This Tuesday saw a meeting held between the Consolleria of the area, MªJosé Salvador and Denia Mayor, Vicent Grimalt whereby plans were presented for the work to be carried out on the tramline that passes through Denia.

The Department of Infrastructures and Vertebration of the Territory has already outlined the work to be carried out on the Denia – Benidorm (Line 9) line of the ‘TRAM’ in its passage through Denia after the service was suspended last July for security reasons.

Works will begin this year and will especially affect Avenida Joan Fuster, from the train station to Calle Diana.

With an investment of 2million€, the work focuses on improving the road in Denia to allow the tracks to be fully integrated with the streets – allowing pedestrian crossings and removing level crossings.

To remove the need for FGV to control traffic in the area, roundabouts and traffic lights will be installed along the section of road that crosses Denia city.

Friction as A&E department at Denia Hospital fails to pass inspection Concession to appeal report issued by the Directorate General of the High Health Inspectorate.

by Tahnee Wright Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud’s emergency department recently failed to pass inspection, which, among other deficiencies, detected a wait of more than 24 hours. The report also condemned high turnover rates of nursing staff, auxiliaries and especially caretakers, stating that hospital staff are dissatisfied with the way in which the hospital is managed and with the high mental load they bear, being forced to make fast and complex decisions that imply great responsibility.

The consession have already denounced the work of the inspectors, attributing the bad result to an influenza epidemic.

They confirm that since the visit was made a year ago, no request for information or clarification has been received from the Inspectorate and the report therefore fails to take into account the various measures taken since the visit.

Whilst the report concludes in highlighting a high percentage of patients who must wait more than 24 hours to be admitted to a hospital bed or ICU, data published by the Department of Health shows the hospital served almost 57,000 urgencies in 2016. 83.16% of these emergencies were attended in the times that mark the international protocols, above the average of the Conselleria de Sanidad, which is 81.88%.

The concession has claimed the report to have a complete lack of scientific rigor. They also claim the data exposed in relation to the rotation of the personnel to be erroneous and exaggerated.

The concession will present its allegations against the report in an appeal and has stressed it will do everything in its power so as not to generate unnecessary confusion and discomfort for the staff or patients at the hospital.

A request for a revised inspection will be submitted, with an ideal date of March, which the concession explains will be outside of the influenza season and also away from the summer months, where the Marina Alta region sees a high influx of tourists.

Marina Alta municipalities to receive 2.6million€ Funds to replenish beaches after storm damage awarded to Denia, Javea, Calpe, Benissa and Teluada Moraira.

An assessment carried out by the Valencian Tourist Agency (AVT) estimated the repair cost for all municipalities in the Region of Valencia after damages faced in the January storms amounts to 4,330,000€.

Of this amount, 1,674,000€ will go to the counties of Alicante and five municipalities of the Marina Alta – Denia, Javea, Calpe, Benissa and Teulada-Moraira will benefit from the remaining 2,626,000€ to fine-tune their beaches in the face of the tourist season.

The funds will be used to replenish beaches and their canals, along with the recreational and sports facilities.

The Interdepartmental Commission for the Followup and Coordination of Post-Mercy approved the budgetary allocation under the Contingency Fund 2017 as a matter of urgency, in order to carry out the necessary actions that allow repair of all the tourism infrastructures that were affected by the storms.

Immediately after the storms, the regional Secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer met with the affected municipalities and he has thanked the AVT technicians for their speedy identification and assessment work. He said that whilst the quantification of damages was higher than initially expected, works have already commenced to ensure the beaches are ready to receive tourists as early as Easter.

Courts rule no chalets on the Montgo Works will begin this year

Continued from front page In particular, the pedestrian crossing between Avenida Joan Fuster and Carrer del Pintor Llorens will re-open, just outside the train station, seeing the existing fences removed and step free access will be built between Calle Diana and Avenida Joan Fuster.

This first phase of improvement is expected to take place in 2017. The second phase of improvement aims to improve the long stretch of road between Calle Diana and the future intermodal bus and long-distance train station that has been planned in Denia.

This section will see an access roundabout installed from Avenida Joan Fuster to the sports pavilion and will open the road that runs parallel to the IES Historian Chabàs that is currently closed to traffic.

The Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) of the Comunitat has ruled that the Montgo agricultural colonies cannot be transformed into chalets.

The ruling describes the ‘valuable cultural heritage’ of the agricultural lots built in 1922 and determines that ‘in no case can actions be admitted for the covert construction of housing for residential use’.

The Montgó Natural Resource Management Plan (PORN) is already substantiated but has recently been endorsed by the courts following a long litigation case brought by the owner of one of the colonies who had transformed it substantially into a chalet. The ruling has declared the housing to be illegal and forces its demolition.

This is not the first time a case to transform the colonies has been brought to court. Another ruling in 2010 prohibited an owner from transforming one of the colonies into cottages after they appealed against the decision of the Town Planning Department of the City of Denia to deny them the license for works in 2006. The appeal was dismissed in full and the owner was ordered to pay costs.

by Tahnee Wright Work to expand the stormwater and wastewater network has begun on the Orió and Eurim streets in Alfas de Pi. The Town Council of Alfas del Pi is working to extend the stormwater and wastewater network on the two streets in Albir, an action designed to improve surface drainage conditions and solve flooding issues that occur in heavy rains on the Pegaso, Ondarella and Saturn streets.

On Monday morning, Vicente Arques, mayor of Alfas del Pi, , Toni Such, Councillor of Urbanism, and Óscar Pérez, Head of Technical Services visited the sites together with a representative of Hidraqua, the concession company of the municipal water service.

Specifically, the project will see installation of a separate sewerage network in Orió Street to allow for the evacuation of the rainwater and residual waters. Drainage is also set to be improved at the intersection between the Saturn and Eurim streets with the installation of a 500mm diameter manifold. The Councillor of Urbanism explained ‘this action also improves the evacuation of rainwater in the streets Algol and

Colom, whose scuppers overflow and cause flooding in different plots’.

The works are budgeted to cost 330,000€ and will be financed from the investment fund of the municipal sewerage service. The project will finally complete the renovation of the respective pavements and will end the problems of transverse drainage in the area, where the accumulation of runoff water in heavy rains has caused residents no end of problems.

In recent months, Alfas de Pi Council has launched several projects aimed at improving the collection of rainwater, including improvement works on the Avenida de la País Valencià and plaça Jaume I or on Mitra and Tritó streets in Albir. The works, which started a week ago, are expected to be completed within three months.

Denia councillor steps down

The People's Party of Denia announced the official resignation of councilor Fran Vives last week. Vives has resigned due to personal reasons after suffering a tragic traffic accident last September which killed one of his three sons. He is currently still recovering with his family.

The People’s Party, now chaired by Maria Mut, have shown their full support and appreciation for the work of Vives during the months he was part of the group in the City of Denia. After the resignation, the party announced through its social networks that Isabel Gallego will replace Vives in the City of Denia. Gallego was councilor of the group during the last legislature, heading the departments of Youth and Mayor.

She currently runs her own service company and is part of the Red Cross Local Assembly Denia.

Banks slash property prices Properties located in the center of Denia that previously cost 70,000€ are now worth less than 40,000€.

Banks in the Marina Alta region plan to reduce their stock of empty houses by lowering prices by up to 50%.

Bankia has just reduced the price of 70 properties located throughout the region, especially in Denia, Vergel, Calpe and Pego.

Most are flats in urban centers, although townhouses are also available.

On property portal www.haya.es, where Bankia along with other entities such as Cajamar are marketing their properties, almost 200 houses are listed for sale, with 70 of those having just had their prices slashed.

A large number of the properties up for sale have been repossessed by the banks because their owners could not cope with the mortgage. With this in mind, although there are newer homes built in the 1990s and even at the beginning of this century available, older properties are also offered, built in the 80s, 70s and even the 60s. The main discounts are concentrated in Denia (16), Vergel (12), Calpe (7) and Pego (5).

Houses can also be found below the threshold of 40,000€ in Pego, Vergel, Gata, Pedreguer, Ondara and Teulada. In Calpe, properties are more expensive with most costing around 100,000€ after banks have reduced their prices by 10 to 20%.

Although there are fewer cases, they have also cut the cost of townhouses: there is one in Els Poblets for 121,000€, 5% less than it was before. In Javea, a triplex on Avenida Juan Carlos is up for 186,000€.

