InTempo finally topped out

AFTER 14 years, the Spanish flag now flies from the top of Benidorm’s InTempo building.

The symbolic topping out was attended by Roberto Perez‐ Guerras, the architect responsible for Benidorm’s tallest build‐ ing and the fifth‐tallest in Spain.

Hit by the 2008 economic crisis, work on the arch‐shaped building that dominates the Benidorm skyline was halted in 2014 when almost completed.

Talking to the Spanish media, Perez‐Guerras explained that the topping out had not been possible when the last of In‐ Tempo’s 47 storeys was originally built.

“The building was surrounded by problems at that time, but we wanted to revive the tradition now that it is entirely finished,” the architect said. “This is something we deserve to celebrate.”

A disappointing day’s fishing THE Teulada-Moraira Fishing Club’s latest outing was to Section B2 of the River Jucar in neighbouring Valencia Province.

The day began with a short shower and a temperature of 16 degrees which developed into a bright and sunny 23 degrees, although the water remained cloudy with practically no flow.

There were 11 contestants with the best total weight of the day going to Jack Janssen (6.4 kilos), followed by Frank Povey (6.1 kilos) while Steve Arnott won best fish of the day, with a 1.5-kilo carp.

There were three dry nets and just 24 fish caught with a total weight of 29 kilos.

“Overall, it was a bad day’s fishing,” said Jeff Richards, the Teulada-Moraira Fishing Club’s secretary.

Shortly after the marriage, police say, the defendants began manipulating the victim to make financial arrangements for them including handing over €30,000 in cash for a purported property purchase.

Police say the scammers later took €70,000 from the elderly man’s current account through a fraudulent electronic transfer last June. The money was deposited into an account to cover the reservation deposit and subsequent acquisition of the property.

That sale didn’t complete.

Police say the three accused, a man, his wife and son also disposed of €70,000 in various bank accounts.

Two of the accused have been handed over to the Investigating Court.

Heavyweight THE Partido Popular party, in opposition on Villajoyosa Council, criticised the town hall for charging €100 to retrieve towed-away vehicles of up to two tons and €600 for those that weigh more. The second price was abusive, and the €100 fee should apply to all vehicles, the party maintained.

Custody blow A BENIDORM judge rejected a local man’s application for temporary shared custody of Bimba, a Bichon Maltese, with his ex-partner while the case is resolved. He complained that she no longer allows Bimba to accompany their daughter on visits, although he bought the dog and paid all its expenses.

Kayak trips ALBIR’S beaches concessionary and Alfaz Town Hall are organising free, two-hour kayak trips for 16-to-35s this summer.

Arctic voyage for 5 FIVE women who have conquered cancer will sail more than 4,600 kilometres to the Arctic circle in September.

The five were chosen to take part in the seventh edition of the Reto Pelayo Vida (Pelayo Life Challenge), following a tough selection process.

When September comes they will leave Vigo (Galicia), making for the 66th Parallel North, the point where the Atlantic and Arctic oceans meet.

They recently visited the Club Nautico yacht club in

They explained that they will be helping to crew the boat dur-

It will be an endurance test for the women who have already shown that they could defeat cancer and can complete another type of voyage in extreme and aggressive conditions.

This is the seventh edition of the international challenge organised by the Pelayo insurance company that passes on a message of hope to other women with cancer.

Legion d’Honneur for Aircrew Association’s John Russell THE Aircrew Association Costa Blanca re‐ cently held a unique, four‐element, function in Benitachell.

The occasion included the award of Chevalier de L’Ordre National de la Le‐ gion d’Honneur to John Russell, the As‐ sociation’s most ‘mature’ member.

It was also time to bid farewell to Henry Horth, the Aircrew Association’s president of five years, while appointing the new president, Tom Brown and en‐

tertaining the Association’s ladies.

John Russell was presented with his award before the lunch that followed by the Assistant Defence Attache from the French Embassy in Madrid, Captain Xavier de Cervoisier.

Prior to pinning the award, Captain de Cervoisier made an impressive speech in English, highlighting the many opera‐ tional sorties and other activities in which John had participated during the

Second World War, contributing to the liberation of France.

This was a special occasion including a mixture of joy, at the presentation of John Russell’s Legion d’Honneur and sadness at the departure of Henry Horth.

All in all, it was another memorable day for the diary of the Aircrew Associa‐ tion Costa Blanca, all involved agreed af‐ terwards.

Fifty members recent‐ ly went on a day trip to a Bodega near Valencia and information will shortly be published on forthcoming trips currently being arranged for Ju‐ ly and September.

The U3A Marina Baixa meets at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi at 11am on the fourth Monday of every month except in August and Decem‐ ber.

THE central government confirmed that the Im‐ serso subsidised holidays for pensioners will go ahead, with arrivals scheduled for October on‐ wards.

Toni Mayor, president of the regional hote‐ liers’ association Hosbec, expressed disappoint‐ ment with the announcement, as the sector had hoped for an earlier start to the holidays.

Far from the hoped‐for “notable increase,” places on this year’s Imserso holidays have been reduced by more than 100,000 to a na‐ tionwide 816,029 for the coming campaign.

Of these, 180,000 places will be allocated to the Valencian Community, most of them for Benidorm hotels.

Organising the holidays was due to be put out to tender at the end of June, with bids re‐ viewed in July and contracts awarded in August although this, too, has set alarm bells ringing.

Any hitches would prevent hotels from wel‐ coming Imserso tourists in October, Hosbec warned and it would take only one appeal from a rejected bidder to hold up the first ar‐ rivals.

Not so many sunbeds on the local beaches BENIDORM Town Hall has now prepared the layout of its principal beaches for the high season.

“We began working on plans for the beaches from the moment the pandemic began, developing the successful marked‐ out system we introduced in June 2020 which can be adapted to the circumstances and needs of the moment,” Perez said.

The concessionary company will main‐ tain the level of the lifesaving, beach‐clean‐ ing and accessible beach services set out in its contract, announced Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez.

The number of zones reserved for the concessionary’s sunbeds have been re‐ duced and the daily maximum of sunbeds for hire has been cut from 6,315 to 3,500, announced Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez.

Play the Benidorm game DURING lockdown, Derek Watters decid‐ ed to send Benidorm to all those who could no longer go there themselves.

With time on his hands, he was in‐ spired to invent a boardgame for all the family where players start out as tourists, find jobs, work as ex‐ tras or become a TV celebrity.

The game has ele‐ ments of Monopoly but Snakes and Lad‐ ders, too, and players can either end up liv‐ ing the dream or sleeping on the Lev‐ ante beach.

Derek’s Benidorm‐ based events, promo‐ tions and advertising company saw its in‐ come go to zero on March 14 when all bars and restaurants had to close.

With very little money ‐ €300 to be exact ‐ Derek devot‐ ed his time and ener‐ gy to designing and producing the board‐ game.

“Without the friends who have as‐ sisted me in different ways, I wouldn’t be here today. Although I did most of it on my own, I couldn’t have done it without their help along the way,” he declared.

Pego rockers still rocking

NO‐ONE could accuse Chris Clark of not integrating into Spanish life.

He plays drums for Trilogy, a Pego‐based rock group that started performing in the 1970s and is still going strong.

Not that Chris belonged to it then, he explained to the Euro Weekly News, as he joined Freddy, Juan and Ignis in 2019 after a long, non‐musi‐ cal career.

“I was looking for a group to play with and they were looking for a drummer,” Chris said.

The band write most of their own songs, mainly in Valenciano, and they have played together for 50 years since they were kids.

But they were always short of a drummer.

Some didn’t like Trilogy’s music, some liked it but moved on and oth‐ ers ‐ unlike Chris ‐ weren’t settled enough to depend on.

Interested though we were to hear about Trilogy, we also wanted to know more about Chris and his life before settling in Muro de Al‐ coy.

He told us that he was brought up in a small village in the Fens.

“I was badly educated and des‐ tined for a life of crime,” he happily confessed. Instead he joined the Royal Navy at 15 serving for 17 years, mostly in the submarine ser‐ vice.

On leaving, he continued to travel the world, installing new lighthous‐ es and converting old systems to so‐

lar power before going into business for himself.

“Married twice and bankrupted twice,” he told us cheerfully, but he eventually got the formula right and made some money, coming to Spain in 2007 when he was 56.

Since then, Chris has written the semi‐biographical HMS Hermes and the Virgin Sailor and a novel, How to steal a submarine. Both are avail‐ able on Amazon.

Meanwhile, Trilogy recently played a gig in Calpe, their first since lockdown, although pre‐pan‐ demic they performed regularly at local events, fiestas and during the Fallas.

So watch this space, because there are sure to be more.

Benidorm beach wars begin again SUMMER after summer, the booking of beach bed spaces causes untold hassle on Benidorm’s prime shoreline.

