by Lynn Whittaker THE AREA of the Vega Baja will soon have a new and updated service thanks to a unique cooperation.

Taxi drivers from nine different municipalities have joined forces to improve their service, increase coverage and reduce the amount of waiting time for passengers.

In total, there will be 50 taxis made up from Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas, Rafal, Jacarilla, BenejĂşzar, Bigastro, Los Montesinos and Benferri and will get rid of existing rules that prevent taxi drivers picking up passengers from anywhere outside of his licensed area.

The 50 vehicles will be sporting a corporate identify badge with the phrase 'Vega Baja Litoral Sur' so that they are easily recognised by passengers.

This scheme, which is due to start in October, has been two years in the planning.

Saturday operations on the table

by Ray Chadwick CARMEN MONTÓN, councillor for health, has announced that operating rooms at the Alicante General Hospital will open on a Saturday to reduce waiting lists. Currently, there are 5,000 patients waiting to be operated on at the hospital.

This is the latest in a series of health initiatives throughout the Valencian Community that have been implemented since the change of regional government in May 2015 when, as Montón recalls, there were more than 10,000 people on waiting lists totalling 3,500,000 days.

He was also keen to point out that more than 10,000 Valencian people have had their lives saved due to the fact that the Community were the first and only ones to give treatment to all sufferers of Hepatitis C that required it.

AS THE new school year gets underway in Murcia, a number of native English speakers have been recruited to help in the region’s kindergartens.

The initiative was announced by councillor Adela Martínez-Cachá who said “...that the regional government considers it essential to start learning languages at a very early age, and it’s for that reason we provide an educational programme that includes lessons for young children to become familiar with foreign languages.”

The councillor has recently attended a meeting with the directors of the schools involved to discuss the way ahead.

Children between the ages of 0 to 3-years-old will be listening to native English speakers from the UK, the USA, Ireland and Canada.

Illegal exotic bird traders caged

Guardia Civil busier than usual GUARDIA CIVIL officers based in Alicante have been called out in record numbers during 2017, with incidents on the road accounting for a significant percentage.

During the course of the year so far, they have helped, assisted and rescued over 5,000 times throughout the province of which more than 3,500 relate to road accidents. The remainder – 1,147 – were connected to domestic death and medical emergencies, mountain and sea rescues and, at a number of fires where they supervised evacuation procedures.

The extra work carried out by the Guardia Civil over the past 12 months has been put down to the extremes of winter weather endured in the province during the winter.

by Ray Chadwick OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil in Elche have dismantled nine illegal exotic bird organisations.

During their operation, they found a total of 153 various protected species of birds including macaws, parrots and cockatoos located in one shop and eight locations found in the Elche countryside.

Charges of the keeping, breeding and selling such exotic species were brought, and a total of 89 separate offences were recorded with those carrying out the illegal operation found to be lacking the necessary local authority licenses, official zoological accreditations and hygiene certificates.

Many of the bird species found originate from the South American rainforests and can be sold for a considerable profit. The police focused their attention on the countryside properties which had been officially declared by the owners as ‘private zoological collections’, when in fact they

A TOTAL of 164 refugees have arrived in Spain from Greece as part of the European Union’s relocation plan.

Fifteen of them will be welcomed in Murcia.

All of this current group of refugees have come from war-torn Syria, with 115 being of Syrian nationality, 42 Iraqi, one from Yemen and six others classed as stateless citizens.

They are made up of 74 men, 24 women and 66 children.

All the refugees arrived on the same aircraft at Barajas Airport in Madrid and have been moved to a wide selection of towns and cities across the country. The 164 will be welcomed in Álava (10), Asturias (4), Avila (5), Barcelona (13), Cáceres (4), Cantabria (6), Girona (8), Guipúzcoa (2), Huesca (1), Madrid (36), Murcia (15), La Rioja (9), Salamanca (8), Seville (6), Segovia Tarragona (5), Valencia (9), Valladolid (7), Vizcaya (5) and Zaragoza (8).

Since the humanitarian programme of relocation of refugees began, Spain has taken 1,888 people, and all have and will benefit from support with accommodation, legal assistance, social care and counselling, schools, healthcare, language learning and job training.

by Ray Chadwick THREE CHILDREN have been arrested after allegedly being involved in episodes of vandalism in Cartagena.

The incident occurred last month when two fire extinguishers were believed to have been thrown from the ninth floor of a building in the Urbanisation Playa Honda and caused considerable damage to vehicles in the car park below. Residents raised the alarm after being disturbed by the noise the

tinguishers.

Guardia Civil officers eventually identified the suspects and although all three were on the landing at the time of the incident, it appears that only one person threw the extinguishers into the car park below. Officers were keen to point out that when the extinguishers were thrown from the landing, there would’ve been no way the youths would know if anyone was down below at the time, as the ledge was five feet high and impossible to see over.

Cerebral palsy boy has wheelchair stolen

by Steve Collins MEMBERS of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) in Alicante gave a new wheelchair to the family of a young boy who had his stolen while in the sea.

Ahmed Yousef, who has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, came to Alicante with his family to use the warmth of the Mediterranean Sea to aid his therapy. Every day, as the sun is about to do down, the Yousef family went to the main El Postiguet beach to let seven-yearold Ahmed go into the sea and help him move his arms and legs that are paralysed.

This family of Syrian refugees – on holiday from their now permanent home in Germany since 2015 – chose to leave Ahmed’s wheelchair on the nearby promenade rather than put in the sand, and when they returned it had been stolen. Without any knowledge of Spanish or

the city, they were lost in both senses.

Some days later, and still without a wheelchair for Ahmed, they bumped into a young Moroccan man called Yassine who had been working at one of hotels for many years who tried to help them. Apparently, rather than miss the chance to bathe in the sea, the family had carried Ahmed in their arms from the local bus for three days.

They were left exhausted and didn’t know what to do or who to go to for help.

Yassine approached the Cruz Roja for help and within a very short time were able to supply a wheelchair for Ahmed and his family to use for the rest of their holiday. Ahmed’s father, Omar, said he couldn’t thank the Cruz Roja enough for their generous gesture which enabled his son to continue with his vital therapy.

Car crash woman rescued

FIREFIGHTERS from Almoradí were called to rescue an 80-year-old woman trapped in her car.

They were called to the scene following an accident which saw the vehicle she was driving involved in a collision with a van in Calle Onda in Rojales. A number of firefighters attended the scene and needed to cut the trapped woman free. The woman, of Swiss nationality, once rescued, was taken by ambulance to hospital suffering from what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

GENEROSITY: Cruz Roja help young Ahmed

Scrubland fire stopped in its tracks FIREFIGHTERS in Santa Pola successfully extinguished a fire in the Meleja area.

