by Mark Rogers THE rebuilding and reformations at Dénia train station have now finished.

A total of €2m has been spent on the project to remodel the station building, concourse and the platforms.

The final 400 metres of the track

has been walked by regional and local politicians - María José Salvador and Vicent Grimalt – to formally recognise the conclusion of the work, although it won’t be until well into 2019 that Line 9 running from Benidorm will be fully operational.

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) suspended the trains

between Calpe and Dénia back in July, 2016 and have since operated a bus service along that route.

In addition to the work undertaken in Dénia, the stations that serve Teulada, Gata, Alfaz del Pi and Benidorm have also been reformed, at a cost of €6.4m.

The new platforms have been

adapted to accommodate the new dual diesel-electric TRAM wagons which resulted in the jacaranda plants being removed and replaced with smaller trees. The station suffered from leaks in the roof which have now been repaired and waterproofed, and the facades have also benefitted from a thorough clean.

ADELTE ready to give assistance to increased numbers

ADELTE awarded airport assistance contract

by Glenn Scott SPAIN airport managers AENA has awarded a multi-million euro contract to provide support for passengers with reduced mobility.

Covering Alicante-Elche, Murcia-San Javier and Almeria airports, the contract for a period of four years has been given to ADELTE – a company specialising in airport boarding - and the agreement provides for a year-byyear extension by mutual consent up to a maximum of two further years. The contract is worth ₏29,152,000.

ADELTE have introduced a number of technical advances to aid the AENA airport passengers, and have recently digitalised the service with the aim of being able to react

quicker to the individual needs of those with mobility issues.

The awarding of the new contract followed guidelines requiring the highest quality of service to those in need, and taking it to the next level. This includes the kind of assistance offered to passengers with reduced mobility, response times, and training of the personnel on hand to treat them.

Alicante-Elche Airport attended 142,388 passengers needing assistance due to mobility issues in 2016, which was 14.3 per cent more than 2015. Figures, up to and including November 2017, show that 146,616 with special needs have already been attended to, and thus the final numbers when released will exceed the previous year.

REINFORCEMENTS: Benidorm will see more local police shortly

by Carol Palmer A TOTAL of 750 people have applied for the 20 vacancies in the Benidorm local police force.

The City Council received an avalanche of applications – 40 people for each available post - that are currently being processed with the aim of beginning a series of interviews and tests in February.

The successful candidates will go some way to reinforcing the shortage in the local police which has been acknowledged for some years and led to publicly announcing the vacancies back in August last year.

Despite the closing date for applications being October 30, 2017 the final list of candidates making it through to the final selection process is yet to be announced.

Councillor Jesus Carrobles, who is responsible for the Benidorm local police, said that the delay has been caused due to the “thorough review of all the candidates to ensure that they fit the requirements.”

Of the 20 jobs on offer, five will be covered by the 99 police that have applied from other municipalities and wish to transfer location, while the remaining 15 will come from the 651 applicants from civilians that are hoping to make the police their future career.

Health centre expansion to begin within two months NINE companies have expressed interest in the project to carry out the extension of the Sant Joan d'Alacant Health Centre. Once completed, the extra 800 square metres will double the size of the building that has been well used and very busy for a number of years.

The Ministry of Health has set aside an investment of €1.6 million and the victors in the tender process will be announced very soon and the work is due to start within the next two months and complete the construction by the beginning of 2019.

Passport area gets ready for Brexit changes

by Lynn Whittaker ALICANTE-ELCHE Airport is in the process of expanding their passport control area.

The works that began in October last year and are expected to be completed in June of this year is partly due to the UK leaving the European Union (EU) in March 2019 and new EU regulations calling for increased control and passenger safety.

With almost 6,000,000 passengers

using the airport from the UK every year, they will need to go through different a passport control than they currently do and so the facilities are being improved and increased to cope with the extra demand.

The total cost for the enhancements is €1,116,800 and will see an extension of 900 square metres made up of 694m2 for passport control and 206m2 for new toilets. During the second phase of the works – also hoped to be completed for the

summer – the number of passport checking booths, both manual and automatic, will be increased. That is expected to cost €900,000.

Currently, in addition to the 26 passport checking areas, there are six automatic machines that allow the identity of the passenger to be verified quicker. The new system also checks fingerprints and uses facial recognition technology. In theory, it should take just 20 seconds to enter the country...after queuing.

LOCAL Police in Benidorm have warned a number of bars after they held illegal parties over the Christmas period.

The cases have been sent to the relevant authorities in Valencia who will decide if fines – potentially up to €10,000 - will now be imposed on the establishments who were reportedly selling food and drink in the streets without having the necessary permissions.

