dog beaches are only provisional until a formal decision is taken next year after the May 2019 local elections.

AYOR of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, has held the latest in a series of meetings with British residents.

Locals from Cala Dorada, Mar Azul, Rocío de Mar, Rocajuna, Las Barcas, Sector I, Mariblanca, La Veleta and Los Altos attended the gettogether that lasted for around an hour-and-a-half.

During the course of the meeting, Mayor Dolon was asked to deal with several areas of concern that mainly related to the local infrastructure. They included green areas, the roads, street lighting and road signs.

Mayor Dolon later explained about passing the 2018 budget, and that it was the first from this council as it had to keep to the 2015 bud-

get that was totally insufficient to manage municipal services efficiently.

He was accompanied at the meeting by Carlos Gonzalez, the director of the Office for Attention to International Residents (OARI), and did his best to answer every question. He also made notes on the points raised to forward on to the appropriate departments for action.

Cartagena offers beach advice DON’T swim at night; don’t drink alcohol on the beach and keep watch on your children. They are three of the recommendations featured in a brochure with the object of ensuring visitors to Cartagena’s beaches have a safe and enjoyable time.

According to a report in the Spanish media, some 4,000 brochures have been produced as part of the major information and prevention initiative.

As well as covering the traditional, but always important advice when on the beach, the brochure highlights the dangers of the Portuguese Man-o-War jellyfish that have blighted some of the coast this year.

He’ll never forget again A MERCEDES car ended up semi-submerged in the sea off La Manga after it rolled in after the handbrake hadn’t been engaged.

The incident happened when the driver was trying to load a jet ski on to the car’s trailer off the Puerto Bello de La Manga in San Javier, and it was then too late to pull up the handbrake.

Learning to stroll, Spanish-style

ASK anyone who visits a Spanish resort what exasperates them most, and they will invariably reply that it’s the maddeningly slow pace at which Spanish people - particularly the elderly - stroll.

It’s not just that they walk slowly, they have a tendency to move erratically. They lurch unexpectedly from side to side, or stop dead in their tracks to stare at something utterly mundane in shop windows.

Frying pans, for some reason, hold a particular fascination for them.

A very tall Dutch friend, Ricardo, who has lived in Benidorm for years, once told me he’s often tempted to simply step over anyone who gets in his way. He’s never adapted to the slow pace of life here, and moves like a tornado through a field of maize.

My husband Marcus, who is pretty tall too, also complains long and hard about his inability to stride though clumps of diminutive oldies.

And another expat asked why the heck so many Spanish folk insist on taking dogs the size of rats for walks in crowded areas. Their very

After I settled in Benidorm almost eight years ago, I made a determined effort to fit in with the strolling masses. It wasn’t easy because all my adult life I’d moved at the breakneck speed expected of one in large cities. But in the end I got the hang of moving at a snail’s pace, especially in very hot weather.

Well, sweltering conditions were

the order of the day last Saturday in London, where I had to attend a business meeting. Yet people, sweating like criminals in a confessional, were huffing and puffing their way at breakneck speed to their respective destinations, and heaven help anyone who got in their way.

Not only had I forgotten how to move fast, I was handicapped by a suitcase - and a painful attack of gout. Each time I paused for breath I was simply shoved out of the way by jet-propelled pedestrians.

Many of these were feather-bedecked drag queens in six-inch stiletto heels, all rushing to join the 2018 London Gay Pride event, which attracted around 300,000 people.

Then there were the thousands who jubilantly poured out of pubs after England’s 2-0 World Cup win against Sweden, and at this point I seriously began to think I’d be trampled to death.

That’s when panic set in, and all I wanted to do was get myself to Vic-

toria station and head to Brighton, where I was staying with a friend for the weekend. Dragging my luggage, I had to totter about a mile in searing heat to find a road that hadn’t been closed off for Pride and get a bus or taxi. Overcrowded tube stations were simply not an option.

When I spot a police car parked in Covent Garden, I ask a kebabmunching copper if he knows the quickest way to Victoria. “I haven’t got a clue, mate,” he replies. And he then asks: “Where is Victoria?”

Just then I see a cab and hail it.

“Victoria,” I pant. “You’re having a laugh,” the cabby says, “there’s no way of getting there, what with all the main routes being closed.”

So we head instead to Farringdon station and an hour or so later I stagger out into the football-frenzied streets of Brighton, feeling as if I’m caught up in a herd of marauding bison. Even Brighton’s numerous street buskers cannot make themselves heard above the howls of ‘It’s Coming Home.’