Lower prices can also be found in Beniarbeig, Benimeli, Benissa, Castells or Xaló.

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

by Tahnee Wright RTN met with Simon Manley CMG in Benidorm on Friday morning to discuss the challenges faced by ex-pats in Spain in the eyes of Brexit.

It is a busy time for the UK government at the moment as they prepare to submit Article 50 to the European Union (EU) before the end of March.

Once Article 50 is submitted, negotiations will begin between the government and the EU. The Ambassador confirmed his priority in the negotiations is to secure the ‘best possible deal’ for Brits living in Spain and elsewhere in the EU and to ensure such deal is secured ‘as early as possible’.

He says the government has been very clear that a deal is required for both sides of the equation, not only for EU citizens living in the UK but for Brits living across Europe. Clear terms of exit are required along with clarity on the future relationship the UK and Brits alike will have with the European Union.

As the Ambassador talks to Brits across Spain, he is extremely conscious of the uncertainty - people have already

‘taken a hit’, particularly those relying on UK state pensions. He understands people are concerned about important issues such as healthcare and hopes to ease this widespread anxiety by securing a deal as early as possible.

Local Spanish governments, for example in Valencia, have reassured Brits that they are welcomed in Spain, not forseeing any problems post Brexit and the Ambassador believes this is correct. Spanish government is, of course, keen to see Brits continue to live in Spain but also to continue the flow of British tourism. Spain saw almost 18 million British tourists last year, which equates to 1 and a half percent GDP and the Ambassador says ‘this matters enormously’.

In discussing sensationalism in the UK press, the Ambassador understands it can sometimes prove difficult to ascertain what is fact and fiction. He describes the government website (https://www.gov. uk/) as the best ‘one stop shop’ for the latest Brexit updates. What you read on .gov.uk is ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’.

Teulada Moraira and Iberia airlines in advertising partnership

Teulada Moraira has signed an agreement with airline company Iberia to appear in their magazine, which is read every month by two million people in more than 50 countries.

The municipality will feature in the magazine, which is available on all Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum flights as well as in the VIP halls of Madrid airport and in the 57 international airport halls of the Iberia network.

This new action is identified in the Local Tourism Identity Plan 2016 - 2020 as a national and international promotion and follows efforts that took place last year in which promotional material was distributed in the train station Atocha, Madrid as travelers passed through whilst attending the International Tourism Fair.

Carlos Linares, mayor and councilor of Tourism of Teulada Moraira, explained that the objective of this new advertising strategy is to attract more tourists from different countries and reinforce Teulada Moraira as an ideal holiday destination. Describing tourism as the ‘economic engine’ of the municipality, he says that the relevant bodies will work very hard to continue to invest in tourism and promote the municipality, by innovating in new media with which to reach more members of the public.

Linares confirmed that alongside the advertising efforts, large-scale events are being planned to attract tourists as well as encourage the commercial and gastronomic activity of Teulada Moraira.

Valencian Culture Council visit Pedreguer Pedreguer City Council were delighted to play host to the full Valencian Culture Council (CVC) last week.

The CVC regularly organises itinerant sessions with the aim of spreading the work it carries out through the various regions.

The CVC, as the name suggests, is in charge of advising and ruling on matters of culture and heritage to the Generalitat Valenciana and their work therefore depends a lot on cultural policies.

The presence of the CVC in Pedreguer also served to commemorate the third centenary of the birth of the great architect Antoni Gilabert (1716-1792).

It is customary for the CVC to bring about issues with a local hook when visiting the various regions and in this case, its president, Santiago Grisolía, proposed that the Medal of the Consell be awarded to Fundació Server i Pérez of Pedreguer, for his work of patronage in the cultural, sport and science of Valencia . The medal will be awarded shortly at the CVC's headquarters, in the Palau de Forcalló.

Late on Friday night, the City of Denia announced that the Germanor Sopar event scheduled to take place in Torrecremada park on Saturday evening was to be suspended after the strong gales earlier that evening destroyed the event tent, with a worker, Vicent Ivars, 57, being struck by one of the iron rods.

Ivars, who is a member of the Local Fallera Board, was taken to Denia hospital by ambulance after the tent collapsed, unable to withstand the unexpected winds.

He is said to have made his way to his van in search of tools when an initial gust of wind blew sand into his eyes and blinded him, he then crouched down, felt a strong blow on the back and fell to the ground.

Ivars has suffered a broken shoulder blade.

Another worker suffered a blow to the head but without consequences.

The tent itself was completely shattered, with part of it having moved almost forty meters. The force of the wind tore off the asphalt anchors and knocked down tables and chairs that were ready to host 1066 falleros and falleras on Saturday.

by Tahnee Wright A conference to recognise the 30th anniversary of the incorporation of the first woman to the local police in Denia took place at the end of February.

The conference, ‘Integration of women in the bodies of Police Community Valencia’ was attended by Denia Mayor Vicente Grimalt, the Councillor for Citizen Security, Javier Scotto and Equality Councillor Elizabeth Cardona who each spoke in the opening ceremony.

Councillor Scotto explained that the day was aimed to emphasise the importance of women in the local police force.

He recognised that the ratio of women to men in the force has required hard work to balance, both by the force itself and the women police officers, however, numbers still show a lower presence of women in the force than men, with the organisation not yet reaching desired targets.

Equality Councillor Elizabeth Cardona reiterated the words of Scotto, before dedicating a speech to Enriqueta Flocks Faus, the first woman to join Denia Police thirty years ago. She spoke about how Flocks worked with effort, dedication and courage as the first woman in a body of men.

Mayor Grimalt concluded, reflecting on how far the force have come and what next steps should be taken. He con-

firmed that equality in numbers of women and men in the local police force is yet to be one hundred percent effective and the only day it will cease to be a goal, is when it has become and achievement.

After the opening ceremony, the event continued with a round table discussion about the past, present and future of women police officers, with the participation of Enriqueta Flocks herself, now a member of Gandia Police and other local representatives including Angels Navarro, Head of Training Safety and Emergencies (IVASPE) and Stephanie Navarrete, inspector of the Local Police of Valencia.

Three injured in car accident Three people, one of them seriously, were injured in a frontal collision between two vehicles on CV 725, the road to Denia on Tuesday. Local police, civil guards and firefighters were at the scene as the most seriously injured, from Ondara, had to be removed from their vehicle.

He suffered fractures in his arms, legs and possibly hips and was rushed to Denia hospital.

In the second car was a man and a woman whose status as of Tuesday was not serious.

Protest to change Spanish law regarding domestic animals in Benidorm

Last Saturday afternoon saw over 40 protesters congregate outside Benidorm Town Hall to urge the council to review current legislation in regard to stray and feral cats in the area and request support as is given in areas such as Madrid and Vienna.

The protest was arranged by Accion Mascotas (previously Gatami), an entirely volunteer-run organisation that has been providing veterinary care, spaying, fostering and rehoming abandoned cats in Benidorm and the surrounding areas (Altea, La Nucia, Guadalest, Villa Joyosa and more) for over 20 years. In line with current legislation, any member of the public found to be feeding stray or feral cats will receive a fine of 120€. They can also be denounced by a neighbour.

Accion Mascotas has pleaded with the council now for some time, requesting that support is provided as it is in other cities – whereby the council will provide spaces for members of the public to take stray and feral cats aside from shelters and provide funding to have the cats spayed. Cats have been found in the local area baited into traps, some having lost limbs or worse, their lives.

Accion Mascotas desperately require more volunteers – be it to donate food for the cats, provide a foster home or even to give a few hours at the La Nucia car boot sale they attend every Sunday to raise funds. Every little helps and is greatly appreciated by the organisation. The organisation will be attending the Annual Canine Adoption Festival in Albir this Sunday and would love to talk more about what they do with anyone who might like to get involved. Local Police of Benidorm create specific unit against domestic violence

by Tahnee Wright In an announcement that took place at Local Police of Benidorm HQ this Tuesday, alongside the commemoration of the 173rd anniversary of their founding , the body confirmed that they will create a specific unit against domestic violence.

The unit will begin operation imminently and promises to expand coordination with the National Police and give greater attention to victims.

Juan Fuertes, Chief Intendant confirmed that the unit will begin its work once approved at the next Local Security Council meeting, with the Local Security Council being drafted to regulate its operation.

The main objectives of the unit will be to focus on prevention work - preventing new cases of aggression through expanding collaboration the National Police and exchanging and understanding data in regard to cases of abuse.

