Feria suspended again THE mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, has announced that the annual Malaga fair will be cancelled once more. “The 2021 Fair is not going to take place, in August, of course, or in September,” he said at a press conference. The fair was originally going to be postponed from August until September due to the advancement of the Delta variant of Covid. However, the mayor has now finally announced that with the rise in cases it will not happen at all this year. However, he has insisted that throughout the summer, musical activities will be held and activities for the elderly are also being considered following such a difficult year through the health pandemic. There is also an objective to help the Junta de Andalucia control the wave that is currently happening with cases.

Gas bottle six year high THE Spanish government’s official maximum price of a 12.5-kilo butane gas bottle cylinder is now set at €15.37 - the highest price it has been in six years. The price of a 12.5-kilo butane gas bottle in Spain has increased by 4.99 per cent to €15.37, which is the fifth consecutive rise and is now reaching its highest level since March 2015. The price rise was confirmed on Tuesday July 20, in the BOE Official State Gazette. The reason for the price increase has been put down to the cost of raw materials, which, according to the bulletin, was partially offset by the slight gain of the euro against the dollar (+ 1.32 per cent). The price that a butane cylinder can be sold for is reviewed every two months - specifically on the third Tuesday of the odd-numbered months.

Calls for neutering THE APAA Nerja Dog Cat Rescue charity is appealing for local bodies to introduce a neutering programme in Axarquia after taking in hundreds of abandoned ani‐ mals. Sue Kiff, who works with the charity, said: “This year has been particularly bad for rescuing puppies and kit‐ tens from river beds and just dumped everywhere. “There is an epidemic of cats everywhere. “All of the associations are full and still they keep coming but we can’t take in any more at the moment. “It is a very stressful situation. People expect us to run out and collect cats everywhere, but we are al‐ ready committed to helping 50 cats and kittens so have to deal with them first and don’t get any help from the local town hall, despite promise after promise year up‐ on year. We desperately need a cat neutering pro‐ gramme in Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox.” She added: “We rescued 29 cats last month from one place alone and there are many many more in colonies that are fed by local people and neutered at their ex‐ pense, but it can’t be done alone. “We need help from the local councils to do some‐ thing and encourage people to nurture and neuter. “I hope by highlighting the situation it will help to get them moving.”
CYCLING CHALLENGE: Alisdair was welcomed back by local councillors. ALISDAIR ANDERSON has arrived in Nerja after cycling 2,750 km from Dublin to raise nearly €60,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Association. Nerja councillors Daniel Rivas, Javier Rodriguez, and Javier Lopez, welcomed Mr Anderson after he arrived back in Nerja following the challenge. The councillors gave him a commemorative plaque on behalf of the council in recognition of this work, and praised Alisdair’s efforts to raise funds in tribute to his partner, Ruth Staines, who died of the disease at the age of 31, in April. The council said: “It is ad-
mirable what Alisdair has done for his partner, first taking care of her until the last moment, and later embarking on this challenge with which he has raised a significant amount of money that will go towards researching the disease and helping many people who suffer from it.” Alisdair had lived in Nerja with his partner for five years and was welcomed back from his cycle by family and friends. Speaking about his time with Ruth, Alisdair said she, “always looked fondly on her time in Nerja and it really was a special place for her.” He added: “The Irish Motor
Neuron Disease Association provides care and support to people with MND, their families, friends and carers. Without them, we would have been lost. The support they provided to Ruth throughout her illness allowed her to live a much more comfortable life. “From mobility and wheelchairs, nursing, homecare support, counselling these were all critical services we depended on.” He thanked Nerja Council for the support he received, and said he had travelled through the UK, France and Spain after setting out on May 14 before arriving in Nerja.
RESCUED: Puppies and kittens need to be helped.
