Parrot rescue ALICANTE firefighters came to the rescue when a macaw parrot had escaped from its owner and perched on a ledge of a building in Alicante’s Calle Bilbao.

The rather unusual rescue also involved the bird’s owner to make sure that it did not get scared and fly away.

Local Police received a call shortly before 6pm from a private individual, alerting them to a parrot which was on top of the building and in need of urgent rescue, as it was sitting on a ledge.

A police patrol attended the scene of the strange incident and, seeing that the area where the bird was located was difficult to access, they requested the help of firefighters.

Firefighters from SPEIS attempted to rescue the bird using two teams with six firefighters and a vehicle to help them reach the area and perform a quick rescue to ensure that the parrot did not fly away.

Cultural attraction EL CAMPELLO in Alicante is asking for its patron saint festivities to be declared of tourist interest.

The proposal was put forward by the councillor for Tourism Marisa Navarro at the last council plenary session, and it has been unanimously approved by all the political groups.

This means that the request will now be processed before the Generalitat.

€1M for tourism THE Alicante Tourist Board has launched the biggest aid package to the sector in its history, worth €1 million.

Speaking of how the package will help the tourism sector, Mari Carmen Sanchez, the deputy mayor and head of Tourism said that we are presenting: “the largest package of aid to the tourism sector in the history of this city council. It is intended to help associations in the sector to boost their projects, while, in addition, we are also presenting grants to companies so that, in particular, they can submit proposals.”

The aid will be broken down into two distinct lines which according to the council are: “subsidies to associations in the tourism sector that present projects for €690,000 and, as a novelty, €310,000 for other subsidies to companies that present proposals for the 2021 financial year.”

The main aim of the aid is to reactivate Alicante as a tourist destination. It is also hoped that Alicante will be able to improve its image and its competitiveness too as a tourist destination.

The aid will also hopefully promote digitalisation projects, sustainability and measures that should help reduce coronavirus contagions in tourist establishments.

Poison fears at canine beach THE Guardia Civil’s Seprona nature protection unit is investigating complaints that dogs have been poi‐ soned at Campello’s ‘dogs‐allowed’ beach.

At least four owners have complained that their pets were affected after eating what appeared to be deliberately‐poisoned food on the beach located at the mouth of the River Seco.

Seprona officers recently searched the beach, ac‐ companied by a sniffer dog specially‐trained to de‐ tect poison, in a bid to locate more baited food.

Local Police officers now inspect the beach each day while Campello’s Public Safety councillor Rafa Galvañ is examining the legal implications of in‐ stalling CCTV cameras at the beach.

A year in pictures BENIDORM architect and designer Tito Perez Mora recently presented his 20‐metre mural, El Nadador (The Swimmer). Occupying one of the most visited sites in Benidorm at the end of the Levante Beach, the artwork has been executed entirely with Perez Mora’s left hand. Shortly after presenting the mural, he launched his book, 366/2020 accompanied by Benidorm mayor Toni Perez and Culture councillor Ana Pellicer. It explains the artist’s experiences, de‐ picted in the 366 drawings that he created last year.

Curfew fears unfounded JULY was less catas‐ trophic than Valencian Community hoteliers had feared.

Hosbec, the associa‐ tion representing them, revealed as the month came to an end that 70 per cent of ho‐ tels were open with an average 60 per cent occupancy at week‐ ends.

These figures, which would have been con‐ sidered disastrous two years ago, were en‐ couraging in the pre‐ sent circumstances when the Costa Blanca is relying heavily on Spanish tourists.

As yet, the British market still has to take off and in July the ma‐ jority of Britons arriv‐ ing at Alicante airport were almost exclusive‐ ly residents. Mean‐ while, the number of foreign tourists has nevertheless increased by between 15 and 17 per cent in Benidorm and the Costa Blanca, and by 33 per cent in Valencia.

This followed on from early fears of cancellations resulting from the Generalitat’s restrictions and cur‐ fews introduced to halt the spread of coronavirus, Hosbec said.

The curfews im‐ posed on Alicante City, Benidorm, Alfaz, Calpe, Denia, Gata, La Nucia and Villajoyosa, amongst others, ap‐ pear to be having little impact on August bookings, sources said.

On the contrary, the sector now hopes to maintain an average occupancy of around 60 per cent, thanks to the loyalty of the Spanish tourists ‐ espe‐ cially those from Madrid and the Basque region ‐ who return to the Costa Blanca year after year.

Curfews extended THE Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) on Thursday July 29, endorsed the extension of the current night curfew that the Generalitat had re‐ quested to be applied in 162 municipalities of Cat‐ alonia, maintaining the limitation of meetings to a maximum of 10 people to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

With their decision, the contentious chamber of the Catalan high court concluded that the mea‐ sures proposed by the Generalitat are “necessary, suitable and proportionate” in view of the “serious situation” and the “imminent risk of progression of the pandemic” with “serious affectation” of the sanitary system.

The TSJC has thus agreed to the night curfews being extended until August 6, effective from July 16 in Catalan towns of more than 5,000 citizens with a cumulative incidence of 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days, as well as municipalities surrounded by cities with worse epidemiological conditions.

Mistakenly jabbed with serum ALICANTE residents who were mistak‐ enly jabbed with serum, not the Pfizer vaccine, are set to receive a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine, to make sure that they are fully vaccinated.

This means that they will become the first people in Spain to receive a third jab of the Pfizer vaccine. This is something which is being considered for the general population at the mo‐ ment. Spain’s regional Ministry of Health have recalled about 30 people in Alicante who received the second dose of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccina‐ tion in Biar in Alicante. Sadly 12 of them were mistakenly given serum only.

The shocking mistake was spotted at the end of the day when alarm bells rang and health staff realised that a mistake had been made. They discov‐ ered that 12 doses were not diluted correctly. This occurred on the day when people born in 1978 were being

The case has been analysed by pub‐ lic health experts, but it has not been possible to identify exactly who was in‐ jected with serum and who received the real deal. According to ABC, 30 people who received the vaccine on that day will receive a third dose.

This means that some people will be receiving their second dose while oth‐

ers will in fact be receiving a third dose.

The mayor of Biar said : “In this cen‐ tre we also serve Cañada, Campo de Mirra and Benejama. A few weeks ago there was a spike in cases and many PCRs were carried out, as well as main‐ taining a high rate of vaccinations. All of this with a low staff and we are very busy because no reinforcements are arriving.”

A couple’s message of hope ON June 28 Ingeborg Sluiters and Simon de Boer left Schoorl in the Netherlands where they live for most of the year.

Twenty‐nine days and 2,370 kilometres later they arrived at their La Nucia home, having cy‐ cled all that way.

“You must be expert cyclists,” the Euro Weekly News suggested when we spoke to Ingeborg and Si‐ mon last week.

Both laughed at the suggestion. “No!” they exclaimed in unison.

Ingeborg, 52, and Si‐ mon, 60, visit Spain when they can. Yes, even in the summer when the heat is at its fiercest and temper‐ atures at their highest, they insisted.

Cycling is ideal for mov‐ ing from A to B on the Costa Blanca, they re‐ alised, and back in Holland they decided to buy e‐ bikes for their next visit.

From there to making the 2,370‐kilometre trek by bike was, they felt, a logical step. But there was much more to the deci‐ sion than that.

Last December, both were ill with Covid and not long before that, Si‐ mon spent an earlier spell in hospital for surgery on his back. They wanted to tell a positive story and send a message of hope during what has been ‐ and still is ‐ such a dark and difficult time for so many people. With all the restrictions and obstacles to the lives that we took for granted before the pandemic, they wanted to show people that you can recover after an operation and you can return to nor‐ mal after Covid.

