Works are well and truly underway throughout Calpe this week. The building of the Cultural and Lesiure park in the Gargasindi game has been initiated and the adaptation and improvement of the parks of Enginent and Garrofers continues.

The Cultural and Lesiure park project covers a 12,000 square meter plot in front of the Silene de Ifac Children’s School and was formed following plans drafted by the municipal architect. The park facilities will be available for use by all local associations and the objective is to reduce event and celebration costs.

Perfect for concerts and performances, a concrete, fully equipped open-air stage is being installed complete with anchors for covers should they be required. Other facilities will include play areas and toilets, along with tents for the celebrations, for example, of the Beer Festival, the Day of the Quintas or the House of Andalusia.

The initiative has received a grant from the Provincial Council of €240,000 and is sure to provide an excellent event environment for all.

Road open or closed?

by Andy Mansell Chaos, uncertainty and a healthy dose of confusion surround the ongoing roadworks on the Altea to Albir coastal road adjacent to the small roundabout at Cap Blanc.

A large section of the road heading in a Northerly direction towards Altea collapsed into the sea during the January storms, forcing local authorities and Police to close the road completely to all vehicles whilst the damage was assessed.

Traffic was directed onto the main N332 trunk road, causing severe tailbacks in both directions and on artery roads adjoining the busy road.

After the initial inspection and clean up, evidently, although some major rebuilding was required on the Northerly section, the road heading South was safe for motorists to use.

Almost six weeks later, no further action has ensued, leaving residents, business owners, holidaymakers and motorists totally baffled.

Currently the road is completely open to traffic heading South along the coast road from Altea to Albir. Meanwhile, drivers wishing to travel in the opposite direction from Albir to Altea are directed by a series of inadequate arrows and road closure signs back onto the N332 to continue their journey North.

The stretch of highway actually closed to Northerly vehicles is less than 100 metres so oncoming traffic is clearly visible. A number of drivers are now ignoring the road closed sign, waiting for a break in traffic in the opposite direction to use the Southerly lane. Although this increases the risk of accident, they can save themselves up to half an hour during peak time traffic. This has not gone unnoticed by Local Police who have been watching the roadworks, handing out

warnings and invariably hefty fines to unwary and risk taking drivers.

In addition a number of business owners in the port area of Altea have seen a sharp downturn in revenue since the closure as the volume of traffic arriving into Altea has significantly decreased, particularly as the busy Number 10 bus route bringing passengers from Benidorm has been redirected away from the area altogether.

Information regarding commencent of rebuilding work has been very limited. The official line from the Altea Town

Sailors sick of broken promises

The public ramp in the port of Denia was removed during the construction of the new port a few years ago and ever since, the users of the public moorings have been promised a new one.

There are currently 600 users of the public moorings that have been affected by the disappearance of the public ramp. These users now have to access private ramps to sail their boats – this is free of charge for retirees thanks to the City Council and Marina de Denia but those not of retirement age must pay a fee to do so.

Users of the public moorings have set up an association to campaign for services to be recovered. The association is chaired by Antonio Ortolà Chàfer, with Manolo Mahiques as Vice President, Domingo Contrí as treasurer and José Manuel Agudo as secretary.

The association are to meet with the mayor of Denia, Vicent Grimalt on March 9th to further their request. The perfect spot for the public ramp has been agreed to be between the Real Nautical Club of Denia and the shipyards of Noguera.

Hall, who are responsible for the secton of road, is unclear.

The financially burdened authority already in debt for the building of the new beach last year, which was also severely damaged in the same storms, have issued a statement on their website saying they have asked Central Government for money for the works. However, this could take months to filter through regional and provincial authorities, should they even agree to help.

In the meantime, motorists are left with the dangerous option of driving along the closed section of road or not.

Benidorm bosses up security Benidorm is piloting a new security system in the form of an app for mobile devices.

The app, designed for smart phones and tablets, centres on an alert system and allows the visualisation and permanent control of information between the parties involved in any security set-up.

If plans go ahead to implement the app, the management and dissemination of real time notifications and alerts will be centrally administered, for example, by the local police control centre with access granted to officers, the fire service and the ambulance service.

The app, developed by Invat. tur and the company Notico Safe, is set to prove especially popular at events that concentrate important groups of people. It was first tested during the celebration of the fancy dress that gathered 40,000 people on 18 November.

With safety being of increasing importance to travelers, Benidorm is further pioneering itself as a top holiday destination, with great efforts being made in technological innovation, especially in the provision of security.

Continued from front page The park improvement works of Enginent and Garrofers received a Provincial Delegation grant of €60,000 within the investments in green zones scheme.

Enginent park covers 4,892 meters and currently provides barbecue and picnic facilities. The grant is being used to install a drinking water fountain, improve the barbecue facilities, and build a games area for children and an outdoor physical activity circuit for adults. There are also plans to install five tables under the existing wooden pergola and re-cover it to provide shade.

Garrofers park is smaller, covering 2,575 meters, however it is one of the busiest in Calpe due to its location in the urban area. A games area is also planned for Garrofers but primarily, the grant will be used to build a stairway for access and also make the park accessible from Avenue Masnou.

All parks remain closed to the public while the works are being executed.

Slope in Gandia subsides and drags speologist down Pou de L’Abisme gulf.

by Tahnee Wright A woman who was studying the caves in the Molló de la Creu de Gandia died on Sunday afternoon as she rushed through a 40 meter deep gulf.

The woman fell after a slope subsided at her feet and was dragged down the gulf known as the Pou de l’abisme, in Marxuqera (Gandia). She was studying as part of a group and her peers contacted 112 at approximately 15.20 hours on Sunday and directed them to the area - about 40 minutes by footpath from the foot of a hill.

Three commandos, eight firefighters, two rescuers and two fire engines participated in the rescue, which was complicated as the area itself is difficult to access. The body of the victim was finally rescued on Sunday night but could not be evacuated due to the risks to those involved in the operation. The emergency ser-

vices confirmed that it would wait for daylight to complete the operation by helicopter and two rescue workers of the Consorcio Provincial de Valencia remained next to the body.

When emergency services arrived at the scene on Monday morning, the victim was showing no vital signs.

The pit or pou de l’abisme is a cave located in the eastern part of the Molló de la Creu, in the Serra de la Falconera. It has several slopes, with two wells, one at 15 meters deep and another at 40 meters deep, which is where the victim is said to have fallen. The numerous slopes and difficult track of the cave makes it advisable to have the correct materials and knowledge of speleology to walk through it.

Our thoughts are with the family of the victim.

A 70-year old British man from Benimantell has been admitted to hospital after part of a tree fell on him.

He suffered injuries to leg and hip after a branch of the tree fell upon him on Tuesday when he was pruning it.

He was taken by a helicopter from the Firemen Provincial Station to Alicante, and then onto hospital where he was admitted with slight injuries.

Gürtel corruption ring leaders slammed with 13-year sentences

by Tahnee Wright Famously nicknamed ‘El Bigotes’ Francisco Correa, Pablo Crespo and Álvaro Pérez were handed their 13-year sentences by the High Court earlier in February for unlawfully securing event organisation contracts from the regional government of Valencia.

The ruling of the court on 10th February was that all of the accused were guilty of manipulating the contracts to design, set up and take down the Valencia region pavilion at Fitur, Spain’s premier tourism fair, as well as at other lesser events. The contracts favored Gürtel businesses for five years in a row, between 2005 and 2009 and the ring misappropriated €5million of public funds.

The trial in February was the first of various to be held in connection with the investigations, with the second now underway at the National Court in Madrid. Correa and his companions will leave their cells in order to give evidence once again in knowledge that they could well see their jail terms extended considerably as a result.

In order to attend the second trial, the trio were transferred to a penitentiary centre in Madrid after spending nearly a week in the prison of Picassent, the judge having ruled that they should not be allowed to walk free pending confirmation of the sentences as they presented a flight risk.

National Police arrest five burglars in Madrid FIVE individuals have been arrested in Madrid known to have been involved in robberies in that city, Barcelona and Denia although it is suspected by the National Police that they may have been involved in other robberies throughout Spain.

