by Ray Chadwick THANKS to a subsidy from the Alicante regional government, hotel groups in Benidorm will be able to promote themselves even more to the British tourist market.

HOSBEC – the organisation representing hotels – will be allocating more than 50 per cent of the total grant from the Costa Blanca Patronage towards a campaign, aimed more at people

travelling from the UK with tour operator Jet2.

An amount of €90,000 was announced during a signing ceremony between leaders of the Diputacion de Alicante, César Sánchez, and the leader of HOSBEC Toni Mayor and was the launch pad for the development of a series of new promotional campaigns and improvement programmes for tourist accommodation in the Alicante province as a whole but in Benidorm in particular.

An enormous wave of pink BENIDORM joined many towns and cities along the Costa Blanca by turning pink at the weekend as part of a number of events in Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Organised by Anémona Marina Baixa (a local women’s selfhelp group), and estimated 3,000 people took part in a 10 kilometre ‘tide of pink’ walk that began in the Plaza de los Reyes de España, along the Poniente beachfront and on to the Playa Levante to finish in Avenida Bilbao.

The Mayor of Benidorm Toni Pérez - called the event “a great success” and thanked all those that turned out to support the event in such high numbers.

by Ray Chadwick TAKING advantage of his time in the Alicante province having started the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday, the Emeritus King Juan Carlos I made an historic visit to the Caves of Canelobre in Busot the night before. He was greeted by the Mayor of Busot, Alejandro Morant, and explained to the king the affection he was held in by the local people and how proud he was to welcome him to Busot.

During their conversation, Morant took the op-

portunity to tell King Juan Carlos that his grandfather – Alfonso XIII – visited the area in 1911. For security reasons, and at the request of the Royal House, there were no photographs taken of His Majesty’s visit.

The collaboration between the tourism sectors and provincial governments are also looking to develop initiatives connected to health care in hotels and to improve the continued competitiveness and sustainability of the Costa Blanca tourism model.

Improvements in employment regulations and the working conditions of hotel workers will also be a focus for future working groups.

HYBRID: Generous annual tax discounts for Calpe residents

by Lynn Whittaker CALPE is the latest in a number of municipalities across Spain to encourage their citizens to convert to electric or hybrid vehicles.

At a recent plenary meeting of the council, a modification to the local regulation on the tax raised for motor vehicles agreed to reduce the rate by 75 per cent for electric vehicles and 50 per cent for hybrids. The measure aims to promote the progressive movement to these kind of vehicles in the municipality and to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions, to enable them to comply

with targets set to be achieved by 2020.

At the same meeting, approval was given for a number of schemes to help students at both school and university levels, such as assistance with transport and textbook costs.

To be able to carry out these plans, â‚Ź105,000 has been allocated to support those families with students relying on public transport to get to their centres of study.

Other subjects discussed at the plenary were a request for the installation of more bins and rubbish containers in the urban areas of Calpe and to increase street cleaning services.

by Glenn Scott THE LOCAL government team in Dénia have decided to clear the promenades of terraces and certain structures to allow more space for pedestrians.

This decision will particularly affect three areas that contain around 20 bars and restaurants – Raset, Bellavista, Les Drassanes and Cervantes – that will be required to remove temporary extensions built over recent years that currently completely block off sections of the pavement. Restaurants along the Raset would be asked to remove their large terrace exten-

sions before March 1, 2018.

The proposal by the governing team of the PSPV and Compromis will be discussed at this week’s plenary meeting with the aim of a modification to local regulations being brought in and enforced.

The new regulations will define precisely how the future terraces must look after the March 1 deadline.

Along the Cervantes promenade, only umbrellas will be permitted and along the rest of the seafront only white pergolas will be allowed to be installed and only three metres in front of the premises.

Trapped car driver taken to hospital TWO people have been injured in a road traffic accident on the N-332 in Pedreguer.

The drivers of a car and a van were involved in the latest incident on the acci-

dent-prone N-332. Paramedics attended the scene and after receiving initial treatment, the two victims were taken to the Denia Hospital by an ambulance from the SAMU emer-

gency service. Local fire brigade sources said that one of its units were also called to assist and were required to rescue the car driver who was trapped inside his vehicle.

Red Cross attend to half marathon runners

TEAMS from the Cruz Roja were kept very busy on Sunday during the running of a half marathon in Valencia. A total of 119 people required treatment of various kinds at the 2017 Trinidad Alfonso Half Marathon, with six runners taken to hospital due to muscle injuries and spasms caused by physical ex-

haustion after they crossed the finishing line.

87 of the patients were men and 32 women, of whom seven were treated for respiratory complications with most of the interventions were required once the race had finished. Another 23 runners were treated by paramedics along the route.

Public car park closed for two weeks

THE PUBLIC car park located in the Finestrat town centre will be closed for two weeks to carry out a number of improvements to the parking zones. The Department of Works announced that the work will continue until Tuesday November 7 and only those residents that have a special monthly parking permit, around 90, can continue to use the basement floor during the period to park.

Councillor Tomás Sellés said: “It was important to act because many of the tarmac areas and some of the slopes and shown a marked deterioration, especially on the first floor.” The budget for this programme of work amounts to €35,000.

How and why did that happen?

FIREFIGHTERS in Dénia were flushed with success on Monday night after releasing a man that had become trapped by a toilet.

They rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a business on Calle Marqués de Campo de Dénia, and were greeted with the sight of the man – about 50-years-old – with his head stuck between the toilet and the wall. They immediately looked for a way to free him, and decided to unscrew the toilet from the floor but before doing so called for backup from the SAMU medical team to ensure the man’s safety in case of further mishaps. It took about an hour to free the man who, whilst stunned, was in good condition and didn’t need hospital treatment.

Wet wipes blamed for flooding issues BENITACHELL council has launched an awareness campaign via social media networks to prevent future blockages in the drainage systems caused by the number of wet-wipes being flushed down

toilets. The problem has been exacerbated due to the recent rains and caused flooding in a number of homes. The fact that these products are not biodegradable adds to the problems and seriously affects

the management of wastewater and purification in the municipality.

A statement from the council said: Wipes should be considered as solid matter and therefore should not be flushed as if it were toilet paper.”

“ As we have only lived here since october 2015, we can’t really judge if there has been an important increase, but it has certainly been busier than last year.”

A GROUP of residents living in Javea have made formal complaints about the Cannabis Club located in their area.

They are becoming increasingly affected and annoyed by the smell that is allegedly emanating from the premises which they say has been the case for the past five months since the place had been open. They have been assured that the owner of the Club was looking to solve the problem but to date there has been no solution, with some locals saying that the smells are getting stronger and stronger.

