Support for gender violence victims

GRATEFUL: Councillor Motse Villaverde (centre) accepts another donation from the local charity.

THE Original Charity Shop and Library of Javea has presented a cheque for €1,230 to the Department of Equality at the town hall. The money is already planned to be invested in a programme to aid the recovery of the victims of gender violence.

The group has also generously donated a similar amount to the Raquel Paya School in Denia.

The funds were raised by the charity as a result of sponsorship money that came from a number of volunteers who took part in the recent Mirador Challenge.

Councillor for Equality, Montse Villaverde, once again took the opportunity to thank the charitable group for their work and for choosing her department for their latest collaboration. Villaverde also mentioned that the charity had already donated €650 following sales in the shop during the recent Women’s Day.

Instead, a former IMF official Carlo Cottarelli who is known to be close to Brussels and in favour of austerity, has been appointed interim Prime Minister which means that there is bound to be another election.

The right dislike the snub which has seen ‘Mr Scissors’ as he is nicknamed in Italy - taking on the role of PM and they in turn are calling for the impeachment of President Sergio Mattarella, although with 64 governments since the war, Italy is no stranger to political chaos.

So that is one of the so-called European PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) adding to the economic problem and it has been joined by Spain.

The right of centre Partido Popular (PP) under Mariano Rajoy is another minority government which currently relies on the support of the new antiCatalan independence party Ciudadanos plus a few independents to rule.

THE last week has thrown up a number of economic fears which are brought about because of political instability in some of the most important members of the European Union.

Italy and Spain sit at number three, four in the list of Eurozone countries with economies that are only exceeded by Germany and France, but both are suddenly in turmoil.

Although it has a history of coalition governments, the latest Italian problem is seriously affecting the economy with the value of bonds dropping and in actual fact it is even hurting the value of the euro against other currencies.

It looked as if Italy was to be run by a coalition of the right with quite clear anti-immigration and Eurosceptic views, but when the President - who fulfils a mainly ceremonial role - refused to approve the appointment of Prof Paolo Savona, an 81-year-old economist who had

It has not been any secret that a number of former PP members at national and local level have been involved in corrupt practices, but the results of the recent Gürtel case which saw senior PP officials jailed for decades has spurred the opposition parties to demand that Mariano Rajoy should resign.

Understandably, he denies any knowledge of any wrong-doing and there appears to be no evidence of his involvement, although as leader of a party which has been littered with ‘troughiteers,’ it is argued that he should actually have had some idea of what was going on.

Due to the fact that the PP appear to have benefited financially from the corruption (albeit possibly unwittingly), the leader of the socialist PSOE Pedro Sanchez has called for a vote of no confidence in Mariano Rajoy.

Almost immediately, the leader of the third party in Spanish politics Pablo Iglesias of Podemos (who has just survived his own vote of no-confidence, called by him over his purchase of a €600,000 property) confirmed that his party would vote against Mr Rajoy.

Between the two parties, they control 156 votes in parliament out of 350, but they need a majority in order to see a new election and this will realistically only occur if they can persuade Ciudadanos to vote with them and that is highly unlikely.

So although it looks as if there will be no change of government, the political uncertainty in Spain has also affected the stock exchange adversely and added to the general economic uncertainty about the euro and the eurozone.

Residents warned of firework dangers

by David Bennett OWNERS of apartments in the Luceros area of Alicante will face fines of €600 if they fail to observe some basic security and safety regulations during the forthcoming fiestas in the city.

The City Council has already notified residents that it is prohibited for people to be on the balconies that are potentially ‘in the line of fire’ during the firework displays. In addition, windows must be closed at all times.

The displays begin tomorrow (Saturday) and across this and next weekend (June 9

and 10). The events culminate with the main Hogueras week between June 16 and 24, when the large wooden statues are set ablaze.

During last year’s events, large numbers of police were deployed to car r y out house-to-house calls to ensure people shut all windows and cleared balconies after two major incidents involving rockets; one of which smashed the g lass after landing and exploding on an open terrace.

According to reports in the Spanish media, it reached a point last year that the fire authorities threatened to suspend the fireworks if the precautions were not taken.

Safer cycling encouraged IMPROVE road safety through better education, and influence cycling behaviour from an early age. These were two of the objectives for the annual campaign organised by Denia’s Local Police throughout the municipality’s schools.

A total of 667 students took part in this year’s project which demonstrated how a bicycle works, to use it responsibility without risk to the rider and other road users, the meaning of road signs and signals and the importance of wearing a helmet.

ACCORDING to a recently undertaken local survey, 60 per cent of the residents of Denia have asked for the Carrer de Marques de Campo to be made

a pedestrian area.

That support drops slightly to 56 per cent among the businesspeople operating in the main commercial area.

Help for self-help

by Mark Rogers AROUND 325 walkers and runners gathered at the weekend in Benidorm to show their support for Anemone, a self-help group for women with breast cancer. In advance of the main event, 15 athletes ran throughout the night passing through Benissa, Bernia and Finestrat before arriving in Benidorm at 9am.

The first of the day’s races began at 10am with a noncompetitive walk. Around 20 minutes later the 9km run got underway, followed by the turn of the children at 11.30. The younger runners were especially delighted to receive their medals for taking part.

