What a mess says Calpe Council CALPE Council is asking the General Directorate of Ports for information on the status of the tender dossier for the construction and operation of the Puerto Blanco marina.

In February 2016 it was decided to close in the marina for security reasons given the dilapidated state of the port, especially the breakwater and this coincided with the expiration of the management contract of the company looking after the facility.

PUERTO BLANCO MARINA: Disused and abandoned.

The closure of this port affects the supply of moorings to the area and a reduction in sporting options, but the place is also an eyesore which affects local residents and the good standing of the town.

FOLLOWING the excitement of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the eyes of the world were focussed on Manchester and the first anniversary of the bombing.

Thousands of young people and parents had turned up at the Manchester Arena on May 22, 2017 to enjoy the music of Ariana Grande but their joy turned to horror as one man, Salman Ramadan Abedi blew himself up, taking 22 people with him, wounding 139 and leaving hundreds more with psychological damage.

Various political leaders as well as Prince William arrived in the city to attend a Remembrance Service in a packed Cathedral alongside many of those who had survived and relations of those who had been killed.

In a show of solidarity, leaders from all of the major religions banded together to show their abhorrence for the ruthless

massacre and there was a general feeling of pride in the resilience of the people of Manchester tinged with sadness for those who were so brutally robbed of their lives.

Ariana Grande who has clearly been affected by the events of the previous year and had bravely staged a charity concert in the city just a few weeks later tweeted ‘thinking of you all today and every day I love you with all of me and am sending

you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day.’ Many added their own personal messages to a ‘tree of hope’.

There was a one-minute silence which was observed by many across the UK and there was a festival of music which included an appearance by the Manchester Survivors Choir made up of children and their parents who had been present at the bombing.

It is quite amazing how people can suffer the greatest of indignities when they are totally innocent, yet manage to bounce back and carry on with their lives to the best of their abilities.

The loss of 22 innocent lives (plus the bomber) is a tragedy and quite rightly makes headline news but this is just a drop in the ocean when one considers the daily loss of life in wars and insurrections around the world.

Syria and Yemen are still the

current hottest spots as different world powers become involved in fighting proxy wars and as is so often the case, thousands of people are sacrificed in order to advance the ideological wishes of a few leaders.

Going back to the First World War, the generals sat back whilst the ‘proles’ died in their hundreds of thousands to win a small stretch of mud in Belgium or France (and this is not to take away from the magnificent men who fought the war).

Unfortunately, whilst in the west, war is no longer so common (but let’s not forget Bosnia), everyone is now a potential target but life goes on.

Here in Spain whilst we may get irritated by bureaucracy and a different pace of life, at least we can be happy that generally we are not on the ‘front line’ and the only real skirmishes are when the occasional visitor has too much to drink.

Synthetic drug barons arrested in raids

RAID: Guardia Civil uncover large scale operation.

THE Guardia Civil has dismantled the largest laboratory producing synthetic drugs ever found in Spain in Marina Alta.

Five raids led to the arrest of six people four of whom are Spanish and the other two Belgian.

The investigation, began last year, of a criminal organisation based in the Levante area, dedicated to the distribution of large quantities of narcotic substances, mainly heroin.

During the investigation it was found that one of the members of the group had made contact with a new collaborator who would be re-

Although the two groups didn’t end up in a partnership, officers took the opportunity to follow this new line of investigation and discovered a number of outlets for the drugs in Lliber, Teulada and Benissa.

They discovered that most of the drugs were produced in what has been described as a garage bunker, disguised as a store for farm implements on the property of one of the gang in an isolated area so that no-one would be disturbed by noise or the smell.

It also transpired that the

gang had obtained two kilos of amphetamine (speed) from a source in Benidorm which they intended to adulterate and then sell on.

As the chemicals being used were potentially dangerous and inflammable, the Guardia Civil obtained advice from Europol on how to how to deal with it safely once they decided to undertake their raids.

After arresting those involved and removing the material, officers estimated that the thousands of kilos of material would be sufficient to produced five kilos of crystal meth a day with an annual production value of â‚Ź100 million.

RTN joins Royal Wedding celebrations

by John Smith THE British Embassy in Spain joined in the celebration of the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle by hosting a party in the residence of the British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley.

The EWN Media Group owners Michel and Steven Euesden had been invited but decided that it would be more appropriate for them to host a party for expatriate residents of the Costa del Sol, so long-serving staff writer John Smith who was also on the guest list and has recently become more involved with RTN newspaper travelled to Madrid to attend the British Embassy Royal Wedding party on the Group’s behalf.

Accompanied by his wife Ophelia who is Gibraltarian and spent more than 30 years working in British media as well as being a former presenter on Gibraltar TV, they were delighted to be part of this patriotic gathering of British residents in Spain.

