Marina Alta Model Railway Club THE Marina Alta Model Railway Club has recently celebrated its fourth birthday in the club headquarters in Teulada. Despite the unavoidable limitations on attendance since March last year, the club has continued to thrive. Progress has continued to be made on all three of its layouts; one of which is a computer controlled digital 00 layout.

On this layout, it is possible to feed in a schedule and stand back while a succession of trains perform pre-programmed manouevres.

As well as running trains, members enjoy the challenges of building models and scenery, laying track, all manner of wiring and also programming the schedules on the computer.

Much time is dedicated to identifying, analysing and solving the inevitable issues that arise wherever electronics are employed. The club is fortunate in having members with a variety of skills and experience that can be shared, combined and applied to these tasks.

All three layouts would benefit from even more members to participate in their ongoing development and maintenance. The club welcomes anybody with an interest in model railways regardless of their previous experience and skills. Seaweed is a good sign

DENIA’S first period of stormy seas this summer deposited 160 tons of Posidonia Oceanica (Ocean Grass) on the town’s beaches.

Beach cleaning teams worked through the night to clear the beaches, although municipal sources emphasised that it would take time to remove all the seaweed. They also asked for patience on the part of the public, especially swimmers, as the lorries used to remove the Posidonia could only carry 10 tons at a time.

Most of the seaweed - 60 tons had washed up on the Marineta beach, with another 50 tons at Marge Roig, 30 tons at El Trampoli and 20 tons at Punta del Raset.

THE Vall del Pop Singers are inviting new members to join them on Tuesday afternoons in Alcalali.

This is a fun group and open to anybody of any age. Although the group is currently made up of ladies of a ‘certain age’ they would very much welcome men and women of all ages to come and join them.

They enjoy singing pop songs from the 60s to the present day.

Alicante selfemployed to receive aid ALICANTE Council will be injecting some €7.2 million into the economy.

The money comes to help those who have suffered from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The money will be available as aid to those who are self-employed and also to small businesses in Alicante who have up to 10 workers.

The town council approved grants of between €2,000 and €4,000. The money will come from €6.8 million credit which is still available for the second part of Plan Resistir. The plan initially had over €11 million, but over €4 million in aid was given out in March.

The number of applications that have been approved though exceeds the amount of money available. This means that the town hall will be supplementing the fund with a further €400,000 plus.

This additional money means that the town hall will be able to help the 3,112 self-employed people or small businesses who have had their applications approved.

NIBS EXTRA Covid-free THE Valencian Community still has 17 municipalities where no Covid cases have been reported since the pandemic began. Six of them - Benifato, Benillup, Bollulla, Famorca, Guadalest and Confrides - are located inland in Alicante Province. All have small populations and Bolulla with just 418 registered inhabitants is the largest.

UK tourists flock to Spain TOURISTS have been flocking to Spain after the UK government allowed vaccinated travellers to come back from amber list countries without quarantine from July 19.

The number of tourists making their way to Spain following the amber list changes on July 19 has increased dramatically, with airlines reporting higher numbers of planes arriving at airports.

In total, 489 flights were scheduled between the UK and Spain on the day the government began allowing travellers to amber list countries to come back without quarantine, representing a three-fold increase on the previous week.

JET2: Has restarted its flights between the UK and Spain.

The airports with the most flights were Palma de Mallorca, with 113 flights, Ibiza with 70, Alicante-Elche with 62, and Malaga with 59.

Meanwhile, airline Jet2 also reopened its flights between the two countries, allowing thousands of holidaymakers to enjoy a holiday in Spain.

ONCE again the Villa Romana open‐air museum in Albir is the setting for the Estiu Festiu (Festive Summer) concerts.

Rip currents THE Red Cross lifesaving ser‐ vice at Javea’s Arenal beach recently had to ban swimmers from its central section.

The lifesavers announced that while there was no dan‐ ger at either end of the beach, rip currents in the middle could prove deadly for even the strongest swimmers, they explained.

Waves entering at each end converged in the centre, cre‐ ating currents that swimmers unfamiliar with the beach have to fight against to the point of exhaustion in order to return to the shore.

The lifesavers, who know the Arenal beach like the back of their hand, keep a watchful eye on the dangerous central section, but revealed that swimmers are cooperating.

They are taking notice of the experts’ indications, with‐ out arguing, said Red Cross sources who thanked them for cooperating.

Fewer school run snarl-ups DRIVERS can now access the N‐332 from the Salto de Agua schools and sports complex.

More grant categories BENIDORM Town Hall has added four new sectors that will be eligible for the Generalitat’s Parentesis grants.

The deadline for the next round of official aid has also been extended to August 2, announced Em‐ ployment and Local Devel‐ opment councillor Monica Gomez. Self‐employed Benidorm residents, or the owners of small firms in‐ volved in beer‐manufac‐ ture, selling light vehicles and motor vehicles other than automobiles, broad‐ casting and television trans‐ missions are now included, Gomez explained.

Applications can be made until August 2 to the https://sede.benidorm.org website which also details all the categories eligible for assistance from the €3.2 million Parentesis fund fi‐ nanced by the Generalitat, the Diputacion provincial council and Benidorm Town Hall.

In addition to grants of up to €2,000 for self‐em‐ ployed or owners of small businesses, an extra €200 is available for each employ‐ ee who has been on the payroll since December 31, 2020. The town hall ex‐ pects to allocate €445,000 amongst a further 200 busi‐ ness‐owners and self‐em‐ ployed, having already paid out just over €2 million in the first round of grants.

Gandia City reshuffle THE central government’s Cabinet reshuffle last week produced an inevitable reshuffle at Gandia City Hall. Ryanair’s new routes RYANAIR has announced it is adding two more routes in Valen‐ cia.

The airline will operate a total of 53 routes on Ryanair flights in Valencia, including two new sum‐ mer routes.

Ryanair has launched its 2021 calendar in Valencia as part of its recovery from Covid. The airline will operate a total of 53 routes and more than 200 weekly flights, including four news routes, which will offer services to 3.1 million passengers per year.

Ryanair is restoring connectivi‐ ty to Valencia and recovering Spanish air traffic, while vaccina‐ tion campaigns continue across Europe in time for the peak holi‐ day season.

Jason McGuinness, Commercial Director at Ryanair, said: “As

Spain’s number 1 airline, we are delighted to contribute to the re‐ activation and growth of tourism in Valencia despite the challenges of the Covid‐19 pandemic.

“After the success of the vacci‐ nation campaigns, Spanish air traffic, led by Ryanair, will recover strongly in the summer of 2021 and, therefore, we are very happy to announce our schedule for the Valencian city’s airport.

“This calendar will mean the traffic of 3.1 million passengers per year through 53 routes, in‐ cluding summer and winter desti‐ nations such as Belfast, Fuerteventura, Baden (Germany) or Gdansk (Poland).”

WORTH PROTECTING: 17 Marina Alta mayors signed a manifesto protecting local muscatel.

The Supreme Court has ruled Valencia’s bode‐ gas may not use grapes grown in Alicante or Utiel‐ Requena if they wish to retain their own protect‐ ed Designation of Origin (DOP) label.

Utiel‐Requena is located in Valencia Province but has its own DOP label, putting its grapes off‐ limits for Valencian wines. The Supreme court rul‐ ing automatically annulled a verdict from the Va‐ lencian Community’s Upper Court of Justice that in 2019 ruled against Alicante and Utiel‐Requena retaining their own DOP labels. Much earlier, both areas joined forces in opposing attempts by the

regional government of the day to group all the region’s wines under the Valencia label in 2011.

They bitterly opposed a measure that erased their own DOP status going back to 1932, two of the oldest in Spain. Between them Alicante and Utiel‐Requena vineyards occupy 44,500 hectares of land. Most belong to family‐run bodegas culti‐ vating traditional Monastrell and Muscatel grapes.

Not only Alicante winemakers have a vested in‐ terest in protecting and promoting their wines, as Marina Alta mayors met last month in Jalon to sign a manifesto defending the local muscatel for its value as a wine as well as its archaeological and environmental importance.

