Town halls to bite back

by Darren Parmenter SIX municipalities known as ‘The Alacanti’ have again combined forces to combat the threat of bugs and insects. They have allocated more than €3 million to fight them, especially the tiger mosquito, and this year sees an increase of €90,000 in the budget.

The town halls taking part in the scheme are Alicante, San Vicente del Raspeig, Campello, San Juan de Alicante, Muchamiel and Agost, all of whom form what is known in Spanish as a ‘Mancomunidad.’ These are groups of municipalities which combine to fund projects that benefit their populations rather than organise them individually.

The new contract for a further four years has been awarded to Lokimica (the current holders) which will see them carrying out treatments within the municipalities to wipe out not only mosquitoes, but cockroaches and rats as well.

IN my previous working life, I spent a great deal of time travelling around the world meeting with different government officials and heads of state.

In that time, I really only came across the use of bodyguards on three distinct occasions (although there may have been others that I wasn’t aware of).

When I made my first visit to Liberia in the early 1980’s, myself and a colleague were given a bodyguard for the duration of our trip. Dressed completely in black with a red beret and silver plated revolver on his hip and pepper spray in his top pocket, he explained to us that he had ‘juju’ which meant that bullets would bounce off him.

At one stage, we were invited to lunch with the Minister of Telecommunication and a member of the People’s Redemption Council who brought his machine gun toting bodyguard with him so the two of them paced backwards and forwards as we

A few years later, I entertained the first President of the newly independent Federated States of Micronesia, Tosiwo Nakayama to dinner at the top of one of the largest buildings in Chicago and we had to reserve an extra table with a clear line of sight for his bodyguard who had a very noticeable bulge under his jacket.

The third occasion was on the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands War when we entertained Baroness Thatcher, Sir Rex Hunt (Governor of Falkland Islands at the time of the invasion), his wife Lady Mavis and the Administrator of Ascension Island.

We took over the restaurant which was part of a country pub

and again had to arrange a second table for the former Prime Minister’s personal secretary and police bodyguard (who didn’t appear to have a bulge under his jacket) who in actual fact was more like a ‘nanny’ as she was by that time a little forgetful.

There was some consternation when she decided that she needed to go to the toilet which was in the relatively crowded bar next door and the looks on the faces of some of the regulars as ‘Mrs T’ wandered into the bar was quite amusing.

All of this does have a reason behind it and that is that on the Costa del Sol in particular, there are people who do regularly employ bodyguards or security personnel to protect themselves or their property.

These are celebrities, wealthy business people or in some cases those who need protection for ‘other’ reasons so they hire the services of different people.

There is now an official association for registered and ‘legal’ private security companies, APROSAR and this is because

there are some major problems that we mere mortals may not be aware of.

In the past four years, it is estimated by the association that 600 individuals have been fined for being ‘unofficial and unqualified’ bodyguards and in truth many of them are British or Irish but they are not the main problem.

In Spain, when people approach retirement age, they are often still on the books but aren’t required to work on a full time basis which means that they have plenty of free time in which to find additional employment.

This is true of different police authorities and I understand that officers are allowed to keep both their identification papers and their firearms until such time as they finally retire.

The problem is of course that in the event of a break in or attack, there is anecdotal evidence of those bodyguards leaving because if they stay to protect their charges and other police officers are called, then they may well be charged with inappropriate activity.

The moral of the story is, if you are so unpopular that you need protection, make sure that you go to a recognised security company with fully trained staff who won’t either ‘do a runner’ or sell you to the highest bidder.

THE change of national government has resulted in a positive announcement for all those drivers who pay tolls on the AP-7 motorway.

According to an interview in the Spanish media with the new Minister of Development, Jose Luis Abalos, the PSOE government will end the tolls on those roads where the existing 50year concession is due to end between now and 2021.

The stretch of the AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona will become free for all users as from January 1, 2020 and is part of a number of other motorways that will revert to State control over the next three years.

Defibrillator saves a woman’s life

A WOMAN resident of Poble Nou de Benitachell owes her life to the quick work of two Local Police officers ... and a defibrillator.

The two men arrived at the woman’s house after her husband had called the emergency 112 number when she collapsed at home. According to reports in the Spanish media, he told the operator that his wife was unconscious, had no pulse and wasn’t responding at all.

Within just two minutes of getting the call, the two police officers arrived at the scene and once they realised she had suffered a cardiac arrest they began to revive her using one of the de-

fibrillators which the local municipality had recently acquired.

After two sessions of following the laid down resuscitation procedures, she began to show signs of life just as the paramedics arrived.

The woman wanted to thank the officers for saving her life and explained that the incident unfolded after “taking my regular medication and having a lay down, I was then found by my husband an hour later.”

Such events have once again proved the value of having members of the Local Police trained in life-saving procedures that can, as in this case, save vital minutes as well.

Benidorm’s old, old town BENIDORM City Council is planning to discover some of its origins by trying to locate the walls of an ancient castle.

It is understood that they could date back to 1325 and are believed to be around the Punta del Canfali, an area known by many as the headland that separates the Poniente and Levante beaches.

The project will consist of mainly archaeological research, with a full analysis of whatever remains are found.

However, it’s understood that depending on what is discovered, the original structures could be preserved and protected and add to the attractions available in Benidorm.

NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested seven men for their part in selling fake sportswear in a Denia street market.

According to a report in the Spanish media, they took advantage of t h e c u r r e n t s t a g i n g o f t h e F I FA World Cup and were able to sell mainly football shirts relating to a number of international teams.

The detained men are a mix of Spanish, Moroccan and Senegalese nationals and their arrests follow an investigation which began at the start of this month after complaints were made from legal clothing manufacturers who became aware of the alleged counterfeit items.

Once the shirts were examined, it was discovered that the price they were on sale for was significantly lower than those being sold by authorised distributors.

