Vouchers for bookings VALENCIA Community residents have made 16,168 hotel reservations so far this year through the Generalitat’s Bono Viaje travel voucher scheme.

The Viatgem CV (Let’s travel) programme was introduced last

year to encourage holidays inside the Community’s three provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellon at a time when the hotel industry was hard-hit by the Covid pandemic.

The vouchers are available to

all those registered on a Valencian Community municipal Padron and cover 70 per cent of accommodation costs up to €600. The second phase of the scheme covers the period between January 1 and June 15 this year, with a third starting on September 15 and continuing until December 31.

Roughly 3,000 of this year’s reservations correspond to the first fortnight of June, regional Tourism secretary Francesc Colomer announced.

“This reflects the rhythm of the coming summer season, promising positive figures that herald the revival of the Valencian Community’s tourist sector,” Colomer said.

“The Bono Viaje programme has helped to keep part of our offer open, singling us out as a lively, year-round destination,” the Tourism chief declared.

Benidorm, Calpe, Altea, Finestrat, Javea and Elche were the most popular Alicante Province destinations, while the majority of Castellon bookings were for Peñiscola and Oropesa with Valencia City the most sought-after in Valencia Province.

Drunken teen jailed

A DRUNKEN teen who threatened to shoot and kill easyJet cabin crew on a flight from Alicante has been jailed.

Kieran Harris, aged 19, became aggressive after having refused to wear his face mask on a three-hour flight from Alicante to Manchester last year.

Not only did the drunken

teen threaten to shoot and kill cabin crew on the flight, but he also aggressively asked cabin crew member, Dorota Kazimierczak, to perform a sexual act.

Manchester Magistrates' Court heard how he threatened the cabin crew after he had been drinking vodka. The teen

said: “I’ve killed people, and I will kill you as well.”

When the plane landed he had to be escorted off by police at Manchester airport The teen from Garston in Liverpool has been jailed for 12 weeks and was ordered to pay £250 compensation to Miss Kazimierczak.

Moraira drowning THE first registered drowning of the year was registered in Teulada-Moraira last week. The incident occurred at around 3.45pm when the emergency services were advised that an unconscious man had been seen on Moraira’s Ampolla beach.

The victim was attended by a BLS Basic Life Support unit and SAMU ambulance medics who carried out CPR procedures but were unable to revive the victim, later identified as a 60-year-old German tourist.

Time to switch off

CALPE Town Hall is repeating its national publicity campaign ‘Switch off in Calpe’ on underground and railways stations.

This year’s promotion centres on Madrid, Valencia and Murcia as well as cities in Castilla La Mancha whose residents habitually take their holidays in Calpe.

This 2021 campaign began in May, coinciding with the Fitur tourist trade fair in Madrid which is normally held in February, explained Paco Avargues, Calpe’s Tourism councillor.

Medical staff to be laid off THE Marina Baja Health Area will lose ap‐ proximately 30 per cent of the extra medical staff taken on during the pan‐ demic.

A total of 9,300 health professionals were taken on when the Covid crisis was at its worst, with 3,309 assigned to Ali‐ cante Province. Now that the situation has begun to ease and as their contracts come to an end, the regional govern‐ ment’s Health department announced that not all contracts would be renewed.

Of the 350 who were assigned to the Marina Baja Health area, 104 ‐ practically 30 per cent ‐ will be leaving, announced the Personnel Committee which had be‐ lieved the contracts would be extended by six months.

The cuts will principally affect the Ma‐ rina Baja hospital in Villajoyosa, sources told the Alicante Province media.

The area’s primary health care centres will hardly be affected as most of their temporary staff will be retained to en‐ sure that the rhythm of anti‐Covid vacci‐ nations is not affected.

Nevertheless, the Generalitat Ximo Puig announced shortly afterwards that “the immense majority will be taken on again” throughout the Valencia region to ensure attention in tourist zones and cover staff holidays.

A police operation had been launched to locate and arrest the man ‐ who had been on the run since 2019 ‐ after intelligence reports said he was hiding out somewhere in the province of Alicante, and after investigations, he was found to be living in the popu‐ lar holiday town of Benidorm, so an

operation was set in motion to arrest him.

After his arrest, the fugitive was placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction No1 of the Nation‐ al Court of Madrid, where a judge will be in charge of processing the Euro‐ pean Detention Order.

Asian predators on Montgo THE non‐native deadly Asian predatory wasp, also known as the Asian hornet, has been located on Montgo.

Last Saturday morning, an elderly couple visiting the recreation area on Cabo de San Antonio’s Javea side, said afterwards that they started running as soon as they spotted the nest of the highly dangerous wasps.

They alerted the leisure area’s atten‐ dant who immediately contracted the regional government’s Environment de‐ partment who sent an employee to take photographs and cordon‐off the zone.

The attendant also warned visitors

not to approach the area where the nest was located.

In their native habitat, the Asian wasps are responsible for 90 per cent of all insect stings. Owing to the large amount of venom in its outsized stingers they are capable of causing the death in a person prone to allergies and, in a massive attack, of those who are not but are in precarious health.

They also prey on butterflies, flies, hornets and, above all, native honey‐ bees and are responsible for decimating entire colonies in Cantabria in northern Spain.

Dig deep for the Chaplaincy THE Anglican Chaplaincy on the Costa Blanca is making an appeal for unwanted or broken gold or silver jewellery.

Jewellery placed in the boxes displayed in charity shops, hairdressers and other establish‐ ments during the Dig Deep and Give Us a Ring can then be exchanged for cash that will assist with the cost of maintaining the Chaplaincy.

The Anglican Chaplaincy of the Holy Spirit comprises seven Costa Blanca churches in Gan‐ dia, Denia, Javea, La Fustera, Calpe, Albir and Campello that are completely self‐funding. Like so many charities, they have suffered financially during the pandemic.

Gruelling Puig Campana run FINESTRAT has been preparing for the annual Kilometro Vertical Puig Campana (Puig Campana Vertical Kilometre) run.

“We are very excited because the State of Alarm was announced just as we were present‐ ing last year’s edition of the Kilometro Vertical,” said Finestrat’s Sports councillor David Alarcon.

“It has been a compli‐ cated time owing to the health and safety mea‐ sures with practically no events, so competitors are very enthusiastic about enjoying the Puig Campana trail.”

Daniel Osanz Laborda, World Mountain Trail Running champion, was amongst the 267 people planning to compete in the Kilometro Vertical.

Alarcon explained that Daniel Osanz would not be competing for the Re‐ gional Championship, as he belongs to the Aragon Federation.

