Rochdale seeks Costa twinning.

ROCHDALE in the UK is currently seeking to be twinned with Alicante. Councillor Fernando Marcos has recently received a delegation of officials from the Greater Manchester area town after they made a request to have closer links with the Costa Blanca city.

Rochdale’s Deputy Mayor, Mohammed Zaman – who made the formal twinning request – was accompanied by Councillors Shakil Ahmed and Khalid Chaudhry on his visit to the town hall.

Mohammed Zaman has lived in Rochdale since 1975 where he started his first paid job as a labourer in Arrow Mill in Castleton. He has been a member of the Labour Party since 1984 and since retirement from a career in

textiles and teaching, he became councillor for Milkstone and Deeplish ward in 2011 and again in 2015. The population of the town of Rochdale is around 107,000 and is somewhat smaller than its hoped-for twin, but Councillor Fernando Marcos said that he would be committed to studying the formal application for twin status.

Councillor confirms ‘gay friendly’ commitment

TORREVIEJA Councillor Fanny Serrano announced at the recent FITUR tourism event in Madrid that the lakes and Natural Park in Torrevieja La Mata are very much open for business. “Every day, more people – especially foreigners – are experiencing these facilities that show the environmental heritage of Torrevieja,” she said. Serrano also demonstrated the commitment that the municipality has as a ‘gay-friendly’ destination and confirmed that Friday February 2, 2018 will see Torrevieja staging the 10th holding of the National Drag Queen Competition.

Coast hosts one of Europe’s largest caravan sites

by Lynn Whittaker ONE of the biggest campsites in Europe has opened its doors...and it’s in the Murcia region.

Caravans and motorhomes alike trundled into their new base along the coast in Santiago de la Ribera which is composed of 29,000m2 and next to the San Blas pine forest. The site is also attractive as it’s a mere two kilometres from the Mar Menor.

At full capacity, there are 210 plots that come complete with lighting, elec-

tric connection, drainage and waste access and a bright and modern room for general ablutions. There is also a separate area for visitors and ‘residents’ to do their laundry, using the installed washing machines.

The owner of the camper park, Antonio Fructuoso, is offering a competitive opening charge from €7 per day, all inclusive.

“If the number of users allows us to do so, we will maintain these prices at a flat rate throughout the year, there will be no summer and winter prices,” he said. “The strong season for the Eu-

ropean caravan user is from September to May as they seek an area with a climate like that of the Mar Menor. Many of them take up residence in the area, while the bulk of the national and local travellers will use the site in the summer,” said Fructuoso.

Mar Menor’s Director General, Antonio Luengo, said: “This type of infrastructure helps towards the year-round consistency of the local tourist season. Until now, there was nothing like this in San Javier for the tourists who drive a great distance to enjoy our climate and environment.”

British residents show life-saving generosity

by Lynn Whittaker A PILAR DE LA HORADADA British resident has become the toast of the local community after a generous gesture that will help save the lives of others.

Jimmy McGill, along with his wife Clare, has raised €6,500 to purchase three defibrillators for the municipality with the aim of a further six more planned for the future.

Their initiative has its roots in the bar that they run in Pinar de Campoverde. One of their regular customers was suddenly taken ill on the premises and an ambulance was called. Unfortunately, when the paramedics arrived at the scene there was nothing that could be done. The man had died from a heart attack.

“As well as being totally shocked by what happened, I just felt helpless,” said Jim. “The doctor later told me that time is important when it comes to this type of heart attack. I spoke to my daughter – a nurse in England – and she told me about the increased use of defibrillators in public places that prevent many deaths.” Jim liked the idea and was then surprised when he asked his local municipality where they had theirs installed.

There weren’t any... and that there was no money available to buy them. This spurred Jim on to his fund raising plans.

Spurred on by the memory of his late customer, he organised a number of events in his bar to raise enough money to buy one defibrillator for Pinar de Campoverde. The generosity eventually raised the funds to buy three machines that have already been installed in the area.

They are in the municipal swimming pool, the centre of Avenida del Pino and at the entrance to the commercial shopping area.

One of them is, in fact, close to Jim’s own bar although he hopes he never has to use it.

CULTIVATION: More than 1,000 marihuana plants found in Altea and 70 in Alicante

Anti-drug raids result in 11 arrests

by Mark Rogers IN recent days, officers of the National Police have carried out three anti-drug operations in both Alicante and Altea. Eleven people have been arrested, and in one of the raids a crop of almost 1,000 marihuana plants was found.

