PEDRO SANCHEZ: Is sworn in as president of the government.

IN last week’s RTN, I looked at the situation in Italy and Spain and in just a few days, things changed dramatically seeing the ousting of Mariano Rajoy and the appointment of Pedro Sanchez as Spain’s leader.

The old, supposedly Chinese, proverb of ‘Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true’ could well apply to ‘Mr Handsome’ as the new Prime Minister is known, as he has had to choose a series of interesting bedfellows in order to take over the reins of power.

He now has to rely on the somewhat erratic Podemos party under the supposed ‘pupp e t ’ o f I r a n a n d Ve n e z u e l a , Pablo Iglesias as well as the Catalan Separatist parties (when PSOE opposes independence).

In fairness to Mr Sanchez, he had to quit as leader of the party a year ago because he accused Mr Rajoy’s Partido Popular of corruption and having

returned to lead the party, his words appears to have come true and he has had the PP kicked out of government.

Time will be of the essence as if he can talk to the Catalan Separatists and come to some form of negotiated agreement that goes further than the old government but does not break up the country, then he could, on a tide of approval, call a new election as he has even fewer guaranteed votes in the Cortes than did Mr Rajoy.

Whilst Spain at least has a new lease of political life, things are not exactly rosy over in Britain with Brexit.

The EU chief negotiator Barnier made a very telling statement in an interview saying that basically, he is fed up with Britain and the negotiations as he believes that Britain wants to leave, so effectively stop asking for concessions and just leave!

There seems to be no likeli-

hood of an acceptable agreement for the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic and now the Labour party has reinforced its support for a United Ireland (subject to approval of the electorate) and also wants to see new laws concerning abortion in Ulster.

Let us not forget that the

Conservatives are a minority government, depending upon the support of the Democratic Unionist Party which is a conservative, protestant party which is most focused upon Ulster remaining part of the United Kingdom.

Now with the Conservative party seeing some major in-

fighting between pro and still anti-Brexiteers, there is a growing call for a second referendum which is backed by Billionaire George Soros, known as ‘The Man Who Broke the Bank of England’ as he made a billion dollars out of Black Wednesday and perhaps surp r i s i n g l y, s o m e 1 6 L o n d o n based Labour MPs are supporting Vince Cable, also calling for another bite of the cherry.

Most ironic news of the week is that Lord Lawson (former Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer), a major promoter of Brexit has decide that he would rather live in France and is applying for a new resident’s permit and Jacob Rees-Mogg who says he doesn’t want to be next prime minister but is antiRussian has now been revealed as owning an investment company that earns large amounts of profits from supporting Russian industry.

The one bright bit of news is that Fabian Picardo, socialist Chief Minister of Gibraltar hopes that the new Spanish government will be more amicable and understanding than the last.

But the group got more than they bargained for after hailing a cab on the Benidorm strip.

“I thought FootGolf would be a good thing to do,” Jack said.

“The complex in Alicante is 40 minutes in a taxi tops from Benidorm.”

Ryan and some of the other men had already jumped in the first taxi and were on the road, leaving Jack, Ross Campbell, David Storie and Drew Patterson in the second.

“We quickly realised that the woman driving our taxi, who couldn’t speak any English, wasn’t following the car in front,” Jack continued.

“She took a wrong turn so we thought she’d get back on track.

“An hour passed by and we

knew something was up.”

The driver stopped several times on the hard shoulder, made U-turns and shouted at Drew’s sat nav mobile telephone app.

“After a while we noticed that she was following signs to Madrid,” Jack said.

“Time went by and we knew we were closer and closer to Madrid.”

At that point the lads decided to record their adventure on their phones, and later posted the footage online.

“We’re in the f*****g outback,” Drew is heard to say in the passenger seat. “ We’re in the middle of nowhere.

“Why is it everything we need to do man just cannae go right?”

Jack added: “You don’t need to go travelling next year Drew. “ You’ve saved a fortune

mate.

“You’ve seen it all.”

Drew later said: “We’ve seen half of Spain for €100.

“What a f*****g bargain.”

After ditching the taxi on an industrial estate somewhere between Alicante and Madrid they called another cab which took them to the FootGolf centre.

The caper came after fellow reveller Colin was hospitalised after slicing open his foot while tr ying to climb into their hotel fridge.

And after arriving at FootGolf the party ended up being chased around the complex by a golf cart with member of staff Miguel at the wheel.

20,000 bottles of ‘fake’ wine on sale

WOMEN returning from the centre of Alicante after taking part in the annual ‘Hogueras’ (Bonfires) fiesta by night bus will be able to get off wherever the y wish.

The measure has been introduced to reduce the jour ne y times dur ing the hours when there is more risk to people who would need to walk home from the usual bus stops.

In addition, there will be a number of parking bans in several areas of Alicante with the aim of encouraging more people to use the special shuttle bus services in operation for the duration of what is the 90th anniversary of the famous festival.

