by Tahnee Wright & Andy Mansell The snap UK General Election, called this week by Prime Minister Theresa May, took the majority of the British public by complete surprise, coming so closely after last year's Brexit referendum.

May claims it is the only way to guarantee political stability for years ahead as Britain negotiates its way out of the European Union.

‘I have just chaired a meeting of the cabinet where we agreed that the government should call a General Election to be held on the 8th of June,’ May said in a surprise statement outside her Downing Street office.

‘It was with reluctance that I decided the coun-

try needs this election, but it is with strong conviction that I say it is necessary to secure the strong and stable leadership the country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond.’

Under current legislation, the next election was not scheduled to take place until 2020.

May's Conservatives, who were split on the issue of European Union membership ahead of last year's referendum, are currently far ahead of Labour, the main opposition party, according to opinion polls.

For many ex-patriate UK citizens living in Spain, the early election has come as a severe blow to their hopes of being able to cast their votes in future elections.

Current legislation does not permit anyone living outside of the UK for over 15 years the right to vote in elections and referendums in the country.

The last Conservative manifesto, which brought them to power in 2015, promised to redress this issue, by bringing a 'Votes For Life' bill through Parliament before the next election, which was scheduled for 2020.

However, Sir Roger Gale, one of the MP's behind the bill has confirmed by e-mail to supporters awaiting news of its progress, that the 'Votes For Life' bill will not be pushed through in time for the people who've lived in Spain over 15 years to vote in the General Election this coming June.

Murcia police on a speeding crusade Drivers in the Vega Baja region are warned to be particularly observant of their speed and general road use over the next few days.

Extra Guardia Civil traffic controls this weekend expect to monitor over 24,000 vehicles for speeding on the regions roads

by Andy Mansell Guardia Civil traffic police throughout Murcia, last week began a campaign against speeding on the regions roads, by introducing extra unmarked cars.

The initiative, began on Easter Monday and will continue through this coming weekend, before the expected conclusion on Tuesday April 23.

The four extra vehicles will be equipped with a video camera, plus three auto-zoom lens cameras. These controls will be an additional support to the regular patrols carried out by Local Police who are also participating fully during the campaign.

Through the week of patrols, the officers expect to monitor the speed of around 24,000 vehicles on the highways and urban roads of the municipalities of AbarĂĄn, Ă guilas, Cartagena, Murcia and San Pedro del Pinatar.

The Murcian Traffic Police issued a statement confirming the campaign, adding that vehicles driving at excess speed was one of the most frequent causes of accidents on Spanish roads. Adding that a quarter of all deaths in road traffic accidents could have been avoided, had cars been travelling with-

in the speed limit.

Twenty percent of all deaths on the roads of the region could be attributed to a speed related crime as it is virtually impossible for pedestrians to survive if hit by a car travelling above 80km per hour.

The campaign is not only directed towards speeding motorists, but also to those who do not observe the laws on overtaking, keeping adequate distance between vehicles and crossing continous white lines on highways.

Breaking of these road rules is a civil offence classified as either a serious or very serious infringement. Any motorists caught violating the law will receive a fine between 100 euros and 600 euros depending on the severity of the offence.

In addition, the offending motorist can expect the loss of between 2 and 6 points for this type of violation, depending on the excess speed committed.

Since the start of the National initiative, which is part of a wider inter European campaign, conducted simultaneously by 25 countries via the International Organization of Traffic Police (TISPOL), 40% of all fines have been for various speeding and dangerous driving offences.

In the email distributed to people on his mailing list on Wednesday April 19, he said: ‘The commitment, made in good faith, was to have the legislation and supporting franchise infrastructure approved by the Electoral Commission on the statute book in time for a 2020 General Election and my understanding from Chris Skidmore in the Cabinet Office is that that process was on track at the time that the Prime Minister announced her intention to seek an election on June 8’ He goes on to explain why the contentious nature of the bill makes it impossible to push through quickly: ‘It gives me no pleasure to have to say that there is no prospect of this process being expedited, as some have sought to suggest, by the time that Parliament is dissolved on May 2/3. Only agreed and non-contentious measures will be allowed to pass through both Houses of Parliament – and a 'Votes for Life' bill will have to go through both Houses - before the House is prorogued. All other (contentious) measures will have to be carried over or re-introduced in the next parliament.’

As a small crumb of comfort to disappointed ex-patriates in Spain, Sir Roger ends the email by saying: ‘I am sorry to have to offer blunt and disappointing news but can only say that I, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and others who support the 'Votes for Life' cause, will seek to ensure that this is con-

tained within our Party`s manifesto and introduced as early as possible in the next parliament.’

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron released a statement – ‘This election is your chance to change the direction of our country. If you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit. If you want to keep Britain in the single market. If you want a Britain that is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance. Only the Liberal Democrats can prevent a Conservative majority.’

As did Green party co-leader Caroline Lucas – ‘Britain is at a crossroads – and today’s announcement means that people are rightly given a say over the direction this country is going to take. Only the Green party offers a bold, positive vision for a different kind of Britain. At this election, we will stand for an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few; a Britain that’s open to the world and the protection of our precious envi-ronment. We will stand up to the politics of hatred and division that is scarring our communities and give people across the country a chance to vote for a better Britain.’

Along with Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour party – ‘I welcome the prime minister’s decision to give the Brit-ish people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first.

Labour will be offering the country an effective alterna-

tive to a government that has failed to rebuild the economy, delivered falling living standards and damaging cuts to our schools and NHS. In the last couple of weeks, Labour has set out policies that offer a clear and credible choice for the country. We look forward to showing how Labour will stand up for the people of Britain.’

The pound strengthened by almost half a cent against the dollar as May spoke, reflecting investor relief that earlier rumours of a shock resignation did not transpire.

Jet2 aircraft in scare at Alicante airport A Jet2 plane carrying 238 passengers and crew from Leeds-Bradford airport was involved in a minor scare on landing at Alicante-Elche Airport last week. The Ministerio de Fomento, ministry of public works, has opened an enquiry on the incident which happened at 10.38am on the morning of Monday April 10. The aircraft, a Boeing B757-200, operated by Jet2.com, bounced whilst landing on Runway 10 at Alicante Airport, prompting the captain to take control of the plane.

However, on bounce recovery, the tail of the plane hit the runway surface, causing the plane to roll, but continue to land succesfully. The incident was not considered to be major and although the disembarking passengers appeared shaken by the experience, there were no reported injuries to either holidaymakers or crew.

The flight from Yorkshire had proceeded routinely without incident and after a close inspection of the damaged tail, the return flight to Leeds-Bradford Airport departed normally.

Spain's Civil Aviation Authority (CIAAIC) have also opened an investigation on the incident and reported substantial damage to the aircraft's tail.

Aviation sources were careful to point out that although incidents of this type are considered rare, they do happen on occasions and can generally be attributed to slight miscalculation on the part of the pilot.

‘I quit’ – George Osborne George Osborne announced on Wednesday that he is quitting as an MP but will carry on ‘fighting for that Britain I love’ as editor of London’s daily newspaper – the Evening Standard.

In a letter revealing his decision to Conservatives in his Tatton constituency, he said he was thrilled to be taking charge of ‘a great newspaper.’

The former Chancellor, 45, made plain that he intends to stay active in political debates on issues he is passionate about. And he hinted he could make a political comeback in future, saying he was leaving Westminster ‘for now.’

He wrote: ‘I am stepping down from the House of Commons - for now. But I will remain active in the debate about our country’s future and on the issues I care about, like the success of the Northern Powerhouse.’

‘I want a Britain that is free, open, diverse and works with other nations to defend our democratic values in the world. ‘ ‘I will go on fighting for that Britain I love from the editor’s chair of a great newspaper. It’s still too early to be writing my memoirs.’

Explaining his decision to step down, he said: ‘At the age of 45, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life just being an ex-Chancellor. I want new challenges. ‘ ‘I’m very excited about the opportunity to edit the Evening Standard. I’ve met the team there and their energy and commitment to this great newspaper are positively infectious.’

