HIGH PATROL: A drone’s eye view of Benidorm.

By Darren Parmenter LOCAL POLICE in Benidorm will shortly get more help thanks to a new drone that will operate in - or rather above - the municipality. The law that currently controls the use of air space will need to be enhanced to permit their use, and they will be used in surveillance during the busy tourist season and at major events, such as the Low Festival and the Benidorm Half Marathon. Benidorm was the first area in Spain to use such technology when it was trialled back in 2016 with

great success when monitoring the beaches. It also enabled the Local Police to discover a number of migrants as they attempted to land back in August of last year. What makes the latest addition to the drone fleet special - this time at a cost of €40,000 compared to the €7,000 of the original piece of technology is that it will be able to operate at night. This will increase the ability of the authorities to better coordinate the work of the emergency services not only in day-to-day policing but in dealing with any incident and

providing instant information of any unfolding scene. There has been no formal start date announced for the new drone to come into operation but it’s hoped to up and running before the new summer season.

Her name is Lola... she is a life saver LOLA, the pet German shepherd dog, is the toast of one family in Javea after her prompt actions saved their lives. The story was recounted in the Spanish media by Lola’s grateful owner Tania, aged 22, who was in her house with a 27year-old friend at the time a fire broke out in the property. “Lola’s scratching at my bedroom door woke me up and when I went to open it, I saw that the room outside was full of black smoke,” said a relieved Tania. She has no doubt that her faithful friend saved them. “Without Lola’s alarm, the fire would’ve spread further and caused untold harm to us.” Reports suggest that the fire broke out in the living room due to a fault with the television. This caused significant amounts of black, toxic smoke to generate and initially disturbed the hero dog that sleeps in the same room. When she woke up, she realised that her owners were in danger and began to scratch the door. “It’s not uncommon for Lola to scratch at the door. Like most dogs, they love to be with their owners. Thankfully, she did it this morning and we’re so grateful that she did,” concluded Tania. Local Police and the fire brigade were alerted and the flames were quickly extinguished, leaving blackened walls as the main consequence.