The large crop was discovered in a villa in the exclusive Altea Hills area of the Marina Baixa.

In the first of the operations, officers detained two Russian citizens – aged 36 and 42 - and dismantled the enormous cultivation of marihuana. In addition, they found all the necessary lighting and ventilation equipment needed to aid the growth of the plants, as well as night-vision binoculars, radio equipment and other tools which has led the authorities

to believe that other criminal activities, as well as drug trafficking, might be taking place on the premises.

The property had previously been investigated by police back in 2016 for similar reasons, but the plants were removed by the previous tenants.

The other two operations were carried out in Alicante where the remaining nine people were arrested for distributing cocaine, crystal meth, ecstasy, opium, poppers and magic mushrooms.

Searches were made in six homes and a number of clubs where more than 100 grams of cocaine were found among quantities of other types of drugs. They also found €8,400 in cash hidden away and a small indoor crop of 70 marihuana plants.

Let there be LED light AN IMPORTANT energy saving initiative has been announced by Alicante City Council that is aimed to reduce light pollution and improve road safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

One of the plans is to replace more than 2,400 lights in different areas throughout the city with LED technology which includes a spectacular display on the facade of the town hall.

They will be investing €1.8million in the tender process that ends in the middle of February. Once awarded, the deadline for finishing the project is four months.

No takers for building contract

NO COMPANY wants the gig. That is the situation in Calle Saltire in Callosa de Segura where nobody has tendered for the contract of works to carry out a number of repairs. The road has been closed for more than two years when it began to sink due to water leaks from underground pipes.

Four houses needed to be evacuated to the subsequent structural damage. The tender for the works has been set at €335,000 but the five businesses that have expressed initial interest didn’t pursue the idea saying the budget needs to be increased by a further 45 per cent to make it viable.

A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR based at a school in Elche has been fined €1,000 and had six points taken from his driving license after testing positive for cocaine.

The instructor was holding a lesson with a pupil in his car when it was stopped during a routine police check at the road side.

The officers were suspicious that the driver was under the influence of some kind of narcotic substance and tested him accordingly. His positive test result will be passed to a laboratory for further analysis. In addition, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) will decide on his future as a driving instructor.

FIGHT: Players and families join in mass on-field brawl

by Ray Chadwick FOOTBALL has shown its ugly side once again after a fight broke out on the field of play in a fixture between junior teams from CF Torrevieja and CF Lacross Babel from Alicante.

Officers from the Guardia Civil and the local police were called to the Esteban Rosada Stadium in Torrevieja to break up the brawl that eventually involved more than 40 people.

With 88 minutes gone in the Group Four Regional Preferente fixture for 16 to 18-year-olds, things turned a little nasty after the hosts had just equalised to leave the score at 2-2.

According to the referee’s match report, the incident was set off by a young CF Torrevieja player who has since been sanctioned by the club. He was sat on the bench when he decided to let out a string of verbal abuse to a Babel player who he’d accused of hitting one of his Torrevieja team mates in the incident that resulted in the equalising penalty.

The verbal attacks then led to the physical confrontation as the Torrevieja player ran on to the field to punch the visiting player. This resulted in a bruise on his left cheek and a bloody nose, and was the signal for the free-for-all to begin.

Members from both teams – in-

cluding those on the benches – piled in and were joined by a number of fans made up mainly of players’ families. The football match that had now taken second place to the fight was abandoned by the referee who also took the sensible decision to seek the safety of his dressing room until extra help arrived.

Four Guardia Civil cars arrived at the ground with back-up from local officers where they managed to restore some order. Nobody involved in the brawl required hospital treatment and noone was arrested, although the officers are aware of who the perpetrators are should matters be taken further.

Double death in three vehicle collision TWO PEOPLE were killed and eight people injured following a major traffic accident in Torre Pacheco.

The collision between two vehicles happened at 7.45am on Sunday morning on the RM-313 close to the exit of the F-29 that links Pacheco with Dolores de Pacheco.

After receiving initial treatment and being stabilised at the scene, those injured were taken to the Accident & Emergency Department of the University Hospital Los Arcos del Mar Menor.

The alarm was raised after the collision between a van and a car, and it’s also understood that a third car was involved without any reported injuries to its occupants.

The two dead people are believed to have been travelling in the same vehicle.

Future is still bright for orange driver...

A MAN driving a truck laden with oranges was trapped inside his cab after an accident on the AP-7 motorway in Pilar de la Horadada.

