Grand theft auto on the Costa Blanca A 30-YEAR-OLD Lithuanian man is in prison pending sentencing after he was arrested for ‘carjacking’ not one, not two, but three vehicles in the space of 24 hours last weekend. The criminal was arrested in Gandia as the result of a joint operation between police in the capital of Safor and police in Oliva. The string of robberies began last Friday in Calpe when the man assaulted a 30-year-old woman who was about to get in her car. He snatched her keys and sped off on the N-332 north towards Valencia. He drove “recklessly, at great speed” along the road that links Costa Blanca South and Costa Blanca North, leading several other road users to report him to the police, initiating a search operation. The man made it to l’Alqueria having passed through several Marina Alta municipalities including Oliva. In l’Alqueria, he jumped out of the stolen vehicle and again preyed on a woman who was about to get in her car, this time a 50-year-old who was just leaving work. The criminal darted off in the second stolen vehicle, headed for the N-332 when he realised he was being chased by the police. Cornered, he abandoned

LIZ AND PETER EMMETT celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Wednesday. Founding members of Free Spirits HD - an English-speaking Harley Davidson enthusiast group – it seemed only right that they celebrate the occasion in style at HD Dream Trips and Bar in Moraira. Over 50 over Liz and Peter’s friends gathered just after midday and waited in anticipation for the couple – Liz was under the impression Peter was taking her out for a lavish lunch but was surprised (and very pleasantly!) to see all the familiar faces as they pulled onto the forecourt. Peter had been secretly planning the party for weeks with the help of good friend and fellow biker, Nigel Webb, to whom he expressed his greatest thanks… to be told “never again!” The surprises didn’t stop there as the bar staff brought out a special ‘Harley’ cake, amidst many teary eyes as Peter said a short but sweet speech, telling of his adoration for his “special girl” Liz. Congratulations to you, Liz and Peter on your silver wedding anniversary and here’s to many more years to come.

Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano: La Nucia’s 250,000 square metre sports facility

La Nucia goes for gold

THIS WEEK, representatives from The European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe) visited La Nucia, following the municipality’s application to be crowned ‘Best European Town of Sport of All Time’. The European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe) is a nonprofit federation based in Brussels which has granted the awards of European Capital, City, Community and Town of Sport every year since 2001. These awards are given for a period of one calendar year. La Nucia, already recognised as a ‘European Town of Sport’ in 2013, is up against 34 other towns in countries

such as Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland and Italy. The ACES Europe representatives assessed the work La Nucia has done to promote its sport offering. In addition to visiting the 250,000-square metre Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano, they went to see the Auditori, the Centre Cultural de la Mediterrania, the Parque de Aventura, the Red de Senderos and the Centro Educativo Medioambiental del Captivador. La Nucia has become a benchmark municipality for healthy living, especially amongst children – with 83 per cent of its school students practising at least one type of sport. The national average is 65 per cent.

General Secretary of ACES Europe Hugo Alonso praised La Nucia for its vision in linking sport with health and continued to say that “investing in sport is investing in health – one euro invested in sport saves 15 euros in healthcare costs.” The General Secretary also commended La Nucia for recognising sport as an economic engine of society and continued to say that “today 3 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product of the European Union is generated through sport and 3.5 per cent of employment is also generated through sport in Europe.” The municipality will find out whether it has won ‘Best European Town of Sport of All Time’ in the new year.

Montgo rescue All under control FIREFIGHTERS rescued a Dutch hiker from the Montgoby helicopter last weekend. The 57-year-old man was out with friends when he fell on the Les Planes path. He was airlifted to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud and is thought to have fractured one of his ankles.

FIREFIGHTERS rushed to control a fire at Hotel Magic Cristal Park in Benidorm earlier this week. The fire started in the kitchen at around 1.30am on Monday morning but was soon extinguished – nobody was hurt nor did the hotel need to be evacuated.

Lowest of the low Our flat at Edificio Sepulveda in Albir was burgled last Sunday. They took two safes which contained mainly sentimental items but particularly WW2 medals that my wife’s late father was presented including some from the Arctic Convoy with inscriptions from the appreciative Russians. Sunday was, Remembrance Sunday, of all days. My wife has also lost some Tiffany and golden jewellery items not pictured as well as a few old, handed down watches. But it is the irreplaceable items like our daughter’s first tooth, in the photo with the metal foil that we have treasured for 24 years and her dad’s hard earned medals for valour, that bring out the emotions. We are offering a 2000 euro reward to anyone who helps us find the perpetrators. The robbery occurred between noon and 1pm (Sunday ). So if you see or hear of anyone selling items like these then please call 634 198 618 and claim your reward once we get them.

Forest fire threatens houses

TWO HELICOPTERS and two fire brigades worked to put out a forest fire that broke out in Calpe earlier this week. The emergency services were called out to the wooded area near the Maryvilla urbanisation and Morro de Toix at around 11.40am on Monday. As the fire burned near houses, two helicopters were automatically dispatched whilst fire brigades from Benissa and the Marina Baixa worked at ground level to extinguish the flames. Thanks to the speed at which the forest fire was controlled, it was not necessary to evict any residents in the area.

In memory of Jessica MUNICIPALITIES in the Marina Alta and the Marina Baixa gathered in memory of Jessica Bravo Cutillas, the 28-year-old Spanish mother who was shot dead by her ex-partner in front of their son in Elda last week. Jessica had collected the three-yearold boy from school and was putting him into her car, at which point her ex-partner approached her, opened the door and fired two shots without saying a word. She managed to get out of the vehicle and run but he followed her down the street and shot her three more times, twice while she was lying on the ground. According to a number of parents who watched the events unfold, the boy, who had witnessed the entire incident, also fled and ran into the school screaming and crying. The aggressor then jumped into Jessica’s car and made to drive away but after about fifty meters, as he drove along the pavement to avoid traffic he crashed the car between trees and the school fence at which point he turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the mouth. Jessica spent 24 hours in Elda Hospital’s intensive care unit in a coma before passing away the next day. Three years ago, she lodged a formal

OLIVIA MAYOR David Gonzalez finally met with the Generalitat Valenciana and the Ministry of Health this week to sign over a plot of land designated for the new health centre. Mayor Gonzalez blamed the delay on the Ministry and said Oliva council has been waiting since 2005 for the project to progress.

He was due to appear in court the day after the shooting for a fast-track trial after insulting her, demanding that she hand over their son and threatening to kill her, witnesses said later. A day before the shooting Jessyca complained to the police that he had attempted to contact her twice through

intermediaries. Although initially detained, he was later released and killed her the next day. 44 women have now lost their lives in domestic violence cases in Spain this year, five of them in the Valencian Community. Minute silences were held in memory of Jessica in Javea and Finestrat (pictured). The mayors of the respective municipalities appealed to society to get involved in the fight to eradicate domestic violence and denounced any form of attack against women.

The plot signed over covers 4,000 square metres, perfect for the new health centre which will span 1,800 square metres - plus access and parking. The Ministry will perform a series of technical tests and report back to the council, who will then draft plans ready for the project to go out to tender in 2018.