Residents say that they have repeatedly warned the police that

such a smell could cause problems to some, especially as many children live close by to the premises.

Those affected are keen to point out that they’re not against the activity. One said: “We’re not asking for the Club to be closed, but a solution to the current issues. If a nightclub or a pub has to be soundproofed so as not to cause discomfort to the neighbours with noise, then this place should take similar measures regarding the smell.”

In addition, people living in the building above the Club say that for a few days during the week, their extractors are working 24 hours a day and thus are making noise during the time people are trying to rest and sleep.

Crafty jewel thieves apprehended LOCAL POLICE in San Vicente del Raspeig have arrested two men for stealing an amount of jewellery from a house.

The alarm was raised during the afternoon when two men had allegedly just robbed a property on Paseo de los Olivos and fled in the direction of Avenida de Haygón. At a nearby junction, a police officer intercepted a man that fitted the description of one of the alleged robbers.

Their modus operandi was for one of the men to ring the front doorbell, and whilst offering to do some work for the owner of the house – this time an 83-year-old – and talking out on the street to distract her, the other man sneaked into the door.

Town centre crash needs road closure A WOMAN suffered injuries and was trapped in her car after being involved in a crash with a truck in El Campello.

The accident occurred around 6pm and the two vehicles ended up in a virtual head-on crash for reasons that are still being investigated. All three sections of the emergency services were called to the scene, with one of the fire brigades needing to cut the woman free from her car that took over an hour to accomplish. She was later transferred to hospital.

The road where the accident took place was closed to traffic for some hours until both vehicles involved were removed from the scene.

ANCHORED: Port of Dénia cannot accommodate such large floating visitors

by Ray Chadwick FIVE HUNDRED German cruise passengers were required to disembark from their cruise ship in small boats due to the size and depth of the port at Dénia.

The Amadea cruise ship – with 600 retired Germans and Austrians on board – arrived at 8am without any fanfare or welcoming party, and the only indications that the vessel had arrived nearby were its bright lights gleaming out to sea and a fleet of eight

buses in the harbour.

Amadea last arrived in Dénia back in 2014 but on that occasion its arrival was announced and promoted and was even greeted by the mayor at the time, Ana Kringe, who visited the port to welcome the visitors although only around 100 passengers chose to disembark.

This latest arrival, however, saw most of the passengers coming ashore and again they had to do it via boats. The Amadea – the first cruise ship ever to

arrive in Dénia in 2005 – is 193m long, 25m wide and a draft of 6.2m and thus too big to get into port and needed to anchor offshore. In fact, Dénia doesn’t even have a draft for a ship three-quarters the size of this one.

Despite the average elderly age of the passengers and the fact that many of them had mobility issues, it didn’t stop 500 of the 600 taking advantage of their time in Dénia and went on previously arranged coach excursions to València, Alicante, Calpe and Javea.

RESIDENTS of Jalon have complained to their local council at the decision to allow a funeral parlour to open in their municipality.

They are complaining that the only access to the planned business is by passing a children’s playground and in front of people who are enjoying a drink on some of the bar terraces. They say that the park area of

Les Oques is an area full of life...but these plans will throw a gloomy shadow over it and they have begun collecting signatures for a petition.

The mayor of Jalon, Joan Miquel Garcés, said that there are no municipal regulations to prevent a funeral parlour being opened, and “if the license is in order, we cannot deny it.”

Diving opportunities promoted in Birmingham and Dublin THE TOURISM Foundation of Benidorm has taken part in two tourist fairs aimed at members of the public.

The popular Costa Blanca tourist centre attended both The Dive Show in Birmingham and The Over 50+ Show in Dublin.

The Dive Show in Birmingham is regarded as the second most important diving exhibition next to the one held in London and ‘Visit Benidorm’ has attended the event for the third year in succession. The aim is to continue to promote the local diving facilities off the coast and to take advantage of the people that arrive at Alicante-Elche Airport from Birmingham International Airport.

Walking street to get 200 metre extension BENIDORM town hall has announced the next stage of a number of projects that included further pedestrianising of a popular area of the municipality.

More than €700,000 has been provisionally authorised for an additional 200 metres of work to pededtrianise Calle Tomás Ortuño in the old town and between Calle La Garita and Calle Los Limones.

The construction company Sigma have been given several days to formalise all the paperwork to execute the works which have been valued at €728,827.72 Benidorm’s councillor for works, José Ramón González de Zárate, said at the announcement: “We will follow the same model, design and standards of the first phase of the pedestrianisation that was completed earlier this year.”

He also noted that the project will no longer permit traffic along Calle San Antonio and all the surrounding areas will see a reorganisation of the traffic flow during and after the work.

Council help for old buildings

OWNERS of properties more than 50 years old in Xixona are eligible for a grant of €5,000 to modernise them. The awards were agreed at a recent municipal meeting to comply with the law in connection with the Mandatory Reports of Evaluation of Buildings (IEE) that applies to buildings of that age and higher.

To qualify for the grant, the applicants must be the owner of the property; the community of owners must be legally constituted; or in the case of buildings that are non-profit making, the company that owns them.

Exports up in August

CALLE TOMÁS ORTUÑO: Next stage of pedestrian area planned with the Palau d’Esports in Benidorm was also awarded to Los Serranos with a budget of €284,947.22. Work on this project is due to begin any day now and

formed part of the 2017 budget for the municipality, and will provide a safer route for pedestrians between Calle Italia and the sports centre.

ACCORDING to data released by the Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX), exports from the Alicante province increased by 3 per cent in August compared to the same point last year. Businesses in the area managed to invoice €349,000,000 for their shipments abroad.

Despite these figures being very positive, the fact is that exports from Alicante continue to return data that is lower than the national

average, since the rate of exports across Spain as a whole improved by 9 per cent during August 2017.

The sector that showed the most improvement was the recovery in the sales of footwear which in the entire Comunidad Valenciana increased by 6.3 per cent year-on-year to €111.7m.

At the other end of the scale were exports in toys.

They saw their exports drop by 5.4 per cent in the same time scale.

Severely injured cyclist returns home

by Ray Chadwick FIVE MONTHS after his horrific accident, Scott Gordon has been discharged from hospital and returned to his home in Javea.

He’s been hospitalised in the Aigües Vives all that time following the crash on the N-332 in Olivia and was collected by his wife and his fellow cyclist Andrés Contreras who was also serious injured on May 7.

