Council allocates nearly half a million to summer schools Nearly 2,500 children from low-income families across Murcia will attend summer schools and camps this season.

by Tahnee Wright The Council of Social Rights has allocated €426,000 to 58 schools and six camps which will be held throughout July.

Of the 58 summer schools, 37 have been organised by the City Council and the other 21 have been organised under the Caixa Proinfancia programme.

Councillor of Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz Caballero, said that 28 summer schools will have free cafeterias, an initiative costing €61,000 benefiting 980 children.

Direct support will also be given to low-income families who do not have access to a summer school with a cafeteria.

Man ploughs car into Albanilla house A man, whose age and identity has not been confirmed, was injured on Wednesday afternoon after crashing his car into a house in Abanilla.

According to sources from the Emergency Coordination Centre, the incident took place at around 4.30 pm on avenida Francisco Salzillo.

The man’s face was bleeding heavily.

An ambulance rushed to the scene and took him to the Punto de Atencion Continuada in Albanilla before he was transferred to Morales Meseguer Hospital.

English actress new patron of local animal welfare charity

by Tahnee Wright Finca la Castellana Animal Welfare Centre (Finca la Castellana) in San Miguel de Salinas welcomed a special guest on Tuesday as Kim Taylforth, English actress and sister of actress Gillian Taylforth paid a visit.

Best known for her roles as Sharon Ingram on the Five soap opera Family Affairs and Marilyn Fenner on ITV's Bad Girls, Kim is currently appearing as Aunt Christine, in Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, as the sister of Sandy Roscoe, played sister Gillian.

Kim enjoyed a tour of the finca, meeting its residents including 72 dogs, 69 cats and 50 something other animals including birds and horses!

She took a particular shine to German Shepherd ‘Marco Polo’ – who is excitedly completing his adoption paperwork in the name of ‘Marco Polo Taylforth’ as he prepares to fly back to England with her.

Kim’s earliest TV appearance was in the scrapyard sitcom, Steptoe and Son, when she was 15 years old. Aged 19, she starred as 'Janet' in the 1979 TV film The Knowledge with Mick Ford and Nigel Hawthorne before appearing with sister Gillian, in 1982, on the children's TV show On Safari and in the 1983 Minder episode ‘Senior Citizen Caine’.

She took a break from acting to pursue a career in the Metropolitan Police from 1984 to 1996.

As her tour came to an end, Kim – an animal lover who has taken part in many animal awareness campaigns – delightedly accepted the position of patron of the charity and left a

very special message to all at the finca: ‘What an amazing experience visiting the Finca today.

I was blown away be the dedication and work done by the workers and volunteers. All the animals were so happy, calm and peaceful which speaks volumes. I’m delighted and honoured to be patron of this wonderful charity. Xx’ After saying her goodbyes, Kim headed straight to Sunshine FM where she spoke about the dangers dogs face in the hot weather – see more on page 19.

Finca la Castellana is a registered charity committed to the welfare of animals in need.

At the finca, animals are taken in and provided with any veterinary care they might need by Eduardo’s Pets Veterinary Practice, along with love, care and routine and very often adopted.

The work of Finca la Castellana is not limited to the day-today running of the finca – which costs some €3,000 a month.

They work together with the Guardia Civil and the Policia Local to combat animal cruelty in the area and even provide blood donors to Eduardos Pets in emergency situations.

Bankia acquires BMN Spain's state-owned Bankia agreed on Tuesday to acquire Banco Mare Nostrum (BMN).

The acquisition with create Spain’s fourth-biggest lender amid consolidation in Europe's struggling banking sector. The new bank will hold around €223 billion euros worth of assets, Bankia said in a statement.

The two nationalised banks - both formed from the merger of several failed lenders - were bailed out at the height of the financial crisis with around €24 billion of public money after major losses on property loans.

Spain's Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB) manages the restructuring and resolution processes of credit institutions and said the Bankia deal would be regarded as ‘a way to recover public funds before a future divestment process.’

The state holds around 67 per cent of Bankia and 65 per cent of the smaller BMN. After the acquisiton, the FROB is expected to hold around 66.6 per cent of the new bank.

‘It was the right timing from a macroeconomic point of view due to the strengths of the Spanish economy and also due to the pace of the current reduction of the unemployment rate,’ Bankia Chief Executive Jose Sevilla is reported to have told analysts on a conference call.

The lenders agreed to a 7.8for-1 share swap deal, valuing BMN at around €825 million.

Bankia shares rose four per cent on Tuesday. In a statement to The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) , Bankia said it would issue a maximum of 205.7 million new shares to help finance the deal, which is expected to be finalised by the end of this year.

After years of consolidation, the number of lenders in Spain has shrunk from 55 in 2008 to 13 after the housing market bubble burst, triggering an almost fiveyear economic slump.

Eight arrested in Murcia fraud network bust Involving rehabilitation clinics, lawyers and medical practitioners.

by Tahnee Wright The network fraudulently billed insurance companies for medical services relating to road traffic accidents.

Over 65 people were arrested and 40 more investigated in the initial stages of the operation, which led officers to two rehabilitation clinics – one in Murcia and one in Yecla.

Investigations found that clinic owners, lawyers, physicians and physiotherapists worked together to systematically produce

false reports and invoices – submitting them to insurances companies to receive thousands of euros in compensation.

The reports and invoices related to real road traffic accidents, however victims were not made aware of the extent of the claims.

When questioned, the victims claimed that the reports and invoices did not correspond to actual medical services received.

The detainees are seven men and one woman, all of Spanish nationality except one of Peruvian nationality between the ages of 37 and 47.

Four-year-old falls A four-year-old girl fell from a first-floor apartment in the Murcian village of Llano de Brujas last Saturday – the Local Police of Murcia tweeted to confirm the girl suffered only minor injuries.

€7.8 million for damaged Murcia fruit Agroseguro has initiated the payment of indemnities to Murcian fruit growers whose crops were damaged in the early part of 2017.

The total of indemnities amount to €7.8 million.

Murcian fruit was affected by the adverse weather conditions the region experienced at the beginning of the year, especially the rainfall at the end of April.

Sources have indicated that over 5,000 hectares of fruit trees suffered.

Among the areas most affected were Rio Segura and the northeast and northwest.

90 per cent of the indemnities to be paid corresponds to peach trees (which includes peach, nectarine, Paraguayan and platerina) and apricot trees.

In the event of an earthquake…

Torrevieja’s Councillor of Security, Javier Mazanares recently announced the introduction of the Municipal Seismic Hazards Plan.

The plan will be disseminated amongst all residents and give clear directions on ‘how to act in the event of an earthquake’.

Mazanares has teamed up with Municipal Architect, Joaquin Blanco, farm manager Isidoro Carrillo and President of the Torrevieja 1829 Association (which references the city’s most intense earthquake), Vicente Moreno to deliver the plan, which will serve as an appendix to the security plan disseminated throughout the municipality.

The City Council will be responsible for hosting roadshows, ensuring all residents have available to them ‘knowledge that can save many lives’ said Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon.

Spain shuts down ISIS terror cell in Mallorca

by Tahnee Wright Spanish authorities have shut down a suspected ISIS terror cell in Mallorca in a series of raids across Europe.

A coordinated anti-terror operation saw officials swoop in to arrest six people for allegedly raising funds and recruiting fighters for ISIS, authorities in Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany said in statements on Wednesday.

According to Spanish authorities, four of the six were detained in Mallorca, while the others were taken into custody in the UK and Germany Spanish National Police posted video of the raids to their official YouTube account and said the investigation linking the group to ISIS started in 2015 when a website with several terrorist propaganda videos was discovered.

During the course of the two-year probe, authorities identified a UK-based Salafist imam who was allegedly orchestrating the production of online extremist propaganda.

The 44-year-old imam, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed because of ongoing proceedings, was detained on terrorist offenses at an address in Sparkhill, Birmingham, by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at the request of Spanish authorities.

According to Spanish police, the man is believed to be the group's spiritual leader and is known to have traveled to Mallorca on multiple occasions to set up the group that included the four who were arrested in Spain on Wednesday.

They added that the imam's public speeches had already put him on the radar of British and European security services.

The man taken into custody in Germany is also believed to have been working with the group and had taken part in several of their propaganda videos, according to the Spanish National Police.

Authorities took action across Europe on Wednesday after the investigation appeared to indicate that the group's fol-

lowing was growing as a result of increased social media activity and secret weekly meetings where they disseminated their extremist ideology.

No jump!

Spain says its police have been involved in the arrests of 178 suspected jihadis since the country raised its security alert to one step below the maximum in June 2015.