I wake up on Sunday feeling like I’ve been in a train wreck. Every muscle aches, and I vow that, should I hear anyone complaining about the slow pace of life in Spain, I’ll slap them repeatedly across the chops with a very large chorizo sausage.

THE famous palm tree in Orihuela known as ‘La Carmen’ has collapsed.

The iconic tree which at a height of 24 metres and said to be 180 years old was both Orihuela’s tallest and oldest - collapsed last Tuesday morning just days after the city council had been asked by the Association for Living Palms to act to prevent the fall.

The palm was a wellknown sight for visitors to Orihuela having featured on postcards and being emblematic of the Hernandian district close to the Santo Domingo Church and the Miguel Hernandez museum.

Only a few days ago, the Orihuela Association for Living Palms had made a public denunciation of the state of the tree which was already showing signs of collapsing.

The weight of the palm fronds, which had not been pruned, were causing the trunk to bend and they request-

After the collapse they took to social media to express their outrage, stating, ‘We thank the councilors and the city of Orihuela, for letting a monumental palm tree die, thanks to the carelessness and neglect of their management.’

Their spokesman, Jose Manuel Lorente,

said that he is considering a formal denuncia against the council for failing to act to save a tree protected under legislation.

This is part of an ongoing general dissatisfaction with the way the council protects the palms - a sentiment shared by many of the cities inhabitants.

Extra glass recycling bins promised

by Ray Chadwick ROUND 300 Torrevieja-based businesses, especially those involved in the tourism industry, have agreed to be part of the city council’s initiatives on glass recycling.

The measures, announced by Councillor Fanny Serrano under the campaign of ‘Take note recycle glass,’ will be managed by the nonprofit organisation Ecovidrio who are specialists in this area.

They will now be making more than 1,000 visits to venues such as hotels, restaurants and bars to make them more aware of the benefits of recycling and to work out

where new containers could be installed to encourage better recycling habits.

According to the Spanish media, Councillor Serrano said that she has ‘complained bitterly’ about the lack of recycling bins for plastic within the municipality.

“I have the promise that 500 containers will arrive shortly from Ecoembes, but whilst we wait it’s difficult for Torrevieja to increase its recycling figures.”

She acknowledged that there is an existing imbalance between the numbers of containers for glass (699) and those for the collection of plastic (159), and that is something which it is hoped will be rectified soon.

Short news Hefty fines for pet poisoners THE council of Pilar de la Horadada has taken the issue of poisoned animals very seriously and has introduced fines of up to €30,000.

There have been several cases recently in the municipality with a number of dogs and cats being found dead due to poisoning.

Drunk driver insists on red light THE woman who knocked down two elderly people as they crossed a La Manga road was tested positive for alcohol at the scene.

Both were taken to the Santa Lucia Hospital. A 74-year-old woman suffered a broken leg and a man had a deep cut to his face.

The driver of the car insists she couldn’t avoid them as they walked across the zebra crossing when the red light was still flashing.

HAUL: 100,000 items found hidden in Alicante.

Chinese link to fake goods find

COLLABORATION between the Guardia Civil and the Spanish Tax Agency has dealt a serious blow to the distribution of counterfeit goods in the port of Alicante.

A grand total of 102,600 items were seized in the operation which has been estimated to be worth more than â‚Ź13 million on the street.

According to reports in Spanish media, the recipient of the alleged fake merchandise discovered in the container was a 48-year-old Chinese man who has since been arrested in Pinto, near to Madrid.

The container arrived in Alicante from China and was originally inspected at the end of April. Costume jewellery, scarves and handbags comprised the bulk of the consignment that corresponded with what was listed on the inventory; however they were purely there to hide the counterfeit products.

During May and June, samples of the goods were sent to the official distributors of the brands and it was following confirmation from them on the lack of authenticity that the investigation proceeded to identify those behind the crimes.

Helping hand killed A GOOD SAMARITAN has been killed after getting trapped under the lorry he’d stopped to help on the A-70 motorway in Elche.

The 35-year-old man came to the aid of a lorry driver who had pulled over on the hard shoulder after suffering a puncture. Without warning, the truck collapsed during the repair and trapped the man under it. Paramedics called to the scene were unable to revive him; the driver of the lorry also suffered from a blow to the head.

OCAL POLICE operating in Cartagena have confiscated a significant number of allegedly fake goods.

Around 223 products, made up of mainly clothes and slippers, were discovered hidden among fishing gear in a storeroom located in Cabo de Palos.

