by Tahnee Wright A group of teachers – mostly from Alfaz del pi – travelled to Tanzania where they set up a library with more than 3,000 books and an educational project for 1,831 students aged between three and 15.

The teachers travelled to Nungwi - a village at the northern end of the Tanzanian island of unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar – on the expedi-

tion arranged by not-for-profit ‘’Estrellas de Colores’ (Stars of Colours).

Estrellas de Colores was set up eight years ago by a group of volunteers and focuses on developing educational projects in impoverished countries across the world.

The not-for-profit turned its attention to Tanzania after spending a number of years setting up an educational project for children on a secluded island of Nicaragua,

called ometepe.

Estrellas de Colores president Juan Moreno met with l’Alfas del pi Mayor Vicente Arques last week to renew the not-for-profit’s collaboration agreement with the Town Hall and spoke of the most recent adventure.

Teachers Nuria Atienza, Nuria richarson, Maria Jose Sanchez, Jessica Martínez, Isabel perello and Lorena parra spent the summer in

Nungwi renovating two classrooms and a library at one of the islands’s schools, which lacks the economic resources to respond to the educational needs of the area.

More than 1,800 students will benefit from the works carried out by the Alfaz teachers and Estrellas de Colores’ work does not stop there.

The not-for-profit will take care of maintaining and improving the school, as it does in ometepe.

by Rose Holmes Teulada-Moraira council is constantly striving to improve the security and wellbeing of its residents. until last week, the municipality had defibrillators available at the auditorio, the espai la Senieta Moraira, both sports halls, the football ground and the Town Hall. Mayor Carlos linares and Councillor Nacim Benatsou were pleased to present five new defibrillators to the local police and to the civil defence unit last week.

The municipality also organised first aid training for its staff, for the volunteers working with the civil defence unit as well as for teachers working at the public schools - as soon, every school will also have two defibrillators available.

MediCardio led the training - which was both theoretical and practical – accredited by eVeS, PNrCP, SeMiCYuC as well as the american Heart association (aHa) and at the end of the day, participants received a ‘CardioProTeGido’ diploma.

Rain rain, go away LAST wEEkEND’S heavy rains flooded several Benidorm streets and caused several incidents.

Up to 38 litres of rain per square metre accumulated on some of the city’s busiest streets as firefighters rescued residents.

An elderly couple were trapped in their car in the Rincon de Loix area, a man was stuck in a lift in his apartment complex and a pizza delivery man was also trapped in his car.

Of the 38 litres of rain per square metre, 21.6 litres fell in just one hour between 2.00pm – 3.00pm on Saturday, AEMET said. Firefighters also attended to Benidorm’s sewage system, unclogging drains to prevent lakes forming in the streets.

by Tahnee Wright As the most Michelin starred chef in the world, Joel Robuchon has garnered no less than 32 throughout his career. he’s achieved accolades such as Meilleur Ouvrier de France and Chef of the Century.

Robuchon arrivied in teulada-Moraira last week to judge the sixth edition of the ‘Gourmet Race’ and received a warm welcome from teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares and sculptor Kiko torres, who presented the chef with a gift. he talked of his fondness for the municipality and the friends he has made there,

having visited several times over the years.

Robuchon praised the Marina Alta for its local produce and the quality of its raw materials and revealed that in his restaurants, he only uses olive oil from Alcoy (Masia el Altet). he also revealed that, when asked by the New York times where the best place to eat paella was, he recommended Restaurante Paco Gandia in Pinoso, Alicante, renowned for its rabbit and snail rice dish.

Robuchon even made a vindictive nod to Club Nautico Moraira, the venue for the Gourmet Race: "I am thinking about bringing my boat here."

by Fabio Delucci A SPANISH sailor was rescued from the sea eight hours after she fell into the water.

44-year-old Sonia Megod Zapata, from Valencia, was taking part in the 21st edition of the ‘Copa del Canal’ (Canal Cup) race, sailing from Denia to Ibiza, when she and three other crew-members fell overboard.

Sonia was participating as part of the ‘Natural Ladies’ sailing team, comprised solely of woman onboard the ‘Oceanica’ vessel.

She fell overboard shortly after the race had begun.

Juan Miguel Martinez, a crew member of the RCR Alicante Dignity 3 vessel, was also taking part in the race.

He told the Spanish press: “At around

12.00pm we were informed by radio that four crew members had fallen from a boat to the water.

“An hour after this first notice, the race committee told us that the race was suspended and asked us to help in the search."

The other three members of Sonia’s crew were rescued shortly after falling into the water but she was unable to be saved at the same time, with the rescue operation further complicated due to the weekend´s adverse weather conditions, with waves up to two metres in height.

After seven hours of searching for her, Maritime Rescue found her alive and responsive but showing symptoms of hypothermia.

She was airlifted from the scene and transferred to the Hospital de la Fe in Valencia

Sailor rescued 8 hours after falling overboard

AT LAST: Sonia was relieved to be rescued

Hiker falls four metres on the Montgo A 30-YEAR-OLD woman was airlifted to safety after falling some four metres whilst hiking on the Montgo with friends.

The rescue operation was carried out on Monday afternoon at a point difficult to access in the Cami de La Pedrera area.

The woman, who had been hiking with two friends, was stuck for just over two hours and firefighters were unable to rescue her on foot.

In a statement, firefighters said the rescue operation was "very complicated, since it was necessary to use the entire cable of the airlift.”

The woman was taken to the fire station in Denia where she was met by an ambulance and transferred to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud.

The extent of her injuries is not yet known but firefighters said she was conscious and able to move her legs: "which is lucky because she fell from quite a height.”

“Not cheap, but profitable” After reveAling that restricting traffic down to the granadella beach this summer and providing a free park and ride service cost €43,000, Javea council has said it will charge bus users next summer. the initiative cost the council €10,000 in personnel and €33,000 for the park and ride service, which operated every 1520 minutes between 10.00am – 6.00pm, with a second service running between 12.00pm – 2.00pm in August.

"Sustainability is not cheap, but it is profitable," said Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi, continuing to say the initiative "had been a success.".

He said that next summer, bus users will be charged: "We will fix a very affordable price, comparable to public transport. no one is going to stop going to the granadella for the sake of €1/ €1.50.”

Fined for not recycling

by Rose Holmes DENIA’S CouNCIllor of ENvIroNmENt Josep Crespo urged residents to increase their recycling efforts, explaining that if the European union target is not met, the town will face

a hefty fine. the councillor said: “We need to recycle more, if we do not, the council will be sanctioned and we will all pay for it."

