AMAZON IN ALICANTE AMAZON, the world’s largest online retail giant, will open a new logistics centre in Alicante City near Mercalicante. It announced its intention last Friday, March 5 and the e-commerce company is clearly wasting no time. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the 8,000 square metre facility on the city’s Llano del Espartal industrial estate, is expected to be fully operational by the summer. Amazon will create more than 60 jobs at its Alicante plant, both full-time and part-time, as well as opening up opportunities for some 300 drivers to work on deliveries inside the city and the

surrounding area. “We are delighted to continue investing in the Valencian Community with this new logistics station in Alicante, where we will provide efficient delivery to customers,” Director of Amazon Logistics in Spain, Pao-
lo Patrone, said. “We shall also contribute to the creation of hundreds of jobs through our transport partners,” he added. Only last month, the online giant announced the development of a new logistics centre in the In-
telhorce estate in Malaga, which the promoter, Montepino Logistica claimed would greatly reduce delivery and collection times in urban areas. Meanwhile, the mayor of Alicante City, Luis Barcala, has welcomed the news of the creation
of so many jobs in the province. Amazon had chosen to locate its new logistics centre in a prime industrial location, Barcala said, pointing out that the company was the first to take advantage of the city’s ‘priority processing’ system. This, he explained, has been introduced to smooth the way for companies that intended to move to Alicante City and also create much-needed jobs. City hall has already directed Amazon to the Local Development Agency for the selection of staff, Barcala said. He has also asked local small and medium firms (SMEs) based in the city to support the new endeavour by selling their products on Amazon
wherever possible. The new Alicante installation will be Amazon’s second logistics centre in this region, joining the Paterna centre in Valencia Province. More than 1,000 Valencian Community SMEs already sell their products on Amazon, making it the company’s third-largest regional Spanish seller.
