Charity directors and founders Wayne and Des Bellamy-Wright, were invited onto the set of the hit TV show, now in production for its tenth series, to meet some of the cast and crew and collect the cheque, which Derren happily signed over.

Actors, including Kate Fitzgerald (who plays Loretta Chase), Bobby Knutt (Eddie Dawson), Josh Ford (Rob Dawson), Steve Edge (Billy Dawson) and Julie Graham (Sheron Dawson), lined up alongside Wayne and Des to watch the signing over.

The huge amount, €10,181,86 to be exact, was raised at a charity fundraising event last year, whilst the Benidorm actors and crew were in the resort filming series nine, currently airing on ITV 1.

Denia coastal restoration work complete

by Tahnee Wright Coastal restoration work is complete on the most affected area of the beach of Marineta Cassiana, Denia - next to the southern breakwater.

The area where water was stagnant has now been elevated in height, with some 700 tonnes of sand having been deposited.

The sand deposited comes from the surplus accumulated in the port area, which was blown over from the Cagarritar beach during the storms.

The extraction of the sand from the port area was initially suggested by The Provincial Service of Alicante Coasts and the city council had to request authorisation from the Generalitat Valenciana.

The barrier erected on the beach throughout the winter to curb the regression of the coast helped to retain sand in the area, however the storms of December last year and January this year caused the submerged sand bar to emerge, occluding sand-algae which, due to lack of oxygen, caused bad odours and gas.

The problem worsened when the barriers erected on the beach were removed on April 1 and technicians first extracted the sand causing bad odours and thereafter filled the puddle that had formed with the sand from the port area.

35 per cent home improvement grants in Benissa Benissa City Council signed an agreement last week with the Ministry of Housing, Public Works and Territorial Structuring to promote home improvements across the municipality The agreement provides for the creation of an ‘information point’ for those persons or companies looking for advice and in some cases, funding – as the city plans to offer grants of up to 35 per cent or more.

Juan Manolo, Urban Planning Councillor and Mari Carme Ronda, Urban Planning Strategy Councillor signed the agreement in Valencia with the Minister of Housing, Public Works and Territorial Structuring, Maria Jose Salvador.

Benissa was one of the first Valencian municipalities to get involved in the initiative, which aims to encourage regeneration and urban renewal across the region.

Continued from front page The raucous evening of karaoke and fun saw the famous faces from one of the UK’s top rated TV series let their communal hair down to belt out some of their favourite numbers to a delighted audience of holidaymakers and local residents.

Derren, a familiar face around the many karaoke bars in town, is well known for his love of the Japanese singing phenomenon, which has taken the world by storm, since the 1970’s and regularly persuades other members of the cast and crew to join him.

He and his Benidorm team came up with the idea of putting on their own show to indulge in his favourite pastime and raise some money for a local charity at the same time.

Wayne, also a famous face on the Benidorm entertainment scene for his outrageous stage persona Levi G, has been a tireless charity fundraiser ever since he moved to the area, particularly for the children and vulnerable women living in the Emaus Residential homes.

Wayne and Des had just set up their own Busy Bees Charity, with an aim of bypassing the beauacracy of the Emaus organisation to target the kids, young adults and mothers with babies most at risk and in need of help.

Busy Bees, became an obvious choice for Derren, when choosing which charity would benefit from their fundraising efforts, having seen the work Wayne had done to help the underprivileged children in the past.

So, on the night of their Karaoke event, every penny the cast and crew collected went to the charity.

For his part, Derren, visibly moved by the plight of the kids, had some fantastic news to pass onto Wayne and Des. The cast and crew had such a great time at last year’s event, they are planning another one later this month.

Derren confirmed: ‘We were amazed how much we raised on the last one, so this time, we have set ourselves a target to beat last year’s amount. We have the venue and the date, Friday 26 May at the UK Cabaret Club in the Rincon de Loix.’

The evening will follow the same format as last year, with the majority of the available cast in attendance.

Tickets, costing 5€ each will go on sale around a week before the show and will be on sale at the venue itself and at the nearby Hotel Presidente.

They will be sold on a first come, first served basis as the venue has a limited capacity of between 280 to 300 guests.

As with last year’s event all ticket sales, door charges and money from buckets passed around the audience, will be added to cash raised from a prize raffle and auction for one-off gems of memorabilia from the Benidorm series, including signed scripts from Derren.

Last year’s final total was a true testimony to the fabulous members of the ‘Benidorm Family’, who gave their time freely for the charity and to the generosity of the audience who digged deep into their pockets on the night.

Receiving the cheque, beside the pool of the fictional ‘Solana Resort’, otherwise known as the Sol Ocas Pelicanos Hotel, Wayne expressed his gratitude to fundraisers: ‘The Emaus homes are facing a desperate crisis right now’, he said, referring to the current situation, which could see them closed within two weeks, ‘But we will make sure that every penny of this amazing total goes directly to the women and children most in need.’

Alcoy man appears in court facing child abuse charges

by Andy Mansell A court in Alicante heard last week how an Alcoy man is alleged to have sexually abused a girl of five, with whom he shared the same house, over a two year period, before the victim reported the acts to her grandmother.

The unnamed defendant denies all charges, claiming they were falsely made because of ill feeling between his and the girls families.

The activities are alleged to have occurred between 2013 and 2015, when the abuse came to light, upon which the man was arrested and kept in preventive detention until the case came before the court earlier this week.

During the two years the alleged abuse occurred, the accused stayed for periods in the house where the child lived as he is the brother of a close friend of the girl’s Mother who also shared the house.

The alleged abuse took place when the man was alone in the house with the girl.

The victim did not appear before the court, but the jury listened to a pre-recorded interview the girl gave to a child psychologist,

where she alleged that the accused covered her mouth to prevent her screaming during the attacks and threatened to not take her and her dog to the park if she told anyone of the abuse.

Jurors also heard evidence from the girl’s family and teachers during the trial which lasted several hours.

The teachers reported that the girl seemed to be more sexually advanced than children of the same age particularly towards boys, but they attributed it to incidents she may have seen on television.

A source close to the courts told the Spanish press that doctor’s reports for the alleged victim did not prove conclusively that the abuse actually took place.

The defence team questioned the grandmother of the girl on the reasons why she didn’t go to the police immediately the girl told her of the abuse, but waited two months before making the allegations.

Her response was that she was worried about the disgust and shame the allegations would bring to the family of the accused man.

Father arrested on suspicion of murdering 11-year-old son The father of an 11-year-old boy found dead in the mountainous area of Oza-Cesuras, northern Spain has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The father, who suffers psychiatric problems, was under a restraining order from the boy’s mother until 2013, having previously been charged with coercion and denounced for threatening behaviour.

The mother went to the Police Station in La Coruna on Sunday to report him missing. His father had been taking care of him over the weekend and failed to return him to his mother at the agreed time.The National Police initiated a search for the boy and located the father in a hostel in Labanou 2km away. The boy was found dead in a wooded area of Rodeiro de Oza on Monday night and his body was taken to the University Hospital Complex in La Coruna for an autopsy. Although analysis continues, sources indicate the boy received a blow to the head with a blunt object.

Pablo Gonzalez Cacheiro – Mayor of La Coruna confirmed officers have inspected the marital home in search of evidence, ‘I know the family and I am here with them. It is hard to know what to say in these cases and even harder to believe that an 11-year-old boy has lost his life.’

At a press conference, Rocio Fraga - Councillor for Equality and Diversity of the City of La Coruna, described the death of the boy as a ‘clear case of domestic violence’ where a parent uses the child to attack their partner.

