Bous cancelled again Oliva Arts and Crafts fair

THERE will be no Bous a la Mar bull-running at the harbour during Denias’ fiestas next month.

“This will be another summer without celebrating the fiestas as we know them,” councillor Oscar Mengual announced.

Instead, the town hall has programmed alternative cultural events for all ages with all health and safety measures in place.

DIFFERENT: Denia’s annual fiestas traditionally feature harbourside bull-running.

“This will at least allow us all to enjoy some leisure and en-

tertainment between July 2 and 11,” Mengual said.

THE Covid situation has improved to such an extent that Oliva has decided to celebrate its traditional Fair and Fiestas.

This will be held between June 18 and 20 in four different areas to avoid large gatherings, with Avenida de Lluis Vives reserved for an Arts and Crafts fair which opens on Friday June 18 at 5 pm.

Thirty craftspeople are expected to set up their stalls in

the section in front of the Mercado Municipal covered market.

On Saturday June 19 and Sunday June 20 the fair will be open from 11am until 2pm and between 5pm and 10pm, although closing a little earlier on the last day.

Concerts, shows, activities for children and a book and literature fair will be held in Paseo de Jaume I, Parque de la Estación

Face masks could go next month A good day’s fishing THE regional government will press to eliminate the use of face masks outdoors in July.

Ximo Puig, the Valencian Community’s president revealed at the beginning of this week in an interview with the regional radio station, A Punt, that he intends to put forward the request at the next meeting of the Inter-territorial Health Committee.

“The Valencian Community has the lowest accumulated Covid incidence rate in Spain with 40 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants,” he reminded his interviewer. “This makes it a safe destination that guarantees stability,” Puig added.

Valencia’s regional government hopes that next month it will be possible to visit beaches, rivers, countryside and mountains where there is natural ventila-

tion and social distancing can be guaranteed.

The Generalitat president pointed out that, according to experts, masks in surroundings like these “play absolutely no part” in catching or transmitting the coronavirus.

Puig nevertheless stressed during the A Punt interview that ventilation and fresh air were vitally important.

The Valencian president was characteristically cautious about no longer wearing a mask inside towns and cities, as masks were a symbol that the virus “is still out there,” he said. “It is essential to remember that a battle is still being fought against the coronavirus and the face mask image is fundamental,” Puig emphasised.

THE Teulada-Moraira’s latest competition meeting started off with a muggy overcast day and a 16ºC temperature.

As the morning wore on the weather changed and they eventually had a bright sunny day with temperatures rising to 23ºC but with no flow on the river as they fished Section A3 of the Jucar in the neighbouring province of Valencia.

There were 10 contestants, with Steve Hartwell reeling in a best total weight of 9.4 kilos. Second best total weight went to the club secretary Jeff Richards with 8.7 kilos.

There were no dry nets and overall it was not a bad day’s fishing with 52 fish caught and a total weight of 38 kilos.

The next match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 23.

Municipal aid BENIDORM Town Hall approved a payment of €165,000 in municipal aid to families affected by the economic effects of the Covid pandemic. With grants ranging from €600 to €1,350 according to family size and circumstances, this will be the 12th allocation made available so far this year.

No trains MAYORS and councillors from the Marina Alta and La SaforValldigna demonstrated peacefully in front of Gandia’s railway station, complaining that the national government consistently neglects the region’s local trains. They also pointed out that the Marina Alta and La Safor are the only European areas without rail transport.

JAB FOR JUSTIN

MY name is Justin Boland, son of Maurice and Wendy, I grew up on the Costa Del Sol, in the Marbella area from when I was six years old. I’m now 45 (this week was my birthday - 13/06).

I am a father of two boys, I work as Sales Director for world famous Engel and Völkers, and Covid-19 just tried to kill me!

Generally, I live a healthy lifestyle, I don’t smoke, I don’t really drink, I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit. I don’t have any underlying conditions!

On Tuesday May 18 I’d had my typical session of paddle tennis. I have to admit I was feeling a little bit unusual, not very energetic and extremely hungry, which was not typical for me.

By the time I got home my energy level had dropped and I put it down to just being hungry. I had my dinner and went to lie down when I suddenly started shaking.

My fever went right up. I took paracetamol and went to bed.

The next morning I woke up feeling great. No temperature, but by about 4pm I started to feel unwell again and my fever picked up. I decided to get a rapid Covid test, which came back negative.

By May 25, I couldn’t resist any more and went to Hospiten in Estepona and to my shock, I received a call - I had Covid-19.

Because I had already been sick a few days they recommended that I go to the ward and let the doctor inspect me properly. I stayed in the hospital a couple of days, during which I started to feel much worse.

On May 28, the doctor recommended that I go to Santa Elena hospital in Malaga as they had the best treatment for Covid.

On my arrival to Santa Elena,I was immediately put into ICU. I was hooked up to machines and put on oxygen. I was terrified at this point. The doctors had warned me if the oxygen was not sufficient to deal with the virus that was attacking my lungs they might have to induce a coma and put me on a mechanical ventilator!

HOSPITALISED: I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team.

HEALTHY: I play sports at least three times a week and pride myself on staying fit.

It was then the realisation struck home and I began to worry, will I die whilst in a coma?

On May 30, they decided to put me into a temporary coma in order to save my life.

Being young and as I said before healthy, it took nine days altogether when my body started to respond and decided it was time to come out.

I remember waking up, I had no idea what had happened. I had no idea why I was even under sedation (it took a while to come back to me) it was really odd. But what was really distressing and this is something quite normal, is for the time I was under, I had lost the ability to be able to physically walk, use my hands and my general condition was one of a very frail old man. Now understanding the fact that recovery will take a little while of course I understand

things better.

I wanted to share my story because so many people out there think it would never happen to them. Well that’s just simply wrong and I’m proof of that. I am giving a real warning to people out there.

Get Vaccinated!

Unfortunately I was not in the age category to be vaccinated at that point. But I can promise you one thing if I had been none of this would’ve happened.

Just imagine the person, simply by touching me they actually nearly killed me. You have the obligation as a human to help protect your fellow humans.

I will be grateful for the rest of my life to the ICU team and I

for one am for ever thankful to be given a second chance in life.

The English-speaking nurses work round the clock, they are diligent, humane and altogether amazing. Without their love and care I don’t know how I would’ve got through the most difficult 14 days of my life.

Thank you so much, all of you!

I of course want to also thank the Doctor who made that very difficult decision to save my life and for that I will never forget.

Thank you Dr Elias Ceravola, you’re an amazing man and I will never forget you. You saved my life!

Something really important to note. Even though the hospital has some of the most incredible emergency equipment, some of the more basic day-today things are missing as they are slowly investing in the hospital, for example some new wardrobes.

The reassurance is so helpful but without the simple basics it makes their jobs quite difficult.

Their focus should be solely on your health, so I think by getting the wardrobes, this is a small gesture where we will be helping them!

Any donation will be greatly received, €5, €10, €20 whatever works for you. Even if we can get five wardrobes, that’s better than nothing!

Lions support Gandia men’s refuge THE Franciscan Shelter for Men in Gandia cares for around 50 homeless men, many suffering from mental or physical illness.

The Shelter is run by a small team of Fran‐ ciscan brothers who were in complete lock‐ down throughout the Covid pandemic but have done an amazing job.

Their usual funding sources were also im‐ pacted by the pandem‐ ic as charity shops in particular have been unable to trade and could not donate.