The seizure of the items comes after the Guardia Civil intercepted a vehicle believed to have been used to transport the supplies between sellers in the days leading up to the find.

This led them to suspect that the warehouse in the port was being used to store the counterfeit goods.

ORIHUELA’S Councillor for Beaches, Luisa Bone, has launched the ‘Manual of Good Practices on the Beach,’ the objective of which is to teach and educate the municipality’s children on how to behave during their visits to the beach.

Brochures in Spanish and English have been distributed throughout schools, and include sections on recycling, animal protection and, most importantly after a number of incidents this year, how to deal with jellyfish.

Thanks to collaboration with members of the Cabo de Palos fishermen’s association, it was possible to find the owner of the storeroom.

He was well-known to his colleagues and voluntarily allowed access inside, and it was at this point they found the

packages hidden under fishing nets.

The owner of the warehouse, according to a report in the Spanish media, apparently had no knowledge that these products were inside and it is alleged that someone else working there may have h a d a c c e s s t o a key.

Hiring a smarter driver

The aim is to improve the image of the service, and so it’s the end of drivers wearing shorts and flip-flops.

However, these are not voluntary requirements and will be subject to a by-law passed by the Elche City Council.

Protests against pedestrian plans IT’S almost a year since the municipality of Santa Pola took the decision to close off some of the town centre streets to traffic and to make some of them oneway.

H o w e v e r, according to a report in the Spanish media, the local merchants association insists that businesses have lost up to 30 per cent of their sales because of the changes.

The unrest among the traders and business owners at the council’s plans to extend their pedestrianisation of the centre has reached such a point that they will be demonstrating on Friday, July 20 ... for the third time.

The new traffic measures meant that large numbers of potential customers were diverted away from the town centre and found places to park in other areas.

Consequently, as the shops allegedly lost trade, the car park benefitted from an extra 40 per cent occupancy with an average of 500 cars per day expected in the summer months.

What frustrates the shopkeepers is that in 2016 they had seen signs that their sales had begun to rebound after the economic crisis.

Since the traffic changes, they have lost between 8 and 30 per cent and several businesses have closed.

Disco decibel levels rectified

The Velice was closed last Wednesday on the instructions of the council, but was reopened at the start of this week after proving that the sound limiters are fully operational.

According to a report in the Spanish press, the disco had been breaking noise pollution levels since April on the outside-facing terrace.

This has now been rectified with a formal certificate being issued stating that the music equipment fully complies with the legisla-

tion. In future, music cannot exceed 74 decibels.

There have been allegations that the limiter had been tampered with which would explain why the report revealed that 92 decibels had been reached between the hours of midnight and 8am during one night in April.

Local Police have now formally sealed the limiter which ensures the equipment cannot

be manipulated at a later date. If the disco hadn’t complied with the new regulations they would not be able to use the outside terrace.

One of the many complaints about the noise level emanating from the Velice came from a resident in Aguas Nuevas who lives more than one kilometre away, and it was this that hastened the actions of the local authority.

Santa Pola sees changing times VISITORS to a couple of beaches in Santa Pola will notice a new look set of changing rooms and public toilets on the P l a y a Va r a d e r o a n d Playa Levante.

The old buildings have undergone a complete refurbishment and they are now fully accessible for everyone.

The insides have been renovated to allow for separate ladies and gent l e m e n ’s t o i l e t s a n d three changing rooms.

One of the rooms now includes welcome hot and cold shower facilities.

The lifeguards’ post on the Playa Levante has also been upgraded, and now includes a special area to attend members of the public, a private r e s t r o o m f o r t h e s t a ff , and a storeroom to house the rescue boat and other equipment.

As soon as the budgets have been approved at a future council meeting, similar

facilities on Playa Lisa, Playa Tamarit and Calas del Este will also be given a makeover.

SALES of mobility scooters and other types of electric vehicles have exploded across the Alicante Province, but there are no laws in place to regulate their use.

People use them for work, to move around town or just for fun and it’s the latter where sales of electric skateboards has skyrocketed in recent months, especially in some of the large cities such as Alicante.

However, faced with this almost unstoppable increase, the Spanish traffic authority (DGT) issued a series of recommendations on the rules that should govern

them. These weren’t mandatory, but suggested that it should be down to the individual municipalities to regulate their use. But throughout the province, it’s only Elda that has passed any local by-laws.

