UK travel rules for expats RESTRICTIONS: Spain remains on the UK’s amber list.

EXPATS travelling to the UK following the government’s announcement that Spain remains on its amber list still face some restrictions.

“If you have been fully vaccinated in Spain, you will not need to quarantine when you arrive in England or take a day eight test. You still need to take a Covid-19 test in the three days before you travel, book and take a day two test and complete a passenger locator form,” the British embassy in Madrid said.

Expats returning to the UK will also need to show that they have been vaccinated, “You

need to show your travel operator proof that you’ve been fully vaccinated with one of the authorised vaccines before you travel. This proof should be an EU Digital Covid Certificate for Europe, digital or paper certificate, showing you’ve had a full course of a European Medical Agency approved vaccination.

“As a precaution against the prevalence of the virus and variants in Spain, the UK is encouraging people travelling from Spain to use a PCR test for their pre-departure test,” the embassy added.

10yrs dedicated to protecting THE Civil Protection group enjoyed celebrating its 10th anniversary on Saturday, August 7. Several of the group members were presented with awards to mark their five and 10-year service. A posthumous recognition was also given to Paco Colomer Santander, who had been a precursor to the protection group.

Big jellyfish restricts bathing have had to be reinforced due to the number of jellyfish that have been spotted out of the water. Cleaning services have been reinforced with three workers and they have been busy removing jellyfish from the beach after they were washed ashore.

cleaning services which are carried out by the City Council have had to be intensified after bathers raised the alert over ‘big’ jellyfish being discovered.

Earlier in the day the number of jellyfish had not been considered sufficient to restrict bathing, but this has now changed.

Vuelta’s Velefique challenge ALMERIA’S Alto de Velefique mountain pass will be seen in 154 million homes during the Vuelta a España on August 22.

This is one of the cycling world’s three Grand Tour races, together with Italy’s Giro and the Tour de France, and legendary cyclist Alberto Contador - who has won them all - explains in a video the secrets, attractions and challenges that await the cyclists on their 930-metre Velefique ascent.

The documentary is the outcome of an alliance between Contador, Eurosport and the provincial council’s Costa de Almeria holiday destination project.

THE provincial government continues to up‐ grade the roads that connect Almeria’s 103 municipalities.

Angel Escobar, the Diputacion’s vice‐presi‐ dent, recently visited the Gador to see first‐ hand improvements to the town’s principal access road that were included in the Al‐3411 project that links the municipality to the A‐348 and Los Millares archaeological site.

Claims paid THE Junta de Andalucia is advancing payments of more than €7.6 million in agricultural insurance claims to the region’s farmers, cattle breeders and forestry owners affected by bad weather and natural disasters.

More than €1.2 million of this amount will be paid to 1,670 Almeria farmers and producers.

Keep the Green Flag flying CARBONERAS is competing in a nationwide ‘friendly’ to obtain a Green Flag from non‐profitmak‐ ing Ecovidrio which collects glass for recycling.

Last year, Carboneras recy‐ cled approximately 114 tons of glass, amounting to 14.1 kilos of glass for every registered inhabi‐ tant.

Forty‐one of the 128 Spanish municipalities taking part in this year’s Ecovidrio campaign are lo‐ cated in Andalucia. All hope to be awarded a Green Flag for in‐ creasing the amount of glass left in the recycling igloos placed in their streets.

The hospitality trade gener‐ ates 52 per cent of Spain’s sin‐ gle‐use glass containers and is key to the transition towards a circular economy where recy‐ cling is prioritised and waste kept to a minimum.

To make it easier for the sec‐ tor to separate used glass this year, Ecovidrio is installing new containers and providing free bins so that participating busi‐ nesses can take empties to recy‐ cling points.

July 2022 date for Dreambeach THE Dreambeach organisers have set the date for next year’s five‐day festival in Villaricos.

Cancelled in 2020 and again in 2021 owing to Covid restrictions, the techno festival will not be held in August as usual but on July 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 instead.

“Even after the ‘bicho’ has been defeated, the Covid‐19 pandemic will make permanent changes in attitudes towards huge crowds and saturated venues,” a communique explained.

“We listened carefully to the institutions, public, business‐owners and the hospitality industry and

together we took the best option by avoiding the August crowds and choosing a week in mid‐July when there are fewer visitors to the Almeria coast.”

This was a major change, the organisers ac‐ knowledged, but emphasised that it was made to benefit Dreamers’ security, confidence in health regulations and the environment.

Dreamers who have already acquired tickets will be able to use these for the 2022 event or, if un‐ able to attend, they have until August 20 to apply for a refund on the www.dreambeach.es website.

ALBOX’S La Redia roundabout with its replica of the façade of the Santuario de la Virgen del Saliente is practically finished.

When work on the roundabout began last March, residents speculated that the myste‐ rious structure looked remarkably like the Sanctuary. Their suspicions were later con‐ firmed and the town hall announced that it would be the “pride of residents and visitors to the municipality.” The sanctuary is located 19 kilometres from Albox and in normal years the September 8 fiestas attract thou‐ sands who follow the course of the Rambla watercourse to the 18th century monastery.

Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas, who is still recovering from Covid‐19, announced on the town hall’s social media that the round‐ about should be ready by September 8.

HUERCAL‐OVERA’S Local Police recently rescued an 87‐year‐old woman who had left her home in El Ruchete at around 4am. Her family explained that she had been missing for around eight hours and was frail, both physically and mentally.

Police began to scour the area without delay, fear‐ ing she would be seriously affected by the high tem‐ peratures and possibly suffer a fall in the difficult and rocky terrain. Guided by the missing woman’s family and neighbours, officers searched on foot and also used a drone to search agricultural land, watercours‐ es, gullies and paths. Two hours later, the elderly woman was found approximately 600 metres from her home, lying on the ground near a steep gully with bruised arms and face.

Clearly disorientated, she was immediately trans‐ ferred to La Inmaculada hospital, police sources said afterwards.

Town hall buys up land ROQUETAS Town Hall has acquired a 30,000‐square metre piece of land in the town centre for €1.35 billion.

The plot located between the Gran Plaza shopping cen‐ tre and the Teatro Auditorio provides the local govern‐ ment with land for public use instead of lucrative private building, Roquetas mayor Gabriel Amat said.

“I am very satis‐ fied. The conditions were very advanta‐ geous as the land had an urban devel‐ opment charge in the town hall’s favour,” he re‐ vealed.

“Opposition coun‐ cillors criticised the purchase very harsh‐ ly, without thinking about the benefits to residents and vis‐ itors,” Amat added.

The mayor praised the “great work” carried out by all town hall depart‐ ments and their em‐ ployees in ensuring that the purchase could be carried out.

This large plot of land was now a mu‐ nicipal asset with multiple potential uses, thanks to its privileged location, the mayor added.

It could be used as a fair site as well as countless other ac‐ tivities, including the weekly open‐air market, he suggest‐ ed.

“Without a doubt this will be very beneficial for our municipality, an open space free of building to be en‐ joyed by our resi‐ dents as well as those who visit us,” Amat declared.

Residents fight chicken farm PARTALOA residents are fighting a proposed 35,000-broiler chicken farm just over one kilometre north of Piedra Amarilla village.

The land involved is within 500 metres of residential houses, while a group of eight homes is in a direct line-of-sight less than 300 metres away.

The scheme is neither an extension of a traditional chicken farmer’s family business nor a traditional agricultural activity for this area.

