Torrevieja fires at the double FOUR people were evacuated by firefighters from Torrevieja after a fire broke out in an electric box in ground floor commercial premises in Avenida Orihuela.

They took the decision to clear the three-storey building as a precaution, but there were only two non-Spanish couples in residence at the time.

At first the fire brigade couldn’t discover the seat of the fire, but it was quickly put out once found.

The blaze came around an hour after two cars were burned out on the Avenida de las Habaneras, with flames threatening a nearby flat.

by Darren Parmenter A BEACH located between the Club Nautico de Lo Pagan and the children’s park is the latest to become a ‘smoke free’ beach.

The initiative, which began in hospitals, is now looking to extend to beaches and sports centres across the country.

At this stage, the smokefree beaches are only at the pilot stage and as such police won’t be able to enforce the regulation and hand out any fines as smoking is not prohibited in law in these areas.

However, a number of posters will be prominently placed to show the effects of tobacco which is estimated to result in 3,000 deaths in the Murcia region alone.

According to the Ministry of Health, the sponsors of the scheme, more public spaces must encourage a healthier environment that can only benefit the population in the longer term.

Murcia’s Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, said, “Just as there are beaches for naturists and animals, why can’t we have beaches without smoke. We should have them for everyone, but especially for children who don’t want to be digging up cigarette butts as they play with their toys in the sand.”

Instead, a former IMF official Carlo Cottarelli who is known to be close to Brussels and in favour of austerity, has been appointed interim Prime Minister which means that there is bound to be another election.

The right dislike the snub which has seen ‘Mr Scissors’ as he is nicknamed in Italy - taking on the role of PM and they in turn are calling for the impeachment of President Sergio Mattarella, although with 64 governments since the war, Italy is no stranger to political chaos.

So that is one of the so-called European PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) adding to the economic problem and it has been joined by Spain.

The right of centre Partido Popular (PP) under Mariano Rajoy is another minority government which currently relies on the support of the new antiCatalan independence party Ciudadanos plus a few independents to rule.

THE last week has thrown up a number of economic fears which are brought about because of political instability in some of the most important members of the European Union.

Italy and Spain sit at number three, four in the list of Eurozone countries with economies that are only exceeded by Germany and France, but both are suddenly in turmoil.

Although it has a history of coalition governments, the latest Italian problem is seriously affecting the economy with the value of bonds dropping and in actual fact it is even hurting the value of the euro against other currencies.

It looked as if Italy was to be run by a coalition of the right with quite clear anti-immigration and Eurosceptic views, but when the President - who fulfils a mainly ceremonial role - refused to approve the appointment of Prof Paolo Savona, an 81-year-old economist who had

It has not been any secret that a number of former PP members at national and local level have been involved in corrupt practices, but the results of the recent Gürtel case which saw senior PP officials jailed for decades has spurred the opposition parties to demand that Mariano Rajoy should resign.

Understandably, he denies any knowledge of any wrong-doing and there appears to be no evidence of his involvement, although as leader of a party which has been littered with ‘troughiteers,’ it is argued that he should actually have had some idea of what was going on.

Due to the fact that the PP appear to have benefited financially from the corruption (albeit possibly unwittingly), the leader of the socialist PSOE Pedro Sanchez has called for a vote of no confidence in Mariano Rajoy.

Almost immediately, the leader of the third party in Spanish politics Pablo Iglesias of Podemos (who has just survived his own vote of no-confidence, called by him over his purchase of a €600,000 property) confirmed that his party would vote against Mr Rajoy.

Between the two parties, they control 156 votes in parliament out of 350, but they need a majority in order to see a new election and this will realistically only occur if they can persuade Ciudadanos to vote with them and that is highly unlikely.

So although it looks as if there will be no change of government, the political uncertainty in Spain has also affected the stock exchange adversely and added to the general economic uncertainty about the euro and the eurozone.

by Darren Parmenter THE Ministry of Health will shortly be modernising the delivery system in the Vega Baja Hospital by installing a network of pipes which will send samples directly to the laboratories.

The pneumatic transportation system - often seen in a number of local supermarkets and in department stores many generations ago - will replace the current method of the samples, medication and certain documents being transferred between departments on foot.

The initiative will cost €66,500 and the system will

This system, which already works in most modern hospitals, will be implemented in two phases with the first beginning in the next few weeks.

It will be installed by Oppent Instalaciones SL who secured

Speaking to the Spanish media, Director of Nursing at the Vega Baja Hospital, Francisco Garcia Gomez, said: “Thanks to this new system, the results from the subsequent tests can be obtained quicker.”

Third lane for the A-7 planned ACCORDING to a report in the Spanish media, the central Ministry of Public Works will be shortly putting out to tender a number of contracts to put a third lane in the A-7 in Orihuela.

The project will be financed entirely

by private investment - expected to be in the region of €931 million - and at no cost to the taxpayer.

The stretch of the A-7 in question runs past Crevillente, Albatera and Orihuela and sees 40,000 vehicles on a daily basis.