He promised his editorship would give the public ‘straight facts and informed opinion to help them to make the big decisions Britain now faces about the kind of country we want to be. That starts with the coverage of this general election.’

Mr Osborne has been an MP for 16 years and was the youngest Tory MP of his generation in 2001.

He was already well known as a backroom Conservative who headed the political section of Conservative Research Department and later worked for John Major at No 10 and for William Hague.

Promotion at Westminster was swift, rising to become shadow chancellor and David Cameron’s closest political adviser in opposition.

He was regarded as one of the most influential Chancellors of recent years as a member of the Coalition ‘Quad’ and later in Mr Cameron’s majority Conservative Government - regularly tipped as a future Premier until the Brexit referendum derailed his rise.

Hashish gang caught red handed in La Manga A painstaking undercover operation over recent months came to fruition last week, when officers from the Guardia Civil Narcotics squad seized an estimated ton of hashish from a gang operating from a house in La Manga on the Mar Menor.

Acting on a tip off, the officers raided the chalet on the El Vivero Urbanizacion last Thursday with an order from the court in Cartagena and caught nine alleged drug traffickers in possession of the drugs.

The organised crime and narcotics squad had been monitoring the gangs activities for over a year, tracking their movements from Morocco to Andalucia, to Almeria and onto La Manga.

The officers detected a landing of drugs on a beach along the Mar Menor, then following a discreet line of enquiry tracked the alleged traffickers to a house in a quiet area of the urbanizacion, which the men had rented for a month, just a few days before.

A police source told the Spanish press that, on entering the property with the warrant, the officers immediately came across two boats in the garden. One of the boats, a rubber inflatable, had a false bottom which contained the huge haul of cannabis.

On discovering the drugs in the false bottom one of the officers was heard to shout in excitement ''Bingo, chocolate!!''

Neighbours confirmed they had heard the alleged traffickers celebrating loudly earlier in the evening, presumably because they thought they had landed the drugs successfully without detection.

The eight men of Moroccan and Spanish origin were handcuffed and arrested on drug trafficking offences.

They were subsequently brought before a judge on Saturday and remanded in custody whilst the investigation continues.

Eight of the suspects refused to testify, however one man of Moroccan origin said he was on holiday and confirmed he arrived in Spain at Almeria with four of the other arrested men in a car which the police had also impounded.

The judge must now decide the procedural situation regarding the arrested suspects. Meanwhile the investigation stays open whilst police attempt to determine the source of the narcotics in Morocco and the presumed distribution network in Spain.

British woman stabbed to death on Jerusalem train

by Staff Reporter A Palestinian man stabbed to death a British student on Jerusalem's transit network on Friday.

The incident occurred in a train carriage on the light rail network near the walled Old City. TV footage showed blood on the floor of the carriage with police officers restraining a man and carrying him away.

A paramedic for the Magen David Adom ambulance service said the woman had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead in hospital.

Israel's ambassador to Britain, Mark Regev, named the victim as Hannah Bladon on his Twitter account, adding that she was ‘murdered in a senseless act of terror.’

The British Foreign Office in London said in a statement: ‘We can confirm the tragic death of a British national in Jerusalem. We are providing support for her family at this difficult time and are in touch with the local authorities.’

Israeli media said Bladon was a 21-yearold exchange student studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Israeli police earlier said she was 25. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent condolences in a statement issued by his office.

The Shin Bet domestic security service identified the assailant as 57-year-old Jamil Tamimi and said he was a Palestinian from Arab East Jerusalem with mental health problems who was convicted in 2011 for sexually assaulting his daughter.

A Shin Bet statement added that the assailant had previously tried to commit suicide by attempting to swallow a razor blade.

The attack occurred as Christians marked Good Friday and Muslims held prayers at respective holy sites nearby.

A wave of street attacks by Palestinians in Israel, Jerusalem and the Israeli-occupied West Bank since October 2015 has previously killed 37 Israelis and two American tourists. At least 242 Palestinians have died during the period of sporadic violence.

Israel says at least 162 of the Palestinians killed had launched stabbing, shooting or car ramming attacks. Others died during clashes and protests.

Israel has accused the Palestinian leadership of inciting the violence. The Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank, denies incitement and charges that in many cases, Israel has used excessive force in thwarting attackers armed with rudimentary weapons.

EU's food safety watchdog says pesticide residues remain low Food consumed in the European Union is largely free of pesticide residues or contains levels within legal limits, posing little or no risk to consumers, the region's food safety watchdog said in a recent report.

In its annual monitoring report on pesticides in food, the European Food Safety Authority found 97 per cent of food samples collected in 2015 were within legal limits and just over 53 per cent were free of quantifiable residues.

Foods tested included aubergines, bananas, broccoli, virgin olive oil, orange juice, peas, sweet peppers, table grapes, wheat, butter and eggs, EFSA said. A total of 84,341 samples were tested for residues of 774 pesticides.

For products from countries within the EU and the European Economic Area, legal limits were exceeded in 1.7 per cent of samples, an increase of 0.1 per cent from the previous year.

For organic foods, 99.3 per cent were residue-free or within legal limits.

Immigrants boat catches fire off Cartagena

By Andy Mansell Eleven refugees from Algeria trying to enter Spain illegally were rescued by a maritime rescue boat off the coast of Cartagena last Saturday.

In total five boats, carrying nearly 200 immigrants were intercepted along the Spanish coast in one day, over the Easter weekend.

Red Cross and Health workers from the Murcian government treated six of the Algerian immigrants brought ashore in Cartagena for burn injuries received when the vessel carrying them caught fire out at sea.The fire was caused by diesel coming into contact with sea water and one of the casualties was admitted to hospital for a chemical burn to his leg.

Three of the rescued Algerians were minors, one of whom also suffered burns.One other, a diabetic was also taken to hospital to receive medical treatment for controlling their condition, when the rescue vessel the 'Salvamar Mimosa' brought them ashore around 6.30am on Easter Saturday.

This incident brought the total of refugees trying to enter the country to 41 on the Murcian coastline in four days, since the previous Wednesday.

Eleven of the rescued immigrants were classed as minors.

Elsewhere on Saturday, the Spanish coast guard was called in to save a total of 188 migrants who attempted to illegally cross the western Mediterranean from North Africa into Spain on four boats.

One of these boats was carrying 41 migrants, including five women and a baby, when it sent a mayday to the Spanish coast guard in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain's state TV station reported.

The immigrants, from Sub-Saharan Africa, were moved to the southern city of Cadiz, according to the report.

A second carrying 33 people, including three women, went astray and its engine malfunctioned nearly 75 nautical miles to the south of Almeria city.

A fishing boat in the vicinity sent a radio signal to the Spanish navy on the incident and the navy responded promptly.

Another boat with 52 migrants on board faced trouble some 36 nautical miles from Motril town in the province of Granada.

The migrants, all from Sub-Saharan Africa, were safely rescued.

Earlier in the day, 62 migrants were saved one mile from Barbate town, Cadiz province.

Couple fined for squatting A couple who illegally occupied a dwelling in the small Murcian village of Cabezo de Torres, were evicted and received a fine after appearing before a magistrate in a local court.

The two squatters, who had been living in the property with a group of relatives pleaded that they had no choice but to move in as the weather was cold and they had nowhere else to go.

After listening to the evidence of the case, the judge dismissed their plea and fined the pair a total of 180 euros, 90 euros per person.

World champion saves drowning woman Triple World Champion canoeist and National Police Officer, Oscar Grana from Pontevedra, became a local hero, by saving a drowning woman's life last week whilst on a training session on his favourite stretch of river.

by Andy Mansell The athlete was off duty, canoeing on a rough stretch of the River Lerez, in challenging conditions, near to the bridge of Monte Porreiro, when he spotted a body in the rapids, face down, about to sink below the water line.

He jumped out of his canoe, grabbed the body with one arm and swam ashore with his free arm, eventually pulling the person onto the river bank.