Anemona T-shirt fundraiser ANEMONA recently pre‐ sented its 2021 t‐shirts.

The association hopes to sell 5,000 of them to raise funds for the self‐ help group that assists women with breast and gynaecological cancers.

“We want the t‐shirts to give visibility to the as‐ sociation and above all to the woman who are af‐ fected, or have been, by cancer,” explained Anemona’s president Maria Botella.

“We also hope to raise some money and to be able to make society aware of the problem,” she added during the presentation that was held on the Levante beach seafront and at‐ tended by Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez and the town hall’s Equality councillor, Angela Zaragozi.

While not losing sight of the pandemic and its possible effects, Anemona is currently preparing its activities for this year.

In 2020, the annual ‘Pink Tide’ that attracts thousands of participants each year could not be held owing to Covid re‐ strictions, but this year should be different.

“We are excited at the prospect of the March,” declared Botella, who added that the Anemona also hopes ‐ depending on the permitted capaci‐ ty ‐ for a public reading of its manifesto at the town hall.

Meanwhile the t‐ shirts, which cost €10 each, are on sale at Anemona’s headquar‐ ters in Benidorm’s Calle de la Biga.

Our readers think the government should have no say in what we eat

EATING MEAT: People didn’t plan to give it up entirely.

THE majority of our readers think that the government should not have any say in what and how much we eat.

After Alberto Garzon, the Min‐ ister for Consumer Affairs, sparked outrage when he said we should all cut down on or give up meat, we asked our readers if they agree and if they think too much meat is eaten in Spain.

President Sanchez said he likes his steaks ‘al punto’ and 57 per cent of our readers responded that it’s none of the government’s business and they would eat whatever they like!

Meanwhile, 19 per cent admit‐ ted that they thought that we should eat less meat, but didn’t plan to give it up entirely. The sur‐ vey also revealed that people think more meat is consumed in Spain than by the British, for ex‐ ample.

Finally, 23 per cent responded that we should all become vege‐ tarians.

Our readers spoke of the im‐ portance of understanding where what you eat comes from and un‐ derstanding the carbon footprint of it. Another argued that it is bet‐ ter to eat meat which has come from a farm nearby, than to con‐ sume avocados from California which “have to be flown halfway round the world, but kills millions of bees” she added, “or maybe use palm oil once we clear the Amazon to grow the palms, or possibly tofu, brought all the way from China in a ship.”

Spending Fake DGT traffic fines Lego flagship store recovery NATIONAL spending on tourism in June recovered to the prepandemic level. The summer season in Spain starts with encouraging data for the national tourism sector, at least with regard to Spanish trips.

While waiting for the arrival of international visitors to gradually normalise, which are still well below normal before the pandemic, national tourism spending soared to exceed the levels recorded two years ago, driven by the end of the regional closures after the ending of the State of Alarm last May. According to a BBVA Research report released on Monday, July 12, the spending of Spanish credit card users of this bank in provinces and communities other than those they reside in was four percentage points higher in the last week of June than that registered in the same month of 2019, something that had not happened until now at any time since the pandemic broke out.

POLICE are warning of a new scam of fake emails with DGT traffic fine de‐ mands after receiving thousands of com‐ plaints from drivers in Spain.

The General Directorate of Traffic al‐ ready alerted the public in December 2020 that this type of scam had returned.

The email is so good that it includes the official logos of the DGT itself and the Ministry of the Interior in order to lure its victims into the trap.

The aim of the false email is to encour‐ age the user to click on the supposed offi‐ cial form, after which they will be asked for their personal data in order to pay the supposed fine.

If, by any chance the user falls for the scam, a file will be downloaded in the background without them noticing. A banking‐type program known as Mekoito will then run and access the us‐ er’s bank account, squeezing every last euro out of it. This is based on a system capable of opening different windows and accessing different banking websites and pretending to be the user.

To avoid these deceptions, both the DGT and experts specialised in cyberse‐ curity recommend looking at the email and checking its domain to rule out possi‐ ble deceptions and scams as they do not use this format to notify drivers about fines.

TRAFFIC FINES: DGT will not send by email.

THE Lego group are set to open their first flagship store in Spain which is set to open towards the end of 2021 and will be located in Barcelona.

The Danish multinational firm announced that the new store will open hopefully before the Christmas campaign begins. This new store confirms the Lego commitment to Spain where they already have six certified shops. The shops are located in Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza and Sevilla.

The Lego flagship store will be located at Barcelona’s 9 Paseo de Gra‐ cia. Visitors will be treated to an impressive experience including an in‐ teractive discovery tree. The tree will be constructed from nearly one million Lego pieces. The tree is meant to express the Lego group’s com‐ mitment to the environment along with their commitment to inclusivi‐ ty.

UK Embassy commiserates with expats FROM July 19, British visitors coming to Spain do not have to quarantine when they return to the UK. But residents in Spain who have both doses of Covid vaccine will still be required to quarantine if going back to the UK prompting many to express their anger and disappointment.

The UK Embassy in Madrid said it understood the rules were causing annoyance.

“We have received many questions and comments about last week’s announcement that those UK Nationals who have been double-vaccinated by the NHS will, from July 19, be able to return from amber-list countries without the need to quarantine on their return,” the Embassy posted on its popular Facebook page on July 14.

“This is good news for anyone coming to visit you here in Spain, but we recognise the disappointment that this exemption does not apply to you. The government is taking a phased approach to amending requirements and is already exploring plans to remove quarantine for vaccinated non-UK residents arriving from amber countries later this summer, when it is safe to do so.

“We will update you as soon as we have further news on this. Meanwhile, you have the option of travelling to the UK and doing quarantine or using the Test to Release scheme to shorten your quarantine period. If you have been vaccinated here in Spain, we recommend getting the EU Covid digital certificate, which will be useful for travel within the EU,” the embassy added.

PCR test time now extended THE Ministry of Health has extended the validity of a PCR test to enter Spain to 72 hours.

The Spanish government has extended the period that PCR tests are valid to enter Spain for up to 72 hours, and to 48 hours for antigen tests.

The tests now admitted will be molecular nucleic acid amplification (NAAT) tests, including PCR tests, which have been taken within the 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain.

Antigen tests included in the common list of the European Commission will also be accepted provided that they are taken 48 hours before travelling to Spain.

The diagnostic test certificate must include the traveller’s name and surname, date of sample collection, type of test performed and issuing country.

UK’s new Covid regulations

EXPATS used to Spain’s rules about face masks, going out and Covid etiquette in a variety of settings, may be perplexed by a new set of rules in the UK, here is what you need to know.

People arriving to the UK from amber list countries will not have to quarantine if they are under 18 or have both doses of a Covid vaccine. But they will be asked to take a test three days before returning, and on or before the second day after their return.

The legal requirement to wear a mask in the UK is no longer in place, but lots of places and transport companies still want you to wear one when on their premises.

There is no longer a limit on how many people you can meet indoors or outside.

Social distancing rules are also gone for everyone except those self‐isolating after a positive test and in airports.

Nightclubs and bars, festivals, sports stadiums and concert halls, are also open.

People in the UK will also no longer be forced to work from home.

People will still have to self‐isolate if they show any symptoms of Covid, if they test positive or live with someone who has tested positive. If you test positive, you must self‐isolate for 10 days.

Assault on Murcia A MURCIA ambulance crew have been assaulted and threat‐ ened by a husband after they removed his wife’s veil to place a mask on her face. Three health workers manning an ambu‐ lance from the Alhama de Murcia have reported a local to the police for assault and threats, after he reportedly pushed and insulted them when they removed the veil from his wife’s face. The incident reportedly took place when the medics needed to place a mask on the pregnant woman’s face when they were going to transfer her by ambulance, be‐ cause her waters had broken, and she was going to give birth. Her 39‐year‐old husband allegedly tried to attack the Murcia ambulance crew, because he considered the removal of the veil to be a racist act and did not agree with two men travelling inside the ambulance with his wife.

His pregnant wife allegedly did not object to the removal of the veil, because, in addition to the face mask due to the pandemic, she had to put on other medical devices for deliv‐ ery care. The situation reportedly became so tense with the husband that the health workers notified the Local Police, be‐ cause they could not delay her transfer to the hospital any longer, reporting the man for assaulting them.

