Jalon Valley Help celebrate 25th anniversary Salones Canor in Teulada played host to a very special party last Friday as 260 people turned up to celebrate Jalon Valley Help’s 25th anniversary. Read the full story on page 10.

A social media campaign organised earlier this week by the husband and family of Kirsty Maxwell has proved highly successful.

The twitter and facebook appeal is for people to come forward with information on the final hours before her unexplained death.

The newly wed Scot fell to her death from a tenth floor balcony at the Payma Apartments in Benidorm last April.

The appeal has been further updated this week to include references to the ‘My Pretty Payma Apartments’, which are the refurbished properties on the same development as the ones where Kirsty died.

With more than 5400 likes already and over a thousand shares on facebook, the campaign is picking up pace rapidly.

A google+ Blog page has also been set up within the last two days to further saturate coverage in the hope of jogging people’s memories.

The grieving family are convinced someone holds vital evidence that could help Spanish police and investigating lawyer Luis Miguel Zumaquero, piece together the events leading up to the tragedy in the early hours of Saturday April 29.

The heartfelt message from husband Adam, 27, said “Words cannot describe how Kirsty’s husband Adam, her mum Denise, dad Brian, brother Ryan and the rest of her family and friends are feeling.

“Their grief is aggravated by the fact there are so many unanswered questions about what happened to Kirsty and the knowledge that people out there hold vital information which can assist the family’s search for the truth.”

MontgoRock donate €4,500 to local Javea causes MontgoRock fulfilled its corporate social commitment last week, donating €4,500 to local Javea associations and initiatives.

by Tahnee Wright Representatives Mari Cruz Gisbert and Josan Serrano presented a €2,500 cheque to the Association of People with Autism and the CyL classroom at the El Arenal de Xabia public school.

These funds were collected through the MontgoRock website after it ran an educational campaign on autism.

At the Ayuntamiento, they then presented Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi with a €2,000 cheque towards the conversion of the Cap de Sant Antoni lighthouse into a centre to educate visitors about the marine reserves of the Marina Alta.

These funds were collected from the sale of reusable plastic cups at the festival.

The festival demonstrates its commitment to the environment and collaborates with the ‘Javea brand’ as a sustainable destination.

Moraira makes space The Les Sorts car park in Moraira underwent improvement works recently as the municipality prepares for the high summer season.

Councillor Raul Llobell said the municipality is ‘doing everything possible to offer additional parking spaces and improve the layout of the car park.’

15 years in prison for man who broke restraining order and killed ex-wife Francisco Jose Navarro, the man who broke his restraining order and killed his ex-wife as she slept in her Denia home has been sentenced to 15 years and nine months in prison by the Court of Alicante.

Found guilty of murder, he was also ordered to pay €150,000 compensation to the victim’s daughter and €45,000 to the victim’s mother.

The court heard how the murderer went to the victim’s home in the early hours of May 15 last year and stabbed her in the neck with a 14-centimetre knife as she slept.

The victim had no chance of survival and died shortly afterwards having suffered a haemorrhage.

The murderer had previously appeared in court in December 2014 on charges of domestic violence toward the victim. He was sentenced to 50 days community service and handed a 16-month restraining order preventing him from approaching her.

by Tahnee Wright Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud was recently awarded the Certificacion Nacional de la Unidad de Insuficiencia Cardiaca (National Certification of the Unit of Heart Failure) by the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC) within its SEC-Excellence programme.

The SEC-Excellence programme aims to improve the quality of care and assistance to patients with cardiovascular diseases, the ultimate goal being to improve their prognosis and quality of life.

Only 15 hospitals throughout Spain boast this distinction – from Hospital Gregorio Maranon in Madrid to Hospital del Mar in Barcelona.

Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud is the only hospital in the Valencian Community to be awarded the certification.

Teulada-Moraira young people meet with Comunidad Valenciana councillors

The children and adolescent council of Teulada-Moraira - founded in May as part of the municipal project to ensure the opinion of young people is heard - participated in a forum in Piles, Valencia last weekend where councillors from the Communidad Valenciana met to exchange ideas on the new children and adolescents law.

Members of the council presented the ideas they have been working on and made suggestions accordingly.

This month, the council will also present its ideas and results from workshops held since its inauguration to the councillors of Teulada-Moraira.

Councillor Daniel Ibanco said the board are ‘eager to listen to the children and adolescent council’s suggestions.’

U3A Vall del Pop celebrate 10th anniversary

U3A Vall del Pop members faced a few tricky clues which led them on a walking treasure hunt around Benissa last week as the group celebrated their 10th anniversary.

‘Treasure, what treasure?

At about 10.30 in the morning we set off on the U3A Vall del Pop 10th Anniversary Benissa Walking Treasure Hunt. We were some of the last people to pick up our sheet of cryptic questions, photo clues and directions from the start point in Av Constitucio. We clutched a map of Benissa and started our search, trying to follow the instruction – ‘Keep your eyes open.’

We were directed around the town looking to solve clues, the solution to which taught us some interesting things about Benissa. Some of the clues and questions were straightforward but others defied all efforts to solve them, although some people managed - I claim diminished brain power due to advanced age!

We walked for nearly 3 hours, stopping briefly for some refreshments in a little café bar about half way. At 1.30 we reached the end of our search and could sit for a while in a restaurant where we were treated to an excellent buffet lunch, whilst the organisers toiled to mark our papers. Eventually we learned that we had scored 42 out of a possible 51 points - we were not the high scorers but I felt we had done quite well and I was satisfied with the results of our efforts.

We learned that Benissa is a town with a rich history spanning more than 1000 years, but the real lesson for me was that all too often we walk around without seeing the interesting things that surround us. I will in future try to see ‘con otros ojos’.

Thanks to Brigid Redmond and her helpers, for a great excursion, and the Benissa Cultural Centre who did us proud.’

New radios for the Bomberos Voluntarios de Cumbre del Sol Three members of the HELP Denia and Marina Alta committee, President Candy Wright, Vice-President Catherine Perez Pinto and Secretary Sue Lawson visited the Bomberos Voluntarios de Cumbre del Sol, Benitachell recently.

They were welcomed by Alfred (Belgian), Edward (Dutch), Bernd (German), Wolfgang (German) and their Chief, Dieter (German).

Other members not present included four English volunteers. A total of 14 firefighters make up the team.

The firefighters expressed their greatest thanks to HELP for their recent donation of â‚Ź1,750, which enabled them to purchase eight new radios.

Up until now, their Chief reported, they had been managing with only one radio which they used to stay in touch with the base.

The firefighters are now able to keep in touch with one another when called out to emergencies and they are also now linked by radio to the bomberos in Denia.

The committee members left with a memento each of their visit – a baseball hat with the bomberos’ emblem.

Montgo monitoring sorted for the summer Javea City Council hosted a coordination meeting last week to plan forest monitoring and fire prevention on the Montgo throughout the summer period.

The meeting was chaired by Mayor Jose Chulvi and was attended by the councillors of Public Safety and Prevention of both Javea and Denia, police representatives, Denia firefighters, civil protection volunteers from Javea, Denia, Gata and Pedreguer, ACIF Martin Alta, Natural Park staff and volunteer firefighters from Balcon al Mar. The entire protected area has been split into zones and a roster agreed, ensuring an operation is always monitoring the Montgo at any given time.

Another cyclist dies on N-332 road

by Andy Mansell One more cyclist fatality near to Villajoyosa on Monday brings the total deaths to five in just over a month.

Since May 7, five cyclists have died on Valencian roads in three different accidents after collisions with cars. These tragic events have placed the safety of cyclists firmly at the centre of the political agenda involving all parties.

The most recent accident occurred when a 69-yearold cyclist from Villajoyosa died after colliding with a vehicle on a stretch of the N-332.

The man died at the scene from injuries resulting from a front-side collision with a vehicle, whose driver has since tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

This latest fatality, adds to the deaths of three cyclist hit by a drunk a driver on the same N-332 road further North, close to Oliva in May and a further tragedy last Sunday, involving a driver under the influence of drugs on the N-332 near to Ondara.

Another accident in which a man suffered a traumatic fatal brain injury when he was hit by a haulage lorry in Betera earlier this week, brings the total to five.

Demonstrations by cyclists calling for greater protection and legislation, in the Valencia region’s capital have brought a response from the government who have called an emergency meeting with cyclist groups for this coming Friday.

The meeting will also involve opposition parties, who have accused President Ximo Puig of turning deaf ears to the issue of safety.

Cyclist groups are calling for legislation bringing a zero alcohol and drug rule for drivers in Spain, as in many other European countries.

Cat bones unearthed at site in Spain Possible evidence for the medieval trade in cat fur has been uncovered at a site in eastern Spain. Some 900 domestic cat bones were discovered in a pit where crops may have been stored at the farming site of El Bordellet.

The bones’ cut marks and fractures are consistent with what has been found in skinning experiments.

Most of the bones are from cats between the ages of nine and 20 months at the time of death, likely because the animals would have been large, but their coats still relatively undamaged.

Zooarchaeologist Lluis Lloveras of the University of Barcelona said cat fur was widely used during the Middle Ages in northern Europe to make coats, collars, and sleeves.

‘Some texts also make reference to the healing qualities of cat skin, but also to its possible harmfulness,’ he said.

Domestic cat fur was less valuable than the fur of wild cats, he added and was worn by the less wealthy and austere social groups, such as nuns.

Lloveras also notes, however, that a horse skull, a goat horn and a chicken eggshell were found alongside the cat bones. ‘All these particular animal remains have been associated with ritual practices in the Middle Ages as well as in later times,’ he said.

Boy falls into the Cova Tallada taking a selfie A 15-year-old boy fell 10 feet into the Cova Tallada last weekend as he went to take a selfie and misjudged his footing. He fell into the sea onto the rocks and is said to have fractured both of his wrists. An off-duty policeman rushed to rescue the boy who was semi-conscious and in danger of drowning. The man managed to carry the boy to safety and with no mobile-phone service in the Cova Tallada, he asked his sister, who he was out with for the day, to head back to the top of the footpath to find service and alert the emergency services. The off-duty policeman and several friends sheltered the shivering boy with t-shirts and towels before the Red Cross arrived in a rescue boat and took him to Moll de la Pansa, where he was met by an ambulance.

Spanish Prime Minister fights his corner

by Tahnee Wright Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy defended his government and its success in getting Spain's economy out of crisis during a marathon noconfidence debate called against him after countless corruption scandals involving his ruling Popular Party.

After over 12 hours of debate, a confidence vote was scheduled for Wednesday but was not expected to get the required backing of an absolute majority of deputies needed to oust Conservative Rajoy.

Rajoy battled chiefly with Pablo Iglesias, leader of the far-left Podemos party, who presented the motion and his candidacy as an alternative leader.

But Podemos only has 67 deputies in the 350-seat parliament and not many supporters.

Iglesias said Rajoy would ‘be remembered as the president of corruption.’

Podemos' No. 2, Irene Montero, listed the dozens of corruption cases engulfing Rajoy's party and demanded that it ‘give the stolen money back, every cent of it and ask for forgiveness.’

Rajoy has been dragged into one of the most damaging of the cases, an alleged kickbacks-for-contracts scheme to finance party activities. He testifies as a witness in the case July 26.

