FIREFIGHTERS based in Almoradi were called to rescue a three-year-old boy who had been trapped inside a car in Calle Geranio de Almoradi.

Events unfolded after the young boy and his parents left their house and the toddler managed to get into their car. As he shut the door behind him, his distraught parents realised their son was locked inside with the car and house keys with him.

In the ensuing panic, the emergency services were called to free the boy who were about to break the rear window of the car when his father recalled there was a spare car key in the house. The firefighters instead gained entry to get the key without causing any damage to the property... and freed the boy.

by Darren Parmenter THE ‘Strength for Nigel’ Facebook page was jampacked full of good wishes and crossed fingers throughout the day on Wednesday as 10-year-old Nigel Watson was undergoing surgery in a Pamplona Hospital.

Nigel, from Urbanisation La Marina, was diagnosed a few months ago with a rare tumour that has affected his brain stem.

Originally, it was believed that the very expensive treatment for such conditions was only available in the USA, but Nigel’s determined family and friends rallied around and after a chance meeting at a local event discovered a clinic in Pamplona that could potentially be the

IN my previous working life, I spent a great deal of time travelling around the world meeting with different government officials and heads of state.

In that time, I really only came across the use of bodyguards on three distinct occasions (although there may have been others that I wasn’t aware of).

When I made my first visit to Liberia in the early 1980’s, myself and a colleague were given a bodyguard for the duration of our trip. Dressed completely in black with a red beret and silver plated revolver on his hip and pepper spray in his top pocket, he explained to us that he had ‘juju’ which meant that bullets would bounce off him.

At one stage, we were invited to lunch with the Minister of Telecommunication and a member of the People’s Redemption Council who brought his machine gun toting bodyguard with him so the two of them paced backwards and forwards as we

A few years later, I entertained the first President of the newly independent Federated States of Micronesia, Tosiwo Nakayama to dinner at the top of one of the largest buildings in Chicago and we had to reserve an extra table with a clear line of sight for his bodyguard who had a very noticeable bulge under his jacket.

The third occasion was on the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands War when we entertained Baroness Thatcher, Sir Rex Hunt (Governor of Falkland Islands at the time of the invasion), his wife Lady Mavis and the Administrator of Ascension Island.

We took over the restaurant which was part of a country pub

and again had to arrange a second table for the former Prime Minister’s personal secretary and police bodyguard (who didn’t appear to have a bulge under his jacket) who in actual fact was more like a ‘nanny’ as she was by that time a little forgetful.

There was some consternation when she decided that she needed to go to the toilet which was in the relatively crowded bar next door and the looks on the faces of some of the regulars as ‘Mrs T’ wandered into the bar was quite amusing.

All of this does have a reason behind it and that is that on the Costa del Sol in particular, there are people who do regularly employ bodyguards or security personnel to protect themselves or their property.

These are celebrities, wealthy business people or in some cases those who need protection for ‘other’ reasons so they hire the services of different people.

There is now an official association for registered and ‘legal’ private security companies, APROSAR and this is because

there are some major problems that we mere mortals may not be aware of.

In the past four years, it is estimated by the association that 600 individuals have been fined for being ‘unofficial and unqualified’ bodyguards and in truth many of them are British or Irish but they are not the main problem.

In Spain, when people approach retirement age, they are often still on the books but aren’t required to work on a full time basis which means that they have plenty of free time in which to find additional employment.

This is true of different police authorities and I understand that officers are allowed to keep both their identification papers and their firearms until such time as they finally retire.

The problem is of course that in the event of a break in or attack, there is anecdotal evidence of those bodyguards leaving because if they stay to protect their charges and other police officers are called, then they may well be charged with inappropriate activity.

The moral of the story is, if you are so unpopular that you need protection, make sure that you go to a recognised security company with fully trained staff who won’t either ‘do a runner’ or sell you to the highest bidder.

Ex-PM spotted in Santa Pola

by Darren Parmenter FORMER prime minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, has been seen in the Costa Blanca resort of Santa Pola.

It is understood he has returned to the town again as he may wish to return to his old position in the Land Registry Organisation where he was previously employed.

Not only has Rajoy lost his job as prime minister after losing a vote of

no-confidence in the Spanish Parliament only two weeks ago, he has also resigned as leader of the Partido Popular (PP) and as an MP. According to the Spanish media, Rajoy arrived in Alicante just on Tuesday on a fast AVE train from Madrid and he will remain in the locality until the following afternoon.

Rajoy’s presence did not go unnoticed by a number of local people as social media networks were quickly full of sightings.

La Manga drivers to wait longer RESIDENTS and visitors to La Manga are going to have to endure traffic jams for another summer season.

Plans to ease the congestion in the popular tourist zone which were being considered, that included new bus routes, a shuttle service with La Manga, and an improvement in various road layouts have been put on hold.

A further €19 million is being invested in La Manga from European and regional funding sources over the coming years.

SKIN CANCER PREVENTION DAY was recently celebrated, and the Murcia region health authority took the opportunity of reminding people of the dangers and how to self-check for possible cases.

Every year, around 160 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Murcia that results in the deaths of 29 people. However, early detection and treatment of this type of cancer are resulting in higher rates of cure.

The advice from the Ministry of Health recommends periodic self-examination of moles and any suspicious marks on the skin and if in doubt to immediately visit their doc-

tor to enable an early diagnosis and follow-up treatment if required.

The rare malignant melanomas are responsible for the majority of deaths that occur in the Murcia region on an annual basis, representing 4 per cent of all cancers in women and 2 per c e n t i n m e n . H o w e v e r, s i n c e t h e numbers were being monitored, the cases have more than tripled during the last three decades.

Comparing the period 1983 to 1987 with 2007 to 2009, it found that cases in women have gone from 3.1 to 10.9 per 100,000 of the population, and in men from 2.7 to 9.5 per 100,000.

AHEAD of the planned opening towards the end of this year, a number of tests are being carried out at the new Corvera Airport in the Murcia region.