In the senior race, the first man to cross the line was Ruben Caballero in a time of 27 minutes, 19 seconds. In the women’s event, Ann Selby won with a time of 33 minutes, 58 seconds.

The plan would be to slowly close off the road to traffic little-by-little, adding to the times that it is already closed such as weekends, holidays and during the summer evenings.

Councillors Maria Josep Ripoll and Rafa Carrio announced the result of the survey earlier this week and presented an artist’s impression of what the area would like once it has been finally closed and renovated.

One of the conditions of those that supported the pedestrianisation plans (84 per cent of local people and 94 per cent of business owners) was that the work should only take place once alternative car parking areas were available.

Not everyone was happy at the proposals, with some local opposition politicians predicting that the area will ‘die during the winter months.’

by Darren Parmenter ACCORDING to figures just released from La Unio de Llauradors, the production of almonds for this current season for the Valencia Region will see a reduction of over 7 per cent compared to last year.

This accounts for approximately 6,500 tons compared to 7,010 in 2017.

However, the Alicante Province as a whole will see a decrease of around 10 per cent with some local anomalies. For example, the Vega Baja has seen an increase in almond production by 11 per cent whereas both Marina Alta and Baixa have fallen by 36 per cent. Wherever the crops are located, all the growers are continually concerned about the lack of rainfall.

In addition, the presence of the Xylella fastidiosa bacteria in the northern regions of Alicante - as well as the almond wasp - is a further concern and if not controlled could see swathes of the crop wiped out. Surprisingly the price of almonds has also dropped by 35 per cent and is now at the same levels of five or six years ago which means that growers will be looking for financial assistance from the government.

Outrage at bike killer’s bail decision

by David Bennett THE driver who killed three cyclists from Javea last year has been released from prison on bail pending trial.

The 29-year-old driver has paid €7,000 and part of the bail conditions is she must appear on the first and 15th of each month before the local magistrate.

Currently, everything is indicating that the trial will be delayed for some time, since the judge is still waiting for forensic reports connected to the people injured in the incident.

The horrific crash hap-

pened early in the morning of May 7 last year on the N332 between Denia and Oliva. The driver, who’d spent most of the night partying, crossed into the opposite lane and hit six cyclists.

Two of them were killed instantly with a third dying later in hospital; two others survived with serious injuries. The driver was tested positive at the scene for alcohol and drugs.

News that the woman has been released has caused great consternation among the population of Javea, and none more so with the victim’s family and friends.

Armed bank robber caught

CONCERN: Price of almonds fall by 35 per cent in a year

THE Special Operations Group (GEO) of the National Police has arrested a 66-year-old man in Madrid, believed to be behind attempted armed bank raids in Alicante and Campello at the start of May. It’s understood that the man has a 35-year record of such attacks, and is alleged to have carried out nine raids in one month alone.

The man had been on the run since April after taking advantage of a prison permit, and he was found sleeping in a hotel in Getafe with a loaded gun.

FOR many people that live on urbanisations across the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa, it’s not unusual to experience being left in the dark thanks to a lack of street lighting.

One such area of Benitachell has been in that situation since last August... but there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

The local council has decided to change all the street lamps and renew the electric systems on the Urbanisation Valle del Portet, beginning with 27 new LED lights in Carrer Vista Ifach.

The problems in this area began after a major storm caused the umpteenth break in the lighting network after water seeped into the old lampposts. It was costing more and more money to find and repair the faults and so it made more economic sense in the medium term to completely replace the entire network.

Not only will the new LED lights be cheaper to run, the amount of light pollution will also be reduced.

Budding artists exhibit work M AYOR o f F i n e s t rat , J u a n Francisco Pérez, has attended the opening of an art exhibition by students of the Escola d’Art de Finestrat.

More than 60 children have completed a special course, and their work is on display until Monday in the Els Nostres Mestres library.

The mayor congratulated all the children on their work and handed out special diplomas of appreciation.

Boat on the rocks THE Salvamar Mirfak belonging to the Maritime Rescue has rescued four crew members from a pleasure boat that had run aground off the northern coast of Campello. On

board, they found the men unharmed from their experience and the stranded boat was later towed back into the safety of the local port.

came caught in the propeller which caused a loss of control and allowed the boat to drift on to nearby rocks... an area that is difficult to access by land.

Uncontrolled dogs could kill ONE of our readers, Sharon Smith has shared a horrific story with RTN which she wants to act as a warning to other dog lovers and the following is her story: “On Thursday of last week I was on my morning walk with my elderly dog Chellie around the streets of the area where we live in Moraira. I had just stopped to give her a drink of water and then we continued on down Calle Elche, but as we passed one property, a dog appeared.

Quite normally, they said hello to each other but then another one came and another and several more until there were between five and seven (I am not sure how many as it all happened too quickly to actual count them).

They gathered around my poor dog then in seconds they started to attack her. I shouted for the owner, a lady appeared and we tried to fight off her dogs, she grabbed one and fell on the floor with it in her arms whilst I was also knocked to the floor.