He argued there were cases of corruption in all parties but said it was not ‘the norm’ and no case involved any member of his government.

He accused of Podemos of being a radical group bent on upsetting Spain's stability.

Rajoy, who has made economic growth and job creation his chief goals since first taking office in 2011, boasted that Spain in 2017 was growing at double the rate of its neighbours and creating a halfmillion jobs yearly. He said Iglesias' radicalness made him unfit to be prime minister and ‘would lead Spain back into crisis.’

The leading opposition Socialist party, with 84 deputies, rejects Rajoy but is likely to abstain rather than support Iglesias, whom it deems to be an anti-establishment populist.

Rajoy heads a minority government since elections last year.

His party, with 134 seats, should have the support of the centrist Ciudadanos party's 32 deputies and several smaller groups.

Tuesday's debate came as Spain's central bank revised upward its 2017 growth forecast from 2.8 percent to 3.1 percent.

The appeal asks for help from anyone staying in or around the apartments in Avenida de Almeria, 5, in the popular Rincon de Loix area on April 27 to 30 to search their memories, "Did you take any photos or videos that night?

"Do you remember Kirsty and her friends who were all wearing pink shirts?

"Do you know anything about groups of men who were staying at the Payma or My pretty Payma Apartments, Benidorm?

The family, who believe video footage may have recorded during the incident, have been critical of the police, who failed to check mobile phones belonging to the five men who were staying in the apartment from where she fell.

Although they returned to the UK immediately after the tragedy, the men remain under investigation pending a possible return to Spain to face further questioning.

Boutique Carol boosts foodbank funds

by Tahnee Wright Boutique Carol in Calpe has long been a supporter of Calpe & Benissa Lions Club and most recently hosted a Charity Fashion Show at the boutique on Calle Doctor Fleming – successfully raising €210.00.

Guests enjoyed Buck’s Fizz in the sunshine while models paraded the latest summer styles from designers such as Joseph Robkoff, Frank Lyman and Pause Cafe.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organisation, with 1.35 million members in more than 45,000 clubs in more than 206 countries and geographic areas.

The Calpe & Benissa Lions Club was founded in 2007 and from the beginning, has developed fundraising projects and service activities in the Calpe and Benissa areas.

The many fundraising events have included: • Concerts • Fashion Shows • Choir performances • Tea Parties at the Iris Gardens at Marnes

Jalon Valley Help celebrate 25th anniversary

by Tahnee Wright Salones Canor in Teulada played host to a very special party last Friday as 260 people turned up to celebrate Jalon Valley Help’s 25th anniversary.

Jalon Valley Help is a voluntary organisation founded in 1992, when a small group of friends decided to raise money to help the needy in the local area and opened a small shop in Parcent.

Over the years and little by little, Jalon Valley Help grew, raising money wherever it could in order to donate to local worthwhile causes, before developing much needed services of its own.

The organisation´s aim has always been to improve life within the valleys - to provide advice, assistance and support to those in need in far flung villages within the Comunidad de Valencia.

Jalon Valley Help raises funds through its charity shops in Jalon and Alcalali, by donations and through regular events, such as its May Fayre, Auctions and its Christmas Bazaar.

The organisation works in conjunction with other charities, organisations and HELPs in the Marina Alta to provide assistance wherever needed.

Elaine Horton, President of Jalon Valley Help, in her address to those present, praised the organisation’s volunteers: ‘Whatever is asked of them, they always step up to the mark and punch well above their weight with smiling faces.’

‘They are simply the best and I am proud of each and every one of them.’

Elaine also said that the work Jalon Valley Help do could not be carried out without the support of the community.

Guest of honour Sarah-Jane Morris, the British Consul, travelled from Madrid to share the evening and expressed her own appreciation of the work carried out by the organisation.

Also in attendance were Alcaldes and representatives from five Ayuntamientos, representatives from Fontilles, Cancer Care, AECC, Adima, Careline Theatre, Help of Denia, the Masonic Homes of Valencia, CaixaBank and many other businesses,

all of whom regularly provide Jalon Valley Help with support.

The only aspect of the event not to have been meticulously planned came when, much to the surprise of Elaine, Maggie McKenzie together with volunteers from Cancer Care presented a €20,000 cheque to the organisation to be used to assist with the running costs for the Respite and Palliative Care room at Fontilles.

Elaine ‘for once’, was speechless and the audience rose to applaud this generous donation.

Also presented was another generous donation of £2,000 by Sandy Hubble, whose daughters ran the Great South Run in memory of their late father Peter Hubble from Benissa.

Supporting the event were Blevins Franks, who offered financial support and in addition, purchased a wheelchair which was placed in the foyer for all to see. Bodegas Xalo, who generously donated all the wine for the meal, S & R Prints for providing all the printing necessary and the Costa Blanca Floral Club who helped with the floral arrangements.

A fabulous celebration cake was baked by Committee Secretary, Jennifer Beattie and decorated by Mary Wood and members of her Sugar Craft Group.

Entertainment was directed by Master of Ceremonies Ian Bennett and began in the grounds with music from the Vall de Pop Casual Choir, followed by Dolce Divas. As guests sat down to dinner, John Anthony played classical guitar and was then joined by Suzanna Mace dancing flamenco.

Bowling afternoon raises brilliant €370

Local Freemasons from Caledonia Lodge recently hosted a bowling afternoon at ‘The Club’, Calle Toledo, Ciudad Quesada.

48 brethren and guests arrived for a 2.00pm start and were organised into 12 teams of four by the Charity Steward.

Each of the six lanes on the green were occupied by two teams.

With many participants having never played bowls before, those who had played plus two members of the Club first held a short ‘how-to’ session before the afternoon of games began. With winning teams moving to the right, all teams played each other throughout the course of the afternoon.

The soft shoes and woods (bowls to the uninitiated) were provided by the Club, although some participants brought their own.

Games finished at 4.00pm, when cream teas and sandwiches were enjoyed by all.

A grand charity raffle was held - which offered some great prizes and raised an outstanding €350. A further donation was added to the fund, bringing the total raised to €370.

At the end of the day, the Charity Steward declared all participants were deemed winners and each lady was presented with a bottle of Cava.

U3A Denia raise €1,350 for local children’s home

by Tahnee Wright 116 U3A Denia members and friends lined up along the Denia marina promenade last Sunday evening as they waited to board the Catamaran Sunset Cruise in aid of the Centro de Acogida de Menores in Las Rotas.

Once everyone was on board, the vessel set sail, detouring slighting from its usual route towards Javea to avoid the whales that were sighted in the bay some two days prior.

Rob Sweeney sang smooth renditions of hits from the Bee Gees and Michael Buble (much to the ladies’ delight) amongst various jazz and swing classics and had many members up on the deck-cum-dancefloor in no time at all.

A grand charity raffle was held, which brought the total raised to an outstanding €1,350.

Centro de Acogida de Menores is a residential home for children who have been taken into care for various reasons.

The home is funded by the Valencian government but there is no budget available for repairs or decorating.

U3A Denia adopted the home as their 'good cause' and a volunteer group was formed to repair and decorate the home.

The group held its first meeting in November 2011 and visited the home to meet with manager, Pilar.

Pilar was delighted to show the group around for them to see what areas of the home needed repair work and/ or decorating.

The group then spent the next few months going to the home every weekend, decorating all 15 bedrooms and the communal areas.

To raise funds, the group held several charity auctions at El Cid and Alan, the auctioneer, generously replaced every bed in the home. Many members donated TVs, games, furniture and the like, making for a very pleasant ‘family home’ environment.

Through the generosity of its members, U3A Denia has been able to treat the children of the home to a ‘family day out’ every summer and they have also purchased special Christmas presents for each and every one of them since becoming involved in 2011. The €1,350 raised from the Catamaran Sunset Cruise will cover all costs of this years ‘family day out’ to Aqualandia for the 23 children and 7 carers.

U3A Denia expresses its greatest thanks to everyone who attended the event and of course Mundo Marino for their hospitality, Rob Sweeney, Café Soles who provided the muchenjoyed food and donated to the raffle plus other local businesses who donated to the raffle - Giramondo Restaurant, La

Sella and the Poligono Restaurant, Denia.

U3A Denia is the second most northerly U3A on the Costa Blanca and has been in operation for almost 12 years.

With just over 700 members, the association boasts over thirty specialist groups, with several card playing groups, Petanque, a Quiz Group, Genealogy, a Discussion Group and three Walking Groups.

Operation ‘D Day’ Invasion Benidorm Two major events in World War Two history will be recreated in Benidorm this weekend.

by Andy Mansell MORE than 200 members of the Codex Belix historical group will re-enact the historic Normandy D-Day landings as part of three day festival on the town’s Poniente beach.

A preview to the festival will be held outside Benidorm Town Hall at 5.00pm on Thursday June 15, with the opening of an exhibition on the cultural history of the anniversary of the Normandy Landings.

The actual festival, starting on Friday June 16, will showcase period military vehicles, costumes, memorabilia and 1940’s music in a series of scenarios, concerts and event recreations, centred around the Parque d’Elche area of the town.

At 6.30pm, a parade of military vehicles relating to WW2, will drive through the streets of the town.

On Saturday 17 at 7.00pm, a re-enactment of The D-Day landings, using a 12 metre boat from the era, helicopters, parachutes, plus special effects and over 200 military personnel will take place on Poniente Beach.

Benidorm’s Poniente beach will witness the D Day Normandy landings as a World War Two re-enactment comes to town Later on in the evening at midnight a spectacular, cinematic style , sound and light show, will illuminate the skies above the old town of Benidorm.

This will be followed on Sunday 18 at 1.00pm by Operation Avalanche Salerno, a re-enactment of the allied troops entering into Italy in 1943 again using military vehicles, parachutes and equipment from the era.

Throughout the event, food and

drink stands plus memorabilia stalls and members wearing vintage clothing, will mingle with festival goers.

Equipment and parachute displays will be featured and period swing music will be performed by The Red Velvets, and Dr Bogarde,to help to create the unique wartime atmosphere.

Oliva U3A showcase

The University of the Third Age is an international organisation whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community—those in their third 'age' of life. It is commonly referred to as ‘U3A’.

With in excess of 500 members, the Oliva U3A boasts approximately 35 groups, from Golf to History of Art to Line-dancing.

On Thursday June 22, the Oliva U3A will host a showcase of its offering, with demonstrations from its various groups.

Existing members and potential new members alike are welcomed along.

The showcase will take place at the Centre Polivalent d’Oliva, Calle de Miquel Marti I Pol, Oliva from 11.00am with doors opening at 10.30am.

PMR anniversary gift for HELP Benidorm

Property management company, PMR, based in Alfas del Pi, recently celebrated their tenth anniversary with a party in a wonderful villa property in Albir.

Owner Lisa Turner, recently needed the assistance of local charity Help International Benidorm, for one of her clients.

HELP is run totally by volunteers and aims to provide help to residents and visitors in emergencies and times of need. They assist patients in hospital and pay regular visits to the housebound, helping in emergencies and providing advice when people do not know where to turn.

They have several interpreters to assist people at medical appointments, or handling emergencies requiring the Spanish language.

