Fire risk JAVEA Council has given the green light to a prevention of forest fires plan. The document sets out measures to help save the large forest area and, more importantly, help protect residents and their properties.

The fire prevention plan will be valid for 10 years and was developed as a direct result of the area’s Granadella fire, which forced the eviction of thousands of residents, destroyed houses and 812 hectares of land.

Residents surrounding the forest area will receive fire prevention training and the forest areas will be cleared of dry vegetation.

Dress code for taxi drivers TAXI drivers in Benidorm will now be required to wear a uniform.

Following an agreement between the Regional Taxi Confederation and the town council, all of the drivers working within the tourist resort will be required to comply with the dress code.

Male drivers must wear a plain coloured shirt, or polo shirt with a collar. Sleeveless shirts will not be permitted. Trousers must be either blue or black, with jeans and shorts being banned.

WHILST so many people think of the sun and holidays during the months of July and August, there is a real and hidden problem concerning the well-being of domestic animals.

Cats and dogs don’t always get remembered during the holiday season and sadly many are simply put on the streets as it may be too expensive or too much of a chore to bother about finding accommodation for them.

There are of course a number of very willing and dedicated volunteers who are prepared to look after these and other strays either as foster carers for individual animals or in rescue homes. Under normal circumstances this is fairly straightforward and most laudable but the summer brings a special problem.

Many of the officials responsible for catching the animals go on holiday in August which means that the number of stray animals on the streets increases and some impatient vets simply put the animals to sleep in order to clear their practices before they close down.

During this month in particular, rather than buying a pedigree cat or dog, it would be so much more caring to contact one of the rescue centres to adopt one of the strays that they have

Not only will you be helping an animal, you can be sure that you will take possession of an animal which has been checked by a professional and spayed to ensure no future unexpected members of the family.

It is quite surprising how many people in Spain own a dog and treat them exceptionally well, yet overlook basic rules of sense, not necessarily because they are inherently bad, but because they just don’t think things through.

Nowadays most owners carry a small plastic bag around with them in order to collect the inevitable mess that a dog will make but, whilst the streets are much cleaner than they used to be, the latest problem is that not everyone disposes of their black bags sensibly but often drops them over fences into peoples gardens!

The sad fact however is that there is a necessity for rescue centres in most large towns, which rely heavily upon donations and fundraising events.

With a few exceptions, many councils take the view that it is impractical to provide long term care for strays but will instead arrange for them to be destroyed after perhaps two weeks of being unclaimed.

Enjoy your pet but ensure that it is treated as an important member of the family, not pampered, but equally looked after and allowed to live a comfortable life.

Brit shot in crossfire HOLIDAYMAKERS fled the British Square ‘Guiri zone’ area in Benidorm on Wednesday night as a young man was shot.

In what is currently believed to have been a turf war over drug trafficking, a British holidaymaker was caught in the crossfire and shot in the leg.

Police rapidly closed off the area and shortly afterwards arrests were made in both Benidorm and Villajoyosa hospital, where one was attending having been wounded in the battle.

The shooting, which occurred at approximately 11pm, was initially thought to be a terrorist attack by those at the scene and caused a social media frenzy, quickly being picked up by the British tabloids.

Several witnesses posted their experiences, Mark Johnson tweeted: “We were sat on our hotel balcony and heard three shots, two guys running off and a load of lads chasing them with chairs, there are police everywhere.”

Another witness posted: “An altercation started in the main strip, next thing you know there are about 40-50 lads running up the street. Me and my mum and sister ran into one of the clubs where we heard three to four gunshots. The young lad who was shot was taken to hospital with his girlfriend ... there was blood everywhere.”

HOLIDAYMAKER: Caught in the crossfire.

Strike AMBULANCE workers began a strike at the Villajoyosa Hospital this week, demanding better wages and job reclassification.

The ASV workers gathered with banners to protest that agreements reached in arbitration last year had still not been met.

The ambulance drivers earn a basic of €1,000 but are calling to be recognised as health technicians which comes with a basic salary of €1,400.

Emergency calls have not been affected by the strike.

Extra luxury for Alicante City

by Glenn Scott ALICANTE City centre will soon have its second luxury five-star hotel.

The existing building, adjacent to the town hall and located on Calle Altamira, is now owned by NH Hotel in Mexico City and has already begun some internal demoli-

tion works in preparation for the 50 room establishment.

The only other five-star hotel in Alicante is the Amerigo ... just a few metres away.

The building has until now been home to residents, with a furniture shop in the basement that was one of the oldest shops in the city.

It has its tragic history too

as, back in 1943, the building was one of the most affected by an explosion at the El Gato armoury that left 17 dead and 62 buildings demolished and rebuilt.

According to a report in the Spanish media, work on the sanitation and drainage systems have already commenced and are in advance of the formal work permits to

complete the project.