Toughened punishments THE Ministry of the Interior which is led by Fernando Grande‐Marlaska is set to propose to the Ministry of Justice that people who at‐ tack police officers and Guardia Civil officers are giv‐ en tougher punishments.

The news comes from the Department of the Interior to the Unified Police Union (SUP) and the Unified Association of Guardia Civil (AUGC) who started to campaign for this a few months ago.

According to reports, the di‐ rector of Cabinet of the minis‐ ter, Susana Crisotmo, believes that it is appropriate for this this proposal to be taken into account for an ‘eventual re‐ form of the Penal Code’.

Crisotmo believes that the strengthening of punishments would have a great impact on the state security forces. “It fa‐ cilitates the development of their general missions, based on complying with and enforc‐ ing the law, protecting the

free exercise of rights and freedoms and guaranteeing public safety,” she said.

Currently attacking an offi‐ cer is included within the pe‐ nal code under article 550.2.

Attacks on officers are already punishable by time in prison which can last up to four years. If a public official is at‐ tacked, then the penalty comes in at six months to three years in prison. Sadly though judges often offer far more lenient sentences.

At the moment though no one knows how much the punishment could be in‐ creased by and when it will happen.

Carlos Morales, the nation‐ al spokesman for the SUP, be‐ lieves that respect for authori‐ ty is being lost.

“Little by little we are losing the principle of authority and the penalties need to be toughened up a little so that this respect is not completely lost,” said Morales.

AstraZeneca record sales ASTRAZENECA’S Covid‐19 vaccine has brought in sales of almost €1 billion in the first half of this year. Sales have tripled in the second quarter compared to the first al‐ though its earnings remain significantly lower than its US rival Pfizer/BioNTech.

Britain’s largest drug maker also re‐ vealed that it had generated €752.62 mil‐ lion from Covid‐19 vaccine sales in the three months to the end of June, following €231.51 million in the first three months of the year.

Ryanair warns of scam RYANAIR is asking its customers to book their flights directly through the website as a result of new cases of scams.

According to the company: “Some Ryanair customers have confirmed that they have been victims of a false ‘discount’ scam by these unauthorised agencies, where the pay‐ ment details that the customer uses to book their flight are subsequently used fraudulent‐ ly on later dates.

“The company warns its customers of this situation and asks that they be careful with

this scam, booking flights through its website Ryanair.com or in the official application of the airline.”

Ryanair said: “To help customers who have mistakenly booked through an unau‐ thorised online travel agency, Ryanair launched its Ryanair Price Checker last April, available on the Ryanair.com website and used by more than 50,000 customers, where users will be able to check if they have been overcharged by verifying the amount they paid to an OTA and what Ryanair received

Downloading Covid passport THE coronavirus vaccination programme is progressing well in Spain and now many people are intent on down‐ loading their Covid passport in Spain.

The Covid passport, or to give it its full name, the Euro‐ pean Digital Covid Certificate, came into force on July 1 this year after an agreement was put in place by the European Union. Residents and citizens within the EU can now down‐ load digital Covid certificates easily. The certificate confirms whether a person has been vaccinated against the coron‐ avirus or if they have received a negative result from a test.

The certificate also shows if they have caught Covid and have recovered from the dis‐ ease. The Covid passport is available in digital format or on paper and comes with a QR code. These certificates are available in the national lan‐ guage and also in English and are free. According to the Eu‐ ropean commission they are also reliable and are valid for all European Union countries.

In Spain most of the au‐ tonomous communities have created a special section on their mobile health apps, where the certificate can be downloaded from. This means

that people can easily down‐ load the Covid passport. The Ministry of Health has also cre‐ ated an electronic procedure whereby people can access their certificates too.

In Andalucia the Salud An‐ dalucia application can be used to request the passport.

EU opens fair trade infringement procedures against Spain THE EU has opened infringe‐ ment procedures against 12 member states, including Spain for failing to adopt EU rules banning unfair trading practices in the agri‐food sector.

The Directive on unfair trad‐ ing practices in the agricultural and food supply chain ensures protection of all European farmers, as well as of small and mid‐range suppliers, against 16 unfair trading practices from larger buyers in the food supply chain. The deadline for adopt‐ ing the Directive into national legislation was May 1, 2021.

The EU Commission sent a letter of formal notice to Spain on July 27. Madrid now has two months to reply.

The 16 unfair trading prac‐ tices to be banned include late payments and last‐minute or‐ der cancellations for perishable food products; unilateral or retroactive changes to con‐ tracts; forcing the supplier to pay for wasted products; and refusing written contracts.

Readers divided over ‘No jab - No job’ policy OUR readers had divided opinions over Netflix and Google introducing a ‘No Jab - No Job’ policy for their workforces.

While some totally supported the scheme so there is less risk to clients and colleagues and would have it extended to not allowing unvaccinated people in crowded areas, there were many others who did not agree and believe people should have the freedom to choose and not be penalised if they decided not to get what they called a ‘trial vaccine’.

Some of the supporters specified “If it’s a policy requirement for future recruits, fair enough. To force existing workers, no,” while others pointed out that “employers cannot keep having a ping and the whole section has to go into isolation, they will not be able a run a business like that.”

Some readers also suggested that companies could face being sued if a worker caught Covid at work from another who was not vaccinated.

While some called it discriminatory, another said “Life’s about making choices and living with the consequences of those choices!

“All positions of employment come with conditions that you as an employee need to comply with.

If you as an employee don’t want to meet those conditions, you cannot really call that discrimination!”

Tourism recovering THE Spanish tourism sector is on the road to recovery with a sharp rise in the number of arrivals compared to last year.

Tourist spending is also returning to pre-pandemic levels. In June last year tourists spent just €130 million but in June 2021 they spent €2.416 billion. So far for 2021, 5.4 million foreign tourists have visited Spain.

The Balearic Islands are the top destination with almost a third of holidaymakers visiting the Mediterranean archipelago. Andalucia ranks as the third most popular destination, according to data compiled the National Statistics Institute.

fast. Defibrillators can also restore the heart’s beating if the heart suddenly stops.

I n the hands of the trained staff on the ambulance and given the incidence of heart problems in our area, particularly given the age profile, we think this is an excellent way to help those in need.

THE Valencian Community is to receive more than €139 million from the central government between 2022 and 2026.

The cash will arrive via Madrid’s S trategy for S ustainable T ourist Destinations that lays the foundations for a new tourism model consistent with the UN’s 2030 sustainable development targets.

The Sustainable Tourist Destinations plan will be carried out by local, provincial and regional administrations, coordinated by the Diputacion provincial councils and the region’s Tourism Board.

It will be based on a green and sustainable transition, energy-efficiency, digital transformation and competitivity, explained S pain’s Tourism minister Reyes Maroto and F rancesc C olomer, her V alencian Community equivalent in the Generalitat’s Consell.

The Sustainable Tourist Destination plan encourages collaboration between the public and private sectors, enabling businesses to benefit from its management and digitalisation initiatives.

Local authorities now have until September 20 to apply for amounts ranging from €1 million to €10 million, depending on the category of each tourist destination.

Meanwhile, the central government has allocated €2.3 million to the Generalitat to advance sustainable tourism under a pilot scheme in Altea and Peñiscola (Castellon).

This follows on from similar grants made last year to Benidorm and Gandia.

NHS app to ping less THE UK government has announced it is changing its NHS app so that there are not as many pings.