Cultural discovery

TWO NEW CAVE PAINTINGS have been found in Pego’s Barranc de la Canal. The works of art were discovered not far from where three residents first found engravings last year. The paintings date back to the 6th millennium BC and Professor of History at the University of Alicante Virginia Barciela said that the first of the findings shows a kneeling hunter armed with a bow and two arrows, while the second

of the findings shows a goat with a large head and horns. The discoveries have been reported to Patrimonio to be included in the list of Bienes de Interes Cultural (BIC). Pego’s Councillor of Culture Laura Castella said that the findings are “something extraordinary for Pego” and that it is hoped more cave painting are discovered “because with each of them, Pego is culturally enriched a little more.”

Hunt them down

RESIDENTS in the Vall de Gallinera have demanded that the council does more to restrict hunting in the area, with “stricter measures and more control.” They say hunters are out almost every weekend without prior planning/ warning. The hunters stop walkers using designated hiking paths and cause a nuisance to residents, trespassing on private property.

Man arrested for corruption of minors A 44-YEAR-OLD Spanish man was arrested in Finestrat charged with the corruption of minors. The investigation was handled by EMUME – an Alicante Guardia Civil team established to investigate cases involving young females – who had received a report concerning a 17-year-old girl working as a prostitute. The report, which came from the girl’s mother, told of how the minor was soliciting from a rented room in an apartment near Benidorm. The team learnt that the girl had approached the accused - the landlord of the apartment - and pretended to be of legal age to rent a room. A short time later, when the landlord found out what she was doing in the room and her age, rather than notify the authorities he decided to take advantage of the situation, blackmailing her into paying him a percentage of her earnings to keep quiet.

The girl worked for up to 12 hours a day and some days she was left with only €10, paying the rest to the landlord. Officers entered the property last week and after

checking there were no more minors being exploited, proceeded to arrest the accused. He has since been released on bail and will appear in court in Benidorm shortly.

If you’re a resident, register! TEULADA-MORAIRA is encouraging its citizens to register on the Padron as resident figures have dropped by over 4,000 since 2010. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the municipality closed 2016 with 10,654 officially registered residents. In 2010 there were 14,778. Aside from being needed for many personal administrative and bureaucratic processes, the more

people that are registered on the Padron, the more funds Teulada-Moraira will have to maintain and improve public services - the Government of Spain allocates funds to each individual municipality based on the number of officially registered residents showing on the Padron. Teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares explained that the drop in resident figures has amounted to a municipal loss of €730,649 over the past seven years.

The ride - one of 38 put up next to the bullring for the fiestas – experienced a mechanical failure in the first hour of the fairground opening last Saturday. The children were rescued - all unharmed - and the attraction was up and running again the next day after being signed off as safe by municipal engineers.

Local mayor hits back at opposing politicians

JAVEA MAYOR Jose Chulvi released a statement this week to address the recent criticism directed at him by opposing politicians at Javea Council. Mayor Chulvi was publicly accused by the group of neglecting Javea.

He thanked his opposition for giving him the chance to provide deeper insight into what he does for the town: “’Neglecting Javea’ for them must mean, every week of the year from 2011 until today, personally attending to the concerns of citizens, organizations and associations from our town. This work is carried out in my office but also, as many of you know, by attending the place where I am called to, whether it be for official acts, games, work visits, sports and cultural events, etc. “’Neglecting Javea’ must be not to have missed a single day in ten years of attendance at a plenary session of the Council, whether as mayor or councillor or in the opposition. Never, I repeat, have I ever missed a plenary session (often giving up personal travel or events that I would have liked to attend) unfortunately others cannot say the same.

SMILING FOR THE CAMERA: Mayor Chulvi

“’Neglecting Javea’ must have been achieved thanks to my intense workload in Valencia and Alicante when our claim for the long overdue municipal pool was finally recognised, unblocking the Triana Bridge project to have it finally repaired, the subsidy for the renovations of the Avenida de Ultramar, the roundabouts at Tosalet and the Arenal, the many subsidies we receive for Social Services, the Environment, Tourism, etc which previously were never received... and many more things. “’Neglecting Javea’ should be to go to the vast majority of events of all kinds which are held in our town giving them institutional and personal support, whereas those who now want to sow discord usually only attend during the week before the elections. “’Neglecting Javea’ should mean working every day to create a better town and demonstrate it with tangible results - urban improvements and upgrades in all the population centres, the renovation of street lighting, the new auditorium whose construction we are about to begin, the new general plan, the beginning of the works

for the cover at the soccer field, quality cultural programming throughout the year, support for those who need it most, collaboration with the associations of businessmen and residents, support for sustainability with facts and not just with words, reduction of the municipal debt from €42 million to €7.5 million (this will be almost zero by the end of this current administration), new parking areas, initiating an international tender to develop the coastal path, comprehensive fire-fighting plan, health service clinic on the Arenal during the summer, road asphalting plan... in short, everything you can see happening every day on the street. Of course there is still a lot to do, but I don’t think that anyone can doubt the importance I give to my commitment to Javea to continue working together, as we have done so far. Even better and more achievements are possible thanks to the better position we have to claim subsidies from the regional government of the Generalitat and the Alicante Diputacion. If ‘Neglecting Javea’ is this ... well, there you have it.

Colombian rumbled over ‘smash n’ grab’ robbery

POLICE arrested a 21year-old Colombian man accused of committing a ‘smash n’ grab’ robbery at the ‘Montenegro’ jewellery store in Denia last week. At around 5.00am last Wednesday, the accused smashed one of the stores’ windows with a manhole cover and stole a variety of watches through the hole in the glass. The alarm sounded and neighbours were quick to notify the police and the owners of the store. The owners of the store – situated on the

corner of Calle Marques de Campo and Calle Carlos Senti - provided the police with CCTV recordings and the store remained closed until Wednesday afternoon when the window was repaired. The thief was easily identified from the CCTV recording due to his extensive criminal record and police arrested him a few days later. Some of the stolen watches were recovered and returned to the store. The accused also been linked to an attempted carjacking that same night.

Auditorium plans finally in place JAVEA MAYOR JOSE CHULVI took to social media to announce that the construction of the long-awaited auditorium/ theatre will begin this month. Mayor Chulvi posted on Facebook last Saturday, advising friends and followers that he had signed the contract with the head of the construction company the day before, calling the project “one of the most emblematic infrastructure projects of recent years.” He added: “At the signing was Councillor of Culture - Quico Moragues and the person in charge of contracting

- Marta Banuls, both of whom I wish to thank and recognise for their work together with Councillor of Works Paco Torres.” The auditorium/ theatre is expected to be ready in spring 2019 and will have capacity for 524 people. Its 17m x 11m stage will play host to a variety of concerts, shows and large-scale theatre performaces. Mayor Chulvi said: “Many have promised this in the past, but we will do it and this historic request by the people of Javea will soon become a reality. We keep on working!”