When the Shelter approached Teulada‐ Moraira Lions at a point where they were desperate for supplies, the Lions were able to donate funds at short notice which enabled a volunteer to do some much‐needed shop‐ ping.

Such donations by the Teulada‐Moraira Lions are only possible because of the gen‐ erosity of our support‐ ers. Our popular chari‐ ty shop, the Lion’s Den, is open again and can be found beneath the Pepe La Sal super‐ market on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra Moraira‐Teulada.

Light at the end of the tunnel THE Valencian Community’s tourism sector sees light at the end of the tun‐ nel after 15 months of the Covid pan‐ demic.

“The worst is over,” agreed hoteliers and representatives from the region’s business and tourism associations at‐ tending the Eighth Tourism Seminar in Benidorm.

The controlled pandemic, the rapidly‐ advancing vaccination campaign and the launch of the European Union’s Covid passport on July 1 were the keys to recovery, they maintained.

All present put their faith in the Dig‐ ital Green Certificate that will facili‐ tate safe and free movement of citi‐ zens from member states by confirming that they have either been vaccinated against Covid, received a negative test result or recovered from

the coronavirus.

Tourist demand from EU states would soar, predicted Hosbec’s president Toni Mayor.

“This will help to mitigate the impact of the British ‘blockade’ and open up a potential market of 400 million trav‐ ellers who have been saving for months and want a holiday,” Mayor added.

The Hosbec president’s reasoning was supported by Jose Luis Zoreda, execu‐ tive vice‐president of Exceltur, a non‐ profit body composed of the chairmen of 33 leading Spanish tourist sector groups and companies.

“There is no reason to think that Eu‐ rope is not going to have a significant upturn, judging by the precedent set by the US and some Asian countries where tourism had increased rapidly,” Zoreda said.

5,000 Counterfeit Items seized

LOCAL POLICE in the Valencian municipality of Manises have de‐ tained a local man who is charged with being the suspected head of an organisation that was specialised in importing counter‐ feit goods with the intention of selling them on the street.

His arrest was the result of a special surveillance operation launched by the Local Police of the town to investigate reports of the suspected sale of counterfeit wares in the area, which was harming the business of local stores.

The officers subsequently raid‐ ed a warehouse where they dis‐ covered and seized a collection of more than 5,000 counterfeit items, which officers calculated would have an estimated street sale value of €200,000.

Among the seized counterfeit items were both clothing and shoes from large fashion firms and recognised brands in the in‐ dustry, as well as accessories and cosmetics, such as perfumes, all falsified and of course, without any type of guarantee for the consumer.

The Holy Grail In Valencia

THE first performance of The Holy Grail in Valencia by artist Dr Maria Gomez, was a key part of the celebration of the first Cultur‐ al Fortnight regarding ‘The Way of the Holy Grail’ in the presti‐ gious modernist building of the ‘Mercado de Colon’ in the city.

The Mediterranean city of Va‐ lencia has kept the Holy Grail in its metropolitan Cathedral since 1437 and has ended the special fortnight with a spectacular artistic event.

Multi‐media artist, Dr María Gómez, dazzled the public with an artistic performance surrounded by expert plastic artists, art critics and the general public in the ‘Mer‐ cado de Colón,’ an impressive modernist building from 1914.

She has a large collection of canvases dedicated to the most desired object of the Western Middle Ages.

€10 Million Emergency Aid SPAIN is about to receive just over €10 mil‐ lion from the European Commission in emergency aid to finance part of the ex‐ penses incurred from the crisis in Ceuta ‐ around 10,000 migrants arrived between May 17 and 20.

Almost the entire amount, more than €9 million, will be given directly to the au‐ Assisting migrants. tonomous city, which deals with the assis‐ tance of more than 1,000 minors and more than 2,000 adults who live on the streets, according to a report from the local authority.

The rest of the money, according to sources, will be distributed between the Secretary of State for Migration in Ceuta (about €800,000) and Defence (€200,000).

The order to allow the migrants to cross into Ceuta, launched by Morocco to pressure Spain to change its position on the enclave, led to a humanitarian crisis. Ceuta was completely overwhelmed, without resources and without ad‐ equate infrastructure. The care of minors, who are still housed in warehouses and in emergency annexes, has involved a financial and logistical effort that has far exceeded the capacities of the city.

Medal of honour for the King

PRESIDENT of Andalucia, Juanma Moreno met with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, at the Port of Cadiz on Monday June 14 before the monarch travelled to Sevilla to receive Andalucia’s first Medal of Honour.

King Felipe was granted the Medal of Honour because he “embodies the most solid affective bond of Andalucia with all the State institutions,” according to the Jun‐ ta de Andalucia.

Moreno proposed that the King be the first recipient of the award.

“The holder of the Crown personifies the principles and values that sustain and rein‐ force our collective identity as a Spanish na‐ tion and that provide Andalucia with the best benchmark of harmony, serenity, en‐ thusiasm and determination with which to face the vicissitudes of the present, under‐ take the recovery and working together for the future,” the Junta said in a press re‐ lease.

KING FELIPE VI: Travelled to Sevilla to receive his award.

Time to ditch the masks WE asked, you answered: our readers will not be wearing masks once it is no longer mandatory.

Based on our Facebook sur‐ vey, more than 70 per cent of our readers will not be wearing masks once it is no longer mandatory, or at least not when they are outside, though most agreed that they will continue to do so in shops, banks, public

transport, health centres, public buildings and other crowded spaces. Many said that common sense should be used to decide when a mask does or doesn’t need to be worn.

The director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Si‐ mon, said that he believes that before July it may not be manda‐ tory to wear masks in Spain.

We asked you if you would continue to wear a mask even if this is the case.

Despite the resounding no, those who do plan to continue wearing a mask will do so until they are convinced that there is no chance of catching the virus.

Police Hunt Man With Gun

SPANISH police are looking for a 22‐year‐old man with multi‐ ple criminal records who was last seen in the Barrio del Cristo neighbourhood of Va‐ lencia, who, according to sources frequents the munici‐ palities of Godelleta, Cañada, Paterna, Alfafar, and Aldaia,

and usually carries weapons.

The young Uruguayan na‐ tional was born in 1999, and has been observed boasting on social networks about owning firearms, including an HK 9 millimetre pistol that he has displayed in several videos, and has even gone as

Beach Thieves Caught Out FIVE people have been arrested after they tar‐ geted beachgoers and attempted to steal mo‐ bile phones and money on El Postiguet beach in Alicante.

The thefts occurred on June 7 in two separate incidents with the first occurring at around 2.30pm. Officers were patrolling in the beach area when they were notified by a lifeguard that he had just seen people stealing multiple ob‐ jects.

The Local Police started to search the area af‐ ter the lifeguard was able to give detailed de‐ scriptions of the possible thieves, locating three of them on the promenade, who as soon as they realised that the police were in the area fled the scene.

As they fled, they threw the objects that they had allegedly stolen, to the ground as they at‐ tempted to avoid the police. This was in vain though as officers soon managed to catch up

PRIME MINISTER Boris John‐ son met Spanish President Pe‐ dro Sanchez at the NATO Sum‐ mit in Brussels on June 14.

Sanchez was also due to meet with US President Joe Biden, but the encounter was reduced to a photo opportunity of the two leaders walking side‐by‐side.

Sanchez is one of the few Eu‐ ropean leaders who has yet to have a phone call, or a meeting, with Biden. The Spanish Presi‐ dent’s meeting with Boris John‐ son was however more substan‐ tive.