Quick action by the emergency services ensured that the fire didn’t spread to nearby pine forests and a handful of small houses with their own pieces of land. The only area affected was an area of 200 square metres of scrubland.

The alarm was raised by a resident of

Santa Pola who spotted the flames and accompanying black smoke, and when the fire brigade arrived assessed the imminent dangers of the dry land in the vicinity accompanied by the strong Levante wind that was blowing at the time.

The fire was eventually put out and the area declared safe after about 90 minutes.

Cycle lanes cause continual problems

SOMETHING linked to this issue has raised its head every week since the dedicated cycle lanes were opened along the Avenida de Elche...the southern access road from the N-332 into Alicante.

Firstly, it was the speed restriction from 80kph to 50kph that caused traffic jams; then it was the narrower lanes that resulted in a few close scrapes with lorries and buses. That was followed by complaints that many of the bike riders preferred to use the main road rather than the special and newly opened lanes and restricted overtaking manoeuvres. Now it’s the amount of occasions that vehicles have hit the low wall that separates the main carriageway from the cycle lanes.

As one driver who had to take their car for repair commented, “you do not expect it. You are driving along a straight road and suddenly, when you hit the bike lane, you’re forced to make a quick turn.

It’s worse at night because there’s no lighting.”

Man imprisoned after friend’s dead body found

Victim was killed with a single shot

by Glenn Scott A 58-YEAR-OLD Spanish national has been sent to prison by a court in Murcia accused of allegedly killing his roommate with a single gunshot in an apartment in Espinardo. The victim, a 60year-old man was found by police after other roommates of the victim discovered the body on the floor of his flat.

The coroner was called and immediately issued a death certificate. The homicide group of the National Police

assumed the investigation into the case and after taking statements from four other roommates arrested one of them for the crime of homicide and the illegal possession of a firearm.

The incident began on Sunday morning when neighbours called the police after seeing what they believed was blood dripping onto the street from an overlooking terrace. Police reports in the Spanish press at the time said that there were no immediate signs that the man’s death was violent but that they

had taken samples away for further investigation.

It was then reported that a 22-year-old man from Latvia had been detained in connection with death after being arrested at a police checkpoint in the Valencian town of Alzira for an unrelated incident.

Neighbours of the dead man told police that they had seen this arrested man with a blond woman at the scene of the crime on occasions, and were spotted on the day of the victim’s death riding his motorbike.

Double road fatalities A YOUNG driver has been killed in a traffic accident in Alicante.

The 24-year-old was fatally injured on the Avenida de Elche at one of the main entrances to the city at the junction of Calle Federico Mayo and the large petrol station that is located on the corner.

left the carriageway due to unknown causes and crashed into a wall. Emergency services were called but they found the victim was dead at the scene.

At the same time, a 40year-old truck driver died when his vehicle left the A-30 dual carriageway and fell down an embankment in Murcia. The

circumstances of the accident are unknown and happened at the San Javier exit of the MurciaCartagena section of the A-30. Firefighters managed to free the driver from his cab although the accompanying paramedic team were unable to do anything to save his life.

Deliberate car fire suspected FIREFIGHTERS in Torrevieja were called to an incident in the south of the city, only yards away from the fire station.

A car parked in the front garden of a semi-abandoned house caught fire on Urbanisation Torreta Florida and the alarm was raised when neighbours saw dense black smoke coming from the Calle Pio Baroja area.

With the fire station located nearby, firefighters were quickly on the scene and found one of the four cars parked on the front terrace well alight. They were shortly joined by the local police of Torrevieja who immediately closed

the section of the road off to traffic.

Nobody was in the house at the time of the blaze and it’s understood that the fire was deliberate as minutes earlier a fire in a rubbish container was reported in an adjoining street.

The incident occurred in an area of Torrevieja that was especially busy with tourists, many of whom were denied access to their properties in the affected area for some time while the fire was extinguished.

The large column of smoke could be seen for miles around, especially from the Ozone and Carrefour commercial centre.

VANDALISED: People in Murcia bemoaning lack of bikes

by Lynn Whittaker CYCLES available for the members of the public in the city of Murcia have been vandalised or stolen.

‘MuyBici’ the company behind the scheme that allows people to rent a bicycle to get around town and return them to a series of drop-off points have said that during this summer, more than 500 bikes have needed repair.

When the rental zones were checked earlier this week, only 19 of the 59 areas

had any bike in them available for hire.

The lack of bikes for the regular users has made its way onto social media with complaints aimed at MuyBici. The manager of the company, Carlos Baile, explained that they had taken advantage of the end of the main tourist season to repair as many of the vandalised cycles as possible which will join the 150 new bikes that have recently been purchased.

Despite all their efforts at the repair and the replacement of the fleet which

will continue to be renewed over the coming days, the vandalism continues and a perfect example of this was finding six of the bikes dumped in the outskirts of the city. Carlos Baile said that this was becoming a daily occurrence.

Because of this, a dedicated group of employees from MuyBici is now out and about collecting these abandoned bikes.

Further action, such as the installation of CCTV cameras operating in the points with most incidents is being considered.

AROUND 400 volunteers gathered on a number of beaches in La Manga del Mar Menor as part of a cleanup initiative.

A combination of the recent storms that have washed up extra waste and the behaviour of litterbug beachgoers allowed the volunteers to collect 9,500 kilos of rubbish from the Ensenada del Esparto. A total of 500 kilos of that amount consisted of plastic material found on the beach and in the sea.

The project came from an original idea from residents of several urbanisations in the north of La Manga who, with the collaboration with the San Javier council, wanted to raise awareness about caring for the coastal area.

The day of the big clean-up started with a demonstration by SGS Marine Services on marine pollution, followed by a talk on the most common of all beach seaweed, the posidonia.

A hard day’s work, undertaken by volunteers made up of all different nationalities, finished off with a barbecue to thank everyone for their efforts.

CARTAGENA’S local governing party, the Partido Popular (PP) will be bringing in new laws to restrict the amount of bar and restaurant terraces.

The problem has been caused by an increase of more than 40 per cent over the past few years in the amount of businesses in the hospitality industry opening that use outside terrace space; space that is becoming a premium and has resulted in complaints from local residents. The PP has decided that they need to act and carry out a review of current regulations at the next plenary session. They will undertake to consult with local business owners and representatives of the hotel industry before presenting new initiatives.

Whilst appreciating that the openings of new bars and restaurants has boosted the local economy and has generated employment, the PP explained that a happy medium has to be in place to balance that with the needs of local people who see more and more of their roads and pavements being overtaken by tables and chairs.

Once the new plans are implemented, there will also be an increase in the number of officials patrolling the areas ensuring they are complied with.