The announcement of this initiative was made by the new mayor of Alicante Luis Barcala, who said that the ability for women to get the buses to stop outside their homes is part of a pilot pro-

Bus request stop safety initiative

The scheme is part of a series of antiabuse measures introduced in Alicante to coincide with the start of the fiesta and tourist season to allow people, and especially women, to enjoy their nights out without any dangers.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers based in San Vicente del Raspeig are investigating two people in Elche, suspected of selling wine that was not suitable for drinking.

The couple, a 73-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both Spanish, are alleged to have stored and prepared for sale online a total of 20,000 bottles of wine that were discovered in an underground vehicle repair workshop.

The investigation was opened by the Guardia Civil following an individual complaint from someone who had purchased 10,000 bottles of wine from a wellknown wine merchant in Yecla (Murcia).

It was when he opened a number of the bottles and began to taste them that the usual high quality wine was so bad that he decided to return them. However, and

Analysis of the wine revealed that it didn’t come from the Murcia merchant and in addition to the poor taste there were also anomalies in the labelling, batch number etc.

Guardia Civil investigators were able to discover

the identities of those allegedly behind the scam thanks to looking at the website from which the wine was sold, and ultimately led them to the storeroom in Elche which had no connection to the production of the product whatsoever.

Where the wine came from that filled the many thousands of bottles is still being investigated.

‘Hit-and-run’ driver detained A TEN-YEAR-OLD boy was left in a serious condition after being hit by a car in Alicante.

At first, the 24-year-old driver f led the scene without stopping after the accident but was later found by the Local Police and arrested. He was subsequently tested for alcohol and drugs and was found to have consumed the latter. The driver appeared in court the following day where it was decided he would have his driving licence withdrawn.

Further legal proceedings - including potentially being held in custody - were dependant on the continuing condition of the child victim as he recovers in the Intensive Care Unit of the Alicante General Hospital.

Despite being released at this stage, the driver fears reprisals from the boy’s family and therefore, according to a repor t in the Spanish media, is apparently not at his home and may have temporarily left Alicante altogether.

The incident happened in the Juan XXIII neighbourhood of the city when the car turned left at a junction, hitting a bollard and at the same time running over the child who was on a zebra crossing at the time with his small scooter.

A witness in a car coming in the opposite direction and had stopped at the zebra crossing at the time of the accident said that the hit-and-run driver appeared to think of stopping after the impact but soon sped off.

ACCORDING to a report in the Spanish media, the Alicante General Hospital is planning to expand its Accident and Emergency Department and also increase the number of beds available across the hospital.

The central Department of Health will be investing around €5.5 million in reforming parts of the building that include an extra 2,000m of general and paediatric emergency services, in an area that has become obsolete and too small for the demand placed on it.

Hospital managers have said that the plans for the expansion have been prepared and are being presented to the town hall for their permission. Once granted, the tender for the work will be put out in the public domain.

The project will see an increase in the number of ‘boxes’ in A&E from 25 to 40 - the areas where people are treated that are unlikely to be admitted - and the number of beds in observation will increase from the current 13 to 20.

More than 500 people are attended to in A&E on a daily basis, and the last major reforms to that department were carried out in 1991.

City hospital plans major expansion

by David Bennett MAYORS from neighbouring municipalities joined more than 1,000 people who marched against the ‘crossing of death’ in Pego.

T hey are demanding that the Ministry of Public Works carry out measures to stop the number of tragedies taking place on the N-332 black spot.

Two weeks ago, another person died and four cyclists lost their lives last year, and locals said that it’s “outrageous” that they are scared to cross the road to get to their own beach.

the Valencian Community. Among the protesters were the mayors of Pego, Oliva , El Verger and l’Atzubia.

The demonstration is seeking a firm commitment from the Ministry to put an end to these concerns as soon as possi-

ble. Some years ago, a plan to build two roundabouts and a pedestrian footbridge was discussed by central government but got no further.

The march was the first of many to take place, with a fur ther one planned for Oliva shortly.

Students tell of gender issues JAVEA Council’s Department for Equality is today (Friday) showing a video documentary featuring seven people recounting their own experiences of sexual discrimination.

The presentation will start at 8pm in the Casa de la Cultura in Javea entry is free for all - and has been prepared by students of the IES Antoni Llido and the IES Number 1 Schools as part of a special diversity project in conjunction with the council.

Councillor Montse Villaverde thanked all those that had taken part in the video and for agreeing to tell of personal situations connected with gender and sexual orientation.

Water company reinvests profits THE water company that supplies Javea with its water has had a very successful year. Amjasa closed the last financial year with a profit of €956,000 and it has been announced that the money will be reinvested into improving the network. During the last 12 months, Amjasa supplied close to seven million cubic metres of drinking water to the 27,156 subscribers to the service.

Taxi drivers face language tests I N a s e r ie s o f m o d i f i c a tions to the conditions for obtaining permits to drive taxis in Benidorm, applicants will now be expected to speak three languages.

The City Council wants to ensure that its taxi drivers can communicate per fectly with the overw helming ma jor i ty of their passengers - and vice-versa - and so regulations now ask that ne w applicants must have knowledge of Spanish, English and Valencian.

In addition, they must present a cer t ificate to prove the y don’t have a criminal record.

