Big plans for Torrevieja THE regional government is planning a revamp for Torrevieja’s port, creating a leisure area with restaurants, bars, cafes and shops.

The Generalitat’s Infrastructure chief Arcadi España nevertheless revealed that although his department is working on the project, putting this out tender is “not imminent.”

Remodelling the 185,000‐square metre port area and opening it up to the centre of Torrevieja is an old ambition as at present both zones are divorced and separate from each other, meeting only on the Levante promenade and the fairground.

Ultimately, the project will be decided by the regional govern‐ ment, which controls the Valencian Community’s ports and marinas either directly or by contracting a concessionary.

Torrevieja Town Hall will also put forward suggestions and al‐ though not competent to do so, is already drawing up its own plans in the knowledge that the last word will go to the Generalitat.

Despite the lack of urgency on the part of regional government, according to the Spanish media there is at least one Vega Baja devel‐ oper, experienced in concessions, who is currently said to be work‐ ing on the project.

Short films SANTA POLA announced that submissions for the Ninth Regional Short Film Competition to be held at the Casa de Cultura on November 11, 12 and 13 should be submitted before September 30.

Water court still going strong THE Generalitat allocated €70,000 to Valencia City’s Tribunal de las Aguas (Water Court).

The court has been meeting each Thursday outside the cathedral’s

Apostles’ Door for almost 1,000 years and deals with issues arising from the irrigation system in the agricultural areas that still surround the city.

Murcia Youth Imprisoned AN appeal by a Mula (Murcia) resident to overturn a sentence handed down in December 2020 has been dismissed.

The youth, sentenced to three months and 23 days in prison, had been found guilty of beating his mother after she had re‐ fused his demands to give him the money to buy cannabis joints.

The incident occurred at the family home, when the mother responded to her son’s insults by hitting him on his back with a slipper. The defendant started to push and punch his mother, causing injuries that took five days to heal, which the Murcia judge considered to be a crime of mistreatment in the family.

Regarding the defendant’s allegation that it was his mother who started the confrontation, the judge commented that the fact she hit him with a shoe “does not determine, by itself, that the defendant’s aggression did not take place.”

Concluding the session, the judge said that, on the other hand, it was not proven that the mother acted out of spurious interests, since in the trial she had referred to how much it cost her mentally to decide to denounce her own son, but she did so thinking it was in the best of his interests at the time.

Four-province Second time initiative around

CORTEFIEL, the Spanish clothing chain, is organising a clean‐up operation on Santa Pola’s El Pinet beach on Saturday June 19.

The #PlayasLimpias project has been launched with input from the environmentalist group Seo Birdlife and national recycling organisation Ecoem‐ bes in Malaga, Tarifa (Cadiz) and Mataro (Barcelona) as well as Santa Pola.

Cortefiel, which now belongs to Tendam, was founded 70 years ago and has a loyalty club with more than six million members. It hopes to involve as many as possible in the beach‐cleaning initiative publicised through the brand’s social media pages.

Face masks could go next month THE regional government will press to eliminate the use of face masks outdoors in July.

Ximo Puig, the Valencian Community’s president revealed at the beginning of this week in an interview with the regional radio station, A Punt,

that he intends to put forward the request at the next meeting of the Inter-territorial Health Committee.

“The Valencian Community has the lowest accumulated Covid incidence rate in Spain with 40 cases for every

100,000 inhabitants,” he reminded his interviewer. “This makes it a safe destination that guarantees stability,” Puig added.

Valencia’s regional government hopes that next month it will be possible to visit beaches, rivers, countryside and mountains where there is natural ventilation and social distancing can be guaranteed.

The Generalitat president pointed out that, according to experts, masks in surroundings like these “play absolutely no part” in catching or transmitting the coronavirus.

Puig nevertheless stressed during the A Punt interview that ventilation and fresh air were vitally important.

The Valencian president was characteristically cautious about no longer wearing a mask inside towns and cities, as masks were a symbol that the virus “is still out there,” he said. “It is essential to remember that a battle is still being fought against the coronavirus and the face mask image is fundamental,” Puig emphasised.

It was unfair to insinuate nursing staff obtained their jobs because they were “councillors’ offspring” and not on merit, they said.

Help needed THE mayors of Crevillent and Daya Vieja complained that they are still waiting for aid from the provincial council, the Diputacion, following the storms of September 2019.

Twenty-one months after the catastrophe the only institution that had failed to pay affected municipalities was the Diputacion, both men maintained.

No plastic MONTESINOS declared war on plastic by giving out a reusable cloth bag in exchange for every five plastic bags taken to the town hall on market day. A plastic bag is used for 12 minutes, but takes 500 years to biodegrade, the Commerce and Environment councillor pointed out.

JAB FOR JUSTIN

MY name is Justin Boland, son of Maurice and Wendy, I grew up on the Costa Del Sol, in the Marbella area from when I was six years old. I’m now 45 (this week was my birthday - 13/06).

I am a father of two boys, I work as Sales Director for world famous Engel and Völkers, and Covid-19 just tried to kill me!

Generally, I live a healthy lifestyle, I don’t smoke, I don’t really drink, I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit. I don’t have any underlying conditions!

On Tuesday May 18 I’d had my typical session of paddle tennis. I have to admit I was feeling a little bit unusual, not very energetic and extremely hungry, which was not typical for me.

By the time I got home my energy level had dropped and I put it down to just being hungry. I had my dinner and went to lie down when I suddenly started shaking.

My fever went right up. I took paracetamol and went to bed.

The next morning I woke up feeling great. No temperature, but by about 4pm I started to feel unwell again and my fever picked up. I decided to get a rapid Covid test, which came back negative.

By May 25, I couldn’t resist any more and went to Hospiten in Estepona and to my shock, I received a call - I had Covid-19.

Because I had already been sick a few days they recommended that I go to the ward and let the doctor inspect me properly. I stayed in the hospital a couple of days, during which I started to feel much worse.

On May 28, the doctor recommended that I go to Santa Elena hospital in Malaga as they had the best treatment for Covid.

On my arrival to Santa Elena,I was immediately put into ICU. I was hooked up to machines and put on oxygen. I was terrified at this point. The doctors had warned me if the oxygen was not sufficient to deal with the virus that was attacking my lungs they might have to induce a coma and put me on a mechanical ventilator!

HOSPITALISED: I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team.

HEALTHY: I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit.

It was then the realisation struck home and I began to worry, will I die whilst in a coma?

On May 30, they decided to put me into a temporary coma in order to save my life.

Being young and as I said before healthy, it took nine days altogether when my body started to respond and decided it was time to come out.

I remember waking up, I had no idea what had happened. I had no idea why I was even under sedation (it took a while to come back to me) it was really odd. But what was really distressing and this is something quite normal, is for the time I was under, I had lost the ability to be able to physically walk, use my hands and my general condition was one of a very frail old man. Now understanding the fact that recovery will take a little while of course I understand

things better.