WITHIN two years, the municipality of San Vicente de Raspeig will need to find an alternative contract for street cleaning and rubbish collection.

The private company which currently has the contract has been informed by the council that it won’t be extending their agreement, and will instead consider running the service ‘in house.’

Councillor Marilo Jorda is already looking at a number of alternatives but is conscious of the fact that there are municipal elections due in May 2019. Therefore, whatever decision is taken “we will do what is in the best interests of the people of San Vicente,” said Jorda.

To this end, the council has commissioned a company in Leon to undertake a full feasibility study as to which system - a private contractor or municipal run - is to be the most advantageous in the long term.

As with most municipalities, the cost for rubbish collection and cleaning is the highest in the annual budget and in this case it totals €5,852,813 which also includes the costs of dumping and treating the waste.

Yacht club explosion A 51-YEAR-OLD mechanic suffered severe burns on his arms after an explosion inside the boat he was working on in the Denia Yacht Club.

The accident happened on Saturday evening around 8pm, and as he tried to fight the resulting fire he was burnt on both arms and one of his legs.

He also suffered slight burns to his face.

Denia’s Local Police were joined by the SAMU paramedics at the scene, and after being treated was taken to the burns unit of the Fe de Valencia Hospital.

Hats on to Benidorm THE Visit Benidorm Foundation has launched a new line of merchandising that will be sold in hotels and authorised businesses throughout the city.

The new lines were presented at a meeting of the Foundation, where it was announced that they had already begun to contact the first of a long list of hotels with the aim of setting up a network of sales as part of this collaboration.

The products include t-shirts, baseball caps, bags etc and will also be sold at a number of festivals and concerts held throughout the summer at a dedicated stand.

Pineapples contain a hidden ingredient THE Guardia Civil and the Spanish Tax Agency have intercepted a shipment of drugs hidden in plaster figures.

The items were found during a search at the Alicante-Elche Airport when 180 grams of marihuana were discovered as part of a random inspection.

Officers were drawn to a small box that was destined for a northern European country, and as they opened the package found two small pineapple figures made from plaster and gold in colour.

But what at first appeared to be an innocent pair of objects ended up showing its hidden contents after going through an X-ray machine.

out... but they were only there to cover the strong and noticeable smell of marihuana that was inside sealed plastic bags.

The Guardia Civil is now investigating the sender of the shipment for alleged drug trafficking and are checking to see whether any more similar packages have been sent from the same source.

More women’s workshops

Library gets new stock S A N J U A N D E A L I C A N T E ’ S To w n Council has recently spent €5,000 to purchase some new books for the municipal library.

According to a report in the Spanish media, this is the first time this has happened since 2016, with the council claiming that there has been no provision in the budget since then.

The situation has been taken up by library staff who even resorted to displaying the exact number of days on the door that they had been without new stock.

Councillor Clara Rodriguez confirmed that the library will have their new reading material “in a matter of days.”

DURING the last quarter of this year, Alfaz del Pi Town Council will be holding another ‘Feminine Empowerment Workshop,’ which follows on from the success of the one just finished.

The main objective of the workshop, held between February and June in the local social centre, was to promote the strengths in women and to encourage them to nurture their previously hidden skills and act upon them.

Councillor Concha Coves said: “The workshop has created a network of friendship and support which allows the women to feel valued.”

A dozen women of different nationalities and aged between 30 and over 70 attended the first course, with all of them expressing their wish to continue to learn and to reach their full potential.

Mayors meet to solve beach traffic issues

by David Bennett THREE municipalities - Alicante, San Juan de Alicante and Campello - are joining forces to look at solving the continuing traffic problems that occur on the old N332. They are particularly looking at ways of solving the jams that always take place in San Juan when vehicles are arriving or leaving the nearby beaches of Muchavista and San Juan itself.

The problem has existed for a number of years and is always exacerbated in the busier summer months, with three entrances / exits converging on Avenida Miguel Hernandez.

by Stephen Giovanni A RESIDENT of Pego has claimed polluted water is entering the Marjal Pego Oliva natural park despite the town’s council facing a European Union (EU) Parliament probe.

A source within the town, who wishes to remain anonymous, told RTN Pego Council had paid fines annually due to the pollution since 2010. They added it may have gone on longer.

Pego Council officials failed to respond to multiple requests for comment on the issue. The local authority said on its website that it administers the western half of the park and it is a protected area.

The local source claimed water had been sampled downstream from a sewage treatment plant believed to be the cause of the pollution.

The source added the town’s sewage infrastructure, including the plant, were not properly connected to that of an urbanisation in Pego, with the pollution occurring as a result.

Test results from the water sampled showed that it was contaminated. The source added water within the park itself had not

being tested but there was other ‘extremely good’ evidence that suggested it had been polluted.

“We can only speculate quite reasonably that the pollution has entered the water table but we don’t know how far the effects of it have reached,” the source said.

The source added there was an ongoing legal dispute and the European Parliament had become involved. Officials told the source nothing could be done

while the pollution was being investigated.

“Everyone blames the legal dispute so nothing gets done. Everyone is to blame. It’s a difficult situation for residents who don’t want to anger the parties involved and who feel powerless,” they said.

This paper put the claims to Laura Castella Sastre, Pego Council’s environment and urban waste spokesperson. She did not respond to questions or a follow

up email.

A court ruled previously in a separate case that the authority had improperly drained the natural park’s wetlands and that they had done so despite receiving writs from a judge.

The court’s decision, which came in 1999, was in connection with the town authority’s plans to turn the land over to rice cultivation, according to media reports from the time.

November fiesta support BENIDORM’S popular November fiestas held in honour of its Patron Saint are due to receive a boost and a higher profile.

Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, accompanied by Councillor Jesus Carrobles will raise the proposal at the next council meeting to ensure the fiestas are included in the Valencian Community festivities.

The move has the support of local groups and associations connected with the city’s fiestas.

The November celebrations have seen their popularity increase with both residents and visitors, with many people taking a winter break to coincide with them.