Once ashore, he became aware that the person, a woman he assumed to be around 65 years of age, was hardly breathing and appeared to be slipping into a state of unconsciousness.

He immediately instigated resuscitation procedures which quickly brought the woman back to consciousness. Police and rescue services who had already been alerted arrived soon after to transfer the victim to hospital in pontevedra, where she received treatment and remained in a stable condition.

A police spokesman, speaking to the Spanish press, praised the timely intervention of the canoeist, who he confirmed had undoubtedly saved the life of the woman.

He also told reporters, the local police had received a phone call from her worried family earlier that morning, saying she had gone missing.

For his own part Grana, told reporters, he does not consider himself a hero, as anyone would have done the same under similar circumstances. ''Everyone's natural instinct is to help others '' he said '' "I saw that there was someone splashing and at first I did not

give it any importance, but when I approached I saw that it was the body of a person and it was sinking to the bottom of the river," he explained.

He said, the rescue was complicated because the woman was wearing heavy clothes which were dragging her under the water.

Once ashore, the body "did not respond and was practically unconscious, so I put her on the side and started to expel a lot of water through the mouth", after which the woman "began to catch for air and her eyes opened."

Police also revealed this was not the first time the champion canoeist had saved a peron's life. In 2015, in almost identical circumstances Grana saved the life of a woman who had got into difficulties on the same stretch of river.

Man rescued from burning house Firemen from Murcia performed a dramatic dawn rescue earlier this week when a fire broke out at a house in Mula.

The fire officers and Guardia Civil officials responding to a phone call to emergency services 112, arrived at the property to find a man trapped inside the burning house after the rest of the occupants had escaped.

The 64 yesr old man had been unable to leave with the others because the flames, smoke and fumes had become too dangerous. The Bomberos entered the property, located the trapped man and delivered him to safety, whilst also dousing the fire which began with a burning armchair.

The casualty was transferred to hospital in Murcia, where he received treatment for smoke inhalation.

Ghost airport of Murcia may fly at last

By Andy Mansell Ten years after work began on the region’s new International Airport, Corvera, the ‘ghost’ airport of Murcia may be ready to receive its first plane. The Regional Government has begun the process to finally bring Corvera Airport into operation, almost 5 years after the works were completed with an investment of around 270 million euros.

Once again they will put the management contract for this ‘ghost’ travel hub out to tender, despite the fact they are embroiled in a long-running legal battle with the first company to win the concession back in 2007.

The new phase of this cripplingly expensive aviation saga began on March 25 with the bidders’ conditions released in the Official Journal of the European Union.Interested companies have until May 2 to register. After that date, those who can provide proof of financial buoyancy and experience will have two months to provide detailed technical and economic plans.

The concept of a second airport in Murcia was originally conceived in July 2001 by the Socie-

dad Aeropuertos de Murcia.

After receiving an initial investment of €270 million building work began in 2007 and is virtually complete.But the facility was never inaugarated and never opened to the public. In December 2015, the regional government was forced to cancel the contract with concessionaire Sacyr from Madrid on the grounds that the company granted the concession had exceeded its allotted time period.The subsequent legal battle between Sacyr and Murcia’s authorities has become increasingly complex and is now headed for the High Court.Corvera is the first regional airport to be put out to tender since the frenzy to open small airports across Spain began sapping resources and leading, in the case of Castellón and Ciudad Real, to years of disuse. Ciudad Real was last year sold to a Chinese consortium for 10,000 euros. In the case in Huesca, Lérida, Salamanca, León, La Rioja, Burgos and Albacete, the crippling losses have been absorbed by the airport networks.

When it opens, Corvera will replace the region’s San Javier airport, but that in itself creates further

problems. The Ministry of Development has invested 70 million euros recently on San Javier Airport. AENA, the management company who run the majority of Spanish airports, have built a new terminal, control and another runway on the property they share with the Ministry of Defence. According to estimates from Murcia’s Department of Development and Infrastructure, Corvera

will be able to welcome 800,000 foreign tourists in the first four years, pushing total passenger traffic up to 3.5 million a year, a figure which could, in time, rise to 5 million. It will also create 20,000 jobs and raise regional GDP by 3.5 percentage points.

These passenger figures would mean revenue of €495.8 million (€600 million including sales tax) in the first 25 years. A complementary activities

zone totaling 600,000 square meters is also on the cards, with profits from it remaining in private hands.

The successful bidder will be able to establish fees and negotiate with airline operators – a freedom which should improve competitiveness in the Alicante, Murcia and Almería regions and allow for more efficient management, according to the authorities.

Prince Harry opens up about mental health struggles

by Tahnee Wright Prince Harry sought counselling in his late twenties to help deal with the grief of losing his mother more than a decade earlier, he told the Telegraph newspaper.

Harry, whose mother Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 when he was just 12, said he had come ‘very close to a complete breakdown’ on several occasions after shutting down his emotions, impacting both his work and his personal life.

‘My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum, because why would that help? It's only going to make you sad, it's not going to bring her back,’ he said in an interview published on Monday.

‘So, from an emotional side, I was like right, don't ever let your emotions be part of anything’.

He said his older brother Prince William had encouraged him to seek help and he had been to see ‘a shrink’ several times. He also took up boxing to help deal with aggression after feeling he was ‘on the verge of punching someone’.

‘I started to have a few conversations and actually all of a sudden, all of this grief that

I have never processed started to come to the forefront and I was like, there is actually a lot of stuff here that I need to deal with,’ he said, adding that he had experienced two years of ‘total chaos’.

The princes' mother Diana was married to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles between 1981 and 1996, when the couple divorced. She was killed when the car she was in crashed while being chased by paparazzi on motorbikes.

Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, described at times facing anxiety during royal engagements but said he was now in a ‘good place’.

He served in the British Army for 10 years, including two stints in Afghanistan and now works with several charities including supporting wounded soldiers. Along with William and William's wife Catherine, he also set up a mental health charity.

‘Because of the process I have been through over the past two and a half years, I’ve now been able to take my work seriously, been able to take my private life seriously as well and been able to put blood, sweat and tears into the things that really make a difference and things that I think will make a difference to everybody else,’ he said.

Seagull rescued by passers-by Concerned passers-by saved a disorientated seagull from fatal injury on a busy Alicante City street earlier this week. The bird was in difficulties, unable to fly, wandering amongst traffic on Pleno Alfonso el Sabio on Tuesday morning.

A number of people realising the injured bird's plight, dodged the traffic to pick the seagull up and prevent further injury or death. Fortunately, as it was a fiesta day in the city, the traffic was light and the rescue proved successful.

The bird was eventually picked up by local police who delivered to a special sanctuary for injured birds in Santa Faz.

Homes for the over 60's empty Over fifty homes adapted for people over the age of sixty are empty and ready for occupation in the Alicante region.

by Andy Mansell The 52 apartments are situated in specially prepared sites throughout the municipality and are designed for residents on low incomes who meet the qualifying criteria.

Potential occupants should be above the age of 60 and be either receiving a pension or on a combined income of under 22,932 euros.

The dwellings are in residential centres owned by the Valencian Government Housing Authority, who are responsible for nearly 400 such properties, which have rents between 105 euros and 196 euros per month depending on location.

Maria Jose Salvador, the government housing minister explained that at present only 77% of the homes are occupied, leaving 22% unoccupied, of which, the majority are within the Alicante area.

The apartments are normally around 40 square metres, with lounge, dining area, bathroom and one bedroom and are suitable for up to two people.

They are designed for independent living, but are part of complexes with communal social areas for integration with neighbours and help to prevent the marginalization experienced by people as they get older.

Some of them, for instance in La Nucia, are in sheltered accommodation with 24 hour support and care staff on duty.

Thirty three of the properties are in the Pilar de Horadada district, in two properties close to each other. They share a complex with a home for younger people and a central building designed for communal use by residents. The remainder of the homes are distributed between San Vicente de Raspeig, where the rooms are adjacent to a cardiovascular department and have specialised care facilities, Benidorm and the aforementioned sheltered housing apartments in La Nucia.