They also loan medical equipment, including wheelchairs for short term use without charge.

HELP maintains a close relationship with the British Consulate in Alicante and with other charitable organisations.

Volunteer teachers provide free Spanish language lessons for HELP members. (A donation is required). They also organise their own social events and encourage house-bound members to participate, raising funds which are used to assist other charities that serve the Costa Blanca community.

Impressed by the support her client received from the volunteers from HELP, Lisa and her PMR colleagues decided to raise funds for the organisation. At the celebration party, attended by friends and local business people, Lisa presented a cheque for 1750 euros to And- rea Hope Vice President of HELP International Benidorm, raised by the PMR team.

Two of the best airports in the world are in Spain

by Tahnee Wright Spain officially has two of the bestranked airports in the world, whilst the UK has four of the worst-ranked.

The new rankings were released

by AirHelp and have put Barcelona’s El Prat and Madrid’s Adolfo SuarezBajaras airports in the top 10, whilst London’s Gatwick and Stansted alongside Manchester and Edinburgh wallow in the bottom 10.

Barcelona El Prat was ranked

seventh best airport in the world, followed by Madrid Adolfo Suarez-Bajaras in eighth place.

London Gatwick was ranked second worst airport in the world, Manchester third, London Stansted fifth and Edinburgh sixth.

The best airport in the world is Singapore’s Changi, followed by Munich and Hong Kong.

Kuwait’s airport was at the bottom of the list.

The ranking also looked at air-

lines and out of 87 carriers, British Airways placed seventh worldwide, followed by Virgin Atlantic.

Both Ryanair and Monarch featured in the bottom five airlines as they were measured on quality of service, on-time performance and how well the airlines process claims of compensation.

Singapore Airlines took out the title of the best carrier followed

by Bulgaria Air. Eitihad and Qatar also topped the charts.

Life-like baby dolls on display in Spain

by Tahnee Wright The ‘Reborn’ festival in Bilbao took place last weekend. Not to be confused with a musical festival of some sort, the trade fair displayed a selection of baby dolls, known as vinyl babies, that have been made with such precision it is incredibly hard to tell if they are real or not.

The life-like creations by designers from Los Babyclon workshop are made by painting layers of platinum silicone (the same material used by cosmetic surgeons in their operations) over a traditional vinyl doll.

Attendees over the weekend were able to see a set of baby Avatar dolls, a trio of new-borns with strange markings on their heads and even a baby chimpanzee wearing a hat.

There was also a selection of animatronic dolls that can move and make noises, albeit when they have been sufficiently charged.

The dolls come with a hefty price tag with the stars of the show, the Avatar types, costing around €2,500. The animatronic dolls fetch over €3,000 each, although the more basic creations are available for around €1,200.

The show was the first of its kind in the northern Spanish city and continues a craze started in Germany.

Cristina Iglesias, the Director of Los Babyclon, told Vice that they are the only company in the world that specialises in making the babies made from silicon.

She said: 'This business is practically the only of its kind in the world you could say. There are various doll designers but they are made in a more traditional way.’

'At first I thought this was very strange, I didn't understand that baby dolls could be made from silicone. After I saw that the products are saleable I decided to pursue the business but make them in a distinctive and better

way than what already existed in the market.'

Despite looking incredibly realistic Cristina says most who come across the designs do not confuse them with real babies as most of their key clients are collectors or those who wish to create their own with the starter kits they sell.

Cristina added: '’There are two branches in the sale of these dolls: one is the final collector who buys at a factory price and another is the reborn artist, who buy the Babyclon directly from the mould, paint it and prepare it and then they sell it to collectors.'

English and Dutch drivers team up to sue VW over ‘dieselgate’ emissions scandal Around 220,000 car drivers in the Netherlands, England and Wales joined forces on Tuesday in what could become a pan-European lawsuit against German carmaker Volkswagen, seeking compensation over its ‘dieselgate’ emissions scandal.

UK law firm Harcus Sinclair and Dutch Foundation ‘Stichting Volkswagen Car Claim’, a U.S.-style class action on behalf of an estimated 180,000 Dutch VW car owners, have teamed up in a move that has the potential to spark a wave of coordinated litigation across Europe.

VW, Europe's biggest carmaker, has said about 11 million cars worldwide were fitted with software to cheat diesel emissions tests that are designed to limit car fumes blamed for respiratory diseases and global pollution.

The company has already agreed to spend up to $25 billion (€22.31 billion) in the United States to address claims from owners, environmental regulators, states and dealers and has offered to buy back approximately 500,000 vehicles.

But it has not reached a similar deal in Europe and faces billions of euros in claims from customers and investors.

The carmaker has offered European drivers a software update for all affected vehicles, but lawyers say this does not resolve the problem and they are demanding adequate compensation.

The Dutch Foundation, which has been trying to reach a ‘reasonable settlement’ with VW since 2015, told Reuters it was also ‘cooperating’ with partners representing drivers in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and was in talks with others in Spain, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Scandinavia.

The expanding lawsuit is seeking compensation for damage suffered by VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and/ or Porsche car owners, alleging VW and supplier Bosch were responsible for the sale of cars that breached toxic nitrogen oxides emissions rules. ‘To date, the owners of the 8.5 million affected European cars remain in the cold,’ said Harcus Sinclair, which launched its case in January 2016 and has signed up about 41,000 English and Welsh VW drivers.

A London trial is expected in early 2019.

La Nucia food bank chums

by Andy Mansell La Nucia Food Bank recently got a huge boost, when four members of CHUMS (friends of charity), a registered group based in Benidorm and Albir went on a food shopping spree for them.

The charity volunteers, accompanied by Rita and Anna of La Nucia

Social Services went off to Lidl supermarket in La Nucia and came away with six loaded trolleys full with 528 euros worth of food and essentials for the food bank.

Marilyn Rogers of CHUMS said it was due to the generosity of the charity’s members and volunteers that they are able to do work such as this and they are all happy to

be able to put something back into their community.

With the groceries safely loaded into their vehicles, they whisked the goods off to the Food Bank cold store and helped them unload everything.

Calling model rail enthusiasts

A group of local model rail enthusiasts are setting up a new society on the Marina Alta and they would like to hear from fellow modellers in the area.

All nationalities are welcomed.

In establishing the society, the group are also looking for suitable accommodation (100 – 150 m2) at a reasonable price.

Robinson Crusoe comes to Javea Members of Javea U3A discovered the truth behind the fictional adventures of Robinson Crusoe as they packed out the Casa de Cultura in Javea Old Town for the latest History Group presentation.

Mike Rendell, an authority on 18th century history, gave his fourth presentation - Castaways: The Real Stories behind Robinson Crusoe and the Mutiny on the Bounty.

Mike’s presentation began with the adventures of Scottish privateer Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years from 1704 to 1709 cast away on the uninhabited island of Juan Fernandez in the South Pacific, off Peru. Selkirk’s remarkable story of survival was the source of inspiration for writer Daniel Defoe’s famous adventures of Robinson Crusoe.

Mike continued with tales of two other 18th century castaways – Captain William Bligh and Captain Charles Barnard.

Stories of these real-life castaways have spawned numerous books and films including Mutiny on the Bounty, Swiss Family Robinson and the movie Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks.

Mike was given an enthusiastic round of applause and thanks by History Group leader Peter Atkinson.

Defibrillator purchased thanks to generous donation Teniente Javier Solieres with Salome and the new life-saving equipment

Roundabout Charity Shop in Javea recently clubbed together with local pharmacist Salome Martinez, of Farmacia Salome in Javea Port, donating €1,200 to purchase a portable defibrillator for residents, which was presented to the Guardia Civil Cuartel last week.

Roundabout also purchased another defibrillator, available for residents in their shops on Avenida Los Fueros, Javea.

Roundabout works in conjunction with local charities, groups and organisations to provide assistance wherever needed.

Moraira Music Festival – ‘Thank you’ The Moraira Moors and Christians and Limon Sound & Light express their greatest thanks to everyone who attended the Moraira Music Festival on Sunday June 4.

Special thanks are also sent to The Blues Brothers who played on until they were eventually beaten by the weather when the electrics went.

An interview with Steve Day from Oak Land Furniture Michel EuEsden Managing Director went along to Oak Land Furniture to meet and interview Steve Day Managing Director of Oak Land Furniture Spain.

The Euro Weekly News were delighted to be able to get the interview as Steve is not well known to hold them and doesn't like the limelight so it was certainly an exclusive scoop for the coasts number one expat newspaper.

MICHEL: Well Steve, here we are at your San Pedro store and I must say it looks magnificent with such a large choice not only of solid oak furniture but also wonderful sofa's too, firstly I would like to say thank you for allowing us this interview as I understand you don't like publicity and interviews, may I firstly ask as it's intriguing why is that?

STEVE: Ha ha, straight to the point as always Michel, wouldn't expect anymore from you, but that's why I enjoy my team working alongside the EWN Media Group as it does

exactly what it say's it's going to do. You have a fantastic group of newspapers here in Spain.

MICHEL: Thanks for the compliment Steve but you haven't answered my question and this is only my first one!

STEVE: I guess I'm quite a shy person deep down but it's more than that, the business is not about me, it's all about the furniture and my great team of employees, without those both the business wouldn't achieve what it does. I often wish wardrobes could talk as they and other items are the real success of the business! At the end of the day if you haven't got the quality product then there's no longevity to your business, rather like your newspaper hey Michel! If you printed rubbish people wouldn't read your newspa-

per, but as we know you deliver a great read and that's why you have been on the coast for so many years! It's the same for my furniture, we deliver a full USP, 100% solid oak throughout the product, building a product that will last the client a lifetime. It's not about me, it's about the furniture and so I like to sit in the background and allow the furniture to stand out and do the talking, customers can come in store and see the quality of product and it stands out. On the shop floor our ethos is the furniture sings out and the store staff just answer questions and explain procedures, we don't employ sales people in effect as the aim is to build the highest quality and designs that stands out.

MICHEL: Steve, whilst we are not here to talk about my newspapers thank you again for the compliment, but yes we carry that same ethos within our business. Now can we stick to the questions without the swing back to me!

So obviously all this lovely furniture in store, who designs it all and where does it actually come from?

STEVE: Well as you can see the cuts of wood that we use to manufacture the furniture are of the highest quality, the wood itself comes from North America from substantial forests complying with all strict EU timber regulations.

We use the highest grade which is North American white oak grade 1 on all the natural oak finished ranges. These are the cleanest cuts with the least knots if any and the most beautiful grains. With our rustic oak finishes we use grade 2 as we want the slight blemishes and knots to create the rustic look.

Anyway the logs are sent to our factories in both China and Vietnam where 90% of the worlds oak furniture is produced, the factories work to our designs and produce the furniture in mass to ensure the manufacturing process is economical to be able to offer our low retail prices. So for instance we do a production run of double wardrobes and then ship 40 foot sea containers to the warehouse in Swindon of double wardrobes, Swindon warehouse receives on a daily basis around 35-40 containers per day, every day 6 days a week. The designs of our furniture are all exclusive to us and design protected and are all actually designed inhouse by ourselves which I feel we are very good at, but this also saves huge designer fees to which again we pass on the savings to our customers. Designer fees are very large in the industry we are in, so as we all have an eye for design we make some great savings.