This certificate must say that the drivers have no background in respect to any road safety issues or any sex or gender violence offences. Councillor Jose R amon Gonz alez de Z arate ex plained that these new rules will guar-

Dogs save owner A WOMAN is alive thanks to the actions of her two dogs who saved her from a fire.

Dominique’s pets Czechoslovakian Wolfhounds called Lua and Llop - were alerted when fire broke out in her second-hand shop on the road from Benissa to Jalon as their owner was sleeping.

As Dominique explained, “Lua started to bark and I woke up. I thought at first she’d been disturbed by a noise and told her to shut up before going back to sleep.”

But the dogs weren’t giving up that easy. The other dog Llop decided to physically drag its owner out of bed. “He grabbed my arm and pulled me. It was then I saw the flames that were inside the house.

“They certainly saved my life.”

Planned to open in 2019, the municipality will have its own athletics stadium and a n at u ra l t u r f fo o t b a l l pitch.

T h e b u d g e t fo r t h e works is just over €1.1 million and financed by the Valencian Comm u n i t y, A l i c a n te Province, and the local council.

Mayor Bernabe Cano announced that once completed, the athletics stadium will be launched with two toplevel events and that both facilities will meet the full approval of sporting bodies I A A F a n d F I FA , a n d t h u s e n a b l e i n te r n a tional competitions to be hosted there.

by Mark Rogers TEUL ADA-MOR AIR A will see the sun rising in more than one way this year. In addition to the long summer days, the municipality is looking toward the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ to bring Japanese music to the local Auditori Teulada Moraira later on in the year.

There will also be a montage - entitled Opera 2001 - of Mozart’s operatic work ‘The

Magic Flute’ taking place on October 14.

For the first time, a percussion and dance show from Japan will be performing in the Marina Alta and is part of the commitment from the council to bring a wider range of cultural events to its people. The show - Taiko Hayato - will be held on Saturday November 3 and will feature performances of the ‘Taiko’... the large drum used in a number of festive events in their country.

The show coincides with the commemoration of 150 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan.

The full programme of music was announced by the mayor of Teulada-Moraira Carlos Linares alongside the director of the auditorium Maite Serrat.

The Auditori TeuladaMoraira was inaugurated seven years ago and its popularity continues to demonstrate that cultural events still pull in the crowds in the Marina Alta.

THE arrival of the service known as Cabify in Alicante has unleashed a great deal of alarm among the city’s taxi drivers.

The platform which offers a number of services in high-end vehicles has begun to operate with a fleet of 50 cars, and the taxi drivers insist that it’s “unfair competition.”

The rise of Cabify and similar operations in recent years has become a perceived enemy of the traditional taxi service of which in Alicante there are 350 registered vehicles.

Speaking to the Spanish media, Nacho Picó, president of the Asociación Ra-

dio Tele Taxi, stressed that “this and other similar operations aim to replace the traditional identify of the taxi.”

Cabify offers its customers a range of services that can be requested immediately via a mobile phone app or the company’s website.

Among the categories available is ‘lite’ with a minimum rate of €4 and both ‘executive’ or ‘group’ which require an advance booking of six hours in both cases.

The scheme is already present in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Seville and Valencia.

Denia phone shop raided TWO masked men entered a Denia shop on Calle Marques de Campo in the early hours of Tuesday and stole telephones and tablets valued at €10,000.

The men broke the glass with a block of concrete, and escaped with their booty in just two minutes. According to the store manager, he believes the thieves aren’t from the local area as their modus operandi is similar to a series of other raids in the Valencian Community.

Moraira-Teulada U3A celebrates

ALMOST 250 members of Moraira-Teulada U3A celebrated the 10th anniversary of their organisation with a wonderful Dinner-Dance at the Salones Canor banqueting suite at the end of May. The evening commenced with a cava reception held in the lovely gardens at Canor when members were entertained by the music of the Poco Loco steel band followed by a very enjoyable multi-course dinner and then dancing to the Abba Elite Band until midnight.

Diners were welcomed by the President, David Haxon, who thanked the organising committee on behalf of all those attending.

Guests of honour were the mayor of Teulada-Moraira, Carlos Linares Bañon and his wife Dora, and Councillor Laura Hillstead. In the 10 years since it was first inaugurated, Moraira-Teulada U3A has attracted more than 2,000 members who regularly join in the many activity groups.

Bus connections to improve

by Darren Parmenter SMALL municipalities located within the Marina Baixa will soon have better bus connections with their larger neighbours.

Those such as Bolulla, Ta r b e n a o r G u a d a l e s t will see improvements in public transport links to Benidorm, Callosa d’en Sarria and the regional hospital located in Villajoyosa.

The plans are laid out in the new project drafted by the Ministr y of Ho u s i n g a n d P u b l i c Works that has looked at the ongoing demand in these local areas to imp ro ve ro u te s b e t w e e n the mountain towns and villages with the rest of the region.

viding the local bus services but their concessions officially expired some years ago, accordi n g to a re p o r t i n t h e Spanish media. The plan has also scuppered the ideas of several municip a l i t i e s to c re ate a re gional consor tium that can independently manage their own transport services.

ulation of 182,000 which leaps to 486,000 during the inf lux of summer tourists. Whoever wins t h e co n t ra c t w i l l b e asked to provide a minimum of 72 buses to cover 26 routes.

