Improved resources for the Guardia Civil

SPAIN’S central government is aware that Guardia Civil installations and materials have been neglected in Almeria provinces.

Maria Gamez, the Guardia Civil’s director general, recently vis‐ ited the province where she was able to see for herself the mu‐ nicipalities, including Roquetas de Mar, whose facilities are af‐ fected.

Last week it was the turn of the Interior minister Fernando Grande‐Marlaska who did not deny there were deficiencies when answering questions in the national parliament, but blamed spend‐ ing cuts by the present government’s predecessors.

The minister conceded that the Guardia Civil now had fewer per‐ sonnel, were affected by inadequate upkeep of buildings and fail‐ ure to renew material resources, including their vehicles in Almeria Province.

Responding to a Vox party MP, Grande‐Marlaska revealed that 122 of the Almeria Guardia Civil vehicles were more than 15 years old or had more than 300,000 on the clock.

“The Ministry of the Interior is committed to making a significant effort to replace and compensate for the lack of personal and mate‐ rial resources that occurred between 2011 and 2018,” he declared.

Local businesses sponsored several tables, while Bar El Puente donated tombola prizes and all the food for the barbecue.

Almeria approves La Vega project AFTER months of conversa‐ tions with the Compensa‐ tion Board, Almeria Town Hall has approved a pro‐ posed urbanisation project for the Vega de Aca area.

The project is scheduled to be finished in 18 months’ time and has a proposed budget worth nearly €5.5 million.

Vendor selling counterfeit goods GUARDIA CIVIL officers in the Almeria municipality of Vicar have arrested a 53‐year‐old man who was running a stall in the travelling market being held in the town, charged with the suspected crime of selling counterfeit goods with fake registered trademarks.

Police say he was in in possession of 429 counterfeited t‐ shirts and was arrested for the manufacture, distribution, and commercialisation of clothing without a registered trade‐ mark, and for being in breach of industrial and commercial trademarks legislation.

Guardia Civil officers seized the garments during their regu‐ lar patrols of local markets across Almeria Province. The fake goods lacked proper documentation and often pose a safety hazard.

A police sting was set up on the stall after officers noticed more people than usual at the vendor’s stall. The police inves‐ tigation continues to try and track others involved in the manufacture and distribution of the fake goods.

Busy time THE docks at Carboneras and Almeria City, both run by Almeria’s Port Authority (APA), handled almost 685,000 tons of merchandise last May, 129 per cent more than in May 2020. The 2.6 million tons passing through both seaports between January and June made APA Andalucia’s busiest port authority.

Lucky escape EIGHTY people were evacuated from three Vera apartment buildings in the early hours of last Saturday morning when residents contacted the Emergency Services after noticing a strong smell of gas. They were all able to return home once the leak had been repaired and the building thoroughly aired.

A new face PEDRO ANGEL TORRES MOLINA was sworn in as Mojacar’s councillor for Public Works and Gardens after Agustin Montoya Perez resigned from the post on reaching retirement age. Torres, who is 43, married and the father of two children, has until now been a court-appointed judicial expert.

Iron ore mine all mapped out TWO geology students from Lorraine University in Nancy (France) spent June exploring and mapping the Tres Pacos mine in Sierra Almagro.

Jean Charles Fidalgo and Anais Grange were invited to the mine through the mediation of Friends of the Bedar Mining Heritage (Apamibe) and stayed at a tourist apartment on the Cuevas del Almanzora coast.

Their findings at the disused iron ore mine will be used for their future dissertations but as Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez commented on visiting them at the mine, the results should also prove interesting

“This type of collaboration has several objectives,” the mayor said.

“On one hand it helps to at-

tract science tourism that opens up new possibilities for the sector because the students’ experiences are a further way of introducing our-

At the same time, the students’ work in mapping and studying the mine could provide the basis for promoting and revitalising an important part of Cuevas’ history and resources in the future, Fernandez pointed out.

Ore from the Tres Pacos mine was sent 13 kilometres along an overhead cable to Cala Picotas whose furnaces, still visible, were stoked from above and emptied from below. Several mine buildings have survived, offering a historic mining complex that Cuevas believes has tourism potential.

A crowded summer programme VERA Town Hall has now announced its summer line‐up of concerts as well as cultur‐ al and leisure activities.

Detailing the summer programme, Am‐ paro Garcia and Maria Manuela Caparros ‐ respective councillors for Festivities and Cul‐ ture ‐ stressed the importance of restoring confidence in open‐air public events, while

promoting Vera as a safe, vibrant but also peaceful holiday destination.

Activities have been planned for the beach as well as the town centre while en‐ suring that health and safety regulations are met at all times, the councillors explained.

Bullfights are planned for July and August in the Plaza de Toros, with a Pura Sangre

(Thoroughbred) Equestrian event, also in Au‐ gust.

Vera’s Plaza Mayor, the El Palmeral fair site and the Plaza de la Pergola on the seafront will host the town’s traditional Ver‐ ano Cultural with events and spectacles that range from music to magic as well as live the‐ atre, jazz, dance, storytelling and circus.

Meeting Casting call for extras up again MEMBERS of Mojacar’s Red Cross workshops recently held their own end‐of‐term cele‐ bration.

Owing to the pandemic the Red Cross had to reinvent and redesign its senior citizens’ workshops, replacing them with activities they could car‐ ry out at home.

These included keep‐fit, cookery, art, reading, pas‐ times and puzzles, but after so many months without meet‐ ing, participants were looking forward to spending time to‐ gether before the start of the summer.

The day started with drink‐ ing chocolate and churros on the beach with participants lat‐ er given the chance to interact once again after the extraordi‐ nary situation they have expe‐ rienced over the last year.

“The gathering finished with the presentation of end‐of‐ term diplomas with everyone looking forward to the au‐ tumn and ‐ at last! ‐ face‐to‐ face activities,” the organisers said.

A GERMAN production company is look‐ ing for extras for a forthcoming film, 1000 Zeilen (1,000 Lines).

Amat hands Strange place over the reins to park a car THE Partido Popular’s 14th Provincial Confer‐ ence came to an end with messages from the party hierarchy for Gabriel Amat.

The PP’s secretary general as well as mayor of Roquetas de Mar, Amat now makes way for Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez‐Pacheco who takes over as the party’s Number One in Almeria Province.

Amat received direct thanks for his 17 years at the head of the party from the PP’s national secretary general, Teodoro Garcia Egea, and Juanma Moreno, the party’s regional presi‐ dent.

There were also Zoom messages from for‐ mer presidents Jose Maria Aznar and Mariano Rajoy as well as Javier Arenas, the PP’s ex‐ leader in Andalucia.

AN off‐road vehicle with trailer ap‐ peared without noise or warning, floating 20 metres off the Costacabana beach last Friday.

According to Spanish media reports, residents alerted the 112 Emergencies number after first noticing it shortly before 1am.

Police and the Salvamento Maritimo maritime rescue service who were called to the scene found the SUV and trailer were empty, with no sign of oc‐ cupants.

Unofficial sources later suggested that the vehicle was used to transport drugs and was later deliberately dumped in the sea and abandoned.

Turn the tide on plastic ADRA is once again joining the UN Environ‐ ment Programme’s Turn the Tide on Plastic campaign.

Coinciding with Blue Flag Mediterranean Week, volunteers will meet on Adra’s San Nicolas beach at 9am on July 4 to help rid the beach, sea and seabed of discarded plastic.

Adra intends to con‐ tinue promoting activi‐ ties supporting its com‐ mitment to taking care of the planet, Tourism councillor Elisa Fernan‐ dez announced.

