The project was voted most popular by residents in the council’s ‘Your Teulada-Moraira, your say’ initiative – with 295 out of 462 votes. The council will spend approximately €290,000 executing the project, around the same as last year when citizens voted for the council to purchase the Pinaret plots and create a green zone. The council is still working on the Pinaret project which, when completed, will offer residents a place to relax close to centre of Teulada. Works will begin on the CV-743 road next year.

by Tahnee Wright THE BUSINESSMAN accused of trying to bribe Benitachell Mayor Josep Antoni Femenia was sentenced to two years in prison at Alicante Provincial Court earlier this week.

Fernando Jesus TL must also pay a €5,400 fine for offering the mayor €50,000 in exchange for speeding up the formalities of a lawsuit he intended to file against Benitachell council.

A majority seven of nine members of the jury found the businessman guilty for bribery.

The events date back to May 2012, when the council demolished a petrol station on the road that connects Benitachell and Javea.

The demolition was ordered Superior Court of Justice of the Comunitat Valenciana (TSJCV).

One year on, in May 2013, Jesus TL, who owned the petrol station, filed a claim for equity liability.

Another year later in August 2014, he arrived at Benitachell Town Hall and asked the mayor to go for coffee with him.

It was at this meeting that Jesus TL told the mayor he intended on filing a

Student awarded for ‘excellence’ in Vietnam

by Tahnee Wright A 20-YEAR-OLD student from the University of Valencia travelled to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam recently, where she was awarded the prize for excellence in the Silk Road University Network (SUN)’s first ever writing contest.

Young Estela Martí Simo - who is studying translation and mediation and lives in Denia – won the prize for her poem ‘Nuevo rumbo hacia ti’ (New direction to you).

Vicent Grimalt paid honour to Estela, presenting her a CD of poems – ‘El Llibre de Denia’ - by Vicent Andres Estelle.

Estela expressed her greatest thanks and told of how “proud” she was to represent not just Spain, but the Valencian Community and Denia: “Winning came as a complete shock, I am very happy.”

Her poem has already been translated into Chinese, English, German, Korean and Russian and Estela herself will now translate it into Valencian.

Town Hall against gender violence A BANNER has been hung from the balcony of Benidorm Town Hall which reads ‘Benidorm contra la violencia de genero’ (Benidorm against gender violence) as the city prepares to celebrate International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women tomorrow, Saturday November 25.

Students of the IES Pere Maria Orts i Bosch school proudly held a series of posters they designed as Councillor of Culture Ana Pellicer and Councillor of Equality Paquita Ripoll presented the day’s programme of events.

Ripoll said: “It is great that the children are raising their voices against this social scourge. It is of fundamental importance because in them is the change towards a more just and egalitarian society."

Tomorrow, supporters will gather on the plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de Espana at 10.00am where a manifesto will be read, followed by a minute’s silence.

At 11.00am, a march will weave through the city’s streets before a 1.00pm service is held outside the Els Tolls bulding to pay homage to

Something strange A CLARINET TEACHER from Benidorm’s Conservatorio Municipal de Musica is being investigated for allegedly harassing a minor. The complaint against the male teacher was lodged a couple of weeks ago by another member of staff from the Conservatorio. The victim of the alleged harassment is a 14-year-old female student who told the member of staff – in front of

14 other students - that the clarinet teacher made her do sit-ups whist she played the instrument and he held her feet. The young student said she found this strange and explained the teacher made other female students do this, too. The complainant told the student to tell her parents and cooperated with the mother of the child in lodging the complaint.

Tear it down and start again

AT THE beginning of the month, the Ministry of Education visited Pedreguer and announced that the Generalitat would completely refurbish the El Trinquet school and improve facilities at the L’Alfas school, installing a gym and a lift. Now, just three weeks later, the Ministry has proposed that instead or refurbishing the El Trinquet school, it should be demolished and completely rebuilt.

The plans form part of the Generalitat’s ‘Edificant’ initiative, designed to streamline the procedures for the construction and improvement of schools across the Valencian Community, for which the Ministry of Education has budgeted €213 million in 2018 alone.

The fate of the El Trinquet school is to be decided before the end of the year.

More immigrants arrive

A BOAT arrived on the shores of Javea last Saturday and two immigrants were arrested on the spot.