The crooks followed the same ‘modus operandi’ during each of five burglaries in their hometown of Madrid and additional robberies in the other cities, whereby they visited their targeted victims, pretending to be technicians employed by companies involved with telephones or alarm systems to allow them to obtain access to and a general idea of the systems in place.

They then returned to their targeted homes or offices at a later time, breaking into the properties, forcing locks, nullifying alarm systems and using acetylene torches to open safes with their proceeds of theft well exceeding €20,000.

Following identification and arrest, officers of the National Police found €2,137 euros in cash, nine mobile phones, two tablets and a laptop, six watches jewellery, skeleton keys and documents giving details of how to pick locks.

New director for Montgo Natural Park Joseba Andoni Rodríguez Aizpeolea has been confirmed by The Department of Environment as the new director of the Montgó Natural Park and Pego-Oliva Marjal. Rodríguez is an environmental agent resident in Pedreguer who has been working for several years in the Marina Alta.

Government changes of the Generalitat Valenciana came into effect just over 20 months ago. The first step taken by the Council of Ximo Puig was to appoint Joan Sala as president of the Governing Board of the Montgó Natural Park. The Council and Sala himself are now delighted to welcome Rodriguez to the board.

Lawyers representing both Crespo and Correa disputed this, alleging that public opinion had been allowed to influence the decision. Correa’s lawyer also explained how Correa had offered to deposit bail of €278,000 with the courts where the ban on his Swiss bank accounts to be lifted. This paled into insignificance when the courts reminded him that a fine of €3.9million has been imposed upon him.

With nearly 200 official suspects, it is the largest pre-trial probe in modern Spanish history and has been broken up into sections to facilitate the investigation.

Benissa teacher on sex offence charge A Benissa high school teacher was arrested in a Valencia hotel last week on suspicion of hiring under age prostitutes.

The teacher is said not to have committed any offences in Benissa itself, however was caught with a minor last week by the Guardia Civil and confessed to paying another four underage girls for sex.

Women’s week in Teulada Moraira International Women’s Day takes place on 8th March and this year, the people of Teulada Moraira decided one day simply did not afford enough time to honour the women´s fight for equal rights in our society and have done a great job in organising ‘Women’s Week’.

The week will take place around International Women’s Day itself and between 4th – 12th March with Various sports activities, exhibitions, workshops and lectures have been organised.

Councillor Rosana Caselles spoke at the press conference and highlighted that the moment we can guarantee equal rights to women, we will have a better democratic society and this will promote wellbeing as well as evolution. It also means promoting a new social way of living, with women at the heart.

The programme for the week will focus on the work women accomplish and will encourage the society to further understand the importance of equal rights.

A current and worrying issue given the recent rise in domestic violence rates across Spain, the programme has also been designed to continue the fight against the damage done by genderspecific violence. The programme will help to prevent this social problem and offers activities for all age groups.

The programme starts on 4th March with a padel tournament for women. On 8th March at 12pm the manifest will be read on the Town Hall Square and the Espai la Senieta will welcome an exhibition of paintings, ‘Piedra Libre’, by the artist Paola R. Bavaro at 6:30pm. At 7pm there is a workshop ‘Claus per a millorar la nostra vida afectiva sexual’ conducted by Maite Ahuir, sexologist.

New cancer psychologist at local hospital Denia’s Department of Health contracts oncology specialist.

by Tahnee Wright Psychologist, Javier Murcia will provide his services in the area of oncology at the hospital in Denia. Snr. Murcia is an AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) psychologist recruited by Denia’s Department of Health to offer psychological care to cancer patients at the hospital and their families who require it.

In recognition of World Cancer Day on 4th February, Dr. Joan Manel Gassent, who is head of the oncology department at the hospital, discussed their state-of-the-art facilities. With well-equipped multidisciplinary teams for the treatment of cancer, specialized surgeons, plastic surgeons or interventional radiologists who carry out very innovative techniques available in very few centres, such as chemoembolization, patients are in good hands.

Dr Gassent praised the work of the multidisciplinary committees whose evaluation and analysis work is vital to ensure the early and

appropriate diagnosis of cancer.

The head of oncology also thanked the professionals in his department who give care on a day-to-day basis to cancer patients.

Last year, nearly 4,600 cancer patients were treated at Denia Hospital with a total of 3700 treatments dispensed. According to data provided by the hospital’s oncology department, the most frequent cases in the region of Marina Alta are breast, digestive, prostate and lung cancers.

A team of British basketballers from Lincoln arrive in Benidorm for four days on June 29th and they are hoping to arrange some friendly games with local sides. The team has been established for over forty years, with player ages ranging from 16 to 54. The team is offering to return the favour back in England at a later date.

The Els Poblets bar/restaurant fell victim to the recent storms that battered our coastline.

The entire terrace was lost along with integral structures inside being destroyed.

The Los Banos team has been working solidly since the disaster to rebuild, redecorate and refurnish the much-loved establishment, providing their followers with regular updates on progress and a potential re-open date via social media.

Los Banos is well regarded on TripAdvisor for its extensive cocktail menu complemented by fresh Mediterranean eats. With a range of seating areas to suit all occasions – deck chairs to soak up the sun whilst sipping a sangria, Ibiza-style chill out benches and shaded dining areas perfect for families, it is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Spain’s Eurovision star for 2017 Song selection scandal.

by Tahnee Wright This year’s Eurovision Song Contest is not taking place until May but is already causing controversy here in Spain.

‘Do It For Your Lover’ by Manel Navarro was selected as the Spanish Eurovision entry as the national final took place at the VAV studios in Leganés in February.

20 year-old Navarro tied with popular choice Mirela who sang in Spanish as opposed to Navarro who sang in English.

Three celebrity judges announced their points before the public vote was added to provide the result. Two of the judges put Navarro first and hot favourite Mirela last, while the third judge placed Mirela first and Navarro third.

Loud booing and complaining could be heard from the audience throughout the broadcast as it was announced that the Spanish public had placed Mirela first and Navarro third, repealing the deficit and resulting in a tie on 58 points each.

Given the tie result, judges cast a vote to decide which act would win and go forward as Spain’s Eurovision entry with Navarro coming out on top.

An abundant number of audience members walked out before Navarro could reprise his song. He was noticeably shaken by the backlash, gesturing to the crowd before apol-

ogising after the show.

As if the disappointment from the Spanish public was not enough, the result has caused further drama after an apparent friendship on Twitter between judges Xavi Martinez and Navarro emerged.

Xavi had given his maximum 12 points to Navarro and put Mirela in last place, enough to prevent Mirela from victory.

While The Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española (RTVE) stand by the decision, stating that rules were clear before the show, following widespread public backlash across Spain, Deputy for Toledo, Jose Miguel Camacho is now insisting on an inquiry.

Could Spain be forced to reverse the result?

Eurovision 2017 will take place in the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev,Ukraine, following Ukraine's victory at the 2016 contest in Stockholm.

Gata has joined the Alliance of Cities for Sustainable Development, which will focus much of its actions on schools. The mayor of Gata, Magda Mengual (Compormís) and the general director of Cooperation and Solidarity, Federico Buyolo, have signed a collaboration agreement between the city council and the Conselleria de Transparencia for the initiation of an education campaign as part of the Cities Alliance for Sustainable Development scheme. Following a plenary session which took place in November, the municipality's admission to the alliance was approved on 23rd February. Speaking at the signing of the agreement, which was also attended by the Councilor for Sustainable Development, Jaume Monfort, Mengual discussed plans to promote the objectives of sustainable development among the school population of Gata, with a range of activities to suit various age groups.

Denia to receive 190,000€ from Valencian Tourism Agency City recognised by UNESCO as ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’.

by Tahnee Wright It was an exciting day for all in Denia on Tuesday as the 6th International Contest of Creative Cuisine of Damba Red Gamba took place in the Municipal Market of Denia on Magallanes Street.

The event paid homage to the Denia Red Prawn and fosters the launch and promotion of young chefs committed to creative cuisine.

During the course of the content, regional secretary of the Valencia Tourism Agency, Francesc Colomer announced the signing of an agreement whereby the city will receive €190,000 in support of the project ‘Denia, Creative City of Gastronomy’ organised by UNESCO. Colomer recognised the importance of gastronomy in our society and said the agreement is signed with the objective of launching initiatives aimed at promoting and boosting local gastronomy in a key year for the municipality.