Danish-flagged ship confined A DANISH flagged merchant ship has been confined in the port of Alicante due to an outbreak of the poten‐ tially deadly coronavirus.

The ship arrived from Oran in Algeria flying a Dan‐ ish flag and had previously stopped over in Tenerife be‐

fore heading to the port of Alicante. Prior to this Ali‐ cante port had not been af‐ fected by an outbreak from shipping traffic.

The large merchant ship has been confined by For‐ eign Health in the port of Alicante after a coronavirus

outbreak was detected among 19 members of crew. According to sources from the Government Sub‐ delegation, one of the crew members has had to be ad‐ mitted to hospital due to the severity of their symp‐ toms.

Seven arrested by NCA SEVEN British fugitives have been arrested in Spain in the space of just three weeks as a result of joint operations be‐ tween the National Crime Agency and the National Po‐ lice.

The fugitives ‐ all men ‐ are wanted in the UK for various unrelated offences including supplying Class A and B drugs, supplying firearms, causing wounding with intent and con‐ spiracy to rob.

The flurry of arrests were ex‐ ecuted by the National Police with support from the NCA’s in‐ ternational liaison officer net‐ work, Interpol Manchester and UK police partners.

man wanted by Merseyside Po‐ lice was arrested in Estepona for allegedly supplying firearms and Class A and B drugs.

On July 12, a 26‐year old man wanted by Greater Manchester Police was arrested in Fuengiro‐ la in connection to affray with a machete.

The suspects remain in cus‐ tody awaiting extradition pro‐ ceedings.

The NCA’s international liai‐ son officers worked with Span‐ ish partners and the Crown Prosecution Service to execute the arrests ‐ some under pre‐ existing European Arrest War‐ rants, and some under new Trade and Cooperation Agree‐ ment warrants.

Dave Hucker Head of Euro‐ pean Operations at the NCA, said: “Seven arrests in just three weeks is the result of some very hard work by the Agency with our Spanish part‐ ners ‐ who have allocated criti‐ cal resources and operated quickly to secure these arrests.

Millions in seized tobacco PORTUGAL’S Guarda Nacional Republicana and Spain’s National Police, supported by Europol and the Spanish cus‐ toms authorities, have dismantled an organised crime group involved in excise fraud and the smuggling of tobac‐ co products.

Investigations on July 7 led to 82 location searches, 70 in Portugal and 12 in Spain, targeting private residences, warehouses, garages and vehicles; five arrests in Portugal and 12 in Spain; seizure of eight tons of tobacco and cigarettes worth €113,500 along with seven weapons, 24 vehicles and €216,000.

The criminal network was involved in the illegal import of large quantities of tobacco leaves and strips from Spain into Portugal. This raw material served the illegal produc‐ tion of both cigarettes and tobacco for roll‐your‐own‐ cigarettes distributed on the Portuguese black market.

In mid‐June, Spanish authorities discovered and disman‐ tled cutting and processing facilities. The tobacco pro‐ cessed there was shipped to Portugal, where it was stored in different warehouses before being further distributed.

Since the investigation was launched in May 2020, the Portuguese and the Spanish authorities have detained 23 individuals and seized about 1.8 million illicit cigarettes along with 11 tons of tobacco, with a total worth of about €3.2 million.

Moroccan migrants demand recognition MOROCCAN migrants who are still living on the streets of Ceuta are demanding recognition from the Spanish government.

France requires test UNVACCINATED Spanish trav‐ ellers entering France must now present a negative coronavirus test taken within 24 hours, as opposed to the current 72 hours.

Unvaccinated travellers en‐ tering France from Spain, Portu‐ gal, the Netherlands, Greece, and Cyprus are now required to present a negative coron‐ avirus test (PCR or antigen) taken a maximum of 24 hours before travelling. This new rule comes into effect after the re‐ bound in Covid cases world‐ wide and in France due to the Delta variant.

The reinforced control sys‐ tem will also apply to people ar‐ riving from the United King‐ dom, who must also produce a negative test carried out a maxi‐ mum of 24 hours in advance, compared to the current 48 hours which apply to British travellers entering France.

The period after which peo‐ ple who have received their sec‐ ond dose of the vaccine are al‐ lowed to enter France has been reduced from 14 to seven days, after which it is possible to en‐ ter the country without a detec‐ tion test (28 days in the case of the single‐dose Janssen vaccine or a single dose for who have had the virus).

The French Government has warned that it will be strength‐ ening all of its land, air, and maritime border controls to en‐ sure strict compliance with these new coronavirus mea‐ sures.

New EU fisheries regulation

NEW FUND: Will help improve safety conditions.

A NEW EU fisheries regulation has been welcomed by Spain. The Minister for Agriculture Luis Planas said it will help improve health and safety.

The new regulation allows for a fund of €1.12 billion to support the modernisation of Spain’s fishing fleet, including engine repairs in vessels under 24 metres in length, the first purchase of fishing vessels for young fishermen under 40 years of age, and compensation for temporary shutdowns and scrapping.

According to the minister, these measures are nec‐ essary in order to promote “generational change in the fishing sector” and to improve health and safety condi‐ tions at work.

The new fund will cover temporary shutdowns and support for investment on board vessels for reasons of energy efficiency or improved working and safety con‐ ditions, even if the individual gross tonnage of the ves‐ sel increases, as long as this does not lead to an in‐ crease in the country’s overall fishing capacity.

In addition, it will be possible to continue support‐ ing companies in their adaptation to new technologies and offer support for investments in energy efficiency and the economy.

Alegria is a Spanish Social‐ ist Workers’ Party (PSOE) politician who took over as Minister of Education and Vocational Training on July 12, 2021. She took over from Isabel Celaa.

Correos profits THE Correos Group has released the accounts for the first half of 2021, a period in which it has reported a consolidated profit of €1.8 million.

This figure clearly shows a positive upward trend in busi‐ ness after the complexities of the previous year, during which the pandemic accelerated the collapse of the use of the postcard, or letters, a service which normally accounts for 65 per cent of Correos’ revenues, with a recent drop of 560 million letters less than in 2019, although the company still posted an operating income growth of 20.6 per cent, compared to only a 1.6 per cent operating expense.

This is the result of the effort and strategy implemented to adapt the company’s business model to the new situa‐ tion, where it has adjusted production costs and increased revenues due to the new pricing policy.

Sadly, at this current mo‐ ment in time the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is hitting youngsters the hardest in Spain with around 90 per cent of new cases be‐ ing registered against those under 30 years old.

Alegria gave thanks to the educational community and the parents of students who have fought hard to ensure that education has carried on right throughout the pan‐ demic, even during the dark‐ est moments.

“It may seem simple, but if we look at other European countries, none has been able to do it like Spain. We have all learned during this time and we will apply the lessons learned during this school year,” said Alegria.

She also explained how vaccination has been autho‐ rised in Spain for children who are over the age of 12 years old. As was carried out last year, Spanish schools will see the use of masks and ventilation being key in pre‐ venting new infections.

Paying Tribute SPAIN paid tribute to coron‐ avirus victims in an event presided over by King Felipe VI, who was accompanied by Queen Letizia.

The commemorative event focused on paying trib‐ ute to health workers who have lost their lives during the ongoing pandemic.

This is the second com‐ memorative event to pay tribute to coronavirus vic‐ tims. The event took place on Thursday, July 15, at the Plaza de la Armeria of the Royal Palace.

During the tribute event the king was expected to present 120 Grand Cross of Civil Merit awards to health workers who have been claimed by the virus. The King planned to present four of these medals in public to relatives of the health work‐ ers and the rest later at the Palace.

Around 700 people at‐ tended the event including most of the state authorities.

Claim compensation in the purchase and sale of properties. Handing over a smaller property IN today’s article we are going to talk about whether it is pos‐ sible to claim, after the pur‐ chase of a property, when there is a surface difference. In other words, the surface re‐ flected in the contract, does not match with the actual sur‐ face.