Another two immigrants managed to flee, evading police.

The detainees were treated by Red Cross medics and both appeared to be in stable health. A few hours later, police caught up with the other two immigrants and arrested them. The boat is the seventh to arrive on the Marina Alta this year.

The immigrants, all of Arab origin, will be passed to the National Police who will organise their repatriation.

British mother-of-three passes away in Benidorm A British mother-of-three who was left in a coma after suffering a bleed on her brain while on holiday in Benidorm passed away earlier this week.

Donna Proudfoot from County Durham, England was enjoying a long

weekend in the Costa Blanca capital to celebrate her 50th birthday with her husband and other family members earlier this month when, without any explanation, she fell ill in the night. She was rushed to the nearby hospital where she remained in a

coma until Tuesday night when she lost her fight for life.

Speaking before Mrs Proudfoot died, family member Kirsty Harker told the English press the family were all devastated by what had happened but were incredibly grateful to mem-

bers of the community back at home in England for their support.

“We are overwhelmed by what has been done for us,” she said.

“We can’t thank people enough.

We have had massive support from the community.

AN investigation into the sale of counterfeit goods at Denia’s weekly market resulted in the arrest of 5 people and the seizure of over 500 items, worth approximately €30,000.

Calpe’s Guardia Civil initiated the investigation and found out that the counterfeit goods sellers had a surveillance network at the market meaning they were alerted of police presence and could hide the fake items.

Guardia Civil officers later visited the market undercover, in plain clothes and surprised the sellers before they had time to hide the counterfeit goods.

Officers arrested five men – four Senegalese nationals aged between 30 and 36 years old and a 29-year-old Moroccan as alleged perpetrators of crimes against industrial property.

They seized 517 items including clothing, footwear and accessories made to look like those from designers such as Adidas and Nike.

Operation ‘Ventus’ - a collaboration operation with police forces from Germany, Italy Morocco and the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the DEA - began last year after a group of people caught the Guardia Civil’s attention as they trafficked drugs out of Denia marina.

Expats get healthy Brexit indicator but alert ‘not to stay under radar’

by Glenn Scott THE clearest assurance yet that healthcare –of major concern to tens of thousands of British expats following Brexit - is “more or less settled.”

And the same goes for pensions and residence rights, according to British Ambassador Simon Manley when he updated a packed university gathering in Elche, on the Costa Blanca.

“Healthcare, in particular, is not a controversial subject within the general negotiations as both sides want an agreement,” he stressed.

The meeting hosted by Brexpats in Spain and moderated by their regional representative Richard Hill, was attended by more than 100 visitors at the Miguel Hernandez University.

It was addressed by the Ambassador and the British Consul in Alicante Sarah-Jane Morris as well as legal representatives from Pellicer and Heredia, regional Spanish politicians and law professors from the university.

What came through was the 100 per cent support from the Spanish authorities and their people – there were a number of

Spanish at the meeting – that an agreement can be made for UK citizens living in Spain.

“The Spanish politicians at all levels of government are very keen that there is no disruption to any Briton’s day-to-day life here,” the ambassador stressed.

He opened by thanking all the individuals and organisations that had contributed information, ideas and suggestions in recent months, with him and the Consul attending more than 70 such events and meetings.

“They have enriched our understanding of the individual circumstances of the people living in Spain and everything has been fed back to London”, the ambassador added.

“Spanish politicians at all levels of government are very keen that there is no disruption to any Briton’s day-to-day life here.”

Questions from the floor covered several issues but no concrete answers could be given from any source.

The Ambassador expressed disappointment that agreements hadn’t yet been reached on future voting rights at local elections and recognition of professional quali-

fications, explaining that the UK wanted to guarantee such rights for EU citizens in the UK, but as yet it was something the EU weren’t prepared to reciprocate on.

Concerning the status of UK nationals in Spain after Brexit,and Consul Sarah-Jane Morris stressed that the advice has been the same for a long time.

“Everyone living here now should make themselves as legal as it is possible to be under the existing rules such as registering on the padrón, obtaining residencia, paying taxes, Spanish driving licences etc.

“After the UK leaves the EU, those trying to remain in Spain under the radar may begin to run into difficulties and I fear the Consular services will be inundated with people at that point.”