A teenager in Spain died in Cantabria, northern Spain after thinking she heard her bungee instructor say ‘now jump’, when he was meaning to say ‘no jump’. An instructor for bungee company Flowtrack has now appeared in court in after the horrific death of Dutch teen Vera Mol, who plunged to her death off the Cabezon de la Sal bridge aged 17 in 2015. The court was told the instructor's English language skills were ‘poor’ and Vera died due to a misunderstanding - his poor pronunciation in telling Vera not to jump was understood by her as ‘now jump’, before she took the fatal plunge.

Flowtrack's director will now be prosecuted for homicide through negligence, despite appealing a court ruling last year where it was argued Vera jumped before she was told to. ‘The use of the poor English 'No jump' could perfectly well be understood as an explicit order to jump by the victim,’ the judgement said. Vera hadn't been attached to a safety line and was underage, it has been ruled, with the judge saying the instructor should have checked for ID to make sure she was at least 18 years old. Bungee jumping was also prohibited from the bridge in question under Spanish regulations.

Judge in Spain Shark sightings orders exhumation of terrify tourists Salvador Dali’s body in Mallorca

Tourists were seen fleeing a busy Mallorca beach last weekend after a shark swam to the water's edge and thrashed around in the shallows.

The incident - which took place last Sunday at Platja de Palma - was caught on video and shared thousands of times on social media.

It was one of several shark sightings on Mallorcan beaches over the weekend.

Three unidentified species of shark were spotted at another nearby beach last Sunday, with bathers called out of the water by lifeguards - no injuries were reported.

More than 40 species of shark are thought to inhabit the Mediterranean and while attacks on humans are extremely rare, they do occur.

Last month a blue shark was believed to have attacked a bather in Ibiza, leaving her wounded.

by Tahnee Wright A 60-year-old Spanish woman has won a court case resulting in a judicial order to have the body of surrealist painter Salvador Dali exhumed.

Maria Pilar Abel Martinez claims there is a possibility Dali was her father and the body will therefore be subject to a DNA extraction.

Dali died of heart failure in 1989 aged 85 and was previously thought to be childless - even largely celibate – however Ms Martinez, a tarot card reader, has been claiming since 2007 that her mother told her at an early age of a short-lived, secret affair with the artist in the mid-1950s.

Ms Martinez says her grandmother knew of the affair and would often tell her that she was ‘strange, like your father.’

Dali’s work was worth hundreds of millions of euros collectively and he bequeathed it all to the Spanish state upon his death.

Ms Martinez, a divorced mother of four, has said her main goal is to establish whether or not Dali was her father, but after bringing a lawsuit in 2015, she told the New York Times that she was also seeking ‘whatever corresponds to me.’

Ms Martinez has worked as a tarot card reader for decades, sometimes appearing on television, but she also told the Times that she did not read her own cards and that exhumation of Dali’s body was necessary to confirm her

lineage once and for all.

Dali is buried under the theatre in his Catalonian home town of Figueres, which was converted into a museum for his work and is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions.

In life, Dali was known to be highly eccentric, as was his wife, Gala. For much of their married life they lived separately, with Gala residing in a medieval castle in a small village and Dali allowed to visit only upon her written invitation.

Madrid prepares for WorldPride

Madrid City Council raised a giant rainbow flag on Monday to show support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, as WorldPride 2017 takes place in the capital from June 23 to July 2.

The flag, made with more than 100,000 ribbons tied by citizens, is 12 metres long and will hang over the facade of the city hall during the festival.

Its colours represent life (red), healing (orange), sunlight (yellow), nature (green), harmony/ peace (blue) and spirit (purple).

The WorldPride festival is held every few years in a different international city and is expected to draw up to three million people to the streets of Chueca, a world-famous gay neighborhood in central Madrid.

A fire in the castle in 1984, two years after Gala's death, almost killed Dali.

An assistant of his, Robert Descharnes, pulled him out of the burning building.

Dali was hospitalised and fed by nasal tubes. In 2007, Ms Martinez contacted Descharnes, who still was in possession of some of the nasal tubes. He agreed to submit them for a DNA test, but the results were inconclusive.

The date for the exhumation has not yet been set.

Egg-throwing record cracked A New Zealand duo have cracked the record for the longest throw and catch of an egg.

Nick Hornstein and Robbie Hollander's 81-metre effort was the highlight of the annual World EggThrowing Championships, held in the English village of Swaton.

Sunday's event also saw a victory for Canada, with Julie Moen winning the Egg Russian Roulette challenge. The messy challenge sees two players, sitting opposite each other, taking it in turn to pick from six eggs, five boiled and one raw, and smashing them on their heads. Whoever avoids the raw egg is declared winner.

Boy travels from Morocco to Spain underneath a bus A boy travelled at least 230 kilometers from Morocco to Spain hanging underneath a bus, officials said on Monday, in another example of desperate measures taken by migrants to get to Europe.

Emergency services in Seville tweeted a video of the boy being led away from a bus they said came from Tangier, some 230 kilometers away, wearing a dirtied white t-shirt.

They said he had been taken to hospital but was in good condition. A police spokesman told global news agency AFP that the boy appeared to be Moroccan, but said he had been told the bus came from Tetouan, another Moroccan city even further away than Tangier. “The bus arrived in Seville and as the driver went to let the passengers out, he noted something strange,” the spokesman said.

“He called the police and firefighters and they found the boy who was holding onto the bottom of the bus,” he added.

Justice at last

Six charged in connection with Hillsborough stadium tragedy.

by Tahnee Wright British prosecutors charged six people, including four former senior police officials, on Wednesday in connection with the deaths of 96 fans at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, England, in 1989.

The victims, all Liverpool supporters, died in an overcrowded, fenced-in enclosure at the stadium during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Police at first blamed the tragedy on drunken fans, an explanation that was always rejected by the friends and families of the victims and the wider Liverpool community who spent decades campaigning for ‘justice for the 96’.

In April 2016, a two-year inquest found that the fans had been ‘unlawfully killed’, citing errors or omissions by the police in planning and executing security for the match on April 15, 1989.

In particular, the inquest faulted the actions of commanding officers and left to prosecutors the decision whether to file criminal charges and on Wednesday, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that it would.

Spanish coastguards rescue 200 migrants

More than 200 migrants were rescued by Spanish coastguards last Saturday as they attempted crossing the Mediterranean from north Africa to Spain.

Most of the migrants were from sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb and were rescued from five vessels in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, which separates Spain from Morocco.

A spokesman told the Spanish press dozens were rescued south of Gibraltar from three boats.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 3,314 people have reached Spain by sea between January 1 and April 30 this year.

Last Thursday, more than 400 migrants were reported rescued by the Spanish sea rescue service.

At least 2,018 people have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year, according to IOM’s latest report.

Five other men also face charges: Graham Henry Mackrell, a former secretary of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, which operates Hillsborough Stadium; Peter Metcalf, a lawyer who represented the South Yorkshire Police; and three other former high-ranking police officers — Norman Bettison, Donald Denton and Alan Foster.

"I have decided that there is sufficient evidence to charge six individuals with criminal offences," said Sue Hemming, head of the special crime and counterterrorism division at the Crown Prosecution Service, in a statement.

Relatives of the victims, who were told of the decision in private shortly before it was made public, embraced outside the building where they were briefed in Warrington, northern England.

British police believe 80 people died or are missing presumed dead after the Grenfell Tower blaze two weeks ago, but it will be many months before the full death toll is known, the officer leading the investigation said in a statement on Wednesday.

Fiona McCormack also said police believed no one survived in 23 of the London social housing block's 129 apartments.

Police have identified and spoken to at least one person from each of the other flats.

She said 60 companies were helping police with their investigation.

The previously given death toll had been 79.

A summer of tropical nights ahead

by Andy Mansell Elche and Alicante were the second and third hottest places in Spain this week, according to figures released by the country’s meteorological department.

On Wednesday, a day of intense heat and scorching sun, the temperature in Elche peaked at 35.2C, with nearby Alicante a fraction behind at 35.1C. Analysing the data, Jorge Olcina, director of the Laboratory of Climatología of the University of Alicante, explained that the high temperatures are being caused by a westerly wind, bringing intensely hot air from the interior of the country, to the normally cooler coastal areas.

On Wednesday, temperatures failed to drop below 26C throughout the whole day, bringing the hottest night of the year so far to the province.

With sea temperatures at least two degrees warmer than normal for this time of year, owing to the recent prolonged heatwave, the climatologist predicts warmer nights ahead.