This is backed up by hotel association HOSBEC who reports hotel occupancy as high as 83.7 per cent for the first half of November.

A FATHER of two from Sheffield has been found dead in Benidorm while taking part in a friend’s stag weekend.

At present, it’s not known how Lee Okrasa died, but an online appeal has already been set up to help pay for his body to be sent back to the UK as it’s understood that he didn’t have travel insurance.

According to a report in The Star local newspaper, it’s believed that his family needs £5,000 for the repatriation costs of which around £1,300 has already been donated.

Forest firefighter numbers up to 700 DECISONS taken at both provincial and regional levels of government mean that around 700 troops will be allocated this summer to help fight forest fires.

Alicante and Valencian governments have added 116 new firefighters to the already 600-strong dedicated force that are strategically located in 12 brigades across the Alicante Province, in its own fight at combating the high risk of fires due to the already excess growth of vegetation.

by Glenn Scott ACCORDING to a report in the Spanish media, the country’s new PSOE government is in the process of working on a Royal Decree that will once again make healthcare free for everyone living in Spain, even if they are here illegally.

The previous PP government of Mariano Rajoy, which fell just two weeks ago, stopped healthcare for anyone who wasn’t in the country legally - except for accident and emergency treatment - back in 2012, although not all hospitals operated under the same criteria.

A significant number of doctors across the country denounced those measures as ‘cruel’ and continued to treat anyone who came into their surgeries.

One of the most vociferous against the decision was from within the Valencian community whose newly-elected PSOE government publicly announced in 2015 that “healthcare would be available free to anyone who needed it”, although they were subsequently ordered by the courts to follow the rules set from central government.

If the rules do change again, it will take about six weeks for them to be fully implemented.

Authors of the Italian jobs caught ACROSS both the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, officers from the Guardia Civil have dismantled a criminal network believed to be behind cars stolen in Italy and sold online.

A total of seven people, between the ages of 28 and 56 and of Spanish, Romanian and Moldovan nationalities, were arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicles, fraud and the falsification of documentation. Three of the detained were caught in Alicante.

The group’s ‘modus operandi’ was always the same as they began by stealing cars from the street in Italy.

Once taken, the original chassis number was changed for one from an Italian car of the same make and model. They then faked the car’s log book and the bill of sale.

The cars ended up for sale in Spain where any trace of the original vehicle would be lost after passing through the traffic departments in Alicante, Albacete and Madrid.

The amount of money lost by the buyers of the ‘fake cars’ is estimated to be around €190,000.

“OH, here we go again,” I thought when I received an email from the Peter Tatchell Foundation last week saying that Tatchell, 66, the London-based human rights activist, had been arrested in Moscow for holding a one-man protest against homophobia on the first day of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. I was angry but not surprised.

Neither, I’m guessing, was Tatchell. After all, he had been arrested twice before for protesting in Moscow and suffered brain damage after being attacked by Russian neo-Nazis in 2007.

On this occasion, Tatchell stood with a banner supporting gay men who have been violently targeted in a purge in Chechnya.

He was released after almost two hours, and told to appear at a court hearing on June 26.

Tatchell said: “Getting arrested is standard for Russians who protest for LGBT+ rights… President Putin has failed to condemn and act against the homophobic witch-hunts in Chechnya, which have seen scores of LGBT+ peo-

His arrest was quickly followed by a warning issued by the UK Foreign Office to Britons visiting Russia which, in effect, bluntly stated: “Don’t do anything to annoy the authorities who have banned all protests of any size during the World Cup.” Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK’s Director, said: “The response to Peter Tatchell’s protest is straight out of the Russian authorities’ playbook, protest in a high-profile location like Red Square, hold a placard criticising Putin or speak in support of LGBTI rights in public, and face immediate arrest by the police.

“In present-day Russia, there’s

no right to peacefully protest, no right to publicly stand up for LGBTI people, and certainly no chance of staging a street protest about last year’s sinister gay crackdown in Chechnya.”

This begs the question: why on earth did FIFA choose Russia to host the World Cup? Back in 2014, when the World Cup was hosted by Brazil, FIFA issued this statement: “Today we strive not only for victory in the game, but for the victory of peace; for mutual respect, regardless of gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion or class. These are the values and aspirations of FIFA, the wider world of sport and people everywhere. We pledge to do our utmost to achieve global peace

and a life of dignity for all.”

But these are certainly not the values of Putin and his thugs, nor are they the values of Qatar, which will host the next World Cup. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, which also stands accused by Amnesty International of exploiting migrants from Bangladesh, India and Nepal brought in to refurbish the Khalifa Stadium. Some are being subjected to forced labour.

Said AI under the headline Qatar World Cup of Shame: “They [the migrants] can’t change jobs, they can’t leave the country and they often wait months to get paid. Meanwhile, FIFA, its sponsors and the construction companies involved are

set to make massive financial gains from the tournament.”

What really riles me is that FIFA has sponsorship deals with many international corporations that are happy to support Gay Pride events in liberal democracies, but remain silent when events take place in countries known for despicable human rights violations.

A few of them made all the right noises when asked to comment on the World Cup being hosted by Russia and Qatar. Coca Cola, for example, said: “We believe that through our partnership and continued involvement with FIFA we can help foster optimism and unity, while making a positive difference in the communities we serve. The Coca-Cola company strives for diversity, inclusion and equality in our business, and we support these rights throughout society as well.”

Yeah, sure you do. But fine words butter no parsnips. The only way people will take such statements seriously is when corporations flat-out refuse to support events in countries which hold human rights in absolute contempt.

For the record I DETEST football, and applaud Tatchell’s courageous stand.

A REPORT has highlighted ongoing issues of clogged up pipes and sewers in Benidorm, much of it caused by wet wipes.

An estimated 368 tons of what has been described as ‘the monster in the sewers’ are taken out of the network every year and the problem isn’t going away... it’s getting worse.