RTN spoke with visitor John Parkinson from San Miguel after the meeting who said: “I didn’t really learn anything new from today, but what did surprise me was the UK’s negotiating position at the talks which was more positive than is being portrayed on the news. I feel more assured that the British government are looking after us more than I thought”

Teulada-Moraira invests in its teens

by Fabio Delucci Teulada-Moraira is well on its way to becoming a UNICEF Ciudad Amiga (Child Friendly City).

The council inaugurated the children and adolescent council in May this year, and is now offering a series of workshops for the 4th graders from ESO. Part of the provincial programme ‘Menos drogas, más de ustedes’ (Less drugs, more of you), the workshops are designed to help teens develop a critical opinion, form values,

and differentiate between positive and negative behaviour.

The workshops will run until May at the Centro de Excelencia in Benissa every Friday from 5.00pm to 6:30pm.

On its website, UNICEF says: “with the Child Friendly Cities Programme, we want to contribute to improving the living conditions of children and adolescents through the promotion and implementation of effective municipal policies that guarantee their integral development with a rights approach.”

(Re) open for business Masymas (Juan Fornes Fornes, SA) re-opened its newly refurbished Benitachell store this week. The refurbishments – in line with Masymas’ new generation store concept - aim to improve the customer’s buying experience whilst increasing employee comfort together with efficiency. The store covers a total of 1,300 m2 and offers ample parking. In terms of sustainability, elements such as

state of the art insulation, a CO2 cooling system and LED lighting technology will decrease energy expenditure by up to 30 per cent in comparison to a traditional store. In terms of product innovation, the store boasts locally caught fresh fish and seafood and a new ‘Kitchen’ section, where takeaway food is prepared daily.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT in Benidorm has been adapted for guide dogs and their owners. The Llorente Bus and Radio Taxi fleets – in total 58 buses and 224 taxis – have adjusted platforms for blind people and their furry friends in an initiative together with Benidorm Lions Club. The adaptations were revealed in a ceremony on the Plaza de SS. MM. Los Reyes de Espana last week, attended by councillors Angela Llorca and Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, Benidorm Lions Club President Marga Matarranz, Pablo Delgado from Llorente Bus and Jose Antonio Gomez from Radio Taxi Benidorm. Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate said: "People who need guide dogs have every right to enjoy public transport. Their ‘pets’ have been perfectly trained and do not pose any discomfort to other users.”

Oliva beaches given a brushing up

by Rose Holmes OLIVA will receive a grant of €65,000 from the Valencian Provincial Tourism Agency to make improvements to its beaches in time for next year’s high summer season.

15 cabins will be erected along the Oliva coastline, providing beach-goers with toilets, showers and baby-changing facilities. Nine of them – three toi-

lets, three showers and three changing cubicles – will replace those already in place on Oliva’s three main beaches.

The remaining six cabins – three toilets and three disabled toilets - will be erected on smaller beaches in an aim to encourage more visitors.

They will be made of sustainable wood, incorporating light and natural ventilation, negating the need for electricity and a system will be used to wash

away waste without using any water.

Fayre raises €5,400 for the sick and needy

by Rose Holmes JALON VALLEY HELP held its annual Christmas Fayre last Sunday as stallholders arrived bright and early to set up their colourful displays offering a variety of food and drink, Christmas crafts and gifts, bags, bric-a-brac, books and cards.

The weather was very kind which enabled more stalls to be set up outside. Stallholders and visitors commented on the happy atmosphere and how impressed they were with the helpful manner in which the volunteers of the charity go out of their way to make it such an enjoyable occasion.

Entertainment was provided by the the U3A Vall del Pop Singers who sang Christmas songs and carols, there was a fashion show with the models donning outfits picked from the charity´s two shops in Alcalali and Jalon and The Nomad performed his much-loved variety of songs and kept the party going.

The accounts have still got to be finalised as there is still an odd receipt to come in, but the final figure raised is expected to be in the region of €5,400.

Elaine Horton, President, gave her personal thanks to everyone for their continued support in the charity´s 25th Anniversary Year.

The funds raised will be used to help the sick and needy in the local area.

CHRISTMAS TIME can be one of the most difficult times of the year for less fortunate families and the Charity Shop Calpe does all it can to raise extra funds to help those in need.