Olcina, attempting to predict long range forecasts with members of the Spanish press, said, “Curiously, although daytime temperatures are high and intense, they are not breaking any records” he explained.

“However, night temperatures are unlikely to drop below 22.0C for the foreseeable future, because the temperature of the Mediterranean water is above 26C at the moment, which will lead to a summer of continuous tropical nights on the coast," said Olcina.

Health officials are warning that dehydration is the greatest risk on warmer than average nights, when temperatures remain high.

Early warning signs of dehydration are, feeling thirsty and lightheaded; a dry mouth, tiredness, having dark coloured, strong-smelling urine and passing urine less often than usual.

Babies are particularly vulnerable and may be suffering if they have a sunken soft spot (fontanelle) on their head; have few or no tears when they cry; have fewer wet nappies (nappies will feel lighter) and are extra drowsy.

They suggest keeping a bottle of water with you at all times to sip and rehydrate throughout the day and to make sure children and older people are well hydrated before they sleep.

Warmer than average sea temperatures will lead to a summer of tropical nights for the Costa Blanca coast

Torrevieja are PROUD Hundreds of people attended Torrevieja’s first PRIDE event last Saturday.

A large stage was set up on the Paseo Vistalegre where a rainbow flag flew.

The event was hosted by singer, actor and transvestite Jose Ignacio Galan, better known as Nacha La Macha, who read an LGBT manifesto. Nacha La Mancha starred in the Madrid PRIDE line-up last year and this year criticised Spain’s ‘age-old mentality’ towards the LGBT community, calling for the application of the Social Equality Law processed in the Valencian Courts in 2016. The event was celebrated alongside ‘Torrevieja Holi’ – a festival of Hindu origin. Holi is also called 'The Festival of Colours' and people celebrate the festival by smearing each other with paint and throwing coloured powder and dye around in an atmosphere of great good humour.

DJ Kevin Edwards closed the evening’s entertainment with his crowd-pleasing show ‘Wild’.

Tiger mosquitos love Murcia

by Andy Mansell A scientific study, published this week reveals that the fearsome tiger mosquito, with its particularly irritating bite, has taken root in the Murcia region.

They are prevalent throughout the region, in a flower pot on a ninth floor balcony in La manga, in water accumulated in a thrown away plastic carton in Cartagena, in puddles made by water sprinklers in a Murcia City park, or in the residue water left in a mop bucket after mopping the patio at a Villa inland of Torrevieja.

These are just some of the breeding grounds of the dreaded insect, originating in South East Asia and first detected in the Murcia region in 2010.

This feared insect, carrier of a number of diseases, needs only the smallest place to reproduce, according to researchers from the Zoological and Anthropology Department of Murcia University, Francisco Collantes and Juan Antonio Delgado, who published their studies.

The scientists, who have studied the larvae of the mosquito, explained that, the female is capable of laying more than 200 eggs in one week in confined spaces.

“She requires, just three things in life to produce prodigiously, stagnant water, regular temperatures over 28C and victims close by for a regular supply of human or animal blood,” said Professor Delgado.

Tiger mosquitos, first appeared on the

Mediterranean coastal regions in 2004 in Barcelona, and since then they have followed the A-7 motorway on cars with destinations either side of the motorway.

The scientists have calculated that every year some 800,000 tiger mosquitoes stowaway on vehicles.

Professor Collantes, confirmed that this year it’s presence has been confirmed in several municipalities: “In Aguilas, Mazarron, Cartagena, Murcia, Alcantarilla, Torres de Cotillas, Molina de Segura and San Pedro del Pinatar, we have obtained evidence of larvae, and we expect sightings soon in Bullas, Totana, Abanilla. Lorca, Librilla, Ceutí and Lorqui”.

He said, “A positive sighting means the tiger mosquitoes are arriving in force.”

After they appeared in the Murcia re-

gion, seven years ago, the mosquitos remained owing to the consistently warmer temperatures ideal for breeding.

Their reproductive cycle in the region is longer than in other areas, as the summer heat starts in April and is dominant over the summer months of July, August and September, continuing into October when the cold causes its eradication.

However, Collantes issued a stark warning “If our autumn is warmer, we can expect some to survive until November.” He said.

Fortunately for residents and tourist in the region, the tiger mosquito bite, although nasty and more painful than normal bites, does not carry the tropical diseases such as Zika, Dengue or Chikungunya viruses, which have caused epidemics in more tropical countries.

200 birds rescued in two weeks The Centro De Recuperacion De Fauna El Valle in Murcia has reported record figures of common swifts and pallid swifts being brought in to the wildlife rescue centre in the past two weeks.

The centre has seen over 200 of the birds, all in different stages of growth.

The swifts are in full reproductive phase and are likely to have been affected by the high temperatures recorded across the region – many chicks having jumped from their nests normally located under the roofs of houses.

The Director of Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosaura stressed ‘the importance of citizen collaboration to avoid the death of these birds’ and thanked the staff at the wildlife rescue centre for their work to ensure ‘these birds will be able to return to their natural environment once fully grown.’

Rosaura reminded all citizens: ‘If you find one of these birds, it is best to place it in a cardboard box. Do not attempt to feed it, instead take it to the wildlife rescue centre as soon as possible.’

When a bird arrives at the centre, it is examined and put on an appropriate treatment plan. Depending on its age and the extent (if any) of its injuries, recovery time is between one and four weeks.

Kids forest fire averted

by Andy Mansell Two children playing with firecrackers on Wednesday evening almost caused a major forest fire in the grounds of the San Fernando castle in Alicante.

A 250 square metre piece of scrubland caught alight after a spark from one of the boys firecrackers caught some dry vegetation.

Two firetrucks and nine firefighters from the Alicante division, were called to the fire, which occurred around 18.00h and were able to extinguish the flames quickly.

Local police officers were called to interview and take statements from the two children, who admitted they had been playing with firecrackers in the nearby vicinity.

The current drought and accompanying heatwave have forced fire authorities to warn against using incendiary products such as firecrackers and fireworks, except at organised events where appropriate safety measures are taken.

The level 3 forest fire warning has banned any burning of agricultural debris throughout the region, even on days when permits have already been granted.

A week to go

Torrevieja’s Councillor of Employment, Victor Ferrandez confirmed earlier this week that the deadline for young people of the municipality to apply to the incentive programme through which the City Council will recruit for 91 vacancies is Monday July 10.

The Ministry of Employment has granted over €1.4 million towards the 91 12month contracts.

The vacancies are for both qualified and unqualified people – however Ferrandez stressed that all applicants must be registered in the Servef system as jobseekers.

Applications can be made through the Sistema Nacional de Garantia Juvenil (National System of Youth Guarantee) in the Servef office or in the Agencia de Desarrollo Local (Local Development Agency).

5,000kg of rubbish collected from streets of La Paz The Department of Development, led by Roque Ortiz and road cleaning contractors, Ferrovial Services, ran a special campaign on Monday, collecting more than 5,000 kilograms of scrap, debris and other bulky items in the neighbourhoods of La Paz. From sunrise, five workers, three open box trucks and two vans with a capacity of 7m3 patrolled the areas surrounding Avenida de la Fama, Primero de Mayo, Pablo VI and La Paz. Amongst the collected scrap, debris and items were barbecues, doors, panels, shopping trolleys and various appliances. The collection was followed by the regular cleaning of the areas, which is carried out six days a week, from Monday to Saturday. The collection of goods is carried out three times a week.

Everything collected was transferred to the Canada Hermosa site to be separated and classified before being sent on to recycling plants.

Timber!

Two elm trees fell on Tuesday on carril Carceles in Beniajan.

They were healthy but the inclination of the hill on which they were situated, together with their weight caused them to topple.

One fell straight and the other fell at an angle and had to be felled.

Traffic was stopped whilst the elms were removed from the road.

The incident caused damage to public lighting and telephone lines that pass through the area, as well as a metal fence that protects the perimeter of a firewood company across the street.

Treats for Elche teens

The 1600 euros raised will go to entertain the children during summer

by Andy Mansell The first charity fund-raising night at Quesada Fish and Chips Restaurant, was a huge success, raising 1,607 euros for the Children in the Care Home at Elche. Most of the money will be added to funds recently handed over by Stevie Spit and used to help keep 18 teenagers occupied during the 3 month summer holiday period.

Staff at the home, who are charged

with this difficult task, have a full programme of events planned for the youngsters.

These include visits to museums, Rio Safari, cinema, aquapark and more, and include treats for the children during these excursions. Many of these young people would not get these opportunities in their normal family life, so their excitement is palpable.

