THE mayors of Orihuela and Torrevieja are pushing for a railway link between their municipalities.

Emilio Bascuñana and Ed­ uardo Dolon recently present­ ed a study by Alicante Univer­ sity’s Civil Engineering department for the future connection between Orihuela, Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa.

The project would answer one of the Vega Baja’s great­ est needs by uniting the coast and the interior with an alter­ native to the CV­95 road, Bas­ cuña declared.

Plans will now be submitted to the Generalitat as well as the central government’s Min­ istry of Public Works.

to the project because it would open up so many travel options for the area, Bas­ cuñana pointed out.

He revealed that the two town halls are considering public­private finance and asked neighbouring municipal­

ities to support the project so that it could be carried out as soon as possible.

“This is really good news for the Vega Baja,” Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolon said.

“It is a totally viable project and is what the southern Va­ lencian Community de­ serves.”

Dolon went on to say that now was the right time for the regional government to in­ clude the rail scheme in its Plan VegaRenhave Vega Baja regeneration scheme.

The two mayors hope to meet the Generalitat presi­ dent and request a Budget al­ location to draw up prelimi­ nary draft, Dolon said.

Commemorating Armistice Day Lorca WhatsApp

DESPITE various levels of lock­ down, the Royal British Legion was able to commemorate Armistice Day locally in both Ori­ huela Costa and Torrevieja.

In Pilar de la Horadada, the Orihuela Costa and District event was held outdoors, beside the RBL Garden of Remembrance,

with the authorities having previ­ ously decided that social distanc­ ing inside the tiny Capilla de las Mil Palmeras was not possible.

As such it was very much a scaled down service with just a dozen or so participants led by the mayor of Pilar de la Horada­ da, José María Pérez Sánchez,

who read the Exhortation and Kohima in Spanish.

Assistant chaplain Stephen Treseder opened the event “To the memory of the fallen and the future of the living” with a short prayer after which, following the last post, silence and reveille sounded by Alwyn Pollendine, wreaths were laid while Piper John Wilson played a lament.

Just along the road in Torrevie­ ja, the local council authorised a much grander affair which was held at the Parroquia de la In­ maculada Concepción church in Ramon Galud.

The event was attended by Mayor Eduardo Dolón, the Chair­ man of Spain District North, Don Cubbon, and approximately 100 dignitaries and guests.

The service, led by Father Richard Seabrook, got underway as the standards were marched into the church to the pipes.

The hymn music was provided by a clarinet quartet from the Royal British Legion Band.

Following the service many of the congregation moved to the cenotaph in La Siesta where wreathes and poppy crosses were laid in memory of the fallen.

THERE is positive news in Lorca as the council has announced a WhatsApp number is now available for residents to report municipality cleaning incidents.

In an initiative announced by the deputy mayor and council­ lor for Public Companies, Francisco Morales, on Friday, Novem­ ber 13, Lorca City Council has partnered with the municipal company LIMUSA to make an instant messaging service avail­ able to locals.

“The new communication channel will make it easier for res­ idents to inform, via WhatsApp, about [cleaning] incidents de­ tected or pending services to provide a quick response. The new number is 646 073 578 and it is already available to serve Lorca residents,” said Francisco Morales.

The purpose of the new launch is to strengthen Lorca and help it run more efficiently with Morales confirming that “this new line of communication between the municipal company and the residents [means] another useful tool [has been incor­ porated] to [help] respond to possible incidents as quickly as possible.”

The number will be available from 8am to 8pm in the af­ ternoon, Monday to Friday, to attend to the demands or in­ cidents in relation to the services of the municipal cleaning company.

Birds and bees ROJALES now belongs to a net­ work of municipalities working together to help pollinators adapt to climate change.

Antonio Perez, Rojales mayor and Jose Manuel Catarineu, pres­ ident of the ANSE naturalist asso­ ciation, recently signed the agree­ ment that encourages town halls in Alicante, Murcia and Almeria to implement the central govern­ ment’s Pollinators Conservation Strategy.

Municipalities undertake to adopt conservation measures that will draw pollinators ­ princi­ pally bees but also wasps, flies, beetles, birds, bats and small mammals ­ to their green spaces and municipal allotments.

ANSE, which supplies seeds and seedlings as well as wild bee nest boxes, also monitors and as­ sess participating municipalities.

Murcia Gym Equipment DESPITE restrictions, lockdowns and fear of Covid contamination, Murcia is set to incorporate 1,000 new pieces of outdoor gym equipment.

The council has already begun the introduction of the ‘bio­healthy’ equipment among more than 3,000 green areas of the municipality. According

to mayor José Guillén, “We are designing these areas [so] that [they] can be enjoyed by both chil­ dren and adults, covering all ages and all profiles.

These areas become open­air gyms, available to all residents and which improve their health and quality of life.”

Climbing mishap AN Alicante Province Consortium of Fire Brigades helicopter rescued two climbers from a rock wall in Orihuela’s Rincon de Bonanza after a safety lock failed and one fell on top of the other while abseiling. The helicopter had to evacuate them one by one, transferring them to Orihuela Hospital each time.

Red tape TOWN HALL opposition party Sueña Torrevieja claimed that the firm contracted to provide the municipality’s tow-away service was routinely having to wait almost 10 months for payment and had not been able to pay staff’s October salaries. The Traffic department blamed the delay on a bureaucratic hitch.

The initiative, launched by the councillor for Health, José Galiano, through the Communi­ ty Prevention of Addictive Be­ haviours Unit of Orihuela (UPC­ CA), consists of different posters

Body Found Near Cemetery THE lifeless corpse of a young woman has been found next to a cemetery in Murcia and accord­ ing to police sources, she has been dead for some time.

The tragic and horrific discov­ ery was made on Sunday, Novem­ ber 15, next to the cemetery of the Murcian district of La Ñora, in a Rambla area near the district of Javalí Viejo.

It is unknown how she got there, or when she died, but po­ lice recovered some objects next to her body including a backpack of a girl who disappeared last summer from the town of Alcan­ tarilla.

Exchange your Driving Licence WITH the countdown to Brexit creeping in, one of the key actions for UK Nationals living in Spain is to exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one, but recently a lack of appointments has made this difficult.

It is a two­step process. The first step is to make an application to the DGT before December 30. You can do this via their online portal if you have a digi­ tal certificate/CLAVE or by calling 060.

Irrespective of whether a UK licence has been verified for exchange by the end of the year, you will be able to drive in Spain using your UK licence for six months from January, 1, 2021.

A RED CROSS mobile day cen­ tre (Cedimo) now visits Vega Baja towns bringing assis­ tance to the homeless.

Their ages vary from 18 to 70 and many are immigrants, agricultural day­labourers working without contracts, although there are also Spaniards whose circum­ stances have altered dramati­ cally during the health crisis.

As well as food, clothing and footwear, the converted campervan has a shower and first­aid facilities, explained Victor Blasco who is in charge of the Cedimo.

Most of the users will have their first hot shower in days, Blasco said, and they will also receive face masks and hand­ gel, which they would other­ wise not have access to.

New officers

MURCIA has got two new Police Inspectors and added 132 more officers after the Governing Board approved further appoint­ ments. The new Local Police Inspectors of Murcia have joined El Espinar (Segovia) City Council and the Fortuna City Council, respec­ tively, whilst the Local Police force has increased by a total of 132 officers.

In addition to the two new Police Inspectors, Murcia has also announced that 44 new officers have completed the training course, following five months of intensive training, and will now begin a practice period on the streets with veteran officers.

All of the 44 officers will be used to increase the troops in the nine barracks that are distributed by the districts of the municipali­ ty: La Alberca, Beniaján, Alquerías, El Palmar, La Raya, El Esparra­ gal, Puente Tocinos, Los Martínez del Puerto and Espinardo, which, together with the El Infante and La Flota barracks, consti­ tute the proximity division.

Yes, but no Party Busted by Police

A PARTY of over 200 people was broken up by Local Police in La Marina after seriously breaching Covid­19 rules on Fri­ day, November 13.

Officers broke up the party in La Marina, Elche, which was se­ riously violating coronavirus se­ curity and prevention mea­ sures, inside an establishment at around 10.40pm.

