GIFT OF TALKING

‘THIS Christmas the best gift is talking’ is the slogan of a cam paign launched by Malaga City Council to tackle loneliness among the elderly over the fes tive period. The local authority is reinforc ing its dedicated Loneliness Tele phone Line 900 923 092, along with an awareness campaign and moving video on social networks. The telephone support line was launched in 2018 as part of the province’s Plan Against Loneliness of the Elderly. According to a Madeca Founda tion study, over 65yearolds ac counted for 17.24 per cent of the total population of the province of Malaga in 2019. Councillor for Citizenship and Depopulation Care, Natacha Ri vas, revealed that already this year, 56,000 telephone calls have

been made to the loneliness helpline. More than 36,000 of these were made during State of Alarm. “The calls are from elderly peo ple who feel lonely and particular ly in the months of confinement when the feeling of loneliness was accentuated. “For this reason, this line was reinforced with a team of 100 people with the collaboration of volunteers belonging to various social entities across the province,” said Rivas, adding: “Most of the callers ask for emo tional support or someone to talk to, and even during confinement this service served to offer help to meet their daily needs. “The majority of callers are women aged between 85 and 95 and are usually widowed or have physical or mental difficulties.”

Dani is just one of the children suffering from EB.

THERE are now 304 families who belong to the Debra But terfly Children’s Charity which is dedicated to helping those afflicted by the rare disease Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) and is desperate to continue to raise money to investigate causes and treatment. The charity suggested that although the majority of us have had our lives turned up side down by the global pan demic can at least assume that it is a temporary prob lem for most, but in the case of children with EB they suf fer every day of their lives. A new campaign emphasis es the need to make EB more visible so that people can re ally understand the reality of living with this condition and what life is really like for the 304 families that belong to the organisation. “We want to reach out and

bring people together virtual ly to show the reality of what it is like to live with open wounds and painful daily treatments. There is no break from this for families over Christmas. The wounds will still be there

and the suffering continues,” commented director of the charity, Evanina Morcillo Makow. To find out how you can help tackle EB visit https://www.pieldemari posa.es.
