MOTRIL’S €6M HOSPITAL
WORK on the new multi‐million euro hospital will begin at the end of the year, with a further €180,000 allocat‐ ed in light of the pandemic to create an extra 15 beds. The first stone will be laid at the site between November and December, 14 years after the old Santa Ana de Motril regional hospital building was demol‐ ished, and construction is expected to take 30 months. At t h e b e g i n n i n g o f M a y 2 0 2 0 , t h e project, which has gone out to tender, was presented by teams of experts in hospital engineering for review and the specifications were drawn up. The new hospital will be 14 metres high and will have three floors and the initial €4.5 million that was initially es‐ timated has now risen to €6,674,336. Though unions have expressed con‐ cern about the budget allocation, the Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, said the budget reserve for 100 per cent of the construction work has been approved “in order for the new building to become a reality as soon as possible.”
Police jabs MOTRIL Local Police have received the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine. The vaccination of the town’s firefighters will begin on Monday, March 15, divided into groups - as with the police - to prevent possible side effects leaving the service stretched. The local officers will have to wait around 21 days to receive the second jab for full immunisation. At the beginning of the year, the council and unions demanded that the vaccination of police and firefighters be prioritised after around 20 per cent tested positive, putting immense pressure on both emergency servcies. “The first vaccination shift of the firefighters will start next Monday, and in this way, one of the claims that the consistory has made to Health will have been fulfilled,” said councillor for Citizen Security, Mara Escámez.
NEW HOSPITAL: Will be built on the site of the old regional hospital building and is expected to take 30 months.
Tribute to women
THE efforts of women in the fight against Covid were honoured by Rincon de la Victoria Council on International Women’s Day (March 8) with a manifesto in recognition of their contribution during the pandemic. Deputy mayor and councillor for S ocial W elfare, Elena Aguilar, highlighted the fact that the pandemic has confined many women to their homes, adding: “We can not allow ourselves to go back on the relevance of the gender perspective as social reconstruction or teleworking makes us disappear from the public arena and decision-making against Covid-19. “This manifesto recognises the great contributions of women and the exemplary female leadership.