When officers inspected the establishment they found ‘basic security measures for pandemic prevention’ were not being re­ spected and following being evicted from the premises, 18 violation acts were issued for coronavirus violations and six for disobedience to attendees.

Councillor Aaron Cano, said “We will not allow this kind of action,” noting that “together we must be able to make this

small part of the population un­ derstand that these actions have repercussions against all of us, against our health, against our future and against our economy.

“Ultimately, we will not toler­

ate these attitudes that put the interest of a few above the gen­ eral interest. We have not al­ lowed it and we will not allow it.

And we will bring down the full force of the law on these atti­ tudes,” he insisted.

Cold comfort SPAIN will acquire 20 million doses of Pfizer’s Covid­19 vaccine, raising the problem of maintaining it at 80 degrees below freezing.

“No problem,” said Cristina Alenda, scientific director of the Biobanco at Alicante’s Institute of Health Investigation and Bio­ medicine (Isabial).

Spain’s hospitals, investigation centres and universities possess the necessary technology for storing more than 350,000 doses of the vaccine, enough for an initial anti­Covid campaign, she told the local Spanish media.

Isabial deep freezes are already stored in basements at Alicante General Hospital, Alenda added.

MORE than 3,500 Callosa resi­ dents signed a petition oppos­ ing the regional government’s decision to acquire 22 social housing apartments there.

These are all located in the same building and those who have signed the petition fear this could create co­existence problems.

The signatures will now be sent to the Generalitat, Callosa

mayor Manuel Martinez an­ nounced.

“The town hall is in favour of plans to buy social housing here, and we are grateful to the Generalitat,” he said.

“But we are asking for the apartments to be spread out through the town as this would benefit the users and the building’s existing resi­ dents.”

Don’t call the doctor

AUXILIARY health centres in Torre de la Horadada, Mil Palmeras and Pinar de Campoverde will have no doctor on November 20 or 25.

There was a similar situation on October 28 and on November 4, 9 and 16, residents told Pilar de la Horadada Town Hall, although the local government cannot intervene as the outsourced service is provided by Ribera Salud.

Meanwhile the Torre de la Horadada centre does not have an in­ ternet connection and doctors have not been able to access Ribera Salud’s Florence programme when carrying out the online consulta­ tions that are currently preferred on health and safety grounds.

AN Italian judge has sentenced the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pay bonuses pending since 1999 to an employee of the Spanish Embassy in Rome.

The extra payments, included in Italian legis­ lation, amount to around €30,000, plus legal costs of €4,000.

Union CSIF considers that the sentence sets a very important precedent in the defence of personnel working abroad.

It is the first conviction of a Social Court against the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy for failing to comply with local work legislation.

The ruling recognises the rights of an em­ ployee with more than 21 years service, who has had his case supported by the Spanish jus­ tice system on several occasions.

The Italian Justice system also recognises the employee’s right to receive the bonus in its entirety in subsequent years without having to go to court again to claim it.

CSIF has denounced the ‘disproportionate’ amount spent by the Ministry on legal advice which they claim far exceeds the amount owed to the employee.

P R I N C E C H A R L ES’ closest friends have launched a blis­ tering attack on The Crown this week, accusing produc­ ers of the hit Netflix drama of ‘trolling on a Hollywood budget.’ Some of the Prince’s closest confidantes have also accused the streaming giant of exploiting the Royal Fami­ ly’s pain for financial gain and raged that ‘fiction is pre­ sented as fact’ in its twisted version of events.

The Crown, a hit Netflix show, has over four seasons chronicled the life of The Queen starting shortly be­ fore her 1952 coronation.

The fourth series, which launched on Sunday Novem­ ber 15, covers Charles’s doomed marriage to Princess Diana, her eating disorders and his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

THE use of an anonymous or ‘blind’ CV campaign achieved a slight im­ provement in hiring women in Spain.

The Women’s Institute has published results from the largest Euro­ pean project using anonymous CVs, but it showed that although the number of women selected for interviews had risen by 3 per cent, the number of women hired only rose by 0.98 per cent.

The project was introduced in Spain between 2017 and 2019 and the report includes data from 240 hiring processes carried out in 46 compa­ nies in Spain.

The Women’s Institute has achieved the objective of proving there is prejudice and stereotypes which stop companies from hiring women.

Almost 100 companies were initially due to take part, although only 46 remained for the two years the project lasted. They include Repsol, Sodexo, Mutua Madrileña and Ilunion, which during selection process­ es prior to the final interview opted for not knowing the gender of the applicant and instead focusing on their skills. This meant that the CVs had no name, gender, age, photo or marital status.

Part lockdown removal THE Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid made the decision on Friday November 13 to lift the restrictions across 10 areas in which the epidemiological situation has improved considerably in recent weeks having reduced their Covid rates by more than 50 per cent.

The lifting of mobility and activity limitations will be effective from 00.00 Monday November 16. The areas where the restrictions are lifted are: Brújula and Las Fronteras in Torrejón de Ardoz; El Espinillo, San Andrés and San Cristóbal, in Villaverde; Guadarrama, in the town of Guadarrama; Rafael Alberti and Peña Pietra, in Puente de Vallecas; San Blas, in Parla; and Vinateros-Torito, in the district of Moratalaz.

The general director of Public Health, Elena Andradas, announced that no area in the Community of Madrid, of which there are almost 300, currently exceeds the accumulated incidence of 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days.

M OT H E R Buu, and father Echo, a pair of endangered species, Western lowland gorillas, welcomed the birth of their baby, at the Bioparc Zoo, in Fuengirola, Malaga, on Friday, November 13.

In a video posted online, which has already clocked up more than 32,000 views, the enormous mother Buu can be seen tenderly and so gently caring for her newborn baby, which as yet has not been named.

The Zoo runs a conservation programme to help endangered species,and the two gorillas, Echo and Buu are its biggest attractions by far, living in an open-plan, glass-fronted enclosure, where both of these huge creatures appear to really enjoy the attention from the thousands of visitors the Zoo attracts each year, as they prowl up and down the beautifully laid out grounds of their home, often seen to be actually making real poses for the cameras.

Thrown off cliff

GUARDIA CIVIL are questioning two men ac­ cused of throwing two hunting dogs off an 80­ metre cliff in San Sebastian de La Gomera (Ca­ nary Islands).

Officers from the Nature Protection Service, Seprona, with the support of the Mountain Res­ cue and Intervention Group are investigating charges of animal abuse.

The two dogs were thrown down a ravine in the area of the Puntallana road, where local resi­ dents saw two men in a van with the two point­ ers tied up inside. The crime reportedly took place at night, when residents heard the dogs’ cries and saw the van again, being driven by the men, but without the dogs inside.

The officers located the exact location, found tyre tracks, and, with the help of a drone, as the cliff was too steep to climb down, found the bodies of the dogs.

They were able to locate the vehicle which still had traces of mud and two collars in the back.

Fireball shoots Fines for holding phone over Andalucia A FIREBALL was detected flying over the centre and southwest of Spain at 227,000km/h in the early hours of Monday, Novem­ ber 16.

The fireball was an asteroid entering Earth’s atmosphere, it was very bright and could be seen with the naked eye.

Images were captured by detectors used in the SMART project, carried out by the Andalucia Institute of Astrophysics (IAA­CSIC), at the observatories of Calar Alto (Almeria), Sevilla and La Hita (Toledo). According to the main researcher on the project, Jose Maria Madiedo, it was recorded at 3.49am.

When the asteroid collided with the atmosphere it became in­ candescent, creating a fireball at an altitude of about 132 kilome­ tres. It travelled westward and died out at an altitude of 60 kilo­ metres above southern Portugal.

The detectors which caught the images are part of the South­ west Europe Fireball and Meteor Network which continuously monitors the sky to record and study different objects from the Solar System impacting with the Earth’s atmosphere.

THE Guardia Civil may be able to fine drivers for having a mobile phone in their hand even if they are not using it.

The General Traffic Department has re­ ported that the preliminary draft of a new traffic law contemplates that holding the phone while driving a vehicle could lead to a fine.