I wanted to share my story because so many people out there think it would never happen to them. Well that’s just simply wrong and I’m proof of that. I am giving a real warning to people out there.

Get Vaccinated!

Unfortunately I was not in the age category to be vaccinated at that point. But I can promise you one thing if I had been none of this would’ve happened.

Just imagine the person, simply by touching me they actually nearly killed me. You have the obligation as a human to help protect your fellow humans.

I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team and I

for one am for ever thankful to be given a second chance in life.

The English-speaking nurses work round the clock, they are diligent, humane and altogether amazing. Without their love and care I don’t know how I would’ve got through the most difficult 14 days of my life.

Thank you so much, all of you!

I of course want to also thank the Doctor who made that very difficult decision to save my life and for that I will never forget.

Thank you Dr Elias Ceravola, you’re an amazing man and I will never forget you. You saved my life!

Something really important to note. Even though the hospital has some of the most incredible emergency equipment, some of the more basic day-today things are missing as they are slowly investing in the hospital, for example some new wardrobes.

The reassurance is so helpful but without the simple basics it makes their jobs quite difficult.

Their focus should be solely on your health, so I think by getting the wardrobes, this is a small gesture where we will be helping them!

Any donation will be greatly received, €5, €10, €20 whatever works for you. Even if we can get five wardrobes, that’s better than nothing!

U3A update TORREVIEJA U3A will hold a full meeting l a t e r t h i s m o n t h a l‐ though the associa‐ tion normally ceases activities during the summer months.

“This will be a chance to meet up with friends old and new and also to be entertained by a popular local singer,” said Torrevieja U3A’s press officer, Barry Weston.

“New members wishing to join the group will also be welcome.”

Coffee mornings will be held during July and August, al‐ lowing future events to be booked and paid for and to sim‐ ply socialise.

The annual Groups Fa i r t a k e s p l a c e i n September and there are also plans for a C r a f t Fa i r t o r a i s e funds for the Presi‐ dent’s Charity in the autumn.

T h e Fa i r w i l l b e open to stallholders, regardless of whether they are U3A members or not, at a cost of €5 per table.

Police Hunt Man With Gun SPANISH police are looking for a 22‐year‐old man with multiple criminal records who was last seen in the Barrio del Cristo neighbourhood of Valencia, who, according to sources fre‐ quents the municipalities of Godelleta, Cañada, Paterna, Al‐ fafar, and Aldaia, and usually carries weapons.

The young Uruguayan nation‐ al was born in 1999, and has been observed boasting on so‐ cial networks about owning firearms, including an HK 9 mil‐ limetre pistol that he has dis‐ played in several videos, and has even gone as far as to record himself firing it from the window of a vehicle.

In his social networks he has posted numerous videos that have proved useful for the in‐ vestigating police officers, and in one of them, he has recorded

himself travelling in a vehicle with another young man while he takes a gun out of a bumbag, and then focuses the camera on his companion, who does the same.

Laughing in one video, he also shows a drawer full of cannabis buds and mocks his relationship with Justice, saying “You can all see me in the prosecutor’s of‐ fice, but never in TikTok.”

Expert Welfare Team H E L P V ega B aja recently introduced their six-strong Welfare Team. “ T he W elfare T eam provides a far greater opportunity to support people struggling with welfare-related needs,” explained the charity’s president Michele Masson. “ N ot only do we now have people who have experience with benefit applications like attendance allowance, we have a team that has vast experience in other areas,” she revealed.

“For example, we have a qualified occupational therapist with experience in working alongside patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s.”

S imilarly, the team can call upon members plus, of course, the practical support that H E L P V ega B aja is renowned for.

“With experienced listeners on-board we are also able to offer emotional support as several team members have experience volunteering with UK Samaritans and counselling,” Michele added.

“We are also very aware of the support needed for carers and have several projects in mind which we believe will

support this group of people, many of whom struggle daily. We would like to remind people that all our services are offered completely free.”

Having set up the Welfare Team the charity is now looking to recruit a fundraising team.

“We very much appreciate the support we receive in our charity shop and various market stalls, but we also need to raise funds with events, raffles and other opportunities. If anyone is interested in becoming part of this new team, please do get in touch,” Michele said.

€500 for DEBRA Butterfly DEBRA held its first fundraising event this year at the Hillside Bar and Snooker Centre in Torrevie‐ ja’s La Marina urbanisation.

With Tommy Rogers as host and quizmaster, the evening started with supper followed by the Fun Quiz.

This was won by The Nump‐ ties, but it was impossible to beat the cards and no‐one completed Play Your Cards Right.

Ticket money, raffle and fundraising throughout the evening produced €330 with a €60 donation from the Lemon Challenge at the Hillside Bar, giv‐ ing the charity a total of €390.

Lorna Cowen donated €10 to round this up to €400, with other guests then giving personal dona‐ tions. Young Stanley gave his pocket money and then DEBRA’s youngest volunteer decided to go round shaking his bucket.

This added another €34.31 to the pot, while Carl, Kelly and Aunt Flo gave donations which brought the final total to €500.

It was a great night for the DE‐ BRA charity, who thanked every‐ one that attended for their con‐ tinued support and generosity.

“We look forward to many more fundraising evenings at the Hillside Bar and Snooker Centre,” the organisers said.

One reader commented “singling out one race from another is racism in itself. No colour race or creed is above another. All lives matter not just black ones. It is causing the racialism and segregation of humans. So yes, it is a perfect statement.”

Meanwhile, another reader posted a message from the FA to Eng‐ land supporters, in it could be read “as the team has reiterated many times, they will collectively take the knee ahead of their fixtures during the tournament. They are doing this as a mechanism of peacefully protesting against discrimination, injustice and inequality. This is person‐ ally important to the players and the values the team collectively repre‐ sents. This gesture of unity and fighting against inequality can be traced back as far as the 18th century. It is not new and English football has made it very clear that it does not view this as being aligned to a political organisation or ideology.”

On the other hand, another reader suggested that rather than taking the knee to show their support for unjust situations, players may be ap‐ preciated if they made more donations to charities.

Most comments suggested that football fans would be happy to be able to watch the matches without politics being involved. Most impor‐ tantly, many readers showed their support for Eriksen and wished him a speedy recovery.

Hartlepool Monkey R E P O R T S that have appeared in the UK press concerning perceived problems with the Hartlepool Monkey have been dismissed.

The story developed when it was announced that the Hartlepool Council was considering adding an explanatory plaque to the monkey statue as it may offend some visitors by having possible racist connections.

In fact, the story goes that during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked off the coast of an old fishing village on the north-east coast of England and the only survivor was a monkey that managed to get to shore.