Wa t e r company Hidraqua faces a struggle every month to keep up with the amount of drains and pipes and filters that need to be cleaned, as failure to do so will only lead to sewage back-ups and the potential health consequences.

Back in 2017, a grand total of 368 tons of wet wipes and similar products such as make-up removers were taken out of the drains, but that figure is set to be eclipsed this y e a r. A l r e a d y, a r o u n d

200 tons have been discovered with many of the products sold under the guise of being biodegradable.

The evidence and experience of Benidorm suggest otherwise...

The extra time needed to clean out the drains in the municipality leads to complaints from local people and tourists about the resulting smell.

As Hidraqua said,

“Something that should be an occasional task has almost become a daily routine for our staff.”

Both Hidraqua and the Benidorm authorities hope that a message on the water bills sent out this summer will warn people of the dangers, as well as notices in hotel bathrooms to stop the practice of using toilets as a rubbish bin.

New vehicle by-laws planned BENIDORM City Council has taken the decision to act on the growing number of Segway scooters and electric skateboards.

Until now, this particular mode of getting around and seeing the sights of the tourist capital had no specific regulation on their use, apart from prohibiting moving vehicles using the same spaces as pedestrians.

been fighting for some years to control the use of mobility scooters, particularly against those who rent them out or use them when they have no medical need to do so.

The common rule now is people have to be more than 55 years old or, if below that age, have to prove a physical disability or injury before gaining access.

Added to this will be restrictions to 20kph on roads and access paths and as low as 4kph when using parks.

Family fortunate A GRANDFATHER and his sixyear-old grandson have been injured in an accident when the car they were travelling in left the CV-724 road in Pedreguer and ended up in an orange grove.

Emergency services, which

were alerted by other drivers who witnessed the incident, arrived at the scene and immediately set about rescuing the pair.

While the grandson was receiving emergency treatment for his injuries - which haven’t been

made public - his grandfather was being cut free by the firefighters.

Both were later taken to hospital, where it’s understood that neither were in danger, and continue their recovery.

The drugs finds continue...

THREE properties which have been searched in Moraira, Javea and Calpe have resulted in significant finds of drugs and evidence of alleged drug trafficking.

The operation, which is ongoing, was carried out by officers of USECIC (Citizens Security Unit) and seized an, as yet, unconfirmed amount of drugs.

According to reports in the Spanish media, the raids are connected to a similar one that took place in Benissa a few weeks ago by the Guardia Civil.

This resulted in the arrest of two suspected ringleaders and the discovery of 400 marihuana plants in a farmhouse in Pego.

by Darren Parmenter ALICANTE’S famous bonfires (Hogueras) held around this time every year are celebrating their 90th anniversary and continue to attract visitors with the much-needed and appreciated boost it brings to the local economy.

Coinciding with the longest day of the year, the 2018 Hogueras got underway yesterday (Thursday) and lasts until Sunday and is expected to see more than €100 million spent over the four days.

What will no doubt help for this year is the fact that the main celebrations fall at the weekend, and as such Alicante will see more than a million people in the city enjoy a full programme of events that can be found around every corner.

The economic impact

IMPACT: Alicante’s Hogueras set to bring millions of euros over four days. on the city is calculated by the University of Alicante, who believe that each visitor spends on average €100.

The hotel, bars and restaurant trade expect a windfall of about €70 million with the remaining €30 million in shopping, transport and other sectors that directly benefit from the Hogueras.

According to a report in the Spanish media, the

Alicante City Council see the investment of a relatively small amount of €4 million to help stage the Hogueras as being worthwhile when the returns are taken into account.

Hotel occupancy during the week, according to the Provincial Hotel Association, is expected to be around 80 per cent for Alicante with more than 3,100 rooms available in the city’s 34 hotels.

A reader observes FOR around seven years I have been a regular reader of RTN. During this time I

have learned to avoid reading the articles of some of your regular contributors, but as I

believe in ‘free speech,’ I would never dream of complaining.

by Barry Duke in the May 18 - 24, 2018 issue was exceptional in the pure hatred that he spouted against people like myself.

His article was entitled ‘DONALD DUCK’ and it was a scathing attack on the democratically elected president of the USA, a nation that came to the rescue of the United Kingdom and Europe on two separate occasions during the 20th century.

Whether you agree w i t h D o n a l d Tr u m p o r not, he is the first President of the USA for many years who has at least tried to keep the promises he made to the electorate who elected him.

However, the reason

for my letter is not about Donald Trump, the reason for my letter concerns what Barry Duke has said about some of the American supporters of the Republican President.

He claims that these supporters are mainly ‘white evangelical Christians.’

He then goes on to call them ‘halfwits who trumpet their intolerance.’

If that was not enough, he then calls these same ‘white evangelical Christians’ ‘God besotted maggots’ who spread their ‘toxic messages of hate’ aimed at feminists, the LGBT c o m m u n i t y, M u s l i m s , Jews, atheists and all others who don’t share their ‘Christian’ values.

Lastly, he calls these same ‘white evangelical Christians’ ‘wicked im-

beciles.’

Now as a ‘white evangelical Christian’ myself and representing an ‘evangelical congregation’ here in Benidorm I cannot just sit back and say nothing.

The words spoken by Barry Duke are very offensive to all ‘evangelical Christians’ be they white, black, or any other colour.

In addition, Christian believers have never been guilty of spreading hate because the one that we follow always preached a message of love for all people.

However, the Lord Jesus also preached a message of repentance.

The Bible clearly reveals that ‘all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ and as a result men and women need to come in repentance and trust in

the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour.

God loved people like Barry Duke and myself so much that he left heaven’s glory and died on the Cross of Calvary for both of us.

Yo u m a y c a l l m e a wicked imbecile if you like Barry, but your only hope is in Jesus Christ the Saviour of us ‘Evangelical Christians.’

