Shootout sentence TWO men in court accused of trying to kill a member of a rival gang in a drugs dealing shootout have each been sentenced to six years in prison.

Alicante’s Provincial Court in Elche heard the defendants travelled to Crevillent’s industrial estate to buy 250 grams of cocaine from three sellers.

Prosecutors claimed the defendants stole a briefcase containing the drugs from the dealers and tried to escape in a car.

A chase then ensued which resulted in the two men getting out of the car and shooting the three sellers’ car. No one was killed but the sound of gunshots panicked residents who called the police.

Officers arrived and placed the defendants under arrest. One of them kicked and punched an officer in a bid to resist.

By Jimmy Grayling A SCOTTISH stag do on the Costa Blanca went amiss after 12 revellers travelled more than 300 kilometres in a taxi before being dumped on an industrial estate.

The men from Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, booked a day playing FootGolf in Alicante as part of their weekend in the sun. Best man Jack Gordon, 25, booked the game for groom-to-be Ryan Murdoch and 10 other pals.

But the group got more than they bargained for after hailing a cab on the Benidorm strip.

“I thought FootGolf would be a good thing to do,” Jack said.

“The complex in Alicante is 40 minutes in a taxi tops from Benidorm.”

Ryan and some of the other men had already jumped in the first taxi and were on the road, leaving Jack, Ross Campbell, David Storie and Drew Patterson in the second.

The caper came after fellow reveller Colin was hospitalised after slicing open his foot while trying to climb into their hotel fridge.

And after arriving at FootGolf the party ended up being chased around the complex by a golf cart with member of staff Miguel at the wheel.

PEDRO SANCHEZ: Is sworn in as president of the government.

IN last week’s RTN, I looked at the situation in Italy and Spain and in just a few days, things changed dramatically seeing the ousting of Mariano Rajoy and the appointment of Pedro Sanchez as Spain’s leader.

The old, supposedly Chinese, proverb of ‘Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true’ could well apply to ‘Mr Handsome’ as the new Prime Minister is known, as he has had to choose a series of interesting bedfellows in order to take over the reins of power.

He now has to rely on the somewhat erratic Podemos party under the supposed ‘pupp e t ’ o f I r a n a n d Ve n e z u e l a , Pablo Iglesias as well as the Catalan Separatist parties (when PSOE opposes independence).

In fairness to Mr Sanchez, he had to quit as leader of the party a year ago because he accused Mr Rajoy’s Partido Popular of corruption and having

returned to lead the party, his words appears to have come true and he has had the PP kicked out of government.

Time will be of the essence as if he can talk to the Catalan Separatists and come to some form of negotiated agreement that goes further than the old government but does not break up the country, then he could, on a tide of approval, call a new election as he has even fewer guaranteed votes in the Cortes than did Mr Rajoy.

Whilst Spain at least has a new lease of political life, things are not exactly rosy over in Britain with Brexit.

The EU chief negotiator Barnier made a very telling statement in an interview saying that basically, he is fed up with Britain and the negotiations as he believes that Britain wants to leave, so effectively stop asking for concessions and just leave!

There seems to be no likeli-

hood of an acceptable agreement for the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic and now the Labour party has reinforced its support for a United Ireland (subject to approval of the electorate) and also wants to see new laws concerning abortion in Ulster.

Let us not forget that the

Conservatives are a minority government, depending upon the support of the Democratic Unionist Party which is a conservative, protestant party which is most focused upon Ulster remaining part of the United Kingdom.

fighting between pro and still anti-Brexiteers, there is a growing call for a second referendum which is backed by Billionaire George Soros, known as ‘The Man Who Broke the Bank of England’ as he made a billion dollars out of Black Wednesday and perhaps surp r i s i n g l y, s o m e 1 6 L o n d o n based Labour MPs are supporting Vince Cable, also calling for another bite of the cherry.

Most ironic news of the week is that Lord Lawson (former Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer), a major promoter of Brexit has decide that he would rather live in France and is applying for a new resident’s permit and Jacob Rees-Mogg who says he doesn’t want to be next prime minister but is antiRussian has now been revealed as owning an investment company that earns large amounts of profits from supporting Russian industry.

The one bright bit of news is that Fabian Picardo, socialist Chief Minister of Gibraltar hopes that the new Spanish government will be more amicable and understanding than the last.

Improved beach access for all

ACCESSIBLE: Torrevieja’s beaches have had new wooden access points installed.

THANKS to work carried out by the Department for Beaches, Torrevieja now has more than 150 metres of new wooden access points on three of the city’s beaches.

The announcement was made by Councillor Javier

Manzanares, who said that the extra points had been installed in La Mata, Playa Los Naufragos, and Playa El Acequion.

Councillor Manzanares said: “It is something we have been working on for a number of weeks and we have now com-

pleted one of many phases as we want to cover more beaches. It is all part of the commitment we’re fulfilling to help everyone, including those with mobility issues and our elderly population, gain better and safer access to our areas.”

20,000 ‘fake’ bottles of wine on sale BAD TASTE: High quality wine didn’t live up to expectations.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers based in San Vicente del Raspeig are investigating two people in Elche, suspected of selling wine that was not suitable for drinking.

The couple, a 73-yearold man and a 51-year-old woman, both Spanish, are alleged to have stored and prepared for sale online a total of 20,000 bottles of wine that were discovered in an underground vehicle repair workshop.

The investigation was opened by the Guardia Civil following an individual complaint from someone who had purchased 10,000 bottles of wine from a well-known wine merchant in Yecla (Murcia).