“But he does not want to miss the opportunity of tackling Puig Cam‐ pana,” the councillor said.

Double-purpose clear-up THE Bulevar de los Músi‐ cos that ends at Albir’s beach has received a thorough overhaul.

“Trees and shrubs were pruned during the winter,” explained Oscar Perez, the Alfaz councillor responsible for Parks, Gardens and Technical Services.

“Now we are clearing weeds and undergrowth and stepping up mainte‐ nance as always when we start to prepare for the summer season,” he said.

Ensuring that the boulevard is clear is dou‐ bly important as its sunken garden area is al‐ so a streambed that plays an important part as a runoff for rainwater dur‐ ing the periods of torren‐ tial rain that, although more usual in the au‐ tumn, increasingly occur in the summer.

An exciting day LAST week things were a little differ‐ ent at the Preventorio de Gandia children’s home.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear leather jackets and helmets like the convoy of 25 Harley David‐ sons that headed recently to Gandia.

It was an exciting day for the chil‐ dren, but the bikers had set out with more in mind than showing them their fantastic Harleys.

They were there to present the Preventorio with a whopping €5,021 cheque thanks to a fundraising Char‐ ity Day organised by Daniel and Lau‐ ren, the owners of the American Bike Rental and Bar in Moraira.

The Preventorio originally opened in the years following Spain’s Civil War, but although the school at‐

tached to the centre receives an an‐ nual subsidy of €12,000 from the re‐ gional authorities, the residencia has to rely on Church funds and dona‐ tions.

The Charity Day cheque will there‐ fore go a very long way towards helping the Preventorio, especially after this difficult pandemic year.

The children’s home ‐ its full name is Preventorio Infantil de Nuestra Señora del Amparo de Re‐ al de Gandia ‐ is a residence for chil‐ dren aged between three and 13 years of age.

At present 55 children who can‐ not for a variety of reasons stay with their own families, live there from Monday to Friday, also attending the school.

Benidorm Free Parking

PUBLIC PARKING: Will offer one hour free.

THE new initiative by Benidorm Council offering one hour’s free parking, ‘Benidorm + cerca,’ will be imple‐ mented in four privately managed public car parks, with a total of more than 1,100 spaces, and will start on Sunday June 6. The tourism sector in Benidorm has been demanding incentives for weeks to prevent con‐ sumer ‘leakage’.

The car parks taking part in the scheme are l’Aigüera, Tomás Ortuño, Mercado, and Ametlla del Mar, all of them are located in the heart of Benidorm and the last one in Rincón de Loix is very close to the beach.

Between the four of them, as well as the 1,100 park‐ ing spaces, they have added a further 630 private park‐ ing spaces on Avenida de Europa and Ruzafa with which the business sector had already reached an agreement on.

U3A Men’s Dining EIGHTEEN gents assembled at the Punjabi Restaurant in Calpe on Thursday May 27 for lunch with the usual members al‐ though some, who have been the UK for some time, were still sadly missing. There was also a number of new faces who all showed great enthusiasm and obviously enjoyed themselves as they have shown interest in com‐ ing to our next monthly lunches.

We have to thank John for or‐ ganising this very successful after‐ noon. We are all getting back into the swing of things now that we can meet and enjoy each other’s company, excellent food and welcoming ambience. Ian Taylor will be organising our next meet‐ ing which will be on the last Thursday in June. We are hoping that all the usual crowd will be there and hope to see our new members and maybe those re‐ turning from the U.K.

easyJet Issues Statement EASYJET were forced to issue a statement fol‐ lowing claims that the ‘majority’ of its flights are now being cancelled. The statement comes amidst thousands of Brits get their hopes up about flying away on holiday this summer.

With a number of countries now on the green list, meaning travellers won’t have to quarantine when they return home, many are being left con‐ fused and disappointed.

A verified easyJet account Tweeted on May 27, “The majority of our flights are being cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. Flights will continue to be reviewed. We continue to review our sched‐ ule and will make amends where we can in order to reflect the changes in demand and restrictions.”

One customer asked why their upcoming holi‐ day to Malia, Crete, that is booked for June 28 had been cancelled and no flights in the whole of June to most Spanish destinations.” easyJet took to Twitter to respond and to warn customers of extensive cancellations. However, when they were approached, a spokesperson for the firm provided an alternative statement: “We want to fly as many customers on as many flights as possible this summer, however as all airlines have been doing throughout the pandemic, we continue to adjust our flying schedule based on the restrictions put in place by governments to en‐ sure our flying programme best matches de‐ mand.”

Sanchez’s Helicopter Ride PRESIDENT Pedro Sanchez and two senior ministers have been trounced by Spanish media outlets for using a helicopter to travel to a green energy event in Toledo after announcing Spain would end short flights.

Travelling to promote his environmental proposals, including a ban on flights on routes that can be made in two and a half hours by train, Sanchez, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera and the Minister for Industry, Reyes Maroto, decided to arrive in the city by helicopter on Monday May 24.

Salaries disclosure Glasses can Detect Coronavirus in Seconds E M P L OY E R S will have to disclose salaries to potential job candidates before they fix a date for an interview, according to proposals put forward by the European Commission.

W orkers will also have the right to see pay scales broken down by position and gender in an effort to ensure pay transparency and end the practice of women being paid less for the same work.

The proposals will also end the practice of employers asking candidates what their previous salaries were and will empower employees who discover they are victims of pay discrimination to seek compensation.

Cyclist’s challenge DISABLED cyclist Álex Roca and extreme athlete Valentí San‐ juan took on the ‘Start your impossible’ challenge to cycle 700 kilometres in a bid to promote inclusion through sport. Álex who has cerebral palsy, took on the challenge with Valentí, to cycle the 700 kms in the space of only seven days as they travelled from Barcelona to Madrid where they delivered the Olympic torch on May 31 to athletes who will take part in the Tokyo games.

Speaking of the challenge Valentí commented that: “Since we can’t take the torch to Tokyo, at least we took it from the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona to the athletes in Madrid who will compete in the Games.”

The two athletes feel that they made the perfect team together and travelled via tandem helping each other on the way and pushing each other to complete the challenge. Álex spoke of the challenge for his body and commented that: “For me and for my body, it’s a tough thing to do.” Álex has taken on many challenges including the Titan Desert, one of world’s toughest races and he has also com‐ pleted the Barcelona half marathon. He went on to add that: “It was hard when they told me I had herpes in my brain and that I was going to die. And now nothing is im‐ possible.”