Spanish hospital offers nipple tattoos to breast cancer survivors Arms covered in red and green ink, tattoo artist Alvaro Quesada is hardly what cancer survivors expect at a Madrid infirmary, the first public hospital in Spain to offer nipple and areola tattooing.

Yet his service of tattooing realistic-looking nipples onto women who have had their breasts reconstructed after mastectomies signals the final step of recovery from cancer - and women react with emotion to the process. ‘They leave crying and hugging me. This is therapy,’ said 32-year-old Quesada, who takes time out from his tattoo shop to attend patients at the hospital.

Reconstruction can occur months, or even years, after breast cancer surgery with tissue expanders typically installed to stretch the skin and make room for a future implant. Creating the nipple comes later and involves one more operation.

Clutching a pale pink tattoo gun, Quesada creates the three-dimensional illusion of a nipple on a patient's reconstructed breast, mixing colours to mimic the natural shade of an areola.

Half-blind, Quesada offers his service free of charge. The national health service did not cover the cost of his false eye after he lost his left eye to a benign tumour.

For many, a quick and relatively painless session marks the end of a chapter.

TV star headlines at Cartagena DJ festival

EL Hormiguero TV Star Carlos Jean headlines next months's DJ Festival In Cartagena

By Andy Mansell Carlos Jean, DJ and star of the Spanish TV show El Hormiguero will headline next month’s Weekend DJ Festival in Cartagena.

The six time Grammy nominee and versatile DJ, also part of the duo NawraJean with actress and vocalist Nawja Nimri, will close the event on Saturday May 27, with his refreshingly sophisticated fusion of soul sounds, latin downloads and acid jazz drops.

Organiser's are still finalising the full festival line up, but in a change to previous year's they have added an extra day to allow more acts to take part.

The event, now in it's third year will run from 8.00pm on Friday 26 May and 5.00pm on Saturday May 27 at the Stadium Cartagonova in the city and run through until around 4.00am on the following morning.

Acts confirmed for the Friday night are The 'dream team' that created the 'max mix' remastering of disco hits for Spanish radio during the 1980's and by contrast to purely electronic music, Ayoho from Cartagena.

Other acts performing on Saturday are Taoo Kross, who has mixed for both David Guetta and Steve Aoki and Albert Neve, who will arrive direct from the Ultra Music Festival in Miami.Shake Coconut, Brain Breakers and local DJ's Plosly and Javi Ponce complete the list of confirmed performers.

There will also be a DJ competition over the weekend plus bars and food trucks and the Hormiga Hippy Market.

Although the final line up is yet to be announced, organisers have released tickets with discounted prices starting at 5 euros.

Cleaners to the rescue

Cleaning services, working overnight, collected 87,000kg of rubbish from the streets of Murcia City following the Bando de La Huerta Easter fiesta and parade earlier this week.

The popular parade tours the streets of the city and this year more than 600,000 people flooded into the centre to watch and take part in the fiesta.

The amount of rubbish collected was nine tons more than for the same festival last year, but the four extra street cleaning vehicles on duty working from midnight to 6am, managed to return the affected streets to normal by sunrise the following day.

Samaritans in La Zenia Boulevard Representatives from the Samaritans in Spain charity recently spent the day at La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre outside Torrevieja.

by Andy Mansell The volunteers had a stand in the centre and spent the day chatting informally with shoppers about the service and support they are able to offer vulnerable individuals throughout the country.

They were particularly keen to raise further awareness of the Samaritans 24 hour listening service, which is available on a freephone number 900 525 100 throughout Spain.

The volunteers are returning to La Zenia Boulevard on Wednesday May 31and will be drawing attention to their mission, which focuses on offering empathy and compassion to everyone, as explained by Migel Jayasinghe: “Empathy is a word often used to define a trait that the Samaritans Volunteer Listeners are required demonstrate in their day to day work.

It is defined (by the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary) as ‘... the power of mentally identifying oneself with (and so fully comprehending) a person or object of contemplation.’

Empathy is contrasted with the word ‘sympathy’, defined (op. cit.) as ‘... a favourable attitude with feel-

ings of pity and sorrow for the suffering or grief of another; an expression of compassion or condolence’.

The ability to understand and feel what others are feeling by placing oneself in the other persons ‘shoes’, (as it were), is more intimate and immediate than feeling or expressing sympathy from a somewhat detached perspective.

Compassion is a broader term than empathy encompassing a wider form of care and concern for others’ well-being. Compassion, care and empathy are said to be the cornerstone of health and social care in any society.Volunteers join Samaritans because they want to make a positive difference to the lives of others in need of help.Psychologists who examined the lives of care workers concluded that those most effective, developed in themselves traits of compassion, hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and resilience, along with a continued commitment to their profession.

Whatever the Samaritans of Spain undertake to do in the public sphere is grounded on empathetic listening and based on a solid moral and ethical foundation.''

HELP Vega Baja opens new HQ in Torrevieja

By Andy Mansell After thirty five years of providing assistance and advice to expatriate UK residents in the municipality, HELP Vega Baja re-opened the doors to its headquarters this week.

Torrevieja NGO Councillor, Carmen Morate, was in attendance to show support and cut the ribbon along with President of the nonprofit making organisation, Michele Masson.

They both highlighted the close relationship between the local government and HELP and were delighted to be able to continue and develop the collaboration from the new headquarters in Rambla de Juan Mateo 4. In fact, the NGO will also have a help desk within the new facility.

Carmen Morate told the audience ''This heralds a new stage of close collaboration within the city thanks to the proximity between these headquarters and the OARI (Office of Attention to the International Resident) in the Plaza de Capdepont. We now have a large number of volunteers available to refer people to, enabling us to work more closely together. " Michele Masson explained ''We have been working in Torrevieja for 35 years and are delighted to re-open the offices in collabora-

tion with the City Council for the benefit of all those who need help, it is a new chapter for us" She added ''We are very fortunate because of the large number of volunteers on hand to help those in need and fundraisers who raised 26,000 euros in donations last year which was distributed to groups and individuals in our area who needed it."

The organisation has 1600 volunteers working for them, 1400 of whom live in the Vega Baja region.

Included in the list of activities HELP's Volunteers offer are hospital visits; social groups for people living alone; support groups for diabetics and patients with Parkinson's disease; social workers, lawyers, classes in con-

Neighbourhood Watch meeting date The next meeting of the San Luis/La Siesta/El Chapperral Urbanizacion's Neighbourhood Watch Organisation in Torrevieja will be held on Monday May 8 starting at 16.30pm in Casa Ventura.

The meeting arranged for April has been cancelled owing to council holidays.

The Neighbourhood Watch are sad to report this will be the final meeting of the group unless new people are willing to take it over.

Anyone living in the area interested in getting involved in keeping their environment safe and free of crime is advised to go along to the meeting. Everyone is welcome.

Torrevieja choir gives donation to hospital

By Staff Reporter Members of the Crescendo Choir in Torrevieja recently handed over a cheque for 100 euros to the Torrevieja Hospital Fellowship, an organisation, which provides cakes, sweets, drinks and other snacks to outpatients receiving all day chemotherapy treatment at the City hospital.

Mary Mitchell, Choir President was delighted to hand over the cheque to fellow choir member, Jean McNary, who is also a member of the hospital fellowship, which is totally reliant on donations.

Many of the choir members have received treatment at the centre and felt the donation was a way of saying thank you.

Earlier in the month, the international choir, made up of members from many different countries including UK, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Netherlands performed their regular twice yearly concert to residents of the Casa Verde in Almoradi. As usual the show went down a storm and the choir were asked to perform two renditions of the audience's favourite Amapola, which means poppy in Spanish.

They will be performing a free concert in the Benijofar Church this coming Sunday April 21 at 7.00pm, where donations towards the Church's restoration will be gratefully received.

The meat pie is king

by Andy Mansell Over ten thousand Murcian Pasteles de Carne were consumed in one evening last week during a fiesta in the regional capital.