It was when he opened a number of the bottles and began to taste them that the usual high quality wine was so bad that

he decided to return them. However, and according to a report in the Spanish media, he was only able to get back two-thirds of his €6,500 investment.

Analysis of the wine revealed that it didn’t come from the Murcia merchant and in addition to the poor taste there were also anomalies in the labelling, batch number etc.

Guardia Civil investigators were able to discover the identities of those allegedly behind the scam thanks to looking at the website from which the wine was sold, and ultimately led them to the storeroom in Elche which had no connection to the production of the product whatsoever.

Where the wine came from that filled the many thousands of bottles is still being investigated.

Summer school activities launched R E G I S T R AT I O N t o a t t e n d t h e s u m m e r schools in Orihuela is now open, and the council is offering 600 subsidised places for children between three and 12 years old.

Launching this year’s programme, Councillor Begoña Cuartero said: “Several schools will participate during the months of June, July and August, in order to allow family life to continue without too much disruption.”

The schools taking part in the scheme are CEIP Miguel Hernandez, CEIP Virgen de la Puerta, CEIP Fernando de Loaces and CEIP Villar Palasi in Orihuela city itself.

In addition, and provided there is sufficient interest, a number of villages Hurchillo, La Aparecida, La Matanza, La Murada, Molins, Rincon de Bonanza, San Bart o l o m e a n d To r r e m e n d o - w i l l a l s o o f f e r places. For the Orihuela Costa, summer schools will take place in the CEIP Playas de Orihuela and Los Dolses.

Apart from providing extra education, sporting and cultural activities the classes aim to be fun and encourage friendship, integration and equality between all genders.

Those living in Orihuela that wish to enrol can do so via the website at www.orivera no.es The cost is €30 for two weeks or €60 a month.

City hospital plans major expansion ACCORDING to a report in the Spanish media, the Alicante General Hospital is planning to expand its Accident and Emergency Department and also increase the number of beds available across the hospital.

The central Department of Health will be investing around €5.5 million in reforming parts of the building that include an extra 2,000m of general and paediatric emergency services, in an area that has become obsolete and too small for the demand placed on it.

Hospital managers have said that the plans for the expansion have been prepared and are being presented to the town hall for their permission. Once granted, the tender for the work will be put out in the public domain.

The project will see an increase in the number of ‘boxes’ in A&E from 25 to 40 - the areas where people are treated that are unlikely to be admitted - and the number of beds in observation will increase from the current 13 to 20.

More than 500 people are attended to in A&E on a daily basis, and the last major reforms to that department were carried out in 1991.

AN 86- year-old woman has been found dead in her Elche home in an advanced state of decomposition. According to the emergency service, she is b e l i e ve d to h ave b e e n d e a d fo r a l m o s t s e ve n months.

This case is almost a mirror image of another i n Va l e n c i a a fe w d ay s earlier when a mummified cor pse of a woman w a s fo u n d , b e l i e ve d to have been dead for four years.

GUARDIA CIVIL’S traffic division not only help people who have problems or are involved in accidents, they also come to the aid of animals when required.

This was the case recently w h e n t h e y m a n a g e d to re s cue an eagle owl that had been injured on the A-7 Alicante-Murcia motorway in Elche.

The officers were called to the scene by concerned drivers who’d spotted the bird in a distressed state that had appare n t l y b e e n h i t b y a v e h i c l e a n d s u f fe re d a b ro k e n wing.

Urgent appeal for animal adopters FOLLOWING an operation carried out by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja which involved them seizing a number of animals, an urgent appeal has been made for people to adopt some of those taken in.

The animals were found roaming around close to a finca in the Torrevieja urbanisation of El Limonar, among others that were discovered during the exercise which arrested 30 members of an alleged criminal gang.

According to a report in the Spanish media, Councillor Carmen Morate said that the court had asked the town hall to look for new homes for the animals, but with the local shelter already housing 35 animals there isn’t enough space to accommodate them all.

Court upholds hotel bill sentence

by Ray Chadwick PROVINCIAL Court authorities in Murcia have confirmed the nine-month sentence handed down to a client who left a hotel without paying a bill.

The Criminal Court in Cartagena found the man guilty last October following an incident that dates back to 2013 after he stayed at a hotel in La Man-

ga del Mar Menor and, after enjoying a 10-night stay, left an unpaid bill of just over €800.

When challenged at the time, the man said that he believed his accommodation was going to be paid by a man whom he’d met on the beach during his stay. When asked for his name, he could only say that “he was called A... or something like that.”

The court completely dismissed his version of events as

it was proved that is was the defendant himself who reserved not only his room, but also another in which two people stayed overnight.

His case was also rejected as there is documentary evidence to show that he arrived at the hotel on February 15, 2013 and signed for the room on a room-only basis for four days.

He then extended the reservation for both rooms until February 23.

Help for single parents RAFAL’S Town Council has passed a motion at a recent Extraordinary plenary council meeting to reduce the annual council tax (IBI) by 50 per cent for single-parent families. Announcing the measure, Councillor Silvia Pastor, said that “this measure aims to contribute to improving the quality of life to single-parent families.” The initiative extends to single-parent families, a similar scheme that has previously been available to larger families.

by Glenn Scott TWO members of the Local Police based in Pilar de la Horadada have being diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), three months after they allegedly be-

came infected.

The incident unfolded back in January this year when four officers were involved in arresting an Algerian national in the main square of Pilar. During the arrest and subsequent scuffle, the man scratched one of the policemen and also coughed in the faces of others.