The concern is highlighted from a legal perspective, and the fact many of these electric vehicles share pavements and other public spaces with pedestrians, with some of them capable of reaching speeds of 30 kph. The risks from possible accidents are obvious.

It should also be borne in mind that these vehicles don’t need any insurance or permission to drive them.

Whales meet again A NUMBER of fin whales have been spotted off the Cabo de Palos in Murcia.

The fin whale - also known as the finback whale or common rorqual are believed to have passed by the coast on their way back south having also been seen in Alicante earlier in the week.

This species is the second largest whale after the blue whale and there are a number known to patrol the Mediterranean. At this time of the year, they are known to head toward the Straits of Gibraltar.

Sexist attack crackdown ORIHUELA’S Department of Equality has launched a campaign against sexist attacks and has encouraged more people to call the 112 emergency number if they experience or witness such incidents.

The announcement was made ahead of this year’s Moors and Christians festivities. It’s at such large gatherings that there’s a likelihood of an assault taking place, based on previous experiences.

A meeting was held between the council and security authorities at the start of the month to come up with a protocol for dealing with any incidents.

Action against illegal traders URING a single day patrolling the promenade in Torrevieja, which is popular with the local street sellers using a carpet for their ‘pitch,’ more than 1,000 counterfeit products were seized.

The dedicated GRO section of the Local Police began their operation last Sunday which concentrated on the areas used by illegal traders who

simply set up on the pavements without any form of licence to do so. The patrols were stepped up after the amount of fake goods discovered had increased in the area, with many being traced to one particular zone.

According to a report in the Spanish media, within hours of beginning their operation two people were arrested, suspected of being the alleged

ringleaders of those that are peddling the counterfeit goods.

The amount seized on the first day was estimated to have a street value of €10,000.

It is understood that there are more than 80 unlicensed sellers operating and the Local Police will continue with the monitoring throughout the rest of the summer in the tourist hotspots.

Dental scam takes away the smile P to 2,000 people living in the Murcia region may be affected by a dental scam.

According to a report in the Spanish media, around 300 patients have already gone to the Guardia Civil.

The company involved closed its clinic in Murcia last month and has left patients with unfinished courses of treatment of which the majority were paid for up front to cover the cost.

President of the National Association of those Affected by iDental (ADAFI), Javier Camacho, said this week that the “clinics were able to take advantage of legal loopholes.” It is also alleged that the clinics used a significant amount of poorly sterilised equipment.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Health has requested the courts be given the records and are awaiting their response.

Taking into account that iDental advertised itself as a ‘low-cost’ organisation to make dental treatment affordable; many of the patients are those that are least able to take a financial knock of this kind.

Beach thief A MAN has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Santa Pola after a series of robberies from parked cars on both the El Pinet and La Marina beaches.

He was nearly caught in the act after being spotted by plain-clothed officers, but he managed to flee in his car.

However, a few days later he was again spotted stealing from cars and was immediately arrested.

Fast car to prison?

ALICANTE’S provincial court in Elche has confirmed a twoyear sentence on an organiser of a number of illegal car races across Spain.

The events date back to 2012 and some of the incidents which took place in Elche included highspeed racing, spins, zig-zag driving and deliberately driving on the opposite side of the road as a dare, in cars such as BMWs and Aston Martins.

It has still to be decided if the defendant, Javier Martinez, will have to enter prison.

Action on water

A TOTAL of 27 municipalities across the Vega Baja region have been subject to restrictions on the amount of fertilisers containing nitrates that can be used.

The controls have been brought in to protect potential contamination of the water tables and will depend on the individual farming areas and the types of crop being grown.

Hidden dangers to pier daredevils POLICE in Torrevieja have increased their concerns about the number of people - particularly youngsters - jumping into the sea from the pier located on the western side of the port.

They continue to warn that the habit is very dangerous, essentially due to the ongoing work of the desalination plant close by as well as the salt conveyor belt. In addition, hundreds of small motor boats and

sailing vessels pass by on a daily basis.

Notwithstanding the dangers of jumping from such a height, the area also includes one unknown and hidden hazard too many, which is a powerful under-

water pump used by the Torrevieja desalination plant.

This area is signposted by warning buoys, but they are often ignored by bathers. They also take more than a risk with the

close proximity of jet skis that drive past the pier used for jumping.

Police will be making extra patrols on a regular basis, and they will severely reprimand anyone caught jumping from the pier.

Drowning scare A RAPID drop in blood pressure is believed to have caused a woman to get into difficulties as she swam off La Marina beach. The 61-year-old was found unconscious after it’s understood she swallowed an amount of water.

