New police vehicles TWO new police cars were presented to the Local Police by the mayor, Jose Alberto Armijo, and the councillor for Security and Transportation, Francisco Arce, accompanied by the chief of the Local Police, Francisco Iranzo. “To provide the means, in this case with two new vehicles, to the Local Police officers is to increase the safety of Nerjeños and Mareños,” stressed the councillor. “There are already six vehicles purchased by the council since the beginning of this mandate, two cars and four motorcycles, to which we must add the complete renewal of uniformity and protection material, thus fulfilling the commitment we acquired in its day.”

Two arrested DURING the night of August 12, neighbours in rural Paraje Catalina in the municipality of Riogordo spotted a suspicious vehicle near an unoccupied house and quickly reported it to the Local Police who rushed to the scene to check out what exactly was happening. They were able to catch two people aged 37 and 39 years old who lived in Malaga and Casabermeja. They were caught stealing building materials and tools from inside the property. The alleged perpetrators of the crimes had apparently broken windows and several doors to gain access to the house and vehicles at the property.

Beware the jellyfish

SO far this summer jellyfish had not caused too much trouble for bathers, but over the last few days more and more jellyfish have headed into several areas. “We knew that this summer could be good for jellyfish, be‐ cause in spring the conditions were perfect for their prolifera‐ tion,” said Jess Bellido, biologist of the Aula del Mar. The biolo‐ gist has highlighted that: “above average temperatures in the Alboran Sea, possibly, have made the breeding ground for these animals to reproduce.” Not too many jellyfish had been seen until a few days ago, but the expert has explained how the easterly wind, known as Levante, has brought jellyfish into the Costa del Sol area. “It is true that we have had some days of Levante in July and some could appear, but the poniente and the terral appeared quickly and removed them. Now we have had almost two weeks of more persistent Levante and this has meant that the jellyfish, which this summer are more abundant than usual, are arriving more easily to the beaches,” said Bellido. Over the last week more jellyfish have been seen invading the coastline of the province and different beaches have been affected to different extents. According to the expert: “They have been moving from east to west and right now where they are most present is on the west coast,” he also added that when the jellyfish arrive there is the potential for “thousands of specimens” to be seen.

APAA: Want to build a new shelter. THE APAA Nerja is appealing for help in find‐ ing a premises to build the charity’s new ani‐ mal shelter. The charity is searching for a plot of land to build an animal shelter on following an offer by one generous donor of €200,000 to create a place to care for Nerja’s needy animals. Sue Kiff, the Treasurer of the APAA, told the Eu‐ ro Weekly News the charity is appealing to any lo‐ cals who know of a good location for shelter. She told the EWN that since the APAA’s last refuge was closed in 2018 the charity has been housing the many animals in its care in foster homes and resi‐ dences, which are paid for by donations and the proceeds from the APAA’s Nerja charity shop. Ms Kiff said that a generous donor has now of‐ fered to spend €200,000 to buy the APAA a plot of land to build their new shelter, and even foot the bill to create kennels and the rest of the refuge. The charity is now looking for a plot of land in

Nerja and the surrounding areas, and is appealing to anyone who knows of an area. Ms Kiff told the EWN the plot had to be isolated so that noise from the shelter does not disturb neighbours and be within half an hour of the chari‐ ty’s vet in Nerja. The APAA is currently caring for around 50 cats and 80 dogs, many of which the charity pays for to stay at an animal residence in Torrox due to a lack of fosterers. Ms Kiff said the charity now needs more foster homes and also appealed for anyone who wants to foster an animal to contact the charity. To foster or donate, or to get in touch with the charity, contact 643 406 591, or visit the APAA’s charity shop on Calle el Chaparil 7, Nerja.