“Throughout June the town hall took the initiative with Ecodomingos (EcoSun‐ days), reminding the public of the impor‐ tance of ensuring that the environment is rub‐ bish‐free,” the council‐ lor said.

“We want to en‐ courage the local pop‐ ulation and associa‐ tions like Promar to collaborate on keep‐ ing our beaches and natural surroundings clean,” Fernandez added.

Almost 90 per cent of the rubbish that pol‐ lutes oceans is plastic, she pointed out.

Eight million tons of plastic reach them each year, equivalent to dumping a lorryload in the sea every minute, according to UN fig‐ ures.

“At this rate, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050,” Fernandez warned.

Back to normal in 2022 WALK FOR LIFE recently announced two very important dates.

First came the announcement that the Arboleas-based charity are holding their annual Dinner Dance on Saturday October 2 at the Overa Hotel.

The menu, entertainment and possible transport will be announced at a later date and tickets costing €30 per person can be reserved by contacting the w4lifesweet@btinternet.com website.

There is a deposit of €10 per person which will only be refundable if the event is cancelled due to Covid.

Looking still further ahead, Walk for Life revealed that there will be a Walk on May 7, 2022.

“It will be a special day of fun involving the whole village from midday until late evening,” promised Walk for Life’s committee member and publicity manager, Judi Bedford-Keogh.

“There will be music, there will be food and you can walk three kilometres or six kilometres

and it would be lovely to see you in fancy dress.

People have been brilliant supporting the 6K Any Way challenge and we cannot thank them enough.

“We do hope the groups who did the challenge will walk as groups on this special day,” Judi said.

Walk for Life is a charity committed to helping people with cancer and for the last 10 years one of its most popular fundraising events was a sixkilometre walk.

Covid prevented the walk from going ahead as usual last year and it was substituted by 6K Any Way. Participants walked, ran, cycled, pushed a buggy, pushed a wheelchair, swam, walked in their gardens or on their treadmills, raising more than €6,000 for the charity.

Owing to the Covid situation, the same formula had to be used this year between May 8 and July 3.

But - fingers crossed - next year it will be business, and walking, as usual on May 7.

Saving owls - What a hoot!

BARN OWLS are nocturnal birds of prey that were once very common throughout rural areas of the province, especially in ar‐ eas of intensive agriculture, but in recent years their numbers have dropped alarmingly, al‐ legedly due to the massive use of agrochemicals, but now, thanks to the massive imple‐ mentation of biological control in our crops, they are showing an increase in numbers again.

An agroecological meeting took place at the University of Almeria on June 23 featuring the Lechuza project, detailing how owls live, their feeding habits, and their threatened place in the environment.

“Greater biodiversity directly favours pest control and the sus‐ tainability of our crops,” ex‐

Eight chicks have arrived in Almeria from a recovery centre for injured birds in Madrid, where there are adult birds who can no longer survive freely in the wild but can still reproduce. They will eventually be released into the wild. The project started in 2018.

New PP leader in Almeria THE Partido Popular (PP) have elected a new leader in Alme‐ ria, Javier A Garcia. He replaces Gabriel Amat as the party

struggles with a now dismissed councillor’s alleged role in a €2.6 million masks fraud.

Garcia won the position

with 98 per cent of the party’s support and a resounding en‐ dorsement from Juanma Moreno, the PP’s President of the Junta de Andalucia.

The PP has 22,000 members in Almeria. According to Gar‐ cia, the PP, “is the party of Almeria, the one that best re‐ flects the identity of our land, the one in which our neigh‐ bours identify themselves, the one that offers opportunities to our young people, certainty to families and tranquillity to our elders, and the one that gives hope and secure prospects for the future for Almeria.”

Garcia’s appointment comes as he was compelled to sack a PP councillor earlier this month for his alleged role in a €2.6 million mask and medical equipment fraud dating back to April 2020.

Oscar Liria was arrested on June 15 and remains in cus‐ tody awaiting trial. A judge ruled that he could not be bailed. Thirteen people have been arrested as part of opera‐ tion ‘Lua’.

Mask rule relaxed outdoors

SAFE DISTANCE: Although not necessary, many people are still opting to wear masks.

THE law in Spain states it is no longer necessary to wear a mask outdoors if you can keep a safe dis‐ tance. But this weekend, some people could be seen still wearing their masks while others weren’t.

We asked our readers if they felt safe enough to remove their masks.

In general, they responded that they thought it difficult to maintain a safe distance in crowded ar‐ eas, so they would continue to wear their masks as they did not feel safe in crowds.

The problem, some said, is that other people don’t seem to understand or care about maintain‐ ing a safe distance.

The general opinion is that it’s better to be safe than sorry and some readers compared the situa‐ tion to the UK where masks have not been manda‐ tory outdoors and still have high figures.

One reader commented on the situation in Ali‐ cante saying “it’s disgraceful, bars and nightclubs

and streets with people in their thousands shoul‐ der to shoulder. I’ve also seen an article from WHO and the Delta variant is managing to infect people in Israel and other countries even though they’ve been vaccinated. Just look what’s happened in Mallorca as the result of a few days of students there.”

Another said that especially with tourists now arriving from different places she would not feel safe.

On the other hand, several readers claimed to feel safe regardless of if they’d had the jab and one said “I love being outdoors with no mask now.”

Another pointed out “Most masks don’t protect you from others, but will help protect others from you if you happen to be infectious. So while you may FEEL less safe not wearing a mask, you won’t actually be any less safe. So go out and enjoy the freedom. Unless you are worried about others in‐ fecting you. In which case, keep your distance.”

McAfee complained THE prison in Spain where John McAfee was found dead in a suspected suicide appar‐ ently serves ‘stale bread and cold hot dogs’ according to the now deceased software pio‐ neer.

McAfee was discovered dead in his cell in the Barcelona Sant Esteve Sesrovires prison on Wednesday June 23, and it ap‐ pears that he committed sui‐ cide. According to local media reports in May two inmates killed themselves at the prison.

McAfee’s cause of death is un‐ der investigation.

McAfee had entered the prison in October after he had been caught at Barcelona air‐ port. He had been wanted by US authorities for tax evasion when he was detained. McAfee died on the day that he was due to be extradited to the US and had been on the run since 2019.

The prison has also housed other well‐known felons includ‐ ing a former Barcelona official.

“Here I am treated as a human being instead of a number.'”

After his arrest McAfee had been initially held at the Brians I prison complex, but was later transferred to Brians 2, where he was at the time of his death.

Madrid terminals reopen in July

BARAJAS AIRPORT: Things slowly returning to normal.

IN yet another sign that things are slowly returning to nor‐ mal, Aena has announced that it will be reopening terminals T2 and T3 in Madrid’s Barajas Airport this coming July 1. The terminals have been adapted for coronavirus and the health and safety of passengers.

With the reopening of these two terminals, it means that Madrid’s airport will be fully operational once again, and back to pre‐pandemic functionality. AENA recom‐ mends passengers who plan to travel in the next few days to check first with their air‐ line, because if their return flight is on the same day, July 1 or later, the arrival terminal could be different from the

one used in the outbound flight.

Under the coronavirus con‐ ditions, passengers will only be allowed to enter through the signposted entrances, and only passengers with a valid flight ticket or boarding pass, or those accompanying chil‐ dren or passengers who re‐ quire special assistance, are allowed to enter the terminal buildings.

Parking areas A, B, and C of the P2 level will be opera‐ tional again, along with the express surface parking, and from July 1, the transit bus service will stop at T3, main‐ taining a frequency of every 10 minutes during the busiest hours.

