TREMENDOUS APPLAUSE

AS the end of 2020 loomed, Ann and Brad Swift, organisers of the annual New Year’s Day swim in Mojacar knew that due to Covid­19 this fun and ever grow­ ing event would not be able to take place. However, there was a ‘bubble’ of folk whose determination did not wane and stop them from greeting 2021 with their desire to raise much needed funds to help PAWS­PATAS Animal Charity. Es­ pecially after a year which halted all fundraising events creating ex­ treme financial stress. The animal shelter requires €9,500 per month in order to cover basic working require­ ments and care for the kittens, cats, puppies and dogs continual­ ly abandoned and often requiring medical treatment. On Friday January 1, 2021 at high noon; although the sun was shining, the Alboran Sea offered a chilly welcome to the 13 intre­ pid swimmers who braved the el­ ements and plunged into the wa­ ter. Enduring 15 minutes of bobbing in the Mediterranean and offering a roaring rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Eighty­five­year­old local writer and thespian Jim Dale­ Grey insisted on taking part as he is particularly concerned that Shoestring Productions has been unable to support PAWS­PATAS during 2020. Jim has written a new play which is waiting in the wings and the drama group are

Also returning from previous years were long­term PAWS­ PATAS volunteers from the shel­ ter, Kerry Clarke, Christine Logan and John Sutcliffe. Refreshments were served by The Swifts and Bunny and Trevor Willis supplied hot mulled wine. Last year saw 80 brave people join hands and run into the sea with a further 200 cheering them on from the beach. This is the sixth annual swim and in previ­ ous years hundreds of euros have also been raised in memory of Elaine McBride, Little Leo and MACS. However, these 13 Trojans raised the bar and with sponsor­ ship in Spain, the UK plus dona­ tions at the event; at the time of

These are precious euros in test­ ing times and our gratitude is great”... says Committee Mem­ ber Chrissie Cremore. Chrissie continues to explain how a ‘little’ can go a ‘loooooong’ way and would also like to ex­ tend “extra special thanks to those who consistently donate and those who help when they can. The £1/€1 scheme has gen­ erated thousands over the past five years, providing an extremely ‘comfy cushion’ for the shelter and the animals.” PAWS­PATAS wishes you all a much happier, positive and pros­ perous 2021.