In addition, some of the outlying towns and villages will be required to h ave a m i n i m u m o f two daily connections to a n d f ro m t h e i r n e i g h bourhoods.

Luxury campsite on high BENITACHELL has given the green light to a ‘sustainable’ campsite to be located on top of the Cala del Moraig.

The town council is committed to encouraging camping tourism, but locating the dedicated sites away from the beach area and on higher ground.

The latest camp Dreamsea Mediterranean Camp - is due to open for this summer season and can be accessed by a steep road that leads to the Cova dels Arcs.

In addition to the luxury tent facilities that will be able to accommodate 80 visitors, the campsite will have a 376m2 area that includes a reception and a restaurant.

MY conversation at the weekend with a 60-something Brit, on his first visit to Spain, was going swimmingly well until he dropped two words into the conversation guaranteed to send my blood pressure into the stratosphere: ‘gateway drug.’

He’d just told me that, in the two days he’d been in Benidorm, his nostrils had been assailed by the ‘stench’ of cannabis smoke in at least four different locations, and he thought the police ought to ‘get their bloody fingers out’ and come down hard on dope smokers.

Through gritted teeth I explained to him that Spain had decriminalised cannabis for personal consumption, and that a 2013 report published by The Local showed that more Spaniards were using the drug than smoking cigarettes. Furthermore, Spain had overtaken the Netherlands as a cannabis smoking nation and is third in the world behind Iceland and the US. “Well that’s just terrible,” he huffed. “Don’t the Spanish realise

‘Gateway drug’ baloney that marihuana is a gateway drug, and will soon have a massive problem with people addicted to heavier stuff.”

“So why aren’t you on heroin?”

I asked. He looked aghast. “I don’t smoke dope. In fact I don’t smoke at all, so why would I take drugs?” To that I replied: “But you have in front of you one of the most addictive drugs on the planet, alcohol, and you’re now on your third gin and tonic. If one were to take your ‘gateway drug’ theory to its logical conclusion, you’d be in an alley somewhere with a needle in your arm.”

I then pointed out that, in 2014, the US magazine Psychology Today reported that the science shows ‘overwhelmingly that for most people marihuana is not a gateway drug and that, in fact, most drug use begins with alcohol and nicotine.’

I then contrasted the behaviour of young Spaniards with that of Brits in the same age group. Here it is incredibly rare to see Spanish youngsters abusing, or even drinking alcohol, but each time I return to the UK I see drunkenness and booze-induced aggression EVERYWHERE. In 2015 the Global Drug Survey, an online survey of 100,000

SMOKING DOPE: Marihuana is a gateway drug. people in 50 countries, showed that: ‘Of the respondents in Britain who sought help after a drinking session, almost a fifth had drunk more than 20 drinks, and half of them ended up hospitalised.

‘Three per cent said they had been drinking for more than four days. The symptoms most often reported by those needing medical help were accidents, trauma, confusion, memory loss, becoming unconscious, and feeling depressed and anxious the morning after.’

Meanwhile, the UK government’s resistance to liberalising laws that currently make the use of drugs other than alcohol illegal is compounding the problem. For example, at the weekend, two people died and another person was in a critical condition after taking dodgy drugs at a dance music festival in Hampshire These sort of deaths - A total of 3,744 people died of drug overdoses in 2016 alone - could easily be avoided if the authorities would just act on expert advice

by legalising and regulating drugs. Not only would this put criminal dealers out of business, but would generate millions in tax revenues.

In August 2017 The Independent reported that the UK government was spending £1.6 billion a year on an anti-drugs policy, and it quoted Martin Powell, the head of campaigns at the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, as saying that this strategy has “little effect on street prices or availability.

All the while fuelling drug market violence, and harming the young and vulnerable through criminalising them.

“And for what? Drug use hasn’t fallen for eight years. More importantly, drug deaths have hit record levels for four years in a row. This proves the ongoing commitment to drug war enforcement is not about new evidence it is serving other political and ideological interests. It’s truly scandalous that the poor and vulnerable are dying as a result. The government are responsible, and must be called to account.”

He is absolutely correct, but I’ve given up hope of ever seeing a British government doing the right thing in regard to safeguarding it citizens

by Darren Parmenter THE growing economic recovery across Spain has had a positive effect on the use of the toll roads in the Alicante Province.

This is according to the Ministry of Works who have announced that the roads in question see an average daily use of 46,329 vehicles, of which 3,395 are trucks and lorries. The data shows that more people are commuting to work using their cars, the movement of goods is up, and tourism is on the increase... all factors contributing to the extra motorway use.

The extra tolls have enabled the controlling companies to recover some of the users they lost

when the financial crisis hit Spain. Since it hit rock-bottom in 2013, the volume of traffic on these motorways has already increased by 19 per cent in Alicante Province and includes the AP-7 between Alicante and Valencia, the A-7 between Alicante and Cartagena and the Alicante ringroad, although the latter is now state controlled after the original controller became bankrupt.