AVAST: Pascual Flores may need significant investment THE ICONIC ship that adorns the harbour of Torrevieja, the Pascual Flores, is now in a perilous state.

The replica of the sailing ship that famously featured in the successful BBC TV series The Onedin Line had a tilting mizzen mast which was likely to collapse at any moment. Torrevieja

council had the 4,000 kilo wooden structure taken down by a large crane and at the same time would be reviewing the overall safety and condition of the vessel.

The fear is that the other two masts are in a similar state and it’s also been revealed that the ship has sunk a further metre into the water

due to the rotting hull.

The replica ship cost the Torrevieja council €4.5m when it arrived in the city 10 years ago and Torrevieja councillor Domingo Pérez said that a full evaluation will shortly take place to see what needs repairing and how much it will cost to make it able to fully sail again.

by Steve Collins DESPITE all the warning signs placed around the area, more than 100 cars are still parking in an area of La Mata that is in danger of sinking.

Locals know the space as the location of the weekly Wednesday market in La Mata and in the summer used as a car park for the influx of summer residents and tourists using the apartments and the nearby beach.

The centre sections of the car park that are situated above the canal are clearly marked in yellow but appear to be no deterrent to the drivers who ignore them. The frustration for the local authorities is that allegedly no action is being taken by local police who, in other locations with similar parking warnings, wouldn’t hesitate in imposing fines and physically removing

the offending vehicles.

This problem is not new as the owners of the land - Patrimonio del Estado – were informed, back in 2003 when concerns were first noticed about the potential subsidence of the area, that the car park was illegal.

In May this year, Torrevieja council issued a notification preventing the market that sees 160 stalls and thousands of people visiting every Wednesday but it continues unabated.

Councillor Javier Manzanares said the problem is the lack of enforcement of the law by the police who, in the summer months, can’t be everywhere.

A new location is being sought for the La Mata market and consultations with local business people and residents are taking place. The most popular suggestion is to relocate the market close to the Avenida de los Europeos.

Emotional farewell to young victim of drunk driver HUNDREDS of relatives and friends attended the funeral of a young man killed by a drunk driver in Santa Pola.

The 17-year-old was killed after hit by a speeding car in Avenida Santiago Bernabeu - which also ran over two others aged 15 and 17 – as he crossed the road. It has also been confirmed that not only was the driver above the drink-drive limit, he was already banned from driving until March 2019. The residents of

Santa Pola, still in a state of shock at the death of a very popular young man took part in an emotional service in support and respect of the family and friends of the deceased.

The congregation was boosted by classmates and members of the basketball club where he trained.

Flags at the Santa Pola town hall were at half-mast in tribute and many minutes of silence have been observed since the tragedy unfolded.

RESIDENTS and tourists alike are being warned about a scam being perpetrated by fake members of the Spanish Cruz Roja (Red Cross).

Via its Facebook page, the local organisation of the Cruz Roja in Almoradí has alerted its members to a number of volunteers for the organisation that are selling raffle tickets door to door and collecting funds on their behalf.

Almoradí Cruz Roja have confirmed that they are not organising any lottery with the aim of raising money for a new ambulance and are warning people not to part with any cash. They also ask that if people are approached they should be reported to the police immediately.

Every official volunteer for the Cruz Roja must always wear their uniform and carry an accreditation with them at all times.

The need for these cards for travelling purposes in Europe – Spanish do not need their passports for EU countries – increases the demand but also clashes with members of staff that are also on holiday.

Those that haven’t been able to secure a prior appointment often begin to queue up at 2am to get one of the only 30 numbers that are distributed at 7am.

One complaint was received from parents with two children who had to queue for two nights in a row for them to get the four tickets given out as they didn’t want the children queuing all-night with them.

FIGURES JUST released by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) show mortgages on the increase in the Murcia region.

During the month of June 2017, mortgages arranged rose 21.2 per cent compared to the same period last year. This accounts for a total of 725 mortgages being taken out; the national average increase is 16.5 per cent.

Among the Autonomous Communities, Murcia registered the fifth largest increase with Asturias (67.2 per cent), La Rioja (66 per cent), the Canary Islands (59.8 per cent) and Madrid (37 per cent) ahead of them.

The amount of actual capital loaned in Murcia rose by 24.4 per cent year-on-year to a total of €54.8m.

THE SECOND phase of a series of urgent repair and renovation works are being carried out on the famous tower in La Mata.

Repair work began after the series of storms in December last year and in January and March of this were found to have seriously disabled the historic structure and there was a fear it would collapse.

HALAL LAMB: Orihuela factory sends meat all over Europe

by Steve Collins THROUGHOUT the Vega Baja and across the province of Alicante, there is only one abattoir qualified for the slaughter of lamb in the Halal tradition.

Found in Orihuela, it also has the only personnel that can carry out such rituals that follow strict regulations and use only official tools and equipment.

The festival of Eid al-Adha (the feast of sacrifice) has just been celebrated

across the world honouring the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son, as an act of obedience to God's command. Before Abraham sacrificed his son, God provided a male goat to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this, an animal is sacrificed and divided into three parts: one third of the share is given to the poor and needy; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbours; and the remaining third is retained by the family.

A total of 2,500 lambs were sacrificed for the Eid al-Adha festival in the Orihuela slaughterhouse which were distributed in the Vega Baja and to Alicante, Murcia, Albacete; and even abroad to France and Italy.

As much as 80 per cent of the production in Orihuela is destined for the Muslim population in the province although there has been a noticeable decline in the amount of sales of Halal meat in the region.

Pavement upgrades en route ALGORFA city council has announced an investment of €120,000 to improve the streets in the locality. The plans include the upgrading and repair of various public areas such as pavements, kerbstones and ensuring disabled access where needed.

Algorfa’s mayor, Manuel Ros, said: “These are the basic requirements of any municipality and the works will be carried out with the safety of our residents in mind.”

One of the main areas will be the roundabout on the industrial estate in Montemar that will see paving on previously unmade areas and an increase in street lighting.

The money for the project has been supplied by the Alicante provincial government.

Always time for learning WITHIN two hours of the lines opening, places available on a series of courses offered for elderly students were filled.

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) announced that 53 of the 55 places available for mature students had been taken up by an increasing number of people from a generation that feel they lost out on their own education. As one applicant, María José

Garre Martínez, commented: “We left school at 14 and started work to help out our parents; now is the time to help our children.” Another successful member of the course said: “I’m unemployed and by joining these courses I can quench my need to learn.”

Enrolments in the courses begin next week and the cost for the three available courses of study costs €125.

Lucky escape in bus station crash A WOMAN has been injured after a bus crashed inside Torrevieja Bus Station.