The city council is determined to put an end to the habit where early risers book beach spaces using towels ‐ then disappear until later in the day ‐ leaving frustrated beach attendants to try and stamp out the bad habit.

Police officers are now getting involved in the towel turf wars.

Lorenzo Martinez, a local councillor, said police officers “go every morning to check the situation” or at the request of someone who wants to reserve space on the beach.

“If it is found that these belongings are not occupied, they are re‐ moved, because this is permitted by the regulations, and they take away the unattended property. We must find a balance for the normal use of the beach,” the councillor said.

But despite all the warnings, the situation repeats itself every day with bathers who get up early every morning to get a good place by the shoreline to which they do not return until a few hours later.

And by 7am, most spaces are already taken by the towel hog‐ gers, with the Rincon de Loix area, in Torrejo and some specific sec‐ tions of Levante being particularly bad.

“You have to get off early if you want to be in front,” one wom‐ an said. She stays when she leaves her things but says many others do not return “until they have breakfast or go shopping.”

Police nab pair on the run NATIONAL POLICE in Alicante have arrested two fugitives wanted by the authorities in the Netherlands and France under Europol warrants for co‐ caine smuggling and other nar‐ cos offences. The pair are in custody pending extradition proceedings.

A 56‐year‐old Dutch man was arrested in the Alicante Province town of El Campello in mid‐June, on the run from Dutch authorities where he was sentenced to 1,567 days in prison as part of a gang in‐ volved in a large‐scale drug dis‐ tribution scheme in 2013. The gang smuggled cocaine inside bananas.

National Police also de‐ tained a 39‐year‐old French woman, accused of belonging to a criminal organisation dedi‐ cated to trafficking cocaine in Paris and with links to Guyana, Suriname and the Nether‐ lands.

She was on the run accused of driving suspects who were smuggling cocaine in their bowels.

New VAT rules for online shopping NEW EU‐wide Value‐Added Tax (VAT) rules for online shopping came into force this week as part of efforts to ensure a more level playing field for all businesses. The new rules also aim to simplify cross‐border e‐commerce and introduce greater transparency for EU shoppers when it comes to pricing and consumer choice.

The new rules came into force on Wednesday July 1 and will affect online sellers and marketplaces/platforms both inside and outside the EU, postal operators and couriers, customs and tax administrations, as well as consumers.

Under the current system, goods imported into the EU valued at less than €22 by non‐EU companies are exempt from VAT. As from July 1, this exemption is now lifted.

Currently, e‐commerce sellers need to have a VAT registration in each Member State in which they have a turnover above a certain overall threshold, which varies from country to country. From July 1, these dif‐ ferent thresholds will be replaced by one common EU threshold of €10,000 above which the VAT must be paid in the Member State where the goods are delivered.

The EU’s VAT system was last updated in 1993 and has not kept pace with the rise in cross‐border e‐commerce.

Javid promises lockdown will end

NEW UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid has pledged to lift lockdown by July 19 while Labour has branded his “hapless” predecessor Matt Hancock “the stupi‐ dest man on earth.”

Javid said his task as Britain’s health tsar “is to help return the economic and cultural life that makes this country so great” but he warned the Delta vari‐ ant is causing a “narrowing of the race between the virus and the vaccine.”

“In truth, no date we choose comes with zero risk for Covid. We cannot simply eliminate it. We have to learn to live with it,” he said on June 28.

“Make no mistake, the restrictions on our freedoms must come to an end.

We owe it to the British people not to wait a moment longer than we need to. With the numbers heading in the right direction, July 19 remains our tar‐ get date,” he added in his first address

O2 re-introduces roaming fees for Brits LGBT rates highest in Spain BRITISH mobile phone compa‐ ny, O2 has said it will re‐intro‐ duce roaming charges for cus‐ tomers who use their phones while travelling in the EU. A charge of £3.50 will come into force on August 2 on each gigabyte (GB) used over 25GB. Roaming charges were scrapped in the EU in 2017 and O2 said after Brexit it did not intend to re‐introduce them.

The EU scrapped roaming charges across its member states in 2017 after the Euro‐ pean Commission said that they amounted to a “market failure.”

In an email to customers, O2 said, “As your monthly UK data allowance is over 25GB, you can still use your data in our Europe Zone. But it’s now sub‐ ject to a Roaming Limit of 25GB. Once you’ve reached this limit, you’ll be charged an additional cost of £3.50/GB.” A spokesperson for O2 said, “Less than 1 per cent of our Pay Monthly customers reach anywhere near 25GB during occasional travel to Europe.

“If a customer’s UK monthly data allowance is over 25GB, from August 2 they will have a Roaming Limit of 25GB when

“This means they can use up to 25GB of their allowance at no extra cost ‐ we’ll text them if they get close to the limit, and again if they reach it.

Euthanasia law takes effect SPAIN’S new law on euthanasia took ef‐ fect on June 25, allowing the chronically and terminally ill to end their own life.

The law allows regional control commit‐ tees to review and authorise end‐of‐life decisions.

When a chronically or terminally ill pa‐ tient makes a request to end their life, a doctor must inform the patient about their diagnosis, therapeutic possibilities and expected results, as well as about pos‐ sible palliative care, making sure that they understand the information that is provid‐ ed.

After that, the patient must again con‐ firm their intention to end their own life.

After that second request, there should

be a new meeting between a new doctor and the patient. It will be this doctor who will authorise the process.

They are required to ask the opinion of a doctor trained in the ‘field of patholo‐ gies suffered by the patient’ but who is not from the ‘same team as the doctor.’

Likewise, the regional evaluation com‐ mission must choose two experts, one be‐ ing a lawyer, to evaluate the case.

Both experts must agree on their deci‐ sion. If not, the full committee would make the final call. Health professionals directly involved in this provision ‘may ex‐ ercise their right to conscientious objec‐ tion’ but those objections have to be ‘stat‐ ed in advance and in writing.’

In 2019, 18 million British tourists visited Spain and account‐ ed for 21.6 per cent of all arrivals, with some five million of those vis‐ iting the Balearic Islands. The bat‐ tered Spanish travel and tourism sector is counting on Brits to deliv‐ er a much‐needed cash injection, as are British airlines who have laid on thousands of new flights to the Balearics since they were added to the green list.

HERE’S a shocker: Endesa fraud inspectors are beefing up against meter fiddlers and power scam‐ mers. And the recent hike in power rates is giving the inspec‐ tors’ fight new momentum.

Jose Antonio Franco is head of Endesa’s energy recovery depart‐

ment, and his team are responsi‐ ble for fighting fraud and to en‐ sure that “all the energy that en‐ ters the system ends up being billed.”

“The detection rate for these losses has varied considerably over time,” Franco said. “We have

evolved technically and in recent years we have doubled our best success rate. Fraud is now detect‐ ed in one out of every two inspec‐ tions, which is 25 per cent.”

“I am self‐taught, I started in da‐ ta science in 2012, on my own,” Tejedor says. “I was curious and I trained on platforms, many free, where there is a lot of high‐quality content available,” he says, adding Endesa saw the possibilities in fighting fraud.

Franco says that no matter how robust the fraudster is, they look for a way to defraud.

“Before, with the old‐fashioned mechanical counter meters, it was very obvious, very simple, fraud was done by oneself, or by a brother‐in‐law, but now it is done by someone who is prepared, he has become professional, and you even find integrated circuits inside the meters,” he says.

Child left alone as mum partied NATIONAL POLICE in Sevilla have arrested a 24-year-old woman who abandoned her child so that she could go drinking.

Police say neighbours found the seven-year-old wandering the common areas of a block of flats in Calle Carlos Marx at 12.40am on Thursday June 24.

Neighbours reported that the girl and her mother and uncle had been living in the complex for about three years.

The neighbours told police the girl didn’t seem to attend school regularly, was left alone often and had bruising on her legs. One told officers she sometimes bathed the girl and fed her when she was hungry.

The mother was located by police at around 2am in the Gran Plaza on a number provided by the landlord. Police say she left work at three in the afternoon and said she needed to go for a drink to relax.

The girl has now been put into foster care.

A BRITISH mum, her husband and their one‐year‐old daughter are unaccounted for after the collapse of a multi‐storey apart‐ ment block in Miami on Thurs‐ day June 24.

At least a dozen people are confirmed dead after the build‐ ing partially collapsed at around 1.30am on Thursday local time.

Miami‐Dade mayor Daniella Levine Cava updated the num‐ bers after officials said 150 peo‐ ple were unaccounted for.

Some 102 people are known to have escaped the disaster and are safe.

“The building is literally pan‐ caked,” Surfside mayor Charles Burkett said. “That is heart‐ breaking because it doesn’t mean, to me, that we are going to be as successful as we want‐ ed to be in finding people alive.”