IN a stunning feat of tech‐ nology glasses have been created which can detect the potentially deadly coronavirus in only three seconds by taking a photo of a person’s eyes. The stunning invention is being developed thanks to both artificial intelligence and scientists from Spain, America and China.

The glasses work by de‐ tecting symptoms of the disease in the eyes. Coron‐ avirus patients who are both asymptomatic and symptomatic show a very characteristic inflamma‐ tion of the eyes. This led the scientists to create the new glasses.

Technology can help with the detection of the potentially deadly coron‐ a v i r u s a s t h i s t y p e o f i n‐ flammation of the eyes can sometimes be missed by healthcare workers. The artificial intelligence of the glasses though is able to detect it.

‘Votes for life’ for British citizens living in Spain ● British citizens who have moved abroad will be given ‘votes for life’ as the UK Govern‐ ment scraps the arbitrary 15‐ year limit on the voting rights ● New measures announced on Thursday May 27 will also make it easier for overseas elec‐

tors to remain registered to vote for longer. ● Together, these changes will empower more British citi‐ zens living overseas to partici‐ pate in the UK’s democracy.

New measures announced in the Queen’s Speech will make it

easier for British citizens who have moved abroad to partici‐ pate in British democracy.

Decisions made in the UK Par‐ liament on foreign policy, de‐ fence, immigration, pensions and trade deals affect British citi‐ zens who live overseas. It is therefore right that they have a say in UK Parliamentary General Elections.

On May 27 the Government was setting out further detail on plans to scrap the arbitrary rule that prevents British citizens from voting in General Elections if they have lived abroad for more than 15 years.

The changes, which will form part of the Elections Bill, will also include measures to enable overseas electors to stay regis‐ tered to vote for longer, with an absent voting arrangement in place.

Electors will be able to reapply for a postal vote or re‐ fresh their proxy vote at the same time as renewing their voter registration, streamlin‐ ing the process and helping to ensure overseas electors have appropriate voting arrange‐ ments in place ahead of an election.

The Government’s wider Elec‐ tions Bill will also: improve ac‐ cess to voting for electors with disabilities; prevent foreign in‐ terference by hostile actors; tackle electoral fraud by post, proxy, in polling stations or through intimidation and undue influence; and increase trans‐ parency and accountability with‐ in our elections.

Further announcements will be made on its measures ahead of the Bill’s introduction.

Iberian Lynx success THE number of Iberian lynx‐ es in the wild has rebound‐ ed after the native cat near‐ ly became extinct at the start of the century.

There are now 1,111 of them in what is seen as a major conservation success story.

The Environment Ministry said on May 28 that 414 cubs were born last year.

The race to save the lynx began in 2002 when the number of the wild cats na‐ tive to the Iberian Peninsu‐

New ITV (MOT) rules DRIVING your car on Spanish roads without a valid ITV (MOT) from the first of June 2021 could now carry a fine of €500, according to a report from the DGT. Driving without having an ITV or current insurance is con‐ sidered a serious or very seri‐ ous offence, depending on the

circumstances. According to the current law, not having the technical inspection up to date can entail a financial penalty of between €200 or €500, de‐ pending on the case.

This also includes cars parked in the garage or on the street without having carried out the technical inspection.

Hancock PPE Lies ALLEGEDLY Matt Hancock lied about PPE supplies at a coron‐ avirus meeting at No 10 which placed thousands of frontline healthcare workers at risk, according to a No 10 source.

Back in March 2020 Hancock had allegedly told Prime Min‐ ister Boris Johnson that much‐needed PPE supplies were headed for the NHS when in fact they were not. It is alleged that Hancock claimed that a PPE shipment containing masks and gowns coming in from China had been “sorted out and there was no problem,” but two weeks later the consignment had not arrived, as it was flashing on a Cabinet Room screen in red.

The PPE debacle had to be cleared up by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Dominic Cummings is said to have become furious after having discovered that the much‐needed supply of PPE was arriving via boat rather than via plane.

Driving without insurance can attract a fine that varies from €601 to €3,005, depend‐ ing on the uninsured time and if the offence is repeated.

Continuing to drive the vehi‐ cle with very serious defects through a no‐pass, carries a penalty of €500.

In these cases, the vehicle is not authorised to leave the ITV station by its own means, but will have to be transport‐ ed by a ‘grua’ to the garage for repairs and return to the ITV station, within a maximum pe‐ riod of two months, to check if the defects have been correct‐ ed.

Airbus & Unions Extend ERTE Backlash for Postal Service EUROPEAN aircraft manufactur‐ er Airbus and the unions have reached an agreement to extend the temporary employment reg‐ ulation file (ERTE) in its Opera‐ tions division in plants in Getafe (Madrid), Illescas (Toledo) and Puerto Real (Cádiz) until June 30.

AIRBUS: Workers’ contracts are safe for now.

The unions reported the ex‐ tension of the ERTE, which ended on May 31, will now run from June 1 to June 30 , while the con‐ ditions and guarantees will be the same as those that have been ap‐ plied since November.

On November 18, 2020, the company and the unions agreed to a six‐month extension for the suspension of workers’ contracts until May 31 this year.

In this sense, during the time that the file did not last, it was agreed that the workers would receive 70 per cent of the base salary and seniority, without af‐ fecting their extra pay, vacations or variable remuneration.

Vaccinating Farm Workers DOZENS of farmworkers in Spain are awaiting their turn to be vaccinated by a team of nurses against the coron‐ avirus. With Spain being the main provider of fresh fruit and vegetables to the rest of Europe, it is now a race against time to immunise the army of cheap labourers on farms as harvest season looms.

The outbreaks of Covid among farmworkers in the north eastern regions of Aragon and Catalonia last year come as a stark warning and the aim is to prevent a re‐ peat of these outbreaks that fuelled a spike in infections and led to localised lockdowns.

Jordi Janes, the mayor of Alcarras, said: “We had a really rough time last year. Municipalities were locked down, fruit packing stations were closed due to the Covid cases.

“This gives us peace of mind,” he added, as he was standing outside of the vaccination centre which has been set up in the town’s school to vaccinate approxi‐ mately 400 agribusiness workers.

The Spanish postal service believes that the stamps “re‐ flect an unfair and painful re‐ ality that shouldn’t be al‐ lowed.” They aimed to highlight racial inequality with every parcel or letter which was sent with one of these stamps.

The campaign though has caused controversy. Correos aimed to “shine a light on racial inequality and promote diversity, inclusion and equal rights,” but critics have hit back at the campaign.