A tram for everyone by Tahnee Wright FERROCARRILS DE LA GENERALITAT VALENCIANA (FGV) recently commissioned the construction of six new tram cars for Line 9 between Denia and Benidorm. The new cars - costing €43 million in total - are being built by Stadler in Albuixech, Valencia and will be hybrid – able to operate on diesel or electric. FGV has developed a new ‘Plan de Accesibilidad Universal’ (Universal Acces-

sibility Plan) and aims to promote independent travel – a tram for everyone: even for those with limited mobility. In compliance with the Royal Decree 1544/2007 (in force in the Valencia Community since 2009), FGV is striving to guarantee passengers with varying degrees of mobility the possibility of travelling autonomously by tram and is adapting its cars, infrastructure and information system. Those with limited mobility will be able to board the tram using any of the doors as the new cars will adjust to the

height of the platform. There will be stop buttons throughout the cars, especially accessible in areas designated for wheelchairs and next to seats designed for those with limited mobility. Stop requests will be confirmed both over the tannoy and on scrolling passenger information screens. Seats designed for those with limited mobility will be a different colour to allow easy identification and the floors of the new cars will be anti-reflective and non-slip. The new tram cars will enter service in 2019

24 feb - 2 march 2017 A SIGN OF SUPREMACY: Casa Arnauda’s watchtower makes it one of the tallest buildings in the town

A taste of luxury in Javea’s old town

ENTREPRENEURS from Belgium have purchased one of Javea old town’s most palatial homes with the intention of turning it into a luxury hotel. ‘Casa Arnauda’ was built in the 1850s and belonged to a wealthy, upper-class family who found their fortune in the raisin industry. The Gothic style property’s fanciest feature is its sizeable watchtower – a sign of supremacy that makes it one of the tallest buildings in the town, surpassed only by the Sant Bertomeu Church. From the watchtower, the family would survey ships coming and going, exporting raisins to Europe and the Americas.

Casa Arnauda - declared a “Bien de Relevancia Local” (Site of Local Relevance) - has been empty for many decades. The ground floor was once owned by CAM (now Banco Sabadell) but the Belgian entrepreneurs are said to have purchased the property in its entirety for an undisclosed amount – despite the fact it was not on the market. They have already made enquiries with Javea’s Department of Urban Planning but as of yet, no licenses have been granted. As a protected property, the purchasers can restore its exterior but not alter it. Once complete, Casa Arnauda will be the first luxury hotel in Javea’s old town.

Asbestos stalls street works

The discovery of asbestos pipes has caused the planned works on Denia’s calle Sadunga to come to a halt. Works were supposed to start last month but the pipes were found when testing was carried out.

The asbestos pipes will need to be removed and disposed of according to public health guidelines. This will increase the overall cost of the project, which is currently being deliberated at the Town Hall.

tial town built on a one-way road system with narrow streets and even narrower pavements. The Neighbourhood Board discussed how, with cars parking on one side of the road, traffic going through the town does so within a metre of doorways. It looked at the presence of children in the streets as they make their way to and

from school, the presence and sports and leisure activities, cyclist and runners as well as the town’s popular weekend markets that increase the presence of pedestrians in the streets. Four per cent of Spain’s glass recycled in Benidorm Ecovidrio, the not-for-profit organisation behind the initiative, presented Benidorm’s Councillor of Environment Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate with the Iglu verde award. The councillor thanked “the involvement of the hospitality sector, which generated more than 50 per cent of the recycled glass.” He continued: “The 1,204 tonnes of glass recycled in Benidorm has accounted for more than four per cent of the total glass recycled nationally in the 80 Spanish municipalities that have participated in this initiative.” The igloo shaped award is made to imitate the recycling ‘igloos’ themselves. 130 new igloos were delivered to the city this year to adapt to the needs of local businesses and the collection frequency was also increased.

2016 closed with a total of 3,686,860 kilograms of recycled glass in Benidorm, which gives an average of 55.3 kilos per inhabitant, well above the Spanish national average.

BENIDORM recycled 1,204 tonnes of glass this summer and has received the ‘Iglu verde’ award for its commitment to the environment. A total of 370 bars and restaurants participated together with residents in this year’s initiative, which saw a 3 per cent increase on glass recycled in the same period in 2016. But just how heavy is 1,204 tonnes? • It’s about one-twentieth as heavy as The Statue of Liberty • It’s about 11 and a half times as heavy as a blue whale • It’s about 750 times as heavy as a car • It’s about 150 times as heavy as an elephant • It’s about 17 times as heavy as the Space Shuttle

The way I see it…

by

Harvey Mann The opinions published in Harvey’s weekly column are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or newspaper sponsors.

I’m getting bloody well fed up, day after day by the mainly so-called actresses, who have had little publicity lately, in the entertainment world, also women in business, politics, even women from normal walks of life, that have all of a sudden remembered that they were raped, or propositioned years ago. Now let me explain myself, I’m not a misogynist in any way, but it seems that Harvey “Willie Wonka” Weinstein who by all the evidence is a very dirty piece of work, has opened up the flood gates for this barrage of stories from women who claim that they have undergone historic assaults in years previously. Is it me, or are many of these women who are now making accusations trying to prove something? Have they had a bad relationship with their partners, husbands, or someone that they took a fancy to in the office or in the pub and were spurned by the man

in question. Many years ago, when I travelled on the underground trains in London, as the train jolted and I accidently brushed up against a female, she did not slap me round my face, as I apologised, nor did she appear in the papers or on TV several years later claiming that I touched her up. Or the time I called out of my open window from my car, “excuse me madam am I going the right way to so, and so”. She did not call back saying, you’re going the right way for a clip round the ear. Has the world gone mad, or have women decided in many cases that they are rightly fed up with men ogling them or smiling at them. Oh how I long for the good old days when men used to doff their hats smile at a woman and say good morning madam, these days if you did that, you would get an earful of expletives from a girl who got so drunk the night before she ended up in bed with some you young oik

who looked like a fire extinguisher. Then again in my research for this column, I have discovered young ladies of today like to take the lead, they stand in groups eyeing up the men, talking amongst themselves of the possibilities of the man’s libido? Or size? Does he have a six pack? Sometimes that is when some of the young ladies of today are still sober enough to stand, or to take their clothes off. Hang on! Now it’s the men’s turn, young men are now coming forward telling how they were assaulted or propositioned by other men, take the latest accusation against Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman both brilliant actors, Spacy was known as having the Rock Hudson syndrome, the handsome actor who died of aids, who went cruising around Hollywood at night picking up men, sometimes as many as six at a time. And now Westminster has been rocked

What a load of rubbish, what has the world come too, next someone will get arrested for hugging his son, or kissing his daughter on the cheek. So, when will all this historic nonsense stop? George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway had much in common with my father, Patrick. The three fought in the same war in the frontlines and in the case of the latter were good friends. So, I suppose all three were qualified to comment on conflicts that occur between men. The American war correspondent held the view that “No one man nor group of men incapable of fighting or exempt from fighting should in any way be given the power to put this country or any country into war.” It is difficult to disagree with fellow Republican the English journalist George Orwell. “Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac. One of the most horrible features of war is that all the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.” Such were my thoughts when my wife and I spent Remembrance Sunday in Albacete. In this lovely Spanish city was situated the headquarters of the International Brigades during Spain’s Civil War. My Irish-American father fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The attrition rate was high; of 2,800 Americans 681 lost their lives. The band of brothers comment was; “They gave me a gun and 100 bullets and sent me to fight.” Used as shock troops the Brigade suffered a 22.5% loss. During the Battle of Jarama, February 27, 1937, the unit lost two-thirds of its strength. Of the 600 men who fought hand-to-hand to secure Suicide Hill only 160 survived. Today, the Legions’ Albacete headquarters has gone but here and there are the places familiar to

my father. The staff at Historico Archivo was friendly and fascinated by father’s letters, photos, documents. The mementos included a postcard to my mother from the firebrand premier Dolores Ibarruri. Had Spain fallen to the Stalin-backed Republicans no doubt it would be today free and on a par with other post-Soviet countries. Hence my own thoughts They´re All Together Now And now they’re all together, Their differences are gone,

No longer does it matter, If they lost or if they won; Such foolishness is easy led, They believed when they had read, The lies of wicked men. They now share soil, for which they fought, Once foes now sleep in peace, I hope they’re as they were to me, Before these lambs to fleece, Were sent to meet their youthful end, Once enemies but now they’re friends, They’re all together now.