Bhavna Patel, a 38‐year‐old British and US citizen, and her 42‐year‐old husband Vishal Pa‐ tel, and their one‐year‐old daughter Aishani Patel are among those unaccounted for.

Some clarified that only if it is under the right circumstances and pointed out that it must be a decision made by the person

Spain found guilty THE European Court for Jus‐ tice confirmed on June 24 that Spain needs to do more to protect Doñana National Park, home to one of Eu‐ rope’s largest wetlands.

The enormous park in the southern region of Andalucia spreads across Cadiz, Huelva and Sevilla and boasts a di‐ verse ecosystem of lagoons, marshlands, scrub woodland, beaches and sand dunes.

It is home to fallow deer, wild boars, badgers and en‐ dangered species including the Spanish imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx.

It is also on the migratory route of millions of birds each year and the Court has found that farmers are illegally building wells which drain off much of the water and the Spanish Government has al‐ lowed water to be diverted

50 held in immigration sting NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 50 people over the illegal entry of Dominican citizens into Spain through Adolfo Suárez‐Madrid Barajas Airport. The scam involved using impersonation by moving through people who had similar physical characteristics to avoid border controls.

At least 61 people have been detected who were trying to access Spanish territory in this way. They reportedly paid amounts close to €3,000 to participate in the scheme. Police have arrested 46 in Barcelona and another

four in Madrid.

The investigation began with the detection at airports in the Dominican Republic and Madrid, of a greater number people than usual who were trying to enter Spain using Spanish documentation such as National Identity Cards, Spanish passport and residence cards along with Dominican passports. None were the actu‐ al real people.

The investigation has been ongoing for more than a year.

Warning over email fraud A WARNING has been released of a new mali‐ cious email campaign pretending to be from Vodafone.

The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), based in Spain’s Leon has discovered a new dodgy email which tries to install malware on devices. The phishing email pretends to be from Vodafone.

The phishing email contains two links. The links are supposed to take you to an invoice which has not been paid, but in fact they take you to file meant to infect your device. This is a form of mal‐ ware.

If you have received one of these emails but on‐ ly clicked on the link to download the file you could still be safe. In this case it is essential that you find the file and delete it. The phishing email should then be deleted or sent to the trash too.

If you have clicked on the link, downloaded the

MALWARE: Your device may be infected. file and opened or executed the file then you could be in trouble and your device might be in‐ fected. In this case users should run a scan of their device with up‐to‐date anti‐virus software.

Mechanic crushed by lorry A MECHANIC in Sevilla who had been working underneath the cab of a lorry changing a wheel was crushed to death on Thursday June 24 when the jack gave way.

The 54‐year‐old man from Lebrija was dead by the time emergency services arrived on the scene.

The accident happened around 4.45pm in a lorry park‐

ing area at a roundabout on the A‐471 road into Lebrija. A co‐worker who was helping him change the tyre as the jack failed was unable to help the victim as the lorry fell on him.

Brit licences deadline extended THE Spanish Government has agreed to extend the deadline to exchange a British driving li‐ cence for a Spanish one from June 30 to October 31.

Negotiations are also under‐ way between Madrid and Lon‐ don to try and reach ‘mutual recognition’ for holders of British

driving licences in Spain and those using Spanish driving li‐ cences in the UK. “We know that many of you have been anxious that the recognition of UK driving li‐ cences was set to end on 30 June,” the UK embassy in Madrid posted on its Facebook

And on June 24, Spain broke its previously set record for administrating the largest number of vaccines in one day on June 24 with more than 680,000 people getting a jab.

THE UK’s Ambassador to Spain says he’s proud of the record of service provided by the Armed Forces and believes that their dedication to duty underscores their importance to British nationals liv‐ ing in Spain.

Ambassador Hugh Elliott said that as envoy to Spain he wears many hats and is involved in charitable works across the community, but that “one of the roles I am most proud to fulfil is that of Patron of the Royal British Legion in Spain.”

“As we celebrate not only Armed Forces Day, but the centenary of the Le‐ gion, I wanted to reflect a little on what it means to me and why its work is so im‐ portant to UK nationals in Spain,” he said in a press release.

“On Saturday I was honoured to at‐ tend an event in Orihuela, alongside serv‐ ing officers, veterans, families, reservists and volunteers, to mark this double com‐ memoration,” he said, adding that just four weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be able to visit HMS Kent, while she made a port visit to Alicante ‐ a visible demonstra‐ tion of the close cooperation between the British Armed Forces and our Allies.

Spanish train maker settles HS2 claim SPANISH train maker Talgo and Britain’s HS2 have reached an out of court set‐ tlement after the Spanish firm accused HS2 of botching a procurement process. How‐ ever, the Department of Transport will not reveal what Talgo settled for or how

much legal proceedings cost.

The contract was initially billed as worth £2.8 billion.

Talgo launched its legal challenge after losing out in its bid to provide HS2 with rolling stock.

A hearing had been set for July but HS2 confirmed on

June 28 it had reached an out of court settlement with the Madrid‐listed manufacturer.

“Following the mutual res‐ olution of proceedings be‐ tween HS2 and Talgo, HS2 is grateful for Talgo’s participa‐ tion in the rolling stock pro‐ curement and wishes Talgo all the best with its future en‐ deavours, both in the UK and internationally,” a spokes‐ man for HS2 said.

“HS2 looks forward to an‐ nouncing its contract award decision for Britain’s new high‐speed trains in due course.”

When complete, the high‐ speed rail line will link Lon‐ don and Birmingham in un‐ der an hour, and may begin service before 2030.

GIMENO: The search is on.

THE high‐tech oceanographic vessel Angeles Alvariño is now close to completing its first month of deep‐sea searching of the ocean bed off the coast of Tenerife. The task now is fo‐ cused on locating Anna and Tomas Gimeno, after having al‐ ready recovered the lifeless body of six‐year‐old Olivia.

Local media announced a few days ago the discovery of a strange mass next to a metallic object, but it is still unknown whether or not it is linked to the case.

is key in the investigation since thanks to its findings it has been possible to reconstruct the events and learn more about the last steps of Tomas Gimeno and his daughters, who disap‐ peared on April 27.

Equipped with a side‐scan sonar and robot, the Angeles Al‐ variño has found several objects including a duvet cover and div‐ ing bottle, now known to be owned by Tomas Gimeno.

Within days it located two sports bags, together with the anchor of the boat at a depth of 1,000 metres. In one bag was

the body of the eldest daughter, Olivia, while the other was ripped open and completely empty.

The investigation is also fo‐ cused on locating an eight‐kilo lead belt, which is suspected of having been used by the girls’ father and Olivia’s alleged mur‐ derer, to sink and commit their bodies to the bottom of the sea.

According to the hypothesis of the team investigating the case, the lead diving belt and the two oxygen cylinders were used to cause the death of his daughters.

Gijon man faked cancer to dupe lover

NATIONAL POLICE officers in Gijon have arrested a 56‐year‐ old man, accused of pretending to have been the victim of a kidnapping attempt, inventing the story in an effort to stop his girlfriend from leaving him.

Police say he first sent anonymous threatening letters to his partner to make her believe that she was in danger, and then pretended to have been kidnapped by a gang to try and force him to leave the relationship.

Investigating officers say he also duped her into believing that he had terminal cancer in a bid to stop her from leaving him.

Eventually, the man admitted to the police that he had in‐ vented his story, with their investigations into him finding that he had never been treated for any serious pathology. He was charged, released and a trial is pending.

100 Griffon vultures poisoned WILDLIFE officers, environmental and nature specialists along with police are investigating the mass poisoning of some 100 Griffon vulture birds near Salamanca in the past week.

At least half have died from the poisoning which authorities believe was deliberate. The poisoning came to light on June 23 in the municipality of Monterrubio de Armuña bear Salamanca.

Also found were a black vulture and a black kite, but until the results of necropsies on the dead birds come back, officials won’t know exactly what killed them.

The surviving birds have been taken to the Las Dunas Wildlife Reception Centre, also in Salamanca, and to the Wild Animals Recovery Centre in Valladolid. Officials say they don’t know how many of the birds might survive.

A citizen raised the alarm and environmental officers of the Junta de Castilla y Leon along with Seprona police, went to inspect the reported site. The birds had been feasting on sheep carrion. Some 20 birds were present and still alive, but the officers were unable to capture them.

Gibraltar legalises abortion G I B R A LT A R w i l l e a s e i t s law on abortion which was the toughest in Europe.

T he result of the referendum, held on Thursday J une 24, now means that women will no longer face life in prison if they have an abortion.

Sixty-two per cent of Gibraltar’s population voted in favour of relaxing the law while 36 per cent opposed it.

Under the new rules, women will be allowed have an abortion if their mental or physical health is at risk or when foetuses have fatal physical defects. The procedure however must take place

within 12 weeks of conception.