Currently, each person in Denia generates on average 1.5 kilograms of

waste each day and only 22 per cent of this is recycled. the councillor said that a letter was received warning the council that the European union target of 50 per cent of waste being recycled by 2020 muSt be met. to encourage more residents to recy-

cle, the council has extended the mobile ecoparque opening hours, which will now be open from 2.00pm – 7.00pm on the Poligon industrial park.

New recycling bins have also been installed on Calles Elx and Pont, la Pedrera and the Plaza valgamedios.

THE 10 Benidorm local police officers hired at Easter to reinforce the city’s high summer season services have not had their contracts extended by the Generalitat.

Benidorm City Council is shocked that the officers’ contracts have not been extended, but is doing all it can to recruit the officers into some of the vacant positions at the local police station so the force “is not impacted by the departure of these officers” said Councillor of Public Safety Lorenzo Martinez.

The officers initially signed a six-month contract and were responsible exclusively for the surveillance of the city’s beaches. The intention was for the officers to remain in the force “until the end of the year to provide

the greatest possible number of officers to our local police, in light of the staff shortages they are currently experiencing.”

Martinez said that the officers could be recruited into some of the vacant positions at the local police station and provide a buffer, as regional lawmakers contemplate the mandatory retirement of police officers at age 60 in 2018.

He continued, making comparisons with a similar situation in 2011, when the Generalitat extended the contracts of the temporary local police officers: "We are stunned and we wonder how it is possible that there is no extension of these agents, especially with the situation in which we are faced with a large deficit of agents and with alert 4. It is a worse situation than that of 2011.”

Seriously injured A 61-YEAR-OLD man was seriously injured as he fell from a height of three metres whilst visiting Denia castle.

The family was walking with his family when he fell and was rushed to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud in an ambulance.

The incident comes just eight weeks after a Romanian woman and her eight-monthold daughter fell 50 metres from the castle onto the metal meshing which contains the rocks below.

City doing all it can to keep police officers

Double the money THE MARINA BAIXA has received subsidies amounting to €100,000 from the Valencian Tourism Agency to improve its facilities, double the amount it received last year.

Of the confirmed subsidies: • €13,000 will go to Callosa – to expand the toilets and the picnic area at Fonts d'Algar.

• €10,000 has been allocated to Benidorm – to improve the shaded area on Benidorm’s Levante beach, the most frequented by tourists.

• A further €10,000 will go to Benidorm – for the Foreign Tourist Service (SATE).

• €15,000 will go to Relleu – to improve its signposting and adapt its trails for hiking.

• €13,000 has been allocated to La Nucia - €7,000 to boost environmental tourism and €5,000 to promote fiestas.

• A further €20,000 will be split between Callosa and Finestrat – towards the search and rescue services.

Daesh recruiter on trial in Spain ABDALLAH LACHIRI, the young Moroccan woman who was arrested for allegedly working as an ‘information activist’ for Daesh went on trial at the Spanish National Court in Madrid this week.

Lachiri was arrested in Patraix, Valencia in June 2016 and faces 10 years in prison if found guilty for the terrorist ‘propaganda, selection and recruitment’ actions with which she is charged.

She is alleged to have carried out these actions via social media, where she had 13 profiles and around 22,000 followers.

Lachiri, who worked in a

supermarket on calle Corretgeria in the heart of Valencia, is accused of carrying out an "extraordinarily active" dissemination of messages.

Her role was allegedly to “facilitate the access of Daesh’s news between 2015 and 2016 and to disseminate it through comments on Facebook and Twitter,” according to the National Police's detailed investigation into her online activity.

Lachiri shared videos on YouTube of Daesh attacks in both Syria and France and amongst the material seized from her house was a notebook with handwritten phrases such as: “Take me to the jihad.”

Man murdered over suspected drugs debts

The aparthotel is located on Avenida de la Marina Baixa in Cala de Finestrat – just six kilometres from the centre of Benidorm and is particularly popular with British holidaymakers. The resort boasts a state-of-the-art water park that was completely renovated in 2016.

Slashing CO2 BENIDORM CITy COuNCIl has introduced 100 per cent renewable energy to all municipal buildings and facilities – an implementation which will avoid the emission of more than 6,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Mayor Toni Perez said that, although the cost of clean energy is higher than the cost of conventional electricity, “in just a few months this increase will be offset by the implementation of new energy saving measures.”

Perez continued to explain that the implementation of 100 per cent renewable energy "contributes to a more sustainable environment," and recalled the awards that Benidorm has won in recognition of its environmental efforts – most recently coming second in Spain out of 460 other cities at the Ministry of Environment’s seventh ‘Semana de la Movilidad Sostenible’ (Sustainable Mobility Week).

HOTEL sTaff and firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at the Magic Tropical Splash Water Park, Spa & Caribbean Resort Aparthotel in Cala de Finestrat.

Four fire engines and crews attended the scene accompanied by ambulances and medics to deal with any smokeinhalation casualties.

An eye-witness said: “We’re guessing it was a cigarette butt thrown onto a straw roof. There were flames and a lot of smoke but the hotel staff were quick to act.”

HANDS UP: One of the men was arrested but the other managed to escape

by Tahnee Wright Two men killed another in a house in el Campello over debts related to drugs.

The incident occurred on monday morning in an urbanisation in the town 20 minutes from Alicante city.

After being notified of a fight with two wounded, the Information and emergency Coordination Center (CICU) dispatched two ambulances to the scene, along with the Guardia Civil and the local police.

The Guardia Civil were the first to

arrive at the scene where they found the victim, who had suffered several stab wounds to the throat and several blows to the face, with a plastic bag tied over his head. medics arrived and estimated the victim - who was pronounced dead at the scene – to be of around 40 years of age.

The two men had fled the scene and the Guardia Civil managed to track them both down. one of them was arrested but the other managed to escape.

The detainee – of around 30 years of age - was taken to the University

Hospital San Juan de Alicante, where he was treated for a stab wound to the leg before being sent straight to the cells at the Guardia Civil headquarters in the city.

Although the investigation had just begun at the time of printing, the Guardia Civil is certain the murder was carried out over debts related to drugs.

The results of the autopsy from the Institute of Legal medicine of Alicante - which are yet to be confirmed - will determine as to whether the young man died of stab wounds or suffocation.

by Tahnee Wright Four people were arrested for defrauding a Valencian company of €83,000 after hacking its computer system.

Agents of the Alicante Guardia Civil’s Technological Investigation Team (eDITe) investigated the case, involving a company headquartered in Banyeres de Mariola.