Alicante City has enjoyed a spectacular growth in its hotel trade in recent years and currently has 28 hotels open ... which doesn’t include official and regulated apartment buildings. The city offers around 6,500 rooms, with an average 70 per cent annual occupancy rate.

Concern at lack of child medics BETWEEN July 15 and September 15, health centres across Alicante will be closed in the afternoons after 3pm. The consequence is that anyone needing attention after that time of the day will have to go to just three health care points ... but the problem is that none of these has the services of a paediatrician.

This will force people, instead, to go to the emergency departments of the Alicante General Hospital and in neighbouring San Juan if they need specialist care.

The health centre at Cabo Huertas is the only one in the entire city that keeps to its usual hours and numbers of medical professionals, including paediatricians, due to the increase in its population during the summer months.

According to the Spanish media, the lack of paediatricians can lead to a collapse in the hospital A&E departments that are already overloaded with patients.

A spokesperson for Marea Blanca - an organisation that fights for patients’ rights in the Spanish NHS - said: “The lack of paediatricians can lead to losing the opportunity of identifying diseases and increasing the chances of conditions worsening due to a lack of adequate follow-ups.”

POLICE officers in Finestrat have become pilots as the town showcases their new equipment, two drones.

A special ceremony was held this week to officially present the use of drones in the town, where it is hoped they will assist in rescues on the Puig Campana mountain.

Mayor Juan Francisco Perez said: “We want to be on the frontline for new technology and launch innovative projects in the field of security and tourism, providing connectivity to the mountain area of the Puig Campana. The drones will also be used for security in the prevention of fires.”

Spend a penny

A BENIDORM resident faces 24 years in prison for killing his wife in 2016.

The Prosecutors Office called for the heavy sentence at a preliminary hearing in Alicante. The case will be tried by a jury later in the year.

The man is accused of stabbing his wife 11 times before attempting to kill himself, in a relationship that had come to the attention of the authorities in the past.

Previously the 48-yearold victim had reported her husband’s cruel and violent tendencies to the authorities, however she continued to live with him and their two children.

Fearing retribution, she appeared reluctant to accept outside help and take legal action against him.

FREE activities for children have returned to La Cala de Finestrat for the summer.

The Department of Tourism opened the fun programme of activities this week, which will run from now until September 8.

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10am until 2pm, children from three upwards can participate in sports such as beach volleyball, beach football, badminton and handball. For those more artistic there will be crafts and balloon modelling. The sandcastle contests are sure to inspire even the parents to join in, with the initiative aiming to encourage family play.

Juan Francisco Pérez, mayor, said: “This fun programme for the little ones is free, as we have been doing for years. In recent summers we have had an average of about 80 children taking part daily, with 130 on busy days. Those joining in are either residents of Finestrat or those spending their holidays in La Cala. It works very well and that is why we are offering it for another summer.”

Free Zumba classes on the beach also return this year for the summer. Every Wednesday at 10.30am anyone is able to join in the activity which is taught by professional instructors. On a just turn up and go basis, the classes proved very popular last year.

For the children’s activities registration is also not necessary, those wishing to take part simply need to go to the beach space located between the Lifeguard post and the children’s playground.

THE first self-washable public toilets in the Marina Alta have been opened in Benissa.

The facilities, adapted to be fully accessible to the disabled, are located in the park area of the town and available for use between the hours of 9am and 10pm.

The prefabricated structures sanitises themselves after each use and are also designed to be vandalism proof.

Fire averted FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze near the Mascarat tunnel on the AP-7 near Dénia on Monday, and avoided the fire becoming more serious through their quick actions.

The incident occurred after a car driver noticed that his vehicle was

overheating, and upon opening the bonnet was met with flames which then quickly spread to nearby trees.

W hilst no-one was injur ed, an area of approximately 200 square metres was destroyed by the blaze.

COUNTERFEIT GOODS: Market raid in Benidorm.

Market raid GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized over 500 counterfeit items in Benidorm.

In a coordinated move, officers raided the market located in the Rincon de Loix

area of the resort and confiscated 508 counterfeit items, with an estimate value of more than €27,000.

New ‘app’ LA NUCIA has announced plans to launch a mobile ‘app’ to help manage resident complaints. It is hoped that the ‘App La Nucia’ will be up and running during July, offering an opportunity to resolve incidents quickly, but also allowing the reporting of street lamp failures, dirty social areas or abandoned vehicles.

The initiative has been created to centralise all forms of information, requests and complaints.

In a timed raid, to avoid sellers being tipped off by lookouts, they swooped on the suspects, resulting in six people being detained.

Officers carried out a similar raid a few weeks ago, seizing over 4,300 counterfeit items.

Dangerous waters

NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested three men and confiscated a substantial quantity of drugs in the northern Costa Blanca.