New laws will be implemented within 28 days, said Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, a supporter of the ‘Yes’ campaign.

Counselling and support services “to ensure that any woman who calls at the doors of the Gibraltar Health Authority believing that she needs an abortion will have the support that she needs,” he added.

“Well, today, Gibraltar voted Yes. Yes for human rights. Yes for women and girls. Yes for trusting doctors and health care professionals. Yes for choice.

Yes for compassion and

empathy. Y es for healthcare and care. Yes for reproductive rights. Yes for female bodily autonomy.

And yes for abortion that is at home, safe and legal,” said Isobel Ellul, spokeswoman for the Gibraltar for Yes when the referendum results were announced.

Abortion is legal in Spain in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, and the procedure can legally be performed in England, Wales and Scotland before 24 weeks. In some cases, such as if the mother’s life is at risk, they can be carried out after 24 weeks.

The approval for his Virgin Galactic rocket plane was granted on June 25 by the US Federal Aviation Adminis‐ tration, updating his existing licence which only permitted test flights.

The entrepreneur has around 600 people already eager to take a flight to the height of 90km, to experience the weightlessness and see the cur‐ vature of the Earth.

They will be sent up from a space‐

port in America’s New Mexico Desert now following a successful test out‐ ing for the plane which was conduct‐ ed on May 22.

Data collected on the flight on May 22 satisfied the federal agency that all milestones had been met for technical development.

“We’re incredibly pleased with the results of our most recent test flight, which achieved our stated flight test objectives,” CEO of Virgin Galactic, Michael Colglaziern said.

The company plans its fully crewed test flight this summer. It is likely that the flight will see Sir Richard travel to the edge of space, as proof of the safety and readiness for the commercial service.

£5 coin to honour Prince Philip A NEW coin to commemorate the life of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has been revealed. A special edition £5 coin features an original por‐ trait of The Duke to celebrate his ‘remarkable’ life.

UK limits junk food ads THE UK government is to impose a ban on TV advertisements for junk food before 9pm.

Foods that are high in sugar, fat and salt will not be adver‐ tised on TV before 9pm, in a drive to tackle obesity. The types of products that will be affected are burgers, fast food, cakes, soft drinks, pizzas, ice cream, chips and chocolate.

The government will also impose new rules for online pro‐ motions, however, firms that sell junk food will still be able to run websites. A complete ban on online adverts was consid‐ ered last year but was scaled back after consultation.

These new TV advertising restrictions have been announced as Boris Johnson explains that obesity affects over a quarter of the adult population in the UK and tackling this health issue is now one of the priorities for the government.

However, food companies disagree with the decision and say that a complete ban on junk food advertising would be dispro‐ portionate.

From the end of 2022, any adverts for junk food, including yoghurts, chicken nuggets and microwave meals, will be banned before 9pm and after 5.30am. Ads for meals that are considered “less healthy” will also be banned during those hours.

Four other horses also needed immediate care and were pro‐ vided with proper forage and water. The others were checked and were found to be thirsty and hungry.

The owner faces charges for not providing the animals with adequate hygienic, nutritional and veterinary care, the Guardia Civil said.

Police, animal care and veterinary staff raided the property on June 17 after learning of the horses’ poor condition.

The Guardia Civil have previously advocated a public cam‐ paign highlighting the mistreatment and abandonment of do‐ mestic animals. They urge anyone who witnesses abuse of ani‐ mals to immediately report it to authorities.

By July 19, all those aged 40 and over and the clinically extremely vulnerable, who received their first dose by mid‐May, will have been offered their second dose.

“Two doses of a Covid‐19 vac‐ cine are absolutely vital in ensur‐ ing the fullest possible protection the jabs have to offer ‐ it’s extraor‐ dinary that three in five people have now been vaccinated with both jabs,” said Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi.

Minimum wage hike on cards? Banned from France

SPAIN’S President Pedro Sanchez and Labour and Social Economy Minister Yolanda Di‐ az were due to meet this week to consider hiking the mini‐ mum wage by 10 per cent.

The meeting follows a report from the Advisory Commission for the Analysis of the Minimum Wage that recommended the 10 per cent hike on June 18.

If approved, the increase could see the minimum wage in Spain rise from €950 per month to €1,045 per month.

The government faces pres‐ sure to approve the increase not only because they face re‐ election in 2023, but because of growing public anger against in‐ creasing living expenses and soaring electricity bills.

Diaz said she is in favour of raising the minimum wage by 10 per cent, but that it is up to the government to decide. “Our position is known, but the gov‐ ernment will decide,” she said on Thursday June 24.

A third of the homes for sale on Idealista during the month of April had been on the market for less than a month, the company said.

that would bring it closer to the EU. In 2014 Russia an‐ nexed Crimea and has en‐ couraged separatists in east‐ ern Ukraine.

The June 21 agreement for the UK to bolster Ukraine’s naval capabilities was signed

by Minister for Defence Pro‐ curement Jeremy Quin and First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin representing the UK and the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Oleksandr Myro‐ niuk.

“The UK and Ukraine have a close defence relationship, and we continue to strength‐ en this partnership to help

deter shared threats,” said Mr Quin, the minister respon‐ sible for naval procurement.

The deal is likely to have angered Moscow as it in‐ cludes the sale of missiles which can be integrated into existing Ukrainian naval and military platforms.

Two days later, on June 23, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed a coastguard vessel had shot at HMS Defender because it had breached Rus‐ sia’s territorial water. The UK however swiftly denied an in‐ cident had taken place and said Russia was conducting regular exercises and did not fire at the war ship.

Ryanair furious over digital certs RYANAIR launched a blistering attack on Ireland’s Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan who has not yet reopened Ireland to air travel. The low‐cost airline, Ireland’s biggest carrier, on Wednes‐ day June 23 called on Minister Ryan to clarify why, when 18 other EU countries are now issuing the Digital Green Cert, he has failed to do so for Ireland’s vaccinated citizens.

British visitors arriving by air must quarantine for 10 days, but the airline pointed out that if they were to fly into Belfast instead, they can drive across the border from Northern Ireland with no restrictions whatsoever.

“With less than 50 Covid patients in our hospitals, and less than 20 in our ICUs, Ireland continues to delay the recovery of avi‐ ation and tourism due to the bogus and non‐medical fears about a Delta variant in the UK which is not resistant to vaccines,” Ryanair’s Eddie Wilson said. “It is time for Minister Ryan to wake up and roll out the EU Digital Cert at least for those Irish citizens who have been double vaccinated, and this can be switched on today! McAfee complained THE prison in Spain where John McAfee was found dead in a suspected suicide apparently serves ‘stale bread and cold hot dogs’ according to the now de‐ ceased software pioneer.

McAfee was discovered dead in his cell in the Barcelona Sant Esteve Sesrovires prison on Wednesday June 23, and it ap‐ pears that he committed sui‐ cide. According to local media reports in May two inmates killed themselves at the prison.

McAfee’s cause of death is un‐ der investigation.

McAfee had entered the prison in October after he had been caught at Barcelona air‐ port. He had been wanted by US authorities for tax evasion when

Turtle dove shooting banned AN estimated 900,000 turtle doves are shot by hunters each year in Spain, which has led to almost all of the Spanish au‐ tonomous communities placing a one‐year ban on the shooting of the birds.

The turtle doves fly each year across Spain in spring and autumn migrating from sub‐Saharan Africa.

In Britain, the turtle dove is an endan‐ gered species, with reports claiming that there are as few as 2,000 pairs of them left, and globally, the species is also in dan‐ ger of extinction.

Scientists have urged that a four‐year shooting ban be put in place to cover their entire route that also includes Portugal, Malta, Italy and France.

Experts say that if turtle dove hunting was halted in Western Europe, their num‐ bers would increase by about 5 per cent each year. As well as shooters, the birds al‐ so face threats from agricultural intensifi‐ cation that reduces their food availability.

They normally thrive on the seeds from annual wildflowers that have been virtual‐ ly eradicated by modern herbicides.

“This is a really positive step from Span‐ ish authorities because Spain is a key coun‐ try on the migration route of the species,” said Dr Andy Evans from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

“Hunting exacerbates the problems for these birds caused by agricultural changes, but both problems need to be tackled in order to save the turtle dove. By stopping hunting, turtle doves are given a better chance to recover.”

Spain’s Ornithological Society said that putting a stop to shooting wasn’t enough and that the country should add the bird to its list of endangered species.

The prison has also housed other well‐known felons includ‐ ing a former Barcelona official.

When speaking of the prison

McAfee had considered it to be “the Hilton” in comparison to prisons in the United States, but he still managed to complain about the food that the prison served.

Last November, shortly after McAfee’s arrest he compared the Spanish prison to a five‐star hotel in a letter to his wife. “Life in Spanish prisons is like the Hilton compared to the abject surrealism and dehumanisation of American prisons,” he said.