Several checks of radio and navigation systems have taken place under the control of Spanish airports authority AENA, to ensure that all work perfectly in accordance with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The tests, undertaken in a Beechcraft King Air 350, took a total of 27 hours flying to satisfy the safety and technical criteria.

These tests took place at the same time passenger figures from the soon-to-be-closed Murcia-San Javier Airport have shown an increase of 10.4 per cent for the period January to May 2018.

During that time, 422,358 people passed through the facilities which will be closing when Corvera assumes the flight traffic.

A sign was placed on the outside of the building in Spanish and English stating the office will be closed due to the lack of someone to man it, apologising for the inconvenience.

The message was put up by the Councillor for Tourism, Sofial Alvarez, who told the Spanish media she was angry that she has been forced to close the facility, especially as many thousands of tourists are about to arrive in the area around Orihuela Costa.

It will remain closed until a decision is made to employ someone to run the office.

British man arrested for arson C O L L A B O R AT I O N b e t w e e n t h e Guardia Civil in Murcia and Local Police in San Javier resulted in the tracking down and subsequent arrest of a 78-year-old British man suspected of being an arsonist.

When he was detained, the officers discovered and seized a five-litre bottle of petrol, matches and

several lighters.

The arrest of the man, who is understood to have a holiday home in the area and returns to the UK for the winter, is connected to four forest fires that occurred last summer in the area of Puerto Mayor, located in La Manga del Mar Menor-San Javier.

San Javier pilots’ tragic find THE body of a pilot who had been flying a firefighting aircraft has been found after his plane crashed in Mallorca.

The dead pilot named in Spanish media as 46-year-old Antoni Alfaro - was based in the Balearic Islands and was found following a major search operation that involved pilots based in San Javier, Murcia. Not only did they find the plane in about 60 metres of water, they located the body that had been missing for three days.

Forest firefighter numbers up to 700 DECISONS taken at both provincial and regional levels of government mean that around 700 troops will be allocated this summer to help fight forest fires.

Alicante and Valencian governments have added 116 new firefighters to the already 600-strong dedicated force that are strategically located in 12 brigades across the Alicante Province, in its own fight at combating the high risk of fires due to the already excess growth of vegetation.

THE Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion, on behalf of District North (Spain), are immensely grateful to the Dean of Orihuela Cathedral for allowing a celebration of Armed Forces Day by holding a service in the 13th century Orihuela Cathedral.

The service, which will take place at 5.30pm on June 30, will be conducted by the President of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion, Pastor Keith Brown.

It will be preceded at 5.15pm by a parade and short march led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums and four Chelsea pensioners from the Royal Hospital.

As well as representation from the RBL, we also hope to see a large number of serving members and veterans of the Spanish Armed Forces and of the Spanish Security Services, the National Police, Guardia Civil and the Local Police.

Poor air quality in Murcia ACCORDING to a report from Ecologists in Action (EIA), parts of the Murcia region are among the worst in Spain when it comes to air pollution.

The annual air quality studies from the EIA took data from 800 measuring stations in 127 areas o f t h e c o u n t r y, a n d for the first time a total of 28 in Murcia were among the most polluted communities.

In addition to Murcia, the report shows the most polluted provinces are Andalucia, Asturias, Cataluña, Galicia, Community of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha and Canary Islands, with the cities of Alicante and Cartagena highlight-

ed among the details.

The EIA study also revealed that 97 per cent of the Spanish population in 88 per cent of the country’s territory were exposed in 2017 to contamination levels higher than those recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Commenting on the findings in the Spanish media, EIA noted that the high temperatures and prolonged drought conditions last year certainly contributed to the increase in pollution levels.

The rise is also ‘blamed’ on the revival of the Spanish economy, stating that there has been a greater consumption on fossil fuels as a result.

CRUZ AZUL Murcia advocates Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) campaigns as the humane way to control cat colonies in the Murcia region, providing information, equipment and support to local communities and urbanisations.

Denise Standen and Patricia Giller bear testimony to the success of TNR in Sucina. They started in 2015, when their first two kittens turned up. They had no idea where they had come from, but could do nothing more than feed them. Within a few months, they had produced three kittens each and so they sought help from Cruz Azul, who lent them special traps and explained the process. They managed to catch the two mums, who were neutered and returned to the colony; they followed suit with the kittens when they were old enough During this time, others arrived on their doorstep and joined the group.

With the help and support of neighbours and Cruz Azul, all of the cats were neutered. They now have 11 cats on the urbanisation, who are living happily and in good health.

Surprise for Local Police LOCAL POLICE based in El Altet - close to Alicante-Elche Airport - have accidentally found a stolen car after intervening during an argument between two people in the vehicle.

But as they searched the Mercedes, they found 350 grams of cannabis in the vehicle. So, what started off as a suspected domestic argument ended up with the two being charged with car theft and alleged drug trafficking offences.

Double trouble for disco FIRST a Crevillent disco felt the wrath of feminists with a poster for a Mea Culpa fiesta.

Then it found itself in the town hall’s bad books following claims that it admitted under-18s who were seen smoking and drinking there.

The event promised free drinks for girls, with a poster headed Mea Culpa! that showed a girl sitting on a loo and swigging out of a bottle. The advertisement warned that if one girl went outside or to the ladies then the offer would be called off and it would be her fault.

Mea Culpa events are held nationwide, but Crevillent’s Asociacion Feminista Isabel Alfonso reported the poster to the Equality ministry’s Women’s Monitoring service.

The poster was amended to refer to boys as well as girls but the disco’s problems did not end there.

When it opened last March, Crevillent Town Hall ordered its closure for safety reasons but after the owners went to court, an Elche judge gave the disco permission to reopen as a temporary measure although she must still give a definitive judgement.

Meanwhile Social Services’ Children’s section made public a Local Police report with images that showed under-age adolescents smoking and drinking during an afternoon fiesta and which the young people themselves had uploaded to the social media.

Discotheque sources said that all its permits were in order but complained that police were constantly visiting the premises, looking for breaches in regulations.

CAMPAIGN: Thousands of local children in early learning scheme.