The puff pastry tart filled with minced meat has been a staple of the Murcian table for more than 400 years and is considered to be one of the region's gastronomic stars.

The annual festival celebrates the pastel along with local beers and wines from Murcia aiming to promote regional products to both locals and visitors to the area.

This year's event was mired in controversy as AREPA, the regional bakers association refused to take part or endorse the festival owing to a change of location for the event.

Previously the fiesta had been held in Plaza Belluga, but this year the City Council decided to move the fiesta across the river to Cuartel de Artelleria, the former army barracks.

The move did not deter the thousands of eager pastry lovers who queued for over an hour in a zig-zag stretching back to Gran Via to get their lips around the golden tart.

City Councillor for Culture, Jesus Pacheco, responsible for organising this year's festival, told the Spanish press: ''We moved it here to the Cuartel de Artelleria, because the neighborhood of Carmen asked us for fiesta activity.'' '' Also, many residents and business people were unhappy that everything

Volvo ocean race update One of the most prestigious events on the World sporting calendar arrives in Alicante in October, when the Volvo Ocean Race arrives in the city. Alicante will welcome the world for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18 when the Race Village opens on October 11. This year will be the fourth time Alicante has opened the action, and the third since the race set up its permanent HQ in the port.

The start of the longest professional sporting event in the world brings people from far and wide to explore the Alicante Race Village, see the iconic Volvo Ocean 65 boats first hand.

Over and above anything else the start of the 201718 edition of the race is not to be missed as it marks the beginning of nine months of storms, speed, lifechanging stories, stunning imagery and nail-biting finishes in an epic journey around the world.

This year will see the premiere of a new monotype designed by the Frenchman Guillaume Verdier and built under the direction of the Italian shipyard Persico.

Verdier joins the design team of the Volvo Ocean Race and is already working with the race on the crucial decision as to whether the next boat will be a monotype or a multihull.

The final decision will be announced on May 18 in Gothenburg, hometown of Volvo, the company owner and main sponsor of the race.

This is only one of a series of important decisions to be taken in the coming weeks and will be announced in Gothenburg.Organisers have issued a statement saying May's announcement will form the most radical transformation of the Volvo Ocean Race since it was born in 1973 under the name of Whitbread Round the World Race.

The terrorism of the rich

There are times when a few words explain things better than does a book. Theatre impresario Peter Ustinov drove the nail home when he said, “War is the terrorism of the rich; terrorism is the war of the poor.”

Whilst urban terrorism dominates the headlines what has been described as ‘murder by government’ claimed 164 million lives during this past century. This appalling figure is blue-pencilled out of the public consciousness because, as Alexander Solzhenitsyn surmised, the perpetrators own the media.

The figure of 164 million slaughtered by government is not a figure plucked from the air. This was the findings of the respected Journal of Peace Research based in Hawaii. The disclosure of researcher R. J Rummel in his Power, Genocide and Mass Murder (31 No. 1 1994) brings into stark relief governments insatiable appetite for human harvest.

This appalling death toll was a consequence not of Islamic terrorism but of ‘legitimate laundered terrorism’ practiced primarily by Capitalist interests, Bolshevism and Mao tse Tung’s Communist reign of terror. There were also many murder fests in Africa, the Far East and Middle East. Another report reveals that the U.S government, aided by its allies, has been directly or indirectly responsible for over 30 million dead since 1945.

Shamefully, mainstream media launders the endless conflicts as political, banking and corporate elites jostle for global control and influence. As one German politician put it, “media is the keyboard on which government plays.”

Playwright George Bernard Shaw; ‘Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.” His comment is spot on and it is this foolish notion that makes us all slaves to duplicitous self-serving political elite who abuse our naiveté and our trust time after time.

The reality is that the refugee crisis afflicting Europe and terrorism is a crisis caused by the political elite. The governing elite are not fighting terrorism; they are the terrorists. If duped NATO service personnel were really fighting terrorism then they would come home and oust their treacherous back-stabbing political elite.

There will be no peace on earth until we decide enough is enough. The NATO West has no legitimacy in its stated intention to remove by sanctions and by force legitimate sovereign nations. We really must stop deluding ourselves that the overthrow of independent governments is in pursuit of our security.

Oh to be in England by

I miss England. My friends in Spain look at me incredulously when I say that, but there it is.

As much as I enjoy our life here with the glorious weather, spectacular coastline and endless choice of good, reasonably priced eating establishments, I still hanker for the Mother country.

There are not many subjects that the Princess and I disagree on, but the question of which domicile occupies the principal place in our hearts is one of them.

We have therefore agreed to a small compromise because I now take a couple of weeks each year to visit the UK, staying with old friends, re-visiting places that hold pleasant memories for me, and often, just getting behind the wheel and seeing where the next country lane takes me.

Not surprisingly, this frequently leads me to ancient buildings where painted signs swing in the breeze, and just so happen to be licenced to sell intoxicating beverages.

I marvel at the local dialects I hear on my journeys. In such a small country and with a highly mobile work force, it is staggering that regional accents still flourish and a pride in the town or county of origin remains important to many people.

I once overheard a conversation in the Cornish village of Polperro where two old boys were discussing a trip into England no less.

One told the other that he had recently visited “Egzeder” which prompted the question: “Lykun didee?”

Every two years a group of us who lived and worked on the beautiful islands of Bermuda during the 70’s, gather for a reunion.

All British by birth, we now live in various locations across the globe and we meet in such places as California, Vancouver, Spain and this year in

Blighty where most still have family and friends.

The venue is Stow-on-the-Wold in the delightful Cotswolds – the epitome of Englishness, albeit somewhat blighted by the presence of rich and infamous celebrities.

It would be my first choice of home were it not for the neighbours. With characters such as Jeremy Clarkson and Damien Hurst on your doorstep, the likelihood of having your lawn ploughed up by an out of control Ferrari or finding a herd of cows preserved in formaldehyde in a nearby field, would be just too much.

But I shall be content with my brief visit and return to Spain reinvigorated by my English ‘fix’.

Until next year at least.

Head to the coast for a longer life

People living on the coast of our region can expect to live longer than those who live inland

People who live on the coast of the Marina Baixa, Marina Alta and Vega Baja regions can expect to live a longer life than those living in the interior towns and villages, according to recent statistics.

The figures, released by the Generalitat's Statistics Department, show women living on the coast could live an extra year and men up to two years longer.

The average life expectancy for coastal dwellers is 88, whereas for those who reside in the interior the age is 87.

Interestingly, this dichotomy is peculiar to the Alicante region, as in other areas of Valencia and Castellon, statistics show the figures are reversed and people living inland have a longer life.The facts are even more significant, when surface area and population density are taken into account, as in the Alicante region, the differences are not as pronounced as in other parts of the wider region.

Antonio Martinez Puche, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Alicante, speaking after analysing the statistics said there were a number of reasons for the difference in life expectancy.

“The key is the benign nature of climate and greater availability of social health services available and these will naturally effect the health of the population'' he said, adding ''In the coastal areas there is a greater concentration of resources of this type, both public and private''.He also believes, people who move to the coast to be closer to the sea and beaches, tend to stay there for the opportunity to get more exercise, increasing their mobility. Whereas those living inland are not able to exercise as much and have less opportunities to be mobile.A lesser amount of health and social provision and inferior communications, could also be contributory factors.Another interesting statistic is the longevity index which takes into account life expectancy after the age of 65 and this too shows women on the coast could live up to 88 against 87 inland and for men the figures are 87 on the coast and 85 inland.

The report also concluded that by the year 2030, life expectancy for women could pass the age 90 barrier.

Murder most foul by

A few weeks ago a young 24 year old Spanish man was kicked to death outside a popular disco.

Last year a British couple were killed by a bullet to each of them in the living room of their home.

Both of these horrific crimes took place in and near to the beautiful village of Jalon in the province of Alicante, and popular with tourists for its wine and lovely almond valley walks.

