WEEK DAY DINING

Soller train SUSPENDED since August 2020 due to damage to the track, it appears likely that the Soller train service will start running again in June although the timetable may have to be flexible depending about anticipated demand and any health restrictions in place.

Green light VISITING Ibiza on April 28, British Ambassador, Hugh Elliott, explained that whilst the UK was in the process of deciding which countries would be treated as green light destinations for British holidaymakers, he could not confirm that the Balearics would be treated differently to mainland Spain.

Vaccine figures BALEARIC Minister of Health, Patricia Gómez, has announced that the Islands expect to receive 79,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine next week of which half will be from AstraZeneca. She expects that with supplies from other manufacturers, the weekly May average will hit 100,000.

TAKING ADVANTAGE: Terrace diners hope that the weather stays good for a while. THERE was a somewhat muted welcome to the deci‐ sion that restaurants could reopen their terraces from 8pm to 10.30pm on Mon‐ days to Thursdays, but not at weekends at least until at least May 10. Quite a few diners took advantage of this latest con‐ cession, but the organisa‐ tions representing the hos‐ pitality sector pointed out that some 80 per cent of bars and restaurants do not have terraces and are there‐ fore still as badly off as they were in the lockdown.

It is reported that the leaders of the two main as‐ sociations the Confedera‐ tion of Balearic Business As‐ sociations (CAEB) and the Pimem federation of small to medium‐sized businesses have been told by the Balearic Government that the matter of opening inte‐ riors will be discussed. Clearly the Government wants to ensure that the spread of infection is kept as low as possible because of the possible influx of tourists, but this could re‐ bound on the island if the

tourists have nowhere to go in the evenings. One suggestion is that in‐ teriors could be opened with guests accepted on an advance reservation basis. Sadly, a number of restau‐ rants who do have terraces have decided that it is not financially viable to close and then reopen several hours later as they can’t af‐ ford to keep their staff hanging around for just an‐ other two and half hours of service and not be able to benefit from weekend busi‐ ness.

BOAT SHOW BACK

AFTER going virtual last year, all indications are that plans for the Palma International Boat Show to go back to the Moll Vell from June 3 to 6 are on course. Realistically it will be scaled down because of the prob‐ lems of travel and financial restraints of exhibitors, but it will be the first face‐to‐face fair in the sector after the pandemic and will be the event that will inaugurate the nautical sea‐ son. Organisers of the show, the Institute of Business Innova‐ tion of the Balearic Islands (IDI) working with the Balearic Government have entered into an agreement with the Asso‐ ciation of Nautical Companies of the Balearic Islands (AENIB) to offer support to the more than 100 companies that are part of it and that represent the traditional business fabric of the local nautical sector. Speaking about the reason for entering into this agree‐ ment, Vice President of the IDI, Juan Pedro Yllanes explained that “it must be borne in mind that the AENIB has always had a great representation among the exhibitors of the fair, some of whom are its founders. “This past year, due to the crisis caused by Covid‐19, com‐ panies have suffered a drop in revenue that does not facili‐ tate participation in the fair. That’s why we want to support them so that they are present at the Palma International Boat Show, which will be a great opportunity to recover sales and get out of these difficult months.” Thanks to the agreement, the companies associated with the AENIB will receive a discount on the price for their partic‐ ipation in the fair and in return, they will promote and give visibility to the event through promotion and dissemination of information to national and international contacts. The AENIB is made up of many different nautical business‐ es on the Islands and brings together very diverse activities among its members, such as construction and maintenance of boats, sale of boats, charter, nautical training or repair and maintenance. Founded in 1986, it is the main business association in the Balearic nautical sector and is part of the ANEN (National As‐ sociation of Nautical Companies), which represents almost all of the nautical industrial and recreational businesses in Spain.