Children learn about the ‘five-a-day’ MORE than 15,200 students from a total of 54 schools from the Vega Baja region are about to participate in a campaign that encourages them to eat more fruit and vegetables.

The project is aimed at nursery and primary school aged children and is being carried out throughout the Valencian Community.

Part of the scheme will see a selection of local produce handed out to the children; while at the same time learn about the history and health benefits of them.

Among the planned list of activities are 69 workshops which will teach

pupils about the seasonal variations of fruit and vegetables, the variety of colours, smell, taste, shape and even the proper way to consume it.

They will also be taught the different names of the produce in Spanish, Valencian and English.

The programme is financed by a combination of the European Union, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, with the main purpose of the project to educate children from the earliest possible age.

by Glenn Scott ACCORDING to a report in the Spanish media, the country’s new PSOE government is in the process of working on a Royal Decree that will once again make healthcare free for everyone living in Spain, even if they are here illegally.

The previous PP government of Mariano Rajoy, which fell just two weeks ago, stopped healthcare for anyone who wasn’t in the country legally - except for accident and emergency treatment - back in 2012, although not all hospitals operated under the same criteria.

A significant number of doctors across the country denounced those measures as ‘cruel’ and continued to treat anyone who came into their surgeries.

One of the most vociferous against the decision was from within the Valencian community whose newly-elected PSOE government publicly announced in 2015 that “healthcare would be available free to anyone who needed it”, although they were subsequently ordered by the courts to follow the rules set from central government.

If the rules do change again, it will take about six weeks for them to be fully implemented.

Authors of the Italian jobs caught ACROSS both the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, officers from the Guardia Civil have dismantled a criminal network believed to be behind cars stolen in Italy and sold online.

A total of seven people, between the ages of 28 and 56 and of Spanish, Romanian and Moldovan nationalities, were arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicles, fraud and the falsification of documentation. Three of the detained were caught in Alicante.

The group’s ‘modus operandi’ was always the same as they began by stealing cars from the street in Italy.

Once taken, the original chassis number was changed for one from an Italian car of the same make and model. They then faked the car’s log book and the bill of sale.

The cars ended up for sale in Spain where any trace of the original vehicle would be lost after passing through the traffic departments in Alicante, Albacete and Madrid.

The amount of money lost by the buyers of the ‘fake cars’ is estimated to be around €190,000.

BACK in December the JB Brass Band, in association with Avalon Funeral Services and a group headed

by Roger Trout who runs an art school, donated money to the Apne School for children and young adults with learning difficulties, in Torrevieja.

Thieves broke into their building and stole all manner of things important to the development of the children and adults placed there.

On hearing about this the groups decided to cover the €2,000 lost, to hopefully go some way to rectify this awful act.

After a difficult start to the year, due to personal tragedies and illnesses, the Band is finally up to full strength and decided to do more good in the area. With time short, two concerts were arranged.

“OH, here we go again,” I thought when I received an email from the Peter Tatchell Foundation last week saying that Tatchell, 66, the London-based human rights activist, had been arrested in Moscow for holding a one-man protest against homophobia on the first day of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. I was angry but not surprised.

Neither, I’m guessing, was Tatchell. After all, he had been arrested twice before for protesting in Moscow and suffered brain damage after being attacked by Russian neo-Nazis in 2007.

On this occasion, Tatchell stood with a banner supporting gay men who have been violently targeted in a purge in Chechnya.

He was released after almost two hours, and told to appear at a court hearing on June 26.

Tatchell said: “Getting arrested is standard for Russians who protest for LGBT+ rights… President Putin has failed to condemn and act against the homophobic witch-hunts in Chechnya, which have seen scores of LGBT+ peo-

His arrest was quickly followed by a warning issued by the UK Foreign Office to Britons visiting Russia which, in effect, bluntly stated: “Don’t do anything to annoy the authorities who have banned all protests of any size during the World Cup.” Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK’s Director, said: “The response to Peter Tatchell’s protest is straight out of the Russian authorities’ playbook, protest in a high-profile location like Red Square, hold a placard criticising Putin or speak in support of LGBTI rights in public, and face immediate arrest by the police.

“In present-day Russia, there’s

no right to peacefully protest, no right to publicly stand up for LGBTI people, and certainly no chance of staging a street protest about last year’s sinister gay crackdown in Chechnya.”

This begs the question: why on earth did FIFA choose Russia to host the World Cup? Back in 2014, when the World Cup was hosted by Brazil, FIFA issued this statement: “Today we strive not only for victory in the game, but for the victory of peace; for mutual respect, regardless of gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion or class. These are the values and aspirations of FIFA, the wider world of sport and people everywhere. We pledge to do our utmost to achieve global peace

and a life of dignity for all.”

But these are certainly not the values of Putin and his thugs, nor are they the values of Qatar, which will host the next World Cup. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, which also stands accused by Amnesty International of exploiting migrants from Bangladesh, India and Nepal brought in to refurbish the Khalifa Stadium. Some are being subjected to forced labour.

Said AI under the headline Qatar World Cup of Shame: “They [the migrants] can’t change jobs, they can’t leave the country and they often wait months to get paid. Meanwhile, FIFA, its sponsors and the construction companies involved are

set to make massive financial gains from the tournament.”

What really riles me is that FIFA has sponsorship deals with many international corporations that are happy to support Gay Pride events in liberal democracies, but remain silent when events take place in countries known for despicable human rights violations.

A few of them made all the right noises when asked to comment on the World Cup being hosted by Russia and Qatar. Coca Cola, for example, said: “We believe that through our partnership and continued involvement with FIFA we can help foster optimism and unity, while making a positive difference in the communities we serve. The Coca-Cola company strives for diversity, inclusion and equality in our business, and we support these rights throughout society as well.”

Yeah, sure you do. But fine words butter no parsnips. The only way people will take such statements seriously is when corporations flat-out refuse to support events in countries which hold human rights in absolute contempt.