Which prompts the question ‘What’s going on?’ Let me make this quite clear, Jalon is not a cauldron of crime, but it is part of a growing epidemic of sadistic violence amongst ordinary people, especially teenagers and other young people, and not just in Spain or the UK but throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Knife warfare in schools and discos seems now to be commonplace, and we are constantly being told about bloody life-threatening brawls in public places such as on public transport and even in cinemas.

So once again it beggars the question ‘Why?’ What has happened to the human race that so many of its young generation gloat over the thought of ramming a knife into anopponent’s ribs, smashing a skull with anything they can lay their hands on, or shattering a beer glass into a supporter’s face at a football match? I don’t know about you but even the very thought of all this sends a chill down my spine.

But time and time again I ask myself what it is about these mindless creatures who have no respect for the lives of their fellow human beings. They are willing to kill the innocent for no reason at all, regardless of the consequences. So what are we to do about this horrific wave of murder which has claimed the lives of ordinary people like 24 year old Alejandro Pavia Flores from Villalonga and the two British expats Peter and Jean Tarsey? No doubt psychiatrists will suggest their own reasons for this madness that has descended upon us , and there is a great vocal element amongst the general public in the UK and, I suspect, also in Spain about how to deal with psychopathic youngsters that are out of control: ‘Lock ‘em up for life and throw the keys away!’ ‘Bring back National Service!’ , ‘ Bring back hanging!’. But no matter how emotional we feel, especially those poor relatives and friends of loved ones who have fallen victim to this murderous frenzy, surely the solution is not a return to the medieval punishment of the past, but in the case of youngsters who kill for kicks, let’s turn to those who should take responsibility for their kid’s behavior.

If we punish anyone it should surely be the parents? Educate these people into what is right or wrong, and that if they close a blind eye to what their kids are getting up to, then they must be the ones who suffer the consequences, be it in fines, or taxes, or a lengthy prison sentence. I’ve talked quite a lot about youngsters, but we mustn’t forget that many of these brutal crimes are carried out by older offenders.

I don’t know how many of you will have read my article a few weeks ago about the UK fugitives who are living amongst us in secret here in Spain, well let’s remember that some of these repugnant creatures are mindless middle-aged killers.

But whoever they are, and wherever they come from, what they are committing is cold-blooded murder, murder most foul, and even though it is too late to help young Alejandro Pavia Flores and Peter and Jean Tarsey, it’s our duty to find a way to stop it. Cyclists and Clunk, the rules

I know this is a subject that can cause a lot of upset but I really am at a loss.

I have been told by various friends that cyclists, especially those that are in a club have the right of way on the roads. There are many different arguments to this of which I appreciate but if I am driving in the car and am on the roundabout, indicating left, surely the cyclists have to stop and give way. This however did not happen.

As I was about to take the left exit, instead of 12 cyclists stopping at the white lines they carried straight on and we very nearly collided.

I was then hurled abuse and lots of swear words but for the life of me I cannot see how I was in the wrong! What made it worse was my children were in the car and had to listen to their profanities.

I understand that these cyclists are in training but I am convinced they would put safety over anything else.

I have always encouraged my children to cycle and quite often go with them myself on the roads and as a driver I know the laws of the road and with this I teach my children to ride with awareness and safety for then all my hard work undone by a few inconsiderate cyclists.

Is it just an ignorant few that disobey the rules and put people in danger or do all cyclists feel they have the monopoly of the roads?

Rip off I was watching tv the other night, one of the English adverts for a well known supermarket came on, they are selling Easter eggs 3 for £10. Please could someone explain to me why the English Easter eggs over here are at least 7€ each. Buying and solving disputes online - 24,000 consumers used new European platform in first year While there are strong rules in place in the EU to protect consumers, in practice consumers sometimes encounter problems getting redress when their rights are violated, particularly cross border.

When consumers have made their purchase online, they should also be able to solve such problems online. Be it a seller refusing to repair a defective laptop within the guarantee period, or a travel agent not willing to refund a ruined holiday, such disputes can be settled faster and cheaper online and outside the court, via an Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform, launched by the Commission on 15 February 2016.

In its first year, over 24 000 consumer complaints were lodged. More than a third of the complaints concerned cross-border purchases within the EU. Most complaints were about clothing and footwear, airline tickets and information and communication technology goods.

Examples • A consumer from Italy complained about a defective ICT product bought from an online trader in Belgium. The platform sent the complaint to the competent dispute resolution body in Belgium. As a result, the Italian consumer was reimbursed. • A consumer from Luxembourg complained about a car rented online from a trader in Greece. The platform sent the complaint to the competent dispute resolution body in Greece.

The dispute was amicably settled within 60 days. The trader fully reimbursed the additional expenses incurred by the consumer. • The platform often also works as a channel of first contact between the parties and a solution is often found bilaterally without taking the complaint to a dispute resolution body.

For example, A Belgian consumer had been complaining for months about a defective dryer to a Belgian trader, with no success. When the trader received the complaint via the platform, he contacted the consumer and offered to replace the dryer with a new one.

Next steps The Commission will prepare a first detailed report on the functioning of the platform towards the end of 2017. It is also planning further activities in 2017 to engage more traders and to further promote the platform amongst consumers. The Commission will also further improve the platform's user-friendliness and monitor whether traders comply with their obligation to put a link to the platform on their website.

Background The Online Dispute Resolution platform can be accessed in any of the EU's official languages.

The platform channels disputes submitted to it to certified alternative dispute resolution bodies that respect binding quality requirements established at EU level. So far, 260 alternative dispute resolution (ADR) bodies are registered on the platform.

To date, 27 Member States have communicated to the Commission that they have fully implemented the Directive on consumer ADR. 24 Member States have sent their national list of ADR entities. 27 Member States have designated their national ODR contact point.

Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein will join the platform during this year.

Investment trends in six central Eastern European property markets Investment in central Eastern European (CEE) Real Estate in 2017 is likely to surpass a record-breaking 2016 year, according to a report published by Colliers International and CMS. The sources of investment flows into the CEE region are expected to remain diverse in 2017, with Asian and CEE investors becoming increasingly active in the real estate market. The report examines key trends in six Central Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Romania) since 2012 and looks ahead to 2017.

In Q1 2017, preliminary real estate investment in the CEE-6 markets has seen a 41 per cent and 45 per cent increase compared with Q1 2016 and Q1 2015 respectively. Preliminary indications also suggest continued local investor activity in Hungary and the Czech Republic and the entry of Thai investors to Poland and Czech Republic.

‘The growing maturity of the CEE region may help combat the specific risks affecting Western Europe, specifically ’Brexit’ and its consequences which are not yet known but might even end up as a positive for CEE,’ says Mark Robinson, senior researcher, CEE, Colliers.

Higher returns and solid prospects for rental growth in CEE are likely to encourage US and Western Europe capital flows to continue at a similar level to the €4.9bn reached in 2016.

Western Europe remained the main source of investment in the CEE real estate market last year but marked shift took place in 2016 with South African (20 per cent), Asian (16 per cent) and CEE investments surpassing those from the G10. This is predicted to continue in 2017, with Asian and domestic/CEE sources continuing to drive new investment.As Asian investment increases in the real estate sector, this may result in more large portfolio type deals, matching or even exceeding last year’s results interest from Asian investors,

particularly in Poland and Hungary, has grown considerably, with total investments reaching €2bn in 2016.South Africa’s activity meanwhile reached a record level of €2.4bn in 2016.

While 2017 might not match this, with over 10 of the domestic REITs committed to the CEE region either directly or indirectly, deals should still be executed. Cross-border and domestic flows have more than doubled in last five years, reaching €2.6bn in 2016.

The Slovak and Czech markets were both the largest origins and destinations of CEE crossborder flow in 2011-16, while Hungary’s domestic flows have grown most rapidly in the recent period‘The further we get from 1989, the more developed the CEE markets become and the less reliant on outside investors we are - not

only in the real estate sector, but in the whole M&A market,’ says Wojciech Koczara, partner at CMS. ’The spread of Warranty & Indemnity insurance across the CEE markets is another sign of growing maturity in the region as well as the increased level of sophistication in the structuring of large real estate deals.’