A bit of revision Those of you who have been following this series will have noticed that, bit by bit, we have covered the changes that are made to a Spanish verb depending on who is controlling the action of that verb; that is whether “I” do something, or “you”, or “we” or “they”, and so on. Just to put all of this into some kind of perspective, I would like to point out three things. Firstly we have been looking exclusively at the present tense, we are not yet talking about the past or future, although we can express the future with our forms expressing intention: voy a, (I’m going to) vas a, (you’re going to) va a (he or she is going to) vamos a (we are going to) van a (they are going to) combining them with an infinitive verb as we have already seen. Secondly, we have not yet looked in any detail at the exact patterns involved in changing all these verbs. These are not difficult as such, but

they take a bit of time and effort to explain properly. However, I believe it is more important to start you off understanding the basic principles of why these changes take place and to give you some useable examples to be going on with in the real world. Thirdly, those of you who know a little bit more grammar will have noticed that I have omitted one of the present tense forms, that is the plural “you” form, otherwise known as the second person plural. Again, this obviously comes

into play once these things are studied in depth, but as this form does not exist in the English language, at this stage of learning it can create more difficulties than it solves and the fact is that we can get an awful long way in communicating without using it at all. So, before we move on at all to anything new, let’s play around a bit with what we’ve already got. We haven’t done much translation for a while, so here’s a little homework task, the answers to which will appear in next week’s issue. As usual I may throw the odd word in that hasn’t appeared in an article before, but I feel you should cope with this either by using guesswork or, I find that using a dictionary can be extremely helpful! Also, If you would like to e-mail your answers to me you can do so at janejcronin@gmail.com

A Lapse in Time by

Colin Bird The opinions published in Colin’s weekly column are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or newspaper sponsors.

Every framed print or painting on display in our house depicts a time in our lives that brings back fond memories. None of the pictures are of high monetary value, but from an emotional point of view, each and every one is a treasure. One or two represent gifts from close friends here in Spain, whilst there are depictions from our individual past lives and many more since our time together. In particular we have a number that were painted by a Bermudian artist friend and are representations of scenes from those beautiful islands, where the Princess and I first met. At this time of year, I take a nostalgic look at the collection of pantomime posters that decorate one side of the stair well – eighteen in all – each with its own mini catalogue of stories to tell. On the other side a collection of prints and sketches of a particular area in Cornwall where I spent two happy years of my life, that include a framed facsimile of a Great Western Railway poster for the town of Looe where I lived. A portrait in pastels of my wife executed by my best friend, and a very special painting by my late Dad of Dunster village in Somerset, are just two of the other reminders of our past lives. But in one of our guest bedrooms, there hangs a tiny unprepossessing pencil drawing of a thatched cottage that has a special significance. Unsigned by the artist, but bearing the legend ‘Wickhambrook 27/6/53’ in one corner.

It was spotted in a junk shop by a friend some years ago, and he immediately recognised it as the house where we had lived since 1976, and he purchased the drawing for a pound. The 27th June 1953 was a Saturday, I checked, and was the day an unknown artist decided to sketch a pretty little cottage known then as ‘Grimwoods’. The fascination for me is not so much what the drawing portrays, but what it does not, because as the artist applied pencil to paper, a skinny

seven year boy was probably playing in the back garden on a council estate in Berkshire; artist and boy totally oblivious of the others’ existence. And yet many years later the boy and his wife would be the owners of that same house and spend three happy decades of their lives there. So as I look at the picture, I also think of myself and the invisible silver cord that even then linked me and that unknown Suffolk artist. If walls could only speak, people sometimes say. Ours do. In volumes.

Would you like to save your loved ones that big inheritance tax bill?

Sam

IHT (Inheritance Tax) planning is certainly not as simple in Spain as the UK, by but there are solutions if you get the right Kelly advice.

Managing Partner Chorus Financial

A typical scenario here in Spain is that of my clients, a husband and wife, who have been retired here in Spain for 12 years, and own a property here. They also have 2 investment properties in the UK and savings and investments totalling approximately £300k. When they both pass away, they want to leave their entire estate to their two grown up children, who both live in the UK. Their Worldwide assets will be subject to UK IHT, as they are seen as UK domiciled, and their Spanish based assets will also be subject to Spanish IHT (although with the double tax agreement, they can claim relief on this part of their UK bill). As a couple, the first £650k will be free of UK inheritance tax. As their primary residence is not in the UK, they will not benefit from any primary residence tax relief in terms of their UK properties. The total value of their 3 properties will use up all their £650k UK tax free relief.

This means that their savings and investments of £300,000 will be fully subject to UK IHT at 40%, which will leave a bill of approximately £120,000, potentially more if they hold some of these savings or investments in a Spanish bank or institution. The good news is, with proper planning, we can save their beneficiaries this entire £120,000 bill. The key to Spanish IHT planning is that to avoid Spanish IHT both the beneficiary and the asset must be outside Spain. Once you’ve ticked this off, your remaining issue is the UK IHT allowance. This is where trust planning comes into play. What we were able to do with this couple is to place their savings and investments into a Spanish compliant investment bond, a bond recognised by the Spanish tax authorities, but crucially based outside Spain, and then move this bond into a trust for their children. In terms of the Spanish bond, this is a tax efficient plan designed for Spanish residents, which allows my clients, cautious investors, to target investment returns of around 4-5% per year. Despite being in trust, they can still make regular withdrawals to supplement their pension incomes, pay for holidays, a new car etc. When they both pass away, the trust element will mean the

proceeds of their investment bond will be paid in full to their children without being subject to Spanish or UK IHT, saving that £120,000 IHT bill. Even more reassuring for my clients was the fact that the institution I recommended for this solution is a FTSE 100 company with nearly 20 million clients Worldwide. Whether you’re looking to improve the returns on your savings or investments, explore your pension options, or come up with robust IHT planning solutions, a free consultation with Chorus is the best place to start. Please call me direct on 664 398 702 or email s.kelly@chorusfinancial for more information.

When can I sell assets from my late husband’s estate? Q:

I am a British citizen and both my husband and I have owned a property in a urbanisation in Denia. My husband died intestate in Britain 5 years ago. I want to ask you about the legal steps to carry out to have the property in my name and in my daughter’s one, and what are the tax duties on the inheritance. We also hold a bank account in Javea. Should I include these assets in my husband’s inheritance? When can I sell the house and what are the taxes to be paid on the sale?