The daily figure is 7,439 more than registered at the lowest point five years ago, but is still 12,000 short of the heydays of 2007 with an average daily use of 58,248 vehicles... the highest ever recorded for the toll roads.

The AP-7 - operating from Alicante to Tarragona - closed in 2017 with a profit of €135 million.

Deterioration of air quality in Alicante

by Mark Rogers QUALITY of air close to the port of Alicante is getting worse.

These are the findings of a number of meters that have been installed close by to measure the degree of pollution, and have detected particles when there is no activity in the port.

This can be explained by the deterioration of the quality of the air breathed in Alicante at certain times of the day due to the intense levels of traffic on the seafront, specifically first thing in the morning and early afternoon.

According to a report in the Spanish media by ‘Ecologists in Action’ (EIA), the fact that the Alicante Bus Station is close to where the meters are is signifi-

cant. It’s estimated that the city sees 150,000 vehicles a day, with around 54,000 using the busy south access to the city close to the port and bus station.

EIA state that between 2015 and 2017, the legal requirements of protecting health and vegetation in a third of the 126 areas containing almost 19 million people were not met.

According to a report in the Spanish media, Councillor Lourdes Caselles has approved the planning permission that was previously held by promoter Olga Urbana SL be passed to the new owners.

The original licence was granted in 2006 for the construction of the skyscraper with 269 homes, parking for 398 and 133 garages.

If everything now goes to plan, the project could be finished within 12 months.

At present, the building is 93 per cent complete and despite no work being carried out on the site for four years after the developer went into bankruptcy, the tower is in a good condition.

NO SURPRISE: August is the popular month for losing personal property.

Lost and found in Benidorm

by Darren Parmenter IT continues to amaze the authorities in Benidorm the wide range of lost property that is discovered in the tourist capital during the course of a year.

The number is in the thousands, and as well as the usual passports, wallets, keys, mobile telephones and credit cards, some strange and unexpected items joined the more traditional list.

These have included a 52-

inch television, baby buggies, lottery tickets (especially at Christmas), tools, hearing aids and even, a few years ago, a false leg was found on the beach!

Add the permanent resident population of mainly Spanish numbering close to 70,000 to the millions of tourists that come to Benidorm, and it’s no surprise at the amount of items that are lost and found every day. Anything found by the Local Police or other council employees are stored and

catalogued and the attempt to trace their rightful owners begins. However, many items can remain on the shelves for a number of years without being claimed.

According to a report in the Spanish media, so far in 2018 a total of 654 objects have been reunited with the owners of which 281 were found by the police. Throughout last year as a whole, 2,270 items ended up in the lost property depository and August - with 380 - showing the highest number.

Water company reinvests profits THE water company that supplies Javea with its water has had a very successful year. Amjasa closed the last financial year with a profit of €956,000 and it has been announced that the money will be reinvested into improving the network. During the last 12 months, Amjasa supplied close to seven million cubic metres of drinking water to the 27,156 subscribers to the service.

Raining dogs and dogs!

UNFORTUNATELY, the inclement weather over last weekend severely affected the rastro that was held to raise awareness and funds for the Asociación Protectora de Animales de San Antonio (APASA). The next one will be held in September on a date to be advised nearer the time.

In the meantime, APASA are looking for a home for a lovely dog. Her name is Rona and she arrived in APASA in March this year.

She’s a fun loving girl who adores people and

the other dogs she’s come into contact with during her stay. Rona is very loving and really enjoys having a cuddle... and is very affectionate in return. She displays this by cuddling up to you and trying to get up on your lap! She’s also very much at home playing with and chasing around with the other dogs.

U3A Vall Del Pop: Word Addicts VTHE Word Addicts group is not just a Book Club. Yes, they do gather once a month to sit and have lively discussions about a book they have chosen to read over the previous month. But they do more than that, they are the Word Addicts.

They sometimes share short poems that they have discovered, and occasions some of them have written some. They talk about the origins of words and phrases.

During the remainder of the month some of them get together once a week to play games that are largely based on words, such as Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagram, Balderdash, Countdown and even a couple which they have invented themselves.

They do have one or two that are not strictly word games, but they do exercise those brain cells. Above all, the group doesn’t take itself

MARKET research company Kantar Worldpanel have released their 2018 ‘brand footprint ranking,’ revealing the top 10 grocery products bought by customers in Spain.

Of these, six are Spanish brands, two French, one Mexican and one from the United States - although the jury has long been out whether this, too, was originally created in Spain.

It will be of no surprise to anyone that the number one brand appearing in Spanish residents’ grocery baskets is Coca-Cola, given that it is the most famous in the world and accounting for 137.6 million ‘consumer reach points’ (CRPs). This is defined as how many times an item is purchased, irrespective of how many people buy it and at what frequency.

At any one time, 76.1 per cent of households in Spain will have at least one product manufactured by Coca-Cola in its fridge or cupboard.

Coca-Cola leads the list, followed by Colgate, for toothpaste, and Maggi for soups.