It was later discovered that the detainee suffered from TB. According to reports in the Spanish media, the authorities learned within a few hours of the infected man being held that he had TB, as it appeared on a police database. However, it’s alleged that protocols were not followed at the time and it wasn’t until almost three months later, on March 28,

that after several verbal and written requests from the police officers they were tested.

It was at this point two of the four men discovered they’d been infected with the disease.

Both men remain in their posts as doctors have said that even though they are carrying the disease, they are not contagious and have begun a sixmonth treatment period.

In defence of the suggestions that the correct protocol wasn’t followed, Councillor Jose Tomas Saura said the police officers “do not have tuberculosis and are only carriers of it. In fact, their condition may not even be related to the incident in January.”

ACCORDING to figures announced by the Murcia Region’s defence delegate, Ignacio Marti Scharfaussen, the number of people from the autonomous community registering to join the Spanish Armed Forces was 2,700.

This is out of a country-wide total of 57,772 who looked to gain admission in the army or the navy, and the announcement was made on the occasion of Armed Forces Day. In addition to the permanent jobs applied for, more than 2,244 candidates were seeking to become one of only 100 new voluntary reservists.

FALLEN: The porch to the Hotel Fontana collapsed to the ground.

LOCAL people in Torrevieja suffered a shock at the weekend when the front entrance porch of the Hotel Fontana in the centre of the city collapsed without warning.

Fortunately at the time, there was nobody entering or leaving the popular hotel which only a couple of years ago had undergone a complete refurbishment.

The incident happened around 9pm on the Calle Rambla Juan Mateo and there was no immediate indication as to what caused the collapse. Witnesses and guests in the hotel reported a loud crashing noise which brought many people onto their balconies and into the street from nearby apartments and bars.

As a precautionary measure, the emergency services took the decision to evacuate five rooms on each of the first and second floors.

Storms... good news and bad THE recent storms that hit the Murcia Region have been ‘very beneficial’ to the basin of the River Segura.

Despite causing damage and disruption - that included a number of landslides - on the road between Socovos and Benizar and floods in the middle of Caravaca and Elche, the rainfall has stopped the severe drought conditions in the area and significantly increased the previously dangerous levels of the reservoirs.

School-run teenager injured INCREASE: Torrevieja’s firefighters called out 200 times in early 2018.

TORREVIEJA’S fire station has taken on an additional 20 firefighters and has formally launched the heliport.

This takes the number of firefighters from 36 to 56 and will enable this location to cover not only the city of Torrevieja, but also neighbouring Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada.

The extra personnel will begin their shifts on June 19,

enabling a total of 11 firefighters to be on duty at once although the shift can operate with a minimum of eight.

Before this increase, some shifts saw just six firefighters available.

In addition, the reinforcements planned for Pilar de la Horadada will depend on the rota systems originating in Torrevieja and not Orihuela which is currently the case.

The 12-hour shifts in Pilar tend to be carried out by firefighters doing overtime.

Between Januar y 1 and April 30, there have been more than 200 occasions when the fire brigade of Torrevieja were called out, 187 were for incidents within the city itself, with the remainder in Los Montesinos, San Miguel and Pilar de la Horadada.

A TEENAGER has been injured after suffering an accident in Orihuela.

According to a number of witnesses, the 13-year-old was run over by a car on a pedestrian crossing on Camino Viejo de Callosa on his way to the IES Gabriel Miro School.

It is understood that the impact was so strong that the car’s front windscreen was broken by the teenager’s head after they were thrown onto the bonnet.

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before transferring them to the Vega Baja Hospital with a severe head injury and suffering from shock.

ALMORADI Town Council has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of getting vaccinated with the aim of eradicating diseases that have re-emerged, such as measles.

Since 2011, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has produced a schedule of vaccines lasting from birth until 14 years old, but despite the benefits many parents and mothers refuse or forget to comply with it, despite it being a free service.

MOTORWAY USE: There has been an increase in the use of toll roads.

by Darren Parmenter THE growing economic recovery across Spain has had a positive effect on the use of the toll roads in the Alicante Province.

This is according to the Ministry of Works who have announced that the roads in question see an average daily use of 46,329 vehicles, of which 3,395 are trucks and lorries. The data shows that more people are commuting to work using their cars, the movement of goods is up, and tourism is on the increase... all factors contributing to the extra motorway use.

The extra tolls have enabled the controlling companies to recover some of the users they lost

when the financial crisis hit Spain. Since it hit rock-bottom in 2013, the volume of traffic on these motorways has already increased by 19 per cent in Alicante Province and includes the AP-7 between Alicante and Valencia, the A-7 between Alicante and Cartagena and the Alicante ringroad, although the latter is now state controlled after the original controller became bankrupt.

The daily figure is 7,439 more than registered at the lowest point five years ago, but is still 12,000 short of the heydays of 2007 with an average daily use of 58,248 vehicles... the highest ever recorded for the toll roads.

MY conversation at the weekend with a 60-something Brit, on his first visit to Spain, was going swimmingly well until he dropped two words into the conversation guaranteed to send my blood pressure into the stratosphere: ‘gateway drug.’

He’d just told me that, in the two days he’d been in Benidorm, his nostrils had been assailed by the ‘stench’ of cannabis smoke in at least four different locations, and he thought the police ought to ‘get their bloody fingers out’ and come down hard on dope smokers.

Through gritted teeth I explained to him that Spain had decriminalised cannabis for personal consumption, and that a 2013 report published by The Local showed that more Spaniards were using the drug than smoking cigarettes. Furthermore, Spain had overtaken the Netherlands as a cannabis smoking nation and is third in the world behind Iceland and the US. “Well that’s just terrible,” he huffed. “Don’t the Spanish realise

FIREFIGHTERS were called out to the A-7 motorway after a lorry overturned and burst into flames near Elche yesterday (Thursday) morning.