It would be an industrial-scale operation producing 240,000 broiler chickens each year, very close to houses and producing appalling smells affecting the whole municipality.

Eighty concerned local residents who recently met at the Courtyard Bar in Piedra Amarilla unanimously agreed to set up the Eastern Partaloa Residents Association (EPRA).

“This was also recommended by our expert advisors,” Stephen Tucker explained to the Euro Weekly News.

EPRA will work closely with the town hall, representing residents of eastern Partaloa who would be most adversely affected by the project.

“We hope that residents of all nationalities will support this initiative which affects all of the municipality regardless of their country of origin,” Stephen said.

“The site would be serviced by huge amounts of heavy traffic on inadequate roads and use more than three million litres of water each year.”

A GoFundMe appeal, “Say NO to the proposed chicken farm,” has been set up to finance the campaign, submit objections or, if necessary, support EPRA’s expert advisors in taking court action if needed.

Guardia Civil to the rescue ALMERIA Guardia Civil swung into action to help out a 49‐year‐old man who had been hik‐ ing and ended up in trouble in El Layon, in the municipality of Bayarque. The man had bro‐ ken his ankle and had to be carried by stretch‐ er by the Guardia Civil and Levante firefighters for over an hour.

The Guardia Civil first learned the man was in trouble after a call for help was raised advising that the man had been hiking before having broken his ankle.

Officers rushed to help the man and met with the injured man’s wife and daughters. His family were able to tell them that the man was near an entrance to an abandoned iron mine two kilometres away over treacherous terrain.

SAVED: Stretchered out of the area.

The Levante Fire Brigade worked with the Guardia Civil officers and the man soon had his ankle immobilised and was placed on a stretch‐ er for transport. The rescuers had to carry him for over an hour back to the vehicles where he was then evacuated to Granada’s hospital de Baza.

Saved at sea THE Salvamento Maritimo swung into action yet again in the waters of Almeria after a skiff was report‐ ed drifting with 16 people aboard.

The Maritime rescue service were able to rescue 16 men of North African origin. According to reports all of the men were of legal age and were discovered to be in good health despite being discov‐ ered drifting at sea. They were dis‐ covered around 13 miles south of the Cabo de Gata in Almeria, drift‐

ing in a small seagoing boat.

According to a spokesman for the Salvamento Maritimo, the ser‐ vice received a message at around 10.37am on Thursday, August 5.

The call was received from people who had been travelling on a plea‐ sure boat and had spotted the skiff drifting out at sea.

The Salvamar Spica boat was quickly mobilised by the coordina‐ tion centre in Almeria and sent to the rescue.

English is harder to learn than Spanish ALMOST 56 per cent of our readers think that English is harder to learn as a for‐ eigner than Spanish.

Despite most of the peo‐ ple who took part in our on‐ line survey being English speakers, they admitted that for a foreigner, English is probably harder to learn than Spanish is for them.

Just over 38 per cent consider that Spanish is harder and the remaining participants said that both languages are equally hard.

One reader said “I am German and would say they are of a similar level of difficulty,” while another reader said it “depends on how old you are.” It seems for those who find learning Spanish difficult, the verbs are the main culprits, with one reader saying “to sim‐ ply communicate well, En‐ glish is harder, but to read and write perfectly and at a higher level; Spanish. Those verbs are killers.”

Another said the most difficult thing for her about Spanish is “I can ask ques‐ tions, but have no idea of the answer!”

Summer Triathlon for local families THE summer triathlon school in Almeria is bringing families to‐ gether and will run until late Au‐ gust. Around 50 young people will be attending the excellent initiative which brings sport to the area and family tourism too.

Rocio Sanchez, councillor for the Presidency, visited the sum‐ mer school to see exactly what it brings to the area.

Sanchez spoke of the upcom‐ ing competitions and said: “the initiative and the support that the town hall is providing, which is not only reflected in the sport of these children but also in being able to visit the town of Roquetas and participate in the upcoming Triathlon competitions that we are going to carry out.

“Therefore, from the Consisto‐ ry we want to say that we are at the side of our young people, of our sport, and we will do every‐ thing necessary to make it clear that Roquetas is a municipality of sport, tourism and services. I would also like to thank the presi‐

dent of the hoteliers, who has worked tirelessly to make this Summer School a reality today.”

A triathlon competition will be held on August 27 for both chil‐ dren who have joined in the school and other people who wish to compete.

Non collection of fines THE Almeria mayor, Ramon Fernandez‐Pacheco, announced on Monday, August 9, that the city council does not plan to collect fines that Local Police officers imposed during the first State of Alarm that began on March 18 in 2020 due to the coronavirus pan‐ demic.

In July the Constitutional Court decided that the State of Alarm confinement was unconstitutional. This included limiting people’s mobility in public spaces and the Ministry of Health’s ability to modify or extend the measures on commercial activity.

“If the State of Alarm was illegal, it makes little sense for us to charge for infringing something that in theory should not have oc‐ curred, at least not in those terms,” said the mayor of Almeria.

He also explained that processes will be put in place to ensure that any fines that have already gone through will also be reversed.

Johnny Depp to receive Donostia IN something which is consid‐ ered a controversial decision, the film festival has decided to give the Donostia Award to ac‐

tor Johnny Depp. The award is a lifetime achievement award and honours ‘outstanding con‐ tributions to the film world.’

Spain and Med countries worked least in Covid SPAIN, Greece and Italy worked the least hours during the Covid-19 pandemic, EU statistics reveal.

In 2020, the number of actual hours worked in the main job in the EU decreased by 12 per cent when compared with 2019. This decrease can be explained by the measures taken in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which led many people to alternate between periods of work and periods of absence from work in 2020. As a result, more people worked fewer hours than usual and were absent from their jobs.

At the national level, there was a decline in hours worked across all Member States. The highest declines were recorded for Greece 19.7 per cent, Spain -19.5 per cent, Portugal and Italy both 19.0 per cent.

The decision is somewhat controversial due to the fact that last year a judge ruled that Depp had assaulted Amber Heard, his ex‐wife, on more than one occa‐ sion.

The award will be presented on September 22, at the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian.

Depp has been called “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors,” and has appeared in a stunning variety of films throughout his acting career. Other actors hon‐ oured with this award include Viggo Mortensen, who was the honoured recipient last year.

Other winners include Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins, Anto‐ nio Banderas, and Glenn Close.

Revenge fight ends in stabbing GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a 39-year-old after receiving a call from the 062 Almeria Communications Centre (COS) which alerted them to a fight which had broken out at a hotel in Gador, and that a person had been stabbed.

Officers rushed to the scene and discovered the injured person was bleeding profusely after being stabbed in the thigh. Emergency medical services attended the scene and took over the medical care.

Officers were able to discover during the investigation that the fight broke out due to a previous fight where a relative of the arrested person had been injured, and arrested the person.

Beer brands dominate FRIDAY, August 6 was 'World Beer Day', and according to data from a study carried out

by Tiendeo.com, Spanish beers dominate 60 per cent of the national beer map, re‐ portedly followed by Dutch and German beers.

Their report was based specifically on the brands of beers that Spaniards had in‐ teracted online with over the last twelve months, which re‐ vealed the trend of a passion for national beers among Spanish drinkers, along with a wide range of locally pro‐ duced beers‐ both national and international ‐ that re‐

spond to the new consumer demands, who are committed to local production, sustain‐ ability, and traceability.