Turtle dove shooting banned AN estimated 900,000 turtle doves are shot by hunters each year in Spain, which has led to al‐ most all of the Spanish autonomous communi‐ ties placing a one‐year ban on the shooting of the birds.

The turtle doves fly each year across Spain in spring and autumn mi‐ grating from sub‐Saharan Africa.

In Britain, the turtle dove is an endangered species, with reports claiming that there are as few as 2,000 pairs of them left, and globally, the species is also in dan‐ ger of extinction.

Scientists have urged that a four‐year shooting ban be put in place to cover their entire route that also includes Portu‐ gal, Malta, Italy and France.

Experts say that if turtle dove hunting was halted in Western Europe, their numbers would increase by about 5 per cent each year. As well as shooters, the birds also face threats from agricultural intensifi‐ cation that reduces their food availability. They normally thrive on the seeds from annual wild‐ flowers that have been virtually eradicated by modern herbicides.

“This is a really positive step from Spanish author‐ ities because Spain is a key country on the migra‐ tion route of the species,” said Dr Andy Evans from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

“Hunting exacerbates the problems for these birds caused by agricultur‐ al changes, but both prob‐ lems need to be tackled in order to save the turtle dove. By stopping hunt‐ ing, turtle doves are given a better chance to recov‐ er.”

Spain’s Ornithological Society said that putting a stop to shooting wasn’t enough and that the country should add the bird to its list of endan‐ gered species.

Crowdfunding pays for girl’s cancer operation DOCTORS at a hospital in Barcelona have operated for Ewing’s sarcoma on Israe, a 10-year-old Moroccan girl whose treatment was made possible by a worldwide crowdfunding campaign.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that begins in the bones or surrounding soft tissues and usually occurs in children and adolescents.

Israe was diagnosed with pelvic cancer last January and, since she could not be operated on in her country due to the high surgical complexity and not being able to afford treatment abroad, her parents sought help. Thousands of people around the world responded to their crowdfunding campaign online.

Soylaiman Izaagague, Israe’s father, launched the campaign.

Within four months and with support from the media, he managed to draw thousands of people from all over the world to collaborate so that Israe could be operated on at the HM Nou Delfos Hospital.

The rare and complicated operation was needed to fix complex bone problems, and help damaged bones regenerate and come back to life.

Spain found guilty

THE European Court for Jus‐ tice confirmed on June 24 that Spain needs to do more to protect Doñana National Park, home to one of Eu‐ rope’s largest wetlands.

The enormous park in the southern region of Andalucia spreads across Cadiz, Huelva and Sevilla and boasts a di‐ verse ecosystem of lagoons, marshlands, scrub woodland, beaches and sand dunes.

It is home to fallow deer, wild boars, badgers and en‐ dangered species including the Spanish imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx.

It is also on the migratory

route of millions of birds each year and the Court has found that farmers are ille‐ gally building wells which drain off much of the water and the Spanish Government has allowed water to be di‐ verted for use to support the tourist industry.

The Court, based in Luxem‐ bourg has agreed with the European Commission which filed a complaint in 2019 that lagoons and marshes were drying out and ruled that Spain was in breach of EU na‐ ture legislation because it “did not take into account the illegal water extractions”

50 held in immigration sting NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 50 people over the illegal entry of Dominican citizens into Spain through Adolfo Suárez‐Madrid Barajas Airport. The scam involved using impersonation by moving through people who had similar physical characteristics to avoid border controls.

At least 61 people have been detected who were trying to access Spanish territory in this way. They reportedly paid amounts close to €3,000 to participate in the scheme. Police have arrested 46 in Barcelona and another

four in Madrid.

The investigation began with the detection at airports in the Dominican Republic and Madrid, of a greater number people than usual who were trying to enter Spain using Spanish documentation such as National Identity Cards, Spanish passport and residence cards along with Dominican passports. None were the actu‐ al real people.

The investigation has been ongoing for more than a year.

New VAT rules for online shopping NEW EU‐wide Value‐Added Tax (VAT) rules for online shopping came into force this week as part of efforts to en‐ sure a more level playing field for all businesses. The new rules also aim to simplify cross‐border e‐commerce and introduce greater transparency for EU shoppers when it comes to pricing and consumer choice.

The new rules came into force on Wednesday July 1 and will affect online sellers and marketplaces/platforms both inside and outside the EU, postal operators and couriers, customs and tax administrations, as well as con‐ sumers.

Under the current system, goods im‐

ported into the EU valued at less than €22 by non‐EU companies are exempt from VAT. As from July 1, this exemp‐ tion is now lifted.

Currently, e‐commerce sellers need to have a VAT registration in each Member State in which they have a turnover above a certain overall thresh‐ old, which varies from country to coun‐ try. From July 1, these different thresh‐ olds will be replaced by one common EU threshold of €10,000 above which the VAT must be paid in the Member State where the goods are delivered.

The EU’s VAT system was last updat‐ ed in 1993 and has not kept pace with the rise in cross‐border e‐commerce.

Mechanic crushed by lorry A mechanic in Sevilla who had been working underneath the cab of a lorry changing a wheel was crushed to death on Thursday June 24 when the jack gave way.

The 54‐year‐old man from Le‐ brija was dead by the time emer‐ gency services arrived on the scene.

The accident happened around 4.45pm in a lorry parking area at a roundabout on the A‐471 road in‐ to Lebrija. A co‐worker who was helping him change the tyre as the jack failed was unable to help the victim as the lorry fell on him.

Passenger faked PCR test A MAN who tried to fly from Brussels Airport with a falsi‐ fied PCR test has been sen‐ tenced to a year in jail. The sentence is the first handed

down by Belgian courts since authorities announced in April that using a false PCR test would be punishable by prison time.

Venice to ‘danger’ list UNESCO may add Venice to the list of ‘World Heritage in Danger’ after advisors warned the city is facing a series of threats.

“The continued deteriorating effects of human intervention, combined with climate change on the vulnerable lagoon ecosystem, threaten to result in irreversible change,” the body said this week. It said cruise ships are deemed a ‘threat’ to the famous Italian city as they continue to sail through the historic city’s water front centre, despite the Italian government ruling that they should be banned.

“While legal bans already exist for ships over 40,000 gross ton to enter the Venice Lagoon, it has no practical effect, as no alternative exists for the mooring of these large ships,” UNESCO said, adding a long-term solution was needed as a matter of urgency.

Complex impacts of mass tourism, the constant decrease of population and the basic deficiencies in governance and cooperated management have led to a significant loss of historical authenticity within Venice, UNESCO stated. It also said the lagoon’s ecology faces “irreversible change.”

Authorities say that be‐ tween April 19 and June 11, 576 people were discovered with a forged PCR test at Brussels Airport after Bel‐ gium allowed non‐essential foreign travel. Travellers are required to show a negative PCR test result and complete a locator form.

Failing to fill in the form correctly, making a false declaration or attempting to beat the PCR test system can result in an immediate €750 fine or further prosecution.

The man jailed on Tues‐ day, June 22, presented a negative PCR result from a friend who had falsified the test. He had also refused to accept an out‐of‐court agreement and failed to ap‐ pear before judges.

The court said the man’s behaviour was “not only an‐ tisocial” but was also poten‐ tially life‐threatening, and the jail term was appropri‐ ate given the circumstances of the case.

Child left alone as mum partied NATIONAL POLICE in Sevilla have arrested a 24-year-old woman who abandoned her child so that she could go drinking.

Police say neighbours found the seven-year-old wandering the common areas of a block of flats in Calle Carlos Marx at 12.40am on Thursday June 24.

Neighbours reported that the girl and her mother and uncle had been living in the complex for about three years.