“The leaders discussed their shared commitment to deepen‐ ing the already strong UK‐Spain bilateral relationship across a huge range of issues including

trade, defence and security.

They also said they would con‐ tinue to work together to tackle Covid.

“They agreed that the political agreement on Gibraltar, reached on December 31, provided a framework for a future agree‐

ment with the EU and the Prime Minister thanked Sanchez for his pragmatic approach on this is‐ sue.

THE National Police have warned of the danger associat‐ ed with the consumption of ni‐ trogen oxide, better known as laughing gas, after two serious accidents occurred in Marbella, Malaga, between young people who consumed the substance and who have been injured after supposedly having jumped into the void, in less than 24 hours.

Nitrogen oxide is a colourless substance with a slightly sweet odour that occurs both in liquid form and in compressed gas.

Legally it is used in small quanti‐ ties as an anaesthetic for pain‐ less operations by dentists or al‐ so for industrial purposes in baking or aesthetics.

However, in recent years, the consumption of ‘laughing gas’ among young people at parties has become fashionable, as it is relatively cheap ‐ between €3 and €5 a dose.

By inhaling the gas, usually through coloured balloons, the consumer gets feelings of intoxi‐ cation, joy or daze.

THE mayor of Alicante is backing the city as the sailing capital of the world, as they bid farewell to Ocean Race Europe teams for the final leg of the race, which kicked off on Sunday, June 13.

Mayor Luis Barcala along with Deputy Mayor Mari Carmen Sánchez bid farewell to the differ‐ ent crews as they headed on their way to Genoa.

The mayor commenting on the stunning event highlighted that: “Alicante is today the sailing capital of the world. This is an event that serves as a loudspeak‐ er to show the world that we are ready and open to receive all types of tourism.”

ACCORDING to reports over 200,000 people on ERTE face the prospect of not being able to return to their previous job.

The ERTE (Expediente de Regulación Temporal de Empleo) agreement was brought about in a bid to fight back against the employment issues created by the coronavirus pandemic. It is believed that almost 500,000 people are still under the ERTE umbrella.

Rocio’s killer confesses

THE ex‐boyfriend of Rocío Caíz Pozo, the 17‐year‐old girl who disappeared on Thursday June 3 in Martín de la Jara, Sevilla, has confessed to the Guardia Civil that he killed her on the same day she disappeared.

The 23‐year‐old Romanian

national appeared on June 10 at the Estepa Guardia Civil bar‐ racks and declared that he killed the young woman the same night that she had al‐ legedly slept at home, with a knife that he threw into a con‐ tainer and that could not be lo‐

cated. In addition, he has speci‐ fied that he dismembered the body and threw bags in various places on the outskirts of the town, and then went home to sleep.

In the morning, Rocío’s mother called him because she could not locate her and he told her that she had spent the night there, but that when he woke up she had left and did not know where she was.

Ana, a sister of the deceased, received a message allegedly sent by Rocío in which she told her that she had left for the province of Badajoz with a young man she had met months before, and asked that her ex‐boyfriend take care of their son. Rocío’s family never believed that this message was sent by the young woman, and suspected that her Facebook profile password had been stolen since her mobile was turned off.

Young Rocío Caíz is the 18th victim of gender violence in Spain and her four‐month‐old son, the seventh orphan for the same reason so far this year.

This is personally im‐ portant to the players and the values the team collectively represents. This gesture of unity and fighting against inequality can be traced back as far as the 18th century. It is not new and English football has made it very clear that it does not view this as being aligned to a polit‐ ical organisation or ideology.”

However, the result of the 2016 EU referendum affected her deeply and since then she has worked on the issue of UK nationals’ rights in various different ways. Sue has lobbied UK and EU influencers and made great efforts to inform the UK Gov‐ ernment’s work on citizens’ rights, including appearing in front of the Select Committee for Exiting the EU. THE Spanish Postal Service has managed to win two top awards at the World Post & Par‐ cel Awards 2021, specifically in the category of Corporate Social Responsibility for its initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ and in the Postal e‐commerce for its platform Correos Market.

The World Post & Parcel Awards are considered as the Oscars of the postal world and

Correos Awards logistics sector and recognise ex‐ cellence, leadership and the most outstanding proposals made by postal and logistics companies during the previous year. The winners met at a virtu‐ al gala held on Tuesday, June 8, due to pandemic restrictions.

The initiative ‘Help as much as we can’ encompasses all the ini‐ tiatives promoted by Correos during the toughest period of the Covid‐19 pandemic.

Demonstrating its vocation of public service, Correos put itself at the service of society, beyond the development of their usual activity, to get everything neces‐ sary to citizens, the most vulner‐ able groups and professionals who were performing essential tasks at the most critical mo‐ ments.

In the jury’s opinion, “Correos has taken corporate social re‐ sponsibility to another level by encouraging community volun‐ teering among its workers.”

The mobilisation of all em‐ ployees, and especially 3,292 vol‐ unteers, from the very beginning of the pandemic, created a soli‐ darity network and during the 10 weeks of confinement, the vol‐ unteer staff of Correos partici‐ pated in about 500 solidarity ini‐ tiatives, giving logistical and human support to health work‐ ers, the elderly, vulnerable fami‐ lies, schoolchildren and all those groups that needed it.”

Government Wants Electricity Brought Down THE government has said it will request the National Commis‐ sion of Markets and Competition ( CNMC ) to change the so‐ called ‘off‐peak hour’of the price of electricity.

The Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, is committed to ad‐ vancing the off‐peak hour at night of the current electricity rate by hourly sections to 10pm from Monday to Friday, instead of starting at midnight as is the case with the new rate tariff struc‐ ture that came into effect recently.

Belarra pointed out that ‘United, we can request this change,’ which is proposed by Facua, the consumer rights association, and sent to the National Commission of Markets and Competi‐ tion (CNMC) to evaluate its viability.

Spanish Consumer Association OCU and Facua have criticised the new electricity tariffs, which require consumers to use the early morning hours in order to take advantage of the cheapest rate.

Many people would be sur‐ prised to know that in Spain one in three children is at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

Sadly, according to experts, Spain is facing a crisis in child poverty with nearly 2.5 million youngsters being affected.

What is even worse though is that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made these fig‐ ures worse, and it is expected that in 2021 these figures will increase dramatically.

According to studies poor nutrition in young children can prevent them from performing their best at school. Poor nutri‐ tion in the early years of life can bring about irreversible ef‐ fects on growth and even on intellectual development.

According to the Catalan Ombudsman, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has seen attendance in school canteens reduced.

So far this academic year a staggering 2,000 children have benefited from the scheme throughout 250 schools in Spain.

Lottery Thief Arrested by Guardia A LOTTERY ticket thief has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Valencia after buying a house with his winnings from the stolen ticket.

In December 2020, the man had snatched a bag which not on‐ ly contained cash, but also con‐ tained a Lottery ticket for the Christmas special draw. A few days after he had stolen the bag the lottery ticket was awarded a second prize.

Primark Signs Sustainable Textiles Plan THE popular retailer has become a founding signatory of Textiles 2030, the UK Sustainable Textile Action Plan launched by WRAP. Over the next decade, this initiative aims to accelerate the fashion and textiles industry’s move towards circularity and significantly re‐ duce the environmental impact of clothing and home fabrics through practical interventions along the textiles chain.