Legal regulation The possible legal conse‐ quences, if the property hand‐ ed over has a larger or smaller size or surface; than the agreed, are foreseen in the Spanish Civil Code (Cc). Specifi‐ cally in articles 1469 and fol‐ lowing.

Thus, we can distinguish be‐ tween two assumptions.

1. Purchase and Sale in which the price is set by area or square metres According to article 1469 Cc. If the purchase and sale, it is done with indication of the sur‐ face, and at the rate of a price per square metre. Then, the vendor must deliver the area agreed in the contract. And if it is not possible, the buyer may

request a proportional dis‐ count. Or where appropriate, the termination of the con‐ tract, if the difference exceeds 10%.

If the surface is bigger, the excess could be claimed by the seller.

2. Sales by lump sum price.

When the sale is made for a lump sum, for example, a price per square metre is not set. In this case, there will be no right to an increase or decrease in the price, if the area or surface is different. That is, if a greater or lesser property is handed over. All this according to arti‐ cle 1471 Cc. It is what is known as an AS IS. That is, a property is bought and sold, not based on a specif‐ ic area, and a price per m2.

Therefore, it is bought what

A different case are the pur‐ chases of properties off‐plan.

In this case, if the developer gives us a smaller property at the end of the contract. We un‐ derstand that it could be claimed. Maybe not so much, based on these articles; as the property did not exist when signing the contract.

But base, on the contractual breach, as the developer is not delivering what was agreed.

Lockdown fines

MORE than one million fines handed out for breaches dur‐ ing the first State of Alarm which began in March 2020 are set to be annulled follow‐ ing a Constitutional Court rul‐ ing on Wednesday July 14.

People who already paid fines should be able to claim their money back.

Across Spain, approximately 1.15 million people received fines ranging from €601 to €30,000 for breaching lock‐ down restrictions. The vast majority of these fines were handed out to people living in Andalucia and Madrid.

While the court’s full ruling has yet to be published, Span‐ ish media outlets are also sug‐ gesting that businesses that made claims against the gov‐ ernment for losses incurred during the lockdown may be able to see their cases pro‐ ceed. However, fresh claims introduced after the court’s ruling on July 14 will not be en‐ tertained.

Introduced in March 2020, the State of Alarm allowed the

Gambling fraud NATIONAL POLICE officers, in ‘Operation Monaco’, have carried out an investigation against an alleged criminal group dedicated to manipulating electronic roulettes in gambling halls in Granada, and investigators estimate that in one night, the gang would have illegally earned €56.500.

Three of the alleged members of this organisation were already arrested a few months ago in Madrid, charged with operating scams in up to 19 establishments, where they would have swindled around €60,000.

Currently one of those investigated for the events is in prison in Madrid, while three other identified, two men and a woman are unaccounted for, with investigators continuing the search for their location, an arduous task since they are known to often abandon the national territory, and when they are in Spain, they change their address regularly.

This recent investigation was launched after a complaint from the owner of a gambling establishment in the centre of Granada, and during their investigation they discovered the modus operandi used was a radio frequency identification card that could alter the normal operation of two roulette-type gaming machines, causing them a financial loss of €56,500.

First Covid lung transplant THE Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona has carried out the first lung transplant in the country to a patient who had contracted Covid-19 and to whom the coronavirus inflammation had caused irreversible damage to these organs.

The 51-year-old man with no previous pathologies was infected at the end of January and admitted to the ICU for 127 days, 122 of them connected to an extracorporeal oxygenation device (ECMO), a machine that performs the functions of the lungs.

After four months his lungs did not respond and the Bellvitge Hospital, where he was admitted, requested an assessment from the Vall d’Hebron Lung Transplantation Committee.

Should you transfer UK pensions overseas?

The pros and cons of QROPS One of the many UK pension options for British expatriates today is transferring to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). They can provide many benefits, but QROPS are by no means a one-size-fits-all solution.

QROPS is a label for foreign pension schemes that meet HM Revenue & Customs rules to receive transfers from UK-registered pension funds.

They enable British expatriates to simplify their affairs by taking their pensions with them. Schemes only make the HMRC list if they meet similar conditions to UK pensions.

Tax implications Currently, EU residents can transfer UK pensions into an EU/EEAbased QROPS tax-free. However, transferring to a QROPS outside the bloc will trigger a 25% UK ‘overseas transfer charge’.

The UK 2021 budget did not include any changes here, so transfers to EU/EEA-based QROPS currently remain tax-free for EU residents. But now the UK has left the bloc, this

Worker loses eye A HEALTH worker has lost an eye after being brutally at‐ tacked on a Madrid Metro train for telling a passenger to wear a face mask.

Police in Madrid are looking for a man accused of the as‐ sault. Video footage of Thurs‐ day July 15’s incident, that oc‐ curred at the Alto del Arenal station on Line 1 of the Madrid Metro, has since gone viral on social networks, and police are hoping that somebody will recognise the aggressor.

The man allegedly attacked the health worker with a sharp object, which went into his eye, and even though he was transferred to the 12 de Octubre Hospital, they were unable to save his eye.

In the video, the aggressor, wearing a pink baseball cap and a backpack is seen picking something up and leaves the carriage as the train pulls into the station. He shouts at the man, “Let it be clear to you, I hope you die, asshole.” The National Police have asked the public to contact them if they know who the man is.

Arrested on Camino de Santiago A FUGITIVE wanted in connection with three murders in Brazil was arrested while doing the Camino de Santiago.

His arrest occurred on July 15, when officers from the National Police - through their control of the hostels in the area detected the presence of a 53-year-old Spanish citizen, of Argentinian origin who was doing the famous treks of the Camino de Santiago.

The officers were able to verify that the man was listed with a ‘red notification’ from Interpol, standing accused of committing a triple homicide in Rio de Janeiro some years previously.

After his arrest, his full identity was subsequently confirmed, and he appeared before a judge in Palencia.

SPANISH cruise company Pull‐ mantur has made a request to the courts to open the liquidation process, in order to carry out an inventory of the company’s assets to allow potential investors to in‐ ject the necessary capital needed, or to sell it.

This move has been long‐ex‐ pected, as the pandemic has hit the cruise sector badly, with no re‐ al date set in stone for the resump‐ tion of activities. In a statement from the bankruptcy administrator of the shipping company, it said: “Pullmantur continues negotiating with two or three investors.”

While Pullmantur commented, “Unfortunately, the prolongation of the State of Alarm and its suc‐ cessive extensions, together with the restrictions in the cruise opera‐ tion, made Pullmantur, like the rest of its competitors, have to postpone again its plans to restart activities, due to the restrictions in Spain to contain the Covid‐19, dis‐ rupting all its work plans.”

If an investor can be found then the company can restart, and rein‐ state the workforce, but in the ab‐ sence of any investor then the company would end up closing.

Spanish citizenship for Senegalese heroes SAMUEL LUIZ: Died after a vicious attack by numerous young people.

THE Spanish government are set to grant nationality to the two Senegalese men who risked their own well‐being to try to pro‐ tect Samuel Luiz during a vicious attack which took place in La Coruña.

Samuel was tragically beaten to death by multiple young peo‐ ple in what is considered by many people to be a homophobic attack.

The Secretary of State for Migration has confirmed that the Spanish government will grant Spanish nationality to these two brave men. Samuel’s friends have been among those to request this happen. The two men have been welcomed by Samuel’s friends into their group and are treated as one of their own.

The Spanish government has the legal authority to legalise people’s irregular situations in Spain on a discretionary basis.

This can occur when people show exceptional solidarity and thereby prove themselves to be worthy of being citizens.

The government believes that this describes perfectly the two young Senegalese men who tried to save the life of Samuel. One of them even threw his own body over Samuel’s to protect him during the attack. The other man helped Samuel’s friends.

Car rental fraud arrest Aid to

M A L AG A National Police have taken down a criminal organisation based in Mala‐ ga, Madrid, Murcia and Ali‐ cante, which was dedicated to defrauding vehicle rental companies.

Twelve members of the or‐ ganisation have been arrest‐ ed for the alleged crimes of money laundering, fraud and belonging to a criminal or‐ ganisation. The main ‘leader’ of the organisation has also been arrested for the alleged crime of the illegal posses‐ sion of weapons.