Those living in Hartlepool had never seen a monkey or a F renchman and as they couldn’t understand what it was saying, they assumed it was a F rench spy and hanged it.

There is no real documentation to prove this, but it

Gordon Brown Won’t Give Up GORDON BROWN is still pushing for the UK to join the EU and said that he will not give up, stressing that this is his personal view and accepts that it is unlikely in the short term.

Although the former prime minster was a strong remain sup‐ porter before the referendum in 2016, this is the first time he has explicitly called for the UK to return to the EU. “I want to rejoin the European Union,” Brown said. “I’ll not give up. I didn’t support joining the euro because I didn’t think it would work for Britain, it wasn’t because I objected to a single currency.

“I’m not some mad integrationist that in all situations will say, integrate, integrate, integrate. But I do think our future is still Eu‐ ropean, and I do think that myself. Vaccine record

THE Ministry of Health reported on Thursday June 10, after updating its report on vaccination activity in Spain, that 25.1 per cent of the population is already fully vaccinated against Covid‐19. This figure shows that 11,893,951 citizens are already fully immunised.

According to the report, a total of 31,628,321 vac‐ cines have been administered, 624,261 alone since June 9, which represents a new record of doses inject‐

ed in one day. In addition, 43.5 per cent of the popula‐ tion has at least one dose, which represents a total of 20,628,061 people.

According to these latest health data, the number of doses delivered in Spain amounts to 34,715,980, of which 31,628,321 have already been administered, which implies that 91.1 per cent of the total doses re‐ ceived have been administered.

Operation Summer 2021

SUMMER MONTHS: Police reinforcements will increase security for citizens in tourist areas.

RAFAEL PÉREZ, the Secretary of State for Security of the Ministry of the Interior has activated Opera‐ tion Summer 2021, a plan that will reinforce the numbers of National Police and Guardia Civil in the nine autonomous communities of Spain that re‐ ceive the greatest influx of visitors: Andalucia, As‐ turias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, and Murcia.

Mr Pérez announced that Operation Summer 2021 will run from July 1 until August 31, 2021, ex‐ cept in the case of the Balearic Islands, where the plan will last until September 30, 2021.

During this period, the National Police will be re‐ inforced with an extra 2,222 officers, while the Guardia Civil reinforcement will be another 1,599 troops.

Aimed at reducing the risks associated with common crime, and to increase citizen security in these areas of high tourist interest, Operation Sum‐

mer 2021 allows increased surveillance and pre‐ ventive control in urban and interurban communi‐ cation routes, stations, ports, airports, hotels, beaches, and campsites, as well as on the occasion of any event that involves a large concentration of people.

One of the priority objectives of Operation Sum‐ mer 2021 is to reinforce prevention against certain criminal offences against property, such as theft in‐ side homes, as well as offering extreme prevention against online scams, one of the crimes that pro‐ duce the most complaints during the holiday months as a result of the increase of the use of the internet to reserve accommodation and travel packages during the summer months.

Operation Summer in Spain aims to provide pro‐ tection and security in general to all activities relat‐ ed to tourism, as well as to all national and foreign citizens who come or move through the national territory to enjoy their summer holiday period.

MBE to Sue WILSON,‘For ser‐ vices to British Nationals in Spain and the European Union’ As Chair of Bremain in Spain, Sue is one of the most visible campaigners for the rights of UK nationals in the EU. When moving to Spain to retire over 10 years ago, she had no experience of advoca‐ cy, campaigning work or speaking in public. However, the result of the 2016 EU referendum affected her deeply and since then she has worked on the issue of UK nationals’ rights in various different ways. Sue has lobbied UK and EU influencers and made great efforts to inform the UK Gov‐ ernment’s work on citizens’ rights, including appearing in front of the Select Committee for Exiting the EU. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Sue has worked with great de‐ termination to raise the profile of citizens’ rights amongst politicians and key influencers. Her remarkable contribution and collaborative approach has helped the UK Government minimise preventable consular cases by ensuring UK na‐ tionals in the EU are reflected in the negotiations and that they have a clear understanding of their rights and how to access them. Her work has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of UK nationals.”

MBE to Anne Patricia Dawn HERNÁNDEZ, ‘For services to British Nationals in Spain’ Based in Andalucia, Anne spearheaded the formation of Brexpats in Spain. As its President, Anne has worked tirelessly to inform UK nationals of their EU exit rights and responsibilities. She has championed key issues, supported UK nationals to ac‐ cess services, lobbied the Spanish local authorities for improvements, and support‐ ed the Embassy and Consulates to disseminate accurate information.

HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Anne has given freely and selflessly of her time, actively and practically supporting UK nationals, the Embassy, and the Spanish authorities. As the driving force behind Br‐ expats in Spain, Anne has brought together a body of trusted experts to provide free and accurate information to members; ensuring UK nationals are aware of their rights and take the necessary actions to protect them. Her work has had an indisputably positive effect on the lives of so many UK nationals living in Spain.”

MBE to Debbie WILLIAMS, ‘For services to British Nationals in the European Union’ A former member of the armed forces, Debbie set up the grass roots organisation Brexpats ‐ Hear Our Voice (BHOV) as a pan‐European group a few days after the EU Referendum in June 2016. Moving from Belgium to Spain shortly afterwards, she continued her lobbying, engagement and awareness‐raising efforts, considering the impact of the UK’s departure from the EU on both UK Nationals in Europe and EU Nationals in the UK. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “Debbie’s voluntary contribution has been outstanding ‐ going beyond lobbying to provide a voice to citizens and to raise awareness of the im‐ pact the UK’s exit from the EU has had on the daily lives of individuals on both a practical and emotional level.

Through Brexpats Hear Our Voice, Debbie has created a platform that ensures the voice of everyone who is af‐ fected by the EU referendum is heard, regardless of their nationality.”

Debbie Williams said: “I was surprised and humbled to hear that I merited this honour. Time to ditch the masks

WE asked, you answered: our readers will not be wearing masks once it is no longer mandatory.

Based on our Facebook sur‐ vey, more than 70 per cent of our readers will not be wearing masks once it is no longer mandatory, or at least not when they are outside, though most agreed that they will continue to do so in shops, banks, public transport, health centres, public buildings and other crowded

spaces. Many said that common sense should be used to decide when a mask does or doesn’t need to be worn.

The director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Si‐ mon, said that he believes that before July it may not be manda‐ tory to wear masks in Spain.

We asked you if you would continue to wear a mask even if this is the case.

Despite the resounding no, those who do plan to continue wearing a mask will do so until they are convinced that there is no chance of catching the virus.

One reader, who said that she would continue to wear hers, fears that with new variants coming into Spain, it’s too soon to even consider ditch‐ ing the masks.

Another said that most of the masks that peo‐ ple use are not ef‐ fective any‐ way because FACE MASKS: May not be mandatory. they won’t

prevent inhalation or exhalation of a virus which spreads in tiny droplets.