“By signing up to Textiles 2030, Primark is not only committing to taking significant action in relation to its own operations, including by encouraging its customers to use and dispose of clothing and textile products in new, more sustainable ways, but also collaborating with

other signatories through cross‐industry discus‐ sions to accelerate progress towards a circular economy for textiles and reverse the growing carbon impact of textile products,” the compa‐ ny said.

Alongside other signatories, Primark will set targets for reducing whole life emissions, mea‐ sure the impact of its product portfolio, and act on priorities, reporting progress to WRAP an‐ nually. This includes reducing the aggregate greenhouse gas footprint of new products by 50 per cent, sufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement on cli‐ mate change and achieving Net Zero by 2050 at the latest.

The Benemérita began investi‐ gating after the victim filed a com‐ plaint on December 19. The wom‐ an had been at a Novelda restaurant and was eating a meal when her handbag was stolen from her. The bag contained €950 in cash along with a lottery ticket, which a few days later won a stag‐ gering €125,000.

While the victim had only ini‐ tially reported the theft of the handbag, she soon decided to ex‐ tend the complaint on December 22, after she realised that her stolen lottery ticket had won a staggering prize.

The investigation focused on a 52‐year‐old man, in the Valencian town of Alzira where the the man was found to have a long history of theft. Officers were able to dis‐ cover that he was living in a house which they believed he had pur‐ chased with his winnings from the stolen lottery ticket.

The man was arrested on May 31. He has now been released with charges after being taken be‐ fore the Court of Instance and In‐ struction number 3 of Alzira and is being investigated for an alleged serious offence of theft.

Hartlepool Monkey

REPORTS that have appeared in the UK press concerning perceived problems with the Hartlepool Monkey have been dismissed.

The story developed when it was announced that the Hartlepool Council was considering adding an explanatory plaque to the monkey statue as it may offend some visitors by having possible racist connections.

In fact, the story goes that during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked off the coast of an old fishing village on the north-east coast of England and the only survivor was a monkey that managed

to get to shore.

Those living in Hartlepool had never seen a monkey or a Frenchman and as they couldn’t understand what it was saying, they assumed it was a French spy and hanged it.

There is no real documentation to prove this, but it has been a local story since then and even the local football team has adopted H’angus the Monkey as its mascot.

Now, Councillor Shane Moore, leader of the Council has advised, that despite what some Council employees may have said, “no action needs to be nor will be taken.”

He then turned to his Facebook page and wrote “On a day when we should be celebrating Hartlepool being awarded the full £25 million in Towns Deal money, we are instead talking about how a statue of a monkey needs a sign to prove it isn’t racist.

“In the morning I’ll be reminding Council officers that there was a decision taken last year by Elected Members that said no action needs to be nor will be taken in relation to our existing town street names and statues “I’m all for us explaining our history, culture and folklore to people but ultimately not everything has to come down to race.”

Gordon Brown Won’t Give Up GORDON BROWN is still pushing for the UK to join the EU and said that he will not give up, stressing that this is his personal view and ac‐ cepts that it is unlikely in the short term.

Although the former prime minster was a BROWN: A personal view. strong remain support‐ er before the referendum in 2016, this is the first time he has explicitly called for the UK to return to the EU. “I want to rejoin the European Union,” Brown said. “I’ll not give up. I didn’t support joining the euro because I didn’t think it would work for Britain, it wasn’t because I objected to a sin‐ gle currency.

“I’m not some mad integrationist that in all situations will say, integrate, integrate, integrate. But I do think our future is still European, and I do think that myself. But I recognise that’s not what’s going to happen in the very short term, and I also recognise that we’ve also got to find a better way of express‐ ing global Britain, to persuade people of the need for interna‐ tional cooperation.

“I’m only saying it as a personal view. I still regret leaving the European Union, and I still see a long‐term future as part of Eu‐ rope. And that’s all I need to say. That’s my contribution to the debate. I’m not there to decide Labour’s policy at the next election,” he added.

Vaccine record

THE Ministry of Health reported on Thursday June 10, after updating its re‐ port on vaccination activity in Spain, that 25.1 per cent of the population is already fully vaccinated against Covid‐19. This figure shows that 11,893,951 citizens are already fully immunised.

According to the report, a total of 31,628,321 vaccines have been admin‐ istered, 624,261 alone since June 9, which represents a new record of doses injected in one day. In addition, 43.5 per cent of the population has at least one dose, which represents a total of 20,628,061 people.

According to these latest health data, the number of doses delivered in Spain amounts to 34,715,980, of which 31,628,321 have already been ad‐ ministered, which implies that 91.1 per cent of the total doses received have been administered.

Horse Races scheduled

THE Sanlúcar de Barrameda Horse Racing is one of the most important sporting and social events of the summer calendar, and this week, the Sanlúcar Town Hall in Cadiz and the Royal Horse Racing Society have both

agreed to allow the prestigious horse race to take place once again in August, although the fi‐ nal permission will depend on a report from the Ministry of Health regarding the pandemic situation at the time.

Queen Sofía Cleans Up AS part of SEO BirdLife’s Libera project, ‘QUEEN Mum’ HRH Sofía has rolled up her sleeves and joined in with a clean‐up day in a nature reserve.

The day was part of a nationwide clean‐up initiative which was organised in conjunction with the major recycling firm Ecoembes.

On Saturday volunteers from all over Spain were encouraged to give a few hours of their time as part of the initiative. Volun‐ teers were encouraged to spend a couple of hours clearing up a single one square metre of rubbish, in a natural area.

Queen Sofía is no stranger to these activities and regularly takes part in clean‐up days. Queen Sofia, along with many of the regular volunteers are able to manage more than a single square metre.

Previously she headed to Malaga to join in a mass clean‐up in September. This weekend Queen Sophia helped out at the Soto de las Juntas nature reserve in Madrid.

Queen Sofía is 82 years old and is a patron of SEO BirdLife. Her age does not slow her down though and she joins in with as many volunteer projects as she possibly can.

This famous annual event where horses race on the beach‐ es of Sanlúcar de Barrameda at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River ‐ the old Betis ‐ are the old‐ est in the national Turf and have been going since 1845, with the only breaks being during wars, and last year ‐ which would have been the 175th celebration ‐ be‐ cause of the pandemic.

In a meeting on Friday June 11, in the Consistory, chaired by the mayor, Víctor Mora, in the presence of Javier Porrúa, with the Tourism minister, and Rafael Hidalgo, the president from the Racing Society, along with repre‐ sentatives of the security forces, the decision was made to allow the races to take place, but not the traditional festival that ac‐ companies it.

Another cyber attack THE Ministry of Labour and Social Economy in Madrid was hit by a cyber‐attack last week.

The Ministry tweeted at 11.27am on June 9, “The Ministry of Labour and Social Economy has been affected by a computer at‐ tack. The technical managers of the Ministry and the National Cryptological Centre are working together to determine the origin and restore normality as soon as possible.”

In March 2020, the Ministry was hit by a cyber‐attack which se‐ riously impacted the Spanish State Employment Service (SEPE).

SEPE was forced to suspend its communications systems across hundreds of offices and postpone thousands of appointments.

Its website was also inaccessible for about two weeks and the ransomware attack delayed thousands of ERTE applications, cer‐ tificates and applications for other benefits just as Spain’s strict Covid‐19 lockdown took hold.

Guardia Civil Save Baby

IN a fantastic save, officers from the Guardia Civil have been able to save a 16-month-old baby from drowning in a removable pool in Sevilla.