Officers carried out search‐ es in which they discovered jewels and high‐end jew‐ ellery valued at over €1 mil‐ lion, a revolver with six car‐ tridges, €150,000 and various documents, according to a statement from the National Police.

The investigations began when Malaga Local Police in‐ tervened a vehicle in which the occupants were carrying €99,940 and could not prove the origin of the money. Dur‐ ing investigations into its ori‐ gin, officers noticed the exis‐

tence of other vehicles from rental companies and detect‐ ed the group were involved in some type of scam.

Officers found that the or‐ ganisation had rented vehi‐ cles fraudulently and sublet‐ ted those vehicles to other criminal organisations. False identities were used be‐ tween the person renting the car and the end user of the vehicle.

This made the identities of the members of the organisa‐ tion more difficult to identi‐ fy.

Twitter ban over ‘gory videos’ TWITTER has blocked the account of bullfighter José Antonio Morante de la Puebla for posting several videos of the bullfight he took part in on Saturday, July 17, in Algeciras, after the platform apparently considering that it promoted ‘sadistic pleasure.’

The bullfighter immediately condemned the action by Twitter once the

account had been blocked with a message stating that ‘freedom does not exist in this country. Enough already.’

BBK Festival confirms 2022 line up IN what is set to be a stunning event, a series of ‘retro’ artists and bands have been lined up to appear at the Bilbao BBK Festival in Spain. This will be one of the biggest events for music lovers in 2022 and tickets are set to go on sale soon.

The line‐up will include Placebo, The Killers and Supergrass and Pet Shop Boys, and other artists will be announced closer to the time. Sadly, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the event in 2020 and 2021 was cancelled.

The main performers have already been announced nearly a year in advance to get fans excited and start selling tickets. This is something that happens with most major concerts.

The 2022 event will take place in the Basque Country and will run from Thursday, July 7 until Saturday, July 9. This will give event goers three days of back‐to‐back music and the event will even have a camping ground so everyone can make the most of the concerts.

Zurich Malaga Marathon 2021 announced THE Zurich Malaga Marathon 2021 has been confirmed as be‐ ing held on December 12 after it was cancelled in 2020.

Registrations are now open for this event, and also for the half marathon, after last year’s race had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

Almost 3,000 participants are taking part, who had booked up previously for the 2020 event, and have kept their names in for the 2021 race.

MADRID is set to return around 200,000 doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine as they do not have the target population to ad‐ minister it to.

At the moment in Spain the AstraZeneca vaccine can be adminis‐ tered to those over 60 years old, or to essential personnel. The Com‐ munity of Madrid have a surplus of around 200,000 doses of the As‐ traZeneca vaccine, but they do not have anyone left that meets the requirements. This means that they will return it to the Ministry of Health, where it can be handed out to other areas in Spain.

Enrique Ruiz Escudero, the Regional Minister of Health, has criti‐ cised the Ministry of Health for the fact that they have too many vials of the vaccine that they cannot use and not enough doses of other vaccines. He commented that they are lacking in doses of Pfizer, Janssen and Moderna, and he considers that this “is compromising the vaccination horizon” in Madrid.

The Community of Madrid is thought to have in reserve around one million doses of the various vaccines which will be given out as second doses to those people who have already received their first vaccination.

She said goodbye to her mother‐in‐law Pilar Bar‐ dem in an emotional letter on social media. Penelope spoke kindly and showed her admiration of Pilar.

Penelope is an Oscar‐win‐ ning actress and is married to Javier Bardem.

Along with the message Penelope shared a photo of the two actresses to‐ gether during the 1997 film Carne tremula. This was directed by Pedro Almodovar and the pair along with Javier all got to work together, as report‐ ed the Spanish press.

Criminals posed as officers THE Guardia Civil have arrested nine people and are investigat‐ ing another six in Madrid and the province of Toledo, for crimes against property that they committed with great vio‐ lence, whilst also posing as members of the security forces.

It is reported by the Guardia Civil that the leader of this crimi‐ nal gang ‐ ‘Goyito’ ‐ has been ar‐ rested on 20 previous occasions, having committed more than 200 crimes, and those arrested are also reportedly related to an attempted murder in Navalcan,

4,000 ignored curfew THE first night of the new curfew rules in Catalonia Province saw Barcelona police having to remove 4,357 people who had taken to the city’s streets and beaches, who were not respecting the new curfew. This new action was brought in after the Generalitat de Catalonia made a request to the Catalonia High Court of Justice, asking for the 161 municipalities almost 80 per cent of Catalonia - in the province with the highest rates of infection to once again have a curfew imposed between the hours of 1am and 6am, in an effort to combat the spread of the virus in the province, especially among young people.

Barcelona’s Guardia Urbana police force reportedly highlighted the ‘normality’ and ‘absence’ of incidents involved during the evictions on the first night of lockdown in the capital of Catalonia, saying that there had been no noticeable increase seen in the number of private parties or concentrations taking place in the streets. Most of the 4,357 evicted people were reportedly found on the streets and squares of the city centre, and in the Ciutat Vella district of the city, as well as on the beaches, where there were many tourists.

Avoid the sun after vaccine

SUNBATHING: It is advisable not to be exposed to the sun during the hottest hours.

IT is being recommended not to sunbathe in the middle of the day after being vaccinated.

In the recommendations of the Ministry of Health for vaccination, there is no mention of the prohibition of sunbathing after being vacci‐ nated, in fact, it is advisable to choose outdoor activities to avoid infections.

However, the SUMMA coordinator at the Wizink Vaccination Centre, Raquel Jimenez, rec‐ ommended not to expose yourself to the sun.

“It is not advisable to be exposed to the sun during the hottest hours,” said the expert, al‐ though the manufacturers of the vaccines do not specifically mention anything about it.

“Before vaccination, there are no contraindi‐ cations, a normal life should be carried out and afterwards, one must wait about eight hours to ensure that there are no side effects before making efforts and being able to start a normal life,” she added.

The recommendation comes from the side ef‐ fects that the vaccine can produce hours after re‐ ceiving the injection, fever being one of these most common symptoms. Likewise, having a headache is another of the most repeated symp‐ toms of the Covid vaccine, a pain that can also be caused or increased due to long sun expo‐ sure.

Gran Vía metro open AFTER three years of construction, Madrid’s Gran Vía metro station is finally open again to the public.

The newly inaugurated pavilion-style entrance at Madrid’s freshly renovated Gran Vía Metro station stands like a gateway welcoming people to the Spanish capital.

The construction is a replica of the former entrance, built in 1917 by architect Antonio Palacios, and it is faithful to the original design. According to members of the public present at the inauguration, the granite used for the structure is so clean and blemish-free that it almost looks unreal.

The new image of the station is further enhanced by four new lifts, 13 escalators, voice-recognition functions at ticketvending machines, and a museum space exhibiting the many treasures that were discovered during the renovation work.

COMPANY GSK has created the National Institute for Severe Asthma (INAG) to improve the quality of life for asthmatic people.

In Spain, the prevalence of asthma is 5.5 per cent of the population and of these, 7.7 per cent suffer from a severe form.

Among its objectives are to improve the training of specialists, unify the criteria for diagnosis and treatment, make visible in the population the limitations that these patients have and, above all, improve patient access to Asthma Units.

Luis Perez de Llano, head of the Pneumology Service at Lucus Augusti University Hospital in Lugo (HULA) highlighted the work of the Asthma Units.

He said: “They have turned out to be very costeffective because they allow bringing the experts together and the necessary technology.”

How wall lizards The great Spanish omelette debate World’s first organic thrived in Spain caviar is produced in A NEW study may have uncovered why wall lizards have become the most successful reptile in the Mediterranean region.

The results reveal how drastic changes in sea levels and climate six million years ago affected species formation in the area. The researchers believe they can now explain why the lizards became so diverse and widespread, something that has puzzled biologists since the 19th century.

The evolution of wall lizards offers clues on how major events in the Mediterranean climate and geology millions of years ago affected how species formed or became extinct, and paved the way for biodiversity.