JOSE CHULVI, the mayor of Javea, has asked for the Alicante Provincial Council to take measures to guarantee the water supply to the Marina Alta. He also took the opportunity to stress the need for solidarity and co-operation between the municipalities to maintain a good infrastructure for water.

The appeal was made at the General Meeting of the Marina Alta Water Consortium, held in Javea, to prevent the region from going through the serious situation that resulted in drought conditions in 2016.

One of the proposals discussed was linking the water supplies of Teulada, Benissa and Gata to be used in cases of emergency... an idea that could, in future, be extended to other nearby municipalities.

Ice cream makers still ‘cornet’ the market THE National Association of Artisan Ice Cream Makers (ANCHEA) is confident that they will be able to recover a drop in their sales now that the summer season and the warmer weather are here.

Companies that produce home-made ice cream have been concerned by a 15 per cent fall in sales that was due to the adverse weather conditions in the first half of the year.

The ‘ice cream season’ officially began on March 19 (Spanish Father’s Day and a major national holiday) but it’s between the months of June and August and often into September that naturally sees the highest volume of sales.

According to a report in the Spanish media, a local ice cream maker based in Denia said that this year so far “has been very difficult” and shows no resemblance to that of 2017 when sales increased between 6 and 12 per cent due to the settled fine weather.

Some areas in the northern part of Spain have seen a reduction of up to 20 per cent this year alone, but the President of ANCHEA, Marco Miquel is confident of being able to recover what has been lost and eventually achieve the results of 12 months ago which saw an overall increase of 2 per cent.

CONFIDENT: 15 per cent drop in home-made ice cream sales can be recovered.

Lucky escape after collision FOR reasons that are still being investigated, a can and a van have collided with each other on the roundabout that accesses the Finestrat Shopping Centre.

Several people were injured in the incident, including two children, who were taken to hospital and kept under observation.

According to reports in the Spanish media, witnesses to the crash said that the skill of the car driver prevented the car from overturning after the impact with the van.

The accident caused a number of traffic jams in the area after one of the lanes on the roundabout was closed while patients and wreckage was cleared.

AS a way of encouraging even more visitors to attend the Alicante Hogueras over the next few days, a number of the local TRAM railway stations have increased the number of free car parking spaces available.

TRAM will offer 200 free spaces at its stations in Alicante, and in addition a further 164 for cars and 34 for motorbikes spread around three council-run parking areas close to the train stations in a number of other nearby municipalities.

INITIATIVE: Over 200 additional parking spaces along the TRAM route.

With more than 300 streets closed in the city centre during the Hogueras festivities, traffic jams and park-

ing issues are inevitable and so the more drivers that can park up and go to the nearest bonfires by taking the TRAM can only make the experience less stressful.

This initiative backs up the recently announced 24-hour TRAM service that will operate during the Alicante Hogueras to attract visitors served by the trains between Alicante and Benidorm... and then on to Denia. Extra parking spaces are also available at Calpe, Benissa and Teulada stations.

‘Sarfend’ people to land in Alicante POPULAR Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has announced it will start a service linking Alicante-Elche Airport with London-Southend Airport. Although technically some miles out of London, Southend is still classed as a London airport and will be flying in and out of the Costa Blanca five-times weekly as from April 2019. It’s also closer for many people living in that part of the UK who until now have had to use Gatwick and Stansted.

In addition they will introduce two weekly flights from London-Southend to Reus (Tar-

ragona), five to Malaga and four to Palma.

Ryanair now carries upwards of 131 million passengers a year, making it the most used of the handful of low-cost airlines. It operates more than 2,000 daily flights connecting more than 220 destinations in 37 countries.

Currently flying a fleet of 430 Boeing-737 aircraft, it has an order for an additional 240 with the aim of further reducing its fares and at the same time increase passenger numbers to an estimated 200 million annually by the year 2024.

Neighbourhood that outgrew the town A TOTAL of 18,394 people live in Alfaz del Pi and 9,396 of them live in Albir.

Some claim that Albir was inhabited first and Alfaz became the bolthole, later fortified, where pirates and smugglers hid their booty and themselves when necessary.

We do know that 2,000 years ago Albir had a Ro-

man des-res in a privileged position at the end of the beach, sheltered by the Sierra Helada. It was inhabited until the fifth century AD and according to archaeologists the estate belonging to its well-heeled owners produced oil and wine and probably cured fish as well.

gation Channel - which transformed local agriculture by bringing water from Monte Ponoig to Polop de la Marina, La Nucia, Alfaz and Benidorm.

In 1836 Alfaz separated from Polop and its name was changed to Alfaz del Pi in honour of a pine that was planted in 1786 by townspeople claiming inde-

pendence from the Barony.

The Benidorm tourism boom of the early 70’s inevitably spread outwards and developers looked towards neighbouring Albir.

So too did homebuyers wanting the advantages and amenities of a Mediterranean resort that was more peaceful and less crowded.

NORWAY DAY: Celebrated by all, regardless of nationality each year.

JUST over 55 per cent of the Alfaz and Albir population were born outside Spain.

Around 100 nationalities live there although the majority are Scandinavian, British or Dutch.

After London, the municipality has the largest number of expatriate Norwegians outside their country, earning it the name of Little Norway, with a registered population of 3,000 although the local authorities suspect that the floating population could be three times larger.

There is a Norwegian school, church, shops and supermarkets and students taking the Bergenstest qualification certifying competence in Norwegian, can take the oral exam in Alfaz, the only place outside Norway where this is possible.

THE Raco d’Albir beach, like all Mediterranean beaches tends to be crowded in July and August.

But it’s usually possible to find space on the Albir beach which although shingly, won a Blue Flag for its excellent condition and facilities when the first awards were made in 1987.

It has received one ever since, but as well as a beach it is at the heart of everything happening throughout the summer.