According to official and witness reports, the woman was waiting to buy her ticket when the bus came into the station, lost control and crashed through a barrier and into the ticket office. The incident happened at about 5pm and it has yet to be established the reasons why the bus didn’t stop as it crashed into the ticket office operated by Bilman Bus – the service that links Bilbao to La Manga – that has ended up badly damaged.

The woman needed to be rescued and was eventually taken by ambulance to Torrevieja Hospital having suffered from shock. It’s not known if she suffered any injuries during her ordeal.

Despite crashing into the Bilman Bus ticket office, the bus crashing into it belongs to the Globalia line that has only recently taken over the new Cartagena to Alicante semi-express route.

THE HIGH voltage lines that have crossed a village in Murcia have finally been taken down.

Residents in El Palmer could be heard cheering and clapping as electric company Iberdrola began dismantling the giant structures – 11 in all – which stretched for a total of 2.3 kilometres.

This is all part of the investment of €40m made by Iberdrola aiming to provide the city with a state-ofthe-art, modern and more secure electrical distribution network, and once the new substation and high voltage underground feeder lines are up and running, they will begin similar work in Los Rectores.

The new substations allow technology that doesn’t require huge pylons to carry the power and thus can be kept in a confined space and remove the eyesores of the large structures.

Experience over age?..

by Lynn Whittaker LATEST statistics show that more people over the age of 45 have started their own business in the Murcia region.

Since 2011, that age group has accounted for just over half of those that have set up new ventures, many of whom lost their jobs when the economic crisis began to bite in 2008 or have simply been ignored in the current labour market because of their age.

The organisation RETA – which is a special scheme for self-employed workers in Murcia – showed that from a total of 98,000 registered with them, 51.755 came from the over 45s and up 4 per cent on last year. RETA believes that this current trend is a reflection that companies are looking

to take on younger workers, plus that the older workers believe that they have experience to offer and have thus established their own business rather than wait for the call of others to employ them.

President of the Association of Autonomous Workers (ATA) in Murcia, Yolanda Paredes, also considers that these older people are more likely to succeed as entrepreneurs because of the knowledge gained from their professional experience. "It's a very good age to set up on your own, as many of these people have gained valuable experience in the private sector and know what they’re doing,” she said. “They, in turn, can also be a valuable source of job creation too as the success of their enterprises results in expansion.”

Police exhibiting themselves A UNIQUE opportunity to learn about the history of the local police is currently open to the public.

The Auditorio de La Lonja in Orihuela is hosting an exhibition of police uniforms, weapons, vehicles and other memorabilia showing the history of

the body that was first created in the 1950s.

The collection of more than 40 different types of uniform from the past 60 years belongs to local police officer Oliver Riquelme, and it was his idea to put on the exhibition.

The room has been recreated

to resemble a time gone by containing showcases of a selection of weapons used by the force. It also features some old police cars, motorbikes and boats as well as a number of badges photographs and historical documents.

The exhibition is on until this Sunday September 10.

A bridge to the Mar THE BRIDGE of El Estacio de La Manga in San Javier has reopened.

It was closed for just short of a week after a technical fault meant the famous bridge that allows ships taller than seven metres to leave the Mar Menor for the Mediterranean couldn’t be used. It was originally hoped that there would only

be a delay of 48 hours but the damage to the bridge was more than anticipated.

Recently completed technical inspections were favourable and permission was given for the reopening.

Opening times for the bridge have returned to normal which are every two hours from 8am until 10pm.

CONTAMINATED: Millions of eggs have been pulled from European supermarket shelves

by Rose Holmes Eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil have been discovered in 40 countries, including 24 of the European Union’s 28 member states.

Millions of eggs have been pulled from European supermarket shelves, though some regulators have voiced concern that many contaminated eggs have already entered the food chain, mainly through processed products such as biscuits, cakes and

salads.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission is reported to have confirmed that the only EU member states so far unaffected are Lithuania, Portugal, Cyprus and Croatia.

She is also reported to have confirmed that the non-EU states in which contaminated eggs have been discovered include the United States, Russia, South Africa and Turkey.

Dutch and Belgian authorities traced the source of the insecticide to

a supplier of cleaning products in the Netherlands. Two Dutch men who ran the cleaning company Chickfriend were arrested last month.

While a large number of contaminated eggs would need to be eaten to affect health, fipronil is considered moderately toxic and can cause organ damage in humans.

It is widely used to treat pets for ticks and fleas but its use in the food chain - for example, to clean out barns - is forbidden.

U.S. security agencies warned Spain that Daesh was planning an attack in Barcelona, according to the Spanish press.

The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) is reported to have alerted Spanish intelligence officers to the threat weeks and even months before a van ploughed into pedestrians on August 17, killing 14 people and injuring over 100.

In addition to the 14 killed by the van, two others were killed during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife attack in the Catalan coastal resort of Cambrils.

"Unsubstantiated information of unknown veracity from late May 2017 indicated that Daesh was planning to conduct unspecified terrorist attacks during the summer against crowded tourist sites in Barcelona, Spain, specifically Las Ramblas boulevard," according to an NCTC briefing note published by the Spanish press.

Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks without naming those behind the assault.

A spokesman for Spain's CNI intelligence agency, refused when contacted by the Spanish press, to "confirm or deny anything on communication with other intelligence services".

But a Madrid-based radio station quoted "anti-terror sources" suggesting that the note published was authentic.

by Tahnee Wright A Spanish woman who believed Salvador Dali was her father is not the surrealist painters's daughter, DNA tests have proved.

60-year-old Maria Pilar Abel Martinez won a court case back in June which resulted in a judicial order to have the body of Dali exhumed and subjected to DNA tests.

But now the Dali Foundation says the tests have conclusively proved the two are not related.

"The DNA tests show that Pilar Abel is not Dali's daughter," the foundation, which manages his estate, said in a statement on Wednesday, six weeks after the artist's body was exhumed from under the theatre in his Catalonian home town of Figueres, which was converted into a museum for his work and is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions.

Dali died of heart failure in 1989 aged 85

and was previously thought to be childless even largely celibate – however Ms Martinez, a tarot card reader, has been claiming since 2007 that her mother told her at an early age of a short-lived, secret affair with the artist in the mid-1950s.

Ms Martinez says her grandmother knew of the affair and would often tell her that she was ‘strange, like your father.’

Had they been related, Ms Martinez would have had a claim on part of Dali's estate – his work was worth hundreds of millions of euros collectively and he bequeathed it all to the Spanish state upon his death.

A number of Dali experts had raised their eyebrows at the claim before his body was exhumed, with biographer Ian Gibson noting the artist's own claim of "I'm impotent, you've got to be impotent to be a great painter".

It is not known how Ms Martinez has responded to the news.

Spain most popular for British pensioners ALMOST a quarter of a million British pensioners have chosen to make mainland Europe their home, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday.

