Plans for the rivermouth THE regional government is set to compulsorily purchase 10,000 square metres of land at the Algar rivermouth in Al‐ tea. According to Spanish me‐ dia reports, the Generalitat has allocated €529,026 for an operation affecting eight plots between the l’Espigo and Cap Negret beaches. Five of these are catalogued as ru‐ ral land and three are public property, the same media sources said. Arcadi España, who heads the regional Territorial Poli‐ cies department, explained that the Generalitat intended to restore the zone to its nat‐ ural state, assisting the return of marsh birds currently ab‐ sent from the wetlands. His department foresees the “strategic withdrawal” of certain uses, including access and unauthorised parking, Es‐ paña said, in an oblique refer‐ ence to the motorhomes that persist in parking at the Algar river‐mouth.

CONSTITUTION DAY HONOURS MARIA ZARAGOZA LLORET and Barbara Perez Llinares re‐ ceived Benidorm’s Corporate Medal on December 6, Con‐ stitution Day. Both made history by becoming the munici‐ pality’s first women councillors in the Transition’s first democratic local elections in 1979, explained Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez. There was also institutional recognition for members of Benidorm’s lifesaving saving service. Alejan‐ dro Ortiz, Adam Pisarczyk, José Bautista and Daniel Jiméne. The four men put their own lives at risk in a ‘complex and complicated rescue’ when they went to the aid of a tourist who plummeted to the sea on accidentally falling from the Plaza de Santa Ana lookout point at Benidorm’s Castillo.