A:

When somebody dies without making a will and his heirs want to have all the deceased’s possessions in their names, a document that states who the heirs are is required. In your case, and bearing in mind that you are British, a Grant of Probate from the Probate Registry is needed to prove who have the right to succeed. To obtain this document, you must fill in a form in which you have to give details about the deceased, the persons with right to inherit – in your case, your daughter and you – and a list of the deceased’s estate.

You also have to bring forward your husband’s death certificate and, if any, a will or any document in which the deceased had expressed the way of distribution of his estate. After receiving all the documents, the Probate Registry Office will call you for an informal interview to check all the details and documents provided. After this point, if everything is alright, the Probate Office will issue the Grant. Before going to the Notary Office in Spain to get the Inheritance Title Deed (Escritura de aceptación de herencia), you have to collect the following documents: • The Grant of Probate. • Your husband’s death certificate. • A certificate of Last Wills issued by the Spanish Ministry of Justice which certifies that no will has been made. • The title deed by which your husband and you bought the house. • In case you had a bank account, a certificate from your bank, stating the amount of money deposited in it at your husband’s death is also required. You have to take into account that all documents in English should be translated into Spanish by a legal translator and must have the Hague Convention apostille attached.

Regarding the taxes to be paid on the inheritance, the Spanish Inheritance Tax Act states that they are to be paid within 6 months from the death. So, you have to speed up the obtaining of your documents to get your new title deed before this date. However, if you think you could not get all the papers in six months, you can ask the Tax Office for a deferment of the term – up till eight months. You also have to pay “plusvalía”, which is a local tax to be paid in the town hall where the property is located, levied on the increase in the value of the land between the date you and your husband purchased the house and the date when you sign the Inheritance Title Deed. Once all the above mentioned steps have been carried out, the new title deed must be submitted to the Land Registry Office to be registered. When the registration is completed you can, then, proceed to sell the house. The seller must pay capital gains tax, but in your case, and according to the Spanish Income Tax Act, you will be exempt from paying it because your husband died 5 year ago . After 5 years taxes are no longer paid since because this is the limit that the tax office has to claim them. For more information contact us without commitment blancoabogados@icaalmeria.es

legal My partner and I have been together for decades, Q but we are not married. What are our rights with regards to inheritance and inheritance tax?

by

IGNACIO PELLICER MOLLĂ & PEDRO HEREDIA ORTIZ

LAWYERS

A

If a couple are not married they have no claim to inherit any share of their partner’s assets. In addition, inheritance tax will be higher between couples who are not married than their married counterparts. In the first instance the most important aspect is to draw up and sign a will, carefully dividing your assets in the manner that you wish to. Please remember to state in your will the European legislation that allows you more or even free disposal of you assets. Otherwise the Spanish law will apply.

If you have any further questions about this or any other legal matter, please do not hesitate to contact us; we have a team of experts standing by to assist you in any way we can. Call 965 480 737 or email info@pellicerheredia.com Videos at www.pellicerheredia.com

British Ambassador Simon Manley attends Remembrance Service in Madrid THE BRITISH Ambassador in Spain, Simon Manley, attended and read a lesson at the Service of Remembrance at St George’s Anglican Church in Madrid. The Ambassador, who attends this service every year, was joined by diplomatic colleagues from across the Commonwealth, EU and other countries, as well as serving members of UK armed forces based in Spain, as part of NATO operations or bilaterally. In addition, a number of British consular teams also attended Remembrance Day events across Spain. Simon Manley said: “Remembrance Day is a special moment for us all to remember those who serve, and have served, to keep us safe and free. I will remember the members of my own family who served: my father in the Eighth Army in North Africa and Italy, my maternal grandfather with the RAF in Sri Lanka, and my paternal grandfather with the RFC in France. And it’s absolutely right, in these turbulent times, to underline that the United Kingdom’s commitment to Europe’s security remains absolute.”

Remembrance on the Costa Blanca ACROSS the northern Costa Blanca, the Church of England clergy of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy conducted 10 services of remembrance, to mark November 11, Armistice Day. Four of these services of remembrance were with, or on behalf of the Royal British Legion and other ex-services charities. These charities work tirelessly, providing financial, social and emotional support to ex-servicemen, their families and dependants. The services, from Gandia to el Campello, took place both last Saturday and on Remembrance Sunday. The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir performed at the service in Moraira, sponsored by the town hall; and the Lady Elizabeth School Choir performed once again at the Sunday afternoon service in the Javea Fisherman’s church.

Fr Marcus, senior chaplain with representatives of the British Legion, the town council and others at the service in Calpe.

Both choirs were conducted by Claire Harkness Post. Wreaths were laid by representatives of the various charities and service organisations and all services followed the same and familiar format used

in acts of remembrance around the world. People who themselves have served led the act of remembrance and read the Kohima Epitaph, which references the fighting on the India/Burma border, where forces from

across the Commonwealth began the chain of events that was to force back enemy forces and turn the direction of the conflict in that part of the world during the Second World War.

Jack Reacher

The Midnight Line by Lee Child

JACK REACHER takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It’s tiny. It’s a woman cadet’s graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher’s a West Pointer too, and he knows what she went through to get it. Reacher tracks the ring back to its owner, step by step, down a criminal trail leading west. Like Big Foot come out of the forest, he arrives in the deserted wilds of Wyoming. All he wants is to find the woman. If she’s OK, he’ll walk away. If she’s not ...he’ll stop at nothing. He’s still shaken by the recent

horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don’t get in his way. Readers have been following the nail-biting exploits of Jack Reacher since he first loped into town in Killing Floor in 1997, a striking figure standing at 6ft5 all dirty-blond hair, with a chip on his shoulder and a lethal ability. His creator Lee Child lays claim to the fact that every second somewhere in the world somebody buys one of his novels. He starts every new novel on the same date, the 1 September, and has managed to keep fans coming back for more every time, he says of thriller-writing “It’s the only real genre and all the other stuff has grown on the side of it like barnacles.”

Puzzles Code Breaker

Karma will deal with things now, and your instincts were right all along! This intuitive energy has solved a problem and rewarded you by allowing you to see just how special you are; and exactly how those gifts could now be put to good use. Remember that for you this is the start, and knowing where this could take you will open doors!

Word Pyramid

5

Mercury and Mars vie, but good fortune is a blessing and Mars brings solution and strength through endeavour and quick thinking. If you feel that someone needs a shoulder to cry on then remember that you were strong enough to turn things around; but that others will maybe have to learn their lesson the hardest possible way.

WORD fit

Using just logic, can you make all the words fit correctly into the grid?

The New Moon arrives this week, closely followed by the entry of the Sun. You will feel the rebirth and ready to take on anything that comes your way! With such a tender and emotive New Moon you couldn’t wish for a better time to take a step in a different direction, as you bring in the new, and dump the old unnecessary ties!

Enjoy all new and wonderful experiences this week, but whatever you do keep your ear to the ground as some help is on the way for you! Know when to stand your ground, and remember that you have a natural right to see things going your way....... and it’s about time for it too. Dig up all that hidden emotion, while you are at it, as well!