It is clear from the findings of the report that as far as beer drinking is concerned, the Spanish reveal a certain patriotism, and remain faith‐ ful to traditional Spanish brands ‐ even when some have been bought by foreign multinationals ‐ which is re‐ flected in the presence of more than 49 national brands in the study results, equiva‐ lent to 60 per cent of the mar‐ ket of national interest to beer drinkers.

Imported beers represent‐ ed the remaining 40 per cent, with some world‐famous brands appearing, such as Dutch brands, Heineken, and Amstel, who accounted for 21 per cent of the total, along with German beers on three per cent, and Mexican beers at one point five per cent.

Out of the total search re‐ sults, a massive 99 per cent were global beer giants, but out of the searches, Mahou accumulated 20 per cent of the total, Amstel ‐ which be‐ longs to the Heineken group ‐ had 14.8 per cent, and San Miguel had 11.6 per cent.

Mothers’ employment gap THE presence of children in the house‐ hold affects the employment rate of men and women differently and wom‐ en with children in Spain most likely to unemployed compared to other mothers with children in the EU. Overall, 72.2 per cent of women and

90.0 per cent of men with children aged 25‐54 were employed in the EU in 2020. In that same age category, but for people with no children, wom‐ en had a higher employment rate (76.8 per cent), while men had a lower employment rate (80.9 per cent).

Rural depopulation documentary A NEW 20‐episode reality TV show, Ruralmind, about Spain’s rural villages will be aired on YouTube and Twitch in October. It will feature 40 contestants who must launch and develop ideas to tackle depopula‐ tion in villages with less

than 5,000 inhabitants.

The show’s co‐founder, Patricia Garcia Gomez, said the goal was to radically change people’s views of rural life: “We see the vil‐ lage as a place for rural tourism and agriculture, but never as a 21st‐century vil‐

lage, a place where start‐ ups of all kinds can be launched.”

The contestants will be sent to three villages in northern and central Spain that have a decreasing pop‐ ulation where business plans will be made, with the help of mentors. The con‐ testants will eventually be whittled down to three win‐ ners who will each receive seed money of €3,000 (£2,550), with the hopes of showing a new perspective on rural life.

“There are thousands of new businesses that can be launched from small vil‐ lages that didn’t exist 50 years ago,” Gomez said, pointing out companies that use technology to monitor livestock or are focused on social media marketing, “That’s what we want to convey,” she continued.

Alejandro Hernandez, the show’s other co‐founder, said: “We’re always looking for the next Silicon Valley, but perhaps in the rural world, you can be just as in‐ novative or even better.”

Killer whale damages SOUNDING like something out of a Steven Spielberg film, earlier this month, three sepa‐ rate incidents off the coast of Barbate, in Cadiz province, saw three boats damaged, the oc‐ cupants of which had to subse‐ quently be given assistance by the Maritime Rescue services, after incidents involving killer whales.

In the first incident, the Stel‐ la Maris contacted the rescue services at around 2.50pm, asking for assistance, in need of being towed ashore, report‐ ing damage to its rudder due to a run‐in with a school of killer whales, at which point the Salvamar Enif rescue boat was mobilised to the location, and proceeded to tow the stricken vessel back to the port of Barbate.

Shortly after the first rescue, at around 3pm, another craft, this time named El Tazar, also requested assistance, report‐ ing a similar incident with some killer whales, although in this case it did not need tow‐ ing, and the Salvamar Arcturus rescue boat was deployed.

Both incidents occurred around 1.5 miles off the shore by the Atlanterra urbanisation, but then, at around 6.45pm, another call came from the sailboat Le Veteran, which was located around 2.5 miles off the coast of Faro Camarinal, once again reporting a clash with killer whales which had left them without a rudder,

Spain at risk of deadly forest fires

UPCOMING weather conditions and increasingly dry soil could put Spain at risk of deadly forest fires like the “catas‐ trophic wave of fires of great magnitude” seen recently in Turkey, Greece, Italy and the Balkans. The government is urging residents and holidaymakers to exercise “caution and care, since it is a time of high risk and extreme caution is required.”

Seven “big fires” occurred between July 12 and July 27, in Castilla‐La Mancha, Andalucia and Catalonia. Two of them in Ciudad Real, in the municipalities of Corral de Calatrava and Almaden, one in Cuenca and another in Albacete.

Ninety‐five per cent of forest fires are by human careless‐ ness. “We must pay all our attention to avoiding them, pro‐ tecting our soil is everyone's job,” the government said.

PEOPLE over 65 years old, who have been vaccinated and have had Covid have been found to have high levels of antibodies, which protect them three months after having been vaccinated.

Unfortunately, over 65s who have not had Covid as well as having been fully vaccinated, their immunity drops. A study revealed that these people need to be vaccinated with a third dose.

Third jab plans Buenaventura Clotet, the author of the study spoke to the Espejo Publico programme and explained. “Our study, carried out on 100 people over the age of 65, shows that those who have re‐ ceived the vaccine but have not previ‐

ously had the disease have a lower re‐ sponse than those who have had the disease and have been vaccinated,” she said.

The court‐approved restrictions are in place until August 16, but may be ex‐ tended in some areas if the rate of infec‐ tion does not improve. However, as more people are vaccinated the plan is to “re‐ sponsibly” get back to normal, Puig said on August 3.

Toxic cat food fear ACCORDING to reports, vets in the UK have been inundated by cases of pancytopenia. This can cause serious illness in cats and the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has announced that in the past few months a shocking 500 plus cases have been seen.

A recall was put out for food made by Fold Hill Foods, in mid‐ June. This includes batches of Ap‐ plaws and AVA (a Pets at Home brand), and also batches of Sainsbury’s hypoallergenic cat foods. The RVC and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) are inves‐ tigating, but so far they cannot

Spain’s agri-food power SPAIN’S agri‐food sector is the fourth largest agri‐food power in the EU and a world leader in products such as olive oil, pork, citrus fruits and wine. Spain is also one of the largest suppliers of fresh fruit and vegetables to Europe, said Luis Planas, Minister for Agriculture.

“It is a sector of great social and economic importance that con‐ tributes around 11 per cent of our country’s GDP and generates 2.8 million jobs,” he said.

Police arrest Poles THE Guardia Civil, National Po‐ lice and Polish police have dis‐ mantled a gang of drug traffick‐ ers operating in Poland and Spain.

Nine people were arrested and two cannabis plantations with more than 1,400 plants along with 25 kilograms of mari‐ juana‐derived products pre‐ pared for distribution were un‐ covered.

The gang planned to ship more than 1.2 tons of cannabis worth almost €5.3 million into Poland. Police seized assets, in‐ cluding luxury villas in Spain, val‐ ued at almost €5 million.

Boris wants ‘Big Bang’ PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak have called on the UK’s institutional in‐ vestors to “seize the moment for a ‘Investment Big Bang’” to boost Britain’s long‐term growth.

“It’s time we recognised the quality that other coun‐ tries see in the UK, and back ourselves by investing more money into the companies and infrastructure that will drive growth and prosperity across our coun‐ try,” Johnson and Sunak wrote in an open letter pub‐ lished this month.

“We want to see UK pension savers benefitting from the fruits of UK ingenuity and enterprise, being given the opportunity to back British success stories, and secure higher returns and better retirements,” they added.

Daily consumption of alcohol was found to increase with age.

The lowest share of those who con‐ sumed alcohol the most frequently ‐ that is every day ‐ was recorded among those aged 15 to 24 (1.0 per cent) while the highest share in people of 75 or over (16 per cent).