By this time my poor dog was yelping and screaming as they were literally dragging her down the street and all trying to bite her. How she screamed, it made me try to get up quickly but one of the dogs had my foot and trainer in its mouth.

I kicked it off and used my rucksack and lead hitting and screaming at them to get off and

Eventually, I freed my dog and the owner shouted for me to run, but where to? We ran down the street and round the corner ringing

door bells as I went and eventually an elderly gentleman came out and opened the gate for us as the dogs had now chased us to his gate.

We wrapped my dog in towels and I managed to call my husband to come with the car quickly as our dog had been attacked. Luckily we only

live two minutes away and he was there straight away. We lifted our poor dog into the car, at the moment the lady owner came and found us and tried to find out what had happened to our dog but we had no time for her and we rushed our dog to the veterinaria.

She had seven large gaping wounds that all need multiple stitches and other bite holes that needed stitching up, in all over a hundred stitches, ears, stomach, chest, sides, legs and anus.

After Chellie was treated we went to the Guardia Civil to report the incident and they confirmed that they knew of these dogs and that there is an ongoing case against them for previous attacks!

The Guardia Civil officer said we must bring the veterinaria bills to them to pursue for payment but it is not just the payment of the bills that we want, it is to prevent this happening again to someone else, perhaps an elderly person and their dog or perhaps a child.

I felt frightened at the time and more so afterwards when I think what could have happened so easily!

When I posted this on Facebook to the local ‘Moraira dog’ page and to my page loads of people have commented that they no longer walk past this house or down this road because of these dogs.”

Football fest gets famous backing FORMER Spanish football team manager, Vicente del Bosque, has confirmed that the La Nucia Sports City will be one of the venues in July for the football camp that bears his name.

Mayor of La Nucia, Bernabe Cano, announced the move in Madrid earlier this week and also confir med that de Bosque himself will be in the municipality this summer.

Thousands of children between the ages of six and 15 will be taking par t in the Campus Vicente del Bosque this summer from across five continents, and at venues in Madrid, Estepona, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and La Nucia.

BECAUSE I was exceptionally fastidious as a kid, avoiding all forms of rough-and-tumble that might leave dirt marks on my clothes or skin, I reacted with outrage when my parents announced they were taking me to a primary school fancy dress event dressed as a chimney sweep.

Despite the colossal tantrum I threw when I was told that this would mean donning rags and having my face and hands smeared with soot, mum and dad persisted and off I was dragged to a ghastly prepubescent gathering of mini witches and fairies and werewolves and pirates and the like.

Prizes were handed out for the best costumes, and, to my disgust, I was awarded one. I had to get up on stage to receive an Enid Blyton book. This exposure doubly compounded my intense discomfit at appearing in public with a smutty face and filthy clothes.

I sulked for a week and trashed my prize. I HATED Enid Blyton books.

When I was 18 some friends

The perils of fancy dress pressured me into accompanying them to a ‘vice versa’ party. Men were to wear women’s clothes, and the women were to come as men.

I reluctantly agreed. I was given a mini-skirt and a wig by my friend Derek, but had to filch frilly underwear, stockings, shoes with stiletto heels and a bra from my mother’s wardrobe. Of course I didn’t tell my parents about the party.

But they found out anyway because I was dragged home drunk as a skunk at 3am by the local police, who found me staggering around town, wearing a large ornate lampshade for a hat, and belting out ‘I feel pretty, and witty and gay’ in a voice that would have given a macaw a migraine.

My outraged father implored the plods not to charge his pervy son for being drunk in charge of a mini-skirt and lampshade, and promised them he’d ground me for 10 years.

I vowed after that never again to dress up fancy, but my resolve crumbled when Benidorm staged its 2012 Gay Pride, and 65-yearold me decided to go as a native American. I certainly had the colour for it, having soaked up sunshine for weeks prior to the parade.

Because I loved the attention I got, I then pulled out all the stops to become a zombie for Halloween. I created the effect of rotting flesh by gluing thin slices of chorizo to my head, face and chest. Some folk were genuinely horrified and I was as pleased as punch.

I now know that, while being a zombie is perfectly acceptable

(except to religious nutters who condemn Halloween as ‘satanic’), dressing up as a native American is ‘incredibly offensive,’ according to a US website called Scary Mommy, which said ‘basically, when you dress up as an Indian, you’re dressing up as a stereotype of an entire continent of people.

You wouldn’t dress up as an Australian or as an African.

Prison for wife attacker A PROVINCIAL COURT in Alicante has sentenced a resident of Javea to two years in prison after causing injuries to his wife.

The incident took place back in September 2013 when the guilty man, a Moroccan, got involved in an argument with his partner, during which he eventually pushed her through a glass door.

Her wounds needed a number of stitches after a tourniquet had been applied to stop the bleeding getting out of control. The most severe laceration measured nine centimetres on the back of her right knee.

On top of the prison sentence, the judge imposed a 300-metre exclusion zone between the man and his wife and a fine of €3,300 plus costs.

Another US website advised people not dress up as Mexicans for the annual Cinco de Mayo holiday, which celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over French forces in the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

It said if one wears a sombrero, or a stick-on moustache, or brandishes maracas, this is called ‘cultural appropriation’ and is to be avoided at all costs.