Dog tourism season gets underway A L IC A N T E h o te l i e r s a re getting ready for the annual influx of tourists, and as summer officially starts today (June 1), they are also preparing for ‘dog tourism’ too.

Mo re a n d m o re p e o p l e are choosing to bring their dogs with them on holiday and it’s not gone unnoticed b y t h e h o te l i n d u s t r y.

There are already a dozen or so hotels that permit ani m a l s i n t h e i r ro o m s , a l though in some cases it only refers to guide dogs.

L a s t s u m m e r, t h e d o g beach at Agua Amarga became a focus of attention fo r h u n d re d s o f o w n e r s from across Spain and other countries who took advantage of the facilities.

This has led to those that manage the beach to have agreements with a number o f h o te l s , h o s te l s a n d campsites within the Alicante Province to jointly and actively promote pet tourism.

In addition, a number of local taxis will also be prepared to transport the dogs f ro m l o c a l h o te l s to t h e nearby beach.

Still a load of rubbish DESPITE fines being doubled for illegal dumping of rubbish and a much publicised increase in police patrols, the problem still persists in the Orihuela Costa.

Streets in the area are becoming full of garden waste, with as many as 60 different incidents being reported in 12 urbanisations.

The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) is pressing the local council for a dedicated recycling area.

Speaking to the Spanish media, spokesman Tomas Moreno said that as long as no such location exists, the problem won’t go away.

Pets to aid patient care

The Ribera Salud and the Colle ge of A licante Ve ts (ICOVA L) have create d a protocol to regulate the access of the pets to hospitals.

This is the first of its kind in the region and one of the very few across Spain.

T he initiative has been introduced in response to a number of requests from the patients themselves , something they’ve been trying to achieve for some time.

A similar scheme has been in operation in the Hospital La Fe in Valencia, which has benefited children in the Paediatric Oncolo g y Ward, but the one that is about to start in Tor-

BECAUSE I was exceptionally fastidious as a kid, avoiding all forms of rough-and-tumble that might leave dirt marks on my clothes or skin, I reacted with outrage when my parents announced they were taking me to a primary school fancy dress event dressed as a chimney sweep.

Despite the colossal tantrum I threw when I was told that this would mean donning rags and having my face and hands smeared with soot, mum and dad persisted and off I was dragged to a ghastly prepubescent gathering of mini witches and fairies and werewolves and pirates and the like.

Prizes were handed out for the best costumes, and, to my disgust, I was awarded one. I had to get up on stage to receive an Enid Blyton book. This exposure doubly compounded my intense discomfit at appearing in public with a smutty face and filthy clothes.

I sulked for a week and trashed my prize. I HATED Enid Blyton books.

When I was 18 some friends

The perils of fancy dress pressured me into accompanying them to a ‘vice versa’ party. Men were to wear women’s clothes, and the women were to come as men.

I reluctantly agreed. I was given a mini-skirt and a wig by my friend Derek, but had to filch frilly underwear, stockings, shoes with stiletto heels and a bra from my mother’s wardrobe. Of course I didn’t tell my parents about the party.

But they found out anyway because I was dragged home drunk as a skunk at 3am by the local police, who found me staggering around town, wearing a large ornate lampshade for a hat, and belting out ‘I feel pretty, and witty and gay’ in a voice that would have given a macaw a migraine.

My outraged father implored the plods not to charge his pervy son for being drunk in charge of a mini-skirt and lampshade, and promised them he’d ground me for 10 years.

I vowed after that never again to dress up fancy, but my resolve crumbled when Benidorm staged its 2012 Gay Pride, and 65-yearold me decided to go as a native American. I certainly had the colour for it, having soaked up sunshine for weeks prior to the parade.

Because I loved the attention I got, I then pulled out all the stops to become a zombie for Halloween. I created the effect of rotting flesh by gluing thin slices of chorizo to my head, face and chest. Some folk were genuinely horrified and I was as pleased as punch.

I now know that, while being a zombie is perfectly acceptable

(except to religious nutters who condemn Halloween as ‘satanic’), dressing up as a native American is ‘incredibly offensive,’ according to a US website called Scary Mommy, which said ‘basically, when you dress up as an Indian, you’re dressing up as a stereotype of an entire continent of people.

You wouldn’t dress up as an Australian or as an African.

Another US website advised people not dress up as Mexicans for the annual Cinco de Mayo holiday, which celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over French forces in the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

It said if one wears a sombrero, or a stick-on moustache, or brandishes maracas, this is called ‘cultural appropriation’ and is to be avoided at all costs.

You can’t even dress up in religiously-themed costumes without having ‘cultural appropriation’ thrown in your face.

This happened when the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art recently made Catholic apparel the theme of an exhibition called ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.’ A great many Catholics were appalled at the sight of pop idol, Rihanna dressed as a pope.

Me? I thought she looked absolutely fabulous, and, given that the exhibition had the full support of the Vatican, I think those who shrieked ‘blasphemy’ were being hypersensitive jerks.

The world has many serious problems that need urgent attention. What people wear at fancy dress events most certainly isn’t one of them.