For the record I DETEST football, and applaud Tatchell’s courageous stand.

by Darren Parmenter ALICANTE’S famous bonfires (Hogueras) held around this time every year are celebrating their 90th anniversary and continue to attract visitors with the much-needed and appreciated boost it brings to the local economy.

Coinciding with the longest day of the year, the 2018 Hogueras got underway yesterday (Thursday) and lasts until Sunday and is expected to see more than €100 million spent over the four days.

What will no doubt help for this year is the fact that the main celebrations fall at the weekend, and as such Alicante will see more than a million people in the city enjoy a full programme of events that can be found around every corner.

The economic impact

IMPACT: Alicante’s Hogueras set to bring millions of euros over four days. on the city is calculated by the University of Alicante, who believe that each visitor spends on average €100.

The hotel, bars and restaurant trade expect a windfall of about €70 million with the remaining €30 million in shopping, transport and other sectors that directly benefit from the Hogueras.

According to a report in the Spanish media, the

Alicante City Council see the investment of a relatively small amount of €4 million to help stage the Hogueras as being worthwhile when the returns are taken into account.

Hotel occupancy during the week, according to the Provincial Hotel Association, is expected to be around 80 per cent for Alicante with more than 3,100 rooms available in the city’s 34 hotels.

Naval ‘disaster’ training day A MAJOR exercise undertaken by the Spanish Navy is due to take place off the coast of Cartagena in the coming weeks, and military spotters will be in for a treat as there will be more ships and submarines in the area than normal.

The operation is taking place between next Tuesday and Friday June 29, and will see a variety of sea vessels, backed up with air support, who will be engaged in a search and rescue exercise after a submarine has ‘sunk’ with all its crew trapped on board.

The operation will test the reaction to the alarm being raised through to the rescue of the survivors and recovery of the submarine.

Song and dance over closed theatre TORREVIEJA is preparing to take legal action against the architect Antonio Marqueria Tamayo.

He directed Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre project but has never signed off the fin-

ished complex, which was built 12 years ago.

Meanwhile the theatre and its offices were closed by the Generalitat in September 2015 because they lacked a Municipal Opening

MORE than 1,060 people sat the second round of nautical theory exams in Cartagena on Sunday with the figure the highest on record and the number of applicants up from 866 last year according to data.

Licence and it is now up to Marquerie to regulate the situation by signing off the construction’s Works Completion Certificate.

The architect has always refused to issue the certificate, claiming that on inspecting the building at the end of 2017 he found modifications to the building that were not present in the original project or when the theatre first opened to the public.

All councillors involved in the project or the running of

the theatre since it opened maintain that the modifications that Marquerie claims to have seen do not exist and there is nothing to stop him from signing the Works Completion Certificate.

The architect has also put in a bill for €150,000 although the town hall and Acciona, the company contracted to build the complex, both insist that Marquerie received all sums agreed in his contract and there is nothing outstanding.

Unhappy choice of language A SANTA POLA mother’s complaints against the Generalitat’s plurilingual plans have reached Valencia’s Upper Court of Justice.

Victoria Montolla’s child attends the Vicenta Ruso state school in Santa Pola’s Gran Alacant neighbourhood where there will no longer be separate streams for Valenciano and Spanish for Infants and the first two years of Primary education.

As the School Council could not agree on what percentage of classes should be taught in Spanish, Valenciano or English, the regional government applied its default position of 43 per cent in Valenciano, 42 per cent in

Spanish and 15 per cent in English.

Montolla, whose child has until now been taught entirely in Valenciano maintained that the change would adversely affect her son. “His standard in this language will go down and he will have to do subjects like maths in Spanish,” she said.

She was not alone in questioning the new scheme. “What will happen with Primary pupils from the third year onwards,” asked Ramon Lopez, president of the Alicante province Federation of Parents’ Associations (FAPA).

“Are they going to apply two sets of rules in the same school?”

Don’t let the doggy do anymore GUARDAMAR Town Council has launched a campaign aimed at getting more dog owners to be responsible for cleaning up after their pets.

Councillor Silvestre Garcia presented the initiative that will see owners given a grand total of 2,000 packets containing two boxes of ‘doggy bags.’ This will accompany over 1,500 one litre plastic bottles of a special chlorinated cleansing liquid that can be poured over the areas where the dogs do their business after it’s been picked up.

The measure has been brought in after the town hall received a number of complaints from residents about the amount of dog excrement and urine proliferating public spaces in Guardamar del Segura.

Fiesta bonfire ban for Torrevieja’s beaches JUST three days before they are due to take place, Torrevieja’s councillor with responsibility for the municipality’s beaches, Javier Manzanares, has reportedly announced that the council has decided not to allow any bonfires on the beaches during the popular Hogueras fiestas.

The decision has been taken to safeguard the areas before the arrival of the influx of tourists. The councillor said that the beaches are left ‘in a sorry state’ each year which sees thousands of screws and nails left in the sand from pallets and other wooden items used in the bonfires.

Extra police will be on duty to monitor anyone who attempts to build bonfires, and any materials will be confiscated.

It has become a tradition for a number of municipalities in the Alicante Province to celebrate the San Juan fiestas in June - this includes families and friends having parties and building bonfires on the beaches, which they then jump over at midnight.

CLARO reacts to ‘incompetence’

by Glenn Scott THE announcement that the sorely needed Emergency Services Centre in Orihuela Costa was to be further delayed was met with disbelief and indignation by residents on the coast. That was the initial reaction contained in a press release from local political party CLARO. They also go on to say that 10 years after the construction work began, and eight since the building stopped due to the company going bankrupt, ‘the highly visible rusting skeleton’ has been a constant reminder of incompetence and indifference to the needs of Orihuela Costa.

“It is all the more shocking since it was only two weeks ago that a petition signed by over 2,200 people was presented to the Valencian and Orihuela authorities, claiming the urgency of completing the project after the tragic death of a young boy on La Zenia beach and the delay of some 40 minutes in the arrival of an adequately equipped ambulance,” said CLARO. CLARO insist that the main blame rests with successive local government administrations in Orihuela who have failed to give sufficient importance and priority to this vital project which Orihuela Costa needs to meet the security requirements of a population equal to that of the city and many times greater in peak tourist periods.”