The mayor explained the unit will ensure enhanced follow up with victims, this issue being of greater concern than ever considering the exponential increase of murders of women by their partners being registered in Spain in the first quarter 2017.

Attendees at the announcement honoured the memory of Maria Laura, who was murdered at the hands of her husband in Benidorm last year.

Data in regard to the number of women

who are currently victims of domestic violence in the city of Benidorm has not been published, however, on a national level, 20 women in Spain have already been slain by their partners in 2017.

The headquarters of the Local Police was the scene of this celebration The announcement also remembered for active or retired officers who have passed away during the past year and recognised the work of all other members of the body.

Toni Pérez, Benidorm’s mayor, presented the Cross of Police Merit to officers Jaime Antonio Martinez Lara, Roque Pérez Garrigós, Norberto Romero Cutillas, Angel González Gómez, Alfonso Ruiz Cuesta, Jose Carlos Chiner Rozalén, Encarna Palomares Sánchez, and Antonio Jesús Diaz Serrano in recognition of their 25 years service in the force.

Also honoured were Francisco Nocete Rodríguez, Luis Sender Lázaro, Manuel Caicedo Guerrero and Roberto Casagrande Serer, four officers who have retired in the last year after almost 40 years in the force.

The sum recovered by the tax inspectors was down 4.98% in comparison to 15.664billion€ raised in 2015, with officials confirming the absence of singular items as the reason.

Benissa municipality finances down 870,000€ New executive attempting to overturn IBI reduction agreement of previous Mayor, Rosello.

by Tahnee Wright Further to Juan Bautista Roselló’s shock resignation after 18 years as Mayor to Benissa in December, Abel Cardona of the left-wing Reiniciem Benissa party is now in place, following a three-party agreement between Reiniciem, PSPV-PSOE and Compromis.

The new executive has found they are held to previous electoral commitments of Rosello and in particular, the generalised reduction of IBI by 20% over 2 years since 2015.

In his 2015 election campaign, Rosello visited to the notary’s office and committed to lowering IBI by 20% in two years. In 2016, the municilpality collected 424,054€ (8%) less than in 2015 and in 2017 the funding pot will decrease by another 445,527€ (8%).

The new executive contacted the Ministry of Finance to try to renege on the committed 8% reduction for 2017 but was met with a negative response.

Finance Councilor Fernando Lopez Corsi of the new executive stresses that whilst they are in favour of lowering taxes, they would prefer to do so in a progressive and less generalised manner, meaning those who are financially better off pay more than those who have less. It will also not reduce taxes at the cost of reducing the provision of services.

The new executive has slammed Rosello for having mortgaged the present and immediate future of the municipality with ‘populist’ and ‘electoralist’ economic measures. Lopez stated that ‘to reduce IBI in a generalised way is not a responsibility; it is an atrocity and one which detracts from the capacity of the consistory to provide services and undertake investments’. Within the current IBI reduction framework,

those who have more real estate are in fact rewarded in comparison to those who have less.

The economic outlook for Benissa this year changes radically and whilst the government team are working on a new budget, it is having to come to terms with having 445,527€ less in finances than last year and the possibility of giving up certain investments.

Bus service between Denia and the Montgo Denia CouncilLors Mari Martinez and Sergio Benito and Councilor for Security and Urban Mobility, Javier Scotto are working on a proposal for a bus service connecting the centre of Denia with the streets of the Montgo. The circular service would run at an hourly frequency and, according to Benito, is being designed to eliminate the need for a car, with a bicycle not being a favourite given the hilly landscape. If plans go ahead, the Councilors will be relying on the Association of Neighbours of the Montgo to spread the word to ensure the service is used regularly. The proposal is expected to come to fruition in a few weeks.

by Tahnee Wright The Association of Golf Courses has promoted the province as a golfing destination for 25 years, managing to ensure its position as one of the best locations in Europe for the practice of golf.

Golf is one of the engines of the provincial tourism industry, generating an economic impact of 440million€, (8% of the income of the province of Alicante) and 7,518 jobs (1.27% of provincial employment).

Following the success of its first promotional event of this year, the Golf Messe in Zurich, the Association of Golf Courses is advancing in its Calendar of Actions of Foreign Promotion for 2017, having recently attend Ferie For Alle, the largest and most important golf fair in Denmark.

Ferie For Alle is the ideal place to promote golfing holiday destinations and the event

celebrated its 20th edition this year with an avalanche of 59,143 visitors who paraded through the Herning Mase Center. Between 24th and 26th February, the center held 1,177 exhibitors from 40 different countries.

Danish golfers are already very present on the Costa Blanca. Visitor numbers are increasing every year with the potential to continue growing. Promoted this year were golf and accommodation offerings in the fields of Alenda, La Finca, Las Ramblas and Villamartín. Meliá Villaitana and Hotel Bonalba were also to be promoted but the respective representatives were trapped by the storm that hit northern Europe at Amsterdam airport and could not reach Denmark.

As per its Calendar of Actions of Foreign Promotion for 2017, the Association will also attend the Helsinki Golf Fair in Finland.

Aqui la Tierra visits Denia again Spanish TV programme Aqui la Tierra (translated as ‘Here the Earth’) returned to Denia this week.

Reporters visited the city last week to find out more about the dry octopus and on Monday they returned to find out more about Denia’s famous red shrimp.

This week, the reporters were at the port ready for the morning arrival of the fishing boats. Here they talked with Mauricio Ripoll, skipper of the Mediterranium and Fran García of the boat Franjumar.

They then enjoyed the action of the auction, sharing secrets with a buyer, Carlos Mañas.

The day ended at restaurant El Faralló , in Les Rotes, where the reporters cooked the red shrimp by the sea with the guidance of Javier Alguacil.

Relief for Marina Alta students The management commission of the University Access Tests (PAU), made up of the Department of Education together with the five Valencian public universities and representatives of the management teams of the secondary schools has agreed that Denia maintains the Selectivity Tribunal, which will prevent more than 400 students in the Marina Alta region from having to travel to the university campuses of Alicante and Elche for tests on the 6th, 7th and 8th of June.

PAU has admitted a plan presented by the City of Denia and the three institutes of the city so that the 400 students in the region affected can carry out the selectivity tests in the IES Historian Chabàs de Denia. The proposal foresees that the students of ESO and 1º of Bachillerato will concentrate on learning that they are required to do outside of this centre between 6th – 8th June and thus free the classrooms for the exams.

In the meeting, those for the decision explained the trip to Alicante or Elche would have ‘serious economic repercussions’ and even ‘psychological and physical’ damage to schoolchildren.

Congress celebrating studies of the Marina Alta

by Tahnee Wright The sixth edition of the Congrés d’Estudis has more than 130 people registered and takes place in Denia, Pedreguer, Javea and Teulada and also includes a visit to Calpe.

The congress, which celebrates studies of the Marina Alta region, began last Friday in the Social Center of Denia and featured a lecture by Professor Ferran Garcia-Oliver and an interpretation of the tenor José Luis Luri. Four towns will host the congress: Denia (3rd and 4th March), Pedreguer (10th March), Javea (11th March) and Teulada (12th March).

Rosa Seser (IECMA) has said that the studies will reflect the archaeological potential of the region and the new studies on tourism and heritage.

The initiative ‘will allow us to catch up on research in the region’ as Seser emphasised, whilst also stressing that the congress ‘is organised to provide a meeting space for all people interested in our culture and our region’.

The upcoming programme is as follows: 10th March: Antoni Banyuls: The walls of Teulada, Benissa and Calpe 11th March: Jesus Eduard Alonso (Contemporary History): Violence, bandellorism and politics in the central regions of the XIX. 12th March: Isabel Mateu (Jardí Botànic de València): The Silene ifacensis, a plant in danger of extinction in the Marina Alta In terms of content, Seser commended the great number of works devoted to archeology: a total of 12 communications and four posters ‘covering a long period of time, from prehistory to the medieval world, which reflect the great archaeological potential of Marina Alta’.

He also mentioned new contributions on tourism and heritage, with one contributor having produced a study on the theme ‘crime of the nineteenth century in the Marina Alta’.

helped to discover and spread’.

Pedreguer cadastral values 27% above market price A study has revealed that the cadastral values of the urban center of Pedreguer are 27% above the market price.

A technical report commissioned by the Council reveals, on the other hand, an undervaluation in the urbanizations and the industrial estate.