The gastronomy and food industries are the main economic drivers of the city of Denia, with more than 500 enterprises generating 2,500 direct jobs The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is currently formed by 116 Members from 54 countries covering seven creative fields: Crafts & Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Music and Media Arts.

In its promotion of Denia on its website, it describes the city as ‘a Mediterranean port city with an ample space for traditional fishing, a sector which contributes about €15 million in sales annually to the local economy’.

Floren Terrades Palacios, Denia’s director of the programme based in the Innovation and Creativity Office at Denia City Council has committed to sharing knowledge, experiences and best practices, particularly in the framework of the Open Africa programme, an initiative undertaken by the Balearia Cultural Foundation, thanks to which it has already launched a fruitful relationship with Tangier (Morocco) as twin cities.

Eat 10 pieces of fruit a day to avoid early death Forget five a day, scientists are now saying we should actually consume at least ten pieces of fruit and vegetables daily to cut the risk of premature death. Two out of three of us struggle to reach the current recommended amount of five, but if we were to increase our intake to ten, we would slash the risk of heart disease by 24 percent, strokes by 33 percent and Cancer by 13 percent.

The study, conducted by scientists at Imperial College London, concluded five portions a day is good for us, but ten is much better and could prevent up to 7.8 million premature deaths worldwide each year.

The researchers found apples, pears, citrus fruits, salads, leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach, plus cruciferous vegetables like caulflower would help prevent Heart Disease. However, to guard against Cancer, green vegetables such as green beans, yellow and orange vegetables like peppers and carrots and cruciferous vegetables are more benefcial.

A portion is classed as 80 grammes which throws up some interesting comparisons for confused shoppers. For example, two slices of mango count the same as 2 whole nectarines, whereas two inches of cucumber are equal to a whole bowl of lettuce.

In addition there are some surprising foodstuffs which count towards our goal and some interesting ones which don't. Potatoes, ketchup, jam, fruit yoghurts, onion rings and wine ( shame ) unfortunately do not count. Whereas baked beans, sweet potato fries, fried tomato on your English breakfast, guacamole and pickled vegetables all count towards the ten.

Now, the good news, the scentists also said even increasing our intake to 2.5 portions a day would have a significant effect on our health and guess what, a mince pie does count towards your daily allowance. Maybe it's time to delve into the back of your store cupboard for the Christmas leftovers.

Mount Etna erupts for the first time this year Europe’s most active volcano sends a tower of bright lava into the sky.

by Tahnee Wright Mount Etna, on the Italian island of Sicily, is the largest active volcano in Europe and although one of the world's most frequently erupting volcanoes, it has been largely dormant for the past two years.

The minor eruption took place on Tuesday but soon subdued. The authorities have reported no danger to the nearby towns and there has been no disruption to air traffic.

Other minor eruptions occurred in 2016 and 2015 and in 2014, it burst into a spectacular nighttime display. The last major eruption was in 1992 Mount Etna has the longest record of continuous eruption in the world and also made an appearance in ‘Star Wars’ movie, Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The volcano often comes to life in short, violent bursts called paroxysms. Its outbursts produce enough lava each year to fill Chicago's Willis Tower (the former Sears Tower), a 2012 study found. Located near the east coast of the island of Sicily, Mount Etna is 10,900 feet (3,329 meters) tall with a base circumference of about 93 miles (150 kilometers). Mount Etna is a series of nested stratovolcanoes with four distinct summit craters. There are two central craters, called Bocca Nuova and Voragine; the Northeast crater; and the newest Southeast crater, which was formed by an eruption in 1978.

Strombolian eruptions, which produce ash, tephra and lava fountains, are fairly common in these craters. The eruptions of early 2013 were mostly strombolian eruptions. The January 2013 eruption was from Bocca Nuova, and the February eruptions are most noticeable from the Southeast crater.

1200€ raised for Teulada – Moraira Alzheimer’s Society Shondell Mims stuns crowd in charity performance at Espai la Senieta.

by Tahnee Wright Shondell Mims put on a captivating performance on 16th February at the Espai la Senieta, Moraira to raise funds for the Teulada – Moraira Alzheimer’s Society (AFA).

The renowned Blues, Soul and Motown singer was accompanied by her saxophone player Achmed and together they had the audience mesmerized – singing and dancing in the aisles to an eclectic selection of harmonies that included soul, blues, disco and gospel.

AFA President Sylvia Tatnell got up on stage to thank the audience for their generosity and also received a cheque for the proceeds from the “Desperados” concert held in January, which had raised another 1000€.

The spectacular show was produced by Magnum Charity Concerts and proved a huge success for the local charity. Magnum Charity Concerts regularly brings together hundreds of locals and tourists alike and recently staged a concert featuring the band Chess and their “Queen Forever” tribute show, thereafter presenting a cheque to the ISVH Bomberos Voluntarios of Javea for 1600€.

Magnum’s next local charity concert at Espai la Senieta is scheduled for March 25th and features the acclaimed ‘Liverpool Band’, regarded as the best Beatles tribute here in Spain. The Liverpool Band regularly play the famous ‘Cavern Club’ in Liverpool, described in music writer and Merseybeat historian Spencer Leigh’s book as ‘The Most Famous Club in the World’.

The concert will provide the perfect opportunity to pull out those flower power shirts, flares and hippy accessories and enjoy a tribute to the best-selling band of all time.

Carnival celebrations in Teulada The Sant Vicent Ferrer school in Teulada celebrated their annual carnival celebration last Friday afternoon. Teachers, pupils and many parents gathered together all dressed up and paraded around the town in colourful and exciting outfits. This years chosen theme was different for each year group. From the nursery children dressed as tomatoes and other vegetables to the older children as exotic parrots and other cultural themes.

Teulada town along with many parents and grandparents followed the children along the streets taking photographs and joining in with all the fun. Monitored by the local police.

Beware of the processionary caterpillars

by Andy Mansell MOST OF us look forward to early Spring in anticipation of warmer days, shorter nights and nature bursting into life after the cooler winter months. For dog owners the better weather offers plenty of opportunity for long walks in the countryside. Unfortunately a particular menace lies in wait for unsuspecting and curious dogs in the form of the deadly Pine Processionary Caterpillar, which can inflict serious or in some cases fatal injury if merely sniffed or licked by the animal.

The pests are also known as Marching Caterpillars, because of the way they move along the ground in head to tail linear movements. They are responsible for much of the deforestation of pine forest in Southern Europe and lay their eggs high up in the trees and occasionally at lower levels. Look up into pine trees at this time of year and you are likely to see one of the distinctive nests hanging in what appears to be an almost see through gauze. These can contain literally dozens of eggs.

Once the caterpillars hatch and fall to the ground, they move in a procession across paths and roads following a pherenome trail produced by the insect ahead of them. To protect themselves they grow se-

verely irritative harpoon like hairs.

A dogs natural instinct is to lick or sniff anything it comes into contact with. However, just a tiny amount of contact with these caterpillar hairs can induce a severe allergic reaction, causing swelling of the tongue and nasal passages, often leading to deadly breathing difficulties.

Dog owners need to be extra vigilant for the next few weeks as the caterpillars have already begun to drop from their nests and are marching around the undergrowth and footpaths. Should your pet be unlucky enough to come into contact with these nasty insects, get them to the nearest vet as quickly as possible, The vet will administer a cortizone injection and pills to calm the reaction. In some cases part of the swollen infected tongue will have to be removed to help with normal breathing.

It is also advisable for humans to avoid any contact with the caterpillars as we too can develop a nasty skin reaction to the hairs. This can be particularly painful for children, who may try and touch the funny little creatures without being aware of the consequences.

Jalon Valley A.R.C.

It hardly seems possible that in April it will be 3 years since ARC was founded. Who would have thought that following the rescue of a heavily pregnant cat who produced 5 beautiful kittens, they could have achieved so much in that time?