Scott and Andrés were among the lucky ones who survived the crash – three of their fellow cyclists died in the incident – caused by

a driver who was later found to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. In the immediate days following the crash, both Scott and Andrés were so seriously injured that they may not have pulled through their ordeal, and Scott spent 19 days in the intensive care department of the Denia Hospital.

He was later reunited with Andrés at the Aigües Vives Hospital where the pair have made a remarkable recovery thanks to a tough rehabilitation programme which is still ongoing.

Originally, Scott was due to have an operation on one of his femur’s the day before

his release but this has now been put back to November 3. He still needs the aid of crutches to help him get around and his jaw has not fixed back as well as was hoped and will shortly visit a specialist in Valencia.

He will also continue rehabilitation with physiotherapist Jero Benavent who also treats Andrés, and both are aware that they have a long way to go to achieve a full recovery.

Andrés was due to have the external frame that he had around his right leg removed on the day of Scott’s release and said that we was going to start swimming as a way of aiding a speedier recovery.

The TRAM not stopping... Fire prevention measures signed

A FIRE forced the closing of the TRAM service as it passed through Benidorm on Tuesday afternoon. The fire - the cause of which is unknown – happened under the bridge that carries the Avenida Comunidad Europa that crosses the tracks at that point. The TRAM service was suspended as a precautionary measure.

Two fire engines from Benidorm attended the scene and quickly extinguished the fire which are believed to have been caused by some rubbish and some household items that have built up in the area and started to burn, and suspected to have been started deliberately.

JAVEA: Home to cyclist Scott Gordon THE MUNICIPALITY of Javea has signed a contract with Vivers Centre Verd for carrying out a programme of works aimed at fire prevention and environmental protection in the area of La Granadela. The project will last for three and a half months and have a budget of €206,611 and will include clearing a number of trees on municipal land not previously affected by fires in the areas that border the access road to La Cala de la Granadella and the planting of new fire resistant species of plant such as carob and olive trees.

BENIDORM: British tourist numbers showing first signs of decline

Gap between British and Spanish tourism narrowing

by Lynn Whittaker AFTER months of falling numbers, the numbers of Spanish people staying in Benidorm have shown a rise at the start of October.

At the same time, the numbers of British tourists has suffered a slight decrease during the first 15 days of the month and now account for the same number of overnight stays as the Spanish.

These figures were made public by

Hosbec – the hotel management group – following their bi-monthly report called BigDataHosbec.

Overall hotel occupancy in Benidorm for the first fortnight of October was 92.5 per cent and only 0.9 per cent lower than the same period in 2016, but it’s been acknowledged that this period includes the two holidays on October 9 and 12.

Despite the increase in Spanish tourism to Benidorm for that period, there is

a 7 per cent drop for the year as a whole with 300,000 fewer overnight stays than last year. Hosbec are warning that these small movements in the amount of British tourism are small signs that their dominance is about to end.

Their president said: “With this growth in the number of Spaniards we are looking at ways to encourage them to make Benidorm one of their favourite destinations in the same way we did with the British a few years ago.”

JALON VALLEY ARC was called on to help a young girl who found three very small kittens in the bins in Javea. She had been driving around looking and asking for help for the kittens. Unfortunately, one had died and the other two were in a very bad state with cuts and maggots. The kittens were seen by a local mobile vet who took immediate action and stabilised them. The kittens are now in the care of Jalon Valley ARC, being bottled fed every 2 hours and are getting stronger each day. Their wounds are healing nicely. For all they

have been through they are amazing. The ‘Bin’ kitties have been called Dusty (boy) and Bella (girl) they were just 16 days old on 22nd October. Parcent celebrates in the autumn sunshine

by Steve Guttridge THE PICTURESQUE village of Parcent celebrated it´s ´More Parcent´ fair last weekend.

Visitors from far and wide joined the local community in a 3 day celebration of arts, crafts and entertainment in the streets and cafes.

Food and drink stalls did a roaring trade as craft exhibitors displayed and sold their hand-made wares. The Church Plaza was alive with laughter and conversation as people mingled over a drink or a bite to eat, and all at a fraction of coastal prices. On Saturday night, rock and pop bands played late into the evening. Human tower displays added to the carnival atmosphere, and on Sunday there were interactive workshops for children including clay modelling and bookmark making.

Local Deputy Mayor and a driving force behind the Fair, Jacqueline Cotterill, rolled out the welcome carpet to RTN and as Jacqui showed us around the events, her passion for this beautiful village shone through. Jacqui moved to Spain from the UK nearly thirty years ago and as she opened the refurbished public exhibition annexe

for us at the Town Hall, she spoke with understandable pride about how Parcent has been revitalised as a village where community events take place. It’s not hard to see why - the village sparkled in the warm Autumn sunshine as we wandered through the charming and ancient winding streets.

Part of the event includes an Art Exhibition. With the title Four Women’s Palette and Brush, four local artists have provided an innovative and interesting collection of colourful abstract works which will remain on display in the Town Hall annexe until the 30th November.

The opening times are Monday and Thursday 9.00-15.00hrs and 17.0021.00hrs, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9.00-15.00hrs.

Set in rolling hills just 13 miles from the coast, this lovely unspoilt village is a shining example of the real Spain, and the drive up through the hills reveals stunning views across valleys and gorges.

The scenery around the village is some of the prettiest on the Costa Blanca and it’s easy to see why Parcent became such a popular choice for a holiday home or a permanent move to Spain.

With 30% of the Parcent popula-

tion being expat Europeans, including many British, it seems Parcent offers a vibrant village life with the opportunity to integrate as little or as much as anyone would want to.

As I headed back to my car I wandered past an energetic game of street Pelota and the local youth band was tuning up to close the event. I began to wonder why I hadn’t discovered this gem of a village before.

Autumn fair success for the BBC

THE Benitachell Bowls Club (BBC) held a very successful Autumn Fair at the weekend.

Thanks to the hard work of many of the members alongside some outside traders, there were a number of stalls selling a wide variety of products. Galaxy Radio was in charge of the music and DJ Mike

Dennison hosted the day with great humour and professionalism and created a great atmosphere.

Also in attendance were the sponsor of the BBC – Vives-Pons – and it was nice to see them and their families try their hand at the game of bowls.

Purr-fect plan A PAIR of tigers rescued from an abandoned zoo near the war-torn city of Aleppo in Syria is to be rehomed at a big cat facility in Nijeberkoop. Their rescue and journey via Turkey and Jordan took two months to complete.

During the visit that will last a few days, the groups will be touring a number of municipalities to increase their first hand knowledge on the growing market for wedding tourism in the area.