In a meeting on Thursday 1st March, a presentation took place to reveal the results of an external technical study that had been commissioned to ascertain the situation of the cadastral values.

The study, carried out between November and February, consisted of determination and comparative analysis of the cadastral values of the Pedreguer houses with respect to their market value.

The study has revealed the inadequacy of the cadastral values in the urban area as well as in the urbanisations and the industrial estate. In the urban area, the cadastral values are well above market value (by 27.34% on average), while in the other areas, the cadastral values are below market value (24.03% in the industrial estate, 17.95% in the Sella, 7.88% in the Monte Pedreguer and 5.69 in the Solana).

According to the author of the study, the inadequacy could be explained by the fact that an incorrect (higher than the corresponding) value was used in the actual presentation of values (from 2007).

The City Council has requested a new paper from the Cadastre, which will only be accepted if it is done correctly and adjusted to current prices.

The City Council stresses that communication will remain transparent throughout the process and to dissipate any doubts or address any concerns, all meetings are open to the attendance of residents.

ALSA offers special rates for Valencia Fallas ALSA have announced they will offer additional seats and special rates between 10th - 19th for travel to and from Valencia for the Fallas celebrations. The company anticipates a large number of trips across the week of Fallas and plans to offer 2,500 seats per day to Valencia from Alicante, Elx, Benidorm, Javea and Denia.

CaixaBank awarded ‘best private bank in Spain’ Bank receives award for the third consecutive year from Euromoney.

CaixaBank’s recognition for the third year in a row comes as a result of a survey conducted by Euromoney between private banking entities, managers of high heritages and family offices around the world, who have identified the best private banking entities for the quality of their services and business model.

CaixaBank Private Banking has grown 18.10% in managed assets in the last three years and now serves 14.36% more customers than in 2014, from 50,085 customers in 2014 to 57,281 at the end of 2016.

In addition to the prize for the best private banking entity, CaixaBank, chaired by Jordi Gual and whose CEO is Gonzalo Gortázar, was recognised as the best entity in nine other categories, three more than in the 2016 edition.

Furthermore, following the EU’s regulatory guidelines, in terms of the number of clients advised (clients who have signed an advisory agreement and a suitability test) the bank has experienced a 22.57% increase in the last three

Guardia Civil intercepts 21,000 units of counterfeit erectile dysfunction pills at Alicante Airport A total of 21,000 pills were found, with a market price value of approximately 210,000€.

Three men have been arrested, a 29-year old Belgian, a 39-year old Spaniard of 39 and a 39-year old man of Chinese origin.

The men, listed as the recipients of these shipments, are residents of Daya Nueva, Sant Vicente del Raspeig and Alicante.

The police are currently investigating whether the act could constitute two criminal offences - both for smuggling and another for infringing public health.

The Guardia Civil warns that the consumption of this type of medication poses a serious health risk, since they are marketed ‘without having been subjected to any type of medical control’. By order of a report issued by the Health Subdelegation of the Government, the pills will be held for examination as there is the possibility they could contain a substance dangerous for human consumption, especially as they are not authorised, outside sanitary control and not intended for a person specifically authorised to sell them.

It is thought the three accused purchased the pills both to sell them illegally and for their own consumption.

New entrepreneur co-working space to open in Javea The City of Hall of Javea are to open a new space for entrepreneurs to co-work, it was announced last Friday. The initiatve, ‘Marina Alta Emprén’ was presented after having been developed to encourage the creation of new companies and their corresponding jobs. The project is designed to meet all the needs of an entrepreneur during their company’s first 8 months of life. In addition to specialised training, entrepreneurs at Marina Alta Emprén will be offered the help of knowledgeable expert mentors and essential business support through various mediums, in order to develop an efficient and sustainable company over time. Marina Alta Emprén is divided into two phases: firstly, incubation of the idea and secondly, development of the project. Any entrepreneur over the age of 18 can apply participate by presenting a project that fits the business requirements of the area. Successful applicants will be able to access personalised training, advice and will have the opportunity to participate in a round of ‘seed capital’ investment schemes to raise funds.

Briton recognised for philanthropic work in Marina Alta British Ambassador to Spain awards Candy Wright a ‘Points of Light’ award.

by Tahnee Wright Candy Wright received a ‘Points of Light’ award from Simon Manley CMG, British Ambassador to Spain at Denia hospital on Friday afternoon.

First established in the US by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, UK Points of Light was developed in partnership with the US programme and launched at 10 Downing Street in April 2014.

The programme recognises, in the Ambassador’s words ‘particularly distinguished Britons’ both in the UK and abroad for their altruistic and public-spirited efforts to help others in their communities.

Candy is well-known across the Marina Alta and describes herself as a ‘happy person who loves to help others’. She has lived in Spain for over forty years and having joined HELP DAMA (Denia and Marina Alta) over thirty years ago, is now President of the charity.

HELP DAMA has been around since 1984 and is run entirely by volunteers. They cover the coastal area of the Marina Alta from Denia in the north to Calpe in the south, providing short term support and assistance to people with medical or other health related needs in a variety of ways. Services currently provided include care provision, charity shops to raise essential funds, an office and equipment store, an activity centre

and hospital help desk support, along with an array of support groups and visiting teams.

At the award giving on Friday, which was well-attended by Candy’s family, fellow volunteers, those she has helped and hospital staff, the Ambassador thanked her for the ‘extraordinary amount of time and life’ she has spent at the hospital and expressed how ‘delighted’ he was to be presenting her with the Points of Light award, with ‘few more distinguished

Calpe lifeguards prepare for the start of the season

Calpe lifeguards are preparing for the start of the season, with service expected to be provided from 13th – 17th April, coinciding with Easter and then resumed from 1st June - 15th October.

Rescue workers from EULEN S.A., a company awarded the contract on the beaches of Calpe, started a training course at the beginning of March that will last the next few weeks and includes swimming and open water practices. The councilor of the beaches, Jan Van Parijs, participated in the beginning of the course and encouraged the first responders to take advantage of the training days in order to provide the best service.

The council of Calpe is keen to ensure special attention is paid to the cleanliness and safety of its beaches and coves. They are therefore not only providing a comprehensive rescue service this summer, with personnel trained to act in emergency situations both on the sand and at sea, but have also promised surveillance which will be provided by the local police on the seafront near the beaches, including a boat that runs along the coast to prevent any boat or jet ski access to the bathing area and ensuring general security along the coast.

City of Altea to pay 1.4million€ in court ruling In compliance with a judgment of the High Court, The City of Altea must pay 1.412million€ to the company, FCC Environment SA. Altea Town Council met last week in a plenary to discuss, amongst other matters, approval of the proposed settlement agreement with FCC Environment.

Pedro Lloret, Councilor of Finance explained that further to the judgment received on 29th November 2016, the city must make payment to FCC Environment in respect of works carried out between 2007 and 2013, being garbage removal and street cleaning.

The plenary approved the proposal on commercial settlement.

Lloret explained that whilst FCC Environment were the contractors of the garbage removal and street cleaning between 1997 and 2007, when the contract ended in 2007, FCC Environment continued to provide the service (and subsequently billing the municipality) until 2013. It was in 2013 that the Public Enterprise took over the contract.

The Councillor went on to say that although it is now difficult to assess the economic impact of this inaction, the first question asked should be as to why the council did not take action when the expiration of the contract with FCC Environment was nearing.

An expensive case of negligence, the original claim was for over 2million€, meaning the city has saved more than 500,000€. The settlement payment will be made following receipt of a loan to the city, after the council’s request last year to join the Economic Promotion Fund of the State to make the payments was rejected.

In total, 50 singers will be chosen to participate in the performances that will take place on 23rd and 24th March. Following these performances, the jury will decide the 20 finalist candidates that will perform on 25th March. The chosen winner on the 25th will receive a direct pass to the last casting phase of The Voice.

The contest is aimed at adult singers, soloists or duets living in Spain.

Day of the Red Cross Banner celebration In Denia on Saturday This Saturday, solidarity will take to the streets for the celebration of the Day of the Red Cross Banner (Dia de la Banderita). The event is traditionally celebrated in December but had to be postponed in 2016 due to bad weather conditions in Denia.

25 local associations including The Rotary Club, Club Kite Surf and Euro Club Denia are collaborating with the Red Cross in organising activities for all of the family to enjoy.