I have been living in Benidorm for the last 10 years, having tried my hand at many things from karaoke host to Radio presenter I finally found my true place in this wonderful and diverse seaside town! On everyone’s lips President of the United States, Donald Trump, has demanded that he rides with The Queen in a gold-plated carriage when he undertakes a State Visit to the UK later this year. Whether or not his request will be met is unknown, as are many details of the State Visit, which is expected to take place in October this year. When President Obama visited the UK on a State Visit, he chose not to ride in a carriage and instead opted for a low-key car, shunting the limelight and obvious risks.

Dos Caballos festival comes to Elche

Residents and visitors of Elche should be on the lookout for umbrellas on wheels later on this month, when the Dos Caballos, Citreon 2CV Grand National rally comes to the city.

Production of the French Car of the People stopped in 1990 and since then it has developed cult status amongst it fanatical owners and devotees.

The humble motor car, first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show of 1948, was originally conceived as a vehicle for French farmers still using horses and carts to work on their land, hence it's French title DeuxChevaux, 'Two Horses'. The umbrella nickname came about because of the shape of its distinctive body.

By seriously undercutting the cost of its rivals like the VW Beetle, Fiat 500, Renault 4 and Austin Mini by as much as half, the 2CV sold in its millions across Europe, with over 5 million being made before production stopped.

Twenty seven years after the last one rolled off the production line, interest in the Citreon workhorse is as high as ever, with good condition examples selling for thousands more than their original price.

The Elche 2CV Gran Nacional has been organized by the 2CV Club del Mediterraneo and is expected to attract fine examples of the car from all over Spain.The event starts on Friday April 28 and runs until Sunday April 30. Participating cars will spend the first two days driving around the area visiting local landmarks and beaches in convoys of no more than 50.

However on the Sunday at 11.00am all the participating vehicles will be on public viewing at the Paseo de la Estacion in the centre of the city, within an area of around 300 metres There will be demonstrations, stalls selling 2CV parts, books, magazines, stickers, T shirts and memorabilia, food and drink, and music will be played throughout the day.

At the end of the event, prizes will be handed out in various categories by the organising group.

What’s on at Finca San Miguel de Salinas

Finca San Miguel de Salinas recently welcomed some new residents through its doors – nine baby goslings! The first three were born on March 18, followed by another six ten days later. Of the gaggle, two goslings – Milo and Mila - were a little weak, but after Mona gave them some TLC at home, they returned honking with delight to their brothers and sisters.

Three dogs – Lines, India and Savana - were recently rescued by the finca after a local shelter was full to the brim. India was adopted the very next day by Kirsten and Wolfgang and Renate and her husband fell in love with Savana. Lines has found his forever home in Hamburg, Germany.

The finca hosts an open day on the last Saturday of every month and on Saturday April 29 from 1.00pm, everyone is invited to join its annual Easter party, promising fun for the whole family. Feel free to bring apples, carrots and tomatoes to feed the farm animals or cat food/ dog food for the cats and dogs. Finca San Miguel is supported by ‘Happy Animales Spain’, founded by Mona Nowak.

Happy Animales Spain is a registered charity committed to the welfare of impoverished and abandoned animals. At Finca San Miguel, neglected animals are taken, provided with any veterinary care they might need along with a lot of cuddles and very often adopted.The

With summer approaching it is time to start enjoying those delicious salads and this wonderful salsa can be used to spice up some chicken or enjoy with tortilla chips as a snack.

8 cups tomatoes, peeled, chopped and drained 2 1⁄2 cups onions, chopped 1 1⁄2 cups green peppers 1 cup jalapeno pepper, chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons pepper 1⁄8 cup canning salt 1⁄3 cup sugar 1⁄3 cup vinegar 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce 1 (12 ounce) can tomato paste Mix all together and bring to a slow boil for 10 minutes. Seal in jars and cook in hot water bath for 10 minutes. This is a medium heat salsa. This is also a chunky salsa so if you want a smoother salsa cut your veggies into smaller pieces or alternaviley use a blender for required consistency.

Yo-yo dieting hikes death risks in overweight heart disease patients

For overweight people with heart disease, trying and failing to lose weight may be more dangerous than not losing weight at all.

A new retrospective study has concluded that patients whose weight fluctuates the most die twice as quickly or have twice the risk of heart attack or stroke compared to people who maintain a stable body weight.

And their risk of developing diabetes grows by 78 per cent.

Being overweight is already known to pose serious health risks. The new research says dropping the pounds and putting them back on again poses additional dangers.

If you are an overweight person with heart disease who lost 20 pounds ‘you are worse off if you drop your weight and gain it back’ than if you didn't lose it in the first place, chief author Dr. Sripal Bangalore, an interventional cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Medical Center told Reuters Health.

The study is saying, ‘If you're going to lose weight, do it right and you need to take it seriously,’ said Dr. Ira Ockene, a professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, who

was not connected with the research.

Such yo-yo dieting, where a person's weight fluctuates repeatedly, is already known to be unhealthy in people without heart disease.

The new study in the New England Journal of Medicine explored whether that was specifically true for people with coronary artery disease, where fatty deposits have built up in the blood vessels feeding the heart muscle. The researchers recycled data from 9,509 volunteers who were part of a Lipitor study published in 2005 and sponsored by Pfizer.

After adjusting for various factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, race, gender, diabetes, cholesterol levels and treatment with Lipitor, the Bangalore team found that people whose weights fluctuated the most were 2.24 times more likely to die from any cause within about five years, 2.17 times more likely to have a heart attack and 2.36 times more likely to be hit with a stroke than people whose weights were the most stable.

The dangers posed by shifting weight were least pronounced in people who had a normal weight to begin with.

Ockene said people need to put weight loss in perspective.

‘Studies show people set unattainable goals. Heavy people say, 'I need to lose 40 pounds' and they set a goal that is largely unattainable. And when they lose 10 pounds they're disappointed. And they say, 'What the hell' and they just gain it back,’ he said.

‘But if you lose 10 pounds and keep it off, your diabetes will be better, your blood pressure will be better, your lipids will be better, a lot of things will be better. You don't need to lose 30 or 40 pounds,’ he said.

‘That's an important issue for people to understand.’

As a typical example of patients in the study whose weights fluctuated significantly, the researchers cited the case of a 53-year-old man whose weight went from 231 pounds to 244 pounds three months later, then dropped to 211 pounds eighteen months later before going up to 253 pounds after another 18 months had passed.

BlaBlaCar changes gear Offers drivers cheaper car leases BlaBlaCar, whose amateur chauffeurs share costs with passengers on long-distance journeys, will offer them cheaper car leases through French bank Societe Generale in the latest threat to traditional transport models.

The Paris-based start-up - which is extremely popular in Spain - will first offer the new packages for Opel models through the bank’s leasing business to more active BlaBlaCar drivers in France, before deploying the program more widely, Chief Executive Nicolas Brusson said.

BlaBlaCar, whose phone app has some 40 million users in 22 countries, is among the so-called mobility services whose growth is disrupting carmakers and transport companies alike.

Besides ride-sharing, they include mainly local ride-hailing services such as Uber and carsharing firms such as Avis-owned ZipCar, which offer access to self-drive vehicle fleets for as little as an hour at a time.

‘The goal is to expand that geographically,’ Brusson said. ‘We can pioneer a new approach to car ownership based on usage.’

In response to the threat, vehicle manufacturers and transport operators have struck deals with providers of mobility services over the past decade or developed their own.

Daimler launched car-sharing through its Car2Go subsidiary in 2008. Among many more recent deals, Opel parent General Motors invested $500 million in ride-hailing firm Lyft and PSA Group has backed several startups. Even France’s stateowned SNCF railway has partnered with Zipcar.

BlaBlaCar allows car owners to cover their expenses but not make a profit - which shields it

from regulatory costs and tax, further improving its appeal to passengers.