Antumi Toasije, who leads the government’s Council for the Elimination of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination took to Twitter to express his con‐ cerns. He hopes to stop the sale of the stamps. He tweet‐ ed and commented that: “A campaign that outrages those it claims to defend is always a mistake.”

IN today’s article, we are going to talk in a simple way, about the legacy claim. That is, how can the beneficiary of a legacy, legatee, claim it. Normally, against the heir or the executor of the inheritance.

Definition Through the legacy, the tes‐ tator leaves a right or a specific asset to one or more people.

The legatee is different from the heir.

The legatee is a specific suc‐ cessor, he only receives one or more specific things.

The heir is a universal succes‐ sor. That is, inherits the assets of the deceased in general.

Legal basis Article 858 of the Spanish Civil Code (CC), provides for the possibility of making bequests or legacy.

Handing over request.

As stated in Article 885 of the Civil Code: ‐ The beneficiary of a legacy or legatee, ‐ Cannot occupy the item be‐ queathed by his own authority.

Unless authorised. ‐ Therefore, will have to re‐ quest the delivery and posses‐ sion of it, to the heir or the ex‐ ecutor.

Therefore, normally, the beneficiary of a legacy, must re‐ quest the heir to deliver it.

Lack of delivery or hand over. Legacy claim.

If the heir refuses to deliver the legacy, he can claim for it in court.

In the cases of legacies of money, it must be paid in mon‐ ey. Although in inheritance it is not. And not with other assets or items. Although it is possible and convenient, to reach agree‐

ments, if possible.

In addition, by accepting the inheritance, the heir agrees to fulfil the legacies.

Consequently, the heir would be obliged to deliver it, even affecting his own assets and money. Thus, before ac‐ cepting the inheritance, it is convenient to make sure that it will be possible to fulfil the lega‐ cies.

Conclusion.

Thus, for the above reasons: First, that it is possible for the heir to accept and get the in‐ heritance. Even if the beneficia‐ ry of a legacy of a specific item does not intervene.

Second, that the legatee must normally request the de‐ livery of the item bequeathed.

Third, the heir will some‐ times respond with his own as‐ sets for said handing over of the legacy.

Germany removes regions from risk list THE Spanish Embassy in Madrid announced that as from Sunday May 30, at 00.00hr, Ger‐ man authorities removed the Spanish regions of Cantabria and Castilla‐La Mancha from their list of risk areas, which means that citi‐ zens of these two regions will not have to un‐ dergo mandatory coronavirus quarantine up‐ on entering Germany.

REAL MADRID’S Bernabeu Stadium caught fire on Wednesday, May, 26, in the evening as smoke was spotted billowing out of the iconic ground as it undergoes construction work.

Renfe Connecting more Cities SPANISH train operator Renfe, has started to rebuild its ser‐ vices to different parts of An‐ dalucia, out of its Sevilla base, with new timetables as from May 31.

With the recovery of these latest services, it means that Renfe will have gone back up to between 75 and 80 per cent of its pre‐pandemic timetable, with the new links to Cordoba,

Jihadists Jailed For 2017 Attacks

THREE members of a jihadist cell responsible for attacks in Barcelona in 2017 in which 16 people died and more than 100 were injured were sentenced last week.

Mohamed Houli Chemlal, who is a Spanish citizen, and Driss Oukabir, a Moroccan citizen, received jail terms of 53 and 46 years respectively. Said Ben Iazza, also a Moroccan, will serve eight years for collaborating with a terrorist organisation.

Hoili and Oukabir were found guilty of belonging to a terrorist organisation, manufacturing explosives, attempted terrorist acts and 29 counts of grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutors had sought lighter sentences and were asking for 41 years for Houli and 36 years for Oukabir.

They will however not serve more than 20 years of their terms and their sentences can be appealed.

Dealing with conflicts HOW to deal with common neighbour issues in Spain is a tool everyone should be equipped with. From noises, early morning parties, barking pets, the list is endless when it comes to problems with neighbours in buildings and residential areas throughout Spain. In addition, the coronavirus pandemic has brought new conflicts as a result of restrictions.

Isabel Bajo, President of the College of Property Administrators of Madrid (CAFMadrid) and vice president of the College of Property Administrators of Spain, analysed all the possible problems between neighbours and gave recommendations on how to

deal with some common conflicts.

Neighbours having a party beyond set hours: According to Bajo, mediation in conflicts is the most important thing. There are some schedules which should be respected. Limits should be set by talking to those who break the rules. If this does not come to fruition, then you can complain about the noise levels and ask the police to act. But the first thing is to start with mediation.

What can be done about the noise of pets?

There are municipal rules stipulated for this situation. If a pet is left abandoned on a terrace, it

could be crying all day and causing discomfort. The owners must ensure that this does not happen, both for the inconvenience of neighbours and for the animal’s welfare. In the case of animal cruelty, you can contact the Guardia Civil Seprona department.

What is the current regulation of pools during the pandemic?

The restrictions are a little less harsh than last year, as the capaci-

ty allowed in the pool last year was 50 per cent and this year it is 60 per cent. In the perimeter area of the pool, a social distance of three metres should be implemented and in that space of three square metres is where towels and clothes should be left. The area should be disinfected twice a day. Also, the use of a mask is mandatory when entering and moving around the pool grounds.

Alberto Carreira, speaking about the wedding explained: “I’m not sure what changed between our first attempt at marrying on April 23, and our second attempt on May 26 ‐ nothing did, actually.

“There’s proof in the form of videos and photos in which I agreed to take off my pi‐ rate’s hat and ‘Jack Sparrow’ wig so that I could be easily identified as the person on my official documents, but this was not accepted the first time around.

“So I don’t know what hap‐ pened today.”

Spanish media approached the Galicia regional High Court of Justice which ex‐ plained that as Alberto had ‘agreed to remove his hat and wig’ in order to be identified ‘as established by law’, the wedding could go ahead.

Ageing Population Bank of Spain reported.

BY 2050 there will be two re‐ tirees for every three active workers making ageing one of the most serious demograph‐ ic challenges facing Spain.

Between 2010 and 2060 the dependency ratio, the

number of retirees compared to the number of workers, will grow by 34 per cent.

This means Spain will expe‐ rience the greatest increase in the dependency ratio in Eu‐ rope and by 2050 for every three people of working age, there will be almost two peo‐ ple over 65 years of age, a trend which will have a nega‐ tive economic and social im‐ pact, according to the Bank of Spain.

“We have never experi‐ enced an acceleration in the dependency ratio of this type,” said Oscar Arce, the bank’s Director General of Economy and Statistics on Thursday May 27.