Walk with Nigel adds more to treatment fund

by Darren Parmenter CLOSE to 100 local friends, family and local residents - some in fancy dress - gave up their Sunday morning to be in the latest fundraising initiative in support of 10-year-old Nigel Watson.

The ‘Walk with Nigel’ began in Consum Square on Urbanisation La Marina at 10am and strolled around the area along a five-kilometre route, passing many bars on the way and relieving lots of people of those enjoying their coffee of all their change that filled a number of collecting buckets.

Nigel, himself, had always insisted on taking part in the walk and he joined in being proudly driven around in his own private buggy.

The walk was led in spectacular style by a number of local bikers which caused many to come out of their homes to see where the noise came from... only to be gently asked for a donation to the ever-growing fund to get Nigel the vital brain-stem treatment he needs.

Once the proud walkers returned to where they set off from, welcome refreshments were taken and the money raised was counted.

The final total of fees and other donations collected along the way was a remarkable €1,510.

A MEMBER of each of the Guardia Civil and Local Police living and working on the Orihuela Costa has been elected by local residents to represent their views to the council. Francisco Morales (Guardia Civil) and Isidro Rios (Local Police) will be the spokespersons for the NºX district and the Association of Residents in Los Filipinas, and will be seeking to improve their areas suffering from a lack of services enjoyed by those in the main Orihuela city.

Jellyfish red flags relaxed

by Ray Chadwick TORREVIEJA City Council has formally declared the La Mata beach open again after the recent spate of dangerous Portuguese Man-O-War jellyfish had invaded the area.

The red flag had been kept flying since May 19 when they were first identified, and since then more than 20 of the sting-

ing visitors have been reported.

The ban included swimming in the entire two-kilometre stretch of beach along La Mata, and followed a series of other restrictions along the area that included Alicante and nearby Guardamar del Segura.

Along the remaining beaches under the control of Torrevieja, yellow flags have been kept flying purely as a precaution,

alongside a special flag to make people aware of the possibility of the presence of other jellyfish.

It appears that the recent batch of this species of jellyfish reached the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar, and then taken by the strong currents towards the Costa Blanca.

Burglary gang caught PILAR de la Horadada was the setting for the arrest of six men by the Guardia Civil suspected of being involved in 21 local burglaries.

Aged between 17 and 39, they are from Ukraine, Moldavia, China, Morocco and Spain and all residents of Pilar. The investigation into a series of burglaries in one urbanisation began at the start of this year.

During searches of three of the suspects’ houses, several TVs, mobile phones, video consoles, games, fishing rods and watches from the different robberies were found.

THE Alicante Province has come in third place in Spain for the amount of people arrested for having, producing or sharing child pornography on the internet.

Between 2016 and 2017 there were 51 arrests, while so far this year there are 11 people who have committed these acts.

The internet is patrolled by the special Technological Crimes division of the National Police in Alicante on a daily basis, where a spokesperson said that “it is the worst kind of job that is not enjoyed by any of the officers.”

This is especially true of ‘the Dark Web’ where some of the most disturbing of images are found.

These searches allow the officers to decide whether the offenders simply access the illegal material online or are producing it.

In one case, officers watching a suspect outside his house noticed a number of children leaving his home.

Investigations showed many of the images were produced in his home.

IT’S now official. Authorisation has finally been given for Torrevieja and Orihuela to share the taxi service during the period June 16 to September 15 to enable them to cope with the expected increase in passenger demand.

This follows the official announcement from the Director General of Public Works, Transport and Mobility, Carlos Domingo, in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV).

This now allows those taxis licensed to work from Orihuela to operate from a number of ranks in Torrevieja, which include the Torrevieja Hospital and the bus station. Likewise, those based in Torrevieja can now offer their services from stands in Playa Flamenca, Zenia Boulevard, Cabo Roig and Villamartin... places that previously they were only allowed to drop passengers.

Carlos Domingo said: “With this authorisation and the agreement between the taxi organisations, we can now respond to passengers’ requirements.”

Violent attackers arrested in Alicante NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a man and a woman aged 31 and 34 in Alicante after breaking into a house and attacking the owner. They also tried to steal cash that was in the property.

According to reports in the Spanish media, the couple rang the bell and without a word pushed and barged past the victim into her home where they began to throw a number of objects around.

The pair then threatened their victim with a spray and a lighter, saying they would burn her face if she didn’t pay off a debt that she allegedly owed them.

She tried to flee the house, but was subsequently threatened with a box cutter blade and forced to hand over cash.

They also said they would kill her daughter if she didn’t pay.

The arrests came less than five days after the Organised Crime group of the Judicial Police Brigade took over the investigation and identified the couple responsible.

Spanish nationals holiday more FIGURES released by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that for the first four-month period of 2018, a total of 113,414 Spanish tourists stayed in Murcia region hotels.

This is the best set of data in the region’s history for the time of the year, representing a 2.4 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2017.

The overall increase for Murcia - including guests of all nationalities - was 9.8 per cent and up by 5.8 per cent... bucking the national trend of a reduction of 0.5 per cent.