The neighbours told police the girl didn’t seem to attend school regularly, was left alone often and had bruising on her legs. One told officers she sometimes bathed the girl and fed her when she was hungry.

The mother was located by police at around 2am in the Gran Plaza on a number provided by the landlord. Police say she left work at three in the afternoon and said she needed to go for a drink to relax.

The girl has now been put into foster care.

A BRITISH mum, her husband and their one‐year‐old daughter are unaccounted for after the collapse of a multi‐storey apart‐ ment block in Miami on Thurs‐ day June 24.

At least a dozen people are confirmed dead after the build‐ ing partially collapsed at around 1.30am on Thursday local time.

Miami‐Dade mayor Daniella Levine Cava updated the num‐ bers after officials said 150 peo‐ ple were unaccounted for.

Some 102 people are known to have escaped the disaster and are safe.

“The building is literally pan‐ caked,” Surfside mayor Charles Burkett said. “That is heart‐ breaking because it doesn’t mean, to me, that we are going to be as successful as we want‐ ed to be in finding people alive.”

Bhavna Patel, a 38‐year‐old British and US citizen, and her 42‐year‐old husband Vishal Pa‐ tel, and their one‐year‐old daughter Aishani Patel are among those unaccounted for.

Champlain Towers South was built in 1981 and has more than 100 residential units.

Endesa beefs up fraud squad HERE’S a shocker: Endesa fraud inspectors are beefing up against meter fiddlers and power scam‐ mers. And the recent hike in power rates is giving the inspec‐ tors’ fight new momentum.

Jose Antonio Franco is head of Endesa’s energy recovery depart‐ ment, and his team are responsi‐ ble for fighting fraud and to en‐ sure that “all the energy that enters the system ends up being billed.”

“The detection rate for these losses has varied considerably over time,” Franco said. “We have evolved technically and in recent years we have doubled our best success rate. Fraud is now detect‐ ed in one out of every two inspec‐ tions, which is 25 per cent.”

Endesa is a pioneer in Spain in implementing artificial intelligence in the detection of electricity fraud, thanks to one man ‐ Javier Tejedor ‐ a telecommunications engineer who was already part of the company but in whom they spotted a great potential.

“I am self‐taught, I started in da‐ ta science in 2012, on my own,” Tejedor says. “I was curious and I trained on platforms, many free,

where there is a lot of high‐quality content available,” he says, adding Endesa saw the possibilities in fighting fraud.

Franco says that no matter how robust the fraudster is, they look for a way to defraud.

“Before, with the old‐fashioned

mechanical counter meters, it was very obvious, very simple, fraud was done by oneself, or by a brother‐in‐law, but now it is done by someone who is prepared, he has become professional, and you even find integrated circuits inside the meters,” he says.

THE UK’s Ambassador to Spain says he’s proud of the record of service provided by the Armed Forces and believes that their dedication to duty underscores their importance to British na‐ tionals living in Spain.

that as envoy to Spain he wears many hats and is involved in chari‐ table works across the communi‐ ty, but that “one of the roles I am most proud to fulfil is that of Pa‐ tron of the Royal British Legion in Spain.”

“As we celebrate not only Armed Forces Day, but the cente‐ nary of the Legion, I wanted to re‐ flect a little on what it means to me and why its work is so impor‐ tant to UK nationals in Spain,” he said in a press release.

“On Saturday I was hon‐ oured to attend an event in Orihuela, alongside serving offi‐ cers, veterans, families, re‐ servists and volunteers, to mark this double commemora‐ tion,” he said, adding that just four weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be able to visit HMS Kent, while she made a port visit to Alicante ‐ a visible demonstration of the close co‐ operation between the British Armed Forces and our Allies.

“Over the last 18 months, the fundraising climate and Covid re‐ strictions have made the work of the Community Support Team in‐ credibly tough, but the Legion’s dedicated volunteers have found ways to deliver much‐needed support to its beneficiaries in Spain, despite the difficult circum‐ stances,” he said.

THE lack of spectators during the coronavirus pandemic appears to have had a noticeable effect on the performance of athletes at the 2020 Biathlon World Cup, a new study by Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Psychology of Sport and Exercise shows. According to the new analysis, women also performed better in complex tasks, such as shooting, when an audience was present while men did not.

“The studies have been relatively clear so far, but the results are more heterogeneous when it comes to more complex coordinative tasks,”

Slow men, quick women… said Amelie Heinrich from the Institute of Sports Science at MLU. In general, it is assumed that performance tends to deteriorate when there is an audience.

She compared the running times and shooting successes of male and female biathletes from the 2018/2019 season with their performances in the 2020 season in the sprint and mass start events.

“The men’s results were as expected: they ran faster with an audience present, but performed more poorly in shooting,” Ms Heinrich said.

“The pandemic offers a unique opportunity to study an audience’s influence outside of experimental conditions in the real world,” she said.

While cross-country skiing mainly requires

stamina, shooting is a coordinative task.

It was the other way around for women.

They ran slower in the presence of spectators, but on average, it took them an entire second less to make their shot and, at least in the sprint, their scoring performance was 5 per cent higher.

“To our knowledge, this is the first time that a study was able to show a different effect of the audience on men and women,” said Professor Oliver Stoll, head of the sports psychology section at MLU.

Geckos lose tails, but not dinner

GECKOS remain fierce hunters whether or not their tails are attached to their bodies. Like other lizards, geckos can distract predators by quickly dropping their tails.

The small lizards’ vertebrae are perforated, making it easier to disconnect them without any formation of scar tissue or loss of blood. Though this ability can keep lizards from being eaten, the manoeuvre is performed at a cost, according to a new study from the University of California at Riverside.

“Other studies have documented the negative effects of tail loss on lizards’ ability to run, jump, mate, and reproduce,” said UCR biologist Marina Vollin.

“However, few have examined their ability to capture food when they lose their tails, which is critical for regenerating the tail and for overall survival.”

The researchers found that geckos successfully captured crickets about 77 per cent of the time both before and after losing tails - a surprising retention of accuracy since tails appear to help stabilise gecko body positions during and after a strike. “The geckos were much slower without tails, and their attack strikes much more awkward,” she said.

Horses were filthy, starving and thirsty THE Guardia Civil are investi‐ gating a man in Almonte near Huelva after 15 horses were left starving, without water and kept in a faeces‐strewn field.

Six of the animals needed immediate veterinary care be‐ cause they were extremely malnourished and were suf‐ fering from potential liver and kidney problems.

Four other horses also needed immediate care and were provided with proper forage and water. The others were checked and were found to be thirsty and hungry.

The owner faces charges for not providing the animals with adequate hygienic, nutri‐ tional and veterinary care, the Guardia Civil said.

Police, animal care and vet‐ erinary staff raided the prop‐ erty on June 17 after learning of the horses’ poor condition.

The Guardia Civil have pre‐ viously advocated a public campaign highlighting the mistreatment and abandon‐ ment of domestic animals.

They urge anyone who wit‐ nesses abuse of animals to im‐ mediately report it to authori‐ ties.

Ceuta: Don’t feed immigrants A GOVERNMENT delegate has asked Ceuta residents not to give food to immigrants to try and stop them from loitering near supermarkets and restaurants.

A government delegate in Ceuta, Salvadora Mateos, has asked people not to hand out food to Moroccans who remain in the city following a recent dramatic increase in immigration.

Ms Mateos has praised the people of Ceuta for their solidarity, but asked them to work with the NGOs - non-governmental and non-profit organisations that often help out with humanitarian disasters.

“I want to make them see that their actions cause these young people to remain at the doors of supermarkets, restaurants, etc, looking for help,” she said.