They also accept that a lack of voters in local municipal elections is part of the problem.

ORGANISED by David and Lorraine Whitney, the latest fundraising evening in aid of the Reach Out Shop 2 was a resounding success.

A Hollywood-themed night at the Marina Bar in Torrevieja which featured a delicious two-course meal, movie quiz, Oscar ceremony and a fabulous raffle that included a special cake raffle courtesy of Bev Jones, was attended by a number of volunteers and managers of the Reach Out charity.

The entertainment for the evening was supplied by Rees, who provided his usual slick performance and repertoire of song that was fully appreciated by a full house of supporters.

The highlight of the evening was the sudden and surprise appearance of four male strippers who ended up down to their underwear as Rees sang You Can Leave Your Hat On... the famous song from The Full Monty!

As usual Rita, Dave and their team ran the bar and worked so hard throughout the evening to make the event both a success and memorable... at least for four reasons!

M o s t i m p o r t a n t l y, a t o t a l o f € 8 0 6 . 6 6 w a s raised for the Reach Out charity.

David and Lorraine want to thank everyone that made this event one to remember, and at the same time wondering how they can top it.

The circus comes to town TORREVIEJA’S Councillor for Culture, Domingo Perez, has presented full details of the ‘HOP’ Circus due to be held over the long weekend of Friday June 29 to Sunday July 1 (inclusive).

Accompanied by the circus’ producer Emmanuel Vizcaino, Councillor Perez said the spectacular is aimed at all ages and ‘in taking culture to the streets of Torrevieja is offering the city a quality and free event.’

Vixcaino explained the three-day programme will consist of eight circus performances carried out by different companies from across Spain; four of which have been recognised and indeed have won prizes at important international festivals. In addition, there will be a free circus workshop for children All of the performances will be held during the evening, with Friday’s beginning at 8pm, Saturday’s at 6pm and the final day, Sunday, starting at 7.30pm.

The events will take place in the centre of Torrevieja around Paseo Juan Aparicio, with Saturday’s performances ending up in front of

Emerald Wedding Anniversary PASTOR BRYAN and Mrs Joy Lowry happily celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary at home with friends.

They were married in the early 60’s in Newcastle and have three children and two grandchildren.

A reader observes FOR around seven years I have been a regular reader of RTN. During this time I

have learned to avoid reading the articles of some of your regular contributors, but as I

believe in ‘free speech,’ I would never dream of complaining.

by Barry Duke in the May 18 - 24, 2018 issue was exceptional in the pure hatred that he spouted against people like myself.

His article was entitled ‘DONALD DUCK’ and it was a scathing attack on the democratically elected president of the USA, a nation that came to the rescue of the United Kingdom and Europe on two separate occasions during the 20th century.

Whether you agree w i t h D o n a l d Tr u m p o r not, he is the first President of the USA for many years who has at least tried to keep the promises he made to the electorate who elected him.

However, the reason

for my letter is not about Donald Trump, the reason for my letter concerns what Barry Duke has said about some of the American supporters of the Republican President.

He claims that these supporters are mainly ‘white evangelical Christians.’

He then goes on to call them ‘halfwits who trumpet their intolerance.’

If that was not enough, he then calls these same ‘white evangelical Christians’ ‘God besotted maggots’ who spread their ‘toxic messages of hate’ aimed at feminists, the LGBT c o m m u n i t y, M u s l i m s , Jews, atheists and all others who don’t share their ‘Christian’ values.

Lastly, he calls these same ‘white evangelical Christians’ ‘wicked im-

beciles.’

Now as a ‘white evangelical Christian’ myself and representing an ‘evangelical congregation’ here in Benidorm I cannot just sit back and say nothing.

The words spoken by Barry Duke are very offensive to all ‘evangelical Christians’ be they white, black, or any other colour.

In addition, Christian believers have never been guilty of spreading hate because the one that we follow always preached a message of love for all people.

However, the Lord Jesus also preached a message of repentance.

The Bible clearly reveals that ‘all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ and as a result men and women need to come in repentance and trust in

the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour.

God loved people like Barry Duke and myself so much that he left heaven’s glory and died on the Cross of Calvary for both of us.

Yo u m a y c a l l m e a wicked imbecile if you like Barry, but your only hope is in Jesus Christ the Saviour of us ‘Evangelical Christians.’

AS a way of encouraging even more visitors to attend the Alicante Hogueras over the next few days, a number of the local TRAM railway stations have increased the number of free car parking spaces available.

TRAM will offer 200 free spaces at its stations in Alicante, and in addition a further 164 for cars and 34 for motorbikes spread around three council-run parking areas close to the train stations in a number of other nearby municipalities.

INITIATIVE: Over 200 additional parking spaces along the TRAM route.

With more than 300 streets closed in the city centre during the Hogueras festivities, traffic jams and park-

ing issues are inevitable and so the more drivers that can park up and go to the nearest bonfires by taking the TRAM can only make the experience less stressful.

This initiative backs up the recently announced 24-hour TRAM service that will operate during the Alicante Hogueras to attract visitors served by the trains between Alicante and Benidorm... and then on to Denia. Extra parking spaces are also available at Calpe, Benissa and Teulada stations.

‘Sarfend’ people to land in Alicante POPULAR Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has announced it will start a service linking Alicante-Elche Airport with London-Southend Airport. Although technically some miles out of London, Southend is still classed as a London airport and will be flying in and out of the Costa Blanca five-times weekly as from April 2019. It’s also closer for many people living in that part of the UK who until now have had to use Gatwick and Stansted.

In addition they will introduce two weekly flights from London-Southend to Reus (Tar-

ragona), five to Malaga and four to Palma.

Ryanair now carries upwards of 131 million passengers a year, making it the most used of the handful of low-cost airlines. It operates more than 2,000 daily flights connecting more than 220 destinations in 37 countries.

Currently flying a fleet of 430 Boeing-737 aircraft, it has an order for an additional 240 with the aim of further reducing its fares and at the same time increase passenger numbers to an estimated 200 million annually by the year 2024.