However, the latter age group also accounted for the highest share that never consumed alcohol or had not consumed any in the past 12 months (40.3 per cent).

Daily alcohol intake was the most frequent in Portugal, with a fifth (20.7 per cent) of the population consuming alcohol every day, fol‐ lowed by Spain (13.0 per cent) and Italy (12.1 per cent). In contrast, the lowest share was around 1.0 per cent in Latvia and Lithuania.

TWO British nationals have been arrested in the north of Spain, after a vehicle they were travelling in was found to have 283kg of marihuana hidden on board, as they were waiting to board the Santander ferry to cross back to the United Kingdom, on July 21.

The incident occurred as the two men were in the cus‐ toms area of Santander Port, waiting to drive their van onto the ferry, when their vehicle attracted the suspicions of Customs officers, who subsequently carried out a search of the van, though at first, they did not find anything out of the ordinary, with the police sniffer dogs not making any dis‐ covery.

It was at this point that Customs Surveillance Officials of the Tax Agency in Cantabria and the Basque Country, and members of the Cantabrian Guardia Civil, belonging to the Fiscal Section of the Santander Pier, proceeded to inspect

the vehicle with specialised equipment ‐ known as ‘Medusa’ ‐ that is designed to detect illicit goods. ‘Medusa’ carried out a radiological inspection on vehicles, and in this instance, it detected 283kg of marihuana inside 251 pack‐ ages that had been stowed in the front part of the van, camouflaged in cardboard boxes, in the hope of avoiding detection, a location that was inaccessible to the previous sniffer dogs, but once the vehicle had been opened up properly, a strong smell could be noticed, which immedi‐ ately led to the drugs being uncovered.

As a result, the bust saw the two Brits arrested on charges of suspected drug trafficking, and they were placed at the disposal of Santander’s Court No2, where they went in front of a judge for sentencing, and were subsequently sent to prison, with an investigation reportedly still continu‐ ing.

Spain chosen for studios WANDA-HALCYON Television has an‐ nounced a deal with regional movie studios for their exclusive use in Malaga and Valencia, whilst also revealing plans to open a further studio in Alme‐ ria.

Wanda‐Halcyon Television will be lo‐ cated for 12 months at the Figurarte Studio in Molina, Malaga and Pasarela Studios in Valencia. Susan Handler, Managing Director of Wanda‐Halcyon Television said the company Wanda was excited to start filming various pro‐ ductions in September such as ‘Marked‐The Unforgiven,’ ‘Smoking Gun ‐ A Murder Mystery’ at the stu‐ dios. Ms Handler also said that the company would be opening a produc‐ tion office in Malaga and expects to rent a studio in Almeria to service an existing production. Wanda Halcyon has been actively hiring some of the top entertainment executives in Spain to round out the management team and has hired more than 100 employ‐ ees over the past two months. The company was originally founded by Pat Andrew, Sutish Sharma, Scottie Frank and Prometheus Venture Capital.

A 51-YEAR-OLD woman has been investigated by the Guardia Civil in Oviedo for faking her own kidnapping in the town of Piloña, in As‐ turias.

The woman had allegedly been kidnapped on June 20, and was reported missing by her daughter who rang the

Guardia Civil to say that her mother had been tied up in‐ side a cab lorry by her ex‐ partner.

Officers rushed to the home of the ex‐partner but were able to verify that the woman was not in the cab of his lorry and that he had not kidnapped her. The offi‐

15 dogs abandoned every hour ACCORDING to data collected by the RSCE and based on figures from the Affinity Foundation, 15 unidentified dogs are abandoned in Spain every hour. The study highlights that this is 162,000 dogs that are “left to fend for them‐ selves” each year of which 120,000 do not have a mi‐ crochip. The RSCE has said that this means the person who owns the dog cannot be located and will not have to face fines for abandonment. It also means that the number of animals that are up for adoption increases and so does ex‐ penses for shelters, refuges and collection services.

It is estimated that it costs over €1 million each year just to microchip these abandoned dogs.

The officers noted that the cable ties were doing nothing.

Officers investigated the case thoroughly and discov‐ ered that the events that the woman explained had not actually happened and that she had planned to im‐ plicate her ex‐partner in her kidnapping. She has now been charged for faking her own kidnapping.

Start-up success THE Minerva Programme, an accelerator promoted by the Ministry of Economic Trans‐ formation, Industry, Knowl‐ edge and Universities togeth‐ er with Vodafone, has promoted a total of 183 start‐ups since its creation al‐ most a decade ago.

These initiatives have al‐ ready invoiced almost €11 million in 2020, 41.6 per cent more than in 2019.

The 80 per cent of compa‐ nies accelerated by Minerva comes to market their prod‐ ucts and services at the end of the programme. Some 40.3 per cent of start‐ups that reach the commercialisation phase have been able to sell their innovative solutions outside of Spain.

Almost half of these start‐ ups have sold digital services or products oriented to com‐ panies and 46.5 per cent have developed business models based on the end consumer.

Solar energy ENLIGHT Renewable Energy has signed an agreement to ac‐ quire a portfolio of photovoltaic solar energy projects, in several stages, that are currently under development in Spain, with potential aggregate capacity of approximately 490 MWdc. The portfolio is made up of 10 projects in Andalucia and Valencia which have some of the best radiation in Spain, and supplements the location of the projects the company is building and developing in Spain, currently in the Castilla La Mancha region.

The projects are held through special purpose companies, which at this stage hold most of the rights to the land for construction of the projects and the approvals to connect to the electricity grid.

“This is another expansion of our portfolio of projects in Spain, which already includes the largest wind farm in Spain which is in advanced stages of construction, as well as an‐ other 800MWdc in development.

“The new portfolio, which already secured grid connec‐ tion rights to the national electricity grid, will add significant solar power in high‐radiation areas and will diversify our production sources in the Iberian region,” said Zafir Yoeli, Enlight’s senior vice‐president for business development.

Ryanair leaves Southend RYANAIR has announced that the London Southend Air‐ port will no longer be home to one of its bases from Novem‐ ber 1, this year due to the on‐ going coronavirus pandemic.

Ryanair have been based at the airport located in Essex af‐ ter they signed a five‐year agreement and they have been there since 2018.

The global travel industry has been hit by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic but tourism is returning. Ryanair is not the only travel operator to have been hit by the pandem‐ ic which saw non‐essential air travel halted in the UK for months.

The London based airport is run by Esken Ltd. “Esken, the aviation and energy infrastruc‐ ture group, has today been in‐

formed that Ryanair has stat‐ ed its intention to close its base at London Southend Air‐ port with effect from the start of the winter season this year,” said the company.

“As a result, Ryanair will cease operations based from London Southend Airport from November 1.

“Esken is currently in the process of reviewing the im‐ pact of such decision on its forecasts. However, the finan‐ cial impact of Ryanair’s base closure will be mitigated by a reduction in costs directly as‐ sociated with serving Ryanair’s base and the low level of pas‐ sengers expected during the winter season.

“Esken will provide a fur‐ ther update as soon as it is able.”

In our recent online survey, 28.5 per cent of participants claimed to be dog people and 28.5 per cent said they were cat people, while the remaining 43 per cent said they couldn’t choose between the two.

The number of pets has been on the rise in the past few years, and according to the Pet Food Industry N ational A ssocia-

tion ( A N FA A C ) there are more than 28 million pets in Spain.

In fact, in Madrid alone there are more dogs and cats than there are children aged under 10, and in the rest of Spain, there are now more homes with animals than with babies.