Emergency services said the vehicle, which was carrying a shipment of melons and driving towards Alicante, tipped over near the Elche-Aspe junction and skidded across the road for several metres.

A fire then began which engulfed the trailer and cabin, the cause of which remains unknown.

The motorway was closed in both directions while firefighters tackled the blaze. It was partially reopened hours later, with traffic reportedly backed up for kilometres as a result of the closure.

Emergency services said there were no injuries caused by the fire. The two people travelling in the lorry were able to get out of the cab and escape the flames.

The accident was the second one of the day on the A-7.

Two vehicles crashed into one another on the motorway at the University of Elche junction, also caused delays.

Three held TWO women and one man have been arrested in connection with a drugs dealing and trafficking probe in Redovan.

The detainees, aged 27, 31 and 45 and all from the same family, were held by Guardia Civil officers following police raids on two homes in the town.

Officers claimed they seized several quantities of cocaine in the raids. Those arrested have appeared before a court which has charged them and bailed them ahead of their trial.

I asked. He looked aghast. “I don’t smoke dope. In fact I don’t smoke at all, so why would I take drugs?” To that I replied: “But you have in front of you one of the most addictive drugs on the planet, alcohol, and you’re now on your third gin and tonic. If one were to take your ‘gateway drug’ theory to its logical conclusion, you’d be in an alley somewhere with a needle in your arm.”

I then pointed out that, in 2014, the US magazine Psychology Today reported that the science shows ‘overwhelmingly that for most people marihuana is not a gateway drug and that, in fact, most drug use begins with alcohol and nicotine.’

I then contrasted the behaviour of young Spaniards with that of Brits in the same age group. Here it is incredibly rare to see Spanish youngsters abusing, or even drinking alcohol, but each time I return to the UK I see drunkenness and booze-induced aggression EVERYWHERE. In 2015 the Global Drug Survey, an online survey of 100,000

In August 2017 The Independent reported that the UK government was spending £1.6 billion a year on an anti-drugs policy, and it quoted Martin Powell, the head of campaigns at the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, as saying that this strategy has “little effect on street prices or availability.

All the while fuelling drug market violence, and harming the young and vulnerable through criminalising them.

“And for what? Drug use hasn’t fallen for eight years. More importantly, drug deaths have hit record levels for four years in a row. This proves the ongoing commitment to drug war enforcement is not about new evidence it is serving other political and ideological interests. It’s truly scandalous that the poor and vulnerable are dying as a result. The government are responsible, and must be called to account.”

He is absolutely correct, but I’ve given up hope of ever seeing a British government doing the right thing in regard to safeguarding it citizens

Brave mum leads petition presentation

by Glenn Scott THE mother of young Kai, the eight-year-old boy who died in April after a freak collision with another young boy on a beach when playing football has presented a petition to the Orihuela Town Hall.

She joined local residents and representatives from as-

sociations based on the Orihuela Costa who handed in a petition of more than 2,200 signatures calling for the long-delayed emergency centre for the coast to be completed.

The incident shocked many people at the time when it

took close to 40 minutes for an ambulance equipped with the necessary life-saving apparatus to arrive at the scene of the accident at Cala Bosque.

Kai’s mum bravely decided to lead the petition for the centre to be finished with the

aim of improving the response times for any emergencies, and so nobody else will have to go through what she and her family and friends did with her young son.

The emergency centre - located close to Molino Blanco in La Zenia - began its con-

The petition has been up and running since May 14 and will continue to attract signatures until June 22.

Who wears short-shorts?

El lost lady AN elderly woman has been seen by a number of startled passers-by as she walked along an outside ledge of the El Corte Ingles department store in Murcia.

According to witnesses, the woman seemed disorientated although seemed to

be quite calm as she walked along the first floor of the building on the Avenida de la Libertad.

It’s understood she made her way to that level after entering an area that is used to unload the delivery vehicles.

A T E A C H E R a t t h e I E S Ve g a Baja School in Callosa de Segura has prevented a student from attending class because, in his opinion, his shorts were... too short.

According to a report in the Spanish media, the decision was ‘unilaterally’ taken by the teacher based on their interpretation of the school regulations.

These lay down guidelines on a number of issues that include clothing and personal hygiene and that both students and teachers are expected to observe. However, the guidelines approved by the School Board composed of parents and teachers - say nothing about wearing short trousers or otherwise.

The issue first came to light a

few weeks ago when a number of students went to speak with the board and ask for some clarification as to what kinds of trousers can be worn, particularly in the hotter weather.

A spokesperson said: “They came to see me in my office and I gave them some examples to think about. Is it right to go to the beach with long trousers?

Should you do PE in highheels? The most important thing is for students to consider for themselves what is appropriate and not for us to impose strict rules.”

After the latest incident, the board has asked teachers not to stop people wearing shorts and insist that it was an isolated event that won’t happen again.

A submarine in any language hours-a-day and has been provided at a cost of €2,783.

The 30 audio guides produced for the maritime attractions contain some very detailed information, and in their case released in nine languages: English, French, Ger man, Russian, Dutch, Nor we g i an, Swedish, Finnish and Spanish and made according to the numbers of tourists that visit the facilities. At present, a contract is being processed for tender to renew and improve the overall tourist information signage in Torrevieja, and will take the municipality’s total investment to €70,000.

Councillor Victor Ferrandez announced that tourists will be able to listen to audio guides when they go around the S-61 submarine and other floating museums, and is part of a major investment in modern tourist information installed in the municipality.