The accident took place on June 6 and the Guardia Civil were alerted by the coordination centre to the fact that a youngster had possibly drowned. They rushed to the scene of the incident and located the child’s father who was performing CPR. The Guardia Civil officers took charge of the baby and continued to perform CPR manoeuvres. Luckily the child started to breathe slightly.

Medical services also set out to help and as soon as they arrived on the scene they took charge. They quickly rushed the baby to Sevilla Children’s Hospital.

The child’s relatives have expressed their thanks to the Guardia Civil for their excellent work.

P James, aged 50 from Buxton, had left home whilst she was required to be self‐ isolating and has now been made to pay over double the initial fine as she decided to drive her mother‐in‐law all the way to Norfolk.

Ms James had only been fined £1,000 to start with but she refused to pay and even told police that she would not pay it.

Due to her lack of pay‐ ment her case finally made it before a Derby magistrate, as she had failed to pay or indicate a plea.

The case was dealt with quickly and behind closed doors using the Single Jus‐ tice Procedure, which is usu‐ ally reserved for TV licence fines and driving matters.

The hearing at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court took place on March 18, but details have only just been released. At the hear‐ ing Magistrate Paul Dicker‐ son found Miss James guilty and she has had to pay over £2,000.

NATO Summit in Spain 2022 JENS STOLTENBERG, the Nor‐ wegian Secretary‐General of NATO, appeared with President Pedro Sánchez, at a press con‐ ference in Madrid on Monday June 14, where he announced the official confirmation that the next NATO Summit, in 2022, will be held in Madrid, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the Atlantic Alliance.

Mariano Rajoy, head of the previous Spanish Executive had also nominated Spain to host a summit, but the electoral cycles prevented it from happening.

Mr Stoltenberg said that in his

opinion, this decision reaffirms the Spanish commitment to NA‐ TO and it will be a great oppor‐ tunity to show that “Spain is an ally of extreme value,” while an‐ nouncing that during the 2022 summit, “many important deci‐ sions will be made, such as agreeing on a new NATO Strate‐ gic Concept,” which should cov‐ er the Alliance’s master guides until 2030.

Demonstrators against proposed pardons DEMONSTRATIONS took place last week‐ end in Madrid at the Plaza de Colon against proposed pardons for 12 Catalan separatists who were convicted after a failed 2017 inde‐ pendence bid.

The protests, organised by the Partido Pop‐ ular (PP), Ciudadanos (Cs) and Vox, were at‐ tended by approximately 25,000 people.

Hertz Emerges Bankruptcy AS a result of its restructuring efforts, Hertz will emerge from Chapter 11 with a sub‐ stantially stronger balance sheet and greater financial flexibility than it had prior to the onset of the Covid‐19 pan‐ demic, which forced Hertz to file for Chapter 11 relief in May 2020.

Hertz’s reorganisation plan will eliminate over €4 billion of debt, including all of Hertz Eu‐ rope’s corporate debt, and will provide more than €1.8 billion of global liquidity to the reor‐ ganised company.

Hertz also will emerge with a new €2.3 billion exit credit facility consisting of at least €1.07 billion of term loans and a revolving loan facility; and approximately €5.74 billion of asset‐backed vehicle financing facility, each on favourable terms.

The Plan provides for the payment in cash in full to all creditors and for existing shareholders to receive more than €820 million of value.

SUMMER MONTHS: Police reinforcements will increase security for citizens in tourist areas.

RAFAEL PÉREZ, the Secretary of State for Security of the Ministry of the Interior has activated Opera‐ tion Summer 2021, a plan that will reinforce the numbers of National Police and Guardia Civil in the nine autonomous communities of Spain that re‐ ceive the greatest influx of visitors: Andalucia, As‐ turias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, and Murcia.

Mr Pérez announced that Operation Summer 2021 will run from July 1 until August 31, 2021, ex‐ cept in the case of the Balearic Islands, where the plan will last until September 30, 2021.

During this period, the National Police will be re‐ inforced with an extra 2,222 officers, while the Guardia Civil reinforcement will be another 1,599 troops.

Aimed at reducing the risks associated with common crime, and to increase citizen security in these areas of high tourist interest, Operation Sum‐

mer 2021 allows increased surveillance and pre‐ ventive control in urban and interurban communi‐ cation routes, stations, ports, airports, hotels, beaches, and campsites, as well as on the occasion of any event that involves a large concentration of people.

One of the priority objectives of Operation Sum‐ mer 2021 is to reinforce prevention against certain criminal offences against property, such as theft in‐ side homes, as well as offering extreme prevention against online scams, one of the crimes that pro‐ duce the most complaints during the holiday months as a result of the increase of the use of the internet to reserve accommodation and travel packages during the summer months.

Operation Summer in Spain aims to provide pro‐ tection and security in general to all activities relat‐ ed to tourism, as well as to all national and foreign citizens who come or move through the national territory to enjoy their summer holiday period.

Unexpected Virus Replacing Covid AN unexpected virus is replacing Covid in Spain among children, and paediatricians have issued a warning.

According to the latest report issued by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, children up to four years of age are the ones being hit by the most respiratory infections. In fact, according to the report there are a staggering 179.6 cases per 100,000, and this number is growing.

Emergency rooms, paediatric wards and ICUs are said to be full of children who are suffering from RSV bronchiolitis, something that would only normally be expected in December.

As winter ended paediatricians breathed a sigh of relief as it appeared that with preventive measures the ongoing coronavirus pandemic was slowing down. This also seemed to limit the number of other common infections suffered by children.

David Andino, an emergency paediatrician at Madrid’s Niño Jesús Hospital took to Twitter to issue a warning and commented that: “Outside the hospital a suffocating summer heat. Inside the hospital the emergency, paedi-

€1 million eye spy

vAN operation named ‘The Telephone Operator’, by Organised Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA) of the Sevilla Guardia Civil, supported by the Coordination Agency against Drug Trafficking (OCON Sur) and the Regional Centre for Analysis and Intelligence against Drug Trafficking (Crain) have arrested 15 people, finding six high-end vehicles and €1 million in cash.

The Espia2 store located on Calle Recaredo is one of the 21 stores that the Guardia Civil carried out searches on during the morning of Wednesday, June 9, in many places and homes in the provinces of Sevilla, Malaga, Cadiz and Madrid.

Barcelo Opts For Renewable Energy BARCELO HOTEL GROUP and Endesa have extended their collaboration agreement to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity to all the chain’s hotels in Spain. In 2020, the electricity company supplied energy with a guarantee of renewable origin to the 18 establishments of the Occidental Hotels brand of Barcelo Hotel Group and this year the agreement extends to the electricity consumption contract of the 66 hotels of the hotel chain in Spain.

Approximately 107 GWh of annual consumption at Barcelo Hotel Group facilities in Spain, that is equivalent to the consumption of more than 30,600 homes, will be covered with 100 per cent renewable origin guarantee certificates issued by the National Commission of Markets and Competition.

Each year the challenge changes and in 2021 they wel‐ come in the ‘Pelayo Vida 66 North Challenge.’ The challenge has been named in reference to the 66th Parallel North, the fa‐ mous Arctic Circle. The stunning challenge is expected to take be‐ tween 15 and 20 days.

Pub is not off limits

AFTER a judge’s ruling in the UK, a man is now in line for compensation after his former com‐ pany gave him the sack when he was spotted down the pub for a drink while being off sick.

Colin Kane, aged 66, has a serious lung condition which is a result of him being a smoker. He had been a driver for Debmat Surfacing in Newcastle since 2012 and in March 2020 he called in sick.