During their stay in the province, the Russian delegation will visit beaches, coves, cliffs and natural landscapes of Alicante, Altea, Benidorm and Calpe, areas that are regarded as perfect backgrounds for wedding photographs. Cancer charities gain from superb turnout TWO OF the main cancer charities in Spain benefitted from a special evening organised by Nicky Chapman from Nicky’s Jam Session.

The AECC and Aspanion were the beneficiaries of a wonderful turnout made up from local people from Benidorm and surrounding

areas who enjoyed and appreciated the talent on display from some fantastic musicians.

The raffle raised a sum of €750 – an excellent amount in itself – and then G4G (Giving4Giving) added a further €1,250 to take the total to €2,000 to be shared between the two charities.

U3A Denia Allotment Open Day OVER 100 people attended an Open Day at the weekend held by the Allotment Group. During the day they were treated to delicious freshly cooked BBQ burgers, Paella, empanadas as well as a selection of vegetarian dishes and fresh salad and coleslaw, and followed by various homemade cakes.

Everyone was treated to drinks and freshly made Sangria and there were stalls with lovely homemade pickles, chutneys and jams made from vegetables produced on the allotments. There was a bottle stall, and one selling lovely hand painted shoes and miniature wheelbarrows filled with plants.

All products were offered on a donation

basis and the money raised will go towards the purchase of equipment for the use of the allotment owners.

As people arrived they were handed a free raffle ticket – the prize being a hamper full of fresh produce from the allotments.

It was a very successful and well supported event and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended.

There is only one allotment still available – so if you would like to own one the cost is just €10 joining fee and €40 annually which includes water.

Local charity to sponsor riding for the disabled

Endangered snake arrives in Terra Natura

RARE EXHIBIT: ‘Taylor’s Cantil’ brought in to help in reproduction programme

The charity Grant a Wish is sponsoring an exciting pilot scheme which will allow 12 severely disabled children, who attend the Raquel Payȧ special school in Denia (www.denia.com/raquelpaya/amp/), to have special riding lessons at the Lledò equestrian centre located on the CV 724, between La Sella and La Jara.

Since Roman times riding has been known to have therapeutic value, particularly for injured or disabled people. All over the world, stables offer ‘riding for the disabled’ to the huge benefit of disabled adults and children alike.

While riding is renowned for its physical benefits, such as improving core strength and posture, children who learn to ride – whether able-bodied or not - also grow in selfconfidence and gain a sense of achievement.

Head teacher at Raquel Payȧ, Miguel Ivars said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for 12 of our pu-

pils. We have chosen those children who stand to gain the greatest benefit from riding. It is known to enhance sensory perception, cognitive ability, to instill greater emotional stability and also offers social benefits. This wonderful initial funding is being used from some of the funds raised at the Oceana Pink and Blue Ball on September 27 th at the Oceana club in Benissa.

Grant a Wish has offered a huge opportunity for the school and its pupils - we would not be able to undertake this project otherwise. The first lesson will be on November 8th and we, together with the stables, will be happy to meet any potential sponsors in the firm belief that we can find more funding to extend riding lessons beyond Christmas and throughout the school year’.

Grant a Wish supports both individuals and good causes. The charity currently provides ongoing support for a men’s shelter in Gandia, delivering food, kitchen supplies and toilet-

ries on a weekly basis, and an orphanage in El Verger – the children receive gifts and games, and also enjoy regular outings with the Grant a Wish team. Additionally, individual cases are supported, and the charity is always happy to consider requests for help from people in need. Funds are raised through special events, and also through the work of the chic Grant a Wish boutique in Javea – Plaza de la Constitution.

The boutique sells a classy selection of new and second hand clothes, as well as accessories, books, CDs and DVDs and much more.

Anyone wishing to donate to the charity, or to enquire about sponsoring a child’s riding lesson, is invited to visit the boutique, which is run by volunteers. You will always get a warm welcome and, if it’s a Monday, a cup of coffee so do drop in! The boutique is open on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30 – 1.30, or on Tuesdays and Fridays from 5 – 7 p.m.

BENIDORM’S FAMOUS theme park Terra Natura has announced an addition to its poisonous creature’s exhibition hall.

The snake Agkistrodon bilineatus taylori, also known as the Taylor’s Cantil, is considered one of the most endangered species of reptiles in America due to the destruction of its natural habitat.

The specimen that has just arrived in Terra Natura came from the Zoo Aquarium in Madrid and measures 30 centimetres and weighs about 400 grams. The male snake has arrived to complete a pair with a female exhibit that

already inhabits the complex with the aim to achieve reproduction in captivity.

To complete the venomous creatures exhibition in Terra Natura and coinciding with Halloween, a separate display will feature two skeletons of Central American rattlesnakes and a moccasin copperhead which will remain as permanent features of the hall.

These skeletal forms will enable visitors to see the fangs and the lower jaw and appreciate how the separated jaw that is attached only to a muscle to allow it to swallow larger prey. The rattlesnake skeleton shows the makeup of its tail and thus an intact rattle!

School library gets visit from supporters

CURRENT CHARITY STEWARD of the Javea Lodge, Bro Malcolm March, took time out to visit the village school in Benigembla to view the newly purchased and recently installed ‘Library Corner’.

The furniture, books and games for the ‘Library Corner’ had been purchased with a donation of €430, made to the school by Freemasons of Javea Lodge earlier this year following fund raising in memory of recently deceased WBro Keith Hart. Keith was a Benigembla resident and staunch friend and fund raiser for the school over many years. Keith’s widow, Mrs Jenny Hart, also visited the new library and said that Keith would have been so pleased to see what the donations had achieved and also added “we always loved it here in the village.

Keith was very happy here and loved the village and the school“.

Benigembla pre-school and primary school has only ten children up to the age of eleven years old and, in common with small schools in many Spanish villages, suffers from a severe lack of funds.

The Headmistress thanked all the Javea Lodge Freemasons for the several

donations they have made in recent years, including one of over €1,000 made during Keith’s year as Worshipful Master. This had permitted the purchase of sports equipment and a large storage shed, in addition to the recent ‘Library Corner’.

The way I see it… by

FOR SOME weeks now I have banged on about politics, and politician’s. I must apologise, it must be that I have now become a grumpy old man.

However, I want to wave a banner to one of the greatest ideas that anybody has come up with in recent times.

The Invictus Games, where men and women who have survived appalling injuries, compete in an Olympic style sports games, these games have become part of their rehabilitation, some have appalling injuries after losing limbs or sight while serving in the armed forces.

I want to denounce the British Government for the continued attempt to try to show the rest of the world that we are still a great fighting nation.