The new law, approved by the Council of Ministers, but still to go through parliament, is worrying Spanish drivers. Following the an­ nouncement that drivers will no longer be able to exceed the maximum limit on con­ ventional roads by 20km/h to overtake, it is now known that simply holding the phone, if seen on the numerous traffic cameras which are placed on roads throughout Spain, could lead to drivers to lose six points off their li­ cence, that’s double the current fine. It is hoped that the measures will lead to fewer

The new law is not likely to come into ef­ fect until the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

Two Injured in Sevilla Dog Attacks AN 81­year­old man has died and a six­year­old girl has been injured in two seperate dog at­ tacks in Sevilla on Monday.

At approximately 4.40pm the Guardia Civil responded to an emergency call about an injured elderly man in Villaverde del Rio, an urbanisation about 30km

north of the city in Sevilla Province. Emergency services dis­ patched a helicopter, and found the man in a plot of land in the La Doncella area. He was reported dead on the scene, having re­ ceived injuries to the head, face and arms from several dogs.

It is understood the dogs had

been kept in the plot, and the owner has been located.

On the same day, at 3.40pm, a six­year­old girl was reportedly attacked by a pitbull in Plaza Juan Duran Ferrete in the north of Sevilla. She was transferred to Virgen Macarena hospital with wounds to the face and neck.

Eamonn and Ruth, both 60, have been presenting the show for 14 years.

An insider said: “They have real warmth. It’s time for a change and they are perfect.”

They added: “Eamonn is pretty furious and every­ one feels for him and Ruth, they are well­liked on the team, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made.”

Furious This Morning viewers have vowed to boycott the show after it was revealed that favourites Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes would be replaced. Crypto Scammer Caught A CRYPTOCURRENCY scammer has been arrest­ ed in Tenerife following an investigation into a Ponzi­type scam that saw €378,750 stolen, af­ fecting at least 26 people.

National Police and Guardia Civil officers have arrested the chief executive of a company based in the Canary Islands that, allegedly, was defrauding people through investments in cryp­

Officers also raided four company offices, lo­ cated in the towns of Adeje, Arona and Cande­ laria, where they have seized three high­end ve­ hicles, abundant documentation and electronic devices, as well as, numerous bank accounts in the name of the investigated persons, which have now been blocked.

Graffiti artists under arrest POLICE arrested 99 graffiti artists over €22 million worth of damage caused to trains and stations.

The investigation was launched in September after 6,741 complaints were filed

by RENFE Operadora and Metro Barcelona between 2017 and 2019.

In a two­pronged sweep, National Police located the first 51 suspects who lived outside Catalonia, before joining forces with the Mossos d’Esquadra and ar­ resting the remaining 48 in the provinces of Barcelona.

THOUSANDS of flamingos have arrived at Doñana Na­ tional Park in Huelva to spend the winter.

They are amongst several species of aquatic birds, which travel to the Doñana Marshes, part of the Guadalquivir River, from all over Spain and northern Eu­ rope, when the colder weath­ er arrives.

Seeing their arrival and the sea of pink feathers is consid­ ered amongst birdwatchers to be one of the most beauti­ ful sights of the year.

The area is one of the largest bird reservations in Europe, and over the past few

days, some 70,000 flamingos have arrived and can now be seen there searching for food.

They will stay until the spring or even the summer, when they will then leave the space available to other species of birds.

WARNING: charity workers WARNING: Spanish police have issued a national warning over thieves posing as charity workers and drugging their victims The National Police has warned of scammers operating throughout Spain posing as NGO charity workers for a group called Clean Hands.

Officials report that the thieves put a little gel sanitiser on your hands and ask you to smell the product.

The hand sanitiser is actually a drug which renders people unconscious; once they regain consciousness, they find that they have been robbed. The National Police advises people not to engage with anyone offering products, surveys etc on the streets, regardless of any ID or proof they may be carrying. They also ask members of the public not to accept drinks in bars from anyone they do not know.

As these dangerous scammers are operating throughout Spain, police have asked members of the public to share the warning as much as possible.

Vaccine roll-out THE Pfizer vaccine could be rolled out in the UK next month claims co­founder of German firm BioNTech.

Professor Ugur Sahin told Sky News the first UK patients could re­ ceive the jab nation­ wide mid­December.

But the scientist be­ hind the vaccine said it will depend on whether it is licensed by the UK regulator in time.

Sahin said it will not be an immediate fix warning “it will be a difficult winter” and “it will become worse be­ fore it becomes bet­ ter.”

But he told the broadcaster life could return to normal in the UK, Europe and US by the “middle of next year.”

tries, such as those claiming state pensions, students and others who, under the Withdrawal Agreement (WA), will continue to be covered as they are now, including the receipt of a UK issued EHIC. LOCAL POLICE in Sevilla intended to fine a cake shop for delivering an order at 10 minutes past six.

The owner of the shop recorded a video of the moment when two Local Police officers fined him for having the premises open just 10 minutes after the mandatory closing for the catering sector in the Andalucian capital.

The owner argued that he

was simply clearing the tables and had just given an order to a delivery woman from home delivery service Glovo. There were no clients in the establishment.

The video has gone viral and many criticise the “‘lack of empathy’ shown by the officers while doing their job.

After the argument, the officers reportedly admitted their mistake and withdrew the fine, adding that they were unaware that restaurants were allowed to remain open for home delivery until 11.30pm.

However, as the owner called the officers “shameless” he was eventually fined for disrespecting and shouting at the authorities.

He complained that they should be more tactful, and “find better things to do with their time,” adding that he had not disrespected anyone.

Most beautiful coastal town CADAQUES, in Girona, has been elected the most beautiful coastal town in Spain by followers of the Lonely Planet Instagram profile.

This is the latest of several surveys, and after choosing Potes in Cantabria, as the most beautiful inland town, the attention moved to the coast.

Almost 60,000 of the 100,000 followers on Instagram have taken part in the survey, which has been carried out in eliminatory rounds. The final saw Cadaques up against Cudillero in Asturias, and the third and fourth positions went to Lastres (Asturias) and Calella Palafrugell (Girona).

Cadaques, on the Costa Brava, is located in the north of the area of Alt Emporda and was a source of inspiration for Salvador Dali. While it has become a popular destination, it is still quiet and not yet altered by mass tourism.

Founder of Hays Travel Dies A STATEMENT from the firm said: “It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we have to announce that John Hays, the founder and Managing Direc­ tor of Hays Travel died on Friday No­ vember 13 whilst doing the job he loved.”

John Hays, who was married to co­ owner Irene Hays, died aged 71 at the Sunderland head office, a statement from the Wearside­based firm said. Mr Hays, who founded the firm in 1980 with its first branch in Seaham, had be­ come a well­known personality in the region after expanding over the years.

Mr and Mrs Hays were last year praised after the firm purchased every Thomas Cook branch, retaining staff, following the travel operator’s collapse in September.

SPANISH mountaineer Carlos Soria, 81 years old, is currently in training to climb the Hi­ malayas, one of the world’s highest peaks, in remembrance of elderly victims of the coron­ avirus pandemic. The challenge would mark Soria as the oldest climber to summit the world’s 14 highest peaks.

“To all those who have disap­ peared because of this terrible pandemic, this terrible crisis, I want as an elderly person to

dedicate it to them,” Soria said outside his home in the Sierra Guadarrama mountains, north of Madrid.

Travel restrictions permit­ ting, Soria hopes to go to Nepal in the spring to take on the 8,167­metre Dhaulagiri climb.

“Now I’m a bit older I think it’s a beautiful idea to show people of a certain age that they shouldn’t abandon things just because of their age,” Soria said.

MADRID security guards who ‘humiliated’ a gay couple could face prison. Prosecutors asked the Provincial Court of Madrid on Friday, November 13 to hand down 18 month sentences to two security guards who harassed and humiliated a gay couple. Iván GA and Francisco MSM allegedly threw out a gay couple from a Fuenlabrada shopping centre in 2017 because they were being affectionate toward each other. Iván GA told the court that customers approached him to complain about two men who “were kissing and making out in an inappropriate attitude” and demanded he notify his superiors. Given the warning, the assistant has stated that he used the expression ‘pink code.’ This term, in the words of the accused, “is used to speak of two people of the same sex.”