Tabarca facelift plans announced FOLLOWING a visit by three Alicante councillors to the island of Tabarca, an announcement was made to make significant improvements to the area. The island has seen a number of areas abandoned and suffering from a lack of cleaning for some time, and so a commitment

has been made to improve the parks, green areas, sporting facilities, and access to the beaches. Alicante City Council has also contacted the Bishopric of Alicante to continue with the demolition and restoration of the ruined priest’s house next to the church.

Cartagena cattle exports drop DATA for the first four months of this year shows that the export of cattle from Cartagena has already fallen by 36 per cent.

Despite the fact that Ramadan is celebrated in Muslim countries at some point between January and April, it hasn’t prevented a drastic slowdown in this kind of trade for which Carta-

gena is the leading exporter in Europe.

The drop has also been blamed on the economic instability of the Arabic countries bordering the Mediterranean.

For the first third of 2018, a total of 164,129 head of cattle were exported compared to 103,681 in the same period 12 months ago.

Hitchhiker attacker in court A PRISON sentence of seven years is being sought for a man currently on trial in Elche after he attempted to sexually abuse a hitchhiker in Dolores.

The events date back to July 2015 when the victim was walking along the road seeking a lift when a man pulled alongside her in his van and picked her up. Almost immediately he made sexual advances to the woman and when he didn’t stop and drove his van away, she jumped from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries.

Chinese import fraudsters caught COLLABORATION between the National Police and the Spanish Tax Agency has led to the uncovering of a suspected €7 million fraud and a number of arrests.

In an operation carried out in several provinces, including Valencia and Alicante, 28 people - mainly of Chinese origin - are believed to be behind selling electric goods from China.

These include mobile phones and accessories and lighting products.

According to reports in the Spanish media, police sources suggest that the group have been operating since 2013.

They have been importing the goods into Spain and declaring their value through customs at a lower value.

Fifteen of the detainees have been arrested in Madrid, four in Illescas

(Toledo), three in Javea, two in Barcelona and one each in Zaragoza, Malaga, Alicante and Pontevedra.

The investigation began during the middle of last year thanks to a complaint filed in the Central Unit of Economic and Fiscal Crime. Once the proceedings got underway, the Bureau of Fraud Investigation (ONIF) of the Tax Agency joined in the hunt.

Police undergo fake training MAYOR of Torrevieja, Jose Manual Dolon, has announced that 20 Local Police officers are taking part in a course on how to deal with fake vehicle documents.

This basic training will especially concentrate on paperwork connected with nonSpanish registered vehicles and the methods by which they can quickly verify identities of drivers, and will be carried out in two phases until June 8. Dolon said that the course “is all part of improving the professional training of our officers which will enable them to do a better job.”

‘Silicon Valley’ comes to Alicante THE first phase of a ‘Science and Business Park ’ added to the University of Alicante (UA) has begun and will eventually see a plot of 35,000m2 of land being built on.

At an initial cost of just o v e r € 2 m i l l i o n ( f ro m a total budget of €30 million), the area will be leve l l e d fo l l o w e d b y n e w roads, pavements, street lighting and plants in

preparation for the major building works. The contract for this phase states that the work must be completed by September.

The eventual plan is to m a k e t h e a re a i n t o A l i c a n t e ’s o w n v e r s i o n o f ‘ S i l i co n Va l l e y ’ h o s t i n g more than 100 companies with science, research and development in their remit.

The construction of the

site will take place in phases, and the objective o f t h e UA i s t h a t w o r k will begin at the end of the year and finishing by the middle of 2020.

Two cyclists off their bikes A 32-YEAR-OLD cyclist has been seriously injured after being hit by a car in San Javier.

The incident happened as he travelled along the road between El Mirador to Casa Blanca.

After being stabilised by paramedics, the man was taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia where he was

placed in intensive care.

It is understood from the emergency 112 services that the cyclist suffered fractures to the face and collarbone.

He joined another cyclist in the hospital who had also been hit by a car at the junction of Los Pinos and Miguel de Cervantes in Murcia.

Stars come out for stroke victim MONDAY JUNE 25 sees a very special afternoon at The Club in Quesada.

When acts of fundraiser and entertainment agent Jax Lawson heard that her husband had had a stroke, they very quickly got together to put on a unique show to raise money to help him and Age Concern.

Ian used to help Jax at many of her fundraising show for Afghan Heroes and all the other charity shows that she has organised over the years. However, in April Ian suffered a stroke which has left him without the use of his left leg and arm.

Jax quickly found out that without the charities and a large network of friends and family, being a carer and a victim of this awful condition is a ver y lonely and scar y place.

Everything stated is true and the donkeys are tied by very short ropes to metal poles for hours unable to move and very distressed. Some are definitely in a lot of pain with spinal damage.

However no one ever mentions the horses who are treated just as bad and suffer unnecessarily.

They have to pull carriages with sometimes six people in. They are forced to fast trot through the village foaming from the mouth.