The trend will have will have an effect on consump‐ tion, investment, employ‐ ment, productivity, wages and prices, and also on the management of monetary and fiscal policies, he said at the first ‘Forum on Ageing Age and Life: Repercussions of ageing in the Spanish econ‐ omy.’

Covid contagions A MACRO-STUDY confirms that an asymptomatic person can be as contagious as a hospitalised patient. The largest study of viral load in Covid patients, with more than 25,000 participants, now confirms the decisive role of invisible super spreaders.

From the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Germany, the research shows that people infected with coronavirus reach their peak viral load in the throat between one and three days before the onset of symptoms. Some people become real virus spreaders without suspecting it.

According to the new study, a normal sample taken from the throat contains 2.5 million copies of the virus genome, but nearly 9 per cent of those infected have one billion copies or more.

The work confirms an explosive scenario: more than a third of patients with a very high viral load are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. Given that the average age is 37, they are a highly mobile population.

The results have been published in the Journal Science www.sciencemag.org.

Covid Vaccine Blood Clot Puzzle

GERMAN scientists claim to have found the cause of the blood clots which have been linked to the Oxford/AstraZeneca and the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccines in rare cases. Not only do scientists believe they have found the cause of the blood clots, they also believe that the vaccines can be altered in order to prevent the reactions happening too.

Rolf Marschalek, a professor at Goethe university in Frankfurt believes his research that he has been working on since March could contain all the answers. He has been leading studies into the blood clot puzzle and believes that the problem comes from “the adenovirus vectors that both vaccines use to deliver the genetic instructions for the spike protein of the Sars-Cov-2 virus into the body.”

Both the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for the potentially deadly coronavirus have been affected by the rare blood clotting side effect.

The German scientist has been contacted by Johnson & Johnson, and according to the scientist they are looking for ways to alter the vaccine. He explained that Johnson & Johnson: “is trying to optimise its vaccine now.”

“With the data we have in our hands we can tell the companies how to mutate these sequences, coding for the spike protein in a way that prevents unintended splice reactions.”

New Tax Law Closer A TOUGH new Spanish tax law designed to beat fraudsters has taken a step closer to being rat‐ ified. The Congress of Deputies approved the Draft Law on Pre‐ vention and Fight Against Tax Fraud on Tuesday May 25 and now it moves to the Senate.

The bill includes measures to combat tax fraud linked to new technologies and cryptocurren‐ cies and will allow for the pros‐ ecution of ‘inappropriate be‐ haviour’ by large companies and will target ‘abusive tax planning’.

Added To Green List Soon SPAIN expects to be added to the UK’s Green list on June 7, and Brits are already flooding in, even though Spain is cur‐ rently classed as amber.

Fernando Valdes, Spain’s tourism minister has high‐ lighted that Spain should not be on the amber list, and that he expects the country

to make it onto the green list during the next review.

Many expats are desper‐ ately waiting to see their families, and hope that Spain will soon be added to the green list.

Speaking to the press, Valdes spoke of the coun‐ try’s progress with the vac‐

cination programme.

He explained that: “Right now Spain is doing a great ef‐ fort not only in terms of vac‐ cination, we have at least one third of our whole popu‐ lation with at least one dose... but also, we do have

some holiday destinations which are very loved by British tourists such as the Balearic Islands, Costa Blanca or Malaga, with our notifica‐ tion rates which are pretty low and by the same notifi‐ cation range of the UK.”

SCANDAL hit actor Kevin Spacey plans to return to the big screen playing a policeman investigating a man wrongly accused of being a paedophile.

Spacey, who has been the subject of multiple sexual misconduct allegations, is to play a detective in Franco Nero’s film about a man wrongly suspected of being a child abuser.

The plot involves a blind artist, to be played by director Nero, who can draw people by listening to their voices, who is accused of abusing children. Vanessa Redgrave, who is married to Nero, will play his piano teacher.

Spacey dropped out of public view in 2017 when more than 20 men alleged sexual misconduct by the actor between 1995 and 2013. Spacey denies all accusations of misconduct.

Worry about renewable plants CONSERVATION groups are worried but renewable energy plants will not harm nature and wildlife, minister insists.

The move towards renewable sources of energy is compatible with the protection of biodiver‐ sity and Spain’s natural heritage, the government has insisted.

The statement comes after conservation groups raised con‐ cerns about ad‐hoc and industri‐ al‐sized projects blighting the countryside.

The Vice President and Minis‐ ter for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, confirmed on Thursday May 20 that that there is “a flood of requests for renew‐ able projects very much above what is estimated to be neces‐ sary to meet our goal of reduc‐ ing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.”

The government however is demanding that these projects respect the environment and wildlife and will use strict plan‐ ning laws to decide where they are built but the minister ruled out a moratorium while these laws are being worked out.

SOCIAL media giants, Facebook and Instagram, are giving users the option to hide public ‘likes’ on their posts.

The move though could scupper the influencer industry as likes are a key metric used to measure what impact influencers really have.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, has been testing the new feature since 2019. The company said the move would make the social media platforms “less stressful”.

“What we heard from people and experts was that not seeing like counts was beneficial for some and annoying to others, particularly because people use like counts to get a sense of what’s trending or popular, so we’re giving you the choice,” Facebook said in a blog post.

EIGHT bus drivers from Trans‐ portes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB) who love diving left their vehicles for a

few hours to dive 100 metres out to sea in the bathing area of the Forum, with the aim of cleaning the seabed.

Cryptocurrency Trading Platform BIT2ME, the Spanish cryptocurrency platform, has just launched Bit2Me Trade, the first high-frequency cryptocurrency trading platform developed by a Spanish exchange.

Arribas said that there were few divers for such a massive amount: “We were 12 or 13 divers, and we have not removed even a quarter of what there was. There is still much more.”

During the cleaning, the volunteers found some very curious items: City Hall fences, tyres, and even a mannequin. Of course, the main reason for doing it has been the masks. In fact, Ar‐ ribas assures that there were so many that they have only been able to get a small part.

“Others have had to stay there because we couldn’t cope.”

CHINESE President Xi Jinping had a half hour phone con‐ versation with Spanish Presi‐ dent Pedro Sánchez this week.

After asking Sánchez to convey his cordial greetings to King Felipe VI, he pointed out that China and Spain are important strategic partners and cooperation between the two is important.

Currency outlook: US dollar slumps on abysmal payroll reading, Pound surges amid easing political uncertainty

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.87 to £0.86 EUR/USD: Up from $1.20 to $1.22 An improving economic outlook in the Eurozone has been a key source of support for the euro over the past month.