Later that day though he was spotted by a colleague out and about drinking alcohol and smoking at a social club local to his work‐ place. Colin soon received a call from his bosses but he claimed that ‘he had been in bed all day with his chest.’

This was the beginning of the end and he was soon called into a meeting with his man‐ ager who commented that: “Surely if you had been unfit for work and on antibiotics, you shouldn’t be in the pub.”

Colin admitted that he had nipped to the pub, but believed that he had done nothing wrong as he had not been there for very long. Disciplinary action was started in July 2020, and the driver was sacked for being dishonest and breaching the company’s rules, however, Judge Andrea Pitt found that Colin had been unfairly dismissed as the rules of the company did not explicitly state that workers, when they are off sick, cannot socialise.

She commented on the matter and said: “There is nothing in the disciplinary proce‐

She also found that the company made an error in their investigation as they had incor‐ rectly recorded the day on which Colin had phoned in.

She went on to comment that: “There is no rule [Debmat] can point to, which says that an employee cannot socialise in whatever way they deem appropriate whilst absent from work through illness.”

In order to decide the sum of compensa‐ tion that Colin will receive, another hearing will take place.

Spanish Family Rescued In Dubai POLICE in Dubai have rescued a Spanish family after their yacht broke down at sea near a rock breaker off Jumeirah coast. The yacht is said to have broken down due to a technical issue, however, the police’s maritime rescue patrols in Dubai quickly responded to stop them from colliding into a rock breaker in strong currents and high winds.

The Director of Ports Police Station, Colonel Dr Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, said the Commandand-Control Centre received the family’s distress call when their yacht broke down. “The Station, which has nine marine points in Dubai, immediately responded to the call and handled the situation with extreme finesse and professionalism,” he confirmed.

He said the quick response of the rescue teams helped to save their lives as high winds and strong currents would have caused the vessel to crash into the breaker. Six family members were aboard the yacht, including children.

THE latest edition of the QS World University Ranking for 2022, puts the University of Sevilla in the top 42 per cent worldwide, improving more than six points on last year’s position, and showing a climb of 30 positions on the previous edition, to stand in the bracket of numbers 551-560 of the best universities in the world.

With respect to academic reputation, University of Sevilla shows it continues to climb positions up to 237, improving 22 positions.

Anna and Olivia went missing with their father, Tomas Gimeno, on April 27 after he phoned their mother, Beatriz Zimmermann, to tell her she would never see her daughters again.

IT has been announced that Endesa electricity fraud inspectors will track you down if you try to fiddle your electricity supply.

Juan de Dios Cerrato is a Cordovan man who is about to retire. He started working for the Spanish electricity supply company Endesa at the age of 19, becoming their youngest inspector, and he has devoted his entire 39 years of working life, to detecting electricity fraud.

He says there has always been fraud, which he has been detecting since 1985, originally in the old sheet metal meters, where cheats made a tiny hole from which they made the disk that measured consumption stop, and now in remote-managed digital electricity meters.

During his 39 years, he has seen all kinds of tricks, and Juan always warns that if you are tempted to fiddle your electricity meter to pay less, “Sooner or later you are always detected,” especially now that Endesa uses artificial intelligence to prevent such things from happening.

With the new electricity regulations that came into force on June 1, the idea of lowering the electricity bill with illegal tricks can seduce many, although few actually dare, and the Internet is full of ‘how-to videos’ and detailed instructions so that anyone with minimal

RYANAIR has welcomed the EU General Court’s annulment of the European Commission’s approval of State aid by Germany to Condor. In April 2020, the German government granted a €550 million loan to Condor, which had already benefited from a €380 million rescue loan from Germany in 2019 following the bankruptcy of its parent company, Thomas Cook.

UK to donate vaccines

THE UK will donate 100 million surplus coronavirus vaccine dos‐ es to the world within the next year, including five million begin‐ ning in the coming weeks, the Prime Minister announced on Thursday June 10.

THERE have been rum‐ blings of discontent from Europe concerning clever accounting by mainly US companies such as Ama‐ zon and Google.

France, Spain and the UK either set or intended to in‐ troduce special tax laws which saw a decision by the US to retaliate with the imposition of huge tariff in‐ creases on certain goods.

Now at a meeting in the UK, G7 Finance Ministers agreed an in‐principle deal

to tax international com‐ panies on profits relating to in country sales.

Currently a company can earn huge amounts of money in one country but pay very little tax there because they could set up their headquarters in an‐ other country and channel profits into there and pay lower rates of tax.

Harvesting plastic soup CREATED 18 months ago, Gravity Wave is a Spanish company dedicated to the col‐ lection of plastic from the seabed and transforming it in‐ to useful objects.

The brother and sister team have teamed up with Enaleia, a foundation that works with traditional fishermen from the Mediterranean Sea who rather than throwing back plastic caught in their nets, sends it to Gravity Wave for transformation.

They started small and used the reformed plastic to make cases for mobile phones, but are now branching out as their contact with more than 100 fishermen means that they have so far received some 70,000 kilos of plastic.

Curbing youth unemployment

LATEST PLANS: Minister Yolanda Díaz made the announcement on June 8.

IN a video speech on Tuesday June 8, Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz announced the latest plans to curb youth unem‐ ployment in Spain.

With unemployment amongst those aged under 25 fast approaching 40 per cent, the largest number of unem‐ ployed in that age group in the European Union, the gov‐ ernment has published an 85 page document pledging €4.9 billion to tackle the problem over the next six years.

According to Díaz, this is the largest amount ever com‐ mitted to reduce youth em‐ ployment but it must be re‐ membered, that when the PSOE took over the govern‐ ment, it made a €2 billion commitment to reduce youth unemployment in 2018.

Rather than bring it down, the opposite was the result although in fairness, they couldn’t have forecast the ef‐ fects of the pandemic which

did see far more job losses than could ever have been predicted.

In her speech, the minister observed “Knowing that we are facing an enormous chal‐ lenge, the strategy moves in relation to the recommenda‐ tions of the European Union,” who confirmed that the con‐ cept has been created follow‐ ing discussions with the 17 autonomous communities as well as unions and employers.

Much of what is planned is dependent upon the creation of new technology businesses and the training of staff to work in them, many of whom will almost by definition be young, but this new industry does need to be funded and to date, Spain has still not re‐ ceived any money from the EU Recovery Programme.

Predictions come true

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT TWO of Leapy’s predictions came to pass this week. When originally columned they were of course met with the predictable accusations of racism from those who exploit the term for anything they don’t agree with!

One forecast, which I made almost a year ago, stated that as soon as the fans were allowed back into the football grounds they would let the players and officials know exactly what they thought of their knee taking, racist provoking homage to a Marxist organisation and criminal thug. Well.

You only have to tune in to see how the truth of that statement has come to pass. In a blatant attempt to instigate the mass suppression of free speech the FA has issued a statement actually directing the fans not to boo the players. They also added that they could issue bans on those who ignore the warning. At their peril I would say!

It’s not totally the fault of the teams of course. Referring to the topic in an interview Gary Neville, the England team manager, righteously spouted

that his players would ‘continue to take the knee against any form of racism in the game.’ This well‐ meaning, but utterly naïve comment from the man in charge, just shows how easily they have all been duped into making what is basically a political statement before the start of every match. These fan demonstrations are not derisory howls from thousands of racists; they are the reaction from a rapidly growing populace realising they are all being taken for mugs!

rocket science! Anyway I was delighted to see that politicians, including Boris Johnson, are now voicing the same concerns and admitting they should have perhaps not have been quite so lax in allowing this situation to materialise. Bit late now.

