Iconic sand dunes and pine forest to be saved by tahnee Wright GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA Town Hall has announced an ambitious threeyear project to guarantee the future of its famous sand dunes. The plan is to implement a programme over a period of three years with the dunes seeing what has been described as “the greatest environmental project in a century” and to prevent
to disappearance of the pine forest. According to the environment councillor Silvestre García - who has described the plans as “exciting and ambitious” – the project will put an end to the slow and constant degradation of the dunes and the forest that has taken place over a number of years. He believes the work to be “vital and urgent” as failure to take action now will result in no pine forest at all within a
few years. Much of the blame has been aimed at Mother Nature with less rain and hotter conditions and so there has been less and less natural regeneration. García said: “It’s a restoration project where it’s going to be necessary to introduce a selection of plants that are compatible with the current habitat and climate and will survive and flourish in the extreme drought conditions being experienced.”