The cat was Christened April (of course) and good homes were found for her and all her kittens. April was the catalyst (excuse the pun) for Jayne Webb and Sally Mason to launch the charity Jalon Valley A.R.C., which is in the Valley for the Valley, and has become a much needed and established facility in Jalon and the surrounding villages of Lliber, Alcalali, Parcent, Benigembla & Murla. The shop in Jalon was opened by the Mayor in September 2015 and is the main source of income for the charity. Donations of saleable goods are always welcome plus items for the animals, cat and dog food, blankets, towels, beds, toys etc. ARC is fortunate in that we have many wonderful volunteers who work in the shop but we can always do with more, plus people to walk the dogs and foster or adopt the animals in our care. We have also had two Christmas Gift fairs which have raised much needed cash to pay the bills, many of which are for BERNIA VETS, who provide an essential service and are absolutely amazing and really helpful and caring with all the animals.

We all know how many pets are abandoned, lost, ill-treated or left to their own devices and, until ARC was born, there wasn't a local organisation for the Valley animals. So far ARC has rescued and rehomed many cats and dogs, plus quite a few AWOL’s have been re-united with their owners with the help of the Jalon Valley ARC’s Facebook page. Lots of feral cats have been spayed and returned to their ‘patch’ and kittens have been adopted.

However, the current situation is dire with Jayne looking after about 15 dogs all needing homes and Sally with about 25 cats and kittens.

Neighbours come together over Monte Pego autoprotection project Monte Pego is split into three areas Pego, Rafol and Denia and last summer saw the creation of The Association of Proprietors and Residents in Monte Pego (Pro Monte Pego).

Pro Monte Pego members recently met with representatives from the three town halls, along with a forest engineer to discuss an auto-protection project.

The meeting saw representatives from the town halls approving plans for 2017 and confirming their commitment in collaborating to create a project of regular maintenance and protection of fire. The auto-protection project will include the cleaning of the roads, private and public plots, green areas and forest of the 3 municipalities.

The Pro Monte Pego organisation is for proprietors or full-time residents of Monte Pego and their families and was designed to ‘give a voice to all members and present information that is relevant to everyone’. Members are invited to regular meetings, social activities and events.

Euro Weekly News bags national prize

EWN publishers Michel and Steven Euesden were on hand to collect the award at the glittering gala event, which took place in the Auditorium of the famous Royal Post Office building in Madrid.

The AEEPP event is now in its 11th year, and it is considered to be among the most prestigious press awards in Spain.

According to the organisers, the winner of the Best Free Publication award demonstrates “the most impressive knowledge of the publishing world alongside the greatest imagination, sense of originality, innovation and risktaking.”

The jury featured Francisco Hortigüela, communications and marketing director for Samsung Spain, MatildePelegri, president of Senda Group, and Elia Mendez, director general of the Spanish Mobile Marketing Association, among others.

The AEEPP comprises around 100 publishing firms which together produce more than 900 titles covering both online and printed media, with an estimated annual readership of almost 130 million.

U3A Marina Baixa Masked Ball THE U3A Marina Baixa recently held their Masked Ball at The Peppermill in Benidorm where 74 members and guests were in attendance.

They enjoyed a superb 3 course dinner including drinks followed by music from Duo Zodiac and plenty of dancing. The finale of the evening was the Masquerade Parade with a prize for the ‘best mask’ which was won by Alison Mitchell. The whole evening was perfect from beginning to end and sincere thanks go to Marilyn & her husband Peter, who organised the event.

Benidorm loses an Old Town legend A well loved member of the Benidorm Old Town entertainment scene recently passed away after a short illness. Alan Sheehan, one half of the famous, or should that be infamous, Horror Sisters had been a regular at Kaffee Klee for twenty two years until he hung up his stilletoes last year. Along with his partner and husband Michael they had performed their fabulously outrageous and equally hilarious drag show three nights a week since 1994.

The couple originally lived in Benidorm for three years in the 1970's but moved home to Blackpool for work. Alan worked in Hotels, but had also previously worked on the Orient Express.

On their return to the City, they quickly developed a firm friendship with Paula and Monique at Kaffee Klee and began performing their fantastic double act. The rest is part of Benidorm folklore. The Horror Sisters quickly established themselves as a must see show, adored by holidaymakers and locals alike and Alan, with his deadpan face and wicked sense of Humour regularly reduced the audience to tears of helpless laughter, particularly when performing his famous solo The Chicken Song.

In 2006 the couple were very honoured to be the first non Spanish gay couple to get married at Benidorm Town Hall, where even the local Policia turned out to celebrate.

Alan and Michael had been partners for 54 years and performed together for all the subsequent owners of Kaffee Klee until they moved back to Blackpool last September when Alan's illness worsened. Michael explained " It was actually very quick, but even though he deteriorated rapidly at the end he still knew who i was, which makes me happy " Alan's funeral takes place in Blackpool next Friday March 10th and Michael will be visiting Benidorm with friends the following week to hold a small celebration party, and also perhaps as Alan would say " Raise a glass of vinegar! "

Javea U3A boost for Red Cross JAVEA U3A presented €1,312.21 to Red Cross Javea, its nominated charity for 2016/17, at its February general meeting at the Parador Hotel.

U3A president Eric Atkins handed over a cheque to Red Cross representatives Meike and Neus, who said they were delighted to receive the donation and thanked members for their generosity.

The money was raised among the 1,300-plus U3A members at various fundraising events throughout the year.

The association’s chosen charity for this year is Make A Smile, which supports needy children throughout the Costa Blanca and also runs a refuge for 24 handicapped youngsters.

Javea U3A continues to grow in popularity. With 42 new members joining at the latest meeting, membership has already reached the total for the whole of last year.

Appropriately, the speaker at the meeting was member Angela Chantry, who gave a valuable insight into the organisation in a presentation entitled “The U3A Story … and new initiatives and international developments”.

She explained how the U3A idea began in France in 1968 and over the next few years spread throughout Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Italy and Spain as well as Quebec and California … but at that time not the UK. By 1981 there were more than 170 institutions throughout the world.

The following year, Cambridge became the first U3A in England followed by London and Huddersfield. In 1983 they were joined by a number of others including Stevenage, Harpenden, Yeovil and Barnstable.

Now there are 1,004 U3As throughout the UK with over 384,000 members.

Monte Carlo or Bust by

It’s a world of the have’s and have not’s, but if you want a real sight of the former, get yourself over to Monaco.

Until we disembarked the luxurious Queen Victoria, we had felt pampered and special, but once ashore we were like Victorian ragamuffins with our noses pressed up against the toy shop window.

Two super cruisers were moored near to us and Mr Google informed us they had cost $120 million and $150 million to build and were owned by Russians.

I express no opinion on Russian oligarchs and how they might have made their billions. The last thing I need is a knock on the door at three in the morning and being confronted by seven foot Yetis with muscles in their spit.

But these gin palaces are small fry compared to some of the stuff that floats into Monte Carlo, we were told.

Super duper expensive cars are everywhere and plonking ourselves in a smart cafe in the Place du Casino, we were given a continuous display of mouth watering automobiles in a meandering stream as they traversed the square.

True, there was the occasional Renault or Volkswagen (peasants) but they were always sandwiched by yet another McLaren, Bentley or Lamborghini.

Monte Carlo has more Rolls than a Sainsbury’s cafeteria. We settled the €90 bill for our six beers and having applied CPR to our friend Adrian and his ravaged wallet, we decided to enter the hallowed halls of the casino. Except me.

I was dispatched to the nearby Hotel de Paris to enquire about room rates. Just for a laugh they said.

So, adjusting my slightly scuffed plastic rain jacket, and pleased that my Primark chinos were clean on that

day, I entered the Foyer that resembled a Liberace wet dream.

“May I help you sir?” enquired Al Pacino as he and three extras from Godfather VII closed in on me.

“Just came in to get a brochure”, I stammered.

“I am sorry sir, but only registered guests at the Casino are permitted to stay here”.

How did he know that I was not a high roller?

Taking another step towards me as if to emphasis the point that I should leave, I caught a whiff of his exclusive after shave, probably ‘Macho

Platinum’ by Chanel.

And as I slunk away, I left him with a whiff of mine: ‘Abject Humiliation’ by The Pound Shop.

There are some pretty crazy myths about Benidorm. My favourite is that the resort’s “Bird Island” appeared when a chunk of the mountain range called Puig Campana – a backdrop to the city – was kicked into the sea by a giant called Roldan who lost his cool when his daughter married a man he disapproved of.