The changes will be made to prevent as many people receiving NHS alerts to quarantine after businesses criti‐ cised the UK government when thousands of staff were forced to quarantine.

The programme currently alerts users if they have come into contact with someone with the virus in the past five days, however the government will reportedly change this to two days, decreasing the number of peo‐ ple who receive a ping.

Boris Johnson has vowed the pingdemic will end on August 16.

According to Boris, the change from mandatory self‐ isolation after coming into contact with a positive per‐ son is “nailed on” for double jabbed individuals, and it will not be delayed. He also said he believes that the country is ready to make a “very, very strong” economic recovery.

Earthquake shakes AN earthquake of a 3.2 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Murcia on Sunday August 1, according to the Na‐ tional Geographic Institute.

The epicentre was just 19km from the capital Murcia, in the municipality of Librilla, a small village of around 5,000 inhabitants. The area sits above a fault line and is known for its seismic activity. There were no reports of injuries or property damage.

Guardia Civil drugs haul at sea THE Guardia Civil and Agencia Tributaria, in cooperation with the Portuguese Judicial Police, have dismantled an organised crime network involved in large‐ scale drugs trafficking.

Eight suspects were arrested as they attempted to smuggle 15 tonnes of hashish into Spain. The investigation began at the end of last year after the Spanish investi‐ gators uncovered an organised crime group smuggling hashish from Morocco to Spain using dif‐ ferent types of vessels.

Police quickly focused on one particular vessel, known as the Seefuchs acquired by the criminal group in November 2020. In June of this year, the Seefuchs set sail to Morocco, under close surveil‐ lance from law enforcement.

Once the drugs were loaded onto the vessel, the criminals sailed back towards the Gibraltar Strait. The vessel was stormed by Spanish law enforcement some 100 nautical miles south of the Spanish coast. During the assault, five individuals were arrested and 15 tonnes of hashish seized.

Five house searches were then carried out across Spain, resulting in the arrest of three other mem‐ bers of this same gang, together with the seizure of €60,000 in cash. A luxury yacht which was used for drugs transportation was seized in Lanzarote.

Senegalese citizens receive residence THE two young Senegalese citi‐ zens, Ibrahima and Magatte, who helped Samuel Luiz during the deadly attack on July 3, have been given their resi‐ dence and work cards.

After completing the process of regularising their situation in Spain, as confirmed by sources from the Government Sub‐del‐ egation in A Coruña, it was ex‐ plained that they went to the Immigration Department, where both signed the relevant documentation.

According to the source, the residence cards were collected on July 27 at the offices of the National Police, which has thus concluded the process that started on July 20 after the Sub‐ delegation of the Government in A Coruña sent a favourable report on these two young peo‐ ple to the Secretary of State for Migration.

THE Social security offices have assured the self‐employed sector that an email sent from their official email address is not to be sus‐ pected of being fake.

With the increasing everyday reports involving identity theft, phishing, and fraudulent emails, deliberately claiming to have orig‐ inated from official bodies, the General Treasury of Social Security has issued a warning to the self‐employed sector in Spain, via its Twitter account, that it does in fact communicate with people by email, and that workers should be aware of that when checking their emails.

Posting on Twitter, the entity wrote, “The Treasury is sending an e‐Informative mail to all the self‐employed regarding debts and account charges. The sender is noreply@seg‐social.es. It is not a fraud.”

This warning is designed to clarify to the self‐employed sector that any emails received from the noreply@seg‐social.es are sent via a secure line, and that opening it, or clicking on any links includ‐ ed in the mail, are safe, and bring attention to the fact that they do use the ‘noreply’ as part of their email address, which might cause suspicion or confusion normally.

The clause of the IRPH mortgage loan could be null.

When instead of replacing it with the IRPH of entities, it refers to a fixed interest IN today’s article we are going to talk about the nullity of the IRPH, in those loans contrary to law 14/2013. Although most of the courts are not agreeing the nullity of the IRPH, there is a type of IRPH clause that is being declared null.

Legal approach Law 14/2013, related to En‐ trepreneurs, abolished some in‐ terest benchmarks. Thus, it sup‐ pressed those known as the IRPH for banks and the IRPH for savings banks (cajas). Agreeing that these would be replaced by what is known as the IRPH of en‐ tities. Which name is: The average rate of mortgage loans for more than three years, for the acquisition of free prop‐ erties; granted by credit institu‐ tions in Spain.

Invalidity of the IRPH clause in some cases Some mortgage loans contain an interest clause, which re‐ ferred to the IRPH of banks or savings banks, which disap‐ peared. And on the loans, it is es‐ tablished that if these disap‐ peared, the loan would be

governed from that moment, as per the last calculated interest, before the elimination by law of this IRPH. Thus, these loans are contrary to the 2013 law indicat‐ ed. Because, when the IRPH of banks and savings banks disap‐ peared, they had to refer to the IRPH of Entities.

Or to the Euribor if that was agreed in the mortgage loan. But this is not the case, as the bank established in its clause that the last interest that could have been calculated would be ap‐ plied, for the rest of the loan.

Typical example of null IRPH clause The typical examples of this kind of clauses are: First, it is stated that the inter‐ est would be calculated accord‐ ing to the IRPH of banks.

Second, they said that if the IRPH for banks disappears (which happened in 2013) the IRPH for savings banks would be

applied. Which also disappeared.

Finally, it is indicated by the bank, that if the two previous in‐ dices disappeared, the last calcu‐ lated interest would be applied, for the rest of the loan.

The reason for the invalidity of this type of IRPH clause Thus, this type of IRPH clause is being declared null. And the reasons are the following.

1. They are contracts where instead of replacing the IRPH of savings banks and banks, by the one indicated by the law of 2013; it is replaced by another interest. Therefore, it does not fulfil the law.

2. In addition, when these IRPH have disappeared, the last interest of the last revision calcu‐ lated before the disappearance of the year 2013, applies to the rest of the loan. This means that it becomes a fixed rate loan. That goes against the aim and the na‐ ture of the contract. Well it was a

variable interest loan.

Court Precedents Thus, the Provincial Court of Alicante, Section: 8, in its court order 918/2020, said: That in addition to the argu‐ ments indicated, this clause itself is not transparent. Well, in the event of the disappearance of the IRPH indices, the loan be‐ comes fixed, without the con‐ sumer having been sufficiently informed of the consequences.

Legal consequence of the in‐ validity of this type of IRPH clause The legal consequence of the nullity of this type of IRPH clause is: ‐ The application of the IRPH of Entities, according to Law 14/2013, instead of the last in‐ terest rate calculated. ‐ The recalculation of the amortisation table and return of the overpaid.

Unvaccinated Philippines threatened

THE President of the Philip‐ pines has warned unvacci‐ nated people “For all I care, you can die any time.”

President Rodrigo Duterte issued a stark warning to those refusing Covid‐19 vac‐ cines during an address to the nation.

He said, “For those who do not want it, well, for all I care, you can die any time.”

He also wants the police to restrict the movement of people who refuse coron‐ avirus vaccines.

“To those people who do

not want to be vaccinated, I am telling you, don’t go out of your house. If you go out of your house, I will tell the police to return you to your home. You will be escorted back to your house because you are a walking spreader,” he added.

According to data from the World Health Organisa‐ tion, only 6 per cent of peo‐ ple in the Philippines are vaccinated. Duterte previ‐ ously threatened to jail peo‐ ple who refuse to get a coro‐ navirus vaccine.