The City Council of La Coruna suspended municipal events and declared two days of official mourning for the boy, who was a student of the San Francisco Javier school, where his mother works.

Drunk, drugged and banned driver kills cyclists on N-332

by Tahnee Wright A DRIVER who was both under the influence of alcohol and drugs and banned from driving ploughed her Ford Mondeo head-first in to a group of six cyclists from the Llebeig de Javea Athletics Club on the N-332 on Sunday morning.

The 28-year-old Spanish woman from Gandia, killed two of the cyclists - Eduardo Monfort Gasent (28years-old) and Luis Alberto Contreras (50-years old), both from Javea – instantly.

As time of print, the three others - Andres Contreras (son of Luis Alberto Contreras), Scott Gordon and Jose Antonio Albi – remain in hospital fighting for their lives.

The accident occurred at kilometre 206 of the N-332 between Oliva and Denia.

The Centre for Emergency Coordination of the Generalitat Valenciana sent medicalised helicopter Alfa 9 to the area. It is believed one of the cyclists had to be revived at the scene before being airlifted to hospital after going into cardiac arrest.

The remaining cyclists were taken by ambulance to local hospitals La Fe Hospital in Valencia, La Ribera

de Alzira (Valencia) and Hospital de Denia - MarinaSalud.

In a statement to the press, Former Llebeig de Javea Athletics Club President Julio Almazan said that the driver was on the wrong side of the road when she ploughed into the cyclists.

He said: ‘We’re all still in a state of shock. I’ve been told the driver hit the members of our club headon after invading their carriageway and tested positive for cocaine as well as failing a drink-drive test.’

‘It happened around 8.30am so it’s possible she fell asleep at the wheel as she was heading home after a night out partying.’

The only cyclist who escaped serious injury is Jaime Escortell, the current club President.

Mr Escortell said in a statement to the press: ‘we didn’t have time to say anything, we saw the car coming across the road diagonally and it swept us away. The car was going very fast, it didn’t brake at all.’

Mayor of Javea Jose Chulvi called an extraordinary plenary session of the Town Council on Sunday to decree three days of official mourning and the suspension of all fiestas and sporting events planned during that period.

Facebook has been flooded with tributes, the Mayor himself offering his deepest condolences to the ‘the relatives, friends and companions of Eduardo and Luis Alberto’ and sending a ‘message of strength and hope for Jose Antonio, Andres and Scott to recover as soon as possible.’

The Llebeig de Javea Athletics Club said ‘we hope the full force of the law falls on the driver that caused this accident and tragedy.’

The driver was arrested at the scene by the Guardia Civil of Gandia and was sent to prison earlier this week on two charges of invol-

untary manslaughter, along with three of injury amongst others.

She received a driving ban in 2014 for being drunk behind the wheel and never attended the awareness course to recover her licence.

In court, she claimed to ‘remember nothing’.

Changes for Benissa City Council Benissa is implementing a new administrative model just a few months after the resignation of Mayor Juan Bautista Roussillon.

by Tahnee Wright The new model will see increased participation in European projects (Eurodisea), the reorganisation of the function structure of the City Council and new tender processes amongst other changes.

The changes come after a review was commissioned to study the structure and working methods of the Council.

The review detected malfunctions, including obsolete systems of work, the need

to incorporate more human resources and backlogs of work across numerous municipal departments.

A representative from Benissa’s governing team said, ‘the work being done in these months, in collaboration with the team of technical specialists and general municipal team has allowed in a few months to achieve efficiency levels of service more appropriate and consistent with the needs that demand our town and our citizens.’

Bike kids take on Finestrat village

by Andy Mansell One hundred and fifty children from 15 schools within the Alicante Province, took part in a cycle challenge around the streets of Finestrat Pueblo last week.

The school children, aged between 5 and 14 were taking part in the second Trofeo Escuelas de Ciclismo de Finestrat.

The day began in Carrer L’hort with 40 pupils aged 13 to 14, taking on the first gymkhana, a time trial around traffic cones, won by local boy Jaume Guardeno of Alfas del Pi.Three other local children also performed well in the various skill tests of the day. Jaume Lloret who won in his first year fry category; And Hugo Ruiz and Josep Miquel Climent, who achieved the 8th position in the 2nd year and first year children, respectively.The overall winning school of the challenge day, which is part of the Provincial Challenge calendar, was Alfàs del Pi, which managed to add 40 points to their running total.

Finestrat Sports Councellor David Alarcon, speaking after the event, said: “We had a fantastic day in the village, full of passion for sport amongst young people”, he said. “The extra people the event brought to the pueblo helped to bring more business to our bars and restaurants too”.

It’s a sign in Oliva Since the Delegations of Works, Services and Tourism was brought into action under directing councillors Blai Peiro and Mireia Morera, new street signs have been erected between Cami de l'Aigua Blanca i del Cami Vell de Denia in Oliva.

The street signs will mean visitors to the municipality can easily navigate between the town, the beach, the camping areas and the residential areas. The street signs will also provide greater security on two of the busiest roads of the town, especially in summer.

The councillors of the municipal group Projecte Ciutadans d'Oliva (Citizens Project Oliva) said that the new signs ‘will improve access for tourists in the municipality.’

Benissa Social Services receive €226,760

by Tahnee Wright Benissa’s regidoria d'Accio Social has received a €226,760 grant from the Conselleria d'Igualtat i Politiques Inclusives.

The grant will be used to improve social services and assistance provisions for families and children (SEAF) with a substantial portion of the funds being used to employ more staff - psychologists, teachers, social workers and administrative workers.

The remaining portion of the funds will be used to cover expenses for the emergency programme and the home help programme along with SEAF. Juan Manuel, Councillor for Social Action said, ‘with increased aid which we give more attention and we can be closer to more people in need,’ subsidies that are in line with the increase in social support the government team, committed to greater social welfare of citizens.’

The €226,760 is an increase on grants received in previous years in line with new criteria of the Conselleria d'Igualtat i Politiques Inclusives.

Quiet please, Calpe!

The City of Calpe has made amendments to its noise-pollution regulations to guarantee the rest of both residents and tourists during the high season. The regulations already govern the use of heavy machinery during the summer season, however changes will prohibit all construction/ building works throughout the municipality between August 1 and August 31. After August, between September 1 and September 15, all construction/ building works throughout the municipality, whether public or private, should be carried out between 9.00am and 2.00pm and again between 5.00pm and 8.00pm, allowing for afternoon siestas. Works of public interest - required for reasons of necessity or safety - will be exempt from the regulations.

The council provides clarification on the different activities considered to cause noise-pollution as well as advice on how to minimise their effects and appeals to all members of the community to familiarise themselves with the regulations to allow the high season to pass as smoothly as possible.

Medieval market draws the crowds to Benidorm Last weekend’s medieval market in the old town of Benidorm drew almost a quarter of a million people to the town, according to the local business association that organized the event AICO. This year’s market was the largest ever in terms of stallholders, musical performers and people attending.

The event took over four locations in the city, Parque d’Elche, Santa Domingo, Tomas Ortuna and Calle Mercado, with each area concentrating on different themes.

The largest concentration of events took place directly adjacent to Parque d’Elche otherwise known as Dove Park, where over a hundred stalls selling artisan products and food, combined with food stands and more than 50 street performances and entertainment shows took place.

In Santa Domingo the local tapas bars of tapas alley embraced the theme of the market, with staff dressed in traditional costumes.For the first time this year, children were catered for with kids zones located in Tomas Ortuna and Calle Mercado.Organisers of the event are delighted with the response to the event, which has grown in size over the years and fully intend to increase its growth next year with an extra themed area added within the town.