Many of the events linked to next month’s Alfaz Film Festival, now entering its 30th anniversary, will be held nearby and anyone seeking some culture can nip across the road to the Villa Romana outdoor museum on the site of a first century villa.

The beach is also the perfect starting point for a walk up to the Lighthouse. Located inside the Sierra Helada national park the Faro was built in 1863 and still guides all shipping in the area.

Local beaches now cleaned every day

A hot time in the city

Another rock rescue NOT for the first time in recent weeks, the Peñon de Ifach has been the location for a rescue operation carried out by helicopter. The latest incident surrounded a 66year-old German woman who slipped when walking up the famous rock and suffered a sprained left ankle.

The woman, on holiday with members of her family who were with her at the time of the accident, had to wait to be treated as none of them had a mobile phone. One of her daughters had to retrace her steps to the bottom of the Peñon to raise the alarm which resulted in an Alfa 1 helicopter being dispatched to help with the rescue.

The injured woman was transferred by ambulance to the Villajoyosa Hospital.

AS from last weekend, the company that has the contract for cleaning and maintaining the quality of Calpe’s beaches now operates seven days a week.

From now on, up to 15 people will be working to keep the beaches in perfect condition and will include an additional service that will see the rubbish bins emptied in the afternoons and backing up the morning cleaning routines.

The full cleaning procedures consist of using machines to thoroughly sweep the sand, removing solid items such as cigarette butts, alongside tidying up the pavements and promenades and disinfecting the foot baths.

HISTORY: The filming team prepare to tell a 75-year-old story.

Calpe... a part of British Second World War history

by Darren Parmenter A PART of Calpe’s maritime history is currently being turned into a television documentary.

RTVE director, Fernando Navarette, is in the municipality filming scenes for a programme centred on a German submarine which was sunk in the bay off Calpe back in 1943.

In order to carry out this project, Navarette has had to obtain the support of a Spanish Navy ship to control the ‘traffic’ in the area and to guarantee the safety of the diving team.

The filmmakers are also indebted to the cooperation of Calpe Council and the Royal Club Nautico.

This project is the culmination of 10 years work to account for the last 24

hours of the Nazi submarine before it was sunk by aircraft of the Royal Air Force flying out of Gibraltar.

A number of interviews have been carried out in Spain and Germany in order to reach this stage, and it’s hoped that the documentary will be finished at the end of the year and broadcast next spring.

MEMBERS of Calpe’s PSOE opposition have complained about the conditions in the municipality’s Civic Centre. They have raised the issue of the lack of air conditioning in the building which is used by the elderly residents of Calpe, stating that they are enduring very high temperatures. “The provision to renew the air conditioning units was part of the municipal budget for 2018 at a cost of €70,000,” said a PSOE spokesperson.

The PSOE went on to say, in a report in the Spanish media, they “deeply regret that our elderly population have to suffer this situation which is due to negligence shown by the government team. They are more concerned with their own party issues than the welfare of the people of Calpe.”

about to be unveiled.

What we can say is two of the dishes that have made Mister X famous over many years are their Duck with Orange and Steak Tartare, and they stay on the new menu.

“Even though we’ve only been running Mister X since February, we’ve been pleased to know that many old customers have been delighted to find us open once again... and have returned when they’ve discovered that the quality they were once used to hasn’t changed with us,” said Lucas.

There is no doubt that Lucas has a passion for cooking food of the highest quality, using only the freshest of vegetables and ingredients bought every day, and he simply cannot wait to launch the new Mister X dining experience.

“Our plates of food are not large, but neither are they small and looking lost either. I simply want people not to leave Mister X feeling hungry,” explained Lucas.

Dodging the raindrops THE skies looked very threatening and rain seemed to be on its way, but the Ermita del Popul on the Javea - Jesus Pobre road was full to capacity to hear Music Unlimited perform their concert, Viva La Musica.

Under the direction of their founder, Joanna Baldwin, the choir presented an eclectic mix of musical styles covering seven centuries of choral compositions.

Although most of the items were sung a capella, two pieces were accompanied brilliantly on the organ by Nick Hale: the beautiful Lux Aeterna set to Elgar’s Nimrod, and S SWesley’s dramatic anthem Blessed be the God and Father. Also, in the second half of the programme, Gordon Lawson accompanied the choir in his

own lovely arrangement of the traditional Irish song, The Lark in the Clear Air. Afterwards, bravely ignoring the imminent threat of thunder and rain, everyone was able to enjoy the al fresco reception of cava and a tempting array of canapés, all organised by the committee members of the Javea church.

The concert and reception, a delightful and memorable evening despite having to dodge the raindrops, raised €715 to support the work of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy.

RTN Life Masons donate to the Children’s Home in Denia LOCAL Masons from Puerta de Xabia Lodge recently held a summer party and barbecue to raise money for the Children’s Home in Denia.

They were fortunate to have glorious weather after a previous day of heavy rain and more than 70 Masons and guests turned out to support this worthy cause.

It was held at the Casa de la Pizza restaurant in Costa Nova and a sumptuous barbecue was served to the expectant guests.

After a huge selection of tapas type starters, numerous meat courses and several different salads were served which disappeared at an alarming rate. To finish there was a selection of beautiful desserts.

tertainer, Irish Des, who sang and played songs to suit all tastes and, as usual, gave excellent value.

He played for the whole afternoon and it wasn’t long before the guests started dancing to his excellent music.

There was also a quiz, which was particularly tricky, and had guests scratching their heads before the winners were finally announced and present-

ed with a half case of cava.

A charity raffle was also held which raised €420 and will be donated, along with other money raised, to the Children’s Home in Denia later in the summer.

It was a great afternoon which was hugely enjoyed by all.

New innovations available Summer skincare take care of the skin in the sun!

IT’S summer and that means extra attention needs to be paid to your skin to prevent damage, brown spots, redness and increased oil. Here are some basic advices not only for summer, but also to help your daily skincare routine.