At the time of writing it appears their erroneous decisions will put the whole nation, with all its accompanying misery and economic woes, back yet another month. Once again minority appeasement and ‘woke’ ideals have resulted in the detriment of the long suffering majority!

In closing, I do find it interesting, but not unexpected, that when something I have forecast in the past comes to fruition there is a deafening silence from the former dissenters! Perhaps the silent majority would let us know their views on these matters. Don’t worry; you won’t be arrested for speaking freely. Not yet anyway!

The website gave me the 952 local Spanish number and I went through the usual press 1 for this, 2 for that, until I finally got a human being.

We went through the usual pleasantries, he told me his name and how he was going to be absolutely delighted to help me. I explained I needed a new battery, he asked where I was located and he then said there were no appointments - ever! I said, can you hear what you are saying, this is madness, can I speak to the store manager please?

I’m then informed that’s not possible as he’s not actually at that branch but in the Philippines. But I phoned my local store. Yes but appointments are done from the Philippines. OK put me through to a supervisor and after about 10 minutes on hold I am greeted

by Helen who has been made aware of my

problem and she is going to help me. Are you in the Philippines too? Nope I’m in another country! Anyway Michael when would you like an appointment? When can I have one?

Helen tells me any time tomorrow. But I thought there were none ever? We booked one for the next day. I asked why I had to go through this song and dance. She couldn’t explain so we left it at that.

Next day the store entrance looked like a scene from the movie Contagion with security guards taking your temperature, a ziggyzaggy entry system, then plastic gloves, hand sanitiser on top of the gloves and this is all before you have spoken to an Apple employee.

Finally they take the ‘phone away and tell me to come back in 90 minutes which I do only to be told it’s not ready for another 30 minutes. When I return it’s ready and they let me enter again with more gloves and more sanitiser. When I get the ‘phone the screen is cracked all over. Oh yes, it must have been cracked when it came in. NO IT WASN’T! The guy disappears for a few minutes then says, OK we will replace it free of charge, like he’s doing me a favour! Of course you will, you broke it! After another two hours, more gloves and sanitiser my ‘phone is ready. So that was five hours of my life and €250 spent on bored purchases in the mall!

LACK OF RESPECT Dear Sir/ Madam, I’d like to ask you, do you know what’s going on regarding respectability of the British Blue Badge in Spain?

It looks like a horrible disrespect of every disabled person, a holder of the Blue Badge on the Spanish soil.

Very recently I came across the Local Police banning cars parked in boxes reserved for the disabled of English origin.

As an argument the police officer stated the Blue Badge is no longer valid here regarding Brexit. No matter the one person is disabled but what it does is no respect to the individual person’s health condition.

This works against the human rights!

Worldwide, disabled people are being fully respected. Nobody objects to it.

So why does the Local Police officer have the right to order the car marked with the sign of health disability, to not park in places dedicated to those people?

I would be grateful if you, via your newspaper would alarm the Spanish world and thus reinforce it via the international human rights institution to intervene.

Hello Leapy, I cannot resist commenting on how ‘things have (understandably) changed’ re attitudes of the present day police.

I was a policewoman in the late 1960s ie during the Teddy-boy era and was stationed at a seaside resort. One particular Bank Holiday weekend the town was invaded by train loads of Teddy-boys and a fight was taking place in a side street. I was instructed not to allow any more ‘onlookers’ to go in that direction.

A gang of youths was causing trouble around some shops. After telling them off he said ‘Follow me to the Police Station’ and in a line without abuse they did so, can you imagine the youth of today doing this?

THE easing of restrictions both in Spain and in the UK is remarkable ‐ and nice ‐ for several reasons. But the most important is: how much the simple pleasures of ev‐ eryday life get lost in the familiarity of dai‐ ly routine.

Only when we are denied them do we re‐ alise what a complicated life we lead. It is this latter element that shocks us most. Of the hundreds of minor, even flippant, activ‐ ities we indulge in, we’re suddenly unable to replace them with anything useful or satisfying. Even working from home fails to make up for missing colleagues, chit‐chat and... just everyday life.

So, when released from these tortuous restrictions, we happily revel in anything that is different. Especially when it involves other people in similar situations. It sud‐ denly seems as if having fun is everywhere and so easy to find. Voices seem louder and more important. Laughter is easier to come by and everyone has stories of how they ‘survived’. Boredom is a long way off, and

At the same time, we learn that the ‘se‐ cret of happiness’ has finally been discov‐ ered. Neuroscientists from University Col‐ lege London used a crowd‐sourced gaming app and MRI scans of people’s brains to de‐

velop a rather long‐winded formula (that I’ll summarise for you here: @£!$%!*£@#).

Translated into plain language, it means that avoiding high expectations is the key to happiness.

But for a non‐neuroscientist friend with a

very long, fascinating life behind him, hap‐ piness depends more on personality. For him, some people are more inclined and able to be happy than others. Resentful and ungrateful types are seldom pleased with the world or their place in it even if they are comfortably off. (Yes, I am looking at you, Dominic Cummins!)

In summary, then, according to the latest research: don’t get your hopes up and you’ll have good times. Or as my granny used to say: “Hope for the best and pre‐ pare for the worst.”

Not so sweet SUGAR is a natural component of food like fruits and vegetables, but eating too much of it comes with consequences. We are now a lot more aware of the risks of too many sweets, but there are still plenty of myths about sugar and what it does to us.

The industry has long denied that it plays any role in chronic disease, but research suggests otherwise. Studies have connected excessive consumption with memory loss, high blood pressure, heart disease, cavities and weight gain. Most people could eat less sugar, less often. The research team which presented the findings at the recent European Congress of Obesity in Vienna concluded that: “chewing gum while walking affects a number of physical and physiological functions in men and women of all ages.”

This is welcome news for the chewing gum industry and not the first time that chewing gum has been associated with health benefits.

Previous studies have found that chewing gum on a regular basis can help to reduce stress and protect your teeth from plaque and decay.

Down here on the islands we’ve al‐ ready had a taste of things to come, with an out of control fire which burnt hectares of land, approaching the Tei‐ de National Park, beautiful at the mo‐ ment with its extraordinary tajinaste flowers, at a horribly fast pace.

It was disastrous. High winds fanned the fire, the air was dry, the firefighters exhausted. Then the wind changed direction, a day later it dropped completely and the fire was under control, then out. And it was still only May, albeit late May! There have been small fires in oth‐ er locations, more easily put out be‐ cause of different weather condi‐ tions, but there’s a big problem waiting to happen and, although there’s always danger of summer fires, this year the situation’s exacer‐

The resultant tall, dry grass rip‐ pling in the breeze everywhere now also makes for stunning land‐ scapes, contrasting with the dark drystone walled terraces, but it’s tinder waiting for a spark, much of

The Canarians have constructed agricultural land by painstakingly ter‐ racing mountain slopes and deep val‐ leys. Although there’s more flat land on the Eastern islands, the Western province has precipes in abundance.

By shopping at an indepen‐ dent store you’re putting food on a local family’s table, and there is no better time than now to give back to your com‐ munity by making a small ges‐ ture and shopping in this way.

Many local stores support local charities, support and sponsor local sports teams and in many cases the small independent stores are actual‐ ly much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous gen‐

So be sure to pre‐order your

meat from a local butcher and get your spuds from a lo‐ cal greengrocer, let us revive that community spirit and get to know our neighbours again.