Over-50s unaware of Inheritance Tax risks RECENT research by leading independent insurance broker and financial planner Alan Boswell Group has found that fewer than 30 per cent of over-50s in the UK understand key Inheritance Tax terminology.

The findings showed that only 27 per cent of respondents were able to correctly identify that ‘nil-rate band’ referred to the threshold at which an estate became liable to inheritance tax and that this threshold is set at £325,000.

This is in addition to only 44 per cent being aware that the current rate of IHT was 40 per cent. The data comes following a survey into public awareness of IHT, which was launched when the government an-

nounced record IHT receipts of £5.2bn in the year to May 2017.

The Norwich-based company has growing concerns because increasing property prices are pushing many more estates over the £325,000 threshold (a figure that has been frozen since 2010, although UK house prices have increased by 33 per cent on average in that time) incurring tax at a rate of 40 per cent on sums that exceed the threshold.

pass on less to their heirs than they were expecting.”

Are you getting enough state pension?

ACCORDING to a report in the Financial Times, it’s estimated that tens of thousands of people are receiving the wrong amount of state pension, with some about to face the shock of having their weekly payments cut. However, a number of pensioners aren’t getting enough and will

receive an increased amount.

The findings come as a result of a big and ongoing ‘clean-up’ of large amounts of pension information which found a number of mistakes in people’s work records that s t r e t c h b a c k m a n y, m a n y years.

The government has con-

firmed that people that have received too much state pension will not be forced to repay the extra, but they will face drops in their payments in the future unless they win any appeal against the decision. Those affected are in the process of being informed on an individual basis.

On the other hand, retired people who have been underpaid previously will get the back pay in addition to future increases, but no interest on the ‘missing’ amounts.

Former Pensions Minister Steve Webb, who now works for Royal London said: “The

D e p a r t m e n t f o r Wo r k a n d Pensions needs to make sure that anyone who has been underpaid is notified as soon as possible, is paid straight away the new rate of pension, and receives an automatic lump sum of past underpayments including interest.”

MY touch down at Stansted was late and I arrived at the hotel within the airport precinct a little after midnight.

This is my preferred stop-over whenever I am in the UK, but I had never encountered a bloke in pyjamas in a queen-sized bed greeting me in the foyer before.

Were they full up and was this the only space available for guests? Or, as it turned out, simply a marketing ploy that emphasised the hotel’s proud boast: ‘a good night’s sleep guaranteed.’

“Good evening sir,” said the jim-jam clad snoozer as I made my way to the check-in machines. “Sweet dreams,” I responded, a little nonplussed.

This was the first time I had checked in online and three of the four machines were occupied by passengers who had alighted the shuttle before me. I gazed at screen number four that simply said ‘hello,’ and despite saying hello back, the greeting remained the same.

The lady on number three moved off so I sidled over and bingo, there were the instructions on screen. Typically machine number four had been the duff one.

I followed instructions; shoved in a couple of credit cards before one was accept-

“Have a good night” shouted the grinning head on the pillow as I grabbed my bags and made my way to the lifts, where I waved my bit of paper in front of the box

to activate lift number one.

Nothing happened, so I struggled up two flights of stairs; negotiated a couple of long corridors with my weighty luggage in tow, and arrived at my room only to find a conventional key-card lock.

Puzzling.

I waved my receipt in front of the box; up and down and from side to side, but the

door remained firmly locked. I’m embarrassed to admit that I even tried to insert the damn thing into the slot at the top, but it was like trying to play snooker with a rope, Grabbing my bags (never leave your bags unattended, not even in a deserted hotel corridor) I strode back to the lifts, which because they were now descending, no longer needed the security scan.

En route to reception, I glanced over and lo and behold, there was a key card in the chute of machine number three.

Grabbing it and ignoring the now irritating “Have a good night” I returned to the lifts, swiped my new card, and was duly beamed up.

Another trek to my blessed door where I inserted the ‘proper’ key card but nothing.

I turned it around and upside down, but still no little green light.

Now I was mad.

With an expletive or two, I grabbed my bags and retraced my steps.

I stomped across the foyer giving an audible growl in response to the predictable “Good evening sir”, and explained the situation to the receptionist.

“No problem”, he assured me, “I’ll just re-configure it” and I was sent off, thankfully for the final time, to get my guaranteed good night’s sleep.

It was 12.50; I was tired, hungry and dying for a pee. Then “Have a good nigh . . .” SHADDUP!

Age Concer n Summer Fair LAST Saturday Age Concern held their annual Summer Fair at their centre in La Siesta this 20th anniversary year fair raised €2,700.

People of all ages visited and strolled around the car park and grounds browsing the many stalls selling clothes, jewellery, plants, bric-a-brac, cakes, electrical items and mobility aids.

Resting under shady umbrellas they enjoyed a welcome drink and delicious home-made scones and watched a fabulous display of Morris Dancing and the Alpengold Oompah Band play a selection of songs.

Inside the centre there were many fundraising opportunities for visitors to win a whole host of prizes.

The guess the name of the Teddy competition created a lot of fun and his name was Sidney. Tombola, the Treasure Trail got visitors scratching their heads

SUMMER FAIR: A great day for raising funds. to guess the secret location, another bric-a-brac stall, guess the amount of bottle tops in the jar, of which there were 551 and the winner guessed 550, a very close guess. Two gala raffles brought a huge amount of interest as the prizes were fabulous. Francisco won an enormous basket of goodies including spirits, wine, food, chocolates, tinned stuff and more.

The grand raffle had 21 prizes and the first prize of €200 worth of coach travel

was won by Tony Harrison.

Funds raised will go to help the caring and welfare requirements of the over 50’s in the area. If you want to become a volunteer for Age Concern why not pop into their centre any morning Monday - Friday between 10am to 1.30pm at Calle Paganini, La Siesta, have a coffee, meet the team and find out how your skills or knowledge can be put to good use helping to care for less fortunate people than ourselves.