One Benidorm pub and three other bars – that haven’t been named – have been reported for organising the public events in the streets on Christmas Eve during the early afternoon which contravenes the law.

City Council has been attempting for several years to control the increasingly widespread practice that encourages many thousands of people to attend street parties to celebrate Christmas Eve. In spite of an increase in the frequency of police inspections, they discovered a handful of places had indeed installed staging, loud speakers, and tents with tables and chairs all without authorisation. Police ordered the offending bars to remove everything from the streets and to hold their parties inside instead.

Police reports said three bars respected the requests but one ignored the instruction and they have been reported accordingly.

Trio arrested after brutal attack

Cyclist’s safety concerns on the N-332

THREE young men have been arrested for brutally beating up a man at a party in Gata.

The events that led up to the recent arrests took place on the night of November 7 last year during a local celebration in the municipality. The assaulted man was a member of the festival commission in Gata and suffered a broken arm, contusions to his back, head, ribs and jaw and was knocked unconscious.

RESURFACING work that has recently finished on the N-332 as it makes its way through the Marina Alta area has left many sections of the hard shoulder full of stones and gravel. This has made the navigation of these routes dangerous and almost impassable for cyclists, and this has put their safety in question as they’re forced to pedal outside of the white line. Reports suggest the area most affected is where the N-332 passes under the TRENET railway bridge at the Gata Gorge where the road is at its narrowest.

The three detained by the Guardia Civil are two Moroccan nationals and one Spaniard aged 17 and 18.

The victim was on the receiving end of a number of insults and threats from the trio for reasons unknown and they left the venue where a mobile disco was taking place. Later on in the evening, they tried to gain entry and were barred from doing so by the official who warned them that he was going to call the police.

This allegedly caused them to

verbally insult him even stronger than before which led to one of them punching him to the ground. At this point, the rest began kicking him everywhere on his body and led to him losing consciousness.

The subsequent investigation eventually led the Guardia Civil based in El Verger to identify the aggressors – all residents of Javea – and arrest them. They have appeared in court and released on provisional charges awaiting the next stage in the judicial process.

Show house office catches fire A FIRE broke out in a show house in an urbanisation in La Nucia.

Firefighters based in Benidorm were called to the blaze that is understood to have started in an abandoned office in an old pilot house in the three-storey building.

The urbanisation is unfinished and nobody is living in any of the completed properties, so no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

At first, the firefighters used thermal imaging equipment to ensure that there was nobody inside the building that was thick with smoke when they arrived. So far, the cause of the fire is unknown.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a 31-year-old man in El Campello for gender violence and drug cultivation.

The officers went to the property to follow up a report they had of a possible crime of domestic violence, and when they arrived at the scene they not only ended up arresting the man but found a stash of marihuana plants inside.

Officers were let in to the house

by the woman where they were met with a couple arguing and quarrelling that involved a number of insults aimed at the woman. She immediately filed a complaint against the man and he was arrested at once.

However, as soon as the Guardia Civil entered they almost immediately stumbled across a marihuana plantation found cordoned off by a plastic sheet in one of the rooms.

They discovered a total of 37 plants, a large supply of seeds, a number of

The man detained is a 31-year-old Frenchman who has already ap-

peared in court on the charges and has been released pending trial. A restraining order has also been filed against the victim to prevent him visiting his young baby.

Woman trapped in kitchen fire A 73-year-old woman has been rescued from a fire in her house on Calle Jaume in Altea.

The alarm was raised at 7.30pm by a neighbour who believed that someone was trapped in the house, and when firefighters arrived at the scene they had to break down the door to gain access to the kitchen. Inside, they found the lady who had already inhaled a large amount of smoke.

After treating the woman, paramedics accompanied her in the ambulance to the regional hospital.

Three cash machine victims in six hours

by Rob Murray A MAN has been arrested in Javea after robbing three women... with a toy gun.

The offences took place just before Christmas on the night of December 22 / 23 as the three victims were in the process of taking money from the same cash machine at different times.

The detained man – who has a criminal record and already been sent to prison – held up the women with a gun, but at time he victims wouldn’t have known it was a fake. His actions enabled her to get away with €220.

His first victim was a 51-year-old Swedish national who was in a bank office in Playa Arenal at 10.15pm. She was approached by the man wearing sunglasses and a scarf covering his face, and armed with a gun. He took

the €150 she’d just removed from the ATM. However, his demands didn’t stop there as he then instructed her to take more money from her account. At this point, she let out screams, push past the man and managed to flee the scene.

Two hours later, a 50-year-od British woman was his next victim. She lost €50. The third robbery took place at 4am when another British girl, aged 19, had her €20 taken.

All three victims reported the incidents to the Guardia Civil who began an investigation and after taking statements and looking at the bank’s CCTV footage, were able to identify him.