This includes a touch screen in La Mata from which users can get a range of information about the day-to-day activities in the municipality, local events etc, and is available in English, French, German and Spanish.

MORE than 30 doctors have chosen Torrevieja Hospital to complete their speciality studies. One of the reasons cited for this choice is to get as much experience as possible with foreign patients that account for almost half that are treated there.

LAST week was a very special day for the Torrevieja AFA when they officially took delivery of their brand new minibus to cater for the needs of their patients. The Renault Master minibus was the direct result of fundraising by many outlets within the Torrevieja regions, Torrevieja U3A being one of the main contributors with their recent donation of €4,000 to the AFA organisers. Vega Baja fiesta security plans ALMORADI’S Town Council has held a security meeting to discuss the needs of the municipality for this year’s local fiestas which will include ensuring that there are more police officers on duty.

There are two main areas that were discussed. Firstly, plans to cut down on the amount of alcohol consumption among children for which, in addition to the Local Police, a dedicated Guardia Civil unit will be deployed. The second area is to prevent cases of gender violence.

Other aspects of Vega Baja security was discussed with representatives of Rojales, Almoradi, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Formentera, San Fulgencio and Guardamar.

MARKET research company Kantar Worldpanel have released their 2018 ‘brand footprint ranking,’ revealing the top 10 grocery products bought by customers in Spain.

Of these, six are Spanish brands, two French, one Mexican and one from the United States - although the jury has long been out whether this, too, was originally created in Spain.

It will be of no surprise to anyone that the number one brand appearing in Spanish residents’ grocery baskets is Coca-Cola, given that it is the most famous in the world and accounting for 137.6 million ‘consumer reach points’ (CRPs). This is defined as how many times an item is purchased, irrespective of how many people buy it and at what frequency.

At any one time, 76.1 per cent of households in Spain will have at least one product manufactured by Coca-Cola in its fridge or cupboard.

Coca-Cola leads the list, followed by Colgate, for toothpaste, and Maggi for soups.

El Pozo ham and processed meat, packaged in Murcia, is the second-most popular grocery brand in Spain, reaching 130.9 million consumers and found in 78.5 per cent of households across the country.

Of the top 50 most popular brands in Spain, 94 per cent are on sale in the country’s three largest supermarket chains, Mercadona, Carrefour and Día.

Metal detector enthusiasts tramp the fields in all weathers hoping for the bleep that may bring them a golden hoard in-

A few have been hugely lucky, or you might say, recompensed well for persistence. The prime example was that of archaeologist, Howard Carter. On virtually the last day before giving up trying to find the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in November 1922, after years of searching, a limestone step is uncovered, then another below it, then another... ultimate-

ly leading to Carter’s ‘aha’ day, “everywhere the glint of gold, the most wonderful day of my life” he said. The thrill of the chase, that’s what it is, that little feeling in the pit of your stomach that says, ‘don’t stop, keep going.’

I always felt these vibrations if I came across a particularly unusual or unique coin.

John A Long of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, had, what he called ‘one of those sublime eureka moments that scientists get once in a lifetime … if they are lucky.’

He was examining a 375-million-year-old fossil of a fish from NW Australia when he suddenly realised that the collection of little bones in its stomach was not the remains of its last meal, as had always been supposed, but a tiny embryo, even the fossilised umbilical cord was visible. What was so remarkable was he had discovered live birth in fish through copulation some 25 million years earlier than previously known. In effect, he had discovered sex!

All the proceeds go to the AECC Early Detection Cancer Charity. The total amount raised is still to be calculated as there is sponsorship money outstanding. The organisers would like to thank everyone who donated so generously and supported the event.

THE Pink Ladies and Panthers recently held their 5km walk for life. The Walk for Life event started and finished at Playa Flamenca Promenade.

Over 400 people took part in the walk and many more arrived later to enjoy an afternoon of great entertainment. The event was hosted by Simon Morton and Stevie Spit. All the artists involved gave their time for free, and included Paul Michael, Johnny Lee, Cindy Fitzpatrick, and Janelle and Samantha Curtis.

There were lots of activities on the day, including a tombola for children and adults, AECC merchandise was for sale and the Pink Ladies were available to make appointments for mammogram, smear, prostate, colon and skin cancer tests.

The pursuit of happiness

WHAT constitutes true happiness?

We have been slowly but methodically indoctrinated over the last 50 years, into believing that happiness is dependent on material wealth.

The belief that it is essential to own our own homes and fill them with the trappings of 21st century technology and state of the art comfort. To have a smart new car in the garage and undertake exotic holidays in locations that not long ago, were just names on a map.

Smart phones, iPads and gadgets, are all used as badges of honour that are must-have items and have become part of our culture.

If we can believe what we read, then we are all much better off than we were a decade ago and infinitely more wealthy than our parents.

On the face of it this is good news, but only if we are convinced that this comparative wealth is what it takes to bring contentment.

But is our country a happier more joyful place because of prosperity, and do we as citizens feel fulfilled and optimistic about the future?

It’s a rhetorical question for those of a certain age, because we are in a position to contrast today’s world with that of half a century ago.

Raising funds for worthy causes Crescendo International Choir

CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR members recently entertained residents of Casa Verde in Almoradi.

Although this particular concert was not a fundraiser, residents seemed to enjoy listening to it. In particular, the Spanish songs El Vito and Si Tu Me Dices Ven, with some people singing along with the choir. The residents also liked the Dutch song, Aan de Amsterdamse Grachten.

The choir also recently performed a fundraising concert at the Casa de Cultura in Benijofar. In addition to the songs already noted, there were many other songs including the Brazilian tune Balaio and The Girl from Ipanema. A solo performance was also offered by John Cloney.