It has cost us a fortune that we can ill afford, apart from the overseas aid that we have to continue to give to the countries that we have fought in or fight in at this present day.

As our young men and women lose their lives and their limbs, in god forbidden places that we should not have been in, in the first place.

I applaud Prince Harry for his success in bringing the games into the world spotlight, allowing us mortals to see how great these young people can be even with terrible injuries.

I know some Royal Princes can be criticised, after all he was born into royalty. It was not his fault and this young, upright man has succeeded in life in his own way, becoming a soldier and serving in the frontline was his brave choice, he could have joined air miles Andy, his uncle jetting around, winking at pretty girls.

No! Harry did his thing and since he left the services he is paying back his colleagues, using his warmth, humour and kindness. It was good to see

him recently with his lovely girlfriend Meghan, who I am a great fan of, after watching her for a long time in the brilliant TV series Suits. I do hope they get married as they look so in love and happy together.

As I am writing about the Invictus games I want to mention one man in particular. He is Corporal Ricky Paul Furgusson, formerly of The Rifles.

Ricky Furgusson went to the aid of wounded comrades in Afghanistan, he smiled broadly as he stepped forward on carbon fibre legs to receive a gallantry medal from the Queen, his bravery on the battlefield helped save the lives of many of his comrades.

Corporal Ricky Furgusson, 25, lost both legs, an eye, and all his fingers on

both hands as he travelled backwards and forwards four times to rescue colleagues in Afghanistan in January. He has only been on his artificial legs for six weeks, but was determined to walk up to the Queen to receive the Military Cross at Buckingham Palace.

This is a man to admire, many youngsters, who sit around guzzling beer and smoking weed should look to this kind of person as an example of what being British is, this is a part of our culture that we seem to have lost. Must we go on fighting other people’s wars, and losing some of our young people that could be the backbone of Britain, I hope not.

The curse of mankind is unquestioned acceptance of one’s enslavement. Throughout history, humans use fellow humans to war on their foes. Wage-slaves are used to manufacture goods or manage services, to sell on at a profit or to serve the profiteering elite.

The worst century for human slavery was the 20th century and the 21st century may be worse. Virtually everything made is manufactured under battery hen workplace conditions. Workers don’t question their hand to mouth galley slave existence.

The Soviet Union’s only worthwhile achievements were built by slaves. These accomplishments were attained by captives harvested from over thirty nations surrendered to or occupied by the Bolsheviks.

A taboo topic is that virtually every slave in the Soviet Gulag was transported by an infrastructure; ships, cattle cars and vehicles, provided by the Western powers. Average life expectancy in the Gulag was 40 days; there were plentiful replacements. Tens of millions of Europeans died. The true figures will never be known as no one then or now is interested in keeping records.

Soviet ‘Five Year Plan’ successes were dependent upon captives described by Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky as ‘White Negroes’ .

Sub-Saharan Africans plundered and sold other Africans to visiting slave ship owners. Many English exiles, sentenced by the courts for trivial crimes, were sold and bartered en-route by Australia-bound shipowners to African chiefs.

Since biblical times the Arab enslavers of Africa depopulated the coastal regions of Mediterranean Europe. Even England and Ireland were raided to feed the Moors insatiable demand for European slaves.

Another taboo topic: Taxes spent on war in the last 10-years alone could have bought every American citizen an idyllic home in an all-facilities garden community.

The money spent on just interest payable on warrelated loans would provide every U.S. citizen with a two-month paid vacation every year. Do the math: Total cost of U.S. wars over the last 10 years $6 trillion.

The average cost of a small home is $60,000. Number of homes built for $6 trillion 100 million.

The insatiable U.S. and EU economies are war economies dominated by Parliaments, Congress, and Pentagon, corporate and banking interests.

An uncomfortable truth; a high number of wage slaves are indentured slaves to the banking and political systems. Anyone who hates his work but does so for security is enslaved. He is no different from the galley slave or gladiator who wields the state’s sword or pulls the oar knowing that failure to do so results in work, food and water deprivation.

Something stirs in deepest Norfolk by

Even under a leaden sky on a December day, the vast flatness of the Norfolk countryside is inescapable.

The distinctive Norfolk dialect is a language encapsulated in its landscape, with long vowels and wide horizons, summing up the county and its people.

Norfolk is familiar to us during the summer months, with its endless skies and fantastic light so beloved by painters, who are as numerous as the wild fowl in the coastal wetlands.

With the sunshine on your back and from the unbroken vista of fields and pastures of the hinterland, to the long sandy beaches and marshland of the coastal regions, there is an other-world-

ly feel to this lovely eastern county.

But what could possibly entice someone here on a bleak winter’s day?

Seven miles north of the town of Fakenham and almost without warning to the unwary, we turn into a narrow country lane, indicating Thursford village. With barely room for two vehicles to pass and with no street lighting, this would appear to be heading into uncharted territory.

The only clue to the uninitiated that something interesting lays ahead is the procession of car tail lights and a discernible glow in the sky that increases in intensity as we progress.

Then after a bare half mile and quite suddenly, we enter a massive flood-

lit car park where fluorescently clad stewards are busily directing the flow of cars and coaches.

Enter the magical world of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular.

To most people, the name Thursford will elicit looks of incomprehension.

In the summer months it is home to one of the most important steam collections in the world, but during November and December it is totally converted and given a Christmas theme; with almost 130 thousand people attending and like us, many returning year on year.

It is perhaps Christmas’ best kept secret and yet paradoxically, the biggest and most breathtaking of all

Christmas shows.

It would take much more space to adequately describe this event, and even then I could not hope to do it justice. The ambience is sheer enchantment and it simply has to be experienced firsthand.

The content is a combination of traditional Christmas and variety, but the genius of John Cushing, Thursford’s producer and director, is to tie the whole package together with a loving festive ribbon and deliver a memorable Christmas extravaganza.

This Yuletide masterpiece is a musthave addition to everyone’s bucket list. But do it soon, some of you are looking peaky.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Changing verbs from second to third person singular We are well on the way to understanding one of the most fundamental things about Spanish verbs and that is that a subtle change of a couple of letters makes a big difference to the meaning.

This is so alien to us English speakers and really explains why we develop such a phobia about them. Another reason for our angst about verbs is that unlike the Spanish, who study their own language in a very conventional way at school, most of us have little grounding in English grammar so therefore are at a complete disadvantage if someone starts to teach us Spanish in a grammatical way. And there’s a third reason! When you are born into a particular language community your brain develops according to the language that you are brought up speaking, so trying to convince your brain to put words together differently is a bit like trying to make a computer use a program that it is not designed for.