EMAUS Association supported

by Tahnee Wright The Mayors of Vergel, Relleu, Benissa, Alfaz del Pi, Altea and Polop met with the Ministry of Employment and Social Security last Thursday to request that the debt owed by the EMAUS Association is written off.

The Association declared bankruptcy just over two years ago after the former managers accumulated a debt of €5 million to Social Security.

The EMAUS Association is a nonprofit association that currently serves over 100 children under the protection of the Generalitat Valenciana, women

victims of gender violence and people with functional diversity.

In addition, the Emaus Association also manages a senior centre which houses over 70 elderly residents.The mayors signed a petition addressed to the Minister, Fatima Banez and attended the rally held by EMAUS employees later that day.

World Migratory Bird Day was celebrated on May 10 this year and to commemorate, The Department of Environment and Climate Change at Denia City Council have collaborated with the ‘Magic & Nature’ company to organise a day of activities on Sunday May 14. The initiative aims to promote understanding of the importance of the local area in the migratory travel of birds and the need to protect them and prevent threats. In the morning, participants will visit the natural park of the Marjal de Pego-Oliva and enjoy a guided walking tour through different habitats of the park along with a science-based session with expert Francisco Atienzar. In the evening, a catamaran will take participants out to the marine reserve of the Cap de Sant Antonti for a bird and cetacean spotting session.The bus for the morning session will depart from parque de Torrecremada at 9.00am and return at 1.00pm.

The boat for the evening session will be on the water between 6.00pm and 7.30pm. Both sessions are free and places are limited - anyone wishing to taking part should email magicandnature16@gmail.com.

Injured owls Bradford’s Small World Film released in Oliva Festival presents… DENIA! The Department of Environment in Oliva was proud to confirm the release of two tawny owls earlier this week in the Santa Anna mountainous area.

The owls were found injured in the street by a resident of Oliva in February.

Over the past three months, they have been nursed back to health at the Protected Birds Recovery Centre ‘La Granja’.

Attending the release was Councillor for Environment, Imma Ibiza, technicians of the municipality and around 20 students from the CEIP Santa Anna d’Oliva primary school.

The Councillor for Environment explained to the children the importance of owls in the local ecosystem as they ‘help to control rodent rates in the municipality.’

Anyone who finds a protected bird such as an owl should contact 112 or the local police. .

by Tahnee Wright As a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Denia is participating in Bradford’s Small World Film Festival throughout June.

The film festival is open to all members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and the theme of the 2017 edition is ‘My City’. Denia’s short film focuses on the famous Red Gamba and fuses the art of gastronomy with music - two arts very

rooted in the cultural tradition of the city.

The video will screen throughout June on a large outdoor screen, located in the city centre of Bradford, with a potential audience of 500,000 people.

The video will also screen at the University of Bradford. Bradford is the world’s first UNESCO City of Film. This permanent title bestows international recognition on Bradford as a world centre for film because of the city’s rich film heritage, its inspirational movie locations and its many celebrations of the moving image through the

city’s film festivals, filmed related events and unique approach to learning about film and learning with film.Participation in the Bradford Small World Film Festival sees the gastronomic and cultural values of Denia travelling to European and international scope, which, in the words of the city council, creates ‘a very positive impact for the promotion of the city.’

The winning five films chosen by the jury will be screened at the UCCN XI Annual Meeting to be held in Enghien-les-Bains, France, from June 29 to July 2 2017.

Anemonea cancer Javea Municipal charity receive cash Mercat plots up boost from Giving4Giving for grabs

by Andy Mansell Last week the Giving4Giving fundraising team handed over a sizeable donation of €1500 to the Anemonea breast cancer charity based in Benidorm.

Speaking on behalf of the fundraisers, Gary James said: “We at Giving4Giving were happy to make the donation to such a great charity that does fantastic work in the area.” Said Gary, “Our team has now donated over 76,000 euros to charity and will continue to do so with your help.”

Giving4Giving are a registered cancer support charity based in La Nucia with three shops selling donated items to members of the public.

They have also recently opened a fundraising auction house at the charity’s headquarters in La Nucia.

The next auction is on Friday May 19 and they will be holding further events on the 3rd Friday of every subsequent month.

They are asking local residents and long term holidaymakers to donate

The City of Javea has opened applications for the six plots currently vacant within the Municipal Mercat.

The Department of Economic Development offers the plots to businesses for a term of 10 years, with prices ranging from €1,855.96 (plots 4, 12 and 14) to €5,567.88 (plots 30-31 and 34).

Giving4Giving raised 1500 euros in donations for the Benidorm based Anenomea breast cancer charity

News from Jalon Valley A.R.C A.R.C. stall at the Xalonia Fayre On what was a beautiful sunny weekend, Jalon buzzed with activity as hundreds of people browsed stalls selling local produce, jewellery and wine and charities welcomed many supporters.

A.R.C. had a tombola stall with lots of gifts to be won plus books, toys, DVDs and CDs. The charity extends its greatest thanks to Jayne, Sally and all the volunteers who helped on the stall, plus the supporters who raised over €400 towards food and vet bills for all the animals in A.R.C.’s care.

Jalon Valley Help May Fayre A.R.C. apologises to all its supporters but due to other commitments, the charity is now unable to have a stand at this fayre.

A.R.C. is expecting 14 new kittens all under five-weeks-old to arrive from three dif- ferent sources. The litters must be kept separate until they are old enough to be blood tested for Feline Aids and Leukaemia, however, space is very limited, as are funds.

So, although A.R.C. will make room for the kittens, they are appealing for donations towards the cost of testing and inoculations (it costs €26 per kitten for the test alone, so €364 for these litters).

Choirs join forces to perform cancer charity Two International choirs will come together this coming Friday May 12 to perform a concert in La Nucia for the AECC cancer charity.

The two choirs Canticorum and Cantares are made up of a total of 80 members from many nationalities and will sing under the baton of Belgian Musical Director Guy Verhelst.

Award winning male voice choir delight Teulada audience

by Andy Mansell An audience of over 500 filled the Auditori TeuladaMoraira recently to enjoy a magnificent evening of choir music from the 80-strong, internationally acclaimed Pontarddulais Male Choir, the 40-strong local Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir and Dolce Divas, with MC Paul Freeman.

The Welsh choir opened the concert with three songs and immediately impressed the audience with their power and control. After a beautiful set from Dolce Divas, comprising Claire Harkness-Post and Kirsty Glen, the Pontarddulais boys were back and finished the first half with a stirring rendering of Men of Harlech.

After the interval, there was a change of mood with the Pontarddulais choir, who have won a record 16 first places at the Welsh Royal National Eisteddfod, singing three well-known songs, including Liverpool FC's anthem You'll Never Walk Alone. It was then the turn of the local Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir, who once again changed the mood and wowed the audience with five songs including the South African antiapartheid folk song Senzenina and the song most often requested by their growing army of followers You Raise Me Up. After a final set from the Welsh, the two choirs totalling 120 male voices joined together to lift the roof off the Auditori with three songs of very different moods - Speed Your Journey from Verdi's opera Nabucco, the 60's pop song Softly and a rousing arrangement of the Rhythm of Life. During the stirring finale, when

the audience joined the choirs in singing the Welsh national anthem, several red dragon national flags were waved in the auditorium, rounding off what was a remarkable evening of music rarely seen here on the Costa Blanca and enjoyed by ex-pats and Spanish alike. One member of the audience wrote to say "Thank you for a wonderful musical and emotional experience."