You could also consider purchasing gift vouchers from local businesses to help them over the coming weeks, thinking outside the box can often lead to some fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an online study course for some‐ one looking to change their career path.

As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may

actually need is important too.

Whilst it’s nice to give a glam‐ ourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping peo‐ ple alleviate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times.

Choosing to spend your money locally will really make a difference in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays lo‐ cal, and it strengthens the lo‐ cal economy in two ways.

First, buying local keeps mon‐ ey circulating within the local economy.

Studies have shown that lo‐ cal businesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as

they create locally owned sup‐ ply chains and invest in their employees.

Data shows that local retail‐ ers return 52 per cent of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to just 14 per cent for national chain re‐ tailers.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits ev‐ eryone who is a part of each transaction. For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restaurant, which in turn pre‐ pares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employ‐ ees and the restaurant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbour‐ hood hardware store. This ex‐ ample illustrates how the re‐ circulation of money in the local economy leads to a stronger financial foundation for our neighbours and com‐ munities.

Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportu‐ nities for people within our community.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more peo‐ ple per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

A fantastic example of how to support your local commu‐ nity is with a Charity Gift cer‐ tificate, why not donate to your loved one’s favourite cause.

Just remember to still fol‐ low the latest government ad‐ vice and any guidance busi‐ nesses have to keep everyone safe in the future.

Attacks of Sleep and Weakness in Dogs NARCOLEPSY and cataplexy are disorders of the nervous system in the dog. Narcolepsy occurs when an animal suffers from exces‐ sive daytime sleepiness, weakness, or brief losses of conscious‐ ness. The episodes are brief and go away by themselves. Cata‐ plexy is characterised by sudden muscle paralysis without loss of consciousness, remains alert, and can follow movement with its eyes throughout the episode.

The episodes of cataplexy also are spontaneous, brief, and re‐ versible. These disorders are relatively common in dogs. The caus‐ es are hereditary in Labrador retrievers, poodles, dachshunds, and Doberman pinschers, possible immune system involvement, nerve disorder or Idiopathic (unknown) and pituitary macrotumor (brain).

For diagnosis the veterinary will perform a physical exam, includ‐ ing a blood chemical profile, a complete blood count, a urinalysis, and an electrolyte panel to rule out any underlying diseases. Brain MRI should be strongly considered in sporadic cases of narcolepsy‐cataplexy because sometimes brain tumours could be the reason.

These attacks can be unpleasant but they are not life‐threaten‐ ing. If the episodes are frequent, there may be medications your veterinarian can prescribe to help control the frequency or duration of the attacks.

Electric Motorcycle With 2 Engines Speedometers and your real speed THE world of electric motorcycles just keeps on expanding, and now, American brand Zaiser Motors, a pioneer in the world of electric mo‐ torcycles, is developing new de‐ signs, new technology, and the possibility of a longer distance trav‐ elled on the battery life, or autono‐ my.

They have developed a new model, the Electrocycle, one that stands out for its imposing appear‐ ance, reminiscent of a Harley‐ Davidson, and there is no doubt that elegance and retro air are two of its most obvious features.

A unique feature of the Electro‐ cycle is that it is built in a modular

way, meaning that its parts can easily be replaced if they suffer wear and tear over time.

Its wheelbase is quite wide and striking, as it contributes to high‐ lighting the long silhouette of the vehicle, but beyond the aesthetics of this novelty, what is most sur‐ prising comes from a technological point of view, and it is that, as Zais‐ er assures, which will be the first electric motorcycle in the world equipped to come fully‐equipped with two motors, with one in‐ stalled on each wheel.

In terms of performance, the Electrocycle can go from 0 to 100 kmh in 3.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 193 kmh, and also worth noting is that this bike will have a removable battery whose capacity is 17.5 kWh, which will provide the possibility of fast charging, but above all, the crowning glory has to be the fact it can do a distance of 500km on one charge, a figure that is currently still very unusual in the electric motorcycle sector.

Zaiser Motors has a launch date planned for introducing the Elec‐ trocycle that is between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, and they have stated that the price will be in the region of €20,500.

EVERY year, thousands of drivers are reported for speeding in Spain, and data from 2020 shows that the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) imposed more than €2.4 million fines for this infraction, which represents 62.7 per cent of the total penalties handed out for traffic offences.

As we all know, the speedome‐ ter is the device that indicates the speed of a vehicle, and without go‐ ing into technical disquisitions, this is how the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) defines it, but, when we talk about the speedometer as installed in a vehi‐ cle, it is a well‐known fact the de‐ vice is not displaying the actual speed the vehicle is travelling at.

In fact, the speedometer always shows a higher speed than the ac‐ tual speed, on all vehicles, without exception, whether it is analogue or digital, for legal reasons.

In the European Union, the reg‐ ulations establish that the indicated speed should never be lower than the real speed with a maximum margin of error on the real speed of 10 per cent, or + 4 kmh, whereas in other countries, such as the Unit‐ ed States and Japan, with a long au‐ tomotive tradition, the rule is

SPEEDOMETER: Your actual speed will be lower. stricter, and a maximum deviation of only 4 per cent is allowed.

Put into practice, this means in a European vehicle travelling at a speed of 60 kmh, the maximum er‐ ror limit indicated by the device is 10 kmh, and if your vehicle shows a speed of 70 kmh, it means that you are travelling between 60 and 70 kmh, but never below 60 kmh.

At a speed of 100 kmh, the max‐ imum error limit is 14 kmh, so even if the speedometer indicates that the car is travelling at 114 kmh, it will be doing so between a hairpin that goes from a minimum of 100 kmh to a maximum of 114 kmh.

Apart from the fact that the leg‐ islation establishes that this is the case, we can verify it ourselves first‐ hand, by using a GPS device to monitor the speed, as it is a much

more precise device, receiving its signal from a satellite which locates the position of your vehicle, and then calculates its distance and di‐ vides this data by the time taken to travel this distance, to produce the velocity shown in the GPS display, and you will see that the speed reg‐ istered by the GPS will be lower than that shown by your vehicles speedometer.

There are other factors that can affect the speedometer reading, such as tyre pressures, because a speedometer calculates the vehi‐ cle's velocity by measuring the rota‐ tion of the wheel and the drive‐ shaft, through a sensor located in the gearbox, therefore, tyres with different wear can produce differ‐ ent calculations of up to 2kph ap‐ parently.

by Mark Slack IN the current climate (if you’ll excuse the pun) SUVs are viewed as environmen‐ tal villains, automotive pol‐ luters of the very worst kind. The truth is that many SUVs are now hybrids with smaller combustion en‐ gines, so the days of every SUV being oversized with a large petrol or diesel ad‐ dicted engine is not the full story.

Kia’s newly launched Sorento models and the self‐charging hybrid Soren‐ to in particular is a good case in point. Its 1.6‐litre petrol engine is bolstered by a 64 kw battery deliver‐ ing 40 mpg economy in a very spacious SUV with proper off‐road capability and a real family holdall.

Hybrids remove any range concerns and the need for an expensive home charger, or dealing with our some‐ what fragmented (I’m being polite!) public charging net‐ work.

Priced from €45,802 (£39,360) the Sorento line‐

If I were being picky about the Sorento then

some of the controls are not especially intuitive and the layout of the dash con‐ trols is a little fussy, but ownership would soon bring familiarity. It is a mi‐ nor point in a car that has a distinct feeling of luxury with its comfortable, quilt‐ ed leather seats, hushed in‐ terior and solidity of build quality.