This comes in response to the continued acceleration of the EU’s vaccine rollout as well as the reopening of more countries within the bloc.

This upside in the euro has also been supported by recent EUR data releases, which have been broadly positive and point to a strong rebound in economic activity in the second quarter. However, confirmation that the bloc suffered a double‐dip reces‐ sion over the winter ensured it wasn’t all plain sailing for the single currency.

Turning to June, we are likely to see the euro maintain its recent uptrend as the Eu‐ rozone’s economic prospects continue to improve.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.14 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Up from $1.38 to $1.41 The past month has seen the pound trend broadly higher, with the most no‐ table upswing in Sterling coming in re‐ sponse to reduced political uncertainty in the UK. This came after the Scottish National Par‐ ty failed to secure an outright majority in May’s election, reducing fears of an imme‐ diate independence referendum.

Also providing some lift to Sterling has been the reopening of more of the UK

economy and positive domestic data re‐ leases, although these gains have been tempered somewhat in the second half of May by UK coronavirus developments.

With the spread of the Indian variant of the coronavirus in the UK threatening to disrupt the government’s roadmap for eas‐ ing restrictions, domestic coronavirus headlines are likely to act as a key catalyst of movement in the pound in the weeks to come.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.72 to £0.70 USD/EUR: Down from €0.82 to €0.81 After fluctuating in late April in response to a dovish Federal Reserve policy state‐ ment and upbeat GDP figures, the US dollar experienced an aggressive selloff at the start of May following a startling miss in the latest US payroll reading.

A sharper‐than‐expected acceleration of domestic inflation in April helped the ‘Greenback’ to claw back some of its losses in the week that followed.

However, this upside in USD proved short lived, amidst expectations the Fed will continue to view the surge in inflation as ‘transitory’, as well as in the face of an increasingly upbeat global outlook, which has sapped safe‐haven demand.

Looking ahead, USD investors will likely be keeping a close eye on May’s payroll fig‐ ures, as another underwhelming reading will likely keep the pressure on the US dol‐ lar and validate the Fed’s current dovish bias.

So bitter and biased

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT an arrogant and highly predictable organisation the BBC actually are. When Dominic Cummings made his now infamous and highly illegal ‘Durham dash,’ during lockdown in March of last year, the media, especially the BBC, made an enormous hue and cry, accusing him of being a blatant liar and baying for his resignation.

In the light of his recent unsubstantiated accusations against the government, the BBC has revelled in his statements, treating them all as though they were gospel truth and truly making a meal out of every ‘fact’ that has spilled from the lips of this obnoxious individual, who is obviously so bitter and biased towards his former employers he would swear they were hatching a plot to put everyone in a onesie and stick a chip in their heads if he thought he could get away with it.

obtained by stealth and the falsifying of bank documents. In their usual ‘damage control’ mode they have symbolically begun to sever the heads of a few initial scapegoats and minions involved. Tony Hall, who was head of the BBC at the time, has resigned from his position on the board of The

National Gallery, a gesture which means just about zilch.

Bashir has stepped down citing ‘health reasons’ and to date that has been the sum total of their retributions.

Will they reach the top? Don’t hold yer breath. I dread to think of the phone calls, text messages and shady

meetings that have taken place among the hierarchy, as they scrambled to cover their backs in their undoubted panic to exonerate themselves from the whole seedy exercise.

Why should the British taxpayer have to shell out for a load of well‐heeled manipulators, who are the hypocritical purveyors of left wing propaganda and Political Correctness which, if they have their way (heaven forbid) will ultimately put the UK under the jurisdiction of the Labour party at the next election?

I suppose it’s a complete coincidence that the new strain of Indian Covid happened to manifest two to three weeks after the return of the thousands of ethnic minorities who were allowed to visit Pakistan and India to celebrate the Ramadan and Eid festivals?

I also understand that a further nightmare that is threatening journalist and newscasters all over the world is yet another new variant which is thought to have originated in Wales and will henceforth be known as the Llanfaipwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob wlllantysiliogogogoch Strain! Just kidding. See ya.

So, what if you just want to spend 90 days in a 180‐day period? Well, nothing has changed, you can buy a property, a car, have a mobile phone contract, life just continues as it did before the UK left the European Union.

However, some people are rightly concerned about the tax, property ex‐ penses and security issues with their Spanish property being left unattended for six months of the year. What is the solution? I am old enough to remem‐ ber timeshare here in Spain, the solu‐ tion is not the timeshare you may have heard of. Rather two or more people

buy a property in Spain and form a mini community with rules. That way your property can be occupied all year round and share costs.

Basically, if all the owners agree then you can enjoy your property as you wish. So, has the infamous timeshare returned? Most certainly not, maybe the best name for it is private co‐owner‐

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’V E been watching and reading stuff about Prince Harry and Prince Charles and it seems to me that Harry has decided that his dad wasn’t a great dad as far as being a good role model.

Harry has been getting some stick for it too but I actually get where he is coming from, after all, Charles’ treatment of Harry’s mum was disgusting. All through their courtship and marriage Charles was having an affair with Camila and was just using Princess Diana to knock out an heir and a spare. Everybody in the Royal Family knew and it looked like it was quite acceptable. So it’s not surprising that when Harry got older there was resentment for his father and ‘The Firm’ for their treatment of his mum, and in his opinion, towards Harry’s wife too.

It reminds me a bit of Bobby Moore. I knew his son Dean pretty well until his death some years ago. Dean was a troubled soul and one day we were talking about how it was being the son of an English legend and hero. Wherever he went

he was introduced as Bobby’s son. He saw statues of his dad and everybody said how much they loved him and what a great man he was. But Dean had a slightly different view because, apart from remembering what a great footballer he was, Dean’s memory was that he was the man that cheated on his mum with another woman and wrecked his home life.

But, of course, no-one ever realised how that messed up Dean’s life and, in the end, actually cost him his life too.

On a different subject I was parking my car the other day and the only space available was hard to get into because the car next to me had parked so badly. Its back end was over the white line which meant that my car had to go over the white line on the other side. The thing is that when I got back the offending car had gone which left mine looking like I had parked badly. I knew it wasn’t my fault and I felt like shouting out ‘It’s not my fault, I was forced to park like this.’

It’s a bit like when you come out of the loo on an aeroplane when someone hasn’t cleaned up properly and you want to say to the next person that it wasn’t your mess! No-one believes you.