They often slip and sometimes fall on the slippery cobbles on the slope leading from Plaza Consitution whilst pulling a heavy carriage full of people.

They work all day from early morning till last thing at night and I have heard are not given water to drink. People have seen then being punched and kicked.

I think the donkeys and horses should be taken to rest during the hours of 1pm and 3pm as it is too hot for them to work at this time. Many tourists are unhappy to see these animals treated so badly, it certainly is n’t a good advert for the village.

I understand Angel Nozal from the PP party has been trying to make conditions better for these sad animals.

THE ongoing political crises that are hitting both Spain and Italy are causing fluctuations on the money markets and increasing the cost of borrowing.

As an example, the IBEX 35 - the index of Spanish bluechip companies - fell almost 2 . 5 p e r c e n t o n Tu e s d a y morning.

T h e s i t u at i o n i n S p a i n i s not being helped with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy facing a vote of no confidence today (Friday) in parliament, which comes as his gover nment continues to deal with the issues in Cataluña.

When Spain was going through its toughest period

during the economic crisis, the risk premium was considered the test of an economy’s health and a measure of inv e s t o r c o n f i d e n c e . S p a i n ’s risk premium, back in 2012 for example, was in excess of 500 basis points, triggering fears of a bailout.

On the stock exchange, in Tu e s d a y m o r n i n g t r a d i n g , losses in the banking sector dragged the index down: Santander (down 5.8 per cent), Sabadell (down 7 per cent), Bankia (down 5.1 per cent); BBVA and CaixaBank (down nearly 4 per cent). All listed shares in the IBEX 35 were in the red, and 16 out of the 34 companies included in the prestigious list lost more than 2 per cent.

ACCORDING to a report in Spanish media, Brussels is looking to impose a 5 per cent increase in funding given to Spain.

This has been due to a new method of calculation established to allocate funds that have previously been detrimental to the Eastern European countries and biased toward the southern ones.

Assuming the plans of the European Commission come to fruition, Spain will benefit from €34 billion of funding between 2021 and 2027 at 2018 prices.

Even though Spain is one of the southern countries, they score very poorly in areas such as education and youth unemployment and makes it a candidate to get an increase in cash.

The EU’s cohesion policy has always been one of the pillars of the European budget. It seeks to reduce economic and social disparities among countries and regions through cohesion funds, rural development aid and the European Social Fund. However, along with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), these funds are dwindling. Under the long-term 2021-2027 budget proposal, the Juncker Commission, named after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, is suggesting cuts of around 6 per cent to the common agricultural policy and cohesion policy programmes in order to meet the new European priorities.

Animals found in drug raids GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested 30 people suspected of alleged drug dealing from 17 separate locations in Torrevieja.

Those detained are 21 men and nine women, aged between 25 and 60, and all but two have already been sent to prison pending judicial proceedings.

In one of the houses searched, officers found 20 dogs, three horses and a ferret in appalling conditions with no food or water.

They also discovered stashes of 325 doses of cocaine, 35 doses of heroin, eight doses of LSD, 285 grams of marihuana, 324 grams of hashish, an air rifle and €7,800 in cash.

Grants to help 153 jobless TORREVIEJA has been given a grant of €2.4 million towards its Youth Employment Plan that is expected to help in the creation of 153 jobs.

The award was announced by Councillor Victor Ferrandez which came as part of two separate subsidies, and exceeds the €1.4 million given as part of a similar scheme for 2017.

Examples of the jobs available - both skilled and unskilled - include general administration, caretakers, lifeguards, architects, and vets.

ONE of my favourite TV programmes, that’s to say one that is less awful than most of the others, is Grand Designs hosted by designer and writer, Kevin McCloud.

It’s never an easy road that the subjects of each programme apparently travel, because without fail, they seem to underestimate the costs of their project and end up having to borrow more money.

Who in their right minds would undertake a major refurbishment or new build, often with projected costs running into many hundreds of thousands of pounds, without having their estimates checked and rechecked by qualified people?

And if they have indeed been checked then perhaps those professionals should look for work in a less demanding environment.

Only inmates of certain institutions would put themselves in situations like

Here’s a suggestion though: start in the early spring and give yourself more time.

The other side of the coin is that even with expert advice, some of these char-

acters decide that they know better and plough on regardless, often project managing (whatever that means) their own build. And guess what, they almost always fall flat on their faces.

Repeatedly one of the biggest holdups seems to be the manufacture and installation of windows, because they are never your ordinary run of the mill windows, but tinted quadruple glazed; bullet proof; one way; mirrored jobbies.

Having waited months for these beauties to arrive, they then often find they won’t fit. Oh darn. Let’s knock a bit of brickwork out.

On top of all this chaos and financial uncertainty, many of the couples concerned decide to have another baby.

Stuck in a small caravan on-site with the two toddlers they already have, surrounded by a sea of mud and now another kid on the way.

Yes I can see the attraction.

But amazingly in spite of all this, most of the stories end happily.

McCloud always manages to wax lyrical about the finished build, but it must be an effort sometimes.