The concert reunited two brothers, singing together on stage for the first time since they were boys of 6 and 8 years old back in Wales. Alun Price joined the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir when he retired to Spain 10 years ago, having only previously sung in church choirs when he lived in Wales. His brother Gwynne has been a member of the Pontarddulais Male Choir for 15 years and neither of them thought they would one day be singing together in a theatre in Spain.

Javea summer school funding initiative

The Department of Education of the City of Javea will run its summer school programme (d’Estiu) throughout July and August.

The summer school provides a range of socio-educational activities for children born between 2005 and 2013. The Department of Social Services has confirmed it will offer funding to support families who would like their children to attend the programme. Applications for the funding opened this week on Monday and will close on Friday May 19. For more information and/ or to collect an application form, head to the second floor of the Centro Social between 9.00am and 2.00pm Monday to Friday.Completed applications should be submitted to the Oficina de Atencion al Ciudadano between 8.15am and 2.00pm Monday to Friday.

La Nucia workshop on edible wild plants

Last weekend, 30 university students and members of the public attended a free workshop at the CEM Captivador (Captivador Environmental Education Centre) to learn about the medicinal and nutritional virtues of wild plants used traditionally in the Alicante region.The five hour day course, under the tuition of Professor Antonio Belda Antolí, was organised by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Alicante through the University of La Nucía, with the collaboration of the City of La Nucía.

During the workshop, the attendees of all ages analysed wild plants with an ethnobotanical interest that have been used in a traditional way in the province of Alicante.

The objectives of the course were for students to have the ability to identify the main edible and medicinal wild plants and so learn the uses and custom associated with these plants and furthermore to understand the production of the traditional herbal beverages of the province.

In the practical session of the workshop, students distilled herbs to obtain essential oils and also made different herbal teas and infusions and learning of their medicinal purposes. Finally, a variety of different traditional drinks were prepared from wild plants.Additionally, Professor Belda taught the students to obtain infusions using solar energy, as well as the use of a traditional alembic and the recipes of different traditional Valencian infusions and drinks.

At the end of the workshop, the students were able to take home sample bottles of all the practices performed during the day.

Montgo Chorale bid farewell to Gordon Lawson

by Tahnee Wright The Santa Cruz Church in Pedreguer will play host to a very special concert of the Montgo Chorale on Sunday May 28, commemorating Gordon Lawson’s final performance directing the choir after nine years.

Having had a property in Spain since 1973, Gordon Lawson decided in 2002 that the prospect of moving permanently to Spain held an attraction that was irresistible. Once here, Gordon looked for an opportunity to become involved in music. He soon became Organist in L’Erimtia del Popul, the Director of the English choir, then the first Director of Coral Classica Javiense.

He followed Miguel Cunha as director of the German Choir and in 2007, on leaving the Javea choir, he founded the Montgo Chorale.

The Montgo Chorale has flourished under Gordon’s directorship, along with a very organised and supportive steering group and is now a highlyrespected musical body in the area which has given some very exciting performances of well-known choral works during it nine years’ existence.

It has also raised a considerable amount of money over the years for local charities. Gordon finds it quite interesting and hard to believe, that as a pensioner leaving the UK, where the opportunities to continue music-making were minimal, in Spain, a completely new world opened up and he cannot be thankful enough that, for a further 15 years, music in all its aspects has been ‘modus vivendi’ along with the immeasurable pleasure of associating with fine musicians from Spain and other parts of the world.

In handing over the Montgo Chorale baton in May of this year, after the first performance of his recently-revised Requiem Mass, one chapter closes while another opens. Gordon’s dream is to devote time to have some of his recently-composed chamber music performed. Here, he hopes to work with some very talented young Spanish instrumentalists.

Walkers’ well wishes for hospitalised leader The Javea U3A Walking Group is continuing to operate even though leader Clive White has suffered a stroke His wife and co-leader, Karen, says Clive is determined that the group should keep going and she will carry on organising walks until he is able to return.

The popular group regularly attracts around 40 members to its ‘Healthy Walking’ one-hour long sessions on Mondays and ‘Intermediate Walks’ two to three-hour long sessions on Thursdays – and participants, shocked to hear of Clive’s plight, have sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery and pledged to carry on while they wait to welcome him back.

Karen had the support of fellow members when she turned up to lead the latest walks and updated the group on Clive’s condition.

Clive is being treated in Denia Hospital and has been cheered by all the well wishes from his many friends within the U3A.The photo shows members of the group, together with Karen, enjoying the views from their elevated position above Les Fonts during a strenuous uphill walk last Thursday, May 4.

Oliva’s annual Song Festival to take place in June

by Tahnee Wright Oliva Councillor for Fiestas, Pepe Salazar recently presented the programme for the Oliva Song Fesitval 2017, accompanied by Festival Coordinator, Toni Rodriguez.

The Song Festival, year-on-year, is one of most anticipated events across the Oliva fair and festivals calendar.

The initial selection stage will take place on Saturday June 3 at the Centre Polivalent d’Activitats Socioculturals – ‘Last year, the selection took place in the Casa de la Festa, which was a little small, so this year the selection will take place in the Centre Polivalent d’Activitats and on the Saturday instead of the Friday, meaning even more people can attend,’ said Salazar.

Following the initial selection stage, this year’s final of the contest will take place between Friday June 16 and Sunday June 18 at the parc de l’Estacio and will also be broadcast live on the internet.

At the presentation, Toni Rodriguez thanked Pepe Salazar for his support and cooperation in organising the festival – ‘people are looking forward to the festival after having enjoyed themselves so much last year. We are ready for them and we hope that even more people participate in this year’s edition, meaning more people will come to support.’

Rodriguez and Salazar were accompanied at the presentation by President of the Association of Oil Traders (ACCO) Rosa Llopis, who said - ‘for us it will be a fantastic opportunity to promote local businesses in Oliva, especially because the Oliva Song Festival has a great social impact.’

Anyone aged 18 and over is invited to participate in the contest - both solo contestants and duets/ groups.

Smart phones, dumb people by

“One day,” I told my English literature teacher, “we’ll have enormous, wafer-thin 3D TVs, computers on our wrists, phones in our pockets, and …” here I paused for dramatic effect, “people will be having sex via their computers or with robots”.

That was back in the 1960s, and the classroom of 15-year-olds – after a moment of stunned silence – burst out laughing.“Duke,” bellowed Mr Matcher, “where in God’s name do you get your preposterous and frankly filthy ideas? “I shot back: “By reading science fiction, sir. And, mark my words, I really do believe that this will all happen in my lifetime.”

Am I happy that so much that was once pure fantasy is now a reality? By and large, yes. The Internet made it possible for me to take a lucrative editing contract with me when I moved from the UK to Spain, and today it allows me to promote humanism and gay rights by working with like-minded folk from around the world – people like Samuel, a Ugandan contact who alerted me a while back to the fact a British evangelist, Paul Shinners, had travelled to Uganda to support the introduction of the death penalty for homosexuality. After using my Freethinker website to expose Shinners, who runs Cornerstones, a bookshop/cafe in St Neots near Cambridge, the story went viral and dozens of protesters targeted his enterprise, which was forced to close for three days. Shinners flatly denied that he had gone to Africa to stoke up hatred. He threatened to sue me, but quickly backed down when I unearthed a video which showed him addressing a rally where he congratulated Uganda for drafting a vile “Kill the Gays” bill. The bill, by the way, was never passed, thanks to international condemnation, but Uganda remains an extremely hostile place for the LGBT community.