You can’t even dress up in religiously-themed costumes without having ‘cultural appropriation’ thrown in your face.

This happened when the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art recently made Catholic apparel the theme of an exhibition called ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.’ A great many Catholics were appalled at the sight of pop idol, Rihanna dressed as a pope.

Me? I thought she looked absolutely fabulous, and, given that the exhibition had the full support of the Vatican, I think those who shrieked ‘blasphemy’ were being hypersensitive jerks.

The world has many serious problems that need urgent attention. What people wear at fancy dress events most certainly isn’t one of them.

New National Police station - possibly

by Darren Parmenter DEPENDING on the outcome of the current political uncertainty in Madrid, Spain’s Minister for the Interior has said that a new National Police Station for Benidorm will be included in the government’s plans.

Jose Ignacio Zoido made his comments during a recent visit to the tourist capital, explaining that all is dependent on a potential censure motion that could change the plans.

Benidorm has been asking for a new building for some years to house the National Police station, since the current one located in the centre of the old town has become too small and obsolete.

The City Council has spent some time looking for a suitable location and has drafted a project valued at €10 million that was only awaiting

The intention is for the works to be included in this year’s infrastructure plan... but all could be potentially delayed or even abandoned altogether should there be a change of government.

If it does get the go-ahead, the new National Police station will be located near to the Benidorm Court building and the bus station.

Ladybirds are go!

LADYBIRDS are being used in Denia in an attempt to wipe out another species of insect that are currently damaging trees in the municipality. The Adalia bipunctata, commonly known as the twospot ladybird, has been deployed by the local Parks and Gardens department to kill the invading psylla - a type of woodlice - without causing any further damage themselves.

Speaking with the Spanish media, Councillor Josep Crespo said that such schemes are being successfully carried out across Spain and is more preferable to using insecticides.

A BONFIRE got out of hand in the Benissa Campo near Teulada earlier in the week.

So quickly did it appear to be spreading that the fire service decided to bring in a helicopter to douse the flames and eye witnesses say that whilst not a weekly occurrence, fires are already occurring in the general area and this is not the first time over the past two months that helicopters have been called in.

Gill Reynolds I used to book a decent hotel with full board for 50 euros a night. Next week for the same money I have got a studio with a bed.

Final piece of fraud jigsaw NATIONAL POLICE have dismantled an alleged criminal organisation in Benidorm, dedicated to a number of social security frauds that enabled illegal workers to qualify for benefit payments or Spanish residency.

A total of 38 people were detained in the operation, and the fraud amount exceeded €120,000.

Based on information given by a Moroccan national who was himself a victim, the investigation began in January 2016 and the alleged ringleader of the gang was caught almost two years ago.

However, it’s only as a result of the third and final phase of the operation that a further 19 arrests were made.

An important summer ahead

Safer streets for Benissa’s women BENISSA Council is looking to make the municipality safer, especially for women.

A group that includes council officials and any local people wanting to take part, will be touring the area today (Friday) to identify possible public spaces that are considered too dark or have traffic issues, and is one of the measures contained in the Municipal Equality Plan to aid future designs of the area.

Once the walk has taken place and the problem areas identified, the Local Police will then be consulted as to the potential solutions.

THE number of British tourists coming to stay in Benidorm’s hotels this summer is going to be closely monitored.

This follows on from the figures from August last year when the tourist capital sold 25,000 fewer rooms to the British than in 2016, and the fact that there has already been a 5 per cent drop for the first two weeks of May. Among the explanations for this reduction are more British holidaymakers choosing to return to countries such as Tunisia, Turkey

CONCERN: British tourism down 5 per cent in early May in Benidorm. or Egypt following the past few years of political and terrorist issues. That market, according to hotel association HOSBEC, is growing by up to 80 per cent.

Another cause could be in the increase in the ‘underground economy’ that sees more tourists staying in privately offered accommodation booked via the internet and charging prices that the hotels cannot compete with.

There are also fewer cheap flights available to AlicanteElche Airport, which takes into account the folding of Monarch which carried 20 per cent of the UK market.

However, British tourists still make up close to 50 per cent of the number of people staying in Benidorm.

Training for drug test police THROUGHOUT this week, Local Police have been taking part in a training course to enable them to detect drivers that are under the influence of drugs.

Campello Town Council, in collaboration with the Professional Union of Local Police (SPPLB), hosted the course for 25 police officers from different municipalities.

Mayor of Campello, Benjami Soler, said “Local Police officers of our municipality need to have this training to enable them to carry out these tests when necessary, to ensure the safety of all our citizens.”

The aim of the course was to increase the number of Local Police authorised to carry out the tests and recognise symptoms of a driver under the influence.

British fraudster pair tracked Credit: HM Revenue and Customs

FRAUDSTERS: Father and son returned to Britain to serve their sentences.

by John Smith FATHER and son tax fugitives Brian Colwell, 76 and Jamie Colwell, 51 were arrested at a property in Benidorm and returned to the UK to serve prison sentences after defrauding £1 million (€1.13 million).