MICHEL: So Steve do you go to the Far East yourself to the factories and what's it like there if so?

STEVE: In the early days of the business, the answer is yes, probably spent 50% of the year there, as we had to train factories how we expected our furniture quality to be produced. I lived in Dalian which is north China, where the majority of factories are as well as Qingdao, China whilst huge is strange as different products are manufactured in different regions, although we did get down to Shanghai and Beijing many times.

North China is beautiful and not how you would imagine, lovely coast line, great sea food and clean air! Over the last few years China has changed so much, I remember the first ever trip back in 2001 and as myself and my travel companion went down for breakfast we didn't like the look of the food as it was quite extreme to say the least, so we decided to stick with what looked hard boiled eggs, the waiter brought them over in a basket with a pair of chops sticks, we knocked the top off the egg to discover the chop sticks were for eating the chick!

Thankfully as the years have gone by and the country has become more modern better food is now more available!

I don't go as much now as all the production is all built up and as the business has grown, Quality Control teams are all now in place.

Vietnam we now use too, they have caught up with the supply market and chain and do a fantastic job as well. In fact in furniture making terms they are now more competitive and trips there are enjoyable, but again less frequent now as QC teams on the ground. Lovely places to visit but now I focus my main time here in Spain in the sunshine as we have a lot of work to do as we progress through Spain, Portugal and France.

MICHEL: Yes Steve I saw on your website that delivery options are available to Portugal and France too, was that planned?

STEVE: In truth no, it wasn't in the initial plans but when we launched in Spain some 8 months ago now, lots of inquiries came in via the website requesting it and so we set up the delivery infrastructure to incorporate the ex-pats in those countries as well.

No point turning away valued business!

MICHEL: You haven't hung around there then Steve, so what was the initial plan and why Spain?

STEVE: At my age don't have time to hang around these days Michel! If I was as young as you maybe I would have more time!

MICHEL: For someone who claims to be shy you are a bit of a charmer that's for sure! Now back to the question why Spain?

STEVE: Firstly I have always loved Spain and it was a good excuse to move here, but more importantly we could see the potential, we had customers on a weekly basis inquiring in the UK operation if we delivered to Spain, at the time we didn't and customers were paying a small fortune to ship the furniture over themselves.

So clearly there was a market opportunity and a service to provide. Customers obviously know our product and brands so in realistic terms it made sense.

MICHEL: Many people reading this could be thinking about starting a business here themselves, how did you find it to the UK and how different is it?

STEVE: Patience is required for starters and few deep breaths at times but overall it's rather much the same although trading patterns are very different to the UK, the main reason being that the ex-pat market is very spread out along the coast in the main so we get less people to the showroom and more through the website, as the ex-pat knows our brands and products from the UK and of course see the UK adverts on TV here in Spain we had to build the infrastructure internally to cover all options to enable us to deliver further distances from our Malaga based warehouse.

For instance delivery vans at home go out for a days work but here in Spain they can go out for a weeks work. It took a lot of planning and selecting the correct delivery teams was important too. Yes of course we have the product but we have to back the product up with the service.

MICHEL: Yes I agree, the customer should always receive good service, I've taken a look at the reviews on your website and see that you have a 9.8 five star rating on the independent review website Trust Pilot, that's very very impressive!

STEVE: I'm sorry it's not impressive enough, it should be 10.10 in my book, but we will achieve it. Yes it's a great score because we work so hard to deliver the full customer service at all times, but I always believe there's always room to improve.

Everything is about the customer within our Company.

As we cover so many thousands of miles on delivery routes so our customers can enjoy the benefits of our furniture, we have to strive hard and we do with a great delivery infrastructure as well as fantastic communication channels from the team to the customer.

MICHEL: So Steve simple question what's your biggest frustration?

STEVE: Honestly, foot flow to the store, yes I know that the trading patterns are here different in Spain, but I still can't get my head around it totally, yes I get it's a modern world and people use the internet and website, I get they know our quality product and brand but it still frustrates me, that's probably because I'm used to large store foot flows, the Store Manager Nik probably holds the largest conversion rate ever because everyone who comes to store purchases in the main as they have already done their homework via the web.

I guess I'm just an old fashioned retailer but I will always find it strange that a customer will order say from Mijas on the web when the stores only 15 minutes away.

I guess it doesn't really make any difference to us but we do like to show off our fantastic products and showroom. Just a personal frustration really, just an age thing I guess!

MICHEL: Okay that's your frustrations, but do you have a pet hate?

STEVE: I try not to have them as it's never the end of the world, but there are a few. Advertising Reps calling the store phone number has always been one for 30 odd years now, the phone line is for our customers to inquire about furniture not a free tool for Advertising reps who can't be bothered to call in store and show what they have to offer.

It does really wind me up that one especially as the phone line could be engaged whilst a customer is trying to get through. I can't believe that advertising reps can't see its so annoying and reduces their chances of obtaining business!

I have to say we don't get it too bad here as we have carefully selected our media partners like yourself Michel but it's a pet hate of many years. Calls have dropped in recent years but at the same time spam emails have gone up which are just as bad. I believe if you have something decent to offer go out and demonstrate and sell it.

MICHEL: So with the showroom open in San Pedro, the website clearly fully operational and the delivery structure all in place with deliveries basically going out on a weekly basis across Europe to what appears rapid rate what's next?

STEVE: The first thing is always to both maintain and improve where possible standards and customer service. You have to establish solid foundation to ensure when you do further expand you are ready for it and that it doesn't effect current business and customers.

We have though launched a website in full Spanish for the Spanish nation, we love Spanish people, their way of life and thank them for allowing us to bring our business to their country, same time I hope they will enjoy and take advantage of of our great product ranges and quality furniture. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Word order – part 2

As threatened – sorry mentioned – at the end of last week’s article, there are a couple more points to make about word order, before we move on.

One is the trick of “inversion” that is switching with word order between subject and verb. This often occurs in the second clause, or section, of a sentence. We have the same phenomenon in English, but in much more restricted circumstances. For example, in a written text we might read: Paul said, “Close the door”. If we turn the sentence round, the usual order would be “Close the door” said Paul. It would be less usual to read “Close the door” Paul said. So you can see that the more usual sentence switches, or inverts, the usual order of subject followed by noun.

In Spanish this kind of inversion occurs in a much wider variety of contexts and changes are often to do with which part of the sentence we want to emphasise. Here are just a couple of examples.

El jefe llegó a las siete.

OR A las siete llegó el jefe.

Mis padres siempre iban a la feria OR Siempre iban mis padres a la feria.

Now, also on the subject of word order, here’s a question that is especially for those of you who have experienced the joy of teaching English to the Spanish. Why do you think they always say: “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” in answer to the question: “What do you have for breakfast?” I don’t mean, why do they have coffee and toast for breakfast, I mean, why do they always get the word order wrong? Answer at the end of this article.

Finally, the sort of thing nobody ever thinks to tell you about word order is to do with proper nouns. “Proper” here doesn’t mean that they know how to hold their knife and fork correctly, it means nouns that represent actual names of things. “Jane” is a proper noun, so is “Spain”, and so is “Atlantic”. The point here is that the word order is often the opposite way round from English. We say “the Atlantic Ocean” the Spanish say “el océano Atlántico” we say “the Red Sea” the Spanish say “el mar Rojo”. However, mountains and rivers are the same “Mount Everest” the Spanish say “el monte Everest”. There’s clearly more to this than meets the eye, but I’ll leave the research to you if you’re really interested.

And so finally, why do the Spanish always, and without exception, say “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” instead of “I have coffee and toast for breakfast”? The reason is because they are mentally translating “to have for breakfast” which is the single verb “desayunar”. They’re thinking “desayuno café y tostada” and that’s the order it comes out in English: “I have for breakfast … coffee and toast”. All of which just goes to show how we speak in the order of the words of our language native.

Second-time winner takes home Denia quick painting contest first prize La Concurso de Pintura Rapida Ciudad de Denia (translated to – ‘quick painting contest of Denia’) was held on Calle Marques de Campo last Sunday.

David Escarabajal Alcoyano came first for the second year running, taking home the €700 cash prize. Alberto Marquez claimed second prize (€400 cash) and Miguel Mellado claimed third prize (€200 cash).

Jutta Kuenen was awarded the ‘best local artist’ prize, winning a trip to Formentera for two people and Fernando Segui was awarded the ‘best artist of the region’ prize, taking home a collection of paintings to the value of €100.

As consequence of NATO adding Libya to its regime changing agenda Europe suffers the worst population displacement, civil disquiet and ethnic cleansing since World War II. Europe’s cities are now frontline war zones. Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, says that if you live in a city terrorism comes with the territory.

Since NATO’s reckless overthrow of its elected government Libya has descended into a hell on earth. Before being toppled the tribal-council elected Gaddafi turned Libya into the richest of Africa’s 54 nations. In 2011 he stressed that NATO’S actions would vomit millions of African refugees across the fair face of Europe.

He was right; Italy a short sea distance from anarchic Libya, is now the main refugee door into Europe.

Déjà vu: Morocco may soon endure its own U.S inspired Arab Spring.

Brace! Brace! The placid good life of coastal Spain could soon experience a waterborne invasion from migrants lured by easy-pickings thrown from Brussels banqueting tables.

Morocco is closer to Costa coastlines than are Libya to Italy’s. In parts the sea can be crossed in a jolly boat.

But, the prospects for residents here are far from jolly.

The social and economic fallout from a Moroccan collapse into chaos hardly bears thinking about.

According to Russian media, ‘on-going protests in Morocco, now being compared to the ‘Arab Spring’ in 2011, could hit with renewed vigour this summer.’

Salah al Wadia, who leads the ‘Moroccan Movement of Conscience’, says “the anti-government demonstrations are getting out of control and becoming threatening.”

The onset of the so-called Arab Spring early in 2011 heralded a domino style collapse of many Middle East

and African nations. With its genesis in Tunisia the civil unrest spread like a cancer across Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

U.S General Wesley Clark notoriously conceded: “We are going to take out seven countries in five years; Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran.”

The instigators of these Arab Spring revolutions and subsequent regime changes were U.S backed and NATO executed. The cheerleaders are the government

influenced mainstream media who bullhorn fake news, censor and launder NATO’s dirty washing. Serbia is likely to sue NATO for its 1999 regime-changing airstrikes.

Moroccan Rashid Belzaar, Editor-in-Chief of Morocco’s Voice of the North, says the situation has worsened after the arrest of radical Nasser Zefrafi, anti-corruption leader of the protest movement. If civil unrest in Morocco leads to NATO involvement our entire way of life here in Spain could be threatened.

In the early hours on the morning of the June 9th, the lights in the Conservative Party HQ flickered and dimmed, this coincided with a large crack that appeared in the ceiling of the committee meeting room.

Theresa May brushed dust out of her greying hair and off her shoulders, as she hurriedly left the building.

Had there been an earthquake? After all the background rumblings going on amongst Conservative Ministers it is no wonder the disturbances had loosened the footings in this once great Establishment.