Sadly, there is a downside to the communications revolution. A week or so back, fellow contributor to RTN – Sammy Kruz, who works at one of my favourite gay bars, Sensations in the Old Town of Benidorm – posted this on Facebook: Customer: anywhere more lively to go? Me: well if you took ya nose out ya phone ... switched off Grindr and all the other apps, maybe you would notice that you are surrounded by nice, attractive, interesting people!!!

Sammy nailed it. Look around any bar or restaurant and you’ll find folk either staring glassy-eyed at large TV screens or at mobile phone displays.

What you’ll rarely encounter is stimulating talk because people are far too preoccupied with their phones.

As recently as last week I gave up trying to chat with

a guy because he thought his Samsung made far better company than I did. And he was fast approaching 80! So much for conviviality. In 1977, science fiction writer J G Ballard wrote a story entitled “The Intensive Care Unit” set in a world in which people no longer have any form of physical contact. Instead, they are obliged by law to live alone in their homes. Only via video links are they permitted to interact with others.

If we want to avoid ending up in the sort of de-socialised, dystopian future Ballard envisaged, we need to start using technology far less selfishly and begin reengaging with our fellow humans in the way we did before the invention of texting and the like. It’s known as conversation, folks. Start practicing it before your tongues atrophy and die.

Life was uncluttered in the 60s and 70s. But, when they said technology would make life even easier, we sheeple believe them. Is that so?

For twenty-years I kept appointments with businesses scattered around four British counties. Before leaving my home I used my dog-eared £4.95 A ~ Z atlas. The easy to understand book accurately got me from my home to any obscure address in towns many miles away.

Popular today, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based innovation used by drivers. Has GPS finally made Geographer’s A ~ Z Maps history?

I recall the Daily Mail carrying out a survey in which a dozen invited participants tested the two systems. Six of the contestants used their A ~ Z conventional maps to reach their objective; the other six used the GPS tracking system. The A ~ Z map users reached their destinations more quickly.

Be prepared for more surprises; the Geographer’s A ~ Z maps were introduced in the 1930s. Another revelation is that the originator of the flawless road map was Phyllis Pearsall MBE. Little did I realise that it was a woman who, for over 80 years, directed me and millions of other motorists safely and trouble free to whatever address we wanted. Another thing you may not know: Every map published by the Geographer’s A ~ Z map Company includes a non-existent ‘trap street’. This helps her team to tell at a glance if a bought copy is illegally copied. This ingenious innovation has since been hijacked by various publishers of reference works.

Geographer’s A ~ Z Map Company is the largest independent map publishing company in the UK. The Sevenoaks-based company publishes over 300 atlases. Recently, hundreds of tourists seeking one of Norway’s most visited attractions were misdirected by Google maps to an obscure hamlet situated 30km from the attraction. Roy Jarle Johansen of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration says road signs (and maps) aren’t the answer because people trust Google more.

Chatting with a haulier, whose business operates between the Costa del Sol and the UK, he told me he preferred the A ~ to Z maps to the GPS system.

When in 2012 the Olympic Games were held in London the A ~ Z Company was chosen to provide the detailed maps for the Olympic Parks in Stratford and other Olympic locations. As Henry Ford said, “If it isn’t broke why fix it?” Case closed, the rest of you can get lost.

I find the whole business of Health and Safety here in Spain puzzling, to say the least.

There can be no argument that if rules and regulations save people from injury or even worse as they go about their day to day business, then it is undoubtedly a good thing, particularly when I recall my days working in Bermuda.It was the early seventies and although the Bermuda Islands were modern and highly developed, they were lacking in basic health and safety practices compared to the UK. Particularly in the building trade.

My first major contract was the roofing of a new conference centre that was perched on top of a seven storey wing of a large hotel.

The new roof was pitched and the

only thing protecting me from instant raspberry jam on the patio far below, was a four by four inch triangular timber fillet that directed rainwater into down pipes, and into which I dug my heels. Oh boy, did I dig in those heels! There was no scaffolding whatsoever, with access to the roof provided via an internal stairwell. My only ‘safety’ feature was a harness connected to a rope which in turn was held by my Rastafarian colleague Albert, sitting up top sporting a colourful tea cosy hat and singing Rastafarian songs But I survived.

But getting back to my opening statement. What I find puzzling in Spain is the failure at times to rectify even the most blatant breaches of health and safety rules.

Broken drain covers left unattended for months on end; doors to electrical

inspection panels damaged or completely missing and left that way permanently; protruding paving slabs on pedestrian areas; ridges of hard concrete from uncleared spillage in roadways, the list is endless and nobody seems to be held accountable. And worse, nobody in authority seems to care.

And yet unnecessary cycle lanes are plonked in busy thoroughfares where there is clearly no heavy cycle traffic, and fines for such things as stowing your high visibility vest in the boot of the car instead of in the driver’s compartment. It would seem to be just another instance of an EU member, whilst praising to the rafters the benefits and advantages of membership of this authoritarian club, choosing to blatantly ignore any of its laws and directives that they find inconvenient or cannot be bothered to implement.

If you plan to dive in Croatia head to the island of Korcula, home to a well reviewed dive school. You’ll love the corals and plentiful fish (think wrasses, sea urchins and scorpion fish), along with a 2000 year old shipwreck. Croatia is becoming more touristy each year, so head there as soon as you can in order to enjoy the reefs in peace.

4. Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands – If you fancy a spot of cold water diving and you love shipwrecks the Scottish Orkney Islands are second to none. Here you’ll find 120 German ships sunk in 1919, seven large warships and four destroyers – unbelievable. You will need a dry suit and visibility is best in December and January.

5. Madeira – While Madeira may be an autonomous region of Portugal, its geographic location closer to Africa makes this a brilliant place for tropical diving. Often referred to as a ‘floating garden,’ this verdant jewel rises from the Atlantic like a rocky crag and is

an ideal place to soak up the sun and enjoy delicious food all afternoon after spending all morning diving. No diver should miss the 300 metre long Monastery Reef, lying just offshore of Canico. This stunning expanse is filled with corals, rays, moray eels and even frolicking dolphins.

Colour expressions Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

We are still on the subject of colours. We have covered the basic colour words which should be enough to satisfy those of us who are not interior designers or paint shop assistants. However, you don’t have to think for long to realize that colours are also the subject of a lot of expressions. In English we say things like “out of the blue” and “in the red” – occasionally we are in the red out of the blue, which is a bit upsetting. Colour words are also used in these figurative ways in Spanish, and although some of the obvious ones are the same, there are others that are, surprise surprise, completely different.

Let’s try some more obvious ones first – “lo veo todo negro” (I see everything as black, that is, I have a pessimistic view of life). “Se puso rojo como un tomate” (She or he went as red as a tomato). The word for white – blanco - can also be translated as “blank” which accounts for a sentence like this: “Cuando la profesora me hace una pregunta, me quedo en

blanco” (When the teacher asks me a question I go blank). This also happens when Spanish people speak to you in Spanish, unfortunately. Another use of “blanco” is “He pasado la noche en blanco” which means “I haven’t slept a wink all night”. Another way of saying that is: “No he pegado ojo en toda la noche” (loosely translated as “My eyes haven’t closed all night”).

Pink is a colour that is associated with glamour and celebrity as it is served up for us via gossip magazines. If you’d like to find out where the most popular bullfighters go on holiday with their model girlfriends, or what the interior of some film stars house looks like (as you can tell, I’m very interested) then you need to turn to the “prensa rosa” (the pink press). Actually, and seriously, they do make very good reading for students of Spanish as they are full of everyday words and expressions and have lots of pictures to help with the meaning!