The alarm was raised by other drivers passing the scene shortly after the incident after they’d noticed the lorry overturned by the hard shoulder. According to reports, no other vehicles or people were involved and it appears the driver lost control of his vehicle. An ambulance was mobilised and transferred the driver to the Torrevieja Hospital with a few minor injuries.

Police lead the way for sick baby LOCAL POLICE in Elche were involved in an emergency operation to help a fourmonth-old baby who had suffered from an epileptic fit.

According to reports, the baby was known to suffer from the condition but this particular attack couldn’t be stopped even though her parents had administered her prescribed medication.

As the parents drove their daughter to the hospital, the local police led the way in their patrol car and cleared traffic en route to enable a safer and quicker journey to the accident and emergency department.

Medical staff were able to stabilise the girl soon after her arrival.

Evacuation averted by quick fire response A MAJOR fire that broke out close to the A7 motorway in Albatera on Sunday lunchtime has caused more than 3,000 square metres of damage to an area of palm trees and thickets. The blaze broke out close to the roundabout that al-

lows access to the A7, and the quick response and action of the fire fighters prevented it spreading further. Plans to initially evacuate a number of houses close by were reversed as a result; there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

Regional flu death total rises

by Glenn Scott EVEN as the number of cases of flu began to stabilise in the Murcia region, three more people have died from the virus during one week.

The latest deaths take the number to 15 across the region to date and have been suffered by those seen as being in high-risk groups.

Over the course of two weeks, the total number of people affected by the flu epidemic in the Murcia region that is cutting across the country has reached 11,848. However, with overall incidents of flu reducing by around 1,000 in a week the official state of the epidemic has been reduced from ‘very high’ to ‘high’.

Since the official beginning of the flu season – October 2, 2017 – the number of cases have reached 24,491 which greatly exceeds the overall 2016 / 17 figure of 15,680 in the six months to March.

EPIDEMIC: Seasonal flu numbers already exceed last year’s total has taken on more than 300 reinforcements to deal with the extra demand caused by the flu epidemic. They are made up of nurses, nursing assistants and doctors and have enabled an extra 164 beds to be made available in the region’s hospitals.

AFTER being reported missing, an elderly Spanish resident of Torrevieja has been found safe and well. This included the man’s photograph being circulated on social media. During the same afternoon, the man was reported as being discovered and in good health although it’s not known where he spent the missing day.

New laundry contract made public

CENTRAL Government has authorised a contract for more than €2million for laundry services for the Mar Menor Health authority. It also includes the provision of hospital gowns for patients and staff uniforms

and will last for a period of four years. The exact total is €2,739,764 and will cover hospitals and other health centres in the Mar Menor which are Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Torre Pacheco.

SPREADING: Rubbish bin fire also destroyed parked car

by Steve Collins SEVEN young locals from Callosa de Segura have been arrested by the Guardia Civil following an investigation into a series of arson attacks. The youngest is just 13-years-old.

Over the course of six weeks that began on Halloween night, October 31, the gang of youths set fire to a car, a house that had been abandoned and a total of 19 large rubbish containers. All but one of the teenagers arrested are known to the police authorities, with the 13-year-old being the only one without any previous convictions.

In what appeared to be an organised series of fires, the first incident took place on Halloween night when a number of rubbish containers and recycled paper bins across the municipality were set alight and on each

separate occasion the emergency services were called out to attend the scenes.

As well as the bins being affected, one of the fires spread to a parked car close by which was quickly destroyed.

A number of similar fires took place throughout November and into December with the last taking place on December 9.

The total damage caused has been estimated to be close to €20,000.

The Guardia Civil carried out a number of enquiries in the locality and those responsible were eventually identified and detained.

They are all Spanish, made up of five boys aged between 14 and 16 and a 16-year-old girl. The remaining gang member is aged 13.

As a result of the investigation, it was discovered that the teens carried out their crimes ‘just for a laugh’.

Bus wheel of fortune

DRIVERS and passengers had a lucky escape when a bus lost a wheel which then hit a passing car. The incident happened on the A-30 in Murcia close to exit 141 on the Madrid-bound lane just before 5.30pm and caused a number of tailbacks on the motorway. Reports say that no other vehicles were involved and no-one was injured.

OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have arrested and charged two women for a combination of threatening behaviour and blackmail. Over a period of time, they took more than €90,000 from a man who lives in San Miguel de Salinas.

The events that led to the arrests began in December 2016 when the man met a prostitute working as a club hostess in Torrevieja. Allegedly, he met her several times and paid for sex with the 32-year-old Romanian woman. Since that time, the man had been on the receiving end of a number of threats that the prostitute would tell the man’s wife if she didn’t pay her sums of money.