E

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 11 represents H and 18 represents Z. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

It’s a done deal, but nothing is written in stone. What you need now is to take some time to get your head together whilst taking a break that allows you to see things from a different angle. Recent pressures have weighed heavily on your conscious but it is time to put everything in order and tell others that you are not to be messed with!

Time to call in a favour, as you need the boost that will see you truly getting what you deserve right now. With options exercised and your needs met, it is time to turn a corner and there will be no going back this time. Set your sights and aim high now, because waiting around for something to happen is not your chosen way of operating.

T

There is 1x9 letter word and 150 others! Make as many 3 or more letter words as you can using any letter combination just once and you must use the central letter in every word!

The Cosmos is geared up to pass on some very positive energies right now. As you best know, your way ahead is paved with open doors and opportunities now that you have started believing in yourself. Both Mars and Pluto have conflict in the midweek squaring that sees them fighting your corner, but giving you a run for your money!

Mars illuminates the tenth house of work and commerce this week, and it seems as if you have a foot in the door; which could prove to be a lifeline for you. With Mars in Libra, this is the right time to take a risk that will prove to be the icing on your cake, as your career is in the spotlight and Mars departs, for two years, early December.

I

N

Word Wheel

You have such little time to make a mighty decision that will affect others and change your modus operandi. Taking into account current pressures you are entitled to stall for time and yet enabled to hear both sides of the matter before you make a judgment. Mars squares with Pluto, and balance will restore if you play it by ear.

Work sees you taking some new responsibilities, and this will allow you to show others just what you are capable of if you are left to your own devices. Part of your charm is your adaptability and your foresight, and if this can win you some brownie points then you should take centre stage. After all it is where you deserve to be now.

O

Start at a letter and spell out a 10-letter word by moving to adjacent letters. Each letter will be used at least once, but no letter will be used twice in a row.

Sudden good fortune of a financial nature comes your way this week, courtesy of the Venus trine with Pluto. This trine has a double connotation, which connects with both mystical beauty and innermost interpretation to arouse your innermost spiritual energies. Many around you are in need right now, but they will not be forgotten!

Beware of what may be behind a recent request, and be unafraid that in this instance you may not be the best person to help. Mercury sextiles Mars and you may find that you are kept busy nearer to home, as somebody is about to move the goalposts to keep you interested in just what it is they feel that they can really offer you right now.

Mystical Postbag Kenny, I am looking to change my life around. I have brought up my family as a single parent, after their father died, and now I want to take Holy Orders and join a Convent. My children think that this means I am leaving them, but I have the calling. I know I have to do this, but I can't bear it when they get upset with me. Kristin O. Kristin, you are thinking of yourself for a change and that's not wrong. This is your time and if you need to be true to yourself then you

have to do what it is you feel is right. I think this is not an admission to a closed order, but one that will use your significant skills. I know that you can enter as a Noviciate and that will mean a year or so in contemplation before finalising your vows. Take this time, be sure, but do tell your family that you will never stop loving them. Be you, be sure.... give it a try. Things will work out, and may God bless you!

For Birthday Celebrants Much fulfilment is out there, and fate and destiny will both work for you rather than against you, if you just let them in. Believe, and above all you will be counting your blessings in the astrological year ahead!

Make A Smile – Christmas Bag Appeal

MAKE A SMILE recently launched its popular Christmas Bag Appeal. It has been a tumultuous year for the youngsters in the failed Emaus group. In June, the group was taken over by the new company ¨Salud y Comunidad¨who provide the children with the necessary basics including clothing, food and services. This is great as the children have been able to stay in their ¨family groups¨and the majority of the carers have kept their jobs, however basic means just that! This year´s Christmas Bag Appeal is as necessary as ever to give the youngsters a gift - new pyjamas, personal hygiene products, school supplies and of course some treats. So once again, Make A Smile asks you to fill a bag with some goodies and drop it off at one of the many drop off points below: The appeal will run up to Friday January 5 for Three Kings Day and any goodies left over will be used for birthday presents during the year. Charity News

Seeking Sponsors! Many of you will know about the support Javea-based charity Grant a Wish gives to local people and organisations. We’re a charity that always likes to say ‘yes’ to any individual or cause whom we can help – usually with practical things such as food, toiletries, kitchen supplies or, in the case of the orphanage we support, treats, outings and presents. But, and it’s a big but, our resources are finite. We raise funds through our chic boutique in Javea (if you haven’t been yet do come and see the range of goodies we have in store) and we hold regular fun-filled fund raising events, but we need more! We are turning to businesses throughout the Marina Alta for support. Could you, or the owner or manager of a business you work with, provide either the goods, or sponsor the goods, that we deliver every week to the men’s shelter in Gandia? Or could you fund an occasional

outing to a pizza restaurant or treats for the children in the el Verger orphanage? Perhaps you could sponsor a disabled child in our new riding project? The more sponsors we get the more deserving causes we can support. The sums don’t need to be huge. For example, 20 litres of full fat UHT milk, which is what we normally deliver to the men’s shelter each week, works out at just €12. Could you sponsor this? For a month? For six months? At a higher end of the spectrum, we’re looking for 240 euros a week to take six disabled children to learn to ride. You can either sponsor a week or a month, or sponsor a rider for 80 euros a month. If you’d like to find out more, or help in any way, please contact jody@wegrantawish.com

Beauty Tips

Reduce skin creases by changing your pillowcase Choose a pillowcase that is soft and silky instead of coarser fabrics to decrease friction and skin compression that leaves you with extra lines in the

morning. If you sleep on your side, try switching sides occasionally or sleeping on your back, so your face doesn’t wrinkle over time from pressure

in certain areas. But, don’t stress about this… because ultimately, you want to be comfortable because highquality sleep is essential for natural beauty.

Whiten yellow nails That red polish may look great when it’s on, but the yellow tint it leaves on your nails looks anything but. 1. Bleach nails in a solution of 1 tablespoon of 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide mixed with 2 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda in a small plastic bowl. 2. Use a cotton swab to press some of the mixture (it should achieve a paste-like consistency) firmly under the tip of each nail as well as over the top of the nail, covering all the nails on one hand. 3. Allow the mixture to remain in place for about three minutes before rinsing with warm water. 4. Repeat with other hand!