Local Police from Elche helped in the initial rescue and resuscitation before the woman was stabilised and taken to Torrevieja Hospital.

90th anniversary of San Juan CELEBRATING the anniversary, the Alicante Council has unveiled a special display consisting of more than 200 exhibits, which opened at the Lonja del Pescado de Alicante last Tuesday.

Posters, models, banners, and some examples of clothing, are the elements that make up this great exhibition and many of them have been unseen in recent years and are now available thanks to the council and individuals

who have emptied their own collections.

Visitors who come to the Lonja, will find a large number of historical items which tell the story of the last 90 years of the bonfires of San Juan, including the important role of women in the celebrations over the years.

University offers a safe way ahead WITH the principal objective of improving the lives of people with visual disabilities and with the help of modern technology, a major invention has been unveiled.

Announced by a business based in the Miguel Hernandez University Scientific Park (UMH) in Elche, they have produced a cane that advises blind users of the presence - and the dangers - of obstacles. These include tree branches and shop awnings that would normally be ducked under by sighted persons.

The cane, known as ‘Egara,’ works by connecting it to a wristband that gives out a warning, through vibrations, if there are potential problems coming up as the user makes their way along.

In order to raise the money to launch the first run of this product onto the market, a crowd-funding campaign has been started and was due to close yesterday (Thursday).

The stick also includes a USB connection port to enable its battery to be recharged in the usual way.

The aim is to launch the canes fully by the end of 2018 and a handful of the prototypes have already been given to blind people across a number of Spanish cities to try.

The response they have received has been “very positive,” according to the UMH and approved by the Spanish National Blind Charity (ONCE).

Girl freed from Domesday guru OLICE in Peru arrested Felix Steven Manrique, a guru responsible for enticing Patricia Aguilar from her Elche home.

She met Manrique, the head of a gnostic Domesday sect, via the internet and fled to Lima (Peru) in January 2017 once she was 18.

Since then her father, Alberto Aguilar, and her mother, Rosa Poveda, first sought to locate her and then persuade her to return home.

After Alberto travelled to Lima last June, the Peru-

He was traced to San Martin de Pangoa jungle, almost 500 kilometres from the place where Patricia was last seen.

Thanks to Patricia’s parents, the Ertzaintza - the Basque region’s police force - were able to prevent a 16-year-old in Guipuzccoa from falling into Manrique’s clutches last October.

New faces for Guardia Civil MURCIA is among the 16 Guardia Civil areas that have seen close to a country-wide total of almost 30,000 people apply for jobs in the service.

Of those that are looking to don the famous green uniform, 21 per cent of the applicants are women and the average age is between 27 and 30. If they pass a series of physical tests, a medical and an interview, they will begin their training at the Duque de Ahumada College in Madrid.

Surfers ask for their own zone RIHUELA Council has introduced a local by-law that now prevents lovers of surfing from practising their chosen sport along the coastline under their responsibility.

Those caught breaking the law could potentially be subject to a fine.

This imposition has been denounced by surfers who have already put a petition in motion to ask for them to be allowed to continue with their water-based fun.

Spain has witnessed an increase in the popularity of surfing in recent times, but there is nowhere off the coast of Orihuela where it can take place.

The City Council argues that there isn’t enough space from the beaches that can be reserved exclusively for surfers and, at the same time, doesn’t present a danger to bathers.

Luis Tomas, who belongs to La Zenia Surf, told the Spanish media that they are seeking a meeting with the Orihuela Council to discuss their plight. “We don’t want to be in the same area as swimmers because we’re fully aware that the swell can affect our movements and pose a danger,” he said.

they can use and one notsuitable for swimming. The area of Cala Cerrada has been suggested as a possible location, and it was there a large number of surfers gathered at the weekend to collect signatures.

Noise limits for August fiestas ARTYGOERS in Elche will be delighted to learn that the City Council has given their blessing to increase the number of days available for this year’s fiestas. But there are conditions...

The concession to install extra bars and entertainment in Elche’s streets has been increased from three to four, but it comes with the understanding that noise levels must be monitored and controlled.

Locals and visitors alike will be able to take part in the nightlife over the weekend of August 11 and 12, in addition to the two traditionally busier days of August 13 and 14 which include the iconic Nit de l’Alba firework spectacular.

In addition, the council has encouraged venues to share their entertainment and therefore avoid the situation of varying styles of music competing with each other.