The next fund-raising night at Quesada Fish & Chips is on Wednesday July

9, with entertainment by the ever popular, Woody & the Peckers.

Tickets, including a 2 course meal, are just 10 euros, and can be bought from the Restaurant, Post Room Benijofar, The Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada.

Tickets will be limited, to ensure space and comfort for all diners, so early booking is advised. Money raised on this night will be donated to Torrevieja Stroke Support.

Ahoy me Torrevieja hearties Ship mates of The Royal Naval Association, Torrevieja Branch met for their monthly Menu del Dia recently, enjoying each others company and a jolly good old chin wag.

Apart from their regular eating and drinking frivolities, the association holds a general meeting on the first Wednesday of every month at 5.00pm in bar/ restaurante El Paraiso near to Carrefour in Torrevieja.

The Royal Naval Association Standard was recently paraded in Benidorm when members of the group were invited by the Spanish Codex Belix Battle Reenactment Association to attend their re-enactment of The D Day Normandy Landings on June 6 1944.

The group were thrilled to be part of the inaugural event and a good time was had by all those who attended and enjoyed the excellent Spanish hospitality.

‘Mack and Mabel’ raises 3500 euros

by Andy Mansell The talented thespians at Studio32 were delighted to announce that their recent production of ‘Mack and Mabel’ raised over 3,500 euros for local charities.

Studio32’s chairman Philip Wilson recently visited San Fulgencio Town Hall to meet Benjamin Villena Rodriguez, President of the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Society.

Benjamin thanked Studio32 for their continued support of the charity, which provides help in the community to families and individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s.

Studio32 happily handed over 2,250 euros for this deserving charity, plus a further 250 euros towards the purchase of instruments and music for students, to Rosa Maria Mira from the San Fulgencio music school.

Philip explained a little about the history of the musical theatre group, “Studio32 was set up four years ago to bring high quality full-scale musical theatre to the Costa Blanca, and through doing so enable us to support local charities” he said.

“Everyone in the company worked extremely hard to make this show a great success and I’m very proud of them all. In only 4 years we’ve raised over 20,000 euros for local charities, and we will continue to support AFA San Fulgencio and local good causes in the coming year.”

He was also happy to reveal what is next on the agenda for this talented theatre company.

They have just announced their winter show, the clas-

sic Irving Berlin show “White Christmas”, which will be performed from Wednesday November 29 to Saturday December 2 at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio.

69 youngsters set off for Europe 69 Murcian young people will partake in cultural exchanges this summer across 11 European cities.

The City Council has awarded to €70,000, one-year contract to Viajes Halcon S, extendable for a further year.

Each trip costs €225 (€75 less than in 2016) and last for between seven and nine days, depending on the destination.

Destinations include Italy, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania, Cyprus and Slovakia.

Specsavers Opticas collaborate in campaign to help the deaf-blind

by Staff Reporter As the International Day of Deafblindness was celebrated on Tuesday, Marcelo Rosado, ONCE representative for Andalucia, Ceuta and Melilla and Jose Angel MoralTajadura, Retail and Business Development Manager for Specsavers Spain held a press conference to announce a new fundraising campaign, which will launch at Specsavers Opticas stores across Spain next Monday.

Specsavers Opticas will be supporting the ONCE Foundation for the Deaf-Blind (La Fundacion ONCE para la Atencion de Personas con Sordoceguera - FOAPS) over the next six months - offering free comprehensive eye tests at all eight of their opticians and asking patients to donate €1 to FOAPS after their test until the end of the year.

Their aim is to raise €6,000 to fund 400 hours of interpreting for the deaf-blind.

All funds raised will be donated to FOAPS to fund interpreters who are crucial to allow deaf-blind people to lead a full life and communicate.

This is part of FOAPS’ 10-year anniversary campaign to raise awareness of the issues that deaf blind people face and boost funding so they can help more of these vulnerable people who, without their help, would be totally isolated.

Specsavers’ Retail and Business Development Manager Jose Angel Moral-Tajadura commented: ‘One of our key objectives in Spain has been to collaborate with an organisation such as ONCE, which is so important in helping people with sight loss. I hope that this collaboration won’t just last for 6 months and that we will collaborate with ONCE and their

foundations over the long term.’

He added that his commitment was to beat their €6,000 target and that he would be working closely with all the stores so that in January he can return to ONCE and celebrate the end of a highly successful campaign.

‘Our eye tests are comprehensive and centred around professionalism and clinical care. We offer eye tests of the back of the eye and take digital retinal photography, as well as other tests which can detect signs related to glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other issues. These issues, if not caught early and referred to an ophthalmologist, can cause partial or total sight loss, problems which ONCE understand very well’, he explained.

ONCE representative Marcelo Rosado explained the very important work that the FOAPS interpreters undertake. He added that there are 100 interpreters working in Spain, offering a very personalised service depending on the level of visual and hearing loss and the different personal situations of each individual.

Rosado said that FOAPS is currently offering interpreter services to 377 people; 260 adults and 117 children – more than 46,000 hours in 2017.

‘As we add more activities there are more needs and so initiatives such as this one from Specsavers Opticas are very important.’

Those who wish to participate in the campaign should visit their nearest Specsavers Opticas store for a comprehensive eye test and donate just €1 between July and December 2017.

In the event of an earthquake…

Torrevieja’s Councillor of Security, Javier Mazanares recently announced the introduction of the Municipal Seismic Hazards Plan.

The plan will be disseminated amongst all residents and give clear directions on ‘how to act in the event of an earthquake’.

Mazanares has teamed up with Municipal Architect, Joaquin Blanco, farm manager Isidoro Carrillo and President of the Torrevieja 1829 Association (which references the city’s most intense earthquake), Vicente Moreno to deliver the plan, which will serve as an appendix to the security plan disseminated throughout the municipality.

The City Council will be responsible for hosting roadshows, ensuring all residents have available to them ‘knowledge that can save many lives’ said Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon.

It’s getting hot out here

by Tahnee Wright As English actress Kim Taylforth explained in her interview with Sunshine FM on Tuesday, whilst the hot weather invites everyone to spend more time outside, walking your dog at this time of year can be quite dangerous in certain circumstances.

As an owner, you need to be vigilant to ensure your dog is always protected and RTN are on hand with some top tips: Sunstroke, overheating and sunburn Dogs are susceptible to sunburn, just like humans. Although it is true the coat blocks rays to a certain extent, the skin underneath can still get severely burnt. Areas that aren’t protected by a thick layer of fur such as the nose or stomach are even more at risk. To combat sunburn, rub some sun cream into your dog’s most vulnerable areas and ensure they don’t stay out in the sun too long. Ask your vet about the best type to use.

Dogs are also at risk of suffering from sunstroke, which happens when they are unable to effectively regulate their body temperature. They are only able to sweat through their paws rather than their entire body, unlike humans, so they need to expel heat through panting. However, this is ineffective if they are drawing in warmer air than they are releasing. Their fur coats only add to the problem by retaining heat and preventing its expulsion.

You need to watch out for signs that your dog is overheating or suffering from sunstroke. These include excessive panting, pale or dry gums, hyperventilation, increased salivation, diarrhoea, vomiting, an increased heartbeat, weakness, confusion and also rectal bleeding.

Act immediately if your dog begins to show any of these symptoms. Take them to a shaded area so they can start to cool down and if possible, use a fan to reduce their temperature further. Place cool, wet towels on their body, especially the neck, under the armpits and between the hind legs. You can also wet their ears and paw pads. Provide your pet with water but don’t allow them to gulp it down too quickly, as they may suck it into the lungs. If they won’t drink, wet their

tongue with the water instead. Whatever you do, don’t give a dog in this situation any ice, as it could shock the system.

Take them to a vet as quickly as possible, and call beforehand so they can adequately prepare for an examination.

Dehydration It can be easy for your pet to become dehydrated whilst walking. This is especially likely if there is no shade for them to cool down in and they have been on a long walk in high heat. Signs of dehydration include sunken eyes, loss of appetite, lethargy, excessive drooling and urination, loose skin, weak pulse, a dry mouth and depression, amongst others.

You need to ensure enough fresh, cool water is available to keep them hydrated, so leave multiple bowls around the house.

If they are going to be left outside for a while, make sure there are enough shaded areas and water sources. Use sturdy bowls to deter spillages and to prevent them from getting knocked over. When supervised, leave a paddling pool for your dog to cool off in should they need to. Always bring water whenever you go out walking, and remember to give them some at regular intervals so they can remain hydrated throughout the day.