Mixed emotions ON August 1, an episode of A New Life in the Sun, the Channel 4 programme, took a look back at the time couple Mark and Natalia set up their Spanish water sports business in June 2019 in Costa Blanca.

Their business got off to a booming start, and the couple set up a paddleboarding business in another location. Speaking about their new busi‐ ness venture, Mark began: “It’s going to be fun trying to attract the new marketplace. Like I say, we are always up for a new challenge.”

Mark explained that their second business needed a cash injection and ended up spending €10,000 on new equipment.

Time was of the essence, and with only three months left of the season, the couple desperately needed to have a busy summer in order to claw

When Channel 4 producers revisited the pair in September 2020, they discovered that the couple had hit another hurdle because of the pandemic, and as a result, they decided not to reopen their second paddleboarding site.

In a final bid to earn more income, the couple ended up opening up a fresh‐food café on the coast which, to their great relief, has ended up being a huge success.

Attack on Samuel THE homophobic attack on Samuel Luiz lasted six fatal minutes and he was hit with a bottle and a metal object it has been revealed as the investiga‐ tion into his murder con‐ tinues.

A Coruña’s Examining Magistrate’s Court Num‐ ber 8 lifted the secrecy rul‐ ing that had been im‐ posed on proceedings allowing details of the bru‐ tal attack on Samuel to emerge. Samuel Luiz was killed after he was violent‐ ly assaulted on July 3. Two men are currently in cus‐ tody.

DNA reports also di‐ rectly link the suspects to the attack, according in‐ vestigators. The DNA was matched to samples tak‐ en from Samuel’s body and clothes and with a glass bottle which was used to attack him.

Renfe historical train purchase ISAÍAS Táboas, the president of Renfe, and Leopoldo Maestu, the president of Alstom Spain and Portugal, have togeth‐ er signed an award contract, which, with an endowment of €1,447 million is ‘the largest in the history of the railway in Spain’, as the company acquired 152 high‐capacity Cercanías trains from Al‐ stom.

This award was approved by the Renfe Board of Directors last March, and includes, in addition to the 152 trains, the parts of the fleet, the initial ware‐ house of spare parts and their tools, and the maintenance of 56 vehicles for 15 years.

As both parties reported in a state‐ ment on Monday, July 26, the trains will be manufactured in the Industrial Cen‐ tre that the company has in Santa Per‐ petua de Mogoda, in Barcelona, and will allow the creation of some 500 direct jobs, plus another 1,000 indirect ones.

Each of the new trains will have a ca‐ pacity of at least 900 seats, 20 per cent more than the current Civia, will be fully accessible to people with reduced mo‐ bility, and will minimise the time of get‐ ting off and on for passengers.

Memorial to fallen police officers THE Prince of Wales paid tribute to the “valour and sacrifice” of police officers and staff at the unveiling of a national memorial dedicated to those who have “laid down their lives to keep us safe.”

Spanish cities among ‘Top 100 Destinations’ THE famous American Time magazine has published its prestigious list of the 100 best destinations in the world for 2021, a list compiled after consulting with their network of correspondents, journalists, and collaborators.

Featured in this year’s Top 100 list are the two Spanish cities of Caceres, in the au‐ tonomous community of Ex‐ tremadura, and Santiago de Compostela, which is the capi‐ tal of the autonomous com‐ munity of Galicia, in the north‐ west of Spain.

The old town of Caceres, is a unique mix of Roman, Islamic, Gothic, and Renaissance archi‐ tecture, surrounded by large stone walls, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Small girl dies alone A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl who was in critical condition after a fire in a flat broke out on July 28, has sadly died.

The little girl died in the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona. According to sources close to the investigation, she was alone in the flat with the door locked at the time of the incident.

The Catalan police are now investigating the reason as to why the partner of the girl’s mother left the apartment while she was at work. The same sources say that the man returned when the fire was already advanced.

When the mother became aware of the incident she rushed to the flat and had to be treated for shock.

According to reports, the fire originated in the double bedroom on the upper floor, however, the cause has not yet been determined. The fire brigade was called at 7.28pm and seven firemen attended.

Lower cost of Covid testing THE travel industry has called on the government to lower the cost of Covid-19 tests as the cost can run into hundreds of pounds and is prohibitive for many travellers, especially families.

ABTA, an association representing British travel agencies, welcomed the government’s move to open quarantine travel for double vaccinated EU and US tourists, but said the government must do more to support the industry and offer holidaymakers “affordable” PCR tests.

“It’s also good to see the government taking positive steps to open up international travel with the US and the EU, and we hope this will be the first step to reciprocal arrangements that will help the travel industry to get back on its feet,” a spokesperson for ABTA said on July 28.

“However, the industry is not out of the woods and there is more that needs to be done to support travel businesses through to recovery. We know the sector is facing a more gradual relaxation of restrictions than the domestic economy, and we need to see a tailored package of support measures to recognise that, including ongoing furlough and income support schemes, full business rates relief, and consideration of tailored grants schemes.

Oldest paintings in world A TEAM of scientists have been able to confirm the origins of the oldest paintings in the world and they are in fact from Spain. An international team of researchers have confirmed that the red marks discovered in a Malaga cave in Ardales, were in fact made by humans. The marks were also made a staggering 65,000 years ago.

According to researchers the marks are not of a natural origin. They have proven that the marks in the cave were made by Neanderthals and that they would have had to return on several occa‐ sions to make the marks. The marks were made intentionally and are located on a stalagmite in the middle of a large room.

Mayor’s car up in flames THE mayor of Belalcazar, Francisco Luis Fernández (PSOE) in Cordoba, was shocked to find that his car had been set ablaze at around 4am on Tuesday Ju‐ ly 27.

According to reports the mayor confirmed that a neighbour of his was able to alert him to the fact that the car had been set on fire as he was leaving for work and spotted the blaze. The

LOCAL POLICE were called to an apartment in Lugo after neighbours complained that they could not sleep due to loud music playing. To the surprise of the officers, there was no par‐ ty or people inside the property, instead, they found a clever cat that had managed to turn the sound system up to maxi‐ mum volume!

After attending the building and realising that there wasn’t a party being held, they managed to contact the owner of the apartment, who was out of the area, who informed them that “what had activated the stereo was his cat that was left in the house, since it has the habit of turning on the music equipment with its foot and turning the volume wheel.”

The owner returned to the residence immediately.

Fuel fraud arrest BADAJOZ FC president, Joaquin Parra, is among five people arrested over their alleged involvement with a €13 million IVA fraud on large quantities of fuel.

Parra, a businessman, was arrested on July 27, along with four others, as part of a police operation that covered five provinces in southern Spain.

In a top-secret operation, officers from the Citizen Security Unit in Badajoz worked in collaboration with officials of the Tax Agency. The operation which took place simultaneously in the provinces of Sevilla, Malaga, Madrid, Cadiz, and Badajoz. Malaga Guardia Civil conducted a search of the offices of CD Badajoz in the Nuevo Vivero Stadium. At the same time as the raid on the Badajoz stadium, officers also sealed off the offices of the Extrem Petrol company, located in Plaza de España, in Badajoz, along with the Derby Group gas stations in the commercial capital of Badajoz, linked to the Parra.

Badajoz FC plays in the First RFEF, the third category of Spanish football.

A brief statement issued by the club said that officers from the Guardia Civil and Tax Agency personnel had requested “accounting documents.”

“Once the request has been met, the club has returned to its normal activity,” the statement added.

Coca-Cola recycling BOTTLE TOPS: The new style bottles are being tested in Spain.