Vaccine update

THE Spanish Ministry of Health issued an update on June 12, saying that according to the latest data, the pandemic is expected to continue to decline thanks to the high rate of vaccinations the country has managed to complete.

A spokesman for the ministry announced that the next age group to focus on will be the 40 to 49-year-olds, he also added that most communities have now relaxed restrictions and there is a gradual return to normality.

The Ministry of Defence has said it will issue the so-called ‘Covid passport’, the certificate that will allow European citizens to move through the EU without further controls to prove they are vaccinated or have passed a PCR or a negative antigen test.

EU Parliament Approves Certificate

THE EU parliament has backed a proposal allowing for digital proof of Covid vaccinations or negative tests. The measures are aimed at enabling restric‐ tion‐free travel within the EU as the summer tourism season be‐ gins.

travel industry and prime tourist sites from another disas‐ trous holiday season. Key travel European destinations like Spain and Greece have led the drive to have the certificate, which will have both paper and digital forms, rapidly intro‐ duced.

Another cyber attack THE Ministry of Labour and Social Economy in Madrid was hit by a cyber‐attack last week.

The Ministry tweeted at 11.27am on June 9, “The Ministry of Labour and Social Economy has been affected by a computer at‐ tack. The technical managers of the Ministry and the National Cryptological Centre are working together to determine the origin and restore normality as soon as possible.”

In March 2020, the Ministry was hit by a cyber‐attack which se‐ riously impacted the Spanish State Employment Service (SEPE).

SEPE was forced to suspend its communications systems across hundreds of offices and postpone thousands of appointments.

Its website was also inaccessible for about two weeks and the ransomware attack delayed thousands of ERTE applications, cer‐ tificates and applications for other benefits just as Spain’s strict Covid‐19 lockdown took hold.

It means that beginning July 1 for 12 months, all EU coun‐ tries must recognise the vaccine certificate. They will be issued free and certify that a person has either been fully vaccinated against the virus, has recently tested negative or has recov‐ ered from the disease.

THE Spanish Postal Service has managed to win two top awards at the World Post & Par‐ cel Awards 2021, specifically in the category of Corporate Social Responsibility for its initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ and in the Postal e‐commerce for its platform Correos Market.

The World Post & Parcel Awards are considered as the Oscars of the postal world and

Correos Awards logistics sector and recognise ex‐ cellence, leadership and the most outstanding proposals made by postal and logistics companies during the previous year. The winners met at a virtu‐ al gala held on Tuesday, June 8, due to pandemic restrictions.

The initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ encompasses all the ini‐ tiatives promoted by Correos during the toughest period of the Covid‐19 pandemic.

Demonstrating its vocation of public service, Correos put itself at the service of society, beyond the development of their usual activity, to get everything neces‐ sary to citizens, the most vulner‐ able groups and professionals who were performing essential tasks at the most critical mo‐ ments.

In the jury’s opinion, “Correos has taken corporate social re‐ sponsibility to another level by encouraging community volun‐ teering among its workers.”

The mobilisation of all em‐ ployees, and especially 3,292 vol‐ unteers, from the very beginning of the pandemic, created a soli‐ darity network and during the 10 weeks of confinement, the vol‐ unteer staff of Correos partici‐ pated in about 500 solidarity ini‐ tiatives, giving logistical and human support to health work‐ ers, the elderly, vulnerable fami‐ lies, schoolchildren and all those groups that needed it.”

Government Wants Electricity Brought Down THE government has said it will request the National Commis‐ sion of Markets and Competition ( CNMC ) to change the so‐ called ‘off‐peak hour’of the price of electricity.

The Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, is committed to ad‐ vancing the off‐peak hour at night of the current electricity rate by hourly sections to 10pm from Monday to Friday, instead of starting at midnight as is the case with the new rate tariff struc‐ ture that came into effect recently.

Belarra pointed out that ‘United, we can request this change,’ which is proposed by Facua, the consumer rights association, and sent to the National Commission of Markets and Competi‐ tion (CNMC) to evaluate its viability.

Spanish Consumer Association OCU and Facua have criticised the new electricity tariffs, which require consumers to use the early morning hours in order to take advantage of the cheapest rate.

Many people would be sur‐ prised to know that in Spain one in three children is at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

Sadly, according to experts, Spain is facing a crisis in child poverty with nearly 2.5 million youngsters being affected.

What is even worse though is that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made these fig‐ ures worse, and it is expected that in 2021 these figures will increase dramatically.

According to studies poor nutrition in young children can prevent them from performing their best at school. Poor nutri‐ tion in the early years of life can bring about irreversible ef‐ fects on growth and even on intellectual development.

According to the Catalan Ombudsman, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has seen attendance in school canteens reduced.

So far this academic year a staggering 2,000 children have benefited from the scheme throughout 250 schools in Spain.

Lottery Thief Arrested by Guardia A LOTTERY ticket thief has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Valencia after buying a house with his winnings from the stolen ticket.

In December 2020, the man had snatched a bag which not on‐ ly contained cash, but also con‐ tained a Lottery ticket for the Christmas special draw. A few days after he had stolen the bag the lottery ticket was awarded a second prize.

The Benemérita began inves‐ tigating after the victim filed a complaint on December 19. The woman had been at a Novelda restaurant and was eating a meal when her handbag was stolen from her. The bag con‐ tained €950 in cash along with a

lottery ticket, which a few days later won a staggering €125,000.

While the victim had only ini‐ tially reported the theft of the handbag, she soon decided to ex‐ tend the complaint on December 22, after she realised that her stolen lottery ticket had won a staggering prize.

was found to have a long history of theft. Officers were able to dis‐ cover that he was living in a house which they believed he had pur‐ chased with his winnings from the stolen lottery ticket.

The man was arrested on May 31. He has now been released with charges after being taken be‐ fore the Court of Instance and In‐ struction number 3 of Alzira and is being investigated for an alleged serious offence of theft.

Primark Signs Sustainable Textiles Plan THE popular retailer has become a founding signatory of Textiles 2030, the UK Sustainable Textile Action Plan launched by WRAP. Over the next decade, this initiative aims to accelerate the fashion and textiles industry’s move towards circularity and significantly re‐ duce the environmental impact of clothing and home fabrics through practical interventions along the textiles chain.

“By signing up to Textiles 2030, Primark is not only committing to taking significant action in relation to its own operations, including by encouraging its customers to use and dispose of clothing and textile products in new, more sustainable ways, but also collaborating with

other signatories through cross‐industry discus‐ sions to accelerate progress towards a circular economy for textiles and reverse the growing carbon impact of textile products,” the compa‐ ny said.

Alongside other signatories, Primark will set targets for reducing whole life emissions, mea‐ sure the impact of its product portfolio, and act on priorities, reporting progress to WRAP an‐ nually. This includes reducing the aggregate greenhouse gas footprint of new products by 50 per cent, sufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement on cli‐ mate change and achieving Net Zero by 2050 at the latest.