During a subsequent search of the man’s home, they found the clothes he wore in the three robberies that matched those seen on the CCTV.

Portuguese targeted by tourist hotspot TOURISM chiefs in Benidorm are attempting to double the city’s presence in Portugal with the aim of attracting more visitors from Spain’s neighbours. For the first time, the Benidorm tourist authorities have included two dates to attend the main fairs in Portugal and they’ve done so at the request of the hoteliers. The area is very confident that the launch of a direct flight between Alicante-Elche and Lisbon will attract more visitors prepared to boost the local economy and not just during the peak summer season.

Woman and her dog killed crossing the road

by Dave Bennett A WOMAN out walking her dog has been knocked down and killed in Javea.

According to reports in the Spanish press, the victim has been named as Elena, a 50-year-old Russian who lived in the municipality.

The accident happened when the woman was using the zebra crossing on the Avenida Juan Carlos I and was hit by a car going in the direction of Javea port.

The victim was dragged for around 50 metres by the car during which she suffered her fatal injuries, mainly to her head. Her pet dog was also killed instantly

in the collision.

Paramedics from the SAMU emergency services called to the scene tried to revive the woman without success and was eventually declared dead after just a few minutes.

It’s understood that the dead woman lived with her son in an apartment on Finca del Castillo for a number of years, and many of her neighbours rushed out on to the street as soon as the accident occurred.

Local police at the scene took a statement from the young driver, who it’s understood never saw the woman and her dog as she crossed the road.

The future is newer and brighter

EL CAMPELLO will be renovating street lighting throughout the municipality with the financial assistance of the Alicante province.

A total of 16 streets will benefit from the €448,305 being invested in the project, with 65 per cent of that coming from the provincial government.

Work is due to get underway in the coming days and will renovate the existing lighting that has suffered from old age and deteriorated.

It’s estimated that the new lights will reduce by half their consumption of electricity that currently stands at around €20,000 per year.

Council pushes for faster fibre optic service

by Rob Murray THE MUNICIPALITY of Teulada-Moraira is pushing for the installation of fibre optic, hoping to get it all up and working during the second part of this year.

Councillor RaĂşl Dalmau said that the process to get the fibre optic cable installed as quickly as possible are in the final stages. According to the councillor, the municipality is not the first one to get fibre optics because a project that included state-of-the-art technology had to be established first, and a system of underground cables had to be laid.

By doing so, and spending time on this study, the municipality were able to install the modern technology but make sure it was hidden away.

Fibre optic cables are made from glass fibre, delivering high speed internet and with it a more stable, safe and reliable connection. Those with digital TV will also experience much better reception.

The council of Teulada-Moraira will also profit from the introduction of this ultra-modern technology as it will now be possible to install both security and traffic cameras at strate-

Moraira-Teulada U3A Quiz Group Dinner More than forty members of the Quiz Group in Moraira-Teulada U3A celebrated another very successful and well supported year of their fortnightly quizzes with a most enjoyable evening dinner at Casa Lili in Moraira.

The quizzes, held at the Sol Park Tennis Club are held fortnightly and the questions are set in rotation by some of the enthusiastic members.

The quiz group is one of more than sixty different activity groups within the Moraira-Teulada U3A organisation and with a membership of more than 2,000 this is a large and successful club.

At the January General Meeting almost eighty new members were registered as already having joined so the extraordinary success of this very active organisation continues unabated.

Moraira-Teulada U3A holds its General Meetings on the first Monday morning of each month at the Salon GL, Avenida Mediteraneo, Teulada whose entrance is just below the large Bertomeu Electrical shop and the Bar Mediteraneo and those interested in joining can do so between 9.30am and 10.30am at those meetings.

Tourism councilor Carlos Linares will personally be in attendance at FITUR which is being held in Madrid until this Sunday, January 21.

Lions Club donate life-saving equipment

GRATEFUL: Lions Club donating to the municipal swimming pool

by Mark Rogers THE village of Benitatchell has been able to add to the services on offer to its residents following more support from the Lions Club.

They now have a defibrillator unit installed in the municipal swimming pool thanks to the donation. With the local police cars also habitually carrying around their own defibrillators and oxygen machines, Benitatchell is one of the highest prepared municipalities in the region when it comes to cardiac issues.

The new piece of equipment on site guarantees, for the first time ever, the ability to respond to a medical emergency at the pool until the paramedics arrive at the scene.

The Councillor for Health, Dirk Rheindorf, and the Councillor for Sports, Manolo Segarra, thanked the Lions Club for the donation of this defibrillator that will be decisive in saving the lives of many of the local residents should they suffer a heart attack or cardiac arrest.