The man decided to pay her and it’s understood that during the time he gave the woman two cars as well as more than €90,000 in cash.

From the man’s point of view, he thought his ‘relationship’ with the prostitute was working well until she started demanding large amounts of money to keep quiet.

Her first request was for €40,000 and he agreed, paying here via a bank transfer to her own account. He assumed that would be the end of the matter.

However, she wanted a further payment of €25,000 although this amount

Again, the man hoped this would put an end to his plight...but no. She then asked for €25,000 in cash and also for two cars. Like the money, he never saw the cars again.

With the matter getting out of hand, the man finally went to the Guardia

Civil in San Miguel who started investigating in December 2017. They discovered that apart from the prostitute, a 36-year-old friend from Bosnia was also receiving the money.

Both have appeared in court and released awaiting trial having been charged with extortion and threatening behaviour.

Blackspot sees first accident of 2018

TWO people riding a motorbike were injured, one of them seriously, after they were involved in a crash with a van on one of Alicante’s blackspots. Both were taken to the Elche General Hospital. The accident happened on Sunday between Santa Pola and Elche on the dangerous CV-685 road.

Official figures show that during 2016, 20 accidents happened on the 12 kilometre stretch; this latest incident was the first recorded this year. The occupants of the van were unhurt and were, in fact, responsible for calling the 112 emergency number.

Local residents and visitors alike have been enjoying record January temperatures, and as they sat on the beaches and terraces basking in temperatures that reached 26.4ºC in Orihuela – the highest in the month for 45 years – they reflected that just a year ago on almost the same day it was snowing.

Other municipalities also hit levels that are expected in the late spring, with Dolores registering 26ºC, Guardamar 25.3ºC and Torrevieja 25ºC.

THE Plaza de Encarnación Puchol in La Mata was the venue for the annual food-fest on Sunday as the local residents and visitors from nearby towns celebrated the International Day of the Pig. Perfect weather greeted the estimated 3,000 people that turned up, and was held in the direct opposite of conditions that needed the previous two years’ events to be put back a week. This is the 18th time the event has taken place, and 400 kilos of pork was consumed accompanied by 125 loaves of bread and washed down with 100 litres of local wine and eight barrels of beer.

Polish motorcycle shippers caught NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested two men of Polish nationality at an address in La Zenia in connection with a series of motorbike thefts.

Not only were the vehicles stolen, but they were then dismantled and shipped back to Poland where they were re-assembled.

Police investigations began back in November last year but details of the case have only recently been made public by the authorities.

At that time, a man was arrested in the act of stealing a motorbike from a local lock-up after receiving a tip-off from a neighbour who witnessed what was taking place. A van that had been hired was also parked close by in readiness to store the stolen bikes.

According to reports, the thieves would gain access to a number of communal garages located on the Orihuela Costa and then break up any chains or locks on the bikes. They would then be taken up a ramp into the awaiting van.

After this visit, the delegation went on to officially inaugurate the Valencian Community stand at the exhibition.

Marathon runners’ surprise proposals

Medical Advice For a diet to be effective specialists recommend following these steps: • Choose a complete and varied diet that covers 100% of your nutritional requirements, and includes all basic food groups.

•Don’t be too strict and adapt the diet to your own tastes, to avoid giving it up.

•Maintain a steady weight loss; losing more than 1 kilo a week is counterproductive. The optimum weight loss is 500gr-700gr/week.

•Be realistic. Plan progressive changes to your diet and achievable objectives.

•Don’t skip any meals. Normally diets consist of 5 meals a day which must be carried out to maintain blood sugar levels and not be too hungry before the next meal.

•Respect everyone’s beliefs and cultures.

When to choose surgery When talking about a BMI (body mass index) of over 35, patients

should first follow a diet supervised by a specialised nutritionist.

Hi-tech heaven or hell?

Just by way of an exercise this week, I decided to conduct my own survey on the use of mobile phones in public places. It was all extremely scientific . . . I did a head count.

Without going into the actual figures, I worked out that over a one hour period, more than 30% of the people either passing through the small square where we were seated, along with fellow caffeine junkies at adjoining tables where we were enjoying our morning coffee, were using their mobile phones.

New lighthouse car park vandalised

ATTRACTION: Vandals attack lighthouse parking facilities

by Lynn Whittaker WITHIN weeks of opening, the new parking area for visitors to the Santa Pola lighthouse has suffered vandalism.