Officers seized more than five kilos of narcotic substances in addition to an estimated 500 marihuana plants during two raids, one in Altea and the other in Albir.

The first operation took place in Albir. Officers arrested two suspects at a property who were found to be in possession of more than two kilos of cocaine.

In the second operation undercover officers followed the suspects to a property in Altea, here they discovered a marihuana plantation containing nearly 500 plants over one metre in height, three kilos of marihuana buds and a quantity of cocaine.

Renovation LA NUCIA has begun restoration work on the facade of the town’s church.

With a budget of €47,000, the mouldings, which are now in a poor condition, will be repaired and the lining of the main wall will be cleaned.

Scaffolding currently shrouds the La Purisima Concepcion in La Nucia church, with works anticipated to last for six weeks.

Mayor Bernabe Cano said: “The restoration work is necess a r y, n o t o n l y t o i m p r o v e t h e image of the building, but also some mouldings have already fallen, making it a danger to the public.”

AS two women were rescued from strong waves at the weekend, bathers are reminded to watch for beach flags and strong currents.

The young ladies, aged 23 and 24, were pulled from the sea at the weekend, having got into trouble swimming in the Moraig cove of Poble Nou de Benitachell.

With a yellow flag flying, due to the sea swell, the swimmers were hindered from returning to the shore by the strong waves and current.

As they were approximately 50 metres from the shoreline, a lifeguard spotted their distress and a rescue operation was launched.

Fortunately, neither of the ladies suffered any injuries but bothwere suffering from exhaustion.

A 36-year-old male was arrested at this location.

The three men, one Cuban and two Spanish, between 35 and 40 years old, have been charged with crimes against public health.

The individual in Altea was also charged with using an illegal electrical supply to grow the marihuana plants.

EL CAMPELLO beaches have again been awarded blue flags.

Cynthia Alaves, councillor for Beaches said: “It is an honour to receive this award again, highlighting the quality of our waters and the services that we provide.”

Over the weekend a total of 3,520 kg of rubbish was removed from the beaches and coves by 30 people.

SUMMER SCHEDULE: All aboard the night train.

Summer brings more trams TRAM services between Alicante and Denia switch to their summer schedule this weekend.

With an increased demand for public transport during the warm summer evenings, from today (Friday) until September 1 additional services will operate through the night.

Routes benefitting from the additional times are the San Joan - Sant Vicent del

Raspeig - Campello - Benidorm line, and also Benidorm - Denia line, although passengers are still required to transfer to buses at Calpe due to ongoing works in Denia.

EASING PARKING BATTLES: Benidorm bus station, offering 233 spaces.

Parking advice A BROCHURE, detailing where to park around Benidorm, has been produced to help alleviate traffic congestion.

During the summer months, the resort becomes saturated with vehicles driving round and round the crowded streets seeking a free parking spot, and occasionally resulting in two or more cars battling over one space.

It is hoped the new measures will encourage drivers to look further afield, to one of the 29 zones offering more than 3,800 free spaces.

The initiative will highlight areas, such as the train station in the old town and bus station in the new town, as ideal locations to leave a vehicle without incurring charges.

Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate stated that, in addition to the brochure, signs will highlight the free areas.

He said: “It is hoped to avoid the saturation of parking that currently occurs in the town, enabling residents to park near their homes and work vehicles to have better access.”

The information will be available throughout July and will provide users with the number of spaces available at each location, and where the nearest public transport stops are.

The councillor said: “Although most of the zones are very close to public transport stops we have also been in discussion with Llorente Bus to establish new routes which will help to improve the parking service.”

THE annual Bulls in the Sea Fiesta takes place in Denia from Saturday to July 15.

Film festival comes to town Ayuntamiento Alfaz del Pi

THE Lazaro Project in Villajoyosa has announced that more than 33,840 kg of clothing was collected in the towns 17 containers during the first half of 2018.

The non-profit association, which is committed to social welfare, help 4,000 families in difficult situations and 2,746 homeless people. In the last five years the organisation has recycled 4,000 tonnes of clothing and helped reduced Co2 emissions by an estimated 200,000 kg. Full details: www.denia.es.

Pool delay BENIDORM’S public swimming pool opening was delayed due to a lack of lifeguards.

The facility, which should have opened on June 16, is located in the Ciudad D e p o r t i v a Guillermo Amor.

LAST week I was banned from Facebook for 24 hours for violating its ‘community standards’ by posting a picture of a topless model on a page I manage for the atheist journal, the Freethinker, which I have been editing for more than 20 years.

I thought long and hard before posting the photo of Belgian model Marisa Papen posing naked on a balcony overlooking the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

I even checked Facebook’s rules concerning nudity, and this is what it says: “We understand that nudity can be shared for a variety of reasons, including as a form of protest, to raise awareness about a cause, or for educational or medical reasons. Where such intent is clear, we make allowances for the content.”