Try this treatment every six to eight weeks. Or, soak your tips in denture cleaner for about five minutes. For a super-speedy fix, use a nailwhitening pencil under your tips for a brighter look.

health

Five ways to stay healthy this winter • destress with exercise or meditation – stress has been shown to make you feel tired

It may be cold outside, but winter needn’t be the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family. Here are five ways to make sure that, even when your body is telling you to hibernate, you can keep healthy and fit, no matter what the weather’s like. Banish winter tiredness Many people feel tired and sluggish during winter. This is due to the lack of sunlight, which disrupts our sleep and waking cycles. Try these tips: • get outdoors in natural daylight as much as possible • get a good night’s sleep – go to bed and wake up at the same time every day

Eat more fruit and veg When it’s cold and dark outside, it can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food. However, it’s important to ensure you still have a healthy diet and include five portions of fruit and veg a day. If you find yourself craving a sugary treat, try a juicy clementine or satsuma instead. Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swede and turnips can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal for the whole family. Explore varieties of fruit and veg that you may not normally eat. Drink more milk You are more likely to get a cold in winter, so make sure your immune system is in tip-top condition. Milk and dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais are great sources of: • protein • vitamins A and B12 • calcium, which helps keep our bones strong Choose semi-skimmed, 1 per cent or

skimmed milk – rather than full-fat – and low-fat plain yoghurts. Try new activities for the whole family Don’t use the cold winter months as an excuse to stay in and lounge around. Instead, get out with the whole family to try out a new activity – maybe ice skating, or taking a bracing winter walk on the beach or through the park. Regular exercise helps control your weight, boost your immune system, and is a good way to break the tension that can build if the family is constantly cooped up inside the house. Have a hearty breakfast Winter is the perfect season for porridge. Eating a warm bowlful on a cold morning isn’t just a delicious way to start your day, it also helps boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre. These foods give you energy and help you feel fuller for longer, stopping the temptation to snack mid-morning. Oats also contain lots of vital vitamins and minerals. Make your porridge with semiskimmed, 1 per cent or skimmed milk, or water, and don’t add sugar or salt. Add a sliced banana, berries or other fruit for extra flavour and to help you hit your 5 A Day target.

Artichoke for a healthy digestion of fats The artichoke (cynara scolymus) is a thistle-like plant with big round flowers that can reach a height of 2 metres. Most of us know the artichoke as a delicious vegetable of which only the heart and the fleshy parts of the petals are eaten. It originated in the Mediterranean area, where it has been known for hundreds of years as a natural aid in the digestion of fatty substances and also as a remedy against flatulence and bloatedness. However, it is not the edible parts of the artichoke that are used as a natural remedy, but its leaves and roots. These contain a bitter substance (Cynarin) that has a stimulating effect on the digestive system and the metabolism, improving the function of the pancreas, gall bladder and liver. A well-functioning fat digestion and a healthy metabolism is essential for wellbeing and health. More than 30% of people suffer from digestive problems with bloating, flatulence, nausea, cramp-like pain and embarrassing stomach rumblings in the stomach. Often this can be attributed to a poor digestion of fats. Artichoke extract improves the bile function. Scientific studies show that already shortly after the ingestion of artichoke extract, a significant rise of bile acid production occurs. The increased quantity of bile acid in the digestive system improves the fat digestion and the above mentioned ailments. Artichoke extract can also specially aid a weight control diet by improving especially the digestion of fatty nutrients. Artichoke extract also has a positive effect on elevated

cholesterol levels. New scientific stud¬ies show that artichoke extract has an inhibiting effect on the cholesterol biosynthesis, reduces blood cholesterol levels and hinders the LDLcholesterol oxidation. Artichoke extract stimulates the production of gastric juices and reduces feelings of nausea, sickness and bloatedness. Tests with concentrated artichoke extract have shown surprisingly good results in the detoxication of the liver as well as in the lowering of cholesterol and lipid levels. Because of its wide range of effects on digestion and cholesterol levels, the artichoke protects the body against strain or damage such as often results from poor eating habits. it is presently believed that the artichoke is an excellent and well tolerated natural aid for relieving excess strain in the digestive process. It is recommended that artichoke extract be taken as a food supplement over a prolonged period or even on a permanent basis.

How to make a birdseed wreath Make clever use out of a Bundt pan by creating a pretty gelatine-birdseed feeder for your feathered friends. MATERIALS • • • • •

3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup warm water 3 tablespoons light corn syrup 1 package unflavoured gelatine 4 cups bird food (such as seeds, peanuts, berries, dried fruits) • Bundt pan or other mould • Non-stick cooking spray

Step 1:

Mix up edible glue Stir the gelatine into the warm water until dissolved. Whisk in the corn syrup and flour. Stir well, until there are no more lumps. It will make a thick gooey paste.

Step 2:

Stir in bird seed Mix the seeds with the paste in a large bowl, using a spatula to stir and fold until all of the seeds are coated and the edible glue is distributed. The mixture will start getting very sticky. Make sure it’s well mixed to keep the wreath from falling apart.

Step 3:

Mould wreath

Spray the Bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray. Using the spatula, press the seed mixture into the Bundt pan. Be sure to press the mixture down firmly until it’s well packed and even. Set the pan aside overnight. The mixture will harden and turn white, and the surface will be firm and dry when it’s ready. Test by pressing gently on the surface,

and allow more setting time if it’s at all soft.

Step 4:

Add finishing touches Once the wreath is hard, gently remove it from the mould by turning it upside down onto a plate. Tie ribbons, garnish with sprigs of greenery or berries, and hang it for the birds to enjoy!

pets

Dog winter survival guide WHEN THE thermometer dips don’t leave your dog outside unattended – most pet dogs spend a lot of time inside and aren’t used to the extreme cold so could develop hypothermia or frostbite. Short-coated breeds, like Greyhounds, Dobermans and Chihuahuas really struggle to cope with the cold so make sure they’ve got a cosy doggy jumper or coat on when they go outside. If your dog starts lifting up their paws, whining or stopping while out on walks it could well be because their feet are too cold, so it’s a good idea to invest in some boots for them to wear.

Trim the hair around your dog’s feet to help prevent ice-balls – these form between the pads and toes of the feet and are really painful. If you walk on salted pavements wash your dog’s paws after a walk because salt and grit can really irritate their footpads. Stay away from frozen ponds or lakes and keep your dog on a lead near frozen water. If they do run on to it, it’s tempting to go after them but it’s really important that you don’t. Most dogs are strong swimmers and are more likely to get themselves out of trouble than you are. Don’t be a fair-weather friend – take your dog out in all weathers where possible but be careful in slippery conditions. If you’re elderly, don’t put yourself at risk, keep your dog at home and spend time playing games

indoors to stop them from getting too bored or frustrated. If your dog is less active during the winter months, don’t forget to cut back a bit on what you feed them. When you’re out walking wear bright/ reflective clothing so you can be seen by motorists during the dark evenings. You can also get some great reflective gear for dogs too. It’s not just people who are tempted to overindulge over Christmas but eating human food can give your dog an upset tummy and turkey bones can choke them. Don’t forget to keep your choccies out of reach too because they’re toxic to dogs.