INTERNATIONAL beverages giant, Coca-Cola, has joined the initiative against the use of single-use plastics, announcing that the company has chosen Spain as the country in Europe in which it will trial a new recyclable bottle top, with a 10-week trial starting in various parts of the country, including Malaga, Sevilla, Granada, Almeria, Catalonia, Jaen, Toledo, Cadiz, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, the Balearic Islands, and Aragon, although the company hopes to distribute throughout the whole of Spain eventually.

Coca-Cola has distributed six million of the newstyle 500-millilitre bottles throughout Spain, of not only their original brand beverage, but also from their range of Zero sugar-free, Coca-Cola Light, and Zero caffeine-free versions, as well as Schuss.

Their R&D factory in Brussels is responsible for the design of these new tops, an alternative that its engineers have thought about to try to further reduce the footprint that the marketing of these sugary drinks leaves in the environment, while conforming to EU Directives on single-use plastics, and in order to preserve the fizziness of the drink, the designers have taken extra care to ensure that the bottle top can be hermetically resealed properly after it has been opened.

In America, Coca-Cola has already produced the first bottle made entirely from 100 per cent recycled waste paper, continuing its commitment to the campaign, ‘A World without Waste’, which in Europe is complemented by the well-known campaign, ‘We advance’.

RNLI donations RNLI donations have increased by over 2,500 per cent after Nigel Farage criticised the charities for rescuing migrants from the English Channel.

The charity announced its donations have increased following the criticism.

Jayne George, RNLI fundraising director, said: “We are overwhelmed with the huge level of support we have received from our amazing supporters in the last couple of days.

“We have seen an uplift in donations, with over £200,000 being donated in just one day alone through a combination of one-off donations, new regular support and supporters increasing their regular donation amount.

“This is simply incredible.”

Nigel Farage had previously said the RNLI was providing a “taxi service for illegal trafficking gangs.”

Chief Executive Mark Dowie said lifeboat crews were “doing the right thing,” however.

On July 28, the charity released a video on social media explaining why it rescues migrants from the English Channel.

It wrote: “Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger and distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious.”

Speaking about the rise in donations, Ms George said: “This was never a fundraising campaign - we simply wanted to tell the story of our crews and make it clear that our charity exists to save lives at sea.

“Our mission is to save everyone.

“Our supporters’ kindness means so much to us, without them we could not save lives at sea, every one is a lifesaver.”

She said: “We know that this is a polarising issue and people have strong opinions on the subject.

“Sadly, a small number of supporters have contacted us to withdraw their support.”

THE Swedish ferry company Stena Line is to introduce two new larger and faster ferries on the route between Ventspils in Latvia and Nynäshamn in Sweden which is the shortest route between the Baltic States and Scandinavia. The vessels will carry passengers and freight.

Beekeeping farm razed A BEEKEEPING farm with 11 hives in‐ stalled on the roof of a home in the Sevillian municipality of Camas has been dismantled by the Guardia Civil.

Guardia Civil’s Roca team, which specialises in investigating agricultural crimes, said they were aware of the existence of the hives after they had carried out a series of investigations in the area relating to thefts of materials involved in beekeeping.

Neighbours had also made com‐ plaints.

Given the unusual location of the beekeeping farm, in the centre of the town, officers first had to determine if it was in any way connected to crime groups.

Officers went to the home to in‐ spect the bee farm and the owner vol‐ untarily allowed them inside to have a look at the 11 fully operational bee‐ hives and their bees.

The hives were registered to the owners of the house.

However, since the bee farm was built in a residential area it was deemed to be illegal.

Professor Kristian Helin will soon become the chief executive and president of the Institute for Cancer Research. Speaking to Times Higher Education, Helin said: “The difference between this virus and cancer is that Covid is, by and large, one disease with a very well‐understood genome. Cancer is much more complex, it’s more like 400 types of disease for which you need to develop therapies.

“It shows how important fundamental research is ‐ basic re‐ search developed over many years allowed vaccine researchers who weren’t working on coronavirus to address this critical issue.

“Fundamental biological research is not so different ‐ scientists working on cancer and on different diseases could develop differ‐ ent techniques to test and treat cancer.

“We have achieved quite a lot in cancer research over the past 20 years. It’s massive to see the impact that science and treat‐ ments have on people’s lives ‐ at the ICR, an institution which spans the whole spectrum of activity.

“I now have the keys to facilitate what is already very strong re‐ search.”

The Danish scientist is set to start work in London after a series of challenges have hit Cancer research in the UK, and sadly this in‐ cludes Brexit too. Post‐Brexit, the UK is finding it harder to attract European scientists to the country.

Morrisons takeover THERE is some doubt con‐ cerning the feasibility of a takeover as Morrisons’ share price is higher than the value of the offer by Fortune con‐ sortium.

A statement from Mor‐ risons’ largest shareholder Silchester International said “it is not inclined to support” the £6.3 (€6.93) billion pri‐ vate equity‐backed takeover deal for the supermarket chain. Although the Mor‐ risons’ board has recom‐ mended the deal, it has to be

approved by 75 per cent of shareholders and Silchester owns 15.14 per cent, so is in a very strong position to try to influence the outcome of the bid.

The offer on the table is £2.52p (€2.79c) per share plus a small dividend, but it ap‐ pears that the market be‐ lieves this to be less than the company is worth as for more than a week the share price has hovered around £2.66 (€2.93).

Some experts argue that Morrisons has undervalued its properties and therefore if it undertook a review, share‐ holders would see the value of the company increase con‐ siderably rather than let the consortium benefit.

My urbanisation in Mallorca has four blocks, and a total of 16 apartments. We pay our com‐ munity fees based upon the size of each apartment.

But every apartment (regardless of the size) pays the same amount towards the sinking fund. Is this legally correct? The president would like to have all of the ur‐ banisation repainted at a cost of €100,000. His idea is to fund this by taking €20,000 from the sinking fund, and the remaining €80,000 by a one‐time €5,000 charge from each apartment owner. Can he request the same amount from the smallest apartment owners as the largest?

The Hori‐ zontal Law in Article 9, para‐ YOU AND THE LAW graph (f), states IN SPAIN clearly that mem‐ bers of the community shall contribute to the reserve fund according to their quotas, that is, their assigned community fees. However, it also provides in paragraph (e) for the establishment of other systems. ON July 27, gas infrastructure oper‐ ator Enagas confirmed first half fig‐ ures down on 2020 at €213.1 mil‐ lion compared to €236 million.

UNEMPLOYMENT in Spain fell by 15.26 per cent in the second quarter of 2021 according to figures released by the Nation‐ al Statistics Institute (INE).

This was slightly down on the first quarter figures but is still a positive sign of how the workforce is recovering follow‐ ing the pandemic and lock‐ down.

The number of employed persons increased by 464,000 in the second quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter to 19,671,700.

A separate statement by Economy Minister Nadia Calvi‐ no said that the government was forecasting unemploy‐ ment to be 15 per cent by the end of 2021 and 1 per cent low‐ er in 2022.

Currency outlook: Coronavirus resurgence bolsters the US dollar, Euro sees brief spike after ECB alters inflation target

Euro EUR/GBP: Unchanged at £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.19 to $1.17 The euro has faced some headwinds this month, as a notable pickup in the US dollar has weighed on the single currency as a result of the strong negative correlation between the pairing.

The euro did enjoy a brief spike after the Euro‐ pean Central Bank (ECB) adopted a new inflation target, a move which was deemed to have bol‐ stered its credibility.