El Pozo ham and processed meat, packaged in Murcia, is the second-most popular grocery brand in Spain, reaching 130.9 million consumers and found in 78.5 per cent of households across the country.

Of the top 50 most popular brands in Spain, 94 per cent are on sale in the country’s three largest supermarket chains, Mercadona, Carrefour and Día.

They need volunteers who can offer maybe as little as two to three hours a week to help run their fundraising shop.

You’ll be joining a positive and happy team who run the shop - taking in and pricing up their lovely donations of clothing, toys and homewares and

selling them with a smile. They sell new and used items, including designer clothes and original artworks by local artists. It’s a friendly environment and they welcome lots of regulars on a weekly basis, as well as new customers who come in to browse and leave with a few bags full of goodies!

Grant a Wish differs from many other charities in as much as they support individual projects and people. On an ongoing basis, they provide support to a children’s orphanage and to a men’s shelter in

Gandia, this support takes many forms from study areas in the orphanage for the older children, to essential foodstuffs, toiletries and kitchen supplies for the men’s shelter.

Recently they were proud to be able to provide riding therapy sessions for children from the Raquel Paya school in Denia.

‘Illegal’ fish sold in Calpe port COLLABORATION between the Guardia Civil in Alicante and the Valencian Community Fisheries authorities has been able to seize 520 kilos of fish in Calpe without the official documentation. The fish, made up of hake and octopus was in addition to a further 610 kilos of shellfish found in the town of Cox. According to a report in the Spanish media, the fish was being openly sold in a number of different points around the port in Calpe, even from a number of vehicles. None of this particular batch had passed through the usual controls of the fish market and its origin was also unable to be verified.

It is understood that the investigations have concentrated on five fishing boats and three wholesalers, and once the fish had been cleared as being fit for consumption it was quickly delivered to a number of charities and organisations for onward distribution.

The latest find was part of the Annual Plan of Control and Inspection of Fishing Activities (PACIAP) during which a number of different ports and markets within the Valencian Community are inspected.

In the case of Cox, close to Alicante, the 600 kilos of clams

also didn’t have any accompanying documentation to prove their origin, and failed to pass through any official clearance points. They were also passed to the neediest charities.

Maritime Law sets out a list of fines for such offences that could reach €60,000.

Eva, soul of the people

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com OCCASIONALLY, a birthday crops up to give one pause for thought and for me May 7 was no exception. The date is just a year short of the centenary of the birth of Eva Peron (1919 1952), a figure who has frustrated left and right since she inspired belief in the power of women worldwide.

When after the Second World War the United Nations (UN) imposed a trade embargo on Francoist Spain in an attempt to starve it into submission, Juan Peron’s Argentine government came to Spain’s aid. Vital foods and medicines got through.

Spain survived the blockade that targeted not so much the governing power but the people of Spain. For this reason, Eva Peron is still a revered icon for many in Spain.

In June 1947, Eva travelled to Spain at the invitation of President Francisco Franco (1892 1975). Argentina was the only

nation that maintained a diplomatic relationship with Spain following the Second World War and offered aid to the trade embargoed country.

Upon her arrival in Madrid, Eva was welcomed by more than three million people. After 15 days in Spain, Eva went on to tour Italy, Portugal, France, and Switzerland. After becoming well-known in Europe, Eva Perón also featured on the cover of Time magazine in July 1947.

Eva Perón, the wife of Argentine president Juan Perón, was first lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952. Eva Perón, fondly called ‘Evita’ by many, played a major role in her husband’s administration.

She is widely remembered for her efforts to help the poor and for her role in getting women the vote. Eva Perón was adored by the multi-ethnic peoples of Argentina but her government’s anti-Stalinist stance hardly endeared her to the liberal-left.

This was their problem rather than hers for Evita symbolised everything the left claimed to revere. It is difficult to imagine a more humble background than

that of the woman who was to become a fabulous success in her own right long before she met her future husband.

In scanning Eva’s biography one is impressed by the impact made by this dirt-poor daughter of an impoverished single mother before her sad death from cancer when just 33 years of age.

A clue lies in the words of a woman who achieved far more in a shorter period of time than did darling of the left, Spanish Republican pro-Stalinist firebrand Dolores Ibarruri.

When interviewed, the woman who inspired women whatever their political views, said, “One cannot accomplish anything without fanaticism.”

Eva’s socialist credentials were based on her faith in the power of the people if inspired, mentored and brought to believe in themselves.

“There is nothing stronger than a town. All it takes is to be fair, free and sovereign.”

Therein lays the paradox of faux socialism and real socialism; which should give the illiberal-left pause for thought.

Ambulance cover questioned

OPPOSITION Partido Popular (PP) in San Vicente del Raspeig have criticised the possible lack of ambulance cover for the municipality’s sports centre during the summer.

According to a report in the Spanish media, the current contract allows for dedicated coverage for sporting and council-organised events over 30 weekends (Saturday morning and afternoon and Sunday morning) between January and December. That leaves 22 weekends without such health cover.

PP’s Jose Rafael Pascual has asked the councillor for Sport to fully explain the criteria followed to determine which weekends will not see ambulances operating, so that clubs and participants are fully aware of the situation.