On August 11 and 12, the music must cease at 4.30am... at 6am on August 13 and 14.

Traffic jams continue for the summer WENTY black spots across the Alicante Province will still be causing drivers problems throughout the rest of the summer.

In particular, it’s the A70 and N-332 as they pass through Torrevieja, Altea, and the stretch between Santa Pola and El Altet which have been identified as the four main points where the traffic hold-ups will be at their worst.

There are 2,621 kilometres of various levels of roads within the Costa Blanca and, along with the hotels and apartments that line them, s u ff e r f r o m t h e i r o w n saturation and forms of ‘overbooking’ during the months of July and August.

When news of Brexit Secretary David Davis’ resignation was known of in the early hours of Monday morning, there was a sharp drop in initial trading.

The markets then braced themselves for an even bigger fall some hours later when Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also handed in his resignation to 10 Downing Street, but it didn’t materialise.

Investors in the euro have seen the currency trading around the €1.13 level - having briefly fallen into the €1.12 territory - for most of the week, showing a substantial recovery from Monday’s fall.

The pound noticeably rallied on Tuesday when it became clear that there wasn’t going to be - for now - a challenge to Theresa May, after gaining the support of her back-

Inheritance rules cause confusion SAVERS who have recently lost their partner are being confused by the apparent complex rules as to how much of their ISA allowance they can inherit.

Since 2014, widows, widowers and civil partners who become bereaved have been able to claim an extra ISA allowance called the Additional Permitted Subscription (APS). This comes on top of the usual ISA allowance ... currently £20,000 for the current UK tax year that began on April 6.

The APS can be put into cash ISAs in your own name and some of the high street banks and building societies offer various schemes such as an Inherited ISA or Legacy ISA. However, and according to new rules introduced this April, this depends on the amount of money the partner had in their ISA when they died.

If they passed away between December 4, 2014 - when the APS was first introduced and April 5 this year, their ISAs lose their tax-free status from the date they died.

This means that any interest paid while the estate is being wound up is taxable and cannot be used to boost the APS. Therefore, if the deceased person had £30,000 in their ISA when they died within the above timeframe, this would be all the partner would get as their extra ISA allowance.

However, if they died on April 6 this year or later, any interest paid while the estate is being wound up is also tax-free.

I AM not what you would call a football fanatic, but if it’s England playing in the World Cup, then I’m right there with half the population of the UK. Likewise if it’s my home town Reading playing in the football Championship, then I shall always go out of my way to watch the game. You can’t beat a good laugh I always say.

So that’s been me over the last two weeks, and although we are currently rehearsing for our October production of Calendar Girls, I have shortened proceedings on the appropriate evenings in order for those of us who are interested, to get back home to cheer on the lads.

At the time of writing, England have progressed to the semi-finals and at the time of publication we will either be looking forward to our first World Cup final since 1966 and stocking up on beer and wine, or the boys will be on their way home with thoughts of what might have been and blaming Brexit.

I have enjoyed most of the live TV coverage, and I have often wondered how much time goes into targeting individual fans in the crowd by the director

It’s the same with Wimbledon and I feel sure that before coverage begins, the camera operators know exactly where the most attractive individuals are positioned.

But one thing struck me this time around in Russia, that whilst every country seemed to have beautiful girls cheering on their teams in seemingly large numbers, there was not one shot, that I can recall, of female English fans

who would grace the cover of Dandy, let alone Vogue or Cosmopolitan.

This sounds very sexist, but it’s a fact that it’s the TV director who specifies the close-ups, and as often as not chooses beautiful young women to home in on.

I have not been able to see all the games, but those I have watched, the sheer numbers of good-looking lady supporters have been impressive.

France, Denmark, Brazil, Spain, and Germany - each with an army of young things yelling their lovely heads off.

When we played Sweden, there was close-up after close-up of blonde Nordic lovelies and long shots of great swathes of blue and yellow in the stadium.

Contrast that to close-ups of English men and youths - in great voice admittedly - but very little in the way of goodlooking young female fans who must surely have been present, and a long shot showing a sea of tattooed skin with the occasional flag of St George.

Then it hit me. Given the problems between the UK and Russia right now, would this be Russian television’s way of depicting the English in a certain light that is to say the least, unflattering?

Just a thought.

A RUSSIAN multimillion pound satellite recently launched from the Baikonur launch facility has been irretrievably lost. The control computer was programmed for launch at a different site. (Ouch!)

Hard to believe, but 2017 was the greenest year yet for the UK. For the first time wind, solar and nuclear generated more power than gas and coal combined.