Concert attendees, many of whom were Dutch, donated more than €200 following the concert. This money was given to Benijofar Social Services to buy non-perishable food items for about 25 needy individuals and fami-

When discussing this, the Princess and I instantly agreed on what for us was the happiest time of our lives.

We both had seasonal jobs in restau-

rants in the pretty little Cornish town of Looe. This meant long hours for modest pay, albeit with plenty of good food thrown in.

We did not own a car, so on our one day a week off we would take the train or bus and visit other parts of the county. Our rented flat was a small one bedroom affair having a bathroom that was almost bigger than the lounge; with the whole set in a delightful position above the estuary and part of a house called appropriately: ‘The Hazard.’

When we had a rare evening to ourselves, we would spend the time playing cards and listening to music on our small transistor radio. We did not watch TV and there was no chance of being disturbed by the telephone - we had neither.

We laughed a lot, actually enjoyed our work and we indulged in silly but ultimately memorable pastimes like candlelit late nights in our prodigious bath, eating fresh cream doughnuts that would otherwise, as the food and beverage laws prescribed, have been thrown away at the end of the day.

We have never been happier.

I have been accused of living in the past, but when the world of the past was demonstrably better than the present in so many ways, I make no apologies.

Leo. The Sun touches on Pluto bringing unnecessary complication but a necessary delay in proceedings this week. Aquarius. Time was when you would have taken recent events with a pinch of salt, but nothing has prepared you for what has happened. Anyone who really loved you would never think of treating you this way, and hough this could be the best time to just walk away, it is an ebullient and resolute Pluto in cahoots with Mercury that sends out a strong message that you are not to be messed with!

Virgo. The Mercury sextile with Ceres brings you back to your old routine once again.

Plans others have had for you just haven’t worked out, and whilst they eat humble pie you have the impetus to take hold of the reins once more and bring in all those innovations that will make such a difference to that which comes next. Ceres regulates and is calling time.

Pisces. Now the Sun fades on a poignant assignation with Neptune, it is not too late to change your mind. A recent offer was genuine and though you are not in the right frame of mind, such an offer was made with good intention. Take a rain check, and above all keep all options open for the future. Basic Spanish for everyday needs

NO doubt you all romped through the translations that you had to do for homework, but just so you can prove to yourselves that you were right, here are the answers: Mi marido lee el periódico todos los días.

My husband reads the newspaper every day.

Mi hijo sale los sábados por la noche.

My son goes out on Saturday nights. ¿A qué hora coméis normalmente?

What time do you usually have lunch? (more than one you).

Los chicos cocinan cuando están en el campo.

The young people cook when they are in the countryside.

No oigo mi móvil.

I can’t hear my mobile phone. ¿Escribes en español y en inglés?

Do you write in Spanish and English?

No hago las camas siempre.

I don’t always make the beds.

Aprendo poco a poco.

I learn little by little.

Abrimos la tienda a las 9 de la mañana.

We open the shop at 9am. ¿Dónde vivís?

Where do you live? (more than one you).

Answers to translations and explanations I like these kinds of translations because they bring up all sorts of issues and help correct those little mistakes that we tend to make. The main point, of course, is to practise our verbs in different forms in the present tense. They are all standard verbs, as we have been studying, and there are examples of first, second and third persons singular and plural endings of the three different groups (-ar, -er and -ir).

Here are some of the other things you might also have questioned as you’ve done them, or read my answers. In number one, it is also possible to express every day, or each day, as ‘cada día,’ although ‘todos los días’ is a little more common.

In number two notice that when we combine a day and time of day in Spanish we do this with the word ‘por,’ whilst ‘on’ is replaced by the definite article ‘the,’ in this case ‘los.’

Number three might have caught out one or two of you and yes, you are quite right, ‘comer’ does mean to eat, but it is also used to mean ‘to have lunch.’ In this sentence which is clearly enquiring about someone’s daily routine ‘to have lunch’ is the more logi-

cal translation.

In number 4 the word ‘chicos’ could have various translations.

We don’t know if it refers to males only as it could also refer to a mixture of males and females. We could also perhaps say ‘lads,’ ‘kids,’ or ‘boys.’ This is where the discretion of the translator comes into play.

Number 5 is interesting - in Spanish we say the equivalent of ‘I don’t hear’ whereas in English we would always say ‘I can’t hear.’

Hence the translation offers what we would normally say in English.

Number 6 is the only one I can’t think of anything particular to say about (how unusual, I know)… except (!) please notice that, unlike in English, the languages ‘español’ and ‘inglés’ do not have capital letters, as with the same words referring to nationalities.

Number 7 - er… well… this isn’t me by the way, and number 8 - a good phrase to say while you are out and about trying out your Spanish. (I’m beginning to sound like Julie Andrews singing ‘Doh a deer…’)

Number 9 gives us a variation on our usu-

a l ‘por l a mañana,’ ‘por la tarde.’ When we say a specific time in the morning we use ‘de’ instead of ‘por’ as in ‘a las seis de a tarde.’

There is no point in asking why this is, it just is, and believe me English is just as complicated where these little words are concerned.

Number 10 - a standard sort of sentence that can be said to people you are chatting to when there’s more than one of them.

Don’t forget that the accent goes on the second ‘Í’ and that is the part of the verb that is emphasised.

My goodness me, I’ve used the whole article up on the homework. I sincerely hope it has been useful and also encouraging. Next week’s article will be about root-changing verbs, I promise.