Through the award of a diploma, the Ambassador acknowledged the

invaluable work of community organisations throughout Spain who do so much for Britain and picked out for recognition were established news outlets such as the EWN Media Group (parent of RTN), Costa Blanca News, and SUR in English and this newspaper wishes to add its congratulations to these worthy peers.

The Ambassador Simon Manley was ever present making sure that he chatted with all of his guests and John was able to spend some time talking to him about the video recording sent to British communities around Spain which had been inspired by the EWN Media Group wedding party.

His daughter bravely sang the opening chorus of God Save the Queen to much applause and the Ambassador said “This wonderful event today illustrates the enormous breadth and depth of the contributions made by British people working with our local partners in almost every corner of Spain.

“For example, we have commu-

nity groups that work with the elderly and the unwell, the Royal British Legion, church groups, community groups, British schools representing the 55,000 children who study in British schools across Spain, and of course, our local partners, from town halls and our Honorary Consuls.

“It has been an honour to meet such a huge range of inspirational people today, and celebrate this Royal Wedding together.”

All who left the event to travel back to their homes across Spain were clearly proud to be British on that special day.

Every company needs a Nicki Burgess IN every successful business, there is an unsung hero without whom, things would run less smoothly.

In the case of the EWN Media Group, publishers of six Euro Weekly News titles, three RTN newspaper titles and Sol Times, that person is General Manager Nicki Burgess.

She has become a well-respected figure around the regions that the newspapers cover and goes out of her way to make friends with clients wherever she goes.

Although a super sales person, as General Manager, Nicki is literally here, there and everywhere, ensuring that the day to day life of the business proceeds as smoothly as possible.

She is involved in recruitment, accounts, sales, day to day management and is the first person that proprietors Michel and Steven Euesden turn to when there is a problem.

A bit like a swan, she is calm on the exterior whilst paddling furiously to ensure that everything for the company goes according to plan and when it was decided at relatively short notice to hold the Royal Wedding party - featured in this week’s newspaper - Nicki visited various local charities in order to invite guests to attend.

But that wasn’t all, she was the glue that held

the entire operation together organising support from local businesses, finding the food, drink and even the bunting and being last out and first in every day in the build up to the event.

Nicki even managed to explain to a Spanish cake maker how to create the Union Flag decoration on the special cake.

All at the EWN Media Group take this opportunity to join in with the publishers in their thanks to this long serving and exceptionally efficient member of the family.

WASHED ASHORE: Portuguese Man of War.

Man of War alerts still in place SIGHT INGS of strings of Por tuguese Man of War along the Costa Blanca coastline have led to various closures and then reopening of different beaches.

Earlier this week , Benidorm banned bathing from three beaches, Levante,

Poniente and Mal Pas but then as these dangerous pseudo jellyfish drifted on, visitors to the beaches were allowed to re-enter the water.

In the meantime, however, reports have come in from as far away as Mallorca that the

siphonophores (a description of a creature that is made up of a number of different organisms) have been seen and bathers across the Mediterranean coast are warned to keep a very close eye out for these creatures which can give a very nasty sting.

British crooks to be returned to the UK TWO British fugitives from the UK have been arrested in Altea by the Guardia Civil on an extradition warrant.

The father and son, aged 76 and 51 had been convicted in the UK of having swindled £1 million when posing as real estate developers and sentenced to 32 months and five years, to be served concurrently for their crimes.

It was known that the two men had

fled from the UK last January and it was believed that they had settled in the Alicante town of Altea so British authorities asked the Guardia Civil to see if they could be found.

The father and son were discovered living in the area of Altea Hills and were spotted driving a luxury British registered vehicle, so were arrested and handed over to the courts for extradition.

Stuck to the pavement R E SIDEN T S of cer tain par ts of Javea are up in arms about the problems they are encountering with f lowers and resin from trees.

According to a number of people complaining, the council is doing n o t h i n g t o c l e a n u p t h e a re a a ro u n d the Car retera del P la and young children are finding it difficult to walk safely as their shoes keep sticking to the pavement.

C a r s a r e b e i n g ‘c a m o u f l a g e d ’ b y a combination of resin and f lowers and

it is difficult to see out of or clean windscreens, making travel in the area potentially dangerous.

Local shopkeepers have joined in the complaints saying that the mess presents a bad ima ge of the area and although many clean the mess with bleach on a d aily basis , the y have received numerous complaints from customers.

All of those affected expect the c o u n c i l to t a k e a c t i o n to re s o l v e t h e situation.

ILLEGAL DRUGS: Another huge haul seized.

Expected to go up in smoke A COMBINED operation resulted in the seizure of a fishing boat containing up to 15 tons of hashish.

Working together, officers of the Guardia Civil, the National Police and the Tax A genc y, intercepted a boat which was sailing without an identifying f lag and was challenged by the c u s to m s s u r ve i l l a n ce p at ro l b o at , Arao some 110 miles off Cabo de Palos.