The shop is holding its annual Christmas Event starting this Saturday November 25 and promises this year it will be ‘bigger and better than ever’, run-

ning for nearly a week until next Friday December 1.

Next Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30 November, the shop will be open all day from 10.00am – 5.00pm with a Christmas raffle and plenty of special offers.

You can find the shop inside the gallery of Edificio Mar Azul, half-way up Avenida Gabriel Miro in Calpe, on the right hand side.

SUE AND PAT DONOVAN welcomed guests into their home in Moraira last month for another MacMillan Cancer Support event, raising an outstanding €4,100.

Auctioneer Lee, from Druids Cave, entertained the audience with his usual wit and Dave Peachey wowed the crowd with some live music.

Muku from The Kathmandu Restaurant, Moraira kindly donated €300 from a dinner organised by Sue in aid of the charity, which was well attend-

ed and enjoyed by all.

Sue and Pat said: “The number of raffle prizes which had been kindly donated by local businesses, restaurants and friends etc was amazing. Friends provided some splendid tapas and ‘tapas and drinks’ were sold for €10 a head which was very successful. We would like to thank our many friends and family who helped out on the day – without them the event could not have happened.”

U3A Marina Baixa member Colin Butterfield writes: “This is our second visit to this lovely Spanish restaurant and is the furthest that we travel for our monthly dining out, but it is well worth the journey.

Firstly, we were treated to a comprehensive cold buffet, then the main course which was a choice of many meats, fish, pasta, or paella dishes, followed by a selection of very tasty desserts. House wine, water and coffee is also included. The ambience, staff and service

were once again excellent.

Well if you managed to notice the changes in the verbs in these sentences then you did very well. In fact you have overcome a major hurdle.

As I have said before, there are quite a lot of details to study before we know all the right forms for each verb in the present tense, but that can come gradually and we’ve already covered a lot of the basic principles.

We’re now going to have a break away from the present tense and will shortly start to look at something else of a similar ilk, but today I thought we could follow a short digression and look at a small point that tends to trip a lot of people up, and that is the difference

Más - more

between más, mucho and muy. I constantly hear people get these confused, so here is a brief explanation of the difference. First of all a simple translation: más = more, mucho = a lot, muy = very.

Actually – that’s it! There is a problem that appears though when we translate things directly. For example, a lot of people know the expression “mucho calor” and have learnt to translate it as “very hot” thereby concluding that mucho must mean very. However, if we translate that phrase literally we are actually saying “a lot of heat”.

A common error is to use más (more) instead of muy (very). This can cause confusion as it might appear to be asking for more of something, when we are just making an observation. If we want to say something is very cheap, for example, we have to say muy barato, if instead we say más barato we would be asking for it to be cheaper.

Well that is a brief explanation, but perhaps it will help in some of those little transactions in life!

Whoops, the balcony’s gone to pot!

A while back I wrote an article for the Freethinker – a 136-year-old atheist magazine I have edited for almost 20 years – about the attitude of church leaders in America towards the legalisation of cannabis.

Some supported legalisation, others were dead against it. In Massachusetts, the Catholic Church spent $850,000 on an anti-pot crusade. The cash, which could have been spent on something worthwhile – like feeding the poor – went down the drain, because, in December, 2016, Massachusetts wisely made the possession and cultivation of marijuana legal for adults.

And so began the process of establishing a regulated, multi-million dollar marijuana industry.

Today, it is legal in seven US states for adults to use cannabis as a recreational drug, and 16 states allow it to be used solely for medical purposes.

When I wrote my piece, I pointed out how easy it was to obtain cannabis seeds and identified a Dutch company, Sensi Seeds, as being one of the world’s top suppliers. To my astonishment, a week later, I received an email from the company, thanking me for the mention.

To show their gratitude, they offered me a complimentary selection of seeds. Not knowing what the legal situation was in Spain, I decided to make some inquiries before I took up the offer. Naturally, the last thing I wanted to do was break the law.

One website informed me that “Spain has become one of the most cannabis-liberal parts of Europe for its relaxed attitude towards marijuana. It is a decentralised country, meaning that the laws vary from place to place, and any region can go about setting up its own marijuana laws. It is one of the most comfortable places to consume cannabis, and in certain circumstances, even grow.”

So I said yes to Sensi Seeds, but only germinated three of the dozen seeds they sent me because – believe me – this was just an experiment to satisfy my own curiosity.