The colour green is used in various expressions.

If someone says something horrible about someone else we say that they “turn them green” (poner verde). We would say, for example: “Cuando me equivoco, mi profesora me pone verde” (When I make a mistake my teacher has a real go at me). However, the expression is more often associated with talking behind people’s backs: “Como Juan no estuvo ese día, sus amigos le pusieron verde” (As Juan wasn’t there that day, his friends ripped him to shreds).

Verde is also used to mean immature or inexperienced (“estoy muy verde” – I’m new to this) but then at the other extreme “un viejo verde” describes a certain kind of old man, the sort we call a dirty old man - yes, the leering kind! And finally, in Spanish if you eat too much you turn purple. “La comida estaba tan rica que nos pusimos morados de tanto comer.” The food was so delicious we went purple eating so much!

Is there a way to invest sensibly and securely in Spain?

It concerns me when I see investment ‘opportunities’ here in Spain offering 7-8-9% fixed returns with no information on how these returns are achieved or where they are regulated, ‘low risk’ funds returning 20%+ a year, property investments offering unrealistic ‘guaranteed’ yields. Why project leaders with high status fail more often Projects led by high-status managers are more likely to fail than those with a middle-ranking status, according to research by Balazs Szatmariat of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM).

It was found that leaders gain mixed results because either everyone enthusiastically jumps aboard, or they fail, because people are less critical of these projects and turn a blind eye to their flaws.

In contrast, project leaders with a middle-ranking status typically produced the best results.

This stems from teams being reluctant to challenge highstatus managers on key issues because of their position in the organisation and thus permitting them to proceed with their project.

Meanwhile middle managers do not get unconditional support due

to their status and therefore they get the necessary critical feedback that they can use to perform better than their high-status counterparts.

The research studied the video games industry to find out how the status of a project leader might influence the quality of projects as this industry poses demanding project management skills.

Balazs Szatmari, a PhD student at RSM, said: ‘We were interested in whether having a high status as a project leader makes a project better and whether these leaders can gather support for high and low quality projects.’

Whenever there is a new idea, this has to be sold to top management and support has to be gathered throughout the whole organisation.

Project managers have to sell the idea and get people on board and this is where status can help to gather the necessary support to

implement the ideas. The research showed that status is very beneficial because it helps leaders to get the necessary support for their project and it speeds up the implementation

process. However, this status has a downside as it can allow senior managers to get away with bad ideas, less than ideal execution or framing their failures as success.

He added: ‘This is something organisations should be aware of when they assign the managers of projects or even when they evaluate past projects.’

Inflation begins to bite by

On Thursday the Bank of England (BOE) rate committee met to discuss interest rates and even though inflation is growing, yet again they have decided to leave the base rate at 0.25%, they feel this is the best option as they assess the extent of any consumer slowdown while waiting to see how EU Brexit divorce negotiations pan out. The BOE seems to be playing a wait and see game, with economic news being negative in the last few weeks. So it now seems like rates may stay at this level until at least 2019.

With Inflation rising in recent months, hitting its highest level in more three years at 2.3% in February, and remaining flat at 2.3% in March, this means in real terms with low wages growth and little to no growth on savings held in Banks and Building societies people are worse off month after month.

We all know interest rates offered to Savers have been low to zero in the UK and across Europe for years now, but that didn’t seems to

matter when inflation was at zero or negative, but now it is a worry as the effect of inflation means that the buying power of the cash you have is gradually decreasing Arguably, many savers with decent pots should invest some of their money over and above a rainy day (contingency) fund. Savers are missing out on the potential for better returns by not doing so, but they are also avoiding the chance of losing money if markets fall. But the savvy savers are realising that nowadays they have to accept some risk if they are going protect their money against growing inflation that will diminish the real value of their savings.

Zombie apocalypse in La Nucia Next month the town of La Nucia will be invaded by a bunch of zombies roaming the streets searching for survivors.

On ‘Zombie Night’, participants will take part in a series of tests, races and chases over six and a half hours, to see who wins the ultimate title.

The highly popular event, which takes place on Saturday June 17, from 23.00h has already been run in 35 towns and cities throughout the country, including neighbouring town Altea and attracts hundreds of participants.

Those who enter into ‘Zombie Night’, must choose to play either a ‘zombie’ or a ‘survivor’, thereafter they will tour the main streets of the town from 11.00am to 5.30am during these nocturnal hours, they must participate in an 'invasion' of various buildings and public spaces.

The players must survive all night on the streets of the town completing various tests, until being evacuated.

The first one to finish all the tests and remain as the’ last

Through the darkened night time streets of La Nucia, the zombies will roam in groups or alone, searching for survivors to infect with the ‘virus’.The town becomes a ‘reality’ set with scenes of races, chases, and searches for clues, where the adrenaline will run as fast as the 'virus' that participants must avoid getting infected with.

The object for the ‘survivors’ is to remain uninfected, however, once they are infected, they become a ‘zombie’ in search of theremaining survivors.There will be between 15 and 20 tests to overcome throughout the night and the goal of the game is for survivors not to be captured by the zombies and pass the tests . In addition, they must locate the vaccines that will help them to survive.‘Zombie Apocalypse’ is suitable for and open to all age groups

(between 10 and 99 years). Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18, at all times.

Whilst minors under 18 must carry an authorization document, signed by the parents with a photocopy of ID of the parent or guardian whose signature is on the document.

Tickets are priced at €20 for "survivor" and €10 for "zombies". Make-up for zombies will be supplied and applied by the organisers, Events Zombies LZD (included in the price of entry).

The English Choir of Teulada-Moraira celebrate Spring Moraira’s Parish Church played host to a special Spring concert last week, performed by The English Choir of TeuladaMoraira.

The ladies chorus proceeded down both aisles of the church, each member wearing a beautifully decorated hat and together singing a lively rendition of ‘In Your Easter Bonnet’, joining the gentlemen of the choir on the altar steps before the whole choir sang excerpts from ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ and ‘My Fair Lady’. The choir moved on to some more serious renditions of Verdi’s ‘Speed your Journey’ from Nabucco and Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ before it was back to the fun again as the gentlemen sang a cheeky ‘Standing on the Corner’ and the whole choir sang of the amusing ‘History of Western Music’, Joshua’s ‘Battle of Jericho’ and Karl Jenkins’ ‘Adiemus’ - which was accompanied by flute and drum solos.At the end of the concert, an encore

was demanded by the very enthusiastic audience. The choir rose to the occasion and sang one of their oldest and best loved favourites. The gentlemen started off singing ‘I Believe’ and the ladies merged in with them but singing ‘Ave Maria’, providing a breathtakingly beautiful and very fitting end to the concert.The funds raised from the concert will be donated to The Alzheimer’s Society and Moraira Church. Next month, The English Choir of Teulada-Moraira will be taking part in Moraira’s Moors and Christians Fiesta. The Make A Smile Self Sufficiency Project in Relleu will host an open day lunch on Sunday May 21.

Jason.P. Jason, just the intention to take on meditation is a positive step, and it does take time to be able to clear the mind and prepare to take your freedom in meditation journey.

Finding the right time of the day and the right place can make such a difference to your outcome. Never try to meditate if you are tired, and do not have a calendar that says you have to meditate when you may not want to. I imagine post it notes and if anything comes up to block my channels of peace I write what they are on my notes and stick them on a wall to be dealt with by my conscious mind at a more appropriate time!

If you want to know how to create a welcoming mood enhancer and an outdoor space that will benefit your own wellbeing, as well as wildlife and the environment follow these tips:

If you want a banana tree (or two) in your home, follow these tips: 1. When buying a banana tree, look at the pot size, the height of the plant and the number of plants per pot.