Thanks to advice received from the

Dutch, Por tug uese and I tali an authorities it was discovered that the suspect vessel left the port of Stellendam (Holland) early in May heading through the Straits of Gibraltar towards an area of the Mediterranean where drug loads are often unloaded.

Although the vessel was supposedly registered in Malta, this was denied by the Maltese authorities and as the b o a t s a i l e d t h ro u g h t h e M e d i t e r ranean, the customs vessel set off

from the port of Alicante to intercept it.

When officers boarded the ship, they discovered a crew of three Dutch nationals as well as a Bulgarian and a ver y large number of wrapped bales which they believed contained hashish.

Having arrested the men and taken possession of the fishing boat, it was escorted back to Alicante where the bales were unloaded and found to contain hashish and weight 15 tons.

Celebrating the town of Ifach IN 2016, the medieval gothic capital of Ifach was uncovered in the Calpe area and exhibits discovered there will now be on display at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante for the next several months.

The exhibition titled The Pillars of the Kingdom was formally opened by the President of the Diputacion de Alicante and the mayor of Calpe, Cesar Sanchez, who said that “we have the obligation to take care of the heritage that our ancestors have left us and to turn it into an opportunity for our people.”

He added that the council is going to “reconvert the tourist office so that besides the tourism of the sun and beach, it will appeal to cultural tourism displaying the value of our cultural and historical heritage.”

Bitter ex bins dog A DENIA man throwing away household rubbish opened the communal container to find a whimpering poodle inside.

He recognised the dog as a neighbour’s pet named Jenny and after taking it home with him, he called the National Police.

Seeing that the frightened dog was in a bad condition and dirty, the police called APAD, the animal protection association who identified the dog’s registered owner through its microchip.

The owner, a woman of 50, was detained, not only on animal cruelty charges, but also in connection with a court order for her arrest issued by a Denia judge and linked to ill-treatment accusations from her former partner.

Although the poodle’s microchip named the woman as its registered owner, the dog belonged to her ex and the police believe that she could have put it in the container as an act of revenge.

Meanwhile, the dog is currently in the care of her rescuer.

Mythical story is still relevant today MORE than 1,000 children were invited to attend two sessions organised by the Obra Social la Caixa in Calpe.

The purpose of the shows was to bring the world of music closer to youngsters in the expectation that they would enjoy the special production which combined music, magic and fun.

This is part of a wider educational project running across the whole of Spain and on this occasion, working with the Calpe Council, the organisation arranged to present a special show based on the Trojan war.

The mythology of the past is considered to be very suitable for this type of educational event as it is exciting yet, despite being set in mythical times, is very relevant to today and the topics of heroes and betrayal, love and war represent the basic human traits that we see around the world now.

affair that had retained much from its glory days, and I was amazed to see faces in it that I’d ever only seen on the big screen - Kenneth William, Alec Guinness and Denholm Elliot, to name but a few, I was even more delighted to learn that the bar had gained worldwide fame when it was featured in the 1961 British suspense film Victim, starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. It was the first English language film to use the word ‘homosexual’ - and it played a significant role in the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. It was in the Salisbury in 1975 that I met the first great love of my life, an ex-army signalman called Brian Parry. We instantly bonded, and remained happily together for 21 years. Cancer took him in 1996.

He was just 47.

With decades of gay history stretching back to Oscar Wilde’s time, one would have thought that The Salisbury would remain a haven for gay clientele forever, but in the mid-1980s a decision was made to turn it straight. In a move that left regulars hurt and bewildered, staff turned really nasty to-

ON the very first day I arrived in London from Johannesburg in South Africa back in 1973, I stood rattling the door of a bar called The Salisbury in St Martins Lane, wondering why, at 4pm, it was shut.

Just then a handsome young copper came ambling up, and said “you must be a tourist, or else you would know that bars don’t open until 5.30.”

Then he added with a sneer: “You shouldn’t go into that place unless you’re a bleedin’ poofter.”

I replied that, although I wasn’t actually in search of a gay bar, it was good to know that I’d inadvertently found one. “So, thanks for your help, officer, and if you care to join me here later I’ll gladly buy you a drink.”

He blushed all the way up to his helmet (pardon the expression) and hissed “I can have you for propositioning me, sunshine, but I’ll let you off with a warning this time.”

And off he strode in a huff.

When the bar eventually opened I immediately vowed to adopt it as my local. Built around 1899, it was a sumptuously-appointed Victorian

This move left The Salisbury completely depleted of customers.

The proprietors discovered the hard way that, while you can easily

rid a bar of unwanted clients, it’s a damn side harder to kill its reputation. Heterosexuals, believing it was still a gay bar, gave it a wide berth and, for about two years, it remained virtually empty.

I was reminded of The Salisbury by an article that appeared recently in RTN which suggested that Benidorm’s Old Town, a long-time Mecca for LGBT tourists, was in danger of losing its gay identity as a result of an influx of straight stag and hen parties.