“The Lions Club is always aware of the needs of the municipality and are very involved, especially in this area. They have donated defibrillators and oxygen therapy machines to the police, blood pressure monitors to the health centre and now they have responded quickly with their generosity when we have asked for a defibrillator for the pool”, said the very grateful councillors.

Pedestrianisation project marches on BENIDORM City Council has announced another street that will be shortly fully pedestrianised. The news follows the completion of the programme of works on Calle Gerona and those of Calle Tomás Ortuño and Calle Doctor Pérez Llorca that are currently under construction and are due for completion within weeks. A total of €380,000 has been invested in the project which will not only result in pavements and roads at the same height but a number of improvements to the subsoil where the works take place.

One month completion deadline for road improvements RESIDENTS and road users alike living in San Vicente del Raspeig were given a belated Christmas present with the announcement of a major series of road improvements in the municipality.

2018 has begun with a €334,000 investment in two projects that will vastly improve the poor condition of the roads throughout the municipality and will concentrate on those that have deteriorated the most.

The programme of works – that the contracts state must be completed

within one month – will see calles Monóvar, Jávea, Dénia, Ancha de Castelar, San Isidro, Gabriel Miró, Hernán Cortés y Aviación, Montoyos, Bretón de los Herreros and Bailén benefit most from the investment.

Private company Involucura has been awarded the €201,731 contract for the above works, whereas Tizor is responsible for the remaining €132,632 of the total that will be spent on the eastern part of San Vicente and concentrated on la Baiona Baja, el Rabosar and the new road that leads to Busot.

ALFAZ DEL PI: Council believes official figures not wholly reflective

by Dave Bennett Alfaz del Pi will lose more than €1,000,000 of income due to a severe reduction of their padrón numbers.

Following the release of the latest figures from the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) the municipality is more than 3,000 people down in one year. Apart from the financial loss, another consequence – if the figures remain the same at this time next year – will be the reduction of four councillors that will take effect

after the May 2019 local elections.

In 2017, Alfaz del Pi in the Marina Baixa has 18,394 official residents which is a drop of 15 per cent compared to the previous year (21,494). It’s a large and unexpected drop and shows the lowest number for the municipality for 10 years.

According to sources in the Spanish press, members of the City Council do not believe that the official figures are a genuine representation of the actual numbers living under their control, but have to accept that an immediate consequence will be a loss of an estimated €1m that comes

from central Government each year and based on the padrón returns.

The municipality has already sent out some 6,000 letters to people explaining the benefits to the residents of being registered on the padrón. In addition, they’ve launched a radio campaign in several languages and spoken to a number of clubs and associations that have mainly foreign members to encourage their registration.

The municipality of La Nucia faces a similar situation with a 2,000 drop in their latest population figures.

This new service will come complete with an emergency paramedic trained to assist in the cases of cardiac arrests or other serious accidents.

Not so cool cats by

Monday morning and it was the time of year that I dread and Ozzy and Woody, our two rescued felines, positively hate.

It was the day for their annual booster shots.

Not that they have any awareness of dates, but as soon as they catch a glimpse of the pet carrier being carted in, they do a 0-60 that makes the Jaguar F Type look pedestrian as they dash for their hidey-holes.

When they were young it was a relatively easy task to coax them into the carrier together, but as time passed they wised up to the fact that this contraption meant a trip to a strange smelling building peopled by stranger smelling humans intent on stabbing them in the neck with a vicious looking spike.

So we gave up trying to take them together because invariably as we opened the door to push cat number two inside, cat number one would explode out and

disappear for the next three hours, necessitating a phone call to the vet to make a fresh appointment.

We tried bringing the basket in to the house several days in advance just to get them used to seeing the darn thing there. And it worked, but only once, because stupid they are not.

Now we make two separate appointments and go for the full-on approach.

This entails me whistling nonchalantly then making a quick grab and bundling one of the little dears into the carrier before he knows what’s happening. Looks good on paper, but in practice it has one serious flaw.

Out go all four legs splayed across the door of the carrier, clinging on for dear life like a cartoon cat and shrieking disapproval.

Twenty minutes later and bloodied, I arrive at the vets with Ozzy silently pressing himself into the rear of the carrier. His philosophy seems to be: ‘If I

can’t see then, they can’t see me’.

Now the situation is reversed because just you try getting him out. But eventually we do, then with the poor little bloke trembling and desperately snuggling into me he takes his medicine, after which of course he leaps back into the carrier like it’s the most desirable place on Earth.

I take him home, have a quick mug of desperately needed tea liberally laced with brandy, then repeat the whole process with Woody who the Princess has thoughtfully isolated in the galeria.