€10 Million Emergency Aid SPAIN is about to receive just over €10 million from the Euro‐ pean Commission in emergency aid to finance part of the ex‐ penses incurred from the crisis in Ceuta ‐ around 10,000 mi‐

grants arrived between May 17 and 20.

Almost the entire amount, more than €9 million, will be giv‐ en directly to the autonomous city, which deals with the assis‐

tance of more than 1,000 minors and more than 2,000 adults who live on the streets, according to a report from the local authority.

The rest of the money, ac‐ cording to sources, will be dis‐

tributed between the Secretary of State for Migration in Ceuta (about €800,000) and Defence (€200,000).

The order to allow the mi‐ grants to cross into Ceuta, launched by Morocco to pres‐ sure Spain to change its position on the enclave, led to a humani‐ tarian crisis. Ceuta was com‐ pletely overwhelmed, without resources and without adequate infrastructure. The care of mi‐ nors, who are still housed in warehouses and in emergency annexes, has involved a financial and logistical effort that has far exceeded the capacities of the city.

Medal of honour for the King P R ES I D E N T of Andalucia, Juanma Moreno met with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, at the Port of Cadiz on Mon‐ day June 14 before the monarch travelled to Sevilla to receive Andalucia’s first Medal of Honour.

King Felipe was granted the Medal of Honour be‐ cause he “embodies the most solid affective bond of Andalucia with all the State institutions,” according to the Junta de Andalucia.

Moreno proposed that the King be the first recipi‐ ent of the award.

“The holder of the Crown personifies the principles and values that sustain and reinforce our collective identity as a Spanish nation and that provide Andalucia with the best benchmark of harmony, serenity, enthusi‐ asm and determination with which to face the vicis‐ situdes of the present, un‐ dertake the recovery and working together for the fu‐ ture,” the Junta said in a press release.

“World society in general, and within it Spanish and Andalucian society, is going through one of the most committed moments in con‐ temporary history; a chal‐ lenge that tests, once again, and with unusual harsh‐ ness, organisational skills; levels of resistance as a so‐ cioeconomic system; the soundness and suitability of its institutions; and, as a key element, the collabora‐ tion between them and the cohesion of citizens and their representatives around their shared objec‐ tives.

“The figure of Felipe VI provides Andalucians, in this extraordinary situation, a clear mirror of their strengths and a moral rein‐ forcement of the greatest relevance for the develop‐ ment of their capacities,” the statement added.

Costly Fail To Self-Isolate A costly trip to Spain.

A D E R BY S H I R E mum has been forced to hand over more than £2,000 after she disregarded the requirement to self‐isolate after she made a trip to Spain, and drove 160 miles to Norfolk.

IN a fantastic save, officers from the Guardia Civil have been able to save a 16-month-old baby from drowning in a removable pool in Sevilla.

The accident took place on June 6 and the Guardia Civil were alerted by the coordination centre to the fact that a youngster had possibly drowned. They rushed to the scene of the incident and located the child’s father who was performing CPR. The Guardia Civil officers took charge of the baby and continued to perform CPR manoeuvres. Luckily the child started to breathe slightly.

Medical services also set out to help and as soon as they arrived on the scene they took charge. They quickly rushed the baby to Sevilla Children’s Hospital.

The child’s relatives have expressed their thanks to the Guardia Civil for their excellent work.

P James, aged 50 from Buxton, had left home whilst she was required to be self‐ isolating and has now been made to pay over double the initial fine as she decided to drive her mother‐in‐law all the way to Norfolk.

Ms James had only been fined £1,000 to start with but she refused to pay and even told police that she would not pay it.

Due to her lack of pay‐ ment her case finally made it before a Derby magistrate, as she had failed to pay or indicate a plea.

The case was dealt with quickly and behind closed doors using the Single Jus‐ tice Procedure, which is usu‐ ally reserved for TV licence fines and driving matters.

The hearing at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court took place on March 18, but details have only just been released. At the hear‐ ing Magistrate Paul Dicker‐ son found Miss James guilty and she has had to pay over £2,000.

Ryanair bring Italians RYANAIR, Italy’s number one airline, has announced the addition of three based aircraft, six new routes and over 65 flights every week from Rome Fiumicino to a host of domestic and international destinations including Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga. This represents a further investment of €246 million, which will deliver increased connectivity to the region, playing a key role in the recovery of jobs and the local economy.

“Ryanair remains committed to delivering connectivity to Rome and expects its Summer 2021 schedule, including 78 routes from both Rome airports in total and over 470 departing flights per week, will help boost air traffic in the city and the region, contributing to the recovery of the tourism industry as vaccination programmes continue and Europe reopens in time for the peak holiday season,” the company said on Tuesday June 8.

THE latest edition of the QS World University Ranking for 2022, puts the University of Sevilla in the top 42 per cent worldwide, improving more than six points on last year’s position, and showing a climb of 30 positions on the previous edition, to stand in the bracket of numbers 551-560 of the best universities in the world.

With respect to academic reputation, University of Sevilla shows it continues to climb positions up to 237, improving 22 positions.

It is also worth noting the rise of 60 positions to 548 in the list for international students in the US. This data, together with the increase in the position of US Scientific Publications cited by researchers, shows a recognition of the University of Sevilla at an international level.

The QS World University Rankings assesses universities using six indicators that assess the impact of research, the quality of teaching, internationalisation, the global academic reputation, and the reputation of the contracting companies of their students.

Barcelo Opts For Renewable Energy BARCELO HOTEL GROUP and Endesa have extended their collaboration agreement to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity to all the chain’s hotels in Spain. In 2020, the electricity company supplied energy with a guarantee of renewable origin to the 18 establishments of the Occidental Hotels brand of Barcelo Hotel Group and this year the agreement extends to the electricity consumption contract of the 66 hotels of the hotel chain in Spain.

Approximately 107 GWh of annual consumption at Barcelo Hotel Group facilities in Spain, that is equivalent to the consumption of more than 30,600 homes, will be covered with 100 per cent renewable origin guarantee certificates issued by the National Commission of Markets and Competition.

The two amazing women are Ada de Luque who has beaten breast cancer and Silvia Albújar, who had lung cancer with metastasis in other organs, and they are just two of the 13 final‐ ists that have been selected from almost 400 women from around Spain. All the women have beaten cancer and have signed up for the stunning Pelayo Vida Challenge.

Each year the challenge changes and in 2021 they wel‐ come in the ‘Pelayo Vida 66 North Challenge.’ The challenge has been named in reference to the 66th Parallel North, the fa‐ mous Arctic Circle. The stunning challenge is expected to take be‐ tween 15 and 20 days.