Quit smoking... in hospital - it’s time

GIVE IT UP: A hospital doctor is spearheading a stop-smoking campaign.

AN initiative set up by a doctor in Denia Hospital aimed at getting those that work in the health centre to give up smoking is bearing fruit.

The goal from Dr Miguel Angel Ciscar, a lung specialist, is to get people to quit tobacco altogether and begin a healthier lifestyle.

The fully-funded programme from Mari-

na Salud finances the cost of medication prescribed in the consultations to help stop smoking, and according to Dr Ciscar “shows the commitment that the health service has to the well-being of its employees.”

So far this year, 24 people have benefited from the scheme with the vast majority significantly reducing the cigarette consumption or giving up altogether.

JAVE A’S Social Ser vices department has received a subsidy of €500,000 that will go toward the 2018 salaries of the team of soci al workers and other professionals working in the Social Centre.

They include six social workers, a psychologist, a solicitor and administrators responsible for developing information, guidance and co unselling programmes.

Part of the subsidy will finance the office that looks after migrants, and will 100 per cent finance the summer support programme for families and children during the school holidays.

Staff will also be able to spend more time in assessing the needs and caring for the elderly population of Javea, especially those that ex per ience loneliness.

In case of fire... it’s checked THE Teulada- Benitachell Water Consortium has carried out a full check of the 165 hydrants throughout the two municipalities to guarantee that they are fully-functioning as the summer season gets underway.

The revision - undertaken by water company Hidraqua - also saw all the hydrant covers replaced and all the taps fully tightened to prevent leakages.

A number of the hydrants located in El Poble Nou de Benitachell played an important part in fighting one of the most destructive fires seen in the Valencian Community in recent years, back in September 2016.

British actor Michael Garry who starred in Series 4 of the BBC iconic criminal gangs’ show - talks exclusively to RTN while on holiday in Benidorm.

Adrien Brody, winner of Best Actor award at the 2003 Oscars, for starring in Roman Polanski’s ‘The Pianist’ in 2002, was a gangster in Peaky Blinders.

NO doubt you all romped through the translations that you had to do for homework, but just so you can prove to yourselves that you were right, here are the answers: Mi marido lee el periódico todos los días.

My husband reads the newspaper every day.

Mi hijo sale los sábados por la noche.

My son goes out on Saturday nights. ¿A qué hora coméis normalmente?

What time do you usually have lunch? (more than one you).

Los chicos cocinan cuando están en el campo.

The young people cook when they are in the countryside.

No oigo mi móvil.

I can’t hear my mobile phone. ¿Escribes en español y en inglés?

Do you write in Spanish and English?

No hago las camas siempre.

I don’t always make the beds.

Aprendo poco a poco.

I learn little by little.

Abrimos la tienda a las 9 de la mañana.

We open the shop at 9am. ¿Dónde vivís?

Where do you live? (more than one you).

Answers to translations and explanations I like these kinds of translations because they bring up all sorts of issues and help correct those little mistakes that we tend to make. The main point, of course, is to practise our verbs in different forms in the present tense. They are all standard verbs, as we have been studying, and there are examples of first, second and third persons singular and plural endings of the three different groups (-ar, -er and -ir).

Here are some of the other things you might also have questioned as you’ve done them, or read my answers. In number one, it is also possible to express every day, or each day, as ‘cada día,’ although ‘todos los días’ is a little more common.

In number two notice that when we combine a day and time of day in Spanish we do this with the word ‘por,’ whilst ‘on’ is replaced by the definite article ‘the,’ in this case ‘los.’

Number three might have caught out one or two of you and yes, you are quite right, ‘comer’ does mean to eat, but it is also used to mean ‘to have lunch.’ In this sentence which is clearly enquiring about someone’s daily routine ‘to have lunch’ is the more logi-

cal translation.

In number 4 the word ‘chicos’ could have various translations.

We don’t know if it refers to males only as it could also refer to a mixture of males and females. We could also perhaps say ‘lads,’ ‘kids,’ or ‘boys.’ This is where the discretion of the translator comes into play.

Number 5 is interesting - in Spanish we say the equivalent of ‘I don’t hear’ whereas in English we would always say ‘I can’t hear.’

Hence the translation offers what we would normally say in English.

Number 6 is the only one I can’t think of anything particular to say about (how unusual, I know)… except (!) please notice that, unlike in English, the languages ‘español’ and ‘inglés’ do not have capital letters, as with the same words referring to nationalities.

Number 7 - er… well… this isn’t me by the way, and number 8 - a good phrase to say while you are out and about trying out your Spanish. (I’m beginning to sound like Julie Andrews singing ‘Doh a deer…’)

Number 9 gives us a variation on our usu-

a l ‘por l a mañana,’ ‘por la tarde.’ When we say a specific time in the morning we use ‘de’ instead of ‘por’ as in ‘a las seis de a tarde.’

There is no point in asking why this is, it just is, and believe me English is just as complicated where these little words are concerned.

Number 10 - a standard sort of sentence that can be said to people you are chatting to when there’s more than one of them.