These reflections are supposed to encourage you rather than make you want to give up! It is my belief that if someone really wants to learn and has the language explained to them in a way they can relate to, then they will slowly grasp it and start to make progress. This requires patience and also a certain amount of self-belief and self-confidence. If you say you’ll never learn it, you never will. If you are positive and determined to go forward, you will, in your own way and at your own pace.

So, the fact is that in English we hardly make any changes to verbs. Take a verb like “play” – it can only change to “plays” “played” and “playing” – that’s it! Any other information we want to communicate, about who plays or when they play, has to be done by adding other words, such as people words: I, you, he, she, we, they and other little words like : do, did, does, will, won’t, be, am, are is etc. So in English we make combinations like: “he plays”, “they will play”, “I have played”, or “she will be playing”.

In Spanish we can indicate the same information of who and when by changing the endings of the verbs themselves. Whereas “play” in English only has four possible forms, its equivalent in Spanish will have about 50 variations!

But the good news is that we have already started to see and accept this gradually, as in

the course of these articles we have learnt some of these subtle variations. For example we now know all of this about the verb “speak”: hablar (to speak) hablo (I speak), hablas (you speak – informal), habla (you speak – formal).

But now to what I promised you for today – how to change verbs so that they mean “he” or “she” does something. This is just so easy! All we have to do is take the informal “you” form and remove the letter “s”. If this operation looks familiar to you it should do, as it is identical to the way we produce the formal “you” or usted version.

As usual, some practical examples are needed.

Hablo inglés I speak English Hablas inglés You speak English (informal) Habla inglés You speak English (formal) Habla inglés He speaks English, she speaks English.

Voy a dormir I’m going to sleep Vas a dormir You are going to sleep (informal) Va a dormir You are going to sleep (formal) Va a dormir He is going to sleep, she is going to sleep.

In the sincere hope that you are still with me and that all this is meaning something – I will now anticipate another question that you might ask, as people often do. If the same form is used to mean “you”, “he” and “she”, then how on earth do we know which one is meant in a sentence?

Aha – the answer to this is easy! It is the real life context that tells us. Just as in English, if I say “he speaks English” I assume you know who “he” is, otherwise I would add the person’s name: “Bill speaks English”. Similarly in Spanish, we assume knowledge of the person otherwise we have to add that information: “Bill habla inglés”. If however I am referring to “you” in a polite way and not to a “he” or a “she”, then if necessary I can add the word usted just to make this clear.

U3A in Oliva – new year, new people, fresh ideas THE U3A in Oliva follow the academic year for their calendar of events, which means that they’ve just begun a new year. There is a new committee and they are already brimming with fresh ideas.

The group now have a specialist travel team headed by a wonderful Dutch lady called Anja. She recently organised their first trip of the season when a full coach load of members visited the monasteries of Simat de Valldigna and San Jerónimo de Cotalba in Alfauir. Each tour was accompanied by a very informative guide and followed by a pleasant lunch of paella in the cloister of Saint Jerónimo.

Massive congratulations to Anja and her team, although it should be pointed out that a dangerous precedent has been set by her thanks to her generosity of providing mid-morning cakes for everyone!

Don’t suffer in silence by

Seven years ago, in preparation for my move from the UK to Spain, I so drastically pared down my worldly belongings that, by the end of the exercise, what was left fitted neatly into seven large cardboard boxes.

Thus I began my new life on the Costa Blanca with just my favourite cooking utensils, my iMac, some clothes and a lucrative publishing contract with a British company that had agreed to my relocation because everything I did was Internet based.

Blue skies and warm weather for most of year, plus financial stability and friendships made in Benidorm during previous holidays to the resort, would, I imagined, ensure a life of pure bliss.

Then something went drastically wrong around three years ago. The first warning signs occurred when I suddenly developed chronic depression and a fear of flying. This was followed by a series of crippling panic attacks every time I left my apartment, and, after col-

lapsing in the street one evening, I virtually became a recluse, venturing out only to buy provisions.

The agoraphobia had a devastating effect on my work as my contract required me to travel four times a year to London to meet with the company chiefs and discuss future plans.

This became such an ordeal that, after excusing myself from several meetings, I was compelled to explain my predicament. Company board members were sympathetic but made clear that it was in my own interests as well as theirs to get myself sorted out.

That’s when I splashed out more than £400 on a device that sends electronic pulses to the brain, and is meant to cure post-traumatic stress disorder, which I believed I was suffering.

This from The National Institute of Mental Health: “Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event. Some experiences, like the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one, can also cause PTSD. Symptoms usually begin early, within three months of the traumatic incident, but sometimes they begin years afterward.

“Symptoms may last more than a month and be severe enough to interfere with relationships or work … The course of the illness varies. Some people recover within six months, while others have symptoms that last much longer.

In some people, the condition becomes chronic.”

The device helped somewhat but not enough to cure me, and I reluctantly concluded that I would need to consult a psychotherapist. I say reluctantly because I have never been one for discussing my problems with others, always choosing to bottle my emotions.

So I sought help from Stephen Ashley, a therapist who holds weekly consultations in Alfaz del Pi and other places too, and quickly came to realise that, while I had settled in Spain with a minimum of physical possessions, I had brought with me a ton of crippling emotional baggage.

My first meeting with Stephen took place on September 28, 2016, and by the end of the year I was able, without a trace of anxiety, to board a flight to the UK. I had several more sessions with him, and by March of this year I felt liberated enough to cease treatment. It was with a sadness, though, that I bid Stephen farewell because I went from dreading

our encounters – some of which were extremely taxing – to actively looking forward to them.

Regular readers will know that my columns are normally lighthearted observations of life in Spain, but I felt compelled to write this one in the hope that it may help folk who are suffering problems similar to those that turned my life into a living hell.

I’ll leave you with the opening lines of Paul Simons “50 Way to Leave Your Lover”: “The problem is all inside your head she said to me/The answer is easy if you take it logically …

Or, to put it another way, it’s good to talk.

Freemasons celebrate annual Ladies Night

MORE than 200 Freemasons from every point of the Alicante province assembled in Benidorm for their annual Ladies Night, and enjoyed a grand celebratory dinner that included live entertainment and a big charity raffle.

There are now 28 Freemasons Lodges throughout the region and each holds their own Ladies Night once a year, primarily to thank their wives and partners for their support throughout the year. Many Masons attend meetings two or three times a week, and their duties often require them to spend a lot of time away from home and most admit they could not do it without the support so freely given by their loved ones. Also, once a year, the grand Provincial Ladies Night takes place and this one was organised by Provincial Grand Master RWBro Michael Shilan and his lady, Muriel, who is a great support to Freemasonry.