1. Wear sunscreen faithfully.

• SPF numbers - a higher number doesn’t necessarily mean it’s more effective. Did you know that an SPF 50 protects only 2 per cent more than an SPF 30? At Derma Clinic Spain we recommend to use a minimum of SPF 50.

• Generous application is the key. Use a nickel size amount and treat the neck as a separate area.

• Consider the sunlight/UV rays that penetrate through clouds and windows (it causes premature ageing), always use SPF no matter what. Even indoors.

• Wear SPF year round. It doesn’t have to be hot to get damage, you can get just as much damage on cooler days.

2. Protect your neck and chest as this area is an extension of your face.

• The sides of the neck and the chest get incredible amounts of sun exposure and are often neglected.

3. Be sure to give your skin extra water-based hydration since summer heat can evaporate water from the skin.

• Moisturiser keeps moisture and oil in the skin but consider using extra water-based products to give hydration to the skin. Use a special hydration mask twice a week.

4. Topical antioxidants: Vitamin C&E • Free radicals contribute to ageing (from oxygen, daylight, etc.).

• Use antioxidants to act as a bodyguard for skin cells.

5. Limit your time spent out in the heat to prevent brown spots and capillary damage.

Stay out of the heat as much as possible. (If pigmentation is a big problem, avoid working out outside, hot yoga, sauna, anything that causes redness and heat).

WHO warns us all to be more active THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that 23 per cent of the adult population and up to 81 per cent of children are not active enough. This leads to concern about developing diseases such as diabetes, cancer or stroke.

As a result, this United Nations body is working on a global action plan to reduce this figure by at least 10 per cent by 2025.

The WHO reports that women and girls are less active than men and children, while older adults are less active than younger people.

They want to see more people become more active, which does not necessarily mean taking up a sport, but any activity that gets the body moving, such as walking, dancing or even doing the housework.

DOES wealth really bring you happiness?

Many believe it does whilst others would argue the contrary.

How is it that we can visit the poorest of countries and experience real happiness amongst such poverty?

Whilst employed as a trainee finance broker in the City of London, 30 years ago, a senior member of staff once said to me “However successful and wealthy you become, you will never be any happier than you are right now.”

I didn’t fully understood what he really meant, and he didn’t elaborate, and found his statement rather strange especially as it came from a well-respected, successful person that ‘appeared’ to have everything; dream house, prestigious cars, holiday home, designer clothes etc.

My naive perception at that time was that surely he must be very happy with everything he already has.

Many people spend a lifetime pursuing happiness under the misconception that financial wealth is the answer, only to find themselves unfulfilled, confused and empty when they eventually reach their goal or dream, if at all.

PRECIOUS GIFT: Money isn’t everything.

The most common fear, is that of poverty, which simply puts the emphasis on wealth.

Many are confused between happiness and pleasure, often seeking outside ourselves for something to make us feel good inside. We have become conditioned by consumerism and marketing. As an example, the novelty of a holiday, sports car, boat or simply more money, brings us only short term pleasure, changing our state for a brief period of time, and ceases when the law of familiarity kicks in. Each time this happens, we become more desensitised, leaving us striving for more and more to reach that same level of

pleasure and self-worth.

You see, trying to find yourself through wealth and possessions doesn’t work, if anything, it really just keeps the consumerism wheel turning. If everyone could readily afford exclusive, expensive designer labels, such items would lose their perceived value and we would be left with nothing more than their material value. People that tend to gravitate towards such things would quickly lose their identity and the significance they attach themselves to no longer has any value, rendering the person struggling with their very own identity. I cannot stress how important it

is, not to lose oneself in things that wealth can buy, as it is not the answer to long term happiness.

Wealth gives many people their ‘identity’ and people allow it to become ‘what they are’ leaving them struggling to find ‘who they are.’

They’re identified by their job and possessions, giving them a certain perceived status in society.

If they were to lose their job, wealth or possessions, then they would simply be lost, they have simply forgotten who they are.

So what is true happiness?

It’s appreciating the things you have rather than focusing on the things you don’t have.

It’s being grateful. Selflessly giving without the expectation of reward.

Happiness cannot be pursued, but you can pursue a lifestyle that truly results in happiness. True happiness and success comes from the realisation of a ‘worthwhile’ goal or dream for the ‘greater good.’ It’s the process and the journey in doing so where you will find fulfilment and happiness over and above short term pleasure.

Happiness is all around us if we choose to look, it’s a way of being and not having.

It’s ok to enjoy life’s hard earned pleasures of course, but the way to grow truly rich is by giving.

Life is a precious gift to us all, how we choose to live it is our gift in return.

Epileptic attacks usually happens between the ages of six months and five years and comes completely unexpectedly in the form of convulsions, peddling movements of the legs, excessive salivation, uncontrolled urination and loss of conscience.

Although the attacks in themselves don’t put a dog’s life at risk, they are in danger of biting their tongues, falling or bumping into things and injuring themselves. If a dog

with epilepsy seems more nervous or restless than usual and walks in circles it could be a sign of an imminent attack.

Root-changing verbs and words Basic Spanish for everyday needs

LAST week we started looking at rootchanging verbs and got going on the first of three groups which comes under the interesting name of ‘e to ie.’ We saw one example of these which was the verb cerrar.

However, before we plough on too much further there is one point I would like to look at in more detail as it provides a basis for all our root-changing work (I’m sounding like a dentist now!)

We know that pronunciation is important, and part of this is the whole matter of speech rhythm. This is what gives a sound or shape to our speech, rather like the rhythm of music. If music didn’t keep to a certain beat it would become meaningless, and the same is true of speech.

Often, even in our own language, we don’t hear every word someone says, but we understand them because we recognise the tone and rhythm of what they have said.

Tone can tell us things like whether we

are being asked a question or not and it also gives us other information including underlying messages in the phrases uttered.