Specialist help too far away MORE than 10 million children in America live too far from specialist paediatric anaesthesiologists if they need emergency surgery.

These anaesthesiologists specialise in sedating and monitoring children during surgery and small children needing more serious medical care should be treated by these paediatric specialists according to new guidelines from the American College of Surgeons.

However, millions live in rural areas of the country and are more than 50 miles away from such doctors, leaving families faced with the choice of travelling long distances or using the services of more local general anaesthesiologists.

According to records, there are just over 4,000 paediatric anaesthesiologists in the US.

Have a dental check carried out before scuba-diving COULD scuba-diving be damaging your teeth?

It may be a favoured holiday pastime for many, but a

study has found that around four in 10 people who dive suffer dental problems afterwards such as jaw

pain and broken fillers.

This is believed to be caused by the fluctuations in pressure under water that can lead to air pockets in the roots

of teeth causing a condition known as ‘tooth squeeze.’ This can become painful for those with cavities, broken or temporary fillings or an abscess. This, combined with some divers clenching their teeth against the mouthpiece can cause damage especially as in many cases the regulator is not the correct size for a diver.

The study looked at the more inexperienced who dive for recreational fun rather than professionals or those who do it for a living.

The report, published in the British Dental Journal, concluded that recreational divers should consider consulting their dentist before scuba-diving.

SCUBA-DIVING: Many people suffer dental problems.

Gossip is good OK ladies, admit it, we all like a good gossip right? Well feel guilty about it no longer as a study claims that sharing gossip can actually be good for you.

A study carried out by researchers at the University of Pavia in Italy studied the effects of gossip on 22 women.

They found that gossip can be good as it releases oxytocin, the so-called love hormone.

More oxytocin was released from gossip compared to normal conversations and this hormone helps bring people closer together and gives a feeling of closeness.

Oxytocin is naturally released in the blood and brains of humans and other mammals, during social and sexual behaviours. It is also produced during labour by women to help with the baby bonding process.

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com OCCASIONALLY, a birthday crops up to give one pause for thought and for me May 7 was no exception. The date is just a year short of the centenary of the birth of Eva Peron (1919 1952), a figure who has frustrated left and right since she inspired belief in the power of women worldwide.

When after the Second World War the United Nations (UN) imposed a trade embargo on Francoist Spain in an attempt to starve it into submission, Juan Peron’s Argentine government came to Spain’s aid. Vital foods and medicines got through.

Spain survived the blockade that targeted not so much the governing power but the people of Spain. For this reason, Eva Peron is still a revered icon for many in Spain.

In June 1947, Eva travelled to Spain at the invitation of President Francisco Franco (1892 1975). Argentina was the only

nation that maintained a diplomatic relationship with Spain following the Second World War and offered aid to the trade embargoed country.

Upon her arrival in Madrid, Eva was welcomed by more than three million people. After 15 days in Spain, Eva went on to tour Italy, Portugal, France, and Switzerland. After becoming well-known in Europe, Eva Perón also featured on the cover of Time magazine in July 1947.

Eva Perón, the wife of Argentine president Juan Perón, was first lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952. Eva Perón, fondly called ‘Evita’ by many, played a major role in her husband’s administration.

She is widely remembered for her efforts to help the poor and for her role in getting women the vote. Eva Perón was adored by the multi-ethnic peoples of Argentina but her government’s anti-Stalinist stance hardly endeared her to the liberal-left.

This was their problem rather than hers for Evita symbolised everything the left claimed to revere. It is difficult to imagine a more humble background than

that of the woman who was to become a fabulous success in her own right long before she met her future husband.

In scanning Eva’s biography one is impressed by the impact made by this dirt-poor daughter of an impoverished single mother before her sad death from cancer when just 33 years of age.

A clue lies in the words of a woman who achieved far more in a shorter period of time than did darling of the left, Spanish Republican pro-Stalinist firebrand Dolores Ibarruri.

When interviewed, the woman who inspired women whatever their political views, said, “One cannot accomplish anything without fanaticism.”

Eva’s socialist credentials were based on her faith in the power of the people if inspired, mentored and brought to believe in themselves.

“There is nothing stronger than a town. All it takes is to be fair, free and sovereign.”

Therein lays the paradox of faux socialism and real socialism; which should give the illiberal-left pause for thought.

A FERRARI built in 1963 has sold for a record €59 million.

Just 36 were built between 1962 and 1964, and an American businessman has snapped up this version, which won the Tour de France motor race in 1964.

While it has been based in Germany for many years, it is often shown off and driven at international events.

James Cottingham of Hertfordshire-based DK Engineering which restored the car in the 1990s, said: “It has never had a big accident.

This is one of the best 250 GTOs in existence in terms of history and originality.

“It won the Tour de France Automobile - a race last held in 1986 -

Research compared the amount of germs found in a car with those found on common office items, and the results were alarming.

Conducted by Euro Car Parts, the study found that three of the five cars tested contained more bacteria than the inside of a bin lid.

Swabbing the steering, gear stick, dashboard controls and door handle, the vehicle interiors also contained more germs than a kitchen bench top and sink.

Only two of the cars had levels of contamination deemed ‘safe,’ with one passing as ‘OK’ and two marked ‘not safe’ or ‘extremely dirty.’

KOREAN CLASS: Hyundai combines substance with style.

Hyundai says buy buy buy DRIVERS could soon be able to buy a coffee or order their dinner while on the road.

Korean manufacturer Hyundai, is working on new connected car technology that will allow motorists to pay for a range of services straight from their vehicle.

Developed in partnership with software company Xevo, the technology is being designed to simplify daily purchases for drivers to make.