Not much to go wrong with there, which makes me feel that you are prejudging or scared by the word Witch? Which Witch is very important, of course, but a White Witch uses spells for the sustaining of the flowers of the fields and the fruits of the season, and the balance of Mother Nature. Paganism just sees the World without seeing a Christian or other major religious point of view. Be close to your daughter and support her need to express herself in this way, but eliminate doubting her choices if you can!

Root-changing verbs and words Basic Spanish for everyday needs

LAST week we started looking at rootchanging verbs and got going on the first of three groups which comes under the interesting name of ‘e to ie.’ We saw one example of these which was the verb cerrar.

However, before we plough on too much further there is one point I would like to look at in more detail as it provides a basis for all our root-changing work (I’m sounding like a dentist now!)

We know that pronunciation is important, and part of this is the whole matter of speech rhythm. This is what gives a sound or shape to our speech, rather like the rhythm of music. If music didn’t keep to a certain beat it would become meaningless, and the same is true of speech.

Often, even in our own language, we don’t hear every word someone says, but we understand them because we recognise the tone and rhythm of what they have said.

Tone can tell us things like whether we

are being asked a question or not and it also gives us other information including underlying messages in the phrases uttered.

We have all heard someone saying something as apparently innocent as: ‘give that to me’ in ways that really mean: ‘I’d like to help you’ or ‘I’m in a hurry,’ or ‘I think you’re an idiot!’

This is a whole realm of study in itself, and extremely interesting too, but before I get too carried away, what I’m really getting at here is that every sentence, and also every individual word in a sentence, has its own beat or rhythm that makes it comprehensible.

This happens in English, whether we are aware of it or not. Let’s take a word from this article, for ex-

ample: idiot. When we say this word we place the emphasis on the first ‘i,’ like this I-diot. Now try moving the emphasis to the second ‘i’ like this: id-I-ot. Now place the stress on the O, like this ‘idi-Ot.’ I hope you can hear the difference, and haven’t offended your partner whilst you’re engaged in this activity. Maybe it would be best to wait until you’re alone with your cat or dog, I find they don’t tend to take this sort of thing personally.

This ‘stress’ or ‘beat’ issue arises with English words like ‘refuse,’ ‘present,’ ‘record’ or ‘desert.’ Depending on where we put the beat, they change in meaning.

In Spanish words stress is equally crucial for understanding but the difference is that it is controlled by

very specific rules.

On my website I have some videos which go through these rules thoroughly in relation to all words in the language.

However, for our purposes here we can say that in the case of root-changing verbs, it is when the beat of the word falls on the root (eg CERR) that the sound splits from ‘e’ to ‘ie’ (almost as though the pressure of the beat breaks the sound into two). Look again at the conjugation of ‘cerrar’ and you will see what I mean. cierro cierras cierra

cerramos cerrais cierran

The change occurs in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural. In the other two forms (first and second person plural) the beat goes onto the ending, so the root returns to one, rather than a split, sound.

Therefore in our example, ‘cerrAmos,’ and ‘cerrÁIs’ behave exactly as they would if the verb was not rootchanging as the beat, or pressure, is on the endings.

This is a golden rule for all root-changing verbs, so if by any chance you found my explanation a little unclear we will be looking at many more examples, which means that we will be learning to pronounce them all properly and therefore making sense when we speak.

WHO warns us all to be more active

DOCTORS SURGERY: Many people have fears of a physical examination.

Are you scared of going to the doctors?

DO you put off that trip to the doctor for fear of bad news?

If so,it seems you are not alone. A report suggests a third of us delay appointments, middle-aged men being the worse culprits.

Women are more likely to attend screenings and seek medical help, with men more

likely to suffer symptoms for longer.

The report by 2020 health said many feared the physical examination and the hospital and medical environment. Around a third of those questioned avoided the doctors because they feared finding out they may have

serious illnesses such as cancer.

Researchers said smokers, heavy drinkers and those who are overweight, were less likely to want to hear bad news about their health and feared they would be told to change their lifestyle.

THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that 23 per cent of the adult population and up to 81 per cent of children are not active enough. This leads to concern about developing diseases such as diabetes, cancer or stroke.

As a result, this United Nations body is working on a global action plan to reduce this figure by at least 10 per cent by 2025.

The WHO reports that women and girls are less active than men and children, while older adults are less active than younger people.

They want to see more people become more active, which does not necessarily mean taking up a sport, but any activity that gets the body moving, such as walking, dancing or even doing BE ACTIVE: Try walking, dancing or even doing the the housework. housework.

Theatre trips could prevent dementia

ENJOYING activities such as going to the theatre could help prevent dementia.

Scientists claim such activities help cut the risk of mental decline as they stimulate the brain more, helping to protect against and prevent mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the stage between decline from aging and dementia. Symptoms include becoming forgetful, repeating yourself and problems with reasoning and problem-solving.

The new study followed almost 2,000 adults over the age of 70 who were cognitively normal at the start and were monitored until they showed signs of developing MCI. Their activities and hobbies were analysed and it was found that regular theatre goers developed MCI symptoms later in life.

Meanwhile, another study has reported that women’s brains start going downhill in their 50’s and not in their 60’s as previously thought.

King Edward VIII, a king for just 326 days, was a controversial figure who abdicated on account of his relationship with an American divorcee.

English hypocrisy at its worst, aristocrats were notorious for their between the sheets scandals’ during the depression whilst the workless succumbed to hunger related ailments.

The elite’s trident at the king’s throat had more to do with his empathy with the working classes, an embittered archbishop, and the king’s opposition to war with Germany, which unsettled the pro-war lobby.

liked convention, was dismissive of protocol and said ‘there’ll be no war whilst I am king.’ The king was also quoted as saying that ‘war would be a disaster for Britain.’

In June 1940, Don Javier Bermejillo, a Spanish diplomat was an old friend of Windsor (King Edward VIII). He had known him since the 1920’s and reported a conversation he had had with the Duke to his superiors. Dr Karina Urbach quoted the diplomat as saying, “He wants peace at any price.”