Statistics show that dogs, then cats are the clear favourites, followed by fish and birds, small mammals and reptiles.

The expense of having a

pet can amount to as much as €1,200 per year, regardless of whether they are not pedigree breeds like 35 per cent of the dogs and 50 per cent of cats owned in Spain.

Owners also claim to spend at least three hours per day on their pets, taking them for walks, to the beach, playing, doing sports or going to social events.

T hirty-four per cent of owners find pet-friendly accommodation for their vacation, 10 per cent go to pet friendly hotels, while 27 per cent leave them with family and friends and 5 per cent at kennels.

They frequently buy them toys, snacks, clothes and even take them to spas.

Most claim to buy “quality” pet food over supermarket brands, despite the higher cost.

WHEN people head off on holiday they normally intend to get to the airport early, but in one epic fail a woman arrived at the airport at 6 am to discover that she was a shocking one year early for her flight home after her holiday. The woman had been enjoying a holiday in Croatia and was ready to head back to the UK. She made sure to arrive early at the airport to ensure that nothing could go wrong but she soon found she had made a ‘slight’ error with her flight booking.

Model Alexia Portmann took to TikTok to share her epic airport fail. She claims she ended up stuck in Croatia as she tried to head home to London. The young model showed a video of herself at the airport on TikTok, and it has racked up a shocking number of views.

Habitable planet A TEAM of Spanish scientists and astronomers have used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile to shed new light on planets around a nearby star, L 9859, that resemble those in the inner Solar System.

Amongst the findings are a planet with half the mass of Venus , an ocean world, and a possible planet in the habitable zone. “The planet in the habitable zone may have an atmosphere that could protect and support life,” said Maria Rosa Zapatero Osorio, an astronomer at the Centre for Astrobiology in Madrid.

Vaccine for all SPAIN is donating 7.5 million Covid‐19 vaccines to coun‐ tries in South America and the Caribbean.

After an agreement reached between AstraZeneca, COVAX and Spain, the first donations began last week with 101,760 going to Lima, Peru. Nicaragua received 97,920 doses. Paraguay will get 253,440 doses and Guatemala will get 201,600. These deliveries will be fol‐ lowed by another delivery to Ecuador.

“As the process progresses, it will continue with other shipments to the region which will reinforce the aid provided by Spain in recent months in the form of tech‐ nical cooperation and shipments of medicines and other supplies needed to fight Covid‐19,” the government said.

COVAX coordinates international resources to enable low‐to‐middle‐income countries equitable access to Covid‐19 tests, therapies, and vaccines. By 15 July 2020, 165 countries, including Spain, had joined COVAX.

New law to ensure equal access SPAIN has launched a new law to ensure that disabled people have equal access to public spaces.

The Order aims to ensure, “The real effectiveness of universal accessibility and the right to equal opportunities and treatment for all people in public spaces that they enjoy as citizens.

“To do this, it introduces rules to make them as understandable, usable and practicable as

possible, in conditions of safety and comfort and in the most independent and natural way possible,” the government said.

“The entry into force of the Order will undoubtedly have a positive impact on urban quality, good design and the recovery of public spaces for all people and especially for those who suffer some type of disability, be it permanent or temporary,” the government added.

Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2021 ON August 6, the Government in Gibraltar published a Bill for an Act to make provisions for the regulation of the production, im‐ port, export, marketing and supply of cannabis for medicinal pur‐ poses.

The publication of this Bill follows the announcement by the Minister for Public Health in this year’s Budget debate.

The Government is keen to support the efforts of the private sector by establishing the appropriate legal and regulatory archi‐ tecture in order to create a robustly regulated medicinal cannabis industry. It has spared no effort in ensuring that the proposed Bill creates the potential for a new industry that is regulated fully in compliance with the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961, as amended from time to time.

It is the strict policy of the Government that only the most rep‐ utable businesses will be licensed under the proposed new regime and licensed businesses will therefore need to conduct their operations fully in compliance with the statutory licensing framework.

AUGUST in Spain means the hottest and busiest time of the year, but from a meteorological point of view, it is the month during which the most anticipated annual natural phenomena occurs - the Perseids shower, a rain of shooting stars, popularly known as the ‘Tears of San Lorenzo’, for its proximity to the holiday of the Spanish martyr of the same name.

This shower actually began on July 17, but the peak of the showers is expected to be tonight, Thursday August 12, between the hours of 9pm and midnight.

In order to observe the Perseids clearly, and with the bare eye, you are advised to find an observation point that provides a dark sky, with few obstacles to impair your view, such as buildings, mountains, or trees, with the National Geographic Institute recommending not to use any optical instruments such as telescopes, or binoculars, as they limit your maximum field of vision. The tears of San Lorenzo can still be seen until August 24, in some capacity.

Snickers ditch advert

Mars Wrigley admitted that they were wrong.

SNICKERS have decided to ditch their ice cream advert in Spain following a homophobia outcry.

The Snickers advert has been shown both in Spain and online, and was released only a few short weeks after 24‐year‐old Samuel Luiz was killed in an at‐ tack which was considered ho‐ mophobic.

The ad showed Aless Gibaja, a Spanish influencer eating a Snick‐ ers before changing into a man with a beard. The advert slogan read: “You’re not yourself when you’re hungry.”

The State Federation of Les‐ bians, Gays and Bisexuals took to Twitter to condemn the advert

and said: “It is shameful and re‐ grettable that at this point there are companies that contin‐ ue to perpetuate stereotypes and promote homophobia.” Snickers quickly removed the advert and apologised. “In this specific cam‐ paign, the aim was to convey in a friendly and casual way that hunger can change your charac‐ ter,” said Snickers.

“At no time has it been intend‐ ed to stigmatise or offend any per‐ son or group.”

Mars Wrigley, the parent firm for Snickers have also spoken out and admitted that they made a mistake, but have said they will

“do better in the future”. “We would like to whole heartedly apologise for any harm caused by a recent advert for Snickers Ice Cream in Spain,” said Mars Wrigley.

“We recognise that we got it wrong and have removed the on‐ line content immediately.

“We take equal rights seriously, we want a world where every‐ body is free to be themselves and we believe that we have a respon‐ sibility to play our part in creating that world.

“We will take the opportunity to learn from this mistake and do better in the future.”

Terrorist arrested in Mallorca THE Guardia Civil detained an Algerian man on July 31 in the town of Llucmajor, Mallorca, for terrorism offences.

Their investigation revealed that he led a criminal organisation involved in human trafficking with connections to “facilitating groups” based in North Africa.

Taking advantage of this infrastructure, the suspect facilitated the transfer of combatants from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia to areas controlled

by jihadist factions in Libya, which he in turn financed with funds from his criminal activity.

The operation to detain the suspect was carried out in close cooperation with Interpol and the Algerian authorities. The suspect had multiple passports and travelled frequently, the Guardia Civil said.

The Guardia Civil suspects that the criminal organization he was behind was bringing terrorist fighters from Algeria to Spain.

Separately, Interpol revealed that an organized crime group based in Spain which smuggled migrants by sea from Algeria to the Spanish coast was also dismantled by the authorities in early July.

Law enforcement officials from 47 countries participated in Operation Liberterra and carried out 500,000 inspections at checkpoints and airports as well as at hotspots identified through intelligence and investigations around the world.

Aviation market rebounds

AS of the start of August, Spain is the biggest aviation market in Europe ranked by scheduled seat capacity.

It has the number one international market and the number three domestic market, behind Russia and Turkey, making it the biggest domestic market in western Europe.

