HUERCAL‐OVERA is taking a tough line with dog‐owners who fail to clean up after their pets. A Local Police campaign is currently reminding owners that while having a dog is great, allowing it leave a ‘calling card’ will earn them a fine. Officers are keeping an eagle eye on streets and roads, plazas and Parks and public gardens, revealed Domingo Fernandez, Huercal‐Overa’s mayor. “This campaign is necessary because some people are ignoring municipal by‐laws that cover the ownership and protection of animals,” Fernandez said. “Not cleaning up after dogs creates un‐ hygienic trouble‐ spots that spoil the image of the town and at the same time create unpleasant situations for the rest of us.” The campaign will be carried out in all Huercal‐Overa areas and applies to anybody who fails to comply with the by‐law’s Ar‐ ticle 54.1 and allows a dog to foul a public area “without taking opportune measures.” The town hall warned that the Local Police will be on the look‐ out throughout the month of April for recalcitrant owners. Municipal sources stressed that as always, the fault lies not with the dogs but with those who own them. And failure to comply will not come cheap, with fines that range from €60.10 to €300.51.