Well, as it happens Papen WAS registering a protest: she said she was all for breaking down walls ‘built to keep all our wandering souls on this planet somehow under control.’

She added, “freedom is becoming a very luxurious thing.”

The first episodes I saw of Love Thy Neighbour made me uncomfortable because, having escaped apartheid South Africa, I saw a reflection in the Booth character of the many white racists I’d grown up with in that country.

On the other hand, the fact that Reynolds was shown to gain the upper hand in every episode delighted me no end, for no black man in South Africa was ever allowed to backchat a ‘superior’ white man.

At about the same time, I became friendly with David Smith, who taught at a comprehensive in Tottenham, and he often gave after-school tuition to many of his black pupils.

As he lived in the bedsit next to

mine, I got to know a number of these youngsters well.

They loved the show, not least because in those days there were so few black actors on the small screen. One of the children, a lad called Brian Bovell, who was around 15 at the time, cockily said to me: “Watch that screen Barry, one day I’m gonna be on the tellie.”

And he made it, big time. From the beginning of 1980, he began appearing regularly on TV. In 1982 he won the London Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor of 1981 for his role in a play called Where There is Darkness.

He then landed parts in movies such as Love Actually and Secrets and Lies. Some of his most famous roles have been DC Rob Thatcher in The Bill, Jez Littlewood in Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, and Detective Andy Sharp in My Dad’s the Prime Minister. More recently he landed the part of Bishop John Thornber in ITV’s Coronation Street.

Brian, now 58, does not have a presence on Facebook, and I have to say I cannot blame him. I’m beginning to think Facebook is more hassle than it is worth, now that today’s snowflakes appear to be calling all the shots.

THE Moraira beach had to be closed for a short period of time, as sightings of the dreaded Portuguese jellyfish along the shores had been reported.

Fortunately at the time of the sighting, the beach was empty, however, as the jellyfish had been spotted offshore, boats and kayaks took to the water and searched the coastal area.

SEWAGE UPDATE: Digging deep.

ALFA DEL PI Council are continuing to update their sewage network, with Calle Oslo and Norway being the latest streets to benefit.

The new channelling for rainwater, the sewage system and the reorganisation of the road layouts form part of the town’s budget spend of €683,409, funding allocated for improvements. Projects such as this will be ongoing and should all be completed later in the year.

Blue bathers THE Costa Blanca coastline has been inundated with Blue Flag awards, with Calpe’s three beaches proudly joining other communities in celebrating the accolade.

The Arenal-Bol, Cantal Roig and La Fossa beaches are already flying the flags, with the La Fossa having received the award for 32 consecutive years.

Council employee Juan Antonio Andrés, who has maintained the beaches for the past 40 years, was given the honour of raising the flags as he prepares for his retirement soon.

ANNUAL COMPETITION: The beautiful old town in Calpe.

Blooming balconies are being prepared RESIDENTS and businesses in Calpe are preparing for their annual balcony competition, with monetary prizes up for grabs.

This will be the 12th year that the town has held the event which focuses on the old town area, with the competition being split into two categories.

Residents will be judged on the best balcony and outside area, with first place being awarded €500, second €350 and third €150.

In the second category prizes remain the same and will be awarded to busi-

nesses who show a flare for making their outside area just that bit more special than their neighbours.

Judging will take place from August 7 with the jury looking for the entrant’s use of natural plants, the innovation of the design and the use of recycled flame retardant, non-polluting materials.

All entrants will be required to maintain their balcony or outside area until October 31, so the competition is not for the faint hearted, with the initiative helping to raise awareness among locals and visitors of the importance and value

of the old town area.

In previous years the competition has added to the historic centre, which boast a Sunday craft market, and displays several murals and colourful mosaics from the painter and muralist Gastón Castelló that represents his vision of Calpe.

CLEAR SIGNAGE: To help birdwatchers.

CALPE Town Hall has announced several walking routes, specifically to promote ornithological tourism.

In particular, routes have been created in the Morro de Toix, in the Serra d’Oltà, an area declared a special conservation area for birds, as well as in the ecological walk Princess of Asturias, located at the foot of the Calpe rock.

During the month of July it is hoped to also open a similar route near the salt mines, with clear signage helping

visitors identify the birds.

Birdwatching is a growing form of tourism for the town, with the Department of Tourism joining forces with the Department of Environment to capitalise on this growth, whilst ensuring that the areas populated by the many different species which visit the area throughout the year are as undisturbed as possible.

The Salinas (salt mines) walk will be 2.3 km long and take an estimated 45 min-

utes to complete, with birdwatchers having the opportunity to see one or several of the 173 different types of birds that have been recorded at that location.

The ecotourism offers something for all abilities, with the Calpe rock route only 0.7 km distance and an estimated duration of 10 minutes, to the more adventurous Serra d’Oltà, which is 3.6 km and would take approximately one hour 30 minutes.