EMMA WALLSWORTH THE fast current changes in climate which many of us have personally wit‐ nessed over the last eight years, always seem to creep up on us. I am sadly not as prepared as I should be in the few oc‐ casions we have to collect rain water.

We have managed to improve some of the ways in which we collect rain water and minimise water waste in our home.

Here are a few simple ways that may help you...

1) Add guttering to your home that leads to collection barrels.

2) Use a bowl in the sink when washing fruit and vegetables, water your plants with it afterwards.

CANARIES DEAR reader, here we are, halfway between spring solstice and summer equinox.

The Romans celebrated Floralia, the Celts Beltane and, leaping forward a millennium and over hundreds of oth‐ er May day festivals celebrated throughout history in the northern hemisphere, International Workers’ Day was declared in 1889.

Here on La Gomera, we’d have been leaping over fires in Agulo on St Mark’s Eve had it not been for the pan‐ demic. IN the latest diversity drive, Rugby chiefs have scrapped using the ‘inappropriate’ nickname ‘Saxons’ for England’s second team which will revert to the name ‘England A’ after 15 years of being branded as the England Saxons. This in the wake of the RFU’s decision to distance itself from ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’ the slave spiritual adopted as a terrace anthem by England rugby supporters.

What is wrong with these people? Are we going to force Sussex (South Saxons) and Essex (East Saxons) to change the names of their counties because the name doesn’t describe the people who live there or discriminates against residents who can’t trace their ances‐ try to the Saxons? The RFU does realise that England derives from the land of the Angles, right?

Yes, rugby may need to be more inclusive but a mindless name change won’t help. This is

Saxons are part of our history so why should we be ashamed of their cultural impact, and how does the name ‘Saxon’ stop non‐ white people from playing rugby? ‘England’, because presumably that name will trigger some with its associations with Empire and being white British?

90-DAY RULE OVER the past weeks there have been numerous articles and letters regarding the 90-day rule in Spain. A great number of people, including myself, purchased a property in this country to facilitate a holiday home, to be enjoyed as and when I could, always sticking to the 180-day rule with regard to non-residential occupancy. Like many others, during my time in Spain I contributed to the economy paying all dues and purchasing a car. All bills like water, electricity, telephone, internet, suma, private health insurance being settled by standing order.

The purpose of this letter is to suggest a possible practical solution to the difficulty in the issue of a document in the form of a NON-RESIDENT HOME OWNERSHIP CERTIFICATE. To obtain such a document the house owner would produce, either at a police station or local town hall the following documents: 1. Original or copy of the Escritura for the property.

2. Passport.

3. Recent utility bills.

4. Copy of an up-to-date Padron.

5. Any other relevant documentation as required.

On payment of an administration fee, say €50, the certificate would be issued and renewable say every three years. This would entitle the owner(s), either sole or joint, access to their property as and when required.

This suggestion is of course open to any modification particularly with regard to the use of the property by immediate family members, but I am sure there is an answer out there for a workable solution.

This idea could perhaps be considered by the EU as a whole as there are properties owned in all countries by non residents.

and after finally finding out how to get on the ‘list’ for vaccination (I’m an expat with private health insurance), and subsequently registered at the health centre in Marbella (Las Albarizas), I have been waiting seven weeks so far.

I've been at Las Albarizas three times since to try and get on the list, but every time told that I will be called in due time! It’s absurd that the Junta here appears to have placed this age group on ‘hold’ due to the lack of AstraZeneca, whereas in other parts of Spain, the most vulnerable are being given alternatives which have since become available! I suspect that Richard and I are not alone and thus it would be much appreciated if this issue could be highlighted again in you excellent newspaper.

A Covid windfall tax Dear Sirs As the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be under control, it is time to consider a windfall tax on all those who have profited from the virus or seen their, already vast, wealth increase. This should not be seen as an attack on the wealthy, but a contribution towards the underpaid health workers who have spent the year saving lives, at a huge risk to their own, and the millions who have seen their livelihoods suffer through job losses or forced business closures.

It cannot be equitable in a democratic society that sports stars, video, internet, distribution, energy or financial company bosses should make fortunes at the expense of the rest of the population.

A one-off windfall tax on excessive gains would go someway to reduce growing inequality and help governments finance the cost of looking after those who have been penalised due to the pandemic.

In fairness to them, they were facing a problem that caught the entire world by surprise and creating a sensible and workable solution was without doubt something that would tax any group of politicians.

When compared to Spain for example, the British started off incredibly badly and seemed to completely flounder and have no real idea of how to cope with the pandemic.

Spain on the other hand appeared to react very quickly and declared a State of Alarm and lockdown earlier than the UK, but the fact is that with a

population of 46.75 million (according to statista.com) and 80,000 deaths attributed to coronavirus, 0.16 per cent of the population in Spain died.

In percentage terms, the actual number of fatalities is close to the UK which with its population of almost 68 million, there were 128,000 deaths, equating to 0.19 per cent of the population.

It seems that the so-called clowns in the UK didn’t do as badly as one might have thought and as far as vaccinations are concerned, they have certainly been very successful in obtaining vaccine and inoculating their population.

THE EUROWEEKLY NEWS is urg‐ ing its readers to support local businesses in the community by going local now that the lock‐ down has ended and for your all your shopping this year, instead of feeding online giants and su‐ perstores.

We challenge you to rediscov‐ er your local high streets, mar‐ kets, butchers, greengrocers and all of the wonderfully quirky in‐ dependent businesses in your area.

Now that the Covid‐19 pan‐ demic appears to be under con‐ trol, it is a good idea to try and support many local businesses by ordering online and making use of any click and collect ser‐ vices they can operate, especially if you are unable to get out due to health reasons or any other restrictions.

The joy of shopping local means that independent busi‐ nesses can help support the local community.

Although it may be a euro or two cheaper elsewhere or on‐ line, consider where your money is actually going.

By shopping at an indepen‐ dent store you’re putting food on a local family’s table, and there is no better time than now to give back to your community by making a small gesture and shopping in this way.

Many local stores support lo‐ cal charities, support and spon‐ sor local sports teams and in many cases the small indepen‐ dent stores are actually much more than just a small high street shop, they’re a family’s legacy, often passed down through numerous generations and support not just the current

fantastic ideas. Why not buy a meal for two, an hour’s tattoo time at a local studio, a hair cut at a local salon or an online study course for someone look‐ ing to change their career path.

As people are struggling with finances thinking about what friends and family may actually need is important too.

