Tour operators keen TOUR operators at this week’s World Travel Market in London are keen to promote Almeria as a holiday destination, according to the provincial government. An administration delegation was at the threeday event, considered one of the most important international tourism fairs, as part of the government Tourist Action Plan. As well as showcasing the province’s beaches, natural parks, cuisine and important role in the movie industry at the Costa Almeria stand in the extensive Andalucia exhibition area, the delegation met with tour operators, online travel agents and airlines, including TUI Netherlands,

The delegation had already had dealings with a number of the compa-
nies, and said bringing in more tourists to Almeria, with an increase in the holiday offer in the province and by upping the number of connecting flights with European airports, were among the main topics discussed. Government Vice-President Javier A Garcia underlined the importance of the provincial tourism sector in terms of generating wealth and employment, saying his administration would continue working towards “closing new agreements with tour operators inside and outside the European Union and to take our destination increasingly further.” The UK is currently the main overseas market for the Almeria tourism industry.
Young voices against gender-based violence CHILDREN from six towns and cities will come together in Almeria later this month to draw up a manifesto against violence against women. Almeria City Council has organised the first Junior National Congress Against Gender-Based Violence as one of the initiatives in the lead-up to the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women. Around 50 school pupils from Vicar, Vera, Malaga, Murcia and Alcazar de San Juan in Ciudad Real will gather in the provincial capital on November 21 and 23. The mayor
of Almeria will read out the manifesto drawn up by the participating boys and girls, which will then be made available to all interested towns and cities. The aim of the congress is for the children to immerse themselves in the subject over the three days, looking at it from the perspective of education, family, media, social media and public administrations. The children will also create magnetic bracelets with clear messages against gender-based violence, which on Friday, November 23 will be given out in the Rambla and the Paseo de Almeria in the city centre.
A parallel initiative is the seventh Adolescent Views Municipal Competition of audiovisual works created by schoolchildren in the provincial capital. Around 600 pupils from 12 different schools have so far produced some 50 videos aimed at raising awareness among young people about doing away with inequality and violence against women. The competition is also organised by Almeria Council, with the support of the Almeria International Film Festival. The best videos will be screened at the Cervantes Theatre on November 22.