Pub is not off limits

AFTER a judge’s ruling in the UK, a man is now in line for compensation after his former com‐ pany gave him the sack when he was spotted down the pub for a drink while being off sick.

Colin Kane, aged 66, has a serious lung condition which is a result of him being a smoker. He had been a driver for Debmat Surfacing in Newcastle since 2012 and in March 2020 he called in sick.

Later that day though he was spotted by a colleague out and about drinking alcohol and smoking at a social club local to his work‐ place. Colin soon received a call from his bosses but he claimed that ‘he had been in bed all day with his chest.’

This was the beginning of the end and he was soon called into a meeting with his man‐ ager who commented that: “Surely if you had been unfit for work and on antibiotics, you shouldn’t be in the pub.”

Colin admitted that he had nipped to the pub, but believed that he had done nothing wrong as he had not been there for very long. Disciplinary action was started in July 2020, and the driver was sacked for being dishonest and breaching the company’s rules, however, Judge Andrea Pitt found that Colin had been unfairly dismissed as the rules of the company did not explicitly state that workers, when they are off sick, cannot socialise.

She commented on the matter and said: “There is nothing in the disciplinary proce‐

She also found that the company made an error in their investigation as they had incor‐ rectly recorded the day on which Colin had phoned in.

UK to donate vaccines

THE UK will donate 100 million surplus coronavirus vaccine dos‐ es to the world within the next year, including five million begin‐ ning in the coming weeks, the Prime Minister announced on Thursday June 10.

The donation is in addition to UK work to support Oxford‐As‐ traZeneca’s contribution to fight‐ ing Covid and the UK’s financial backing to COVAX. The pledge came ahead of the G7 Summit. Last week, Prime

Spanish Family Rescued In Dubai POLICE in Dubai have rescued a Spanish family after their yacht broke down at sea near a rock breaker off Jumeirah coast. The yacht is said to have broken down due to a technical issue, however, the police’s maritime rescue patrols in Dubai quickly responded to stop them from colliding into a rock breaker in strong currents and high winds.

The Director of Ports Police Station, Colonel Dr Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, said the Commandand-Control Centre received the family’s distress call when their yacht broke down. “The Station, which has nine marine points in Dubai, immediately responded to the call and handled the situation with extreme finesse and professionalism,” he confirmed.

He said the quick response of the rescue teams helped to save their lives as high winds and strong currents would have caused the vessel to crash into the breaker. Six family members were aboard the yacht, including children.

THERE have been rum‐ blings of discontent from Europe concerning clever accounting by mainly US companies such as Ama‐ zon and Google.

France, Spain and the UK either set or intended to in‐ troduce special tax laws which saw a decision by the US to retaliate with the imposition of huge tariff in‐ creases on certain goods.

Now at a meeting in the UK, G7 Finance Ministers agreed an in‐principle deal

to tax international com‐ panies on profits relating to in country sales.

Currently a company can earn huge amounts of money in one country but pay very little tax there because they could set up their headquarters in an‐ other country and channel profits into there and pay lower rates of tax.

Harvesting plastic soup CREATED 18 months ago, Gravity Wave is a Spanish company dedicated to the col‐ lection of plastic from the seabed and transforming it in‐ to useful objects.

The brother and sister team have teamed up with Enaleia, a foundation that works with traditional fishermen from the Mediterranean Sea who rather than throwing back plastic caught in their nets, sends it to Gravity Wave for transformation.

They started small and used the reformed plastic to make cases for mobile phones, but are now branching out as their contact with more than 100 fishermen means that they have so far received some 70,000 kilos of plastic.

LATEST PLANS: Minister Yolanda Díaz made the announcement on June 8.

IN a video speech on Tuesday June 8, Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz announced the latest plans to curb youth unem‐ ployment in Spain.

With unemployment amongst those aged under 25 fast approaching 40 per cent, the largest number of unem‐ ployed in that age group in the European Union, the gov‐ ernment has published an 85 page document pledging €4.9 billion to tackle the problem over the next six years.

Predictions come true

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT TWO of Leapy’s predictions came to pass this week. When originally columned they were of course met with the predictable accusations of racism from those who exploit the term for anything they don’t agree with!

One forecast, which I made almost a year ago, stated that as soon as the fans were allowed back into the football grounds they would let the players and officials know exactly what they thought of their knee taking, racist provoking homage to a Marxist organisation and criminal thug. Well.

You only have to tune in to see how the truth of that statement has come to pass. In a blatant attempt to instigate the mass suppression of free speech the FA has issued a statement actually directing the fans not to boo the players. They also added that they could issue bans on those who ignore the warning. At their peril I would say!

It’s not totally the fault of the teams of course. Referring to the topic in an interview Gary Neville, the England team manager, righteously spouted

that his players would ‘continue to take the knee against any form of racism in the game.’ This well‐ meaning, but utterly naïve comment from the man in charge, just shows how easily they have all been duped into making what is basically a political statement before the start of every match. These fan demonstrations are not derisory howls from thousands of racists; they are the reaction from a rapidly growing populace realising they are all being taken for mugs!

rocket science! Anyway I was delighted to see that politicians, including Boris Johnson, are now voicing the same concerns and admitting they should have perhaps not have been quite so lax in allowing this situation to materialise. Bit late now.

At the time of writing it appears their erroneous decisions will put the whole nation, with all its accompanying misery and economic woes, back yet another month. Once again minority appeasement and ‘woke’ ideals have resulted in the detriment of the long suffering majority!

In closing, I do find it interesting, but not unexpected, that when something I have forecast in the past comes to fruition there is a deafening silence from the former dissenters! Perhaps the silent majority would let us know their views on these matters. Don’t worry; you won’t be arrested for speaking freely. Not yet anyway!

This is just complete madness MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION

Views of a Grumpy Old Man MY pal in Glasgow had a problem with his iPad so he went to his local Apple store and was told he couldn’t enter without an appointment. I thought it was strange but gave it no more thought ‘til I needed a new battery for Mrs S’ iPhone. I rang my local store, which is a 20-minute drive from home. The website gave me the 952 local Spanish number and I went through the usual press 1 for this, 2 for that, until I finally got a human being.

We went through the usual pleasantries, he told me his name and how he was going to be absolutely delighted to help me. I explained I needed a new battery, he asked where I was located and he then said there were no appointments - ever! I said, can you hear what you are saying, this is madness, can I speak to the store manager please?

I’m then informed that’s not possible as he’s not actually at that branch but in the Philippines. But I phoned my local store. Yes but appointments are done from the Philippines. OK put me through to a supervisor and after about 10 minutes on hold I am greeted

by Helen who has been made aware of my

problem and she is going to help me. Are you in the Philippines too? Nope I’m in another country! Anyway Michael when would you like an appointment? When can I have one?

Helen tells me any time tomorrow. But I thought there were none ever? We booked one for the next day. I asked why I had to go through this song and dance. She couldn’t explain so we left it at that.