Spain was the outright winner for British over-65s, accounting for over 121,000 older ex-pats who have left the shores of Britain. It is double the number registered 10 years earlier.

As one recent report explained:

"Pensioners are one of Britain's great exports. Of the 296,600 British citizens who resided in Spain in 2016, around 40 percent were 65 or over."

At the same time, only 85,000 elderly citizens of mainland European countries have made Britain their home, said ONS. France, the closest mainland European country to Britain, is the number

two choice, with around 70,000 British pensioners living there.

The number of Spanish and French pensioners living in Britain is around 7,500 in each case.

Italy is the only wealthy European country where the number of their pensioners living in Britain (around 20,000) exceeds the estimated 5,000 British pensioners living in Italy.

If you ask members of the Baby Boomer generation, what in their opinion was the greatest dance from their younger years, you would undoubtedly receive an assortment of answers, such was the number of dance crazes that came out of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

Right up there I imagine would be the jive, one dance style that still retains its popularity. But there was a lot of competition back then, with weird stuff like: The Mashed Potato; Locomotion; Stroll, and Hitch Hike, to name just a few.

But I recently watched a video on Facebook, posted by one of my ex-

Bermuda cronies of a party in the 1970’s, and I was reminded of something that helped make those times so memorable - the greatest dance ever devised by man - not the Watusi or Hully Gully, but the Bump!

Now whoever invented this dance, it’s pretty obvious to me that it must have been someone with a sadistic bent, a retired tax inspector perhaps, and which you might think contradicts my opinion of it being the greatest.

But there is something deeply satisfying about being able to knock eight bells out of each other on the dance floor without seriously falling out.

And in spite of being one who is to dancing what Kim Jong Un is to standup comedy, I wasn’t half bad at it.

And I have the scars to prove it.

Freud would have made something out of that.

Like a lot of men of my generation, it takes a few gallons of wine to loosen up my head sufficiently to take to the dance floor.

And see, that’s what I like about alcohol, it’s a rejuvenating potion, because no sooner am I up there, than I am at it like a mantis at speed.

Any doubts about my dancing ability are washed away in a tide of Rioja,

and I suddenly know without a doubt, that I am pretty damn cool.

Trouble is whilst ‘getting on down’ is ok, ‘getting on up’ presents a problem, nevertheless judging by the gyrating and the chucking out of legs at odd angles going on around me, the Twist seems still to be the most popular dance with other Golden Agers.

But these days there is a worrying sound above the music, reminiscent of a gate with rusty hinges. It’s the sound of hip and knee replacements under stress.

Dancing has become a dangerous game.

The Costa del Sol Adventures Costa del Sol was sitting on a terrace in Lagos with nothing but the flat morning ocean and a beer for company when his phone buzzed. “Heh-low. Who´s this?”

“Heard anything strange this morning?”

Costa recognised the voice of his friend Dan Sanchéz of the National Police. They´d walked the same path together once - both were half-Spanish, half-English - but the road had forked and each had gone their own way. “Not a birdy. What´s happened?”

“A Cessna carrying Frank Levy the Hollywood producer back from Cannes was over Malaga.” Dan listed a few of Levy´s films, well-known low-brow hits. “A crew member robbed him mid-air and jumped from the plane. Diamond ring.”

“Happy landing?”

Costa could hear the hooting Malaga traffic behind Dan. “As far as we know.”

“Where was this?”

“Near Comares. In the mountains behind Velez.”

Costa watched a dolphin break the slate-grey surface.

“So?” came his friend´s voice.

“Sure. I´ll give it a go.”

“Get me on this number. Levy´s offering a reward too, so that´s a double incentive this time.”

Costa stood and stretched, dropping a coin onto the table for the beer. He saw an old Scot with a tatty, grey beard standing near his boat. Costa knew that years back the man had been at this beach with his wife, now long dead, and had lost his wedding ring while swimming. He came every morning, walking the disappearing waves, looking in vain for the ring.

Costa pushed his boat out and gunned the engine. Waving at the old man - they hardly ever spoke - he skimmed off across the glassy surface planning how he was going to spend his reward.

During the late 1980s millions caught up on world events by switching on BBC or ITV News. The term news is a misnomer as newsfeed was then dominated by events in apartheid South Africa.

BBC anchor-man, Michael Buerk, covered so many stories in the region I assumed he had residential status. There was never doubt that mainstream TV was singing to the same

hymn sheet as was the Sovietbacked African National Council (ANC).

I recall one shocking incident in which an African teenager, suspected of being an informer by a witch-finding mob, suffered a petrol-filled tyre being placed over his head before being publicly incinerated. I felt then and now that the pitiless vigilantes were heartened by the presence of the BBC´s TV crew which filmed the unfolding horror.

During the 1960s I stayed in Cape Town and Durban. Once, lost and late at night, I wandered the shanty towns but I never felt threatened. There was an anti-British bias but this came not from Africans but from young White descendants of Dutch settlers.

The term apartheid has negative connotations but it is simply the Boer word for ´separateness´. Today, separate development is commonplace the world over. There is never media interest in the Indian caste system or apartheid practiced elsewhere. Ironically,

much separateness is wisely self-imposed. The West´s current experiment in social engineering forces quite dissimilar ethnic groups together with chaos the consequence.

Television crews were often banished from South Africa for setting up fake news stories. A common trick used by television teams was to toss loose coins into public trash bins.

African kids, typical of all children, would scramble into the bins to recover the coins.

This activity was filmed and the footage later captioned or narrated: ‘In Apartheid South Africa the Whites live well whilst African children feed from rubbish bins.’

Pictures of armoured vehicles were superimposed on the backdrops to peaceful public parks.

writes, “My late brother, who lived in England, said BBC and ITV claim black children are held in concentration camps.

But, the pictures shown were of the children from Khayalitsha. The kids were standing at the town´s airport fence watching airliners coming and going.

Today, in African ruled South Africa, there are an estimated 450 white squatter camps scattered across the world´s most lawless nation.

These luckless ethnicEuropean communities make up about

25% of South Africa´s white population. Are we surprised that there isn´t a British hack to be found at any of these squatter camps.

How was your August? For the remainders hot and sticky I guess? The summer inferno is too much for me so as always, I escaped back to London, and you can almost guarantee cool weather, with more than a splattering of rain, after all it is August with the children on holiday, with many parents or grandparents trying to keep them warm and dry at an English seaside resort, then just as you thought it was over, Bank Holiday weekend turned out to be one of the hottest on records, weather madness.

My August was terrible, I ended up a nervous wreck, it was like standing in a bath having a shower at the Bates Motel aka the Hitchcock film Pshyco, as I spent nearly the whole month, either on the telephone or emailing companies that had been able to mess everything up with a regularity that must be unprecedented in my life.