At this point I should point out that I have always supported cannabis legalisation because it’s a proven fact that dope is far less dangerous than alcohol.

But I stopped using it about 20 years ago because of a growing workload. I had three jobs – one involving a lot of driving – and I felt that pot would impair my ability to properly focus on any of them.

Well, the plants flourished on our sundrenched balcony to such a n extent that, when they reached maturity, they’d grown into bushes four foot high and began to exude such an intoxicating aroma that our entire apartment was filled with the smell. What’s more, I became convinced that the increasing sluggishness of our two dogs – and their uncharacteristic demand for munchies

At this point I panicked. Although we live on the 31st floor, I feared the smell might upset our neighbours. So, at 4 am one morning I sadly bagged up the plants and disposed of them in a dumpster outside our apartment block.

I sincerely hope that the bin men put them to good use. Today, the greenery on our balcony is provided by two enormous dragon trees and a yucca plant.

Ironically, all were retrieved from a dumpster.

PART ONE… The image in the mirror is familiar, however less than before, the eyes seem a little strange, pinched, pained and less bright.

To explain, I have been diagnosed with (MCI) mild cognitive impairment this affects one in five people over the aged of 65, and as I will be 78 in three months-time I’m no exception to this devastating rule.

Ten percent of MCI suffers go onto developing dementia or alzheimer’s, there is no way of knowing who will, or who won’t, it’s a toss of the coin.

The consultant I have been seeing since earlier this year, has been guiding me through the process of trying to ward off my symptoms, which are obviously very short- term memory, anger, short temper, and now disorientation, feeling giddy and unsteadiness, I’ve had several falls, the last time I fell two weeks ago, I dislocated my jaw.

After two brain scans the last one at the University College hospital nuclear medicine department in London, added to the dementia and alzheimer’s diagnosis, my doctor now believes I have Lewy Bodies Disease which can be an extension of some of the Dementia, and has similar symptoms to Parkinson’s disease, hence my falling and unsteadiness.

Amongst all the drugs that I’m on, my consultant has given me a further one to add to the collection, this I must say has helped my condition slightly, although my sleep only lasts a few hours a night, for two or three hours. I’m plagued by nightmares, when I wake up I’m relieved.

Occasionally the medication has seemed to help, some days my speech is quicker and my search for the words is slightly easier, before my speech was very la-

boured.

I now attend a mental health clinic once a week, as I am not allowed to drive again since the DVLA asked me to return my licence to them. I’m picked up by an ambulance (thanks to the brilliant NHS) and taken with other people that have the same problem as myself to the clinic.

So, what will the outcome be? The consultant cannot tell me in the short term, in the long term with the diagnosis that I have, it probably does not look good.

I am not feeling sorry for myself I’ve had a wonderful life, travelling the world, and meeting people in the top echelons of governments, leaders of countries, and the occasional royals. The people I feel sorry for are my nearest and dearest, my saintly wife who has to put up with my rages, my wandering around during the night, and my falling over, my children are magnificent in their support and my three grandchildren are the loveliest and adoring people that anybody could wish for.

This love and attention from my family will drive me

on, as I will continue to fight off the ill effects that some days manifests itself to its fullest. Maybe soon another drug will arrive, as unsung heroes of research laboratories are constantly trying to find new cures. I have agreed to any research programmes that would need me.

While the first built Russian churches were built to accommodate 200 - 300 people the decision has since been made to build churches for no fewer than 500 people.

The largest Russian Orthodox Church so far has just been built in the southeast of the capital. The balconies, lower church and internal design of the church will be completed by the end of 2018. The church, built in the classical style, will honour the Meeting of The Lord. It is 49 meters high, will fit in 1,000 people and have 13 cupolas (domes).

As Britain turns its back on Christianity Russia is building new churches at an extraordinary rate. In Moscow alone it is expected that 200 new churches will soon bring Christians and God closer together.

Meanwhile, in Britain many churches have been razed to the ground. Thousands have been de-consecrated before being turned into bars, apartments, stores and wholesalers, even mosques. A void awaits a people destined for spiritual bankruptcy.

According to the UK Census, between 2001 and 2011 the number of Christians born in Britain fell at the rate of 10,000 each week. A continued rate of decline at the present level means British born Christians will reduce to zero by 2067. The Church of England, Britain’s traditional and all powerful spiritual faith will disappear as early as 2033.