The money raised on Saturday will go to the projects of the Red Cross Youth, which focus on children in hospital, reinforcement in schools, toy giving and toy libraries, as explained by director of Red Cross Youth, Tamara Núñez.

The programme starts in the morning at 10.00am with a performance from the Russian Cultural Mosaic Association, who will put their own twist on the classic favourite, Cinderella. At 10.30am, make way for the House of Andalusia, with the participation of dance groups of all ages and a choir. At 11.15am the group The 3 Music will arrive before the performance ends with the swing dancers of Spirit of St Louis Marina Alta.

There will be bouncy castles and children’s activities next to the stage, located at the end of Calle Marqués de Campo and celebrations will continue throughout the day.

Red Cross Denia is currently exploring the possibility of moving the Day of the Red Cross Banner to October, and the campaign Tú Vales for 100, usually held at Christmas, to the months of July and August.

Calpe shops celebrate Father’s Day Father’s Day in Spain falls earlier than its English equivalent (that takes place in June), on Sunday 17th March.

Calpe shops are taking part an initiative focusing on the Father’s Day, with the motto ‘Papa Me Enamora’, which offers the opportunity to win various prizes at local shops belonging to the campaign between March 1st and 31st.

To participate, shoppers must make purchases for a minimum value of 20€ and staple the receipt to an entry form. More than 200 ballot deposit boxes have been distributed among local businesses.

Prizes on offer include a one-night stay in a hotel, a dinner at Andalusia restaurant and 100€ in shopping vouchers.

New walking and cycling routes in Altea On Sunday 26th February, over 70 people congregated to celebrate ‘Paths of Altea’, the launch of various walking and cycling routes to the rural districts of Altea.

Most participants took to the routes on foot whilst some opted to cycle.

Councillor for Tourism, Anna Alvado expressed thanks to all participants and explained that throughout the day, they passed along the green corridor the runs along the old Camino Real del Mar, stopping at various points en route such as the old olive tree in Cap Negret (declared a ‘monumental tree’!), the Shrine of St. Thomas and the volcanic area of Cap Negret and Carabineros amongst others.

The Mayor encouraged participants to enjoy the remaining routes, saying ‘the effort to move these projects forward is worthwhile when you see such a positive response’.

Altea hosts Taekwon-do celebration On Saturday 25th February, Altea hosted the celebration of the Championship of the Valencian Community 2017 in Tatami Sport and Taekwon-do Traditional ITF. The Municipal Hall of Altea was filled with over 275 competitors of different categories, 100 of whom became eligible for team selection to represent the Federation of Kick Boxing and Valencia in the next Spanish championships Peter Barber, Councillor for Sports expressed his thanks to all involved in the event. Organisers thanked the council for their involvement in providing the facilities and of course, the medical staff and staff of the sports department who were on hand throughout the day.

Villajoyosa develops a local burn plan

by Tahnee Wright VillaJoyosa develops a local burn plan to protect its mountains. The Department of Environment at the Town Council of La Vila Joyosa has developed the’ Local Plan of Burns’, which aims to protect the mountains and natural environment of the municipality against forest fires and which will be approved in the next plenary.

This plan has been prepared following the guidelines set by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development and with the consensus of the Municipal Agrarian Council.

The document regulates activities that require fire within its scope of application, which is the entire municipality of La Vila Joyosa. These activities include agricultural burnings, forest fires, livestock or hunting, bonfires in camping or recreational areas and remains of gardening and pyrotechnics.

Burning may take place: 16th October – 31st May, between sunrise and 11am. Monday to Saturday only.

1st June – 15th October, on the first and third Wednesdays of June, July, August and Sep-

tember and the first Wednesday of October until 10am.

1st June – 15th October, burning is prohibited between these dates except in correspondence with the dates and times aforementioned.

The plan prohibits ignition of fires, barbecues or paellas in the municipal area, aside from in zones conditioned for it. Individuals can deposit the remains of gardening at the municipal Ecopark. The Conselleria will hold the authority required to authorise forest fires, cattle, hunting and cañeras.

All persons authorised to carry out fires must follow the regulations of this plan, which directs that the fire should be monitored until it is extinguished. The fire area should be conditioned thereafter by cleaning of scrub and scrubland. All agricultural fires should take place at a distance of at least 50 meters from the forest or forest vegetation, except those burned in summer that should take place at a distance of 200 meters.

Fires will not be authorised by the City Council, requests should be made to the Conselleria.

Painting contest in Pego The city of Pego, in order to promote the arts, has announced its XLI Painting Contest ‘Pego town’. The deadline for submitting works will remain open until 28th April at 1pm. More info is available on the Ajuntament website www.pego.org.

Guided nature walk in l'Alfàs del Pi Explore l'Alfàs del Pi’s unique collection of trees.

by Tahnee Wright The town council of l'Alfàs del Pi is inviting all residents and neighbours of the municipality on a guided walk this Sunday, exploring their unique collection of trees.

With the imminent arrival of spring, nature returns to put on an extraordinary show and the council of environment of the town hall of l'Alfàs del Pi invites all residents and neighbours to join them on a specially designed route visiting half a dozen trees. l'Alfàs del Pi has one of the most extensive and best preserved catalogues of unique trees in the province. A natural treasure that is still unknown to many of its residents and neighbours, with specimens scattered throughout the entire municipality.

The walk will leave from the House of Culture and walkers will go on to visit the pine of the Plaza Mayor, the tree that gives name to the municipality.

The top tree on the list being the impressive carob tree of Foia Brell - the tree that has been around longer than the Comunitat Valenciana at an age of almost 800 years.

The walk will begin at 10.30am on Sunday and will last for approximately three hours. All participants will receive water and a piece of fruit on arrival and those who complete it in full will be able to replenish their energy with a small lunch that will be offered free of charge in the municipal sports centre, where the route ends.

Dani Vaello leaves Pego for personal reasons The club, led by Moratal is looking for a new goalkeeper following Vaello’s departure.

Vaello has been a key player, starting in almost all of Pego’s games since he joined the club. However, he recently decided to leave the club for personal reasons. Alex Llido is standing in as temporary goalkeeper. The resignation comes at a bad time for Pego, who are right now position number 14 of the table and only four points down.

Javea U3A member in Seville to San Sebastian cycle Javea U3A member Peter Atkinson recently gave a talk to members entitled ‘A Traveller’s Tale of Woe and Joy: Across France on a Bicycle … and Three Cities Beginning with S’ at the Casa de Cultura in the Paeblo.

The ‘beautifully illustrated’ presentation told the story of the U3A’s History Group leader’s trip from Seville via Salamanca to San Sebastian, which wasn’t without a glitch here and there… not only did Peter’s bag go missing but he was Peter Atkinson, centre, with Travellers’ Tales group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie hit by a reversing car whilst resulted in him being treated in hospital and interviewed by the French police.

Changes at U3A Vall del Pop The U3A Vall del Pop held their Annual General Meeting on 2nd March at the Polivalent Centre in Murla, where their new committee for 2017 was elected.

The Members Representative position appointment is currently pending.

Charity auction raises over 775€ for local charities and support groups

85th Birthday greetings to U3A Vall del Pop member At their meeting on Thursday 2nd March, the committee and members of the U3A Vall del Pop extended hearty 85th birthday greetings to John Chilcott and offered their thanks for his lead in establishing hill walking as one of the group´s most popular activities. John has been an active member of the U3A Vall del Pop since its establishment 10 years ago.

Until January this year, John was the leader of the Friday Walking Group, who each week walked a different part of the beautiful countryside and hills along the Costa Blanca region. They spent the day in the fresh air and sunshine, enjoyed terrific views and sights and rounded off the day at a pre-selected taverna.

Although the Friday walks are no longer the group still have weekly walking groups on Wednesday - half day finishing with coffee, and Thursday - full day with your own packed lunch and finishing at a wine bar or taverna.

by Tahnee Wright The Rotary International Fellowship of the Costa Blanca North held their annual auction on Friday 3rd March, raising over €775 for local charities and support groups.

Auctioneer Martin Bentley, aided and supported by a volunteer team of collectors and storage providers, brought his hammer down on an incredible number of goods ranging from household, electrical, leisure, hobby and entertainment.

Items included a top of the range laptop and printer, a flat screen TV, some quality wines with various gadgets to store, cool and open them and an ice crusher. A floor

polisher, sewing machine, telescopic fishing equipment, bicycles and a garden hammock, not to mention an Elvis Presley clock with the ‘king’ performing on the hour and a timer to keep him quiet at night!

