CYCLE RIDE: Getting ready to depart on the challenge. WELL-WISHERS saw off participants in a charity cycle ride from Catalonia to Amsterdam which started in Mallorca and covers around 1,600 kilometres. On August 9, the Plaça Bernat de Santa Eugenia hosted the start of the Vic to Amsterdam charity challenge created by the Mallorcan association Chain Reaction, to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and to raise funds for the ELA association of the Balearics. The challenge, led by coach Alex Cirer, is to cycle 11 stages
in 11 days, from Vic (60 kilometres outside of Barcelona) to Amsterdam. The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness about ALS, which despite being the third most common neurodegenerative disease in Spain, is still largely unknown to most of society, even though this was the disease that claimed Stephen Hawking. Chain Reaction has launched a fundraising campaign for the ELA association of the Balearics at https://www.mi granodearena.org/reto/reto-vicmsterdam-en-bicicleta and it is
hoped to raise at least €5 for each kilometre travelled. A documentary of the journey directed by Joan Porcel will be filmed with the aim of publicising the project and raising awareness of charity, effort and self-improvement with regular updates available via Instagram @team chainreacion. The challenge saw the main rider and team setting off via car to the ferry in Palma which would take them to Barcelona and then on to Vic to start the daily stages through Spain, France, Belgium and Holland.

LITTLE RED BOOK
THE Species Protection Service has published the fourth edition of the Red Book of Vertebrates of the Balearic Islands. This is a publication that assesses the risk of extinction of 175 vertebrates based on the state of conservation and threats to populations, as well as actions taken to protect them. In this edition, the improvement in the conservation of 10 species is noted, among which are the Red Kite (Milvus milvus) and the European Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus). In addition, the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) is included for the first time, as the bird of prey arrived in Mallorca during a storm in 2008 while migrating from the peninsula to the African continent. Since then, a population has been established in the Serra de Tramuntana, where it coexists with the Black Vulture. Studies have allowed, in this new edition, a dozen taxa to leave the category of insufficient data, which increases knowl‐ edge about many species, including bats, reptiles and lizards. amphibians and cetaceans. The information is structured in files that contain the scientific and common name of each species, the category of threat in the Balearic Islands, global, state; pop‐ ulation characteristics, state and conservation problems, as well as actions taken and proposed preservation.