King Edward VIII bitterly resented the pro-war lobby “Windsor wanted to put politicians, including Anthony Eden, up against the wall,” said Urbach.

In March 1936, a month after Hitler ousted the French occupiers from The Rhineland, Windsor, who visited Hitler’s Germany, sent the Fuhrer a telegram wishing him ‘happiness and welfare’ on his 47th birthday.

Churchill later told US General Dwight D Eisenhower that the Duke of Windsor had been appointed governor of the Bahamas in 1940, in order ‘to get him away from Europe beyond the reach of the enemy.’

In 1940, most of Britain’s royalty and governing elite prepared to abandon Tommy to his fate.

Against his wishes, the Duke of Windsor aka King Edward VIII was appointed Governor of the Bahamas from where he couldn’t maintain contact with the Reich.

The nation’s gold reserves were shipped to Ottawa. The Minister of Information, Alfred Duff Cooper sent his son, Julius to Canada but forgot to inform everyone.

Parents who could afford to do so shipped their families out to America or the Commonwealth.

Royal Navy ships were placed on standby to evacuate members of the Royal Family and key members of the government prepared to be whisked off to the United States.

Sunday Times Magazine, May 21, 1972 quoted author P Addison, The fears that flawed the finest hour: ‘In June, July and August of 1940 over 6,000 children took part in the exodus of the rich.’

Historian Phillip Knightley expressed the view that ‘the working class began to feel, with some justification, that the rich had plans to get out whilst the going was good.’

The British-inspired car manufacturer’s ‘Yours Customised’ service allows customers to design and order selected add-ons for their new MINI vehicles.

The current range of personal tweaks include side scuttles, interior decorative strips on the pas-

senger side, LED door sill finishers and LED door projectors.

The customisation service won the ‘Excellence in Business to Customer (B2C)’ category because of its user-friendly online ‘customiser,’ consistent digitalisation and use of innovative production techniques such as 3D printing and laser inscription.

Best-selling Mazda gets power boost MAZDA’S bestselling roadster is set for an update this summer as a new and more powerful version of the MX-5 hits the market.

A boost to engine power is the headline news for this year’s model among a range of tweaks Mazda made.

Mazda’s masterminds upped the 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine’s revs to 7,500rpm from 6,800rpm, while power increased from 158bhp to 182bhp.

sport THE Los Nietos Golf Society journeyed to Hacienda Riquelme for their June individual Stableford competition.

The day started bright and sunny but as the round progressed the clouds did gather and by the time the second group hit the clubhouse it had started to drizzle a bit and then it started as ‘the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain’ and it did.

The last few groups had to dash back to the club house without playing holes 17 and 18. No harm done with the scores but some members got very wet indeed - in fact some could have won the wet t-shirt competition.

Los Nietos Golf

The condition of the course was generally in very good condition and verdant; some of the greens were, however, difficult to read for pace as some had just been treated with sand. The courtesy of the golf shop and bar staff was welcoming and helpful.

Dave McBernie with a handicap of 13 for the day, won with a magnificent score of 40 points and also nearest the pin on hole 2.

The runner-up with a steady score of 35 (and didn’t play the last hole because of the rain) was Club Captain Tim. Their next game is at Vista Bella on July 4 and promises to be a good turnout.

HACIENDA RIQUELME: The day started out dry.

Success for Open Water swimmers

THE team recently played their second away game which resulted in a 2-1 defeat at San Fulgencio.

It was a very, very hot day and they took a good turnout of 12 players for the eighta-side game.

They would like to thank Doug for organising this fixture and he was kept busy changing players on and off the pitch, with some lads wilting in the hot sun.

They were well looked after at the local bar after the game, and a second fixture

Gran Alacant oldies walking football will take place nearer the autumn.

The team cannot play home games on Gran Alacant as there are no astro turf pitches, although there are 11 in Santa Pola, so they will have to use one of

them for home fixtures.

The team play and practise every Thursday afternoon at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre and for the next couple of months they will be able to use the inside pitch, thus keeping out of the summer

sun.

LAST weekend Sevilla and the Swimming Federation of Andalucia hosted the 21st Spanish National Open Water Championships 2018.

This three day event took place at the ‘CAR Isla de La Cartunja’ in the R i o G u a d a l q u i v i r. M o r e t h a n 6 0 0 swimmers from all over Spain, Portugal and further afield participated in a range of categories from 15 years to 70 plus years over distances of 3km, 5km, 7.5km and 10km.

Local swimmers from Alicante, Petrer, Murcia, Elche and Torre Pacheco participated in the Masters 3km event.

Due to the large number of participants, and in the rising heat of the day, Master swimmers started their races in nine separate 10-minute in-

tervals with over 50 swimmers in each start. The course of 3km took a route between bridges over the river and was marked with large white buoys.

Professionally overseen by officials from the Spanish Swimming Federation monitoring competitors by boats around the course, swimmers finished the circuit at the electronic timing board at the start pontoon.

Local swimmers Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly won medals in their events. Beth the gold medal in the Female 70+ category and Vicki Bronze in the Female 50-54 category.

Other local swimmers also had good swims and all are looking forward to the rest of the Open Water season.

PLAYING TOGETHER: To help Butterfly Children.

Butterfly Golf THERE was a minigolf event at Lamosca in Playa Flamenca organised by W.Bro Keith Carter in association with Las Salinas Lodge No 79.

Members and friends gathered in aid of DEBRA commonly known as the Butterfly Charity which offers aid to children who have the skin disease Epidermolysis Bullosa.

The event kicked off by everyone completing the 18-hole course in the beautiful surroundings of Lamosca overlooking the beaches of the Mediterranean. The worshipful master of the Lodge Norman Barrall presented a trophy to the winner of the Ladies event Mrs Mary Mallarky and to the Gentlemen’s winner W.Bro Eric Radding. The wooden spoon was awarded to Mrs Joan Waddington. Everyone indicated that it had been great fun.

The rest of the afternoon saw everyone at Rocky’s Arena Pub nearby enjoying a buffet followed by a raffle. In total €214 for the charity was raised by this event.