Jeremy Corbyn, known now as the come-back Kid, had managed to delivered several heavy blows against the bobbing and weaving of the once powerful Conservatives heavyweights, after he had almost been written off by his own party.

If only Theresa May had swung her bag more often at her weak kneed ministers, like Maggie Thatcher had done, we would not now be sitting biting our nails as a hung Parliament threatens Britains stance on Brexit. I think I can hear more rumblings from the European Union HQ, as many MEPs are dancing a jig not on the Conservatives grave, but the outcome of Election.

There are several reasons why the PM’s manifesto failed to invigorate her supporters. She had bobbed and weaved this way then that way, one day she would announce a policy, then the following day rescind it, this is not what the voters expected or wanted. Another reason for her failure to capture a larger portion of voters is that she failed to reach out to the younger people of the country, who turned out in larger numbers more than normal, and the views of the anti-Brexiteers.

So what is the face saving answer Mrs May find in her HQ’s ruins? The DUP have agreed to throw in their seats to bolster Theresa May’s slim majority in the Commons. This is not the ending she was hoping for. Not a victory by any means not even a draw, or a knock out, a split decision win.

She was driven to Buckingham Palace to tell the Queen that she is going to form a new Government, bruised and battered from the punch up, she could easily retire and live a more measured life, but no this Lady was not for turning like the previous female Prime Minister. She has decided one more fight, maybe fighting at another weight slimming down her policies to a more palatable diet for her supporters.

Now Jeremy Corbyn has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of his own disruptive Ministers who had talked down Jeremy’s chances in the Election, mainly behind his back and sometimes in public his ministers had derided him, some had betted on him losing heavily, however Jeremy with his Trotsky views and his venom against May’s right of centre Party had catapulted him into the split decision.

So let's analyse the outcome, Theresa May will try to tackle Brexit from a diminished position, will she be strong enough to take on the European Union with the slim majority that she has, no doubt the MEP ministers will remind her time and time again about her weakness in Britain, I wish her luck she will need it.

This was the day May almost fell in June.

Book Review

Truth Hurts by Janet Waters.

She soon left Wales and headed for London, joining her sister Joyce but that didn’t last either so by 1939 she found herself returning to South Wales, joining the Land Army and then the NAAFI in Tripoli where she met the love of her life, Chad Munroe who was known as the biggest flirt on the camp, an American soldier. This period in time proved to be a happy one for Nellie, she was one of the crowd, enjoying the hilarity and banter. She made her singing and performing debut as one of The Mad Macaroons and soon became romantically associated with Chad, dreaming of a future life with him. It didn’t work out though: “What a mess. I thought everything was too good to be true. I should have known better, good things don’t happen to me.”

By 1949 Nellie then returned to Berkshire, met Gerald and they married. He was second best to Chad. Chad held her heart.

Now in 2006, Nellie knows that time is running out and she must confess a secret, a shocking secret to her daughter that will devastate her. “Everything was going horribly wrong; her world was crashing around her.”

It’s at this point that Alison realises just how much the truth hurts.

Worth a read.

The story spans almost 90 years taking us from 1919, post first world war era with all its hardships and through the second world war to 2006 where we witness Nellie’s birth (real name Ellen) when tragically her mother Jessie died leaving a brood of children to the eldest girl, Rose to bring up in a 3 bedroom terrace house seen as part of the wages for working down the pit. We begin in a mining village in South Wales. The story has a historical backdrop to it and there are touches of autobiography emerging, otherwise it is a romantic story about unrequited love and guilt.

We begin in the present, the year is 2006 and Nellie is 87.

Her health has declined rapidly and her one and only dutiful daughter, Alison is making one of her regular visits to Fir Trees Residential Home, maintaining a patience and tolerance rarely seen. The reason will soon become apparent. Nellie has not being able to express any love for her daughter and as her health fails her she is full of apologies for being a neglectful and careless mother, trying to explain the reasons why to her daughter. “I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve a daughter like you .I’m so unhappy. I know I haven’t been a good mother to you.” She asks Alison to forgive her: “Please don’t think badly of me. I’m an old lady now, time is passing me by. I know I’ve done wrong and it’s important you know everything before I move on to pastures new.” Euphemistically speaking.

Alison has been living with her partner Graham for 16 years.

Alison which compensated for an

unloving mother. Now she was too old to have children so it was no longer an option for her.

Through story-telling devices where Nellie talks through her childhood and adulthood to Alison we glean her colourful past, shrouded in sadness and isolation. There were ten of them living at home. Freddie, one of the boys had died at the age of seven from tuberculosis. Emrys, the father worked at the colliery with two of the older boys. We also know that money was tight and Rose had to leave school in order to bring up the family and look after the home. Her main role was in trying to keep the family together.

Nellie was 4 when there was an explosion at the pit killing her father and brother Edwin as well as many others in the village. It was like the 1895 disaster. Arthur survived but was diagnosed with black lung disease. More insecurity befell Nellie when she was moved to a farm living with her uncle and aunt, helping with the cows and livestock before being pampered with an Aunt Tilly and Aunt Beatrice, two lesbian women. this didn’t last long and she was soon returned to Penbryn farm. An episode of scarlet fever and Nellie was hospitalised for a number of weeks.

How many people out there can remember the funeral of Winston Churchill?

Judging by the number of us in the queue at the health clinic this morning, clutching our plastic jars containing dubious fluids, my guess would be quite a lot.

I recall it was a time of genuine national grief and a cause for reflection that without this man, there would have been a very different future in store for all of us.

who could forget the poignant moment when the cranes at the London docks were dipped in salute as the great man passed slowly by.

He was an unremarkable and at times, deeply unpopular peace time politician, but a colossus in time of war.

He was born for the moment and a man of his time In the Cotswolds recently we put aside a morning to pay our respects to Sir Winston, whose tomb can be found at the peaceful churchyard in the village of Bladon, not far from Blenheim Palace the ancestral home of the Dukes of Marlborough and the Churchill family.

It’s a pretty little church, tucked away in a cul-de-sac some way from the main village road and is the perfect location as a final resting place.

But as I sat absorbing the ambience of that peaceful setting, enveloped in the sunshine and bird song, it prompted me to consider - where are the heroes we need today?

Who within the ranks of the current political rabble, could step forward to unravel the mess that is stifling our once proud country?

We have a leader who at times appears to be completely out of her depth and as recent events illustrated, has a delivery that resembles a third rate actress stumbling over her lines.

And the arrogance and stupidity in

alienating a large block of elderly core voters immediately prior to a general election defies belief.

And what of the alternatives?

A man who in the past has embraced terrorists in the belief that they are simply misunderstood and have good reason to kill and maim innocent civil-

ians. Or another who boasted post election that he had increased the number of MP’s for his party by 50%.

Impressive, but 50% of eight is only four and that is hardly a Guinness Book of Records event.

God help us, because it looks now as if there is no one else who can.

The man behind the smile

by Andy Mansell Looking around the cool, modern offices of Currencies Direct in Moraira, one of the first things to catch your eye is a cabinet topped with ‘Thank You’ cards from satisfied clients.

Not just one or two though, there must be at least a dozen.

These days, when for so many people, social media messaging has replaced the traditional card, for someone to take the trouble to write a personal message of thanks, is a true testament to the recipient.

Mention this to Paul Harrison, Business Development Manager for the Northern Costa Blanca and he smiles proudly explaining that customer service is the main motivation for him and his team.

Currencies Direct has been successfully helping customers avoid bank charges on money transfers in Spain for twenty years now, saving between 3% and 5% on every transaction.

A. Four years. I originally joined as a Business Development Executive, then got promoted to Business Development Manager looking after clients from El Campello to Gandia and soon to be expanded to beyond Valencia.

Q.How long have you lived in Spain?

A. Fifteen years. I am from Preston in the UK. I’d been travelling, got back to England and realized I didn’t want to live in a cold country, made some enquiries and got a job working in property sales in Calpe.

Q. Are you married?

A. Yes, to Yolanda, she is Spanish, from Albacete and we were married in 2009. We’d been together five years by then.

She was working in a café in Calpe, where I used to go for my lunch from work and I plucked up the courage to ask her out.

Q. Any children?

A. Yes, two girls. Elena is five and Sofia is 8 months old.

Q. Any pets?

A. I was about to say no, but remembered we just got the girls a hamster. I’m not sure, but I can look at it playing on it’s wheel and think to myself, at least I can get off mine at the weekend! Haha Q. Why do you love living in Spain?

A. Like everybody else who lives here. The weather, laidback, outdoor lifestyle and of course I have a Spanish family now.

Q. Why do you love your job?

A. It may sound a bit cheesy, but I love giving great customer service and that’s what we do at Currencies Direct. The money we save people can make a big difference to their lives be it with regular living expenses or in one transaction. I visit people in their own homes too, so they don’t’ even have to come to the office.

Q. What is your motivation?

A. Personally, obviously providing for my family, but on a career level I hope I can continue to develop with Currencies Direct. We now have 13 offices throughout Spain, with clients from the UK, Scandinavia and beyond.

It’s the only programme we won’t miss. It goes on for about three hours every night.

A. Has to be a Mojito in a beach bar.

A. Haha, we both love cooking, so Yolanda does all the Spanish dishes like paella and the Mexican and Chinese. But she loves my roast dinners, complete with yorkshire pudding.

Q. Favourite restaurant?

A. Haha, we have young children, so the only restaurant we eat in is at home.

So that’s Paul, a young man, as passionate about his job and clients as he is about his family and life in Spain.

You’re paying how much for your QROPS?? by

Many of you will have read my article last week regarding financial advisors in Spain charging substantially more than the equivalent service in the UK. In just the last few days I have had several people come to my office to see if I can help them reduce the fees they’re paying on their QROPS.

I saw a lady on Tuesday, we’ll call her Sandra (as before, I’ve changed her name to protect her privacy). The first thing Sandra explained was that every few months her advisor would hand her another wad of pages covered in numbers, charts etc., bamboozle her with complex terminology, and she’d leave the appointment none the wiser as to why her QROPS hadn’t grown over the last 4 years.

Well, finally she was sat in front of someone who would break it all down for her. The first thing I noticed was that she was paying over £1000 a year for the QROPS alone – this is more than double she would pay for a UK SIPP (a UK based, FCA regulated pension that would offer all the major benefits of a QROPS and that she could easily move to).

I also questioned the fees on the funds she had been moved into, which were between 1.5%-2% per year – this is 3 to 4 times more than I’d expect a client to pay for a top performing UK fund, yet she was paying this for pretty average performing funds that I’d never even heard off (and that’s after 15 years of studying funds on a daily basis!).

In addition, she was paying another 1.5% per year in combined fees to her advisor and bond provider. When we broke it all down, her annual fees were over 4% of the total amount she had invested, and I calculated that around 3% of this was going to her financial advisor each year, most of which was in hidden fees which would be illegal in the UK. I was astounded by the combined level of fees here, and it’s safe to say, so was Sandra! The investment returns were barely covering her fees, which is why Sandra had seen no growth after 4 years.

My advice to Sandra was that we move her QROPS to a UK SIPP, which offers all the freedoms and flexibility she needs for less than half the price of a

QROPS, and we would then rebalance her portfolio with FCA regulated funds, at a fraction of the cost of the offshore funds she had been recommended. This would bring her annual costs down to less than half of her existing arrangement, which will have a positive effect on the growth of her plan.