They had been sentenced in their absence having left England earlier this year, one by light aircraft to France and the other by ferry before both

heading for a secret hideaway in Spain.

The Colwells were tracked down by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators and their overseas partners to a villa near Benidorm, where they were arrested by Guardia Civil officers in early May. The pair of property developers together with Jamie’s former partner Briony James, 45, had claimed to have spent £14 million (€16 million) building

new houses, to fraudulently claim VAT repayments totalling £965,897 (€1.1 million), but a HMRC investigation revealed not a single brick had been laid.

Both were returned to Bournemouth on Wednesday afternoon and appeared in court yesterday (Thursday) when it was confirmed that the father would start his two year and eight month jail term, whilst his son will serve five years and three months

Annual Masonic Ladies Night L O C A L F R E E M A S ON ’S LODGE, Arenal Deportiva, recently held their annual

Ladies Night at the Salones El Canor in Teulada.

This was a very successful

affair with over 80 Masons and guests attending. The idea of the Masonic Ladies Night is to thank the wives and partners for their help, support and understanding over the past year.

The current Worshipful Master of the Lodge is the President of the meeting and his Lady is the hostess.

This year the President was WM Ian Brown ably assisted by his lovely L ady wife Eileen. The evening started with a cava reception followed by a formal dinner.

The MC for the evening was WBro Michael Banks who did a sterling job.

FUNDS: There is never enough to go around but every little helps.

THE charity Giving4Giving just keeps on helping and their latest donation of €1,000 takes their total to a magnificent €99,000 to local Costa Blanca charities.

Elaine Horton and Bob Welham each expressed their delight at receiving the award.

Elaine, President of JVH said that she was indeed privileged to receive the award which was on behalf of all the hardworking volunteers, who, working together, have shown that they really can make a difference.

Last year JVH committed over €100,000 to helping those in need.

1st - 7th June

It’s Summer Fete time again THE Calpe branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has announced that they will be holding their annual Summer Fete next Saturday June 9.

It’s the 12th time the event is being staged by the RBL and this year it’s at the Hotel Gran Sol in Calpe starting at 2pm.

Featuring a wide variety of stalls with some quality goods on sale, there will also be a grand raffle with some spectacular prizes to be won that have been donated by local businesses. Entrance to the Summer Fete is free, and all the money raised on the day will go to the 2018 RBL Poppy Appeal.

Starting them off early SCHOOLS in Calpe are taking part today (Friday) in their own Mini School Olympics.

In an initiative promoted by the Department for Sport, around 170 children from different schools across the municipality aged five will be taking part.

With a goal of getting children into sport

at an early age and promoting physical activity, the event is being held on the municipal football field.

The children will be competing in long jump, high jump, hurdles, relays, sprinting and culminate with a marathon... but not believed to be over 26 miles on this occasion!

Summer beach coverage announced COUNCILLOR Jan Van Parijs has announced that as the main summer season gets underway, Calpe’s beaches will be adopting a new protocol to monitor and control the presence of jellyfish; something that has become a headache for many municipalities with beaches in recent weeks.

Calpe closed their beaches on May 23 after the dangerous

Portuguese Man-O-War jellyfish was discovered in the area.

The councillor also said the other two major problems on Calpe’s beaches - those of street selling and illegal massages - will also be taken seriously, and will look to involve everyone who works on the sand. This will include the lifeguards, first aid service, Local Police and those renting

out sun loungers and beach umbrellas.

Van Parijs also said that the summer lifeguard ser vice would begin today (Friday) and until June 14 (and again from September 16 to 30) will see 21 rescuers on duty at 14 different locations.

During the main season June 15 to September 15 there will be an increase to 35

lifeguards and other health and safety personnel in attendance.

The hours of cover will be from 11am to 7pm, and from 10.30am to 8pm between the main three months. The principal ambulance station is in CantalRoig, a central point located between the two largest of Calpe’s beaches.

Spain to get extra EU funding

THE ongoing political crises that are hitting both Spain and Italy are causing fluctuations on the money markets and increasing the cost of borrowing.

As an example, the IBEX 35 - the index of Spanish bluechip companies - fell almost 2 . 5 p e r c e n t o n Tu e s d a y morning.

T h e s i t u at i o n i n S p a i n i s not being helped with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy facing a vote of no confidence today (Friday) in parliament, which comes as his gover nment continues to deal with the issues in Cataluña.

When Spain was going through its toughest period

during the economic crisis, the risk premium was considered the test of an economy’s health and a measure of inv e s t o r c o n f i d e n c e . S p a i n ’s risk premium, back in 2012 for example, was in excess of 500 basis points, triggering fears of a bailout.

On the stock exchange, in Tu e s d a y m o r n i n g t r a d i n g , losses in the banking sector dragged the index down: Santander (down 5.8 per cent), Sabadell (down 7 per cent), Bankia (down 5.1 per cent); BBVA and CaixaBank (down nearly 4 per cent). All listed shares in the IBEX 35 were in the red, and 16 out of the 34 companies included in the prestigious list lost more than 2 per cent.

ACCORDING to a report in Spanish media, Brussels is looking to impose a 5 per cent increase in funding given to Spain.