It’s a bit easier this time, but whereas Ozzy lapses into silence after capture, Woody is intent on giving it large vocally and breaks into the cat’s version of ‘The Ball of Inverness’, all twenty eight mucky verses. If the vet’s office was any further away, this would have me leaping from a moving vehicle in desperation, but as it is, on entering the waiting room Woody’s vocal talents have the

dogs howling; a hamster going toes up, and the charming receptionist handing in her resignation.

But that’s all behind us now, at least for another year. The boys are sprawled on the back of the sofa – their favourite place - like tree leopards, and seem to have forgiven me.

The tin of red salmon probably helped.

A romp through the woods with 'Goldilocks' Goldilocks and the Three Bears are heading to the Teatro Olimpia, Oliva, for their picnic celebration. Will you be celebrating with them? And will you be booing and hissing when the evil Queen Bee and her minions appear?

Sitting trembling in my doctor’s waiting room recently – I’m as comfortable with medical check-ups as Trump is with Mexicans – I spotted a photograph in an old Spanish magazine that accompanied an article about folk who collect perfume bottles.

It was a picture of a small blue Bakelite case from the 1940s that contained a perfume called Evening in Paris – and I was immediately projected 65 years back in time to my mother’s bedroom.

On her dressing table was the identical item, one that totally fascinated me as a five-year-old, and I played with it more than with any of my toys.

I gathered from the article that this reproduction of a door with his-andher shoes outside of it is highly prized by collectors, and can sell for anything between €100 and €200 depending on its condition.

After I saw the Doc, who told me I was as healthy as a horse and I would stay so if I would only cut down on my consumption of Famous Grouse whisky, I called my sister in South Africa, who cleared mum’s house after her death, and asked whether she remembered the Night in Paris box.

“Sure,” she said. When I asked her whether she still had it, back came the reply: “No, it went into the trash with all her other junk.”

Now back in the 1990s, when I began

collecting art deco, I befriended a guy called Charlie who did house clearances for a living, and agreed that he could use my garage to store stuff he would either sell at car boot sales or take to the local recycling centre – so long as he let me pick over the items first.

This way I managed to accumulate a quite valuable collection of art deco pieces ranging from Bakelite jewellery to cocktail cabinets and even dining-room suites.

Charlie, at that time, couldn’t distinguish a piece of Moorcroft pottery from a sixpenny Woolworths’ vase and thought Clarice Cliff was a beauty spot in Sussex, but he was a quick learner, and this led to a partnership and, ultimately, the opening of an art deco store in Greenwich in London.

One memorable day he pulled up outside my house in his big white van (well, it may have been white when Noah was nailing the last plank of his ark into place, but was now a yellowy grey) and he was smiling broadly.

“Hit pay dirt”, he said. He opened the rear doors and pointed at a battered old washing machine.

“You’re having a laugh. What are we going to do with that thing?” I asked.

“Dump it. But first we’ll remove this.”

He opened the machine and took out bundles of cash.

The money, totalling just over

£5,000, had been hidden by an old man who died, and his family had called Charlie to clear out the house. While relatives were having a blazing row over who should have what of their dad’s belongings, Charlie looked into the machine before hauling it out, and spotted the dosh.

“But, but, but,” I spluttered.

You’ve got to give that back.”

He replied: “I would have done, but those people were the nastiest creatures I’d ever come across. They abused each other, coming to blows at one point, then started abusing me. They even had the cheek to say I was overcharging them to clear the premises. So, finders, keepers.”

I wanted no part of it, and told Charlie he could keep the money. But the machine was only a small part of a much bigger haul. The old man had a wonderful collection of art deco crockery and several pieces of vintage Lalique glass collectively worth a whole lot more than five grand.

Why did the family not keep of these items? Charlie chuckled and said: “The

Philistines thought it was just trash, and told me to get it out of their sight.”

Tourism winners and losers Tourism in Greece, Germany, France and Turkey has been ravaged by the refugee crisis. These countries have endured lethal terrorist attacks that have damaged a crucial source of taxes.

Off-the-beaten-path locations like Bulgaria and Croatia are raking in travel revenues. Poland and Hungary along with the Czech Republic and Slovenia are expected to benefit from an increase in tourists who before the crisis would opt for conventional destinations.

More traditional tourist resorts like Spain and Portugal benefit from travellers’ aversion to afflicted countries. The Iberian Peninsula has been relatively untouched by the self-inflicted refugee crisis that plagues London, Paris and is widespread in Germany.

Spain has endured dreadful attacks but dodged the refugee related violence bullet suffered by France, Germany, the Low Countries and Sweden. Hotel occupancy in Brussels plummeted to 62 per cent.

Germans are playing it safe and stay at home behind locked doors. Heidelberg suffered a 40 percent drop in Far Eastern tourism and a 10 percent drop in American visits.