However, the ECB’s latest rate decision proved to be less supportive of EUR exchange rates, with the euro retreating after the bank sig‐ nalled that interest rates are likely to remain on hold for quite some time yet.

Looking ahead, a resurgence of coronavirus cases in Europe could act as a headwind for the euro in the coming weeks, and offset the sup‐ port of some positive EUR data releases.

Pound GBP/EUR: Unchanged at €1.16 GBP/USD: Down from $1.38 to $1.37 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, mostly as a result of mixed coronavirus developments in the UK. While Sterling sentiment was initially buoyed by the government’s decision to lift all remaining restrictions in England, this has becoming in‐ creasingly undermined by an alarming rise in do‐ mestic coronavirus cases.

This resulted in the pound plummeting in the second half of July as GBP investors began to question the sustainability of the reopening.

Also infusing some volatility in Sterling has been some conflicting messages from within the

Bank of England (BoE), in regards to whether the bank should look towards tapering its stimulus programme in the coming months.

Looking ahead, we could see the pound face an uphill battle in August if UK coronavirus infec‐ tions continue to surge at a worrying pace, while the BoE’s next rate decision will be closely watched by GBP investors seeking more clarity on the bank’s policy outlook.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.71 to £0.72 USD/EUR: Up from €0.83 to €0.84 The US dollar enjoyed broad support through‐ out much of July, as souring market sentiment prompted investors to favour the safe‐haven ‘greenback’.

This came amidst a resurgence of coronavirus cases in many parts of the world and the result‐ ing uncertainty over the global economic recov‐ ery.

Also helping to reinforce the upside in USD ex‐ change rates this month was the latest US con‐ sumer price index, which reported inflation rock‐ eted up to 5.4 per cent in June and reignited speculation over the tapering of the Federal Re‐ serve’s stimulus programme.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the US dollar, as a dovish statement from Fed Chair Jerome Powell as he testified before Congress quashed some of this speculation.

Going forward, with the Delta variant still rav‐ aging much of the world, the US dollar is likely to maintain its positive trajectory in the coming weeks, although an underwhelming payroll re‐ port could act as a speedbump for the ‘green‐ back’.

I Hate to say I told you so...

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I HAVE always been a Corona vaccination sceptic. Irrespective of how many times medical ‘experts’ inform us they are all completely safe, or how the advantages far outweigh the risks etc, the one indisputable fact remains that with all their expertise and vast resources, these people cannot reproduce real time.

Until the true long term effects of whatever they are shoving into us all are revealed, we will never know if these drugs are advantageous or the end of civilisation as we know it. Irrespective of how pious they appear, I don’t believe for an instant that governments are morally driven by the decisions they have made to vaccinate the world. I also doubt it is the pharmaceutical companies wishing to swell their already overflowing coffers.

Why should they?

They are already supplying trillions of citizens with conventional drugs. Rocking that particular boat by killing off the customers would achieve nothing. No, at the root of this whole unsavoury prevention experiment lays power.

Governments need to get the workforces

If they don’t, their economies and power bases could literally crumble around their ears. The foundations of their world order are already built on paper and greed; it wouldn’t take much to turn it all into dust. As a Taoist I’ve never accepted the way they run the

As far as the Jab is concerned, at my age It is unlikely I will even be around to experience the long term effects, so I may as well meet the terms of our ‘controllers’ and benefit from any advantages they may offer to those of us who ‘toe the line’. (Some of you may remember I forecast the

introduction of vaccination passports months ago ‐ hate to say I told you so!)

Since having both jabs some 10 weeks ago I have actually suffered a succession of niggling headaches which I’m not too happy about. Still at least I have resisted the temptation to thrust my opinions on others. To my mind, often well

intentioned people who try to influence their peers into following their advice are in fact uncertain themselves and are merely seeking reassurance. Well I have the utmost respect for all of them.

However my decision to have this vaccination was a wholly personal preference, carefully weighed up and initiated accordingly. In am not simple minded or ill‐informed and certainly not easily led. So don’t worry about me, personally I’m fine. It’s the youngsters I worry about. I’m not sure I would want to be a teenager in the sort of world we are bequeathing! Perhaps when we come out the other end of all this chaos we will find ourselves in a better place. Dream on Leapy!

What a load of absolute tosh!

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man IF you read any UK newspaper or belong to any social media you cannot have missed Piers Morgan’s vitriolic, totally out of order comments about young, mostly women, athletes having problems with the pressure and how it’s affecting their mental health.

With no knowledge of what they are going through he condemns them and totally dismisses what they are saying. Of course, there is his continual spewing of bile about Meghan Markle.

This coming from a man that was fired from the Daily Mirror, fired from CNN and fired from GMB. I actually believe he is so desperate to keep himself in the headlines that he attacks these kids just for this purpose. He has a young daughter and I guess he would go nuts if some middle-aged man verbally attacked her. It doesn’t matter why they quit - no young person who’s at the top of their game should be belittled by an overweight, self-opinionated hack whose only athletic achievement is sprinting off set when a colleague upset him that can’t hold down any job. Just respect someone’s wish-

es and don’t try and cash in on their decisions because you don’t know what mental turmoil they are going through.

The Scottish Government has been accused of trying to “erase” women after a tweet referring to “pregnant people”. Several social media users, including politicians, were quick to criticise the phrasing - however others claimed the post was “inclusive”.

This nonsense has to stop. There is no such thing as pregnant people. There are pregnant women - end of OK? Stop all this ‘inclusive’ nonsense. It’s just all too much. I have mentioned this before but it’s just getting worse every day. On the same day I saw that whenever you sign a document or email you should put your pronoun there too. So from now on I’m known as Grumpy. Him, Mr, He, I - if that’s even allowed. What a load of absolute tosh!

Anyone else have the problem with public loos that have automatic lighting in them? I had to use one the other day and obviously overstayed my allotted time. I’m now in there in the pitch black doing a Mexican wave hoping that it will be enough to turn the lights back on. Then they go off again as I’m trying to wash my hands and dry them with the one tissue left in the container!

Vaccinations and price rises Dear Sirs As the fourth wave of the virus progresses and more and more people contest the restrictions or to be vaccinated or use the Covid passport; it seems scandalous that all of a sudden there are calls for a third injection which questions the value of the vaccines, while at the same time Big Pharma announce price rises.

Any economist would tell you that as production increases economy of scale brings down prices.

A TRUE STORY JUST over a week ago a 40-yearold self employed woman who now has Spanish residencia was delighted to become eligible to be vaccinated.

In fact. she was given the single shot Janssen vaccine and she was happy that she would be protected to a great extent against infection from Covid-19.

A few days later, her husband who is older than her received his second AstraZeneca inoculation but seemed to be suffering from quite unpleasant side effects and then both of them started to experience flu like infections.

CORRECTIONS

And the EU just accepts the increases without any question. This is robbery on a major scale of our money and should be resisted if we are to believe in the vaccination programme.

I am a big rugby league fan and I was watching the RL Challenge Cup Final on the BBC two weeks ago, between St Helens and Castleford.

Shortly before kick off the cameras showed all the Saints players on their part of the pitch ‘"taking the knee.’ Of the Castleford players? Not a sign.

Because they did not kneel. Absolutely outrageous propaganda, but so predictable.

There is almost no racial bias in rugby league which is why it remains a family sport.

The Antigen and PCR tests both show ongoing infection with SARS‐CoV‐2, the virus that causes Covid‐19. The difference between the tests lies in how accurate they are, the methods used to de‐ tect the virus and the cost.