A cross between a poet and an architect, you get the impression that even if the finished house looks like a toilet bowl with balconies, he will find something complimentary to say about it... then go off and laugh himself silly.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

I THINK I left my poor readers in suspense last week, which means you are all now dying to know what happens to the verb OÍR in the present tense. Worse still, some of you might have gone to look it up and been frightened into thinking it is, horror of horrors an ‘irregular verb,’ which in fact is not the case, although it is a little odd. Oír is one of our standard -ir verbs. It has its own ideas about what to do in the first person singular, as is the case with a number of other standard verbs we have already looked at. It also suffers from some adjustments to its spelling, in common with a few other similar verbs.

Here is the conjugation in full: Oigo Oímos Oyes Oís Oye Oyen As you will see the letter y comes into play in three of the forms for no apparent reason, but in fact the reasons are good sound linguistic ones linked to ease of pronunciation.

To put it simply, ‘oyes’ is a great deal easier to get one’s mouth round than ‘oes.’ Just to digress for a moment, there is a close relationship between the letters ‘i’ and ‘y’ in Spanish and sometimes there is a substitution of one letter for another in various word changes.

Verb oír and standard verb sentences The name of the ‘y’ is ‘igriega’, ‘the Greek i’ (at least it was, they have now changed the name of it but that’s another story) and sometimes the ‘i’ is referred to as the ‘ilatina,’ the Latin i.

Going back to the verb ‘oír’ you will notice that in the first and second persons plural, there is an accent placed on the í vowel to distinguish it as a separate beat from the ‘o.’

Somehow I’m not sure I’ve convinced you with any of that explanation, so if that’s the case then I recommend you try out this one which works wonders for some people but not for others, ‘that’s just how it is!’

Help rescued dogs find a new life “THERE’S always a need for volunteers in animal rescue in Spain,” said Nick Moore, volunteer at A SOKA animal refuge in Orihuela.

“So many animals are mistreated but we remain positive because many good things happen all the time.”

Nick volunteers at ASOKA where many animals arrive in terrible conditions. They have boxes of puppies dumped there along with many abandoned dogs and cats. Recently one dog arrived that had spent its life tied up in a field.

Nick added “One major problem is that most strays are not chipped, yet within five minutes we can call and reunite an owner with their chipped animal.”

Locally rescues are full. So could you help your local rescue? Nick explained, “ There are some basic ways to help.

Make sure your pet is chipped, spayed and can’t escape your property. Many people foster! Being a foster is lifechanging for the dog and perhaps for you!

“The animal is not trapped in a cage so it can relax and be much happier while it waits for adoption. We have foster dogs with travel dates so you wouldn’t be lumbered with an animal.

The number one thing they love about their new aids is that they don’t have to strain to hear any more. But the number one thing they can’t get used to is the background noise.

Despite the complex microchip and tremendous advances in hearing aid technology, background noise can still be a problem.

After probably many years of not hearing much background noise the sudden ability to hear everyday noises like rustling paper and plates clashing together can take time to get used to. It can be very challenging.

Think about the last time you went to a restaurant and found yourself bombarded by noise: other people’s conversation, music in the background, clanging dishes and cutlery, noise from the kitchen, etc.

Now think about the ways you

could minimise the difficulties you have the next time you dine out. You may find these suggestions helpful: 1. Make reservations in advance. Then you can specify your table requirements. Pick a table in the least noisy part of the restaurant (eg away from the kitchen, bar, etc) in a well-lit area and sit with your back to the window, so the light is on your companion’s face and not in your eyes.

2. Plan ahead by picking a quieter restaurant. Try to find carpeted restaurants that have chairs with rollers on the legs

(thus preventing an annoying scraping sound when they are moved).

3. Pick the best day and time (not Friday nights!) to dine out.

4. Look on the restaurant’s website to preview the menu.

And ask the waiter/waitress for a printed specials menu.

5. Request that staff turn down background music (you are probably not the only patron bothered by the volume of the music).

6. Tell the host and waiter, as well as your dining companions, that you have a hearing

loss and that it will help you if they slow down a bit, speak a little bit louder, and face you directly.

7. Remember that even people with normal hearing experience greater difficulty in a noisy listening environment than they do in a quiet listening environment. So, don’t expect to do as well with your hearing aids in the noisy restaurant as you do in the quiet of your home.

8. Relax and enjoy the fine food and the company, even if you don’t catch every word.

In July 1918, their Bolshevik captors herded the doomed family into a basement in Yekaterinburg under the pretext that their photograph was to be taken.

The Tsar and Tsarina Alexandra, their daughters, Olga (22), Tatiana (21), Maria (19), Anastasia (17) and Alexei (13) fell under a hail of bullets. The family’s corpses and those of three loyal servants and family doctor were hurled down a mine and later burned.

From Kaliningrad to the Bering Straits, a distance about 5,700 miles, the Russian people this year lament their loss. Monuments and museums, art galleries, movies, television documentary and drama, church services, it is hard to forget the tragedy ex-

The blood of the martyrs was that of England, Denmark, Greece, Germany, and Romania, Habsburg dynasty, Russia and Serbia (then a powerful state).