A guy who read the piece said he thought that local gay bar owners should actively discourage such groups. “Gay bars should be for gay people only,” he grumped.

“Nope,” I replied. “All my life I’ve campaigned for equality, and that extends way beyond LGBT issues.” I then pointed out that some of the best nights I’ve had in the Old Town have been in the company of men and women of all ages gay and straight - who have come to spend their money in establishments that fly the rainbow flag precisely because they enjoy the campness, camaraderie and the sheer gaiety that many other bars and clubs lack.

Wherever inclusivity trumps suspicion, hatred and fear the result is bound to be gatherings of people who no longer feel the need to cocoon themselves among their own kind.

The days when there was a real need for exclusively gay venues like The Salisbury have long passed and I, for one, am glad that they have been replaced by a new order that allows people to be themselves in whatever bar or club they choose to patronise.

A SAN VICENTE woman denounced a taxi driver who wanted her guide dog to travel in the boot of his cab.

Concepcion, who is 69 years old and lost her sight seven years ago, explained that she lives in an outlying urbanisation and after visiting the t o w n r e c e n t l y, s h e r a n g for a taxi to return home.

When the taxi driver arrived, he told Concepcion that her guide dog, Wuira had to go in the boot.

“The law says that guide dogs may travel beside their owner on all public transpor t” the woman told him, but the adamant cabbie refused to allow Wuira to sit in the back with her.

By then passers-by were stopping to see what was happening, which made the driver even surlier.

THE average hotel occupancy in Alicante for the month of April was a whopping 80 per cent, and was the largest recorded total since 2005.

Family saved from eviction by Local Police THANKS to an apparent error in an eviction order, officers from the Alicante Local Police refused to allow the eviction of a couple with three children from a property in the Virgen del Remedio neighbourhood.

According to the sharp eyed officers, the eviction order did not mention the three children and they did not believe that it was right to allow them to be thrown out onto the street and therefore made the decision to allow the family to stay.

The family has lived in the same property for the last four years and admitted that they had entered what was an empty apartment, just one of many owned by a bank.

Members of the stop evictions group had been trying to negotiate a stay of execution with representatives of the bank but to no avail and praised the thoughtful officers for their prompt and humane action.

TUNA: A 250 kilo bluefin caught in the Mediterranean.

Getting ready for the tuna season ALICANTE PORT has been particularly busy as fishing boats from all over Spain and part of France have been sailing in to get ready for the start of the bluefin tuna season.

Having been fishing en route, the vessels unloaded several hundred kilos of anchovy and sardine for sale in the old Alicante fish market which has seen a rebir th since 2017 and now trades in some high valued fish including swordfish and tuna.

It has been reported by the Port of Alicante that in the first quar ter of this year more than 325 tons of fresh fish have been unloaded which is three times more than the same period last year.

The bluefin tuna has been considered a delicacy since early times and can weigh up to 400 kilos when mature but strict fishing limits have to be imposed to ensure the viability of the species with even game fishing restricted.

The Royal family is special all over the world and Meghan has her prince now.

WITH Brexit in chaos, and nobody agreeing on anything, Russia becoming very scary and President Trumps’ visit to the UK looming, you would think the British had more to worry about than politically correct fairy stories.

Cinderella was a poor, overworked woman and therefore not to be celebrated in any way, even though the ball and the wonderful carriage kept me and others enthralled as children, for a long time and still does. Do you realise that Sleeping Beauty was not asked permission for the prince to kiss her!

How could this happen, because he kissed her back to life, much to the joy of the seven dwarfs and countless children?

And how about this one, all new mothers should ask permission to change their baby’s nappy. How is this possible? Get a life and smile.

Underage migrants THE number of people aged under 18 arriving in the Valencia region almost tripled last year compared to four years ago, according to data from an NGO. Almost 300 unaccompanied migrant children arrived in the area in 2017, up from 108 in 2014. An estimated four out of every 100 migrants have since been placed in foster care, according to Save the Children.

The charity claimed failures in the reception system, as well as protection and integration methods were failing children arriving alone in the region and across Spain.

Rodrigo Hernandez, director of the NGO in Valencia, said: “We are not able to offer them the best conditions of life, the present and the future, which they have a right to.�

Spain’s Interior Ministry said on its website that it is committed to the full integration of people and to respecting the human rights of migrants.

Crescendo International Choir

By Nancy Klein THE Crescendo International Choir, made up of women and men from a variety of European communities, recently performed two concerts in the Costa Blanca area to benefit the wider community.

On Friday May 11 they performed a variety of songs for the seventh international choral festival in L’Alfas del Pi. The theme of this charityfundraising festival was music performed in films.

The town of L’Alfas del Pi is famous for hosting film festivals and it will be celebrating its 30th anniversary of hosting such events this July. So these concerts were envisioned to pay homage to the music that can be found in films.