In May Spain mobilised the army in Ceuta after more than 5,000 immigrants entered the autonomous city in a single day.

Authorities said that they entered via the Tarajal and Benzu maritime breakwaters.

Why Russia fired on HMS Defender WAR SHIP: The UK denied an incident took place.

RUSSIAN claims that it fired on HMS Defender, which was in the Black Sea on a NATO mission, came just two days af‐ ter the UK signed an agree‐ ment to boost Ukraine’s naval capabilities.

Britain and Ukraine inked a naval cooperation agreement on June 21 onboard the HMS Defender which will include the development of a new naval base in the Sea of Avoz along with eight hi‐tech naval war‐ ships for Ukraine.

Russia has been meddling in Ukrainian affairs for more than a decade, since the ex‐Soviet country made a bid to sign a co‐

operation agreement that would bring it closer to the EU. In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea and has encouraged separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The June 21 agreement for the UK to bolster Ukraine’s naval capabilities was signed by Minister for Defence Procure‐ ment Jeremy Quin and First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin representing the UK and the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Oleksandr Myroniuk.

“The UK and Ukraine have a close defence relationship, and we continue to strengthen this partnership to help deter

shared threats,” said Mr Quin, the minister responsible for naval procurement.

The deal is likely to have an‐ gered Moscow as it includes the sale of missiles which can be in‐ tegrated into existing Ukrainian naval and military platforms.

Two days later, on June 23, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed a coastguard vessel had shot at HMS Defender be‐ cause it had breached Russia’s territorial water. The UK how‐ ever swiftly denied an incident had taken place and said Russia was conducting regular exercis‐ es and did not fire at the war ship.

RYANAIR launched a blistering attack on Ireland’s Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan who has not yet reopened Ireland to air travel. The low‐cost airline, Ireland’s biggest carrier, on Wednes‐ day June 23 called on Minister Ryan to clarify why, when 18 other EU countries are now issuing the Digital Green Cert, he has failed to do so for Ireland’s vaccinated citizens.

British visitors arriving by air must quarantine for 10 days, but the airline pointed out that if they were to fly into Belfast instead, they can drive across the border from Northern Ireland with no restrictions whatsoever.

“With less than 50 Covid patients in our hospitals, and less than 20 in our ICUs, Ireland continues to delay the recovery of avi‐ ation and tourism due to the bogus and non‐medical fears about a Delta variant in the UK which is not resistant to vaccines,” Ryanair’s Eddie Wilson said. “It is time for Minister Ryan to wake up and roll out the EU Digital Cert at least for those Irish citizens who have been double vaccinated, and this can be switched on today! Negative PCR tests and Covid recoveries can be added lat‐ er.”

“Long Covid can have a lasting and debilitating impact on the lives of those affected,” said Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock. “Studies like this help us to rapidly build our under‐ standing of the impact of the con‐ dition and we are using these findings and other new research to develop support and treat‐ ments.”

Man tries to drown dog A MAN has been arrested in Madrid’s Coslada after he attempted to drown his dog in the middle of the street.

Luckily for the poor animal, Local Police officers were able to intervene. According to the local council the man was ar-

rested in Coslada by the Local Police after he attempted to drown his dog. He has been arrested for suspected abuse.

The shocking event happened a few days ago, but luckily Local Police officers were on patrol and caught the

man red-handed. The officers spotted the man, who appeared drunk at the time, as he tried to drown a dog.

Thanks to the quick action of the officers the life of Oso, the dog was saved.

The dog had been microchipped so it was possible to find out that the man who had tried to drown him, was in fact his owner.

Oso was taken by the Local Police officers to an Animal Protection Centre, where he is set to stay for a while. The dog’s owner has been arrested for the alleged offence of mistreatment, and he was also arrested for assaulting a police officer who stepped in to stop him from drowning the dog.

The City Council are seeking authorisation from the Community of Madrid to change the dog’s ownership over to the Animal Protection Centre. As soon as change of ownership has gone through the current owner will be disqualified from owning further animals.

Buckingham Palace says it ‘must do more’ to improve ethnic diversity BUCKINGHAM PALACE has released figures showing the levels of ethnic minority staff and says it “must do more” because levels are “not where it would like to be.” The release of the figures comes after the Royal family became embroiled in controversy after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aired racism complaints during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The palace report shows that just 8.5 per cent of staff belonged to an ethnic minority in the year 20202021. It says it will increase this to 10 per cent in the coming year.

Political parties in Granada walked out of a plenary session on June 25 as their demands for the mayor to resign failed to unseat Luis Salvador, who is now clinging to power despite repeated calls for him to leave office.

Salvador dismissed the walk out as “theatre”.

Granada mayor won’t quit P S O E and the Partido Popular (PP) are considering meeting to discuss what, if anything, can be done to remove Salvador.

PP councillor, Cesar Diaz, said, “There is no point in prolonging an untenable situation” while his Pode-

mos counterpart, Antonio Cambril, said the unseemly stand-off in the chamber was a “shame”.

Salvador has been mayor of Granada since 2019.

Earlier this month, the PP accused Luis Salvador, the head of the Ciu-

dadanos, of “entrenching himself” in office, while Salvador refused to resign and indicated he would seek a coalition partner elsewhere and that he is willing to speak “of future scenarios with everyone.” No such partner has been forthcoming.

On June 8, the president of the PP in Granada, Francisco Rodriguez, said the party’s seven councillors had renounced their powers and exited the coalition with Ciudadanos.

The PP said Salvador’s refusal to alternate who holds the position of mayor is their reason for breaking the pact.

Digging around for history THE Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Culture in Sevilla has put out a new tender for archaeological work at the necropolis of Carmona in the belief that there is an unexplored underground chamber within the site.

According to the tender, ‘geophysical anomalies’ were detected in 2020.

Carmona first opened to the public in 1885 after it was uncovered by Juan Fernandez Lopez and George Edward Bonsor. The duo discovered more than 100 Roman tombs and built a museum to display artefacts.

In 1930 shortly before his

death, Bonsor transferred the site to public ownership.

Carmona was originally a Tartessian-Turdetani settlement. With the arrival of Phoenician traders from Tyre,

Carmona was transformed into a city. Centuries later, it became a Roman stronghold of Hispania Baetica. It was known as Carmo in the time of Julius Caesar some 2,000 years ago.

Brits and Italians moving to Canaries THE Canary Islands have experienced an increase in population despite the fact that they have registered more deaths than births.

That increase of 0.33 per cent is thanks to the arrival of immigrants mainly Brits and Italians.

A recent change because of Covid now permits communities to hold the AGM by email or Internet. This means that the list of debtors would appear with the notification of the AGM.

BRITISH transport company National Express has announced its acquisi‐ tion of Transportes Rober (Rober) in Spain at a cost of €13 million.

The acquisition of Rober, which has operated the urban bus contract in Granada for more than 20 years, represents a further step in consoli‐ dating the regional and urban bus markets, a strategy which Alsa (which it also owns) has successfully

The report also found that total global wealth grew by 7.4 per cent and wealth per adult rose by 6 per cent to reach a record high of $79,952 (€67,000) and interestingly, overall, the countries most affect‐ ed by the pandemic have not fared worse in terms of wealth creation.

Bad bank review SPEAKING at a meeting in Santander, Spain’s Minister of the Economy Nadia Calvino explained her view of the fu‐ ture of Sareb, the National ‘Bad Bank’ which was set up after the 2008 financial crisis.

According to a report from Reuters, when questioned about the future she said “We are currently considering what the strategy should be for the entity from now on.”