The victims have alleged that they did nothing out of the ordinary. “We were holding hands, walking and looking at shop windows like any couple and, after kissing, he approached us saying that we were lacking respect to the families that were there,” they recalled.

If convicted of a hate crime, the accused face up to 18 months in prison as well as a €3,600 fine.

Baby Rescued TWO National Police officers rescued a 10­month­old baby from drowning in Valencia, on Saturday, November 14.

In an incident that took place at around 3.30pm, the offi­ cers were alerted by the baby’s aunt after the baby was hav­ ing difficulty breathing.

Within two minutes of the emergency call, the two heroic officers arrived, and suspecting that the infant could be hav­ ing a cardiac arrest, they took it immediately to La Fe Hospi­ tal, Valencia.

On the way to the hospital, the baby was pale, had purple lips and was unresponsive, while his aunt tried to resuscitate him.

With the quick actions of the police officers and the baby’s aunt, the young baby’s life was saved and left in a stable con­ dition at the hospital.

Emirates Losses EMIRATES posted massive first half-year losses after it announced that it lost €2.9 billion in the first six months of the year.

The Dubai state-owned airline’s holding company announced the losses on Thursday, November 12, after the carrier said global flight and travel restrictions meant revenue dropped 75 per cent to €2.7 billion as passenger traffic fell 95 per cent to 1.5 million.

Emirates Group, which includes the airline, said its workforce had shrunk by 24 per cent to 81,334 staff as of September 30 after temporarily suspending operations this year at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Married to Robyn Stewart, an Irish international track cyclist, Stewart is said to have had numerous relationship with riders, and ignored previous warnings over his conduct, reports Sky News.

Cost cut

THE Spanish government has capped the maxi­ mum price of surgical masks for sale to the public, meaning they will cost a maximum of 72 cents each.

The aim is to ensure everyone can afford the compulsory Covid protection.

The price, including IVA, will be reviewed as often as the market price surveillance requires.

In April, the Interministerial Commission for the Prices of Medicines (CIPM), a collegiate body of the Ministry of Health, agreed on a maximum price of 96 cents.

The commission has set this price after re­ viewing the current market prices of surgical masks in Spain, both in large stores, as well as in pharmacy offices and online sales in order to guarantee free competition below the maxi­ mum price set.

Jet2 flights to resume JET2 will resume flights to the Spanish islands on Thursday, December 3.

Some good news at last for holidaymakers after a turbulent summer, with airlines forced to ground a huge number of flights due to coronavirus restrictions.

Jet2 has announced on their official Facebook page, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, that they will resume flights to various airports in Spain from December 3 this year. Airports which Jet2 will be servicing from next month include Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. The airline has confirmed that flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma will resume on February 11 next year. In addition to the Spanish flights, Jet2 will also resume flights to Antalya, Turkey in December.

Jet2 has advised that any updates regarding other destinations will be announced on their page as soon as the information becomes available.

Finally Arrested A MAN with 10 outstanding arrest warrants for various crimes of fraud and forgery has finally been caught and arrested in Ali­ cante.

In an investigation that lasted six months, National Police officers were able to track down and arrest a 44­year­old man who was wanted on some serious charges, including causing harm to others.

Officers of the Provincial Police of Alicante became aware of a person who was wanted by the Spanish authorities and had been evading justice and avoiding arrest.

The man used false documentation and moved houses up to three times, using mirrors from the windows of the house to de­ tect any police presence, before officers were finally able to arrest him after requesting a court order because he had hidden inside the house without leaving.

Following the arrest of the man, who has been placed at the dis­ posal of the Court of Guard Instruction of the town of Alicante, oth­ ers have been charged with an alleged crime of forgery as he had used false documentation to acquire two high­end cars from a dealership.

After extended research, one of the dealerships was located in Germany.

Bank robber candidate

A MAN convicted of bank robbery is the candidate to represent political party Podemos in Madrid.

Jose Luis Nieto, who is also a former advisor to Manuela Carmena, who was mayor of Madrid until last year, was sentenced by the National High Court to five years and three months in prison for the violent robbery of a bank in Ourense in 1980, when he was 23 years old.

As El Mundo reports, he was a teacher in Vigo and a member of the violent sepa­ ratist group Loita Armada Revolucionaria.

Despite the sentence, de­ livered in 1982, he did not serve it in its entirety as he received a pardon from the socialist government of the time. He was an advisor in two districts of Madrid with the former mayor.

Nieto says that he wants to become their figurehead to bring the party leader, Pablo Iglesias, and the Madrid re­ gional coordinator, Jesus San­ tos, closer together.

Spain school dropouts SPAIN continues to be the EU country with the highest num­ ber of school dropouts, despite an improvement in the past decade.

The rate of abandonment of studies and professional train­ ing is 17.3 per cent, which is seven per cent higher than the European average of 10.2 per cent, according to the Euro­ pean Committee’s Education and Training Report.

The rate has gone down steadily over the past 10 years, but the study concludes that the national objective of get­ ting it down to 15 per cent, seems “unattainable”.

The report shows significant differences between regions.

Galicia, Madrid, La Rioja and Valencia have reduced the per­ centage of school abandon­ ment, while it has gone up in Cantabria, Cataluña and Navar­ ra. It also reveals that there are more boys dropping out of school prematurely (21.4 per cent) than girls (13 per cent).

The only country which comes close to Spain in the number of dropouts is Malta with 17.2 per cent, followed by Rumania (15.3 per cent). Those with the best rates are Lithua­ nia (4 per cent) and Greece (4.1 per cent).

Last chance pesetas

THE countdown is on to get rid of any old peseta notes and coins you may have lying around the house.

According to the Bank of Spain, at the end of September this year, almost €1.6 billion worth of pesetas were still unaccounted for and had not been handed in. If you were living in Spain before the euro came into circulation in 2002, it may be worth checking if you have any, as not only can you still return them to the Bank of Spain, some notes and coins are worth up to €20,000 to collectors. However, December 31 this year is the final deadline for returning them to the Bank of Spain.

This seems to have encouraged people to finally get the currency changed, as in the first week of November, €792,043 worth was exchanged, compared to the weekly average previously of just €170,000.

Update UK travel corridor Eight destinations have been added to the U K’s travel corridor list while Greece, apart from five islands, has been removed.

The eight additions are the United Arab Emirates (U A E), Iceland, Chile, Cambodia, Laos, Qatar, the Turks and Caicos islands and Bahrain, meaning arrivals from those countries no longer need to quarantine for 14 days.

The Greek islands remaining on the list are Corfu, Crete, Rhodes, Zakynthos and Kos. The travel ban on Denmark has been extended for a further 14 days.

C hanges to the restrictions came into force at 4am on Saturday, November 14, transport secretary Grant Shapps confirmed in his weekly update via Twitter.

an astonishing chain reaction of kindness.

Amy Durham, Blake’s mum, said: “Blake said he wanted to do something kind so we went and got a McDonald’s breakfast and we paid for the car be­ hind.”

Mum Amy added: “We had to wait in a bay for our food

and when we did the lady came out and told me everyone was now paying for the car behind and they were so happy and smiling. Just think that chain re­ action was caused by my little six­year­old’s gorgeous heart.

“It costs barely anything to be kind, we are so happy we have spread some positivity.”

Reptiles rescued

A TOTAL of 300 rare and pro­ tected reptiles worth around €800,000 on the black market have been rescued by the Guardia Civil in a pan­European and Europol operation with 21 people from two criminal groups arrested.

There continues to be a huge market for protected wildlife across the world even though the international CITES agree­ ment restricts the capture and transportation of many differ­ ent species.

The traffickers had a number

of different ways of bypassing the law, with ‘mules’ transport­ ing eggs across borders which were hatched and then used for breeding or use of fake doc­ umentation (supplied by ‘tame’ vets) which allowed the reptiles to be imported into Spain.

Incredibly, amongst the rep­ tiles found was a Giant Tortoise (an endangered species found only on the Galapagos and the Seychelles Islands of Aldabra and Fregate) which has a lifes­ pan of up to 200 years.

Drug pay back time AN Essex builder jailed for drug trafficking has been ordered to hand over £1.2 million of assets J Warner, 49, from Canvey Island, was given a confiscation order totalling £1,220,192 at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, November 9. Warner was warned he would serve up to a further seven years in prison if he failed to pay the full sum within three months, and would still be liable for the money.