“Here I am treated as a human being instead of a number.'”

After his arrest McAfee had been initially held at the Brians I prison complex, but was later transferred to Brians 2, where he was at the time of his death.

Madrid terminals reopen in July BARAJAS AIRPORT: Things slowly returning to normal.

IN yet another sign that things are slowly returning to normal, Aena has announced that it will be reopening terminals T2 and T3 in Madrid’s Bara‐ jas Airport this coming July 1. The ter‐ minals have been adapted for coron‐ avirus and the health and safety of passengers.

With the reopening of these two ter‐ minals, it means that Madrid’s airport will be fully operational once again, and back to pre‐pandemic functionali‐ ty. AENA recommends passengers who plan to travel in the next few days to check first with their airline, because if their return flight is on the same day, July 1 or later, the arrival terminal

could be different from the one used in the outbound flight.

Under the coronavirus conditions, passengers will only be allowed to en‐ ter through the signposted entrances, and only passengers with a valid flight ticket or boarding pass, or those ac‐ companying children or passengers who require special assistance, are al‐ lowed to enter the terminal buildings.

Parking areas A, B, and C of the P2 level will be operational again, along with the express surface parking, and from July 1, the transit bus service will stop at T3, maintaining a frequency of every 10 minutes during the busiest hours.

Spain extends health care for cross-border workers THE government has approved extending health care for cross‐border workers who work in Gibraltar but live in Spain. The measure is being extended for four months until the end of October, Madrid said June 22.

The extension will allow officials from both the UK and Spain to continue talks on issues arising from Brexit.

Juan Lozano, the president of Campo de Gibraltar, said he’s satisfied with the extension of health care for the cross‐border workers and other measures such as recognising the British driving licence and the provision for degrees from universities and higher education centres and other studies.

“The correct decisions adopted by the government of Spain mean that people … regard‐ less of their nationality ‐ Spanish and British ‐ are not affected in this negotiation period in which we are currently immersed,” Lozano said.

He expressed appreciation for “the involvement and firm commitment made by the gov‐ ernment of Spain to the Campo de Gibraltar and its citizens.”

71% more tourists in May

THE number of airline passen‐ gers arriving in Spain from inter‐ national airports grew by 71 per cent in May ‐ the largest number recorded since August 2020.

Some 1,396,549 travellers ar‐

rived in Spain last month, but the figure is still 84.2 per cent lower than the number of arrivals in May 2019, according to the Spanish tourist board, Tures‐ pana.

Hospital failed to treat TB patient

A COURT in Sevilla has ordered the Andalucian Health Service (SAS) to pay €20,400 to the family of a 69-year-old woman who died in October 2018 from tuberculosis that was not diagnosed, nor treated.

The Patient Ombudsman said that the poor medical treatment occurred at Reina Sofía Hospital in Cordoba and dated back to January 2017 when the patient was treated with medication for her Crohn-type inflammatory bowel disease.

The immunosuppressant drug, however, has the ability to awaken bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

Some 15 per cent of Spaniards, especially those over 40, are unaware that they have latent tuberculosis. Medical staff are supposed to carry out a tuberculin test, which must be repeated, to ensure that the person does not have latent TB before administering the drug.

The test was not repeated and a CT scan that showed the TB infection also went unnoticed.

“Although we are still far from pre‐pandemic levels, the data suggest that we have begun a gradual recovery in mobility, which will increase with the ad‐ vance of vaccinations, the lifting of restrictions and the implemen‐ tation of measures such as the EU Covid digital certificate,” Reyes Maroto, the Minister of In‐ dustry, Commerce and Tourism, said on Wednesday June 23.

The largest number of passen‐ gers arrived from Germany with 407,431 travellers or 29.2 per cent of the total; there were 191,035 French passengers and 98,329 passengers from Switzer‐ land.

The Balearic Islands was the main destination with 386,247 international passengers arriving at its airports followed by the Community of Madrid with 351,647 travellers; Catalonia with 196,466 passengers; the Canary Islands with 159,292; Andalucia had 152,292 international ar‐ rivals and Valencia had 136,806.

Adolfo Suarez Madrid‐Barajas and Palma de Mallorca regis‐ tered the most activity.

A 35-year-old man from Dom Hermanas who was admitted to Sevilla’s Virgen del Rocio Hospital on June 12 was thought to have the virus that caused seven deaths and 77 serious cases in Andalucia last year.

The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The patient was admitted and then referred to the ICU of the Sevilla hospital after confirming that he was positive for coronavirus. Two days later, he began to suffer ‘neuromeningeal’ symptoms that can occur in Covid-19 cases. He tested positive for meningoencephalitis - an inflammation of the brain - and there were indications it was brought on by West Nile virus.

Later tests, however, showed that West Nile virus wasn’t present in the man’s system.

Health officials say that false positives with viruses are not strange, and in this case, the man’s positive tests for coronavirus clouded the testing process.

Aid workers slain Cadiz’s mega marina to open in 2023

THREE workers from the NGO Doctors Without Borders organisation have been found murdered in the volatile Tigray region of Ethiopia.

One of the victims is Maria Hernandez, a 35-year-old Spanish woman from Madrid who was operating as an MSF emergency coordinator in the region.

Found along with Ms Hernandez, were two Ethiopian men, 31-year-old Yohannes Halefom Reda, a coordinator assistant, and a 31-year-old driver, Tedros Gebremariam.

“We lost contact with them, and the car they were travelling in yesterday afternoon, and this morning the car was found empty and a few metres away, their lifeless bodies,” an MSF spokesman said on June 25.

Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya tweeted: “Great sadness for the murder of three MSF aid workers, including the Spanish María Hernández in Tigray,” while expressing her condolences to her family and friends, assuring that her Ministry is already “in contact with the Ethiopian authorities to clarify the facts and repatriate the body.”

THE Megayacht Port project, Gran Marina del Estrecho, that was designed to revitalise La Línea tourism in the province of Cadiz,and which has been in the making for 10 years, will be a reality in around two years, developers say.

The contract for the start of the maritime work was signed on May 14 and currently, the signing of the restatement and start of the works with the con‐ struction company, Sacyr, and the Bahia de Algeciras Port Au‐ thority is pending, but is expect‐ ed to be carried out and fi‐ nalised shortly.

The port area project, which is hoped will bring a massive so‐ cial and economic boost to the deprived area of La linea, will have two docks sheltered from the San Felipe dam. One will have 80 berths for megayachts up to 100 metres in length and another with two berths for mid‐sized cruisers, up to 190 or 200 metres in length, seeking different ports and new desti‐ nations.

On land, there will be an area of 11,000 square metres allo‐ cated for serving boats, passen‐ gers and crews, and space for leisure activities and catering establishments.

Sources told The Telegraph they said no to the title over concerns Archie could be bullied because of it.

According to the British broadsheet, multiple sources said the couple were worried it would lead to cruel nicknames as the word dumb is heavily used in the US when British English speakers might have used the word ‘stupid’ instead.

One Direction for Cowell thoughts SIMON COWELL thinks he can persuade One Direction to reunite - if only he could get the five original members in a room together.

Cowell created the boy band on The X Factor 11 years ago, but Zayn Malik quit the band at the beginning of their 2015 world tour. Other band members include Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne.

Cowell told UK media: “I think it will happen. If they got together, whether it’s making records again or touring, it would be the most amazing thing.”

But he admitted he does not know which band member is the most reluctant to reform.

“I don’t know, to be honest. If I could get into a room with them and just say, ‘You know what, whether it’s six months or something, I think you’d have such a great time’ - maybe I could persuade them,” Cowell said.

THE law in Spain states it is no longer necessary to wear a mask outdoors if you can keep a safe dis‐ tance. But this weekend, some people could be seen still wearing their masks while others weren’t.

We asked our readers if they felt safe enough to remove their masks.

In general, they responded that they thought it difficult to maintain a safe distance in crowded ar‐ eas, so they would continue to wear their masks as they did not feel safe in crowds.

The problem, some said, is that other people don’t seem to understand or care about maintain‐ ing a safe distance.

The general opinion is that it’s better to be safe than sorry and some readers compared the situa‐ tion to the UK where masks have not been manda‐ tory outdoors and still have high figures.

Crowdfunding pays for girl’s cancer operation DOCTORS at a hospital in Barcelona have operated for Ewing’s sarcoma on Israe, a 10-year-old Moroccan girl whose treatment was made possible by a worldwide crowdfunding campaign.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that begins in the bones or surrounding soft tissues and usually occurs in children and adolescents.

Israe was diagnosed with pelvic cancer last January and, since she could not be operated on in her country due to the high surgical complexity and not being able to afford treatment abroad, her parents sought help. Thousands of people around the world responded to their crowdfunding campaign online.