Currency outlook: Hawkish Fed turbocharges the US dollar, reopening delay rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.86 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.22 to $1.19 The euro spent the first half of June trad‐ ing in a narrow range, as optimism over the reopening of more parts of the Eurozone offset some dovish forward guidance from the European Central Bank (ECB).

However the euro then suffered a dra‐ matic drop off in mid‐June, as the strong negative correlation in the EUR/USD pairing saw the single currency suffer following a surge in the US dollar.

EUR exchange rates have then remained largely subdued through the latter half of the month, only finding some modest sup‐ port on the back of some upbeat Eurozone PMI figures.

Looking ahead, with the ECB expected to maintain its dovish bias for some time, and indications that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is starting to spread through Europe, any upside in the euro over the next month may prove limited.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.15 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Down from $1.41 to $1.39 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, amidst a mix of coronavirus and Brexit uncertainty.

In regards to coronavirus concerns, the rapid spread of the Delta variant through‐ out the UK, and the government’s subse‐ quent delaying of its reopening date dealt a major blow to Sterling.

Renewed Brexit tensions between the

UK and EU over the Northern Ireland proto‐ col has also driven volatility in GBP ex‐ change rates.

Sterling’s attempts to rally towards the end of June were then scuppered by the Bank of England (BoE) as it struck a disap‐ pointing dovish tone following its latest policy meeting.

Turning to next month, the direction of GBP exchange rates will largely depend on whether lifting of the remaining coron‐ avirus restrictions goes ahead on July 19 as planned, with any further delay likely to place considerable pressure on the pound.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.70 to £0.71 USD/EUR: Up from €0.81 to €0.83 The US dollar rallied sharply over the past month, with USD exchange rates strik‐ ing a two month high, following a surpris‐ ingly hawkish shift by the Federal Reserve.

The Fed’s more hawkish forward guid‐ ance came amidst a sharp upturn in US in‐ flationary pressure in May, as the country’s latest consumer price index printed at a dizzying 5 per cent.

However it wasn’t all plain sailing for the ‘greenback’ with some underwhelming US data, mostly notably May’s non‐farm pay‐ rolls, which printed well below expecta‐ tions for the second consecutive month.

Going forward, whether or not the US dollar is able to maintain its positive trajec‐ tory will likely depend quite a bit on June’s payroll figures as another disappointing reading could raise some concerns over an unbalance economic recovery.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IT’S not often I allow myself to succumb to pure unmitigated anger.

I’m a bit long in the tooth for a condition that can sometimes create more problems than it actually eliminates.

But this week I encountered an exception to my own rule. It began with the announcement that poor white schoolchildren were under‐ achieving in UK schools. Oddly the UK media actually gave this news quite extensive coverage. (Deferring perhaps to the new GB channel that is literally plundering their viewing figures!) This announcement was bad enough, but it was watching the young white pupils being interviewed that truly got this old boy’s hackles up. Primarily it was quite a pleasant rarity to see two or three white pupils appear on the screen in succession!

However, that’s where any pleasurable viewing ended.

It was the general demeanour of these youngsters that got to me; they seemed confused and almost reticent to air their views on camera.

The vast numbers of black and ethnic minority students, who regularly appear on these programmes for a whole cross section of their ‘educational opinions,’ are generally (unless they’re whinging) bright, happy and full of hope for the future. In contrast these white children seemed bewildered and

utterly lacking in confidence. This is a direct result of the woke and PC attitude toward the education of our youngsters; a system of the left which is deliberately concentrating so much on making sure the minorities are put to the fore and given every opportunity, they are neglecting the children of the white indigenous

majority. Instead of instilling them with national pride and confidence, these ‘privileged’ children are being made to feel ashamed of their ancestry and responsible for just about every malady that ails their great nation.

Everywhere they look they witness anti‐white propaganda; from their sportsmen taking the knee to the desecration of their historical statues.

Is it any wonder their grades are suffering and they are developing complexes of inferiority? This week (not for the first time) the BBC advertised jobs where only black and ethnic minorities need apply. This is a disgraceful example of the pure hypocrisy of an organisation that is supposed to be anti‐racist, but is actually steeped in racism and panders to the ethnic minorities purely to make sure Labour gets a favourable result in the next election.

(Some chance!) This is all a part of the insidious woke and Marxist BLM agenda.

Attack British culture, undermine its historical achievements, lower morale, diminish belief in itself and turn the citizens and families against each other. And where better to start than among the young and most impressionable? Have no doubt the aim of this evil ideology is not integration, it is domination. It’s time for the indigenous majority to stand up and be counted and let these people know that the UK is utterly sick of its whole traitorous anti British attitude. If not I’m afraid the white populace will finish up the same way as many have in South Africa.

And believe me, that is not a pleasant proposition at all!

SAVE US FROM THIS PLAGUE OF WOKERY NORA JOHNSON BREAKING VIEWS

SPARE a thought today for all the virtue‐sig‐ nalling going on. Have some sympathy for this plague of wokery which decrees that, for example, certain garden features ‐ ‘out‐ door living space’ (formerly known as ‘a gar‐ den’), ‘outdoor fireplace’ (um, ‘barbecue’) or patio (sorry ‘terrace’) ‐ are as dated and naff as a Sony Walkman. Since when, and more importantly, why, did rooms and gardens become ‘spaces’?

Frankly, though, whether you call it a gar‐ den or an outdoor living space, it’s funda‐ mentally the same principle as inside your house ‐ design it based on what you like and how you plan to use it, rather than some glossy magazine ideal of how these spaces should look and function.

I know many people who’ve spent vast sums on renovations that basically make their place look like a mid‐priced hotel. Or spent a

What’s the point? So, if you have a fire pit and you have people over a lot in the evening, great investment. If it’s something

you’ve bought because that gets you entry in‐ to the middle class aspirational garden club, then there’s really no point. As for artificial grass, if you have kids and dogs and are time poor, it’s actually an excellent proposition.

So, in summary, homes are not about

keeping up with the Joneses, but making a space work for YOU. But why confine any list of ‘tackiest things’ to overpriced rubbish sold in shops smelling of incense and playing whale calls as back‐ ground music? Our anger would be better di‐ rected at virtue‐signalling corporations which produce propaganda claiming that by buying their products consumers are saving the plan‐ et from ecological disaster and promoting the physical and psychological well‐being of all mankind.

The best example I’ve come across was a company plaque with the subversive mes‐ sage: ‘You don’t have to be mad to work here but we have our diversity quota to fulfil.’

Nuff said. I rest my case, m’lud.

Just a nuisance, not a benefit MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION

Views of a Grumpy Old Man SO that piece of lower than pond life Hancock has resigned. It shouldn’t have been up to him - Boris should have fired him instantly it was confirmed that the photo was genuine. Hancock has been totally taking the piss out of every single person in the UK, especially all the folks that wanted one last kiss with a loved one that was about to die, but his rules wouldn’t allow it. Yes his rules!

Once again a politician has proven that they are all just lying, cheating toe rags.

Please don’t tell me any more what I can’t do or that I might face a £10,000 fine if I break a quarantine rule or get arrested, until he is now arrested and fined.

Never mind the fact he employed this woman just to have his bit on the side on hand for their own reasons, nothing to do with his work as Health Secretary. And how about the arrogance of Johnson saying that Hancock had apologised and that was the end of it - was it heck!

I watch quite a lot of TV for no real reason except I actually quite enjoy it. But being an

OAP with various health problems I do find the advertising on daytime TV a bit depressing. Every other advert is about making arrangements for when I die so my loved ones don’t have to worry about the funeral. I've seen commercials where investors offer to purchase your home with a cash offer so you can avoid repossession.

There are lots of ads for cancer charities.