Don’t forget that the accent goes on the second ‘Í’ and that is the part of the verb that is emphasised.

My goodness me, I’ve used the whole article up on the homework. I sincerely hope it has been useful and also encouraging. Next week’s article will be about root-changing verbs, I promise.

ZIKA WARNING: Tiger mosquitoes thriving in Spain sparks virus fears MOSQUITOES have long been a severe threat spreading viruses such as dengue, zika and chikungunya. Holiday hot spots have been effected over the past 12 months by the increasing mosquito issues.

Alicante. The insects find stagnant pools of water to lay their eggs over the winter months for them to hatch once the warm weather spikes.

The mosquito population is normally kept under control by damselflies and dragonflies which feed on their

larvae and eggs, however due to the cold winter Spain has had this year this will not be as effective in controlling the mosquitoes as these predators are highly susceptible to extreme cold with snow and ice.

Clark Hartwell, Director of Fog Off Mosquito Control is aware that due to the icy weather conditions over the past six months we could see a repeat of the 2007/2008 outbreak which saw homes and gardens being taken over by those horrid insects.

Always remember to check your garden weekly for stagnant water, remove any garden waste and other items that give the mosquitoes areas to hide and add as many beautiful plants to your garden such as Lavender, Citronella and Marigolds as they act as a natural repellent against mosquitoes.

Preparing your dog for vet’s inspection IT is essential that all dogs are regularly inoculated and wormed, that is; inoculations and boosters every year, worming treatments every three months. The only effective worming products are available from your vets.

Many pet owners encounter problems at the vet. The dogs and cats do not like to be examined.

From an early age make it a pleasant experience for your pet to be handled and examined by different people. Always do this while you are present to reassure and reward the dog with praise and ‘titbits.’ Only ask sensible people, who are used to dogs to assist you with this exercise.

Some if not most vets prefer to examine their patients on a table. So if you have a dog that can be lifted onto a suitable table, get the dog used to being

Never let a dog jump off

the table by himself. If you use a table make sure a mat or cover is placed on it so that it is not slippery for the dog. There is no quicker way to make a dog hate being picked up and put on

a table than to place it on a slippery surface.

Administering treatments: Often following a visit to your vet you will be required to continue a course

of treatment at home, including giving pills or liquid medicine (orally); applying ointments to eyes, ears and skin; eye or ear drops.

The only reason dogs object to taking medicine is

that they are not used to being handled. It is kinder to prepare your dog to the best of your ability for the occasion when this will probably arise. This is best done by training your dog to allow you to handle it and examine any part of its body under any circumstances without any resistance from your dog.

Pills can often be given by disguising the pill inside a little piece of butter, margarine or cheese. There are many ‘Do Not’s’ associated with this sort of training, all of which are common sense.

Do not give dogs any medicine unless specifically prescribed for that dog by a vet. If in doubt about your dog’s health, consult a vet, never take advice from unqualified people; this includes pet shops, dog breeders, dog trainers, behaviourists and the person a friend knows who had a dog with the same sort of symptoms.

Do not put anything in your dog’s ear. Report discharges or smells to your vet. Do not put any drops or ointment into your dog’s eyes. Consult your vet. Do not interfere with any lumps, bumps, wounds, cysts, rashes or anything else on your dog’s body.

T h e 2 5 0 G TO is known as the Holy Grail model for its looks, rarity and smoothness on the road.

Just 36 were built between 1962 and 1964, and an American businessman has snapped up this version, which won the Tour de France motor race in 1964.

While it has been based in Germany for many years, it is often shown off and driven at international events.

James Cottingham of Hertfordshire-based DK Engineering which restored the car in the 1990s, said: “It has never had a big accident.

This is one of the best 250 GTOs in existence in terms of history and originality.

“It won the Tour de France Automobile - a race last held in 1986 -

Research compared the amount of germs found in a car with those found on common office items, and the results were alarming.

Conducted by Euro Car Parts, the study found that three of the five cars tested contained more bacteria than the inside of a bin lid.

Swabbing the steering, gear stick, dashboard controls and door handle, the vehicle interiors also contained more germs than a kitchen bench top and sink.

Only two of the cars had levels of contamination deemed ‘safe,’ with one passing as ‘OK’ and two marked ‘not safe’ or ‘extremely dirty.’

Norris has F1 in his sights BRITISH prodigy Lando Norris is on the brink of becoming F1’s next teen star, and he is targeting a big breakthrough in 2019.

Norris, born in Glastonbury on November 13,1999, has enjoyed a meteoric and dominant rise through the junior racing ranks.

On Wednesday, that rise took a dramatic twist when Toro Rosso offered Norris a racing seat for the remainder of 2018, replacing Brendon Hartley in the car.

McLaren rejected the overture, and see Norris as the most exciting product of their young driver programme since a certain Lewis Hamilton burst into F1 in 2007.

Their current driver line up is Fernando Alonso - 36 and increasingly disillusioned with his lack of competitiveness in recent seasons - and Stoffel Vandoorne, who has not set the racetrack alight in a year and a half at McLaren.