Wall lizards date back around 20 million years. However, species formation seems to have picked up speed shortly after the Messinian Salinity Crisis six million years ago. During this period the Mediterranean almost dried out, only to rapidly fill up with water again as the Strait of Gibraltar opened.

The research indicates that species isolated from each other for millions of years occasionally have found each other and shared genes. By comparing DNA sequences from 26 species and eight subspecies, the team successfully mapped the major features of the evolution of wall lizards.

Sailboat attacked by killer whales A SAILBOAT has been attacked by a group of killer whales in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Salvamento Maritimo set out on a rescue mission to help a sailboat that had been attacked by a pod of killer whales in the early hours of July 15.

According to reports the boat was a recreational sailing boat which had two people on board. They called for help at 3.50am. The sea conditions were also bad and they were being hit by two metre waves. The crew members were able to confirm that they had followed protocol which included lowering the sails and turning off the engine.

THE world’s first-ever organic caviar is being produced by Caviar Riofrio in the Granada municipality of Loja.

Caviar Riofrio is a company that was founded back in 1963 by the Navarrese doctor, Luis Domezain, located in the town of Loja, and originally built as a trout farm.

The doctor soon incorporated sturgeon to the farm, but a tragic flood in September 2018 covered one of the fish farms in mud, and in just a few minutes more than 11,000 sturgeons died.

This was when Carlos Cadenas and his partner Antonio Romero got involved, buying the farm in 2019, with the objective of returning it to its former glory but sadly Antonio passed away in 2020 - rebuilding the business.

Loja is at a similar latitude south of the Caspian Sea as Iran, and, as in Iran, the waters originate in mountains that are over 3,000 metres high, are free of pesticides, and maintain a constant temperature of between 14ºC and 15ºC, and with an investment of over €2 million, Carlos Cadenas has rebuilt the fish farm while still respecting the natural environment.

He currently has more than 100,000 sturgeon specimens at the farm, consisting of the three most famous varieties of the fish, all under the careful supervision of four biologists, three from Russia, and one Spanish.

Police indicted for kicking in door of Madrid flat

A J U D G E has indicted 12 National Police officers for allegedly entering a Madrid apartment during the State of Alarm due to the coronavirus without the consent of its occupants or a court order in an

action known as ‘kick in the door’.

T he judge in of M adrid has been investigating the complaint of the occupants of the apartment for some events that occurred at dawn on December 9,

2020. The events took place when the officers went to the apartment, located at number 14 C alle Pan y Toros in the Madrid district of Villaverde.

Police arrest alleged jihadist from France in Vitoria OFFICERS in Vitoria have arrested an alleged jihadist from France.

Ertzaintza officers in Vitoria entered a guest house in search of a previous tenant. According to internal police sources, they were in search of a Maghrebi citizen who is on the European list of

suspected jihadists. “In addition, he was suspected of carrying weapons,” according to media sources.

An alert was triggered when hotel data was uploaded and police cross referenced the details of a Tunisian passport and found him to be an alleged jihadist on the European suspects list.

The suspect went straight to his room and by 5am the next day, officers of the Ertzaintza had surrounded the guest house.

After 6am, a patrol of plainclothes officers entered the establishment and waited in the room next to the suspect for him to leave his room.

When the alleged jihadist got up shortly after 7am, he went out into the hallway and was met with two officers: “And almost immediately with six or eight others who came in after him. He didn’t even move,” said a source from the establishment in Vitoria.

Prison for 3 murder suspects

A JUDGE in Spain has confirmed the imprisonment of three people accused of killing a man in what has been described as a homophobic assault.

The court number 8 of La Coruña has confirmed the three people accused of the killing will be placed in prison until their trial.

The three stand accused of murdering Samuel Luiz in northern Spain. As reported by the Superior Court of Xustiza de Galicia, the three men appeared separately and, when asked by the judge if they had any further comments, two did not add anything to their previous statements.

UNICEF vaccine aid THE Ministry of Equality, Social Policies and Conciliation, through the Andalucian Agency for Development Cooperation (AACID) has launched various actions to ensure universal and equal access to the Covid vaccine in poorer countries.

Equality will allocate €580,000 in collaboration with UNICEF and the Andalucian School of Public Health to facilitate vaccination processes in Africa and Latin America, which will allow, among other things, the acquisition of 400,000 doses to immunise the population in Mali.

“The inequality in access to vaccines not only appeals to ethical criteria,” states the Minister of Equality, Rocio Ruiz, alluding to the possible appearance of new variants in case of not containing the infection in a global way. Globally, officials plan to distribute 1.3 billion vaccines to low and lower-middle-income countries and humanitarian crisis areas.

Divers recover body

JOSE MARIA BELLIDO, the mayor of Cordoba, took the personal task of announcing on Monday July 19, that police divers had recovered the body of the missing 21-year-old man who had disappeared on Sunday afternoon, July 18 while swimming with his friends at what locals know as the Blue Lake in Cordoba.

His death has been confirmed as drowning, and this tragic news came as teams of

They also sent condolences from the whole of Cordoba Town Hall to the family and friends of the deceased youth.

Repsol and Talgo join forces REPSOL and Talgo have both confirmed the signing of an agreement on July 19, from which they plan to jointly develop projects to promote the creation of renewable hydrogen trains, thus promoting emission-free rail transport in the Iberian Peninsula.

This agreement was signed at the Talgo plant that the train manufacturer has in Las Rozas district of Madrid, where the executive director of Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy of Repsol, Juan Abascal, and the president of Talgo, participated in the sign-

ing, at the Oriol Palace. Also present was the president of Petronor, Emiliano Lopez Atxurra.

Through this alliance, the two companies will provide a comprehensive solution to make the renewable hydrogen train a reality, with Talgo in charge of the design, manufacture, and start-up of the new self-propelled medium-distance and commuter trains, while Repsol will provide its renewable hydrogen generation infrastructure, and the logistics that the company has, to supply the railway network.

Valencian surfer

TRAGICALLY the young Valencian surfer Oscar Serra has died according to media reports in Mexico. He had been surfing in Puerto Escondido, when he was suddently caught out by a large wave that took his life. He had been in the area to enjoy the famous and dangerous waves.

Sadly though his plan ended in tragedy.

According to witness reports he entered the water when the beach had a red flag. This is considered to be common amongst experienced surfers who want

to get the best waves at this beach. The Valencian surfer was considered among the best. Oscar is said to have fallen from the top of the wave and was rescued by lifeguards who managed to bring him to shore. Sadly though they were not able to revive him. Experts from the Regional Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office rapidly cordoned off the area to allow the body to be removed from the beach, and allow the Spanish embassy in Mexico to be informed of the death.

‘Hand luggage’ Melilla WHILST the unemployment situ‐ ation in Spain appears to be get‐ ting better, Spanish enclaves in Morocco are finding their economies are getting worse.

For many years Ceuta and Melilla had relatively thriving economies due to the fact that they benefited from what is known as ‘atypical commerce’ whereby goods were shipped in from around the world.

They were then taken to the borders with Morocco where mainly women, who had access to cross the border, were paid to take large packages as ‘hand lug‐ gage’ into Morocco, avoiding im‐ port duties.

From 2018, Morocco started to make it more difficult for this to happen and come the outbreak of the pandemic, bor‐ ders were closed, meaning that a huge flow of income disap‐ peared from both Ceuta and Melilla and this continues to

Each of the enclaves houses around 85,000 residents and it is reported by the World Politics Review that although about half of those employed work for the Spanish Government, adult un‐ employment is now around 30 per cent in Ceuta and 20 per cent in Melilla.

The local economies used to thrive on import taxes (much lower than Morocco or Spain) on goods which soon found their way across the borders but this source of income has now disappeared.

The way forward seems to be either rapprochement between Morocco and Spain (which cur‐ rently seems unlikely) or the possible incorporation of the two enclaves into the EU cus‐ toms zone which would be likely to generate options for income.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL, I hope the woke wallies that encouraged the introduction of an act of such provocative propaganda into our national sport are pleased with themselves.