The assumption is that the daytime TV viewers are in financial turmoil, very sick or unemployed when, in fact, all I want to do is watch a bit of light-hearted TV. So how’s everyone enjoying Brexit? I was criticised a few times for only worrying how it affected me and how I should look at the bigger picture and my reply was I actually don’t give a toss about the bigger picture.

Import duty is putting up prices on products in the UK and sending a parcel to anyone in the UK now comes with the added delight of filling in a customs declaration.

And it’s stopped us travelling back and forth to the UK during the pandemic.

It’s affected trading shares on the UK stock exchange and Marks and Sparks have had problems getting fresh salad stuff in their stores.

Just all a nuisance rather than a benefit.

What is clear is that animals are far more sensitive, perceptive and intelligent than we believed at the time when Jack the Ripper was prowling the streets of London.

We now know that dogs can learn to drive a car, but it is un‐ likely that, in my lifetime, they will be piloting Airbuses into Malaga airport. Monkeys can’t write a po‐ em in French on a blackboard, but they are capable of double‐bluff‐ ing onlookers when hiding food.

They have probably had that ca‐ pability for millennia.

Not long ago, it was generally thought that most animals and all fish felt no real pain, so we could treat them as we wished. It is now known that they experience pain,

fear, distress and bereavement. A bird, incarcerated in a cage for life, is aware that he should be free to fly with complete freedom, to socialise and to mate.

The human was the last crea‐ ture to arrive on our planet. Be‐ fore us there were living beings such as plants, organisms, mi‐ crobes, insects, marine life, rep‐ tiles, birds and mammals.

Humankind has always taken advantage of the vastly superior powers conferred on them by the Almighty, using them to the detri‐ ment of those less well endowed.

Humans are the only species with the ability to save our planet and, at the same time, the only species to precipitate its demise.

Neglect of the environment in‐ cludes air pollution and the wilful destruction of trees, vegetation and marine life upon which other beings depend for their survival.

It also means the slaughter of whales, rhinos and tigers and the chemical‐poisoning of cattle, chickens and fish for our con‐ sumption.

The Almighty cannot be im‐ pressed!

One of the biggest mistakes that po‐ tential buyers make is that they as‐ sume that they can simply build a house or renovate a ruin.

Don’t be put off, the key here is once you have had your offer accepted like any other purchase in Spain is don’t sign or pay anything until you have taken some specialist legal advice from a lawyer that you have chosen yourself. That way you will have a

qualified legal opinion as to what you are getting into. The Spanish Solicitor or Abogado will be able to liaise with the authorities, local town hall, your ar‐ chitect and builders to ensure that you have the necessary licences to ensure that your rural retreat is everything that you want it to be.

So if you’re planning a move to Spain, whether it is for a new place in the sun or you plan to retire to Spain, take some independent advice. As with all my articles this isn’t legal advice and myself and many other lawyers are at your disposal. Of course ask the lawyer for their registration number and check with the Bar Association that they are able to practise.

To be or not to B-12 YOU won’t want to feel weak or fatigued as the social demands of the summer increase.

Sleepless cyan

HIDDEN FACTOR: The colour cyan can prevent or encourage sleep.

NATURAL SOURCE: B-12 is found in meat, poultry, fish, egg and milk products.

RECENT research has shown that the colour cyan - between green and blue - affects our sleep.

Biologists based in the University of Manchester say that higher levels of cyan keep people awake, whilst lower levels induce sleep.

It is hoped that the results will mean that computer screens and phones could increase or decrease the levels of cyan in the screen.

Existing ‘night mode’ settings for phones and laptops are the result of previous research which showed a link between blue light and sleep. However, this research, published in the journal Sleep, shows the particular impact of the colour cyan.

Participants in the research were exposed to more or less cyan in order to measure the different levels of the sleep hormone melatonin.

The researchers suggest that

shades of cyan could be used on computer screens to keep people awake, such as those working on night shifts for example.

Or shades and colours which give the same affect, but don’t actually have cyan, could be used if the aim was to reduce anything that impedes sleep.

The findings could be particularly useful to help families with teenagers who stay up at night using their mobile phones.

Dirty habits WE are creatures of habit. But, did you know that even habits that can seem inconsequential can have a negative effect on your health and beauty.

Here are four things that you probably do every day which not only impact your health but also your physical appearance.

If you drink a lot of milk, particularly more than one litre a day, then you are consuming too much fat. Just one cup of milk contains 7.93g of fat so you can see how that can build up.

Having said that, doctors do recommend that you drink some milk due to its high calcium content, just take note that you don’t drink too much. Another habit you might regularly do is cross your legs. However, doing so limits the flow of blood through your arteries and can cause numbness, increased pressure and even varicose veins in the legs.

You also might need to amend your Saturday night routine. Plucking or waxing your eyebrows immediately before applying your make-up causes chemicals in your make-up to come into direct contact with your pores.

Your skin will absorb this and it may cause irritation. The ideal time to pluck or wax is to do so with clean skin.

One of our main bad habits is touching our face. However, we are simply covering our face with all the bacteria that our hands have gathered during the day, which increases the risks of skin infections.

Keeping your dogs healthy EMMA WALLSWORTH AS a fellow dog owner, carer and trainer, dogs can definitely fill a hole in one’s life.

Many years ago, I managed a dog and cat re‐ homing centre abroad which was a real roller‐coaster of an experience.

Many of the dogs that came into the cen‐ tre needed fast treatment. I have worked closely with some fantastic vets and learned so much, of how to quickly boost immune systems and get these animals, sometimes, literally back on their feet, well paws. I am lucky enough now to have worked with an ar‐ ray of different animal over the years.

One of the most common problems we dealt with was the state of dog’s paws, so just to help anyone who moves to a hot country, please don’t walk your dogs in hot weather as hot weather can cause roads to melt and dogs to burn their paws on asphalt, tarmac and artificial grass. The best time in hot cli‐ mates to walk your dogs are first thing in the morning or early evening.

One way of keeping your dog naturally healthy through the hot summer is to add a

HEALTHY DOGS: Don’t walk in the heat. little apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water and food. I personally add a drop of ACV to our dog’s water and a drizzle of olive to his food which keeps the dog’s skin and coat in a nice silky condition.

Apple Cider Vinegar: recommended dose start with half a tsp and build to one tea‐ spoon for small dogs and start with one tsp and build up to one tablespoon for medium and large dogs. Should you feed your dogs canned green tripe add to their meal a little ACV, which can hide the smell.

If you plan to add apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water or food, start with a small amount (a capful) and gradually increase the amount until you reach the recommendation shared above.

(ACV = Apple cider vinegar) Apple cider vinegar can also help: • improving digestion • combatting yeast infections • relieving allergy symptoms • supporting joint health • clearing up tear stains • reduce the chance of ear infections.

To keep ear infections at bay, it is impor‐ tant to keep our dogs’ ears cleaned. It’s said that ‘The rule is to clean your pet’s ears when they’re dirty.’ To make a wash you use equal parts of ACV to warm water. If your dog is not feeling itself or is in pain, they can display dis‐ comfort with constant washing of their paws.

Some dogs are wheat intolerant, here is an easy wheat free recipe for your dog: Treats recipe: 1) 1 cup of gram flour 2) cup of rice flour 3) cup of maise flour 4) 1 finely grated carrot

5) 1 finely grated apple 6) 250g finely grated sweet potato 7) 1 tbsp of organic coconut oil 8) 1 free range egg 9) 1 tbsp of organic olive oil Method: Mix all together in a bowl, roll out and cut into one‐inch strips by five‐inch lengths, place on a baking tray with a baking sheet. Pre‐set oven to 160 degrees C and bake for around 20‐30 minutes, turning two or three times. Remove from the oven, allow to cool.