An ancient plague returns. Bolivia has declared a State of Emergency as vast agricultural areas, where most of Bolivian food and meat is produced, has been seriously affected by a plague of locusts.

The dinosaurs thrived on this planet for more than 150 million years. But long before they disappeared they were beginning to grow feathers. Now, more than 10,000 species of birds populate every part of this planet, and every one is a descendant of the dinosaurs. The genes that caused this evolutionary change have now been identified by US scientists.

BOLIVIAN EMERGENCY: A biblical plague of locusts.

Signals and quantum: Two things caught my attention recently and deserve a slightly longer airing than usual, so please bear with me.

One, you could shrug your shoulders and say, only another ‘big bang’ thing, but it is quite awesome, if you think about these things, which I do.

The second is well out of our comprehension, Einstein couldn’t get his head round it, so why should we, but it’s a

good story anyway!

Scientists in Western Australia have at last detected signals dating back to the very first stars that began to shine after the ‘big bang,’ roughly 180 million years later. (ie Some nine billion before our earth was formed.)

The cold hydrogen that filled the universe (number one on the periodic table you probably learnt at school) mixing with the ultra-violet light from the first stars ra-

diated out across the universe at a radio frequency of 78 megahertz. These massive stars died young in huge supernova explosions, spewing out across the early universe all the heavier life-forming elements without which we would not be here.

Whatever life there is in the vastness of the universe, it all came from these early stars; indeed, we are all made from stardust. The telescope (if that’s what you can call it) looked like a sheet of plate glass a little smaller than a table tennis table supported by six legs!

The second item relates to attempts to make a quantum computer using electrons which have a positive or negative charge. The thing is, they can change polarity, or be both at the same time, then all other electrons change at the same instant and can appear to be in several places at once! Einstein called it ‘spooky happenings at a distance.’

We all know that computers operate by the use of two figures, one and zero. But experts think that if they could be both one and zero at the same time it might be possible to construct a computer with limitless capacity. I don’t know why. There is already a supercomputer that can make 1.75 quadrillion calculations-a-second, the equivalent, to the power of 50,000 laptops.

Anyone with a better explanation, let me know, Einstein didn’t!

There is relentless pressure to desecrate the mausoleum of former Spanish leader Francisco Franco (1892 - 1975) by removing his mortal remains.

Those who espouse Stalinist ideology never give up with their creepy taste for necrophilia. E M Godden, in Conflict in Spain, says on p72, ‘During the last week of July, 1936, the bodies of nuns were exhumed from their graves and propped up outside the walls of their convents. Obscene and offensive placards were attached to their bodies.’

The Spanish Civil War (1936 1939) listed 731 Christian martyrs, who were sainted by the Roman Catholic Church in 2001 and 2007. In the canonisation of several martyrs, Pope Benedict said: “Adding such a great number

Some 3,400 ecclesiastics were slaughtered during the first stages of the Civil War. By the end of the war a total of 7,000 clergymen and 3,000 religious people had been murdered for practising Catholicism.

Soviet dissident and Gulag survivor Alexander Solzhenitsyn explained why we don’t read more about atrocities committed by the left ... ‘ownership of the media is in the hands of the pepetrators.’

Besides, journalism attracts those with liberal-left tendencies notorious for censoring genocide committed by globalists. These include atrocities committed by Republicans during and after the Spanish Civil War.

Going loco for coconut oil

Taken internally - either eaten straight off the spoon or used in cooking - coconut oil boosts levels of ‘good’ cholesterol, helps to fight infection and improves the immune system.

The product, which has a solid, frosting-like texture at room temperature, melts with the warmth of your hands and makes an excellent all-round moisturiser. Its natural antioxidant levels will help ward off the effects of pollution and delay wrinkles on both the face and body.

The oil makes a gentle and effective eye make-up remover and a great natural lip balm. Used before going in the sun, it provides natural low levels of SPF, and will nourish your skin at the same time. If you’re thinking of trying coconut oil for any of its uses, though, it’s worth bearing in mind there are several different qualities, and organic, virgin products will give you the best results. Hydrogenated coconut oil is unhealthy to cook with and oily rather than moisturising if used on the skin or hair.

Orba Warblers Golf Society A SOMEWHAT depleted field teed-off at Alenda Golf for their last game.

Whether it was down to the hot weather or the support of the overseas members who are sorely missed, they’ll never know.