First unfortunately for me a foreign lorry from Romania turned into the near side of my car damaging the nearside rear door and back nearside wing of my car, the lorry had been parked on double yellow lines in front of temporary lights at some roadworks. All the cars in front of me signalled and overtook the stationary lorry, when the lights turned green in our favour, I did the same and as I got level with the front of the lorry he decided to pull away without any signal from the kerb, hitting my car.

I jumped out and took a couple of pictures quickly, and then realised that the lorry was a left-hand drive, I walked round to his open window, and told him what he had done, and that I wanted to exchange insurance details with him, he replied in broken English that he could not park there any longer as he was blocking the traffic.

We agreed to meet after the traffic lights, stop and then exchange details, the lorry was as wide as the road, so I told him to move up into a bus lane so we could continue with the paperwork.

I moved up to the bus lane and waited for him to arrive, he drove past with his window still open and shouted, “I’m not stopping”.

Luckily, I had a picture of his front, showing his registration number as he drove off I managed to take the number of the rear plate, and low and behold it was different to the front plate.

As my car was not seriously damaged, I drove home just half a mile away and called the police, I then had to go to their website and fill in all the

details, attached the photographs that I had taken, then the next thing I did was call my insurance company. After 10 minutes or so I got through only after pressing a series of numbers, if you want so and so press one, then press three and then press two after another ten minutes I finally got a human being, whose English was only slightly better than the Romanian lorry driver, after nearly one hour with my nerves about to explode, the insurance agent asked me to email them all the details and the pictures to their website. I then received several calls and emails asking me to repeat all the details that I had provided before.

The next day was hour on hour speaking to the gas board, once again waiting a long time to get through, pressing yet again, one, then two, then four on my keypad of my telephone, I finally was able to speak to a human being, my reason to speak to them was that we have decided on having a new gas boiler.

After ages and ages, I finally got an appointment to have a representative come to my home to do a survey and give me a quote.

The next day I received a call from the gas board to tell me when the gas man cometh, I told them that I have already got an appointment, the next thing I got was an email of the confirmation of appointment which was a different day and time that I had agreed on.

The gas man did cometh on the first day and time that had been agreed on in the first place, luckily, I was in and he explained the mix up by revolving his index finger by his temple, that signifies madness.

Then I got an email from Vodafone telling me that my broadband and home telephone has been cancelled because they were unable to take a payment from my direct

debit at the bank.

So, I telephoned them, the usual happened, press one, press two, press five, finally after waiting almost half an hour I spoke to yet another human being. “What’s your account number?” I gave it to them, after twenty minutes or so the person told me that there was no such account, about to burst into tears I explained that I had signed a contract and gave them my bank details so they could set up a direct debit.

“No sir we do not have anything on the details you have given”.

But, but I spluttered with my fist clenched in anger I had given everything that was needed and I’ve been using my broadband and home phone for more than two months.

“OK” the voice said, “we can set up all the details now while we speak”, this I did, but for the next few days I got more emails from Vodafone confirming first that my contract had been cancelled.

Then I called them back and they apologised for the mistakes assuring me that the new contract was now in operation.

So that was my August, I had nightmares all month long of the Bates Motel with a dark shadow through the shower curtains wielding a knife and me screaming like Janet Leigh being stabbed repeatedly.

With my nerves shot to pieces, I’m p a c k i n g my bag

to return to a large brandy and a coffee and to sanity I hope.

P.S The foreign lorry has not been traced by either the police or my Insurance company at this moment of writing.

My new gas boiler will be installed within the next few days.

And my home broadband and phone are working, but Vodafone have not taken any payment so far.

Adjectival agreement Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Last week we talked about the gender of nouns and how the articles (“a” and “the”) and adjectives (describing words) change their endings to match the gender of the nouns. Now we’ve got those basic principles established we can start looking a bit more closely at adjectives and how they change. This is really very simple. Last lesson we looked at the word for “small”, that is pequeño and we saw how it changes in four ways – pequeño, pequeña, pequeños, pequeñas, equivalent to masculine and feminine singular, masculine and feminine plural.

The root form which you will find in a dictionary is the masculine singular pequeño.

All adjectives that end in “o” in their masculine singular form change in exactly the same way. There are thousand of them. Here are a few that we can use to describe people: alto “tall”, bajo “short”, gordo “fat”, delgado “thin”, tímido “shy”, simpático “nice”, guapo “handsome”, feo “ugly”, viejo “old”. In each case they will have the four changes I have mentioned, so for example: El hombre guapo - the handsome man Los hombres guapos - the handsome men La mujer guapa – the pretty woman

Las mujeres guapas – the pretty women.

Notice that in the case of the word guapo we have a different translation in English for male and female: male - handsome (or as my daughters would say - cute), and female - pretty. For most of the other words however the translations would be the same – “nice man” “nice woman” etc.

Exactly the same principle works for adjectives that describe things (remember, things are the same as people in Spanish, with either masculine or feminine gender). So, for example, we could have the word “long” which is largo used to describe an object.

Un palo largo - a long stick Una cortina larga – a long curtain Now as I have said, in each of these cases, the basic adjective ends in the letter “o”.

However, adjectives can end in almost any letter – so what do we do with all the others?

(I hear you ask).

Well, let’s look at a few random examples: azul - blue grande – big joven – young

feliz – happy

Adjectives such as those above that do not end in “o” can only change from singular to plural: they cannot make any change to differentiate them between masculine and feminine.

Therefore we have: El libro azul - the blue book La mesa azul – the blue table El zapato grande – the big shoe La camisa grande – the big shirt El hombre joven – the young man La mujer joven – the young woman El niño feliz - the happy boy La niña feliz – the happy girl However, in the plural, these adjectives add “s” or “es” in exactly the same way as nouns do. Here are the same phrases again in the plural.

Los libros azules - the blue books Las mesas azules – the blue tables Los zapatos grandes – the big shoes

Las camisas grandes – the big shirts Los hombres jóvenes – the young men Las mujeres jóvenes – the young women Los niños felices - the happy boys Las niñas felices – the happy girls

We can notice two different things here. Firstly look at the adjectives in both sets of phrases and you will see that in each case there are only two possible forms - singular and plural. Five natural ways to make your home smell amazing There's something about a clean, fresh-smelling home that feels a little like heaven, but most of us also don't want to go to town on harsh chemicals to keep it that way.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make your home smell amazing naturally and many of them include things you likely already have around the house.

Not only does a good-smelling house feel cleaner, but the right aromas can also affect our moods and sense of calm. A 2009 study published on PubMed.org found that teens who received

aromatherapy were significantly less stressed than those who received a placebo, indicating that it could be a very effective treatment for stress management.