Follow the snail trail PROBABLY the most popular pets are cats, dogs or birds, but finding a family with a pet snail would most likely be quite rare.

Snails are quiet, they don’t take up much space, they don’t need to be taken for a walk, and it does not cost a lot to feed and care for them.

They can be kept in a special clear terrarium made of plastic or glass.

A layer of soil is needed at the bottom of the container, approximately 4cm deep, so they can bury themselves in it and it is also where they lay their eggs.

Rather than earth from the garden, it is recommended a special terrarium earth is used, which can be bought from lo‐ cal pet stores, as garden soil

may contain parasites.

As snails do not like extreme temperatures, keep them pro‐ tected from the cold and the heat. A terracotta pot on its side gives them a good place to hide if there is sun.

These small creatures are hermaphrodites, which means they have male and female re‐ productive organs at the same time.

These molluscs are more ac‐ tive at night, when they feed and reproduce. They like to eat most green leaves, vegeta‐ bles, carrot halves, beetroot, etc.

At least once a week, the terrarium should be cleaned of all mucus and faeces, and any rotten food cleared away, as once decayed, it could be harmful to the snails.

The danger of grass spikelets for dogs THE spikelets are pods that cover the seeds of grass plants.

They have a sharp point and several rough filaments. When they pierce the skin or a natural hole, for example the ear, they act like a harpoon, they cannot go back, the filaments open like an umbrella and stick with increasing force at the point where they have been fixed.

In summer, the spikelets dry out and fall off the plant and easily adhere to the dog’s hair. They can be inserted into the skin in any area, but one of the places where they are easily in‐ serted is between the fingers, creating fistulas.

The ears are another of the places where they can be intro‐ duced, being more frequent in dogs with long hair and floppy ears. They can cause severe otitis, sometimes perforating the eardrum.

Sometimes they are aspirated and enter through the nostril causing sneezes, even with blood. It can continue moving for‐ ward and enter the lower respiratory tract reaching the lungs.

It can get into the eyes and cause conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.

If you suspect it, you should go to the vet to proceed with its extraction. Many times it requires the use of endoscopes.

by Mark Slack IF you have looked at the price of most new cars you’ll have gathered they aren’t cheap, even small hatchbacks are not necessarily in the affordable bracket. However, value for money can be had from main‐ stream manufacturers if you are looking for a family car.

Citroen’s new C4 provided an enjoyable week’s motoring and with prices starting from a smidgen

The great value Citroen C4 over €24,498 (£21,000) it rep‐ resents incredibly good value for your motoring money.

There are petrol and diesel en‐ gines, manual or automatic gears and even full electric power.

Standard equipment across the board includes 18” wheels, LED lights, Apple Car

Play and Android Auto, Blue‐ tooth, height adjustable front seats, automatic dual zone air conditioning, rear parking sen‐ sors, auto lights and wipers and heated and powered door mirrors.

My test model was the mid‐ table Shine version with prices from a still very reasonable € 2 8 , 0 1 1 (£24,010),

bringing a significant ramp up in the standard equipment stakes. Petrol power for the range comes from a 1.2‐litre, three‐cylinder turbocharged unit in two power outputs, 129hp and 153hp. In my case the 129hp engine mated to a six‐speed manual gearbox.

The first thing that strikes you about the Citroen is re‐ finement, even under hard ac‐ celeration, when three‐cylin‐ ders generally sound like an over excited lawnmower, the Citroen is remarkably quiet.

It has a feeling of quality, not something that has always been a hallmark of Citroen’s past.

A nice slick gear change and well‐chosen ratios means the C4 bowls along with little ex‐ tra effort required from the driver, and it’s a comfortable place to be seated.

It’s no hot hatch and you certainly won’t want to be hustling it along twisty roads, even though the famously comfortable Citroen suspen‐ sion produces less body roll than you might imagine.

It’s a very modern looking car with swooping lines, espe‐

cially to the rear, but access and egress remains comfort‐ able and most who saw my test car loved the looks. This is a car aimed at the family in my view, and it does a great job of providing practical, well ‐ equipped transport at an af‐ fordable price.

As with sister manufacturer Peugeot the quality has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, yet you do get a distinctly different car to any Peugeot stablemates.

I loved the C4, it has distinct echoes of Citroen’s quirky past but in a very useable, modern form in a great value package.

€1 coin to check tyres DGT Clears Up Confusion

TYRE CHECK: Manufacturers recommend changing every five years.

WITH the hot summer months almost upon us in Spain, and after a long period where ve‐ hicles have not been used so much ‐ if at all ‐ drivers should take care to check that the tyres on their vehicle are in good working order, before undertaking any journeys.

It should be normal anyway to check the tyres for any defi‐ ciencies or wear and tear, and also to ensure that they meet the minimum legal require‐ ments for driving, both for your own safety, and to avoid any unnecessary fines, be‐ cause in the event of the police stopping you and discovering

that the tread on your vehi‐ cle’s tyres is less than 1.6 mil‐ limetres in depth, the resulting fine is €200 per tyre.

There are easy ways to check your tyres without the need to visit a garage or a me‐ chanic, and the best‐known check for the tyre tread depth is by using a one euro coin (in the UK, normally a 20p coin) into the groove, and if the gold edge of the coin is not visible then the depth of the tread is within the required measure‐ ment.

However, if the gold edge of the coin does not fit into the groove then the depth is too

shallow and the tyre should be changed as soon as possible.

Of course, it is standard practice to always check the condition of your vehicle’s tyres, and even if the tread is intact, a tyre can still lose trac‐ tion as it gets older, and most tyre manufacturers will recom‐ mend you change the tyres a minimum of every five years.

If you look closely at the numbers engraved on the sides of the tyre, they will refer to the week and the date of manufacture, so it is easy for you to calculate how old they are, and whether they might need changing or not.

AS of July 1, the new V‐16 lights will begin to replace the warning triangles that drivers are currently supposed to use on the roads in the event of an accident, a device which is an orange flashing light that must be placed in the highest part of the vehicle to signal that the vehicle has been stopped on the road.

Now the General Direc‐ torate of Traffic (DGT) has cleared up the confusion that the V‐16 lights may be used instead of the triangles from July, and that they will be‐ come mandatory in 2026, af‐ ter which point, the only thing allowed to signal inci‐ dents will be this luminous beacon with geolocation.

Ana Blanco, the deputy di‐ rector of circulation of the DGT, already spoke about it a few months ago, when she commented, “people become vulnerable when they have to leave the vehicle to place the triangles,” with Jorge Ordás, the general deputy director of Mobility Management and Technology of the DGT, also

pointing to the high number of fatal accidents that oc‐ curred when drivers got out of their vehicles to place or collect the triangles.

These new beacons can be placed without leaving the vehicle when a driver suffers a breakdown, simply by low‐ ering the driver’s window and placing the device on the roof above them, where it will be secured with a magnetic an‐ chor that the beacon incorpo‐ rates.

This device will have a parabolic reflector, making it visible over a radius of one kilometre, even in low visibili‐ ty conditions, without the need for cables, since it works with a battery, as well as giv‐ ing the possibility for the driv‐ er to send a request for assis‐ tance using the device’s connection to the driver’s mobile phone.

The DGT also reminds drivers that, in the event of a breakdown or accident, the new regulations dictate ‘as a general rule’ that we will only get out of the vehicle if there

is a safe place off the road, and always on the opposite side of the flow of traffic, but, if you cannot safely exit the vehicle, then to wait for the assistance to arrive whilst sit‐ ting inside with the seat belt on.