Next day the store entrance looked like a scene from the movie Contagion with security guards taking your temperature, a ziggyzaggy entry system, then plastic gloves, hand sanitiser on top of the gloves and this is all before you have spoken to an Apple employee.

Finally they take the ‘phone away and tell me to come back in 90 minutes which I do only to be told it’s not ready for another 30 minutes. When I return it’s ready and they let me enter again with more gloves and more sanitiser. When I get the ‘phone the screen is cracked all over. Oh yes, it must have been cracked when it came in. NO IT WASN’T! The guy disappears for a few minutes then says, OK we will replace it free of charge, like he’s doing me a favour! Of course you will, you broke it! After another two hours, more gloves and sanitiser my ‘phone is ready. So that was five hours of my life and €250 spent on bored purchases in the mall!

THE EUROWEEKLY NEWS is urging its readers to support local businesses in the com‐ munity by going local now that the lockdown has ended and for your all your shop‐ ping this year, instead of feeding online giants and su‐ perstores.

We challenge you to redis‐ cover your local high streets, markets, butchers, greengro‐ cers and all of the wonderful‐ ly quirky independent busi‐ nesses in your area.

Now that the Covid‐19 pan‐ demic appears to be under control, it is a good idea to try and support many local busi‐ nesses by ordering online and making use of any click and col‐ lect services they can operate, especially if you are unable to get out due to health reasons or any other restrictions.

The joy of shopping local means that independent busi‐ nesses can help support the local community.

Although it may be a euro or two cheaper elsewhere or online, consider where your money is actually going.

By shopping at an indepen‐ dent store you’re putting food on a local family’s table, and there is no better time than now to give back to your community by making a small gesture and shopping in this

way.

Many local stores support local charities, support and sponsor local sports teams and in many cases the small independent stores are actu‐ ally much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous gen‐ erations and support not just the current owner but the generation before.

For those stores which are new, that extra couple of eu‐ ros spent there are support‐ ing someone’s dream and ambition, and also the courage it took them to step out alone, which is no easy task. It takes quite a large chunk of money to set up an independent store and com‐ pete with the multinational and chains.

So be sure to pre‐order your meat from a local butch‐ er and get your spuds from a local greengrocer, let us re‐ vive that community spirit and get to know our neigh‐ bours again.

You could also consider purchasing gift vouchers from local businesses to help them over the coming weeks, think‐ ing outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas.

Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a lo‐

cal studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an online study course for someone looking to change their career path.

As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is important too. Whilst it’s nice to give a glamourous gift perhaps pre‐ paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping people alleviate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times.

Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays lo‐ cal, and it strengthens the lo‐ cal economy in two ways.

First, buying local keeps mon‐ ey circulating within the local economy.

Studies have shown that lo‐ cal businesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as they create locally owned supply chains and invest in their employees.

Data shows that local retail‐ ers return 52 per cent of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to just 14 per cent for national chain retailers.

Money circulating through

the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction. For exam‐ ple, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn pre‐ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employ‐ ees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbour‐ hood hardware store. This ex‐ ample illustrates how the re‐ circulation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and com‐ munities.

Buying local also fuels new employment and job oppor‐ tunities for people within our community.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

A fantastic example of how to support your local commu‐ nity is with a Charity Gift cer‐ tificate, why not donate to your loved one’s favourite cause.

Just remember to still fol‐ low the latest government ad‐ vice and any guidance busi‐ nesses have to keep everyone safe in the future.

THE easing of restrictions both in Spain and in the UK is remarkable ‐ and nice ‐ for several reasons. But the most important is: how much the simple pleasures of everyday life get lost in the familiarity of daily routine.

Only when we are denied them do we re‐ alise what a complicated life we lead. It is this latter element that shocks us most. Of the hun‐ dreds of minor, even flippant, activities we in‐ dulge in, we’re suddenly unable to replace them with anything useful or satisfying. Even working from home fails to make up for miss‐ ing colleagues, chit‐chat and... just everyday life.

So, when released from these tortuous re‐ strictions, we happily revel in anything that is different. Especially when it involves other peo‐ ple in similar situations. It suddenly seems as if having fun is everywhere and so easy to find.

Voices seem louder and more important.

Laughter is easier to come by and everyone has stories of how they ‘survived’. Boredom is a long way off, and that’s the biggest difference

of all.

At the same time, we learn that the ‘secret of happiness’ has finally been discovered. Neu‐ roscientists from University College London used a crowd‐sourced gaming app and MRI scans of people’s brains to develop a rather long‐winded formula (that I’ll summarise for you here: @£!$%!*£@#). Translated into plain language, it means that avoiding high expecta‐ tions is the key to happiness.

But for a non‐neuroscientist friend with a very long, fascinating life behind him, happiness depends more on personality. For him, some people are more inclined and able to be happy than others. Resentful and ungrateful types are seldom pleased with the world or their place in it even if they are comfortably off. (Yes, I am looking at you, Dominic Cummins!)

In summary, then, according to the latest re‐ search: don’t get your hopes up and you’ll have good times. Or as my granny used to say: “Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.”

LACK OF RESPECT Dear Sir/ Madam, I’d like to ask you, do you know what’s going on regarding respectability of the British Blue Badge in Spain?

It looks like a horrible disrespect of every disabled person, a holder of the Blue Badge on the Spanish soil.

Very recently I came across the Local Police banning cars parked in boxes reserved for the disabled of English origin.

As an argument the police officer stated the Blue Badge is no longer valid here regarding Brexit. No matter the one person is disabled but what it does is no respect to the individual person’s health condition.

This works against the human rights!

Worldwide, disabled people are being fully respected. Nobody objects to it.

So why does the Local Police officer have the right to order the car marked with the sign of health disability, to not park in places dedicated to those people?

I would be grateful if you, via your newspaper would alarm the Spanish world and thus reinforce it via the international human rights institution to intervene.

Hello Leapy, I cannot resist commenting on how ‘things have (understandably) changed’ re attitudes of the present day police.

I was a policewoman in the late 1960s ie during the Teddy-boy era and was stationed at a seaside resort. One particular Bank Holiday weekend the town was invaded by train loads of Teddy-boys and a fight was taking place in a side street. I was instructed not to allow any more ‘onlookers’ to go in that direction.

A gang of youths was causing trouble around some shops. After telling them off he said ‘Follow me to the Police Station’ and in a line without abuse they did so, can you imagine the youth of today doing this?

Exercising your jaw ALTHOUGH banned in Singapore, many people love chewing gum whilst going about their daily business.

For some it’s a habit, whilst others love the range of juicy flavours that certain gums can offer.

But most won’t have realised that chewing gum whilst you walk could help you to lose weight.

According to new research, when you chew gum you actually walk faster which in turn means that your body burns more calories.

