Town halls to bite back by Darren Parmenter SIX municipalities known as ‘The Alacanti’ have again combined forces to combat the threat of bugs and insects. They have allocated more than €3 million to fight them, especially the tiger mosquito, and this year sees an increase of €90,000 in the budget. The town halls taking part in the scheme are Alicante, San Vicente del Raspeig, Campello, San Juan de Alicante, Muchamiel and Agost, all of whom form what is known in Spanish as a ‘Mancomunidad.’ These are groups of municipalities which combine to fund projects that benefit their populations rather than organise them individually. The new contract for a further four years has been awarded to Lokimica (the current holders) which will see them carrying out treatments within the municipalities to wipe out not only mosquitoes, but cockroaches and rats as well.