Whilst it’s nice to give a glam‐ ourous gift perhaps pre‐paying a family member’s phone bill for the month would actually be a better gift. Helping people allevi‐ ate stress and worry, give the gift of peace of mind through these difficult times.

Choosing to spend your mon‐ ey locally will really make a differ‐ ence in the recovery of the local economy. When we buy local, our money stays local, and it strengthens the local economy in

two ways. First, buying local keeps money circulating within the local economy.

Studies have shown that local businesses recirculate a greater share of every euro as they cre‐ ate locally owned supply chains and invest in their employees.

Data shows that local retailers return 52 per cent of their rev‐ enue back into the local econo‐ my, compared to just 14 per cent

for national chain retailers.

Money circulating through the local economy benefits everyone who is a part of each transaction.

For example, let’s look at a local farmer growing produce.

First, they sell to a local restau‐ rant, which in turn prepares the fresh produce and sells it to local customers. The farmer pays its local employees and the restau‐ rant uses revenue from sales to buy supplies from a neighbour‐ hood hardware store. This exam‐ ple illustrates how the recircula‐ tion of money in the local economy leads to a stronger fi‐ nancial foundation for our neigh‐ bours and communities.

Buying local also fuels new employment and job opportuni‐ ties for people within our com‐ munity.

Studies show, locally owned businesses employ more people per unit of sales and retain more employees over time.

A fantastic example of how to support your local community is with a Charity Gift certificate, why not donate to your loved one’s favourite cause.

Just remember to still follow the latest government advice and any guidance businesses have to keep everyone safe in the future.

DAVID WORBOYS PUCCINI’S operas are among the high‐ est form of art and I personally find them sublime, along with some of the works of Donizetti, Bellini and Gior‐ dano. However, the towering com‐ posers of opera are considered to be Verdi (Italian) and Wagner (German).

Much as I love Puccini, I would not ar‐ gue with the global assessment by those closely involved. However, just a few days ago, a slightly intoxicated Lon‐ doner assured me that “Puccini will al‐ ways live in the shadow of Verdi.”

But how can such wonderful music be in the shadow of anything? Are Haydn and Mozart ‘in the shadow’ of Beethoven? Are Murillo and El Greco ‘in the shadow’ of Velazquez? Surely not.

In many walks of life and over several centuries, the scrutiny of experts and common opinion have given us clear ‘front‐runners’. But those who really live in their shadows are usually those whose obscurity is the result of a far lower level of talent.

Among athletes, Muhammed Ali was widely declared the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT). But how can a boxer, however

But the race is so close between Nadal, Federer and Djokovic that none of them will be shad‐ owed. We should not forget that, bar‐ ring his injuries, Murray would most

probably be right up there with them.

However, many great inventors and scientists etc have been pushed into the shadows ‐ in so far that they are not as well‐known as others in their field, al‐ though they were there first.

Darwin seems to have succeeded in pushing Alfred Russel Wallace into the shadows through alleged plagiarism.

Darwin is much more celebrated than Wallace, although it was probably the latter that developed the original theory of evolution. George Stephenson intro‐

So, when I next hear an aria from La Boheme or Madama But‐ terfly, Tosca or Turandot, it will not en‐ ter my head that Verdi is held in higher esteem by a majority of aficionados.

Seat Reports losses

CUPRA: The new sports model is popular.

SEAT has reported a loss of €36 million (£31.2 million) in the first three months of 2021, which is 25 per cent less than the corresponding peri‐ od of the previous year, of course, the result of the pan‐ demic, and the global short‐ age of semiconductors which led to lower production lev‐ els, and consequently, sales.

The Volkswagen group it‐ self seems to be one of the companies handling the pan‐ demic best, reporting an eightfold increase in profits in the first quarter, with a net profit of €3,244m (£2,820m), while turnover jumped up 13

per cent to €62,376m (£54,235m), mainly thanks to the Chinese market, growing its production by 432.3 per cent, with 4,812m units.

With its focus on the Euro‐ pean market, Seat has strug‐ gled due to the poor market performances in Spain and the United Kingdom, with sales dropping by 3.7 per cent, to 125,000 cars, al‐ though ‐ thanks in the main to the success of the new Cupra sports model, whose sales in‐ creased by 127.6 per cent ‐ the turnover increased by 11.5 per cent, reaching €2,851m (£2,479m).

A source at the company said, “The goal in 2021 is to achieve a positive operating result thanks to the best product range in its history,” which will depend on the suc‐ cess and speed of the vaccine rollout, and the return to nor‐ mal of the supply in semicon‐ ductors.

Sales are expected to in‐ crease once the new electric Seat León and Tarraco hy‐ brids, plus the Cupra León and Formentor hybrids, hit the market, with the Cupra Born also scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2021.

by Mark Slack THE French have a reputation for some rather advanced mechanical design as well as a certain aesthetic flair. Renault have an additional automo‐ tive string to their bow in F1 racing, and especially with the new Team Alpine where hopes for success are high.

Success is very evident in the latest Megane Sport Tour‐ er. Despite the rebranding of estates as tourers and shoot‐ ing‐brakes they are still de‐ signed with practicality in mind. Although not the largest estate the Megane still has a useful load area over a hatchback.

Prices for the range start from €27,304 (£23,500) but in the case of my RS‐Line Plug‐in hybrid it’s a somewhat hefty €38,336 (£32,995). That’s a near €6,971 (£6,000) premi‐ um over the nearest pure petrol stablemate, but the Plug‐in hybrid develops an ex‐ tra 20hp and carries addition‐ al features including that plug‐in capability.

There’s a pretty decent all‐ electric range of around 30 miles which is enough for a modest daily commute. As ever a home charger is essen‐ tial to get the best from the car’s electric power.

The interior of the Megane has an air of quality, much im‐ proved of late, and there’s a decent size touchscreen built into the fascia, no ‘bolt‐on iPad’ look here. It really is a very nice place to be accom‐ modated. Unlike so many cars the digitalisation is at a sensible level ‐ rivals please take note ‐ and there’s a choice of driving modes to make the most of the hybrid

options.

On the road there’s plenty of power for quick getaways and overtakes and it’s mostly

carried out in a serene and audibly calm atmosphere.

There’s a slightly sporty edge but this is no traffic light

grand prix car or point‐to‐ point racer, but it acquits it‐ self well soaking up bumps and undulations on our roads

along the way.

All‐in‐all this is a very ac‐ complished car, lots of stan‐ dard equipment and the look and feel of a quality build.

The hybrid element adds to the potential practicality but at its price there’s some stiff competition from more pre‐ mium badges. That said I would still very happily have kept hold of this one.