In 2010, the head of the Russian Church, Patriarch Kirill, stated that Moscow needs at least 200 more churches to accommodate the growing number of believers in the city, and to compensate for the tens of thousands of churches destroyed during the Soviet occupation.

Funded exclusively by donations, its far-reaching goal is to make sure that all believers have churches ‘within walking distances’, especially those, who live far from the centre of Moscow, in the newer areas of the ever-expanding city.

Prior to the American-backed seizure of Imperial Russia in 1917 – 1922 there were throughout Russia listed 54,174 Christian churches. In addition there were 25,593 chapels, 1,025 monasteries, military churches and cemetery chapels. By 1987 only 6,893 churches and 15 monasteries remained.

The British are rightly labelled the most generous nation on earth when giving to worthy causes.

The top one thousand charities in the UK have combined annual receipts in excess of a staggering 19 billion pounds which is made up of donations, purchases, and legacy income.

The range covers a whole spectrum of causes and these charities include everything from animal and environmental organisations to disease research and the arts.

But even this amount is dwarfed by the estimated 37 billion raised in total through the 160 thousand charities registered in the UK. We are all familiar with the well established ones such as Cancer Research UK, Help For Heroes, Oxfam, The Salvation Army, RSPCA and a host of other household names, but amongst them there are thousands of less well known organisations dealing with localised issue and no less vital for that.

Where there is a need of help and aid for deserving cases, we Brits it seems, are always ready to put our hands in our pockets and long may that be the case.

A practice that seems to be on the increase at this time of year as we ease into the Christmas season, is to be told by friends and relatives that from now on they will not be sending cards, but will instead, donate to charity.

One of our great pleasures at Christmas time is receiving cards from our friends and acquaintances, the majority of whom live in the UK and many far flung locations, and often it is the only time of the year when we have specific contact.

We receive similar pleasure from sending cards and always include a well chosen line or two sum-

CHRISTMAS CARDS: Is this now a thing of the past? marising our year; the whole point being that we preserve and perpetuate our link with people who have played a sometimes small, but important part in our past lives.

The cost of mailing cards is a factor as are personal reasons for donating to a particular cause, but often the only reason for discontinuing the practice I suspect, is because of its time consuming nature and the hours spent in writing those few lines.

But isn’t that the point?

By putting aside the time and taking the trouble to remember our friends, we are illustrating that they are still very much in our thoughts and appreciate their attachment.

Charity is important at whatever time of year, but to risk losing that one link with friends and acquaintances in order to save time and energy, is a false and sad economy.

Is it the end of the road for QROPS? by

QROPS, or Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes, are a type of overseas pension that have been a popular option over the last 10 years with British expats, so why are Chorus not recommending them as the default option to our clients?

QROPS used to offer several benefits over UK based pensions as a transfer option if you lived abroad, but recent changes in legislation have equalised the benefits of transferring to a UK based pension, rather than a QROPS. In addition, HMRC have introduced new legislation that could lead to a potential tax charge of 25% for new QROPS applications received after March 9th 2017.

There does remain significant benefits with a QROPS for clients approaching the lifetime allowance (currently £1 million), but for the majority of people out here in Spain, there is often a better alternative.

So, what is the alternative? At Chorus,

we recommend you consider a UK based pension called a SIPP. A SIPP offers all the main benefits of a QROPS – flexible access from 55, passing on more to your loved ones, consolidating multiple pensions into one plan – but benefit from lower fees and the protection offered by UK FCA regulation coupled with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, neither of which are available with a QROPS. This can lead to substantially reduced annual costs, often saving clients thousands of pounds a year, and leading to superior growth of your pension funds.

It is worth bearing in mind that many financial advisors in Spain do not have the correct licenses or regulation required to recommend a SIPP, so may only use QROPS, even if it is not necessarily the best option for you.

We would always recommend getting a second opinion and work with UK regulated pension experts to ensure you receive the best advice.

Chorus are currently offering to review

your existing QROPS or potential pension transfer so that we can demonstrate where you could save money, and increase the security of your pension. It may be beneficial to move an existing QROPS to a SIPP, or to reconsider a QROPS application, and set up a SIPP instead. The very least you should do before signing QROPS paperwork, is get a second opinion.