Before the pandemic Spain was number three in Europe, behind the UK and Germany.

Spain is at 70 per cent of 2019 capacity for August, more than any other leading western European nation and ahead of the Europe-

wide rate of 65 per cent.

The recovery in passenger traffic is lagging behind capacity for Europe as a whole, but the gap may be closing in Spain.

The top three airlines in Spain - Ryanair, Vueling and Iberia - have retained their precrisis rankings and increased their combined seat share from 42.5 per cent to 50.6 per cent.

Ryanair has a 22.1 per cent share versus 16.7 per cent for Vueling and 11.8 per cent for Iberia, but Iberia as a group has 30.3 per cent. IAG's acquisition of Air Europa would take this to 35 per cent.

Prison without bail A 77-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by the National Police after opening fire on a man who was trying to enter his house in the dark.

The detainee allegedly used his hunting shotgun to kill a 35-year-old man at his house in Ciudad Real.

The elderly man has been provisionally charged as the alleged perpetrator of the death. The court ordered that the elderly man be remanded into custody without bail.

The alleged homicide is still being investigated but National Police sources have explained that the el-

derly man heard noises in the early hours of the morning. When he went to investigate the source of the noises, he saw a person next to his house trying to force entry in the dark. He used his hunting shotgun to fire a series of shots before calling the National Police.

As reported, officers from the “National Police and the Local Police of Ciudad Real went to the house, as well as a mobile ICU, whose crew could only certify the death of the man who had been shot”, according to emergency services 112.

Sardinia has also been hard‐hit and only recently a state of emergency had to be declared after fires broke out on the western coast.

Other countries stepped in to help as best they could, and air support was sent in from France and Greece. Sadly though over 20,000 hectares of land were destroyed.

European funds EARMARKING funds from its Development budget, the European Commission has announced that it will grant more than €1 billion to the autonomous communities of Madrid, Aragon, the Balearic Islands and Extremadura to help strengthen their health facilities which have been put under strain by the pandemic.

Renfe investing SPAIN’S national train operator Renfe has announced that it will spend €35 million to update 44 of its existing trains.

Built by Spanish manufacturer Talgo between 2010 and 2012 the trains still have plenty of life left in them but need to be upgraded to be suitable to provide service on new high-speed lines.

In addition, they will be completely refurbished internally replacing seats, floors and toilets and introducing new passenger information screens as well as better access to WiFi for use while travelling.

This upgraded rolling stock will be introduced over the next three years with some trains ready by the end of 2021.

An eco-friendly digital euro THE concept of digital cur‐ rency has been around for several years and the majori‐ ty of Central Banks including the European Central Bank (ECB) favour an official cryp‐ tocurrency.

The ECB has been review‐ ing the matter for more than nine months and has taken the next step by launching a formal investigation phase of a digital euro project.

“Our work aims to ensure that in the digital age citizens and firms continue to have

access to the safest form of money, central bank mon‐ ey” commented ECB Presi‐ dent Christine Lagarde. The investigation phase will last 24 months and aim to ad‐ dress key issues regarding design and distribution.

A digital euro must be able to meet the needs of Europeans while at the same time helping to prevent illicit activities and avoiding any undesirable impact on finan‐ cial stability and monetary policy.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Politicians, bankers and law enforcement agencies see significant ongoing dan‐ gers with uncontrolled cryp‐ tocurrencies such as Bitcoin, which recently broke the $40,000 (€33,876) barrier as it is an almost untraceable ‘dark’ currency.

In addition to its easy use by criminals, it has seen nu‐ merous people investing in the currency and then not declaring profits when the value goes up, so significant tax income may be lost.

Both the Eurosystem TAR‐ GET Instant Payment Settle‐ ment (TIPS) and alternatives like blockchain could process more than 40,000 transac‐ tions per second.

A digital euro core infras‐ tructure would be environ‐ mentally friendly: for the ar‐ chitectures that were tested, the power used to run tens of thousands of transactions per second is negligible com‐ pared with the energy con‐ sumption of crypto‐assets such as Bitcoin.

You will need the original (or officially stamped) death certificate and proof of payment of the fee for issuing the certificate.

The certificate will show the notary who authorised the will so that a copy can be obtained. If several were made, only the most recent one is valid.

If there is no will, the legal heirs must file an Inheritance Decla‐ ration which will then be authorised by a notary in order to name the legal heirs.

Australian investment THE proposed purchase of just under 23 per cent of the stock in power and gas company Natur‐ gy Energy Group SA has been welcomed by the Spanish Gov‐ ernment. It sees the purchase by Australian IFM Global Infrastruc‐ ture Fund as a sign of interna‐ tional investor confidence in Spain and its economy going for‐ ward. There are conditions as the Spanish Government wants to ensure that staff and invest‐ ment in Spain are maintained and that the company should re‐ main listed on the Spanish Stock Exchange with the clear commit‐ ment to concentrate on renew‐ able energy.

The offer price is now €22.07 per share and the deal can only proceed if approved by Spain’s market regulator CNMV. in particular and this appears to be a potentially ideal solution provided that a source of electric‐ ity is available.

The Government of Namibia in Southern Africa has ordered 1,500 of the units, some which can pro‐ duce several thousand litres of water each day in order to cope with ongoing drought and the desert‐like conditions.

Tory Party Advisory Board funding under the microscope.

ALTHOUGH there have been well‐documented allegations of corruption in Spanish politics, funding for Spain’s political par‐ ties mainly comes from the pub‐ lic purse.

This was decided in the early days of the new democratic regime in the country and was intended to assist in subsidising, without favour, electoral cam‐ paigns and general running of different political parties.

At that time, ‘top ups’ from private sources were allowed but then were banned unless the donations were made anonymously and this practice was also stopped in 2007.

Almost encouraging elections, it may be surprising to learn that following a general election, each party receives a payment based on the overall number of votes it receives.

In the UK however the situa‐ tion is quite different where po‐

litical parties are funded by membership fees, private, union or corporate donations and to a lesser extent, state funding which is reserved for administra‐ tion costs.

The larger parties in particular are always looking for new methods of funding and it now transpires that for the ‘bargain’ price of £250,000 (€275,000) you can become a member of the relatively unsung Conservative Party Advisory Board.

The Labour Party believes this to be nothing more than a secre‐ tive way of getting to meet Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak with the aim of influencing policy, es‐ pecially as new tax laws are around the corner.

The Conservative Party denies this and just shrugs it off as an‐ other way of raising funds simi‐ lar to the Labour Party which runs its own Chair Circle Mem‐ bership group whose members

It’s not rocket science

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IT was with great sadness, and not a little anger that I heard reports of the ever increasing acts of anti‐Semitism in the UK. This greatly persecuted, cultured race of people came to UK shores both during and in the aftermath of the Second World War after the British government and its people offered them both refuge and protection from the tyranny and horrors of Nazi Germany. These beleaguered Jewish immigrants quickly integrated with the indigenous population and proceeded to bring all their expertise, hard work and industrious acumen to bear.

They opened businesses, entered into many professions, including medicine and banking. Many became successful and were ultimately responsible for creating employment for thousands of the resident population. Despite retaining all the trappings of their own faith and developing individual localities for their people, they never in any way attempted to interfere or change the culture of their predominately Christian hosts and indeed the areas they did proudly inhabit became pleasantly middle class, peaceful and trouble free.

ANTI-SEMITISM: Many acts have been recorded.