This Ladies Night was held at the Grand Bali Hotel in Benidorm, beginning with

a cava and canapé reception ahead of a sumptuous four course dinner.

The toast to the ladies was given in an exemplary manner by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, WBro Rodney Bignell to which Muriel responded and thanked all the people who had helped in organising the event and to all those that had come along to enjoy the evening.

Entertainment for the evening was supplied by ‘Black Glitter’ and the grand charity raffle was held in support of the El Preventorio Children’s Home in Gandia. They benefitted from the sum of €1,600.

A great evening was enjoyed by all and finished at 1am by which time everyone had been fed, watered and danced out!

“John had no idea his investment fees were so high!” by

This article is being rurun from previous editions as the message is fundamental to ensuring you are getting the right financial advice here in Spain.

Last week, a gentleman, we’ll call him John, (I’ve changed his name to protect his identity) came to see me. John wanted a second opinion on an investment plan he had set up when he first moved to Spain 5 years ago. Somehow, despite strong financial markets, John’s portfolio hadn’t made a penny this entire time.

John was helpful enough to bring along all the valuations he’d been issued since he started his plan, along with some Fund Fact Sheets.

From these documents, I quickly realised that the funds that had been recommended to John had incredibly high entry and ongoing fees. These anomalies were directly related to the fact that these funds

were not FCA regulated.

FCA regulated funds cannot make non-disclosed payments to financial advisors, yet the funds John’s advisor had recommended actually charged the client a 5% entry fee, all of which was subsequently paid to John’s advisor here in Spain, and also paid John’s advisor a hidden ‘trail’ fee of 1% per year. This explains the incredibly high ongoing fees, which were 3 to 4 times higher than I’d expect of an FCA regulated fund.

In addition, the client had also paid open fees to his advisor – 3% to set up his plan and 1% annual advisor fee.

To add insult to injury, around 18 months ago, John’s advisor had switched all of John’s funds because his firm now had access to a new ‘exclusive’ fund. This cost John another 5% of his portfolio, to buy into a fund with absolutely no track record, which subsequently underperformed.

John’s total fund and advice fees over 5 years were close to 25%, over three-quarters of which had been paid to his advisor.

Due to the complex way the fees were disguised and layered, John had no idea his investment fees were so high. There were only 2 small reassurances I could make.

Firstly, he was not alone – 10,000s of expats in Spain have been set-up with similarly over-priced portfolios as this is widely practised by firms here. Secondly, it’s a very easy problem to solve.

John agreed for Chorus to take over the management of his portfolio, and we immediately reduced his annual advisor fee, and sold those over-priced, under-performing funds.

John now has a diverse portfolio of FCA regulated funds, with a strong track record from wellknown, UK based investment institutions, none of which charged an entry cost. His

total fund and ongoing advice fees are down to just 1% per year, meaning John will save significant amounts in fees over the coming years which will have a positive effect on the growth of his plan.

The exact overall fees paid will depend on the specific situation so may vary, but Chorus pride ourselves on fair, transparent and above all, value for money fees.

Beware the pension scammers

ACCORDING to the latest report on the current estate agent sector carried out by the BBVA bank, a significant increase has been registered in the demand for second homes in the Comunidad Valenciana... and the Alicante province in particular.

During the first six months of the year, buyers from other autonomous regions of Spain were the main contributors to the large increase in sales in the Valencian region which hit 26.2 per cent. This was well above

demand from locals totalling 18.6 per cent and 12.4 per cent from foreign buyers.

In total, 39,938 homes were sold in the Comunidad Valenciana between January and June which was also 16.5 per cent more than in the same period in 2016.

By province, Valencia grew by 21.9 per cent – with 15,179 sales – and in Alicante the volume rose by 20,143 and up 13.8 per cent more than last year.

The report also highlighted the importance of the power of international buyers that

accounts for around a third of the entire market in the Comunidad Valenciana and almost 50 per cent in the case of Alicante province.

Meanwhile, the price of housing continues to show a steady rise at an average 1.9 per cent compared to last year. A selection of the municipalities within the Alicante province has bucked the average trend with Calpe (10 per cent), Oliva (8 per cent), Denia (6.8 per cent) and Benidorm (6.4 per cent) leading the way.

THE PENSIONS REGULATOR (TPR) has launched new online messaging urging consumers to keep their eyes and ears open for pension scams.

by TPR via YouTube reminds viewers to watch out for scam sites that dress themselves up with anti-scam messaging to pose as legitimate businesses.

The second focuses on the need to hang up immediately on pension cold callers.

Mike Broomfield, TPR’s Head of Intelligence, said: “Scammers are always developing new ways to try to get their hands on people’s pensions so everyone needs to be on the lookout for potential traps.

“Calling pension scheme members out of the blue and creating impressive-looking websites to snare

potential prey are two methods they use to separate victims from their funds.

“We need consumers to help us find and stop scams. We can all use our eyes and ears to spot the scammers before they can profit at our expense.”

Spanish Flan

Preparation time – 20 minutes. Cooking time – 1 hour.

Ingredients

1 cup white sugar, 3 eggs, 1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk, 1 (12 fluid oz) can evaporated milk, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

method

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF (175ºC).

2. In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt sugar until liquid and golden in colour.

Carefully pour hot syrup into a 9 inch round glass baking dish, turning the dish to evenly coat the bottom and sides. Set aside.

3. In a large bowl, beat eggs. Beat in condensed milk, evaporated milk and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour egg mixture into baking dish. Cover with aluminium foil.

4. Bake in preheated oven 60 minutes. Let cool completely.

5. To serve, carefully invert on serving plate with edges when completely cool.

In a medium bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons olive oil, paprika, oregano, and salt and pepper. Stir in chicken pieces to coat. Cover, and refrigerate.

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large frying pan or paella pan over medium heat. Stir in garlic, red

pepper flakes, and rice. Cook, stirring, to coat rice with oil, about 3 minutes.

Stir in saffron threads, bay leaf, parsley, chicken stock, and lemon zest.

Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a separate skillet over

medium heat. Stir in marinated chicken and onion; cook 5 minutes.

Stir in bell pepper and sausage; cook 5 minutes. Stir in shrimp; cook, turning the shrimp, until both sides are pink. Spread rice mixture onto a serving tray. Top with meat and seafood mixture.

The retired professor is one of the main characters in Jávea Players’ forthcoming production of On Golden Pond – directed by Ron Skinner - which revolves around one family’s struggles.