The Antigen test is a rapid test that detects ac‐ tive ongoing infection of the virus. Compared to a PCR test it is not as sensitive but the advantage is that it responds very quickly and is ready within 15 minutes, also being a less expensive option if your destination country accepts this test.

A PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is con‐ sidered one of the most accurate tests to prevent the spread of the virus and can be taken regard‐ less of whether you have symptoms or not. In cer‐

PARENTS of children called Alexa say their daughters are being bullied be‐ cause it is the same name that Amazon uses for its virtual assistant. Some have even changed their child’s name because they say the onslaught of Alexa jokes is ‘relentless’, where people shout their name and issue a command. They are calling on Amazon to alter the default wake word for its devices to a non‐hu‐ man name.

As for Amazon, it says it is ‘saddened’ by these complaints, and that there are alternative wake words. It is nonetheless true that the word Alexa has become in‐ creasingly common recently as more households use voice‐activated smart speakers.

But names can be a problem anyway, can’t they? There was a girl called An‐

ALEXA: Girls are being bullied because it is the same name as the Amazon product. nette Curtin in a friend’s class at school.

Poor girl had to stick with that name but probably got away with blue murder as nobody could see through her. I suppose it depended on whether you were out‐ side looking in or inside looking out.

Fish is a reasonable enough surname, but I did encounter one such with the

first name Marina. There was, too, a Veronica Davis. Not a problem until she had to write her initials on her belong‐ ings. One neighbour’s GP was a Dr Heal; another a Dr Richard Sole, or as it said on his brass plate Dr R Sole.

At school, like most kids, we all had nicknames. I often wonder what hap ‐

pened to Fudgy Buttocks. Doubtless came to a sticky end. And what about Paige Worthy, Anne Teak or even Randy Clapp?

It’s maybe apocryphal but I seem to re‐ call the City University of Newcastle upon Tyne having to rebrand due to its less than auspicious acronym. In Ireland all the old regional technical colleges re‐ named themselves as institutes of tech‐ nology and generally became known by their initials, presumably so they could remind people of MIT. So Cork’s became CIT etc. The one exception to the trend was Tipperary, which just called itself ...

Tipperary Institute. Nuff said.

By shopping at an indepen‐ dent store you’re putting food on a local family’s table, and there is no better time than now to give back to your community by mak‐ ing a small gesture and shopping in this way.

Many local stores support lo‐ cal charities, support and sponsor local sports teams and in many cases the small independent stores are actually much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous generations and support not just

the current owner but the gener‐ ation before.

For those stores which are new, that extra couple of euros spent there are supporting someone’s dream and ambition, and also the courage it took them to step out alone, which is no easy task. It takes quite a large chunk of money to set up an in‐ dependent store and compete with the multinational and chains.

So be sure to pre‐order your meat from a local butcher and get your spuds from a local greengrocer, let us revive that community spirit and get to know our neighbours again.

You could also consider pur‐ chasing gift vouchers from local businesses to help them over the coming weeks, thinking outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an online study course for someone looking to

change their career path.

As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is important too. Whilst it’s nice to give a glamourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping people alleviate stress and worry , give the gift of peace of mind through these dif‐ ficult times. Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays lo‐ cal, and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. First, buy‐ ing local keeps money circulating within the local economy. Stud‐ ies have shown that local busi‐ nesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as they create lo‐ cally owned supply chains and in‐ vest in their employees.

Data shows that local retailers return 52 per cent of their rev‐ enue back into the local econo‐

my, compared to just 14 per cent for national chain retailers.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction.

For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce. First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn prepares the fresh produce and sells it to local cus‐ tomers. The farmer pays its local employees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbourhood hardware store.

This example illustrates how the recirculation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and communi‐ ties. Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportuni‐ ties for people within our com‐ munity.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time. A fantastic example of how to support your local community is with a Charity Gift certificate, why not donate to your loved one’s favourite cause.

Just remember to follow the latest government advice and any guidance businesses have to keep everyone safe.

Men’s dining outing Gandia Festival kicks off

DINING GROUP: Enjoyed a leisurely afternoon with great food and good friendly service.

THE Calpe U3A Men’s Dining Group has met with a mixed group of Calpe members and guests from Moraira.

According to the dining group, they “enjoyed a leisurely afternoon, great food and good friendly service.”

The outing took place on two tables at the Punjabi restaurant in Calpe.

The Men’s Dining Group has now been running for a few years and meets on the last

Thursday of every month for dinner in a Calpe restaurant, though occasionally one is held nearer to Moraira for members living that way.

Restaurants are chosen either by recommendation of members or to try somewhere new, and they look for a set menu to suit all tastes.

Magnum Concert Productions Present a Fabulous Tribute to Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley

FOOD BANK: A total of €200 was donated in order to purchase food and toiletries.

THE U3A in Marina Baixa has met with local councillors to donate €200 for the food bank.

Two members of the U3A Marina Baixa organisation met with the Callosa D’En Sarria mayor and two councillors at Consum in Callosa to purchase food and toiletries for the food bank. Callosa Council’s services covers the villages of Beniarda, Benifato, Benimantell, Bolulla, Castell de Guadalest, Confrides, Polop, Tarbena, as well as the

town of Callosa D’En Sarria.

Taking part in the meeting were Liz Potter, vice president of the U3A, mayor, Andres Molina, Maria Carmen Bou, councillor for Education, Maria Isabel Ferrandiz, councillor for Health and Culture, and Linda Cox, a member of the U3A. U3A Marina Baixa hold a raffle at their monthly meetings and all proceeds are donated to local charities. Members often donate prizes to reduce over-

heads and maximise funds raised.

The first show planned for Sunday September 19 features two of the best acts here on the Costa Blanca, with J J Jones’s tribute to Neil Dia‐ mond and Simon Patrick’s tribute to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Pres‐ ley.

Tango night at the castle THE Castillo de Cullera will be hosting a tango night on Saturday August 7.

Argentine singer Analia Bueti, ‘the ambassador of tango in the Valencian Community,’ will perform.

Sponsored by the Argentine Embassy in Spain for her work, Analia Bueti has been living in Valencia for 16 years, performing different tango musical shows. She has participated in several tango festivals, has made several albums and was organiser of an international tango festival based in Valencia.

She will perform accompanied by the Mar del Plata pianist Mariano Siccardi and different musicians. Pairs of dancers will also perform.

Javea Players THE Javea Players will be performing ‘Love Letters’ at the Studio Theatre.

The play will be staged from September 22 to 24 and September 29 to October 1.

Love Letters is about Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position and childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years. Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, whereas Melissa flunks out of a series of ‘good schools’.

While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he also marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the US Senate.

DAVID WORBOYS WHAT is a civilised country? Is it a country with a rich cultural heritage or a country upholding high stan‐ dards of humanity? Some countries, such as Iran, had an impressive civili‐ sation in the past but, by today’s ex‐ pectations of human rights and re‐ sponsible government, are quite uncivilised.

The ancient civilisations of counties such as Egypt, Mexico and China pro‐ duced impressive artistic and architec‐ tural achievement. The great muse‐ ums of Cairo, Mexico City and Beijing bear witness to this. The pyramids of Giza and Teotihuacan and the Great Wall of China are there for all to see.

But at what human cost were they created?

Egypt’s pyramids, dating from 2600 BC were built by mainly young labour‐ ers. They were recompensed in bread and beer but, exhausted by heavy labour in the heat, suffered appalling injuries to limbs, lungs and spine. Few of them reached the age of 40.