The taking of the knee, in support of a Marxist, anti‐white (and in fact anti male) organisation has ‐ as I was scoffed at for prophesying months ago ‐ now created more racism in the UK than ever could have been previously envisaged.

Instead of a few low lifes making derogatory noises from the terraces, or the occasional banana being thrown on the pitch, there are now thousands of spectators voicing their displeasure of this act of blatant racial confrontation at the start of every match. And now it is announced that some of our mislead athletes will be continuing this practice of ‘gesture politics’ at the Tokyo games!

This decision is in direct violation of the Olympic charter that states and I quote: ‘No kind of demonstration, political, religious or racist propaganda is permitted on any

irony? For all our sakes get off your knees and get on with these sporting events in the true unbiased and multicultural spirit they were originally intended. After all it’s not as though black and minority figures are underrepresented in these events.

In fact many categories are positively dominated by ethnic athletes.

These continuing accusations of white privilege are a positive disgrace and completely non‐ productive to anyone truly wishing to

solve the problems. Personally I think the words of the great actor Morgan Freeman were probably one of the most intelligent pieces of advice I’ve heard, when he announced in the media that the best way to end racism was to stop talking about it!

The BLM movement is a far left Marxist organisation which, under the guise of seeking racial equality, is intent on causing as much disruption and resentment as it is allowed to get away with. Time it was exposed for what its intentions truly are (which is actually black female domination!)

Well, good luck with that.

I believe the British government has finally capitulated to Covid. It’s now every man, woman and child for themselves. And good luck with that as well!

AFTER decades of doing everything possible to keep reported UFO sightings secret, the Pen‐ tagon has changed tack. According to a recently‐ released report, it has no explanation for dozens of unidentified flying objects seen by US military pilots.

All the cynics amongst you may well point to the fact that aliens only seem interested in places where western powers are known to test new technologies (places like southern California, Vir‐ ginia Beach etc) and to let them know just when the little green folk show some interest in Syria or Sri Lanka. And that maybe there is another expla‐ nation for UFO videos released by military forces: the need to convince us of the ongoing existence of threats, real and imaginary, to maximise their funding.

Admittedly, we’ve been told by our own gov‐ ernment there’s been no substantiated evidence of Unidentified Flying Objects over the past half

ALIENS: Are not just confined to British politics. century. But heck, that’s the UK Government ‐ it wouldn’t LIE to us, would it?

Unidentified means unidentified, not alien but alien could be applied to some UK politicians. And let’s face it: there are some very strange people in

politics. And even more who claim that the lack of UFO sightings over the years is simply because aliens have all now been assimilated into the vari‐ ous political parties.

But these aliens aren’t confined to British poli‐

tics. Consider former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the number of times she ‘mis‐spoke’ about being in places where she clearly wasn’t.

Under sniper fire in Bosnia. Under bomb fire in Belfast. It always sounded so thrilling ‐ like some‐ thing out of a Dan Brown novel. Problem was, it did come out of a Dan Brown novel. Fiction that’s totally out of this world.

Then there’s Donald Trump still refusing to ac‐ cept the election result...

Yes, politicians are strange. Alien‐like. And with us. And, unlike the Pentagon, we’ve got the PROOF...

And a final thought: in space, nobody’ll hear Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk etc in their rockets. So can Dominic Cummings go too (plus any others you’d like to add?)

GIVE UP SMOKING NOW! Dear Editor Should we be baffled to see a letter from a reader that has been allowed to rant for a second time on the same subject (Smoking Beach Goers)?

In my life experience there is no bigger fool than a selfrighteous one. BW firstly tells us how they discard their cigarette butts responsibly, out of regard for the environment.

This is in a plastic water bottle or drink can. If such items with sand and cigarette butts inside are recycled, they will spoil the entire batch. If cans and bottles are not being recycled and BW cares for the environment, is this not a contradiction?

BW also complains about signs stating ‘the bleeding obvious’ and yet praises such signs in Portugal advising against ‘using the beach as an ashtray’. The signs about Covid-19 in Spain are reminder signs, not information signs. Public information campaigns correctly ensure people are later reminded. This may appear repetitive, but is essential.

Perhaps there is one message in the Covid-19 public health information campaign that BW missed, which is that during pandemics of a virus that targets the lungs, is a good time to give up smoking.

An observation from flights coming in from the UK today to Malaga airport. As Spain suffers from a Covid induced lack of tourism, one would think that any tourists braving the restrictions to come to Spain and pay for the expensive tests would be more than welcome? Not so. Malaga airport border control was utter chaos. Queues of over an hour to get through the border, guards clocking off and leaving posts unmanned. Tourist tempers flaring and nobody from authority to help out.

Quotes from more than a few in the queue said they would never come back to Spain after their experience.

If Spain wants tourists, then start acting like a welcoming brand. Remember, there is, and will be, lots of competition for tourists.

Recently my husband and I needed help in an emergency. Our beautiful young daughter-in-law had died from Cancer leaving behind her distraught husband, our son, and our granddaughters aged six and four. We needed to go to England at short notice for the funeral and did not have time to make our usual arrangements with house/dog sitters, so we asked around, our friends and on many Facebook groups whether anyone could look after our dogs at reasonable cost. There were two issues, we don’t like leaving the dogs at kennels and also we had to pay hundreds of pounds for Covid tests, so cost was an issue. The response was, yes so and so can at €10 per dog, so that would have been 16 days x two dogs €320. One family with whom we have an arrangement to help each other for the odd day would have done but were away at the time, and one neighbour nearby whom we felt could have helped, said “no”. However, one wonderful person who belongs to a club my husband is part of, phoned up to say that she was happy to come to the house and dog-sit for us and did not wish to be paid. Also another friend did the airport runs for us, one of which was for a late night flight.

They know who they are, we are touched and most grateful.

We all want to get back to some form of normality but everyone needs to remember that the disease is still there and caution should continue to be the watchword.

I live on the Costa del Sol and if one didn’t read the news, watch it on TV or look at the internet you wouldn’t know there was anything different going on except there are people walking about in masks. The beaches and restaurants are full. Obviously lots of businesses haven’t made it but there is still ‘normal’ life going on.

The UK government has introduced an ‘amber plus’ now to make sure they ruin as many peoples’ holidays as possible. When BoJo and Sunak were told to isolate suddenly they’re part of a new experiment and won’t be treated the same as the plebs.

Two hours later they did a complete Uturn. Do they really think the public are going to stand for this nonsense? Over 300,000 people were at Silverstone this weekend and were not really subject to any stringent

checks that they are complying with the entry rules. This was confirmed by the boss of Silverstone in all the press and news programmes. If the organisers believe everyone is being totally honest then I’ve got some bridges and palaces in London I’d like to sell them.

So they are trying to nick the whistle blower who released the CCTV footage of Hancock’s hallway grope. Actually they should give that person a reward, maybe a knighthood, for doing the right thing and exposing the lying, cheating, smiling assassin scumbag to the public for what he really is.

Just got a message that 34 passwords stored on my phone have been compromised and I need to change them. I looked at the offending apps and I have to tell you I can’t remember 90 per cent of them so it’s going to be a fun time changing them. My phone also told me today that I’m listening to my music too loud and promptly turned it down for me! I’m now arguing with my phone about how loud I can have my music.

A note to all the app makers - please change the way I have to enter my date of birth. Just let me type it in - it’s really distressing to scroll all the way down to 1949 from 2021. It’s like my whole life flashing past me!!

The most frequent underlying disorders en‐ countered in SCD are hypertrophic cardiomyopa‐ thy and coronary artery disease (CAD), repre‐ senting three quarters of all conditions. The risk related to CAD increases with ageing (>35 years old), while that attributable to cardiomyopathies or fatal arrhythmias is especially frequent among young people (<35 years old). Alterations in car‐ diac function influence the physical examination, the electrocardiogram and the echocardiogram.

While much recent debate has focused on the efficacy of screening with electrocardiography, a number of sporting bodies also mandate the in‐ clusion of exercise testing and echocardiography in screening protocols. SUNBATHERS are increasing the risk of skin cancer by failing to apply the right amount of sunscreen to the body, according to new research.