We have all heard someone saying something as apparently innocent as: ‘give that to me’ in ways that really mean: ‘I’d like to help you’ or ‘I’m in a hurry,’ or ‘I think you’re an idiot!’

This is a whole realm of study in itself, and extremely interesting too, but before I get too carried away, what I’m really getting at here is that every sentence, and also every individual word in a sentence, has its own beat or rhythm that makes it comprehensible.

This happens in English, whether we are aware of it or not. Let’s take a word from this article, for ex-

ample: idiot. When we say this word we place the emphasis on the first ‘i,’ like this I-diot. Now try moving the emphasis to the second ‘i’ like this: id-I-ot. Now place the stress on the O, like this ‘idi-Ot.’ I hope you can hear the difference, and haven’t offended your partner whilst you’re engaged in this activity. Maybe it would be best to wait until you’re alone with your cat or dog, I find they don’t tend to take this sort of thing personally.

This ‘stress’ or ‘beat’ issue arises with English words like ‘refuse,’ ‘present,’ ‘record’ or ‘desert.’ Depending on where we put the beat, they change in meaning.

In Spanish words stress is equally crucial for understanding but the difference is that it is controlled by

very specific rules.

On my website I have some videos which go through these rules thoroughly in relation to all words in the language.

However, for our purposes here we can say that in the case of root-changing verbs, it is when the beat of the word falls on the root (eg CERR) that the sound splits from ‘e’ to ‘ie’ (almost as though the pressure of the beat breaks the sound into two). Look again at the conjugation of ‘cerrar’ and you will see what I mean. cierro cierras cierra

cerramos cerrais cierran

The change occurs in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural. In the other two forms (first and second person plural) the beat goes onto the ending, so the root returns to one, rather than a split, sound.

Therefore in our example, ‘cerrAmos,’ and ‘cerrÁIs’ behave exactly as they would if the verb was not rootchanging as the beat, or pressure, is on the endings.

This is a golden rule for all root-changing verbs, so if by any chance you found my explanation a little unclear we will be looking at many more examples, which means that we will be learning to pronounce them all properly and therefore making sense when we speak.

The British-inspired car manufacturer’s ‘Yours Customised’ service allows customers to design and order selected add-ons for their new MINI vehicles.

The current range of personal tweaks include side scuttles, interior decorative strips on the passenger side, LED door sill finishers and LED door projectors.

The customisation service won the ‘Excellence in Business to Customer (B2C)’ category because of its userfriendly online ‘customiser,’ consistent digitalisation and use of innovative production techniques such as 3D printing and laser inscription.

“Innovation and individuality are core values of the MINI brand that customers are especially keen on: MINI

The jury were looking for innovation, user benefit and cost-effectiveness when selecting the award-winners, as well as sustainable impact.

Judges said MINI Yours customised was a “brilliant idea with enormous potential" which takes hands-on configuration well beyond the commonly available choice of colour and fittings.

This is about genuine customisation of the vehicle, and making every vehicle a special, one-off edition.

Best-selling Mazda gets power boost MAZDA’S bestselling roadster is set for an update this summer as a new and more powerful version of the MX-5 hits the market.

A boost to engine power is the headline news for this year’s model among a range of tweaks Mazda made.

Mazda’s masterminds upped the 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine’s revs to 7,500rpm from 6,800rpm, while power increased from 158bhp to 182bhp.

A cheaper 1.5 litre model is also on offer.

The change is said to optimisze MX-5 driver’s ‘Jinba Ittai’ driving experience, a symbiotic relationship between motorist and motor akin to that of a well-acquainted horse and rider. Maximum torque has also been tweaked upwards slightly.

New safety technologies have been added making the Mazda all-the-more suited to city cruising.

And the award-winning KODO-Soul of Motion design is enriched through a darker paint finish for both 16" and 17" alloy wheels, and the availability of a new brown canopy colour for soft-top models.

The 2019 Mazda MX-5 goes on sale throughout Europe from August 2018 onwards.

The firm has yet to announce prices for the new model.

Prices for the 2018 MX-5 ranged between €27,995 and €29,995.

King Edward VIII, a king for just 326 days, was a controversial figure who abdicated on account of his relationship with an American divorcee.

Carp-R-Us ROUND five of the Summer Series was fished much closer to home than last week’s venue, the drainage canal near Mercadona in Guardamar.

Individuals had reported good bags from this stretch recently, but the fishing was very poor with many dry nets.

First was Steve Fell (peg 8) with 3.00kg caught on pole and bread, second COMPETITION: In memory of Peter Collins.

Honour for former member THE Benitachell Bowls Club held a competition last weekend in memory of Peter Collins, a member of long-standing who was described as a perfect bowler and gentleman.

The competition was sponsored by Maria Morawiec of Dragon Insurance, the daughter of Peter who along with Valerie,

Peter ’s wife, was there to present the trophy for the winners and wine and glasses for the runners-up.

There were 64 members of the BBC, who signed up to take part, and the format of the competition was teams of four people playing two rinks games and four pairs games over the period

of two days.

Some superb bowling took place in very warm conditions and the final outcome was the t e a m o f Tr e v o r N e a l e , B r i a n Fenton, Carol Davies, and David Browne triumphed whilst runners-up were Chris Barnsby, Greg Sperring, Mal Chamberlain and Rob Walker.

Montgo grudge match LAST Friday Montgo Golf Society and Pego Golf Society finally went head to head in their eagerly anticipated annual Society Challenge Match. The day was again, kindly sponsored by Oliva Nova with free golf for all and some lovely tapas laid on at the halfway stage.

At 9am 80 golfers commenced play having finally got their heads around the Ryder cup format. They played six holes of four ball better ball, six of pairs Texas scramble and two singles matches over the remaining six holes.

A great day was had by all in the excellent conditions both weather wise and the course itself. As always the result was extremely close with just three points between them. Montgo took the glory this year bringing the tally to three matches each since the competition’s inauguration.

So next year promises to be even more competitive.