Many of the songs were arranged for the choir by Spanish Crescendo International Choir Director, Irene Oliva Andres. The choir was accompa-

nied by pianist and fellow Spanish composer, Antonio Guillen Posteguillo.

Money raised by these concerts is going to Social Volunteer Association, L’Alfas, which is responsible for managing its community food bank. Both concerts were held at the Frax Foundation of Albir for the first time.

On Sunday May 13 the choir performed at Parroquia San Jaime Apostol in Guardamar.

For this concert, a wide variety of music was performed, also as a charity benefit and the €234 raised at the Guardamar concert will be donated to the town’s charity.

These funds will be used to help people who cannot afford to pay all their living expenses, such as their electric or water bills or even their rent.

Thank You Happy to be part of the local community AS crowds gathered on the streets of Windsor last Saturday so a band of British expatriates met up to celebrate in the Costa del Sol. The British Embassy was holding a par ty in Madrid, and amongst those who had been invited were Michel and Steven Euesden, proprietors of EWN Media Group and publishers of Euro Weekly News, RTN and Sol Times who thought that it would be more appropriate to spend the money involved in travelling to Madrid on members of the local community.

As the Group was to be represented by a senior staff member in Madrid, those who remained on the Costa del Sol put their not inconsiderable skills to organising an event for local, mainly elderly residents, to enjoy the Royal Wedding in company with a drink and a bite to eat.

First they had to find a suitable location at short notice and Bob and Linda Hackshaw, owners of the Vil-

lalinda restaurant on the Mijas road, volunteered their delightful property with extensive terraces.

The event was sponsored by Currencies Direct in conjunction with media partner Spectrum FM and other local companies including Iceland, Calvin’s Hairdresser, Bunches Florist, Bing Asian, Don Alfonso Restaurant, La Parra Gold and Cardland.

Two great entertainers, Antony Wolfson and One Wish Steve volunteered their services and the EWN staff rallied round helping to lay out the tables and chair, hang out the bunting and balloons, preparing sandwiches and drinks and then clearing up afterwards.

Some 150 people arrived to share the excitement generated by the wedding, having first being greeted with a glass of Pimms (which flowed freely throughout the day) and to chat with friends old and new.

REPRESENTATIVES of SIPOL, the Union of Local Police of the Valencian community visited Calpe to honour officers of the Local Police force who had acted with distinction, over and above the norm.

Tw o o f f i c e r s b a s e d i n C a l p e , J e s s i c a Muñoz and Miguel Vizcaino, were praised during the ceremony for their involvement last summer in assisting the delivery of a child by a woman who was confined at home.

The event was attended by the deputy of the government of Alicante, Jose Miguel Saval, and the head of human resources in Calpe, Ana Perles.

THE 10th annual FiraCalp, the fair of gastronomy and commerce in Peñon, opened for business yesterday (Thursday) in the Plaza Mayor.

There will be a greater number of exhibitors and tapas on offer thanks to the participation of the fishermen’s association and the festival commission 2018.

It is expected that 17 restaurants, cafeterias and bars will take stands at the fair and there will also be 11 businesses who will exhibit their products.

Each stand will offer four or five different tapas (more than the three offered at previous events) at pr ices ranging from €1 to €4 and the fishermen’s guild will offer, in addition to the traditional Peix de Calp, a new product made with different ingredients from the sea.

Alongside the food, there will be a selection of beer, soft drinks, water and wine with each stand offering wine from a different vineyard.

THE Alicante Port authorities were able to create 700 direct and indirect jobs and an economic benefit of more than €300,000 because of two major cruise ship arrivals.

Three cruise ships were in p o r t fo r t h e d ay a n d m o re than 6,000 passengers and crew, thanks to a series of adv a n c e p l a n n i n g , w e re w e l comed in the city itself and transported around a number of the sur rounding municipalities.

T h e p ro g ra m m e w a s a n nounced by Councillor Mari Carmen de España who said that ‘ we ’re ready to receive such a high number of tourists in one day.’

The three ships sailing into p o r t w e re t h e Je w e l o f t h e Seas, Navigator of the Seas, and the Seven Seas Explorer, and the city council was determined to make the visit a s u c c e s s a n d e n c o u ra g e t h e tourists to come back again on a future cruise.

EU directive on insurance information FROM now on, customers taking out insurance policies will be given more information about costs, cover and the risks involved.

This is all part of a Spanish government initiative to ensure that people know exactly what they’re buying.

Sales people and anyone else connected with selling any kind of insurance policy will be given greater training in their product that will concentrate on many of what are perceived to be important parts of the ‘small print.’

Taking a full interest in the subject of insurance cover isn’t at the forefront of many people in Spain, with many not even having contents cover in their home policies. Indeed, some who live in flats only possess basic buildings cover.