In other words they were an asset and a shining example of what true diversity and integration is all about. All this of course took place long before many of the immigrants from the Middle East opted to bring their dislike of the Jewish race with them, when they too were offered the sanctuary and benefits of the United Kingdom.

There have now been over 1,300 acts of anti‐Semitism recorded in the first six months of 2021. These have ranged from a convoy of cars filled with Islamists waving Palestinian flags, driving around predominately Jewish areas screaming anti sematic slogans, to a Rabbi seriously injured after being struck over the head

with a brick. This is betraying all the promises and assurances of a safe and peaceful refuge the British people and government offered to these genuine refugees in those dark days of yore.

Many Jewish people are now frightened to go out after dark. Some are wondering if Britain is a safe place any

more and others are actually leaving the country. This is a terrible state of affairs. To expect intelligence insulting Home Secretary Patel, who says all the right words and does absolutely zilch, to London’s Mayor Khan, who, in a recently emerged photo, was shown protesting against the imprisonment of a Jihadist in 2004, to actually make any great effort to resolve this utterly unacceptable state of affairs is, I’m afraid, akin to believing in the tooth fairy.

The lefties of the Labour government and a number of Universities have also been guilty of a whole gambit of anti‐ sematic attitudes and actions. Do you know the most disturbing fact to emerge from all of this? While Jihadists consider the Jewish people their arch enemies, the religion the extremists dislike with an equal passion is Christianity. Untold numbers of fighting fit young men who support these extreme views and beliefs are arriving on British shores every week.

Doesn’t anyone recognise the dangers emerging from this unimpeded state of affairs ‐ a situation that Patel appears unable to control? Not rocket science is it!

So, it won’t be long now before ‘Snow White and the Seven Persons of Short Stature’ will be X‐rated ‐ frightening journey through the forest, the creepy Magic Mirror, the nasty old Wicked Queen/Witch, the vul‐ tures ‐ and then of course there is the treat‐ ment of Little People...

Meanwhile, on Planet Normal: many young teenage boys spend much of their free time

playing violent 18‐rated video games at home. When will this particular is‐ sue be addressed?

Basically, none of this applies to the real world in the era of the Internet and Netflix.

Your average 12‐year‐old will have seen more than the average pensioner in terms of R‐rat‐ ed content. The censors seem to be living in a parallel universe. Another public institution

run by woke liberals? Wokeness/political correctness is slowly killing the arts.

So, presumably ‘Star Wars’ will be remov‐ ing all references to the Empire then? Maybe they should call it ‘The EUnion’ instead?

In conclusion, then, mindless stupidity at best, insane woke‐ ness at worst. To reclassify harm‐ less films, to bow to the ap‐ peasement halfwits, over issues that most people wouldn't even notice, except of course those who are offended by life. What is especially surprising is that people can be offended by anything that they can twist into some anti‐diversity message or de‐ piction and yet turn a blind eye to the appallingly bad language that we have to endure on TV and in films.

The world’s gone bonkers. Please stop it turning so that I can get off now!

The quicker we build a base on Mars (hurry up, Elon Musk!) for all these woke/snowflake bores the better...

COCONUT oil is one of the few foods that can be classed as ‘su‐ perfood’ offering a wealth of health benefits.

Its unique combination of fatty acids can have positive effects, in‐ cluding fat loss and better brain function to name just a couple.

Bite back at the mosquito bite MOSQUITO bites are synony‐ mous with the warmer weather, and while most bites are harm‐ less, some can cause complica‐ tions.

Mosquitoes can carry diseases, although the likelihood of being infected depends largely on where you live.

Another rare problem caused by a mosquito bite is a negative reaction to the bite itself.

If you are bitten and develop hives, difficulty breathing, or a swollen throat, con‐ tact a doctor immedi‐ ately.

You may not notice when a mosquito bites you, but the bump the bite leaves be‐ hind comes with a persistent itch that can linger for days.

Creams and ointments can help, but you can also beat the itch with things that are probably already lying around your house.

Oatmeal is one remedy. It can relieve itching and swelling be‐ cause it contains special com‐ pounds that have anti‐irritant qualities.

Make a paste by mixing equal amounts of oatmeal and water in a bowl until you have a Polyfilla‐ like substance. Spoon some paste onto a washcloth and hold it,

Make a baking soda paste, and you can use it in a similar manner to oatmeal paste. Mix one table‐ spoon of baking soda with just enough water to create a paste.

Apply it to the bug bite, and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing it away.

Alternatively, the juice of an onion can be applied, lemon balm essential oil or witch hazel.

Late night munching risks EATING before bed and midnight snacking dis‐ rupts the body’s internal clock and could increase the risk of cancer, according to a new study.

Spanish scientists have found that people who regularly ate their evening meal after 9pm, or less than two hours before going to sleep, had a 25 per cent raised risk of breast and prostate can‐ cers. The team, from the Institute for Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), said it could be a result of late dinners that force the body’s metabolism to speed up, at a time when it should be winding down for sleep.

It follows several major studies looking at the effects of shift work among nurses and manual workers, with these occupations apparently at higher risk of prostate and breast cancers.

These types of cancers are closely linked to hor‐ monal cues and are often treated with testos‐ terone or oestrogen‐blocking therapies. Hor‐ mones are chemical messengers that can make us sleepy, hungry and stressed and are therefore tightly linked to the body’s rhythms ‐ the internal

clock set by the day‐night cycle. Researchers sur‐ veyed 1,800 Spanish breast or prostate cancer patients, and more than 2,000 people unaffected by the disease, about their eating and sleeping patterns, and any steps they take to keep healthy. It found cancer patients were more likely to be late night snackers, even after taking into account other health habits and dietary or sleep patterns. Currently international guidelines on the prevention of cancer don’t mention the po‐ tential impact of meal times on cancer, though the World Health Organisation does list shift working. Studies on the effects of meal disruption on animals have shown ‘profound effects on health’ and the Barcelona group says if more studies replicate their findings there could be a cause for guidelines to be updated. Dr Dora Ro‐ maguera, who led the research, said further re‐ search in humans is needed in order to under‐ stand the reasons behind these findings, but everything seems to indicate that the timing of sleep affects our capacity to metabolise food.

by Mark Slack IT seems there is nothing but extremes in the colour palettes offered by car makers. Black, silver and grey at one end of the spectrum and luminescent greens, oranges and yel‐ lows at the other. For any‐ thing colourfully normal you can add a sometimes not insufficient amount o f m o n e y t o y o u r o p‐ tions bill.

My VW T‐Roc came in Turmeric Yellow, which while mobilising some people to a less than flattering verbal outage of comment raised others t o Ev e r e s t ‐ l i k e l e v e l s o f praise. As I said, extremes.

The T‐Roc’s spicy metallic paintwork weighs in at €744 (£635) on the optional extras list.

I suspect that few people would dispute how well the T‐Roc drives, it has all the refined smoothness one has come to expect from anything bearing the VW badge. The range starts at €28,338 (£24,185) for the

Auto dim‐ ming rear view mirror, height adjustable front seats, auto wipers and lights, powered and heated door mirrors, climate, heat‐ ed seats, adaptive cruise, Bluetooth and navigation all come as standard. That’s a pretty impressive list!

There’s even a cabriolet version and a high performance 2.0‐litre, turbocharged petrol R mod‐ el with four‐wheel‐drive and 300 hp.

The test model was the aforementioned Active specification but powered by a larger four‐cylinder 1.5‐litre turbocharged petrol unit

(€32,036/£27,340).