Officers from the Organised Crime Partnership - a joint National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Service unit - arrested Warner in October 2018 for supplying multiple kilos of cocaine, cannabis and amphetamines across London and Essex.

He later pleaded guilty to four counts of conspiracy to supply controlled drugs and three counts of money laundering, and was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison in June 2019.

NO evidence of fraud THE US presidential poll was the most secure ever, says a statement released by cybersecurity experts, in the clearest repudiation yet of Donald Trump’s claims. A coalition of US federal and state officials have said they have found no evidence at all that votes were compromised or altered in last week’s presidential election, rejecting unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud cited by Donald Trump and many of his supporters.

The statement from cybersecurity experts, which ‘trumpeted’ the November 3 election as the most secure in American history, amounted to the most direct repudiation to date of the outgoing president’s efforts to undermine the integrity of the contest.

It echoed repeated assertions by election experts and state officials over the last week that the election unfolded smoothly and without irregularities.

Store Botched restoration Closures WH SMITH is set to close 25 high street stores which means the British retailer will have to start cutting nearly 200 jobs.

It was reported on Thursday, No­ vember 12, that the company has strug­ gled to survive the pandemic in the UK which has led to a pre­tax loss of £280 million (€313 mil­ lion).

Sadly, it now means a loss of jobs and the closure of UK high street stores, mainly small­ er outlets, after the chain saw business fall 19 per cent.

In contrast, sales through the retail­ er’s main website soared by more than 240 per cent.

THE botched restoration of a sculpture in Palencia, has once again put Spain in the press for its less than perfect art work, and ex­ perts don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

The 20th century sculpture, on one of the city’s most emblematic and visited buildings, which hous­ es the central office of Unicaja, has become the latest example of a questionable restoration job, and having gone unnoticed until now, has received many com­ plaints.

The building, in Calle Mayor, was opened in 1923 and has reli­ gious images on the outside.

The face of what was a smiling shepherdess has now become a

popular image to take a picture of, and it is the brunt of jokes both locally and across the web. Artist Antonio Guzman Capel shared images of the restoration, saying that it now looked like a cartoon character. He believes the head came off the sculpture and it was later ‘repaired.’ Professional artists and restoration workers are either up in arms or splitting their sides with laughter over the botched job. Locals are outraged.

This comes following a similarly poor restoration of a painting of the Virgin Mary in Valencia this year. Experts have called for stricter regulations regarding peo­ ple being allowed to restore art­ work.

UK’s travel corridor expands EIGHT destinations have been added to the UK’s travel corridor list while Greece, apart from five islands, has been removed. The eight additions are the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iceland, Chile, Cambodia, Laos, Qatar, the Turks and Caicos islands and Bahrain, meaning arrivals from those countries no longer need to quarantine for 14 days.

The Greek islands remaining on the ‘quarantine’ list are Corfu, Crete, Rhodes, Zakynthos and Kos, the travel ban on Denmark was extended for 14 days. Transport secretary Grant Shapps confirmed changes to the restrictions came into force on Saturday, November 14 via Twitter.

Shapps reiterated that travel, except for reasons including work and edu­ cation, is not permitted under current lockdown restrictions in England.

Rescue from Ravine THREE 12-year-old girls, and a father who tried to help them, have been rescued from a ravine in the Lleida municipality of Sort, Catalonia, on Saturday, November 14.

were called to the scene around 7pm after being alerted to their difficult situation in the hard to access area in Montardit del Baix.

Thankfully for the three 12-year-old girls, and the man himself, he was able to

notify the emergency services who sent two units of firefighters to the area, one of them from the GRAE special rescue group, who rescued the four.

They all escaped unharmed but were a little shaken up.

Landslide on Island VIDEOS shot by several witnesses show a land­ slide on La Gomera caused by a massive col­ lapse of part of a cliff on Saturday, November 14. The cliff face collapsed into the sea, burying the access road to Araga beach and the port of Valle Gran Rey, in the municipality of Velle­ hermoso.

The area, popular with tourists, is frequently used by caravans and other vehicles to park, and the shocking videos show many cars com­ pletely disappearing from view under the rain­ ing debris.

Two GES helicopters from the 112 Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES), Guardia Civil, Local Police, Civil Protection and volunteer firefighters were on the scene, search­ ing for any victims who may have been using the beach or become trapped in their cars.

The road between Vueltas and Argaga was closed as parts of it were left under a large amount of fallen rock and other debris.

Malaga’s antigen tests RESTAURANT customers or Malagueños hotel clients and other sectors within the hospitality service area will be able to take an antigen test to find out whether they have Covid-19 at a price of just €2. The typical cost in medical centres is between €50 and €60, however customers who make a reservation will be able to take a test for Covid-19 for this very low price.

The agreement was signed off on Friday November 13 by the Malaga City Council, the Mahos hotel management association, and the Association of private clinics of the province, who are all part of the pilot project launched by the city council so that Malaga City can be considered a safe destination against the coronavirus.

Crime Down

CRIME has reportedly been down in Spain since the start of the pandemic, according to the Interior Minister, Fernando Grande­Marlaska.

Marlaska reported on Mon­ day, November 16, that the crime rate in the country has dropped by 13.5 per cent be­ tween the months of March and November, and has attributed the decline to the restrictions in movement through lockdowns and royal decree.

Despite the positive news, the minister did admit that comput­ er crimes have increased, as more people have been forced to stay at home, and has said that the Ministry will be creating more concrete cybersecurity plans, especially in the area of child pornography.

Fare reduction ACCORDING to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), airlines operating out of Spain reduced their prices by 11.3 per cent in October (when compared to October 2019) in a bid to combat lack of travel due to Covid-19.

Burberry checks losses DESIGNER clothing brand Burberry, like most retailers had a poor first half of 2020 with sales down by 31 per cent to £878 million (€966 million) compared to the previous year. Despite this, they still managed a £51 million (€56 million) profit, although this was down by 75 per cent.

Things are beginning to recover as most of its stores in 59 countries, particularly in China, Korea and the USA have reopened and footfall has increased, meaning that they have almost returned to pre-pandemic turnover.

Spain optimistic for future A LENGTHY report issued on November 13 by the Interna­ tional Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded that Spain’s fi­ nancial problems because of the Covid­19 pandemic may not be as dire as originally forecast due to a strong third quarter.

Much depends on the re­ sults of the fourth quarter 2020 which will be nega­ tively influenced by the re­ turn to the State of Alarm and there could well be a further slowdown if work

restrictions continue for too long.

There are a number of external problems which impact on the Spanish economy, a high percent­ age of which depends on tourism and Spain has been hit harder than most Euro­ pean economies with GDP (Gross Domestic Product) still 8.7 per cent down on last year.

One area which could im­ pact hard and is difficult to forecast with any certainty

is that of bad debts rising ‘disproportionately’ hitting banks profitability as even­ tually government loan sup­ port will be withdrawn.

Effectively, the IMF rec­ ommends that the govern­ ment should concentrate on supporting viable busi­ nesses and accept that there will be a number of weaker companies that do not survive.

Initially the Spanish gov­ ernment forecast a 7.2 per cent growth in 2021 but in

the budget forecast, this has been upped to 9.8 per cent as the European Union recovery fund comes on­ line, but the IMF think that this is overoptimistic and that 7.2 per cent is more likely to be the final result.

Whilst not forecasting a dreadful year ahead, the IMF did warn “Policies need to continue to mitigate the risk of the recession morph­ ing into financial sector stress with even higher real and social costs.”

Originally, the ban was due to come into effect in 2040 and in February of this year was moved to 2035, but according to the Finan­ cial Times, (based on un­ named government sources) the Prime Minister wants to encourage the growth in the market for electric cars in the UK. This is part of a strategy to achieve climate change targets by 2050. as valued customers, but eventually his outrageous behaviour became too much as by the late 1980s, he was quietly en­ couraged to stay away.

Then in 1988 after his wife had left him, it is believed that he set fire to his home and died at the age of 47.