They found that two Nigerian men had hacked the company’s computer system to obtain a list of its clients, before posing as the Ceo with a fake email address almost identical to his real one and emailing the accounts department, authorising payments to clients but providing different bank account information.

The bank account information provided by the Nigerian men posing as the Ceo was not their own, but instead belonged to a 38-

year-old Colombian resident in Valencia and a 52-year-old Spaniard living in el Alamo (Madrid).

The Nigerian men used the Colombian and the Spaniard as mules, paying them a small percentage of the funds received from the company.

When arrested, the men explained that the Nigerian men had persuaded them to open the bank accounts as they themselves were having problems with the Treasury and they needed to collect the money.

As soon as money was transferred in the mules’ accounts, the Nigerian men ordered them to withdraw it immediately and bring it to them in person.

The two Nigerian men, 42 and 50 years old and residents of Alcorcon and Aranjuez are charged with felony bank fraud to the sum of €83,690.

MAYORESS Of Muro Jacqueline Cerda and Councillor of Public Safety Carolina Ivanez have publicly apologised to the local police officers they shared crossed words with while they were sanctioning badly parked cars recently.

In a statement, the mayoress and the councillor write: “The tension that has been experienced in Muro of late at the hands of the local police was the trigger for a strained situation and an unfortunate verbal exchange.”

The situation occurred as the municipality celebrated its gastronomic fair, which increased the traffic in the area. Nevertheless, the mayoress and the councillor reiterate their apologies, which extend to the entire police force.

Distracted driver dies

A TRAIN DRIVER died when he was hit by a commuter train at Valencia-Fuente San Luis station. The driver of the commuter train stopped after feeling the heavy blow and exited the car to ascertain what had happened.

As he stepped down on to

the tracks, he found the lifeless body of the train driver and called emergency services.

Commuters were told to transfer onto another train and the traffic between Valencia and Castellon continued as station officials waited for the police and the coroner to arrive.

The corpse was examined by the police before being transferred to the Instituto de Medicinal Legal (Institute of Medicinal Law) in Valencia.

Investigations continue but it is believed the train driver was distracted as he crossed the tracks.

Ready to go

by Fabio Delucci Formalities are in place for the expansion works of Hospital marina Baixa in Villajoyosa to begin.

Villajoyosa mayor andreu Verdu presented the plans this week and confirmed that the Council will now hand the appropriated plots over to the Consell to begin works. the Council appropriated three plots of land covering almost 25,000 square metres, to enable the expansion works to take place. the plots were purchased last year from three farmers at a cost of €253,444.37. the farmers have since come together to query the price paid for the

plots and appeal to the Court of expropriation. the Court will deliver a verdict within the next few weeks, at which point the Council may be told to cough up more cash if the valuations are found to have been out. the mayor explained that the appeal does not affect the works, acknowledging that marina Baixa residents have “been waiting too long for this much-needed infrastructure in the region.”

Because of delays “outside the town Hall’s control”, budgets have had to be reallocated and works are expected to begin in the second half of next year with an execution time of 18 months, works are expected to complete in 2020.

Everyone out

A 22-storey apartment block in Calpe was evacuated as smoke started to billow from room in the basement. residents of the block on Avenida rosa de los Vientos, on the Fossa de Calp beach rushed from the building, suspecting a fire as smoke started coming from the water meter room.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find that there was no fire, but they did find a bottle of ammonia on the floor. The liquid in the ammonia had mixed with the chlorine in the water and a chemical reaction had occurred, which had generated the smoke.

Drug dealing family arrested

A COUPLE and their son were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking as National Police officers raided their Gandia home to find heroin, marijuana and materials for distribution.

The investigation began in June when the National Police received a tip off via

www.policia.es regarding drugs being sold from a house in Gandia.

Officers located the house and observed numerous visitors who would remain inside for extended periods of time.

When officers raided the house, they found 27

grams of heroin and 15 grams of marijuana along with scales, bags and wire.

It appeared that ‘customers’ would purchase the drugs and consume them inside the house with the family.

The three detainees are charged with crimes against public health.

Diversity should not and need not, lead to conflict, whose consequences would obviously be bad for the Catalans, for Spain and for the whole of Europe.”

Tusk, who noted his own ethnic minority background and personal experience of being hit by police batons as an antiCommunist activist in the 1980s, said he had also urged Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to “look for a solution to the problem without the use of force”.

POLICE havE launched an appeal to find out who shot an endangered Iberian lynx at close-range in Jaen province, Andalucia, Spain.

Agents from Seprona, the Guardia Civil´s animal protection unit, have turned to social media to further their investigation after confirming that the animal’s death was no accident.

The Guardia Civil posted on Twitter: "Do you know who shot a lynx in Sierra Morena?”

by Rose Holmes A boAt was found abandoned in Javea’s Cova tallada on tuesday and two immigrants of Arab origin were later arrested. the detainees – two men aged 30 and 31 – were treated by a Red Cross ambulance, with a team leader and a translator. both appeared to be in stable health.

the Red Cross activated a red-alert for the possible arrival of more boats to the Marina Alta shores.

An almost identical boat was found abandoned in Alicante’s Cabo de las Huertas on Wednesday morning. the police initiated a search for six immigrants after receiving a tip-off from a neighbour who saw them running from the boat across the beach. one of the immigrants was found and arrested and the Red Cross were

on hand again to offer medical assistance. the search continues for the remaining five. the immigrants will be passed to the National Police who will organise their repatriation.

Similar events occurred earlier this year when 3 boats were found abandoned on beaches in Moraira, Calpe and Santa Pola within the space of 24 hours.

by Rose Holmes For the past three years, Katie Louise of ‘Sell Your Stuff Spain’ has organised a Christmas shoebox appeal for the children at Gandia Preventorio Children’s home. the Preventorio receives no government funding and operates entirely thanks to grants and donations.

Katie said: “I have been with donations and food before and the children always touch my heart, they have nothing but they are all still smiling and that's down to the volunteers! they do a grand job!” recently, Katie asked one of the volunteers at the Preventorio for an up to date list of residents – the children’s names, genders and ages so she could organise the Christmas shoebox appeal once again. the volunteer replied to say that the Preventorio is struggling so much, with next to

no funds left, that as it stands, they cannot afford to pay for fuel to heat the home or to cook for the children, let alone everything else.

Katie asked how she could help and was told that the Preventorio needs nearly €10,000 just to get them through the next few months – but the fuel and a dental bill for one of the children amounts to €5,000 alone.

Katie has pledged to raise the €5,000 through fundraising events and donations before December 1 and has been overwhelmed by people’s generosity already this week.