This competition was a Stableford One Division on a nearly empty golf course which was well presented and, on a cooler day, would’ve certainly allowed some very good scores, Nevertheless, a few of the group showed how it should be done, and none more so than Peter Gibson who won with 37 points. Runner-up with 35 points was Mike Taylor who narrowly defeated Fred Cooley into third spot on count back. The ever present David Knight was fourth with 32 points.

Busters Golf Society AS they left to play at El Platio, the golfers knew that it would only get hotter as the day progressed, but it was well worth it to play on such an excellent course.

Thankfully, the breeze in the face as they drove between shots in the buggies kept everyone cool on a course that was playing long with some equally long grass in places on the greens which were being constantly watered.

The BF9 was won by Martin Collins with 17 points and the BB9 by Barry Grinsell with 16. Nearest The Pins were won by Nikki Ead (hole 7), Bill Peters (9), Helen Kinsella (14) and John Chatham (18).

On the day, third place went to Stephen ‘Gilly’ Gilbert with 29 points with Bill Peters and Helen Kinsella tied for first place with 30 points each; Helen winning by dint of her having a better back nine.

All 18 players commented on the quality of the course although none of them were able to beat it.

Nevertheless, snacks and drinks supplied by Rik and Lisa were enjoyed once they returned to Quesada Mini Golf, and thanks go to them and all the staff for having the tables ready and waiting for the presentations.

CD TORREVIEJA are now pleased to confirm that Jesús Sánchez Ricarte will join the Club, after both they and the player agreed a deal.

Jesús will play left-back, although he is also able to play left-wing. He stands out for his agility and skill, his versatility, his hard work and commitment and his excellent stopped-ball kicks.

The 25-year-old player from Elche, joins CD Torrevieja from Crevillente Deportivo and also brings Third Division experience with him after spending two seasons with Martos CD. He has even played in the Second Division B with Real Jaén CF in 2014/2015, besides finishing his training at Hércules CF to then play in their reserve team.

motoring TEST DRIVE by Tim Saunders

Citroen C3 MANY motorists crave looks and economy but they don’t necessarily have the budgets for both.

So the Citroen C3 with its 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine is sure to win many hearts and minds. It’s the most efficient car I have driven for a very long time.

With its blue bodywork and white roof, the five-door hatchback looks sporty and stylish.

It should also not suffer supermarket trolleys gladly… thanks to Citroen’s patented Bump technology.

Ram a trolley into the door and it should rebound and likely do the assailant a bit of damage. It reminds me of when my dad bought a car and on parking in a supermarket car park a nasty dent appeared in the door from a trolley. It remained there for evermore.

Although Citroen’s Bump technology will tackle many trolley problems on doors it cannot cover all eventualities and does not deal with oafs in 4x4s who get out and slam their doors uncaringly into the poor little car next to them. I think Citroen would do well to cover most of the bodywork of their cars in this

Bump technology. Dent removal companies would suddenly experience a drop in trade.

Inside the C3 there’s daring orange leather on the dashboard and on the edges of the black fabric seats as well as around the steering wheel. It’s also practical.

The petrol engine is responsive and I like the five-speed manual gearbox and traditional handbrake. There’s engine stop/start and on a full 45-litre tank it will easily cover over 500 miles. Pretty impressive.

Head on it looks quite chunky with its large grille and bumper and inside there’s a reasonable amount of space with an adequate boot for a car of this size. Of course, with all the Saunders’ luggage it is often necessary to remove the parcel shelf and this occasion is no different. If only our daughters could travel light but even on a sleepover at their grandparents it seems they need to take the kitchen sink.

The sat nav is easy to use but try as I might I cannot get it to allow me to search by postcode, which is a pain. That said, it is a trustworthy system and I am impressed how it introduces me to some of Devon’s scenic

Facts at a glance country roads that I have not come across before and I am all the better for this experience.

The C3 can be driven with urgency and it will not disappoint. Driving in Britain during the day has become an utter waste of time due to endless traffic jams and so it is a joy to drive early in the morning or late at night when the roads are quiet. It actually takes us just two hours to travel from Hampshire to Devon at 6am. The same journey during the day can take up to six hours.

On a decent long stretch of road the C3 overtakes six cars in a row, all crawling along at under 50mph. It is a very safe manoeuvre, I reassure my wife as she moans at my needless risk taking. No risk whatsoever and the Citroen conducts itself splendidly without even breaking into a sweat. My wife, on the other hand … It’s by no means a super-fast car but it is quick and does feel like a sports car when the revs are high and the road is clear.