MEDIEVAL MARKET: Entertainment for all ages.

Going back in time THE 14th annual Medieval Market in La Nucia will take visitors back to ‘ye olde’ times.

It will run from Friday to Sunday, 6pm until midnight.

Visitors will be able to browse around the 60 stalls, seeing the quality of the craftspeople and the work they do using materials such as clay, leather, glass, wood, fabric, iron and cop-

per. In addition to the live demonstrations many of the stallholders invite members of the public to have a go themselves.

Visitor numbers are expected to exceed 10,000, as troubadours, knights, storytellers, musicians and other characters mingle with the public. For the younger audience there will be board games, an animal farm,

pony rides and a mythological carousel to ensure that all ages are catered for.

A new feature for this year will be a medieval camp. The area will host archery workshops, medieval combat demonstrations and activities for children.

Dry over there - wet over here DURING the same week that figures from the UK showed that parts of the country had its driest June since records began, the Alicante Province had its largest rainfall in the month for 10 years.

June was a very humid month and the average temperature in the province was 23º. Rainfall levels reached 48.91 litres per square metre,

which is almost double the norm that was recorded during the period from 1981 to 2010.

Weather stations in Novelda and Villena recorded the highest rainfall after storms left around 60 litres per m2, a 170 per cent increase when compared to normal June levels.

Crevillente had 37.4 litres, Alicante 28, Torrevieja 26 and AlicanteElche Airport with 24.

However, despite the storms during May and June, the nine months of the current ‘weather year’ since October 1 in the Valencian Community have seen an average drop of 30 per cent precipitation, with some regions of the coast getting less than half.

Some of the driest areas were in Santa Pola and Rojales that only had 14.2 lm2 and 17.8 lm2 respectively.

June unemployment falls LEVELS of unemployment fell by 3,800 across the Alicante Province for the month of June. Once again, it’s the levels of increased tourism to the area that enables businesses to create new jobs and have accounted for 71 per cent of the fall in the numbers of people looking for work.

Despite unemployment numbers staying at 144,735, Alicante has been able to record the largest drop in unemployment of the three

Valencian Community provinces.

Throughout the month of June a total of 65,839 new contracts of employment were registered, although only 6,153 of those were permanent.

Self-employment registrations also grew by 6,826 during last month, over 1,000 lower than the corresponding period in 2017, taking the total number to 129,949 out of 525,438 people in work in the Alicante Province.

levels of English at the facility.

around 800,000 of them saving an average of just under €450 a year, whilst 16 per cent of the over-65’s will benefit, or a total of around 600,000, who will be €600 a year better off.

THANKS to a series of new tax deductions announced in the recently approved budget, the Bank of Spain has calculated that residents with a gross income between €12,000 and €18,000 per year will save around €500 a year.

Anyone whose gross pay is less than €12,000 doesn’t pay any income tax in Spain, although if it’s paid through monthly stoppages by the employers, they will receive a rebate when filing the annual declaration.

Taxpayers that exceed the €18,000 level will also see their payments reduced if they fall into certain categories such as having large families, disabled and carers.

The Bank of Spain estimates that around 3.1 million people will benefit from the new policy which will cost the Treasury €1.5 billion ... less than the €2.2 billion originally budgeted.

into any of the categories mentioned, the Bank of Spain still has some reassuring news, however: nobody will see their income tax rise as a result of the reforms in the budget.

However, it’s not all good

news. The self-employed, who make up around a third of the workforce in the country, have seen their monthly Social Security contributions increase ... albeit a small rise from the set fee of €275.01 to €278.87.

A SERIES of pension payment errors by the HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs) that date back over 40 years have been uncovered. This could result in some pensioners experiencing a cut in the yearly income, with others gaining.

The errors were found during cleanup of data that began back in 2014, and has to date been the largest involving retirement payments in the UK’s history.

According to a report featured in sections of the UK press, some pensioners are predicted to lose up to 50 per cent of their annual payments. However, those assessed as not having been paid the correct amounts will receive the back pay and a future rise in their pensions.

It’s been calculated that the missed payments to pensioners could range from as little as £50 per year to around £10,000 over the course of a lifetime, and affect both public and private sector schemes.

A UK government spokesman said: “The reconciliation exercise has been underway for some time. Most queries submitted as part of the exercise do not have an impact on the amount of an individual’s state pension.

“However where queries do result in changes, we are notified by HMRC, and where the pension is in payment, review the award and notify the individual of the change. Where overpayments of State Pension do occur due to incorrect GMP figures, individuals will not be expected to repay any overpayments.”

IT was a big night of thanks and celebrations at Javea U3A’s June Dining Out meeting.

More than 120 members enjoyed a meal al fresco at Restaurant Chalet Suizo and gave a special vote of thanks to Peter and Pauline Speer, who have decided to take a wellearned rest after leading the group for the last 11 years.