In thanking all the donors, purchasers and the team who had collected and assembled the sale items, President Andrew Johnson said that any unsold items would now be passed on to a local charity shop.

La Trobada d'Escoles in Vergel this month Vergel once again hosts the great festival of public education on 10th and 25th March.

by Tahnee Wright La Trobada d'Escoles (The Trobada) has gone from being a festival of schools to one of families, with something for all members of the household to get involved in.

This evening, Friday 10th March will play host to a presentation by the Mayor of Vergel, Ximo Coll, followed by a concert in which Pep Gimeno 'Botifarra' and the Vergel band will perform together at the Plaza de l'Ajuntament.

The main Trobada celebration takes place on 25th March and will feature the classic cercavila of the schools of the region, beginning outside the Segària school and ending outside the city council offices.

There will also be four exhibitions taking place, announced by the Councilor for Culture, Lluïsa Miralles: two from IES Number 3 of Denia on floristry and drones, one from IES Xebic of Ondara on Women's Day posters and the largest, which has been possible thanks to the collaboration of Vergel neighbours, a collection of images of both old and modern buildings, to show the architectural evolution of the town, which

New musical group on the block

152 was founded at the end of 2016 and claims to bring something different to the local music scene. This group’s rather mundane name is part of its goal, to make sure the focus is on the composers and their music, in their terms ‘The Real Rock Stars’.

152's core membership was formed from the Alicante Chamber Choir, Contrapunctum, which is constantly growing with local professional musicians from the area. John Edwards, 152's bass soloist said, ‘It has been so satisfying to work with such professional musicians who can understand the importance of the amazing composers we are working with’. 152's first performance ‘Walk in the Way of Faith’ is a Baroque concert. It is at 8pm on Wednesday 15th March at the Salón de Actos de la Facultad de Educación at Alicante University.

The programme includes Bach Cantata 152 ‘Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn’ and Purcell Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary as well as Baroque solos and instrumental music from both composers.

What’s on at Albir Church of England Last Friday played host to the World Day of Prayer service at the church, led by Elaine Mitchell with a congregation of 44. Typical refreshments from the Philippines were served afterwards in recognition of this worldwide service which takes place on the first Friday of March every year.

The first Sunday in Lent played host to a service led by Fr Ray Andrews, focusing on Lent. With a congregation of 35, the church is a happy, growing church. With the first Sunday of the month being ‘Social Sunday’ 15 people also enjoyed a soup lunch after the service. Special services are coming up on Palm Sunday - April 9th at 9.45am, Good Friday - April 14th at 11.00am and of course on Easter Sunday - April 16th at 9.45 am.

A service of Holy Communion is held in Albir every Sunday at 9.45am.

As we shuffle to the front of the queue in God’s waiting room, we are lectured by the ‘experts’ that we should be taking extra steps to look after ourselves. More exercise, watching what we eat and keeping our alcohol intake down - preferably quitting the habit completely.

While we struggle to put all this into practice, and fall miserably short most of the time, the theory is turned on its head when you look at Sir Michael Jagger and the gang.

Now I don’t know for sure, but it doesn’t seem to me that any of them have bothered themselves much with artificial aids such as plastic surgery or hair transplants.

Let’s be honest, Keith Richards has a face that resembles a satellite photograph of the Amazon delta. It’s a lived-in face that’s for sure, but by who or what is another question.

And you know what? He couldn’t care less, and that’s why we love him.

You don’t see paunches or flabby limbs on any of the boys either.

Okay Micky boy still prances around the stage like a whippet on speed and there is less meat on his frame than on a vegetarian’s toothpick. But the others merely pass the time by twanging a few guitar strings or bashing the drums, and yet still have the figures that are not far removed from those they sported in those mind blowing 60’s days Remember, these guys have been rocking around the globe for half a century, have a combined age of 290 and if reports are correct, spent years smoking suspicious substances, knocking back whole distilleries whilst defying convention and simply laughing in the face of mortality.

So I ask myself this: should I refuse that extra roast potato and another glass of Rioja in the dubious hope that I will live a little longer, or should I say to hell with it and take my chances with smile on my face?

What do you know about your neighbours?

‘Yes, that Mr Smith does seem very nice, doesn’t he? Handsome, oh yes. Athletic…mmmm. And that blond hair is to die for! Clearly loves gardening because he’s always out there toiling away amongst the cucumbers. The only thing is he does keep himself to himself, doesn’t he? And he keeps those hedges around his place very high, too high in my opinion. Seems a lovely man though.’

That, believe it or not is part of a conversation I overheard between two British expatriate women on a bus in Javea just a few months ago. It could not have occurred to them that the man they were talking about was one of the many dangerous British criminals who, over the last few years, have fled to Spain, and in particular to the Mediterranean Costas, hoping to escape the long arm of the British law. For a long time now the British media have conducted campaigns to help expatriates identify these fugitives on the run who are doing everything in their power to be one of us, respected members of a community who are about as far away from our values as Donald Trump is today. They are the bad boys of society who want to hide out amongst us, to be like us, dress like us in our Costa shorts, and talk like us be it with a Northern twang or a plum in the mouth. But they are nothing like us, not in any way at all. Amongst them are fraudsters, drug ring leaders, child pornographers, a thug who is accused of murdering a fellow drinker in a pub brawl, and a particularly unsavoury character who paralyzed a victim in a machete attack. Then at the last count a woman fraudster is amongst them.

So what are we going to do to stop these fugitives from the law turning the coast we love so much into the ‘Costa del Crime’? How can we route them out? Well the first thing is to use our eyes. Observe. Don’t be nervous of being suspicious. Some of the greatest criminals in the world have been caught on a whim including that notorious Victorian murderer Dr. Crippen.

Disguise. Some Costa fugitives opt for ways of making their appearance so different that they convince themselves that they could never be recognized when in a crowd or out shopping, a false moustache here, a wig, bizarre make-up. One female friend of mine told me that she was very impressed by how well groomed her new neighbour in the rented villa next door turned out to be, and how feminine she spoke. But her suspicions were alerted when the young woman turned around and walked away to reveal thick black hair on the back of her legs which appeared to be the only exposed part of her body that had not been shaved! However, when my friend called the Guardia to air her suspicions, the half-shaven neighbour had disappeared without trace.

So remember, my friends, these thugs and murders are out there some where amongst us, and its up to us to get to them before they again escape the justice they deserve.

But be warned. They’re cunning and dangerous. They’re also convinced of their invincibility, that they will always know best what to do in a tight situation. It’s up to us to prove how wrong they can be.

An American pundit says he cannot win; “Before the elections I was called a racist bigot for criticising the President. I am now a racist bigot for supporting the President.”

We are living in the Age of Hypocrisy so get used to it; stuff happens. But, let us not to be too quick to smirk. Things are more surrealistic in Goldman Sachs Occupied Europe (GSOE).

Whilst we are pre-occupied by lurid press reports of an aggressive and expansionist Russia our minds are taken off the aggressive and expansionist Third World

currently invading the European Union.

EU industrialists and its agricultural sector pray for an end to anti-Russian sanctions. Meanwhile, their smirking counterparts in Vladimir Putin’s Russia pray for the economic blockade being continued. As a consequence of the trade embargo Russia has become richer and more self-sufficient.

Such is the arrogance of the EU’s un-elected political elite that Brussels cannot concede that their sanctions strategy has failed. In fact it has been such an epic fail I wouldn’t be surprised if EU Commissioners were in

Terrible roads I am moaning about the lack of infrastructure in Spain. The motorways/auto routes are superb as a lot of EU money has been given to Spain but locally our roads are terrible. The amount of tyres we go through because of holes in the road is ridiculous.

There is no drainage so when it rains heavily places get flooded and roads are washed away. Areas that used to soak up the water have been built on due to pure greed. The councils just don’t seem to invest back into the community, instead the money collected from me in taxes is blown up – literally – by stunning firework displays that even Disney would be proud of. I am not complaining about the firework display though.

I am an expat living in Spain and have done for the last 15 years. I am starting to get fed up with the Spanish way of living and their supermarkets and shops. When I go back to the UK I notice sales or discounts. When I go shopping in Spain, despite a so-called recession I don’t see shops dropping the prices, I don’t see special offers, I don’t see much evidence of competition between retailers. In my local supermarket when food goes out of date they don’t slash the price, instead it stays on the shelf and so you have to be careful what you are buying. The amount of times I have brought meat from my local big named Spanish supermarket and got home only to realize once opened that the meat is smelling and has gone off. I then check the sell by date and it only has a day to go. Are they allowed to do this and how do we go about sorting this problem out?