The Spanish government’s new decree - currently at the drafting stage - is in response to a directive from the European Union (EU) which attempts to ensure that customers are totally au fait with what cover is offered. It also seeks to propose higher penalties for brokers who fail to give full details of the policy, especially if it’s discovered they don’t fully understand it themselves.

U3A Marina Baixa Garden Party G4G: Gary handed over the donation to Hazel.

Helping those in dire need

GARDEN PARTY: All those present had an enjoyable time.

SOME 83 members attended the garden party at the ‘U3A ARMS’, which was held in the lovely garden of secretary, Joan Flint and her ‘better half’ Bill.

A lot of hard work went into the event, much of it behind the scenes before the day. Joan works tirelessly to make these events a success and is backed up with a hard working committee and their spouses too. There was also lots of help from non-

committee members.

This year they had nibbles, followed by a ploughman’s pub lunch.

A raffle was held, as is customary, with everyone getting a free ticket, plus the option to buy more and the members did not disappoint, with €115 being raised for charity.

Several pub games were then played, including darts, dominoes and aunt Sally.

U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month in the auditorium at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. LAST week the Giving4Giving (G4G) charity made a donation of €1,000 to the Franciscan men ’s sh el t er i n G an d i a t o h el p b u y cleaning products and household goods.

There are over 60 men at the shelter suffering from mental health and medical problems, some of which will be terminal and the home relies on donations to keep up the good work.

The home is run by a group of Franciscan brothers helped by volunteers, one of whom is Hazel Layt who accepted the donation from Gary representing G4G. Giving4giving in Costa Blanca has now donated €98,000 to local charities.

Why are you broke?

CAREFUL with your finances and pay your credit cards on time to avoid interest charges?

Don’t be too smug. Every time you purchase a train ticket; buy a pair of shoes or use public services roughly 40 per cent of the outlay will have gone to the banking industry’s vaults.

According to Ellen Brown, chairman of America’s Public Banking Institute, bank interest charges are regressive, which means the poor are milked to gratify the rich.

A public banking sector would discount up to 40 per cent off everything we buy or use. This is the reason why the private banking system can’t ultimately challenge nationalised banks like those of Russia, China and Iran. It explains America’s $21 trillion debt.

Farmers, manufacturers and transportation costs are dependent upon bank credit. Each in the supply chain must invest, use premises, engage labour, materials and transport, etc. This before

the end product is available. This credit is accumulative and variable.

German professor, Margrit Kennedy reveals that 35 to 40 per cent of everything we buy goes on bank interest. Each time local government and ordinary purchasers spend €100, 40 per cent is si-

phoned off by the banking conglomerate’s accumulative interest rates.

It’s about time THE Costa Blanca Astronomical Society is hosting a very interesting talk on Sunday June 3 starting at 6pm at the Senieta de Espai in Moraira.

The speaker is Profess o r, I a n M o r i s o n f r o m Manchester University in the UK. Ian has also held the Gresham chair in astronomy for four years and as well as being one of the founder members of the Macclesfield Astronomical Society, he was very involved in the Merlin radio astronomy project at Jodrell Bank.

He has written several books about astronomy as well as his most re-

cent on Astro photography and is a regular contributor to Astronomy magazines and the BBC Sky at Night programme.

His presentation, ‘It’s about time’ will examine how the passage of time has been measured over the centuries, sundials, water clocks, pendulum clocks and atomic clocks and how its precise measurement was important to navigation, the requirement and problems associated with synchronising time across countries and now across the world.

He will touch on how Einstein’s theories show

I HAVE never understood why I have this problem when it comes to eating or preparing tomatoes.

It’s as if they possess some weird alien intelligence whose mission it is to make me look bad in the eyes of the Princess.

A tomato is not even sure of its own identity. It is a fruit if you happen to be a botanist, but definitely veg if you are the chief cook of the household like me.

What I do know is that it’s a treacherous beast and it came as no surprise to learn that the tomato is a member of the deadly nightshade family. They seem to be waiting for me wherever I go and no matter what precautions I take, they ambush me when I am least expecting it, blitzing my clothes.

The problem is I love tomatoes;

whether they be part of a Greek salad, a bolognese sauce or simply on toast, but when my eagle-eyed lady gets a hint that I am about to indulge once more, I receive the dreaded Medusa look.

It has been known for me to be seated in a restaurant with a napkin tucked

into the top of my shirt; another wedged into my waistband and newspaper draped over both legs, before the Princess will allow me to take one bite of a tomato based dish. It’s embarrassing.

And pointless, because invariably I will find that once I have been un-

-IR verb endings in present simple so we can repeat it for all six changes.

WE are still working on our present simple tense of verbs and the changes that they make depending on which group they fall into.

To understand how the present simple tense works we have to divide verbs into three categories: 1. Standard verbs which follow simple regular patterns; 2. Root-changing verbs which also follow regular patterns; 3. Irregular verbs of which there are only four.