Essential oils on pine cones Use essential oils and pine cones to create a pretty, great-smelling decoration. Just add a few drops of essential oils, like lavender or cinnamon to pine cones and arrange them in a basket. You only need one to two drops of oil per pine cone and you can easily move the basket

from room-to-room if desired.

Oranges and cinnamon in water Simmer water in a pot on your stove and then add orange slices and a few tablespoons of cinnamon or cinnamon sticks. Turn off the heat and just let the pot sit on your stove; a delicious scent will emanate throughout your kitchen and into other rooms in your house.

Essential oil room spray Replace harsh chemical air fresheners with an essential

oil spritz. All you need to do is add three or four drops of your favourite essential oil to about a cup of water in a spray bottle.

Shake before use and you're ready to go. You can spray it in the air, on fabric items such as pillows, a comforter, or even your sofa.

Cotton buds and oil It's time for more essential oils!

In this super simple trick, just dab each end of a cotton bud into your favourite oil and hide it in the toilet paper roll in your bathroom. You'll have a nice-scented, super space-

efficient air freshener. Don't be afraid to use more than one cotton bud if a stronger scent is desired.

Baking soda jars Baking soda jars work anywhere in your home, as well as in your car.

Just poke holes in a small mason jar lid and add 1/2 cup baking soda and four to six drops of essential oil to the jar. Cap it and place wherever you want your house to smell fresh.

You can also use cloth and a rubber band if you don't have a jar cap refresh every few weeks with four to six drops of new oil.

Shell-covered pots Shell-covered pots are great if you’re struggling to let go of the summer, bringing the beach into (or directly outside of) your home even if you live inland. They add a gorgeously breezy oceanic touch to your plants.

Tools and materials: Selection of shells Kitchen paper Terracotta flower pot Tile cement Old kitchen knife Seed beads 1. If the shells need cleaning, scrub them thoroughly and drain on kitchen paper. Clean the pot, then spread tile cement thickly over a section of the side.

2. Arrange the shells in the

cement, according to your own design, embedding them deeply.

3. If the cement is too obtrusive for your taste, sprinkle on shimmery seed beads or ground up shells while the surface is still

sticky. Shake off any excess.

4. It is easier to apply the shells to the pot in sections. You can let the pot rest completely on its side as the completed section dries before starting on the next.

Naturalism – a unique exhibition to experience

AN EXHIBITION of paintings and artwork by Costa Blanca-based artist Ronen Zlotogoura will be taking place at the new Dolores cultural centre from September 9 to 19.

The exhibition, which is titled Naturalism, will highlight the treatment of forms, colours and space as they appear in nature. Ronen specialises in Hyperrealism which are paintings that look like high resolution photographs but are actually hand painted. Due to his background in

the auto body repair industry his usual medium is airbrushing using automotive paints. He has applied this technique to canvas, metal panels, wall murals and vehicles such as cars, motorbikes and boats. Combining his passion of cars and fine art he has created a collection of paintings that showcase the elegant styles and designs of both classic and modern super cars.

Having moved from London to Alicante 14 years ago, Ronen has made a name for himself

for producing very high quality artwork. As well as serving his private collectors he continues to personalise motorbikes on a regular basis for Harley Davidson Alicante, and teaches art classes every Monday and Thursday morning at his studio in Dolores.

At the exhibition you will also be able to see his beautiful water colour paintings of quaint Spanish lanes in the old part of Altea.

Admission is free and everybody is invited

to the inauguration on Saturday September 9 at 8pm when refreshments will be served.

From September 10 until September 19, exhibition opening times will be 5pm to 7pm except for Friday 15th when it will be closed for the day.

Dog steals the show...and why not?

THERE was something rather appropriate that the event celebrating International Dog Day in Zenia Boulevard should be stolen by a dog!

Not just any dog, but a 69kg, 18 month old St. Bernard.

Ana, Alcampo's departmental manager for pet supplies came into the store on her day off and brought Mateo, her St. Bernard, to support the event. What an absolute star he turned out to be. A perfect gentle giant, he let everyone make a fuss of him, and he must have been the most photographed dog in Spain on that day. The only regret of the team was that they should have charged a euro for a photo opportunity with him; they would’ve made a small fortune.

Visitors to the Boulevard were just as supportive of the APAH animal charity as they had been in February and everyone who stopped to say hi to Mateo showed interest and support for the work that the charity does. At the end of the day, over €200 in cash donations and a further similar amount in pet food had been given over by the generous customers.

Chatters is an informal social group, open to all, and sponsored by the Help At Home charity. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month. Why not join with the regulars and meet old friends and perhaps make new ones.

Help At Home is a local charity offering a little extra help to those in temporary need. Perhaps someone is in hospital, or just out of hospital and they or their partner need help in and around the house, or with the shopping, or visiting. We also loan out mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers, as well as commodes. We do not make any charge for this help and thus rely solely on donations and fund raising.

Increasing eye problems in children observed by optical group One of the world’s leading opticians, Specsavers, has noticed a worrying trend in increasing eye problems, particularly myopia (short-sightedness), in children and are advising parents to limit screen time, make sure that kids get plenty of time outside and that they have regular eye tests from the age of three.

Saher Shrief, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Torrevieja stated; “We are now seeing more and more children coming into our store with visual problems, as they are watching more TV, and using more digital devices than they have in the past.”

This is a trend which is being reported by other optical experts around the world.

According to the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) excessive use of mobile devices can cause problems like myopia and amblyopia in young children. Maria Liu from UC Berkeley’s School of Optometry, has also seen a sharp increase in young children with myopia (short-sightedness). “It’s increasing at an alarming rate worldwide and a wellaccepted contributing factor is the early introduction of handheld devices to kids.”

Overuse of computers and handheld electronic devises can cause digital eye strain and expose children to too much harmful blue light, which might increase a child’s risk of macular degeneration later in life.

In 2012, researchers from the universities of Bristol and Cardiff reported that children who spend more time outdoors playing when they are aged between eight and nine are approximately half as likely to become shortsighted by the time they are 15. So limiting screen time and encouraging outdoor play time is a great way to protect children’s eye and promote good health and levels of activity.

Saher Shrief from Specsavers explains why it is so important to protect our children’s eyes. “Good eye sight is crucial for children, as during the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision, yet one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem

that may inhibit their progress. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books. Parents need to take an active role in protecting their children’s eye health by ensuring they have regular eye tests and following experts’ advice.

We would advise parents to look out for the following symptoms that might indicate they need their eyes checking: complaining of headaches sensitivity to light straining their eyes constantly sitting too close to the TV

This September they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back to school routine.

Men’s feet are pretty lowmaintenance, but they can still benefit from some basic foot care. Rough skin, bad odour and nasty nails are big turn-offs – ask anyone. Keep your feet in great form with these best foot care tips for men.