What I don’t understand in Spain is when I go into a shop and I am waiting in the queue while the assistant chats away to their friend or relative totally ignoring me and everyone else.

The supermarket has a big long queue with customers waiting patiently to buy their weekly shop or just popped in to buy bread and there is one person on the counter while if you look around the supermarket there are four or five other people stacking shelves or doing something else. Why is that? It takes a good few moments for someone to realize after hearing a few moans and groans from bored and fed up customers for them to call someone else for help.

Another Trump tweet send stocks down again Pharma stocks down with new tweet on drug prices.

President Donald Trump threw himself back into the debate over drug pricing on Tuesday, sending pharmaceutical stocks down again with a tweet promising to lower medicine costs in America.

In a tweet shortly before 9.00am New York time, Trump claimed he is working on a ‘new system where there will be competition in the drug industry’.

Mylan NV, the maker of the EpiPen allergy shot that was at the center of the public outrage over drug prices last year, declined 1.5 percent, while Perrigo Co. dropped 2.5 percent and Allergan Plc fell 1.5 percent.

Trump tweeted the morning after House Republicans unveiled their much anticipated legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act late Monday, which he also lauded on Tuesday, adding that competition will come later in the health-care rollout.

‘We are intrigued by the timing of President Trump’s tweet this morning as it followed rapidly behind the House healthcare reform bill and we believe shows the administration’s continued focus on drug pricing’ said Vamil Divan, an analyst at Credit Suisse AG, in a note to clients.

The 25-member Standard & Poor’s 500 Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology & Life Sciences Index dropped as much as 1.3 percent, the most since 11th January,

when Trump said the pharmaceutical industry is ‘getting away with murder’.

The president has promised to lower drug costs several times and threatened to use the government’s buying power to force prices down, but so far has not unveiled any specifics about how he plans to do so.

The Tuesday tweet left analysts struggling to figure out what the president meant, especially as Trump has alluded to bidding in the past. Unlike most countries in the world, the U.S. doesn’t directly regulate

medicine prices, and drugmakers have strongly resisted it.

Drugmakers are under maximum pressure to come up with ways to reduce prices amid outcry from members of Congress and U.S. customers. Some companies, including Allergan and Swiss giant Novartis AG, have responded with voluntary actions to cap price increases whilst Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co. have taken measures to increase transparency about their prices.

U.S. buyout fund to purchase Madrid-based Allfunds Bank SA

U.S. buyout fund Hellman & Friedman is nearing a deal to buy Madrid-based mutual fund platform Allfunds Bank SA, after beating bids from rival private equity bidders, Bloomberg reported, citing representatives involved with the matter.

The deal, valuing Allfunds Bank at about 1.8 billion € ($1.90 billion), could be announced as soon as this week, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Established in 2000 to provide access to so-called open architecture investment funds market, Allfunds has more than 200billion€ of assets under management.

Allfunds Bank is owned 50% by Santander Asset Management and 50% by Intesa Sanpaolo Spa. Hellman & Friedman are rumored to have beaten a last-minute counterbid from private equity firm Permira.

Chinese investment firm Legend Holdings Corp and three groups of private equity funds were putting the finishing touches to rival bids for Allfunds Bank, Reuters reported in February.

I do not get on with my daughter’s husband and he is making it more and more difficult for me to spend time with my grandchildren. What can I do? Is there a law in Spain that allows me to see them?

I am sorry to hear about your predicament, however you will be pleased to know that there is a law in Spain that allows you the freedom to see your grandchildren. Basically in Spain you have the legal right to see your grandchildren.

This right is stated in the Spanish Civil Code and it applies to grandparents, siblings, and other relatives of minors.

In cases where parents or guardians do not allow grandparents to see their grandchildren, the grandparents have

the right to request visitation rights through the Spanish Courts.

What is the procedure, how do I go about getting these visitation rights?

You must file a petition with the District Spanish Court stating the reasons that you cannot see your grandchildren.

You will need a Spanish lawyer, a court runner, and a translator if you do not speak Spanish.

What happens next?

The Judge will consider the testimony of all parties involved including the mother, father, grandparents and any other appropriate witnesses, all of them cross-examined at the day of the hearing.

Are the grandparents always given visitation rights?

Normally yes. This is a family bond which is proven to be beneficial to grandparents and grandchildren, and the Judge always seeks what is best for a child´s interest. The type of visits will depend on the age of the child and where grandparents reside in Spain.

In the case that a visitation is denied by the Judge, you have the option to appeal the sentence through the High Court.

A few quick tip-bits about myself to get us started.

I have been living in Benidorm for the last 10 years, having tried my hand at many things from karaoke host to Radio presenter I finally found my true place in this wonderful and diverse seaside town! I currently manage a fabulous bar in the Old Town, called Sensations, and guest DJ at People’s Night Club. L’Alfàs hosts its third Canine and Adoption Festival

Last year’s festival was a huge success

The Francisco Saval García Golf and Cricket Field will play host to the third Canine and Adoption Festival this Sunday, 12th March.

The event is organised by the Association of Pet Owners of l'Alfàs del Pi (APPA), in collaboration with the Department of Health and its main objective is to provide new homes to the dogs and cats that live in local shelters.

Last year, nearly a thousand people attended the event, which Vanessa Pareja, president of APPA, says shows ‘a greater degree of awareness about the importance of caring for our pets and not abandoning them’.

‘This year, the participation of associations and animal shelters is doubled, extending the scope of action to the whole province’ said Pareja.

The event was born with the aim of promoting the adoption of domestic animals that are looking for new homes. Data shows that thanks to the festival, more than twenty dogs and cats have managed to find a new home in the last two years.

Mayor Marisa Cortés from the Department of Health wants to thank the families who choose to adopt dogs and cats and also appeal to all citizens in the struggle against mistreatment and animal abandonment.

The festival will have interesting lots of interesting activities to get involved in, from dog beauty contests, to exercise/ agility demonstrations.

Thanks to the contribution of some over twenty local businesses and establishments, a charity raffle will be organized.

There will be a bar service and a variety of associations, shelters and companies related to the animal world will hold stands to promote their activities and services.

Both APPA and the Department of Health of l'Alfàs encourage all citizens of the Marina Baixa to come along on Sunday from 10am to 3.30pm and show their support.

Javea Players 'Sand Castles' in-the-Round William and Margaret Patterson are a relatively elderly couple who have holidayed in the same place for years, and own their own beach hut. They await, without much enthusiasm, the annual arrival of the awful Billet family, whilst wondering also what has happened to the Woodersons who haven’t been seen for a few years. This gentle comedy will appeal to all, and we will readily identify with the characters and have a good laugh at their predicaments.

St Patrick’s Day Festival – Moraira SOME OF the local bars in Moraira have got together to organise a St. Patrick’s Day Festival on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th March, which will take place on the stage in front of the Prime Hops Bar, Church Square, Moraira.

The Brink Band Jam Sessions FOR THE past five years The Brink Band have been rocking Monday nights with their Jam Sessions at Bar La Cabana (formally Café del Mar), Cala Andragó, Moraira. Footlights 2nd Annual Spring Fair

The Footlights cast

On Saturday 25th March at 12pm, Footlights will be holding their 2nd Annual Spring Fair to raise funds for the Calpe performing society.

Footlights are a Calpe based musical theatre group, established for 12 years, performing full scale stage productions of popular West End and Broadway musicals. Following the success of last year's event, Footlights have decided to keep the same format and will be offering hot and cold drinks with a slice of homemade cake, a tombola and plenty of stalls.

After a year of major change within the group, Footlights are looking for new members for both on and off stage roles. This event will provide a great opportunity for interested parties to meet the members and committee and find out more about the exciting programme that Footlights have planned for 2017.

The event will be held at Footlights Centre, Calle Hidalgo, Calpe from 12pm until 5pm.

Can healthy eating be harmful?

Condition has detrimental mental and physical effects.

Carb-cutting, protein packing diets are everywhere to be seen nowadays – promoted on television, social media and in shops. It is not surprising that a rising number of people are becoming obsessed with counting calories and developing a condition called orthorexia.