Congratulations, CCC! The German ‘CreaTiv Club Calpe’ has been established on the Costa blanca for some 35 years and has been organising Calpe’s ‘Oktoberfest’ since 1988, becoming one of the most important clubs outside of Germany.

This week, the club was awarded the Jaume pastor i Fluixa prize by Calpe Town hall. presenting the award, Calpe mayor Cesar Sanchez said that this shows that Calpe is a municipality “without borders”, where more than 100 nationalities live in harmony.

Celebrating the season

by Tahnee Wright THE ‘AuTumn Colours’ exhibition with works from the students of the Polytechnic university of Valencia (uPV) was inaugurated last week in Benidorm’s Espai d’Art in the Town Hall.

Councillor of Culture Ana Pellicer opened the exhibition, which can be

visited until Friday october 27 and showcases a variety of works – with paintings, photography, drawing and engraving.

Pellicer explained that the exhibition is just one of the events planned since the city signed a cultural agreement with the uPV and thanked uPV’s Vice-Dean of Culture and research Teresa Chafer for organising it.

MeMbers of Javea Connect have pulled together to help the plight of AProP. AProP (Protectora d'animals de Pego) is an entirely volunteer-run cats and dogs shelter amongst the orange groves in Pego. The shelter, set over 2,750 square metres, is home to some 40 dogs and over 40 cats, with these figures rising at an alarming rate.

AProP was previously LAPs and was taken over in March 2016 by a group of multi-national volunteers committed to the welfare of impoverished and abandoned animals. At AProP, neglected cats and dogs are taken in, provided with any veterinary care they might need and given hope for a better day.

The shelter is in desperate need of as much help as it can get as it prepares for the upcoming winter months.

FIGURES RElEaSEd by Calpe’s department of Tourism earlier this week show the city experienced a six per cent occupancy increase this summer in comparison to last summer.

The study found that hotel occupancy in July rose from 85.09 per cent in 2016 to 87.6 per cent in 2017 and in august, from 92.91 per cent in 2016 to 94.91 per cent in 2017. as for apartment rentals, 22,567 visitors were regis-

tered in July – 22 per cent more than 2016 and 21,221 visitors were registered in august, 9 per cent more than 2017.

The city puts the increase down to the opening of the new Suitopia - Sol y Mar Suites Hotel and the regularisation of apartment rentals – the number of apartment rentals growing 122 per cent in July and 171 per cent in august.

Jan Van Parijs, who heads up the department of Tourism, said that the increase "is

very positive for Calpe’s economy as it supposes hundreds more jobs each month.”

On the other hand, visits to the tourist office dropped by 17 per cent in July and by 29 per cent in august, attributed to the high numbers of returning tourists who already know their way around the city and the greater use of smart technology. Ninety six percent of the tourists who visited the tourist office intend on returning to Calpe and 81 per cent of them rated the city 9 or 10 out of 10.

‘More Parcent’ in October

‘More Parcent’ will open with the inauguration of an art exhibition by Spanish female artists ´’Cuatro mujeres de paleta y pincel’ on the

Friday at the musical building from 7.30pm.

On the Saturday and the Sunday, there will be an art, craft and food fair held in the village square, with craft stalls and free workshops and book stalls including poetry from the Benissa Stanza poetry group.

Workshops for children followed by traditional hot chocolate and storytelling with take place from 4.00pm on both the Saturday

and the Sunday.

Artesan food stalls will offer locally made wine, olive oil, cakes and pastries, cheese, sausages, honey and artesan coffees.

On the Sunday at lunchtime, there will be a performance of a Muixeranga, the Valencian folk tradition of forming human towers.

There will be a bar and food stall in the square selling barbeque sausages for breakfast

and traditional dishes such as paella for lunch.

For the youngsters (and young at heart!) the Saturday night will feature a concert of Valencian rock.

Jacqueline Cotterill - Parcent’s Deputy Mayor and all at the Town Hall invite everyone to visit and enjoy the village, sample its bars and restaurants, walk in its stunning countryside and join in the weekend’s festivities.

Local charity gives to school

by Tahnee Wright The AsociAcion BeneficA de TeulAdA recently purchased a climbing frame for the students at the ceiP sant Vicent ferrer school in Teulada. last Wednesday Marcia, Pat and Julia visited the school to present the climbing frame to the directora. The students were already making good use of the equipment and one or two of them were more than delighted to demonstrate their expertise.

The Asociacion Benefica de Teulada have helped many members of the community over the years – firstly helping to finance the Red cross ambulances and equipment before purchasing two ambulances administered under the umbrella of The Proteccion civil.

The charity has since helped Teulada-Moraira Alzheimer’s society (AfA), again, purchasing a much-needed new vehicle and more recently, a new television.

The Asociacion Benefica de Teulada raises money from

fundraising events and from their charity shop on Teulada’s Avenida Mediterraneo, just 100 metres from the Moraira roundabout.

BENITACHELL’S CALA DEL MORAIG will set the scene for short film ‘Extranjero’ (Foreigner) – highlighting the difficulties faced by refugees.

The film counts amongst its actors the Spanish Manolo Solo, who has appeared in more than 90 films since 1986.

Solo won the 2016 Goya Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in ‘The Fury of a Patient Man’.

The short film tells the story of a young Englishman who becomes disoriented and loses his boat while snorkelling and has a subplot of social denunciation.

"With this film, we want the viewer to rethink the concept of being a foreigner and imagine how a refugee feels when they try to reach the shore," said Director Carlos Violade Guerrero.

Masons raise money for children's oncology department LocaL Freemasons Lodge, Javea 40, held a Quiz night recently which was combined with an Indian meal. nearly 40 members of Javea 40 along with their wives and guests spent a very enjoyable evening at the curry Palace in Javea Port.

The quiz questions were posed by local quizmasters, Theresa and colin.

While the evening was originally arranged as a simple social get together, allowing members to catch up after their summer break, €160 was raised from donations from the masons

and guests.

This will make a creditable addition to the Lodge's charity fund raising efforts, which this year are in aid of the children's oncology department at La Fe Hospital in Valencia. at the end of the evening, Javea 40's Worshipful master, WBro matthew James, presented the small cash prize to the captain of the winning team, WBro Bob Watkins.

Skiing on the Montgo No oNe would have imagined, until now, that you could practice cross-country skiing on the Montgo, but an avid roller-skier has proved anything is possible.

The man has been spotted training on the Les Planes road towards the Cap de Sant Antoni lighthouse, where little traffic passes and he can ‘ski’ without danger.