Burnt feet You will forget how hot tar can become underfoot, but dogs will feel the heat on the pads of their paws. Pavements, cobbles and other areas can be uncomfortably hot for your dog to tread on during summer, and may even burn their feet.

To avoid any problems, change the time of day you walk your dog. Don’t take them out at midday when the sun is highest in the sky, as this is the hottest period. Instead, walk them early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground is cooler. You could also buy some boots for your dog that would protect their feet.

Parasites, insects and plants Summer is the optimum time for parasites to multiply and potentially harm your pet. Ticks hide in long grass and mos-

quitoes feed on the blood of their host. These are just two of the parasites that may be encountered when out walking, but there are many more. They can transmit infection, disease and other parasites such as worms, so always be mindful of any potential contact with them.

Furthermore, insects and larger animals could sting or bite your dog when out walking. Bees, wasps and horse flies are examples of insects they may come across. They can also be bitten by a grass snake if they unwittingly disturb one, although this is uncommon.

Various flowers and plants in bloom during the spring and summer months can also pose a threat to your pet should they eat them. You need to supervise carefully when out walking by making sure they don’t ingest any flowers or plants that will harm them, or get bitten or stung by any insects. Should this happen, take your pet to the vet immediately. Some flowers are poisonous, whilst your pet may experience an allergic reaction to some insect bites or stings. Even though they may not exhibit signs immediately you don’t want to take any chances, and symptoms may only begin to appear some time later.

“I’m going to” and negatives Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Let’s start this week with some sentences which revise what we learnt in the previous article. They can all build together very simply, by combining “I” words (quiero – I want, necesito – I need, puedo – I can) with verbs in their basic, or infinitive, form, that is the form that ends in “–ar”,”-er” or “–ir”.

QUIERO TRABAJAR I want to work.

NECESITO COCINAR I need to cook.

PUEDO BAILAR I can dance.

NECESITO COMER TRES VECES AL DÍA I need to eat three times a day.

QUIERO JUGAR OTRA VEZ I want to play again.

PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA I can open the door.

Now we are going to introduce another “I” expression, which works in exactly the same way as the ones we have already seen. This time it consists of two words - VOY A and it means “I’m going to”.

“I am going to” is rather a long expression in English, but it cannot be translated word for word into Spanish. We need to think about the concept it expresses, which is related to my “intention” to do something.

When we want to express our intention in Spanish these are the two words we should use VOY A, and we then follow them with any infinitive verb in just the same way as before. For example: VOY A COCINAR (I’m going to cook) VOY A ABRIR (I’m going to open) One of the most important keys to learning Spanish is to realize that we cannot translate word for word.

This is the big mistake that many people make. In actual fact, most of our confusion about Spanish comes from our insistence on trying to translate literally all the time when it is the idea behind the words which

is the important thing. Something else you may have noticed is that the Spanish use fewer words than English to express the same ideas, which is amazing in itself when you think how much they like speaking.

Here are some more sentences for you to translate into English. This time I will put the answers at the end of the article.

QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA VOY A COMER AHORA NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL Now we’re going to look at something new, which we can do without needing to learn any new words at all. This is absolutely true and just shows how easy basic Spanish really is. Here it is – if you put the word NO in front of any of your new sentences you instantly make them negative. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is remarkably simple and much easier than English. For example:.

VOY A COCINAR I’m going to cook NO VOY A COCINAR I’m not going to cook NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I need to change money NO NECESITO CAMBIAR DINERO I don’t need to change money QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I want to go back to England NO QUIERO VOLVER A INGLATERRA I don’t want to go back to England PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ

I can sleep here NO PUEDO DORMIR AQUÍ I can’t sleep here Please take a second to look at the way these negative forms are made in English. “I’m not going to”, “I

don’t need to” “I can’t”. Imagine being a foreigner trying to learn English, you have to learn lots of different ways of making negatives, whereas in Spanish you only ever have to put NO in front of the verb – and Bob’s your uncle, you’ve made your sentence negative.

You see – I told you it was easy!

Now here are the answers to the sentences above: QUIERO BAILAR CONTIGO: “I want to dance with you” (You never know when this phrase might come in handy) PUEDO TRABAJAR MAÑANA. “I can work tomorrow” (Anathema to some people, but a few of us still have to do it!)

VOY A COMER AHORA. “I am going to eat now” (We could also translate this “I’m going to have lunch now” as the Spanish also use “COMER” to refer to having their big midday meal.)

NECESITO APRENDER ESPAÑOL. “I need to learn Spanish” (You can’t argue with that really, and it could be useful when you want to encourage a Spanish person to actually speak to you in Spanish rather than English which tends to happen round here more and more).

Now here are some sentences to think about for next week. This time you’re going to translate four short sentences from English into Spanish. The basic structures are exactly as we’ve learnt them so far – there are no tricks, and the answers will appear next week!

I don’t want to speak English.

I’m not going to open the door.

I can’t cook very well.

I need to work a little.

Book Review

The Lodger by C.L.Taylor My world becomes dark and loud as I'm tossed, turned and twisted. Over and over I turn, my breath burning in my lungs, the river roaring in my ears.

Having read a couple of books by Cally which I have reviewed recently, I must admit that I've got a soft spot for dysfunctional people and families with unstable and unhappy relationships. It mirrors the lives of many of us. Some of us don't seem to get it right with the happy ever after bit.

When 25 year old Joe is introduced you get the feeling that he is infatuated with Laura, the protagonist. Joe is Ian's brother, labelled the lady-killer, vivacious, outspoken and the look before you leap type, whatever that means! So, is he presented as a good guy or a bad one? Find out.

Whilst at work, Laura receives an email from Ian, an old flame from her university days asking if she can put up Joe for a couple of nights because he has just been kicked out of his flat. The "chemistry wasn't there" between Ian and Laura but the pair have remained on close terms. Laura has two spare rooms but seems reluctant to put him up after recent traumatic events which focus the story on the tragic death of Steven, her fiance.

"The river snatched him from me and

there was nothing I could do but watch as the current carried him away." Be warned: never take things at face value with Cally.

When she develops her characters we may see polar opposites: good and evil as she slowly reveals the darker side of the villains.

Significantly, the story begins on the anniversary of Steven's death. A group of them: Ian, his wife, Sarah, brother Joe, Laura and fiance were holidaying in Wales, ready to have a picnic by the river when he drowned. Steven couldn't swim, although the others still encouraged him to get into the water. Then the tragedy happened.

They met in Steven's favourite pub to remember him. Laura had been suffering flashbacks of the event which seemed to have paralysed her. Ian tried to console her by telling her that they were all responsible for his death. Too many memories "locked within its walls" and before long Laura made the painful decision to sell the house. We soon become aware of Laura's paranoia that she is being watched: "I don't feel right and I can't shake the feeling that something, or

someone is in my house" Returning from work one day, she opens the door and calls out, convinced that someone is inside. When she sees half a dozen cds scattered on the floor she is reminded of one of Steven's habits and panics. When she is more rational, she realises that she has been burgled so she makes the decision to let Joe stay with her to make her feel safe. In her paranoia she sees Joe wearing Steven's dressing gown and this freaks her out. In her distress, her body ragdoll limp, threw her off balance, knowing that she had given away all of Steven's clothing to a charity shop months ago.

"I can't play act being a couple, no matter how innocent, when the ghost of Steven haunts every room of this house." A mysterious character has been documenting his life with Laura in a diary and it proves to be difficult to stomach. “Phew! It ain’t ‘arf hot”, is a well-used expression by holiday makers as they arrived on the Costa’s, during July and August. “I really don’t know how the locals put up with it” you can hear people say, “the intensity of the sun, and particularly the long hot nights, make it difficult to sleep”.

At the same time as many Spanish towns and cities, like Sevilla who recorded a temperature of more than 50c, there are many other places apart from the Mediterranean and around the world are undergoing intense heat, even Britain has hit 34c the hottest it’s been in more than 40 years, while across the globe in countries like Brazil and Chile downpours have brought floods with landslides in China, has the world’s weather gone mad?

Whenever the word environment or global warming is mentioned, peoples eyes glaze over, “Oh yes, they say, global warming what rubbish, soon we will all burn to a cinder ha,ha, it’s an age old bit of nonsense ” they say.

Well folks I hope I don't bore you to tears, but I have some very important news for you, so if you are a sensible person with families maybe grandchildren growing up I ask you to read on.

Apart from being a journalist, I’m also a professor of natural sciences and environmental issues, also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society I have travelled as Far East to China and as far West to the Hawaiian Islands, up to the Arctic Circle and as far South as the Antarctic, this during a period of twenty three years, so I think I am reasonably qualified to write about the scale of damage to our world.