Soylaiman Izaagague, Israe’s father, launched the campaign.

Within four months and with support from the media, he managed to draw thousands of people from all over the world to collaborate so that Israe could be operated on at the HM Nou Delfos Hospital.

The rare and complicated operation was needed to fix complex bone problems, and help damaged bones regenerate and come back to life.

THE lack of spectators during the coronavirus pandemic appears to have had a noticeable effect on the performance of athletes at the 2020 Biathlon World Cup, a new study by Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Psychology of Sport and Exercise shows. According to the new analysis, women also performed better in complex tasks, such as shooting, when an audience was present while men did not.

She compared the running times and shooting successes of male and female biathletes from the 2018/2019 season with their performances in the 2020 season in the sprint and mass start events.

The small lizards’ vertebrae are perforated, making it easier to disconnect them without any formation of scar tissue or loss of blood.

Though this ability can keep lizards from being eaten, the manoeuvre is performed at a cost, according to a new study from the University of California at Riverside.

“Other studies have documented the negative effects of tail loss on lizards’ ability to run, jump, mate, and reproduce,” said UCR biologist Marina Vollin. “However, few have examined their ability to capture food when they lose their tails, which is critical for regenerating the tail and for overall survival.”

The researchers found that geckos successfully captured crickets about 77 per cent of the time both before and after losing tails - a surprising retention of accuracy since tails appear to help stabilise gecko body positions during and after a strike. “The geckos were much slower without tails, and their attack strikes much more awkward,” she said.

Ceuta: Don’t feed immigrants A GOVERNMENT delegate has asked Ceuta residents not to give food to immigrants to try and stop them from loitering near supermarkets and restaurants.

A government delegate in Ceuta, Salvadora Mateos, has asked people not to hand out food to Moroccans who remain in the city following a recent dramatic increase in immigration.

Ms Mateos has praised the people of Ceuta for their solidarity, but asked them to work with the NGOs - non-governmental and non-profit organisations that often help out with humanitarian disasters.

“I want to make them see that their actions cause these young people to remain at the doors of supermarkets, restaurants, etc, looking for help,” she said.

In May Spain mobilised the army in Ceuta after more than 5,000 immigrants entered the autonomous city in a single day.

Authorities said that they entered via the Tarajal and Benzu maritime breakwaters.

“The men’s results were as expected: they ran faster with an audience present, but performed more poorly in shooting,” Ms Heinrich said.

“The pandemic offers a unique opportunity to study an audience’s influence outside of experimental conditions in the real world,” she said.

While cross-country skiing mainly requires

It was the other way around for women.

They ran slower in the presence of spectators, but on average, it took them an entire second less to make their shot and, at least in the sprint, their scoring performance was 5 per cent higher.

“To our knowledge, this is the first time that a study was able to show a different effect of the audience on men and women,” said Professor Oliver Stoll, head of the sports psychology section at MLU.

Man tries to drown dog A MAN has been arrested in Madrid’s Coslada after he attempted to drown his dog in the middle of the street.

Luckily for the poor animal, Local Police officers were able to intervene. According to the local council the man was ar-

rested in Coslada by the Local Police after he attempted to drown his dog. He has been arrested for suspected abuse.

The shocking event happened a few days ago, but luckily Local Police officers were on patrol and caught the

man red-handed. The officers spotted the man, who appeared drunk at the time, as he tried to drown a dog.

Thanks to the quick action of the officers the life of Oso, the dog was saved.

The dog had been microchipped so it was possible to find out that the man who had tried to drown him, was in fact his owner.

Oso was taken by the Local Police officers to an Animal Protection Centre, where he is set to stay for a while. The dog’s owner has been arrested for the alleged offence of mistreatment, and he was also arrested for assaulting a police officer who stepped in to stop him from drowning the dog.

The City Council are seeking authorisation from the Community of Madrid to change the dog’s ownership over to the Animal Protection Centre. As soon as change of ownership has gone through the current owner will be disqualified from owning further animals.

Buckingham Palace says it ‘must do more’ to improve ethnic diversity BUCKINGHAM PALACE has released figures showing the levels of ethnic minority staff and says it “must do more” because levels are “not where it would like to be.” The release of the figures comes after the Royal family became embroiled in controversy after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aired racism complaints during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The palace report shows that just 8.5 per cent of staff belonged to an ethnic minority in the year 20202021. It says it will increase this to 10 per cent in the coming year.

Digging around for history THE Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Culture in Sevilla has put out a new tender for archaeological work at the necropolis of Carmona in the belief that there is an unexplored underground chamber within the site.

According to the tender, ‘geophysical anomalies’ were detected in 2020.

Carmona first opened to the public in 1885 after it was uncovered by Juan Fernandez Lopez and George Edward Bonsor. The duo discovered more than 100 Roman tombs and built a museum to display artefacts.

death, Bonsor transferred the site to public ownership.

Carmona was originally a Tartessian-Turdetani settlement. With the arrival of Phoenician traders from Tyre,

Carmona was transformed into a city. Centuries later, it became a Roman stronghold of Hispania Baetica. It was known as Carmo in the time of Julius Caesar some 2,000 years ago.

Brits and Italians moving to Canaries THE Canary Islands have experienced an increase in population despite the fact that they have registered more deaths than births.

That increase of 0.33 per cent is thanks to the arrival of immigrants mainly Brits and Italians.

The Canary Islands began 2021 with 2.24 million inhabitants, an increase of 7,501 people compared to January 1, 2020, thanks to new residents arriving from abroad. According to the National Institute of Statistics, in 2020 3,274 more people died in the Canary Islands than were born. That figure is however offset by arrivals including 2,079 Brits; 1,517 Italians; 1,106 Spaniards returning from abroad; 896 Germans; 719 Colombians; 517 Venezuelans and 434 Moroccans.

Passenger faked PCR test A MAN who tried to fly from Brussels Airport with a falsi‐ fied PCR test has been sen‐ tenced to a year in jail. The sentence is the first handed

down by Belgian courts since authorities announced in April that using a false PCR test would be punishable by prison time.

Venice to ‘danger’ list UNESCO may add Venice to the list of ‘World Heritage in Danger’ after advisors warned the city is facing a series of threats.

“The continued deteriorating effects of human intervention, combined with climate change on the vulnerable lagoon ecosystem, threaten to result in irreversible change,” the body said this week. It said cruise ships are deemed a ‘threat’ to the famous Italian city as they continue to sail through the historic city’s water front centre, despite the Italian government ruling that they should be banned.

“While legal bans already exist for ships over 40,000 gross ton to enter the Venice Lagoon, it has no practical effect, as no alternative exists for the mooring of these large ships,” UNESCO said, adding a long-term solution was needed as a matter of urgency.

Complex impacts of mass tourism, the constant decrease of population and the basic deficiencies in governance and cooperated management have led to a significant loss of historical authenticity within Venice, UNESCO stated. It also said the lagoon’s ecology faces “irreversible change.”

Authorities say that be‐ tween April 19 and June 11, 576 people were discovered with a forged PCR test at Brussels Airport after Bel‐ gium allowed non‐essential foreign travel. Travellers are required to show a negative PCR test result and complete a locator form.

Failing to fill in the form correctly, making a false declaration or attempting to beat the PCR test system can result in an immediate €750 fine or further prosecution.

The man jailed on Tues‐ day, June 22, presented a negative PCR result from a friend who had falsified the test. He had also refused to accept an out‐of‐court agreement and failed to ap‐ pear before judges.

The court said the man’s behaviour was “not only an‐ tisocial” but was also poten‐ tially life‐threatening, and the jail term was appropri‐ ate given the circumstances of the case.

BRITISH transport company National Express has announced its acquisi‐ tion of Transportes Rober (Rober) in Spain at a cost of €13 million.

The acquisition of Rober, which has operated the urban bus contract in Granada for more than 20 years, represents a further step in consoli‐ dating the regional and urban bus markets, a strategy which Alsa (which it also owns) has successfully

Currency outlook: Hawkish Fed turbocharges the US dollar, reopening delay rocks the pound

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.86 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.22 to $1.19 The euro spent the first half of June trad‐ ing in a narrow range, as optimism over the reopening of more parts of the Eurozone offset some dovish forward guidance from the European Central Bank (ECB).

However the euro then suffered a dra‐ matic drop off in mid‐June, as the strong negative correlation in the EUR/USD pairing saw the single currency suffer following a surge in the US dollar.

EUR exchange rates have then remained largely subdued through the latter half of the month, only finding some modest sup‐ port on the back of some upbeat Eurozone PMI figures.

Looking ahead, with the ECB expected to maintain its dovish bias for some time, and indications that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is starting to spread through Europe, any upside in the euro over the next month may prove limited.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.15 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Down from $1.41 to $1.39 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, amidst a mix of coronavirus and Brexit uncertainty.