But some of the true facts about Benidorm – one of Spain’s most important tourist destinations that attracts around five million holidaymakers every year – are far stranger than the bunkum.

One concerns the efforts of Pedro Zaragoza Orts – the man credited with Benidorm’s creation – to get once strongly Catholic Spain to accept the bikini.

Zaragoza, Benidorm’s mayor for 17 years who died in 2008 aged 85, had seen pictures of the twopiece swimming costumes in magazines. He liked what he saw, and knew that – in northern Europe – they had become enormously popular.

But in Spain the skimpy beachwear horrified the Church, and was banned by the Franco regime.

In 1953 – on the principle that “you simply couldn’t stop it” – Zaragoza allowed bikinis in Benidorm. No one in the country had attempted this before, and there was outrage.

As members of the Civil Guard scuffled with scantily-clad girls on Benidorm’s beaches, the local archbishop threatened to excommunicate Zaragoza, who then decided to appeal directly to the dictator Franco.

At 6am one morning he reportedly set off for Madrid on his Vespa motor scooter, arriving in the Spanish capital eight hours later. “I changed my shirt but I went in to the General with my trousers spattered with motor oil,” he later claimed. “He backed me, and the bikini stayed”.

If bikinis put a frown on the faces of diehard religious traditionalists, imagine their fury when Benidorm actively began promoting itself as a gay “Mecca” – today the city’s gay scene is on par with many of much longer-established world resorts.

Regular visitors – and I was one until I settled here more than six years ago – all agree that it’s friendlier and less expensive than, say, Sitges, Gran Canaria, Mykonos or Brighton.

It is home to a brilliant network of gay bars and clubs, literally situated minutes from each other in the picturesque Old Town, which is also crammed with a variety of restaurants offering cuisines ranging from traditional Spanish to Indian, Chinese and Thai.

Another myth about Benidorm: the city has to import sand from Morocco to maintain its fabulous golden beaches.

This “fact” apparently originated when a tour rep told this to a coachload of tourists heading from Alicante airport to their hotel in Benidorm in the early 70s. His comment passed into media history, and many still believe it is true.

The truth is that the resort’s seven kilometres of silky soft sand are absolutely natural, and the city is actually an exporter that supplies high-grade sand to a number of nearby resorts.

Sex in the gritty

WE ARE all familiar with the terms, slap an’ tickle, hanky-panky or a little bit of how’s your father. Such colourful expressions amusingly suggest that we are more comfortable with alternatives to the taboo three-letter word.

There is much eccentricity about the British approach to human congress. Yet, amorous activity between humans is as essential to life as is eating, breathing, drinking beer and sleeping. But, we smile as we recall the name of the theatre production, ‘No Sex Please, We’re British’.

Maybe the stork did deliver us.

Unable to recall the event, I have to trust those who tell me when my 0 birthday party was held. I was hungry at the time and had other things on my mind. Strangely enough the same attractions still appeal and have held my attention ever since.

As a ghost-writer it occurs to me that romantic novels and movies have lost the plot. On the one hand there is the Mills and Boon

type of romance. Apart from a little heavy breathing, whispered endearments and the tearing sound of a bodice, the rest is left to the imagination.

Then, from the sublime to the ridiculous, the alternative is animalistic artificial couplings. These fantasy encounters are salaciously narrated in a way that would make a trooper blush.

There is an elephant in the room and we seem to be blind to it. As a professional writer of other people’s books I am convinced that fantasy or real life amorous activities can and should be beautifully and romantically portrayed without the necessity of sordid titillation.

One’s choice of novel doesn’t have to be maiden aunt or tasteless depravity. Amorous encounters can be written, read and enjoyed in such a way as to arouse empathy. The act of lovemaking then becomes what it should be; the fulfilment of a romantic relationship in ways that we actually yearn for, identify with and are actually achievable.

This is what is missing and we can be certain that novelists and biographers, skillful and imaginative enough to reset romance will discover a profitable market.

Victors Vision

My word Victor, you certainly don’t look your age Yes. I know I should be flattered when getting a remark like that from someone I’m meeting for the first time.

Well, just between you and me – I am. But it does get a bit irritating and embarrassing, and just occasionally I become all coy and gawky. The fact is my age is no secret. And why should it be? Most of my friends know that I am in my eighth decade, and have not noticed any great difference from a good few years ago, except that I get tetchy more times than I should!

However, it all depends on how you cope with the ageing process when you get there. If you think old then old will take over. I mention all this because age seems to have become a hot topic over the years, not only in the UK but also here in Spain. The prejudice that has existed for so long has given way to a greater understanding that as soon as you reach retirement age you are not ready for the garbage bin.

Of course age prejudice is no problem for the angels of HELP, that wonderful organization set up more than thirty years ago by Jill Porter Smith and her husband to assist expat patients at local hospitals who were unable to speak Spanish. But over the years HELP has become more than just a vehicle for language assistance. It consists of a group of compassionate people, some of them of ‘advanced age’, all of whom are dedicated to making the lives of expat patients more comfortable and less anxious. For instance, take Carol Valente.

Although born in England, Carol went to school in Switzerland and then went to live with a Spanish family in Madrid where she learnt to speak fluent Spanish.

Some years and a couple of husbands later she came to live in Denia where she joined HELP. Over the years Carol has not only embraced her translator skills with vigour and determination but she has also given comfort to those who were unaware that they were dying.

Carol Valente is now 83 years old. Most days you will find her striding energetically along the corridors at La Marina Hospital at Denia meeting expat patients and taking them off to keep their Consultant appointments. You probably wouldn’t even notice her, a slight diminutive figure wearing quite ordinary clothes but with a pleasant smile that would reassure any doubting soul. At the age of 83 Carol Valente has as much energy and stamina as someone half her age. But she is also no man’s fool. I remember a time when I failed to turn up for an appointment and that sweet welcoming voice turned into a block of stone: ‘You should have let me know,’ she said, scolding me like a school matron. ‘This is a hospital and we all have to stick to time.’

The look I got convinced me not to be so negligent in the future!

Carol Valente is what the difference between young and old is all about. Aches and pains maybe, but the brain is as active as ever and anyone who underestimates its potency, its potential, is making a grave error. However, age must be treated with as much respect by the old themselves as by the young.

In my range of vision retirement is a dirty word. In fact, whoever coined the phrase, ‘Old age isn’t for cissies,’ got it just about right.

Dangerous zebra

I walk my children every day to school. At the top of the main road in our town there is a bus stop. In front of the bus stop there is a zebra crossing, which I have to cross with my young children to get to school. There are no traffic lights. Where the zebra crossing is situated and the top of the main road which leads to a roundabout with signs for two different towns. The traffic is horrendous and cars do not stop at the crossing because they are not looking, they are only looking at the town signs for where they want to go. How do I get in touch with the local town hall or council about sorting out a pelican traffic light there? I live very close to the crossing and have seen and heard many accidents that have happened there. I am worried for the safety of myself and my children when we cross the road.

I suffer with a bad back and visit the Chiropactist at least once a week for treatment. My argument is the humps in the road, do they have to be so steep?

They really make my back jolt and I suffer if they appear unexpected. Even if my husband drives over them very slowly I still feel pain. Why do they have to be so big and steep?

Overtaking Cyclists?

I travel to and from Moraira to Calpe every day along the coast road. My friend told me when she overtook a group of cyclists they pulled out on her. Causing her to nearly have an accident. Are they meant to be cycling in a single line because every time I drive behind them they are cycling next to one another.

There will be a fatality at some point. But which one has the right of way, the cyclist or the driver? What are the rules about overtaking cyclists?

Spanish inflation rate at more than 4-year high Well above the ECB target of just below 2 percent The Spanish inflation rate rocketed to 3 percent year-on-year in February, up from 2.9 percent in January and the fastest growth rate since December 2012.

The rate was lower than the expected 3.2 percent by analysts in a Reuters poll but has nevertheless fuelled criticism in Germany of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) quantitative easing programme, which is aimed at taking price growth back to the central bank’s goal of just below 2 percent.

Surging prices across the euro zone have caused debate over the ECB’s next move and whether it will scale back its monetary policy stance now, given that an economic recovery across the bloc also appears to be picking up steam.