On average, people are using less than half the tanning lotion than is advised by the manufacturers because they apply such a thin layer.

A new study conducted by scientists at Kings College London recommend using a safer method to ensure sufficient protection called the ‘teaspoon method.’

Anthony Young, a professor of Photobiology from the university, split 16 volunteers into two groups of eight.

The first group were exposed to ultraviolet radiation to simulate sunlight over one day, while wearing sunscreen of varying thickness.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

Keeping your dogs healthy EMMA WALLSWORTH AS a fellow dog owner, carer and trainer, dogs can definitely fill a hole in one’s life.

Many years ago, I managed a dog and cat re‐ homing centre abroad which was a real roller‐coaster of an experience.

Many of the dogs that came into the cen‐ tre needed fast treatment. I have worked closely with some fantastic vets and learned so much, of how to quickly boost immune systems and get these animals, sometimes, literally back on their feet, well paws. I am lucky enough now to have worked with an ar‐ ray of different animal over the years.

One of the most common problems we dealt with was the state of dog’s paws, so just to help anyone who moves to a hot country, please don’t walk your dogs in hot weather as hot weather can cause roads to melt and dogs to burn their paws on asphalt, tarmac and artificial grass. The best time in hot cli‐ mates to walk your dogs are first thing in the morning or early evening.

One way of keeping your dog naturally healthy through the hot summer is to add a

HEALTHY DOGS: Don’t walk in the heat. little apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water and food. I personally add a drop of ACV to our dog’s water and a drizzle of olive to his food which keeps the dog’s skin and coat in a nice silky condition.

Apple Cider Vinegar: recommended dose start with half a tsp and build to one tea‐ spoon for small dogs and start with one tsp and build up to one tablespoon for medium and large dogs. Should you feed your dogs canned green tripe add to their meal a little ACV, which can hide the smell.

If you plan to add apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water or food, start with a small amount (a capful) and gradually increase the amount until you reach the recommendation shared above.

(ACV = Apple cider vinegar) Apple cider vinegar can also help: • improving digestion • combatting yeast infections • relieving allergy symptoms • supporting joint health • clearing up tear stains • reduce the chance of ear infections.

To keep ear infections at bay, it is impor‐ tant to keep our dogs’ ears cleaned. It’s said that ‘The rule is to clean your pet’s ears when they’re dirty.’ To make a wash you use equal parts of ACV to warm water. If your dog is not feeling itself or is in pain, they can display dis‐ comfort with constant washing of their paws.

Some dogs are wheat intolerant, here is an easy wheat free recipe for your dog: Treats recipe: 1) 1 cup of gram flour 2) cup of rice flour 3) cup of maise flour 4) 1 finely grated carrot

5) 1 finely grated apple 6) 250g finely grated sweet potato 7) 1 tbsp of organic coconut oil 8) 1 free range egg 9) 1 tbsp of organic olive oil Method: Mix all together in a bowl, roll out and cut into one‐inch strips by five‐inch lengths, place on a baking tray with a baking sheet. Pre‐set oven to 160 degrees C and bake for around 20‐30 minutes, turning two or three times. Remove from the oven, allow to cool.

Why does your cat not like water?

WATER has long been the neme‐ sis of most felines, in spite what those cat surfing videos on YouTube may suggest. So are

there any cats that actually like water? Is it possible to get your kitty to stop scarping every time you turn the tap on?

It is thought that cats self‐do‐ mesticated in the Middle East around 10,000 years ago. This of‐ fers a big clue as to why they are so averse to water ‐ it’s in their DNA. If their ancestors evolved in an arid desert, this means they would have had little experience swimming or being submerged underwater.

Unlike dogs, cats are also not built physically to appreciate get‐ ting wet. While dogs’ coats repel water, cats’ fur absorbs it which then causes their body tempera‐ ture to drop ‐ and cats hate being cold almost as much as they hate being wet.

Some of domestic cats’ more distant relatives, however, actu‐ ally enjoy taking a dip. Tigers, for example, are known to cool off in the water and even take a swim if the circumstances call for it.

It is possible to get your cat used to water by slowly introduc‐ ing him to the feel of it, but this is usually most effective when he is a kitten.

by Mark Slack MG was an iconic British car, but in terms of new models is now an iconic British badge.

Taken from the ashes of the Rover Group the Chinese car maker SAIC owns MG and produces a small range of cars and SUVs in petrol, hybrid and all‐electric. The main models are SUVs but one of the newest is the MG5.

It’s an all‐electric affair and an estate, which will surprise many as SUVs con‐ tinue to find favour with a majority of buyers. With an

MG5 EV, a great package affordable starting price of just €29,371 (£25,095), after the UK government grant, it offers lots of space, excel‐ lent equipment levels and a very good claimed range. It’s not the cheapest EV out there, but in terms of space and equipment it offers a great package.

It’s a fairly basic design in terms of looks but

because it’s fairly straight‐ forward it has a very decent load area.

Passenger space is also generous and there’s good seat adjustment so everyone should find a comfortable driving position.

Standard fare includes navigation, cruise control, rear parking camera, keyless

start, air conditioning, auto‐ matic lights and an eight‐ inch touchscreen. The higher trim level, there are just two, adds keyless entry, au‐ tomatic wipers, heated seats, power mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror and faux leather seating.

Power comes from a 52 kwh battery to provide a 214 mile range, or in pure city

driving 276 miles. Energy re‐ generation is better in the urban environment because of the stop/start nature of the driving.

If you can find a 50 kw charger then your volts can charge up to 80 per cent in 50 minutes. In reality our public charging network isn’t great and even if you find a fast charger there are so many factors, you might find it doesn’t charge at full rate.

That said the MG charged commendably quickly during my tenure and provided enough volts to make it use‐

able without range anxiety.

As ever a home charger is a must to make EV life practi‐ cal.

On the road the MG5 isn’t a speed machine, as with all electric cars it has good pace, and the ride can get a little choppy on rougher sur‐ faces.

That said it’s a comfort‐ able drive and an immensely practical, well equipped and rather likeable family and business holdall. If you’re looking to move to an EV on a budget then the MG5 could be the perfect start.

Volkswagen batteries USING Google maps and electric cars

V O L K S W AG E N has an‐ nounced that it wants to make Spain a strategic pillar for its electrification project by installing the third of its gigafactories in the country, where batteries would be produced for all the group's brands, while also manufac‐ turing its electric utility vehi‐ cles from 2025, however, this move is dependent on state subsidies, the consortium is reported as saying.

The car manufacturing gi‐ ant has presented its New Auto strategy for 2030, a plan in which software de‐ velopment plays a funda‐ mental role, because it is based on building safer, smarter and when the time

comes, autonomous cars.

It is not the only priority that Volkswagen has, be‐ cause by 2030 the industrial group intends that its carbon footprint will have been re‐ duced by 30 per cent, com‐ pared to 2018, and on the horizon is the objective that individual mobility, based on cars, will represent 85 per cent of the market and its business by around 2030.

The German consortium has reportedly allocated a €73,000 million fund for in‐ vestment in new technolo‐ gies between 2021 and 2025, which represents 50 per cent of its total projected invest‐ ments, while electrification and digitisation will gain

weight, so that by being more efficient, a reduction in fixed costs of 5 per cent, and another in material costs of 7 per cent is expected, an opti‐ misation that also happens by having fewer models with combustion engines.

Spain would become, in Volkswagen’s plans, a funda‐ mental country, if the gener‐ al framework and state sub‐ sidies are considered sufficient by the German company, which would mean their proposed Spanish gi‐ gafactory would come into operation in 2025, and join its others in Skelleftea, Swe‐ den, operated by Northvolt, and that of Salzgitter in Ger‐ many.

Another, and the ser‐ vice that can help you to save money, is the possi‐ bility of locating the cheapest fuel at the fuel station nearest to your vehicle’s position at the time of searching, which can help you to save a lot of euros on a fairly long journey, if you know how to operate the app cor‐ rectly.

A search for the cheap‐ est petrol station can re‐ turn a search result showing the location nearest to you, along with the price per litre of the fuel at each station in the vicinity, to enable