In regards to coronavirus concerns, the rapid spread of the Delta variant through‐ out the UK, and the government’s subse‐ quent delaying of its reopening date dealt a major blow to Sterling.

Renewed Brexit tensions between the

UK and EU over the Northern Ireland proto‐ col has also driven volatility in GBP ex‐ change rates.

Sterling’s attempts to rally towards the end of June were then scuppered by the Bank of England (BoE) as it struck a disap‐ pointing dovish tone following its latest policy meeting.

Turning to next month, the direction of GBP exchange rates will largely depend on whether lifting of the remaining coron‐ avirus restrictions goes ahead on July 19 as planned, with any further delay likely to place considerable pressure on the pound.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.70 to £0.71 USD/EUR: Up from €0.81 to €0.83 The US dollar rallied sharply over the past month, with USD exchange rates strik‐ ing a two month high, following a surpris‐ ingly hawkish shift by the Federal Reserve.

The Fed’s more hawkish forward guid‐ ance came amidst a sharp upturn in US in‐ flationary pressure in May, as the country’s latest consumer price index printed at a dizzying 5 per cent.

However it wasn’t all plain sailing for the ‘greenback’ with some underwhelming US data, mostly notably May’s non‐farm pay‐ rolls, which printed well below expecta‐ tions for the second consecutive month.

Going forward, whether or not the US dollar is able to maintain its positive trajec‐ tory will likely depend quite a bit on June’s payroll figures as another disappointing reading could raise some concerns over an unbalance economic recovery.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IT’S not often I allow myself to succumb to pure unmitigated anger.

I’m a bit long in the tooth for a condition that can sometimes create more problems than it actually eliminates.

But this week I encountered an exception to my own rule. It began with the announcement that poor white schoolchildren were under‐ achieving in UK schools. Oddly the UK media actually gave this news quite extensive coverage. (Deferring perhaps to the new GB channel that is literally plundering their viewing figures!) This announcement was bad enough, but it was watching the young white pupils being interviewed that truly got this old boy’s hackles up. Primarily it was quite a pleasant rarity to see two or three white pupils appear on the screen in succession!

However, that’s where any pleasurable viewing ended.

It was the general demeanour of these youngsters that got to me; they seemed confused and almost reticent to air their views on camera.

Educational opinions SCHOOLCHILDREN: Normally bright, happy and full of hope for the future.

The vast numbers of black and ethnic minority students, who regularly appear on these programmes for a whole cross section of their ‘educational opinions,’ are generally (unless they’re whinging) bright, happy and full of hope for the future. In contrast these white children seemed bewildered and

utterly lacking in confidence. This is a direct result of the woke and PC attitude toward the education of our youngsters; a system of the left which is deliberately concentrating so much on making sure the minorities are put to the fore and given every opportunity, they are neglecting the children of the white indigenous

majority. Instead of instilling them with national pride and confidence, these ‘privileged’ children are being made to feel ashamed of their ancestry and responsible for just about every malady that ails their great nation.

Everywhere they look they witness anti‐white propaganda; from their sportsmen taking the knee to the desecration of their historical statues.

Is it any wonder their grades are suffering and they are developing complexes of inferiority? This week (not for the first time) the BBC advertised jobs where only black and ethnic minorities need apply. This is a disgraceful example of the pure hypocrisy of an organisation that is supposed to be anti‐racist, but is actually steeped in racism and panders to the ethnic minorities purely to make sure Labour gets a favourable result in the next election.

(Some chance!) This is all a part of the insidious woke and Marxist BLM agenda.

Attack British culture, undermine its historical achievements, lower morale, diminish belief in itself and turn the citizens and families against each other. And where better to start than among the young and most impressionable? Have no doubt the aim of this evil ideology is not integration, it is domination. It’s time for the indigenous majority to stand up and be counted and let these people know that the UK is utterly sick of its whole traitorous anti British attitude. If not I’m afraid the white populace will finish up the same way as many have in South Africa.

And believe me, that is not a pleasant proposition at all!

Sandy beaches, convenient English‐ speaking bars and restaurants aren’t something that a small minority of buyers want here in Spain.

What about those of you who wish for example to emulate Chris Stewart in ‘Driving over Lemons’ in the Alpujar‐ ras and make a go of an off‐grid farm or finca as it is called here in Spain?

Well it’s certainly possible, I increasing‐ ly find myself in a rural Notary office signing for a client, but the legal chal‐ lenges you’ll face could be great.

Don’t be put off, the key here is once you have had your offer accepted like any other purchase in Spain is don’t sign or pay anything until you have taken some specialist legal advice from a lawyer that you have chosen yourself. That way you will have a

qualified legal opinion as to what you are getting into. The Spanish Solicitor or Abogado will be able to liaise with the authorities, local town hall, your ar‐ chitect and builders to ensure that you have the necessary licences to ensure that your rural retreat is everything that you want it to be.

So if you’re planning a move to Spain, whether it is for a new place in the sun or you plan to retire to Spain, take some independent advice. As with all my articles this isn’t legal advice and myself and many other lawyers are at your disposal. Of course ask the lawyer for their registration number and check with the Bar Association that they are able to practise.

If you plan to open a business like a holiday rental (Airbnb, Booking etc) then other legal requirements for will have to be met and this is something for a future article.

Dirty habits WE are creatures of habit. But, did you know that even habits that can seem inconsequential can have a negative effect on your health and beauty.

Here are four things that you probably do every day which not only impact your health but also your physical appearance.

If you drink a lot of milk, particularly more than one litre a day, then you are consuming too much fat. Just one cup of milk contains 7.93g of fat so you can see how that can build up.

Plucking or waxing your eyebrows immediately before applying your make-up causes chemicals in your make-up to come into direct contact with your pores. Your skin will absorb this and it may cause irritation. The ideal time to pluck or wax is to do so with clean skin.

WHAT is the best thing for keeping mosquitoes away?

WITH the much awaited summer months come long, warm nights to be enjoyed sitting outside, maybe enjoying a drink and some tapas, but unfortunately, they also bring some less popular visitors: mosquitoes.

Keep reading to find out more about them and how to keep them at bay.

Itching and scratching Mosquitoes can be a huge problem, and although most people will only find their bites uncomfortably itchy, others can suffer more serious reactions. Young children seem to be particularly tasty for them and without a good after-bite product, it can be hard to keep them from scratching, and with dirty fingernails, bites can become infected.

More about mosquitoes They don’t actually bite.

Within their elongated mouthpieces there are six needle-like pieces; two to break the skin, two to keep it apart, one to detect blood vessels and the other to extract the blood. Their saliva is what causes the itching as most people are allergic to it. It’s only the females which do this to get blood which will allow eggs to develop. Almost 10 per cent said that none of the above was effective.

Common mosquito The common mosquito, or culex pipiens, is the most common, measuring between four and 10 millimetres, it bites at night in the summer months. It can spread Nile Fever. It has a distinctive white line and is between six and nine millimetres long. It also bites during the day, mainly around the legs and ankles, and the bites are very itchy. It can spread several diseases and its presence in Spain rose 70 per cent in 2020 compared to the previous year, mainly in the Levante area.

Egyptian mosquito The Egyptian mosquito, Aedes Aegypti is one of the most worrying because it can spread the most diseases. It is also striped and bites several times. Found in Andalucia and Catalonia, mainly near water.

Anopheles mosquito The Anopheles mosquito is one of the best known and can spread malaria, which is not considered to be a problem in Europe, but causes 600,000 deaths per year in the world, mainly in Africa. It is six millimetres long and bites at dusk and at night.

Sleepless cyan RECENT research has shown that the colour cyan - between green and blue - affects our sleep.

Biologists based in the University of Manchester say that higher levels of cyan keep people awake, whilst lower levels induce sleep.

It is hoped that the results will mean that computer screens and phones could increase or decrease the levels of cyan in the screen.

Existing ‘night mode’ settings for phones and laptops are the result of previous research which showed a link between blue light and sleep. However, this research, published in the journal Sleep, shows the particular impact of the colour cyan.

Participants in the research were exposed to more or less cyan in order to measure the different levels of the sleep hormone melatonin.

The researchers suggest that shades of cyan could be used on computer screens to keep people awake, such as those working on night shifts for example.

Or shades and colours which give the same affect, but don’t actually have cyan, could be used if the aim was to reduce anything that impedes sleep.

The findings could be particularly useful to help families with teenagers who stay up at night using their mobile phones.

THIS week our local Facebook Forum lit up with people want‐ ing to know what the sirens were for. Once again, the awful news of a child drowning in the family swimming pool was the tragic cause of the commotion.

Our hearts go out to the family of this toddler, and to the hun‐ dred other families that are go‐ ing to have the same devastat‐ ing loss this year in Spain.