Inflation rate is based upon the consumer price index (CPI) and in Spain, the most

important categories in the consumer price index are food and non-alcoholic beverages (20 percent of the total weight), transport (15 percent), housing and utilities (13 percent) and hotels, cafés and restaurants (12 percent).

The index also includes: Recreation and culture (9 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (7 percent); and clothing and footwear (7 percent). Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; health; communications; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; and education account for the remaining 18 percent of total weight.

Inflation rate in Spain averaged 6.84 percent from 1955 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 28.43 percent in August of 1977 and a record low of -1.37 percent in July of 2009.

Preliminary inflation readings for Germany are due on March 1, while data European Central for the euro zone as a whole will be Bank in Frankfurt, Germany released on March 2.

Working people die before qualifying for state pension Pension age to rise to 70.5 years?

MPs in the UK have warned that further increases to the state pension age could mean many working people die before qualifying for it.

In The Commons work and pensions select committee report on intergenerational fairness, published on Tuesday, it was claimed that financing the current “triple lock” guarantee on pensions in the future will not be possible without increasing the state pension age to 70.5 years.

Making the triple lock sustainable would mean pushing the state pension age over average life expectancy in poorer areas of the UK. It would leave men in London, Blackpool, Bradford and Manchester dying on average before they receive their state pension. Current male life expectancy is lowest in Blackpool, at 67.5, while it is 68.7 in parts of Bradford and 70.2 in much of Manchester. Tower Hamlets in London’s East End has a male life expectancy of 69.1.

The committee, citing figures from the Institute of Fiscal Studies recommended that the triple lock be replaced from 2020 by a smoothed earnings link. This would benchmark the state pension to a fixed proportion of average earnings whilst also protecting its purchasing power in times of inflation.

Ministers have rejected suggestions that the triple lock be replaced. A government spokesperson said: “The government wants to ensure economic security for people at every stage of their life, including retirement. The triple lock has protected the incomes of millions of pensioners and we are committed to it for the duration of this parliament.”

Retirees who have an occupational pension, own their own home and may also still be earning (gains from property etc.) are £20 a week better off than working households on average –according to research published last week by the Resolution Foundation.

Men in London, Blackpool, Bradford and Manchester are less likely to receive their state pension.

The cost of electricity varies hugely from country to country and further differences can be seen between localities within any particular country.

There are many factors that account for these price differences. The cost of power generation depends on local weather patterns, government and industry regulation, government subsidies and of course, largely on the type and market price of the fuel used.

In the European Commission’s third Quarterly Report of 2016 on European electricity markets, the EU average household electricity price (inclusive of taxes) was 20.90 c€/kWh. The report was taken across 28 countries and shows Spanish electricity costing above average and more than that of its neighbouring countries at 21.35 c€/kWh whilst residents in the UK pay 19.47 c€/kWh and those in France enjoy 16.90 c€/kWh. If you’re a business owner, you would also pay less for electricity to run your shop, office or warehouse in France, with the Commission’s report on industrial consumers electricity prices (without VAT and non-recoverable taxes) showing average prices of 9.99 c€/kWh in France in comparison to 13.74 c€/kWh in England and 10.20 c€/kWh in Spain. The EU average for industrial consumers being 11.80 c€/kWh. There are an array of price-comparison sites allowing you to keep check that you’re receiving the best rates for your electricity along with other utilities – gas, water etc.

A Yes‌Depending on the last Will and Testament and the applicable law of the inheritance, the property and assets could be distributed among the other heirs or they could be divided among the children of the person who renounces the inheritance. My favourite moment of the month has to be the Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show, and it seems I am not the only one to have been blown away. Global superstar Lady Gaga took to the humungous stage in Housten’s NRG Stadium on the 5th of this month, and what a show. An unbeatable aerial display, killer dance routines combined with her signature vocals certainly cemented Gaga as the Queen of the concert. The show received 117.5 million viewers upon its initial broadcast, and over 150 million viewers across all platforms, making it the most viewed musical event in history according to NFL. P.S. Commercials costs peaked this year at a cost of $5 million for a 30 second broadcast!

Over the next two weeks there will be music, parades, lots of parties and the streets and squares of the busy city will become filled with over 800 individual statues, each carefully designed and brightly painted, that ultimately will be burned on the last day. On the 17th and 18th March, the city celebrates “La ofrenda de flores” (the offering of the flowers) which is a procession by the “Falleras” which each offer a bunch of flowers to a 12 meter high virgin Mary that is constructed of wood in the “Plaza de la Virgen” next to the Cathedral and the flowers are placed colour by colour until the structure is completed.

The statues that line the street and squares are caricatures of fanciful figures, famous people, and politicians in provocative poses arranged in a gravity-defying manner as they reach up into the sky, with some of them being over

30 metres tall. The festival itself is held in commemoration of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters and marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

It is said that the tradition started in the middle ages, when artisans disposed of broken artefacts and pieces of wood they saved during the winter by burning them to celebrate the spring equinox. Valencia carpenters used planks of wood to hang their candles on during the winter to provide the light they needed to work. With the arrival of spring, they were no longer needed and so burned. Over time and with the intervention of the church, the date of the burning was made to coincide with the celebration of the festival of Saint Joseph and has grown to what we see today as one of the largest celebrations in Spain.

Kenny, People have been telling me about the New World Order. Can you explain what this is because I am finding it hard to accept the reality of it!

Carmen A. Hi Carmen. The New World Order can be seen in many ways. It is in effect a need to Globalise the World and to establish a Government that is responsible for the administration of it.

Though this may have a sinister repercussion it is important to say that if such an action improves the life we all lead then it will iron out all the poverty and misery, and offer enhanced facilities that the entire World can benefit from directly.

There are those who feel that such a globalisation may be detrimental to those very people who are at risk, as the World cannot, or will not, be able to support such a burgeoning population, with a negative result ensuing.

Millions affected by lack of iron Females suffer deficiency more than men

Yoga and arthritis RECENT STUDIES conducted by an American research team have shown a significant improvement in the health of arthritis sufferers who take part in regular yoga sessions. The twice weekly sessions helped to reduce the pain endured by those with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, whilst also boosting energy levels and making it easier to carry out everyday tasks.

Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of cartilage, making joints painful and causing difficulties for suffers to bend, lift and grip. Rheumatoid arthritis is linked to the immune system attacking the joints making them painful and swollen. There are no cures for either.

All participants in the study had either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Half of them did two yoga classes a week plus a practice session at home, whilst the other half continued life as normal. After two months, the yoga participants reported around a 20 per cent improvement in pain relief, increased energy levels and better mood and physical function.

Anyone with arthritis intending to start yoga should always consult their doctor before their first session.

There are a number of well qualified yoga instructors in our area who will help you choose the most suitable classes for your current fitness levels.

We can often dismiss our tiredness and low energy levels as pitfalls of a busy and stressful lifestyle, but these symptoms may be hiding a far more serious health issue. We could actually be suffering from Iron deficiency.

Millions of unsuspecting people, particularly women are getting far too little Iron though the foods they eat. Even female athletes can suffer with some getting up to 60% less than their dietary needs. Severe deficiency can occasionally lead to clinical anaemia as the mineral is a building block for healthy red blood cells.

Less common symptoms are frequent headaches, palpitations, hair loss, itchy skin and an altered state of taste.

Some simple diet changes can help us increase our Iron intake. Lean red meat contains three times as much Iron as chicken and 250 times more than brocolli. Adding some leafy green vegetables such as kale plus a glass of fresh fruit juice to your meal will greatly increase your iron absorption too.

Getting out and getting fitter

THE WORST of the winter weather appears to be behind us, so it’s time to get outdoors into the fresh air and enjoy some of the glorious scenery our area offers. To make the enjoyment even better, why not join in with some like-minded enthusiasts on a guided walk in or around the Jalon Valley area. Vall de Pop U3A offer their members the choice of two groups walking each week. On a Wednesday the walks are completed by lunchtime, whilst the Thursday walkers enjoy a full days hike.

The walks may include some hills, but are never too strenous and provide an ideal opportunity to increase fitness levels and mobility. Those attending the full day walks are asked to take along a packed lunch and plenty of water, whilst the morning groups need just water and perhaps a snack to boost energy. All walkers need to wear good walking footwear, weather-proof clothing and maybe take along a lightweight walking stick or pole.