Now despite setting up franchises in different locations, it has become a vic­ tim of the Covid­19 pandemic and is clos­ ing for good with up to 100 job losses.

Avatel relocates to Madrid HQ

TELECOMMUNICATIONS: The new Madrid office.

SPAIN’S sixth largest fibre optic telecommunications company Avatel, has relocat­ ed its headquarters to Madrid in order to imple­ ment its growth strategy at a national level.

The operator has decided to move from Marbella (Malaga) to the Spanish cap­ ital for “operational and business strategy reasons,” focusing on bringing broad­ band connectivity to rural areas through fibre optics, explained its CEO, Ignacio Aguirre.

As a result of this geo­ graphical move, Avatel has reorganised and resized its different departments, so that it can execute its strate­ gic plan for the next two years to continue to add

business in rural areas where there is limited com­ petition.

With a staff of over 400 people, it says that pro­ motes local employment in rural areas, given that a large part of its workforce is distributed on the ground throughout the company’s commercial and technical network.

As a specialist in the so­ called Empty Spain, Avatel benefited from the lock­ down as there was an in­ crease in demand for con­ nectivity, generated both by the online work of regular residents and by the transfer of thousands of people from big cities to their second homes to minimise risks in the pandemic.

Economy needs stimulus THE Bank of Spain chief economist, Oscar Arce, believes that the European economy needs more stimulus in December or there could be serious financial consequences.

He argues that a continued softening of prices is not just bad for Spain but for all members of the European Union and said in a recent statement “we are seeing an increase in the portion of goods whose prices are increasing very little or falling, which is an indication of the risk.”

I await the slings and arrows LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT RACISM is a weapon, against which the only real defence is common sense.

Unfortunately, this precious commodity is being kept firmly under lock and key by UK politicians, who are petrified that using too much of it could send the whole racial issue spiralling completely out of their control.

In fact, their utterly biased ethnic appeasement attitude is merely creating a dangerous criterion that could ultimately bring the whole social order tumbling around their ears.

The beleaguered white majority of UK citizens are now not only riddled with guilt, but utterly petrified of saying or doing the wrong thing in case they find themselves at the receiving end of retributions which could ultimately prove fatal.

The recent resignation of football Association chairman Greg Clarke is a case in point. Now, I confess I have no idea of past indiscretions or opinions of

this man, but if he was pressured to resign in the light of the interview I witnessed, then his persecution was an absolute disgrace. During his address, he was actually acting in defence of black footballers, decrying the fact that they received a great deal of abuse on social media.

So why did he ultimately receive so much pressure and racist accusations that he considered the only recourse was for him to resign? Well as ludicrous as it may sound, it was because he referred to black footballers as ‘high profile coloured players.’ Whaaaa!?

Along with many others, I was truly under the impression that this was one of the preferred and polite ways of referring to the black community?

Wrong! Apparently, the expression was ‘outdated and old fashioned.’ Ah, now I get it, not in vogue any more eh?

Goalposts on the move again! Keep up everyone; yesterday’s acceptable terms are apparently today’s insults! Well I don’t buy it.

This is simply using the racist card to keep the white community confused and on the back foot. Even Meghan Markel on her trip to Africa referred to herself as a

‘woman of colour.’ Three days after Clarke’s resignation, I saw a highly placed police woman in the north of England discussing diversity in the police force.

During the TV interview she made a number of references to ‘coloured’ members and ‘people of colour’ on the force. So where were all the screams of indignation? Why wasn’t her letter of resignation on the desk of the commissioner the following morning?

Don’t be silly, she was of Asian descent herself. Racist accusations only apply if you’re a ‘privileged’ white. Well I personally have had all this brain washing and dangerous nonsense up to here. The whole exercise positively reeks of unfair bias and unacceptable reversed racism. And I abhor racism! I’m also interested to notice that UK companies are now targeting most of their Christmas wares at only 13 per cent of the population and that ITV’s much loved Good Morning programme is about to be recast! I await the slings and arrows.

It’s a pretty tough time here MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LIVE on the Costa del Sol and, all in all, we are having a pretty tough time here at the moment what with there not being any holidaymakers, curfews and not being able to have freedom of movement from one municipality to another, which, in principle, I guess seemed like a good idea, but in practice is ridiculous.

In some places here technically you can’t cross the road because one side of the street is in one town and the other side is somewhere else.

All shopkeepers are really struggling to exist right now and a few cafes and restau­ rants, that I’ve been going to for years, say they are getting zero help from their local councils and some are considering closing down for good. So I was pretty amazed to see that Fuengirola had decided to spend millions of euros on ripping up the square in Los Boliches and rebuild it. This was a perfectly good square. It had seating, a children’s playground, fountains and, at Christmas, always had a beautiful tree.

Where are their brains? How can you justify spending this amount of money on

a project like this? It’s like a complete kick in the nuts to all the locals who are being refused any help. Postpone it because it’s totally unnecessary. If you have some spare money, fix the potholes everywhere that kill your tyres and wheels.

Whilst I’m ranting at the local councils, what’s this new idea of allowing restau­ rants to stick astro turf and tubs of flowers in the few parking spaces that are available outside their premises?

It’s absolutely pointless because you are actually eating out in the road. There aren’t enough parking spaces around any­ way. I was sitting at one place the other day and watched a driver reversing into the space next to the ‘new extension’ and actually hit the tub of flowers and knocked it into the table nearest to it. It looks exact­ ly what it is ­ tables in the road. Maybe it’s just another money raising idea. All I know is that it looks stupid and could be pretty dangerous considering how folks drive out here.

Finally I’ve had a very sad reality check the last few weeks. Some of my heroes Sean Connery, Ray Clemence, Bobby Ball and Des O’Conner have passed. I guess what that tell me is how important it is to enjoy people whilst they are here.

Health authorities recall noodles THE Health authorities have issued a recall for a type of noodles which are reportedly dangerous for people who are gluten intolerant or aller­ gic.

The Buckwheat and Sweet Potato noodles from China, distributed by Terrasana, have been sold in Andalucia, Valen­ cia region, Catalonia, the Ca­ nary Islands and Aragon.

The Spanish Agency for Health Safety and Nutrition has advised anyone who is in­ tolerant or allergic to gluten not to consume this product.

There is no danger to people who do not have these aller­ gies or intolerance.

The warning was issued by the Dutch authorities regard­ ing the lack of warning of the gluten content on the packag­ ing.

The product has the expiry date 30/06/2022 and is sold in packets of 250g. It will be removed from sales channels.

Fire probe after death NATIONAL POLICE are investigat­ ing a fire in which an 87­year­old woman died and her carer suf­ fered smoke inhalation.

The fire on the fourth floor of a 16­storey block of flats in the cen­ tre of Madrid happened at around 10.15pm on Wednesday, Novem­ ber 12.

According to sources, firefight­ ers pulled the elderly woman's body from the burning flat, and SAMU medics confirmed her death at the scene. They then treated the victim’s 56­year­old carer for smoke inhalation.

The rest of the flats in the block were not affected.

DOG ATTACK Compelled to write this following the DOG ATTACK on THE NERJA - MARO popular campo walk down by the OLD BRIDGE / CAVE AREA. As I too was attacked by a dog off a lead there two years ago. Unfortunately this was a lot more severe to the guy I know, horrible attack by four dogs while the owner sat back and did nothing!! He reported it, incredibly, said it was hard work to get acknowledgement.

NO ACTION WAS TAKEN against the dog owner. NO WARNINGS EXIST IN THIS AREA TO TOURISTS ETC AND IT WOULD BE AWFUL TO SEE SOMEONE GET POSSIBLY KILLED, ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS A CHILD. Seems they are only interested in petty Covid matters now. SO THE POINT IS, IF YOU WALK IN THIS AREA OR ANY OTHER OF NERJA COUNTRYSIDE IT’S PROBABLY BEST TO WALK WITH A STICK ETC FOR PROTECTION. A lot of people in Nerja, let alone unsuspecting tourists who go on this lovely walk, will not be aware of this danger in what seems a nice, quiet area. It seems no one in Nerja Authority wants to take any responsibility to warn or stop these irresponsible dog owners, from risking the lives of innocent walkers.

I sincerely hope you publish this as it may well help even just one adult or child from serious injuries or even a fatality.