This has been due to a new method of calculation established to allocate funds that have previously been detrimental to the Eastern European countries and biased toward the southern ones.

Assuming the plans of the European Commission come to fruition, Spain will benefit from €34 billion of funding between 2021 and 2027 at 2018 prices.

Even though Spain is one of the southern countries, they score very poorly in areas such as education and youth unemployment and makes it a candidate to get an increase in cash.

The EU’s cohesion policy has always been one of the pillars of the European budget. It seeks to reduce economic and social disparities among countries and regions through cohesion funds, rural development aid and the European Social Fund. However, along with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), these funds are dwindling. Under the long-term 2021-2027 budget proposal, the Juncker Commission, named after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, is suggesting cuts of around 6 per cent to the common agricultural policy and cohesion policy programmes in order to meet the new European priorities.

Everything stated is true and the donkeys are tied by very short ropes to metal poles for hours unable to move and very distressed. Some are definitely in a lot of pain with spinal damage.

However no one ever mentions the horses who are treated just as bad and suffer unnecessarily.

They have to pull carriages with sometimes six people in. They are forced to fast trot through the village foaming from the mouth.

They often slip and sometimes fall on the slippery cobbles on the slope leading from Plaza Consitution whilst pulling a heavy carriage full of people.

They work all day from early morning till last thing at night and I have heard are not given water to drink. People have seen then being punched and kicked.

I think the donkeys and horses should be taken to rest during the hours of 1pm and 3pm as it is too hot for them to work at this time. Many tourists are unhappy to see these animals treated so badly, it certainly is n’t a good advert for the village.

I understand Angel Nozal from the PP party has been trying to make conditions better for these sad animals.

There were 53 Romanovs l i v i n g i n R u s s i a w h e n Ts a r Nicholas II abdicated on March 15, 1917. Eighteen were slaughtered in the most heartwrenching circumstances; 35 made their way to safety. Imperial Russia’s gold reserves weighed 1,311 tonnes, which is $ 6 0 b i l l i o n a t t o d a y ’s v a l u e .

STAND-UP COMEDY, ridiculous royal revenge and exploding whoopee cushions are all part of Poor Yorick, this year ’s summer show from Javea Players.

It will be directed by the play’s author, Phil Mansell who has been a member of Javea Players for over a year.

The play was a winning entry in a competition run as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project and was performed to great acclaim at two theatres in Wales.

“I was really pleased that my play was chosen for this prestigious event,” said Phil. “The aim of the competition, which had entries from as far away as America, was to give a modern take on Shakespeare and create something that today’s audiences will enjoy and find totally accessible.

“With this in mind, I wrote a humorous version of Hamlet - the version of

events the Bard would have written if he’d been in a more upbeat mood.”

In Shakespeare’s play, Yorick the court jester is dead. But here, he’s out on the road - dying a death - as he pioneers a new kind of comedy called stand-up.

He’s fed up of the old knockabout routines and

wants to do observational comedy in which he tackles subjects like the Black Death, dung heaps and leeches.

Sadly, the medieval peasants aren’t ready for this kind of humour and a dejected Yorick is persuaded by his girlfriend, Bess, to return to the king’s castle at Elsinore and get his old job back (it’s either that or she goes back to her job at the brothel.)

It will be performed from July 2 to 7 at the Casa de Cultura in Javea, following a tapas supper at the Bar Imperial.

Hearing aids and background noise NEW users have to get used to their new aids.

The number one thing they love about their new aids is that they don’t have to strain to hear any more. But the number one thing they can’t get used to is the background noise.

Despite the complex microchip and tremendous advances in hearing aid technology, background noise can still be a problem.

After probably many years of not hearing much background noise the sudden ability to hear everyday noises like rustling paper and plates clashing together can take time to get used to. It can be very challenging.

But with time these noises do get better. And remember even when you had normal hearing background noise was a problem. Wearing your aids will not eliminate this entirely.

Background noise can affect you in two ways. Firstly, it can make it nearly impossible to understand what someone is saying because of the noise and

secondly the noise may distract you from what the person is saying to you.

Although there is no cure for these problems, users can explore options of lessening the problems with background noise.

Ways in which you can lessen the impact of background noise.

Think about the last time you went to a restaurant and found yourself bombarded by noise: other people’s conversation, music in the background, clanging dishes and cutlery, noise from the kitchen, etc.

Now think about the ways you

could minimise the difficulties you have the next time you dine out. You may find these suggestions helpful: 1. Make reservations in advance. Then you can specify your table requirements. Pick a table in the least noisy part of the restaurant (eg away from the kitchen, bar, etc) in a well-lit area and sit with your back to the window, so the light is on your companion’s face and not in your eyes.

2. Plan ahead by picking a quieter restaurant. Try to find carpeted restaurants that have chairs with rollers on the legs

(thus preventing an annoying scraping sound when they are moved).

3. Pick the best day and time (not Friday nights!) to dine out.

4. Look on the restaurant’s website to preview the menu.

And ask the waiter/waitress for a printed specials menu.

5. Request that staff turn down background music (you are probably not the only patron bothered by the volume of the music).