Its leaves are fragile so must be sleeved in order to prevent leaf damage and cold damage.

2. Also look out for diseases and pests: you'll find aphids and scale insects are the most common. Meanwhile, sticky clear honeydew is a sign that there are 'beasties' living on the plant. And if conditions are too dry, the plant could have red spider mite, too.

3. Banana trees like warm conditions - they cannot cope well with temperatures below 12-15°C. And give them plenty of daylight but avoid placing in direct sunlight.

4. Because it has a large leaf area, the plant evaporates quite a lot of moisture and will therefore need some extra water.

5. However, be careful when watering not to get the soil too wet because this can cause the root to rot, which ultimately disrupts the plant's growth.

6. The banana tree has a limited range but Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' and Musa 'Tropicana' are the most common varieties. The size of dwarf banana trees makes them suitable for living rooms.

7. Houseplant food once a fortnight will keep the banana tree strong and beautiful.

8. If it's thriving and getting too big, remove some of the lower stems so that it produces fresh side shoots.

Natural light tops the ‘must have’ poll for family homes The poll of 25–44 year olds also showed that a large garden is thought of as crucial for creating a good family environment.

The research from Origin asked 500 people what they see as fundamental features for comfortable family living.

Of those asked, more than a quarter (26.4 per cent) placed natural light as their top consideration, with just less than one in five (19.8 per cent) citing a large safe garden.Neil Ginger, CEO and founder of Origin, said: ‘Light in the home creates a feeling of space and freedom. These aspects are important when bringing up young children. As more and more people choose to renovate their homes rather than move, the decision to create areas where more light can enter the home is becoming ever more popular.’

Age played a significant part in how the votes were cast, with 29 per cent of the older respondents (35–44) placing natural light at the top, compared with 23.9 per cent of those aged 25 to 34.

The younger audience seemed split on what they found most important, with 22.4 per cent claiming garden size was the crucial factor. YouTube to rival Netflix?

Spending millions on new original shows you can watch for free YouTube is planning a new slate of ad-supported original programming to start this year, the company announced at the NewFronts conference in New York last week.

The shows - starting with ad-supported programming from Kevin Hart and Ellen DeGeneres will be free to view and not part of the company’s YouTube Red subscription service.

They are part of a broader push from the Google-owned video site to establish itself as a place for premium programming alongside Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.

In the process, YouTube hopes it will attract premium advertising as well, helping it shed a somewhat tarnished image after a parade of brands recently pulled advertising dollars out of Google as their ads appeared alongside hateful and terrorist content.

During her opening remarks tonight, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki apologised to the hundreds of marketers in the audience.

‘We apologise for letting some of you down,’ she said. ‘Thank you for helping us become a stronger and better platform.’

Hart’s show, ‘Kevin Hart: What the Fit?’ will be a workout-focused program distributed through his own YouTube channel, Laugh Out Loud Network. DeGeneres, on the other hand, will use her show to give fans backstage looks at the making of her talkshow.

Katy Perry and Demi Lovato also announced new behind-the-scenes shows with YouTube at NewFronts, while TV and radio personality Ryan Seacrest is confirmed to be producing a music competition, ‘Best.Cover.Ever’ to debut on the site later this year.

Beyond traditional celebrities, YouTube is leaning on its existing online talent with two shows, one from internet comedy dup Rhett & Link and another from high-speed camera effects specialists The Slow Mo Guys.

According to Bloomberg, YouTube will invest hundreds of millions of dollars over the next year to produce more than 40 new original shows and further build out its YouTube Red service.

Apple Watch sales doubled

Sales of the Apple Watch have nearly doubled year over year, CEO Tim Cook announced on the company’s earnings call last week.

So far, Apple has refused to give out exact sales numbers for the Apple Watch, as it does for its iPhone and iPad and has instead bundled the wearable device into its ‘other devices’ category with Beats products, AirPods, Apple TV and accessory sales.

Cook also noted that revenue in the last year

from Apple’s wearables — the Apple Watch, Beats headphones, and AirPods — was the size of a Fortune 500 company.

Given that the smallest Fortune 500 company pulled in $5.1 billion (€4.6 billion) in revenue last year, Apple has developed a very valuable wearable division.

Apple owns 40 per cent of the Bluetooth headphone market and 11 per cent of the total headphone market.

BMW electric car plans confirmed BMW has announced it will keep production of its all-electric, zero-emission iNext flagship in Germany.

The iNext, planned to be BMW’s first production car with Level 3 (‘eyes-off’) self-driving capability, will be built at BMW’s plant in Dingolfing, an hour north-east of Munich, starting in 2021.

BMW released a statement confirming that Dingolfing was chosen because it and the neighbouring Landshut engine plant are its core competence centres for electric motors and highvoltage batteries.

While Leipzig is BMW’s newest factory, hosting production of the i8 coupe

and both the range-extender and pure BEV versions of the i3, BMW have spent €137 million in the Dingolfing factory in recent years just to cope with the expertise and equipment needed to assemble high-voltage cars. The plant already builds the 5 Series and 7 Series and their plug-in hybrid variants.

The Leipzig plant built 340,000 cars last year, accounting for almost 15 per cent of BMW’s total production and will play a key role in BMW’s plans to lift sales of its electrified cars to 100,000 cars this year, up from 62,000 BEVs and hybrids in 2016.

Volkswagen posts profit surge

First quarter profit leaps 40 per cent

Volkswagen might have lost some sales in the first quarter of this year, but shareholders won’t be too concerned after it was announced last week that its operating profit has leapt 40 per cent.

The German brand spent €23 billion on the clean-up from its ‘Dieselgate’ scandal. However, now it’s clearly back to making money, with an operating profit of €4.37 billion, up from €3.13 billion in the first quarter of 2016.

Volkswagen said in a statement that it largely boosted its profit thanks to cost savings at its namesake brand, with the Volkswagen Group’s operating margin still on target to come in at between 6 and 7 per cent for the full year.

While its 2016 operating margin was 6.7 per cent, largely on the back of huge margins from Porsche and Audi, its first quarter operating profit jumped up to 7.8 per cent while the Group’s revenues climbed to €56.2 billion, up by 10.3 per cent.

‘Our efforts to improve efficiency and productivity across

all areas of the company are paying off,’ Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller said.

The Volkswagen brand saw its earnings climb €73 million to €869 million, while Bentley slowed its losses to only €30 million and Audi saw its profit slide from €1.3 billion to €1.2 billion.

On the plus side, Porsche remained strong (€832 million in profit) and both Skoda and Seat have been surging, with Seat’s profit jumping 56 per cent to €54 million after years of losses and Skoda’s profit climbing 32 per cent to €415 million.

Volkswagen has ambitious plans for its core brand, aiming to climb through a 4 per cent operating margin by 2020 and 6 per cent by 2025.

Porsche leads the Group in profitability, with an 18.5 per cent operating margin, followed by Skoda at 9.6 per cent, Audi at 8.7 per cent, Volkswagen with 4.6 per cent and Seat at 2.3 per cent.

Often, extreme heat results in humidity, or dampness in the air, during summer. Car owners must realise that heat and humidity are culprits to many car dilemmas. For example, elevated temperatures may cause overheating while humidity can fog up windows thus affecting visibility.

2. Protect your engine.

The engine is one of the most vulnerable parts of a car during summer. When overheating, the engine may stall or fail altogether. Oils and fluids keep the car running properly. Having them checked or replaced is an important preventive measure during summer. Look under the hood and check the engine oil. If the colour is darker than usual, it is time for oil change.