Orthorexia nervosa is a term derived from the Greek word for ‘correct’ which sees sufferers, particularly women in their 30s, fixate on ‘health foods’, abiding by strict rules as they eliminate less healthy options from their diets such as sweets and carbohydrates.

Experts have warned orthorexia can lead to severe weight loss, malnutrition and depression, impacting the sufferer mentally as well as physically as they become profoundly obsessed with what they are eating.

The disorder was named by Dr Steven Bratman in a 1997 paper in which he said sufferers could be driven to despair by unintentionally ‘devouring a single raisin’.

Orthorexia, unlike bulimia and anorexia, is not currently included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders which doctors use to diagnose mental illness in the US, nor is it included in the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Disease,

Have you heard about Lupus?

Largely unheard of disease affects 40,000 in Spain alone.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease and can be potentially fatal. Its origin is unknown but it is characterised by a multitude of symptoms, manifesting differently over the life of the patient.

Any part of the body can be affected by lupus as it has an array of clinical manifestations affecting the skin, joints, brain, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels and other internal organs.

Epidemiological studies suggest that 1 in 2,000 people have some form or another of systemic lupus.

It is estimated that around 40,000 people in Spain suffer from lupus. More than 90% of lupus sufferers are women and

it is most common between the ages of 15 to 45.

Lupus causes the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs.

Under normal function, the immune system makes proteins called antibodies in order to protect and fight against antigens such as viruses and bacteria.

Lupus results from both genetic and environmental stimuli. Risk factors include exposure to sunlight, certain

prescription medications, infection with Epstein-Barr virus, and exposure to certain chemicals. Environmental factors include extreme stress, exposure to ultraviolet light, smoking, some medications and antibiotics, infections and the Epstein-Barr virus (in children).

Although there is no cure, lupus and its symptoms can be controlled with medication. Treatments for Lupus include corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs and lifestyle changes.

Make your own hanging ‘kokedama’ The Japanese horticultural fashion taking Spain by storm.

A kokedama is a style of Japanese bonsai, where a plant’s root system is simply wrapped in moss and bound with string, transforming it into a sculptural art form. Loosely translated, ‘koke’ means moss and ‘dama’ means ball.

Becoming increasingly popular in Spain, they are perfect for exteriors and look great hung on balconies and terraces, but they can also be kept in perfect condition inside the house.

Follow this step-by-step guide to make your own: The materials you will need are: a small plant of your choice, some moss, clay, string or rope and a special substrate for bonsais (akedama).

To successfully make your own plant you will need to: 1. Make a compact substrate ball by mixing ¾ of moss and ¼ akadama. Add some river sand to make it stick better if required.

2. Make a small hole in the ball and insert the roots of your plant.

3. Reinforce it by tying any rope or string of your choice around the ball and start making knots around it.

4. Cut small bits of moss and put them around the ball, holding them in place with the string.

The kokedama is easily kept alive by watering it a little when you see the moss getting dry. Avoid exposing it to too much sunlight or strong currents of air.

DIY first aid for damaged door frames Door frames are easily damaged.

Moving furniture, pets, slamming doors or simply the pass of time can easily cause annoying splits, chips and cracks.

Whilst it is possible to get your doorframes looking as good as new again, they must be first examined to ascertain whether the damage is superficial or goes deeper.

If superficial, great news! Frames can be sanded down, cleaned and repainted or varnished. If required, a small amount of wood putty can be used to fill in gouges before sanding down and painting.

Putty comes in the form of a soft, malleable greyish-yellow paste and is made from ground chalk and raw linseed oil. It hardens after a few hours and is essential if deeper gouges or cracks are found.

First of all surround the area with protective tape. Then apply the putty, angling the spatula at 45 degrees and press the putty into the crack or gash. Once the product has filled the gap to surface level, soak your fingers in water or hand cream (check product labels first for advice) before using them to press into the gap. Once finished, remove the protective tape and leave to dry for 24 to 48 hours. Once the area is completely dry, sand gently before painting.

If damage appears to be more serious and the frame needs changing, contact a carpenter.

Green fingered locals offered allotments in Javea

With the implementation of municipal ‘urban orchards’, the City Council of Javea is offering residents the opportunity to harvest their own vegetables, whilst at the same time converting empty land and improving the environmental quality of the municipality.

11 of the orchard plots located next to the school Trenc d’Alba have been allocated recently, with 24 left vacant. Of the eleven allocated, eight were allocated to individuals, two to the students of the neighbouring school and one to the users of the TAPIS occupational workshop.

Applications will soon be open for those interested in taking on one of the 24 vacant plots. To apply, you must be registered in Javea and be unemployed or retired.

Councillor Doris Courcelles has pointed out that in this new stage of development and further to abuses found in the previous stage of development by contractors, individual water consumption counters have been installed and the consumption of water will be charged to individuals.

China is leading the way in facial recognition software. Baidu, which runs China’s most popular search engine claims a 99% accuracy rate that now allows for “Face Payments”. Forget flashing your credit card, just smile at the camera and you can purchase rail tickets, enter apartment and office buildings, even grab your favourite Capuchino in participating venues!

Another company Face++ is already integrated into various apps.

Alipay, is used by 120,000.000 people in China and now accepts facial payment. Didi, a Uber taxi type company uses the system to verify the driver is a legitimate employee. Wether this technology transfers well to European cultures is a different matter as privacy is taken more seriously here, and the idea of our mugshots being stored in giant databases that could possibly be accessed by government or hackers, may not be as appealing as the benefits offered by facial recognition.

The series “Person of Interest” is based on an all seeing, facial recognition super computer hooked up to all CCTV systems. Do we really want to be tracked like this? Time will tell in our ever growing gadget based society.

Take a hike!

A team of engineers from Agility Robotics, an offshoot of the Oregon State University engineering program, built a cool two-legged robot that can walk by itself. The robot, nicknamed Cassie, could someday be used in dangerous search-and-rescue missions or package delivery.

Cassie is the successor to the team’s previous robot, ATRIAS. ATRIAS was developed about two years ago as a DARPA-funded project meant to make walking robots more efficient. ATRIAS could walk at a little over 3 mph and could move forward and backward, as well as uphill and downhill. The robot could balance itself and remain upright when pushed.

However, the design was somewhat clunky. The robot could only stand upright by shifting its weight from foot to foot, for instance. To fix these problems, the team developed Cassie, which is a smaller but more efficient version. Cassie features additional motors to enable standing in place and crouching, as well as a more efficient design.

The end result is a robot that’s about half the size as ATRIAS but much more powerful. The robot can stand and walk on uneven terrain, fall down without breaking, and is water resistant.

The company hopes their design will be used in search-and-rescue operations where sending a human is too dangerous, and in package delivery. The company envisions a fleet of autonomous vehicles to drive the mail to your address and a walking robot to bring that mail to your doorstep.

motoring The new 2017 Range Rover Velar announced The Velar is Land Rovers newset addition to it’s lineup and is pitched against the Porche Macan and the BMW X6 Showing at the Geneva Motor Show and due to be in showrooms for early summer, the newly styled body is set to be it’s new coupe model. Said to be every bit as spacious as the Macan and the Jaguar F-Pace this could prove to be a very popular model.

Benitachell Bowls Club hosts Winter Rinks final On Saturday 4th March,the final game of the Annual Winter Rinks competition was held at Benitatchell Bowls Club. With two Benitachell teams in the running to win, the Mavericks managed keep ahead against Great Expectation and won with a shot difference of 5. Third place went to The Invaders team, playing for Javea Green Bowls Club. Prizes were presented by Viv from Direckt Optic and Eleanor and George from Prudential.

The weather was cold and breezy but it didn’t dampen spirits, with the game being well attended by many spectators including bowlers from other clubs. After the game, 89 competitors and spectators alike enjoyed a delicious tapas meal which was enjoyed by all.

Benitachell Bowls Club is the only independent club on the Costa Blanca and is owned and run by the members themselves through a board of directors and the Club Captain, all of whom are responsible for the day-to-day running of the club.

The club was opened on 20th June 1988 with some 150 titleholders (not all bowlers) and just two annual members. The club has gone from strength to strength over the last 26 years and currently has a bowling membership of just fewer than 200, comprising of titleholders, annual and temporary members.

The club has 8 rinks, all of which are synthetic surfaced and is open 7 days a week for members to practice their skills and play in a variety of competitions, both ‘in house’ and open events.
