SLOWING DOWN
ALTHOUGH it is dangerous to make assumptions based on daily figures, it would ap pear that there is a slow down in the rate of new Covid19 infections in Mal lorca. Figures released by the Balearic ministry of health yesterday (Wednesday Janu ary 20) indicate the numbers are falling in some 27 areas, remaining unchanged in 15 and increasing by relatively small numbers in 11. It is too early to take this as concrete news but Javier Arranz, speaking on behalf of the Autonomous Committee of Infectious Diseases of the Balearic Islands on Tuesday confirmed that there was a noticeable slowdown in new infections overall which he welcomed. The same is not true for some of the other islands in the Balearics and Ibiza seems to be the hot spot for new in fections with two towns in

Iñaki Urdangarin may leave THE husband of the Infanta Cristina, Iñaki Urdangarin was sen tenced to five years and 10 months imprisonment for his part in the Nóos case which saw him embezzle €6 million through his Mallorca base. He was most recently incarcerated in the Brieva prison in Avila and was allowed out for eight hours each week in order to under take voluntary work with the disabled, but when he applied for more relaxed conditions in 2020, this was rejected His lawyers have now received a positive response from a court in Castilla y Leon to an appeal (which was not contested by the prose cutor’s office) which would now allow him to work outside of the prison, although he would need to return each evening to sleep. In addition, he would be given permission to leave the prison each weekend, subject to a number of restrictions. It is anticipated that if he continues to behave in an exemplary manner that he will be considered for parole in 2022.
measures introduced by the Balearic Government in Mal lorca during January, whilst
not being good for business es appear to be having some positive results as far as
health care is concerned. There is no doubt that the health facilities in Mallorca
are near to being over whelmed due to the number of patients being seen, but equally importantly doctors and nurses can only cope with so much stress and work so many hours before they suffer mentally and physically to the detriment of all. At least however, 98 per cent of all frontline health workers have now received their inoculation which will give them some protection against the pandemic. Whilst the Government both on the islands and in Madrid have been the focus of complaint and negative at tention, it seems more than likely that there will be fur ther restrictions on a national basis, but if the longterm re sult of such restrictions cou pled with increased numbers of vaccinations sees the end of the latest peak, then the difficult decisions being taken should be seen as being justi fied.