Current connected software in some luxury motors already allows the driver to track down contact details of restaurants or hotels, but Hyundai’s new developments promise to add something extra.

The technology will allegedly store the driver’s card

details within the on-board computer, allowing purchases to be made online.

However, it is still in its early stages and the software will need to take into account security risks and driving laws.

The system would need to be voice activated to avoid potential distracted driving charges if users were to operate it on the road.

It will also need to develop data protection methods to keep the owner’s payment details secure.

Hyundai’s north American arm is currently in charge of the project, but it could well be replicated in the UK, if successful.

Manish Mehrotra, Director of Connected Operations at Hyundai Motor America, said:

“Once our owners experience placing a to-go order using their vehicle’s touchscreen and seamlessly routing to the location, we know they’re going to love it.

“Offering easy-to-use payment options as part of navigation will simplify the driving experience and maximise time spent with eyes on the road.”

SAMM racing THE Sailing Association Mar Menor had a good turnout recently of 15 competitors and 10 boats.

The winds were quite light, for the start of the first race.

No incidents occurred and the race was a case of follow my leader. The Topaz led from the start, followed by the Hartley, a Laser 2000, a Laser Radial, the second Laser 2000, a Quba and a Deltania with the two Sailfish bringing up the rear. This order remained unchanged for most of the race. The Topaz was the winner on corrected time.

The second race had more wind and both the Laser 2000’s and the Hartley soon pulled away. But on the second lap the wind shifted and whilst they had been forced on a long tack both the Quba and Laser Radial got a ride straight to the first buoy.

This produced one of the closest results for many weeks once the handicaps were applied. The Topaz again was first but the following four boats were separated by just 10, 74, two, and six seconds.

For the first time in a number of years, one of the two Deltania day boats in SAMM came over and joined the racing to be rewarded by two seventh place results.

ON a glorious first day of June, Montgo Golf Society battled with its annual bogey competition sponsored b y A l a n S k i n n e r. U n b e k n o w n t o most, Alan is an accomplished painter and brought along some of his works as prizes. This approach to greater variety in their prizes is only to be encouraged and most of the group really appreciated taking home something a little different, if they were lucky enough to play well!

Making the most of the excellent conditions, and in his first competition as a member of Montgo, Jim Haywood came in first place. In second place was Penny Barden and in third Simon Fox.

The three NTP prizes provided the Snelling household with another clutch of prizes as Susie hit to 6 . 3 6 m o n t h e 11 t h a n d J o h n n y t o 5.87m with his second shot on the 18th. It would have been a clean sweep for them if Denise Cooper hadn’t knocked Johnny off the card on the third by getting just 40cm closer with 5.50m.

Prizes were also awarded to Neil Cuming and Elizabeth Grin.

Next week, they have changed their match to the three clubs and a putter format sponsored by John Day. The Presidents Cup has been moved to the following week due to bridge repairs on the 7th.

El Plantino 2 Golf Society ELEVEN members recently played in the society’s Hidden Partners competition, with the one player pairing up with two partners.

The course was in less than perfect condition after the greens had been Hollow Tined.

However, it was ideal for precision golf as the ball did not move far after pitching.

John Wilby gave the best exhibition of target golf on the par three course, scoring five birdies and numerous near misses. Rod Loveday had his best round for quite a while and was drawn with John to win by a clear eight points.

The standard of play was good with only one player scoring less than 30 points despite the bumpy greens.

Those who came nearest the pins were Ray Housley (hole 1), John Wilby (hole 6). In second place were Graham Blakeway with 35 points and Mike Williams with 34 points. And in first place, John Wilby with 42 points and Rod Loveday with 35 points.

The society plays golf at the El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

To cater for all abilities, both courses are used, the par 3 nine-hole course and the main 18-hole course.

The membership rates are very competitive.

San Miguel Golf Society at El Valle WITH heavy rain forecast for late afternoon, the concept of ‘ready golf’ garnered new followers on the society’s visit to El Valle. Sadly, tail-end-Charlie members had to play the final few holes in a downpour, much to the delight of their compatriots enjoying a beer from the comfort of the clubhouse’s covered terrace.

El Valle is a relatively short course but it’s a track where a booming drive from the tee isn’t always the best option. Just two of all the starters managed to break par, with Captain Tony Smale hitting a colossal 41 points to be the event’s highest scorer.

As winner of the President’s Trophy Round 3, Tony received a golf shirt from Mick Roscoe on behalf of the tournament’s sponsor, Moneycorp.

The results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Bob Eyland (30), 3rd John Bodnar(34), 2nd Brian Butler (34 on CB) and 1st Mick Roscoe (35).

Silver Category: 4th Gordon Wilson (33), 3rd

Paddy Diskin (35), 2nd Mike Fearnehough (35 on CB), and 1st Roger Webb (38).

Gold Category: 4th John Humphreys (33), 3rd Mick Cook (33 on CB), 2nd Eva Petterson (34), and 1st Tony Smale (41).

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s went to Bob Eyland, Mick Cook, John Mellor and Phil De Lacey.

Phil’s win was a tight decision over sore loser Hugh Reilly who whined that Phil had paced out the distance of his own ball by long-striding like Monty Python’s Minister of Silly Walks whilst reckoning the distance of Hugh’s ball using a gait normally associated with that of an arthritic Geisha girl.

Best guest prize went to Martin Racster.

Derek Johnstone won this week’s Abacus prize, a bespoke bottle of wine sponsored by Gordon Wilson.

In the lone match play game, Robin Eastman, who was five up at one point, narrowly defeated his Viking challenger, Kyree Skarsmoen, by two holes.