A few weeks ago Donald trump marched out on the Paris climate agreement meeting before he could sign, only he and two other countries failed to sign after it had already been ratified by 195 countries who recognise the overwhelming evidence to reduce harmful gases that is poisoning the atmosphere.

During Trumps election campaign he promised out of work Americans more jobs, so since his election victory he has employed more coal miners and more people to work in the power industry, now America can say that they have more employed people then they have had for many years.

Thousands of scientists from all over the world for years have been trying to understand what more we have to do to combat the serious downturn of the planets environment. Some scientists have even suggested that in not to many years to come most humans will have

to wear space type clothes so that they can cope with the intense heat and rays from the sun, and the obnoxious gases being released by the power stations around the world.

Certain countries the Far East such as Vietnam most people wear large straw hats and long sleeved shirts and long skirts when they go out into the street, this is their simple way for them to protect themselves, many Chinese wear masks as the air pollution in Most cities is desperately bad for the health.

I have witnessed huge icebergs split apart in the Arctic circle crumble into the sea, recently a village in Greenland was devastated when a tsunami caused by a falling splintered iceberg had swept their village away killing many inhabitants, the same happens in the Antarctic as huge pieces of ice crash down and become enveloped by the warming sea this is known as calving, with then huge ice flows threatening all that lays before it. I have walked on the millions of years old Briksdal glacier in Norway and watched as large parts of the glacier is melting into the sea, the glacier had been greatly reduced in size by the warmer climate.

Islands as far away in the Indian Ocean have been effected by rising tides such as the Maldives, the Seychelles and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific the highest point on some of these Island is only a few feet above the water line, the Maldives Islands West of India is

only 1.3 metres above sea level, a rise of three feet would submerge all of the 1100 Islands, with about 325 thousand inhabitants.

The Seychelles has a population of around 87.122 thousand inhabitants, all of these could be affected during a big surge, as with hundreds of other low lying Islands and main lands could be swamped by rising sea levels.

In the last twenty years a large hole appeared in the ozone layer above the Artic allowing the intense heat from the Sun to disturb our weather patterns, now there is evidence that the hole is closing, without any real explanation, this has happened before however it reopened again.

I’ve spent a long time in Central and East Africa such as Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Tanzania, in some of these places rain fall has been almost non-existent, crops have died and many people are undergoing starvation as famine ravages their families, I once acted as an Escort to take 25 lorries with 600 tonnes of grain with the World Food Programme of the United Nations from Kampala to Ayod in the Sudan, and wrote a book called the Wages of Fear I survived a life threatening journey through barren wastes and the ongoing war in Southern Sudan.

The world’s wildlife has also suffered greatly at our hands over the last 40 or 50 decades, many animals hunted to extinction, such as elephants and rhinos now whales are being washed up after they choke to death on plastic bags dumped by lazy or stupid people the same fate goes for dolphins and other large sea life.

Certainly our throw away style and the amount of cars on the roads, has gone a long way to disturbing the changing pattern of the weather and it that has become the most unpredictable part of our lives.

As far as I’m concerned the sun has become infinitely hotter, with temperatures around the Mediterranean that have been blistering hot, down pours in countries that have hacked their forest to pieces.

I will almost certainly not be around when the time comes when people will greet each other on the streets dressed like astronauts, or have to cower in the shade, so in the meantime I’m off to my terrace with a large gin and tonic and a huge amount of ice, sit under a parasol and think about all my scientific colleagues around the world who are striving to come up with a solution to make the earth more bearable in the summer. The freedom of the press mantra is fake news as news media is rigidly controlled. Things actually got worse since former New York Tribune editor John Swinton, addressing a Press Association convention in 1893, said; “There is no such thing as an independent Press.

If you express an honest opinion, you know beforehand it would never appear in print.”

NATO conflicts turned out to be disasters. U.S inspired conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria alone put 20.9 million refugees on the road to nowhere. Libya and media hyped and laundered UK Foreign Secretary William Hague

and his military henchmen.

If we had a genuinely free media these hapless goons would be vigorously questioned by non-partisan presenters and audiences that have not been vetted beforehand.

Can you recall genuine debate in which those opposed to non-European or refugee displacement was allowed to mirror the host people’s disenchantment? I can’t either. Did a single media disclose that a recent pro-refugee demo in Madrid was NGO and cash sponsored?

We are all negatively affected by the European Union’s anti-Russian trade sanctions. Embargoes rebounded catastrophically. I do not recall a member of the hapless political elite being robustly questioned on this hot topic.

There are honest journalists but an open mind and mouth often ends in death or exile. Former editor of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “I’ve been a journalist for about 25 years, and I’ve been educated to lie, to betray, and not to tell the truth to the public.”

Soon afterwards, in full health, 56year old Dr Udo Ulfkotte died. So did former CIA Director William Colby after saying, “The CIA owns everyone of any significance in the major media.”

Australian investigative journalist John Pilger: “We have got to stop using the term mainstream (media). It is actually an extreme. What could be more extreme than institutions that popularise rapacious wars and deceive about economic policy?”

Fernando Casado, Spanish analyst and legal expert: “Some journalists are quite open-minded and aware of the real situation, but

have no choice but to write what is expected of them by their editors in order to make both ends meet and have a decent salary.”

Corporate media is as out of touch with popular sentiment as are politicians. Try to make the connection.

Then, let us fantasise that one day we might enjoy a genuinely free press in which debate is actually encouraged rather than manipulated at best and marginalised at worst.

Unwanted record for Pets in Spain

Animal charity, Pets in Spain achieved a new statistical record when they rescued 15 dogs in one day, with 14 of them arriving from an illegal puppy farm.

The dogs rescued were not puppies, they were the discarded mothers and fathers, forced over the years to reproduce many litters.

Most of them were kept permanently in cages, some have old untreated injuries, including broken bones, one is blind, another has just one eye, and others are in ill health and diseased needing long term veterinary treatment.

A Pets In Spain fund raising event has been organized at AJ's bar on El Raso urbanization, located just off the Lemon Tree road near Guardamar, today, Friday June 30, from 12.00pm to 3.00pm.

Visitors will discover various stalls, a raffle, tombola, angel readings, handmade greetings cards and live music provided by guitar vocalist Tim Taylor.

Pooling my thoughts by

It’s that time of year when we swap our morning walks for an hour of strenuous activity in the pool, although not until the water temperature reaches 25C. I’m a bit of a wuss like that.

These are our preferred means of daily exercise which we find much more enjoyable than regular visits to the gym. Our local gymnasium is a relatively short walk away, but it became something of a chore.

The crunch came after the proprietor refused our request to suspend the Princess’s membership until she had recovered from extensive foot surgery. His reaction was, “Why? She still has the use of her upper body”.

Up yours Tonto, I more or less told him, and we haven’t been back since.

The first morning at the pool saw me execute my customary leap into the deep end. But a strange thing happened.

Like those clips in movies where a character is moving at lightning speed, but the special effects lads have slowed other people and traffic down to a crawl.

Well that was me in reverse.

I had reached optimum height and with my arms clasped tightly around my knees, was poised in mid-air, when I had an alarming thought. Had I removed my hearing-aids?

Yes I know it’s surprising to learn that one so young needs these devices, but there you are.

Too many rock concerts in the seventies.

Hearing aid technology and water do not mix and instead of my past life flashing before me, all I was hearing was “nineteen hundred euros; nineteen hundred euros” repeating itself.

Then, still hovering, I questioned whether or not I had taken the requisite poolside shower just seconds before, but it was like those occasions when you lock the front door after leaving home. The wife asks in the car, “Did you lock up?” You know that you did, but feel compelled to go back and make sure.

I knew that I had showered. Hadn’t I? Because if not and our pool superintendant had spotted it, then I was toast.

Our superintendant makes Genghis Khan look like Sooty and is the main reason why our community pool is one of the best in the area, and not showering prior to swimming is a castratable offence.

But happy to relate, the aforementioned aids were at home, and it was confirmed by the Princess that we had indeed showered together.

Now how could I have forgotten somet h i n g l i k e that?

Two elm trees fell on Tuesday on carril Carceles in Beniajan.

They were healthy but the inclination of the hill on which they were situated, together with their weight caused them to topple.

One fell straight and the other fell at an angle and had to be felled.

Traffic was stopped whilst the elms were removed from the road.

The incident caused damage to public lighting and telephone lines that pass through the area, as well as a metal fence that protects the perimeter of a firewood company across the street.