We are currently still in category 1, and we have looked at the changes made to -ar and -er ending verbs. So, in this article we shall look at standard -ir ending verbs, which will mean that one main category will have been dealt with.

Let’s take a common -ir verb: VIVIR which means ‘to live.’ Remember that the first thing we must always do is separate the ending -IR from the root VIV. This is a basic procedure that we need to get into the habit of doing whenever we are dealing with verbs.

You will notice that these are not dramatically different from the ‘-er’ verb endings. In fact there are only two forms (first and second persons plural) which vary. I like to think that -ir verbs have a slight identity problem. They are inclined to copy -er verbs at the drop of a hat.

Now let’s put our example verb together.

wrapped there are blobs of tomato on my shoes (white ones of course) or in my hair.

I thought I couldn’t go wrong by eating those little bite sized cherry jobs, but no, although I pop one in my mouth and seal my lips tight shut, as soon as I bite down the juice finds the smallest of gaps and spurts out under pressure down my shirt front.

My last encounter was with a chilli con carne at a local eatery where, because my dear lady was absent, disaster was inevitable.

Cutting into a chunky chip with the edge of my fork, one half of the potato leapt into the air, did a double back flip and taking a dollop of tomato rich sauce with it, hit me in the chest and dropped onto my lap.

I was pondering this yesterday as I absently pulled the aluminium ring on a tin of sardines. The lid came away like a coiled spring and showered my shirt with a deadly mixture of fish oil and the inevitable tomato sauce.

That stain will never shift, so I have quietly disposed of the garment in the bin and hope that my beloved will not notice its passing. when there’s more that one ‘you’), viven (they live - or more rarely the more formal - you, when there’s more than one you to be formal to). If you remember we saw in the last article that occasionally the first person singular (I) form ‘does its own thing.’ This also happens with some standard ‘-ir’ verbs, for example salir (to go out). The first person ‘I go out’ is salgo, but the rest of the verb is completely regular. Likewise conducir (to drive) conduzco (I drive), oir (to hear) oigo (I hear). Oir makes some other minor spelling adjustments although it remains a standard verb. However, I see I’ve got rather carried away today so you’ll be sad to know we haven’t got time to discuss oir any further. ¡Hasta la semana que viene!

IN Spain it is estimated that between 130,000-160,000 people are living with HIV, with around 20 per cent undiagnosed. Of new cases diagnosed, eight out of 10 of them are men, aged between 29-45 years of age.

These are the findings of a report on HIV and AIDS in the country made available to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.

Up to June 30 this year, there has been a total of 3,428 new diagnoses of the virus within the Autonomous Communities, Cuenta and Melilla.

This rate is similar to those of other European countries.

The most common mode of transmission of HIV is through sexual relations.

Transmission from drug injecting continues to decline and stood at 2.8 per cent.

The report also shows a fall in the cases of the disease being detected among immigrants.

Hair loss Could PRP even be used to help prevent hair loss? Some dermatologists believe so as a study found that PRP injections into the scalp appeared to slow the hair loss process. However, it is thought to work better the earlier it is used in the hair loss process.

How does PRP work?

Blood is taken from the patient with the platelets separated from the other blood cells before going through a centrifugation process to increase the platelet concentrations. It’s all about the eyes

WHEN you meet a person, the first thing you see are the eyes, and in many ways the eyes are what is representing you.

Because the skin under and around your eyes is very thin, signs of fine lines, and wrinkles are especially common. This can make you look and feel older than you really are. How do you start and finish your day?

IT’S really up to us to decide whether we have a good, bad or indifferent day. How is that you may ask? It’s quite simple. You see it’s not when we wake up, it’s how we wake up. It’s not when we go to sleep, it’s how we go to sleep.

Whether we realise it or not, most of us are attached to negativity and drama, whether it’s watching television or reading a book etc. Unless it is empowering, then it doesn’t serve us well. When we go to bed at night, the last thing we do, read or watch will be the last thing we remember before falling asleep. Anything that doesn’t give us peace and calmness before we fall asleep leaves a marinating effect on us for the time we are asleep.

We then wake up and the first thing we generally reach for is our phone to check messages, news etc. This really isn’t the best way to start our day as we simply trigger our minds prematurely to naturally start stressing, worrying and planning the day ahead, literally minutes after opening our eyes, leaving us no time to be grateful for the many good things we all have.

Our thoughts control our feelings and our feelings determine our emotions, this impacts on our mood for the day, which in

turn affects ourselves and people around us, which will determine our results for the day.

I invite you to try this exercise for a month to see what results you get. Before you go to bed, read something that serves you, such as a book on personal growth or an uplifting book that makes you feel happy. Do not read or watch negative news or

violence on television before bed, instead, watch something light-hearted or something that makes you laugh, although, not at the expense of others.