Coincidentally, it was also Pauline’s birthday and the couple’s 57th wedding anniversary so it was a particularly happy event.

New group leaders Mallory and Christine Glover thanked Peter and Pauline for their sterling work over the years and presented them with a gift as a token of appreciation from several of the members.

Former Javea U3A president Eric Atkins also added his congratulations, thanking the couple for their wonderful contribution over such a long period.

Support for charities THE Giving4Giving furniture warehouse has proved to be a welcome source of funding for the charity which recently reached a €100,000 donation milestone.

Germany lurches from crisis to crisis under a rickety coalition regime. As an aside, post-war Germany is hindered by an illegal constitution imposed by the Allies in 1945. Germany’s armed forces surrendered but the twice-elected constitutional NSDAP government (1933-1945) never capitulated.

Malignant dictatorships have a short shelf-life. Despite benefiting from massive Western investment and their being rescued in the Second World War by the US and UK, the Soviet Union survived just 77 years.

Marino Rajoy’s minority Spanish administration recently collapsed after losing a vote of confidence. The future of President Emmanuel Macron of France is uncertain. Elected on a deeply flawed process, two-thirds of

In Britain, Prime Minister May had no choice but to enlist the support of a handful of bigoted Northern Ireland legislators to dodge the election bullet.

Europe’s strong, popular and successful nations are those in the anti-EU Visegrad Bloc; Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia, Austria stands at the door. Elsewhere in the EU, there isn’t a single successful popular government.

Benjamin Franklin summed up the dilemma of alliance government, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

Latvia is the third most impoverished nation in the shambolic EUSSR. In Riga, a lovely well-ordered city under the latter day Soviets, one constantly trips over street beggars.

Germany, plundered and divided by the Allies after the Second

World War, was finally reunited in 1990 with large bits missing and then divided up between the conquerors. Many who lived in the Soviet-occupied zone say life was better under Moscow’s jackboot than it is under Merkel and the EU’s two unelected presidents and 27 commissioners.

Such is the people’s revulsion of their decrepit and corrupt EU regimes that there is a massive electoral surge in favour of antiglobalist, anti-immigrant, populist parties. Hungary, Austria, Italy, Czech and Slovak Republics, others too, are in favour of the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions.

The Brussels regime has, this week, again nodded through an extension of the anti-Russian sanctions that cost us €3.2 billion a month and thousands of lost jobs. The sanctions serve only to strengthen the Russian economy.

Lord Kerr, who helped enormously to draft EU Article 50, which sets out the terms of membership, concedes, “Article 50 was designed to be used by a dictatorial regime.”

So, tell me again Tommy Atkins, for what did you and your generation fight? “I fought for fake news, sir.”

MY stomach was beginning to tune up loudly as I boarded the bus for the airport terminal.

I was still mentally berating myself for missing a sumptuous breakfast that would have set me up for my journey, more so because I had paid in advance for the privilege.

From the hotel it is a relatively short journey to Stansted’s terminal, from where the free shuttle to the Car Rental Village runs every 10 minutes; then it would be the open road for me and the drive to Berkshire, the first stop on my UK tour.

With the M11, M25 and M4 between me and my destination, ‘open road’ is perhaps a misnomer, but nevertheless, I should be there by mid-afternoon.

By the time I alighted the bus, my digestive system was beginning Tchaikovsky’s 1812, so seeing a mobile cafe adjacent to the coach park, I made

my way over to what turned out to be a Pasty Shack.

I was still in plenty of time to collect my car from the rental people and, with my intestinal orchestra now in full swing, it was a choice between my emaciated corpse being found somewhere along the motorway hard shoulder or taking a few minutes out

to restore my waning strength.

I have never seen such a variety of pie fillings. They ranged from traditional lamb to turkey and pickle, and even curried mussel, but I played safe by ordering a steak and onion jobbie and plonked myself down at one of the plastic tables provided.

couple had sat at a nearby table where they were eyeing their chosen pasties with looks of bewilderment.

“These were the traditional food of the tin miners in Cornwall in days gone by,” I informed the pair (I had heard them talking to the counter assistant and knew they spoke English).

“And this thick piece of pastry around the outside,” I illustrated, “is how they held the pasty as they ate this bit,” and I demonstrated some more by taking a bite. They nodded dubiously.

“You see, the miners would have poisonous arsenic on their hands from the tin, and so this bit they threw away.”

“Pasty iss poison?,” asked the young man, horrified.

“No no, you see . . . ” and I tried to explain again. But still they could not take in this historic gem and continued to stare at the pasties suspiciously as they sipped their coffees.

I put the finishing touches to my own welcome meal and just to further emphasise the point about the crimped pastry edge, I threw a remnant to a crow that had landed nearby looking for scraps.

My last sight of the couple, as I rumbled away with my luggage, was of them looking to the heavens open-mouthed.