The exact overall fees paid will depend on the specific situation so may vary, but Chorus pride ourselves on fair, transparent and above all, value for money fees.

The procedure to purchase a property in Spain

In Spain, all matters relating to purchase and sale contracts (concept, rights and obligations of both purchaser and seller, contract effects, etc.) are regulated by the Civil Law and in particular by the Civil Code.

In the Spanish contractual system, any agreements, clauses and conditions considered to be relevant by the parties can be freely established in the contracts.

However, despite the contractual freedom existing in the Spanish legal system, all agreements, clauses and conditions must obligatory comply with some rules and principles. Thus, the contractual freedom is limited by these rules and principles.

Purchase and sale contracts are governed by articles 1445 to 1537 of Spain’s Civil Code. These articles establish the purchase and sale concept, who are entitled to purchase and sell, the obligations of both purchaser and seller and the causes of contract resolution. Some of these articles must obligatory be enforced while other are not obligatory. In this latter case, the parties can freely establish the agreements and clauses of the contract, according to their wish.

Purchase and sale contracts can be made either in writing or verbally (article 1278 of Spanish Civil Code). However, it is very advisable to make them in writing, particularly if the object of the purchase and sale is a property.

Purchase and sale contracts are fully valid between the contracting parties and their heirs, provided that the following requirements are fulfilled:

1. Consent of the contracting parties.

2. Object of the contract 3. Purpose of the contract, where the actions to be performed by the parties are described. Seller: delivery of the object and its detailed description. Purchaser: payment of the price including detailed amount.

Finally, all contracts entered into by the parties either in writing or verbally can be notarised and become public title deeds through their signing in the presence of a Notary Public. Both purchaser and seller are entitled to have their private purchase and sale contract notarised.

The main difference between a private contract and a public title deed is that the public title deed has direct access to the Registry of Properties and, once registered, the name of the owner will be recorded and his or her right with respect to the property will then be protected not only against the seller but also against any third party who might claim rights upon the property.

Prior to signing any private contract of purchase and sale with a promoter or individual, it is very convenient to appoint a professional (Lawyer) who will be able to check the legal situation of the property and the content of the contract and give legal advice to the purchaser.

Thus, the lawyer will verify if the contract meets all the essential requirements to be valid, that is, if an accurate description of the object of the purchase and

sale is included and will inform the purchaser.

Likewise, he will ensure that the method of payment is adequate and that the penalty clauses imposed on the parties for breach of contract are fair for both parties (for instance, if the penalty for delay in a payment is fair compared to that imposed on the seller for delay in the delivery of the property).

With regard to new-built properties, it is very important to verify the legal situation and if the builder is the owner of the plot of land upon which the property object of the contract is being or is to be built.

In this case, the lawyer must also verify if said builder has obtained the building licence and the extension of such licence. Finally,the most importan is to be taken into account that the builder has to insurance or provide bank guarantees for any monies paid by the purchaser in respect of the property price. Thus, in the event that the building works do not start, are never completed or are not completed by the agreed delivery date, the purchaser will be guaranteed the refund of any sums paid.

Once the lawyer has ensured that the contract complies with all the abovementioned guarantees, it can be signed and the payments made, according to what has been agreed.

Finally, at the same time or after the final payment is made, the purchaser will be entitled to formally complete the purchase by signing the public title deeds before a Notary Public.

CNMV impose month-long short-selling ban on Liberbank The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), Spain’s stock market regulator imposed a month-long short-selling ban on Liberbank on Monday in an effort to halt the sharp fall in the lender’s share price and what European authorities have described as a potential 'domino effect' that could damage the country's entire banking system.

Shares in Liberbank rallied in response, rising 30 per cent in morning trading.

The measure comes less than a week after Santander acquired fellow Spanish lender Banco Popular in an overnight auction for €1 after the European Central Bank warned that Spain's No. 6 bank by assets was on the verge of collapse.

The acquisition resulted in heavy losses for shareholders and some bond investors.

That in turn prompted a steep fall in the share price of Liberbank, a much smaller lender but one that carries a significant amount of non-performing assets and that lags behind its peers in terms of provisions and its coverage ratio.

When the CNMV announced the ban, it said it wanted to avoid any loss of confidence in Liberbank and that the regulator was not considering extending the ban to other lenders for now.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) also issued a detailed statement that backed the move, explaining the urgent circumstances that led to it.

The CNMV said it had taken this decision after the recent stock price fall of Liberbank in the aftermath of Popular's rescue.

But it sought to draw a distinction between the two banks. One official said that Liberbank's situation was different to Popular, whose finances had been stressed.

Banco Popular, which had booked revised losses of €3.6 billion in 2016, was rescued after the ECB said there was a deterioration in its liquidity in the days leading to its rescue.

The CNMV said they had not found any evidence of any liquidity problems at Liberbank.

Liberbank was formed in 2011 from the merger of three regional savings banks and which controls around two percent of all Spanish deposits. Until its recent share price collapse, it was ranked as the eighth-biggest bank in Spain by market value.

Short-selling is the sale of a security that is not owned by the seller, or that the seller has borrowed and motivated by the belief that a security's price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price to make a profit.

Forbes announces annual celebrity rich list

Forbes announced its Celebrity 100 list earlier this week – the ‘definitive global index of who's making what in the business of entertainment’, the ranking tracks the world's highest-paid entertainers, who cumulatively banked $5.15 billion (€4.6 billion) pretax throughout the June 2016 to June 2017 scoring period.

Rapper and entrepreneur Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs landed on top with annual earnings of $130 million (€116 million).

Combs’ big payout was thanks to his Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, earnings from his Sean John clothing line and his partnership with Ciroc vodka.

Beyoncé moved into the second spot with $105 million (€93.7 million), courtesy of her best-selling Lemonade album and world tour, while Harry Potter author JK Rowling (who earned $95 million - €84.8 million) moved back into the top three – largely thanks to her Harry Potter spinoff movie franchise Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Rowling’s theme park earnings from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions at Universal Studios have also helped her financial surge. The novelist’s return to the list comes two weeks ahead of the 20th anniversary of her first book in the wizarding series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She is one of two British entries in the global top 10. Coldplay have secured eighth place with earnings of $88 million (€78.5 million), after failing to make the list in 2016.

Singer-songwriter Adele slipped from No 9 to 18th place with annual earnings of $69 million (€61.6 million). Sir Elton John is in joint 26th place with TV chef Gordon Ramsay, both with estimated earnings of $60 million (€53.5 million). Other British celebrities in the top 100 list include musician Sir Paul McCartney at No 32, golfer Rory McIlroy at 37, DJ and producer Calvin Harris at 40, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton at 46 and TV and music mogul Simon Cowell in 50th place.

Forbes ranks talent from across the entire entertainment industry to compile the annual list, and its findings are based on numbers from Nielsen, Pollstar and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry experts and many of the stars themselves.

British inflation jumps again in May

British inflation jumped to its highest level in nearly four years in May, tightening the squeeze on consumers who now face the added worry of political uncertainty after last week's inconclusive election.

The impact of the fall in the pound since last year's Brexit vote made itself felt as the higher costs of foreign holidays and of imported computer games and equipment helped push up consumer prices by 2.9 percent year-on-year.

That was its biggest annual increase since June 2013, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, and was above the median forecast of 2.7 percent in a Reuters poll of economists.

Credit card firm Visa said on Monday it saw the first annual fall in spending by consumers in nearly four years in May. The Bank of England (BoE) has said it will tolerate inflation above its target of 2 percent because so far there has been no knock-on effect on pay which could generate a longer-lasting inflation problem.

But the BoE had previously said it only expected inflation to reach the kind of levels it has now hit at the end of this year.

Trio in 800-mile charity cycle to Sanet y Negrals The sun shone bright in Sanet y Negrals on Saturday as family and friends gathered at the Benimeli roundabout to cheer on three cyclists who’d travelled an epic 800 miles from Woking, UK to raise funds for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.

Kieren Clark (28), Adam Jordan (31), and James Robinson (25) spent a total of eight days in the saddle, cycling ‘as the crow flies’ with no support and adding in some routes to emulate stages of the Tour De France, with some climbs reaching 1,300 metres above sea level.

Setting off from Woking on day one, the trio cycled 90 miles down to Portsmouth and boarded the 32-hour ferry to Bilbao.

Despite booking the ferry many months prior, the shorter 24-hour ferry was fully booked and Kieren aka ‘Mr Motivator’, Adam aka ‘Yogi’ and James aka ‘Petit Garcon’ found themselves playing ‘four hundred games of Uno’ to take their minds off their sea-sickness.

Finally in Bilbao, relieved to get off the ferry and ready for the second full-day of cycling, the guys covered 100 miles down to Espinosa de los Monteros in the province of Burgos, Castile and Leon.

On day three, they covered a not-to-be-sniffed-at 110 miles down to Iogrono, capital of the province of La Rioja.

Day four took the guys out of Iogrono on a 90-mile journey down to Soria.

On day five, they covered another 110 miles down to Calatyud in the Province of Zaragoza.

Day six saw the guys ride 100 miles down (or rather up) to Teruel, a high-altitude town in the mountainous Aragon region.

On the penultimate day seven, they covered 110 miles down to Betera, crossing into Valencian Community territory.

On the final day, the thought of jumping into the swimming pool at the finish line carried the guys the 100 miles from Betera down to Sanet y Negals, where they were met by Kieren’s mother, Diana and father, Tony, who live in the village, along with their friends.

When asked what the toughest aspect of the challenge was, Kieren said they were lucky having not had to repair any punctures along the way, however staying hydrated was a struggle at times, especially given they often found themselves ‘in the middle of nowhere’ in the Spanish countryside.

In the swimming pool with beverages firmly in hand, the guys were delighted to learn that their sponsorship total came in at just over £1,500, nearly twice their original target of £800.

Having learnt through a friend of the care and services that the Arthur Rank Hospice provide, supporting people

in Camrbidgeshire who are living with a life-limiting illness, raising funds for the charity was a ‘no-brainer’ for Kieren and his friends.

The Hospice’s care and services are delivered free of charge from the its purpose-built home at Shelford Bottom, Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in people’s home across Cambridgeshire via the Arthur Rank Community Team.

The funds raised by the guys will contribute towards the £7.45 million it costs annually to provide the broad array of care and services the Hospice offers to people who are living with a life-limiting illness and their loved ones.

Kieren, Adam and James started cycling together some three years ago and soon began setting themselves challenge after challenge, Kieren and James cycling to Paris soon afterwards.

When asked what’s next, Kieren said the guys are thinking of cycling ‘6 countries in 6 days’ in 2018, but also said they are open to suggestions!

Kieran, Adam and James express their greatest thanks to their sponsors and to Kieren’s wife, Aimee, who brought their bike boxes to Spain on a slightly more comfortable and considerably shorter journey by plane.

A full day of interactive activities is awaiting visitors to the Alfas Spiritual Foundation Mind, Body and Spirit fair on Saturday June 24, at Forum mare Nostrum in Alfas del Pi With stalls, workshops and educational talks on various interesting subjects there will be something for everyone.