Buy an alarm clock, and leave your mobile phone in another room. When you open your eyes in the morning, you won’t be tempted to reach for your phone, so spend that time thinking of

something you are grateful for. Being grateful alleviates worry, fear and even anger as they are opposing emotions and cannot be expressed at the same time.

You are the best qualified person on the planet at being you, so it’s up to you to work on yourself and create an amazing life which you deserve. So let’s start with making each day better and build up from there.

Remember, there is no road to happiness, happiness is the road and we are already on it.

The best way to predict your future is to create it.

Aircrew Association celebrates its 30th anniversary THE Aircrew Association Costa Blanca (ACACB) celebrated its 30th anniversary last week with a Red Sea rig lunch held at La Cumbre Restaurant, Benitachell.

Association members and their guests were joined by local representatives of the Royal Air Forces Association, including their chairman, Wing Commander Bob Hunt MBE, the US Navy League including their president, Judith Lewis and the president of MABS, Jacqui Phillips MBE and her husband, Bernard.

pets SHOULD you ask your cat to live with a dog?

If you have cats that are not used to dogs, you should think carefully before doing this. If you must, then make sure it is a puppy as young as possible.

NEVER ever expect cats to live with a dog that hates cats or, worse still, has been trained to chase cats. In this case, either cat or dog must be rehomed.

How to make the introduction. First start with the cat, and only when the cat is established in the family, add the dog.

Both should be young: under six months for cats and under one year in dogs. They need to learn e a c h o t h e r ’s b o d y l a n guage.

The cat must be able to go towards and retreat from the dog without being chased or needing to run. Borrow a dog crate, where you can put the puppy, his bedding and bowls. When he comes out for walks, make sure

This can take several days.

The aim is for the dogs to get used to it. They should settle down and not harass it. The aim is NEVER to let a chase occur. Use a Feliway Diffuser in the room.

Once they are absolutely used to it, keep the dog on a lead and let the cat out of the crate in the same room. Make sure they are completely under control at all times.

Take it incredibly slowl y. I f y o u g o t o o f a s t i t may not work.

Are you dirty?

Madrid in its campaign for a clean city has launched a roadside machine that instantly gauges the amount and type of smoke emitting from your exhaust and register the toxins. As you pass the monitor will light up with either a smiling green face which means you are clean or a red sad face that says you are dirty.

At the moment this is to advise drivers of the condition of their vehicle but it is expected that when the trial is over then it will be used to monitor vehicles and fine or ban vehicles.

This is like a sledge hammer to crack a nut because like all cities that are built in a valley with a river the natural weather pattern will cause a cloud of fog in the winter. In the 40’s and 50’s London suffered from smog a thick yellow acid killer fog that was so dense that when my wife’s suitcase burst open when getting off a bus at Crystal Palace she could not see what came out and had to feel to find them.

The solution was very simple because the smoke from house fires mixed with the fog produced the killer mixture. When coal fires were stopped the smog disappeared. The problem today is they dispel particles that sit about 30 feet above city streets with tall buildings and contain all toxins that build up.

This has been known for decades and the answer would be to phase out diesel powered vehicles plus making the regular ITV test monitored and greater testing. But that is too simple.

The Euro solution is to have electric vehicles. The problem is countries can hardly manage to meet electric demands now. Spain tries to meet extra demand by sun, wind and water while France is using nuclear power and the UK is still trying to find an answer.

But they did not last even though they were reliable because they did not use instant fuel. In the Euro’s enthusiasm for electric vehicle they do not have any commercially produced

The combustible engine is like the wheel, though people try really hard, nothing has replaced its versatility, off-road ability and can fill up in seconds as well as being able to carry additional supplies.

Today Repsol has released an initiative with offering €400 of Auto gas GLP fuel if you convert your engine to take the GLP. The fuel meets the Euro minimum emissions as well as being cheaper and now Repsol are stocking it in most of their stations. This means that most of the vehicles on the road can be saved from what could be a massive problem for the future.

Bond beauty under the hammer AN Aston Martin used in the 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye could sell for between €1.37 and €1.83 million when auctioned in July.

The Aston Martin DB5 will be sold by Bonhams, one of the world’s oldest auction houses founded in 1793.

Pierce Brosnan raced the 1965 vehicle in one of the most famous Bond car chases.

The drive-off sees the MI6 agent evade a Ferrari F355 driven by sexy assailant Xenia Onatopp along curvy Monaco mountain roads.

Benitachell Bowls Club Win Premier 20 Knockout BENITACHELL BOWLS CLUB have just won the coveted Premier Twenty knockout competition, beating San Luis of Torrevieja in the final.

This was a series of tough matches in which a team of 20 players, 10 players compete at home whilst 10 play away.

2017 - 2018 also saw a fantastic success for the Benitachell Lions team, who after a long season have just won the Northern League Championship for an amazing ninth year in succession.