Starting points for each walk are e-mailed a few days in advance and are generally within forty five minutes travelling distance of Jalon. Once the walk is complete members normally convene in a local bar or cafe to share the experience and make friends.

Workout with the housework DON’T have time to exercise?

Don’t worry, just do the housework.

By Gemma Quinn A new study has found that you can burn off more than 2000 calories a week by doing the household chores such as cleaning the bath, doing the washing and hoovering the house which is the equivalent of doing a gym session.

The findings also researched which chores are best for working out certain areas of the body.

So what jobs around the house are the most beneficial to burn calories and tone up?

Scrubbing the bath 100 calories can be burned off by using a bit of elbow grease when cleaning the bath for 15 minutes which is roughly the same as thirty jumping squats. This chore is great for toning arms and shoulder muscles.

Laundry Factoring in loading and unloading the washing machine, hanging up the clothes and putting them away, doing the laundry can burn 78 calories which is the same as doing 100 sit-ups.

Washing up Spending 15 minutes a night scrubbing away at the dishes can burn more than 500 calories over a week, around the same as swimming 2,500m.

Hoovering Giving the carpets a good clean can burn 90 calories in half an hour, which is the same as 15 minutes of kick-boxing.

Depending on the size of your house, hoovering can also get you nearer to the daily recommendation of walking 10,000 steps.

Mopping and sweeping Cleaning the floors for 30 minutes can burn 145 calories.

Gardening Half an hour of pottering around in the garden can burn 213 calories, which is same as 45 minutes of cycling on flat terrain.

Digging works your shoulder and abdominal muscles.

Looking to an early Spring COLD winter days used to be my least favourite time of year, now I love looking through seed catalogues and planning this year’s spring’s veggie or flower garden. I guess that’s where the expression “gardeners are the forever optimists” came from. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that new growth sprouting up out of the ground in the spring!

The first official day of spring is March 20th, but the effects of warmer weather and brighter days this winter means spring could be early.

Go outside and hunt for signs of spring as part of your daily Green Hour this month. Here are some “spring things” to look and listen for: budding trees and flowers, crocuses, daffodils, newly arriving bird species, nest building, caterpillars, ducks flying overhead, rainy days, worms on the pavement.

As soon as you see them… get planting!

For the veg growers amongst us, it time to look at planting: Tomatoes, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Corn, Cucumbers, Lettuce, Melons, Onions, Peppers and Herbs that love the heat: basil, oregano, thyme and sage.

For the flowery persons, spring means plants like: Lungwort ‘Diana Clare’, Bishop’s hat ‘Sulphureum’, Wallflower ‘Bowles’s Mauve’, Eastern cyclamen, Downy clematis, Daffodil ‘Jetfire’, Tulip ‘Spring Green’, Dog’s tooth violet ‘Pagoda’, Magnolia ‘Leonard Messel’ and Grape hyacinth ‘Valerie Finnis’.

Tips for the newbie Spanish gardener WHETHER you are new to Spain or have just moved to a new area and were wondering how to go about your garden, here are a few tips to help you on your way.

Try to use available natural material to build your flower beds. Local rock and stone will look much nicer than brick or other fabricated material.

If your garden is on a mountainside, don’t make a path which goes straight from top to bottom. A winding path will be easier to build and easier to negotiate.

If you don’t want bare concrete but are on a budget, cement the odd flat stepping stone in place and fill the gaps with gravel – it’s much cheaper than paving.

If you don’t want to spend your whole life with a hosepipe in your hand, then install a watering system (or three).

Prune Lantana, Oleander and Hibiscus any time from November through February.

Wear gloves to prune Lantana, Oleander and to cut cacti as many people suffer allergic reactions to these.

Lantana seeds and Oleander leaves are highly poisonous to animals.

English bulbs will grow here, but plant them early as they’re likely to flower far ahead of when you might expect.

For winter colour, use bedding plants in pots; you can buy petunias and other common bedding plants all the year round.

There are often high winds on the Spanish Costas. If your garden is exposed don’t plant tender plants but go for hardy ones which don’t mind the wind.

Don’t overwater citrus trees once they have become established. They don’t really need any additional water once they’ve reached full size.

A rustic touch that serves a purpose DRY-STONE walls can be a beautiful addition to your garden, and unlike bricks, the materials can be found readily available cheaply, or even for free if you’re lucky enough to live in the Spanish countryside.

The list of materials you will need to build any size or shape of dry-stone wall are: No 1, Stone. That’s it! Nothing more is needed well apart from your imagination that is.

Dry-stone walling is made by stacking stones without (wet) mortar to hold them together. Stone walls are strong and attractive and can last hundreds of years. But if you decide you don’t like them, you can just take them down and build them up again somewhere else. Let’s take a closer look at how they work: A brick wall is made from regular stacks of identically shaped blocks locked together with a gritty adhesive called mortar. A dry-stone wall is much more natural: it’s little more than a vertical stack of stones laid together slowly and carefully so they lock together under their own weight. Brick walls need mortar to hold them up because they often reach high in the air, whereasdry-stone walls are used mainly for fencing in animals or marking out the edges of a garden, so they seldom need to go higher than 1–1.5 meters.

By choosing the stones carefully and packing them tightly together with very thoughtful design, you can make a really strong structure that’s completely selfsupporting. Apart from looking great, it will provide excellent shelter for livestock and habitats for rock plants.

How to avoid DIY disasters DIY can be full of pitfalls for the inexperienced amateur, and mistakes can be both expensive and time consuming to solve. Here are the most common problems amateurs stumble across and how to avoid them.

1. Use a Spirit Level Simple tasks such as fixing a shelf to a wall may seem like a five minute job. But, time saved by not establishing a level, could later mean ornaments and books fall over or slide straight off. Synthetic brushes work perfectly for DIY projects and rarely lose their shape, unlike the natural alternatives.

6. Protect edges Masking tape and old sheets are your friends and the five minutes you use putting them in place will save hours of cleaning up paint stains after the job is done.

7. Buy enough materials It’s always better to have a little paint left over than to end up with patches exposing the need to stop halfway through the job and rush to the shop for more.You will always use it in the future. This works opposite when cutting materials such as wood, wallpaper or carpets.

Check every measurement before making cuts and remember less is more, you can always cut off a little extra but if you cut too short you will end up wasting time and money.

8.Prepare in advance Always vacuum thoroughly before painting. Dust left floating in the air will surely to stick to any wet paint ruining your finish. Leave dust sheets down until the paint has completely dried.

Look, don’t touch LONDON’S Classic Car Show was a cracking success. Tens of thousands of people swarmed through the showcase event at the city’s Excel centre from Feb 23-26 gawping at the legendary cars on display and catching a glimpse of motoring heroes in the flesh.

By Matthew Elliott Legends of LeMans Emanuele Pirro and Derek Bell kicked off the proceedings, while Dario Franchitti was drafted in by Ferrari to cut the ribbon on 21 tribute cars with a total worth of roughly €150 million.

As for the classic cars, well there was a terrific variety.

Spectators could find a heavily guarded €50 million plus Ferrari 250 GT parked just metres away from a 1970 Ford Escort designed to grind through the torturous 25,000km London to Mexico rally.

There was also a 1973 Ford Capri 3000 GXL that had less than 5,000 miles on the clock, a gorgeous Jaguar E-Type and a Lotus 21 Climax formerly raced

Bzzzz It’s a Vespa!

The scooter was invented in 1947 as a low cost alternative to the automobile in war-ravaged Europe – it was designed as transport for the masses and it caught on so quickly that it became one of the great transport phenomena to sweep the world in the 20th century.

The Vespa (which means “wasp” in Italian) was the result of Enrico Piaggio’s determination to create a viable alternative to the automobile for the masses. As the war drew to a close, Enrico studied every possible solution to get production in his plants going again.

Piaggio was founded in Genoa in 1884 by twenty-year-old Rinaldo Piaggio.

The first activity of Rinaldo’s factory was luxury ship fitting.

But by the end of the century, Piaggio was also producing

rail carriages, goods vans, luxury coaches and engines, trams and special truck bodies. World War I brought a new diversification that was to distinguish Piaggio activities for many decades.