How to raise a happy guinea pig

GUINEA PIGS can be so much fun but how can you make sure that they’re enjoying themselves too? As well as always ensuring they have large, spacious homes, there are lots of things you can do to enrich your guinea pigs’ environment and help keep them stimulated and happy. Guinea pigs are curious critters and love to watch what’s going on around them. As well as a roomy indoor hutch, they also need an outdoor run so they can have a bit of a nose and a good graze. Because they’re quite shy they always need something to hide in when

they’re out in their run, in case they get scared. Cardboard boxes, tubes or pipes are great for this and also lots of fun. They enjoy running free indoors too – make sure they’re supervised and there are no escape holes! Guinea pigs aren’t actually big fans of toys as a rule but hiding small amounts of food for them to search for can also keep them entertained. Guinea pigs love company of their own kind but not of others, like rabbits, so keep them in a same-sex or neutered pair or small group.

motoring Traffic lights for motorways plan TESTS have begun this week on an innovative, pilot project designed to reduce congestion along the M62 near Warrington in Cheshire. Highways England is delivering the project at Croft Interchange - where junction 21a of the M6 meets junction 10 of the M62 – to give drivers smoother and more reliable journeys along the eastbound M62, one of the busiest commuter congestion hotspots in the region. When the testing is completed in December / January, electronic information signs and

variable mandatory speed limits on the M62, will combine with traffic lights on the motorway link roads from the M6, to provide smoother traffic flows. Andy Withington, Highways England’s programme delivery manager for the North West, said: “This is an opportunity to combine existing technology and traffic management systems in a novel way to see whether we can give drivers using the frequently congested eastbound M62, lower journey times during peak hours and smoother, more reliable journeys. “Once the system is fully up and running we’ll be monitoring its use over a period of up to a year. If it is successful – and we believe it will be – it could well be used on other motorway to

STOP GO: Traffic light scheme could be rolled out across the UK motorway link roads across the country.” The new motorway to motorway system will be introduced in 2 phases. The electronic variable message signs will be introduced first and drivers travelling between junction 9 and junction 11 of the eastbound M62 will start to see the signs in operation displaying mandatory variable speed limits and other information such as warnings of congestion. The second phase of the

scheme will see the traffic lights switched on at the end of the link roads onto the eastbound M62. Traffic leaving the M6 will be closely monitored and the lights will be controlled to minimise queuing onto the M6. The £7 million construction project involved installing some of the largest gantries ever used in the region to carry the electronic signs – crossing up to 10 lanes of traffic.

THE Guardia Civil have warned of the dangers to your life – and to your wallet – for wearing an increasing popular design of T-shirt when driving. The shirt’s design includes a diagonal black stripe across a white background that simulates a safety belt and is being used by many safety-last drivers to deceive the traffic cameras. The T-shirt has been advertised on a well-known website in different sizes and without promoting the price under the phrase of, “Funny anti-fines T-shirt. It simulates the seat belt for those that don’t want the hassle or

Ideal as a gift, a joke and perfect for parties.” Guardia Civil officers emphasises that wearing a seatbelt is key to saving lives and warns that 23 per cent of deaths in accidents are caused by people not wearing them. Penalties for not wearing a seatbelt can be as high as €200 and 3 points off the driver’s license. This fake T-shirt isn’t a new phenomenon however as, back in 2012 there was an increase in the number of fines for people not wearing seat belts following a warning from Chinese authorities of the proliferation of these shirts.

Gone skiing

Last Friday and Tuesday England earned two creditable 0-0 draws with world champions Germany and Brazil, both at Wembley in front of 84,000+ crowds. In the two games, manager Gareth Southgate gave debuts to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, Joey Gomez, Jack Cork, Tammy Abraham, Dominic Solanke and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The latter was named ‘Man of the Match’ against Germany when England fielded the most inexperienced team regards to caps won (37) since 1980. It was also their first goalless home draw in seven years and the first against Germany since 1982. Both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have bowed out of next year’s World Cup in Russia, ousted by Switzerland (1-0) and Denmark (5-1) in their twolegged play-off encounters. And Sweden dumped out four-time winners Italy 1-0. The Italians haven’t missed a World Cup in sixty years! Patrice Evra, sent-off for kicking a fan before Marseille’s Europa League game against Vitoria Guimaraes earlier this month, has left the French club. He’s also been banned by UEFA for nine months and fined €10,000 (£8,829). Last Saturday, a 20-year-old football record was broken by goalkeeper Paul Bastock (aged 47) who surpassed ex-England stopper Peter Shilton’s feat of 1,249 competitive club appearances by helping Wisbech beat Thetford 4-1 in the FA Vase. DON’T MISS OUT: Reservations can be made up until and including Friday December 15

FINESTRAT’S Council of Youth has organised a ski-trip to the Sierra Nevada from March 1 – March 4 2018. The Sierra Nevada (meaning “snowy mountain range” in Spanish) is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia. It boasts the highest point of continental Spain and Europe outside the Caucasus Mountains and the Alps, Mulhacen at 3,478 metres above sea level. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe’s most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm

temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little further, Almeria and Malaga. A place on the ski-trip costs €250 for Finestrat residents and €290 for nonresidents and includes travel (by bus), halfboard accommodation in a three-star hotel on the slopes plus unlimited lift passes and classes, as well as insurance. Reservations can be made at Finestrat Town Hall up until and including Friday December 15. For more information, get in touch – 606 936 432 / joventut@finestrat.org.

Up, down...

In Adelaide, England’s cricketers (293/207-9 declared) won their friendly against an Australia XI (233-9 declared/75) by 192 runs. Mark Stoneman hit two halfcenturies, while Chris Woakes took six wickets. The first Test starts on 23 November. Aussie Mitchell Starc entered the record books last week by taking two hat-tricks in the same game, for NSW against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield. Also down under, England’s women kept their Ashes Series alive by drawing their last game against Australia. Host captain Elise Perry (who also plays football by the way) smashed a world record 215 not-out in her country’s innings of 448-9 declared. The next match (a T20 bash) is today which England must win! Home favourite Marc Marquez came third in the Spanish MotoGP in Valencia last Sunday to clinch his fourth world title in five years. F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, starting from the back of the grid, finished fourth in the Brazilian Grand Prix, behind Sebastian Vettel (winner), Valterri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen The final race is in Abu Dhabi on 28 November. In Rugby League’s World Cup, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are out but England are into the quarter-finals and will play Papua New Guinea on Sunday for a place in the semis.

VICTORIOUS: Some of the event winners

There were Rugby Union wins last weekend for England 21-8 v Argentina, Ireland 38-3 v South Africa and Scotland 44-38 v Samoa but Wales lost 29-21 to Australia. This weekend it’s England-Australia, Ireland-Fiji, Scotland-New Zealand & Wales-Georgia. Top PL football matches coming up include Arsenal-Tottenham, Leicester-Manchester City, Manchester United-Newcastle & WBA-Chelsea, and we could see the 20,000th PL goal scored (since 1992). Also, it’s Burton-Sheffield United and Reading-Wolves (Championship); Rotherham-Shrewsbury (FL1); Luton-Cambridge (FL2); Ross County v Celtic, unbeaten in 63 domestic games (SPL) and Atletico Madrid-Real Madrid & Barcelona-Leganes (Spain). The ATW Tennis finals continue in London; the RM Golf Classic is underway (1619 November) in America and Cheltenham’s November NH race meeting starts today.

THE II Marcha BTT cycling race took place in Calpe last weekend with over 350 cyclists covering 32 kilometres and almost 1000 metres in altitude difference. The event - part of the Circuit de les Comarques

Centrals - was organised by the Club Ciclista de Calpe and a group of volunteers. This year, there were 100 cyclists more than last year – in first place was Jukka Vastaranta with a time of 1:25:16, followed by Dani

Cepa with 1:29:58 and Saoro Moll with 1:29:59. Locally, Jorge Lopez came first with a time of 1:34:37, followed by Antonio Torres in second with 1:34:39 and Marc Jewell in third with 1:37:27.