The martyred Romanovs could lay claim to being the e s s e n c e o f E u r o p e ’s r o y a l houses. Theirs was not so much a Russian as a European dynasty.

There were 53 Romanovs l i v i n g i n R u s s i a w h e n Ts a r Nicholas II abdicated on March 15, 1917. Eighteen were slaughtered in the most heartwrenching circumstances; 35 made their way to safety. Imperial Russia’s gold reserves weighed 1,311 tonnes, which is $ 6 0 b i l l i o n a t t o d a y ’s v a l u e .

This too went west and not to the workers.

THERE was a good turnout at the San Luis / La Siesta Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Group held at the Casa Ventura earlier this week.

They were given an informative and useful presentation by Councillor Carmen Morate and Eco Parque manager Sr Marco Guirao Bernabeu who advised the meeting on the best use of the Eco Parque and the facilities available there.

Residents were interested to learn

about all of the different products and materials that the Eco Parque is able to take for recycling.

A slide show presentation showed the many varied materials accepted at the Parque ranging from car engine oil to toxic chemicals to all domestic appliances. The group was also shown how items such as mattresses were broken down into their separate materials for recycling. Eco Parque leaflets were distrib-

uted to better encourage the use of the facility.

Also discussed were recent incidents in the area concerning fire damage to three cars after a stolen car was set alight, graffiti, three stolen tortoises and a car break-in.

The next meeting will be at 4.30pm at the Casa Ventura in San Luis on Monday June 25 after which there will be a break in July and August.

THE Costa Blanca Blues MCFC official supporters club have just held a victory parade.

They travelled from the Breeze Bar in Benijofar to Quesada to celebrate the League Championship and all of the other records that Manchester City have broken this season.

Their activities have been filmed for Granada Reports and had a great time playing music and singing City

songs, followed with a fish and chip supper back at the Breeze Bar. The Breeze Bar is their headquarters where they host a quiz every Wednesday at 4pm and their AGM will be held in the bar on June 11 at 6.30pm followed by a pie and chip supper.

A total of 43,000 car owners voted for 13 victors for the different categories including Best Family Car and Best Green Car. “For the second year running, we wanted to use our New Car Awards to

Lifestyle factors were especially important in deciding the winners this year with reliability, running costs, appearance and practicability packing a punch with voters.

Durability was key for the dog owner prize, while

space, comfort and safety were important for family motors.

Drivers also answered questions on their overall satisfaction with vehicles and whether they would recommend them to others.

Auto Trader’s Baker congratulated “all our well-deserving winners for continuing to push the boundaries of innovation and offering car buyers fantastic choice to suit every budget.”

A BRIT who won €17.6 million on the UK’s National Lottery has showcased his line-up of flash motors to the media.

Tom Naylor, 62, worked as a lorry driver and owned a Ford Granada before winning the fortune with his wife in 2001. He dreamed of one day owning a supercar. Now he has six, not to overlook a top-of-the-range 4x4 he calls his ‘shopping trolley.’

“The first car was a Jaguar XJR which I bought 17 years ago when I first won the lottery. Over the years I have bought more and more cars. Now I have one for every day of the week,” he told media.

“If I was doing it myself I would be spending all day washing them,” Naylor said.

wife’s favourite car. But Rita cannot drive so husband Tom ‘chauffeurs’ her around in it.

His best-loved vehicle is the Jaguar XJ220. “One day I will own one of those,” he told Rita after spotting it once when out driving his lorry.

“As you can see with Tom winning the Lotto, it is life changing,” a National Lottery spokesman said.

How the new ITV changes affect Classics

by David Hudson DESPITE reports there would be new equipment and paperless checking when the new laws started on May 20 this has already happened during the last three years in parts of Spain.

The big change for classic and old vehicles is that the ‘favorable con defectos leves’ will disappear. This gave the ITV station the leniency when it was a borderline decision.

For instance if the classic was looked after and the kilometres were low then it would tell the tester that this was an owner that was not reckless and cared for the vehicle. Being low kilometres meant that the vehicle only came out on Sundays and fiestas when the traffic was reduced.

Making a safer period of travel also the type of vehicle would be taken into account. A Porsche or MG would be driven faster than a 2CV or 600. This would allow the tester to make a decision in giving the classic another year on the roads.

Now this has been taken away you need to fully understand why the ITV said with defects and put it right.

Don’t leave things to the last minute

Classic cars and the narrow streets of Spain don’t always get on. especially if it’s joints, bearings or suspension and rust, as correct parts can take a time. If the vehicle fails an ITV test then you cannot drive it on the road and would have to have it transported by a grua.

You can now choose which ITV station to retest and you can have the ITV test up to one month in advance.

The vehicle must be checked in the province that the registered owner is resident in. Any modification to the vehicle must be registered with Trafico and checked before the regular ITV is due. The modifications includes tow b a r, t y r e s a n d w h e e l s , s u s p e n s i o n , seats and changing them after it has passed the ITV is illegal.