I am convinced they expected the crow to come crashing down, stone dead from arsenic poisoning.

THE newly formed GIVING IT BACK fundraising group of Moraira and Teulada held their first event at the Marina in Moraira.

A Venetian Masquerade Gala Dinner raised more than €5,500 to help the children’s homes via the charity, Make a Smile.

Thanks to the generosity of all who attended and some amazing sponsors, including Villa Buigues who made a substantial donation, the evening was a great success.

U3A Marina Baixa Sunday Strollers ON a very hot evening members of the U3A Marina Baixa Sunday Strollers, set off from the car park in Xirles, through this delightful little village and into the nearby campo.

The evening was rounded off with cold refreshing drinks at the ‘Wooden Hut,’ between Polop and Xirles and even at 7pm, they needed the shade!!

Lions Club Summer concerts THE local veteran rock band Contraband put on a splendid performance on behalf of the Teulada - Moraira Lions at the seafront in Moraira.

A relatively small but enthusiastic crowd (World Cup season) enjoyed the band’s vast repertoire and joined in singing and dancing the night away. And to prove what great guys they are, the band even donated their fee to the charity!

The next summer concert to be staged by the Teulada - Moraira Lions will feature two great musicians that are very popular here on the north Costa Blanca.

This Sunday, Bella Luna, a local duo who are a great act covering popular music to suit all

tastes from the Gypsy Kings to Elvis and even Michael Jackson, plus many more will perform on behalf of the TM Lions club.

This will be a fun show and should have everyone up and dancing!

These free summer shows are situated on the seafront by the castle in Moraira and start at 8pm, there will be a bar which is run by the local festeros and the proceeds from this go to help fund the Moors and Christians festival.

The Lions present these shows free of charge, but donations are gratefully received.

Nicky Chapman, who also runs a jamming session in Alfaz del Pi

said: “This will be the third week at our new venue, we even ran over time last week because so many wanted to play or sing.”

Nicky started her jamming sessions in Alfaz del Pi three years ago, and it is now known as one of the best jam sessions on the Costa

Blanca.

She said: “It’s so nice when people come up to me and say how much they enjoyed the evening, it makes all my efforts worthwhile, with a lot of musicians coming to play before the go and do a gig elsewhere.”

Repair the damage with conditioner EVERY time we use a blow dryer or tongs, pull our hair into a tight ponytail or even brush it we’re putting extra stress on it and causing unwanted damage.

Then, to make things worse, damaged hair gets dry and rough which leads us on a vicious circle as we reach for the hot tools again to try and tame it.

While the experts tell us to always use a heat protector and apply a mask every week without fail, if we’re honest about it there are most probably times that really isn’t going to happen. Yet there is good news: with a religious daily conditioning routine, the worst can be kept in check at least temporarily.

reduce the amount of hair that accumulates in your home, by brushing your cat’s coat on a daily basis.

When the days get longer, female cats’ hormones are stimulated and they come into heat, getting pregnant as young as five to six months of age.

Male cats become fertile around the same time. It’s a good idea to get your cat spayed or neutered.

It helps to keep numbers down, reduces transmission of disease, and keeps them closer to home, rather than fighting in the streets.

The warmer weather encourages fleas, so it’s wise to protect your cat, even before the weather changes. The garden and outside areas can be dangerous to your cat, so make sure that fertilisers, pesticides and chemicals

are put away. If an area has been sprayed with t o x i c m a t e r i a l , t h e n i t ’s best to keep the cat away until it has lost its potency. Plants could also be a danger, including lilies, tulips, lily of the valley and azaleas.

Like humans, pets can also suffer with allergies, so look out for excessive scratching, hair loss and skin rashes. Vaccinations are also very important for your cat. If, in any doubt, always consult your vet, especially if they are displaying unusual behaviour.

o - ue root-changing verbs Basic Spanish for everyday needs

¡HOLA! First of all the answer to last week’s million dollar question (if only!) which was, if ‘lo siento’ means ‘I’m sorry,’ how do we say ‘We’re sorry’ in Spanish?

The answer is ‘lo sentimos,’ Let’s see, if ‘siento’ means ‘I feel’ and ‘lo siento’ which translates as ‘I’m sorry’ literally means ‘I feel it,’ then ‘we are sorry’ has to be the literal translation of ‘we feel it,’ ‘We feel’ is ‘sentimos’ with the ‘lo’ for ‘it’ in front, so that gives us: ‘lo sentimos.’ A better idea is to avoid doing anything that you jointly have to apologise for!

Today, we’re moving forward to our second most common category of rootchanging verbs, and that is ‘o to ue.’ I can hear your whoops of delight from here.

This is the second category of just three, so we’re making good progress.