‘Keep Abreast’, is a workshop on natural approaches to breast health; there will also be talks on the philosophy of Shumei; how to apply yoga to help combat dementia and the difference between psychic work and mediumship.

Around the World in (about) 80 Minutes The Careline Performing Arts and Dance Academy is proud to announce its end of term show - Around the World in (about) 80 Minutes.

The cast will perform this Saturday June 17 at the Careline Theatre Alcalali. Doors will open from 2.30pm for the curtain to rise at 3.00pm prompt.

Directed by professional choreographer and teacher Suzanna Mace, the show promises to be an exciting journey of song and dance from around the world.

Academy students both younger and older will be performing routines from ballet to flamenco and from India to Argentina.

The show will be followed by Careline’s annual end of term presentation.

Gazpacho… the ultimate summer soup I remember many years ago, being in Spain on holiday with friends in Ibiza. We were all still a little naïve and in awe of Spanish food, so were pretty limited in what we ordered in restaurants.

One evening, we were invited out to dinner in a traditional Spanish restaurant with some older acquaintances of our friends, who had apparently been holidaying abroad for years, so knew what to order.

At the restaurant, the acquaintance took over the ordering of food, choosing food for everyone, in-

Gazpacho recipe (serves four to six) INGREDIENTS 1 thick slice of bread (most people don’t use the crust, I do) 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into quarters 1 kilo ripe plum tomatoes, quartered and hard white parts removed 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar 6 tablespoons of olive oil salt METHOD Roast the bread in a frying pan without any oil, until the bread has dried, but has not browned yet.

Turn the bread around once. Mince the bread to breadcrumbs in a blender, set apart.

Cream the pepper in a blender or food processor. Then add the tomatoes, salt and garlic and cream. Mix in the oil, vinegar and breadcrumbs. Taste and add more salt if necessary, or add water if the soup is too creamy.

Poor into a serving bowl cover and let the soup chill in the fridge for at least an hour. cluding a starter of gazpacho soup.

When our soup arrived, bearing in mind we were in the middle of July, we all took a taste and were a little surprised, but also intrigued, by the tangy bowl of ice cold tomato soup, filled with chopped vegetables.

However, our ‘sophisticated’ acquaintance was furious that our soup had hung around the kitchen so long it had gone cold.

Summoning the waiter, he complained bitterly about his cold soup, before being told that’s how it was served in Spain.

Everytime I order this delicious, chilled, refreshing Spanish classic, I see the look of severe embarrassment on the face of the acquaintance I’ve never encountered since.

Now, for me, a chilled, refreshing, and delicious, a bowl of gazpacho is a must during Spain's sizzling summer months, particularly when I want to escape the midday sun.

As summer nears and temperatures begin to soar, Spaniards find a perfect respite from the heat in a chilly, refreshing bowl of gazpacho, either smooth and creamy, or rough and ready.

The Spanish idiom "de gazpacho no hay empacho" – means, "You can't get enough of a good thing" – which epitomises their love for the cold tomato soup, widely considered one of the most delectable dishes in Spanish cuisine.

Here’s a foolproof recipe to make the perfect gazpacho soup, that will delight your palate, and of course, those of your friends and even your acquaintances.

Classic, but with enough extras to keep it interesting. Whether you spike it with vodka or keep it virgin, the burst of sunny vitamins from the tomato juice and kick of spice will get you into gear in no time. Plus, it’s a great way to use up any leftover port or sherry still kicking around after Easter and perhaps, even Christmas. This version of the classic cocktail combines vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, port and sherry with a few dashes of Tabasco to turn up the heat.

Garnish with a celery stick and some tomatoes and olives to serve.

INGREDIENTS • vodka 50ml, (make sure it's a good quality one …... Stoly darling?)

• tomato juice 200ml • basil a handful • port 5ml • dry sherry 5 ml • Worcestershire sauce 5 dashes • Tabasco 5 dashes • creamed horseradish 1tsp • celery sticks, • baby plum tomatoes, olives to serve • lemon a squeeze of juice, plus a wedge to serve

METHOD • Put all of the ingredients, plus a pinch of salt and pepper, into one half of a c o c k t a i l shaker, and, rather than shaking, slowly pour into the other half of the shaker, then back again. Repeat this a few times.

• This will ensure that everything is well mixed. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and garnish with a celery stick, lemon wedge, tomatoes and olives to serve.

Water, water everywhere We all know that we need to drink more water, particularly in the hot summer months, when we sweat more and dehydration becomes a danger.

However, water is present in many other foods and liquids, so we may actually be getting enough without actually realising it.

Think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lost each day.

Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health.

When your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated. Fluid losses are accentuated in warmer climates, during strenuous exercise, in high altitudes, and in older adults, whose sense of thirst may not be as sharp.

Here are a few reasons to make sure you're drinking enough water or other fluids every day: 1. DRINKING WATER HELPS MAINTAIN THE BALANCE OF BODY FLUIDS Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. Through the posterior pituitary gland, your brain communicates with your kidneys and tells it how much water to excrete as urine or hold onto for reserves. When you're low on fluids, the brain triggers the body's thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee -anything but alcohol.

Alcohol interferes with the brain and kidney communication and causes excess excretion of fluids which can then lead to dehydration.

2. WATER CAN HELP CONTROL CALORIES For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn't have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help.

Food with high water content tends to look larger, its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full. Waterrich foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, oatmeal, and beans.

3. WATER HELPS ENERGIZE MUSCLES Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. When muscle cells don't have adequate fluids, they don't work as well and performance can suffer. Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. Follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fluid intake before and during physical activity. These guidelines recommend that people drink about 17 ounces of fluid about two hours before exercise. During exercise, they recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating.

4. WATER HELPS KEEP SKIN LOOKING GOOD Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. But don't expect over-hydration to erase wrinkles or fine lines. Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be

improved with proper hydration.

But once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids. You can also help "lock" moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

5. WATER HELPS YOUR KIDNEYS Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine, explains Guest. Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate. When you're getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions. If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones, especially in warm climates.

Try an oil treatment Celebrity stylist Scott Fontana recommends coating the hair in oil before diving in.

Apple cider vinegar The perfect at-home beauty remedy You may have already heard about all the incredible uses for apple cider vinegar (ACV). Like olive oil once was and as coconut oil still is, ACV is one of those powerful beauty staples that can be used for almost anything.

Dandruff Treatment: If you’re annoyed with unsightly flakes and itchy scalp, ACV may help to reduce those issues. Depending on how severe the condition is, you may have to do an overnight treatment. It may also require rigorous use until the pH balance in the scalp is restored.

DIY Face Mask: You can make yourself a simple ACV facial treatment at home that will do wonders for radiant skin.

Men’s health Run for your life

Driving around recently, it’s hard to not pass a runner, or jogger pounding the pavement, beachfront or walking trail. Whether they are in full technical kit and expensive running shoes, with their phone recording every stride, or jogging along in a baggy old T-shirt and beach shorts, you can see them at all times of the Spanish day and night.

Running is cheap, easy and reduces the risk of heart disease and early deaths, but do the health benefits outweigh those from other activities, such as walking, cycling or swimming?

Well, the answer is yes, because, according to a review of evidence in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Disease, runners live three years longer than non-runners.

You don’t even have to run fast, or for long, to see a benefit and you can drink, smoke, be overweight and still reduce your risk of dying early by running, by between 25% and 40%.

The authors of the review say that no other exercise has such an impact, an hour of running will, statistically speaking, increase your life expectancy by seven hours.

While running regularly can’t make you immortal, the review says it is more effective at prolonging life than walking, cycling or swimming.

Two of the authors of the review were also involved in a study published in 2014 that found a mere five to 10 minutes a day of running, at less than six miles an hour, reduced the risk of heart disease and early deaths from all causes.

Running is cheap, you can’t fake it, putting one foot in front of the other is easy and it’s always energetic.

Even a jog counts as moderately vigorous exercise and even if you are time poor, you need run for only half the time to get the same benefits as other sports.

Angelique Brellenthin, of the department of kinesiology at Iowa State University, one of the review’s authors, says it takes 105 minutes of walking to yield the same benefits as a 25-minute run.

There are tragic but rare deaths during races, but non-runners are twice as likely to die from sudden heart attacks and strokes as runners.

Brellenthin says that runners have higher levels of aerobic fitness, lower levels of body fat and smaller waists than those who do other activities.

Running may be particularly good at shifting abdominal fat too and unless you have a badly positioned kneecap, won’t be too hard on your knees. You only need to do 30 to 60 minutes a week to reap the benefits, so perhaps we should all search for the old running shoes, pick up a bottle of water and hit the road Jack!

How to court the ‘courtyard’ look Very often apartment living in Spain means having to make do with a poky terrace, with just enough room for a couple of chairs and a geranium, but generally, at least there may be something of a view, even if it is of the neighbor on the balcony opposite.

So, just how do you turn an unloved ground floor space into an elegant cared for courtyard?

The term 'courtyard garden' conjures up visions of stately containers, architectural balance and cool, shady corners.

Maybe your courtyard isn't there yet? Well, here is a sure-fire way to turn your outdoor space into a special place you'll enjoy and want to spend time in.

Here a few golden rules to help you get the perfect courtyard look: 1. The first rule with small spaces is - don't add too much.

Filling up a courtyard with pots and containers will make it look like a storage room. So think about using what you put in there to create structure for the whole space, just like you would in a room inside the house.

2. Don't let the boundaries overwhelm the view. If the fences or walls are all completely different, the enclosed space won't feel like a room. So work on getting all the boundaries, at least if not the same, working together.

3. Only put screening where it's absolutely necessary.

Courtyards can be overlooked by neighbours' windows and it's tempting to put up trellis or plants to block them off. But you'll also be cutting out light so use screening carefully.

4. Always put in comfortable seats. Unless you really like sitting on benches, try something a bit easier on the rear.

Outdoor sofas or rattan easy chairs look good and feel good.

5. Track the sun to make sure it reaches your sitting area, or opt for

shade, if you'd rather stay cool.

6. Hide the meeting place between the walls and floor as much as possible. It's one of the reasons courtyard gardens often look unwelcoming, seeing this join of the wall or fence and paving looks clinical and yard-like, so put something like containers around the edges to soften the area.

7. Because there's likely to be no grass in the area be really careful

about how you lay your paving, especially with the grouting that's used. In a small space the lines formed by grouting can become the most dominant feature in the courtyard. A good general rule for grouting is to go one shade lighter than the stone slabs, and recess it slightly.

Now you have the ‘look’, but what about the perfect plants for your new outdoor space. Try these tips: 1. Plants in containers can be used to establish the usable space within the courtyard. One way to do this is to keep them to the edges and group larger plants in the corners.

2. Courtyards are often shady: big-leaved, glossy, green plants will love these conditions (as long as they get enough water). Try Japanese aralia (Fatsia japonica), bear's breeches, (Acanthus mollis), and hostas.

3. Every plant needs to earn its keep in a small space, and evergreens are going to give a lot more payback than deciduous plants. Box and yew can be cut into shapes which will give year round structure.

4. As well as being shady, courtyards can also be sheltered, so it might be worth taking advantage of this by trying to grow some exotics which wouldn't survive in more open areas. Have a go with tree ferns, bananas, pittosporum and cordylines.