The Aztecs, meanwhile, practised the cutting of children’s throats by way of sacrifice to the gods in whose names they were built. This ‘civilisation’ was eventually brutally repressed and largely extermi‐ nated by the Conquistadores.

As many as 400,000 forced labour‐ ers died in terrible conditions in the erection of the Great Wall of China, from 600 BC, thousands of whom re‐ main buried underneath or within the wall. The victims included prisoners‐ of‐war and convicts as well as inno‐ cent soldiers, peasants and slaves.

And how civilised are these coun‐ tries today? Egypt’s human rights are hardly better than those of Iran or Saudi Arabia. Both Egypt and China al‐ so have serious animal rights issues, while Mexico is politically a more civilised country, but plagued with vio‐ lent drug wars, crime and poverty.

While, in general, the Chinese are cruel to animals, they themselves have severely limited rights under the cur‐ rent aggressive autocratic system.

There are no free media and no toler‐ ance of criticism of the regime. Stan‐ dards of public cleanliness and individ‐

ual health are poor. Compared, for ex‐ ample, with Singapore it is not a civilised 20th‐century country.

Conversely, neither Sweden, Singa‐ pore nor Australia has a great ancient civilisation. Instead, they offer a rela‐ tively free, healthy and secure way of life. In terms of human rights and liber‐ ties, mature governance and quality of life, they are highly civilised. Other countries may define their civilisation today by a vibrant cultural scene with art galleries, theatres, music and cui‐ sine.

Fair and transparent justice and po‐

litical systems, together with care for the sick and elderly, the underprivi‐ leged, animals and the environment, are also the features of a civilised soci‐ ety.

The Greek and Roman civilisations have a significant legacy. And both Greece and certainly Italy are, by glob‐ al standards, civilised members of the EU today.

For example, in Murcia, the coast of Galicia, on the borders with Portu‐ gal and France, on the coast be‐ tween Cádiz and Huelva, in the Ca‐ nary and Balearic Islands and in the cities of Ceuta and Melilla; there are certain areas with such restrictions.

It is a restriction that seems obso‐ lete in current times, but it is fully in force and must be taken into ac‐ count because its effects may pre‐ vent the sale of a property.

In the case of inheritance, the system is less rigid since the law al‐ lows authorisation or to sell the property.

RESTRICTIONS: Are in place in certain areas.

All nationals of non‐EU countries, including Great Britain from January 1, 2021, who want to buy a property in the area of Cartagena, the Strait of

Gibraltar, in the Bay of Cádiz, the bor‐ der with Portugal or with France and the Galician coast, depending on the area, may need the express authorisa‐

tion of the Ministry of Defence.

CURRENT SITUATION July 2021: One of the causes that eliminate the need for military authorisation is that

the urban planning plans are ap‐ proved by the Ministry of Defence, although all the urban planning plans of the affected populations are con‐ sidered approved, so it is no longer military authorisation that is neces‐ sary in urban farms, but it is still nec‐ essary in rustic farms, border towns or Ceuta and Melilla.

VOLKSWAGEN SPAIN has been ruled responsible by the Supreme Court for ‘dieselgate.’

The Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday, July 27, that Volkswagen Audi Spain, a subsidiary of the auto‐ mobile group, must compensate, for moral damages, a person af‐ fected by the manipulation of the diesel engines of the EA 189 mod‐ els, in what became known as the ‘dieselgate’ case, declaring that the

VW Spain to blame for ‘dieselgate’ distributor assumes the responsi‐ bility of its parent company.

In a judgement passed on July 27, the plenary session of the Civil Chamber of the high court insisted that the distributor was indirectly owned 100 per cent by Volkswa‐ gen, and had sent a letter to its cus‐ tomers in which it acknowledged

the incident and had offered to solve it through its official services.

This scandal dates back to September 2015, when it was dis‐ covered in the United States that the Volkswagen Group had delib‐ erately installed software in the diesel engines of the EA 189 mod‐ els that altered the vehicle’s pollut‐ ing emissions when it detected that it was being subjected to an inspection on the rollers of a lab‐ oratory. In the case analysed by the high court, it was established that the buyer had acquired in 2008, in an official Audi dealer, a model powered by a diesel en‐ gine type EA 189, manufactured

by Volkswagen, for €37,920.

Once the parent company publicly admitted the fraud and assumed responsibility, Volkswa‐ gen Audi Spain sent a letter to the buyer saying the engine of his vehicle needed to update the ‘software’, and apologised on be‐ half of the manufacturer for the inconvenience.

In 2016, the user filed a law‐ suit against the concessionaire and the distribution company, which he considered ‘direct and mainly responsible for the fraud committed and the resulting

consequences’. Specifically, it re‐ quested the nullity of the sale con‐ tract or, alternatively, the resolution for its breach, and claimed €11,376 for the non‐pecuniary damage suf‐ fered, and €6,644.71 for the inter‐ ests and financing expenses paid, meaning that in a subsidiary way, he had asked for €15,020 as com‐ pensation for the damages caused by the depreciation suffered in the value of the vehicle. The claim was dismissed both by the Court of First Instance and Instruction No3 of Leganés in Madrid, and by the Provincial Court of Madrid, which considered Volkswagen Audi Spain as a ‘mere importer or distributor’.

Now the Supreme Court has re‐ voked those verdicts, and defends that the subsidiary of the automo‐ bile group assumed in Spain the position of contractual responsibili‐ ty that the manufacturer has, with the magistrates supporting their decision that the share capital was 100 per cent owned by the Ger‐ man manufacturer, as well as in the letter sent to the buyers of the affected vehicles in Spain.

The terms of this communica‐ tion expressed its assumption of re‐ sponsibility as a manufacturer, and generated such confidence in the

recipients, points out the Supreme Court, which recalls that ‘frequent‐ ly, the importer and the distributor belong to the same corporate group as the manufacturer, or are integrated in a commercial net‐ work with them.’

The court understood the plain‐ tiff suffered non‐pecuniary damage as a result of the public scandal, as a result of the uncertainty and un‐ ease about the consequences he might have had to face, such as a possible tax penalty, the stoppage of his vehicle, or the restriction to certain urban areas, a circumstance to take into account, given the im‐ portance for a car buyer to have the assurance he will not be de‐ prived, even temporarily, of its use or be restricted to certain areas.

The Supreme Court qualified the distributor’s breach of contract as ‘intentional’, so it must be liable for all consequential damages, in‐ cluding moral ones, however, since it is not proven that the dealer even knew about the installation of the device, it does not attribute inten‐ tionality to it, nor does it claim any responsibility for moral damages.

WITH so many cars appearing to share style, equipment and technology these days manufac‐ turers have to identify that spe‐ cial something which sets them apart from the competition.

Some do it via special offers, ex‐ tra equipment and regular facelifts and others take a sim‐ pler route to success. One such maker is Suzuki.

The Japanese car maker re‐ cently celebrated its centenary and is known for small cars, SUVs and motorbikes along with ma‐ rine engines and ATVs. One of their best known, and most ad‐ mired, SUVs is the diminutive Jimny, which is a formidable off‐ road performer.

In slightly larger form their Vi‐ tara makes for a practical and comfortable on and off‐roader, with more than a dash of old fashioned style. Thanks to its straightforward boxy design you can pack a lot into the Vitara and it comes with a no‐nonsense, well‐built feel.

There’s just one power unit for the range and it’s a very good one too. The 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine also has an electric motor that helps economy, lowers emissions and gives a per‐ formance boost.

In a week of sometimes not so leisurely driving I notched up an average 46 mpg.