‘A Gentle Introduction to Art Deco,

With over twenty-five years' experience lecturing at museums and galleries around the world, including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, Eric has broadcast for thirty years with the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

Eric has travelled around the UK with his “wickedly funny and informative” mini Antiques Roadshow.

He is well-known for his many appearances on mainstream BBC Arts programmes, with his in-depth knowledge and understanding of a vast range of antiques.

Born a Lancastrian, but now living in London, Eric is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, an Ambassador for the Prince’s Trust and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. It

became popular in the 1920s and 1930s and influenced the design of buildings, furniture, cars, movie theatres, trains, ocean liners.

Unlike the preceding Art Nouveau style, Art Deco features geometric shapes, clear and precise lines and decoration which is attached to the structure.

One of its major attributes is an embrace of technology.

During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. The style is often characterised by rich colours, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentation.

It was the first truly international architectural style.

Annual Christmas Fayre in Calpe THE PUB DELFIN in Calpe will play host to the Moftag Annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 9.

Moftag, a women’s group in Calpe have organised the fayre to raise funds for local charities. In the past, funds raised have been donated to the Food Bank, the Gar-gasindi School, Red Cross and the Maite Coronat Centre.

There will be a variety of stalls for visitors to peruse – with plenty of homemade produce and games for all the family.

A grand raffle will be held, offering visitors the chance to win some exciting prizes amongst a number of well-filled hampers.

The fayre will open at 10.30am.

ALTOGETHER NOW: The VdP Singers

VdP Singers support Jalon Valley Help THE U3A Vall del Pop Singers (VdP Singers) gave their first concert of the new season with two performances of Christmas songs and carols at Jalon Valley Help’s Christmas Fayre recently.

The Vdp Singers were smartly turned out in their red and Christmas outfits and taken through their repertoire by Musical Director, Philip Ashley. They presented many old standards mixed with some less well-known numbers, all of which were sung with gusto and much appreciated by their audience.

The VdP Singers have been with their Musical Director Ashley since February and as he says: “they continue to improve and are

singularly focused on singing for pleasure.”

Each practice session is focused on the fun of singing and having a good time.

The group meets every Tuesday at Casa de Animo, Alcalali from 2.00pm – 4.00pm. To get involved, get in touch with Pat Osborne or Sandra Welham - noeljalon@yahoo.co.uk.

For further information check out the U3A Vall del Pop website http://u3avalldelpop.com. The U3A is all about enjoyment and learning and this is particularly evident in the U3A Vall del Pop group, whose members generally meet on the first Thursday of each month at the Polivalent Centre in Murla.

Since its inception in 2012 Javea-based charity Grant a Wish has helped numerous individuals and causes. The charity raises funds through its chic boutique in Plaza de la Constitution in Javea, and through fund raising events throughout the year. So where does the money go?

We’ve long supported the men’s shelter in Gandia to the tune of approximately €3000 per year – this is donated in the form of essential food stuffs, bedding, toiletries and kitchen equipment.

Every seven to ten days two of our volunteers visit the shelter to drop off our donations. Our recent initiative of inviting people to buy a few extra kilos of fruit and vegetables at the Thursday market, and drop them into the boutique for onward delivery to the shelter, is already proving a great success. The less we have to buy the more causes and individuals we can support – just one kilo of onions makes a difference! We support children too, in several ways. The orphanage in El Verger is one of our key causes and we support this home with around €9000 each year in terms of food and general supplies. In addition we provide occasional treats for the children such as a visit to the zoo, a pizza party, plus birthday cards and gifts. Our latest initiative is to underwrite the cost of taking twelve children from the Raquel Paya school for specialist riding for the disabled lessons. These started two weeks ago and are already a great success. We are funding this project for three months (€3000) and will be delighted to hear from any individual or organisation who might like to take up some sponsorship from January onwards.

How to switch up your skincare routine for cold weather!

Breathing exercise for stress

This calming breathing technique for stress, anxiety and panic takes just a few minutes and can be done anywhere.

You will get the most benefit if you do it regularly, as part of your daily routine.

You can do it standing up, sitting in a chair that supports your back, or lying on a bed or yoga mat on the floor.