Also check on the brake, clutch, power steering, transmission and differential fluids. Top-up before going on long drives.

5. Don’t forget the battery.

Many drivers believe that car batteries suffer more in wintry weather.

This is a misconception.

A car battery is more likely to break down in the summer because it is

filled with fluids that evaporate from rising temperatures. Moreover, it may also overcharge or overheat.

Prolong battery life by charging it at the correct rate and by cleaning the dirt and grease that build up on top.

Golden weekend for Finestrat taekwondo club Members of the Finestrat Taekwondo Club achieved their best ever performance at the III Liga de la Comunitat Valenciana de poomsae, which took place at the Velodrome Luis Puig, last weekend.

The team brought back a fantastic haul of 8 gold medals, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals from the championships in Valencia.Individually, Maria Vidal won the title of Best overall Junior / Senior, out of almost 800 eligible competitors. The offer is aimed at children from 5 to 14 years old who can attend training on Mondays and Wednesdays, at 17:00 hours, in the municipal pavilion.

The cyclist of C.E.El Portell de Finestrat, José Tomás Sellés, finished in 5th position in the XIV March Novelt BTT. Despite not making a podium after suffering a muscle strain, Sellés retains the leader’s jersey for the IX Circuit BTT Mountains Alicante in it’s master Category.

Synchronised La Nucia girls in home medal haul Performing in front of their home crowd the synchronized swimming team from La Nucia won a total of five medals at the Valencia Open Championships, held in their home swimming pool in the town last weekend.

To cap a brilliant performance, they won medals in every category they competed in.

The team, consisting of Julia Ferrer, Sara Ausina, Raquel Tomás, Cristina Orozco, Elsa Molines, Marieta Devesa, Sofia Altura, Rebecca Baker, Albina Spain and Ana Ragno. All of them participated in 5 individual and team finals, climbing on to the podium in all their performances.

The 40 syncro participants came from 7 clubs: C.N. Atlantis Burjassot (Valencia), C.N. Azahar Sincro (Castellón), C.D. Alquimia de Torrent (Valencia), C. Waterpolo Morvedre (Valencia), Pool Swimming Club of La Nucía (Alicante), Halia Vila-Real (Castellón) and C.N. Sincro Costa Blanca (Alicante)

Altea win the spoils in local derby against La Nucia

A tight 1-0 victory away for Altea, at the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano, home ground of near neighbours La Nucia last weekend, means both sides head into the last two matches of the season with everything to play for.

The 63rd minute goal from Roberto Navarro, sealed the win that leaves Altea CD’s fate in their own hands, with the next game ahead being another local derby against Deportivo Callosa, lying three points ahead of them in the relegation battle.At the other end of the table, la Nucia are still in the hunt for top position in the Group IV Regional Preferente Division.After losing at home to the white shirts of Altea, La Nucia now lie two points behind leaders Villayosa, and four points ahead of Thader le Rojales with two matches still to play.

sport Great Britain shock Australia to win Shah Cup

England hammer Ireland in one day rout The greatest moment in Ireland's cricket history came at the expense of England in the group stages at the 2011 World Cup, when Kevin O'Brien's heroics helped them knock off 327 with five balls to spare.

However, the cricket boot was on the other foot, at a windy Bristol last week, when a rejuevenated England, under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, began their Champions Trophy preparations with an emphatic seven-wicket one-day win in their first home international match against the Irish.

The tourists fell apart after a good start, losing their last eight wickets for 45 as Adil Rashid's 5-27 helped dismiss them for 126.

England's reply began badly as Jason Roy was caught without scoring. But a typically brutal 55 from Alex Hales and an unbeaten 49 from Joe Root saw England home with 30 overs left.

Most of the praise for Eoin Morgan's side has focused on their brutal scoring, but it was their ruthlessness with the ball that brought them victory here.

On a benign track at a windy Bristol, it initially appeared to have been a good toss for Ireland to win, as the aggressive Paul Stirling and efficient Ed Joyce added a quick-fire 40 for the opening wicket.

But England, without Indian Premier League trio, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler, halted their progress with the dismissal of both

openers in quick succession. Mark Wood, playing his first ODI since September after ankle surgery, bowled Stirling before David Willey trapped Joyce lbw.

From that platform, the home side spun the game decisively in their favour, with Rashid the star turn.

That was his first five-for in ODIs and the second-best figures by an English spinner in the format, behind only the 5-20 taken by Vic Marks against New Zealand in Wellington in 1984.Off the pitch, Irish cricket has improved significantly in the past six years - as they continue their pursuit of Test status - but on the pitch they remain reliant on the players who helped them achieve that victory in Bangalore.

Seven of the team that played in that memorable win against England- including the same top six - also featured at Bristol, serving as a reminder of how far they have to go before they can graduate from an associate nation.

But they were ultimately outclassed by an England side who are a very different animal to two years ago, let alone six.

Dylan Wotherspoon hit a late third but Britain held on for victory to record a British win for only the second time since the competition began back in 1981.

Head coach Bobby Crutchley said: "We are thrilled, we put in consistent performances throughout the tournament and today was a great team effort, we were rewarded for sticking to the game-plan."

England and Scotland take part in the Hockey World League in London from 15-25 June. The event serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cup in India.

Magpies return to Premier League as champions Brighton and Hove Albion, despite being the first team from the English Championship to confirm their place in next season’s Premier League, had to settle for a runners up spot after Newcastle United leapt above them to clinch the league title in dramatic fashion.

Newcastle clinched the Championship title with victory over Barnsley, after Brighton conceded a late equaliser at Aston Villa. Ayoze Perez, Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle scored in a comfortable victory, but it was Jack Grealish's 89th-minute goal which sealed the Magpies' title.

Perez's flicked finish made it 1-0, before Mbemba smashed in to double the lead from a Perez rebound.

Gayle added a late third before Grealish's goal handed them the title.

It was a comfortable win for Rafael Benitez's side - yet it looked like it would not be enough to seal top spot, after Glenn Murray's penalty had put league leaders Brighton in front at Villa Park.

However, despite being down to 10 men following Nathan Baker's red card, Grealish beat Brighton keeper David

Stockdale to send the Magpies above Brighton in the table.At St James' Park, DeAndre Yedlin terrorised Barnsley down the right-hand side and it was his cross which Perez guided into the bottom corner to open the scoring.

Christian Atsu forced Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies into two strong diving saves with powerful shots and Massadio Haidara smashed a good chance over the crossbar from Perez's cut-back as the hosts dominated.

Davies kept out Jack Colback with his legs, but the Magpies got a deserved second when Davies pushed Perez's shot out perfectly for Mbemba to smash home his first goal for the club.

Jonjo Shelvey struck the post before Aleksandar Mitrovic's header sent substitute Gayle through to complete the scoring with a confident finish past the onrushing Davies.

Under manager Benitez, Newcastle brought 12 players to the club after dropping into the Championship last summer, with Matt Ritchie and Gayle moving down a division to sign five-year deals.More than ÂŁ50 million was spent in transfer fees alone, but these were

offset by the sales of Andros Townsend, Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum among others.

Nevertheless, the Magpies were still under pressure to achieve promotion - a feat they managed with two games to spare.Benitez's side have battled with Brighton throughout the season for top

spot, but since the Seagulls achieved promotion on 17 April they have dropped off the pace dramatically.

Ultimately it was three straight wins for Newcastle and three matches without three points for Chris Hughton's side that told, giving the Toon the perfect end to the campaign.