In my last article I mentioned that I would be staying up most of the night to see the results of the General Election coming in. However, at 23.00 our time, much to the shock of many people (once again) a hung parliament was forecasted, which would have been the worst news Theresa May could have wished for. That is exactly what happened.

Since then, the most appalling fire in London with so much anger surrounding it, has happened.

Which is not surprising, as it would appear that playing conkers is unsafe, whilst good fire prevention on tower blocks was off the radar. This was shortly followed by an attack on the Muslims coming out of their mosque. Yet again, a white van trying to kill as many people as possible. It was a white extremist, a normal family man from Cardiff, seeking revenge. I am very fearful for the UK as there are thousands of potentially dangerous Jihads and extremists and no matter how many police and how much security is in place, it is impossible to monitor them all. Then of course, we have got the Brexit talks started. Not really the climate for a government, which is seriously weakened, to start negotiations on the UK’s future. I just cannot understand why over 50% of the UK believe they are going to be better off, more independent and great again. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, the British were in pretty good place already. One great concern for me is that the City of London creates great wealth, paying an

enormous amount of taxes – both business and personal and this is also now threatened. Whilst coming out of the European market where nearly 50% of their exporting was to the EU –now what?

I, like many living in Spain, are looking forward to the Ex-Pat situation being settled in both countries and when hopefully we will be able to sigh with relief and get on with our lives. Many of us think there is a great possibility that a greater proportion of people will want to leave the UK and come and live in Spain.

To avoid the consequences of Brexit, the increasing terrorist threat and to get away from the very frightening press, who seem to take no responsibility for anything that they say nowadays.

All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case.

Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.

2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling.

A ‘big well done’ Liz Page wrote to RTN to say a ‘big well done’ to Nigel Hopkins and Melody Makers International Choir after enjoying ‘a very special evening of entertainment’ at their most recent concert: ‘What a splendid evening Nigel Hopkins and Melody Makers International Choir provided on Saturday June 24 at the Orihuela Costa Hotel. I really felt that this wonderful choir could not have bettered the Andrew Lloyd Webber concert performed in January this year, but this concert certainly equalled and in my opinion bettered the January concert.

The Melody Makers Choir, under their conductor Nigel Hopkins gave some excellent performances of all time great musicals. The audience were treated to medleys from My Fair Lady, Oliver, West Side Story and Singing in the Rain, then ended with the fabulous Les Miserables.

The choir goes from strength to strength and the arrangements penned by Nigel Hopkins displayed the power of the collective choir, plus providing the ladies of the choir the opportunity to demonstrate their virtuosity with I Feel Pretty, One Hand, One Heart and America and the tenors and basses showed the power of their voices with excellent renditions of Somethings Coming and Somewhere.

There were some great soloists with Verity Hall singing Think of Me, Graham Cooke singing Old Man River and Rebecca Holt providing skin tingling performances of Losing My Mind from the Follies and especially the mind blowing performance of The Movie in my Mind from Miss Saigon.

Special mention must also go to Bill Nicholson, Erik Berg, Jane Atkinson, Alyson Horsfall and Philip Mitchell for their excellent singing.

Nigel Hopkins was on top form, providing little antidotes about the various musicals or the composers and generally leading the choir to achieve excellence.

The Sound of the Musicals was an excellent concert, with a great variety of top notch music from some of the best musicals of all time. Well done to everyone concerned, you all provided a very special evening of entertainment.’

Bumper 70 million Euro Hogueras for Alicante This year’s Hogueras festival in Alicante, which ended last Saturday, was the best ever, according to Alicante city hall.

Measured, both in terms of visitor numbers and economic impact on the city, the traditional fiesta, which heralds the beginning of the summer solstice brought in record figures.

Good weather conditions and a weekend finale combined to bring visitors flocking to the city last weekend,

when virtually every hotel was full and the occupancy rate touched almost 100% The figures, released by Alicante Tourism councillor, Eva Montesinos, reveal that almost 200,000 visitors from the UK descended on the city for the fiesta.

Total number of visitors almost hit one million, translating into an income of more than 70 million euros spent during the week.

“The increase in national tourism, together with the UK

visitors forming 20% of the total number of visitors.”Said the councillor, pointing out that Tourist offices saw an average of 3400 visitors per day.

The culmination of the fiesta, when the bonfires are lit is the busiest night of the year in Alicante, and this summer, visitor numbers topped 300,000 for the ‘crema’ celebrations last Saturday.

In addition, the TRAM d’Alacant had a total of 400,000 journeys, almost 5% up on last year’s figures.

Italian pesto chicken burgers These delicious burgers are a treat for the whole family.

Serves 4 Preperation time: 15 mins plus chilling Cooking time: 10-13 mins 500g (1lb) minced chicken 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 spring onions, finely chopped 2 teaspoon pesto 1 egg yolk Put the chicken, garlic, spring onions, pesto and egg yolk in a bowl, add seasoning and mix together well. Divide into 4 then shape into thick burgers. Chill for 1 hour.

Head the oil in a nonstick frying pan, add the burgers and fry for about 10-13 mins, turning once or twice until they are golden brown and cooked though.

Split the rolls in half and lightly toast the cut sides. Spread with mayonnaise then

1 tablespoon sunflower oil 4 ciabatta rolls (or your choice of rolls) 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 40g (1.5 oz) watercress and spinach salad 50g (2oz) sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained and sliced Salt and pepper add the salad and tomatoes to the lower half of each roll. Top the burgers with the other half of each roll and serve with oven chips or salad.

If you fancy curried chicken burgers mix 2 teaspoons hot curry paste and 2 tablespoons chopped coriander into the chicken mixture instead of the pesto. Fry as above and serve in warmed naan bread with salad and mango chutney.

Chocolate-chip gingerbread cookies Makes 8 cookies 225g self raising flour 125g margarine 40g light brown sugar 40g soft dark brown sugar 150g chocolate chips 1 teaspoon salt

3-4 teaspoons ginger 1/2 teaspoon corriander 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (Alternative: use 1 1/2 teaspoons of mixed spice) 3 tablespoons milk

Sieve flour, sugar, salt and spices together. Add margarine and cut into the dry ingredients with a knife. Rub through fingertips until it has a breadcrumb consistency.

Add the chocolate chips and then gradually add the milk whilst mixing until it forms a dough. Roll out the dough to about 1cm thickness and then cut with pastry cutter. Place in a preheated oven (Gas Mark 4 / 180 °C) for 15/20 minutes until golden brown.

When stress becomes depression Most men suffer from stress at some time in their lives, whether it be work, relationship, life event, health or financially related. We can often remain unaware that stress is affecting us as different people react to life challenges in different ways and what one person may perceive as stressful, another may not.

People also experience differing symptoms when they are stressed but the most common include the following, physical symptoms: Headaches, nausea, stomach ache, change in bowel habits, loss of appetite or overeating, tiredness, insomnia, chest pains, palpitations, erectile dysfunction and hyperventilation Psychological symptoms: Irritability or impatience, tearfulness, feeling overwhelmed, unable to switch off, feeling worried, poor concentration, being disinterested in other aspects of life and loss of sense of humour.

Behavioural symptoms: Biting fingernails, picking at skin, smoking more cigarettes, drinking more alcohol, making a point of avoiding situations that trigger the stress and withdrawal from social engagements and hobbies. Taking steps to breakdown a big problem into smaller parts that are easier to address, is a good place to start when trying to discover what triggers our stress.

In addition, we should try to set realistic goals and recognise that sometimes there will be things that we cannot change.

We should also ensure look after our physical health by sleeping and eating well, whilst cutting down on excess smoking and drinking alcohol wherever possible.

Finding time for physical exercise, by organising out time will help to release feel good pheronomes in our bodies and more importantly we should not forget to factor in breaks and periods of down time.

If the original trigger that caused the stress settles down or disappears but behaviour, feelings and physical symptoms persist it may be a sign that our stress is turning into depression or anxiety. Feeling sad, a loss of appetite, sleeping poorly, and concentration difficulties for more than two weeks, especially if the stressful trigger has passed, may be a clue that we are becoming depressed.

However, experiencing symptoms of feeling afraid, panic attacks, irritability or restlessness for more than two weeks this may point to anxiety.

Most crucially, taking little enjoyment in life, starting to feel worthless, having thoughts of self-harm or considering that life is not worth living are signs that we should seek urgent help.

Heat-busting beverages that can benefit our health

As the heat increases, so does the amount of liquid we consume and we don’t just drink water to quench our thirst.

There are a variety of beverages to which we turn to hydrate and enjoy throughout the day in our leisure time with family and friends, but many of us are unaware as to how the most popular summer drinks can contribute and benefit our health.