Make yourself as comfortable as you can. If you can, loosen any clothes that restrict your breathing.

If you're lying down, place your arms a little bit away from your sides, with the palms up. Let your legs be straight, or bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor.

If you're sitting, place your arms on the chair arms.

If you’re sitting or standing, place both feet flat on the ground.

Whatever position you're in, place your feet roughly hip-width apart.

• Let your breath flow as deep down into your belly as is comfortable,

without forcing it.

• Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.

• Breathe in gently and regularly.

Some people find it helpful to count steadily from one to five. You may not be able to reach five at first.

• Then, without pausing or holding your breath, let it flow out gently, counting from one to five again, if you find this helpful.

• Keep doing this for three to five minutes.

The colder months can be brutal on our skin. Between freezing temps outside and heaters blasting inside, our skin can have a hard time adjusting to the elements. “It was in June 2001. I'd just completed a great season with Millwall. We'd won the old second division championship and I'd finished as top scorer with 28 goals. There was speculation that I might be moving to a Premiership club and everything was fantastic. Then one day I was watching television with my hands resting in my shorts, as blokes tend to do. And as I felt my testicles, I thought, 'This doesn't feel right.' One was bigger than the other.

I live?' and the second was, 'Will I be able to play football again?' At that stage, the doctor couldn't give a definitive answer. I just kept asking myself: 'I'm a fit and healthy person, so how could this happen to me?' I was quickly taken for a CT scan to see if the cancer had spread further around my body, and then I had chest X-rays to check my lungs.

Fortunately, the cancer hadn't spread.

"I had an operation, which was quite straightforward, and afterwards I felt OK. Following the operation, I was lucky enough to have radiotherapy rather than chemotherapy, so I didn't lose my hair.

"If you think anything might be wrong, just go to see your GP. That's what they're there for. I understand that some men don't want to go to a doctor for any reason, let alone such a serious one that involves their private parts. But this is your life we're talking about. It takes a bigger man to go and speak to his doctor than it does to pretend nothing is wrong. So just go."

KEEPING WARM: Cats love to sit under a warm car engine Most cats prefer to snuggle up inside during the winter but if yours is the outdoors type make sure they always have a warm place they can go to at all times.

And, if it’s really cold, keep them inside even if they are unimpressed – pet cats aren’t used to the extreme cold and can develop hypothermia and frostbite.

Cats left outdoors often crawl into a warm car engine to get warm and, when the engine is started up, they can be seriously injured or even killed. They might also venture somewhere they shouldn’t and get trapped without food or water. If

in doubt, keep your cat inside.

Cats that usually go to the toilet outside may need a litter tray inside, especially when there’s frost on the ground.

Make sure your cat is fitted with a microchip so if they do wander off in search of a warm place they can be traced back to you.

Look out for hidden dangers over the festive season – poinsettia and lilies are popular Christmas plants but they’re actually poisonous to cats. And keep tinsel out of reach if you don’t fancy a trip to the vet to have it removed from your cat’s gut or rear-end.

BMW breaks the two million sales mark ON THE RISE: World-wide sales up 3.4 per cent

FOR the first time ever at this point in the year, the BMW Group has delivered more than two million vehicles to customers around the world.

A total of 2,008,849 vehicles have been sold in the first ten months of 2017, an increase

of 3.4 per cent on the same period last year. October sales of 197,601 (+0.8 per cent) achieved the same high level as last year, despite the current changeover of the significant BMW X3 model, the new version of which is arriving in dealerships during

November.

“Our sales results for the first ten months of the year confirm the broad range and appeal of our model line-up,” commented Dr Ian Robertson, BMW AG Management Board Member for Sales and Brand BMW.

“Despite significant model changeovers and headwinds in some of our biggest markets, we have delivered over two million vehicles to customers in the first ten months of the year.

Vehicles as wide-ranging as the BMW X1, the BMW 5 Series, 7 Series and the BMW i3, to name just a few, have all contributed to that growth,” he continued.

The BMW Group’s unrivalled range of nine electrified vehicles boosted their sales by a total of 63.7 per cent in the first ten months of 2017, with a total of 78,096 delivered to customers.

Independent research confirms the BMW Group’s leading position when it comes to combined sales of battery and plug-in hybrid electrified vehicles worldwide, with the company well ahead in Germany and Europe as a whole.
