Six new cases THE councillor for Health, Javier Rodriguez, reported that the screening carried out on August 9 in Nerja by the Ministry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucia has detected six new positive covid cases. A total of 173 tests were done out of the 825 people summoned, a participation rate of 21 per cent. Rodriguez thanked all the participants who had voluntarily undergone the test, “which has made it possible to locate asymptomatic infected people that otherwise would have been impossible, which helps a lot to stop the spread of the virus in our municipality.” He also congratulated the Local Police and Civil Protection team who at all times ensured the safety of the attendees and the compliance with hygienic-sanitary measures.

Middle East tourists

THE organisation, Costa del Sol Tourism, said it wants to attract Middle Eastern tourists to boost the luxury tourism sector. Margarita del Cid, CEO of Costa del Sol Tourism, said officials will push Malaga in the Middle Eastern markets “and reactivate trust and the flow of visitors among this highly appreciated and important clientele ahead of the summer season.” The body is also working on attracting travellers from the UK and Russia. The news comes after Marbella Council announced it is putting aside €10 million to attract tourism. The council said the funding will be used to improve tourism in Marbella. Marbella Council has now opened the period to locals to put forward their ideas on how the funding can be used. The ‘Tourist Plan for Large Cities’ will be open to the public for their suggestions. Councillor for Tourism, Laura De Arce, said it was “a key element in the municipal strategy for the re‐ activation of the sector, after the crisis generated by the pan‐ demic.” She added that council will accept ideas from “the most rep‐ resentative organisations such as unions, businessmen, con‐ sumers, residents, groups of people with disabilities, LGTBI peo‐ ple, environmentalists and the economy.” The plan will be given €10 million, funded by Marbella Coun‐ cil and the Junta de Andalucia in an effort to improve tourism.

Man rescued AN exhausted swimmer was rescued by National Police officers when he got into trouble only 200 metres from the shore and began to drown on the afternoon of August 6. The 57-year-old Romanian man had been struggling against heavy swell and was unable to get out of the sea on his own. Police officers were dispatched to help the man and when they arrived on the scene they discovered the man was hanging onto a buoy. Sea conditions were difficult which made the return to shore hard work for the officers. Only 50 metres from the shore a further group of National Police officers rushed to help and entered the sea to help bring the man safely ashore.

NO REGRETS: The trio raise money for local charities. CHRIS and Mark Morris, a fa‐ ther and son from Essex, and Ian Perry, from Sheffield in the UK, took the bull by the horns and opened a bar on the Costa del Sol on Decem‐ ber 20, 2020 amidst the ongo‐ ing health pandemic. R&R, located on Calle Huer‐ ta in the popular seaside town of Nerja, was opened when the previous owner de‐ cided to close and move back to their hometown ‐ the trio jumped at the opportunity, after having visited the town for over 16 years and been

residents there for five years. Having taken the plunge in the middle of these crazy times, in return for the local support, the bar also believes in giving back to the communi‐ ty by helping to raise money for local charities. They have most recently raised €250 dur‐ ing the Euro 2020 games that has been donated to Nerja Sol‐ idaria, a charity that raises money for families in need. The money will go towards food banks, children’s sta‐ tionery and toiletries. They are still taking donations for

this worthy cause. Despite the health crisis, lockdown had finished by De‐ cember and only opening hour restrictions were in place (as well as the obligatory mask rule, of course). Mark and Chris said “that they have no regrets and do have a lot of regulars, however, business is picking up lately, we have had many French, Swedish and Irish cus‐ tomers, and we are seeing a rise in customers from the UK, too which is promising, and we look forward to assisting more local charities in the future.”

MALAGA: To be pushed in the Middle Eastern markets.