Beer, one of the most widely consumed beverages in Spain, lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and polyphenols, protects against neurodegenerative diseases and improves bone health because it contains silicon. It also has an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic effect thanks to hops, one of its essential components. It is highly recommended for athletes - Carolina Perez, Nutritionist at Quironsalud Hospital Torrevieja: ‘Consumption of a moderate amount of beer after intense activity regains rapid rehydration and helps prevent muscle aches. Beer for its taste, aroma and being carbonated, more so served cold, is accepted better than water in situations where thirst is not present.’

Slush is one of the most popular summer drinks, not to be confused with sorbet. The main component of slush is water, representing about 85-90 per cent of its composition meaning its calorie content is not very high, at around 60-70 calories per 100 millilitres. In its preparation, no fats are used (unlike ice creams), so slush boasts no added fat or cholesterol. However, the consumption of slush should not be abused because, although it has no fat, it has significant amounts of sugar.

‘The absence of fat and cholesterol in the composition of slush can be a positive for people with high blood cholesterol levels who want to indulge occasionally. However, it is important that consumption occurs sporadically to avoid excess sugar in the diet’ advises Dr. Honorio Martinez, a Specialist in Sports Medicine at Quironsalud Hospital Zaragoza.

Another irresistible drink is horchata, consumed in two versions, liquid and slush with the basic

ingredients being water, tiger nuts and sugar.

Horchata is a rich sugary energy drink with healthy fats ‘highly recommended for all ages but especially for patients with cardiovascular disease who do not suffer from being overweight’, says Dr. Carina Gimeno, nutritionist at the Obesity Unit at Quironsalud Hospital Valencia.

‘It also has a significant calcium content, much needed during periods of breastfeeding, pregnancy and growth in children’, she adds.

Horchata is low in sodium and high in potassium which makes it perfect for high blood pressure patients. It aids in the recovery of diarrheal diseases due to its astringent properties and having no cholesterol, gluten or lactose, is suitable for those with intolerances.

‘However, horchata is not advisable for diabetic patients because of its high sugar content’, advises Dr. Gimeno.

Car trade growth at record levels UK Automotive’s 18th annual Sustainability Report reveals the manufacturing sector turned over a record £77.5 billion in 2016, marking a seventh consecutive year of growth, while productivity, production output and vehicle sales also increased.

UK car and commercial vehicle production and new vehicle registration volumes grew to record levels in 2016, up 8.9% and 0.2% respectively. Meanwhile, employment in manufacturing remained stable at 169,000 jobs, resulting in productivity reaching a record high of 11.8 vehicles produced for each person employed in the industry. The average manufacturing worker generated more than £130,000 for the British economy, up 9.8% on 2015.

The number of livelihoods dependent on the sector as a whole stood at 814,000 across manufacturing, retail, distribution and repair services.

The record turnover by UK motor manufacturing represents a 9.0% increase on 2015, with the additional value added to the UK economy rising 7.3% to £21.5 billion. The industry also upped its investment in innovation; with R&D spend reaching £2.75 billion last year, up from £2.5 billion in 2015.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said: “Today’s results demonstrate how UK Automotive is delivering growth across the UK, boosting productivity and improving environmental performance. This has been driven by massive investment, in new models, plants, innovation and one of the world’s most skilled workforces. However, for UK auto manufacturing to continue to thrive, we need clarity on the future, post Brexit,

to encourage ongoing investment and growth.”

Key to the UK automotive sector’s continued success is its highly skilled workforce. In addition to increasing productivity, industry has improved the working environment of its employees, demonstrated by the high retention rate, with staff turnover falling to just 5% in 2016 compared with the national average of 16.5%. At the same time, investment in skills increased, with the number of days’ training per employee up 9.1%. In addition, Sustainability Report signatories reported an intake of 870 new apprentices last year, on top of the 800 apprentices that were retained.

The sector’s improved social and economic performance was achieved while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes. In 2016, CO2 emissions per vehicle produced fell by -2.9%, energy use per vehicle fell by -3.2% and water use by -3.5%. Waste to landfill was cut by more than a third (-33.7%) to a new record low of 0.9% of all waste produced, with almost 90% recycled, while manufacturers continued to invest in onsite renewable energy production, in 2016 producing 57.7GHh of energy – enough

to power 14,420 homes.

Industry has continued to invest heavily in developing the latest low-emission technology to address the air quality challenge. Alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) registrations increased in 2016, up 22.2% to account for 3.3% of the market, making the UK the biggest market for plug-in electric cars in Europe. At the same time, average new car CO2 emissions fell for a 19th year to just 120.1g/km – 33.6% below levels in 2000.

Lopez wins Queens title at last Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who had a match point against GrigorDimitrov in 2014, finally got his hands on the Aegon Trophy at Queens Club last Sunday.

The world number 32, saved a match point on the way to his 4-6, 7-6 (7-2),7-6 (10-8) win over Marin Cilic.

Rafa Nadal is not the only Spanish tennis player in a rich vein of form at the moment, as Lopez, 35, who lost in the final at Stuttgart earlier in the month,has a 9-1 match winning ratio on grass this summer.

Lopez will be one to watch at Wimbledon this year, as will Queens runner up Cilic, who didn’t drop a set in the tournament, but still failed to win.

“I cannot believe that I have finally won this trophy,” world number 32 Lopez told BBC Sport.

“I have been waiting for so long, 15 or 16 years, to be here holding this trophy.”

Both men had dropped serve only once on their way through the draw and the final was, predictably, a match of fleeting opportunities that came down to a deciding tie-break.

Lopez saw two match points slip by before taking his third after two hour and 31 minutes.

The grass-court specialist had said before the match how much the tournament means to him, and flew his parents in from Spain on Sunday morning to watch the final.

Feliciano Lopez finally got his hands on the Aegon Trophy at Queens Club last Sunday

set he could not capitalise on an early chance in the second.

Lopez kept pace with Cilic as serve dominated, and got the better of two contrasting tie-breaks.

He raced into a 6-1 lead in the first, levelling at one set all when Cilic found the tramlines, and then held his nerve in a dramatic decider.

Lopez lunged to his left and volleyed into the open court to save the first match point of the tie-break, and then saw Cilic save one with his 22nd ace, and a second - on Lopez’s serve - with a volley.

It was Cilic who finally cracked, hooking a forehand wide and prompting an

emotional Lopez to head into the crowd to celebrate with his team and family.

“I thought at the end of the tie-break, after missing match points, that I was not going to be able to make it,” said Lopez.

“It is tough to put the match where I lost to Dimitrov out of my mind. I was serving for the match again and it was difficult to handle my nerves but I managed it.

There were very few unforced errors in the incredibly high-quality match with dreams coming true for Feliciano Lopez who is playing his best tennis at 35.

He won’t want to wake up ………… until after Wimbledon!

San Javier Golf Society news San Javier Golf Society recently visited the La Serena Golf, Los Alcázares, for their Individual Stableford Qualifier competition. Another big turnout, including several new members, enjoyed a great day of golf on their home course, which was in excellent condition as usual.

Division 1 winner was Mick Hardy with 38 points, followed by Bob Gallard 37, Paul Matthews 36 and Steve Higgins 36.

Division 2 was won by Bob Eaton with 38 points, followed by Shaun Devine 33, John Hillier 31 and Jo Murphy 30. Nearest the pins were won by Steve Branston, David Archer, Bob Gallard, Peter Swallow and Giovanni Butto.

The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was won by Bob Eaton and the dreaded ‘Monkey’ was won by Mark Pollitt. After the next qualifier at Lo Romero on 3rd July, the society has a team ‘Dusty Bin’ competition at La Serena on Wednesday July 19, with a tee off time of 9.10am.

La Marina @ Lo Romero A slightly depleted field of players owing to illness of wives and pets, took to the incomparable Lo Romero course for the La Marina Golf Society’s President’s trophy recently in scorching temperatures.

On any other occasion, the two runners up, Pete Wootton with 39 points and Geoff Ettridge with 37 points might have been winners.

However, for the second year running, Sarah McCabe produced a handicap-busting round, accumulating 43 points to re-take the trophy with a brilliant round in difficult conditions.

Winners of nearest the pins were Norman Pickett and two to Graeme Buchanan. Prize-giving was delayed until the excellent dinner dance at the La Marina sports centre where a very tasty 3-course meal was served by Helena and her staff.

The evening was a huge success, so big thanks to everyone who made it.

Music was provided by the classy Diverse Duo, who were so popular that some people fell over each other to reach the dance floor.