Something needs to be done by those who should be doing it!!

OUR VIEW Do curfews work?

EXPERTS say it depends on how the curfew is implemented. Colin Furness, an epidemiologist and associate professor with the University of Toronto, said curfews can be great tools to help contain outbreaks.

When done correctly, he said they have been proven to shorten lockdown periods and help flatten curves.

According to Furness, a curfew can be used to enforce (or reinforce) a certain way of living. By the time they’re announced, he said all options should be closed and there should be “nowhere to go” for people but home.

But if there is no clear policy on store and bar closures, Furness said things can start to appear “authoritarian,” “confusing” and lead to a lot of disobedient and disgruntled residents.

“If people just feel like they’re being pushed around, then you’re going to get civil disobedience and you’re going to get an erosion of trust - trust in government, trust in public health. That is a dreadful problem when you think about the long game.”

Timothy Sly, an epidemiologist and professor emeritus at Ryerson University, said curfews can be useful - under the right conditions.

Sly said countries where the virus has spread out of control or where mask culture has yet to be normalised, could benefit from curfews. In countries in southeast Asia such as Taiwan, Sly said mask mentality was in place long before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The curfew, although confusing and some what contradictory in ways can only be a good thing, it’s not about Covid-19 only spreading after 6pm, it’s about people’s behaviour changing after this time especially when alcohol is involved.

Tourism Dear Editor A Spanish friend of mine commented the other day that although the virus is a terrible occurrence, at long last Spain had their country back from the rampaging hoards of tourists who blocked the roads, car parks, beaches, bars, restaurants and shops.

I asked if any thought was given to the serious implications of what he was saying as those rampaging hoards, as he put it, helped to boost the local economy and pay for infrastructure quite apart from the tens of thousands either directly or indirectly employed in the tourist industry. Most families either have family members or know of friends or relations now unemployed or on short time and one only has to look around at numerous establishments which are now closed, many permanently.

Tourism is the life blood of the area. It’s not only what is seen but those who are employed in the services behind the scene. As an example Malaga Airport now employ only a fraction of those who would normally be there. Even at this time of the year the arrival and departure boards would normally be full of aircraft movement with planes full of passengers. Most aircraft, and there are very few now, are almost empty, something that cannot go on indefinitely.

A leading British airline recently said they would normally have already sold about 60 per cent of seats for the next summer period. At present it’s in single figures.

As far as the British are concerned, who numerically make up the highest proportion of visitors, there is the added problem of Brexit and the intransigent attitude by both sides which may make it difficult to come and go. Many pensioners spend the winter months and their money in Spain but if the authorities strictly implement the 90 days in 180 rule their time here will be greatly reduced. Taking residencia is a way around the problem in some ways, but has a number of disadvantages if the person’s main source of income and benefits are currently UK based.

We know of a number of people who intend to sell their property or will not renew their rental contract, something they would never have said previously.

In the last year there has been a huge surge in building but who will buy is another matter. Hopefully there will not be another 2008 situation of large numbers of unsold property.

Although I am a glass half full person rather than a glass half empty, I believe there is a bumpy and uncertain road ahead for a number of countries and it will be several years before there is full recovery.

So Spain may get their country back, but at what cost?

WHAT a welcome distraction the Biden vs Trumpty Dumpty show was ­ from the UK government’s ongo­ ing Covid chaos and staggering in­ competence.

With every toy that Trump ‘bigly’ threw out of his pram we moved fur­ ther away from the farce of all the UK’s U­turns ­ and evidence that its leaders couldn’t organise a bun fight in a bakery, or a press conference in a pandemic.

Boris Johnson is the court jester that the Conservatives foisted on a nation that found Jeremy Corbyn un­ appealing. Boris has been shown to lack discipline and attention to detail during the floods at the start of the year; the ongoing Covid problem; the school meals fiasco; and, above all, the Brexit negotiations which will deliver few promises made in 2016.

Apparently, he was bounced into the present lockdown by media leaks, possibly from Matt Hancock and/or Michael Gove because he couldn’t make a decision although scientists had advised him a lock­

School Covid Stats OVER 6,200 classrooms are in quarantine and 27 centres have been closed in Spain due to Covid, according to data published on Wednes­ day, November 11.

According to information from 18 autonomous com­ munities and cities shared by the Ministry of Education and Professional Training, these 27 centres account for 0.09 per cent of the total that teaches as part of the general regime; while the classrooms and groups af­ fected represent 1.5 per cent of the total, so it is estimat­

ed that 98.5 per cent of the groups are functioning nor­ mally.

The data presented during a meeting with educational organisations to present the amendments incorporated into the reform process, showed that positive Covid test results from students and teachers, with informa­ tion from 18 autonomous communities and cities, ac­ counted for 14,062 students who have tested positive, which equates to 0.27 per cent of the students in those territories.

Valencia region, run by a dedicated team of volunteers who feel strongly about animal welfare and work hard to rescue, care for and rehome animals.

The non-profit making organisation relies totally on public donations, fundraising and the income from its two charity shops in San Fulgencio.

It is a scam designed to save the Spanish govern­ ment money not an initia­ tive to save our lives! But do these new restrictions keep us safer? There is NO evidence that closing bor­ ders or locking down have any correlation to Covid deaths.

My friend and colleague Dr Sebastian Rushworh MD has a lot of data on this following an intensive study which can be found on line entitled ­ Does Lockdown prevent Covid Deaths? It’s an interesting study and worth reading whatever your opinion.

The best sourdough bread recipe ever! reason, we are locked down in our municipalities which is frustrating as many areas are without the lovely shops and larger better supermarkets. Coro­ navirus has a lot to answer for, but maybe cooking at home can take our minds off the ongoing problem for a while.

For thousands of years bread has been a staple food for many cultures prepared from a dough of flour and water. Through­ out recorded history it has been a prominent food in large parts of the world and is one of the oldest man­made foods, having been of significant impor­ tance since the dawn of agriculture.

Bread can be leavened by various processes such as natural occurring sour­

dough microbes, using the natural yeast from the air around us which is a tradi­ tional method like my grannie used, but industri­ ally produced yeast or high­pressure aeration is more common.

Commercial bread usual­ ly contains additives to help improve texture, colour, shelf life, nutrition, and ease of manufacturing quantity.

The best bread that I have ever eaten is the bread that my grandmoth­ er used to make! The recipe goes back hundreds of years and after all those years, when we seem to get bread so perfect, we stop making and baking it and start buying it!

Bought bread is general­ ly packed with additives, colourants and aeration

agents which makes it as light as a feather and often tasteless, we then ask our­ selves, whatever hap­ pened to home­made bread?

I love to re­create some of the lost recipes and tra­ ditions and one of our most lost skills is making bread. We know that bread is high in carbs, so I have been looking at how to make bread with fewer carbs.

I created a bread made from powdered nuts to create a nut flour instead of a wheat flour. Nuts I am and regulars have seen me buying tons of almonds and eggs to replace wheat flour and it works really well except that it tastes nothing like real bread and my grandmother’s bread still sticks in my head as

the best ever.

My grandmother used to make a sourdough and so I recently started recreating it for our restaurant. First you need to make a starter which is to get the natural yeast activated into the flour, by that I mean it finds the wild yeast from the air in our environment and although it’s just flour and water mixed together (nothing else at all) in eight/10 days it will be bubbling (fermenting) nat­ urally and smelling a little sour like vinegar.

Then you take a spoon full of it and add it to equal quantities of flour and water, prove it and then bake it. The result is amazing, the flavour is fan­ tastic and once you have made the starter (which takes patience) you never

have to make it again, as long as you always save some, it will go on forever and if you don’t want to make bread daily, simply put the starter in your fridge.

The fridge will slow down the bacteria and hold it until you need it again. Simply take it out of the fridge a couple of days before you need it to make sure that it’s active again.

You will need to feed your starter with equal quanti­ ties of flour and water every day for at least sev­ en days (like feeding a pet) but it’s worth it!

I made my first batch us­ ing this original recipe be­ low and it was perfect, so damn perfect and so deli­ cious that you will want to make it again and again. I remember that during lockdown I was doing videos on how to make bread. Check out the videos on YouTube.