According to Turkey’s ministry of tourism, approximately 41% less tourists visited the country compared to the same month last year.

Istanbul, June arrivals hit 2.5 million. In the same month last year the number was more than 4.1 million.

The ministry noted a remarkable decrease of tourists from Germany and Russia. Arrivals from Germany in June fell by almost 38%, while visits from Russia dropped by 93.1%.

Russia’s security concerns for its citizens have since been met by Turkey and Egypt. High spending Russian tourists are now restoring the prosperity of resorts that once contributed greatly to each country’s tax revenues.

Greek tourism has also been devastated since German Chancellor Angela Merkel notoriously flung open Europe’s doors, Greece being a transitory country.

Christiana Kalogirou, regional governor of the North Aegean, told euractiv. com that the immigration crisis had seriously affected tourism in the region.

The island of Lesvos suffered a 68% drop in visitors compared to 2015.

According to latest data tourist arrivals to the north Aegean Sea’s islands has dropped by 70%. Mytilene’s airport services published figures show a 62.8% decrease in foreign passengers in Lesvos in July.

6,841 European tourists on 47 international flights landed on the island of Lesvos in July. In the same month last year, 18,373 people landed with 130 flights. Similarly, in the island of Chios in July 535 visits on 18 flights were recorded. Last July the number was 1,887, a 71.65% decrease.

Over the last couple of months, I’ve had several concerned calls from people who have received letters and emails from their banks, pension and investment providers. The subject of these letters and emails has been along the lines of ‘Certificate of Status for Automatic Exchange of Information’, ‘Common Reporting Standards’ or ‘Individual Tax Residency Self Certification’.

These letters will be asking you to confirm a few simple details including your address, Taxpayer Identification Number (NIE here in Spain) and other information.

So why do these financial institutions suddenly want all this information?

On January 1st, 2017, the UK and Spain, along with all other EU countries, and many others Worldwide, agreed to a system of financial information sharing in an unprecedented global crack-down on tax evasion.

This means that your financial information, including the movement and balance of money in any financial product you hold, will now be automatically shared with your local tax authority here in Spain.

What does this mean for expats living in Spain?

There are two main areas of concern. The first is for those who live in Spain for more than 183 days a year but have not correctly registered as a Spanish resident – you should apply for the official documentation as soon as

possible to ensure you are paying your taxes correctly.

The second relates to the Spanish ‘Modelo 720’ which is a legal requirement to declare overseas assets worth more than €50,000 or GBP equivalent, to the Spanish tax authorities each Spring. Failure to make this declaration currently results in a minimum fine of €10,000 per asset group and up to 150% of unpaid taxes. The Automatic Exchange of Information will ensure that the Spanish tax authorities receive this information whether you have made the declaration or not, but if they find out before you complete the Modelo 720, then the fines will apply.

It is important to understand that financial arrangements set-up for UK residents, including ISAs, Premium Bonds, UK Investment Bonds and others, are not Spanish compliant. They are not designed for Spanish residents, can create complex accounting requirements and will not generally offer tax benefits here in Spain.

There are equivalent products available for Spanish residents created by well-known institutions like The Prudential and Old Mutual Wealth, which are, subject to suitability, available to Spanish residents through Chorus Financial. These products are not reportable under Modelo 720 and offer tax efficient growth in a similar manner to their equivalent UK products.

Future of the UK State Pension.

Is there one?

WARNINGS that the UK State Pension pot will ‘run dry’ in 2035 have led to a number of concerned reactions.

Adrian Boulding, Director of Policy at NOW: Pensions said: “The warning from the Government Actuary’s Department demonstrates just how precarious the state pension really is.

“Increasing National Insurance contributions by 5 per cent could go some way to mitigate this issue. But increasing NICs is easier said than done and raises uncomfortable questions around intergenerational fairness.

“To protect against an uncertain future, having workplace pension savings is essential which is where auto enrolment has the potential to make a big difference.”

Those in the pensions industry think it’s not surprising that the Government Actuary Department has reached this conclusion that state pension funding levels are dwindling. The current system is dangerously unsustainable when taking into account how technology and rising life expectancy could transform the working landscape

over the next decade or two. The UK currently spends £100bn every year on the State Pension and that this is expected to double over the next 20 years and double again in the following 20 years, it is clear that the current system needs to change.

Calum Cooper, Partner at Hymans Robertson said: “The chances are that our working landscape will look radically different over the next few decades. Life expectancy is continuing to rise faster than the State Pension age meaning many people will feel compelled to continue

working well into “retirement”. In fact, our own longevity analysis found that the state pension age should now be at 74, if it had kept pace with life expectancy from the Second World War. “However, all of this could be swamped if the predicted potential for technological unemployment by AI comes true. The Bank of England and PwC have estimated that 1 in 3 jobs are currently in danger from automation.