Roller skiing is an offsnow equivalent to crosscountry skiing. Roller skis have wheels on their ends and are used on tarmac to emulate crosscountry skiing. The skiing techniques used are

The Costa del Sol Adventures Costa lay in the dirt and heard a scratching nearby. Was it a rat or a cockroach?

Which would he prefer?

What are you doing lying on the floor in a locked cemetery? He asked himself.

The full moon shone bright as bleached bone. The night was cloudless, starless and silent. Costa didn´t know what day it was: maybe Sunday, from the traffic?

Days didn´t happen to him like they did to other people. Time didn’t work in the same way.

He needed to write his memoirs, settle down, live a normal life.

He heard a grinding squeal from the keyhole in the gate and, a second later, the roar and chug of bike being fired up. Off went the groundsman for his dinner.

Costa sat up and brushed himself off. The air was sweet with the sickly smell of dying flowers. He didn’t like cut flowers: sometimes thought he could hear them screaming.

Death was not so bad, Costa thought. It was dying that was awful.

He quickly found the tomb he´d seen the woman in front of. My god, that woman. Burnt into his mind. Never spoken to her but felt he knew her. Why had he come back?

Costa read the inscription and the dates on the tomb. Who was this? The woman´s father? Brother? She´d looked - what? - maybe mid-thirties, forties? Hard to tell.

Costa took out the fake, stolen ring and held it up to the light. He heard a bestial snuffle from behind his back and turned to see a man mountain eclipsing the moon.

“Hey! There you are,” Costa managed before the monster´s knuckle-duster collided with his cheek.

In a somewhat lame 2013 comedy called "The Internship" two watch salesmen are made redundant. Their boss tells them that fewer and fewer people nowadays are buying watches, and, to make his point, asks a secretary what the time is. She instantly reaches for her phone to check.

“Hmmm,” I thought. “The boss has a point.” But is the wristwatch really a thing of the past? nope, mainly because companies are now applying so many ingenious bells and whistles to them that I reckon they will be in demand for many years to come.

Here I must confess a weakness for the things. I see one I like, and I buy it. But when apple introduced its first Smartwatch in 2015 I wasn’t tempted, despite being a long-time user of apple products.

The look of it just didn’t appeal, it was mega-expensive and I could not see it enriching my life in any way whatsoever.

Then, at the weekend I damaged my favourite watch, a simple timekeeper made by Skagen of Denmark. “Hey-ho,” I said, “I’ve got lots more I can use while this one gets repaired.”

Then I discovered that, of the five other watches I own, not one worked. The batteries were all dead.

So I decided the time had come to look at watches that had rechargeable batteries. Google took me to numerous sites that gushed over the Samsung smartwatch, most declaring it the best that money can buy.

Samsung, incidentally, was actually

the first to develop a watch capable of telecommunications back in 1999. The SPH-WP10 anycall featured a monochrome LCD screen and was capable of 90 minutes of talk time with its integrated speaker and microphone.

It spectacularly flopped probably because it was positively one of the ugliest devices ever created. nevertheless, someone was able to sell a non-functioning one on eBay in 2015 for $500.00.

The company gave up its smartwatch

efforts soon after but once it recognised the potential of the industry a few years back, it quickly began investing heavily in the field once more.

So last Saturday, I acquired the Samsung S3 classic, and five hours later more or less worked out how to operate it. What, to my mind, gives it its biggest “wow” factor is the enormous number of face designs you can download for it, including a grotesque one that that only imbeciles and would find appeal-

ing. It features Trump’s name and declares “make america great!”

The following day, my new gadget almost gave me heart failure when it suddenly sprang into life. It buzzed. It flashed. It jangled. It told me I had an incoming call from the UK. To my utter amazement I found myself having a crystal clear conversation via my watch to a woman who rang me to say that she’d just found my passport.

Back in May, I wrote a piece in RTn about having my passport knocked out of my hand at easyJet’s baggage checkin area at Gatwick airport by an overzealous assistant who thought I was too frail or too stupid to put my own bag on the conveyor belt.

She snatched it out my right hand, and in doing so knocked my passport of my left. It flew onto the belt, and despite a search lasting hours no one could find it. So I missed my flight back to Spain, and had to spend a week marooned in the UK while I waited for a new passport to be issued. I’m still battling to get compensation.

The woman who called me said she’d just returned from a holiday in Greece and discovered my passport in an outer zip-up section of her case, one she barely ever uses. But something made her check it when she returned to London.

I now have two mysteries to solve: how my passport got into a stranger’s suitcase, and how my watch, which I hadn’t knowingly connected to my cellphone, managed to pick up the call.

using pen and post to solicit brochures and information, which would arrive weeks or months later. drawing on this information he penned many of the greatest spies, occult and conspiracy novels ever written. As an author and ghost-writer I stand in awe of the efforts of those who scratched with their pens great classics that 200 years later continue to inspire. It must have taken the authors many years to progress from blank page to publishing.

Today, in a few minutes spent at the keyboard, I can avail myself of much more detailed information from many sources. Last year, I had it in mind to write a book about the european mercenaries drawn into a score of African conflicts as result of Premier Harold MacMillan’s ‘Winds of Change’.

Making a start on The Last Gladiators the book was selling worldwide within 10 days. on another occasion, but never to be repeated, I wrote and published from scratch two books in one month. yes, it was good going but I now enjoy internet aids and online publishing well beyond the wildest dreams of past writers.

I enjoyed reaching a milestone birthday; many don’t make it this far. My family was gathered around me, which was good as I would otherwise have had much to reflect upon. My classmates lived a life that later generations can only read about. our generation was born to parents born before the House of Windsor (1917). It is a sobering thought that for all the 1920s class division and the endemic poverty people were far better educated and self-sufficient than they are today. I recall a daily Telegraph study that revealed that adolescents of edwardian england were far better educated than were 1980s university students and it is far worse today.

We change too: As an eight-year old I was totally absorbed by jack London’s novel, White Fang. years later I picked up a copy and I was taken aback at the profound scholarship of the story. My working class mother was born in 1911. Before adolescence and highly numerate she could recite a wealth of english poetry and narrate from heart entire passages from the great english classics.

My youthful appetite for dennis Wheatley (1897 – 1977) novels was insatiable. The novelist’s spy and occult mysteries inspired Ian Fleming’s james Bond series.

Wheatley’s novels offered detailed descriptions of the world’s grandest hotels and their clients in such a way that he must surely have stayed as a guest. His millions of fans couldn’t understand was how he could possibly have such detailed knowledge of such places and know world personalities.

You can’t go anywhere it seems, without bumping into someone you know.