Walking faster also increases your heart rate which is another important factor in losing weight.

The study, from Waseda University in Tokyo, was the first to look at how chewing gum affects the body whilst walking. All previous studies had set out to discover how it impacts the body whilst resting.

The research team which presented the findings at the recent European Congress of Obesity in Vienna concluded that: “chewing gum while walking affects a number of physical and physiological functions in men and women of all ages.”

This is welcome news for the chewing gum industry and not the first time that chewing gum has been associated with health benefits.

Previous studies have found that chewing gum on a regular basis can help to reduce stress and protect your teeth from plaque and decay.

Not so sweet

Sugar is a natural component of food like fruits and vegetables, but eating too much of it comes with consequences. We are now a lot more aware of the risks of too many sweets, but there are still plenty of myths about sugar and what it does to us.

The industry has long denied that it plays any role in chronic disease, but research suggests otherwise. Studies have connected excessive consumption with memory loss, high blood pressure, heart disease, cavities and weight gain. Most people could eat less sugar, less often.

However, quitting sugar completely is unlikely to improve your health. Some sugar-free diets encourage people to cut out foods such as fruit and dairy, without evidence to support their exclusion.

But whole fruit is a great source of fructose as well as other essential minerals and vitamins. However, research does show that reducing your intake of sugar in drinks such as coffee, tea and fizzy drinks does have a positive effect on your health.

So, if you want to start somewhere, this is the place. This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the sugar-like flavour that you have come to love. Sugar substitutes such as raw honey or stevia can mean you can still en-

joy the taste, without the unhealthy consequences.

Remember however, that as with carbs and fat, it’s important not to quickly and completely eliminate any one food group from your diet.

In December, the band playing Carols in the Square.

FOLLOWING the Royal British Legion Concert Band’s success in December playing for the Carols in the Square both in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, the band was ready to start rehearsing again in January, but once more because of Covid restrictions they had to cancel all activity until the end of March.

The band is now in rehearsals for the Joint Armed Forces Day Service in Orihuela Cathedral on Saturday June 26. This is the third time that this important event has taken place and gives the opportunity to support and pray for the work of the many who serve in their respective countries’ armed forces as sailors, soldiers, airmen and here in Spain members of the Guardia Civil, the National and Local Police

forces. For the future the band will be very busy later in the year with a centenary concert in Alicante, poppy appeal launches in Benidorm and La Zenia Boulevard, the annual remembrance services in November and of course Carols in the Square, Torrevieja in December.

They are always looking for more musicians to join them in the string, woodwind and brass sections. Attacks of Sleep and Weakness in Dogs NARCOLEPSY and cataplexy are disorders of the nervous system in the dog. Narcolepsy occurs when an animal suffers from exces‐ sive daytime sleepiness, weakness, or brief losses of conscious‐ ness. The episodes are brief and go away by themselves. Brain MRI should be strongly considered in sporadic cases of narcolepsy‐cataplexy because sometimes brain tumours could be the reason.

These attacks can be unpleasant but they are not life‐threaten‐ ing. If the episodes are frequent, there may be medications your veterinarian can prescribe to help control the frequency or duration of the attacks.

Electric Motorcycle With 2 Engines THE world of electric motorcycles just keeps on expanding, and now, American brand Zaiser Motors, a pioneer in the world of electric mo‐ torcycles, is developing new de‐ signs, new technology, and the possibility of a longer distance trav‐ elled on the battery life, or autono‐ my.

They have developed a new model, the Electrocycle, one that stands out for its imposing appear‐ ance, reminiscent of a Harley‐ Davidson, and there is no doubt that elegance and retro air are two of its most obvious features.

A unique feature of the Electro‐ cycle is that it is built in a modular

way, meaning that its parts can easily be replaced if they suffer wear and tear over time.

Its wheelbase is quite wide and striking, as it contributes to high‐ lighting the long silhouette of the vehicle, but beyond the aesthetics of this novelty, what is most sur‐ prising comes from a technological point of view, and it is that, as Zais‐ er assures, which will be the first electric motorcycle in the world equipped to come fully‐equipped with two motors, with one in‐ stalled on each wheel.

In terms of performance, the Electrocycle can go from 0 to 100 kmh in 3.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 193 kmh, and also worth noting is that this bike will have a removable battery whose capacity is 17.5 kWh, which will provide the possibility of fast charging, but above all, the crowning glory has to be the fact it can do a distance of 500km on one charge, a figure that is currently still very unusual in the electric motorcycle sector.

Zaiser Motors has a launch date planned for introducing the Elec‐ trocycle that is between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, and they have stated that the price will be in the region of €20,500.

by Mark Slack IN the current climate (if you’ll excuse the pun) SUVs are viewed as environmental villains, automotive polluters of the very worst kind. The truth is that many SUVs are now hybrids with smaller combustion engines, so the days of every SUV being over‐ sized with a large petrol or diesel addicted engine is not the full story.

Kia’s newly launched Sorento models and the self‐ charging hybrid Sorento in particular is a good case in point. Its 1.6‐litre petrol en‐ gine is bolstered by a 64 kw battery de‐

Kia Sorento is imposing livering 40 mpg economy in a very spacious SUV with prop‐ er off‐road capability and a real family holdall. Hybrids re‐ move any range concerns and the need for an expensive home charger, or dealing with our somewhat fragmented (I’m being polite!) public charging network.

Priced from €45,802 (£39,360) the Sorento line‐up offers both plug‐in and self‐ charging hybrids and all mod‐ els look suitably imposing.

Standard equipment across the range of Sorento models includes heated seats

and steering wheel, smart cruise control, LED headlights, reversing camera, dual zone air conditioning for all seats, auto dimming mirrors, auto wipers and lights, Apple Car Play and Android Auto.

My top of the range self‐ charging hybrid version is the automotive equivalent of the Ritz, adding such items as leather, power adjustment of the seats, privacy glass, heat‐ ed rear seats, ventilated front seats, keyless entry and start, power tailgate, powered fold‐ ing door mirrors, along with navigation, wireless charging and a Bose sound system on‐ to the entry level list of equip‐ ment.

Costing €54,629 (£46,945) you would expect it to be well equipped and when you add all the above items to the level of tech, it doesn’t disappoint.

There are a myriad of safety features including a head‐up display and a clever speed limit based intelligent cruise control, all‐wheel‐drive and the clever hybrid system which charges itself from the

car’s engine. It not only re‐ moves those range concerns but provides a cleaner emis‐ sions record than would nor‐ mally be the case with a more traditionally powered SUV of this size.

If I were being picky about the Sorento then some of the controls are not especially in‐ tuitive and the layout of the dash controls is a little fussy, but ownership would soon bring familiarity. It is a minor point in a car that has a dis‐ tinct feeling of luxury with its comfortable, quilted leather seats, hushed interior and so‐ lidity of build quality.