Incidentally these root changes, which are of course actually based on sound changes, are repeated in all sorts of other word groups, and not just root-changing verbs. ‘O to ue’ is a particularly common sound change which occurs in a whole range of words, for example in numbers: ‘nueve’ and ‘noventa,’ and furniture words: ‘muebles’ (furniture) and ‘mobiliario’ (furniture shop).

Okay, back to the point. First of all we need to realise that everything we have learnt so far about root-changing verbs still applies. The endings are exactly the same as they are for standard verbs.

That means that the -ar, -er and -ir endings which we learnt a few weeks ago and repeated quite a lot, remain exactly the same for all our root-changing verbs.

These ending changes are what give us the information about ‘who’ and ‘when’ an action is performed, so they can’t really be tampered with (not that we’re tampering with verbs, but you know what I mean).

The other principle that remains exactly the same concerns which forms change at the root and which do not. Here is the rule again, set in stone: first, second and third persons singular and third person plural make the root change, whereas first and second persons plural do not.

This is to do with where the beat falls on the word, for all the reasons already given in previous articles.

So, given all those reminders, if I were to write a few examples of ‘o-ue’ root changing verbs, you really ought to be able to work them out for yourselves! However, I’m not quite that cruel, so here are some I did earlier, in fact one each of the -ar, -er and -ir groups of verbs.

FOR the first time in 21 years, Toyota has undertaken a full redesign of the Century, its exclusive, hand-crafted limousine.

Modern styling cues are combined with a traditional, dignified look that references Century’s heritage, while the cabin is equipped for VIP rear seat passengers to be chauffeur-driven in complete comfort. New Nissan model to make Europe debut NISSAN and Italdesign have created a new prototype vehicle - the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign - in their first-ever collaboration.

Based on a production 2018 Nissan GT-R NISMO model, the unique car commemorates the 50th anniversaries of both the GT-R and Italdesign and will make its debut in Europe this month.

ACCORDING to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), UK car manufacturing production rose in May, with volumes growing 1.3 per cent year-on-year. A total of 137,225 cars were built in British factories, following a marked decline in the same month last year when several plants adjusted production schedules to prepare for a raft of new and updated models.

Manufacturing for domestic buyers grew by 12.8 per cent, reversing a decline of equal proportion in the same month in 2017, when the market was also still feeling the effects of VED reform. Meanwhile, production for export dipped by 1.5 per cent, with 107,307 cars destined for overseas markets and making up 78.2 per cent of UK automotive production. In the year-to-date, output stands at 705,603 units, down 2.9 per cent year-on-year.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said: “Following the significant decline in output in May last year, as several manufacturers geared up to deliver new models growth this month was to be expected. For this to continue, we need to ensure UK car plants are able to attract future investment, and this will depend upon maintaining the competitive conditions that have helped drive the industry’s success in recent years.

“Given our dependency on the EU as our biggest customer and supplier, that means retaining the benefits of the single market and membership of the customs union - the minimum requirement for frictionless trade.”

sport JGBC hosts Spanish team training camp

ONCE again, Javea Green Bowling Club has hosted a two-day training camp for the Spanish National Team.

Next week the Spanish Squad travel to Cardiff, Wales to play against the USA, Australia, South Africa and others in preparation for the ‘Atlantic Rim Tournament’ in 2019.

All the disciplines were played, Ladies and Gents Singles, Pairs, Triples and Rinks. So how did the Spanish Team fare against the northern Costa Blanca teams, comprising players from BBC, El Cid and JGBC? Every volunteer player from JGBC was given a game and the thrill of going up against the National side.

On the Saturday morning matches the Spanish Squad prevailed by five games to three. Saturday afternoon they won seven games to one. Sunday morning was a repeat score of seven games to one and in the afternoon they won again by six games to two.

Adding that lot up means Spain won by a superb 25 games to seven, which must have pleased their Manager, Graham Cathcart who stated that he was impressed and pleased with the quality of the greens and the facilities provided at Javea Green.

Copa D’Escocia Competition at Oliva Nova ON a beautiful morning, where the temperature soared to 35 degrees centigrade, 34 brave members and guests took to the fairways, to battle out for this prestigious trophy.

The Balls in the Water prize was guessed and that was by Paul Sankey who guessed correct with exactly 100 balls.

In the match Play Competition, Terry Moore defeated John Nicol by 6 and 5.

Padel in La Nucia

Announcing the tournament.

THE Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano in La Nucia will host the second scoring round of the III Padel Circuit of the Atlético de Madrid today until Sunday.

It is a circuit that has six categories: three for male, two for female and one mixed.

Matches will be played on the 12 crystal padel courts of #LaNuciaCiudadDelDeporte, and is the second scoring round of this ‘colchonero circuit,’ whose only matches in the Valencian Community will be held in La Nucía.

This competition is organised by the Atlético de Madrid Foundation in collaboration with Padel Point La Nucía and the Department of Sports.