But do spend a few hours putting this special sourdough bread recipe to­ gether, you will never re­ gret it, because it is the best bread ever!

Sourdough bread with fantastic flavour The starter 50g of rustic flour 50ml of water Mix together and leave in a bowl overnight for at least 12 hours to enable it to pick up the natural yeast from the air.

Feed it every day with equal amounts of water and flour, and stir well in. Feed it for about 10 days until you see the dough rising up the side of the glass jar and until it tastes sour. You cannot make this bread until the starter has had about 10 days.

Method Bring the ingredients together as a dough and stretch and work the dough well kneading for at least 15 minutes. Then roll it into a ball and prove for three hours.

Cut the dough in half and prove again for two hours.

After two hours turn the dough out and slash the top with a sharp knife and then bake at a high temperature of 250ºC at the top of the oven.

Tip: Put a tray of warm water in the bot­ tom of your oven to create some steam which will help the bread rise better. Bake the bread for 35 to 45 minutes.

Turn out and rest and then slice and serve. It’s the best bread you will ever eat by far!

Gutiérrez Cycling FAMOUS Spanish cyclist Sheyla Gutiérrez has given up a grant in order to help others that need it more with the global pandemic.

Gutiérrez is one of Spain’s best cyclists and has competed suc­ cessfully in many iconic races. She has been named Champion of Spain and taken a stage at the Giro d’Italia. Recent wins include helping her Movistar team to victory in the Spanish Time Trial Championship in 2019.

Gutiérrez currently has her sights set on Tokyo for next year and normally trains in Tenerife. This is costly and like last year she was awarded help to train. Although for 2020 she has turned the mon­ ey away saying, “With the health crisis, right now there are other priorities and people who need it more.”

Limo Riding Fines SEVEN limousine riding women, all from separate house­ holds, have been fined for breaching Covid restrictions af­ ter West Midlands Police caught them together.

The police stopped the fancy vehicle in Bilston, a mar­ ket town in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, on Saturday night, November 14 as it travelled to Sedgley.

The seven limousine riding women were each fined £200 for breaching the new regulations which state peo­ ple must not mix with those from other households in­ doors, as of November 5.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Police said: “The vehicle was initially stopped in Bilston, where all seven, aged in their 20s, 30s and 40s, alleged they lived in the same household.

“On alighting the vehicle in Sedgley, it became clear to officers this was not the case and the fines were issued.”

Isuzu D-Max XTR

by Mark Slack I ALWAYS think I am very lucky to be able to drive so many new cars; others obvi­ ously think so too if the num­ ber of compliments is any way to judge.

Recent admirers were for a truck, the Isuzu D­Max. The test D­Max was the XTR with navigation and priced at €47,302 (£42,720). It has proved hugely popular for its rugged good looks and multi people/load carrying capabil­ ity and off­road potential.

There are three ranges of the D­Max: Business, All pur­ pose and Adventure with prices starting from €23,068 (£20,832) up to the top­of­ the­range Arctic AT35 at €55,074 (£49,736).

Rugged coolness over­ flows, from a protective plastic body kit and big black alloys to bespoke trim inside and a thickly rimmed steer­ ing wheel that would serve a Ferrari well. Heated front seats, navigation and cruise

are included too. There are five graphics variations avail­ able and my white test mod­ el had the full package, it genuinely did make it look like an automotive extra from a safari park.

You can have the four­ door convenience of a D­ Max double cab for much less than the XTR, but the kids won’t reckon you very cool. The XTR, on the other hand, has school run appeal in spades and the ability to head to a remote work loca­ tion deeply off road.

Eyes closed, you’d never think you were in a modern hatchback, but after many days at the wheel the D­ Max had grown on me enough to downplay the sus­ pension bounce (and clunky gear change and insistent engine growl) and admire its down­to­earth approach.

There are more solid rea­ sons to like the D­Max if it’s your working vehicle, advan­ tageous tax rates if you’re VAT registered, meaning ben­ efit in kind doesn’t apply but a modest fixed tax rate does.

An economy read out of 31.3mpg after a week’s work was pretty practical too.

A True Crossover

FIAT has expanded its Tipo line­up with the intro­ duction of the new Cross variant, and has also an­ nounced that the remainder of the Tipo range is being refreshed.

Fiat has introduced a new Cross variant of its popular Tipo range which is structured more pow­ erfully, boldly, and broader with the new design of the grille that extends below the headlights, and is patently taller, meaning it’s a true crossover!

First released in 2016 as a saloon, five­door and estate, the Tipo has proved popular for Fiat with a total of 670,000 units sold.

The new Tipo Cross rides 7cm taller than the reg­ ular car, bringing a more noticeable stance out on the road. It benefits from a new grille design which goes below the headlights, while a skid plate, bull

bar, extended side skirts and roof bars give the car a more go­anywhere appearance. Larger tyres are fit­ ted as standard, too.

The rest of the Tipo range has been updated too.

All cars get updated full LED headlights, as well as refreshed bumpers and redesigned grille. The new Tipo also gets Fiat’s new wordmark logo which has recently been revealed on the new 500.

The interior has been updated as well, bringing a new configurable seven­inch TFT digital cluster be­ hind the steering wheel, while the air conditioning controls have been given chrome and black inserts for an updated look.

Fiat said that further information regarding prices and specs on both the Tipo Cross and updated Tipo range will be announced in November.

Awesome Recycled Car DUTCH students have built a ful­ ly functioning electric car made entirely from recycled material in an awesome feat of engineering.

The bright yellow, sporty two­ seater car, which the students named ‘Luca,’ is made entirely out of waste, including plastics fished from the sea, recycled PET bottles and household garbage.

The wonderful car, designed and built by a group of 22 stu­ dents in around 18 months, can

reach a top speed of 90 kilome­ tres (56 miles) per hour and has a reach of 220 kilometres when fully charged, the Technical Uni­ versity of Eindhoven said.

“This car is really special, be­ cause it’s made all out of waste,” project manager Lisa van Etten told Reuters.

“Our chassis is made out of flax and recycled PET bottles. For the interior we also used unsort­ ed household waste.”

The seat cushions consist of coconut and horse hairs whilst the car’s body was made out of hard plastics normally found in TVs, toys and kitchen appliances.

“We really hope that car com­ panies will start using waste ma­ terials,” production team mem­ ber Matthijs van Wijk said.

“More and more companies use waste or biobased materials in the interior, we want to show it’s possible to build a chassis too.”

ELCHE STADIUM: Works are ongoing to improve the quality of the pitch.

MAINTENANCE and improve­ ment works have been ap­ proved for Elche Football Club whilst there are no games be­ ing played in LaLiga Santander due to the international break.

The club has taken advan­ tage of the break to carry out maintenance and improvement works on the Martínez Valero stadium lawn, as they look to inject even more quality into

the franjiverde pitch as they continue to improve their ex­ cellent facilities now they are in the top flight.

The improvement works be­ gan immediately on the pitch after the match against RC Celta on Saturday, November 7, with the Servi­Cizarra company overseeding it with 400 kg of English ryegrass to give the grass greater density, before

sandblasting it with silica sand to cover the seed.

These works are part of the plan to improve the quality of the pitch that began with the end of the 2019­2020 season and that has a single objective, according to the club: “that the Martínez Valero presents an impeccable appearance in the home matches of our Elche CF in LaLiga Santander.”

LEWIS HAMILTON: The Briton started sixth on the grid.

LEWIS HAMILTON has triumphed at the Turk­ ish Grand Prix, sealing his fourth consecutive Formula One drivers’ championship and equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of sev­ en world titles.

The Briton started sixth on the grid after a challenging qualifying session, but gradually moved up the field in a rain­affected race, and took the lead on the 37th of 58 laps in Istanbul, racing to his 10th victory of this season and a total of 307 points.

Hamilton lapped his teammate Valtteri Bot­ tas, who finished 14th and out of the points, creating an unassailable 110­point lead in the drivers’ standings.

Talking on the team radio after taking the chequered flag, Hamilton said: “For all the kids out there who dream the impossible … you can do it too, man. I believe in you guys. Thank you so much, everyone, for your support.”

Sergio Pérez (Racing Point) was second and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) was third.