The company started producing aeroplanes and seaplanes.

At the same time, new plants were springing up. In 1917 Piaggio bought a new plant in Pisa, and four years later it took over a small plant in Pontedera which first became the centre of aeronautical production (propellers, engines and complete aircraft) and then, after World War II, witnessed the birth of the iconic Vespa.

The war, a radical watershed for the entire Italian economy, was equally important for Piaggio. The Pontedera plant built the state-of-the-art fourengine P 108 equipped with a 1,500-bhp Piaggio engine in passenger and bomber versions. However Piaggio’s aeronautical plants in Tuscany (Pontedera and Pisa) were important military targets and on August 31, 1943 they were razed to the ground by Allied bombers, after the retreating Germans had already mined the pillars of the buildings and irrevocably damaged the plants.

Superbike Champ

By Matthew Elliott KAWASAKI rider Jonathan Rea kicked off his World Superbike defence by winning both races at Australia’s Phillip Island circuit. The Northern Irish-man won a thrilling Race 1 on Saturday February 25, edging Chaz Davies by barely a metre, following up with another flash finish victory on Sunday’s Race 2.

The 30-year-old has now opened up a ten point lead in the rankings over Welshman Davies, and Tom Sykes of England. Marco Melandri of Italy came in third place in the weekend’s race. Rea is now gunning to win the Superbike World Championship for a record third consecutive time, having stormed to victory in 2015 and 2016.

Ferrari have unveiled the car with which they will contest the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship. The SF70H was uncovered at the Italian team’s Fiorano circuit on Friday.

With it, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen will be bidding to improve on Ferrari’s third place in last year’s constructors’ standings, as well as their own respective fourth and sixth places in the table.

With 2017’s new rules set to make cars significantly quicker than in 2016, Ferrari have concentrated their development efforts on finding the right compromise between downforce and aerodynamic resistance, or drag, on the SF70H. Its lengthened nose and arrow-shaped front wing are a consequence of the regulations, as is the obvious fin on the engine cover and the more complex aero appendages ahead of the air intakes on the sidepods, whose unusual shape was designed in harmony with the front crash structure.

Visible at the front is a duct that has an aerodynamic role, while behind the driver, the roll-hoop, which incorporates the engine air intake has been completely redesigned. Also updated is the suspension layout, which still retains a push rod design at the front with pull rods at the rear.

The hubs and wheel nuts have been redesigned to facilitate the work of the mechanics when changing wheels during the pit stops. Finally, also as a function of the expected increase in performance this year, the power-steering and braking systems have been upsized.

Drive Relax Mode

PEUGEOT are setting the bar high for estate cars with their new concept design. What makes this car, set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, different is its incredible driving modes on offer.

It can be driven manually or in autonomous mode by the car computer. Drivers who prefer being behind the wheel can choose two modes, Drive Boost and Drive Relax.

The car, dubbed ‘Instinct’, uses artificial intelligence to ‘learn’ the drivers behaviour and adapt accordingly. So the car might read your diary and see that you’ve just come out of the gym. It’ll then change its operating system to ‘Relax’ which is a form of joint driver and computer driving which allows you to relax on the way home.

For instance the car might take over navigation, allowing you to focus purely on manoeuvers. The car can also read traffic conditions and send warnings to your phone encouraging you to leave the meeting or bar before the roads are congested.

There is also a virtual passenger who can order cinema tickets or buy shopping online through voice instructions. Or offer a bit of company, or someone to shout at after a rough day.

Piece of Pop History

By Matthew Elliott JUST a few months after his death a Range Rover infamously crashed by George Michael has gone on sale on eBay. The 2002-built 4x4 has already attracted hundreds of bids and is expected to sell for more than it cost new, roughly €75,000. Similar second-hand Range Rovers sell today for around €7,000.

The V8 powered car has had just three owners, first belonging to Michael’s father, then the Wham! sensation himself, before being snapped up by its current owner in 2015. It has less than 80,000 miles on the clock and has already secured itself a place in pop history.

In 2010 the singer, with a notorious history of drug-induced car crashes, ploughed the Range Rover into a Snappy Snaps photo shop in North London after partying at a Gay Pride event. After his death on Christmas Day 2016 hundreds of fans posted tributes and flowers outside the store, making it an unlikely memorial site.

Ready, set, sail!

31st Edition of the regatta ‘200 miles to two’.

The 31st edition of the 200 miles to two sets sail out of Altea on Friday 3rd March.

The 200 miles to two is a regatta organised by the Nautical Club of Altea. The route departs from Altea for Ibiza, with participants then bordering Formentera before heading back to Altea.

This year, the regatta plays host to participants from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, Andalusia and the Valencian Community with approximately fifty high-level vessels competing.

In previous years, the event has had among its participants great names in Spanish sailing such as Guillermo Altadill (current champion of the race in real time) and Toni Guiu.

This year is no different, with paralympic sailor Rafa Andarias taking part for the first time. The Javea born debutante is known as a great connoisseur of the Costa Blanca waters where he has been sailing for more than 15 years. With two paralympic campaigns behind him, Andarias is on top form and is currently No. 9 in the world and European Champion in Paralympic Class 2.4m.

For Andarias, who suffers from a disability in his lower limbs, the 200 miles to two will be his greatest challenge to date, as he will compete on equal terms with all participants.

Andarias will team with the experienced sailor, Pedro Servet aboard the Alvedro II. This veteran boat, Bavaria 46 Cruiser, has competed in the 200 miles to two for five years now and will compete as usual, under the umbrella of the Yacht Club of Javea.

The start of the race is scheduled for 12pm on Friday.

Benitachell Bowls Club Northern League Monday 27th Feb. BBC Jaguars v El Cid Sabres The sun was shining, on probably the best day of the year so far, for the short drive North to El Cid, to play against the Sabres. A magnificent win for our Challenger team by 28 - 5, keeping them in the hunt for the title. The main team did not fare so well, losing by seven shots overall, 62 - 69, and gaining just two points. The Friendly team also put in a good performance with a 19 -12 victory.

BBC Tigers v Javea Opals On a warm sunny morning the Tigers were away to Javea Opals and came away with a 6-4 win. Well done all. A close game with Tigers winning with a shot difference of 68-60. Our Challenge team romped into an early lead and led by 11 shots at the half way stage.

The Opals came back fighting sharing the last nine ends but Tigers held on to win 19-11. Our Friendly team led from start to finish to win comfortably 28-8.

Well done, a good team performance.

BBC Lions v Javea Green Quartz On a lovely sunny morning we played against Javea Green Quartz who are breathing down our necks so we knew it would be a tough match. The main teams had a win 6 - 4 with a shot difference of 1. The Challengers had a good steady game winning 9 of the 18 ends but with a 6 on the 2nd end and another three 3's kept ahead to come out worthy 22 - 17 winners, very well done.

The route takes a round trip from Altea to Ibiza and back

Pego Golf Society SOCIETY members were delighted to see a beautiful day for the Singles Stableford Competition, with the sun shining and the wind very gentle at Oliva Nova on Tuesday February 21.

It was great to see a field of 41 players turn up. There were three guests on the day, George Smith, David Oram and John Porter. The guest prize was won by David Oram with 25 points.

In the main competition, the results were : Division one: 1st Peter Rapley with 38 points, handicap of 10.7. 2nd Derek Lindley with 37 Points, handicap of 14.2. 3rd Shaun O’Gorman with 35 Points, handicap of 5.3. 4th John Snelling with 34 Points, handicap of 10.4.

Division two: 1st Suzy Snelling with 37 Points, handicap of 18.4. 2nd Martin Livesey with 34 Points, handicap of 18.9. 3rd John Evans with 33 Points, handicap of 18.7. 4th Angus Muuir with 31 Points, handicap of 18.9.

The ‘Balls in the Water’ total was 94 and the prize was won by Angus Muir.

Nearest the Hole: Hole 5 Shaun O’Gorman, 0.63 metres with his second shot and hole 16 Angus Muir, 2.36 metres.

Paul Trigwell achieved the only ‘Two.’ Next week, the society are again at Oliva Nova, where a Pairs Texas Scramble Competition will be played.