Clearly there is a wide range of outcomes but this outcome would be massive and would have a devastating impact not only on NI financing but would cause demands on state support to reach an all-time high.”

Credit card charges a thing of the past HIDDEN charges for paying with a debit or credit card have been banned, helping millions of UK consumers to avoid rip-off fees when spending their hard-earned money.

So-called ‘surcharging’ has become commonplace, particularly online, with many retailers hitting people with surprise charges just before they are about to make a purchase. Some retailers have been known to add charges which are far higher than it costs them to process a payment. It is estimated that surcharging cost Brits £166 million in 2015.

The ban (which came into force from last Saturday) means that it will be unlawful for retailers to charge additional fees when someone uses a particular credit or debit card, or other payment systems like PayPal, to make a purchase. This will ensure consumers can be confident that there won’t be any nasty surprises, and they won’t be penalised for wanting to pay in a particular way.

The new rules will be enforced by Trading Standards who will have the power to take civil enforcement action against traders who breach the regulations. It will also entitle customers to receive a refund of any unlawful surcharge they have paid and enable them, if necessary, to take legal action to recover any such surcharge.

The ban on credit and debit card surcharges is effective across the EU, and will apply to all purchases made where the banks of the consumer and retailer are within the EEA. In the vast majority of other circumstances surcharges are capped at the cost to the retailer for processing the payment. The UK Government took the decision to also include other payment methods such as PayPal in the ban to further protect consumers.

Robin Hood – The Panto at Careline Theatre this week Herman (Andy Crabb), Nurse Nora (Peter Clague) and Friar Tuck (Ian Bennett) Robin Hood – The Panto, directed by Marian Carter, is playing this week at the Careline Theatre in Alcalali. It has all the traditional ingredients of the classic panto.

10 ways to make your eyes “POP” 1. If you have a hard time using soft eyeliner pencils, draw a thick line onto your hand, use a stiff eye brush to pick up the pigment and then apply to your eye.

2. Need eye drops but don’t want to ruin your makeup? Breathe air in through your nose as you drop them into your eyes. Your tear ducts will suck in the drops before they have a chance to fall down your face.

3. Use a flesh coloured liner on the water rim of your lower lash line to make eyes look bigger and brighter.

4. Apply a shimmery champagne colour in the inner corner of your eyes to brighten your whole face.

5. Apply highlighter onto your brow bone.

6. Swap out your neutral black or brown liner for a brightly coloured one instead.

7. Apply concealer to your under-eye circles after foundation (not before) to better camouflage them.

8. Use eye shadow made for your eye colour.

9. To correct eye makeup mistakes or sharpen a cat eye, dip a cotton bud in eye makeup remover and erase the offending makeup.

10. To make your eye colour stand out, apply black liner around the entire eye, including the water line.

What your tongue says about Bumps, patches, and spots in your mouth can be harmless.

But sometimes, they can give clues to what’s going on with your overall health. Infections, stress, medication issues, and even aging can make their marks on your tongue. Find out what your tongue is telling you and when you should see your doctor or dentist.

White patches Creamy white spots could be thrush, a fungal infection (shown here). It often happens after an illness or medications throw off the balance of bacteria in your mouth. White patches that look lacy could be lichen planus, which means your immune system is attacking the tissues in your mouth. If you see hard, flat, white areas that can’t be scraped away, it could be leukoplakia, which is linked to cancer. Let your dentist know about any white patches you see.

“Hair” on your tongue If your tongue has a coating that looks like black, brown, or white fur, you might have hairy tongue. Those “hairs” are proteins that turn normal, small bumps into longer strands, where food and bacteria get caught. It should

go away when you brush or scrape your tongue. If you have hairy, white patches that you can’t scrape off, it might be oral hairy leukoplakia. It can happen to people infected with viruses like Epstein-Barr or HIV. Black tongue Hairy tongue can be black in colour.

But your tongue can also go dark after you take an antacid with an ingredient called bismuth. For some people, it stains the tongue black when it mixes with saliva. It’s harmless and goes away once you stop taking the medicine.

Bright red tongue A strawberry-red tongue could be an early sign of Kawasaki disease, a rare, serious illness that inflames blood vessels all over the body, most often in children. It’s also a symptom of scarlet fever. If your red tongue is also smooth and you have pain in your mouth, it might be a sign that your body doesn’t have enough vitamin B3.

Burning feeling If your tongue feels like you scalded it with hot coffee and tastes metallic or bitter, you may have burning mouth syndrome. It might mean a problem with the nerves in your tongue. Some health problems, like dry mouth, infections, acid reflux, and diabetes may cause it, too. For some people,

acidic foods like pineapple as well as toothpaste, mouthwash, candy, or gum also make their mouth burn.