Mated to a seven‐speed automatic transmission the 150 hp engine provides a top speed of 204 kmh and the benchmark 100 kmh is passed in a worthy 8.6 sec‐ onds. In this boosted form the economy is still pretty decent.

There’s plenty of space for the front seat occu‐ pants, and those in the rear will not feel cheated on legroom either. However, I

found it disappointing that there is so much hard inte‐ rior plastic ie cheap that detracts from the usual perception of VW quality.

This even extends to the cloth panels on the front doors being replaced by all plastic on the rear doors.

On the road the T‐Roc handles well, even by crossover standards it can be hustled along twisting cross country roads quite

happily. It feels a quality drive throughout with re‐ finement and comfort.

Smart and not overly large it’s a brilliant way of gain‐ ing that higher driving posi‐ tion without the drawbacks of a large SUV. Although subjective the T‐Roc is one of the best looking crossovers with an understated style that makes it both classy and classless.

Rising electricity prices THERE is a continued upward trend in elec‐ tricity prices in Spain, with levels almost nev‐ er seen before and reaching the historic lev‐ els ‐ exceeding on several occasions in July those that were registered on January 8 in the middle of storm Filomena. The recent in‐ creases are being blamed on international gas prices and CO² emission rights, which have been driving the upward trend in recent months, together with the lower contribu‐ tion of renewables into the mix.

At the same time as these price increases are taking place, the government has been of‐ fering its subsidy scheme, by way of the Moves III plan, which has reportedly caused a significant increase in sales of electric and plug‐in cars, thanks to the assistance it offers in purchasing these types of vehicle.

But, according to the National Association of Property Administrators, the current Span‐ ish energy system is not fully prepared enough to handle the Government's pledge to promote and implement the use of electric vehicles, without an increase in the price of energy.

With continually rising electricity prices, the Association points out that, "the State does not have any control capacity to protect the consumer. So, if with the current system, the Government cannot guarantee access to en‐ ergy at reasonable prices, how can policies of

more electricity consumption be promoted without adopting supply and price protection measures for the consumer?".

They continued, "We understand that, if the Government continues to boost electricity consumption without adopting urgent mea‐ sures to protect prices, then the price of elec‐ tricity is and will be, even more prohibitive, and unfeasible for a domestic economy, which causes, and will cause, even more eco‐ nomic energy poverty to families, giving limit‐ ed access to energy only to the wealthiest classes, while suffocating the most disadvan‐ taged social classes in our country".

The Association has also stated that if the State does not have the capacity to guarantee access to energy at reasonable prices, then it should not promote policies of more electrici‐ ty consumption until it can guarantee that all consumers have access to electricity at afford‐ able prices.

"We are all aware that we must fight against the emission of gases and pollution, with policies that protect our environment, as well as the possibilities that our country has for the production of clean and renewable en‐ ergies, but at the moment, Spain is not pre‐ pared to drastically increase the consumption of electrical energy without this implying an increase in the price for the population", they concluded, as reported in the national press.

Filling your vehicle costs almost 22 per cent more than this time last year FILLING your vehicle with fu‐ el costs around 22 per cent more than it did at this time last year according to new data According to the latest da‐ ta from the Oil Bulletin of the European Union, the cost of fuel in Spain is on the increase and reaching new highs in the first week of Au‐ gust, resulting in filling your vehicle's tank going up by 21.8 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2020.

A litre of petrol has gone up to an average of €1.416, the highest since September 2014, meaning filling a tank has gone up by 21.8 per cent since last August, while diesel averages out at €1.296 per litre, its highest price since November 2018, an increase since last August of 19.7 per cent.

Specifically, it means that filling your vehicle ‐ with an average‐sized 55‐litre fuel tank ‐ with petrol, will now

cost around €77.80, which is €14 more than last Au‐ gust, while in the case of diesel, it works out at €69.50, an increase of around €11.5.

Before last Easter, both types of fuel had already reached their pre‐Covid lev‐ els, and already, just this year so far, petrol has risen by 18 per cent a litre, and diesel by 17 per cent a litre, increase which have gone hand in hand with the re‐ covery in the price of a bar‐ rel of oil, for which ‐ using a reference to the Old Conti‐ nent ‐ a barrel of Brent crude oil stood at $70.6 on Thursday, August 5, while Texas was $68.6 a barrel, falls of more than two dol‐ lars compared to this week a year ago.

Sources from the Spanish Association of Petroleum Products Operators (AOP) indicated that the reason for the rise in fuel prices at the pump is, “the rise in the

price of crude oil, and the international prices of petrol and diesel, due to the increase in the demand for crude oil due to the advance of vaccination.”

The Tour Of Spain cycling event begins on August 14 IN a bid to further promote the brand ‘Andalucia European Sports Region’, in a press confer‐ ence on Friday, August 6, the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Junta de Andalucia, repre‐ sented by the Secretary‐General for Sport, Jose Maria Arrabal, through the Public Company for the Management of Tourism and Sports of Andalucia, pre‐ sented its sponsorship of this year’s La Vuelta a España, cy‐ cling competition, an event that is followed in 190 countries by an estimated 158 million people.

Also in attendance was, Javier Guillen, the General Director of Unipublic, the organising body of the Tour of Spain, along with Spain’s Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games, Jose Manuel Moreno Periñan.

The Vuelta is the third in the

trilogy of Europe’s ‘Grand Tours’ cycling events, following the Giro d’Italia, and the Tour de France, and this year will run from August 14 to September 5, with five of its stages ‐ almost 800km, one‐third of the total event ‐ being held ex‐ clusively in Andalucia, and around 1,130 accredited journal‐ ists, of 34 nationalities, from 340 different media outlets, are ex‐ pected to attend.

Being such a huge event, ac‐ cording to 2018 data, the Vuelta saw around 14,300 hours of tele‐ vision time, in 190 countries, hav‐ ing a cumulative viewing audi‐ ence of around 158 million people, with the top countries for viewing being Spain, Colombia, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, while internet videos of La Vuelta have notched up an amazing 25 million views, with a community of more than one million followers on social net‐ works.

Thanks to this sponsorship agreement, the brand of Andalu‐ cia European Sports Region will be present on the official website of La Vuelta, in different formats, as well as on its social networks, and at test points such as the kilo‐ metre arc, hurdles, the podium, and in the national signal live, along with the vehicle ‘Vive An‐ dalucia’.

Football fans’ strict guidelines WHILE Spain is still trying to battle the fifth wave of the coronavirus, this August will hopefully see the return of fans to mass sporting events.

The First and Second Division football season starts at the middle of this month and the matches will once again witness the sound of fans in the stadiums.

According to the agreement signed by the autonomous communities and the Ministry of Health in the Interterri‐ torial Health Council, a series of requirements and limita‐ tions must be observed by spectators if they are to be al‐ lowed to return to the stadiums and sports halls.

These are the most important points of the agree‐ ment: Stadiums and sports halls will have a maximum of 40 per cent of the capacity in outdoor spaces, (football or athletics stadiums).

Preference of entry will be given to club members and away team fans.

Spectators will not be able to purchase, or enter with, food into stadiums and pavilions ‐ they will only be al‐ lowed to drink water to quell the heat. There can be no smoking or use of electronic cigarettes or similar devices.

The approved measures affect all the communities throughout the country and are mandatory, as highlight‐ ed by the minister. All the communities voted in favour of the agreement, with the exception of the Basque Country, which agreed with the measures but abstained over a question of powers.