One of the problems for classic cars is having drum brakes that give a suspect result because of the action compared to disc brakes that the testing m a c h i n e s a r e s e t u p f o r. To g e t t h e best result make sure that the drum has not worn unevenly, that means the s h o e s d o n o t b r a k e e v e n l y. G e t t h e drums skimmed at right angles. It only takes about 30 minutes to do.

To help with the improved emission controls and if the classic has only travelled short distances add UK’s Forte specialist injection cleaner to the petrol and drive approximately 50 kilometres to clean out the system.

Change the engine oil, oil and air filters just before the test and replace old plugs and leads.

If you wish to have it registered as a historic vehicle to have a lenient test the laws have changed. It must now be 30 years or over and the vehicle must be either the original or the principle components should be the original type of engine, brakes, steering, suspension or bodywork.

Historic plates do not exempt you from the vehicle tax.

sport EARLIER in May, two races were contested, over a planned four laps, by 14 members sailing nine boats.

Race one got off to a lively start, in three separate tranches, the two Laser 2000s, the Hartley 12.2 and the Quba take front stage, closely followed by a Sailfish 18, the Areaz 20 and the Gamba.

Taking it rather leisurely and doing their run in from nearer Lo Pagan than the start was Mistral, the other Sailfish 18 in the fleet.

The course included a tricky leg near the moored ferry making all boats aware that they needed to get their tactics right.

Soon a pattern established with the Lasers taking the lead followed by the single handed Hartley and Quba, then the Gamba, a Sailfish, the Araez finally the second Sailfish.

The finish was a close run thing between the two Lasers who were separated by just 22 seconds.

Race two, what a different story!

San Miguel Golf Society at Vistabella GLORIOUS sunshine and a cooling breeze made for perfect golfing conditions at Vistabella for the 40 members and four guests.

With the relatively new seven holes still bedding in, those opting to use buggies had to stay off those fairways.

Unsurprisingly, this led to the less mobile of the membership taking longer to complete the course.

The famous undulating greens were, as ever, in great condition. Given the trickiness of reading curvaceous putting surfaces five two’s were recorded on the par 3’s. Notably Robin Eastman, holing out a 60 foot putt on the 11th.

Despite the former two’s, scoring was a tad on the low side with only four players breaking par. Hugh Reilly topped the scoring with 39 points although he almost forgot to hand in his card.

The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Norman McBride (32), 3rd Keith Stevenson (33), 2nd Chris Hamblett (33), and 1st Charlie Harkin (37).

On the next lap and with boats scattered around everywhere, the two Lasers and the Hartley were disqualified for missing one of the marks in their attempts to try and keep upright, leaving the field wide open for those who could manage to keep their boats going.

The race officer wisely shortened the course to three laps, although no one heard the signal and continued to do a fourth. Eventually all boats finished, but Mistral had her foresail jam, could not pick up her mooring and landed on the reef. Again the support boat came to her assistance and towed her off.

Silver Category: 4th Gerald Bannon (32), 3rd Steve Belshaw (33 on CB), 2nd Norman Cahill (33 on CB) and 1st Hugh Reilly (39).

Gold Category: 4th Eva Petersson (34 on CB), 3rd John Osborne (36), 2nd Robin Eastman (37 on CB) and 1st Theo Boelhouwer (37 on CB).

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s went to Mick Seymour, Alan Hill, John Osborne, Noel Bannon. Prizes were presented to the winners by the prize sponsor, Ron Stenhouse, of Stenhouse Flooring.

The Abacus was won by John Parker who, having won the Abacus at Mar Menor a mere fortnight ago, is in danger of monopolising this prestigious award. John will surely appreciate this week’s Abacus prize of a free golf lesson from Vistabella professional Adrian Rudge.

Best guest was Sven Hendenstrom.

In the sole match play tie, Hugh Reilly won two up against Theo Boelhouwer.

El Raso Golf Society ON Friday May 25 32 members and guests made the yearly trip to Lo Romero, a course that never disappoints!

The competition was a Stableford format and the results were as follows: NTP’s hole 5 Steve Sayers, hole 7 John Dodds, hole 12 Liz Roberts and hole 15 Pete Cleaver. Best guest with 36 points was Ged McWilliams.

The best front nine with 19 points was won by Pete Cleaver and the best back nine was won by Morag Turner with 22 points. Third with 36 points was Malcolm Foskett, whilst John Dodds came second with 37 points.

The winner with a credible 40 points was Arty Crammon. And finally, the winner of the prestigious gnome trophy this month was Phylis Venables.

After the game they travelled back to the Olde 9th on Quesada for presentations and welcoming refreshments.

Marabu Golf Society at Bonalba FOR this month’s meeting a group of 24 players visited the established course at Bonalba taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

There was a distinct threat of heavy rain on the way to the course but this burnt off early for a splendid day and the course was enjoyed by all and it is probably the greenest course they have played this year.

The members played for the ‘Whacker’ trophy in memory of Shaun Dear.

Their next fixture is the Benidorm away trip on Sunday and Monday followed by the society day at Alenda on June 28.
