ANIMAL CENTRE: No abandoned pets have been put down and adoption figures are up. THE Malaga Municipal Ani‐ mal Health Centre has reached its target of p u t t i n g d o w n n o a b a n‐ doned pets. According to Spanish newspaper Sur, the Munici‐ pal Animal Health Centre’s figures showed it had reached its commitment to p u t t i n g d o w n n o a b a n‐ doned pets. Only two animals had to put down during the first three months of the year, both for illness reasons. Councillor for Environ‐ mental Sustainability Gem‐ ma del Corral said the fig‐ ures were the result of working with charities and improved public awareness. She said: “If we consoli‐ date these data in the com‐
ing quarters, Malaga will be a city of zero sacrifice; the next step will be to achieve zero abandon‐ ment, which is the key to not having to sacrifice any animal.” The Malaga animal cen‐ tre had previously eu‐ thanised large numbers of abandoned pets, with 1,982 animals slaughtered in 2011. Since then, the number of abandoned pets in Malaga has declined every year, resulting in a 93 per cent drop in the number of dogs being put down, from 1,093 in 2011 to 78 in 2020. The centre says it now only euthanises animals for health reasons.
Councillor del Corral said the reduction in deaths came following help from animal charities, including the Society for the Protec‐ tion of Animals, Dogs of M a l a g a , A M A N a n d C i r i‐ ana. Adoption figures had al‐ so continued to improve, with adoption of dogs ac‐ counting for 16 per cent of income in 2011, to 27 per cent last year. The new state and An‐ dalucian regulations on an‐ imal welfare and protec‐ tion which are currently being approved include many of the measures and policies that Malaga has implemented for years, in‐ cluding canine DNA for identifying animals.
AN Axarquia town closed a public school and has sus‐ pended its weekly market amid a rise in Covid cases. Nuestra Señora de Monsalud public school in Alfarnate closed this week due to an increase in Covid infections in the municipality and the public has been asked to only leave the house when ‘strictly necessary.’ The school was closed on Monday and Tuesday, April 19 and 20, and the town’s Friday market has been sus‐ pended. Mayor Juan Jesús Gallardo took to social media to re‐ port that the town council is in contact with Axarquia Health and Education Department, as well as the manage‐ ment at Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquia and the local health centre. He stressed that “all the measures must be supervised by the rest of the public administrations.” According to data from the Andalucian Institute of Statistics and Cartography, Alfarnate, with a population of 1,065 people, has a cumulative incidence rate at 14 days of 2,910.8. “The data is not encouraging and the total number of people affected between contagions and direct contacts can be between 200 and 250 people,” said the mayor. “The only way to stop the chain of infections is to con‐ fine ourselves and leave the house only when strictly nec‐ essary,” he added while wishing a speedy recovery “to all those infected along with encouragement and strength.”
TAKE CARE: All measures must be supervised.