6. Tell the host and waiter, as well as your dining companions, that you have a hearing

loss and that it will help you if they slow down a bit, speak a little bit louder, and face you directly.

WHEN you meet a person, the first thing you see are the eyes, and in many ways the eyes are what is representing you.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

I THINK I left my poor readers in suspense last week, which means you are all now dying to know what happens to the verb OÍR in the present tense. Worse still, some of you might have gone to look it up and been frightened into thinking it is, horror of horrors an ‘irregular verb,’ which in fact is not the case, although it is a little odd. Oír is one of our standard -ir verbs. It has its own ideas about what to do in the first person singular, as is the case with a number of other standard verbs we have already looked at. It also suffers from some adjustments to its spelling, in common with a few other similar verbs.

Here is the conjugation in full: Oigo Oímos Oyes Oís Oye Oyen As you will see the letter y comes into play in three of the forms for no apparent reason, but in fact the reasons are good sound linguistic ones linked to ease of pronunciation.

To put it simply, ‘oyes’ is a great deal easier to get one’s mouth round than ‘oes.’ Just to digress for a moment, there is a close relationship between the letters ‘i’ and ‘y’ in Spanish and sometimes there is a substitution of one letter for another in various word changes.

Verb oír and standard verb sentences The name of the ‘y’ is ‘igriega’, ‘the Greek i’ (at least it was, they have now changed the name of it but that’s another story) and sometimes the ‘i’ is referred to as the ‘ilatina,’ the Latin i.

Going back to the verb ‘oír’ you will notice that in the first and second persons plural, there is an accent placed on the í vowel to distinguish it as a separate beat from the ‘o.’

Somehow I’m not sure I’ve convinced you with any of that explanation, so if that’s the case then I recommend you try out this one which works wonders for some people but not for others, ‘that’s just how it is!’

Obviously, and as ever, there is more to say about standard verbs, but I think the time

is approaching when we need to move forward to look at our second category of verb which is the ‘root-changing’ one. Before we do though, it is a while since you have had any homework, and also I think it would be a good idea to see some of these verbs in action in sentences. So, here are some disconnected phrases for you to translate whilst you admire their verbs at the same time.

1. Mi marido lee el periódico todos los días.

2. Mi hijo sale los sábados por la noche.

3. ¿A qué hora coméis normalmente?

4. Los chicos cocinan cuando están en el campo.

5. No oigo mi móvil.

6. ¿Escribes en español y en inglés?

pets The rats are sniffing out bombs and TB RATS get bad press. Ever since the Black Death they’ve been on virtually everyone’s bad list. That’s now being overturned thanks to the sense of smell of the African giant-pouched rat. Their sense of smell is so acute they’re being trained by Belgian charity APOPO to work in two very different worlds, those of TB and mine clearance.

From the age of four weeks they’re socialised to get used to people and trained to respond to a special click sound they associate with a food reward. After this they search for the target scent, either a TB infected tissue or the smell associated with explosives.

Amazingly mine detection rats can sniff out and search a 200 sqm area in 20 minutes. This would take humans about 25 hours. When it comes to TB, a rat can screen 100 samples in 20 minutes. The same would take a lab technician four days to complete.

The ability of the rats to sniff out explosives is badly needed. With mines generally activated by anything over 5kg, the rats have the big advantage in weighing only 1.5kg.

So far none have been killed or injured.

SMART RATS: Can sniff out TB and explosives.

The debate on mogs or dogs WHETHER dogs or cats are smarter has been a common debate among animal lovers for years, and looks set to remain so for many years to come.

Although scientists are making many new discoveries regarding animals and their behaviour and they are one step closer to answering the question every day, there is still no definite result to the debate.

If we go by size, dogs are clearly in the lead as their brains make up 1.2 per cent of their total body weight, compared to 0.9 per cent for cats.

Ye t s c i e n t i s t s c l a i m that size doesn’t matter and what counts is the number of brain cells. In this case, cats are well in the lead with around 300 million compared to

dogs’ 160 million.

Investigations carried out at the Cancog Technologies Institute in Toronto, Canada, led to the conclusion that dogs are more eager and able to learn and understand tasks and orders and obtain better results than cats in memory tests.

Other studies have proved that dogs are able to classify objects in different categories.

While both animals are able to solve simple puzzles to obtain food, when things get more complicated dogs are more likely to look to humans for help while cats will keep trying to solve them themselves.

Many scientists, though, have said that felines are more difficult to work with than canines, meaning results of the many studies carried out so far can never be completely trustworthy.

Until they find a way to obtain 100 per cent fool-proof results to comparative tests, the debate will continue and dog and cat lovers will remain on opposite sides of the fence.

ONE of my favourite TV programmes, that’s to say one that is less awful than most of the others, is Grand Designs hosted by designer and writer, Kevin McCloud.

It’s never an easy road that the subjects of each programme apparently travel, because without fail, they seem to underestimate the costs of their project and end up having to borrow more money.

Who in their right minds would undertake a major refurbishment or new build, often with projected costs running into many hundreds of thousands of pounds, without having their estimates checked and rechecked by qualified people?

And if they have indeed been checked then perhaps those professionals should look for work in a less demanding environment.