1. Condition your feet with men’s body moisturizer. Hydrating your feet with a body lotion is critical to keeping rough, dry patches and calluses at bay. Apply immediately after showering to maximize moisture absorption and prevent dry skin.

2. Wash between your toes.

A lot of guys don’t pay much attention to their feet, even in the shower. The area between your toes traps dirt easily and is a breeding ground for bacteria; athlete’s foot may develop if you don’t regularly clean between your toes.

3. Wear shoes that fit. Rough skin on your feet is usually

the result of wearing shoes that are too tight. The tightness creates friction that can contribute to calluses. Your feet need space so get shoes that fit properly and have soft padding to reduce your risk of calluses and corns.

4. Trim your nails the right way.

When you trim your toenails, make sure you’re trimming them straight across and not rounded. Rounded nail-cutting can increase your risk of ingrown toenails, which is pretty painful. Also, trim your toenails at regular intervals.

5. Wear sandals or shoes in communal locations like the gym or public showers. The warm, humid floor of the locker room is swarming with bacteria, so always wear something on your feet at these types of public places.

Read this ...it’ll keep you listening What effect can being surrounded by high levels of noise have on our ears and our general health? Not only can it be difficult to concentrate when our surroundings are loud, but the health of your ears can also be damaged.

You might not realise it, but we are all constantly surrounded by background noise.

Whether it’s passing traffic, being sat on the patio, the sounds of the supermarket during the weekly shop; it’s difficult to get away from the buzz.

According to the World Health Organisation, there are approximately 1.1 billion younger people who are at risk of developing a hearing loss due to the use of personal audio devices. These are popular and can often be listened to at unsafe volumes.

Noise-induced hearing loss describes a hearing loss that is caused by either longterm exposure to noise or being subject to excessively loud sounds.

Being exposed to these noises can affect the hair cells which are inside the ear, and when they’re healthy, they help pass sounds to the brain to be processed.

When they are damaged, they no longer work as they should and it becomes difficult for sound to be passed through the ear and as a result, a loss of hearing occurs.

The sound waves created as a result of the noise impacts on the hair cells, which can cause temporary or permanent damage.

There are a number of symptoms associated with a loss of hearing:

a. Finding it difficult to hear the TV or feeling that you need it at a higher volume than you used to. b. Struggling to hear someone when there is additional background noise. c. Struggling to find out which direction a sound is coming from without looking around. d. Feeling more fatigued than usual when you have to listen to lots of sounds in a day.

Apple Crumble Sundae Ingredients 2 tbsp butter, 4 Granny Smiths apples, cored and diced, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 2 tbsp light brown sugar, 8 scoops vanilla ice cream, 2 ginger nuts biscuits, crushed Preparation Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 10 minutes.

Method 1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over a gentle heat and add the apples, cinnamon and sugar. Cook for 10 minutes or until the apples have softened but still hold their shape.

2. Split the mixture between four sundae glasses or bowls.

Sit 2 scoops of ice cream on top of each, followed by the crushed biscuits. Serve while the apple mix is still warm.

2. Add the watermelon, avocado, coriander and prawns, and then toss gently to serve.

Chicken, Sweet Potato & Coconut Curry

Ingredients 1 tbsp sunflower oil, 2 tsp mild curry paste 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces, 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes (use ordinary potatoes if you can’t get sweet potatoes), peeled and cut into bite-size pieces. 4 tbsp red split lentils, 300ml chicken stock, 400ml can coconut milk, 175g frozen peas Preparation Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 25 minutes.

Method 1. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan or wok, stir in the curry paste and fry for 1 minute. Add the chicken, sweet potatoes and lentils and stir to coat in the paste, then pour in the stock and coconut milk. Bring to the boil, and then simmer for 15 minutes.

2. Tip in the peas, bring back to the boil and simmer for a further 4-5 minutes. Season to taste before serving.

MORE than 300 of the most recent run of number plates have been banned from use.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) have withheld them because they are deemed potentially offensive.

Among those are MU67 DER, BU67 GER, DO67 GER, BA67 ARD, MU67 GER, HU67 WLY and OR67 SAM. Other “words” like AF67 HAN and NE67 ECT also make the list.

A DVLA spokesman said it had a responsibility to ensure plates do not “cause upset or offence”.

In June, the Swansea-based agency admitted that a plate JH11 HAD “slipped through the net”.

To some people, or on some deliberately-designed plates, a 6 can look like a “G” or an “S”. A 7 can be read as a “T” or even an “L”, and when put together, the number 67 can be read by some as an “R” - but only if you look really, really hard.

Information supplied under the Freedom of Information Act has shown words which look as if they spell the word jihad among the new plates have also been banned. Also on the list are a range of plates that start with the word NO and end with another complete three-letter word (and the 67 is irrelevant), including NO67 DAD, NO67 FUN, NO67 MUM and NO67 SON. The spokesman said: “The agency applies a clear policy of withholding potentially offensive registration numbers equally to normal issue series and those made available to purchase from our sales team.

“Such numbers are withheld if they are likely to cause offence or embarrassment to the general population in this country on the grounds of political, racial and religious sensitivities or simply because they are in poor taste when displayed correctly on a number plate.”

You will need a copy of the police report. If you don’t understand what you’re being told, request an interpreter. We also advise that you contact your insurance company as soon as possible, whether you want to make a claim or not. Make notes of what happened. Take photographs of the accident, including plates of vehicles involved. Exchange insurance details as you would in Spain. Take down the names and addresses of any witnesses. Never admit liability or apologise.

Murray out of remaining Tour events BRITISH world number two, Andy Murray says he will “most likely” miss the rest of the season because of continuing problems with his hip.

Murray, 30, pulled out of the current US Open tournament two days before it started and has not played since limping off Centre Court at Wimbledon in July.

He has taken the decision to withdraw from October’s ATP Tour events in Beijing and Shanghai and will almost certainly miss the events in Vienna and Paris later that month.

“This is the best decision for my long-term future,” said Murray.

In a statement posted on social media, Murray said he will begin his 2018 season at the Brisbane International, starting on 1 January, in preparation for the Australian Open, which begins on 15 January, following a “frustrating year on court for many reasons”.

“I’m confident after this

extended period of rest and rehabilitation I will be able to reach my best level again and be competing for Grand Slam titles next season,” he said. “I have a fantastic team working alongside me to help me through this process and appreciate the support from them and all of my fans over this difficult period.”

The three-time Grand Slam champion travelled to New York with the expectation of playing the US Open and practised all week before withdrawing on 26 August.

Earlier this week, Sir Andy said he had spoken with several leading hip specialists and his own team before reaching the decision not to defend his China Open and Shanghai Masters titles.