Just last week whilst taking a short break away from a stressful life in Villamartin, I was innocently strolling through the delightful main square in Mojacar Pueblo in almeria, having left my good friend Walt dozing on a bench in the sunshine with the other local pensionistas, when a voice boomed out: ‘My God, colin, what are you doing here?’

I was also conscious of another quieter remark from one of the group in question: ‘there goes the neighbourhood’, but I chose to ignore such immaturity.

It turned out to be four acquaintances who reside in Quesada, and who just happened to be booked into a hotel adjacent to the one we were staying in at the nearby playa it transpired.

What a coincidence and what are the chances of that happening we all agreed noisily and at some length.

My snoozing friend had awoken in the meantime and seeing that the flatulent bloke next to him was definitely not his erstwhile companion, had scanned around, spotted me,

and made his way over to join us.

‘I don’t believe it’ he uttered, sounding a lot like a poor man’s Victor Meldrew. ‘What are you lot doing here? and the whole verbal performance of a few moments before was repeated. at this point, Walt’s wife Eileen and the Princess who had been occupied for an hour doing their level best to boost the local economy by blitzing the jewellery, shoe and handbag establishments to within an inch of their lives, had now emerged from the highly original and artfully named Just Shoes. after a few seconds adjusting to the unaccustomed light and the absence of cash registers, they focused on us waving and gesturing for them to join us. there were squeals of delight (or was it dismay) as they recognised our new found companions, and once again the air was abuzz with more declarations of surprise and astonishment and many cor blimey’s, until the whole gamut of incredulous exclamations about coincidences was exhausted.

the following day on our way home, we decided to stop off for a browse and a coffee in the town of Vera.

We were just discussing why there should be so many boarded up shops and closed business premises,

when I heard a familiar voice from a past life in England at a nearby table.

The 1905 massacre had sparked a series of crippling strikes, after the bloodshed Czar Nicholas promised the formation of a series of representative assemblies, or Dumas, to work toward reforms.

In August 1914 Russia entered into the first World War in support of the serbs and their French and British allies. Their involvement in the war would soon prove disastrous for the Russia militarily.

Imperial Russia was no match for an industrialised Germany, and Russian casualties were greater than those sustained by any nation in any previous war. Food and fuel shortages continued to plagued Russia as inflation mounted.

The economy was hopelessly disrupted by the costly war effort.

Czar Nicholas left the Russian capital of Petrograd (st. Petersburg) in 1915 to take command of the Russian Army.

(Russia had renamed the imperial city in 1914, because the name “st. Petersburg” had sounded too German.)

In her husband’s absence, Czarina Alexandra—an unpopular woman of German ancestry—began firing elected officials. During this time, her controversial advisor, a so called mystic Monk, Grigori Rasputin increased his influence over Russian politics and the Romanov family.

Russian Nobles eager to end Rasputin’s influence murdered him on December 30, 1916. By then, most Russians had lost faith in the failed leadership of the Czar. Government corruption was rampant, the Russian economy remained backward and Nicholas repeatedly dissolved the Duma, the toothless Russian parliament established after the 1905 revolution opposed his will.

Moderates soon joined Russian radical elements in calling for an overthrow of the hapless czar.

Trotsky that culminated in Russian workers protesting against the monarchy led to the bloody sunday massacre of 1905. Hundreds of unarmed protesters were killed or wounded by the czar’s troops in the square outside the Czars winter Palace in st Petersburg on January 22nd, Much of Western Europe viewed Russia as an undeveloped, backwards society. The Russian Empire practiced serfdom—a form of feudalism in which landless peasants were forced to serve the land-owning nobility well into the nineteenth century, this practice had disappeared in most of Western Europe by the end of the Middle Ages, it was only after that Russia abolished serfdom.

The emancipation of serfs would influence the events leading up to the next Revolution by giving peasants more freedom to organize.

Russia had industrialized much later than other countries. When it finally did, around the turn of the 20th century, it brought with it immense social and political changes. Between 1890 and 1910, the population of major Russian cities such as st. Petersburg and Moscow nearly doubled, resulting in overcrowding with people living in destitute conditions.

gan on March 8, 1917 (February 23 on the Julian calendar). Demonstrators clamouring for bread took to the streets of Petrograd. supported by huge crowds of striking industrial workers, the protesters clashed with police but refused to leave the streets.

On March 11th, the troops of the Petrograd army garrison were called out to quell the uprising. In some encounters, the regiments opened fire, killing demonstrators, but the protesters kept to the streets and the troops began to waver.

The Duma formed a provisional government on March 12th. A few days later, Czar Nicholas abdicated the throne, ending centuries of Russian Romanov rule, the leaders of the provisional government, including young Russian lawyer Alexander Kerensky, established a liberal program of rights such as freedom of speech, equality before the law, and the right of unions to organize and strike. They opposed violent social revolution. As minister of war, Kerensky continued the Russian war effort, even though Russian involvement in World War I was enormously unpopular. This further exacerbated Russia’s food supply problems. Unrest continued to grow as peasants looted farms and food riots erupted in the cities.

First and second persons singular Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

In an earlier article we took a step forward by changing some of our important “first person” verb forms into “second person” verb forms, in other words to talk about “you” as well as “I”. We have limited ourselves to just six examples so far, because these are ones that give us a chance to building more interesting sentences by combining them with the infinitive or other verbs to express our needs, desire, intentions and obligations: quieres (you want), vas a (you are going to) necesitas (you need), puedes (you can), tienes que (you have to) te gusta (you like).

We can now make statements about the person we are addressing, for example “Vas a aprender mucho español con Jane” (“You’re going to learn a lot of Spanish with Jane” - just thought I’d slip that one in), or “Puedes dormir más tarde” (“You can sleep later” - I’ll leave you to invent your own context for that one). We could also give someone information in the negative, for example “No tienes que volver mañana” (You don’t have to go back (or come back) tomorrow”.)

Perhaps the second person is used most frequently however to form questions. We can think of lots, using the words we have learnt so far. Here are some questions which perhaps you would like to answer yourself. You can send me the answers if you wish.

The second person or “you” form that I have just demonstrated, is actually a form we use when we are being friendly or familiar with the person we are addressing. I prefer to teach this form first so that students can address each other in a friendly way and to open up the possibility of chatting to neigh-

bours or getting a bit further in a conversation than ordering a beer.

However, a lot of people learn a slightly different form first, that is the more formal way of addressing “you”.

The actual words for “you” (which don’t necessarily come into the sentence) are tú when we are being familiar and usted when we are being more formal. I try to encourage people not to get over-

money We need to ensure this cannot happen again I’ve been battling with myself over the last few days as to whether to write this article, and indeed what to say. As many of you will have heard by now, one of the largest financial advisory companies in our region lost their licence last week. This has left countless clients unsure as to their financial future.