Only inmates of certain institutions would put themselves in situations like

this, but as sure as eggs are eggs, they almost always find themselves having to find an extra hundred grand or two, because either materials have mysteriously escalated in price, or surprise, surprise, they find themselves in the middle of winter and work has come to a standstill.

But fair do’s the British weather is

something that very few of us have had experience with. It could happen to anybody.

Here’s a suggestion though: start in the early spring and give yourself more time.

The other side of the coin is that even with expert advice, some of these char-

acters decide that they know better and plough on regardless, often project managing (whatever that means) their own build. And guess what, they almost always fall flat on their faces.

Repeatedly one of the biggest holdups seems to be the manufacture and installation of windows, because they are never your ordinary run of the mill windows, but tinted quadruple glazed; bullet proof; one way; mirrored jobbies.

Having waited months for these beauties to arrive, they then often find they won’t fit. Oh darn. Let’s knock a bit of brickwork out.

On top of all this chaos and financial uncertainty, many of the couples concerned decide to have another baby.

A total of 43,000 car owners voted for 13 victors for the different categories including Best Family Car and Best Green Car. “For the second year running, we wanted to use our New Car Awards to

A BRIT who won €17.6 million on the UK’s National Lottery has showcased his line-up of flash motors to the media.

Tom Naylor, 62, worked as a lorry driver and owned a Ford Granada before winning the fortune with his wife in 2001. He dreamed of one day owning a supercar. Now he has six, not to overlook a top-of-the-range 4x4 he calls his ‘shopping trolley.’

“The first car was a Jaguar XJR which I bought 17 years ago when

I first won the lottery. Over the years I have bought more and more cars. Now I have one for every day of the week,” he told media.

The €1.13 million collection includes a Mustang V8, Jaguar XJR, Jaguar XJ220, Jaguar F-Type convertible, two Aston Martin DB9s including a standard and Bond edition and a Land Rover Discovery.

Naylor stores the cars in six garages at his south Staffordshire residence.

And he employs a dedicated car cleaner to keep them shining.

“If I was doing it myself I would be spending all day washing them,” Naylor said.

The Jaguar XJR is Tom’s wife’s favourite car. But Rita cannot drive so husband Tom ‘chauffeurs’ her around in it.

His best-loved vehicle is the Jaguar XJ220. “One day I will own one of those,” he told Rita after spotting it once when out driving his lorry.

“As you can see with Tom winning the Lotto, it is life changing,” a National Lottery spokesman said.

Ladies reign supreme LAST Friday, 27 intrepid Montgo explorers journeyed south to battle it out on the fairways of Font Del Llop golf course for the numerous prizes supplied by their sponsors, Stella and Simon Fox. Despite the grim clouds hugging the mountains they enjoyed a fine, if rather windy day at this undulating course.

The tricky greens provided some interesting putts, being rather more three dimensional than those at Oliva Nova.

This week the girls reigned supreme taking five of the six prizes on offer. Proving that practice can sometimes make perfect, Susie Snelling scored a magnificent net 40 following a week long golf fest due

Pairs fishing for a change THE Carp-R-Us club took a break from the Summer Series to make the long trip to Beniarres for the Pairs Cup match.

Twelve anglers took part and the winning pair, with a total of 17.72kg were Steve Collins and Sue Boorman with Steve taking the individual hours with 13.56kg.

Second were Tom Marshall and Jackie Breslin with 14.40kg and third were Dave Sutton and Peter Boorman with 12.38kg.

Weights are still not quite as good at this venue as they were a couple of years ago, but it’s good to know that all the anglers caught.

It is worth mentioning that the remaining gents failed to get higher on the scoreboard than 10th

place. So well done to all of the ladies.

Fox also took home NTP prizes. So the Fox household was also a happy one. There were no two’s recorded this week.

Following previous mention of maintaining dignity on exiting bunkers, this week the club must remind players that the rule is equally true of watery hazards.

Rumour has it a certain Mr Cuming almost required a change of clothing after his assault of a small pond and four limbed scramble out of danger. Suffice to say no bones were broken and his attire remained intact.

Plaza Golf Society IN the second game of the TPGS season the society played at their favourite course, Villamartin.

It was a great turnout with 44 playing and two reserves.

The greens where slow having just been hollow tined. As usual they had a two’s pot which was shared by new Capitano Dickie Allen and Graham Clarke.

The nearest the pins was sponsored by The Ale House and the winners were, Richard Kent, Bob Price, Graham Clarke and Dodgy Declan Crowley x two all receiving a €10 voucher.

Best guest was Gary Harper with 35 points, hacker of the day with 14 points was Robert Kemp. In the Silver division Alan Carter came third with Bo Lejdstromberger second, both scoring 32 points with firm favourite Liz Sully winning with a whopping 35 points (she was also the best lady on the day).

In the Gold division Kevin O’Bird came third with 35 points, Graham Clarke came second with 36 off his 5 handicap, but the leader on the day was captain little Dickie Allen with an amazing 44 points (incredibly the day before on the same course he scored 18 points). Next outing is at Alenda next Friday June 8 (there are only a couple of spaces left so get your name down quick!