Smooth tongue A tongue without any small bumps on the top may look glossy red. You may get it if you don’t get enough of some nutrients like iron, folic acid, or B vitamins. Infections, celiac disease, or some medications can also cause it. If you have patches of smooth areas next to bumpy ones, it could be geographic tongue. The spots can come and go, and sometimes they hurt or burn. It's harmless, but it could be linked to psoriasis or lichen planus.

Bumps Under the tongue is a common spot for canker sores - small, painful, reddish bumps that come and go on their own. A single, painful bump at the tip could be transient lingual papillitis, “lie bumps,” which can pop up if your tongue gets irritated. A virus can also cause lots of little bumps on the tip and sides. If you have a lump on or under your tongue that hurts and doesn’t go away, let your doctor or dentist know.

They’ll want to check you for oral cancer.

Soreness Your tongue has lots of nerve endings, so it can really hurt if you bite or injure it. Canker sores, lichen

Lip fillers - not only for celebrities!

Macroglossia It’s when your tongue is too big compared to the rest of your mouth. It can take up so much room that your doctor might find imprints of your teeth on its sides. Your doctor will try to figure out and treat the underlying condition, which may be hypothyroidism, an infection, or allergies, among others.

A patient shared her concerns with the doctor, and he assured her that this is a normal aging sign, but also it’s possible and easy to do something about it.

Most fillers are based on hyaluronic acid - which is injected into the lip, to increase volume and size. The hyaluronic acid fillers work by not only plumping the lip directly but also trapping water within lips for a natural, plump pout. As the lip gets a plumped natural size, also the lines around the mouth will get more stretched and less visible. The filler can also be put in the line of the lip, and the result is very natural, with a small lifted sensation.

Fissured tongue Deep grooves can form on your tongue as you age. They also are linked to Down syndrome, psoriasis, and Sjögren's syndrome.

They’re harmless, but you should gently brush your tongue to clear food and bacteria. The grooves might get better when your doctor treats the condition that’s causing them, if there is one.

Men should also be aware of breast cancer BREAST CANCER is often thought of as something that only affects women, but men can get it in rare cases. It develops in the small amount of breast tissue men have behind their nipples.

It usually occurs in men over 60, but can very occasionally affect younger men.

Signs of breast cancer in men include a lump in the breast, which is usually hard, painless and doesn't move around within the breast; the nipple turning inwards (inverted nipple); fluid oozing from the nipple (nipple discharge), which may be streaked with blood; a sore or rash around the nipple that doesn't go away; the nipple or surrounding skin becoming hard, red or swollen and small bumps in the armpit (swollen glands).

You should visit your doctor if you have a lump in your breast; any other worrying

symptoms, such as nipple discharge; a history of breast cancer (in men or women) in close members of your family and you're worried about your chances of getting it.

It's very unlikely you have cancer, but it's best to get checked out. Your doctor will examine your breast and can refer you for tests and scans for breast cancer if needed.

If you don't have symptoms but have a clear family history of breast cancer, your doctor may refer you to a genetic specialist to discuss your risk of getting it.

There are some inherited genes that increase your risk of cancer and a blood test can be done to check for these.

The treatment for breast cancer in men depends on how far the cancer has spread.

These could include surgery to remove the affected breast tissue and nipple (mastectomy) and some of the glands in your armpit; radiotherapy; chemotherapy or a selection of other medicines that help stop breast cancer growing – including tamoxifen and trastuzumab (Herceptin).

Many men have surgery followed by one or more of the other treatments which can help stop the cancer coming back in the future.

Calpe U3A Bowling The U3A green bowls group has been in operation for several years. It is very friendly. They meet at the “Paraiso Mar” bowls green at Levante beach (which is a public green). In a warmup 50-overs game in Sydney, skipper Owen Morgan scored 81 not out as England (259-5) beat an Australia XI (258) by five wickets and then, in the first of five ODIs in Melbourne last Sunday, Jason Roy smashed 180 and Joe Root was 91 not out as England powered home by five wickets, scoring a record 308-5 against the Aussies’ 303. The second ODI was in Brisbane earlier today.

After 68 days and 3,000 miles at sea, four Yorkshire lasses have become the oldest allfemale crew to cross the Atlantic. Niki Doeg and Helen Butters (both 45), Frances Davies (47) and Janette Benaddi (51) began their journey in the Canary Islands on 20 December and arrived in Antigua a week yesterday.

Also, four male rowers have also set a world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic. George Biggar, Dicky Taylor, Peter Robinson and Stuart Watts spent 29 days and 15 hours at sea during their 3,000-mile crossing from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean. A truly great achievement by both quartets.