It’s an incredibly sad and disturbing situation.

This year alone, I’ve had over 50 people ask me to look at plans set up by other financial advisors in the area. These are mainly investment portfolios held in QROPS and Spanish bonds. Every portfolio I looked at, without exception, contained funds that paid the advisor hidden fees to recommend them, which shows how prolific this problem is here in Spain.

Despite the number of times I see this, it still upsets and disturbs me. These are often small funds, with little track record, that cost 4 to 5 times more than other funds in their category, and under-perform the benchmark. The financial advisor has put their needs, i.e. being paid a hidden fee, before the needs of the client. This is absolutely unacceptable practice, and the sooner it becomes illegal in Spain, the better.

Those of you who have been reading my articles or attending my seminars over the last few years will know that I’ve been warning against certain practises used here in Spain, by a large number of financial advisors, that would be illegal in the UK. It was just these practises that lead to a financial advisory company causing large losses for many of their clients, and ultimately losing their licence. All I can do is to continue with the same message, because what happened last week was entirely preventable.

Sadly, what happens when you have an industry acting like this, is that more and more people are put into low quality investments, and sooner or later, we have a situation like we had last week.

In the UK, it is illegal for financial advisors to offer funds or structured products that pay an upfront or ongoing hidden fee to the advisor.

These rules prevent financial advisors from being biased towards a particular investment, ensuring that only the very best, high quality funds are recommended.

For me I’d expect to see an investment portfolio full of UK based, FCA regulated funds, which can’t use these illegal practises. Household names like Fidelity, Investec, Rathbones, The Prudential, Fundsmith, Vanguard etc.

I firmly believe that educating the public is the only way to prevent what happened last week from happening again. Thousands of you will be holding such investments already, without even knowing, or about to sign paperwork that will unwittingly tie you into such a plan. You can invest safely and securely in Spain, and you should expect access to the same quality of financial advice as you would receive in the UK. If you, a friend or family member,

Catalan residents flock to other regions to open accounts A nUMbeR OF Catalan residents were shifting their bank accounts to branches and lenders in other regions of Spain on Monday, hoping to safeguard their savings should Catalonia declare independence and fall out of the European Union.

In Fraga, a rural town just across the border in neighbouring Aragon, dozens bbvA andCaixabankclients arrived early in the morning and queued for hours to open accounts.

The Catalan parliament may unilaterally declare independence as soon as Tuesday following the banned referendum last Monday October 1, which a majority of voters boycotted but that Catalan leaders say produced an “overwhelming majority for secession”.

Such a move would not have any immediate legal effect because it would be blocked by Spain’s constitutional court.

But an eventual break from Spain would leave Catalonia outside the European Union and the consumer protections it offers - a source of uncertainty and fear in the minds of some depositors.

Even if an independent Catalonia were to persist in using the euro, as non-EU members Kosovo and Montenegro do, its lenders would cease to be supervised by the European Central Bank.

Catalonia’s biggest banks, banco Sabadell and Caixabank moved their legal bases to other parts of Spain following the October 1 referendum, ensuring they would remain under ECB supervision even if the region does decide to secede.

Caixabank said last week it was transferring its legal base from barcelona to valencia to reassure clients in Catalonia that their deposits were safe.

Sabadell says it has moved its legal base to Alicante.

Carrot and pumpkin soup YOU CAN tell it’s autumn when the pumpkins arrive in the markets.

This cheerful, warming soup is so bright that you’ll need to wear your sunglasses when you eat it! Roast all the ingredients first, which really intensifies their flavour and gives the soup a natural sweetness.

• 500g fresh pumpkin • 300g medium carrots • A medium onion • Olive oil • Salt and black pepper • 300ml hot chicken or vegetable stock • Thick cream (optional) • Shredded orange peel (optional)

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2. Cut the pumpkin into 2.5cm wedges, removing the seeds but leaving the skin in tact.

Peel the carrots and cut in half lengthways.

Peel the onion and cut into wedges. Place the vegetables in a medium sized roasting tin and drizzle with a good slug of olive oil. Get your hands in and swirl everything around so all the vegetables have an even coating of oil. Adjust the pumpkin wedges so that only the skin is in contact with the bottom of the pan. Season generously with salt and pepper then place in the oven for

35 – 45 minutes until the vegetables are soft and begin to blacken at the edges.

3. Remove the vegetables from the oven and, when the pumpkin wedges are cool enough to handle, peel away the skin and discard.

Next you need to liquidize everything using a food processor or a hand held blender.

To do this, place all the roasted ingredients together with the hot stock and whiz until smooth. Add a little more stock if the soup seems too thick and pass through a fine sieve if you want a smoother texture 4. Pour the soup into a pan and reheat when ready to serve. Finish the soup with a blob of thick cream and a few shreds of orange rind.

Three skin sins to avoid for sensitive skin

1. AVOID: Switching things up. It can be frustrating when you start using a brand-new beauty product only for your skin to a) get worse or b) show absolutely zero results. But hopping from one routine to the next can actually aggravate sensitive skin even more. Switching your products too frequently also makes it very difficult to keep track of which products are actually helping, or which ingredients may be causing irritation.

Instead: Give it time. In general, it takes your skin around a month to adjust to

a new product, so be patient. However, if your skin feels irritated from the getgo, sniff out the culprit and stop using, sharpish.

2. AVOID: Skipping sun cream. It might feel like a chore when you're in a rush to leave the house in the morning, but irritable skin usually has a heightened sensitivity to the sun.

Instead: Never go below SPF 30 and look for sun creams that contain minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Ingredients • Honey – 1 tbsp • Pineapple juice – 1/4th cup • Gelatin powder – 2 tbsp Method 1. Mix the pineapple juice and honey well.

2. Heat the resulting mixture on a low flame. To this add the gelatin powder and stir well until the powder dissolves.

3. Stop heating and allow the mixture to cool for about 5 minutes.

4. Using a makeup brush, apply it on your face and let it sit for 5 minutes.

5. Now, apply another layer using the brush and let the whole mask dry completely.

6. Peel off gently and rinse your face with cold water.

3. AVOID: Overly complicated, 100-step routines. It's common sense that the simpler your beauty routine is, the less chance of something aggravating your skin.

Washing machine settings and cycles Different types of clothes require different settings to get everything completely clean, without problems occurring in the washing process, such as colour bleed.

