Time to sow GROWERS began sowing the Vega Baja’s main crop of artichokes, hoping that this year they will be able to plant a 2,000-hectare area as they did before the disastrous September 2019 storms.

More jobs THE Vega Baja’s unemployment figures fell by 441 in July, according to the region’s official employment service, LABORA. Torrevieja had the biggest drop with 487 fewer jobless although in some towns, like Callosa, unemployment rose.

New role ORIHUELA’S bullring has been restored while respecting its historic and architectural features. Once it meets current regulations and technical requirements it will then be licensed for use as a multipurpose installation.

POSIDONIA CHECK: IEL divers happy with the Orihuela Costa’s underwater meadows. ORIHUELA COSTA’S underwater meadows of Posidonia Oceanica (Neptune Grass), which are vital to the marine environment, are in optimum condition. The Institute of Coastal Ecolo‐ gy (IEL) has been examining the state of Orihuela’s meadows as part of the POSIMED pro‐

gramme which has been sup‐ ported and financed by the Diputacion provincial council for several years. With 73 Posidonia sampling sites along the Alicante coast, POSIMED’s network is now the most extensive in Spain, the Diputacion announced last July.

The information that volun‐ teer divers gather at these sites is later compiled in reports that as‐ sess which Posidonia meadows are in a good or a bad condition. The recent IEL inspection cov‐ ered the Punta Prima, La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor, sampling stations, explained Ori‐ huela’s Environment councillor Damaso Aparicio. Control dives were also car‐ ried out off Orihuela Costa’s 11 Blue Flag beaches, he said. “We have verified that the Posidonia is in perfect condition, confirming it as the best on the Costa Blanca,” Aparicio declared.

The pair are now raising funds for the Samaritans in Spain from sales on their website at www.foxandwolfcollection.com.