The car park was set up to allow the growing number of visitors to leave their cars without obstructing the access roads in the area that was previously the case.

A number of traffic signs were erected and areas cordoned off, but these signs have now been knocked down, defaced or removed altogether by the vandals. Also, a number of plants that were used to help with the reforestation of the area have also been pulled up and left on the ground.

Councillor Alejandro Escalada said that the council will be reinstating the signs that have been broken and replace those that have been stolen. Plants and shrubs also uprooted or removed will also be replaced.

Escalada also went on to say that these new facilities are for the benefit of all that visit one of Santa Pola’s most famous icons and should be respected by everyone, since the investment in the parking area was aimed at attracting more visitors that were previously put off from doing so.

The separate parking area has also enabled easier access to the lighthouse for the Guardia Civil or emergency vehicles which was previously blocked by the visitors’ cars.

Where to start? So much to say. Maybe just start by mentioning Brexit as it is so important to all our lives.

I am so concerned that when a report is produced by professionals, pointing out the downside, it seems to carry no importance with the press and no time taken for any discussions. There are always two sides to any negotiations and I don´t feel that the UK is facing up to the reality of trying to replace a structure that has been in place for over 40 years, and pretty successfully.

I understand that one of the most important issues is the customs and single market. Although this appears to be one of the UK’s demands, how can this be granted, as Norway, for a start, would be very hostile as they have to pay to be in this club and accept immigration. Then of course, there is Ireland, and indeed, Gibraltar, which has just been put on hold. We shall see, but I and many others are feeling very uncomfortable at what is happening and the time taken to not come to any conclusions.

As expats, we have no certainty of our position at the end of all this. I am very aware that a large number of expats, myself included, would like the option of remaining European, as I feel so distant from my country now, which is very sad.

It would appear, at long last, that the housing market seems to be recovering rather well and many people are still following their dream of living in Spain. I

First of all we shall go through your homework, which I trust you have all worked hard on. It was to create the past participles of a list of verbs. The verbs were all regular, which means that all that was required was to change the “– ar” ending to “-ado” and the “-er” and “-ir” endings to “-ido”. Here are the verbs with the answers: Trabajar – trabajado cocinar – cocinado bailar – bailado aprender – aprendido comer - comido firmar – firmado visitar – visitado tener – tenido comprar – comprado conducir – conducido ir – ido cambiar - cambiado The one that might have made you think twice was “ir – ido”, but as you can see it actually behaves itself as an ordinary regular verb, which makes a change.

As I said in the last article, the vast majority of verbs behave in this way, but there are a few that were different, or irregular which I listed for you.

The promise last lesson was to talk more about the words that translate as “have” or “has” in sentences like:

He hablado con mi vecino I have spoken to my neighbour Has escrito una carta You have written a letter Ha dormido bien He has slept well Firstly I want to remind you of a principle that we have to learn right at the beginning of our Spanish studies, and that is that you cannot translate words literally from one language to another. The reason I say this now is because a lot of people would automatically assume that “I have” should be translated as “tengo”, “you have” as “tienes” and so on. However, “tengo”, “tienes” and the other forms of the verb “tener” relate principally to ideas of possession. “Tengo una casa” (I have a house). There are other uses of “tener” such as “Tengo una idea” (I have an idea) or “He tenido un accidente” (I have had an accident) which do not strictly refer to “possession”, but have related meanings and require the use of “tener” as the main verb in the sentence.

However, when we say “I have spoken” we are not talking about possessing anything. We don’t own something called “spoken”! It is clear that the word “have” in English has an entirely different meaning in this context. In fact, rather than talking about possession or similar, it is being used specifically to create the time in which something happened.

If you think about the meaning of the two phrases: “I speak” and “I have spoken”, you should realize that the

only difference between them is to do with time – when the speaking was being done. Therefore, the word “have”, as well as expressing possession, is also a word that helps us to form a past tense of a verb. It is really quite reasonable to assume that when expressing this idea in Spanish a completely different word has to be used. To translate “have” in this meaning, we use parts of the verb “haber” as follows: “he” (I have), “has” (you have - familiar), “ha” (he or she has, you have - formal), “hemos” (we have), “habéis” (you have – plural), “han” (they have).

That is the basic explanation of how we translate “have” with past participles to form the tense of a verb. However, it might need a bit of time to digest, and there is plenty more to say, so we’ll take it slowly, step by step.

Ford’s 2018 Mondeo Ford’s new Mondeo is classed as a “Large Family Saloon” and competes against other marques such as the Volkswagen Passat and Volvo’s S60.