Putting a coloured t-shirt in with white tops for a wash will cause the colour to seep into your pristine white fabrics! This is why it is a good idea to separate, then organise your dirty laundry into their setting categories, before “wash day”. It’ll minimise the risk of any damage or discolouration significantly.

It is also important to always check the care label on your clothes, before putting them into a wash.

The label will tell you which

washing machine settings to use, as well as how to dry the item afterwards.

Every washing machine will display their settings in a slightly different way. It’s always a good idea to check the manual to familiarise yourself with the available settings and cycles. But what do these settings mean and what is happening in each washing cycle?

• Normal – Used for cottons and coloured, mixed fabrics. This cycle uses warm water (30 or 40°C) to wash the clothes, followed by a cold-water rinse, with moderate agitation (machine spin) speeds.

• Permanent Press – Used for noiron clothes to keep the fabrics’ properties intact. It is similar to the Normal setting, but during the spin cycle the clothes are sprayed continually with water to keep them moist.

Other important settings: • Quick Rinse – Used for small, lightly soiled loads of clothing. This setting requires less water and can

save you energy.

• Pre-wash – Used for very dirty loads that require extensive cleaning. The pre-wash counts as an extra rinse cycle, with cold water that does not use detergent.

As well as the standard programs, your washing machine might come with a ‘load size’ setting: adjusting for small, medium or large washes will stop you from wasting water or energy and ensure that clothes in a large load end up as clean as those in a small load.

How to choose wallpaper for painting ThERE ARE various types of wallpapers that are suitable for painting.

Lining paper Lining paper helps to cover defects in the walls surface, providing a smooth and even finish for the wallpaper to be applied onto. If it is being used to line the walls in preperation for a finished paper, the lengths are hung horizontally, this prevents the joins in the lining paper from matching up with the joins in the wallpaper, which is hung vertically, thus preventing the paper peeling on the joins.

Lining paper comes in different grades from 400 to 1200 or more, the higher the number the better the quality and weight of the paper.

Wood chip This is a budget paper consisting of small pieces of wood sandwiched between two layers of paper. The thicker grades are easy to hang and provide good coverage for rough or uneven surfaces but it is not easy to trim to length and can prove difficult to remove. The thinner grades of wood chip are difficult to hang and are easily torn when wet.

Relief This paper is imprinted with a raised pattern and comes in lots of different designs. It is easy to hang and provides good coverage over rough surfaces, again

the thinner grades can tear when wet.

Textured vinyls These have a deep embossed surface pattern that makes them ideal for covering uneven walls, they are also hard wearing which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas such as hallways and children's bedrooms. Some have nice delicate hints of colour so don't need painting, but you still have the option to paint over if necessary. These are very easy to hang but are usually a little pricier than relief papers.

Embossed These are heavy duty wall coverings that will cover uneven surfaces and they are extremely hard wearing. Make sure you read the instructions before buying, as some have special requirements and techniques for hanging, also they are usually more expensive than most wallpapers.

Cleaning dogs ears’ MANy DOGS have ears that require regular cleaning. With this simple process cleaning your dog’s ears is easy enough to do at home provided you have the right equipment.

Why clean your dogs ears’?

Dogs have very long ear canals, usually from 5-10cm in length. They also take a rightangled bend, so foreign material often goes in, but is difficult to get out. If dogs get water in their ears during swimming, this water can pool down in the horizontal ear canal and increase the risk of infection. Ear infections are much more likely in a warm, moist, dark environment like an ear canal. If your dog swims, cleaning the ears out after swimming is a great routine to get into.

Dogs that have skin allergies and are prone to frequent ear infections will also benefit from regular ear cleaning. your vet can recommend how frequently to clean the ears, but as a general rule, not more than weekly and ideally at least monthly.

What you need ear cleaner cotton wool treats There are various types of ear cleaners, but the most important thing is that you only use a good quality dog ear cleaner. Never put olive oil, vinegar, shampoo or any other substance in a dog’s ear.

Gently hold the flap of the ear upright and fill the ear canal with ear cleaner. Direct the tube vertically downwards.

Keep a hold of the ear and move your hand down to where the ear meets the head.

Massage at the base of the ear, aiming to mix the ear cleaner around within the ear canal. you should get a great squelchy noise if you are doing this correctly.

After you have massaged the ear for 20 seconds, stand back and let go of the ear. your dog should now vigorously shake his head.

Grab some cotton wool and use it to wipe out the folds at the opening of the ear canal until it looks pretty clean.

Give your dog a treat and repeat with the other ear.

The key with ear cleaning is to use a large amount of ear cleaner. As the ear canals are quite long, the wiping step is not to get all the ear discharge out. The idea is that when you massage, you will be breaking up the discharge lining the inside of the ear canal, so that it forms a solution with the ear cleaner. your pet can then shake the liquid out.

Most dogs will come to like ear cleaning, so long as their ears are comfortable. This is the one place that dogs can’t scratch themselves, so most will absolutely love it. With lots of treats and encouragement, ear cleaning can become a part of your regular hygiene routine.

Peugeot joins vehicle scrappage scheme to upgrade to vehicles with the latest safety features and preventative technology – such as Peugeot’s autonomous Active City Brake system, lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control and intelligent speed limit recognition.

DIESEL DROP: Numbers fall by over 150,000

Diesel car sales dropping Diesel’s market share in the EU-15 fell from 50.2 per cent to 46.3 per cent of new car registrations in the first half of 2017.

In absolute numbers, 152,323 less diesel cars were sold. This drop was offset by an increase in the sale of petrol vehicles. Auto makers caution that this shift to petrol engines with higher CO2 values will pose additional challenges to meeting future CO2 reduction targets.

For the first time since 2009, petrol

vehicles have overtaken diesel to become the most sold car type in the EU-15. Petrol vehicles now account for 48.5% of new passenger car sales, up from 45.8 per cent a year ago, which translates into 328,615 extra petrol cars sold year-on-year.

Electrically-chargeable vehicles accounted for 1.3 per cent of total car sales (a market share which remains stable), hybrids for 2.6 per cent, and cars powered by propane or natural gas for 1.3 per cent.

“Alternative powertrains will undoubtedly play an increasing role in the transport mix, and all European manufacturers are investing heavily in them,” stated ACEA Secretary General Erik Jonnaert. “To this end, more needs to be done to encourage consumers to buy alternatively-powered vehicles, for instance by putting in place the right incentives and deploying recharging infrastructure across the EU.” “In the meantime, however, as diesel cars

emit significantly less CO2 than equivalent petrol-powered vehicles, they will have to be part of the gradual transition to low-carbon vehicles, acting as a ‘bridge’ technology.”
