XMAS TOY APPEAL

THE Civil Protection Associa­ tion in Rincon de la Victoria has launched a campaign to collect new toys for children from vulnerable families in the town to ensure ‘no child goes without’ a toy on Three Kings Day. Councillor Josefa Carnero said: “The current health situ­ ation has dragged many fami­ lies into a difficult economic situation. For this reason we do not want the pandemic to leave any child without a gift.” Organisers are asking for toys that “are as educational as possible, avoiding electric items and those specific to boys or girls.” Children who receive a toy will correspond to the fami­ lies being assisted by the mu­ nicipality’s social services. The collection campaign will run until December 31, ready for delivery before Three Kings Day on January 6.

River cleanup in Velez

MORE than 50 children and adults cleaned Velez River at the weekend as part of a ‘protest campaign’ to force ‘in­ stitutions’ to carry out regular maintenance at the protected area. The cleanup operation was organsed by Axarquia’s GENA­ Ecologistas en Accion in partner­ ship with the Society of Friends of Culture (SAC) of Velez­Malaga and the council’s department of Environment. GENA said in a tweet: “We are very grateful for the great participation (more than 50 peo­ ple) in today’s cleanup of the Velez River delta! We hope that the institutions with compe­ tence will take note and con­ tribute to the maintenance of this protected area with periodic cleanings.”

Containers, agricultural plas­ tics, wet wipes, textiles, wood, up to five car wheels, one from a lorry and several mattresses were among ‘items and pollu­ tants’ collected during the exer­ cise and Covid protocol fol­ lowed.

Fair and Festivities Area has organised a week of fun activ­ ities for all the family which kicks off on Saturday, Novem­

ber 28 with the turning on of the Christmas lights. These include drive­in ses­ sions, concerts and children’s and family shows. The Christmas light will be turned on at 6.15pm in Plaza Al­Ándalus following a Christ­ mas zambombá which will be performed by Casa Pestiño. Councillor for Culture, Fairs and Festivities, Clara Perles, said: “The current situation we live in is complicated for everyone, but we do not want to stop inspiring fami­ lies and have organised Christmas activities, always guaranteeing compliance with the established health and safety measures. “This year will be different and special. We have pre­ pared many activities thinking especially of children who have shown a great capacity to adapt to the changing rules that are being imposed on us in this difficult year.”