When writing these articles we have always avoided mentioning specific incidents as it could ap‐ pear to be disrespectful and in‐ sensitive to the families suffering this cruel experience that you wouldn’t wish on your worst en‐ emy. The authorities still refuse to legislate, and there is no societal pressure for people to protect their pools, so the tragic families are just incredibly unlucky.

Children who drown in swim‐ ming pools are usually under adult supervision and are not thought to be anywhere near the pool. It only takes a momentary distraction and tragedy can strike. So quietly. No splashing and no screaming. In Australia, France, and the USA it is manda‐ tory for pools to have fences round them. When we, at Neater Heater, realised that there was no law in Spain, and that it was actually difficult to find someone who installed them, we decided to provide the service ourselves.

OAP with various health problems I do find the advertising on daytime TV a bit depressing. Every other advert is about making arrangements for when I die so my loved ones don’t have to worry about the funeral. I've seen commercials where investors offer to purchase your home with a cash offer so you can avoid repossession.

There are lots of ads for cancer charities.

The assumption is that the daytime TV viewers are in financial turmoil, very sick or unemployed when, in fact, all I want to do is watch a bit of light-hearted TV. So how’s everyone enjoying Brexit? I was criticised a few times for only worrying how it affected me and how I should look at the bigger picture and my reply was I actually don’t give a toss about the bigger picture.

Import duty is putting up prices on products in the UK and sending a parcel to anyone in the UK now comes with the added delight of filling in a customs declaration.

And it’s stopped us travelling back and forth to the UK during the pandemic.

It’s affected trading shares on the UK stock exchange and Marks and Sparks have had problems getting fresh salad stuff in their stores.

Just all a nuisance rather than a benefit.

You could also consider purchasing gift vouchers from local businesses to help them over the coming weeks, thinking outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an online study course for some‐ one looking to change their career path.

As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may

actually need is important too.

Whilst it’s nice to give a glam‐ ourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping peo‐ ple alleviate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times.

Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays lo‐ cal, and it strengthens the lo‐ cal economy in two ways.

First, buying local keeps mon‐ ey circulating within the local economy.

Studies have shown that lo‐ cal businesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as

they create locally owned sup‐ ply chains and invest in their employees.

Data shows that local retail‐ ers return 52 per cent of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to just 14 per cent for national chain re‐ tailers.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits ev‐ eryone who is a part of each transaction. For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn pre‐ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employ‐ ees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbour‐ hood hardware store. This ex‐ ample illustrates how the re‐ circulation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and com‐ munities.

Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportu‐ nities for people within our community.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more peo‐ ple per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

The danger of grass spikelets for dogs THE spikelets are pods that cover the seeds of grass plants.

They have a sharp point and several rough filaments. Follow the snail trail PROBABLY the most popular pets are cats, dogs or birds, but finding a family with a pet snail would most likely be quite rare.

Snails are quiet, they don’t take up much space, they don’t need to be taken for a

walk, and it does not cost a lot to feed and care for them.

They can be kept in a spe‐ cial clear terrarium made of plastic or glass.

A layer of soil is needed at the bottom of the container, approximately 4cm deep, so

they can bury themselves in it and it is also where they lay their eggs. Rather than earth from the garden, it is recom‐ mended a special terrarium earth is used, which can be bought from local pet stores, as garden soil may contain parasites.

As snails do not like ex‐ treme temperatures, keep them protected from the cold and the heat. A terracotta pot on its side gives them a good place to hide if there is sun.

These small creatures are hermaphrodites, which means they have male and fe‐ male reproductive organs at the same time.

These molluscs are more active at night, when they feed and reproduce. They like to eat most green leaves, vegetables, carrot halves, beetroot, etc.

At least once a week, the terrarium should be cleaned of all mucus and faeces, and any rotten food cleared away, as once decayed, it could be harmful to the snails.

AS of July 1, the new V‐16 lights will begin to replace the warning triangles that drivers are current‐ ly supposed to use on the roads in the event of an accident, a de‐ vice which is an orange flashing light that must be placed in the highest part of the vehicle to sig‐ nal that the vehicle is stopped.

Now the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has cleared up the confusion that the V‐16 lights

DGT Clears Up Confusion may be used instead of the trian‐ gles from July, and they will be‐ come mandatory in 2026, after which point, the only thing al‐ lowed to signal incidents will be this luminous beacon.

Ana Blanco, the deputy direc‐ tor of circulation of the DGT, spoke about it a few months ago,

when she commented, “people become vulnerable when they have to leave the vehicle to place the triangles,” with Jorge Ordás, the general deputy director of Mobility Management and Tech‐ nology of the DGT, also pointing to the high number of fatal acci‐ dents that occurred when drivers got out of their vehicles to place the triangles.

These new beacons can be placed without leaving the vehi‐ cle when a driver suffers a break‐ down, simply by lowering the driver’s window and placing the device on the roof above them, where it will be secured with a magnetic anchor.

This device will have a parabol‐ ic reflector, making it visible over a radius of one kilometre, even in low visibility conditions, without the need for cables, since it works with a battery, as well as giving the possibility for the driver to send a request for assistance us‐ ing the device’s connection to the driver’s mobile phone.

The DGT also reminds drivers, in the event of a breakdown or accident, only get out of the vehi‐ cle if it is safe, and always on the opposite side of the traffic flow.

TYRE CHECK: Manufacturers recommend changing every five years.

WITH the hot summer months almost upon us in Spain, and after a long period where ve‐ hicles have not been used so much ‐ if at all ‐ drivers should take care to check that the tyres on their vehicle are in good working order, before undertaking any journeys.

It should be normal anyway to check the tyres for any defi‐ ciencies or wear and tear, and also to ensure that they meet the minimum legal require‐ ments for driving, both for your own safety, and to avoid any unnecessary fines, be‐ cause in the event of the police stopping you and discovering

that the tread on your vehi‐ cle’s tyres is less than 1.6 mil‐ limetres in depth, the resulting fine is €200 per tyre.

There are easy ways to check your tyres without the need to visit a garage or a me‐ chanic, and the best‐known check for the tyre tread depth is by using a one euro coin (in the UK, normally a 20p coin) into the groove, and if the gold edge of the coin is not visible then the depth of the tread is within the required measure‐ ment.

However, if the gold edge of the coin does not fit into the groove then the depth is too

shallow and the tyre should be changed as soon as possible.

Of course, it is standard practice to always check the condition of your vehicle’s tyres, and even if the tread is intact, a tyre can still lose trac‐ tion as it gets older, and most tyre manufacturers will recom‐ mend you change the tyres a minimum of every five years.

If you look closely at the numbers engraved on the sides of the tyre, they will refer to the week and the date of manufacture, so it is easy for you to calculate how old they are, and whether they might need changing or not.

ROAD TEST

by Mark Slack IF you have looked at the price of most new cars you’ll have gathered they aren’t cheap, even small hatchbacks are not necessarily in the af‐ fordable bracket. However, value for money can be had from mainstream manufac‐ turers if you are looking for a family car.

Citroen’s new C4 provided an enjoyable week’s motor‐ ing and with prices starting from a smidgen over €24,498 (£21,000) it represents in‐ credibly good value for your motoring money. There are petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic gears and even full electric power.

Standard equipment across the board includes 18” wheels, LED lights, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Blue‐ tooth, height adjustable front seats, automatic dual zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers and heated and pow‐ ered door mirrors.

My test model was the mid‐table Shine version with prices from a still very rea‐

The great value Citroen C4 sonable €28,011 (£24,010), bringing a significant ramp up in the standard equipment stakes. Petrol power for the range comes from a 1.2‐litre, three‐cylinder turbocharged unit in two power outputs, 129hp and 153hp. In my case the 129hp engine mated to a six‐speed manual gearbox.

The first thing that strikes you about the Citroen is re‐ finement, even under hard acceleration, when three‐ cylinders generally sound like an over excited lawnmower, the Citroen is remarkably qui‐ et.

It has a feeling of quality, not something that has al‐ ways been a hallmark of Cit‐ roen’s past.

A nice slick gear change and well‐chosen ratios means the C4 bowls along with little extra effort re‐ quired from the driver, and it’s a comfortable place to be seated.

It’s no hot hatch and you certainly won’t want to be hustling it along twisty roads,

even though the famously comfortable Citroen suspen‐ sion produces less body roll than you might imagine.

It’s a very modern looking car with swooping lines, es‐ pecially to the rear, but ac‐

cess and egress remains com‐ fortable and most who saw my test car loved the looks.

This is a car aimed at the family in my view, and it does a great job of providing practical, well ‐equipped

transport at an affordable price.

As with sister manufactur‐ er Peugeot the quality has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, yet you do get a distinctly differ‐

ent car to any Peugeot sta‐ blemates.

I loved the C4, it has dis‐ tinct echoes of Citroen’s quirky past but in a very use‐ able, modern form in a great value package.