5. Because the boundaries are so important in courtyards, climbers will play a big part in the planting scheme. For a tender but wonderful evergreen with scented flowers in the summer try star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides).

How to: get the Pride rainbow flag reaction on Facebook Facebook has added a new rainbow flag reaction to its social network for a limited time so users can celebrate Pride month.

The flag, which has been a symbol of the LGBT community since 1978, joins the thumbs up and heart signs as well as excited, shocked, sad and angry emoji as a way to react on Facebook.

But Facebook’s addition isn’t immediately available to all users - the rainbow flag reaction will only appear as an option for users if they like Facebook’s LGBTQ page.

Microsoft debuts Xbox One X Ahead of the E3 games show in Los Angeles, Microsoft recently unveiled the latest games console in its line-up - a more powerful version of the Xbox One called the Xbox One X. To be released on 7 November, the Xbox One X will cost £449 (€509) in the UK. The system, which runs games at 4K ultraHD and 60 frames-per-second (fps), was labelled ‘the most powerful console ever made’ by Phil Spencer, head of Xbox.

It is also the smallest Xbox yet.

It joins the Xbox One S - a slimmer version of the Xbox One that supports 4K video streaming - in the roster of consoles that make up Microsoft’s latest console generation.

Sony, too, has a console with 4K capabilities - the PS4 Pro - which it released in November last year.

However, the PS4 Pro’s specifications -

including memory and processor speed - are lower than those of the Xbox One X.

It boasts 12 gigabytes of RAM to the PS4

Pro’s 8 gigabytes, for example and 6 teraflops of graphics processing power compared to 4.12.

Plus, unlike Sony’s machine, Microsoft’s is

able to play 4K ultra-HD Blu-ray discs.

However, while the Xbox One X is capable

of supporting virtual reality gaming, there was almost no mention of this during the presentation and no demonstrations of games that use VR headsets.

The console will also be immediately

compatible with all existing Xbox One games.

It will ‘scale up’ games not made at 4K resolution to enhance their visuals.

Road Test - Citroen C4 Picasso

I can’t think of any cars that are officially named after notable people other than the manufacturers themselves.

That is until I find myself driving the Citroen C4 Picasso. It’s quite a compliment to the world famous artist and I’d never given it an ounce of thought until now. The difficulty with such a decision is that it must live up to the high and exacting standards of its namesake. It all falls apart if it doesn’t.

Picasso’s name first appeared on the Xsara back in 1999.

Picasso, the Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright spent most of his adult life in France so it is a great gesture to name a vehicle after him. Incidentally, his most expensive painting entitled Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, created in the span of just a single day in 1932, sold for more than £85m. I wonder why Spanish car company Seat didn’t beat Citroen to it and name one of their vehicles after the great man.

Naming this people mover after the famous painter is arguably apt because twice married he had four children so this sizeable vehicle would have been much appreciated by him, I reckon. It is also well designed, pleasing to look at from the side especially with its alloy wheels and it boasts quite a striking front so the design aspect should also have received his thumbs up.

With its large boot that easily swallows a pushchair and travel cot as well as food shopping there is enough space on the floor at the rear for any additional luggage. And there always is when the Saunders family go on a jaunt. Three child seats are easily accommodated in the back and Harriett (5) and Heidi (6) do like the folding picnic tables complete with night time reading light. They also have controls for their own air vents. The large boot lid itself opens and shuts unaided; simply click the proximity key.

Driver and front passenger are happy because their seats not only have folding armrests they also come with a massage facility. The one thing I find difficult to come to terms with though is the lack of a speedometer in front of the steering wheel meaning that the driver has to glance at the centre console to see the speedometer. With so many speed cameras around these days I find myself frequently doing this. With its responsive diesel unit and six speed manual gearbox that on occasions is given to notchy indecisive gear changes, it will quickly reach speed limits so it is just as well it is fitted

with a speed limiter and cruise control. Engine start/stop kicks in at the traffic lights helping with fuel economy.

There are mixed feelings about the sat nav because on one journey I find that I can actually rely on it to get me out of the depths of the Dorset countryside without a hitch. But on another occasion it is of absolutely no use whatsoever when in the New Forest. Surely it allows for a postcode to be inputted but try as I might I cannot make it work. Thankfully we have a map.

The C4 has an electric handbrake and as we are stuck in a traffic jam on a hill of all places, on one of Dorset’s main roads, I am surprised and reassured to see that when the handbrake is released the vehicle still holds itself in place with no rolling whatsoever so that I can select first gear and move off without breaking into a sweat.

With a ride height taller than even some 4x4s the C4 is a capable motorway cruiser and overtaker.

Nearing the end of my test I

suddenly recall another vehicle that celebrated a notable individual and that was the Churchill tank from the Second World War. Citroen has really hit on a great idea here and more manufacturers should follow suit with this excellent form of commemoration, in my opinion. I can see it now: the Jaguar Thatcher, the Range Rover Bowie or the Rolls Royce Nelson.

Advertising does sell new cars The annual New Car Code of Practice survey conducted by The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has found that around a quarter (24%) of consumers are swayed in their choice of new car as a result of seeing

an advert online, on TV or in print. The annual study looks at the buying experience and satisfaction of motorists who have visited a franchise dealer belonging to any of the 38 vehicle manufacturers that are accredited to The Motor Ombudsman’s Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved New Car Code of Practice. Its comprehensive Motor Industry Code covers over 99% of all new car purchases in the UK. The research, which polled nearly 2,400 people, showed that male buyers and 17 to 25 year olds are more inclined to take the plunge after

seeing a commercial; whilst those approaching their thirties and motorists aged 40 to 55 are less likely to act on impulse.

Overall, the research found that 93% of cars that the survey participants bought matched the content of the advert, whilst respondents scored an encouraging average of 4.8 out of a maximum 5.0 for their satisfaction with their vehicle, with the over 65s proving amongst the happiest with their car. Customers also gave manufacturers a total tally of 4.7 where further assistance was needed.

When asked specifically about their purchase, the condition of the vehicle in which they received

it, ranked highest in the study at 4.8, with the assistance and knowledge of sales staff considered impressive by motorists at 4.7 overall, which mirrored last year’s findings. The explanation of terms and conditions of the warranty achieved the lowest score of 4.5, which also echoed the result seen in the 2015 survey. Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “In today’s digital era, consumers are never too far away from a brand encouraging them to buy a product. Although the lure of advertising can prove a powerful influencer when choosing a car, it is important for motorists to

check, for added peace of mind, that the retailer is accredited to a recognised CTSI-approved Code of Practice, such as that offered by The Motor Ombudsman. The study clearly shows the value of franchise dealers and

vehicle manufacturers adhering to a Code, as scores have once again remained consistently high across the board, which is undoubtedly a very positive trend for consumers and the industry.”

Bonalba Bowls 3rd Annual Mixed Triples open competition was held on Saturday with 96 bowlers from various clubs from throughout the Costa Blanca competing for the Cup and prize money.

Bankia contributed to the sponsorship of this event, which was won by, Paul Truncheon, Jean McLaughlin and Clive Scott from El Cid. In second place were Velia Wood and Alan Phillips of Javea Green with Trefor Evans from Benitachell.

Third position was taken by Dudley Davies, Carol Davies and Dave Roberts all from Benitachell.

Bonalba Bowls is situated in Calle Ressol, Bonalba and in October this year will celebrate their 9th anniversary.

They welcome all new members and offer tuition to novices, from qualified instructors.

Costa Blanca Mixed Tennis League To mark the end of the Costa Blanca mixed league season 2016/2017, a mixed tournament was hosted by Juan Manglano at Club de Tenis Buenavista, Benissa, last weekend.

BBC 4-4-2 from Peter Well respected Benitatchell Bowls Club member Peter Collins and daughter Maria from Dragon Insurance, sponsored a two day event of rinks and pairs which will forthwith be known as the Peter Collins 4-4-2.

A total of sixty four players participated in teams of 4 and the winners on maximum points were Jeff Richards, Alan Guest, Ruth Meadows and Joyce Pope.

Runners up, falling just one shot behind, were Bob Bailey, Steve Griffin, Linda Richards and Jennifer Nesteroff.

Couples from eight different countries competed throughout the afternoon, playing five matches each.

The overall winners were Moira Smith and John Vickers who won the final playoff against Elaine Lurie and Neil Cooper.

Prizes were presented at a BBQ after the tournament. The Division 1 trophy was won by Club de Tenis L’Ancora, captained by Gary Wood and the Division 2 winners, who also gained promotion were the JITC B team from La Sella captained by Debbie Wilcock.

Over the eight month season matches have been played home and away throughout the Costa Blanca area and it was noticeable that the competition this year was more intense than ever.

Teams from JITC La Sella, Los Pinos, L'Ancora, Altea Hills, Buenavista and Sol Park all had to contend with a longer and more unstable Winter weather period, resulting in many matches having to be re-arranged.

The success of the league was largely due to the considerable efforts of the organisers , Noelle Vickers from JITC La Sella, Pedreguer, Graham Wallace from Sol Park, Moraira and Paul Silcock from Altea Hills Club.

Nadal achieves ‘La Decima’ An emotional Rafael Nadal described his 10th French Open title as the perfect end to a perfect fortnight after he made history at Roland Garros on Sunday.

The Spaniard, 31, won 6-2 6-3 6-1 to secure 'La Decima' at Roland Garros, and his 15th major title.

Nadal, who won without dropping a set in the tournament for the third time, said he could not have imagined such success when he first won 12 years ago.

Victory against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland made him the first man to win any of the grand slam events 10 times.

“This has been, I think, a perfect Roland Garros for me,” said Nadal, who dropped just 35 games in total on his way to a 15th grand slam title but his first for three years.

Shown a montage of his 10 victories before the trophy presentation, a clearly moved Nadal, said the historic nature of the triumph added to his satisfaction.

“It is true that this one is going to be one of the more special for the number, for what happened on the ceremony after the final, for so many things,” he said. “And because I am 31 already and not a kid any more, today was a very important day for me.”

Nadal said when he first won the title in 2005 he would not have imagined he would still be playing in 2017, "I didn't really think I'd have such a long career and win so many tournaments." He said, adding with a smile, "In 2005, I thought in 2017 I'd be fishing on my boat in Mallorca. As I like to say, if I can do it, someone else can do

it,” he said. “But you need the right circumstances, the right ingredients to win 10 French Open titles.

“I don’t know if I will ever get to meet the player who will do better than I did. It has been very special to me, and it’s true that it is unprecedented. Trust me, I’m very happy that I’m the one who did it. I’m very happy.”

Lois dives to gold Football is back British diver, Lois Toulson won European Championship gold in the 10m platform as she finalises her preparations for next month's World Championships.

The 17-year-old scored 330.70 in Kiev to finish ahead of Russian duo Anna Chuinyshena (326.90) and Iuliia Timoshinina (313.30).

"To be honest, I did not expect this victory," said Toulson. "I am not totally satisfied with my dives yet."

The World Championships take place in Budapest, Hungary from 14 July.

Toulson is expected to compete both individually and with Tonia Couch in the synchronised event.