Thanks to its potential scale, the Societe Generale ALD Automotive partnership adds the competitive clout of corporate leasing to BlaBlaCar’s already frugal peer-to-peer model.

The start-up’s 9 million drivers buy an estimated 1.3 million new cars each year.

Monthly rates would start as low as €164 including maintenance for the entry-level Opel Corsa mini, providing drivers complete at least one ride-sharing trip per month.

A four-year consumer leasing deal with a purchase option on a comparable Corsa would be about €227 per month, based on a quotation from Aramisauto, the online car retailer and price comparison service.

With clients typically paying €20 per journey, a driver could cover the entire vehicle leasing cost with just one round-trip per fortnight carrying two passengers.

‘Ride-sharing is already an attractive option.

Will it replace the ownership model? For most people, no - but for some people, absolutely,’ Arndt Ellinghorst, a London-based analyst with Evercore ISI, said.

On larger models, the leasing plans will include on-board wireless internet for up to seven devices, a feature more often associated with higher-end ground transport services.

For ALD, Europe’s biggest corporate leasing firm, the BlaBlaCar deal is a step into consumer car financing. The companies are also offering their ride-sharing plans on a handful of models from Toyota, Volkswagen and Peugeot.

World’s largest Rubik’s Cube?

University of Michigan mechanical engineering students have made one of the most popular puzzle games much larger. And tougher to solve.

Seven former and current students unveiled a 1,500-pound Rubik’s Cube during a ceremony Thursday inside the G.G. Brown engineering building on the Ann Arbor campus. The massive, mostly aluminum structure is meant to be played by students and others on campus.

Four students came up with the idea three years ago and handed down the project to other students.

“It’s the largest solvable mechanical stationary Rubik’s Cube,” said Ryan Kuhn, a 22-year-old senior who helped assemble the giant puzzle this week. “It was kind of an urban myth of North Campus, this giant Rubik’s Cube that’s been going on for a while.”

The oversized version of the brain-teasing 3-D puzzle, which has flummoxed players since its heyday in the 1980s, is much harder to decipher than its diminutive counterpart, said Kuhn, who called it an “interactive mechanical art piece.”

The puzzle is solved when the player is able to manipulate the cube until all nine squares on each of its six sides display an individual color.

“It’s very reasonable that it could take at least an hour” to solve, said Martin Harris, who helped conceive the project in 2014 while hanging out in the College of Engineering honors office.

Samsung S8 pre-orders surpass S7's Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone have exceeded those of its predecessor S7, the firm's mobile chief said last week, suggesting many consumers are unphased by last year's Galaxy Note 7 fires.

Strong initial demand for the S8 will be encouraging Samsung, who are recovering from one of the worst product safety failures in tech history, which ended in the Note 7's swift withdrawal.

The new smartphone has received favour-

able reviews ahead of its release date in Korea, the United States and Canada on April 21. Some investors and analysts have even predicted a first-year sales record for the South Korean company.

‘It's still a bit early, but initial response to the pre-orders that have begun at various places across the world have been better than expected,’ mobile chief Koh Dong-jin said at an S8 media briefing. He said the S8 will be the safest Galaxy smartphone to date due to measures implemented to avoid the battery failures that caused some Note 7s to spontaneously combust.

Analysts said strong S8 sales are likely to help Samsung to its best-ever quarterly profit in AprilJune, along with a booming memory chip market that is widely expected to deliver record revenue this year for the industry as a whole.

Samsung has been working to restore investor trust as well as its reputation since the Note 7's withdrawal in October within two months of being on the market, losing out on $5.4 billion in profit.

Senior executives told foreign media on the sidelines of the briefing that it will take time for Samsung's brand image to recover. They also said Samsung has seen a rebound in consumer sentiment toward the firm since announcing the results of a probe into the fires and preventative measures on January 23.

How many times have you asked one of your friends if they can lend you their car as a favour, because yours is off the road?

The last time I borrowed a car from a mate, another driver clipped the wing mirror, shattering the glass, resulting in a total replacement of the whole mirror mechanism. I would be too embarrassed to ask him again.

But not as embarrassed as a guy from Thailand who borrowed his mate’s million euro Lamborghini to show at a party and managed to write it off by crashing into a palm tree.

The man jumped into the black Murcialago LP670-4 SuperVeloce after eating at a restaurant with pals in Bangkok.

He had two friends in the car and it became airborne as he drove up a steep part of the road.

He then lost control of the supercar, clipped a motorbike and ploughed the vehicle into a palm tree at the side of the

Driving Licence App On Uk Phones By 2018

UK Motorists could be allowed to have their driving licence on their phones by 2018, according to the government agency developing the plans.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said a test system would be in place

by September this year and that it would develop a “quick, easy and secure” service between April and March 2018.

It wants the digital service to allow people to share and validate information with “trusted” third parties, although stressed that the new system will not replace existing plastic licences.

The DVLA chief executive, Oliver Morley, revealed on Twitter in May 2016 that a prototype for a digital licence was in development.

He tweeted a photo of an iPhone screen displaying the image of a licence in the Apple Pay app, with which people can use their phones to make payments and store documents such as boarding passes.

Further details on the timetable for such a service have been included in the DVLA’s business plan for the next 12 months.

It states: “During 2017/18 we will be developing a quick, easy and secure service to allow customers to view a representation of their driving licence on their smartphone.

The driver will be in control of their data, and this can be used to share and validate driver information with trusted third parties through a secure website.

This service will not replace the full driving licence. The digital licence service will only be available to driving licence holders who have authenticated themselves on gov.uk through the existing driving licence service. This service will be available 24/7, wherever the driver has a web connection.

“We will develop a private beta service by September 2017.”

Jeeps in the Utah sand The Jeep and Mopar brands have once again teamed up to develop a variety of vehicles that will debut at the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, this week.

Now in its 51st year, the event is attended by thousands of die-hard offroad enthusiasts looking to enjoy a week of serious off-roading on some of the country’s most well-known and challenging trails.

The Easter Jeep Safari consists of trail rides, mostly day long trips, departing from Moab Utah throughout the 9 day long event.

Mopar - a parts and services outfit within the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group - was tasked with developing and constructing the vehicles from a range of available Jeep Performance Parts, and were briefed to keep 4x4 off-road performance in mind.

Among the 2017 class of Jeep-Mopar concepts are a Jeep Grand One - commissioned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ - and a Jeep Safari, tailor made for the arduous conditions of a desert landscape.

The other vehicles heading out on the Moab event represent a Swiss Army knife of functions, including the Jeep Illuminator (named after its powerful lighting capabilities) and the Jeep Quicksand, a hot rod for petrolheads “who love the sand life” according to the American marque.

“Jeep and Mopar have teamed up over 15 years to create unique, fun and highly capable concept vehicles for the popular Easter Jeep Safari in Moab,” said Mopar’s Pietro Gorlier.

“These concept vehicles are a perfect example of how off-road enthusiasts can use Jeep Performance Parts to personalize and enhance the already outstanding Jeep capability, allowing them to face the toughest trails in the world.”

The squad has been severely depleted by injuries in recent weeks and as results from teams around them did not go in their favour, they face a must win game this coming Sunday April 23.

After their disappointing 0-2 home loss to Rayo Ibense in their last outing, they take on a Novelda team, who currently sit fourth in the league, currently occupying the last play off spot.

Novelda are also five points ahead of orihuela, so unless the amarillos can win on Sunday, their promotion hopes will be over for the current season.Even a win would leave Orihuela depending on other results going their way on the final round of matches on the following weekend.Coach, Machuca expects to have a full squad availbale for the crunch match, which resembles something of a must win cup tie for the yellow shirts of Orihuela on Sunday.

Medbar Golf Society at Altereal

The Medbar Golf Society from El Raso played on one of their favourite golf courses last week on the first interim game of the year.

The individual Stableford event attracted a good turnout of 19 players to the Altereal Course, which was in excellent condition.

The sun blazed down throughout the day meaning players needed to replenish liquid supplies regularly and scoring was good for all participants on the day.