Norman and Ethel’s (Rosemary Brown) prickly daughter Chelsea [Leigh Patterson] feels she ought to attend her father’s birthday this year, although to be honest, she really wants to leave her fiancé’s (Nigel Poole) son with them for a month. A month? Norman is horrified: he couldn’t even form a relationship with his own daughter so how’s he going to manage with a 13-year-old he doesn’t even know?

Billy (Luke Holmes) isn’t exactly bowled over by the idea of spending time with old fogies whom he’s never met before, on a remote lake, but surprisingly they hit it off. “So, what do you do when not in school?”

Where men suffer more than women You might know that some conditions affect more women than men, such as osteoporosis and breast cancer, but did you know that men are at far greater risk of dying from heart disease and cancer?

Heart disease Coronary heart disease (CHD) accounts for the deaths of nearly one-in-six men and one-in-10 women each year in the UK. According to the British Heart Foundation, there are currently 2.3 million people living with heart disease in the UK - more than 1.4 million men and 850,000 women â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and almost twice as many men as women suffer with a heart attack each year (110,000 men, compared to 65,000 women).

Parkinson's disease Parkinson's disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years. The three main symptoms of Parkinson's disease are: involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body, slow movement, and stiff and inflexible muscles.

Men are 1.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than women, although scientists aren't sure why.

Around 127,000 people in the UK have the condition. Most people with Parkinson's start to develop symptoms when they're over 50, although around 1 in 20 people with the condition first experience symptoms when they're under 40.

Skin Cancer Men are far more likely to die from malignant melanoma â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the most serious type of skin cancer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; compared to women. According to Cancer Research UK, death rates amongst men are 70 per cent higher than women, despite similar numbers being diagnosed with the disease each year.

Some 6,200 men develop melanoma each year in the UK and 1,300 die from the disease, yet only 900 of the 6,600 women who develop it die.

Cancer in general It's not just skin cancer that men are more likely to die from. A recent US study analysed 36 different types of tumours and blood cancers that affect both sexes and found that men have about a 1-in-2 chance of developing cancer at some point in their lives, compared with 1-in-3 chance for women.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES: Future health issues linked to diabetes WOMEN WHO have had gestational diabetes may be able to reduce or even eliminate their risk for cardiovascular disease by following a healthy lifestyle in the years after giving birth, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The researchers analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study II following health habits and medical history of more than 90,000 women from before pregnancy through middle age and the early senior years.

The study confirms the links between

gestational diabetes and cardiovascular disease found by other studies. It also provides some of the strongest evidence to date that cardiovascular disease after gestational diabetes isn’t inevitable for women who adopt a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise moderately and do not smoke.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes, or high blood sugar that occurs only during pregnancy. Although it often disappears after birth, many women who had the condition later develop

type 2 diabetes, usually by middle age.

Some studies have shown women who had gestational diabetes are also at risk for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, hardening of the arteries, heart attack and stroke.

In the current study, the researchers found that women who failed to adopt a healthy lifestyle in the wake of gestational diabetes had a 43 per cent higher risk of contracting or suffering from the conditions listed above.

In severe cases, skin damaged by athlete’s foot can become infected with bacteria. This can lead to cellulitis, which causes the skin to become red, hot and swollen.

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi growing and multiplying on the skin. The fungi that cause the infection thrive in warm, dark and moist places like feet.

You’re more likely to get athlete’s foot if you don’t keep your feet clean and dry; wear shoes that cause your feet to get hot and sweaty; walk around barefoot in places where fungal infections can spread easily, such as communal showers, locker rooms and gyms; share towels, socks and shoes with other people; have a weakened immune system; have certain other health conditions, such as diabetes.

Athlete’s foot is unlikely to get better on its own. It can usually be treated using antifungal treatments available from pharmacies without needing to see a GP, although not all types are suitable for children, older people, and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

If your rash is very sore and itchy, a pharmacist may recommend using a mild steroid cream to ease any discomfort, but this should only be used for a short period and in combination with antifungal treatment.

year and accounted for more than one in four new passenger car registrations. Ford’s SUV sales in Europe grew more than 30 per cent in 2016 and have risen by 27 per cent in the first eight months of 2017.

SUV growth means more jobs, too. By year-end, Ford is creating another 1,700 jobs at Ford Craiova, bringing the total workforce for both vehicle and engine production to 3,900. Ford’s total investment in its Romanian world-class facility now exceeds €1 billion since it took over the plant in March 2008.

Craiova is the sole source of EcoSport production for Europe (excluding Russia), supplying 56 markets on four continents. This includes markets as diverse as the United Kingdom, New Caledonia in Oceania, Turkmenistan in Central Asia, and South Africa.

Tennis league season kicks off with win for JITC

THE TENNIS league season is now under way with matches every week until April 2018.

In the first match JITC ‘A’ mixed team played away to Sol Park ‘B’ team in Moraira, and considering it was the first match of the season it was an exciting one.

Accompanied by perfect weather, JITC’s first mixed pair – Rolf Busse and Lesley Brookes took on Sol Park’s George & Louise Rose and won 6-2, 6-4 with Lesley hitting a terrific winner on match point.

Second pair Peter Jones & Julia Hall began slowly against Maggie Conyers & Tony Barfuss from Sol who played a succession of hardhitting strokes and in doing so won the first set 6-2. JITC tightened their defence in the second set and came out 6-4 winners to leave the tie

on 3 points to 1 point at the half way point.

Ladies and Men’s Doubles were next and the Sol Park ladies pairing of Louise Rose and Maggie Conyer were just too strong for JITC and won 6-2, 6-2. This meant that the whole result hinged on the Men’s Doubles, and initially Rolf Busse and Peter Jones from JITC were too strong and comfortably won the first set 6-2. However, the second set was much closer with both pairs having their chances to win the set. Rolf Busse played a superb service game to level the score at 6-6 taking the match to a tie break. Sol Park took an early lead and were 6-4 ahead needing just one point…but JITC won four points in a row to take the tie break 8-6 and win the match overall by 5 points to 3 points.

New playing surface for petanque fans BENIDORM will once again make the petanque court at the Foietes Sports Centre accessible. A request was made to the town hall by two organisations that previously used the court – Doble Amor and the Association of Disabled Persons in Benidrom (ASMIBE) – after it ran into a number of problems.

The town hall will now undertake a works programme to rebuild the current petanque court and removing some of the barriers that restricted previous use. Old furniture that has deteriorated will also be repainted or, where necessary if it’s beyond repair, be replaced. Work is planned to get underway this week.
