Unconscious hiker rescued By Christophe de Chaume OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil rescued a hiker on Wednesday who fell unconscious after fainting near the Cala Media Luna beach in San Jose. The woman suffered a blackout and the Police, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection services attended the scene. The Emergency Services’ Communications Centre had been alerted to the incident by a member of the public, and after receiving the message the different units went to the ‘Half Moon’ site, in Nijar. There they found a woman of around 50 unconscious, and sources suggest she had hit her head on the ground before passing out. First aid was administered to her and she was then transferred to Torrecardenas hospital, where she is believed to be in a stable condition. The Guardia Civil advises that hikers should plan and prepare for their routes in detail, and that they should not go alone where possible.
STRETCHERED OFF: The woman was saved by the emergency services.
Touching tribute A LASTING memorial to young Gabriel Cruz, who died in suspicious circumstances in Nijar last February, is to be created in the pavement that surrounds La Ballena. ‘Welcome to Gabriel’s Whale’ the words that will be a constant reminder of ‘the little fish’ as he was known in Almeria, written in his own words, is to be stamped on the ground. This is being made possible with the help of a donation by marble company Cuellar, and the skills of local firm Jarquil. The City Council was keen to create a memorial to the little boy, whose violent death shocked the nation, and several options were considered before La Ballena was selected as the perfect spot for an inscription. The tribute is expected to be completed and installed at the mouth of the Rambla Federico Garcia Lorca by December of this year.
